- 0:00Welcome to fight my datak, a podcast that helps bridge, the
- 0:03gap between healthcare workers and First Responders and
- 0:06everything in between. I am so excited to share this
- 0:12episode with you guys. This is three of my clients in
- 0:15my last flight prep group. That just finish up.
- 0:18You will get to hear what they they learned out of the group.
- 0:22What they came in thinking they were going to learn and what
- 0:24they really got from it. I think you'll be surprised by
- 0:27some of their answers and I was even surprised on how much that
- 0:32they really supported each other and push each other along just
- 0:35as much as I did. And you'll get to hear a little
- 0:38bit about what we discuss, what we talked about.
- 0:40The Mindset My Philosophy in getting into flight and what
- 0:44were some of their common struggles.
- 0:45What did they think was easy? What did they think was hard
- 0:48about the process? And where some of them are
- 0:50individually in the process? I hope you guys enjoyed this
- 0:54episode. And without further Ado, here is
- 0:57my interview with my flight prep group.
- 1:05You guys, I'm so excited to have you guys on today.
- 1:09We had a little run through right before we started this and
- 1:14their most nervous about my first question.
- 1:16But I'm going to start it out with that today, we're going to
- 1:19be talking to a few people that are in my very first flight prep
- 1:23group together and I prepped, a lot of people to get into
- 1:29flight, a lot of nurses are ready to get into flight, but
- 1:33this was the first Oop, and I really wanted to do a group
- 1:37setting because what I realized was that everybody was having
- 1:40the same thoughts and feelings about prepping for flight and
- 1:44trying to get into it. And I love the idea of a group,
- 1:47because you could see that no matter how much experience or
- 1:51time that you've been a nurse, we're all having the same
- 1:54thoughts of not having enough time and not having enough
- 1:56experience. And so I'm going to just start
- 1:59out, I'll have you guys introduce yourselves and then
- 2:01we'll kind of go from there. Sounds good.
- 2:07So Bailey who wants to start first?
- 2:11I'll go purse. Hi everyone.
- 2:14My name is Bailey looking to get into flight and been an, ER,
- 2:19nurse for 5 years. Now, I have no, I see you
- 2:21experience that also have some PRN experience in mother baby,
- 2:26and I really enjoyed the group sessions that we've been having
- 2:29with Janessa and just learn a lot from her.
- 2:31And then from everyone else, in the group as well.
- 2:37My name is Vicki. I live in Florida and I am and I
- 2:42see trouble nurse. I have been a nurse for about
- 2:47seven and a half years and the ultimate goal is flight and also
- 2:52have really benefited a lot from this group and working with
- 2:56Janessa and hi, everyone. My name is Ryan.
- 3:03I live in the Seattle area prior to becoming a nurse as an EMT
- 3:06for about 10 years. I became a nurse for years ago,
- 3:10started off in the ER, then branched into ICU and critical
- 3:13care transport. And this has been a really
- 3:18awesome group Janessa has been incredible.
- 3:21Navigating, this process of researching Flay companies and
- 3:24applying for flight and I have nothing but great things to say
- 3:27about her and this group It's been a great experience.
- 3:31Okay, thank you guys for introducing yourselves.
- 3:34I know that this was like some of the one of the hardest
- 3:36questions, for some of you guys so he's just Gonna Get Easier
- 3:41from here. So let's talk about I first want
- 3:44to start, because when people start coaching with me, they
- 3:48often come in with one thing that they really want to work on
- 3:50and it for you guys that's trying to get into flight and
- 3:53navigating all of that. But for some people, it might be
- 3:55just like, up leveling or gaining a little bit more
- 3:58confidence and usually, what they get from it or the wretch.
- 4:01Results that they get from, it are sometimes very different
- 4:04than what they think going into it.
- 4:06So I'm curious where you guys, if any of you could speak on
- 4:09like what was it that one that you were hoping to get from the
- 4:11group and to like, what's really been, the byproduct of being a
- 4:16part of it for you and and maybe did you get something else,
- 4:20besides what you thought you were going to?
- 4:23Well, for me, I was really nervous coming in only having,
- 4:26ER, experience and everyone in the group has different
- 4:29experiences. Like, I know Ryan has a lot of
- 4:31pre-hospital experience, a lot of another nurses in the group
- 4:35had I see you experience so that made me feel lacking, but also
- 4:39just coming to the group, it made me see what I do have, you
- 4:43know, I have some different qualities and experiences at
- 4:45some of the other nurses don't have.
- 4:48And, you know, I'm valuable with what I can bring to the table.
- 4:51Despite, you know, the experiences that I Don't have.
- 4:54So just learning to highlight and see what I can bring to the
- 4:58table. Yeah, and for you Bailey to, we
- 5:03talked a lot about comparing and in fact, like our last session
- 5:06together, it was like you said, hey, I feel like I'm running
- 5:08this marathon, and I see sometimes other people speeding
- 5:12up, and getting there before me or interviewing for me.
- 5:15And sometimes I let that get in my head but I realized like,
- 5:18wait, I'm going to finish this Marathon.
- 5:20No matter what at my own pace at my own speed.
- 5:24I'm not going to give up so interesting.
- 5:27Like how being a part of the group?
- 5:28Actually, kind of helped you get out of it.
- 5:30Comparison. It did especially when we talked
- 5:35about slowing down a little bit. Like I was comparing it to I
- 5:37like to run so I was comparing like getting into flight to like
- 5:41running a marathon. Like I'm still going to get
- 5:42there at the end but I don't have to scramble.
- 5:45I don't have to you know try to add this that and the other to
- 5:48my resume because I was going through my EMT program and I was
- 5:53scrambling to get it done and just because I want to be in
- 5:56flight so badly and I just wanted to do it as quick as
- 5:59possible, but It was making me exhausted bike every day that I
- 6:03wasn't working. I was doing like EMS, clinicals,
- 6:06or setting for this or that certification.
