- 0:04Speaker 2: Royal, Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, it's the fourth-ranked Texas
- 0:08Speaker 2: Loguards hosting the top-ranked team.
- 0:10Speaker 1: In the nation, the Ohio State Buckeyes. Jacoby Jackson, the
- 0:14Speaker 1: running back, saying to take the snap from under center.
- 0:17Speaker 2: On fourth down and two at the Texas 13. Sand
- 0:21Speaker 2: under center. Pass the snap. It's a handoff to Kobe Jackson.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Downing forward. He did not get it. The Longhorns gang
- 0:29Speaker 2: tackle him and come up with easily their most important
- 0:32Speaker 2: play of the evening. Kiro Kanu and Jelani McDonald team
- 0:36Speaker 2: up on the tackle. It'll go over on downs to Texas.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Just a gain of a yard. Good snap and hold
- 0:43Speaker 2: from the right hash. Kick is on the way, and
- 0:45Speaker 2: the kick is good.
- 0:47Speaker 3: Longhorns are on the board.
- 0:49Speaker 1: They wanted more.
- 0:50Speaker 2: They settled for three. Ball on the right hash for Longhorn, fortunately.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Julian saying out of the gun.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Pass the snap. Back to throw. Pressure coming. Colin Simmons
- 0:59Speaker 1: has it. Down he goes. A big sack.
- 1:03Speaker 2: By Simmons to run him down, and it brings up
- 1:06Speaker 2: third down.
- 1:07Speaker 1: So it's fourth down.
- 1:08Speaker 2: And eight for Texas from the Longhorn 42-yard line with 2.21
- 1:11Speaker 2: to go in the third quarter. Texas trailing 23-3. Off
- 1:15Speaker 2: the left hash, Manning out of the shotgun. Has the
- 1:18Speaker 2: snap of fourth down and eight. Look, pressure coming.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Manning rolls to the right, goes ball caught.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Amari wins the first down across midfield and to the
- 1:28Speaker 2: 49-yard line.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Ohio State, it's a nine-yard catch and a move of
- 1:33Speaker 1: the chain.
- 1:34Speaker 4: Boy, that's a tough throw by Arch on the run.
- 1:36Speaker 5: He kind of went.
- 1:37Speaker 4: Over across his body, and then Winston still had to
- 1:40Speaker 4: get about five yards.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Out of the gun, off the right hash, out of
- 1:43Speaker 2: the pistol set. Now Smothers ships.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Arch. Shotgun snap. Play action. Throws to the end zone.
- 1:49Speaker 6: Caught.
- 1:49Speaker 1: Touchdown, Texas. Ryan Wingo.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Turn inside of the coverage of Devin Sanchez. And the
- 1:56Speaker 2: Longhorns have their first touchdown of the ballgame. Fourth down
- 1:59Speaker 2: and six from the Texas 32. Smeller ships around to
- 2:02Speaker 2: the right side of Manny.
- 2:04Speaker 7: Arch from the shotgun.
- 2:05Speaker 5: Pass the snap.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Back to throw.
- 2:07Speaker 5: Over the middle.
- 2:07Speaker 1: The ball's caught by Mosley. First down. Kidd spun around and.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Still pulled it down for a gain of 13.
- 2:15Speaker 1: March hung in there.
- 2:16Speaker 4: He got in, and Hollywood Smothers blitz protection doing a
- 2:19Speaker 4: great job. Ohio State did bring extra pressure.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Lineup in the pistol with Amari Winston. Lineup with the
- 2:25Speaker 2: blocking back on second and goal.
- 2:27Speaker 3: Hand off.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Smothers left side. Touchdown, Texas.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Hollywood Smothers in for the score, and here come the
- 2:34Speaker 2: Longhorns back to a one-score game with.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Just under half of the final quarter remaining.
- 2:39Speaker 2: Hawkins. Two for two tonight. This will be a 45
- 2:43Speaker 2: yarder from the left half.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Trying to put Ohio State up by nine points.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Good snap and hold and the kick on the way
- 2:52Speaker 2: and the kick is no good.
- 2:54Speaker 1: He pulled it left. It's no good.
- 3:02Speaker 4: Timing was thrown a little bit off by the snap.
- 3:05Speaker 4: Texas has a chance here with 4.16 to go.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Probably Brown remains the running back. Offset to the left
- 3:11Speaker 2: side of Manning. Shotgun snap to Arch on second down.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Sends it across the middle of all clock by Mosley
- 3:16Speaker 2: across the 45 and a first down.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Manning out of the pistol. Has the snap.
- 3:21Speaker 3: Turns.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Hands it.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Smothers inside the 30 and he has a first down.
- 3:25Speaker 2: On second down, now Brown shifts to the right side
- 3:28Speaker 2: of Manning. Arch from the shotgun, Manning with the snap, turns,
- 3:31Speaker 2: play action, throws over the middle, ball caught, Mosley inside
- 3:34Speaker 2: the 10 to the 5, and down to the 1-yard line.
- 3:39Speaker 1: 19 yards on it. Little for the moment save the touchdown.
- 3:43Speaker 1: It will be first and.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Goal Texas at the Ohio State one-yard line.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Manning under center to take the snap. Third and goal.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Hand off. Diving for the goal line.
- 3:53Speaker 7: Hollywood smothers.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Touchdown Texas.
- 3:56Speaker 3: Smothers over the top.
- 3:59Speaker 1: And the Longhorns are an extra point.
- 4:02Speaker 2: Away from taking their first lead of the night with
- 4:06Speaker 2: 25 seconds remaining in the game. Now here comes a
- 4:09Speaker 2: pretty important extra point. For Gianni Spedic. Trying to give
- 4:16Speaker 2: Texas its first lead of the night. Out of the
- 4:18Speaker 2: hole to Max Chimeno. The snap from Trey DeBuck to
- 4:22Speaker 2: give Texas the lead. Good snap and hold. The extra
- 4:25Speaker 2: point kick is up. It's good. 25 seconds to go.
- 4:29Speaker 2: It's Texas 24, Ohio State 23. First and 20 with
- 4:35Speaker 2: 17 seconds to go. The ball is back at the
- 4:38Speaker 2: 15-yard line. shotgun snap to say it swings it across
- 4:41Speaker 2: the middle balls caught lovebirds are going to make the
- 4:44Speaker 2: tackle inbounds of the 20-yard line the clock is going
- 4:47Speaker 2: to continue to move down the seven down the six
- 4:50Speaker 2: down the five to.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Four to three to two.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Shotgun snap to say it got the throw flings it
- 4:57Speaker 2: up downfield the pass is knocked away and in fact
- 5:04Speaker 2: intercepted by grayson littleton what a way to end it
- 5:08Speaker 2: How about this Texas Longhorn team? They come back from
- 5:13Speaker 2: 20 points down to beat the top-ranked.
- 5:17Speaker 1: Ohio State Buckeyes.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Final score, the Texas Longhorns 24, the Ohio State Buckeyes 23.
- 5:35Speaker 8: It's the Craig Way Show with the voice of the
- 5:37Speaker 8: Texas Longhorns and Hall of Fame broadcaster, Craig Way.
- 5:44Speaker 2: Well, kind of like the football game, the start of
- 5:47Speaker 2: the show was kind of sluggish at the outset and
- 5:50Speaker 2: got good at.
- 5:51Speaker 5: The end there.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Good afternoon and welcome to the program here on Sports
- 5:56Speaker 2: Radio AM 1300. So we have a little technical issue there.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Credit to the producer, Jake Herman, on the phone with
- 6:02Speaker 2: tech support. to get that squared away and turned around.
- 6:07Speaker 2: And they were actually pretty responsive. It just took all
- 6:12Speaker 2: the brains of the operation here technically to respond, right?
- 6:16Speaker 9: Yeah, I like your analogy there, Craig. Way to really
- 6:19Speaker 9: tie that bridge together. A little bit of a rocky start,
- 6:22Speaker 9: and that's why you don't quit.
- 6:24Speaker 5: No, stay till the end. That's what we did there.
- 6:27Speaker 2: I'm glad you could join us this afternoon. And obviously, there,
- 6:32Speaker 2: Jake with the montage show for the program.
- 6:34Speaker 5: And what a ballgame.
- 6:35Speaker 2: Obviously, Longhorns with that rally back. They defeated the Ohio
- 6:39Speaker 2: State Buckeyes 24-23. This, of course, is Longhorns Monday. And
- 6:43Speaker 2: what we do on Monday is we bring you Head
- 6:46Speaker 2: Coach Steve Sarkisian's news conference live every Monday morning. Mike
- 6:49Speaker 2: Hardball Harge and I actually take care at 11 a.m.
- 6:53Speaker 2: on the UT campus in case you're wondering. So you
- 6:55Speaker 2: can join us at 11 o'clock in the morning. where
- 6:58Speaker 2: we bring you some interviews from the locker room after
- 7:00Speaker 2: the game and some analysis and things like that, updated
- 7:03Speaker 2: college football rankings.
- 7:04Speaker 5: Spoiler alert, Texas is number one.
- 7:07Speaker 2: And then at the bottom of the hour, Sark comes
- 7:11Speaker 2: in and does his press conference, and we bring you
- 7:13Speaker 2: the press conference live. Now, I know not all of
- 7:15Speaker 2: you can be around a radio or even near your
- 7:19Speaker 2: iHeartRadio app or whatever during that time, Monday late morning,
- 7:24Speaker 2: being what it is, you might be. be in meetings
- 7:28Speaker 2: or at a lunch thing or something like that. That's why,
- 7:31Speaker 2: for the purposes of this program, in the two o'clock hour,
- 7:35Speaker 2: the three o'clock hour, and the four o'clock hour, we
- 7:37Speaker 2: bring you the press conference, kind of a re-airing, but
- 7:41Speaker 2: in pieces. We bring it to you in the soundbite fashion.
- 7:44Speaker 2: We'll set up all of Sark's comments, whereas the 1130 edition,
- 7:48Speaker 2: you're just hearing it live as it's happening where folks
- 7:51Speaker 2: are asking questions. So that's coming up here in a
- 7:54Speaker 2: few minutes. We'll do that We do have inconceivable this hour,
- 7:59Speaker 2: so we'll get something. There's a sports-related twist to it
- 8:02Speaker 2: as well as fast food. Junk food update on that.
- 8:06Speaker 2: More Sark in the 3 o'clock hour and the 4
- 8:08Speaker 2: o'clock hour. And, of course, it was the first Sunday
- 8:13Speaker 2: of play in the National Football League.
- 8:15Speaker 5: And where would we.
- 8:16Speaker 2: Be without rehashing a loss by the Dallas Cowboys and
- 8:21Speaker 2: the Houston Texans?
- 8:22Speaker 5: Both going down. But Texans, I would say.
- 8:26Speaker 2: In heartbreaking fashion for the Cowboys, just kind of heartless fashion,
- 8:32Speaker 2: you might say, in the second half where it just
- 8:33Speaker 2: kind of whittled away from the just. It went back
- 8:36Speaker 2: to a lot of the same issues we saw last
- 8:39Speaker 2: year where the defense just could not get stops on
- 8:42Speaker 2: the New York Giants on those last two drives that
- 8:44Speaker 2: the Giants had.
- 8:45Speaker 9: Yeah, death by 1,000 paper cuts for the Cowboys in
- 8:48Speaker 9: that one, or death by 1,000 darts, if you'd like
- 8:51Speaker 9: to put it that way. A winning debut for John
- 8:54Speaker 9: Harbaugh as the head coach of the New York Giants. And, Craig,
- 8:57Speaker 9: I guess misery loves company. The Rams fall, the Commanders fall,
- 9:01Speaker 9: and both of the Texas NFL teams start 0-1.
- 9:03Speaker 2: Hey, of all of our teams, yours was the most
- 9:06Speaker 2: competitive and had an opportunity. Anybody who's a Texans fan also,
- 9:10Speaker 2: because it was heartbreaking. We'll hear from D'Amico Ryan's head coach.
- 9:13Speaker 2: We'll hear from Ryan Schottenheimer. The Cowboys head coach. We'll
- 9:15Speaker 2: hear from Dak Prescott. We'll hear from C.J. Stroud, whose
- 9:20Speaker 2: turnover issues apparently have not been resolved.
- 9:23Speaker 5: Just that. But obviously, we're going to hear from Longhorns
- 9:26Speaker 5: as well.
- 9:27Speaker 2: If you have questions, comments, things like that that you'd
- 9:31Speaker 2: like to comment on there. Already, we got Greg saying,
- 9:34Speaker 2: hook them from Florence. What a weekend. Enjoyed your calls always.
- 9:37Speaker 2: I appreciate that. Thank you very much, Greg. That's one
- 9:41Speaker 2: of those deals. You've heard me say this. If you've
- 9:42Speaker 2: listened to this program for any amount of time, You've
- 9:45Speaker 2: heard me say this. There's an old hackneyed, cliched phrase
- 9:53Speaker 2: that play-by-play announcers who've been around probably a long time
- 9:57Speaker 2: or whatever. And have called games for a long time
- 10:02Speaker 2: use for a game like what happened the other night,
- 10:06Speaker 2: especially the fourth quarter.
- 10:07Speaker 5: And that phrase is, it was a good horse to ride.
- 10:11Speaker 2: Because all you're trying to do is just hop on
- 10:13Speaker 2: and ride it through and make sure you're staying, you know,
- 10:16Speaker 2: within the boundaries and you're doing the things that you
- 10:18Speaker 2: have to do.
- 10:19Speaker 5: You're hitting your marks.
- 10:20Speaker 2: You're, you know, the assignments you have as a play-by-play voice,
- 10:25Speaker 2: down and distance and the result of the play and
- 10:27Speaker 2: who made the tackle and blah, blah, blah, yardage and
- 10:29Speaker 2: so on.
- 10:30Speaker 5: And then you reset it and you do it all
- 10:31Speaker 5: over again. That's how it works.
- 10:35Speaker 2: And in a game like that, whereas for the better
- 10:39Speaker 2: part of two and a half quarters, the Longhorns, uh,
- 10:42Speaker 2: to use Sark's phrase, couldn't get out of their own
- 10:44Speaker 2: way and then just struggled. And Jeremiah Smith was making
- 10:47Speaker 2: them pay as well. Uh, it was, it was really,
- 10:50Speaker 2: really difficult when you're down 23, three going into the
- 10:54Speaker 2: fourth quarter fact, I think it was what was, uh, just, uh,
- 10:59Speaker 2: around eight minutes to go or whatever it was when
- 11:01Speaker 2: the Longhorns finally got their first touchdown to make it
- 11:03Speaker 2: a 23 to 10 ball game. Um, You know, it
- 11:08Speaker 2: looked pretty bleak, but they stayed the course. They stayed
- 11:11Speaker 2: with it. They fought hard, got through, and defense made
- 11:14Speaker 2: adjustments and got big stops, and they had those three drives.
- 11:17Speaker 2: We're going to recap that for you, the length and
- 11:21Speaker 2: the breadth of those drives, those three fourth-quarter scoring drives,
- 11:24Speaker 2: because they were obviously critical.
- 11:25Speaker 5: All right, so we'll do all that.
- 11:27Speaker 2: If you want to text the program, you can text
- 11:29Speaker 2: the word Texas, followed by your question or comment to 81530.
- 11:32Speaker 2: You text your question or comment, First, the word Texas,
- 11:38Speaker 2: then your question or comment to 81530.
- 11:41Speaker 5: Standard messaging and data rates may apply.
- 11:43Speaker 2: Also, you could reach us via the TalkBack microphone as well.
- 11:48Speaker 2: All you have to do is make sure you have
- 11:49Speaker 2: the iHeartRadio app downloaded on your smartphone, be it your
- 11:54Speaker 2: Android or your iPhone, and then you do a.
- 11:57Speaker 5: Search for AM13 under the zone.
- 11:59Speaker 2: It'll pop right up, and then when it does, You
- 12:01Speaker 2: press the little red button with the white microphone, and
- 12:03Speaker 2: you can leave us voice message up to 30 seconds.
- 12:05Speaker 2: So you can do that as well. So we're going
- 12:07Speaker 2: to get to, if you have questions, we'll get to those.
- 12:09Speaker 2: We're going to hear from Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkeesian
- 12:12Speaker 2: coming up. There's a lot to get to on a
- 12:14Speaker 2: busy Longhorns Monday right here on Sports Radio AM 13
- 12:17Speaker 2: Under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app.
- 12:20Speaker 10: Hey, hey, hey.
- 12:21Speaker 7: What you got to say?
- 12:34Speaker 2: It's funny, when I hear this song, I think of
- 12:36Speaker 2: that commercial, the one that Shohei Otani's in.
- 12:41Speaker 3: New Balance.
- 12:41Speaker 5: Yeah, the New Balance one.
