The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe’s Headstart program has shut down after years of struggle, unable to secure flexible federal funding that wouldn’t allow tribes to split the grant. Tribal Chairman Steven Wadsworth says the program’s closure leaves a major gap in early childhood education — but families now have an alternative through Washoe County’s Early Childhood Development Program for four-year-olds.