- 6:08And I was just feeling worn out and this last week I've really
- 6:13took the time to rest and not be scrambling so much and honestly
- 6:17I think just having a little bit of time to relax and breathe a
- 6:21little bit. That's going to help me get to
- 6:23the Finish Line. The way they finished, not not
- 6:27necessarily quicker but just feeling better.
- 6:30The person in general, both work-life balance, and trying to
- 6:34apply adding all those things into the mix, just a better
- 6:37balance, and I just feel a lot better about it.
- 6:39That's great. Because we we also talked about
- 6:41with you like, no matter what you're going to get there.
- 6:45And so we can choose to scramble and hustle and work hard, like,
- 6:50do all of these things and you're going to get there or we
- 6:53can choose to, like, step back and say, hey, wait, let's
- 6:56balance it all out, because we're going to get there.
- 6:57Anyway, what's the way that feels really good for me.
- 7:01And just practicing that for you this week.
- 7:03What's kind of been the result of doing that for you?
- 7:05Do you think Honestly, just feel less stressed.
- 7:10I just feel like a weight lifted off my chest instead of spending
- 7:13hours a day studying, I did what we talked about, like I'm just
- 7:16going to dedicate one hour this morning to studying, and then
- 7:19I'm just going to spend the rest of my days off do, and what I
- 7:21need to do, you know, spending time with family, cleaning, the
- 7:25house, whatever. And that's not something I
- 7:28expected to get from the group, but honestly, it's helped me so
- 7:31much. Yeah, great, great.
- 7:35Yeah, I think for me, I I think I expected to get out some more
- 7:44or less Clarity when joining the group because I was having a lot
- 7:50of thoughts of self-doubt. I was having a lot of, in my do.
- 7:55I have enough experience have the things that I've done enough
- 7:58to be hired and I think I got out from the group.
- 8:02Is that really? I just am in my own head?
- 8:04Just like we are really all in her own head and the things that
- 8:07I'm thinking about myself or thinking about my progress,
- 8:11everyone else was also thinking about and it kind of just puts
- 8:14you at ease and and like you said, like We're going to get
- 8:20there when we're supposed to get there in or time and with not
- 8:24like a competition or a race with anybody.
- 8:26And if anything I felt very supported and it's helped me
- 8:32relax, it's really helped me relax because I'm like oh it's
- 8:35not just me like I can chill out for a little bit because I tend
- 8:39to get in my head and stress out and add everything on my plate
- 8:43that I don't need to add on my plate.
- 8:45Like it's not necessary because of experience.
- 8:48I have and the quality, the skills that I have, and the
- 8:52person that I am is enough for her flight.
- 8:55Yeah, yeah, great. Thanks for sharing that.
- 9:01And I think I really wasn't expecting to apply for jobs
- 9:06quite yet. When I started the group that
- 9:09was I thought I just wanted to find.
- 9:12I don't do. Learn more about flight.
- 9:13Nursing to prepare for it more. I felt I still had some things I
- 9:17need to do. I know I'm really strong Canada
- 9:19on paper Yar. I see you could hook are
- 9:22transporting a mess experience, but I really questioned my
- 9:26ability to do the job. I questioned if I could do it, I
- 9:29just felt I needed more. Variants.
- 9:31I have my Cen but I don't have my CCRN yet, so I felt I needed
- 9:35that. And through this group, I've
- 9:40learned that mindset is absolutely everything.
- 9:42It is so keen and you can be nervous and successful and it is
- 9:47so liberating to learn that. It's so freeing to know that
- 9:52that more experience doesn't necessarily make you a better
- 9:55candidate. That, you know, I just came to
- 9:59the realization that I spend another five years or more like
- 10:0210 years getting experience and still not feel ready.
- 10:05That it's just time to jump in and do it.
- 10:09And trust myself to believe in myself that I've done hard
- 10:12things before and I can do hard things again.
- 10:15And you know, even if I'm not successful the first time you
- 10:18don't, if I don't get the first job, I play for whatever I'll be
- 10:21successful if I trust myself. So that was really what I got
- 10:26from this group that's you know it really motivated me to start
- 10:29applying for jobs. Jobs and I don't think I would
- 10:32have applied for jobs yet. If it wasn't for this group, I'm
- 10:36really don't think I would have it just gave me that extra push
- 10:39that extra motivation. Yeah.
- 10:42And what would you say because that is what I hear from a lot
- 10:44of people like, okay, wait I say, what's your timeline for
- 10:47applying and they're like, well probably a year or two because I
- 10:51want to feel better about this or this or time or experience.
- 10:54Like what would you say to those people who kind of have that in
- 10:57their mind right now listening to this?
- 11:01Mindset is everything. Mine says absolutely everything.
- 11:04And I can recall like a year ago like when I first really
- 11:09started, considering flight in her saying, I had a lunch,
- 11:13really close friend who was a firefighter and he told me to
- 11:17just start applying just start doing it.
- 11:19And firefighting is similar in a way to flight nursing, and that
- 11:24there's a lot of applicants for generally, not that many
- 11:27positions. And I just like, really In my
- 11:31experience, like I'm not ready. Like do I have enough experience
- 11:34and, you know, through that from, from now, from then to,
- 11:38now, I can really see. It's not about experiences about
- 11:41mindset and I've seen that other people like that mindset, like I
- 11:45can do this, just go for it. And I finally threw this group
- 11:49started believing myself that more experience is not going to
- 11:52make me a better flight nurse really that at this point.
- 11:56I mean, I have EMS experience, lots of hummus experience VR
- 11:59experience. I see you.
- 12:01And it's Critical Care transport experience.
- 12:03And it's not about experienced about trusting yourself.
