- 0:00Speaker 1: And now move the sticks with Daniel Jeremiah and Bucky Brooks.
- 0:07Speaker 2: What's up, everybody?
- 0:07Speaker 3: Welcome to move the sticks, DJ Buck with you Buck?
- 0:10Speaker 3: We went matching matching sweatshirts today. Yeah are and I
- 0:16Speaker 3: was having the coffee and you're having a coffee here,
- 0:18Speaker 3: So I feel like the brand. Yeah, we are representing
- 0:21Speaker 3: the brand, that's right. But we're kind of on the
- 0:24Speaker 3: same page here this morning. How was your night last night?
- 0:26Speaker 3: Did you get a chance to watch those ball games?
- 0:28Speaker 2: I mean I did have a chance to watch both
- 0:30Speaker 2: of them.
- 0:31Speaker 1: I'm in North Carolina hanging with my parents, so I
- 0:33Speaker 1: got a chance to watch the Vikings in Chicago paid
- 0:36Speaker 1: more attention to than the Raiders. I called the end
- 0:39Speaker 1: of the Raiders game for the most part, but it
- 0:41Speaker 1: was interesting the Minnesota Vikings keep rolling the Bears r
- 0:45Speaker 1: ms and oh.
- 0:46Speaker 2: My gosh, job, we're gonna get a job. Yeah, that
- 0:50Speaker 2: job is gonna be a tougher job than everyone thinks
- 0:52Speaker 2: about it, no doubt.
- 0:54Speaker 3: It's time for the lead block presented by T Mobile
- 0:56Speaker 3: for Business. Football needs a network willing to go to
- 0:58Speaker 3: the extra yards. So do you go further? With T
- 1:00Speaker 3: Mobile for Business. It's interesting read right, there coming into
- 1:04Speaker 3: this game because we start on the bear side of things.
- 1:08Speaker 3: I was trying to think of, like, Okay, all the
- 1:10Speaker 3: different things they need to fix and the problems they
- 1:12Speaker 3: need to solve in the off season, But the number
- 1:15Speaker 3: one thing Buck is they've got to fix the Wi Fi.
- 1:20Speaker 3: They because we've talked about this like that Caleb is
- 1:23Speaker 3: having these freeze moments. Like if you've been on your
- 1:26Speaker 3: Wi Fi and the Wi Fi freezes, that's what's going
- 1:28Speaker 3: on with Caleb. They got to get that out of him. Man,
- 1:31Speaker 3: where he's just like a glitching, He's just kind of stuck.
- 1:33Speaker 3: He's got to get unstuck in the offseason. It's one
- 1:38Speaker 3: of the more it's a weird thing to watch.
- 1:42Speaker 1: A player that you've seen play very fluid become very robotic,
- 1:46Speaker 1: and it's almost as if there were too many voices
- 1:49Speaker 1: in his head, too many people telling them how to play.
- 1:52Speaker 1: And it's one of the things that you worry about
- 1:54Speaker 1: with all players, but particularly players that may be a
- 1:56Speaker 1: little unorthodox in their games. Sometimes they try to conform
- 2:01Speaker 1: to be more of a traditional player, but the traditional
- 2:04Speaker 1: player is not what made them special and set them
- 2:07Speaker 1: apart from their peers, and so You're always dancing that
- 2:10Speaker 1: fine line between Hey, I need you to be traditional
- 2:13Speaker 1: in some aspects, but we love you because of the
- 2:15Speaker 1: different stuff that you bring to the table. Don't deviat
- 2:18Speaker 1: her straight too far from that part of your game,
- 2:21Speaker 1: because that's what separates you from others. It's just really
- 2:24Speaker 1: hard to kind of tell him what to listen to
- 2:27Speaker 1: and what not to listen to when he's trying to
- 2:29Speaker 1: figure out how to play.
- 2:30Speaker 3: Yeah, and I was, you know, just kind of watching
- 2:32Speaker 3: the game, and I was thinking, Okay, he's going to
- 2:34Speaker 3: get hit in the pocket anyways because of a combination
- 2:36Speaker 3: of him holding the ball and them not being great
- 2:39Speaker 3: up front. So if my guy's going to take hits,
- 2:42Speaker 3: I'd rather have him take hits on the other side
- 2:43Speaker 3: of the line of scrimmage, you know what I mean.
- 2:45Speaker 3: Like that's why I'm kind of and I know he's
- 2:48Speaker 3: beat up a little bit, but man, I would be
- 2:51Speaker 3: calling more design quarterback runs buck until we kind of
- 2:53Speaker 3: get him kind of out of that little rut that
- 2:56Speaker 3: he's in.
- 2:57Speaker 2: You know.
- 2:57Speaker 1: It's funny, and you would hear the quarterbacks talk about
- 3:01Speaker 1: this all the time. Cam Newton and some others would
- 3:03Speaker 1: talk about it, and they're not the same type player,
- 3:05Speaker 1: but gam would talk about he wouldn't relax until he
- 3:08Speaker 1: ran the ball a few times, because when you're at
- 3:10Speaker 1: your when the anxiety is at its highest early in
- 3:14Speaker 1: the game, you kind of need something to settle that down.
