- 0:02Welcome to Impact Ready, a show dedicated to helping you elevate
- 0:06your impact in the world. I'm Steph Safra, your host.
- 0:09Let's explore the power of showing up with intention and
- 0:12energy each day. This is for those who seek to
- 0:15make life truly meaningful. Get ready for impact.
- 0:22Hello team. Welcome to the show today.
- 0:24You know, this week, all this week, I am doing my very last
- 0:27level of this specific executive coaching certification with
- 0:30Matone Global and I'm so excited about it.
- 0:34It's been awesome, incredible people that I've got to work
- 0:37with and coach with. And all four days this week, I'm
- 0:42been waking up at 4:30 and hopping on a Zoom to meet my
- 0:44colleagues to start at 5:00 AM. They're all over the world and
- 0:49we get to discuss and learn from each other about all these
- 0:52different tools and assessments to use in executive coaching.
- 0:56So I'm jacked. I'm having an awesome week.
- 0:59And it's really cool to be able to get together with a group of
- 1:03people from all over the world because you get to expose
- 1:07yourself to different perspectives, different ways of
- 1:09living. You get to hear what life is
- 1:12like in Beirut and Luxembourg and Cyprus and Baltimore.
- 1:18One of my colleagues this week, he's actually in Beirut and he
- 1:22reminded us today during a discussion about potential.
- 1:26He reminded us about the parable, the story of the
- 1:30Chinese bamboo tree. Now, I don't know if you've ever
- 1:33heard the story, but if you have 3 minutes to get pumped up in
- 1:37your day, look up the story of the Chinese bamboo tree told by
- 1:40Les Brown. You can go to YouTube and find
- 1:43it in two seconds. It's incredibly fun to watch and
- 1:46it's only three minutes. It's a great way to start your
- 1:49day. But I want to tell it to you
- 1:51now. This is a very common parable,
- 1:54and it's about a type of bamboo plant that grows in the eastern
- 1:59part of the world, the Chinese bamboo tree.
- 2:02Now, the thing about the Chinese bamboo tree is that it takes
- 2:06five years to grow. It takes five years to grow, but
- 2:10it's not until the 5th year that the plant even breaks through
- 2:14the ground and it needs to be regularly watered, fertilized
- 2:19the whole time without ever showing any signs of growth.
- 2:24Once it starts to breakthrough the ground, it can grow over 90
- 2:27feet tall in five to six weeks. So picture this.
- 2:32You've got these seeds that you planted in the ground, Chinese
- 2:35bamboo tree. And every day you're going out
- 2:38and you're watering these seeds. And every month you're
- 2:41fertilizing the ground where those seeds lay.
- 2:44And every week people are coming over and they're watching you.
- 2:48They're watching you water this patch of dirt.
- 2:52And you can imagine what the scene looks like.
- 2:54You have people come by saying, hey, what are you doing?
- 2:56And you're like, oh, well, I'm watering my Chinese bamboo tree.
- 3:00And they're looking at the ground and they say, but there's
- 3:03nothing there. And you say, oh, I know it's
- 3:06going to start growing. It's in there.
- 3:08I just have to take care of it. And people look at you and
- 3:11they're like, OK, sure. Yeah.
- 3:13And then a year or two later, those people come around again
- 3:16and they say, well, what are you doing?
- 3:19And you're saying, well, I'm tending to and nurturing my
- 3:23Chinese bamboo tree. And they say, what?
- 3:27You've been doing this for how many years?
- 3:28And that's all you have to show for it.
- 3:30There's nothing there. And this continues.
- 3:33You're tending to the tree. You're doing the daily watering,
- 3:36you're fertilizing, you're nurturing the dream of this
- 3:38tree. And you might have people coming
- 3:41around saying, what are you doing, man?
- 3:42What a waste of time. There's nothing there.
- 3:45You're just watering dirt. What do you even have to show
- 3:48for all this work that you're putting in?
- 3:51And this is where a lot of people quit.
- 3:53They walk away from the dream. They quit trying to do the thing
- 3:57they've been wanting to do for so long, whether it's writing a
- 4:00book or starting a company or becoming a parent or finding a
- 4:03partner or growing a Chinese bamboo tree.
- 4:08But for the people that don't quit and they keep watering
- 4:11every day, they get to that fifth year and all of a sudden
- 4:15the bamboo breaks through the ground.
- 4:17And suddenly it starts growing rapidly week after week until by
- 4:22the 5th week, that bamboo is 80 feet tall.
- 4:26And now guess what's happening? I know you've experienced this
- 4:31before. People are coming up to you
- 4:33saying, oh, man, I knew you had it.
- 4:36What an awesome tree. I was supporting you all along.
- 4:38I think I'm going to grow a Chinese bamboo tree too.
- 4:41Or they're saying, man, you must have gotten lucky growing that
- 4:44tree. Look how fast that happened for
- 4:45you. And the question becomes, was it
- 4:49fast? Did that tree grow in five weeks
- 4:53or did it grow in five years? And the answer is really
- 4:56obvious. The Chinese bamboo tree grew in
- 5:00five years, not 5 weeks, because at any point during the last
- 5:05five years, if you had stopped watering that tree or
- 5:07fertilizing it, it would have starved.