- 12:07It's about knowing that regardless of how much
- 12:10experience you have, they're going to be situations that you
- 12:12face that. It's the first time you've
- 12:14experienced it, you know, you're going to feel uncomfortable but
- 12:17you know that even in these stressful situations that you
- 12:21can trust your gut and that you can get through it.
- 12:24So, I think for me, just that belief that I've done hard
- 12:28things before starting in the ER, was incredibly hard.
- 12:32And then starting as a brand new nurse in the, ER, is it's a hard
- 12:35place to start and then covid happened.
- 12:37I'd only been a nurse for a year, but I know that if I can
- 12:41get through that, if I can get through that challenge, I can
- 12:44get through anything and in other challenges, too.
- 12:46So it's just that, that mindset that belief in yourself.
- 12:49Trusting yourself. Yeah.
- 12:52And we talked about this yesterday, They are a little bit
- 12:54too Ryan that because you worked so much on this before.
- 12:59When you step into this role as a flight nurse, when you get the
- 13:02job, it's going to be easier for you to overcome that part of you
- 13:05already because I do think a lot of people think.
- 13:09Well once I get there, it's just going to be great.
- 13:13The grass is greener. On the other side, I'm going to
- 13:15have the job finally. But that's not necessarily the
- 13:18truth, the actual work begins after you get the job and so
- 13:23because Able to like bring your mind there already that hurdle
- 13:27for you is going to be less for you to climb.
- 13:29Once you get there what have been like your thoughts on that
- 13:31since we talked about that yesterday?
- 13:35Yeah, I can absolutely see that. I mean, I think this application
- 13:39process going through this. It's really a test of how much
- 13:41you want it because flight is I'm really going to know.
- 13:45It's unlike any other job. It's similar to EMS but it's
- 13:48different, it's very unique. It's very, it requires a lot of
- 13:52sacrifices, it's very different from other jobs, so I had to in
- 13:57my taste like I had to consider moving relocating and just
- 14:03spending time away from family and And there's a lot of things
- 14:06I had to consider and I know I had to go there.
- 14:10I know this is hard process and I know becoming a flight nurse
- 14:13has a very hard process. Everyone has told me that, but I
- 14:17had to leave in myself that, that I can do it.
- 14:21And that I faced our jumps before and that I absolutely can
- 14:25do it. And, you know, I know, it's just
- 14:28a matter of time until I get hired.
- 14:29I think it would be very soon, but I know that when that
- 14:33happened when I get that opportunity, I'll be able to do
- 14:35it, it's really all about mindset.
- 14:38And, you know, I felt going into the process that I was a strong
- 14:41applicant on paper, but I just yeah, I question.
- 14:43If I can do it and now I even though I haven't started yet, I
- 14:47don't push it anymore. Yeah, because I know I believe
- 14:50in myself that if I can get this far that I can be an awesome
- 14:53planers, there's no doubt about it.
- 14:55Yeah, I'd love for you guys to share.
- 14:57Like we talked a lot about mindset and thought work.
- 14:59I'd love for you guys to share some thoughts that have really
- 15:02like helped you re ground yourself in this.
- 15:05Process of prepping and really applying and going through all
- 15:08of the things that you guys have gone through.
- 15:10Like what were some of the thoughts that our listeners can
- 15:12glean on or borrow or take for themselves at you kind of went
- 15:15back to My thoughts have changed a little bit throughout the
- 15:21process. Like, my first thought when I
- 15:23first started this, I can do this.
- 15:25I know I can do it, you know, and then I thought was, you
- 15:28know, my time will come and then now my thighs.
- 15:32I know I'm going to get there when that's going to be, I'm not
- 15:35sure. But I know that I will be there
- 15:37and so your thoughts will kind of change throughout the
- 15:40process, and that's fine. But then also just getting used
- 15:44to being uncomfortable, getting comfortable with being
- 15:46uncomfortable. Because I've applied for three
- 15:50different positions. When the first one said will get
- 15:53back with me when you have your EMT.
- 15:55The second one was like, get back with me when you have your
- 15:57Advanced EMT. The third one, I'm pop word
- 16:00said. Sorry, you know, we gave this to
- 16:03an internal applicant is and just like, constantly reaching
- 16:06out to people being denied, it's going to happen and just being
- 16:10being okay with being uncomfortable because that's
- 16:12part of the process. Yeah.
- 16:14And I love that because, you know, I think a lot of people
- 16:17and I think there's probably probably times you felt like
- 16:19that too. We're either they get a no, or
- 16:22they get stopped because someone gets filled it or like those
- 16:24things that happen to you and then people make that mean
- 16:27something about themselves and that's what stops them from
- 16:30continuing on in the race. Exactly, I could have chosen to
- 16:33stop and say, I'm not good enough but I said, okay my jobs
- 16:37out there somewhere. I just have to go get it.
- 16:40Yeah, yeah, thank you for sharing that the great thoughts
- 16:44and I love that you mentioned like throughout the process.
- 16:48What your go-to thought is going to change, it has to, it has to
- 16:51evolve as you're evolving in it. Absolutely.
- 16:57I think that I was going to say something similar to Bailey.
- 17:00Cuz yeah, my thoughts have changed.
- 17:03Then the beginning, all the way to now, and they just
- 17:06consistently changed for him. Like, I do hard things to
- 17:12everything. I've done has gotten me here.
- 17:14I can accomplish anything and it really is I think it's what
- 17:20you're aligning with that, that point in time.
- 17:22What's going on? Like, not just in regards to
- 17:26flight, but in your life is gonna affect your thought, Alan,
- 17:30so mindset, my definitely has changed, but all all had been
- 17:34helpful for me. Yeah.
- 17:37For sure. Yeah.
- 17:39And I can actor that this can be a discouraging process.
