- 0:04- This is the Pop Culture Junkie podcast.
- 0:06I'm Olivia here with Shauna.
- 0:10And as we record this episode,
- 0:13you are probably coming back from your Thanksgiving plans.
- 0:18I hope you aren't still bloated
- 0:20from all of the turkey and gravy and mashed potatoes
- 0:25that you've been shooting for days.
- 0:27(laughing)
- 0:30I mean, generally that's just you.
- 0:33- I'm saying that is nothing to do with Thanksgiving,
- 0:35though, that's just my pal.
- 0:37That's just you in general.
- 0:39That actually brings up a really good topic.
- 0:41What is your favorite Thanksgiving food?
- 0:44- Stuffing or dressing, I don't know.
- 0:46People call it different things
- 0:47based on where they're from, I think.
- 0:49- And I think it's stuffing.
- 0:50- And I think it's stuffing.
- 0:51- I mean, I like to be stuffed and undressed.
- 0:55- I think it's stuffing if you put it inside of the turkey.
- 0:59And I think it's dressing if you have it on the side.
- 1:02- So it's stuffing if it's out.
- 1:04So my mom just hung cultured.
- 1:06I can be un-cultured.
- 1:08- I mean, probably.
- 1:09- Mine's definitely mashed potatoes and the turkey gravy.
- 1:14But my mother is southern
- 1:16and makes the best gravy in the world.
- 1:18So I think it's probably real mashed potatoes.
- 1:21- Right, like that your mom mashes.
- 1:24- I make them. - I make them.
- 1:26- I make them because I want real mashed potatoes.
- 1:29My mom's like, I just made you a turkey and gravy
- 1:32and all this other stuff.
- 1:33- That's fair.
- 1:34- And also mashing you potatoes.
- 1:36So I'm a little elitist of it.
- 1:39But my brother and I have taken over
- 1:44the making of the turkey now.
- 1:47And so she can't really make that complaint anymore
- 1:52but we do keep her own gravy duty
- 1:53because she is the best.
- 1:56- She makes the gravy. - She makes the best
- 1:56more always be the best.
- 1:57Oh yeah.
- 1:59Any kind of gravy?
- 2:01- I love gravy, dude.
- 2:02It's just so commuting gravy.
- 2:04(laughing)
- 2:06My husband's none of that that make good food.
- 2:10- I like that part of Thanksgiving.
- 2:11I like their food.
- 2:13- I'll bring up the dish.
- 2:15- So I don't know.
- 2:17- So other than the stuffing and the gravy bath,
- 2:20what have you been obsessed with?
- 2:23- That's it.
- 2:24I've just been taking gravy baths.
- 2:25(laughing)
- 2:27- It's good for the skin, you know?
- 2:29- It's not a real bath.
- 2:31It's just soaking in gravy.
- 2:32It is thinking about my life choices.
- 2:35- What have I been obsessed with?
- 2:38Oh, we started the penguin on HBO Max.
- 2:41It's that Colin Farrell stars in it
- 2:44with Christina Miliotti.
- 2:46- Yeah. - And it's a spin off
- 2:48from the Batman with Batonsen.
- 2:51- It's really good.
- 2:53- Have you seen Batman?
- 2:54- I've been debating starting it.
- 2:56- I saw that one, yeah.
- 2:57- Yeah, and it's so good.
- 2:59And so I was a little unsure about it too.
- 3:02I wasn't sure if the penguin needed his own show.
- 3:05Three episodes in and it's really good.
- 3:07And Christina Miliotti is incredible in it.
- 3:09I just really like her as an actress.
- 3:11And it doesn't look like Colin Farrell at all.
- 3:13It still blows my mind that that's him
- 3:15under all that makeup.
- 3:16'Cause he's so hot and hot as well.
- 3:20- He's a not attractive.
- 3:22So yeah, I've been watching that some anime.
- 3:26We started the Dune prophecy show last night,
- 3:29but only got halfway through the episode before us.
- 3:31Like I gotta hit the hay.
- 3:33So it wasn't really like drawing me in yet,
- 3:36but I'll give it, you know, maybe the two episode rules
- 3:40and see how I feel about it.
- 3:42And...
- 3:44- Palipa was trying to get me to watch that with him.
- 3:46And I was like, I've never seen any of the Dune movies.
- 3:49- So you're not gonna know where that is.
- 3:51- You're not gonna know where that is.
- 3:52- Fuck is going on.
- 3:53- Yeah.
- 3:53- For these people, why do we care?
- 3:56Oh my God.
- 3:57I mean, I like the new ones with Timothy Shalame.
- 4:01And Andrew and I watched the 1980s Dune,
- 4:03which is so cheesy and over the top.
- 4:06And it just feels like an acid trip.
- 4:09And I think it's worth a view.
- 4:11But Timothy Shalame likes and Dio ones are pretty good.
- 4:14So if Andrew fucking loves Dune,
- 4:16so that's why he wanted to start it.
- 4:18- If I'm like finished the book or is he reading?
- 4:22- He reads it even slower than you.
- 4:24- Say he's a slower reader than me.
- 4:26Listen, and to be fair,
- 4:28my New Year's resolution last year was to read three books
- 4:31in one year, which is so easy.
- 4:33I sent them our very low for myself.
- 4:35- For what?
- 4:36- For what?
- 4:37- I read nine.
- 4:38Thank you very much.
- 4:39- Okay.
- 4:40- You probably read like 25.
- 4:41- I did, I read nine.
- 4:42- I do.
- 4:43- But I don't think I believe you there, but.
- 4:46- I did, okay.
- 4:48- I read all of the Avatar books.
- 4:49And what I mean is that five.
- 4:51- Yeah.
- 4:52- And then I read fourth wing.
- 4:54- Okay.
- 4:55- And then I'm almost done with Iron Flame.
- 4:57I'll finish that within the week.
- 4:59- Okay.
- 5:00- So that'll be 67.
- 5:01- 67.
- 5:02And then I read that sexy Persephone and Hades book
- 5:06that you, yes.
- 5:08- Yes.
- 5:08- Because of that.
- 5:09- Yes.
- 5:10- Sexy.
- 5:11- So what does that eight?
- 5:12- Eight.
- 5:13- And then I read, I finished the Elvira autobiography.
- 5:16Yours, Croulee.
- 5:17- And I finished what's in a generation,
- 5:20the Buffy behind the scenes book.