- 3:16Speaker 2: And I don't know how it was for you, but
- 3:17Speaker 2: for me as a player.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Everything kind of came back to normal after I touched
- 3:21Speaker 1: the ball that first time and got hit. Whether it
- 3:23Speaker 1: was a kickoff return or catching a pass or whatever,
- 3:26Speaker 1: you kind of need to get that out of your
- 3:27Speaker 1: system so you can settle down and play. And for Caleb,
- 3:31Speaker 1: I want to get him into his comfort zone as
- 3:34Speaker 1: soon as I can. And so if that's a design
- 3:36Speaker 1: quarterback run early in the series, if that's something where
- 3:38Speaker 1: I put him on the move where he has the
- 3:39Speaker 1: option to maybe utilize his legs, but whatever it is,
- 3:43Speaker 1: whoever is the play caller, whoever's the head coach next year,
- 3:47Speaker 1: they need to make sure they find what makes him
- 3:50Speaker 1: tick and what can get him into his comfort zone
- 3:52Speaker 1: right away, because when he's in his comfort zone, he's
- 3:54Speaker 1: a much different player than the uncomfortable player that we'll watch.
- 3:58Speaker 3: Four carries for three yards and those are mostly scrambles,
- 4:02Speaker 3: I don't remember off top of my head designed quarterback
- 4:04Speaker 3: runs in that ball game.
- 4:05Speaker 2: So I don't know.
- 4:06Speaker 3: That was just one of the things I was thinking
- 4:08Speaker 3: trying and loosen him up a little bit. But he's
- 4:10Speaker 3: and it was trike Ma did a good job of
- 4:12Speaker 3: going through it on the broadcast, showing like, hey, you're
- 4:14Speaker 3: at the top of your drop, it's there, take it,
- 4:16Speaker 3: it's wide open, just take it. Yep, he's just kind
- 4:19Speaker 3: of stuck and frozen. He and sometimes look like he's
- 4:21Speaker 3: even looking at it, but he won't he won't pull
- 4:23Speaker 3: the trigger. So and I know he's gone bazillion games
- 4:26Speaker 3: in a row without throwing an interception. I mean, I
- 4:27Speaker 3: guess that's something you can build off of, but I'd
- 4:31Speaker 3: rather live with some interceptions and let him play loose
- 4:33Speaker 3: and free and uh and see the guy that we drafted.
- 4:36Speaker 3: But I also think the other point Aikman made, which
- 4:39Speaker 3: was good, was Akman was terrible.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Was rookie year. Team wasn't good. He was terrible. You know,
- 4:43Speaker 2: we saw it with.
- 4:43Speaker 3: We've seen you know, Sam Donald on the other side
- 4:45Speaker 3: of the field go through multiple years of not being
- 4:48Speaker 3: a great player, and now he's in the right spot,
- 4:50Speaker 3: the right fit talked a lot about how he learned
- 4:52Speaker 3: from Kyle Shanahan about defenses. I thought was fascinating, you know.
- 4:57Speaker 3: And by the way, Troigman's really good. I don't know
- 4:59Speaker 3: how I'm not getting into like ranking broadcasters and people
- 5:02Speaker 3: like this guy.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Don't like that guy. He's really good.
- 5:05Speaker 3: Man like he had some insights in that from his
- 5:07Speaker 3: experience playing the position. I thought it was excellent.
- 5:11Speaker 2: You know.
- 5:12Speaker 1: It's funny because everyone has talked about Tom Brady and
- 5:14Speaker 1: some of the other broadcasters, and one I would tell
- 5:17Speaker 1: anybody because you and I have both done it. It's
- 5:18Speaker 1: a much harder deal than anyone can imagine. It is
- 5:22Speaker 1: hard to get nuggets in in a thirty second window
- 5:25Speaker 1: when so everyone understands the mechanics of the thing. The
- 5:29Speaker 1: playback play guy has everything to the snap, and then
- 5:32Speaker 1: once the play is done, the color guy has everything
- 5:35Speaker 1: from the end of the play into the huddle breaks.
- 5:38Speaker 1: And so you have to have your points like dialed in.
- 5:42Speaker 1: You have to be concise, but you have to be
- 5:44Speaker 1: able to be a storyteller within those moments, and it's
- 5:48Speaker 1: hard sometimes to process that all in your head to
- 5:51Speaker 1: get it out and to make it coherent and if
- 5:54Speaker 1: it's a story that needs multiple plays to be able
- 5:57Speaker 1: to continue to pick up where you left off on
- 6:00Speaker 1: the previous play. There's an art to it, which is
- 6:02Speaker 1: why when you talk about Troy Aikman and some of
- 6:04Speaker 1: the other guys that are revered for what they do, Yeah,
- 6:08Speaker 1: it's not something that you can just fall out the
- 6:10Speaker 1: bed and be great at.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Yeah, no, no question.
- 6:12Speaker 3: I thought he just provided a lot of perspective and
- 6:14Speaker 3: really hope for Bears fans too. It's like, hey, this
- 6:17Speaker 3: doesn't happen right away for everybody. There's you know, there's
- 6:22Speaker 3: all the tools are in there, all the abilities in there.
- 6:24Speaker 3: They need to get the next hire right, and you
- 6:26Speaker 3: get the right person around him. I know, I know
- 6:29Speaker 3: there's been talking and people have promoted, okay, we should
- 6:32Speaker 3: get Mike Vrabel because of his historical success. You know,
- 6:35Speaker 3: the physicality kind of matches the way they want to play,
- 6:39Speaker 3: you know, in that city in Chicago, to match your environment.
- 6:42Speaker 3: That's been you know that Marcus Freeman's name has been mentioned.
- 6:45Speaker 3: Just a short trip over from Notre Dame. Buck, I'm
- 6:48Speaker 3: normally like, hey, you get the best leader, you know,
- 6:50Speaker 3: that's the that's the right coach. And then you can
- 6:52Speaker 3: hire the right coaches around him in this particular situation
- 6:55Speaker 3: because it is a package that must be handled with care.