- 17:43I remember like reaching one point where I become really
- 17:46comfortable to getting hurt. Come like really close to
- 17:49getting my first job. My first, I'd gone through this
- 17:53application process and I know I come very close to getting the
- 17:57job. But in the end I didn't get it
- 18:03and I got the nicest rejection letter.
- 18:05I've ever gotten but I didn't get the job.
- 18:07So It was discouraging because I had applied for multiple jobs
- 18:12and I had been the only one that had reached out to me and I'd
- 18:18reached out to recruiters and heard, absolutely nothing and I
- 18:22just really started questioning if I did get hired.
- 18:27And then another company reach out to me.
- 18:29So and I just had a second interview of them yesterday so
- 18:35it was it was very can be, so discouraging and your thoughts
- 18:39definitely change throughout the process.
- 18:42It's yeah, it's definitely it's all about mindset, really,
- 18:46because it's so hard when you hear that silence.
- 18:50Yeah, and I'm curious for you Ryan since you did that first
- 18:53interview and now, looking back at it from now, interviewing,
- 18:57with another company and feeling really good about it.
- 19:00What did actually having that first interview teach you?
- 19:05I think, overall, my first interview was over all good, it
- 19:09was overall, good interview, but in that interview, the real me
- 19:12didn't come out. The, real Ryan didn't come out
- 19:15and in the interview I had yesterday, I thought the real
- 19:18Ryan came out. The real me, I was, it was, it
- 19:24was just very real, like what I value and some of the person I
- 19:28am it really, really came out. So I love that and I'd love for
- 19:33you guys to touch on because I literally just got off of the
- 19:36phone with someone who's interested in prepping for
- 19:39flight. But he told me, you know, I
- 19:43don't want to put an application because I'm nervous to talk
- 19:46about my time and my experience in the interview and My
- 19:49Philosophy is very different and we talked about this a lot in
- 19:53prepping for it when it when we're in the interview, they've
- 19:56already brought you there because of your time and
- 19:58experience. So what we want to show them is
- 20:00Who we are, what we value, what kind of team player that we are.
- 20:04So, I'm interested on like now that you guys have gone through
- 20:07all that the prep for it, what are your thoughts about time and
- 20:10experience? Because that's the number one
- 20:12thing objection. I hear from people about
- 20:14applying So, I think that I can speak to that, like, I think I
- 20:20came in not with this with this group because I have been having
- 20:23one-on-one sessions with Janessa prior, but I feel like I came in
- 20:28very avoid it. Like, this is what I want to do.
- 20:30This is what my goal is, flight nursing, but I don't feel like
- 20:33I'm ready. I need all of these things.
- 20:36I went to EMT school. Janessa was like, you don't
- 20:38really have to get your paramedic, but if that's what
- 20:40you want to do is like, no, I'm gonna do it.
- 20:41And I felt like I did all these things and I'm not upset that I
- 20:44did it because I have my paramedic now and ever.
- 20:46But I feel like I am at the end of things.
- 20:50Maybe it was really avoiding, because I wasn't satisfied with
- 20:54who I was and my skills, even though that was plenty enough.
- 20:59And I think that coming into this, I really learned that
- 21:05like, it doesn't, it really doesn't matter.
- 21:07Like if you could have like less than the time that they are
- 21:11really prefering, but it's like a preference, it doesn't
- 21:15necessarily mean that Going to take you out of the loop or who
- 21:21might get that position or not. And if you're a great nurse
- 21:26they're going to be able to tell that by you and your answers and
- 21:30how you project yourself. Like you can tell somebody who's
- 21:33authentic and who's genuine and you can read you can read
- 21:36somebody really well when they're being, you know, their
- 21:38true selves. And if somebody I feel like
- 21:41companies maybe they're looking for somebody who is teachable
- 21:44with a little bit less experience but They have a great
- 21:48attitude, you know, and you can tell that they have a great
- 21:49attitude, so they're going to be someone, they're going to be
- 21:52able to be taught well and and be a good fit for the company.
- 21:55So I think that, I probably was one of those people that was
- 21:59like, no, no, I don't have enough experience, because I
- 22:02think I've had very many conversations with you.
- 22:04Like you really don't need. All of this is if this is really
- 22:08necessary like no, it's absolutely necessary.
- 22:10I need to do this because I they're not going to hire me.
- 22:13Like I want to present myself a certain way but as We've gone to
- 22:16the group and through our one-on-one sessions like I
- 22:19really become more. Okay.
- 22:22With myself more confident like I am a great nurse and even like
- 22:27I have three coming on three years of I see you experience
- 22:30and they say a company needs five like I feel like I'm going
- 22:33to still be applying to those companies because I myself am
- 22:37worth it. And I know that that the love me
- 22:39because I'm awesome. You love that realization.
- 22:45Nick. Yeah, I don't think you'll ever
- 22:48feel 100% ready and you just have to go for it and it's okay
- 22:54to doubt yourself. But with time, I feel I've
- 22:58learned to trust myself and learn to step into my weaknesses
- 23:01and my strengths. And that's really important.
- 23:05So remember the first job that I interviewed for I actually I
- 23:10have four years of nursing experience and they required
- 23:12five, but they still interviewed me, they still brought me to the
- 23:15Table and even though it ultimately didn't get that job,
- 23:18I still consider that a win in a way.
- 23:21It is a win. So I'm just like, I was
- 23:23surprised like that the fact that they required five years
- 23:26experience and I know I didn't have it.
- 23:29The fact that even apply for the job surprise me because I
- 23:31finally just trust myself. Like okay, so I have a really
- 23:34unique mix of experience pric. You Critical Care transport, 10
- 23:38years of EMS, maybe the interviewing able to consider me
- 23:42and I'm so glad I did even though I didn't ultimately We
- 23:45get the job. I'm so glad that I trust myself
- 23:49in plaid. Yeah, I love that because II,
- 23:53you know, I teach this and I taught this in the group is, I
- 23:56want you guys to treat applications and companies like
- 23:58speed dating. We would never just be like,
- 24:01that's the person we want to marry by just dating one person.