- 5:23- Oh my gosh, look at you.
- 5:24That's 10.
- 5:25That's 10.
- 5:26- Look at you.
- 5:26- She knows how to read.
- 5:27- I read baby.
- 5:28- I know.
- 5:29- For Spongebob.
- 5:30- She is literate.
- 5:31- She is literate.
- 5:32I'm so proud of you, Farah.
- 5:34- She can.
- 5:35- Thank you.
- 5:36I went from that knowing how to read
- 5:37to ruling a kingdom in one novel.
- 5:40- Yes.
- 5:41- So, yes.
- 5:41- I'm fine.
- 5:42(laughs)
- 5:43- Well, speaking of ruling a kingdom,
- 5:45I have been obsessed with the show.
- 5:47It's called Lady Jane.
- 5:50Have you heard of it?
- 5:51It's on Amazon Prime.
- 5:53- I just read Cheryl's comment.
- 5:56You should make that joke, 'cause it's funny.
- 5:57(laughs)
- 6:00- Wait, what is that segment?
- 6:01- It's in the chat.
- 6:02You should get a personal pan pizza coupon.
- 6:04Are you too young for that reference, Olivia?
- 6:07- Maybe.
- 6:08- Okay, I'll make the joke then.
- 6:10(laughs)
- 6:11- I should get a coupon for a personal pan pizza
- 6:14with all of those books that I read.
- 6:17- I'm going to.
- 6:19- Yeah, and go to the Scholastic Book Fair.
- 6:21- Oh, I love the Scholastic Book Fair.
- 6:24- I do too, I miss it.
- 6:26I miss it quite a bit.
- 6:27- Oh my God, quite a bit.
- 6:28- I got a great book about Hanson back in the day.
- 6:32- Okay, I still had it.
- 6:35- Yeah, there are so many things.
- 6:37I gifted you a Lady Gaga magazine.
- 6:41- You do?
- 6:42- Yeah.
- 6:43- If anybody is watching on video, they can see
- 6:47- Yeah, the sexy, sexy- - I found the exospect one.
- 6:50- They're both from the same year, I think it was 2012.
- 6:53- It's 2010. - 2010, even earlier.
- 6:57- There's so many things everywhere. - January 20th, I was single.
- 7:01- Oh, really? - Really a different era.
- 7:06And it's a bit squirrel.
- 7:08So, I've been watching Lady Jane, which is very fantasy book like,
- 7:15but it's basically if Lady Jane didn't get her head cut off.
- 7:20And so, it's an anachronistic history.
- 7:23It's so good.
- 7:25What's it on? I've never been heard of that.
- 7:27It's Amazon Prime.
- 7:28I think that they canceled the second season,
- 7:31which I'm really upset about.
- 7:32But it's right up the alley of sassy little history story
- 7:39told like a modern genre.
- 7:41It's got a little bit of enemies to lovers.
- 7:44- It's your sexiness? - Yes, very much so.
- 7:49And I've just been in a little bit of a funk.
- 7:53And I was like, I need this so to like rap me in a bit of a hug.
- 7:59And so, it's been great.
- 8:00I've been trying to catch up on my reading goals.
- 8:04So, to circle back on the reading, my reading goal was 36 books this year.
- 8:09And I was finished. - Yours was 36 and mine was three.
- 8:13- Yeah, right. We were really on opposite ends of the spectrum.
- 8:17But both on the spectrum for sure.
- 8:19- Yeah. - Sorry to be here.
- 8:21I was on like 16 books.
- 8:24And then I just totally dropped off.
- 8:26It's like by ADHD obsession.
- 8:28I've talked about it on here before.
- 8:29- Yeah. - Really into books.
- 8:31And then I'll get really into podcasts.
- 8:32Then I'll get really into watching shows.
- 8:35And so, I feel like this show is kind of the perfect in between
- 8:42wanting to read a fantasy book and then also watch a show.
- 8:46And so, it's just been a little warm hug, you know?
- 8:50- I'm not to get that world in.
- 8:52I liked Olive Bridgerton and I powered through that really quickly.
- 8:57Kind of talking about like the period piece with the romance and stuff.
- 9:00I didn't watch the one with the queen, which I heard was really good.
- 9:03The one that's just focused on her.
- 9:05- Oh, Queen Josephine. - Oh, my God.
- 9:08I know I should do that for my next girl in show.
- 9:10- Oh, God. - Yeah.
- 9:12That's a good one. - They don't get that world.
- 9:13- That's a good show when Andrew's gone.
- 9:15- Yeah. - God, I love that one so much.
- 9:17I watched it literally in like one day.
- 9:19- Oh my God.
- 9:20Okay, I'll have to start that too.
- 9:22- Yeah.
- 9:22- And you mentioned podcasts and I realized I started listening to a new podcast.
- 9:26- What podcast?
- 9:27- So, it is called The Dark Paranormal.
- 9:31And it is hosted by this British guy whose name I don't know.
- 9:36So there it is.
- 9:37Great.
- 9:39What a pop.
- 9:41What a pop.
- 9:42I don't know his name.
- 9:43He's a great podcast.
- 9:44- Don't need names.
- 9:46(laughs)
- 9:47- Kevin Eustis.
- 9:48Kevin Eustis.
- 9:49- That's great.
- 9:51- And he doesn't deserve his name yet.
- 9:54- He said they have to earn their names after a couple dates, okay?
- 9:58We give them the nicknames in Delvin.
- 10:00- Yes.
- 10:01- Yes.
- 10:02- And Olivia is finally like, by the way, his name's Bob.
- 10:05And I'm like, "Bob, here's this moment."
- 10:08- Yeah, it must stash guy for years.
- 10:10- My names are much better than their actual names.
- 10:14They're much more creative.
- 10:15- They're really creative.
- 10:16They're descriptive.
- 10:18The male names just aren't particularly inventive.
- 10:23Unless I was dating some young children.
- 10:27And then they're too inventive.
- 10:29- Oh God, what are their names are?
- 10:31- Braille and crystalline.
- 10:34- Ash Rider.
- 10:36- Rider literally.
- 10:38(laughs)
- 10:40- And then you're like, "Oh."
- 10:42- Yeah, you're like, "Let's dial it back."
- 10:44- He could be glasses guy.
- 10:46He could be glasses guy,
- 10:47so you guys get married, okay?
- 10:49- Yes, yeah.