- 12:43Speaker 3: They've only played it on every Major League Baseball game
- 12:45Speaker 3: for the.
- 12:46Speaker 7: Past two years.
- 12:47Speaker 5: Yeah, but it's not.
- 12:49Speaker 2: I know why you're playing this, for folks who don't
- 12:53Speaker 2: know what this is.
- 12:55Speaker 5: It's hollywood swinging is the name of right who's.
- 12:58Speaker 2: The band it's cool in the gang it is cool
- 13:00Speaker 2: and it was suggested by our promo whiz kid anton
- 13:03Speaker 2: like him yeah because of hollywood's mother's game winning touchdown
- 13:07Speaker 2: uh let's hear from longwood's head coach steve sarkisian from
- 13:11Speaker 2: the weekly news conference heard earlier this morning on 13
- 13:13Speaker 2: under the zone a.
- 13:15Speaker 11: Little recap from saturday night uh get a chance to
- 13:18Speaker 11: kind of watch the tape and see the game and
- 13:22Speaker 11: evaluate some things. I thought first of all, I wanna
- 13:25Speaker 11: start with this again is just thanking our fans. I
- 13:28Speaker 11: thought the atmosphere in DKR from where we were in
- 13:36Speaker 11: 2021 to where we are today, it's pretty electric. And
- 13:40Speaker 11: a ton of that starts with our students and their
- 13:44Speaker 11: commitment to this program and to their experience at the
- 13:48Speaker 11: University of Texas. them sleeping overnight for spots at game day,
- 13:54Speaker 11: all the way until, you know, you're seeing the eyes
- 13:57Speaker 11: of Texas and there's still 105,000 people in the stands.
- 14:00Speaker 11: I mean, that stuff's pretty special. And so I don't
- 14:02Speaker 11: want that to go unnoticed, and I appreciate their support
- 14:05Speaker 11: and hanging with us when we were struggling the other night,
- 14:09Speaker 11: being there with us and kind of willing us back
- 14:11Speaker 11: into the game. And again, you know, the home field
- 14:14Speaker 11: advantage thing is real right now. I think we're 21-1
- 14:17Speaker 11: in our last 23 games at DKR. I think we've
- 14:20Speaker 11: got an 11-game winning streak. And so, you know, there
- 14:24Speaker 11: is that advantage, I think, just from– crowd atmosphere, but
- 14:28Speaker 11: I think there's a level of confidence for our players too,
- 14:31Speaker 11: which is really good.
- 14:33Speaker 7: You know, the first half, we just didn't play very
- 14:36Speaker 7: good football.
- 14:36Speaker 11: You know, quite frankly, obviously, the ball, the turnover on
- 14:41Speaker 11: the first play of the game, what a tremendous job
- 14:44Speaker 11: by our defense on sudden change of forcing a field
- 14:47Speaker 11: goal there on the first drive. And you know, it's ironic,
- 14:51Speaker 11: On Wednesday practices all year long, that's what we do.
- 14:54Speaker 11: We come out of stretch and the first thing we
- 14:56Speaker 11: do is a sudden change drill and we spot the
- 14:57Speaker 11: ball at the 18-yard line. And so I don't think
- 15:00Speaker 11: it was foreign for our players on defense to go
- 15:03Speaker 11: out and play the way they played that first drive.
- 15:07Speaker 11: But when you look at that first half, the fifth
- 15:10Speaker 11: play of the game, we think we're hitting a touchdown
- 15:13Speaker 11: pass to Cam Coleman, an unfortunate play of just a
- 15:17Speaker 11: freaky play that I think he kind of.
- 15:19Speaker 7: Trips on the SEC logo. He loses his balance.
- 15:22Speaker 11: The ball bounces off his arm, and it's an interception,
- 15:26Speaker 11: which then leads to a touchdown. And then we kind
- 15:29Speaker 11: of stub our toe, and they drive, I think, about
- 15:31Speaker 11: a 70-yard drive, and they go for it on fourth down.
- 15:34Speaker 11: And just the will of the defense to hang in
- 15:36Speaker 11: there and get the stop on fourth down. And then
- 15:39Speaker 11: we drive again, and we dial one up for Ryan.
- 15:42Speaker 11: And it's just unfortunate we don't make that play. So
- 15:44Speaker 11: there was a lot of plays in the first half
- 15:46Speaker 11: that maybe could have swung some momentum back in her
- 15:48Speaker 11: favor It just didn't. And inevitably, you head into the
- 15:52Speaker 11: fourth quarter and you're down 23 to three. And you
- 15:56Speaker 11: talk about everybody buckling down, making a few adjustments on
- 16:00Speaker 11: the defensive side of the ball. And I think Ohio
- 16:04Speaker 11: State's three drives were three plays, one yard punt. And
- 16:08Speaker 11: then we go 15 plays, 91 yards, touchdown. They come back,
- 16:12Speaker 11: they go three plays, six yards, punt. We go 13 plays,
- 16:16Speaker 11: 72 yards, touchdown. And then they have the seven-play drive
- 16:20Speaker 11: where they miss the field goal. And really on that
- 16:22Speaker 11: drive is the broken play where the quarterback kind of
- 16:26Speaker 11: rolls to his right and then throws it all the
- 16:27Speaker 11: way back across the field to the tight end. It
- 16:30Speaker 11: was kind of a broken play. But what an amazing
- 16:32Speaker 11: rush on the field goal block. Lance Jackson, Alex January,
- 16:37Speaker 11: those guys were in there, got their hands up. We
- 16:40Speaker 11: get the missed field goal. Then we go 12 plays,
- 16:42Speaker 11: 73 yards, touchdown. So you look at 15, 13, 12
- 16:46Speaker 11: play drives when we had to have it. I just
- 16:49Speaker 11: thought was indicative of the kind of the psyche of
- 16:54Speaker 11: this team, their willingness to dig deep, to execute.
- 16:57Speaker 7: Obviously, a couple of.
- 16:58Speaker 11: Critical fourth down conversions in there. Great play by Amari
- 17:01Speaker 11: Winston to get a first down on fourth and nine.
- 17:04Speaker 11: heck of a catch by Emmitt Mosley on fourth and
- 17:06Speaker 11: six over the middle. But I thought in all of that,
- 17:10Speaker 11: in those drives, I thought that our ability to maintain
- 17:13Speaker 11: balance on offense, we ran the football effectively and we
- 17:17Speaker 11: were getting some good boxes to do it against. But
- 17:20Speaker 11: You have to call it and you have to execute it.
- 17:22Speaker 7: So I thought.
- 17:22Speaker 11: Hollywood and Raleigh were both really good in those instances.
- 17:26Speaker 11: And then as we touched on our red zone execution
- 17:28Speaker 11: and obviously our goal to go execution, being able to
- 17:31Speaker 11: get in the goal line, run the football into the
- 17:33Speaker 11: end zone, I thought was big for us. So all
- 17:36Speaker 11: in all, it was a heck of a win. We
- 17:37Speaker 11: were not perfect. And we got plenty of things to
- 17:40Speaker 11: work on. Our ball security is awful right now, if
- 17:43Speaker 11: you want to know the truth. And that's not something
- 17:45Speaker 11: that that we take pride in it all. We take
- 17:48Speaker 11: pride in our ability to take care of the ball.
- 17:51Speaker 11: And so we have got to improve our ball security
- 17:53Speaker 11: because it wasn't just about the turnovers. It was the
- 17:56Speaker 11: other fumbles. I mean, Emmitt has the fumble. Cam Coleman
- 17:59Speaker 11: makes an incredible recovery. Niblett muffs the punt. Cade Phillips
- 18:03Speaker 11: makes an incredible recovery. Arch gets loose with the ball
- 18:06Speaker 11: in the red area. They call it incomplete, but Dylan Sikorski...
- 18:09Speaker 11: you know, amazing effort to get on that ball if
- 18:12Speaker 11: it was a fumble. So we have got to value
- 18:14Speaker 11: the football more in the organization than we have through
- 18:17Speaker 11: two games. And then defensively, our third down defense has
- 18:20Speaker 11: to improve. We're too good up front with our pass rushes.
- 18:24Speaker 11: We're too good with our coverages to be last in
- 18:27Speaker 11: the Southeastern Conference in third down defense right now. So
- 18:30Speaker 11: I can just spotlight two things right now that I
- 18:32Speaker 11: can tell you we have got to improve upon as
- 18:35Speaker 11: a team as we continue to move forward. As far
- 18:39Speaker 11: as this week goes, Jeff Traylor continues to do it again.
- 18:43Speaker 7: They're 2-0. They're playing really good football. We talk about
- 18:48Speaker 7: the ball.
- 18:48Speaker 11: These guys have created five turnovers through two games. They
- 18:52Speaker 11: haven't turned the ball over once yet. They've got a
- 18:55Speaker 11: veteran quarterback in Owen McCown. He's a three-year starter. He
- 18:58Speaker 11: knows what he's doing. He executes their stuff. and they've
- 19:01Speaker 11: got a veteran defense. I know there's new starters, but
- 19:04Speaker 11: there's a lot of old players on that defense, and
- 19:06Speaker 11: they play like it, and so they're.
- 19:08Speaker 7: Going to come in here ready to go. We have
- 19:10Speaker 7: got to make.
- 19:11Speaker 11: Sure that we continue to improve, and I think it
- 19:13Speaker 11: starts with the individuals, coaches, players, individually improving so that
- 19:18Speaker 11: collectively we can improve. We have got to continue to
- 19:21Speaker 11: get better as the season goes on, and it starts
- 19:23Speaker 11: this week.
- 19:24Speaker 7: It started today, Monday, in practice.
- 19:27Speaker 2: So there it is, opening comments from Longhorn's head coach,
- 19:30Speaker 2: Steve Sarkisian. We'll get to more of his comments coming up.
- 19:33Speaker 2: We do have Inconceivable up next here on Longhorn's Monday
- 19:37Speaker 2: afternoon on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone on
- 19:39Speaker 2: the iHeartRadio app.
- 19:40Speaker 12: Here on a Monday, Sports.
- 19:43Speaker 2: Radio AM 13 Under the sun on the text line.
- 19:47Speaker 2: Nice text. Folks saying, we're lucky to have you. My
- 19:50Speaker 2: wife's an A & M graduate. We had the Aggie
- 19:51Speaker 2: broadcast on the car Saturday. It was substantially lower quality.
- 19:55Speaker 2: Every four-yard game, the guy's going. Nuts like the Aggie score.
- 19:58Speaker 2: I don't know about that. I like Andrew Monaco. I
- 20:00Speaker 2: like his crew. They do get fired up for that.
- 20:05Speaker 2: And I wondered if we'd hear back from our man today,
- 20:07Speaker 2: and we have. And I always give him the floor,
- 20:11Speaker 2: and then I have a response. His response is, I
- 20:14Speaker 2: would like to clear up an inaccurate statement that Sark
- 20:16Speaker 2: made during his post-game news conference. He stated that we
- 20:19Speaker 2: were booed. No, fans were not booing the players or team.
- 20:22Speaker 2: They were booing the quote-unquote offensive coordinator. They were expressing
- 20:25Speaker 2: their frustration with the inept play calling that accounted for
- 20:29Speaker 2: 97 first half total yards.
- 20:31Speaker 5: Okay, let me see if I'm clear.
- 20:33Speaker 2: It's good that you can speak for the entire fan
- 20:35Speaker 2: base when you say fans were not booing.
- 20:37Speaker 5: How do you know? who everybody was booing. Okay, that's one. Two,
- 20:41Speaker 5: when he said we were.
- 20:42Speaker 2: Booed, how do you know that Sark was talking about
- 20:44Speaker 2: just the team and not himself and.
- 20:46Speaker 5: The coaching staff?
- 20:47Speaker 1: You don't know that, but you can go.
- 20:49Speaker 5: Ahead and make that statement.
- 20:50Speaker 2: And then the business about expressing their frustration with the
- 20:53Speaker 2: inept play calling that accounted for 97 first half total yards.
- 20:57Speaker 2: You're exactly right, 97. They had a fumble on the
- 21:01Speaker 2: first play from scrimmage, had a long downfield pass, probably
- 21:04Speaker 2: should have been a touchdown call. But as Sark mentioned
- 21:07Speaker 2: in the opening statement, Cam Coleman stumbled over the logo, whatever,
- 21:12Speaker 2: fell down, lost it, ball pops up, freakish interception, long drive.
- 21:16Speaker 5: They didn't have many possessions in the first half.
- 21:19Speaker 2: And then other than that one field goal drive, they
- 21:23Speaker 2: weren't very effective offensively. You're right, 97. But one thing
- 21:27Speaker 2: I've always noticed about you when you text, you never...
- 21:32Speaker 2: give credit when something goes good. So let me illustrate
- 21:34Speaker 2: something for you. Their last three drives, 91 yards and
- 21:38Speaker 2: 15 plays that took six and a half minutes off
- 21:41Speaker 2: the clock. 73 yards and 12 plays that took five
- 21:46Speaker 2: and a half off the clock. 72 yards and 13
- 21:51Speaker 2: plays that took another five minutes off the clock. My friend,
- 21:54Speaker 2: that's 40 plays with over 230 yards of total offense
- 21:58Speaker 2: and and did it in over 16 and a half minutes.
- 22:00Speaker 2: Yet you didn't mention that. All you wanted to mention
- 22:03Speaker 2: was the 97 yards. That's where you come across as
- 22:07Speaker 2: being very shallow. So I'll give you the floor anytime
- 22:12Speaker 2: you want to, to mention the inept, and then as
- 22:16Speaker 2: you always put in quotations, offensive coordinator.
- 22:18Speaker 5: But you got to meet me halfway, boss. You got
- 22:21Speaker 5: to come back and.
- 22:21Speaker 2: Acknowledge three fourth quarter drives, three, totaling 230 yards of
- 22:28Speaker 2: offense with a total of 40 plays and over 16
- 22:35Speaker 2: minutes of clock time you didn't mention any of that
- 22:37Speaker 2: against number one against number one yeah it gets the
- 22:40Speaker 2: number one team in the country too by the way
- 22:42Speaker 2: like i said you're welcome to text anytime you want
- 22:45Speaker 2: i'll read your stuff on that but In order to
- 22:47Speaker 2: have any respect at all, you got to meet it halfway, man.
- 22:51Speaker 1: You can't all throw it one side.
- 22:52Speaker 2: Because your agenda is not to like Sark as the
- 22:55Speaker 2: play caller. You made that abundantly clear, and that's okay.
- 23:00Speaker 2: But if you want any kind of respect in terms
- 23:04Speaker 2: of the way you're texting us, present both sides.
- 23:07Speaker 5: That's what I always do.
- 23:09Speaker 1: Present both sides.
- 23:11Speaker 5: Live a little.
- 23:12Speaker 1: You might like it.
- 23:14Speaker 5: Second hour coming up on 1300 The Zone.
- 23:42Speaker 2: Second hour of the program here on Sports Radio AM
- 23:45Speaker 2: 1300 The Zone. And we're with you up until 5 o'clock.
- 23:52Speaker 2: Glad to have you with us this afternoon. Before we
- 23:54Speaker 2: get back to some sound, we're going to hear some
- 23:56Speaker 2: more from Sark. We're also going to hear from Brian
- 23:58Speaker 2: Schottenheimer and also from D'Amico Ryans this hour. We're going
- 24:03Speaker 2: to do that as well. But we obviously... you know, uh,
- 24:08Speaker 2: giving you the floor on some things you want to have.
- 24:10Speaker 2: We have somebody else asking about something.
- 24:12Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 24:12Speaker 9: The guys of Texas podcast joining us on YouTube says
- 24:15Speaker 9: while we're at it talking about your addressing the texter,
- 24:18Speaker 9: can we address the fans calling for KJ Lacey?
- 24:21Speaker 3: Same fans that called for arch when Quinn was.
- 24:23Speaker 2: Here, we couldn't make it through the 60 minutes before
- 24:26Speaker 2: they called for arches head. You mean the sec offensive
- 24:29Speaker 2: player of the week that arch that guy?
- 24:32Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 24:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:34Speaker 5: Um, You know, I learned that a long time ago.
- 24:37Speaker 2: Like I said last week, you know, the one-time backup
- 24:40Speaker 2: quarterback for Texas, Donovan Forbes, who said the most popular
- 24:43Speaker 2: guy on campus is the backup quarterback. You know, Arch
- 24:47Speaker 2: had a difficult time, you know, having enough time early
- 24:51Speaker 2: on to find receivers. And there were the turnovers, obviously,
- 24:54Speaker 2: the fumble and the ball that popped out of Cam
- 24:56Speaker 2: Coleman's off of his chest when he hit the turf there.
- 25:00Speaker 5: There was that.
- 25:01Speaker 2: And Orts did miss some targets, too. He did overthrow somebody.