- 24:03I mean, I know some people do that, so, I'm not saying it's
- 24:06impossible, but for flight. I like to compare it to that
- 24:09like we want to speed date a bunch of people.
- 24:11We want to speed date a bunch of companies.
- 24:13We're not saying yes to them by applying and we're not Saying
- 24:15yes by even showing up at the interview we're just trying to
- 24:18see if we're a good fit for them and if they're a good fit for us
- 24:21and US allowing ourselves to be able to put ourselves out there,
- 24:24both in applications and interviews, gives us a better
- 24:27idea of what we really want. And often times our number one
- 24:31is and what we choose even if they offer it to us, sometimes
- 24:34it's our number 5. And so that is what I recommend
- 24:37and I love that you guys have been open to being able to do
- 24:40that. Both in applications and
- 24:41interviews. One other question I want to ask
- 24:45Ask you guys is now going through the whole process of
- 24:48prepping and everything that comes along with it, the
- 24:52psychosocial questions, and the case scenarios.
- 24:54And just the mindset that we really worked on in the group,
- 24:57what's been easier than you? Thought it would be and what's
- 25:00been harder than you thought it would be.
- 25:04I honestly thought this scenario situations that we went through
- 25:08was easier than I thought it was going to be a, you would say,
- 25:12okay, next week we're doing scenarios and I was getting so
- 25:15nervous. But when it actually came to us,
- 25:17like, I know this stuff, I know how to take care of patients.
- 25:20I've done this for five years, like I know what I'm doing so
- 25:24that was easier than I thought it was going to be.
- 25:27Yeah. And I'm curious for you Bailey.
- 25:30Like how do you feel now stepping to an interview doing a
- 25:32case scenario? Not When it's going to be.
- 25:36I feel more confident now that we did some examples with the
- 25:40coaching so just going back to my ABCs like know what I'm
- 25:44supposed to do. I mean, I feel like I can just
- 25:47pull from my own experiences with patients and just go
- 25:51through the scenarios as if I was you know taking care of this
- 25:53person in the ER like I do every day.
- 25:56Yeah. Yeah.
- 25:58And you rocked it. You are the game you're not
- 26:00Karis. They're just honestly asking
- 26:02like what would you do with this patient?
- 26:05Yes. And And what's funny about that
- 26:07is that, you know, I do hear that all the all the time as I'm
- 26:10coaching people because they're like, well, I'm afraid my
- 26:12patients going to die and then I say, well, then what?
- 26:15And they're like, well, then I would back them.
- 26:17And then I'm like, and then what?
- 26:18And then they're like, then we'd start CPR, and then I'd say,
- 26:20then went, and it's like, we know what to do.
- 26:23Even the worst case scenario, our patient codes, we know what
- 26:26to do. And so it's just like stepping
- 26:28bag zooming out looking at the bigger picture, and I really do
- 26:33hope that you feel confident now going into it.
- 26:35Case scenario for an interview because you did really.
- 26:37Well you are a guinea pig for our first one.
- 26:40So you did really was we were going through those.
- 26:43Thank you. I think the hardest thing has
- 26:48been like getting dealing with our own my own brain, at least
- 26:55for me like Like my brain wants to put the wise that the butts
- 27:02than anything - and it's like actually being being able to
- 27:05push it away and like ignore it. I think that's really been like
- 27:09the hardest thing is dealing with your own self place for me.
- 27:14Yeah, because myself is crazy, my head, what's been like one of
- 27:19the easier things that, that surprised you about anything
- 27:23that you've learned. Um, I think that the probably
- 27:30the easiest thing for me has been the ability to be
- 27:33vulnerable and open about how I'm feeling and what I think
- 27:38about myself or my skill set or anything like really that just
- 27:43even talking in the group. I think that's been probably
- 27:45been me. The easiest is been letting my
- 27:48guard down and just being open to the whole process and
- 27:52connecting with people. Yeah.
- 27:56Yeah. Yeah I can Echo that I was a
- 28:03little nervous about the case scenarios to I have EMS
- 28:07experience. I'm kind of used to case
- 28:08scenarios to some extent but still you never know what
- 28:11they're going to ask. And I remember in my first
- 28:14interview, they asked some pretty crate just a crazy
- 28:17scenario so you just kind of never know but I think it was
- 28:21the the scenarios and the interviews in general were
- 28:23easier than I was expecting. What was harder was actually
- 28:28pushing the send button. I'm from applications.
- 28:32So I remember when I submitted my first applications, I felt
- 28:37sick to my stomach. Like, I felt bad.
- 28:39I felt like, oh my gosh, I could get this job.
- 28:43My life could change dramatically.
- 28:45Am I ready for this? Like, I really had second
- 28:48thoughts. It was so hard to push the send
- 28:50button so hard, and there's so much silence in this process to,
- 28:56it's really unique. You know, I think we're used to
- 29:00Working in nursing, or if we submit an application we hear
- 29:02back really quickly. But in Flight, I think of a plan
- 29:07for six or seven jobs. I've only heard back from 2001,
- 29:10the rest is just silence, so it's just such a like it's that
- 29:15that silence is so hard. Yeah and and we talked about
- 29:20this like early on to that it is so different like you said,
- 29:23especially as nurses who have experienced and are usually used
- 29:26to pushing the send button and managers reaching out to us
- 29:28right away and I have this philosophy that flight companies
- 29:32really want the people who really want it and it's the
- 29:36people who are not okay with the silence.
- 29:38It's the ones who reach out a little bit more and are kind of
- 29:41like, staying on top of their own process and not letting the
- 29:44nose or the silence mean, anything about them.
- 29:46Those are the ones that the ultimately they want.
