- 0:00When it comes to the question of control, rejection, and mastery
- 0:05over the vital nature and its desires, there is considerable
- 0:09confusion. For the most part, this
- 0:13confusion is caused by a lack of clear definition between the
- 0:17different modes of observation, response and action that the
- 0:22seeker can adopt. In relation to this concern,
- 0:26Fioro Bindo has provided us a clear distinction between what
- 0:30we call suppression, which leaves the issue unresolved and
- 0:34liable to reappear time and again until worked out
- 0:37completely, and what we call self-control, which is a first
- 0:42step towards complete mastery and the elimination of the
- 0:46response to the object of desire as it presents itself to the
- 0:50individual awareness. For example, one has a craving
- 0:56for a certain food, 1 struggles with the craving to avoid
- 1:00fulfilling it, one succeeds in overcoming it, but the
- 1:04underlying cause of the craving has not been resolved, that is
- 1:09suppression. In another instance, 1 is
- 1:13offered a particular food and simply has no desire for it as
- 1:19it does not touch the being. One simply says no and that's
- 1:24it. That is an example of
- 1:26self-control and rejection of the desire for people who've
- 1:31become vegetarian or vegan from non vegetarian background, this
- 1:37dynamic is quite easy to identify.
- 1:40Giving up the non vegetarian food may begin as something of a
- 1:44struggle if there was any attachment to it during the
- 1:48transition. Cravings may arise at a certain
- 1:52point or if one is born into a vegetarian family.
- 1:57Eating non vegetarian food is simply not an option, not a
- 2:01desire, not a craving, not something that is felt as any
- 2:06kind of sacrifice. It is simply not seen as food.
- 2:11Similarly, one may meet friends at a restaurant or other
- 2:15location that sells alcoholic drinks.
- 2:19The friends may indulge in the alcohol, but someone who does
- 2:23not have any connection to the alcohol or who has given up
- 2:27alcohol and overcome any issue of craving will simply say no
- 2:33thank you and leave it at that. These reactions are
- 2:38self-control. For someone who has an addiction
- 2:42or serious issue with the use of alcohol, there is likely at
- 2:46least initially, an element of suppression needed, particularly
- 2:51to clear the chemical response and withdrawal symptoms out of
- 2:54the system. The indulgence is avoided while
- 2:58the individual works to solve the underlying issue to reach a
- 3:02stage of total non attachment, essentially an absence of
- 3:06connection between the object of desire and the vital nature of
- 3:11the individual. However that comes about and
- 3:15however long it takes, by taking the poise of the witness of the
- 3:20nature and recognizing that all these impulses of desire
- 3:24actually come from outside and can either be admitted or denied
- 3:29admittance. The distinction between
- 3:31suppression, when something is already inside and self-control
- 3:37where it is simply denied entrance is more easily
- 3:41recognized, Sriorabindo observes.
- 3:45Quote not necessarily suppression if the refusal of
- 3:51food to a desire is accompanied by detachment in the major part
- 3:55of the being. The difference between
- 3:58suppression nigraha and self-control samyama is that one
- 4:04says I cannot help desiring but I will not satisfy my desire,
- 4:10while the other says I refuse the desire as well as the
- 4:14satisfaction of the desire. Nigraha means holding down the
- 4:19movement, but a movement merely held down is only suspended.
- 4:24It is better to reject and dismiss detaching yourself from
- 4:29it. End Quote.