- 25:04Speaker 2: He also put some balls in some difficult spots. And
- 25:06Speaker 2: how about the play ESPN highlighted? that fourth down play
- 25:12Speaker 2: when he's rolling to the right under pressure and throws
- 25:14Speaker 2: across his body to Amari Winston, who makes that catch.
- 25:18Speaker 2: There's not many guys who can make that throw and
- 25:21Speaker 2: just calm and steady under pressure to lead those three
- 25:25Speaker 2: fourth quarter drives I was talking about of 15 plays
- 25:28Speaker 2: and 91 yards and 73 yards and 12 plays and
- 25:31Speaker 2: 72 yards and 13 plays. It takes a, you know,
- 25:36Speaker 2: a pretty calm and collected guy to be able to
- 25:39Speaker 2: do that.
- 25:39Speaker 5: And he, and he did.
- 25:40Speaker 2: So KJ Lacey, I think has a future in getting
- 25:44Speaker 2: him in play, but Arch Manning is the quarterback of
- 25:46Speaker 2: the team, but that that's just kind.
- 25:49Speaker 5: Of keep it with tradition.
- 25:50Speaker 9: You know, I don't think there's anything today specifically that
- 25:54Speaker 9: KJ Lacey can give you that Arch Manning cannot, but But.
- 25:58Speaker 2: I understand with fans getting away. Somebody else said, my
- 26:02Speaker 2: group left Schultz Garden after the third quarter stalled drive.
- 26:06Speaker 2: I immediately put in my earbuds and tuned you in.
- 26:08Speaker 2: Halfway to the car, I said, hey, you guys might
- 26:10Speaker 2: want to tune in. My wife and I listened to
- 26:12Speaker 2: the comeback on the way home just in time for
- 26:14Speaker 2: the final drive. We called a good game, thanks. Lots
- 26:16Speaker 2: of good football, including our alma mater, the team that
- 26:18Speaker 2: was in Denton. They're going to be in San Marcos
- 26:23Speaker 2: this week.
- 26:24Speaker 3: Denden North gets a big win.
- 26:26Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 26:27Speaker 2: So, North Texas will play Texas State on Saturday morning
- 26:32Speaker 2: at 11. And that'll be down at Bobcats Stadium.
- 26:37Speaker 3: Boy, the Bobcats need a win there.
- 26:38Speaker 5: They do.
- 26:39Speaker 2: And that was a difficult loss for them. A heartbreaking
- 26:43Speaker 2: loss for them to UTSA. We'll ask Jeff Traylor. the
- 26:47Speaker 2: head coach of UTSA, about it on the program tomorrow
- 26:51Speaker 2: because Jeff Traylor is going to be on with us tomorrow.
- 26:53Speaker 2: We have him on frequently, especially in seasons when Texas
- 26:57Speaker 2: plays UTSA. He's an old friend and a guy who
- 27:00Speaker 2: did a great job. I think I've called three of
- 27:02Speaker 2: the state championship games he coached in when he was
- 27:04Speaker 2: at Gilmer and has done a fine job at UTSA.
- 27:08Speaker 2: But he'll be with us tomorrow afternoon. All right, let's
- 27:12Speaker 2: go back to hearing from Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkeesian.
- 27:15Speaker 2: This was from the press conference this morning. And again,
- 27:21Speaker 2: we always bring you the press conference live here on
- 27:25Speaker 2: The Zone as part of our Longhorn Monday programming.
- 27:30Speaker 5: We bring that to you.
- 27:31Speaker 2: So we'll go back to, let me.
- 27:38Speaker 5: Make sure I find it.
- 27:39Speaker 2: You just, I know you sent it all to me
- 27:41Speaker 2: i'm just looking uh that's not it that's not it should.
- 27:44Speaker 3: I get it started here it is i got it
- 27:46Speaker 3: i got it i got it.
- 27:47Speaker 5: I just it was kind of disguised by something.
- 27:49Speaker 2: Anyway uh he was asked about the the first half
- 27:53Speaker 2: offense and how much of it was uh to our
- 27:58Speaker 2: one of our favorite texters about inept offense how much
- 28:02Speaker 2: was it mistakes.
- 28:03Speaker 5: What would you know what was the sum of the
- 28:04Speaker 5: parts of all of that.
- 28:05Speaker 11: I really felt like we were just kind of getting
- 28:07Speaker 11: in our own way you know um You know, the
- 28:10Speaker 11: first play of the game, it was like the ideal defense.
- 28:14Speaker 11: You know, we were kind of banking on maybe we'd
- 28:16Speaker 11: get a field pressure, which we got. We got two
- 28:19Speaker 11: for two blockers out there with Emmett and Ryan who
- 28:22Speaker 11: are really good blockers for us and getting the ball
- 28:24Speaker 11: in Relique Brown's hand in the open field.
- 28:26Speaker 7: Like, I would take that.
- 28:28Speaker 13: But.
- 28:29Speaker 11: Fundamentally, we were incorrect. We got the ball in our
- 28:31Speaker 11: inside arm. He doesn't have a weapon to help make
- 28:34Speaker 11: the safety miss. The ball comes out. I touched on
- 28:37Speaker 11: the fifth play to Cam. I touched on the play
- 28:39Speaker 11: to Ryan in the red area. I felt like we
- 28:41Speaker 11: were kind of getting in our own way. Um, and,
- 28:43Speaker 11: and even on some third downs, I thought we're, you know,
- 28:46Speaker 11: we could have, we could have converted even earlier in
- 28:48Speaker 11: the game. And obviously we, we finished nine to 16,
- 28:51Speaker 11: but I felt like we could have been better in
- 28:52Speaker 11: the first half. I felt like in the second half, we,
- 28:55Speaker 11: we just executed better, you know, and through it all,
- 28:59Speaker 11: I thought we played really good at the line of scrimmage.
- 29:01Speaker 11: I thought our offensive line had a very good football game.
- 29:03Speaker 11: I thought Dylan Sikorski, um, you know, the plan initially
- 29:06Speaker 11: was to rotate he and Lawrence. Um, The way the
- 29:10Speaker 11: first half went, I just wasn't comfortable, ready to switch
- 29:13Speaker 11: them out. And then Dylan was playing so good, we
- 29:15Speaker 11: just kind of let it go. I thought Melvin had
- 29:17Speaker 11: a good game. Trevor had a good game. So the
- 29:19Speaker 11: tight end, Spencer Shannon, all those guys. So all in all,
- 29:23Speaker 11: I just think it came back to just executing. And
- 29:26Speaker 11: we still weren't perfect.
- 29:27Speaker 7: We dropped some.
- 29:28Speaker 11: Balls that I know we're more than capable of making
- 29:31Speaker 11: some plays on. But it was great to see some
- 29:33Speaker 11: new faces. Amari Winston, as I touched on, stepping into
- 29:37Speaker 11: a little bit of new role Jermaine Bishop didn't play
- 29:39Speaker 11: a lot but man he was rolling on the post
- 29:41Speaker 11: and we ended up getting a pass interference on that
- 29:43Speaker 11: thing so we've gotten we got to have more guys
- 29:45Speaker 11: step up they're going to show us that we can
- 29:48Speaker 11: trust them in practice so that we can play them
- 29:49Speaker 11: more in game but I really just think it was
- 29:52Speaker 11: settling down and executing when we had.
- 29:53Speaker 2: Our chances okay uh Jeremiah Smith called eight passes for
- 29:57Speaker 2: 164 yards and a touchdown And he had that number
- 30:01Speaker 2: midway through the third quarter. Eight catches, 164 yards, and
- 30:05Speaker 2: a touchdown. I think that's where I came out of
- 30:06Speaker 2: the break after he'd had that big catch. And I said,
- 30:09Speaker 2: as Mark Jackson would have said, Mama, there goes that
- 30:12Speaker 2: man again because it was something else.
- 30:15Speaker 5: He was playing great.
- 30:17Speaker 2: He finished with eight catches for 164 yards and a touchdown.
- 30:20Speaker 2: Had a couple of drops and then just did not
- 30:23Speaker 2: catch a pass the rest of the way. So Sark
- 30:26Speaker 2: was asked, What was the difference in how they defended
- 30:29Speaker 2: Jeremiah Smith, especially in the last quarter and a half
- 30:32Speaker 2: of the game?
- 30:32Speaker 11: Well, I think the biggest thing we did was we
- 30:35Speaker 11: just said, hey, we're going to have to play more
- 30:36Speaker 11: man coverage on the guy. We were trying to double.
- 30:39Speaker 11: We were trying to reroute. We weren't getting very good reroutes.
- 30:42Speaker 11: He was getting free runs at safeties. And it just
- 30:47Speaker 11: was not a great avenue for success.
- 30:49Speaker 7: And through it all, we had a light box.
- 30:51Speaker 11: So the run game was getting leaky because we didn't
- 30:54Speaker 11: have an extra safety down. And the pass rush wasn't
- 30:57Speaker 11: where we needed it to be. So we shifted gears
- 30:59Speaker 11: and credit Champ for doing that. And we got a
- 31:02Speaker 11: little more aggressive at the line of scrimmage, which in
- 31:04Speaker 11: turn forced us to be a little more aggressive on
- 31:07Speaker 11: the perimeter. Now they hit the one that's a heck
- 31:09Speaker 11: of a throw by Julian with a free runner in
- 31:10Speaker 11: his face, hitting him on the double move down our sideline.
- 31:14Speaker 7: But we didn't panic.
- 31:15Speaker 11: And the next two third downs, Masco's in man coverage
- 31:19Speaker 11: against him. And he knocks a slant route down and
- 31:22Speaker 11: then plays him extremely well, squeezes him to sideline on
- 31:24Speaker 11: the fade. And so We challenged him to go play,
- 31:28Speaker 11: and that allowed us, I think, to be a little
- 31:29Speaker 11: better against the run, and that allowed us to put
- 31:32Speaker 11: a little more pressure on the quarterback.
- 31:34Speaker 2: Okay, next he was asked to evaluate his offensive line.
- 31:38Speaker 11: I do think that these guys played well together, and
- 31:43Speaker 11: that in part is when you've got a veteran center,
- 31:47Speaker 11: which we've had that before with Jake Majors in year
- 31:49Speaker 11: four and year five, And now with Connor in year five,
- 31:52Speaker 11: I just think the communication is at a really high
- 31:55Speaker 11: level up there.
- 31:56Speaker 7: Got an experienced player now in Brandon Baker.
- 31:58Speaker 11: You got Trevor, who's got a whole year under his
- 32:01Speaker 11: belt at left tackle. Dylan's played a lot of football
- 32:05Speaker 11: at Oregon state before he got here. And Melvin's played
- 32:07Speaker 11: a lot of football at wake four. So I think
- 32:09Speaker 11: there's a lot of experience. Um, and I think they're
- 32:11Speaker 11: just working cohesively well together. But what I liked was
- 32:15Speaker 11: the physicality that they played the game with, you know,
- 32:17Speaker 11: they moved the line of scrimmage and they created running lanes.
- 32:21Speaker 11: And I thought the runners did a really nice job of,
- 32:25Speaker 11: we didn't go down on contact. We made guys miss,
- 32:28Speaker 11: we ran through safeties. They were physical, um, And so
- 32:33Speaker 11: all of those things together made up for.
- 32:36Speaker 7: Man, Arch had some really good pockets. He had really
- 32:39Speaker 7: good time.
- 32:40Speaker 11: I think there was one on that fourth down where
- 32:42Speaker 11: I thought we could have been a little better in
- 32:44Speaker 11: the pocket, and Arch has to flush to his right.
- 32:46Speaker 7: But he had really good pockets. We had really good protection.
- 32:48Speaker 11: But that starts because you're running the football well, and
- 32:51Speaker 11: now defensive linemen can't just pin their ears back and rush.
- 32:54Speaker 11: So as far as Trevor goes, yeah, I mean, You know,
- 32:59Speaker 11: there's premium positions in football for a reason, and left
- 33:02Speaker 11: tackle's one of those. And, you know, that was, it's
- 33:06Speaker 11: been one for us that, you know, one, two, three
- 33:09Speaker 11: years ago, we found out what this guy was made of,
- 33:11Speaker 11: you know, when he had to play in some high-level games,
- 33:14Speaker 11: talking Georgia, Clemson, Arizona State, Texas A & M. And
- 33:17Speaker 11: then he came back last year and had a really
- 33:19Speaker 11: good year. And I think, you know, him coming back,
- 33:23Speaker 11: playing in the style of which he played the other night,
- 33:26Speaker 11: we all know he's a very good pass protector. but
- 33:29Speaker 11: his ability to block the run game and do it
- 33:31Speaker 11: with confidence in his leadership, I think all adds up
- 33:34Speaker 11: to that kind of permeates throughout that offensive line.
- 33:38Speaker 7: And so we're very lucky to have him. Okay.
- 33:40Speaker 6: All right.
- 33:41Speaker 2: Next, he was asked, and by the way, Trevor Goosby
- 33:43Speaker 2: was named the offensive lineman of the week in the SEC.
- 33:49Speaker 2: So that offense that had the trouble getting going like
- 33:53Speaker 2: we said kicked it into high gear in the second
- 33:55Speaker 2: half and he was named offensive lineman of the week i.
- 33:57Speaker 9: Saw an entire twitter thread his big blocks on the
- 34:01Speaker 9: running plays in the fourth.
- 34:02Speaker 2: Quarter yeah really really important there uh he was asked
- 34:06Speaker 2: um uh i'll tell you what the he was also
- 34:10Speaker 2: asked about amari winston And you think about the clutch
- 34:13Speaker 2: catches he's made, big blocks were covered, that fumble down
- 34:18Speaker 2: smothers on the play before the game-winning touchdown. Now, I
- 34:21Speaker 2: don't know if it would have been overturned on replay.
- 34:23Speaker 2: It was bang, bang, and it was massive humanity and
- 34:25Speaker 2: all that. But the ball did come loose, and Maury
- 34:27Speaker 2: Winston fell on it.
- 34:29Speaker 9: I watched the broadcast back, and Steve Shaw was about
- 34:32Speaker 9: to say who he thought recovered, and then they had
- 34:34Speaker 9: to cut him off and get back to the action.
- 34:36Speaker 5: Yeah. So, anyway.
- 34:39Speaker 2: it that's that's the way that that went but uh
- 34:42Speaker 2: Amari Winston fell on that ball but anyway Sark was
- 34:44Speaker 2: asked to elaborate on this role for Winston.
- 34:46Speaker 11: You know Amari's an elite route runner he's got great
- 34:49Speaker 11: hands um and you know Nick was getting Nick got
- 34:53Speaker 11: a little banged up and Nick was playing a lot
- 34:54Speaker 11: and we wanted to get Amari involved and um you
- 34:58Speaker 11: know he was running you know kind of a motion
- 35:01Speaker 11: out he was running kind of an out with a
- 35:03Speaker 11: return he was the check down on the play But
- 35:06Speaker 11: as I touched on, Arch got pressure right up the
- 35:08Speaker 11: middle and got flushed to his right.
- 35:10Speaker 7: And that Amari just happened to be there.
- 35:12Speaker 11: But, you know, he had about five and a half,
- 35:14Speaker 11: six yards to go after he made that catch. And
- 35:17Speaker 11: so his ability to put his foot in the ground
- 35:18Speaker 11: and get vertical and not dance for a younger player,
- 35:22Speaker 11: I thought was great situational awareness, knowing it was fourth down.
- 35:26Speaker 11: He had to go get the first down. And, man,
- 35:28Speaker 11: he barely got that thing. It was a huge play.
- 35:30Speaker 5: Yeah, indeed. All right.
- 35:31Speaker 2: So he was asked, how does he handle– this coming
- 35:35Speaker 2: week for his team after being on that mountaintop experience,
- 35:38Speaker 2: the high there on Saturday night.
- 35:41Speaker 7: You guys have heard.
- 35:42Speaker 11: Me say a couple of these things before, but it's
- 35:44Speaker 11: probably a good reminder. Who you are some of the
- 35:47Speaker 11: time is who you are all the time. And we
- 35:49Speaker 11: don't pick and choose how we prepare. We don't pick
- 35:51Speaker 11: and choose how we want to play based on the opponent.
- 35:55Speaker 11: And I think the other thing is that the opinions
- 35:58Speaker 11: of others doesn't dictate how we prepare, how we play.
- 36:01Speaker 11: You know, a week ago, the narrative was we can't
- 36:04Speaker 11: win the big game. You know, how are we going
- 36:06Speaker 11: to beat Ohio State? What are we going to do?
- 36:08Speaker 11: Now the opinions is, oh, now we're the best team
- 36:10Speaker 11: in the country, allegedly. And so everybody's patting us on
- 36:13Speaker 11: the back. Two polar opposites of where we are. We
- 36:17Speaker 11: need to stay right here, right? And we need to
- 36:19Speaker 11: stay enamored with what we need to do and focus
- 36:21Speaker 11: on us and continue to try to improve. Irregardless of
- 36:25Speaker 11: who the opponent is or isn't, it's about what we
- 36:28Speaker 11: do to perform to put ourselves in the best position
- 36:30Speaker 11: to be successful.
