Speaker 1: What's up, everyone, and welcome to another episode of the
• 0:03
Epstein Chronicles. In this episode, we're going to pick up
• 0:07
where he left off with the Bill Gates testimony to Congress.
• 0:11
Question correct, Now, I want to talk a little bit
• 0:15
more about this blackmail that I think you characterize these drafts,
• 0:19
these emails Epstein sent to himself as potential blackmail. Answer
• 0:24
as I see them today, that's, you know, my guess
• 0:27
about what he might be thinking about. Question do you
• 0:29
think that he was hoping to take a cut of
• 0:31
this proposed deal he was offering to doctor Nicolch. Answer?
• 0:35
I'm not aware of that he may have. Question he
• 0:38
never did he ever ask you for money directly paid
• 0:40
to him? Or was it always this discussion of money
• 0:43
for doctor Nicolich. Answer? He had one point, kind of
• 0:46
a weird email says that I he purports that I
• 0:51
said that I was in his debt, but that he
• 0:54
said I wasn't in his debt. And the truth is
• 0:57
I never said he was in debt. But despite his
• 1:00
saying that he didn't think that I was in his debt,
• 1:02
in that email, he seems to ask for donations to
• 1:05
be made in his name to a variety of entities.
• 1:08
So that's along the lines of, hey, I helped you
• 1:10
out with this exit, and you owe me, even though
• 1:13
the email says you don't owe me. Question did you
• 1:16
ever make a donation to that entity in Jeffrey Epstein's
• 1:19
name for him? Answer? Never in his name? Question did
• 1:22
you ever make a donation to any entity that he
• 1:25
had asked you to donate to? Answer? Yeah, there's an
• 1:28
intersection of the list he sent me and an institution
• 1:31
that I'd given to literally for decades through my work
• 1:34
at Microsoft personally and through the foundation, which is MIT.
• 1:38
And I did make a two million dollar donation to MIT. Well,
• 1:41
I made it. We can get the date overlapping this
• 1:44
period that I knew mister Epstein. Question was that donation
• 1:47
related in any way to mister Epstein or you saying
• 1:50
it's happenstance since you had already been donating to them.
• 1:54
Answer I'd say the timing was somewhat related. That is,
• 1:57
I've given to MIT many times. There's a building there,
• 2:01
you know, there's some ongoing medical work, which is absolutely fantastic.
• 2:06
But I gave a two million dollar donation without you know,
• 2:09
mentioning mister Epstein's name. You know, not related to any
• 2:12
program that he was involved in, and so that was
• 2:14
the primary purpose was to help MIT. As a secondary thing,
• 2:19
I did tell mister Epstein about the donation, hoping that
• 2:22
it might factor into his no longer coming to me
• 2:25
and asking for donations in his name, which is something
• 2:27
I've been clear I was not going to do. Question. So,
• 2:31
just to be clear, the donation to MIT was not
• 2:34
in response to any blackmail or threats that mister Epstein
• 2:37
had made. Answer. No, The primary purpose was to get
• 2:42
resources to MIT, who had always used my gifts in
• 2:45
a very effective way. There was a secondary thing that
• 2:48
I told Epstein about and hoping that would bring an
• 2:50
end to this weird set of emails where he acted
• 2:53
like I should make a donation in his name. Mister Grant,
• 2:57
And did MIT ever discuss Jeffrey Epstein with Hugh at
• 2:59
any point during the donation process? Gates No. No. In fact,
• 3:05
they did an investigation to make sure that the donation
• 3:08
was not Epstein related and found that it was not.
• 3:12
Question And did they talk to you as part of
• 3:14
the investigation? Answer? Yes, question by mister spector. Question again,
• 3:19
I'll try to avoid too much paper, but a representative
• 3:22
for you in the media said that mister Gates met
• 3:24
with Epstein solely for philanthropic purposes. Having failed a repeated
• 3:29
lead to draw mister Gates beyond these matters, Epstein tried
• 3:32
unsuccessfully at a leverage a pass relationship the threatened mister Gates.
• 3:37
So let's talk about that last part first. He tried
• 3:41
unsuccessfully to leverage a pass relationship. Is that the three
• 3:44
affairs we've discussed or is it something else? Answer? Doctor
• 3:49
Jacobs never came up with Epstein any way, shape or form,
• 3:52
so it certainly doesn't refer to that. As I said
• 3:55
during the exit period, there was never an explicit hey,
• 3:58
if you don't do something, I'll reveal this. There was
• 4:02
a veiled type of language, Hey, we should all want
• 4:04
to be friends. And as I've said, I took that
• 4:08
on very explicitly and said, look, if you think you're
• 4:11
going to get more money out of this, it's not
• 4:13
gonna happen. And if that means you go out and
• 4:15
talk to people about things, I will just bear the
• 4:17
pain of that and deal with it. And so I was.