- 10:50Once I have a ring on that finger,
- 10:52then we'll start calling you by your real name.
- 10:53- Olivia, what's his actual name?
- 10:55Actually, I don't know.
- 10:57- I don't know.
- 10:58Ringless.
- 10:59Ringless, that's his name.
- 11:01- I got, I, years ago this guy asked me on a date,
- 11:06and we were like friends through the bartending scene,
- 11:09and his name was Waffles.
- 11:12And I didn't know his name.
- 11:14And he had a tattoo of Waffles.
- 11:15- Like his bar name?
- 11:16- Yeah, he will use like a bouncer at the club next door,
- 11:19whatever, and he had a tattoo of Waffles in his ass shake.
- 11:22So everyone just called him Waffles,
- 11:23and he liked showing everyone his,
- 11:25and then he ended up asking me on a date.
- 11:27And I was like, "Okay, yeah."
- 11:29And then later that night, I was like,
- 11:31"I don't know this man's name.
- 11:34"He's going to date with a man named Waffles."
- 11:37- What was his real name?
- 11:38- I have no idea we never went on the date.
- 11:40- Oh, you didn't go.
- 11:42You didn't go.
- 11:42- No.
- 11:43- It didn't happen.
- 11:44- There's this guy at this coffee shop.
- 11:47I won't say the name in the coffee shop,
- 11:49but I was like, "Oh, he's really cute."
- 11:51And then they were like, "His name is Chewy."
- 11:54And I was like, "I can't be attracted to a man named Chewy."
- 11:58- Maybe that's his actual name, like Ceeche.
- 12:00- No, it's not.
- 12:01- It's not.
- 12:02But he only wants to be called Chewy.
- 12:05- It's like dubbing racist, Olivia, that could be his name.
- 12:07- No, he's white.
- 12:09He's white.
- 12:09- Oh, well, that case.
- 12:11- He's very white.
- 12:12- Does he chew like tobacco?
- 12:13'Cause that's disgusting too.
- 12:15- Sorry, I asked him.
- 12:16- I asked the owner of the establishment
- 12:19because we were friends, what his real name was.
- 12:22And I forgot it already, but he was like,
- 12:24"You need to text me all of this afterwards."
- 12:27- Yeah, well, it's hard to guess.
- 12:29- What coffee shop it is.
- 12:31And I think I know which guy you're talking about,
- 12:32'cause he is really cute, but that's his name.
- 12:34- Yes, yes.
- 12:35- Yeah, but yeah, it's hard.
- 12:37- If you have a dumb nickname,
- 12:40like immediate points deducted, I don't know.
- 12:43- I would have gotten, Waffles was very charming too.
- 12:46I just, the timing wasn't right, and I didn't know his name.
- 12:50(laughing)
- 12:51- Yeah.
- 12:52- Just to leave with the guy in the whole time.
- 12:55- You could have answered the answer.
- 12:56- Waffles, oh god.
- 12:58- Mrs. Waffles.
- 13:00- I missed this Waffles.
- 13:01He is no last name.
- 13:03(laughing)
- 13:04- Mrs. Waffles.
- 13:06- You should have taken Waffles
- 13:08to be your lovely buttered Waffle.
- 13:10(laughing)
- 13:13- I'm just saying,
- 13:14- So, you missed two.
- 13:15- Mrs. Waffle.
- 13:16- Waffle.
- 13:17We could have served Waffles at the wedding.
- 13:19I wonder what that guy's doing now.
- 13:20I'm gonna look him up on Facebook
- 13:22and see if he's taking his type of Waffles.
- 13:24- No.
- 13:24- Just type of Waffles.
- 13:25That was the same look Facebook too.
- 13:27(laughing)
- 13:30- Bro, you're listening.
- 13:32I hope you're doing great.
- 13:33- Waffles, you're a real one.
- 13:35You've been sticking around for all these years.
- 13:39We're sorry we're judging you.
- 13:40- So hard.
- 13:41(laughing)
- 13:42- Let's take a break and eat some Waffles.
- 13:44(dramatic music)
- 13:47- For a lot of us to holiday season means traveling
- 13:52to be with the family or traveling to get away
- 13:55from your family depending on your family dynamics.
- 13:58No judgments here, whether you go by plane,
- 14:01train or automobiles.
- 14:03Road trips can be a lot of fun
- 14:06or they can be a disaster, maybe a little bit of both.
- 14:10And that's why probably so many movies take place on the road.
- 14:14Really, I love a road trip movie.
- 14:17We've talked extensively about how we think
- 14:20that Crossroads is one of the best road trip movies
- 14:23in Waffles.
- 14:24- Thanks, thank you about it.
- 14:25And I think it's definitely my favorite one.
- 14:28- Yes, it's so good.
- 14:30It has so many different things that make it iconic.
- 14:33And I was trying to think of, you know,
- 14:35really what makes a great road trip movie
- 14:39and really breaking it down,
- 14:40I think it's like, you know, a strong journey framework.
- 14:44So they're going through some kind of purpose,
- 14:47clear destination, they're discovering themselves
- 14:50within it, they have memorable characters,
- 14:54they have conflict and growth throughout the road trip
- 14:57and a lot of beautiful scenery.
- 15:00I think road trip movies often have this theme of freedom,
- 15:04adventure, most of the time there's a really good soundtrack
- 15:08because whenever you're taking a road trip,
- 15:10you are at listening to music.
- 15:11- You gotta have a soundtrack.
- 15:12- Yeah.
- 15:13- I personally am like a book or a podcast girl,
- 15:16but whenever I'm going on a long car ride,
- 15:19but I'm just boring and obsessed with reading
- 15:21as you can't tell.
- 15:23- We need to find a good podcast thing
- 15:25because you and I are gonna be going on a road trip
- 15:27in a couple months.
- 15:27- We're gonna have to prep ourselves.
- 15:29- Yes, and so Ashana and I to prepare for the long journey
- 15:34that we're going to be taking together to San Francisco,
- 15:37we wanted to talk about what makes a good road trip movie
- 15:42and I think there's a lot of different types
- 15:45of road trip movies, right?
- 15:47And really there's some unpredictable ones,
- 15:50there's some great ones that we've seen throughout time.
- 15:54Like I think even the Odyssey we saw in Greek history
- 15:59is a road trip in a sense.
- 16:03And so it's been around for an-
- 16:04- I love the Odyssey in English class.