- 36:31Speaker 5: Okay. And let's get one more from him.
- 36:34Speaker 2: And this is on the leadership role that he has
- 36:38Speaker 2: from his guys. And how does it help them stay
- 36:42Speaker 2: in the present and kind of turn the page onto
- 36:44Speaker 2: the next play?
- 36:44Speaker 7: I think, you know, that's part of life, right?
- 36:48Speaker 11: And that's the challenge that you go through is like,
- 36:51Speaker 11: do you fall prey to what other people say about you?
- 36:56Speaker 7: Good, bad, indifferent, whatever that is.
- 36:58Speaker 11: Or are we strong enough internally to know that this
- 37:01Speaker 11: is who I am or this is who we are
- 37:03Speaker 11: and this is how we go about our business.
- 37:05Speaker 7: I'm not saying that's easy to do. You know, that's difficult.
- 37:08Speaker 11: And I think that's our job as coaches is to
- 37:10Speaker 11: get them into that frame of mind, understand that. You know,
- 37:13Speaker 11: but for a lot of these guys, you know, this
- 37:16Speaker 11: is a third straight year. We've been ranked number one
- 37:18Speaker 11: in the country at some, at some point of the season.
- 37:20Speaker 11: And so this isn't necessarily foreign territory for us, but
- 37:25Speaker 11: I don't know how well we handled it the previous
- 37:27Speaker 11: two years. And I don't know how worthy we always
- 37:29Speaker 11: were of, of those rankings of the opinions of others.
- 37:33Speaker 7: What we do is what matters.
- 37:34Speaker 11: And I think that that, that is something that when
- 37:37Speaker 11: you talk about the arches, the Trevors, the Collins, the Jelani's,
- 37:41Speaker 11: those guys who have been in this thing now with
- 37:43Speaker 11: us through this journey and understand the ranking doesn't matter
- 37:47Speaker 11: if anything all the ranking does is put a bigger
- 37:49Speaker 11: bullseye on you right how we perform is what matters
- 37:52Speaker 11: the most and how do you want to perform is
- 37:55Speaker 11: how you prepare mentally physically emotionally to get ready to play.
- 37:58Speaker 2: All right there it is we'll hear some more from
- 37:59Speaker 2: sark coming up later up next we hear from the
- 38:02Speaker 2: head coaches of the state's two nfl teams cowboys and
- 38:06Speaker 2: texans when we continue on 1300 the zone okay i'm
- 38:11Speaker 2: looking for the connection here On your return cut on
- 38:15Speaker 2: this one.
- 38:16Speaker 3: You know, you take a hop, skip, and a jump.
- 38:18Speaker 3: Just got back. Quite the comeback.
- 38:21Speaker 5: Okay.
- 38:22Speaker 3: That's a good rock beat.
- 38:23Speaker 4: Did you ever have to work a Cheap Trick concert?
- 38:27Speaker 5: I did. I did.
- 38:29Speaker 2: Here's a story about Cheap Trick. This would have been 1982.
- 38:34Speaker 2: I was in college, and I worked Cheap Trick.
- 38:43Speaker 2: And I think it was a Doobie Brothers at the
- 38:45Speaker 2: time farewell.
- 38:47Speaker 5: Tour, they called it back.
- 38:48Speaker 2: And one of those farewell tours, it's anything but a
- 38:50Speaker 2: farewell tour since the Doobies are still touring.
- 38:51Speaker 5: I just saw them a month ago.
- 38:55Speaker 2: But it's one of those things where it was two
- 39:02Speaker 2: bands and Cheap Trick was the first band. And then
- 39:06Speaker 2: I think Doobie Brothers was second. This was at the
- 39:09Speaker 2: old Summit in Houston, which is now Joel Osteen's church.
- 39:14Speaker 5: That building.
- 39:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I drive by it every time I go into town. Okay,
- 39:17Speaker 2: that was the summit. That's where the Rockets won two
- 39:20Speaker 2: world titles in the mid-90s. It's where the Houston Arrows
- 39:25Speaker 2: of the WHA.
- 39:26Speaker 5: Played back in the day in the 70s. And many, many.
- 39:30Speaker 2: Concerts, worked many, many concerts there off of that, including this.
- 39:33Speaker 2: So it was like 1982. And cheap trick, open for,
- 39:39Speaker 2: I think, Doobie Brothers or something like that. Show ends,
- 39:44Speaker 2: we get done And for whatever reason, because we were
- 39:49Speaker 2: staying a whole weekend, the guy that I was working
- 39:53Speaker 2: with there, the hotel that we normally stay not far
- 39:57Speaker 2: from the arena was booked or something like that. We
- 39:59Speaker 2: ended up just saying, you know what, we're going to
- 40:01Speaker 2: stay down at Galveston and just be there because we
- 40:03Speaker 2: can just kind of chill on the beach until the
- 40:05Speaker 2: next night and then Sunday and that whole bit. So
- 40:08Speaker 2: we go back to the hotel, which was there like
- 40:13Speaker 2: an oceanfront hotel there at Galveston. And we go over
- 40:17Speaker 2: to the pier over there where the old flagship inn
- 40:19Speaker 2: hotel was. We go in the hotel bar, one of
- 40:21Speaker 2: the bars, and Cheap Trick jumps up on stage and
- 40:24Speaker 2: they're playing. In the bar and they're at Galveston after
- 40:29Speaker 2: they had played earlier that night.
- 40:30Speaker 5: So it was pretty cool.
- 40:31Speaker 3: That's awesome.
- 40:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 40:32Speaker 5: It just came from nowhere and they just jumped up
- 40:34Speaker 5: on stage and they did a set.
- 40:36Speaker 3: Happened to me one time in Atlanta with The Script.
- 40:39Speaker 1: Oh yeah.
- 40:40Speaker 9: Which is not, you know, it's kind of a 2000
- 40:41Speaker 9: mid two thousands pop band.
- 40:43Speaker 3: It was still cool.
- 40:44Speaker 4: Yep.
- 40:45Speaker 5: Yep. Very, very true. Okay. Uh, let's hear us.
- 40:48Speaker 2: And if it didn't go well for you, the Cowboys
- 40:51Speaker 2: or the Texans in different ways, uh, last night, Sunday
- 40:54Speaker 2: night football, the Cowboys just couldn't stop the giants when
- 40:57Speaker 2: they had to like first half. And then the two
- 40:59Speaker 2: drives in the second half after the Cowboys and pulled
- 41:02Speaker 2: back to within a score. Uh, but, It was kind
- 41:05Speaker 2: of the same old problems that they had defensively. They
- 41:08Speaker 2: wind up losing 28-20, and Brian Schottenheimer was asked to
- 41:10Speaker 2: describe the defensive performance of the team.
- 41:13Speaker 14: I thought overall we were really, as a football team,
- 41:18Speaker 14: we were pretty poor. You know, just give Coach Harbaugh
- 41:21Speaker 14: and his team a bunch of credit. They were the
- 41:23Speaker 14: more physical team tonight. That's certainly not our standard. It's
- 41:27Speaker 14: certainly not. how we see our identity playing. They shoved
- 41:31Speaker 14: us around in the running game. We couldn't get the
- 41:33Speaker 14: running game going on offense. Situationally, they were outstanding. Did
- 41:38Speaker 14: a really good job of keeping the ball away from
- 41:41Speaker 14: us in the second half. I think they had the
- 41:43Speaker 14: ball for 36 minutes, 40 seconds. So this is a
- 41:48Speaker 14: humbling business. And we got humbled tonight. And that's what
- 41:51Speaker 14: I told the guys. And we lost mile one of
- 41:55Speaker 14: a 17-mile marathon. And we have to be better. And
- 41:59Speaker 14: we will be better. The only way to do that
- 42:00Speaker 14: is get back to work.
- 42:01Speaker 5: All right.
- 42:02Speaker 2: And that means, among areas, something that Sark talked about
- 42:05Speaker 2: with his defense is they've got to do better on
- 42:08Speaker 2: third down. I think they said the long ones were
- 42:10Speaker 2: last in the SEC in third down efficiency defense.
- 42:14Speaker 9: Yeah, well, Brad Jackson scrambled for a bunch of them,
- 42:16Speaker 9: and then the guy that Sarg will later call an
- 42:18Speaker 9: alien on the other sideline picked up a few, too.
- 42:21Speaker 5: Yep, that's true.
- 42:23Speaker 2: But the Cowboys also struggled on Thursday. They had them,
- 42:25Speaker 2: and I kept saying this. As Linda and I were
- 42:27Speaker 2: watching last night, I kept saying, okay, they've got to
- 42:29Speaker 2: get a stop now. they got to get a stop
- 42:31Speaker 2: now and it just wasn't happening so he's asking about
- 42:34Speaker 2: the struggles for his defense on third down.
- 42:36Speaker 14: There's different things i want to look at the film
- 42:38Speaker 14: but i mean we're turning guys free of the flat
- 42:41Speaker 14: you know one of the things not excuse guys we
- 42:43Speaker 14: did not we did not play well um but you
- 42:45Speaker 14: got young players and young player closes in jackson dart
- 42:49Speaker 14: boots and gets outside we don't push three different times
- 42:52Speaker 14: to flat route excuse my language um you know like
- 42:56Speaker 14: you know those are those are going to happen and
- 42:58Speaker 14: we have to coach the young players better but when
- 43:00Speaker 14: you play young players it's uh it's it's it's part
- 43:03Speaker 14: of the deal and they need to learn quickly okay.
- 43:06Speaker 2: All right so there was that he was also asked
- 43:09Speaker 2: about that interception dat prescott was trying to get something
- 43:11Speaker 2: going downfield near the end of the half and just
- 43:13Speaker 2: flings it up and it winds up being picked off
- 43:16Speaker 2: and leads to the giants going right before the half ended.
- 43:18Speaker 14: He was trying to throw it away and he didn't
- 43:20Speaker 14: get enough on it and uh That happens, but it
- 43:22Speaker 14: was a big momentum swing. They went down, scored, and
- 43:25Speaker 14: they got the ball in the second half, and they scored.
- 43:27Speaker 14: That's unfortunately what we call a double dip, and they
- 43:30Speaker 14: double dipped us. I thought we offensively responded very well.
- 43:35Speaker 14: We just didn't get enough ops there late, but certainly
- 43:38Speaker 14: did not come out of the game very fast on
- 43:41Speaker 14: either side.
- 43:42Speaker 2: The double dip he's referring to is the Giants scoring
- 43:44Speaker 2: before the half, then getting the football to start the
- 43:46Speaker 2: second half and going down and scoring. The different phraseology,
- 43:50Speaker 2: I'd gotten comfortable with calling it the daily double.
- 43:53Speaker 5: If you could do that. But it does work with
- 43:55Speaker 5: the word double there.
- 43:56Speaker 3: If the Longhorns got daily double, we're having a very
- 43:58Speaker 3: different conversation.
- 43:59Speaker 2: No question about that. Dak Prescott asked about his overall
- 44:03Speaker 2: thoughts on the offense.
- 44:04Speaker 10: Some self-inflicted wounds. didn't get going early, right. Three and out, uh,
- 44:08Speaker 10: to start the game. Uh, and as you said it, um,
- 44:12Speaker 10: the interception at half, I mean, that was crucial. I'm
- 44:14Speaker 10: trying to throw the ball away. Uh, that got made
- 44:16Speaker 10: a hell of a play. I've got to make sure
- 44:18Speaker 10: it's out of bounds though. Um, yeah, I was surprised. Uh,
- 44:23Speaker 10: when I went back, obviously, uh, I think that was
- 44:26Speaker 10: a huge part in the game. They scored before half.
- 44:27Speaker 10: They got the ball right start of half, and they
- 44:29Speaker 10: went and scored. Limited our possessions in the second half.
- 44:31Speaker 10: Only gave us two possessions, and that was the game
- 44:33Speaker 10: right there.
- 44:34Speaker 2: Yeah, there were also some key drops in the game
- 44:36Speaker 2: from his receivers, and he was asked about those.
- 44:39Speaker 5: Never expect that.
- 44:39Speaker 10: Never think that's going to happen. Yeah, it was football.
- 44:45Speaker 10: Those guys, I know they want those back, just like
- 44:48Speaker 10: I want that interception back. That's the game, and that's
- 44:52Speaker 10: why we didn't get going early. When we needed to,
- 44:57Speaker 10: no different than my interception. Plays you want back, things
- 44:59Speaker 10: you regret. That's a hell of a football team we played.
- 45:02Speaker 10: Credit to them. They did a good job. They executed
- 45:05Speaker 10: their game plan. They stopped our run. They controlled the
- 45:09Speaker 10: time and the possessions and limited us in the second
- 45:11Speaker 10: half and didn't give us an opportunity to get back
- 45:14Speaker 10: into it.
- 45:15Speaker 5: All right. Domingo Ryan's.
- 45:17Speaker 2: Texans fell 36 31 to the bills and they uh
- 45:21Speaker 2: had the lead they were behind and they had the
- 45:22Speaker 2: lead they were behind by two scores came back took
- 45:25Speaker 2: the lead again and then yet it was buffalo uh
- 45:29Speaker 2: making the difference and really and truly ryan's will tell
- 45:32Speaker 2: you the defensive lapses in the first half were as
- 45:34Speaker 2: important as the ones in the second.
- 45:36Speaker 13: Half to start off credit to the to the bills
- 45:39Speaker 13: they did a really great job today they found a
- 45:42Speaker 13: way to win the game and and we did it
- 45:44Speaker 13: the uh The issues there for us defensively, we had
- 45:48Speaker 13: multiple opportunities to make plays. I had my chances to
- 45:51Speaker 13: make plays on the football. We didn't make plays. We
- 45:54Speaker 13: gave up way too many explosives. So you give up explosives,
- 45:57Speaker 13: you have opportunities to take the football away and you
- 46:00Speaker 13: don't do those things and you're going against the top
- 46:02Speaker 13: offense in the NFL. That's what's going to happen. We
- 46:05Speaker 13: got to cover better. We got to finish better. And
- 46:08Speaker 13: we did not do that today. Really proud of our
- 46:11Speaker 13: offense for the way that they drove the ball down
- 46:14Speaker 13: consistently all day. They drove the ball up and down
- 46:16Speaker 13: the field, gave us more than enough points than we
- 46:19Speaker 13: needed to go win this football game. But this game
- 46:22Speaker 13: came down to the football.
- 46:24Speaker 9: Right.
- 46:24Speaker 7: We didn't take it away.
- 46:25Speaker 13: So they had zero turnovers and we had two. and
- 46:28Speaker 13: they were able to get points off of those turnovers.
- 46:31Speaker 5: We play a.
- 46:32Speaker 13: Game like that, every time this team has won the
- 46:34Speaker 13: turnover battle, they win the football game, and they won
- 46:37Speaker 13: it today, and that was the difference in the game.
- 46:39Speaker 2: He was also asked to describe the running back play
- 46:42Speaker 2: he got from David Montgomery and from Woody Marks.
- 46:44Speaker 13: David did an outstanding job today, and David doesn't do
- 46:47Speaker 13: a great job. We're not talking about Davis without talking about.
- 46:50Speaker 7: The offensive line.
- 46:50Speaker 13: I thought those guys controlled the line of scrimmage really well,
- 46:53Speaker 13: especially in those short yardage critical situations. We were able
- 46:56Speaker 13: to Press forward, gain a yard, keep our offense out
- 46:58Speaker 13: on the field.
- 46:59Speaker 7: David ran it well. Woody also ran it well.
- 47:02Speaker 13: So really love where we're headed with that one-two punch
- 47:05Speaker 13: at the running back position.
- 47:06Speaker 7: Those guys did a really great job.
- 47:07Speaker 5: And then one from C.J.
- 47:09Speaker 2: Stroud here because it was the final drive where he
- 47:11Speaker 2: had the ball stripped from him when the Texans were
- 47:13Speaker 2: driving and were in the red zone and were in
- 47:16Speaker 2: position to win the football game. And he had the
- 47:18Speaker 2: ball stripped from him, lost it. He was asked to
- 47:21Speaker 2: walk everybody through that last drive.
- 47:23Speaker 6: Yeah, I thought.
- 47:24Speaker 15: Did a good job starting with a positive play in
- 47:26Speaker 15: that two-minute. Got down there, you know, and then can't
- 47:29Speaker 15: get stoned, made it like that. I think that, you know,
- 47:32Speaker 15: that sack really kind of, you know, made it a
- 47:34Speaker 15: little tougher. But even then, we still had a chance. But,
- 47:37Speaker 15: you know, I'm trying my best to protect the ball,
- 47:39Speaker 15: but also to make plays. You know, we needed seven
- 47:42Speaker 15: right there, so I can't be, you know, super conservative.