• 4:22
I was not blackmailed. But you know, as you look
• 4:24
at the emails, you know it looks like mister Epstein brainstorming,
• 4:27
and he was going in that direction. Question, and just
• 4:30
to be clear the past relationship that he unsuccessfully tried
• 4:33
to leverage. What that refers to is the thinly veiled
• 4:36
threats we've already discussed over the course of today's interview.
• 4:40
Answer relative to the bridge player and the nuclear well.
• 4:43
At the time, I mean, I wasn't sure what it
• 4:46
referred to, but I had to assume that there was
• 4:48
some chance that the two affairs that Boris was aware
• 4:51
of had communication mister Epstein. Question, and just to clarify
• 4:55
also the beginning part of that statement, mister Gates met
• 4:59
with Epstein's solely for philanthropic purposes. As we've discussed today,
• 5:04
you also met with mister Epstein with regard to the
• 5:06
dispute with the negotiation with doctor Nikolitch. Is that right? Answer? Yeah,
• 5:11
And there were dinners where a philanthropic thing would have
• 5:13
come up, but wouldn't have necessarily, you know, when Jess
• 5:16
Daily or Larry Summers was there, these you and people
• 5:19
that I'm meeting for the first time, we would discuss
• 5:21
other topics. So the primary topic of the times I
• 5:25
spent with mister Epstein were my attempt to raise billions
• 5:28
for global health. There were other things, including doctor Nikolitch's exit,
• 5:33
you know, when he comes out in August. I doubt
• 5:35
we discussed global health at that meeting. I think that
• 5:38
was solely focused on this exit question. And just to
• 5:41
be clear, the statement says that you solely met with
• 5:44
mister Epstein for philanthropic purposes, So that's not true then, right, answer,
• 5:51
I it's the correct summary would be to say that
• 5:54
the primary reason that I met with him, you know,
• 5:56
so if a report is oversimplified, that's a mistake. Question.
• 6:00
And again, you've said that you were not black meilt,
• 6:02
and I think maybe what you mean is you were
• 6:05
not successfully black melt, but it seems like mister Epstein
• 6:07
was trying to really hard to blackmail you answer. If
• 6:10
those emails that contained some truth and some false things
• 6:13
were ever sent, then we could say that there was
• 6:16
an attempt to blackmail that never happened. You know, I
• 6:18
don't know if doctor Nikolch ever saw those, but I
• 6:21
certainly never saw those. Those would have been then it
• 6:24
would have been hard or been black and white that
• 6:27
that's what they were attempting to do. What actually happened
• 6:30
is that they made veiled references that because of that,
• 6:33
you know, I explicitly raised the idea that they're disclosing
• 6:36
whatever they knew about me, that I would deal with that,
• 6:39
and I was going to raise the offer because of
• 6:41
my concerns about what might be behind those veiled references. Question.
• 6:46
And I think that's correct when you look back at
• 6:48
majority Exhibit one and in the emails that are open
• 6:51
discussions between mister Epstein and nicolch about you, you know,
• 6:54
in an email they might send to you again that
• 6:57
they ultimately did not. It's more thinly. It only references,
• 7:02
as we discussed earlier, sensitive information and a dilemma of
• 7:05
trust and these thinly veiled threats. Is that kind of
• 7:10
what you're talking about, that sort of language. Answer? I
• 7:13
think you're referring to an email that I'm not copied on. Question.
• 7:16
You are not copied on the email? That's correct? Answer, Yeah, moron.
• 7:21
Is that the type of statement gets cut off by Gates.
• 7:24
That is the type of statement that Epstein made. Specter, Okay,
• 7:28
they go off the record, they come back on question.
• 7:32
Good afternoon, mister Gates answer, good afternoon. Question. When we left,
• 7:36
during our last round together, we were proceeding through the
• 7:39
chronology of your meetings with mister Epstein. I'd like to
• 7:42
continue doing that if I could, but first just step
• 7:45
back in time to twenty eleven, and this would be
• 7:48
your first meeting with mister Epstein at his home. In
• 7:51
January of twenty eleven, it was reported in Forbes magazine
• 7:55
that after visiting Epstein for the first time, you told
• 7:58
colleagues in an email the next day that Epstein, and
• 8:02
I'm quoting from the article lifestyle is very different and
• 8:05
kind of intriguing, although it would not work for me.
• 8:08
Do you recall telling colleagues that after your initial visit. Answer? Yeah,
• 8:13
I sent an email to one person saying that question.
• 8:15
Who was that person? Answer, doctor Walker question? And what
• 8:19
did you mean by different and intriguing? Answer? Well, as
• 8:23
you said, that was the first time I'd ever met Epstein,
• 8:26
and during that dinner meeting, he'd refer to a lot
• 8:28
of scientists and economists that would spend time talking to him.