- 16:06That's one of my favorite.
- 16:07- Yeah, right.
- 16:08- And so there's so many different types
- 16:10of story tellings and hero changes,
- 16:13girls improvements over the course of the story.
- 16:16And of course, you know, in modern popular culture,
- 16:20there's some of these iconic road trip movies
- 16:23that are just traveling movies that really shows a growth
- 16:25of like an individual, whether it be into the wild.
- 16:29I think when I was growing up, a bunch of people
- 16:32who were graduating college said,
- 16:34I wanna go have, or graduating high school said,
- 16:37I wanna go have my into the wild moment
- 16:40where I run away for a year and I do this thing
- 16:44or whatever it is, but-
- 16:44- Find myself.
- 16:46- I find myself, yes.
- 16:48And you know, there's all these different examples,
- 16:52you know, I think of movies like Dumb and Dumber
- 16:55where they really are going on this long,
- 16:59arduous road trip together.
- 17:01- Oh God.
- 17:02- But it's just filled with silly giffy moods.
- 17:04- When I was first thinking about road trip movies,
- 17:06I was like, I really don't know if I like this genre.
- 17:08Like I think of some really cheesy ones that I've seen
- 17:12and it just kind of seems overdone.
- 17:14But then you start looking at lists of road trip movies
- 17:17and I was surprised at how many of these I really enjoyed.
- 17:21So we talk about crossroads, greatest road trip
- 17:23me of all time.
- 17:25Harold and Kumar go to White Castle,
- 17:27probably number two for me.
- 17:29- Oh my gosh, the road trip is literally just to White Castle
- 17:33and it is so good.
- 17:34(laughing)
- 17:36- I love White Castle.
- 17:37- It's so bad.
- 17:39Have you ever had White Castle?
- 17:42- So we used to get, you can buy like frozen White Castle
- 17:46and then make them in the microwave.
- 17:47But I, and those are delicious,
- 17:49but I've never actually been to a White Castle.
- 17:52We should go while you're still in Arizona
- 17:54because there's what in Scottsdale that I've never been to.
- 17:58- Babe, you really missed the opportunity
- 18:00for when I was still eating gluten
- 18:01and you know, smoking weed.
- 18:03Because I used to,
- 18:06- Oh man.
- 18:07- Okay, but I think you should do this with someone else.
- 18:09- Come.
- 18:10- Get really baked, get a crave case.
- 18:13So they give you 20 sliders,
- 18:17like 10 French fries.
- 18:20- Are the fries good?
- 18:21- I never had the fries.
- 18:23- It depends on the time of day.
- 18:25I would say get extra crispy if you go there.
- 18:28- But they're crinkle cut.
- 18:29- I don't know how I feel about the crinkle cut.
- 18:31- They're crinkle cut.
- 18:32But really, the sliders are so good,
- 18:36but get a crave case, get a smokyloon dube.
- 18:40It is so good.
- 18:41- You know me, smoke and dube is.
- 18:43- Yeah, you gotta do it for the experience
- 18:45of the white castle, everything.
- 18:48- I'll get high for you Olivia.
- 18:50- Yes, but if white castle is listening,
- 18:52they, if they ever make a gluten free one,
- 18:55I'm gonna gain a hundred pounds.
- 18:58- I got sponsored us.
- 18:59- I love white castle so much.
- 19:03So I've talked about this before,
- 19:05but I would go to Chicago every summer.
- 19:08And up until a couple of years ago,
- 19:10they only had white castles in the Midwest.
- 19:13- Yeah, they were the zone at one just open here,
- 19:16not too long ago.
- 19:17And one of the reasons I haven't been is because the lines
- 19:19always like around the building.
- 19:21And it's like, oh, fuck it.
- 19:22I'm just gonna go to In and Out,
- 19:23like at this point, not in time.
- 19:25- Yeah, In and Out is better quality,
- 19:28but white castle has a special place in my heart.
- 19:31And so my entire family,
- 19:33other than my dad hates white castle,
- 19:37my Chicago family.
- 19:39- He's maybe like God of Us.
- 19:41- Yeah, they're like, God are you really gonna make me take you
- 19:43here?
- 19:44And I was like, yes, I need you to sign that.
- 19:46- I'm so high and hungry, God damn.
- 19:48- So as a stoner and or a former stoner now,
- 19:53and someone who absolutely loves white castle,
- 19:56I think that is one of the greatest movies.
- 19:58I also think that Neopatra Care is a straight man.
- 20:01So good.
- 20:01- Yeah, it's playing himself as just this overtly sexual
- 20:05over the top version of Neopatra Care is.
- 20:08- But you watched?
- 20:10- Yeah, we watched Harold and Kumar go to Guantanamo Bay
- 20:14with my dad.
- 20:16He thought that was the funniest.
- 20:18This was years ago, obviously.
- 20:19- Okay.
- 20:20- My lord, my father.
- 20:21You were like, he liked that.
- 20:23Yeah, he thought it was fucking hilarious
- 20:27because it is fucking hilarious.
- 20:29- So it's quite funny.
- 20:31- A great road trip movie.
- 20:32So yeah, there's a good number of them.
- 20:36Zombie land is a road trip movie.
- 20:38That's incredible.
- 20:40That is a great movie.
- 20:42- I've realized, so I'm quite odd
- 20:45when it comes to me going on a vacation
- 20:48or just traveling in general,
- 20:50I almost always want to watch final destination.
- 20:53Before I take that type of road trip.
- 20:56- You're insane.
- 20:57Why would you want to?
- 20:59- I don't know, I'm a glutton for punishment.
- 21:01Like I was gonna go on a road trip
- 21:04and I watched final destination too.
- 21:06Stupid, I was about to get on a plane,
- 21:10watch final destination one.
- 21:12- Is that my two?
- 21:13- You know where the logs come through the cars.
- 21:15- Yes, and cars.
- 21:17- And so I actually really do love a horror movie road trip.
- 21:22I think one of a very underrated one
- 21:26that I would say is a death proof by 202 now.
- 21:30I recently watched that for the first time.
- 21:33I know, isn't that?
- 21:35- It just escaped my radar.
- 21:38- It's filmed in Austin.
- 21:40It's filmed in Austin.
- 21:42And I watched it when I lived in Austin
- 21:44and I watched it with my brother
- 21:45and we got in his niece on the ultimate.
- 21:47After we watched it, he was driving me around.