- 6:58Speaker 3: I don't know how they don't hire or an offensive
- 7:00Speaker 3: coach where the voice is not going to change, you know,
- 7:03Speaker 3: where you can have that same system, same voice in
- 7:05Speaker 3: your head for at least you're committing to you know,
- 7:07Speaker 3: most of these coach is going to get three years,
- 7:09Speaker 3: so at least that's a three year full commitment to
- 7:12Speaker 3: some stability around Caleb Williams.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Yeah, it's really hard because, look, I think there's so
- 7:19Speaker 1: many things that the Bears have to fix beyond the quarterback.
- 7:22Speaker 1: I understand what you're saying about the stability and the
- 7:24Speaker 1: continuity that you're guaranteed if the head coach is the
- 7:28Speaker 1: play caller or is an offensive mind where he's bringing
- 7:31Speaker 1: his own playbook and those things. I just wonder when
- 7:35Speaker 1: you're the Bears and they've tried that a few different times.
- 7:38Speaker 1: They try to remark trustsmen, they try to Matt Nagget,
- 7:40Speaker 1: They've tried it in other iterations. It's such a hard job,
- 7:44Speaker 1: and it appears that there's so many people who have
- 7:46Speaker 1: kind of their hands in the cookie dough. I think
- 7:49Speaker 1: you have to get the best leader, and if you
- 7:51Speaker 1: can get the best leader who is offensive centric, then
- 7:54Speaker 1: that'd be great.
- 7:55Speaker 2: I just think it's a really really hard job, and
- 7:57Speaker 2: I think.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Kayla Williams is there, but he's kind of there as
- 8:01Speaker 1: a backdrop to all the other issues that must be
- 8:03Speaker 1: fixed before the Bears can be really, really good.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:06Speaker 3: Yeah, you're right, there are a whole host of issues there.
- 8:09Speaker 3: By the way, the other side of things, Minnesota's not
- 8:11Speaker 3: done in this division. I mean we think about the
- 8:14Speaker 3: big picture. Shoot, it's all right in front of them.
- 8:17Speaker 2: It's all right in front of them.
- 8:19Speaker 1: And this is the thing about the NFL season and
- 8:23Speaker 1: why it's really a marathon and not a sprint. Whereas
- 8:26Speaker 1: great as the Detroit Lions have been for the majority
- 8:29Speaker 1: of the regular season, they could be a team that
- 8:31Speaker 1: limps into the postseason because injuries take them apart, and
- 8:35Speaker 1: the team that goes into the playoffs is not the
- 8:37Speaker 1: team that we saw for most of the year. Meanwhile,
- 8:40Speaker 1: the Minnesota Vikings have been relatively big injury free.
- 8:44Speaker 2: You had Derris Shaw, he's going down.
- 8:46Speaker 1: You've had some other bumps and bruises, but for the
- 8:48Speaker 1: most part, their core guys are there, and when you
- 8:51Speaker 1: look at them, it appears that they're playing better and
- 8:54Speaker 1: better each week, which is really a testament to the
- 8:56Speaker 1: coaching and that stuff. To me, the MINUSESO Vikings are dangerous.
- 9:01Speaker 1: Their legitimate threat to unseat the Detroit Lions as the
- 9:05Speaker 1: top the division leader, and if they win and they're
- 9:08Speaker 1: able to kind of like make their way to even
- 9:10Speaker 1: home field. Very very difficult team to deal with because
- 9:15Speaker 1: koc in the offense is rolling, and then Brian Flores
- 9:17Speaker 1: and the aggressive defense poses a bunch of different problems. Yeah,
- 9:20Speaker 1: you're right keeping eye on in Minnesota Vikings because they
- 9:22Speaker 1: definitely are coming.
- 9:24Speaker 3: I feel like we've been kind of the bad news
- 9:26Speaker 3: brigade here when it comes to the Lions.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Just it is what it is. I mean, you're coming
- 9:30Speaker 2: off of a tough.
- 9:30Speaker 3: Loss, You've had all these injuries and Buck, what was
- 9:34Speaker 3: the matchup we've been talking about that was like, Man,
- 9:36Speaker 3: the one that that I wouldn't love if I were
- 9:38Speaker 3: them is the Rams. So if you're the Detroit Lions
- 9:42Speaker 3: and Minnesota comes and they beat you in that game,
- 9:45Speaker 3: I believe it's the last week of the season.
- 9:47Speaker 2: You're the fifth seed.
- 9:48Speaker 3: You're not only going to you're not only playing the Rams,
- 9:50Speaker 3: You're playing the Rams on the road.
- 9:52Speaker 2: You're not playing the Rams at home.
- 9:53Speaker 3: Like that's that is a tough matchup for them as
- 9:56Speaker 3: the teams are constituted presently.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Yeah, no, it's not that a great matchup. It's certainly
- 10:01Speaker 1: not something that you want to see. And I'm telling
- 10:05Speaker 1: you the two things they worry about the Detroit Lions.