- 29:48What to bring to the interviews. And so my question for you guys
- 29:54is or I guess specifically for you Ryan since you have been
- 29:57brought to the interview now how do you feel like the group
- 30:01prepped you to actually sit in that seat?
- 30:07I feel the group overall was great preparation because I
- 30:12could really focus on thinking about what's important for
- 30:15flights. So, I know in group in the our
- 30:18group, we talked about, you know, framing questions and this
- 30:22is important in flight because just just thinking about that,
- 30:24bringing it all back and it just really is important for that
- 30:27mindset for, you know, whatever case scenario, whatever
- 30:32interview question just thinking, like, how does this
- 30:33apply to flight? Why are there asking that?
- 30:36How is this apple to my past experience?
- 30:39How can I apply this? In my case to work in the
- 30:40ambulance or to working in the ER or the ICU?
- 30:45So I think that that was just really critical being able to
- 30:50understand what's important in flights and Like all the
- 30:56questions we talked about in everything we talked about in
- 31:00group, all the practice questions and everything was
- 31:02great preparation. In the case study the case
- 31:05scenario was great preparation to because I know if I hadn't
- 31:10done that preparation I would have missed things but going
- 31:12into it I was very confident. I knew like what to say and I
- 31:19knew what was important. I knew what they were looking
- 31:21for. Yeah.
- 31:22So think that was really key. And, and Vicki and Bailey.
- 31:28I'm curious for you guys because you will be sitting in those
- 31:32seats those interview seats. How do you feel about the
- 31:35preparation and what are your thoughts?
- 31:37Now, when you do go into those interviews, I just want to try
- 31:41to show who I am as a person and because they can read my
- 31:45experience on the resume right in front of them.
- 31:48I don't need to explain, you know, everything that I've done
- 31:51or all my certifications because they can see that I just Want to
- 31:54try to show who I am as a person, not with generic answers
- 31:59but like, just, I want them to really get to know who I am and
- 32:03just Ryan, giving his examples of his experiences with the
- 32:06interview has been helpful to me.
- 32:08It lets me know a little bit more what to expect.
- 32:10So I think Ryan for sharing his experiences with them.
- 32:13Yeah, it's funny because in the group, you guys think that I'm
- 32:16going to be the one giving you guys value.
- 32:19But the group is, you guys are all giving each other value.
- 32:22Absolutely. And I've seen everybody in the
- 32:24group, Just grow more confident. Yeah.
- 32:29Confidence is everything right? Yeah, but that do whatever.
- 32:34Absolutely Vicki. What's like your thoughts about
- 32:38this group and the content? And the things that we talked
- 32:41about for prepping, like, how are you now feeling about?
- 32:43When you get the opportunity to sit in that seat?
- 32:46I think that when I do sit for an interview, I'll be pretty
- 32:50prepared because of the group, you know, not.
- 32:53We went over like the scenarios but also, you know, the session
- 32:56with Sean that was really helpful.
- 32:59Well, you know the tutor to help us like really get the hold of
- 33:03what he was teaching at day, which was ventilators and it
- 33:05really did help also how to answer the interview questions
- 33:10like authentically and not so robotically, it's really
- 33:15something that you you work with us on and I think it's helpful
- 33:19because it really does show you your answer versus what you
- 33:22think they want to hear and it kind of weeds out other
- 33:25applicants and shows you as more authentic.
- 33:28So I know that whenever I do support Of you are able, I'll be
- 33:31ready and, and a title because of, you know, you're working
- 33:34with the group. And I also agree with Bailey,
- 33:36like I've seen everybody's confidence and demeanors just
- 33:40like be very strong and up there, especially Ryan, you
- 33:44know, like our session on Wednesday.
- 33:47Ryan was like, yeah, I got these, like I have it.
- 33:50I was like, yeah. It was awesome and it's been
- 33:54great to see. See that from from everybody.
- 33:58Yeah, because Ryan, how do you think now looking back on your
- 34:02your to interviews with this company?
- 34:05Like having that level of competence?
- 34:07How do you think that that helped you?
- 34:12I think it really just showed me that I can do it.
- 34:16And when I do start, this job, when I do become a flight nurse
- 34:20that I can do it, I can be successful because I don't know.
- 34:24I was able to show them who I really am what I value.
- 34:29And really if I can do that under stress in an interview, I
- 34:34can do it in the job. I can do that anywhere that that
- 34:37potential is there. And, you know, I absolutely
- 34:41great Bailey. I think everyone in this group
- 34:43has grown in confidence. It's been such a supportive
- 34:45group. I've really enjoyed her
- 34:46sessions, and I just think it's great.
- 34:49It's been great preparation for flight.
- 34:52And it just the most important thing though is mindset is
- 34:54everything and that's something that I really got from this
- 34:57group. It's Sookie, it's not taking
- 34:59more classes. It's not doing more things to
- 35:02prepare yourself. It's early mindset.
- 35:04Yeah, because what I noticed when people come to me, they
- 35:07could have them. Minimum amount or 15 to 20 years
- 35:10and it's the same thought that they're stuck on.
- 35:13And so I wanted to ask you guys for anyway, I'm getting ready to
- 35:17start a second cohort. So for anyone who is thinking
- 35:22about prepping for flight or joining the next group or just
- 35:25like coaching in general, with My Philosophy I know you guys
- 35:29had some reservations obviously before we started to what is it
- 35:33that you would want to share to those people who are kind of
- 35:38nervous? About doing prep for it with me
- 35:40because do it, like, just do it invest in yourself because
- 35:46that's your biggest investment is yourself and preparing for
- 35:49yourself, but whatever, whatever it takes, you know, and when
- 35:53you're in a group, the progress is infectious.
