- 0:58This is Scott Becker with the Becker's Healthcare
- 1:01podcast.
- 1:02We're gonna briefly talk through nine or so
- 1:05stories that we're following in health care that
- 1:07sort of set the tone for some of
- 1:08what's going on in health care currently.
- 1:11I'll go through nine quick stories.
- 1:13Alright. First,
- 1:14Cigna announces that's gonna cut 2,000 jobs.
- 1:17Its overall medical membership is down year over
- 1:21year,
- 1:22cutting 2,000 jobs. The CEO says, essentially, trying
- 1:25to make sure the house is in order
- 1:26and that they're sharp and lean.
- 1:29Second, CVS Healthcare,
- 1:31which also owns Aetna,
- 1:33is the second largest of the huge insurers
- 1:36of the big revenue insurers.
- 1:38Ultimately, UnitedHealthcare
- 1:40is the the largest about the third or
- 1:41fourth largest company in America by revenues.
- 1:44CVS Health is right behind them.
- 1:47CVS
- 1:47reported that their profits went down about 60%
- 1:51from the year prior. So that's a move
- 1:53in the wrong direction.
- 1:55Lower profit in '25 versus '24.
- 1:58Third, another story that's a sign of a
- 2:00sign of the times,
- 2:02another Indiana hospital notes that they're phasing out
- 2:05maternity
- 2:05services.
- 2:07Again, this is part of the Johnson Memorial
- 2:09Health System, and and just a sign of
- 2:11the times that you see systems phasing out
- 2:14maternity services, they just can't staff them and
- 2:16make them work in rural areas and so
- 2:18forth.
- 2:20Fourth story that we're following today, North Star
- 2:22Health Alliance files for bankruptcy.
- 2:26This is a
- 2:27system that operates
- 2:29three or so hospitals in in a couple
- 2:31affiliates. And so that's that's that. That's number
- 2:34four story.
- 2:35Another system sort of filing for bankruptcy.
- 2:39This story that we're following is Mayo Clinic
- 2:41receives a $100,000,000
- 2:43gift. And and, again, the sign of the
- 2:44times that big systems
- 2:46really are doubling down on philanthropy and how
- 2:48they manage philanthropy dollars,
- 2:50really helps the bottom line and help systems
- 2:52to be able to continue to to thrive.
- 2:56Sixth,
- 2:57systems are in the process of preparing for
- 2:59a spike in an uninsured patients, and we
- 3:01have a story about that that we're following
- 3:03as well.
- 3:04And, again, it it concerns about
- 3:07reduced Medicaid traffic and people coming off of
- 3:09Medicare Advantage or coming off of Medicare, and
- 3:12being able to fill those gaps economically
- 3:14at systems.
- 3:16Seventh of the story we're following is the
- 3:18launch of Trump Rx, which will cover about
- 3:2040 discounted drugs to begin with, and we'll
- 3:22see how that continues to flow through and
- 3:24what happens with that.
- 3:26Eighth, a story about that we're watching closely,
- 3:29the hardest clinical jobs to fill. And, again,
- 3:32this continues to be a big issue in
- 3:34health care, as jobs become very difficult to
- 3:37fill, and and we're keeping an eye on
- 3:39that as well.
- 3:41Finally, the ninth story that we're watching today
- 3:43is the ongoing war breaking out over GLP
- 3:46one drugs and price wars between different companies,
- 3:49the movement towards pills,
- 3:51the fights with some of the distributors to
- 3:53do compounds and compounding like HIMS and HERS
- 3:56and and a lot more. Again, those are
- 3:59nine of the stories that we're following currently.
- 4:01Couple of them deal with very difficult times
- 4:03at some of the payers. A couple deal
- 4:05with, a hospital closing down maternity services,
- 4:08another health system filing for bankruptcy,
- 4:11and also worrying about the increase in uninsured
- 4:14patients. So overall,
- 4:16a bit of a challenging time in health
- 4:17care. Those are nine of the stories that
- 4:19we're that we're watching closely, and and thank
- 4:21you for listening to the Becker's health care
- 4:24podcast. Thank you very, very much.