- 47:45Speaker 15: I got to be able to take shots. But sometimes
- 47:47Speaker 15: it doesn't roll your way. So, I mean, we'll try
- 47:50Speaker 15: to fix that and then, you know, go for it.
- 47:52Speaker 2: All right, we'll hear more from all four of those
- 47:54Speaker 2: guys coming up next hour. We have more on the
- 47:57Speaker 2: Longhorns and college football coming up next on 13 Under
- 47:59Speaker 2: the Zone on the iHeartRadio app.
- 48:01Speaker 5: This particular cut that you selected.
- 48:13Speaker 2: Well, first of all, tell me your reason for that,
- 48:15Speaker 2: and then I'm going to tell you something about it.
- 48:17Speaker 5: Well, we're going to.
- 48:17Speaker 3: Move on up.
- 48:18Speaker 9: Curtis Mayfield, as the Longhorns do much of the same
- 48:21Speaker 9: in this week's college football rankings.
- 48:24Speaker 5: Yes, they did. The reason why I say that.
- 48:28Speaker 2: Is because this was a tune, and folks listening to
- 48:34Speaker 2: this program, listening to the station, know they can hear
- 48:36Speaker 2: Bucky and BK.
- 48:37Speaker 5: After we're done at five o'clock.
- 48:40Speaker 2: And that was a big, when Bucky was doing the
- 48:43Speaker 2: show when we were across town, that was always a
- 48:45Speaker 2: big return cut for them at Curtis.
- 48:48Speaker 5: Oh, okay.
- 48:48Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 48:49Speaker 2: Predates my time in Austin by a little bit. There's
- 48:52Speaker 2: a lot that predates your time. There's a lot that
- 48:55Speaker 2: predates your time on Earth.
- 48:56Speaker 3: Just in general?
- 48:57Speaker 5: You know, it just, yeah.
- 48:59Speaker 2: There's a lot that just kind of Credate your time
- 49:01Speaker 2: here on planet Earth.
- 49:02Speaker 3: I was looking in the mirror, though, Craig.
- 49:04Speaker 9: I mean, I swear there's a few more of these
- 49:06Speaker 9: gray hairs starting to pop out after that game last night.
- 49:09Speaker 3: I'm just saying.
- 49:10Speaker 5: Stop.
- 49:11Speaker 1: I'm just saying. All right.
- 49:14Speaker 2: The new top 25 college football polls are out. They
- 49:18Speaker 2: came out yesterday. Yes, Texas did move to number one.
- 49:20Speaker 2: one in both the AP and the coaches poll. It's funny.
- 49:23Speaker 2: We'll hear more from Sark talking about that, going, look,
- 49:25Speaker 2: we've been ranked number one before, you know, since he's
- 49:27Speaker 2: been the coach. So it's not an unusual situation for them.
- 49:33Speaker 2: Beating the number one team in the country, never an
- 49:36Speaker 2: easy proposition. is something that's happened a little more rarely.
- 49:40Speaker 2: So for Texas to get that, that was big for
- 49:44Speaker 2: them on Saturday. But the Longhorns are number one in
- 49:46Speaker 2: both polls. And all of these rankings are the same
- 49:49Speaker 2: in both polls. Texas one, Georgia two, Notre Dame three,
- 49:53Speaker 2: Indiana four, Miami five, Ohio State six.
- 49:58Speaker 3: That's ridiculous. It's ridiculous to drop them to six.
- 50:02Speaker 2: And Sark will agree with you on that. Like I said,
- 50:05Speaker 2: we'll hear from Warren talking about that. He strongly feels
- 50:08Speaker 2: that Ohio State should not be punished for losing by
- 50:14Speaker 2: one point on the road to a top-five team.
- 50:17Speaker 9: I mean, what did they show you in that game
- 50:20Speaker 9: on the road in Austin that you can say, okay,
- 50:23Speaker 9: I'm confident that I can still– I'm confident to drop
- 50:27Speaker 9: them behind Georgia, Notre Dame, Indiana, and Miami on that?
- 50:30Speaker 3: Who have played?
- 50:31Speaker 5: Nobody.
- 50:32Speaker 2: Well, and I think therein lies the rub of a
- 50:38Speaker 2: lot of the debate and discussion on this. Now, this
- 50:42Speaker 2: thing is still gonna go on. And folks are still
- 50:45Speaker 2: gonna have this back and forth about how tough is
- 50:51Speaker 2: your schedule? Who are you playing? Where are you playing?
- 50:55Speaker 2: And when are you playing them? And how you value
- 50:58Speaker 2: that win or loss against other ranked teams based on
- 51:04Speaker 2: the opponents they have and how they did. When we
- 51:09Speaker 2: had the little technical problem at the start of the program,
- 51:13Speaker 2: Colin Cowherd was still going over on the air, and
- 51:16Speaker 2: he had a take on that. He was recapping the
- 51:20Speaker 2: Texas-Ohio State game, and he had Sark's comments, which we
- 51:23Speaker 2: haven't replayed yet. We will before we're done here about
- 51:27Speaker 2: Ohio State and all that. and about how they shouldn't
- 51:30Speaker 2: be punished. And he talked about, you know, about the
- 51:35Speaker 2: value that you assign to teams who lose big-time college
- 51:43Speaker 2: football matchups as opposed to the weight you give to
- 51:46Speaker 2: a team that beats a G6 school or another school
- 51:53Speaker 2: that's far down the list. The loss, should it be
- 51:56Speaker 2: weighed more heavily than the win? And this was also
- 52:02Speaker 2: discussed on college game day on Saturday morning when Sark
- 52:05Speaker 2: was on the set with the guys. And Reece Davis
- 52:07Speaker 2: pointed out, because Sark had started to mention this, Reece
- 52:10Speaker 2: Davis pointed out quad one victories, quad two, like in basketball,
- 52:15Speaker 2: that the tournament selection committee uses as an evaluative tool.
- 52:21Speaker 2: And I think it works pretty well, I think, the process.
- 52:24Speaker 2: And I don't know if you can put it in
- 52:28Speaker 2: the same basket to do it the same way. But
- 52:31Speaker 2: you should be able to ascertain the degree of difficulty
- 52:36Speaker 2: by playing a top five team on the road and
- 52:37Speaker 2: losing by one point as opposed to a team or
- 52:41Speaker 2: teams that beat up on other teams that just quite
- 52:47Speaker 2: frankly are not to that level. Georgia beat what? Western Kentucky.
- 52:50Speaker 2: Notre Dame pounded Rice. Indiana beat, it was Howard, was it,
- 52:54Speaker 2: that Indiana beat?
- 52:55Speaker 3: Think so and then shout out to DC.
- 52:58Speaker 2: Yeah and and then and then uh Miami beating Florida
- 53:03Speaker 2: A & M Miami Miami ended up on inconceivable for
- 53:06Speaker 2: how easy their game was yeah so I mean there's
- 53:09Speaker 2: that uh LSU which was number seven defeated Louisiana Tech
- 53:14Speaker 2: uh then the top 10 closes out in the AP
- 53:17Speaker 2: poll with Ole Miss A & M and Alabama um
- 53:20Speaker 2: You know, Ole Miss beat Charlotte, who had just lost
- 53:22Speaker 2: to an FCS team, the Citadel, the week earlier.
- 53:25Speaker 3: Yeah, but they've got the Louisville win.
- 53:27Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 53:28Speaker 2: A & M played a representative non-conference opponent in Arizona State,
- 53:32Speaker 2: and it was a ballgame for a while. And then
- 53:33Speaker 2: Alabama had a conference game, road.
- 53:35Speaker 5: Game, in Kentucky.
- 53:36Speaker 3: Yeah, a tale of two halves for Bama.
- 53:38Speaker 2: Yeah. So, anyway, that's part of where all of that
- 53:42Speaker 2: is going, where a lot of.
- 53:45Speaker 5: That discussion is. So, meanwhile....
- 53:51Speaker 2: Other college football notes to pass along. This is not
- 53:56Speaker 2: good news for Tennessee, and the Longhorns will see them
- 53:58Speaker 2: coming up in 12 days. Ethan Davis, they're starting tight end,
- 54:03Speaker 2: suffered a season-ending ACL injury in their win at Georgia
- 54:09Speaker 2: Tech when they beat Georgia Tech 45-24. He had touchdown
- 54:12Speaker 2: receptions in each of the Volunteers' first two games, but
- 54:15Speaker 2: he is done for the season, so the Longhorns will
- 54:17Speaker 2: not see him in a couple of weeks. Florida State,
- 54:21Speaker 2: You know, folks were wondering, you know, what was going
- 54:24Speaker 2: to happen, you know, after their loss to SMU and
- 54:30Speaker 2: Mike Norvell and what his future was all about. He's
- 54:33Speaker 2: still a head coach, but the athletic director is not
- 54:35Speaker 2: the AD anymore. Michael Offord was fired today. School president
- 54:39Speaker 2: Richard McCullough announced. So the senior associate athletics director, Director
- 54:46Speaker 2: Bruce Warwick has been promoted to or appointed to the
- 54:49Speaker 2: interim AD role there.
- 54:51Speaker 3: Quite the memorable final football game for Alford there.
- 54:54Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, there with the power outage and all of
- 54:57Speaker 2: that other kind of stuff. College game day this week,
- 55:01Speaker 2: in case you weren't, it was going to be in Oxford, Mississippi.
- 55:03Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 55:04Speaker 5: We could have all guessed that. I wonder why. Yeah.
- 55:08Speaker 2: LSU is playing there. Lane Kiffin's kind of downplaying it
- 55:12Speaker 2: all right now. But Jeff Landry, the governor of Louisiana,
- 55:17Speaker 2: says he knows what kind of atmosphere is going to
- 55:19Speaker 2: be waiting for them. Quote, I'm thinking about talking about Kiffin.
- 55:24Speaker 2: I'm thinking about having to send him in on an
- 55:27Speaker 2: F-16 and maybe the team on a C-130. Security is
- 55:30Speaker 2: going to be really tight. You know, we might need
- 55:33Speaker 2: the National Guard out there to protect our team. I
- 55:35Speaker 2: think it's going to be an interesting weekend. So he
- 55:39Speaker 2: was joking, of course, but by the same token, I
- 55:42Speaker 2: think folks are expecting it to be a less than
- 55:45Speaker 2: hospitable environment for Lane Kiffin when he goes in there.
- 55:49Speaker 6: Oh, boy.
- 55:50Speaker 5: Yeah. And then Greg Sankey.
- 55:54Speaker 2: Has said expansion definitely while it's possible.
- 55:58Speaker 5: It's not a foregone.
- 55:59Speaker 2: Conclusion because, you know, we've been talking about this once
- 56:02Speaker 2: the The college football playoff committee opened that 30-day exclusive
- 56:09Speaker 2: negotiating window for ESPN, meaning they have 30 days since
- 56:13Speaker 2: they are the primary, they're the exclusive rights holder, to
- 56:16Speaker 2: be able to work a new contract in the event
- 56:21Speaker 2: that the playoff does expand to 24 teams, then by
- 56:26Speaker 2: next year that ESPN would have their plan in place
- 56:29Speaker 2: if they so choose. That's what I think most folks
- 56:32Speaker 2: thinking is the other shoe dropping there by the CFP
- 56:37Speaker 2: allowing ESPN to have that exclusive 30-day negotiation window open up. However,
- 56:45Speaker 2: Greg Sankey said today, quote, we participated in that conversation.
- 56:50Speaker 2: That doesn't mean expansion will happen. There's a media negotiation opportunity.
- 56:56Speaker 2: which is an important piece of information. And then we'll
- 56:58Speaker 2: have an opportunity, it would appear, later in the fall
- 57:01Speaker 2: to make a decision about the future form. And some
- 57:06Speaker 2: of the questions he's had about expansion, he said he
- 57:09Speaker 2: was speaking to a Monday morning quarterback club in Birmingham. Boy,
- 57:12Speaker 2: that had to be boilerplate. But anyway, there's some other
- 57:17Speaker 2: questions still lingering. He said, and we've identified those that
- 57:20Speaker 2: are central to our decisions. He had said that the
- 57:24Speaker 2: conference stakeholders met in Birmingham last month to talk about
- 57:26Speaker 2: strategic issues, including the playoff and the overall postseason. And
- 57:30Speaker 2: those discussions, he said, produced our participation in this decision
- 57:36Speaker 2: to go to the marketplace.
- 57:37Speaker 5: Meaning to open up the negotiating window. He said, quote,
- 57:40Speaker 5: and then we.
- 57:41Speaker 2: Refine issues around schedule, issues around what might be the economics,
- 57:47Speaker 2: issues around the regular season and having discussions.
- 57:49Speaker 5: Common expectations.
- 57:51Speaker 3: Bargaining chips.
- 57:52Speaker 2: Yeah, he wants more of the standardized scheduling with the
- 57:55Speaker 2: 10 power four opponents.
- 57:57Speaker 9: Wants to tell Indiana, hey, you go to, I mean,
- 58:00Speaker 9: you don't have to schedule Texas, but, you know, at
- 58:02Speaker 9: least go to Tucson, maybe?
- 58:04Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, right.
- 58:06Speaker 2: You know, and so, I mean, so far they've fought
- 58:08Speaker 2: North Texas, which is a G6, and then Howard, which
- 58:11Speaker 2: is an FCS. So, he's saying, you know, all, and
- 58:16Speaker 2: not just picking on Indiana, but all programs, whether it
- 58:19Speaker 2: be the Big Ten, the SEC, or whatever, that you've
- 58:20Speaker 2: got to play at least one powerful opponent. to go
- 58:26Speaker 2: with your nine conference opponents. Ten of your 12 games
- 58:29Speaker 2: have to be against P4s.
- 58:31Speaker 9: And that brings up the level of certain schedules like
- 58:35Speaker 9: a Miami who happens to play the bottom half of
- 58:37Speaker 9: the ACC this year.
- 58:39Speaker 5: Well, and that's just the way that rotated. Right. That
- 58:42Speaker 5: can't be held against them.
- 58:43Speaker 9: But that's going to happen to every team at some point,
- 58:45Speaker 9: and so the P4 addition helps with that.
- 58:47Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, it does.
- 58:48Speaker 2: All right, we'll be back to wrap up our number
- 58:50Speaker 2: two on 13 Under the Zone. It's right in there.
- 58:53Speaker 2: There it is.

- 1:00:10Speaker 1: And your home for the hordes.
- 1:00:12Speaker 7: Guaranteed human.
- 1:00:20Speaker 8: It's the Craig Way Show with the voice of the
- 1:00:23Speaker 8: Texas Longhorns and Hall of Fame broadcaster, Craig Way.
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: From Daryl K.
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: Royal, Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, it's the fourth-ranked Texas
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: Log Warns hosting the top-ranked team in the nation, the
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: Ohio State Buckeyes. Jacoby Jackson, the running back, saying to
- 1:00:52Speaker 2: take the snap from under center. On fourth down and
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: two at the Texas 13. Sand under center. Pass the snap.
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: It's a handoff. Jacoby Jackson downing forward.
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: He did not get it.
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: The Longhorns gang tackle him and come up with easily
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: their most important play of the evening. Kiro Kanu and
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: Jelani McDonald team up on the tackle. It'll go over
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: on downs to Texas. Just a gain of a yard.
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: Good snap and hold from the right hash. Kick is
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: on the way, and the kick is good. Longhorns are
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: on the board.
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: They wanted more.
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: They settled for three. Ball on the right hash for
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: the Longhorn, fortunately.
- 1:01:32Speaker 5: Julian saying out of the gun.
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: Pass the snap. Back to throw. Pressure coming. Colin Simmons
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: has it. Down he goes. A big sack by.
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: Simmons to run him down, and it brings up third down.
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: So it's fourth down and eight for Texas from the
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: Longhorn 42-yard line with 2.21 to go in the third quarter.
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: Texas trailing 23-3. Off the left pass. Manning out of
- 1:01:54Speaker 2: the shotgun. Has the step on fourth.
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: Down and eight. Look, pressure coming. Manning rolls to the right.
- 1:02:00Speaker 7: Goes ball caught.
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: Amari wins the first down across midfield and to the
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: 49-yard line.
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: Of Ohio State, it's a nine-yard catch and a move
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: of the chain.
- 1:02:11Speaker 4: Boy, that's a tough throw by Arch on the run.
- 1:02:14Speaker 5: He kind of went.
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: Over across his body.
- 1:02:16Speaker 4: Then Winston still had to get about five yards.
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: Out of the gun, off the right hash, out of
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: the pistol set. Now Smothers ships.
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: Arch. Shotgun snap. Play action. Throws to the end zone.
