- 0:05The so Prince and I went on a 30 day
- 0:43fast over the month of March, which is our anniversary month
- 0:46at the end, on the 30th, 12th year.
- 0:49Woop woop. And my understanding of the fast
- 0:53was that we were fasting for the foundation of our marriage.
- 0:57If you go back and listen to part four of my interview with
- 1:02Rod, you'll hear more of my testimony around my marriage.
- 1:07And it was a really difficult fast, not just digestively, if
- 1:13you will, because I was doing only juice, tea and coffee, no
- 1:17eating at all for 30 days. I didn't chew anything but
- 1:20Communion and Prince on the other hand, was was had
- 1:27incorporated nuts. But that's besides the point.
- 1:30It it as we were going through the fast every night we would
- 1:35have these conflicts. And now 12 years into the
- 1:40marriage we have decided upon the truth that God is always
- 1:47dealing with our hearts in conflict.
- 1:51In the beginning of marriage we often saw conflict as God.
- 1:56If you would just fix my spouse, everything would be great.
- 2:01But as we matured and after our our marriage nearly fell apart,
- 2:06it became rather clear that no matter how much I pointed my
- 2:09finger at my husband as the source of my issues, God's
- 2:14response to me was consistently Carly, let's look at your heart.
- 2:20And the Bible does say the issues of life flow from the
- 2:24heart. At the end of this life, it's
- 2:27you and him. It's me and him.
- 2:30It's not me and Prince and Jesus, right?
- 2:36And so as we journeyed through this and we kept having to work
- 2:40on these serious and unresolved conflicts in our marriage, we
- 2:47became abundantly aware that we had bitterness and resentment in
- 2:54our heart towards one another individually.
- 2:57And we went into this time of lamenting and mourning.
- 3:00Prince said, four or five days we are going to read the book of
- 3:04Lamentations. And the objective is to lament
- 3:07the state of our hearts towards one another.
- 3:09And that rang really true because because of what we'd
- 3:14been through in the last four years, which was like I said,
- 3:18really God being like, stop telling me to fix your spouse
- 3:23and let's look at your heart, right?
- 3:25So we went into this time of mourning and one of the pivotal
- 3:29moments for me was God let me know that I had an idol in my
- 3:35heart. I have a teacher named Todd
- 3:39Edwards who teaches the Bible studies out of Bride Ministries
- 3:43and he had said a few weeks ago that defensiveness and offence
- 3:52are the fruit of us protecting wrong identity and protecting
- 3:59idols. So when you are offended by
- 4:02something, if you become defensive over something, that's
- 4:05the fruit of an idol, that's the fruit of a wrong identity.
- 4:10And I lived that out because what God pointed out to me one
- 4:13morning is he said, Carly, you continually indict me on charges
- 4:20of not being good because your idol in your heart says, until
- 4:27my marriage is perfect, God's goodness is called into
- 4:30question. His intent for my marriage is
- 4:36questionable. And that was a really hard thing
- 4:41to deal with because while he's right, he was right.
- 4:47That's exactly what was happening.
- 4:50And I ended up just telling the Lord I was even questioning my
- 4:55theology as I was saying this to him.
- 4:57But in in the throes of lamenting, I, I just let it rip.
- 5:04But I had said to him, Lord, I don't, I don't want to be
- 5:08married to Prince anymore. You be married to Prince through
- 5:15me. Let this be your marriage to
- 5:19Prince, because when I'm, when I'm the one married to Prince,
- 5:25I'm so selfish. I'm, I'm selfish.
- 5:31It's, you know, I, I expect too much.
- 5:34I, I, I expect him to always meet my needs.
- 5:39And it's just unrealistic. As as much as he may want to do
- 5:43that, it's unrealistic really to expect that our spouse is going
- 5:47to always show up perfect for us, be in the perfect mood,
- 5:51respond to the secret things in our mind, intuit our our
- 5:56expectations. Just it's not realistic, you
- 6:01know, And by the end of of the fast, we came to a a little
- 6:11cottage in Wisconsin and we were just hanging out.
- 6:13You know, we're going to break our fast at midnight.
- 6:16I was so excited to choose something Boy ended up having a
- 6:21really important heart to heart where we were able to talk
- 6:23through some of the things we'd we'd wanted to say to each other
- 6:27over the years, but never really did.
- 6:30And I've talked in the past about the importance of
- 6:34vulnerability and the the depth of the truth of the value of
- 6:39being willing to be vulnerable. Is it hit me in a new way
- 6:46because when we withhold ourselves from our spouses now
- 6:51I'm not talking about the kind of relationships that are
- 6:54clearly abusive. That's, you know, I'm talking
- 6:57about just standard dysfunction. When we withhold ourselves from
- 7:04our spouses, when we we we don't share our inner thoughts and
- 7:08feelings. When we we manipulate situations
- 7:13instead of being forthright about what we're seeing and what
- 7:17we're experiencing. When we when we take it upon
- 7:21ourselves to put up a wall so that we don't have to be seen or
- 7:27heard or understood and we don't have to really see, hear or
- 7:29understand our spouse. We are actually becoming a
- 7:32stumbling block for their walk with Christ because he said two
- 7:37become one. Now it doesn't mean that I no
- 7:39longer have my own mind. It just means that me as a
- 7:46person, I benefit his walk with the Lord.
- 7:49And if I withhold myself from him emotionally, mentally,
- 7:53spiritually, physically, I am inhibiting his walk with the
- 7:57Lord because who I am benefits who he is because Christ in me,
- 8:05right? It's Christ in me.
- 8:08And so I just want to encourage, I just want to encourage you
- 8:16that that self reflecting with the Lord and in the areas of our
- 8:20heart that are hard to look at is a is very fruitful.
- 8:26It is good. It's good for your marriage,
- 8:28it's good for your family, it's good for you, it's good for your
- 8:32walk with the Lord. It's not easy because when we
- 8:35deal with idols, it's not a quick process.
- 8:38There's a lot of grief that comes out when we realize we've
- 8:42put something above the King of glory in our hearts.
- 8:47But he reveals to redeem. He chastens those he loves.
- 8:55He's a good father. He prunes the vine, and it's
- 9:00necessary the.