- 10:07Speaker 1: And I am the biggest Dan Campbell fan that you
- 10:09Speaker 1: can find out there. I'm worried a little bit about
- 10:12Speaker 1: the risk taking. I understand the identity. I understand how
- 10:15Speaker 1: you built the team, and I understand all of those
- 10:17Speaker 1: things like all gas, no breaks, whatever, the iteration of
- 10:20Speaker 1: being aggressive is. However, I want you to be aggressive,
- 10:25Speaker 1: but I don't want you to be reckless. And I
- 10:28Speaker 1: think sometimes he board his own recklessness when it comes
- 10:31Speaker 1: to the decision making beyond side kick in that game
- 10:35Speaker 1: with twelve minutes left, little reckless. Some of the gambles
- 10:39Speaker 1: that they take on when they go for it on
- 10:42Speaker 1: their own end of the field a little reckless. And
- 10:45Speaker 1: I don't want to say that I judge him based
- 10:47Speaker 1: on the result, but I do worry in the playoffs,
- 10:51Speaker 1: where really more games are lost in one because the
- 10:53Speaker 1: mistakes are magnified. I just worry about him and the
- 10:58Speaker 1: decision making in those pressure moments when he's just so
- 11:02Speaker 1: apt to go for it. On top of them not
- 11:06Speaker 1: having look a full lineup, a complete lineup, that really
- 11:09Speaker 1: made them different than the other teams in the division.
- 11:12Speaker 3: I've never asked you this question, but I was thinking
- 11:14Speaker 3: about because you you've brought up concerns on Sirianni, and
- 11:18Speaker 3: we talked about that, right, how Sirianni has a little
- 11:21Speaker 3: edginess to him. Buck I'm learning out like he wants
- 11:24Speaker 3: even keel, he wants a steady hand at the wheel.
- 11:26Speaker 2: He doesn't want the emotional.
- 11:28Speaker 3: So so then and then now Dan Campbell, you voice
- 11:31Speaker 3: your concerns on Dan Campbell being overly aggressive. So when
- 11:33Speaker 3: I was thinking about the coaches that you've been around, like,
- 11:36Speaker 3: because I think of Marty Schottenheimer's emotional like Edgy Kauflin
- 11:41Speaker 3: the unique how he how he operates, but I think
- 11:44Speaker 3: there's an energy and him, and then I think of
- 11:47Speaker 3: Mike Holmgren and from the outside looking at it seems
- 11:49Speaker 3: like that's just like a steady, calm presence. So I'm
- 11:53Speaker 3: curious what your what your take is on the coaches
- 11:55Speaker 3: you've been around and what has given you this perspective,
- 11:59Speaker 3: Because I do like Buck, I know you well enough
- 12:01Speaker 3: to know that I think that you prefer somebody just
- 12:03Speaker 3: be hey, let's even keel, let's not get too big.
- 12:05Speaker 2: So so I mean, man, we can talk about it. Man.
- 12:09Speaker 1: My high school coach was edge, but he was consistent.
- 12:12Speaker 1: You knew what you were getting every day. Mac Brown
- 12:14Speaker 1: Hall of Fame.
- 12:15Speaker 2: Are very even keelled.
- 12:16Speaker 1: When it came to his emotional ups and downs, I
- 12:18Speaker 1: would say Marv Levy, Hall of Fame coach in Buffalo
- 12:21Speaker 1: very even keel.
- 12:22Speaker 2: Mike Honggrin was more of a cerebral coach.
- 12:25Speaker 1: He could explode, but he still kind of thought of
- 12:28Speaker 1: the game a little differently. I would say for all
- 12:30Speaker 1: the things that Tom Coughlin was in terms of like
- 12:34Speaker 1: not emotional but a disciplinarian in those things, I felt
- 12:38Speaker 1: like there was an emotional maturity about him when he
- 12:41Speaker 1: approached the game. Marty Schottenheimer was by far the most
- 12:44Speaker 1: confident coach that I've ever been around. But Marty is
- 12:48Speaker 1: the one that I coined the phrase like more games
- 12:50Speaker 1: are lost than one, because he would talk about that
- 12:52Speaker 1: He would talk about, guys, if we just take care
- 12:54Speaker 1: of the things that we can control, nobody would beat us.
- 12:57Speaker 2: Most teams can't beat us. We'll just wait for them
- 12:59Speaker 2: to implode.
- 13:00Speaker 1: He was like that, and I felt like his fatal
- 13:02Speaker 1: flaw was in San Diego. He tried to prove to
- 13:05Speaker 1: people that he is a risk taker, and so he
- 13:07Speaker 1: would take he's risk in the postseason. I'm like, that's
- 13:11Speaker 1: who you really have pretended to be. And then John Gruden,
- 13:13Speaker 1: it was his first year as a head coach. He
- 13:15Speaker 1: was a little more emotional on that.
- 13:16Speaker 2: But you may be right.
- 13:17Speaker 1: The guys that I've been most influenced by as a
- 13:19Speaker 1: coach were more not flatlined from an emotional standpoint, but
- 13:23Speaker 1: when it came to risk taking, maybe they were a
- 13:26Speaker 1: little more risk adverse than some of the others.
- 13:30Speaker 2: Yeah. No, I think it's interesting, man.
- 13:31Speaker 3: We just kind of look at who the influences were
- 13:34Speaker 3: because I think about kind of some of the coaches
- 13:36Speaker 3: that I've been around, and it was Jerry Moore when
- 13:40Speaker 3: I was in college, was just steady. You know, he's
- 13:43Speaker 3: a Hall of Fame coach, but he was not too
- 13:45Speaker 3: high or too low. He was very under control, calm,
- 13:49Speaker 3: never really raised his voice ever.
- 13:51Speaker 2: Ever.
- 13:52Speaker 3: Then, you know, I think about when I was in
- 13:54Speaker 3: college in Northeast Louisiana. Ed Zombrecker was the head coach there,
- 13:58Speaker 3: but he had a lot of he is more he
- 14:01Speaker 3: blew up on me a few times, but there was
- 14:03Speaker 3: he was kind of a little more even.
- 14:04Speaker 2: But then coaches around.
- 14:05Speaker 3: Him, he had a lot of volatility like around him
- 14:08Speaker 3: that way. And then we get Billick was high emotion.