- 1:02:26Speaker 6: Caught. Touchdown, Texas.
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: Ryan Wingo.
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: Turn inside of the coverage of Devin Sanchez. And the
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: Longhorns have their first touchdown of the ballgame. Fourth down
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: and six from the Texas 32. Smeller chips around to
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: the right side of Manny.
- 1:02:41Speaker 5: Arch from the shotgun. Pass the snap.
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: Back to throw.
- 1:02:44Speaker 5: Over the middle.
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: The ball's caught by Mosley.
- 1:02:47Speaker 5: First down.
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: Kip spun around and still pulled.
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: It down for a gain of 13. March hung in there.
- 1:02:53Speaker 4: He got hit, and Hollywood Smothers blitz protection doing a
- 1:02:57Speaker 4: great job. Ohio State did bring extra pressure.
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: Lineup in the pistol with Amari Winston lined up as
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: a blocking back on second and goal.
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: Hand off. Smothers left side. Touchdown, Texas.
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: Hollywood Smothers in for the score, and here come the
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: Loghorns back to a one-score game with just under half
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: of the final quarter remaining. Hawkins Two for two tonight.
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: This will be a 45-yarder from the left half. He
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: tried to put Ohio State up by nine points. Good
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: snap and hold, and the kick on the way, and
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: the kick is no good.
- 1:03:31Speaker 6: He pulled.
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: It left.
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: It's no good.
- 1:03:39Speaker 4: Timing was thrown a little bit off by the snap.
- 1:03:43Speaker 4: Texas has a chance here with 4.16 to go.
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: Holly Brown remains the running back, offset to the left
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: side of Manning. Shotgun snap to Arch on second down,
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: sends it across the middle, ball caught by Mosley across
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: the 45 and.
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: A first down.
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: Manning out of the pistol, has the snap, turns, hands it,
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: smothers inside the 30 and he has a first down.
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: On second down, now Brown shifts to the right side
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: of Manning.
- 1:04:06Speaker 5: Arch from the shotgun, Manning.
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: With the snap, turns, play action, throws over the middle,
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: ball caught, Mosley inside the 10 to the 5, and down.
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: To the 1-yard line. 19 yards on it.
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: Little for the moment save the touchdown. It'll be first
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: and goal Texas at the Ohio State one yard line.
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: Manning under center to take the snap. Third and goal.
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: Hand off. Diving for the goal line.
- 1:04:31Speaker 3: Hollywood smothers.
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: Touchdown Texas. Smothers over the top.
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: And the Longhorns are an extra point away from taking
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: their first lead of the night with 25 seconds remaining
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: in the game. Now here comes a pretty important extra point.
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: For Gianni Spenic. Trying to give Texas its first lead
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: of the night. Out of the hole to Max Chimeno.
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: The snap from Trey DeBuck to give Texas the lead.
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: Good snap and hold. The extra point kick is up.
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: It's good. 25 seconds to go.
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: It's Texas 24, Ohio State 23. First and 20 with
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: 17 seconds to go. The ball is back at the
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: 15-yard line. shotgun snap to sand swings it across the
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: middle balls caught longboards are going to make the tackle
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: inbounds of the 20-yard line but block is going to
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: continue to move down the seven down the six down
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: the five to four to three to two shotgun snap
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: to sand got the throw flings it up downfield the
- 1:05:37Speaker 2: pass is knocked away and in fact intercepted by Grayson
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: Littleton what a way to end it How about this
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: Texas Longhorn team? They come back 20 points.
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: Down in the fourth quarter to beat the top-ranked Ohio
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: State Buckeyes.
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: Final score, the Texas Longhorns 24, the Ohio State Buckeyes 23.
- 1:06:19Speaker 8: It's the Craig Way Show with the voice of the
- 1:06:22Speaker 8: Texas Longhorns and Hall of Fame broadcaster, Craig Way.
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: Heck of a ball game, heck of a finish there
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: as the Texas Longhorns rally back to beat the Ohio
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: State Buckeyes on Saturday night at DKR Texas Memorial Stadium, 24-23.
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: The final after trailing 23-3 going into the fourth quarter.
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: Craig Way alongside the producer, Jay Kerman, who expertly crafted
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: that speech.
- 1:06:49Speaker 5: Game montage for us.
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: And we're going to hear some more from Longhorn's head coach,
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: Steve Sarkeesian, coming up in a few minutes from the
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: weekly press conference. This is, after all, Longhorn's Monday. And
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: we hear from the head coach on Monday. We get
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: his thoughts on that. So we're going to do that
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: as we recap. But we're also recapping week number one
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: in the NFL.
- 1:07:11Speaker 5: Okay.
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: So your biggest takeaway is from week number one, which
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: won't be completely done until tonight. Broncos and Chiefs play tonight.
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: I should point that out. Manning cast night. You got
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: that tonight.
- 1:07:25Speaker 9: Yeah, that'll be a welcome new addition to the football rotation.
- 1:07:30Speaker 5: I wonder if they're going to get Arch on at
- 1:07:32Speaker 5: some point this year.
- 1:07:33Speaker 6: Oh, I'd like that.
- 1:07:34Speaker 5: Especially if things go well. I wonder. Interesting.
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: It'll be interesting to see if that's the case. Anyway,
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: your biggest takeaway is, overall from this first weekend of
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: playing the NFL?
- 1:07:47Speaker 9: Well, don't overreact is always what I try to tell
- 1:07:50Speaker 9: myself after week one. But my biggest takeaway is this
- 1:07:54Speaker 9: is still the NFL and the bottom teams are not
- 1:07:57Speaker 9: as bad as we thought they would be.
- 1:07:59Speaker 5: Except for the Cleveland Browns.
- 1:08:00Speaker 9: Well, they're a different story entirely. They might be in
- 1:08:04Speaker 9: a different class of bottom teams. But Arizona goes and
- 1:08:08Speaker 9: gets a win against the Los Angeles Chargers, as much
- 1:08:10Speaker 9: of a home game as the Chargers ever have, and
- 1:08:12Speaker 9: so FI Stadium.
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: By the way, I joined a survivor pool. Who do
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: you think I picked the first week?
- 1:08:19Speaker 3: The Chargers. So I'm done. That's why I stopped. Two
- 1:08:22Speaker 3: years in a row, I lost week one. That's why
- 1:08:24Speaker 3: I stopped.
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: I thought if there's one week that I could go
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: and feel pretty comfortable, maybe that one.
- 1:08:29Speaker 9: Nope.
- 1:08:30Speaker 5: I'm done.
- 1:08:31Speaker 9: My friend that plays every year took the Jags, so
- 1:08:33Speaker 9: he was with you on the Browns. But the Jets,
- 1:08:35Speaker 9: I know they're playing the Titans, who might be in
- 1:08:37Speaker 9: another lower tier, another lower rung, but they looked okay.
- 1:08:42Speaker 9: The Falcons kept it close with the Steelers. Minnesota impressed
- 1:08:45Speaker 9: me a lot, Craig.
- 1:08:47Speaker 5: Yeah, and what?
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: They were down, what, double digits or at least two
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: scores to the Packers and turned that game around?
- 1:08:52Speaker 9: Turned that game around. The Giants beat the Cowboys, which
- 1:08:55Speaker 9: I wasn't expecting. And they did that without Kyler Murray.
- 1:08:57Speaker 9: They did that without Kyler Murray, which.
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: Maybe that's why they were able to turn it around,
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: because they didn't have Kyler Murray out there.
- 1:09:03Speaker 9: Wentz certainly, I'll say, greased the wheels on that offense
- 1:09:06Speaker 9: when he came in there. But my takeaway is... To
- 1:09:11Speaker 9: expect the unexpected. But I try not to have any
- 1:09:13Speaker 9: huge takeaways from week one. I just, I really do.
- 1:09:16Speaker 9: I try to step back, let it play out. The
- 1:09:19Speaker 9: Saints impressed me, keeping it close with Detroit. I was
- 1:09:23Speaker 9: impressed by teams that I wasn't expecting to be.
- 1:09:26Speaker 5: Okay. That makes sense. I think the Saints would be.
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: One of the teams I expected to be impressed by
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: and was, was the Bears. Oh, yeah. And I've got
- 1:09:36Speaker 2: to do some more digging on this. Because I never
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: saw the answer to it. I know the 59 points
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: were the most the Bears had scored in a game
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: since 1980. But it's also the second most points scored
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: in an NFL season opener.
- 1:09:55Speaker 5: All time. I don't know who was number one.
- 1:09:59Speaker 2: I didn't have time to do the research and find
- 1:10:02Speaker 2: out who did it.
- 1:10:03Speaker 5: When it could have been.
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: I know the 1950 Los Angeles Rams put up some crazy,
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: ridiculous numbers when they first took in the teams from
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: the All-American Football Conference. They had 70 in one game.
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: They had 65 in another game. Maybe it was one
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: of those. I don't know.
- 1:10:21Speaker 5: But the 59 was pretty impressive by what the Bears did.
- 1:10:24Speaker 3: I'll tell you one thing.
- 1:10:26Speaker 9: Yeah, 62 points from the Atlanta Falcons against the Saints
- 1:10:29Speaker 9: in 1973.
- 1:10:29Speaker 5: Okay.
- 1:10:30Speaker 3: Saints were.
- 1:10:33Speaker 5: Really bad. So there it is. There's your most in
- 1:10:35Speaker 5: a season opener.
- 1:10:36Speaker 9: The one takeaway, I'm trying not to overreact to this
- 1:10:40Speaker 9: Panther performance, but I actually think pretty highly of what
- 1:10:43Speaker 9: the Bears have coming back defensively.
- 1:10:44Speaker 7: Sure.
- 1:10:45Speaker 3: Coming into the year. And I thought Bryce Young was awesome.
- 1:10:49Speaker 5: Yeah, he played really well.
- 1:10:51Speaker 3: Obviously, Caleb Williams and the Bears stole the show.
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: Yep.
- 1:10:55Speaker 5: Absolutely.
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: And as a Rams fan, you know, hearing the news
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: about Miles Garrett, on the one hand, you kind of go, oh, yeah, okay, well,
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: now it kind of makes sense. I thought, why is
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: he not getting, you know, getting to Brock Purdy? Why
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: is he not getting off of those blocks? This isn't
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: the model. Well, now we know why. It was a
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: knee injury that they've been trying to, you know, keep
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: on the down low, hope he could play through. Now
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: he has to have surgery, and he's out for four
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: to six weeks. I'm a little concerned about two teams. Yeah.
- 1:11:20Speaker 9: New England, because I know the schedule that's ahead, and
- 1:11:22Speaker 9: now they're going to be without A.J. Brown for four
- 1:11:24Speaker 9: weeks or more.
- 1:11:26Speaker 5: Green Bay.
- 1:11:27Speaker 9: To start the season like that, their worst collapse since
- 1:11:32Speaker 9: the way last season ended.
- 1:11:34Speaker 2: Yeah, and you know, neither of us picked the Packers
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: to be in the playoffs. And I don't think either
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: of us picked the Vikings either. But we both have
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: both the Bears and Lions in.
- 1:11:44Speaker 9: And.
- 1:11:45Speaker 5: And both of those teams won.
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: But the Vikings might have been, their result might have
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: been the most surprising, I think. Other than the Cardinals
- 1:11:51Speaker 2: over the Chargers, probably.
- 1:11:53Speaker 9: And the Cowboys, I think losing was surprising. I picked
- 1:11:56Speaker 9: them to win the division. I don't feel great about that,
- 1:11:58Speaker 9: watching week one. But I don't think the way they
- 1:12:01Speaker 9: lost was surprising. If there was a way they were
- 1:12:03Speaker 9: going to lose that game, it would be the Giants
- 1:12:07Speaker 9: giving them, like I said earlier, death by a thousand
- 1:12:09Speaker 9: cuts on third down.
- 1:12:11Speaker 5: 28-20 was the final. Let's hear some more from the Cowboys.
- 1:12:13Speaker 5: Brian Schottenheimer.
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: Was asked about, you know, how difficult is it to
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: try to win a football game when you have such
- 1:12:18Speaker 2: few possessions in the contest?
- 1:12:21Speaker 14: You know, we needed to be better on offense in
- 1:12:22Speaker 14: the first half, Todd. I thought, you know, again, they
- 1:12:24Speaker 14: pushed us around a little bit up front. You know,
- 1:12:26Speaker 14: their defensive line, our running game, there's way too much
- 1:12:28Speaker 14: penetration early in the game. Javante was running into frickin',
- 1:12:32Speaker 14: you know, a wall, you know, in the beginning of
- 1:12:35Speaker 14: the game. And we made some good adjustments at halftime,
- 1:12:38Speaker 14: but it's a team game. I said to the guys,
- 1:12:40Speaker 14: you know, we win together, we lose together.
- 1:12:42Speaker 5: Disappointed. We're going to get back to work, but that's
- 1:12:45Speaker 5: certainly not our standard.
- 1:12:47Speaker 14: It's not what we expected to do tonight, but it's
- 1:12:51Speaker 14: what happened.
- 1:12:51Speaker 5: And so.
- 1:12:53Speaker 14: We'll take the pain that goes with it, and we're
- 1:12:57Speaker 14: going to start immediately working to.
- 1:12:58Speaker 5: Get it better. Okay. All right.
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: Next, I laugh when I first saw this line. Have
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: you been around a more disappointing opening night? And I
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: haven't even heard the sound bite yet. But all I
- 1:13:09Speaker 2: could think about was he was the offensive coordinator for
- 1:13:13Speaker 2: for a Jeff Fisher coached St. Louis Rams team that
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: went 2-14 one year.
- 1:13:19Speaker 9: Is that the year Zach Stacey took over as running back?
- 1:13:23Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:13:23Speaker 9: I watched far too much of that team because it
- 1:13:25Speaker 9: was one of my first years playing fantasy football.
- 1:13:28Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: They were brutal. A couple of years he was the
- 1:13:31Speaker 2: offensive coordinator. And so that's why I chuckled.
- 1:13:34Speaker 3: Sam Bradford team?
- 1:13:35Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:13:36Speaker 2: That's why I chuckled when he was asked, you know,
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: have you been around a more disappointing opening night?
- 1:13:42Speaker 5: I've been around a long time. So maybe.
- 1:13:45Speaker 14: But right now this one feels pretty bad. Just because
- 1:13:48Speaker 14: of the other day again. You know, we just didn't
- 1:13:50Speaker 14: perform the way we're capable of playing. You know, we
- 1:13:52Speaker 14: didn't play defense the way we're capable of playing. We
- 1:13:54Speaker 14: didn't play offense in the first half the way we're
- 1:13:55Speaker 14: capable of playing. You know, we dropped the ball. You know,
- 1:13:59Speaker 14: one positive thing I think we did, we did take
- 1:14:01Speaker 14: some great shots on the ball, Todd. You know, but
- 1:14:03Speaker 14: the ball just didn't bounce our way. Caleb had an awesome,
- 1:14:05Speaker 14: you know, strip sack fumble and goes right to their guy. And,
- 1:14:09Speaker 14: you know, we strip a ball, a scatter bone, it
- 1:14:11Speaker 14: bounces right back to him. That was one of the
- 1:14:13Speaker 14: few positives that we did. But, you know, we're not
- 1:14:17Speaker 14: going to panic. You know, this is a long season,
- 1:14:19Speaker 14: and we know we're not going to go undefeated.
- 1:14:21Speaker 5: That's real. But that's not the biggest issue we have.
- 1:14:24Speaker 5: The biggest issue, we have to coach and play better.
- 1:14:27Speaker 5: Cam Scadaboo, by the way, did look good. He played well.
- 1:14:30Speaker 2: And then finally, the question everybody was probably pondering, musing,
- 1:14:34Speaker 2: and drawing their own conclusions, is this carryover from the
- 1:14:39Speaker 2: struggles that his defense had last season?
- 1:14:42Speaker 14: Every day we went against him in practice, you know,
- 1:14:46Speaker 14: The defense that we saw in practice was not what
- 1:14:48Speaker 14: we saw tonight. But the offense wasn't the offense that
- 1:14:51Speaker 14: we saw in practice. We just didn't perform very well.
- 1:14:53Speaker 14: And that starts with me as the head coach. Then
- 1:14:55Speaker 14: it goes to our coaches, but our players. We went
- 1:14:58Speaker 14: into the game this morning in the team meeting. We
- 1:15:00Speaker 14: talked about discipline. Obviously, we have nine penalties, I think,
- 1:15:05Speaker 14: including one of our most dependable players getting an unsportsmanlike conduct.
- 1:15:09Speaker 14: And we're getting ready to try to go in for
- 1:15:10Speaker 14: two and make it a one-score game. We're going for
- 1:15:12Speaker 14: the win. That's not like Javante. We talked about owning
- 1:15:15Speaker 14: the line of scrimmage. We didn't do that. They ran
- 1:15:19Speaker 14: the ball really well against us. They were the more
- 1:15:21Speaker 14: physical football team. We did not run the ball very well.
