- 0:05SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Daily Rider, where we share a lesson each day to help you cultivate the habits for creative success.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: Michelangelo was one of the greatest artists who ever lived.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: As a sculptor, painter, designer, architect, and so much more, he transformed history and was a major force of the Italian Renaissance.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: But have you ever considered exactly what it was that made Michelangelo so great?
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: Was it his creative genius, his relationship with powerful and influential people such as the Pope?
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: His ability to organize massive projects such as the painting of the Sistine Chapel?
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: Well, all those factors surely played a part in his greatness, but above all, Michelangelo was a guy who got things done.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: He finished projects and he saw them through to completion.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: Contrast this with his contemporary and his creative rival, Leonardo da Vinci.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Even though Da Vinci had a wider range of creative interest, and he also had one of the most fertile minds in history, Da Vinci often left projects half finished.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: As anyone can see in his famous notebooks, Da Vinci was a guy who had lots of great ideas, but he had trouble translating them into practical reality.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: Michelangelo once said, I saw an angel in the marble, and I carved until I set him free.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: In that quote, we like to focus on the angel in the marble, but let's not forget about the part where he kept carving until the angel was set free.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: Marble is a very hard substance.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: It took Michelangelo four whole years working on his 16 foot statue of David until that was done.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: But eventually he finished and moved on to the next project.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: There's a great lesson there for all of us writers who are working on big major projects.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: You keep showing up every day, you keep carving and making a little bit of progress, and then one day, almost like magic, it's finished.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: That book you've been working on, that little angel, will sprout wings and finally fly.