- 14:12Speaker 3: You know, he tapped into the passion of the defense.
- 14:14Speaker 3: So he brought a lot of energy, confidence, you know,
- 14:19Speaker 3: bravado like that was kind of.
- 14:21Speaker 2: His his deal.
- 14:22Speaker 3: And then I had Andy Reid who was you know,
- 14:26Speaker 3: very even keel and Romeo Crenell who never raised his voice.
- 14:30Speaker 3: So it is interesting how the different coaches.
- 14:34Speaker 2: So it's funny.
- 14:35Speaker 1: So Andy Reid was an assistant coach in Green Bay
- 14:37Speaker 1: when I was there. He was the tight ends coach
- 14:39Speaker 1: in the quarterbacks coach, and he was in charge of
- 14:41Speaker 1: the scout team.
- 14:41Speaker 2: And I can see that and DJ.
- 14:43Speaker 1: So the common threa between all those guys, like for me,
- 14:47Speaker 1: coaching Hall of famers or Super Bowl winners, and so
- 14:52Speaker 1: you start thinking about like what wins and what wins
- 14:54Speaker 1: in the pick. There has to be a level of
- 14:57Speaker 1: calmness to your demeanor that you can make big decis
- 15:00Speaker 1: visions under pressure. And what I worry a little bit
- 15:02Speaker 1: about Dan Campbell and Nick Sirianni sometimes they're so emotional
- 15:07Speaker 1: that I wonder if the emotion drives the decision making
- 15:11Speaker 1: and what you would.
- 15:11Speaker 2: Like to do.
- 15:12Speaker 1: And this is something that Bill Washer said, Man, most
- 15:14Speaker 1: of your decisions should be made throughout the week. So
- 15:17Speaker 1: when you come to the situation, just look at your
- 15:19Speaker 1: sheet and say, hey, here's how we're going to approach it.
- 15:22Speaker 1: There shouldn't be this, Hey, let's draw it up in
- 15:24Speaker 1: the dirt and go because most of the time those things,
- 15:27Speaker 1: as much as we like to think about the novelty
- 15:29Speaker 1: of making adjustments and all that, a lot of that
- 15:31Speaker 1: should be already thought out when you're calm and cool
- 15:34Speaker 1: and you just make a decision that's been thoroughly researched
- 15:37Speaker 1: and you go with it. I just worry about Dan
- 15:41Speaker 1: Campbell because of the risk tape. For Nick Sirianni, I
- 15:43Speaker 1: just worry about the emotional stuff creating chaos on the
- 15:47Speaker 1: sideline where they can't think. Because it already seems like
- 15:49Speaker 1: Philadelphia is chaotic with their team. I just worry about
- 15:53Speaker 1: Nick Sirianni point a little kerosene I seen on.
- 15:57Speaker 2: It making it explode.
- 15:59Speaker 1: But I say that in recognizing that Nick saiir Janni's
- 16:03Speaker 1: won a lot of games.
- 16:04Speaker 2: Man, his record is.
- 16:06Speaker 1: One of the best records that you'll find for a
- 16:07Speaker 1: young coach that has taken over a program.
- 16:10Speaker 2: This is a little different.
- 16:11Speaker 3: So so let me ask you this because I was
- 16:12Speaker 3: thinking about this the other day with uh when we
- 16:15Speaker 3: were talking about Fangio and how Fangio has worked there
- 16:19Speaker 3: and didn't work in other places, you know, and so
- 16:22Speaker 3: it's the right having the right kind of kid. What
- 16:24Speaker 3: do we always joke about where all Phillies players come
- 16:27Speaker 3: from Georgia and Alabama.
- 16:30Speaker 2: Where they're used to that, where they have been mother,
- 16:33Speaker 2: mother and trucks.
- 16:36Speaker 3: Since you say they stepped on campus, that furnace, that furnace,
- 16:41Speaker 3: they've lived in that furnace, and they know how to
- 16:44Speaker 3: respond to that.
- 16:45Speaker 2: I never thought about that, but DJ, you are right
- 16:49Speaker 2: when you bring that up.
- 16:50Speaker 1: Because one of the things and one of the things
- 16:52Speaker 1: that we talked about when we go back to scouting,
- 16:55Speaker 1: like why you take players from winning programs and championship
- 16:58Speaker 1: programs or whatever. Part of that is like the pressure
- 17:02Speaker 1: that they've been under and playing in those big games.
- 17:05Speaker 1: But when you think about Alabama and Georgia, and I know,
- 17:09Speaker 1: like there's so many rules and restrictions in terms of
- 17:11Speaker 1: what you can ask players now. But you remember when
- 17:14Speaker 1: we talked about horror coaching and when you ask guys like, hey,
- 17:17Speaker 1: what's the best way to coach you? Is to walk
- 17:19Speaker 1: through visualization, yelling, screaming, horror coaching. The Georgia, the Philadelphia team,
- 17:27Speaker 1: a lot of guys they need horror coaching. Guys they're
- 17:30Speaker 1: respond to the horrid coaching because that's how Kirby Smart
- 17:34Speaker 1: goes about doing his business. He loves them up well man,
- 17:38Speaker 1: him and Nick Sabeman coached them hard.
- 17:40Speaker 2: To coach them hard, no question.