- 1:15:24Speaker 14: So there's certainly not a lot of positives. But, again,
- 1:15:28Speaker 14: I'm not going to push the panic button. I know
- 1:15:30Speaker 14: we're better than that. I know the type of men
- 1:15:32Speaker 14: that we have in that room, and they will respond.
- 1:15:35Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: From Dak Prescott, he was asked for his disappointment level.
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: How disappointing was it for him and for his team
- 1:15:41Speaker 2: to play like this?
- 1:15:42Speaker 5: It sucks to lose.
- 1:15:43Speaker 10: Damn sure sucks to lose the first one to this team,
- 1:15:46Speaker 10: a division game, but still optimistic. That doesn't change our goals,
- 1:15:50Speaker 10: doesn't change how we feel about our team. As I said,
- 1:15:53Speaker 10: credit to those guys. They beat us tonight. This is
- 1:15:56Speaker 10: a marathon, though. It's a long season, and we're going
- 1:15:59Speaker 10: to respond. We've got great leaders and I feel confident
- 1:16:03Speaker 10: in just even the message and the feel in the
- 1:16:05Speaker 10: locker room after that.
- 1:16:06Speaker 5: Yeah, guys are pissed off.
- 1:16:09Speaker 10: Nobody's more disappointed than the players in that locker room
- 1:16:12Speaker 10: and the coaches and everybody that put this game plan
- 1:16:14Speaker 10: together and attempted to go out there and execute it and.
- 1:16:16Speaker 5: Failed to do so.
- 1:16:17Speaker 10: And as I said, credit to those guys.
- 1:16:20Speaker 5: They'll have to see us again.
- 1:16:21Speaker 10: And we've got to turn the page and got another
- 1:16:23Speaker 10: division game next week at home.
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: Back to that possession time question and the frustrations of
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: getting so few possessions in the second half.
- 1:16:30Speaker 5: It's frustrating.
- 1:16:31Speaker 10: As I said, they controlled the possessions definitely there in
- 1:16:34Speaker 10: the second half. I mean, limit us to a possession
- 1:16:36Speaker 10: a quarter. And we scored on our two possessions, but
- 1:16:40Speaker 10: it wasn't enough. We put ourselves behind the ball in
- 1:16:44Speaker 10: the first half. That turnover, like I said, I don't
- 1:16:46Speaker 10: know if you're in here, that hurt it.
- 1:16:48Speaker 5: That changed.
- 1:16:49Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:16:50Speaker 10: We get a turnover pretty much right there in the
- 1:16:51Speaker 10: red zone.
- 1:16:53Speaker 5: We're working.
- 1:16:53Speaker 2: Yeah, sure.
- 1:16:54Speaker 10: It would have been a throwaway way to put the ball, but,
- 1:16:55Speaker 10: you know, pin them back and then they probably wouldn't
- 1:16:57Speaker 10: get points that half. They go down, they score, they
- 1:17:00Speaker 10: get the ball to start the half again and score again.
- 1:17:02Speaker 5: And we couldn't recover. Yeah, that was big.
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: So as a team leader and a veteran, how does
- 1:17:07Speaker 2: he tell some of the younger players?
- 1:17:12Speaker 5: The way that we approach things.
- 1:17:14Speaker 10: I know that our routine, I know that our standard,
- 1:17:16Speaker 10: I know that the way that we practice is the
- 1:17:18Speaker 10: right way. So my message is echo and don't change,
- 1:17:20Speaker 10: don't flinch, don't blink.
- 1:17:24Speaker 5: This is a long year. We have to stick together.
- 1:17:27Speaker 10: We're hanging our hat on our brotherhood, and that's who
- 1:17:29Speaker 10: we believe that we are. So there's no better time
- 1:17:31Speaker 10: to show it than after a loss. A little bit
- 1:17:33Speaker 10: of adversity. We've got to make sure we use it
- 1:17:34Speaker 10: as a lesson.
- 1:17:35Speaker 5: Humble us.
- 1:17:36Speaker 10: I'm sure you guys are going to write whatever, you know,
- 1:17:38Speaker 10: deservingly about this game. And, you know, we've got to
- 1:17:41Speaker 10: make sure that we put the blinders on and focus
- 1:17:43Speaker 10: on what we can control. And that's preparing for another
- 1:17:46Speaker 10: division game.
- 1:17:47Speaker 5: Next Sunday. All right.
- 1:17:49Speaker 2: We'll hear from D'Amico Rines and C.J.
- 1:17:52Speaker 5: Stroud a little later on this hour.
- 1:17:54Speaker 2: But up next, back to more from Longhorns head coach
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: Steve Sarkeesian when we continue on 13 Under the Zone.
- 1:18:02Speaker 2: Hard to beat down if you're a Longhorn fan coming
- 1:18:04Speaker 2: off that win. Which could be like the texter who's
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: going to nitpick the 97 total yards in the first
- 1:18:11Speaker 2: half but said nothing about the 230 yards in the
- 1:18:14Speaker 2: fourth quarter on the three drives totaling 40 plays in
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: 17 minutes.
- 1:18:17Speaker 9: Hey, but you're a more is more guy, right?
- 1:18:20Speaker 3: We welcome it all.
- 1:18:21Speaker 5: Yeah, that's right.
- 1:18:21Speaker 2: That's why I say anyone is welcome to text the program.
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: Text the word Texas followed by your question or comment
- 1:18:31Speaker 2: to 81530. Standard messaging and data rates. You said somebody
- 1:18:35Speaker 2: else texted us.
- 1:18:36Speaker 5: Elsewhere?
- 1:18:36Speaker 9: Yeah, via YouTube, where you can join our show via
- 1:18:39Speaker 9: the comments section. We've got Dean commenting in. Guys, just
- 1:18:44Speaker 9: face it. Dak is a Warren Moon clone. Put up
- 1:18:48Speaker 9: all the trash yards. after the game is already out
- 1:18:51Speaker 9: of reach. He just can't make it work.
- 1:18:54Speaker 5: Warren Moon's in the Hall of Fame, isn't he? Is
- 1:18:57Speaker 5: he in the Pro Football Hall of Fame?
- 1:18:59Speaker 3: I can confirm that.
- 1:19:00Speaker 9: I know Dak is, I don't know if he's on
- 1:19:03Speaker 9: a Hall of Fame trajectory yet.
- 1:19:05Speaker 5: And I'm not saying that.
- 1:19:06Speaker 2: Right. I'm just saying the comparison. Are you comparing him
- 1:19:09Speaker 2: with a guy who's in the Pro Football Hall of Fame?
- 1:19:12Speaker 5: That's my question, if he's in there. I was thinking
- 1:19:14Speaker 5: he was in there.
- 1:19:16Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:19:17Speaker 5: That's what I thought.
- 1:19:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:19:20Speaker 2: He's been in for 20 years. So you're comparing him
- 1:19:23Speaker 2: to a Pro Football Hall of Famer. And yes, he
- 1:19:26Speaker 2: never won a Super Bowl. He did win five great cups,
- 1:19:32Speaker 2: you know, in succession.
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: The Eskimos.
- 1:19:34Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 1:19:35Speaker 5: Yeah, absolutely. They're called something different now.
- 1:19:39Speaker 3: Yeah, wait, what's the city?
- 1:19:41Speaker 6: Edmonton.
- 1:19:41Speaker 5: Okay, Edmonton, yeah. They're the Elks now.
- 1:19:44Speaker 3: I was trying to remember what they were called now.
- 1:19:46Speaker 5: Yeah. Okay.
- 1:19:48Speaker 2: Let's go back to hearing from Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkis.
- 1:19:51Speaker 2: He was asked if it was easier to coach... his
- 1:19:55Speaker 2: team up harder in the second half? Or is it
- 1:20:00Speaker 2: also easier to coach them more with more stringency, you
- 1:20:04Speaker 2: might say, this week, given the way the first half
- 1:20:07Speaker 2: of the game went on Saturday?
- 1:20:09Speaker 7: I think with our.
- 1:20:09Speaker 11: Guys, and you can ask them when they come, you know,
- 1:20:12Speaker 11: I think that that's a great question for them. I'm
- 1:20:14Speaker 11: always really honest with our team. And whether it's an
- 1:20:18Speaker 11: individual player or collectively as a group, whether it's offense, defense,
- 1:20:22Speaker 11: and or the entire team, And so, you know, when
- 1:20:26Speaker 11: I come in Monday morning and I talk about how
- 1:20:28Speaker 11: we played in the game and I talk about, you know,
- 1:20:31Speaker 11: and I show the good, bad, and ugly tape, and
- 1:20:33Speaker 11: then I talk about areas where I know we need
- 1:20:35Speaker 11: to improve moving forward, I'm very honest. And so I
- 1:20:39Speaker 11: got on the offense's butt this morning about the ball.
- 1:20:41Speaker 11: Like our ball security is not good enough. Not to
- 1:20:45Speaker 11: be a championship team, our third down defense right now
- 1:20:48Speaker 11: is not good enough. Not to be a championship team.
- 1:20:51Speaker 11: And that's not to diminish the wind. That's to show
- 1:20:54Speaker 11: them how we can continue to improve and where there's
- 1:20:57Speaker 11: area for improvement. We're not a finished product yet. We're
- 1:21:00Speaker 11: two games in. I showed them the Kobe clip this morning.
- 1:21:04Speaker 11: Job's not finished. You know, I mean, we're two games
- 1:21:07Speaker 11: into a season and we got a lot more football
- 1:21:09Speaker 11: left to go play. And so we can't just sit
- 1:21:11Speaker 11: back and have a sigh of relief. We got to
- 1:21:14Speaker 11: we got to stay to the grind. We got to
- 1:21:15Speaker 11: continue to push forward.
- 1:21:16Speaker 7: And so.
- 1:21:18Speaker 11: If we would have played an A-plus game, I would
- 1:21:21Speaker 11: have told them they played an A-plus game.
- 1:21:22Speaker 7: But we didn't.
- 1:21:23Speaker 11: And there was areas for us to improve upon coming
- 1:21:26Speaker 11: to that ballgame Saturday night.
- 1:21:28Speaker 5: Plain and simple.
- 1:21:30Speaker 2: With regard coming off of that, he was asked about
- 1:21:34Speaker 2: the second half performance of Arch Manning, what Arch did
- 1:21:37Speaker 2: to turn things around in the second half.
- 1:21:38Speaker 11: One thing for a quarterback, I thought Arch came into
- 1:21:42Speaker 11: the game like ready to go. Like this guy was
- 1:21:45Speaker 11: dialed into the game plan. I thought, you know, I
- 1:21:48Speaker 11: always try to watch him in pregame a little bit.
- 1:21:50Speaker 11: I mean, he was throwing darts. I mean, this guy
- 1:21:52Speaker 11: was ready to go. And He did, you know, and
- 1:21:55Speaker 11: that's the hard part for a quarterback. But what can
- 1:21:57Speaker 11: happen to you from a psyche standpoint, guys don't catch
- 1:22:01Speaker 11: a couple balls. You can start chasing ghosts a little bit,
- 1:22:04Speaker 11: like thinking, man, I got to throw this even more perfect.
- 1:22:07Speaker 7: He didn't.
- 1:22:08Speaker 11: But I felt like he was starting to go there.
- 1:22:10Speaker 11: And again, I credit Coach Bamonte, Coach Millwee for getting
- 1:22:13Speaker 11: him back. And I thought the way he competed in
- 1:22:18Speaker 11: the second half was served as a great motivator for
- 1:22:22Speaker 11: the rest of the guys. I mean, he was willing
- 1:22:24Speaker 11: to put his body on the line. A couple of
- 1:22:26Speaker 11: those scrambles on the sidelines, I probably would have liked
- 1:22:28Speaker 11: him to step out of bounds, but he took a
- 1:22:30Speaker 11: couple hits, his arms bleeding. But at the end of
- 1:22:34Speaker 11: the day, That's what was required in that moment. And
- 1:22:38Speaker 11: our guys needed that leadership. And if he was just
- 1:22:41Speaker 11: kind of in a little bit of a shell, that
- 1:22:43Speaker 11: might not have been good for us. But I think
- 1:22:45Speaker 11: that that snaps a Cam Coleman or Ryan Wingo out
- 1:22:48Speaker 11: of maybe a little bit of their funk because they
- 1:22:50Speaker 11: didn't make the plays they wanted to make. I think
- 1:22:52Speaker 11: that inspires an offensive line that inspires Hollywood smothers.
- 1:22:55Speaker 7: You know, that that fourth and sixth.
- 1:22:57Speaker 11: Hollywood Smothers steps into the A-gap and takes on a
- 1:23:00Speaker 11: blitzer to give Arch a clean pocket to throw that
- 1:23:02Speaker 11: ball to Emmitt Mosley. So there's a lot of moving
- 1:23:04Speaker 11: parts that take place, but I think his demeanor, his approach,
- 1:23:09Speaker 11: his ability to make plays at critical moments of that
- 1:23:12Speaker 11: game were huge for us. I mean, the touchdown pass
- 1:23:15Speaker 11: to Wingo, he can't make a better throw. That was
- 1:23:18Speaker 11: about as good as it gets. And that started kind
- 1:23:20Speaker 11: of the comeback. And so all in all, I was
- 1:23:22Speaker 11: really proud of him. It could have been a whole
- 1:23:24Speaker 11: different day from a number standpoint. If we make a
- 1:23:26Speaker 11: couple plays for him, we didn't. He didn't panic. He
- 1:23:29Speaker 11: stayed the course. And, you know, he leads, you know,
- 1:23:32Speaker 11: those three drives at the end of the game to
- 1:23:34Speaker 11: go win a game against that quality of opponent. I
- 1:23:37Speaker 11: think that serves us well.
- 1:23:38Speaker 5: For our future. All right.
- 1:23:39Speaker 2: He was also asked the things that he learned about
- 1:23:41Speaker 2: his defense, especially given what they did in the second half.
- 1:23:44Speaker 11: Defensively, Ian Griffard is a guy who we're really excited about.
- 1:23:48Speaker 7: I think that he is a.
- 1:23:50Speaker 11: he has really stepped into like becoming the dominant player
- 1:23:54Speaker 11: that we were hopeful he could be. I thought Alex
- 1:23:56Speaker 11: January had a really good game the other night is
- 1:23:59Speaker 11: stepping up into the player that, that we felt like
- 1:24:01Speaker 11: he could be.
- 1:24:01Speaker 7: Um, and so those things were very encouraging.
- 1:24:04Speaker 11: I think Grayson Littleton is obviously living up to the
- 1:24:06Speaker 11: billing of playing the way that we thought he could play.
- 1:24:09Speaker 11: I thought the second half Bo Masco we got was
- 1:24:12Speaker 11: the guy that, that we were expecting to get. I
- 1:24:14Speaker 11: don't think he had a great first half. I thought
- 1:24:16Speaker 11: he had a much better second half. Um, I thought
- 1:24:19Speaker 11: Ohio State, to their credit, did a lot. They taxed
- 1:24:22Speaker 11: us mentally with some formations, motion shifts, alignments that caused
- 1:24:27Speaker 11: a lot of communication. And I didn't think our.
- 1:24:29Speaker 7: Communication was as good as it could have been. I
- 1:24:32Speaker 7: thought we got better in the second half.
- 1:24:34Speaker 11: But I think we're better defensively right now when we're
- 1:24:37Speaker 11: in your face, you know, when we're aggressive. And Um, we,
- 1:24:40Speaker 11: we tried to play the other way a little bit
- 1:24:43Speaker 11: in the first half and that wasn't kind of, I
- 1:24:45Speaker 11: think where our identity is. I thought when we just
- 1:24:48Speaker 11: kind of got in your face and played a little
- 1:24:50Speaker 11: bit more aggressive, we played better football and that's, that's
- 1:24:53Speaker 11: probably where our bread and butter is right now, but
- 1:24:56Speaker 11: we need to be more versatile. And so we got
- 1:24:58Speaker 11: to continue to work on those other things.
- 1:25:00Speaker 2: All right. Uh, additionally, he was asked for updates. As
- 1:25:03Speaker 2: we mentioned, I was asked about a Lawrence Seymour who
- 1:25:06Speaker 2: didn't see as much action and And also ask about
- 1:25:11Speaker 2: Nick Townsend.
- 1:25:12Speaker 11: Nick Townsend, I would say right now is evaluated for
- 1:25:16Speaker 11: he's got a knee injury. We're going to continue to
- 1:25:20Speaker 11: evaluate him to see when we can get him back.
- 1:25:23Speaker 11: How long that will be, I don't know. And Lawrence Seymour,
- 1:25:25Speaker 11: he's fine. He'll be good to go and you'll see
- 1:25:28Speaker 11: more of Lawrence.