• 8:32
You know, I never followed up to see, you know,
• 8:34
particularly given what I know about his credibility now which
• 8:37
of those were real and were not real? But you know,
• 8:40
my first impression was that he took time being kind
• 8:43
of different, a lot of different science and economic areas,
• 8:47
and you know, I picked particular areas to focus in
• 8:50
software while I was at Microsoft, and global health and
• 8:53
education at the Foundation, and so yes, I made the
• 8:56
remark that it was what I'd heard from him was
• 8:59
intriguing but not for me. Question I appreciate that. And
• 9:04
then stepping ahead in time again back to twenty fourteen,
• 9:08
just generally, do you have any recollection of the meetings
• 9:10
that you had with Jeffrey Epstein during that year? Answer?
• 9:14
I know the last two. If we want to go
• 9:16
through the mall, I should refresh my recollection. Answer. I
• 9:20
think before you do that, I'll show you another exhibit,
• 9:23
and this will be Exhibit F. This is yet another
• 9:26
email setting forth Jeffrey Epstein's schedule from September twenty fourteen.
• 9:31
It refers to some kind of specific meetings I'd like
• 9:33
to ask you about. So, looking at the first entry
• 9:37
at the top of the email from September eighth, twenty fourteen,
• 9:41
there is a notation for ten am meeting with you
• 9:43
and Tom Pritzker at the Park Hyatt in New York.
• 9:46
Do you recall that meeting? Answer? Yes? Question okay, what
• 9:50
was the purpose of that meeting answer, Well, as we
• 9:54
got into late twenty thirteen. In twenty fourteen, and Epstein
• 9:57
was focusing on more of the structure of how these
• 10:00
reported donations would be handled. I, particularly after the fall
• 10:04
of twenty thirteen, put a lot more pressure on them
• 10:07
to identify specifically, you know, which Wall Street or Middle
• 10:10
East or other billionaires. Did he really think we're going
• 10:13
to make these large donations, because you know, very few
• 10:16
people give money to global health and I, you know,
• 10:20
wanted to see if he was stringing me out or
• 10:22
was legitimate. And in response to that, he said, oh, yeah,
• 10:25
there's a bunch. Let me set up some meetings with
• 10:28
some of the people who may do this thing. And
• 10:31
so this series of meetings on September fifth. This is
• 10:34
the second to last time that I ever spent with Epstein,
• 10:37
but it's the first time that I'm getting concrete that, hey,
• 10:40
if this is going to happen, here are the people
• 10:43
or some of the people. And he still referred to
• 10:45
the Middle East and said, you know, they might be
• 10:47
available later, but that didn't amount to anything. So we
• 10:51
met with several people on September fifth in New York City.
• 10:55
Question and I'll walk through each of these meetings set
• 10:57
forth in the exhibit in more detail, but overall, you know, oh,
• 11:00
the first entry, as I noted, refers to a meeting
• 11:02
with Tom Pritzker. There's another referringly on Black, another to
• 11:06
Larry Summers, another to mort Zuckerman, and another with Kathy Rumler.
• 11:12
What was your overall assessment at the conclusion of this
• 11:15
series of meetings. Were you satisfied that the prospect of
• 11:18
securing funding was becoming more concrete or did it still
• 11:21
remain nebulous and in choate in your mind? Answer? Yeah,
• 11:26
to be clear, I never saw Larry Summers on this day.
• 11:29
Question sure, and I'll get to that one answer. Okay, question,
• 11:33
but yeah, I appreciate the clarification. Answer. No, Unfortunately, these
• 11:39
were friendly meetings, and you know, I talked about Gavey
• 11:42
and Global Fund and lots of things in global health
• 11:44
where lives are being saved, you know, for less than
• 11:46
two thousand per life. It didn't appear any of these people.
• 11:50
The Kathy Rumler meeting is of a different nature, which
• 11:54
we can talk about, but she was not a potential giver.
• 11:57
The other men that I met that day were presented
• 11:59
as POTENTI givers, and they were very polite, you know,
• 12:02
praising the work I was doing in global health, but
• 12:05
they clearly none of them was at a point where
• 12:08
they were deciding to give large additional sums in general
• 12:11
and not the global health. They were impolite enough to
• 12:14
say that, you know, maybe when they get around to
• 12:17
doing their full giving plans, they might think about it.
• 12:20
But it was complete disappointment from my point of view,
• 12:23
even though it was all very friendly. All right, folks,
• 12:26
we're going to wrap up right here, and in the
• 12:28
next episode dealing with the topic, we're going to pick
• 12:30
up where we left off. All the information that goes
• 12:33
with this episode can be found in the description box.