- 21:50We're like, we're so cool.
- 21:52We were driving in the same places.
- 21:54But if you've never heard of death proof,
- 21:56it is Quinterantino Classic
- 21:59and it's a Drainstunt man.
- 22:01His name's Mike.
- 22:02He uses his death proof stunt car
- 22:04to murder unsuspecting women
- 22:06and a fearless group of women
- 22:08and counter Mike on the road.
- 22:10And they are kind of like a adrenaline junkies.
- 22:13I think of the dissent ladies.
- 22:16And they go after him.
- 22:17It's amazing.
- 22:19It's such a good Tarantino movie.
- 22:21- Yeah, and one of the ladies is a stunt performer
- 22:24in real life.
- 22:25So she's doing her own stunts in the movie, right?
- 22:27Where she's like hanging off the hood of the car.
- 22:30- Yes, yes.
- 22:32It is, it is just so good.
- 22:34It's such a good Tarantino movie.
- 22:36- So we bell.
- 22:37- That's there.
- 22:38- Yeah.
- 22:38And I think, you know, it's not,
- 22:40I don't think there's any feet in that one for Tarantino.
- 22:44Maybe there.
- 22:45- Oh, okay.
- 22:46And see you know, wow.
- 22:47- So when her feet are up on the gas.
- 22:49- Yeah, so, okay.
- 22:51Rosario Dawson at one point is,
- 22:54they're at a truck stopper,
- 22:55a gas station to get snacks and stuff.
- 22:58And she's sleeping and her feet are out the window.
- 23:01And the main bag guy comes up
- 23:03and like tickles her feet or like touches her feet.
- 23:05And she like wakes up.
- 23:07And I only know this because I watched it like two months ago.
- 23:10- Okay, if you don't know why we're referencing
- 23:12"Feedin'" Quentin Tarantino,
- 23:14he has a foot fetish and he puts all these things.
- 23:16- Yes he does.
- 23:17He always puts feet into his movie.
- 23:20- Yeah.
- 23:21- I also think another really, really good kind of niche
- 23:26road trip movie is natural born killers, which I absolutely
- 23:31love that movie.
- 23:32- Yeah.
- 23:32- What?
- 23:34- Oh my god.
- 23:37It has "Woody Hero's Sillant" in it.
- 23:39The couple Mikey and Mallory Knox.
- 23:42And they go on a killing spree across the American Southwest.
- 23:46- And it is.
- 23:48- One of the most iconic movies.
- 23:50It's got a really cool style similar like Tarantino,
- 23:55but it's not done by Tarantino.
- 23:57But it is like one of those,
- 24:00just like really, really great cinematography.
- 24:04- I'm gonna choose that from our movie night next time
- 24:07that I need to choose a movie.
- 24:08- It's just good.
- 24:10- Yes, it's amazing.
- 24:11It's so good.
- 24:12It came out in 1994, but I absolutely love it.
- 24:16- I have a funny one.
- 24:17Be this and butt head do America.
- 24:20- I feel like I have seen it when I was younger,
- 24:22but like I can't, I could tell you a single thing about it.
- 24:25- See this is when our age difference just comes
- 24:28a little bit there.
- 24:29- So in 1996, Beethas and Butthead do America.
- 24:34It stars.
- 24:36It's meh.
- 24:37It stars Demy Moore.
- 24:39Oh, I know, it doesn't star them.
- 24:41They are in it.
- 24:43Demy Moore briefs Willis,
- 24:44Robert Stack,
- 24:45Chloris Alliechman,
- 24:47Star and Supporting Rolls.
- 24:48The two teen slackers travel the US
- 24:51and unknowingly become a fugitive.
- 24:54So it's,
- 24:56they travel with Motley crew roadies.
- 25:00They camp out.
- 25:02They try to lose their virginity at some point, I think.
- 25:05They try to seduce Chelsea Clinton.
- 25:07It's great stuff.
- 25:10- Who could blame them, you know?
- 25:12- It's a bit of a very 90s.
- 25:14So I absolutely worth a rewatch.
- 25:19Did you ever watch Beethas and Butthead
- 25:23or was it like before your time?
- 25:25- I watched it with my brother.
- 25:27- Okay.
- 25:28- Quite a bit,
- 25:29'cause he's born in the 90s.
- 25:31I was born in 1993.
- 25:32So I know the culture seemed like older ones,
- 25:37but if you tried to get me to recap that plot,
- 25:40I would, like, gun to my head, I would die.
- 25:43- Yeah, you should absolutely give it a watch.
- 25:46And the soundtrack is great as well.
- 25:49There's this Red Hot Chili Peppers song
- 25:51that every time I hear that,
- 25:52I think of Beethas and Butthead.
- 25:54So,
- 25:54- I have that in a world.
- 25:56- 1996.
- 25:57What year were you born?
- 25:59- 1993.
- 26:00- Oh, thank God.
- 26:02Okay, you were alive.
- 26:03- You were a baby.
- 26:05- I was a little bit.
- 26:07- She's a little bit,
- 26:08but not watching Beethas and Butthead as a little bit.
- 26:11But yeah, a great road trip movie there.
- 26:15- Yeah, a more modern one.
- 26:17We're the Millers, I think, is one of the funniest.
- 26:20I love We're the Millers.
- 26:22I think it's very much.
- 26:24- There is funny parts.
- 26:25Yeah, I do remember thinking a lot of it was funny.
- 26:28- Boner garage, no regards.
- 26:31So many things.
- 26:32- Oh, I was like, there's a movie called Boner garage.
- 26:35- No, I've been like, there's so many iconic lines
- 26:39from it.
- 26:40I mean, Jennifer Aniston is playing a really sassy stripper.
- 26:44- That's true.
- 26:45- We have Emma Roberts as like a Radoway sassy.
- 26:50Emma Roberts is playing herself if she were poor.
- 26:53- I always play herself.
- 26:55- Yeah, but not a nebo baby.
- 26:58And then we have the iconic, wait, you guys are getting paid?
- 27:03- I do.
- 27:04- So many just like, you guys are getting paid for this?
- 27:06- You guys are getting paid for this?
- 27:08I think it's such a funny one.
- 27:10Jason Tadekis obviously is in it, you know,
- 27:14a little bit wild ex-hunt spend.
- 27:17That's the only thing he's known for.
- 27:20- Yeah, that's it.
- 27:20He hasn't done anything since.