- 17:43Speaker 3: So again, I think that's part of the scouting process
- 17:45Speaker 3: is finding kids that match you're building and Howie Roseman
- 17:48Speaker 3: has done a great job of that. All Right, that's
- 17:50Speaker 3: a rap for the lead block presented by T Mobile
- 17:52Speaker 3: for Business. Football needs network willing to go to the
- 17:54Speaker 3: extra yard. So do you go further with T Mobile
- 17:56Speaker 3: for Business. We haven't forgot about the other game, the
- 17:58Speaker 3: Raiders and the fouls plus the rookie draft that's coming
- 18:02Speaker 3: up right after this, All right, Buck, we don't need
- 18:09Speaker 3: to spend a ton of time on it. I wasn't
- 18:12Speaker 3: you know, I wasn't super fired up to watch this game,
- 18:14Speaker 3: and I kind of got a reason why after seeing
- 18:18Speaker 3: what went down there.
- 18:19Speaker 2: Ugly, ugly game Atlanta and the Raiders.
- 18:22Speaker 1: Yeah, ugly game and a lot of conversation coming out
- 18:24Speaker 1: the game is gonna be Kirk Cousins, right, Kirk Cousins
- 18:26Speaker 1: didn't have another had struggled through another performance.
- 18:30Speaker 2: One and twelve yards? Yeah, I mean interception not playing well.
- 18:37Speaker 1: My thing is this, though, DJ Right, Because people have
- 18:40Speaker 1: talked about Michael Pennocks being in the bullpin, I think
- 18:43Speaker 1: is are we going through a rookie quarterback in the
- 18:46Speaker 1: middle of the thick of the playoff races.
- 18:48Speaker 2: To be like, okay, Mike, let's go get him to me.
- 18:53Speaker 1: This is something that if you're having those thoughts, don't
- 18:56Speaker 1: you want to give him a run up before yes,
- 19:00Speaker 1: to get into those elimination games and those pressurized games.
- 19:04Speaker 1: There's no acclimation period for Michael Pennix. If you put
- 19:08Speaker 1: him in the game right now, we're expecting him to
- 19:10Speaker 1: be ready right now, And I don't know if that's
- 19:13Speaker 1: fair to a young quarterback to throw them right into
- 19:15Speaker 1: deep end.
- 19:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:16Speaker 3: No, I it's getting to the point, man, where it's like,
- 19:22Speaker 3: I know the plans, I know what you want to do,
- 19:25Speaker 3: but it's you know, we got Christmas coming up, man,
- 19:28Speaker 3: and it's like having that package that you can see
- 19:31Speaker 3: it right over there in the corner of the room.
- 19:33Speaker 3: I'm kind of curious what's in that package, you.
- 19:36Speaker 2: Know what I mean? Like that that's to the point
- 19:39Speaker 2: where they are.
- 19:40Speaker 3: You know, I think, listening to Raheem's comments postgame, we're
- 19:44Speaker 3: getting close to open in that package. I don't think
- 19:48Speaker 3: they wanted to. I don't think that was their plan.
- 19:49Speaker 3: They were going to wait till Christmas. But here we are,
- 19:52Speaker 3: and that thing's you know, they think maybe I like,
- 19:54Speaker 3: maybe that's a little maybe there's a bike in there.
- 19:56Speaker 3: I take that thing around the block a little bit,
- 19:57Speaker 3: go play with my friends. I don't off that package
- 20:00Speaker 3: is going to stay on open much longer.
- 20:02Speaker 2: Buck.
- 20:03Speaker 1: So here's what I can say. And I don't think
- 20:06Speaker 1: I will out anybody when I say this. So the
- 20:08Speaker 1: Jaguars played the Atlanta Falcons in pre season. Michael Penix
- 20:12Speaker 1: didn't play. But I had a chance to go down
- 20:13Speaker 1: there because I know some guys on the coaching staff
- 20:15Speaker 1: and some of the supporting staff, and I was able
- 20:17Speaker 1: to put them something, Hey, man, what's the skinny.
- 20:19Speaker 2: Yeah, they're like, off the record, Yeah, Michael Penix's a
- 20:27Speaker 2: lot of a lot of role.
- 20:29Speaker 1: So then in pregame what they did because Michael Pennix
- 20:32Speaker 1: didn't play, so they do those guys had to do
- 20:34Speaker 1: kind of like what you'll see the Philadelphia Eagles when
- 20:36Speaker 1: the Eagles have inactives, their guys come out in pregame.
- 20:40Speaker 2: That's another practice. That's a rigorous workout.
- 20:43Speaker 1: It's not all almost said on the side and and
- 20:46Speaker 1: eat Swedish fish.
- 20:47Speaker 2: And chill out.
- 20:48Speaker 1: And let me just tell you, Michael Pennix and the
- 20:51Speaker 1: ball coming out as he's throwing routes on the doors,
- 20:54Speaker 1: it got a little little juiced to it, and you
- 20:58Speaker 1: can just see what.
- 21:00Speaker 2: Everyone was excited about.
- 21:02Speaker 1: Now, it's different when you put bodies on the field,
- 21:04Speaker 1: but in a simulated game, they told me he.
- 21:06Speaker 2: Lit it up.
- 21:07Speaker 1: There's a lot of positivity about him. It's just, man,
- 21:10Speaker 1: we're gonna drop him. We're gonna drop him. But I mean,
- 21:17Speaker 1: I think I've told you this story about my kids
- 21:19Speaker 1: learning how to swim. So my son, my son learned
- 21:24Speaker 1: there's this guy, mister Conrad. You're making guy this and that,
- 21:28Speaker 1: and he guaranteed I can teach your son how to
- 21:30Speaker 1: swim in five days. Literally, DJ you take him to
- 21:33Speaker 1: the pool and he's like, okay, what's your name, Trey?
- 21:36Speaker 2: Oh yeah, okay, you got to swim from something right
- 21:39Speaker 2: in the water.