- 35:57So somebody else's progress is infectious somebody else's
- 36:00attitude and them coming stronger within himself, all of
- 36:04that is infectious. I feel like I grew stronger and
- 36:07more confident. Aunt, when Bailey, who's
- 36:10stronger more confident, when Ryan was like, I'm it I was
- 36:13like, bro, me too. Like it's great, you know, and I
- 36:17think that it's a good good investment in your future career
- 36:22and in your current career to like, I think that it's
- 36:26definitely something that's been very, very helpful and can only
- 36:28benefit you from here forward. So it's definitely, they take
- 36:33the leap and just do it. Yeah.
- 36:39Next, The Awkward. The silent.
- 36:42Don't make a noise. Yeah, I agree with you Vicky.
- 36:47Yes, just seeing everybody else's confidence Blossom.
- 36:52It just makes you feel like, yes, I can do this too.
- 36:55And then also, I think you'll get all the questions that you
- 36:57have going into quite answered. But then you may gain something
- 37:01out of the experience that you wasn't expecting.
- 37:04Like for me, I realized that I need to slow down a little bit
- 37:07to make this happen. And that was something that I
- 37:10wasn't expecting to get out of the group.
- 37:12But it's just a little nugget. I came away with that.
- 37:14Has really helped me tremendously.
- 37:17Yeah, thanks for sharing that Bailey.
- 37:21Yeah, I think what I learned is that this group isn't really
- 37:25just about flight nursing. It's about confidence about
- 37:29mindsets about so much more. So, you can take these skills
- 37:33and apply them to whatever area in your life.
- 37:36And I just think everyone's on their own timeline.
- 37:38There's things that people need to consider.
- 37:41It might not be the right time for, you know, someone to apply
- 37:45for everyone's on their own timeline.
- 37:48But there's never a perfect The play for flight if you want to
- 37:52do it. And I say, if you meet the
- 37:54minimum requirements, go for it. No excuses, just go for it.
- 37:57If you feel like you want to do this, if you feel like this is a
- 38:00good fit, just go for it. And even if you don't get the
- 38:04first job or the first few jobs you, apply for you'll learn more
- 38:08about yourself in the process and it will be worth it.
- 38:12Yeah, I love that. And and this might be a similar
- 38:15question for you guys. But when I found life coaching,
- 38:19I was like, what is this life coaching thing?
- 38:22Like what is this about? But I'm curious because I need
- 38:26some work-life balance in my life.
- 38:27I'm working these long shifts and I can't leave work at home
- 38:32when I'm with my family, and I want that.
- 38:34And when I hired my first life coach, like, Amazing how things
- 38:39changed for me? So coaching in general?
- 38:42I mean like My Philosophy really is a focus on who you are now
- 38:45and where you want to be and I'm interested in for you guys.
- 38:49Like what were maybe your thoughts about life, coaching me
- 38:52for and what have you really learned about it for yourself?
- 38:55What have you gotten out of it? I think.
- 39:00Okay. So I wanted to answer first
- 39:02because I have been working with you for a while, aside from the
- 39:06group and I do I had at that time, been a nurse.
- 39:11I think. Had been like maybe five years
- 39:13and now I'm like, going on eight years.
- 39:15So or seven and a half, I don't know.
- 39:17But I Was had a situation that happened in my career.
- 39:23I lost my job and it made me feel very lack of confidence in
- 39:28my skills and who I was as a nurse.
- 39:30And I knew that my goal was flight nursing.
- 39:34And when this happened to me, I was like, how will I ever get to
- 39:37where I want to get to and I came across your Instagram and I
- 39:42started following you and all your posts are really like
- 39:45resonating with me. They're really speaking to me
- 39:48and I didn't even even realize just how much I needed the
- 39:52extra, not help but yes help but like boost in my own like
- 40:00Confidence and what I already have, you know, that I just my
- 40:03brain just push back and was like, you're not worth it, you
- 40:06can't do it. Giving me all these reasons why
- 40:09I couldn't do what I wanted to do, or even just a simple as
- 40:13getting a different job. Other than, you know, flight
- 40:16because I had lost my job. And I, when I started working
- 40:20with you, I realized so many issues about myself that I was
- 40:24doing to myself my brain. You know, like we were very
- 40:28uncomfortable, is there any You know, you like to make me
- 40:32uncomfortable but it was in those moments.
- 40:35But I like learned a lot about myself and it helped me not just
- 40:41for my career, but even in my relationship, you know, my
- 40:45marriage, and how I handle things in the household, and,
- 40:49you know, being a travel nurse as well as it's very difficult
- 40:52to be leaving home, and for certain periods of time, and I
- 40:57didn't even realize that I really needed so much coaching.
- 40:59And now I'm like I don't ever want you to leave, please, so
- 41:05done that. Yeah, and I've loved working
- 41:08with you to Vicki and it's also the reason why I have my own
- 41:11coach every week because we can't get clarity on our own.
- 41:14It's, it's really helping us someone sort through our
- 41:17thoughts with us and a non-biased way so that we can
- 41:19really see it for how it is. Yeah, Shamar Balian Ryan.
- 41:28Do you guys have anything that you want to share about that?
- 41:32I don't think I really had any expectations because you know,
- 41:36have never worked with the last coach before I just kind of
- 41:40jumping in and seeing where it goes.
- 41:42But I've learned so much about myself, you've asked us hard
- 41:45questions like why is she asking me this?
- 41:47But you force us to face what it is that we need to face and just
- 41:53getting things out of the session that I didn't know that
- 41:56I needed. Yeah.
- 41:57And I love like even if it was at the end for you to just like
- 42:00real life, Is like running at your own pace and actually like
- 42:03slowing down is going to help you speed up in the end because
- 42:06it really will absolutely 100%. Yeah.
- 42:10And just like the realization that you're going to get there.
- 42:12No matter what you can do it this way.