- 1:25:29Speaker 5: Okay, up next.
- 1:25:32Speaker 2: He talked about Ian Jafard earlier and he was asked
- 1:25:35Speaker 2: about how about the adjustment he's made coming in from
- 1:25:37Speaker 2: Arkansas I.
- 1:25:37Speaker 7: Think one thing for Ian you know in Arkansas.
- 1:25:41Speaker 11: For whatever reason maybe lack of depth I mean this
- 1:25:44Speaker 11: guy was playing 65-75 snaps a game and that's a
- 1:25:47Speaker 11: lot for a really big human being like him I
- 1:25:50Speaker 11: think one thing he learned here and it took time
- 1:25:53Speaker 11: is to understand we've got a rotation you don't have
- 1:25:55Speaker 11: to play 65 snaps as an interior defensive lineman for
- 1:25:59Speaker 11: us But man, if you give us really good 20
- 1:26:01Speaker 11: to 25, and that's maximum effort, great technique, then your
- 1:26:07Speaker 11: quality of film that you're putting out there is a
- 1:26:10Speaker 11: better product. And I think that that's what he's understood.
- 1:26:13Speaker 11: He doesn't have to preserve himself. He doesn't have to
- 1:26:15Speaker 11: think about, man, I hope I'm there in the fourth
- 1:26:18Speaker 11: quarter because I know I'm going to have to keep playing.
- 1:26:20Speaker 7: We've got a good rotation.
- 1:26:21Speaker 11: We've got plenty of bodies in there, and I think
- 1:26:23Speaker 11: he's understanding that. He's becoming a dominant player for us
- 1:26:27Speaker 11: that way on the inside.
- 1:26:29Speaker 5: Okay.
- 1:26:30Speaker 2: A couple more things. Asked about Justice Terry, who didn't
- 1:26:33Speaker 2: get on the field much. Didn't get on the field
- 1:26:35Speaker 2: at all.
- 1:26:37Speaker 11: Kind of hurt his foot in pregame warmups and just
- 1:26:40Speaker 11: didn't feel like he could push off the way that
- 1:26:42Speaker 11: he is capable of. And that hurt because we had
- 1:26:47Speaker 11: a plan for him in this game. You know, we
- 1:26:48Speaker 11: were counting on him. And in football, sometimes that happens,
- 1:26:51Speaker 11: you know, and you just deal with it. Hopefully we
- 1:26:53Speaker 11: get him back sooner rather than later because he is
- 1:26:55Speaker 11: performing at a high level. We definitely need to get
- 1:26:57Speaker 11: him back going.
- 1:26:59Speaker 5: And then additionally, he was asked about....
- 1:27:05Speaker 2: That sequence where, and I know folks saw it on
- 1:27:08Speaker 2: social media, where he stepped outside of his office later
- 1:27:11Speaker 2: with his wife, Lori, out on the deck, the south
- 1:27:14Speaker 2: end zone, was kind of taking it all in.
- 1:27:17Speaker 11: I took a, you know, honestly, I took a couple
- 1:27:18Speaker 11: moments Saturday night. I took one after we sang the
- 1:27:21Speaker 11: Eyes of Texas and just looking at the crowd. You know,
- 1:27:26Speaker 11: normally you sing the Eyes and then people start hitting
- 1:27:29Speaker 11: the stairways and start hitting the tunnels and they're trying
- 1:27:32Speaker 11: to get out of here.
- 1:27:33Speaker 7: Nobody left.
- 1:27:34Speaker 11: You know, and I don't think anyone wanted to leave.
- 1:27:36Speaker 11: I don't think people want it to be over, you know,
- 1:27:38Speaker 11: and it was like, what a special moment. And then
- 1:27:41Speaker 11: for me afterwards, you know, you take your time getting
- 1:27:45Speaker 11: off the field and you're seeing your family and you're
- 1:27:47Speaker 11: seeing friends and you're hugging players and coaches, families and
- 1:27:52Speaker 11: wives and the whole thing. And you get in the
- 1:27:53Speaker 11: locker room and you're in there with your team. And
- 1:27:55Speaker 11: that's a very intimate moment for us as a team
- 1:27:58Speaker 11: and commending them for for their resilience and their grit
- 1:28:01Speaker 11: in this game. And then you go upstairs and I
- 1:28:04Speaker 11: talk to you guys. And then I go into the
- 1:28:06Speaker 11: recruiting lounge and I'm talking to shoot. We had every
- 1:28:09Speaker 11: top player in the country. It felt like here. So
- 1:28:10Speaker 11: you talk to all them. Then I go get on
- 1:28:12Speaker 11: the radio show.
- 1:28:13Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:28:14Speaker 7: And I'm on with Craig and I'm doing all that.
- 1:28:16Speaker 11: And then I finally got into my office with my
- 1:28:18Speaker 11: wife and it was like, I kind of want to
- 1:28:20Speaker 11: take this into, you know, and it's been about an
- 1:28:22Speaker 11: hour now since the game. And, and so I, I literally, I,
- 1:28:24Speaker 11: we just walked outside and, um, You know, DKR is
- 1:28:28Speaker 11: a special place. And I know it's a special place
- 1:28:31Speaker 11: for a lot of people. But clearly for me and
- 1:28:34Speaker 11: for us, it's a special place. And I think that
- 1:28:37Speaker 11: we've created an atmosphere here that is special. And like
- 1:28:40Speaker 11: I said, I don't think the environment that Saturday night
- 1:28:43Speaker 11: that we have was the environment that we.
- 1:28:46Speaker 7: Had our first season here.
- 1:28:47Speaker 11: It has grown into a really special place that way. And,
- 1:28:52Speaker 11: you know, when we first got here on the west
- 1:28:55Speaker 11: side of the stadium, everyone used to sit in their seats. Now,
- 1:29:00Speaker 11: when we play, nobody's sitting in their seats. And there's
- 1:29:04Speaker 11: a definite vibe and energy that this place has become.
- 1:29:09Speaker 11: And you have games that, you know, don't always go
- 1:29:12Speaker 11: the way you script them that they're supposed to go.
- 1:29:14Speaker 11: And you beat the number one team in the country
- 1:29:18Speaker 11: at home, 24 to 23.
- 1:29:19Speaker 7: You outscore them 21 to nothing in the fourth quarter.
- 1:29:24Speaker 11: Like I'm going to take that in for a minute
- 1:29:26Speaker 11: and I'm going to give myself, you know, maybe five
- 1:29:28Speaker 11: to eight minutes before I go and shower and, you know,
- 1:29:31Speaker 11: eat some cold chicken or something, whatever the heck I
- 1:29:33Speaker 11: did after the game. And, but I just think, you know,
- 1:29:37Speaker 11: I don't want to let this go by like ho-hum.
- 1:29:39Speaker 11: It was just another one because that was special. And,
- 1:29:42Speaker 11: and I wanted to, I wanted to take it into,
- 1:29:44Speaker 11: and to, you know, we've come a long way as
- 1:29:46Speaker 11: a program and we're not done. We've got, we got
- 1:29:49Speaker 11: more work to do, but it's okay to take five
- 1:29:52Speaker 11: or 10 minutes to appreciate it. And then, Turn on
- 1:29:55Speaker 11: the UTSA tape against Texas State and start on that one.
- 1:29:58Speaker 7: You know, you're on to the next.
- 1:30:00Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:30:01Speaker 2: And then one more. He was asked about that balance.
- 1:30:06Speaker 2: And we talked about this last hour. Being a part
- 1:30:08Speaker 2: of the big non-conference games and the desire to win
- 1:30:11Speaker 2: games and make sure it doesn't hurt you for the
- 1:30:13Speaker 2: playoff and his updated feel on all of this.
- 1:30:17Speaker 11: I think that's a really good question because, you know,
- 1:30:20Speaker 11: the brand is the brand, you know.
- 1:30:22Speaker 7: And surely.
- 1:30:24Speaker 11: There's a lot of teams that would want to play
- 1:30:26Speaker 11: us in the event, right, in those games. And obviously
- 1:30:29Speaker 11: television loves to have the brand on television and the
- 1:30:33Speaker 11: viewership and all the things. And we've got a locker
- 1:30:36Speaker 11: room full of players that come here to be part
- 1:30:39Speaker 11: of those types of games. And we've got a fan
- 1:30:41Speaker 11: base that loves to watch us compete at the highest
- 1:30:44Speaker 11: level in those games. I've said this all along. We
- 1:30:48Speaker 11: want to play in those games. There's so much about
- 1:30:51Speaker 11: those games that matter. For a lot of reasons to
- 1:30:55Speaker 11: be part of those games, competitively the balance is.
- 1:31:02Speaker 7: When you take in humans.
- 1:31:04Speaker 11: And they're the ones that dictate who makes the playoffs.
- 1:31:09Speaker 11: Like we're not the NFL where it's all based on
- 1:31:12Speaker 11: what's your record, who did you beat, those are the
- 1:31:14Speaker 11: teams that make it. You make the playoffs based off
- 1:31:17Speaker 11: of opinions of others, essentially, right? Outside of unless you
- 1:31:20Speaker 11: win your conference. And so there's a fine line in
- 1:31:23Speaker 11: that is what is.
- 1:31:23Speaker 7: The impact of that?
- 1:31:25Speaker 11: And what are the metrics that they're using to determine
- 1:31:28Speaker 11: who makes the playoffs? And so that's the risk reward.
- 1:31:32Speaker 11: You know, I hope Ohio State does not get punished
- 1:31:35Speaker 11: for that game Saturday night. They played a heck of
- 1:31:38Speaker 11: a game. I mean, it's 24-23. They lose a scorn
- 1:31:42Speaker 11: with 25 seconds to go in the game that I
- 1:31:45Speaker 11: hope if they end up being a 9-3 team, the
- 1:31:50Speaker 11: committee can appreciate the fact that they came to Austin,
- 1:31:52Speaker 11: Texas in September when it was 100 degrees and played
- 1:31:56Speaker 11: us in that environment and played a heck of a game.
- 1:32:00Speaker 11: And so they should not be punished. Quite frankly, Ohio
- 1:32:03Speaker 11: State should be rewarded for playing in this game against us.
- 1:32:06Speaker 11: And so that's my goal.
- 1:32:08Speaker 7: Time will tell.
- 1:32:09Speaker 11: And this isn't crying over spilled milk. I don't think
- 1:32:13Speaker 11: we got rewarded for going to Columbus last year in
- 1:32:16Speaker 11: week one. Hopefully this year they reward Ohio State for
- 1:32:19Speaker 11: coming and playing in this game with us this year.
- 1:32:23Speaker 7: I don't know how their season goes. They may go 11-1.
- 1:32:25Speaker 7: It's a moot point.
- 1:32:26Speaker 11: But if they are 9-3, and depending on what happens
- 1:32:29Speaker 11: to those other two, surely I hope they get rewarded
- 1:32:32Speaker 11: for playing this game and not. Because if they don't
- 1:32:34Speaker 11: reward them for playing in the game... Then all of
- 1:32:37Speaker 11: us start playing FCS, Power Six, and then I don't
- 1:32:42Speaker 11: think that's the product that we want in college football.
- 1:32:44Speaker 7: You guys love it. We love it.
- 1:32:46Speaker 11: Our fans love it. The players love it. Everybody loves
- 1:32:49Speaker 11: those matchups. Well, if we want to continue with those matchups,
- 1:32:53Speaker 11: we've got to reward the teams for playing in those games.
- 1:32:55Speaker 5: No question. It makes a big difference. All right.
- 1:32:59Speaker 2: We'll hear some more from the Houston Texans coming up
- 1:33:02Speaker 2: when we continue on 1300 The Zone. Are you choosing
- 1:33:08Speaker 2: this one because of the Houston Texans or the Cowboys?
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: Take your pick.
- 1:33:15Speaker 5: Rams, Commanders, Chargers, Saints.
- 1:33:20Speaker 9: Most of our listeners and the two of us in here, 0-1.
- 1:33:22Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:33:27Speaker 2: Well, that includes the Texans. Lost that heartbreaker to a
- 1:33:30Speaker 2: good Buffalo Bills team. Team I picked. to win the
- 1:33:33Speaker 2: Super Bowl.
- 1:33:33Speaker 3: Yeah, I'd feel really good about that.
- 1:33:35Speaker 9: I can't believe we didn't talk about them first when
- 1:33:37Speaker 9: you brought up my week one takeaways because that was impressive.
- 1:33:42Speaker 2: Domenico Ryans, their head coach, was asked, you know, there's
- 1:33:46Speaker 2: a lot of microscope on C.J. Stroud, you know, with
- 1:33:51Speaker 2: the turnovers last year and the whole contract situation. And then,
- 1:33:54Speaker 2: of course, he has the ball stripped from him there
- 1:33:56Speaker 2: on that final drive. He was asked for Stroud's performance.
- 1:33:59Speaker 7: C.J.
- 1:33:59Speaker 13: Was very much in control the entire game. He took
- 1:34:03Speaker 13: what the defense gave him. He made great decisions with
- 1:34:06Speaker 13: the football. I'm proud of the way he played today.
- 1:34:10Speaker 13: I thought he showed what he's been showing all camp.
- 1:34:13Speaker 13: He's been showing that confidence. He's been showing that growth,
- 1:34:17Speaker 13: and it showed today out there. He was very calm,
- 1:34:21Speaker 13: great demeanor on the sideline, great demeanor on the field,
- 1:34:24Speaker 13: just having the offense under control, putting us in a
- 1:34:27Speaker 13: great position to win the football game.
- 1:34:28Speaker 7: Unfortunately, we lost the football there two times.
- 1:34:31Speaker 13: We Don't want those plays at all, but not going
- 1:34:35Speaker 13: to let that overshadow.
- 1:34:36Speaker 7: The game that he had.
- 1:34:37Speaker 13: Offense put up way more points than needed for us
- 1:34:42Speaker 13: to win this game, so it's not on us. We
- 1:34:44Speaker 13: played together, but we could have definitely played much better defensively.
- 1:34:49Speaker 2: Okay, and toward that end, Buffalo had a lot of
- 1:34:51Speaker 2: explosive plays. Did D'Amico feel like they saw something there?
- 1:34:57Speaker 2: explosive plays?
- 1:34:58Speaker 13: They throw the ball up and we were in position
- 1:35:01Speaker 13: to make plays. Reed had one on the sideline, had.
- 1:35:04Speaker 7: His hands on it.
- 1:35:05Speaker 13: Kamari had his hands on the ball. Kalen had his
- 1:35:08Speaker 13: hands on the ball. So we had multiple opportunities. If
- 1:35:11Speaker 13: we come down and we catch those balls, the game
- 1:35:14Speaker 13: looks a ton different than it does right now.
- 1:35:16Speaker 7: But hey, those.
- 1:35:17Speaker 5: Guys are great players.
- 1:35:18Speaker 13: They made plays and we didn't make plays. You don't
- 1:35:21Speaker 13: win a game if you don't make a play on defense.
- 1:35:24Speaker 13: So when you allow you know that offense that quarterback
- 1:35:27Speaker 13: with the style they play you know the ball is
- 1:35:30Speaker 13: up in the air you know at the end of
- 1:35:32Speaker 13: the day players got to make plays.
- 1:35:33Speaker 2: All right and then one more from cj stroud asked
- 1:35:36Speaker 2: to evaluate his performance in the game.
- 1:35:39Speaker 15: Oh yeah i thought you know first i mean just
- 1:35:42Speaker 15: can't turn the ball over you know the first drive
- 1:35:44Speaker 15: you know it gives him three points so uh that
- 1:35:46Speaker 15: makes it a little easier for them at the end
- 1:35:47Speaker 15: but thought after that you know we set it in
- 1:35:50Speaker 15: pretty good thought the protection was great thought we ran
- 1:35:52Speaker 15: the ball i thought you know i was accurate and
- 1:35:54Speaker 15: made some throws, used my feet a little bit. So
- 1:35:57Speaker 15: a lot of positive things. But, you know, when you
- 1:36:00Speaker 15: don't win, you know, it's, you know, things you always
- 1:36:02Speaker 15: can fix. And even when you do win. But, you know,
- 1:36:05Speaker 15: we try to address those issues and, you know, get
- 1:36:07Speaker 15: back to the board. But I thought overall as offense,
- 1:36:09Speaker 15: you know, we had a pretty good day. Just can't
- 1:36:11Speaker 15: come out in the second half and get two, three
- 1:36:12Speaker 15: and outs. That's really big time for us. We got
- 1:36:14Speaker 15: to be able to, you know, either flip the field
- 1:36:16Speaker 15: or go get some points.
- 1:36:17Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:36:18Speaker 2: We'll be back to wrap up today's edition of the
- 1:36:20Speaker 2: program on 13 Under the Zone.