- 27:22- Not that.
- 27:23- Oh my God, that fucking soccer show
- 27:25that everyone was obsessed with.
- 27:26- Ted Lasco.
- 27:28- There it is. - I know.
- 27:29- I know.
- 27:30- I mean, I'm just--
- 27:31- I mean, I'm just--
- 27:32- I think I just subject him to that
- 27:34because I want to be the one that sleeps with Olivia Wilde
- 27:37and not him or slept with Olivia Wilde, you know,
- 27:40him and Harry Styles too.
- 27:42- We did talk about you being in a lesbian relationship
- 27:46with another woman named Olivia in the last episode.
- 27:48So it's perfect.
- 27:49- Yeah, yeah, perfect.
- 27:51- I think it's been a mental service.
- 27:53- I have been manifesting that since the OC
- 27:56and, you know, really, I think it just needs to happen.
- 28:01- Oh, she was great in the OC and a lesbian icon.
- 28:05- Yes, yeah.
- 28:07We love, oh, I would say more by.
- 28:10Oh, she was a good guy by icon.
- 28:12- Yeah, they don't want to admit it too, right?
- 28:14- Yeah, they didn't want to go full lesbian
- 28:19because it was Fox, you know,
- 28:22and they ultimately just wanted to, you know, keep it going.
- 28:27- Buffy went full lesbian,
- 28:28but that's a little lesbian or bisexuality, a racer there.
- 28:33- Yes, that's true.
- 28:34- That's true. - That's true.
- 28:35- And then one of my favorite episodes
- 28:37of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is when they go on a road trip.
- 28:40Very short, you know, episode.
- 28:42They are trying to flee from glory
- 28:44in the third to last episode of season five
- 28:49and Buffy rents a Winnebago.
- 28:52- Okay. - High jinks and soo.
- 28:55- Yeah, and they thought it was a good episode.
- 28:57- Yeah, that is a really good episode.
- 28:59- I didn't think of this movie as a road trip movie,
- 29:03but it ultimately is.
- 29:04And I am going to end this recording and go watch it
- 29:08because I heard a TikTok sound of this audio.
- 29:12And I was like, I need Kate Hudson to wrap me in a warm hug
- 29:17and the movie almost famous is one of the most iconic movies ever.
- 29:22It is technically a road trip
- 29:25because they're trying with a band.
- 29:28So if you've never heard of it,
- 29:29it comes out in the 2000s,
- 29:31but it's a coming of age film that set in the early 1970s
- 29:36and it follows a teenage journalist, William Miller.
- 29:40He's reporting for "Rillowing Stones"
- 29:42and he meets these, the set of groupies,
- 29:45which is with Kate Hudson.
- 29:47And she is based on really one of the most iconic
- 29:51groupies of all time who had really kind of toured around
- 29:57with all of these different bands.
- 29:59It's a made up band for this called Stillwater,
- 30:02but it is just one of my gosh,
- 30:05I love that movie so much.
- 30:07The styling in it is still so iconic.
- 30:10The quotes and I've seen the whole thing from beginning to end.
- 30:13I've just seen like clips of it.
- 30:16If you guys could see the look of the horse in my face,
- 30:21what do you mean?
- 30:22What do you mean?
- 30:24What do you mean?
- 30:26I will watch almost famous.
- 30:28What do you mean?
- 30:29I will watch almost famous from beginning to end
- 30:32if you watch Beavis and Butthead do America from beginning to end.
- 30:35And I think that's a fair trade.
- 30:36'Cause they're both adorable and delightful.
- 30:38Once you see almost famous,
- 30:39you will not agree that it's a fair trade,
- 30:42but I will make that trade.
- 30:44Because almost famous is such an amazing movie.
- 30:47I can't believe it.
- 30:48You saying Beavis and Butthead do America is the no one?
- 30:51Yeah, no, but almost famous is like one of the most classic,
- 30:56amazing movies ever.
- 30:58And it made me fall in love with Kate Hudson.
- 31:00And it's been on the radar.
- 31:02It's been on the list.
- 31:03And for a really long time,
- 31:05I was a part of the Itty-Bitty Titty Committee.
- 31:09And you know, Kate Hudson is our icon
- 31:13and representative of that.
- 31:14And she just looks so good.
- 31:16You're not anymore now.
- 31:17You're like, you're like, you're like, I'm just fat.
- 31:19No, I'm just fat.
- 31:20No, you just, hefty tits.
- 31:23I mean, these came out of nowhere.
- 31:25I have to do everything, but tits too.
- 31:27Yeah, yeah, I will take it.
- 31:29Another movie that I didn't think of as a road trip movie,
- 31:33but in hindsight, it is, is Logan.
- 31:37So this is a superhero movie from 2017,
- 31:41starring Hugh Jackman as kind of based on like the old man,
- 31:45Logan comic books.
- 31:47So he goes on a road trip with Laura, who is X 23.
- 31:52And spoiler alert dies in the end.
- 31:55But that's okay, because in Wolverine and Deadpool,
- 31:57we see another Wolverine.
- 31:59He resurrects.
- 32:00Yeah, true.
- 32:01Well, his grave is desecrated by Deadpool.
- 32:04And that movie horrifically, the first 10 minutes.
- 32:09It's so offensive, incredible and wonderful.
- 32:14But yes, we do get a different variant of Wolverine.
- 32:16But yes, Logan is a good road trip movie
- 32:19that I would highly suggest.
- 32:21I mean, anybody who likes X-Men and Wolverine
- 32:23and Marvel and comic books in general,
- 32:26but really if you don't, I still think that they're incredible.
- 32:29Yeah, I liked that one.
- 32:31And I am the person who would fit into that category.
- 32:35I spend a lot of time talking about this already
- 32:38on the podcast, so I won't spend too much time on it.
- 32:41But road trip and Euro trip have to be made
- 32:44into iconic mentions on their percent.
- 32:48100%.
- 32:49Is Euro trip a road trip movie?
- 32:51Do they spend a lot of time in a car?
- 32:54Road trip, they spend a road trip.
- 32:57Oh, Euro trip, they're flying.
- 32:59But yeah, so--
- 33:01I think that counts.
- 33:02Yeah, that counts.
- 33:04Yeah, yeah.
- 33:05But Euro trip is based on road trip.
- 33:07And I always still say it like Boston, Boston, Texas.