- 42:13We can do it that way, but this is the way that feels better for
- 42:16you. Yes.
- 42:17And I didn't know I needed that. Yeah.
- 42:20Yeah, awesome. Yeah, and I think the prior to
- 42:25starting this group, prior starting coaching I've been
- 42:28following Janessa on Instagram for several months and I just I
- 42:32really enjoyed this podcast, but I just wondered is life coaching
- 42:35for me. Is it worth it?
- 42:37Is it really going to help me? And I found it's incredibly
- 42:40helpful in putting things into perspective, focusing on your
- 42:43goals and really clarifying what's important to you.
- 42:47And I think the results all depend on the amount of work,
- 42:50the amount of time you're willing to put into the process,
- 42:52it's not just attending the sessions, the real work happens
- 42:56after the sessions where you really start to think about
- 42:59things considered things process things.
- 43:01There's so much of that work that happens after the sessions
- 43:05and I think that's really where the progress happens, really?
- 43:08Yeah, I love that. You said that because that is
- 43:10when you can get the most out of it is like putting it to play
- 43:15like getting what you came for and Then utilizing it in your
- 43:18real life. Like that's how the coaching
- 43:20really helps. Last question for you guys.
- 43:24Is there a piece of advice that maybe you've gotten along the
- 43:29way? That is really helped you get to
- 43:32this pivotal moment for you or not.
- 43:35Even that maybe even a piece of advice or quote or a thought
- 43:40that is going to help you get to where you want to be next.
- 43:45I think a piece of advice I would like to give is don't let
- 43:53somebody else to find you. Like you are your own person and
- 43:58your experiences bring you as much value as a next person, and
- 44:05anybody who's trying to say otherwise or sending your way
- 44:08is, it's just like a roadblock meant to you to work through,
- 44:11you know? So, just don't let anyone to
- 44:14find you if On something work towards it and don't listen to
- 44:17anything else other than you your brain.
- 44:20Telling you, go, go, go, go, go. Until you get to that point, you
- 44:23know? Yeah, love that.
- 44:25Thanks for sharing that. Honestly black Grand, I've been
- 44:33following your Instagram and listen to the podcast and the it
- 44:36was one Post in particular that you had posted.
- 44:39That made me say, okay, I'm going to do this.
- 44:41It was, I don't remember exactly what it said, but it's something
- 44:45like if there's not a seat at the table, you create your own,
- 44:51something like that, you create your own table.
- 44:53So, basically, just Just go after it, you're not going to
- 44:57get there. If you don't go after it and
- 44:59like Ryan said, it is honestly the hardest part was just
- 45:02hitting submit in like starting that first application, but now
- 45:06I'm like, oh, I've got this, you know, I felt rejection before
- 45:08it's fun. But honestly just getting
- 45:11started is the hardest part. So just just do it.
- 45:13Just jump in and go for it. Yeah, I love that quote.
- 45:17And I like, I don't remember how or when I came up with that, but
- 45:20it was like, take a seat at the table or make your own table.
- 45:23Yes. And I love Nobody's gonna invite
- 45:26you, that's what I said. Nobody's going to invite you to
- 45:28the table. You know, take your seat or make
- 45:30your own table. I think is what it said.
- 45:31Yeah. And that's so true.
- 45:32Nobody's gonna baby you along the way you're just going to
- 45:35have to do it. And I have applied that like
- 45:38thought because I came up with that after finding coaching that
- 45:41sometimes we just don't understand the possibilities of
- 45:44what are out there for us, because our own thoughts limit
- 45:47us. And I love the idea of like, so
- 45:50what like make your own table then and that's just like
- 45:53stepping into the see that there are millions different ways to
- 45:57get there. We don't have to take our seat
- 45:59at the table of the table that we want to get at.
- 46:02We can just go create our own and there's a possibility in
- 46:05that and so I love that you were able to take that and kind of
- 46:09apply that for flight for yourself.
- 46:17My advice would be allow yourself to feel success.
- 46:20Allow yourself to feel rejection, just go there,
- 46:24whatever you're feeling. It will allow yourself to feel
- 46:26it. I think it's a willingness to be
- 46:28vulnerable, which is really critically important.
- 46:31So for me, the thought I had is, I've always thought I could get
- 46:34through the application process and get hired but I was worried
- 46:37like, do I have enough experience?
- 46:39Like what if I get fired? What if I put in all this
- 46:42effort? All this, you know, do all these
- 46:45things and then get So then I went there, I went there.
- 46:48Let's say, let's say I'm fired. I was willing to experience that
- 46:51and it, you know, I realize. Okay, if that happens.
- 46:55Then I will just figure something out.
- 46:58I know I can. So I think you just have to be
- 47:01willing to identify your fears and just go there and attack
- 47:04them. Not not hide from them.
- 47:06Yeah, that's really key. I love that as well because I
- 47:10think sometimes people think coaching is all about like 0,
- 47:13positive, mindset and positive things, but it's actually about
- 47:16the opposite being able to hold space for the negative parts of
- 47:20it and being able to go there to your worst case scenario and
- 47:23feel whatever that is and know that we can take all of those
- 47:26things with us. That's what creates confidence
- 47:29and knowing that we're going to always figure it out.
- 47:33Well I really appreciate you guys being on today.
- 47:36Is there anything last minute that we haven't talked about
- 47:38that? You guys would like to say or
- 47:42talk about right now? Or anybody on the fence, just do
- 47:46it getting this obsession with Janessa.
- 47:51It'll change your life and your mom set for sure.
- 47:53So if you're on the fence about it, just do it love that.

- 48:24to want you. And so definitely keep me posted

- 48:33conversations and the vulnerability that you guys have
- 48:36been able to have throughout the group and both on this podcast

- 48:42someone and it's going to hit them in a way that they need it.
- 48:46So I really appreciate that and I appreciate everything that you