- 21:41Speaker 1: My daughter went to a water whisperer and it was
- 21:44Speaker 1: like six weeks of sprinkling water on the head.
- 21:49Speaker 2: He's enough to.
- 21:50Speaker 1: Tell you my son was a stronger swimmer for the
- 21:53Speaker 1: longest time, and now my daughter can swim now.
- 21:55Speaker 2: But it's it's a different thing.
- 21:57Speaker 1: And so maybe maybe, just maybe they'll just take Michaels
- 22:00Speaker 1: and be like, oh yeah, what's that on your Yeah, give.
- 22:02Speaker 2: Me the floaties. Right, we just kind of figured out.
- 22:08Speaker 3: I'm telling you, man, like that's it just feels like
- 22:11Speaker 3: the temperatures changing in the room a little bit on
- 22:14Speaker 3: that whole decision, and whatever your plans were, they might
- 22:16Speaker 3: be a change in here, especially as you know, as
- 22:19Speaker 3: Tampa's playing really really well, so and.
- 22:22Speaker 1: Tampa's playing Tampa's playing so well the good thing for
- 22:25Speaker 1: the Falcons is they won both of those games. And
- 22:27Speaker 1: I would say that the Thursday night game, Man Tampa's
- 22:30Speaker 1: gonna root today. They let them come back and kind
- 22:32Speaker 1: of steal that one in the end because they out
- 22:34Speaker 1: played the Falcons for three and a half quarters and
- 22:35Speaker 1: they allowed the Falcons to swipe one.
- 22:39Speaker 2: But yeah, man Tampa's coming and they come.
- 22:41Speaker 1: In like a bear, and the Falcons have to figure
- 22:42Speaker 1: out a way that they're not scoring enough points, they're
- 22:44Speaker 1: not productive or explosive. Maybe Michael Pennix gives them a
- 22:47Speaker 1: little juice, but once you go to them, ain't no
- 22:51Speaker 1: turning back, no question yep. Now it's you can't drown.
- 22:55Speaker 1: You got to find a way to get up to
- 22:57Speaker 1: the surface because you're not going back. One thing on
- 23:00Speaker 1: the Raiders and uh and then we'll move on to
- 23:03Speaker 1: the rookie draft. But I was just thinking about it
- 23:05Speaker 1: with Tom Brady's presence there in that organization, could I mean,
- 23:09Speaker 1: this is going to be unlike anything we've ever seen.
- 23:10Speaker 1: If they have the first pick, you're going to have
- 23:13Speaker 1: the greatest quarterback of all time, who I would imagine
- 23:17Speaker 1: is going to be I mean, I would imagine you'll
- 23:20Speaker 1: be zooming with these kids all the time.
- 23:22Speaker 3: He's going to be doing watching film with them. He's
- 23:24Speaker 3: going to go work them out, spending all kinds of
- 23:26Speaker 3: time with them. Hey, Like I think of like if
- 23:28Speaker 3: you've seen Brady, like his notebooks of preparation that he has,
- 23:31Speaker 3: Like Tom Brady's gonna, hey, show me your notebook, Like
- 23:34Speaker 3: what have you been doing in college? Like show me
- 23:35Speaker 3: how your preparation? What that looks like on paper? Like
- 23:38Speaker 3: that's going to be fascinating to see how how involved
- 23:43Speaker 3: he is in this process and what Tom Brady values
- 23:46Speaker 3: does he is he looking for himself or is he
- 23:49Speaker 3: looking for someone? You know, this may be more quote
- 23:52Speaker 3: unquote a modern quarterback that can really move like and
- 23:55Speaker 3: I'm just looking at Shadoor versus cam Ord. Those are
- 23:58Speaker 3: two totally different types of guys. Sure is more tom
- 24:01Speaker 3: Brady like going to sit in the pocket, read it out,
- 24:04Speaker 3: and while cam Ward has got some more spice to him,
- 24:07Speaker 3: he can create, make some more plays with his legs,
- 24:09Speaker 3: and he's got more he's got more firepower.
- 24:12Speaker 2: So that's going to be interesting. Man, It's gonna be
- 24:14Speaker 2: interesting debate.
- 24:15Speaker 1: And I will say this, and you know it's funny
- 24:17Speaker 1: because I would like to think, and man, I love
- 24:21Speaker 1: everything that Tom Brady represents six round pick, like making
- 24:26Speaker 1: his way and becoming the greatest quarterback that we've ever seen.
- 24:29Speaker 1: The thing is, it's hard for great players sometimes to
- 24:33Speaker 1: be able to identify other great players. We saw John
- 24:35Speaker 1: Elway struggle with that for a long time. He is
- 24:37Speaker 1: one of the more decorated quarterbacks in the National Football League.
- 24:40Speaker 1: And they had a hard time finding.
- 24:41Speaker 2: At Weiler and Drew.
- 24:43Speaker 1: I mean they yeah, they found they had a hard
- 24:46Speaker 1: time finding a quarterback in the draft. Tom Brady, I think,
- 24:49Speaker 1: can be a great resource, can be a great guy.
- 24:52Speaker 1: He can kind of help have those conversations, but there's
- 24:55Speaker 1: no guarantee. And I think the thing that the Raiders
- 24:58Speaker 1: have to do after they make whatever decisions they make
- 25:01Speaker 1: at the end of the season, at some point the
- 25:03Speaker 1: Raiders have to sit in whatever decision they make. They
- 25:06Speaker 1: cannot continue to keep turning over coaches and personnel in
- 25:10Speaker 1: those things and think that they're going to be good.