- 33:13Like they're just some of those iconic little lions
- 33:16that you always have from--
- 33:17It's not a dozen known from your road trip, right?
- 33:19Yeah.
- 33:20Got to do this.
- 33:21Yes.
- 33:22No, that'd be on M-mead.
- 33:23Yeah.
- 33:24We cannot mention road trip movies without--
- 33:27we'll give them just a little mention.
- 33:29National Ampune's vacation, European vacation, Christmas--
- 33:33I guess Christmas vacation, they don't really
- 33:35go on a road trip, do they?
- 33:37No.
- 33:38Their family goes to Van.
- 33:42Exactly.
- 33:43Uncle Eddie goes on a RV trip.
- 33:45He goes on his road trip.
- 33:47Which last year for Christmas, we did for White Elephant.
- 33:51We did dress like your favorite Christmas character.
- 33:54And I dressed as Uncle Eddie.
- 33:57And all of my friends were dressed up super cute.
- 34:00The who or Camarindia is from the holiday.
- 34:04And I'm over here just like Uncle Eddie.
- 34:07Just ooh, yeah.
- 34:08So that's who I am.
- 34:10All I want to be is Uncle Eddie.
- 34:12For the rest of the year, I don't want to be perceived.
- 34:16I haven't washed this in a couple days.
- 34:19It's just--
- 34:20She's talking about her hair if you're not watching every two.
- 34:23My hair-- anybody listen, he says I'm washed
- 34:24what?
- 34:25I'm a couple learning.
- 34:26Oh, God.
- 34:27I washed that.
- 34:28I washed that every day.
- 34:29Yeah.
- 34:35But there are just so many different ways to do it.
- 34:37Now there are-- I also think of like--
- 34:40I obviously mentioned final destination for horror movies
- 34:45that take place on the road.
- 34:46I also think another iconic road trip horror movie,
- 34:50if you are crazy like me and want to watch one of those,
- 34:54is Vacancy, which they--
- 34:57Oh, God, what's this name?
- 34:58It sounds familiar.
- 34:59I'm sure I saw it at some point.
- 35:01So it is Luke Wilson, Kate Beckinsale,
- 35:05and they stop at like a little motel
- 35:08because they have their car breaks down,
- 35:11and they have to stay.
- 35:15And it's like the boy are watching them in the hotel.
- 35:20OK.
- 35:21I think you've seen it.
- 35:21I think you've seen it.
- 35:23Yeah.
- 35:23I think you've seen it.
- 35:24I think you've seen it.
- 35:26There might be the hitcher, too, which I guess we could throw
- 35:29in there as a retro horror movie.
- 35:31They pick up that hitchhike ruin.
- 35:32Is it murdering the boyfriend?
- 35:34Oh my God, that movie still gives me the creeps.
- 35:37He like strengthens him up between the two trucks
- 35:39and then like rips him in half.
- 35:42Yep.
- 35:43We will not be picking up any hitchhikers on our way.
- 35:46Absolutely not.
- 35:47Just go.
- 35:49Oh my God.
- 35:50So no, it's the boyfriend that he kills
- 35:52because I remember watching it with my boyfriend
- 35:54and being very sad.
- 35:56And I was like, no one better kill you.
- 36:00In hindsight.
- 36:01[MUSIC PLAYING]
- 36:04I little off topic from Road Trip movies,
- 36:08but we are going on a road trip soon.
- 36:10I need to know what is your favorite road trip snack?
- 36:15Huh.
- 36:16Are you like one of these people who's
- 36:18going to be like, here's some apple slices
- 36:20in baby carrots, Shawna.
- 36:21And I'm going to be like, oh.
- 36:23No, I am a trash panda all the way to real.
- 36:26Yeah.
- 36:27I must say.
- 36:29I must say, I love a slim gym.
- 36:32Ooh, snap into a slim gym.
- 36:34Slim gym, a porcrine, which is--
- 36:38we're going to have some beautiful breath in this car.
- 36:41Oh, yeah.
- 36:42Also need--
- 36:42Oh, yeah.
- 36:43I also need--
- 36:44I was thinking--
- 36:46Oh, I was thinking--
- 36:47I was thinking burps and breaths, but I am riding in a car
- 36:52with you for 13 hours.
- 36:54Yeah, we'll be two.
- 36:56So gassy.
- 36:56Yeah, I will be two.
- 36:57I'm not sure.
- 37:00And then I also need some sort of sour snack.
- 37:04So most of the time I go to is the sour patch watermelons.
- 37:10But I also like a good cheese stick.
- 37:15And then to balance it out of all of that processed food,
- 37:19I do like those little carrot and ranch packs.
- 37:23Just so I feel like, OK, I have contributed to my body
- 37:28in some sense.
- 37:29Because I got you--
- 37:30And mostly the carrots serve as a vehicle
- 37:32to get the ranch into your mouth.
- 37:34Exactly.
- 37:35Yeah, exactly.
- 37:36And I would say a flaming hot chino lemon.
- 37:42Oh, fuck yeah.
- 37:43Oh, we're going to have so many flaming hot chitos.
- 37:45Lemon.
- 37:46Our beagles--
- 37:47Lemon.
- 37:47Muffery.
- 37:48Lemon.
- 37:50Our beagles.
- 37:50They're all gluten free.
- 37:51Beagles.
- 37:52Yeah, baby.
- 37:53Oh, yes, baby.
- 37:54That is my--
- 37:55Oh, the witch nails.
- 37:56The witch nails, baby.
- 37:57That is my favorite road trip snack.
- 38:00I'd be eating the bug out of some beagles, yes.
- 38:02Yeah.
- 38:03And then you stuff some dip in the beagle.
- 38:06Oh, yeah.
- 38:07Oh my god.
- 38:09Have you never been dipped?
- 38:10Do you?
- 38:10No.
- 38:11I've a perfect--
- 38:13Like fill the little cone with dip.
- 38:15Yeah.
- 38:16Yeah.
- 38:16Oh my god.
- 38:18Maybe we should be--
- 38:18It's a perfect smoking weed.
- 38:20Yeah.
- 38:20[LAUGHTER]
- 38:22Exactly.
- 38:23This word innovation comes from.
- 38:25What do you mean?
- 38:26I mean.
- 38:27What do you mean?
- 38:28Yeah, it's like the perfect vehicle,
- 38:30because then it's just stuffed filled with the dip.
