- 0:00Hi, this is Stephanie Maas, partner with Thinking Ahead Search.
- 0:05Today I want to have a conversation with you about having the conversation.
- 0:11When in doubt, go find out.
- 0:13It's very interesting for my personal search desk in business.
- 0:18A hundred percent of the people I talk to are bankers.
- 0:21Five percent are in a category of, Hey, I'm really happy.
- 0:25Um, my next step is retirement and that's in the next six months to a year.
- 0:30Thanks for reaching out, but no thanks.
- 0:32I'm not going anywhere and nothing could possibly change that.
- 0:35The next 5 percent are, Oh my gosh, thank goodness you called me.
- 0:39I am absolutely miserable.
- 0:41What do you got?
- 0:41What do you got?
- 0:42What do you got?
- 0:43I'm most likely not going to place that person either.
- 0:45Or the first one.
- 0:46Where I spend most of my time is in the 90 percent and these are the folks that are not actively looking but actively Listening and my counsel to them is you never know Actively looking is very different than actively listening Really good opportunities don't come up every single day And even if you're happy, you can't bury your head in the sand Now, that certainly doesn't mean that you change jobs every two years.
- 1:15That is absolutely the wrong path.
- 1:18But what it does mean is that you stay listening.
- 1:21And if you're not sure if it holds any appeal, go have a conversation.
- 1:25It can't hurt.
- 1:26It's not active interviewing.
- 1:28It's just listening.
- 1:30One of the unique parts of my world is I spend just as much time talking to hiring managers about how to do better and more effective hiring as I do with candidates about how to make better job decisions, whether they're saying or leaving or whatever the case may be.
- 1:45And I actually love that I play for both sides.
- 1:49Now, with that being said, one of the themes that has come out of a lot of dialogue has been this idea of having a conversation.
- 1:58In the past, when I have worked with hiring managers, they have only wanted to interview folks if they absolutely believed that based on their resume and some conversation that we had when I represented them, that they were absolutely hands down a fit for the job.
- 2:17And usually that was okay.
- 2:19But times have changed and if you ever watch the best recruiters, whether it be college coaches or folks for professional sports or whatever the case may be, they actually start recruiting years before the talent that they want becomes available.
- 2:38It's an intentional strategy.
- 2:41So, maybe you take a look at somebody and they're not quite right, or they're, uh, I just don't know.
- 2:48I'm going to be pretty tough until you go have the conversation anyway.
- 2:54Maybe they're not right right now, but maybe in two years when they are, and trust me, you're going to have an opening, they will be, and they'll remember the conversation and how much they enjoyed it, and they'll want to come talk to you again.
- 3:08Maybe they won't.
- 3:09Maybe it'll totally go nowhere, but in the meantime, somebody comes up to them and goes, Hey, I got a call about an opportunity with XYZ organization.
- 3:18What do you know about them?
- 3:19Oh man, I actually talked to them about six months ago.
- 3:22It wasn't the right time or the right position, but man, they're a great organization.
- 3:26You think that might help right now?
- 3:28You have no idea what is happening, what conversations are happening all around you that make recruiting and hiring easier or harder.
- 3:38So why not stack as much in your favor as you can by going out, having conversations and leaving folks with the impression you want them to have of your organization.
- 3:52There's also just matters of misunderstanding.
- 3:55Earlier this week, I was talking to a potential candidate about an opportunity.
- 4:00And before we got too far into the dialogue, he said, Hey, let me do a little research.
- 4:04I'll call you back with questions.
- 4:05I hadn't really had an opportunity to tell him much other than the name of the position and the bank.
- 4:10So a couple of days later, he sent me an email and said, Hey, I read the job description, did a little bit of research.
- 4:15I don't think this is the right fit for me, but I'd still like to talk to you because I think I do want to make a move sooner rather than later.
- 4:21Take care.
- 4:21So, we got on the phone a couple days later and, you know, I said, Hey, I'm just curious.
- 4:26What did you see that you didn't like?
- 4:28And we started to talk through it.
- 4:30Well, come to find out, he looked at the job description and candidly misinterpreted a couple of the things that it said.
- 4:36But once we had an opportunity to really talk through what the job was, what the responsibilities were, what the environment was like, he said, Oh, wait, I actually am really interested in that.
- 4:48I like the bank.
- 4:49I just thought the role was more like this.
- 4:51Instead of how you're describing and it just made me think about that for a second.
- 4:55How many times do we write things off because we kind of glance over it.
- 4:59We hear something.
- 5:00Yeah, I don't know.
- 5:01I'm not sure.
- 5:01We're just so busy these days.
- 5:02We don't take the time to really find out.
- 5:05He could have missed out on his next great opportunity.
- 5:08So maybe you hear about an opportunity you think may or may not be for you.
- 5:13Go find out.
- 5:14Go have a meeting.
- 5:15I know that sounds self serving from a recruiter's perspective, but is it really?
- 5:20Is it serving me or serving you?
- 5:22Chances are it's serving both.
- 5:24Now, at the same time, candidates, listen up.
- 5:26Historically, I don't love the idea of window shopping.
- 5:31I think it wastes everybody's time.
- 5:33I think it sets you up to look unfavorable.
- 5:37However, there is a difference between window shopping And having productive conversation.
- 5:44If you're working with a recruiter, make sure they represent you appropriately.
- 5:48But I tell candidates all the time, Hey, I don't know if this is right for you right now, but there's something going on at this organization.
- 5:58That you need to know about and you don't need to hear about it from me.
- 6:01So let me do you a solid.
- 6:03Let me set you to go have a conversation.
- 6:06You hear it from them directly, then we can decide what to do.
- 6:12These are good, healthy, productive conversations.
- 6:16And whether you're a client or a candidate.
- 6:19You should be filling your days and weeks with these types of conversations all year long.
- 6:25So, when in doubt, go find out.