- 5:09It would have starved the plant, and the dream would have been
- 5:12dead in the ground. Those last five weeks were just
- 5:15the end of the cycle. And during all those years
- 5:18prior, that bamboo was laying down deep, extensive roots, a
- 5:23widespread system, deeper than most trees and most plants.
- 5:26So elaborate, so solid. If you've ever tried to kill
- 5:29bamboo, you know how absolutely insanely hard it is.
- 5:34And that's how the world can be. It's a perfect analogy for what
- 5:38it feels like to bring your dream to life sometimes.
- 5:41Every day you're out there watering the dream, you're
- 5:44fertilizing it every month, and year after year goes by where
- 5:47you might not see the kind of evidence that you'd like to see
- 5:50of the fruition of that dream. And there's going to be hard
- 5:54times when you look around and there's nobody to be found,
- 5:58nobody there supporting you, nobody cheering you on, saying,
- 6:01yeah, good job watering, good job.
- 6:03I know we don't see anything yet, but I believe in you.
- 6:05You know what, it's going to come.
- 6:07Sometimes it's just you. Sometimes you have people saying
- 6:12negative things. We've all had hard times like
- 6:15that where we are watering and tending to our dreams and we're
- 6:18not seeing anything coming out of it.
- 6:20In everyday life. It looks like struggling to make
- 6:23a payroll, or having to learn a totally new technology, or
- 6:27getting up every day at 5:00 AM to write your book.
- 6:30It might look like going through struggles of parenting a
- 6:33teenager, praying that they become this amazing adult you'd
- 6:36hope them to be. It looks like doing the work on
- 6:38your marriage so you can stay connected when the jobs get busy
- 6:42or the kids leave the house. It looks like training every
- 6:46week for six months so you can run your first marathon or lose
- 6:49that £50 that has been giving you chronic illness.
- 6:53It can be really hard to not get discouraged some days it can be
- 6:57really hard to not let other people's words of discouragement
- 7:00get to you. But there's something that
- 7:04people love about this parable because there's something really
- 7:07inspiring about the level of commitment and dedication to
- 7:11that dream. That level of knowing within
- 7:15yourself that you are capable and that you are growing your
- 7:19potential to shoot up at any given moment.
- 7:23And there is something incredibly awesome and really
- 7:29sweet about a hard earned victory.
- 7:31Les Brown talks about it. Think about how it feels to look
- 7:35back in your life and see your big wins and to think about what
- 7:40you poured into those wins, those dreams, what you learned,
- 7:44what you gained, how much you grew.
- 7:47That's pretty incredible. It's an amazing feeling to know
- 7:51that I persevered and I did this thing.
- 7:55The person you become in the process of pursuing a dream is
- 7:58far more important than ever. Reaching the dream, you learned
- 8:01to demonstrate the qualities of being an impactful person.
- 8:05You get to practice preparation and consistency.
- 8:09You lead with your purpose, showing up every day for that
- 8:12dream. You become very resilient to the
- 8:14noise of the world. You have to bring up this grit
- 8:17in yourself when things get hard, and then of course, you
- 8:22build confidence as a result because you can look back and
- 8:26see all the evidence of the things that you've overcome.
- 8:29That's the person that I would want on my team any day because
- 8:32that's a person of impact. Let me pause here for a second.
- 8:39If you're listening and thinking I'm capable of more or this is
- 8:43the level I want to operate at, this is for you.
- 8:46I work privately with a small number of high performing
- 8:49leaders who are ready to elevate how they show up in their
- 8:52business and in their lives. This isn't motivational
- 8:55coaching, it's precision work. We refine your energy,
- 8:59strengthen your ownership, and eliminate inconsistency so your
- 9:03impact becomes undeniable. If you're ready for that level
- 9:06of growth, book a private call through the link in the show
- 9:09notes. We'll see if it's a fit.
- 9:11All right, back to the episode. The reality is, so many people
- 9:19are never going to be willing to tend to a dream in this way.
- 9:23They'll never be willing to do the daily watering and
- 9:26fertilizing. They'll never choose that
- 9:28consistency of five years to see growth.
- 9:32Those are the same people who want to say that other people
- 9:35get lucky, but the reality is just that they haven't seen the
- 9:40years of tending to our dreams that will come before the actual
- 9:44shooting up of those bamboo stalks.
- 9:47So whatever dream you're watering right now, I want you
- 9:50to know that there are other people who are tending their own
- 9:53Chinese bamboo trees. And they get you.
- 9:56They understand you. They'll pass by you standing on
- 10:00your little patch of empty dirt, watering the ground, and they
- 10:04will give you a knowing nod because you are not alone.
- 10:07And no, not everyone will see the evidence of the work that
- 10:10you're doing. They won't be the one standing
- 10:12outside with you watering the bamboo.
- 10:14They might not even be cheering you on.
- 10:16But you will be the person who gets the outcomes that you want
- 10:19in your life. And along the way, you'll
- 10:21develop the courage and the wisdom to do it again.
- 10:24What a gift. So I hope this encourages you
- 10:28today. Short and sweet.
- 10:30I hope you have an incredible week.
- 10:31Thank you for being here. And as always, thank you for
- 10:34being ready to Impact. Thanks for listening to Impact
- 10:37Ready. I hope today's episode inspired
- 10:39you to own your impact and recognize that you are powerful.
- 10:43By elevating our energy and awareness, we can create
- 10:46exponential change in this life. If you enjoyed today's insights,