- 25:13Speaker 1: Consistency and stability is the only way that you have
- 25:16Speaker 1: an opportunity to rise to the top. This is a
- 25:19Speaker 1: huge decision that they'll make if they have the number
- 25:21Speaker 1: one overall pick, if they getting a quarterback, because man,
- 25:25Speaker 1: they haven't DJ rich Gannon was the last time they've
- 25:28Speaker 1: had a big time quarterback like rich Gannon.
- 25:31Speaker 2: I mean just maybe one of their carr had one
- 25:34Speaker 2: or two good years in there, one or two good years.
- 25:37Speaker 2: I'm talking about big time quarterback.
- 25:38Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, like, so this is this is a
- 25:40Speaker 1: huge decision, and if you don't have a quarterback, you
- 25:43Speaker 1: don't have a chance.
- 25:44Speaker 2: And so they got to get this right.
- 25:45Speaker 1: So I'm sure Tom Brady's involvement will help them make
- 25:48Speaker 1: the decision on whichever quarterback they pick at the top
- 25:51Speaker 1: of the draft.
- 25:52Speaker 3: Yeah, that's going to be interesting. Man, Let's get to
- 25:55Speaker 3: this rookie draft. Last week, I mean, we at least
- 25:58Speaker 3: cut in a little bit, got one point off Rhett,
- 26:01Speaker 3: and he's still in a little bit of a runaway position.
- 26:04Speaker 3: Here we're gonna try and reel him in. Rehets in
- 26:06Speaker 3: first place. Here, we're battling behind him here, Buck today,
- 26:10Speaker 3: it looks like I believe I have the first pick,
- 26:13Speaker 3: So it's gonna go me and you then Rhett. So
- 26:15Speaker 3: Rhett has given his board his little rankings to Nobile,
- 26:18Speaker 3: so Nobill will throw his picks in the chat I'll
- 26:20Speaker 3: start us off. I'm gonna do what I what just
- 26:23Speaker 3: about all of us have done when we've had the
- 26:24Speaker 3: first overall pick. I'm gonna go Jaden and Daniels with
- 26:26Speaker 3: the first pick. I know they play Philly, but that
- 26:30Speaker 3: game is at home, and that is a rivalry game,
- 26:33Speaker 3: and uh, I think he'll I think he'll he'll acclimate
- 26:37Speaker 3: quite well there, even against that defense.
- 26:38Speaker 2: I'm gonna go Jayden Daniels with the first pick. Europe.
- 26:41Speaker 1: Okay, uh is this one where we got running back?
- 26:44Speaker 1: So is the two wide receivers?
- 26:45Speaker 2: You can do?
- 26:45Speaker 1: You can do, you can take. It's a whatever skill
- 26:48Speaker 1: player you can go. Right, I'm gonna take Okay, I'm
- 26:50Speaker 1: gonna take the offensive rookie of.
- 26:52Speaker 2: The brock Bowers.
- 26:53Speaker 3: Oh nice, Okay, No, Bill is going to pick for
- 26:58Speaker 3: Rhett here. He's got back to backer for Rhett. He's
- 27:03Speaker 3: gonna go betj excellent and he's gonna go lad McConkey.
- 27:09Speaker 2: What are we doing, neb you? What about that man
- 27:14Speaker 2: taking two wide receivers? I don't like that. DJ. Who'd
- 27:17Speaker 2: you take number one overall? Who's you got? I took
- 27:19Speaker 2: Jade Daniels, so you are up? Okay?
- 27:26Speaker 1: I need to take a quarterback at some point. I
- 27:29Speaker 1: guess I'm haav to take bow Knicks right now. I'm
- 27:31Speaker 1: gonna take bow Nicks right now with this pick.
- 27:33Speaker 2: Okay, you're going bow Nicks. I'll tell you what I'm
- 27:36Speaker 2: gonna do.
- 27:36Speaker 3: I'm gonna go with Uh with your namesake, because I
- 27:39Speaker 3: saw him up close. Bucky Irving went off last week,
- 27:41Speaker 3: so I'm gonna go Bucky Irving, and then I'm gonna
- 27:45Speaker 3: also come back with Uh.
- 27:48Speaker 2: Let's see who who.
- 27:49Speaker 3: Gosh, it's so hard to go with the Giants players
- 27:51Speaker 3: just because they're so bad, but I'm gonna have to
- 27:55Speaker 3: stick with you. They play the Falcons on the road,
- 27:56Speaker 3: I'll go Neighbors.
- 27:58Speaker 2: Okay, So when you go Neighbors, I'm gonna go Marvin Harris.
- 28:01Speaker 3: So hold out, you got you got Rhett No, No, yeah,
- 28:03Speaker 3: you're up. You're going Marvin Marvin.
- 28:05Speaker 2: Okay. Then Rehet's got his last pick. He's going Drake May.
- 28:12Speaker 2: There you have it.
- 28:13Speaker 3: So I've got Jaydon Daniels, Bucky Irving, and Uh Malik Neighbors.
- 28:19Speaker 3: Bucky is coming with Bowers, bo Nicks and Marvin Harrison Junior.
- 28:24Speaker 3: Rhett has Brian Thomas Junior, Lad McConkey and Drake May
- 28:30Speaker 3: So we'll see if we can cut into this lead
- 28:32Speaker 3: a little bit. We've run out of time to catch
- 28:34Speaker 3: him here, but hopefully we can. We can reel him in.
- 28:36Speaker 3: All right, Buck, that's gonna do it for us today.
- 28:38Speaker 3: We'll be back tomorrow with another fresh episode. We'll see
- 28:40Speaker 3: it right here on.
- 28:41Speaker 2: Move the sticks.