- 38:33And then--
- 38:33Dude, like I just--
- 38:34I just--
- 38:35That frito is bean dip that comes in the little cans.
- 38:38Oh, nice.
- 38:39We could get that with the fritos or get like the beagles
- 38:42and put the beag dip inside of the beagles.
- 38:45Yeah, then we're really going to have gassy shall we?
- 38:49Just giving you a bean dip and beagles, man.
- 38:51Oh god.
- 38:52Just pull over and let me have fart breaks every like hour.
- 38:55Yeah.
- 38:56I mean, first thing called rolling the window down.
- 39:00Still.
- 39:01I can let me just do like a hot girl walk around the car.
- 39:04Just going to rub my tummy a little bit.
- 39:06Get all the teeth out.
- 39:09And let that--
- 39:10I was, you don't--
- 39:11Shit, your pants.
- 39:11I will forgive.
- 39:13I will forgive farts, you know?
- 39:15I have never shit my pants on a road trip.
- 39:17Really?
- 39:18On a road trip?
- 39:19On a road trip?
- 39:20Oh, I--
- 39:21It's not a thing.
- 39:22Oh my god, really?
- 39:24I was just really surprised that you have never
- 39:27shit your pants.
- 39:29I don't think I-- I mean, like a baby, like--
- 39:32As a sentient adult.
- 39:35I have not shit my pants.
- 39:36When were you sentient?
- 39:38When are we considering sentient?
- 39:4132.
- 39:42[LAUGHTER]
- 39:45It's amazing.
- 39:49OK.
- 39:50OK.
- 39:51Yeah.
- 39:51OK.
- 39:52Now, these are going to be good snacks.
- 39:53And then you said you're a podcast road trip person.
- 39:55So we'll find some good podcasts.
- 39:57Well, I think I think I'm a mix of really good music.
- 40:01Like, I love a 1970s playlist to kick me off, where, you know,
- 40:09maybe we'll even make a road trip playlist for you guys
- 40:12and share it when we do go on our inevitable trip all the way
- 40:16up to sent-ins and rights to go.
- 40:19And if anybody has any good snack combinations
- 40:23that they want to give us that we can try out,
- 40:26because that would be fun while we're on the road trip.
- 40:29We make a little series of our snack combinations.
- 40:32So we don't have any--
- 40:33We don't have any--
- 40:35They're going to suggest disgusting shit, though.
- 40:38I'll love you, Cany, if it's not gluten-free.
- 40:40Yes.
- 40:41I'll speak gluten-free.
- 40:42But yeah, she's home all due anything for our--
- 40:45I'll do for our future subscribers.
- 40:47Yeah, there you go.
- 40:48So if you're part of the Patreon, let us know when it will
- 40:51try your insane snack combos.
- 40:53And we'll try to figure out a gluten-free version
- 40:56if it doesn't exist.
- 40:58If you aren't suffering the pliant of a gluten-free--
- 41:00[LAUGHTER]
- 41:02And I really got to talk--
- 41:05I didn't talk about the podcast that I was listening to too
- 41:07deeply.
- 41:07So it is Kevin Eustis, the dark paranormal.
- 41:10And he has people right in, just these horrifying stories
- 41:15that have happened to them.
- 41:17You need to write in, because you've told
- 41:19me an incredible ghost story that happened to you
- 41:21a long time ago.
- 41:22So I'm going to send you this podcast,
- 41:24and you write to the email address.
- 41:28We need to talk about ghost.com, I think, is the website.
- 41:31And he's got this great British accent.
- 41:35And I have been listening to it in the car,
- 41:39like driving home at night from the bar and just out loud going--
- 41:43Nope.
- 41:44Nope.
- 41:45Nope.
- 41:46Nope.
- 41:46Nope.
- 41:47[LAUGHTER]
- 41:48Yeah, that's funny.
- 41:50Maybe I'll have to tell it here first.
- 41:52And then we'll see if we can get it picked up too.
- 41:54But yeah, it's pretty creepy.
- 41:56Yeah.
- 41:56We'll listen to a couple episodes of that,
- 41:58because I think it's worth a good listen.
- 42:00Yes.
- 42:01And listeners, we would love to hear what your favorite road
- 42:05trip activity is, whether it's music, books, podcasts.
- 42:09One of the things that I used to do is
- 42:11there is this podcast called Conspiracy Theories.
- 42:15I think a Spotify podcast, basically what they do
- 42:18is they take the official story of whatever the theory is.
- 42:23They break down that full story of the official story.
- 42:27And then the second episode is every conspiracy theory
- 42:30around the official story.
- 42:33And then they rate the actual likelihood
- 42:37based on everything and all that stuff.
- 42:40And so I've driven to Southern California so many times.
- 42:43And my friends and I go through two to three podcasts
- 42:47or two to three topics.
- 42:50And it's just so fun.
- 42:51Well, that's the advantage of listening to.
- 42:52Yeah, that sounds really cool.
- 42:53Yeah.
- 42:54Well, to find an advance, find a good way to be like,
- 42:57OK, we're going to listen to this one on the way.
- 42:58Yes.
- 42:59Yes, exactly.
- 43:00So we'd love to hear your different ones.
- 43:03And so for this episode, it's time for us to pack up
- 43:10and head out of here.
- 43:11But before we go, let's tell our travel companions
- 43:14how to find us on social media.

- 43:36And either going to Threads or Blue Sky.

- 44:05It's cold.
- 44:07No, it's just-- it's called "Peace of Blue Sky,"
- 44:10which is about cults.
- 44:11Yeah, I like cults sell you a piece of blue sky,
- 44:14but I never ask.
- 44:16We should listen to cult podcasts.
- 44:17I love cult stuff.

- 45:34We're journalists.
- 45:35Nothing but farts.
- 45:37Nothing but farts.
- 45:41What was it?
- 45:44Oh, I still love you the other day for some snacks.
- 45:47I was under house and we were watching Hunger Games in bed.
- 45:53And I said, she's like, do we need anything else?
- 45:55And I was like, yes, some snacks.
- 45:57Some snacks.
- 45:58And she walks in her bottle of snops.
- 46:01And she can't sit to me.
- 46:02And I just like, thank you.
- 46:05She like, didn't you ask me for snops?
- 46:07And I said, snacks, snacks.
- 46:09You know, honest mistake.
- 46:13I did have the shops.
- 46:14I tried the shops.
- 46:15I tried the shops.
