Latest / gasp! the pod / celebrity endorsement controversy: chappell, taylor & beyonce
Transcript
- 0:00There's a conservatism rooted in the NFL, like that's a fact.
- 0:06So also take a shot every time I say that's a fact on this
- 0:11podcast. Hey, Gaspers, and welcome back
- 0:23to Gasp the Pod. Today we are talking about
- 0:28politics. Don't get scared.
- 0:30Don't get scared. Trust me.
- 0:32It's going to be a very fun episode.
- 0:33We're going to be talking about celebrity endorsements, the
- 0:36controversy surrounding them. We're going to talk about Chapel
- 0:39Roan, of course, of course, Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, the Trump
- 0:48aspect of this election. So yeah, we're going to talk
- 0:52about some very interesting, fun, controversial things.
- 0:56I have some hot takes, which is the whole point of this podcast.
- 0:58So just a reminder, it's OK if we disagree on like these little
- 1:03things. So if you disagree with me,
- 1:06don't stop listening. That's just the whole point of
- 1:08the podcast is I'm going to have some hot takes.
- 1:11But I think most of us here all agree on like the basic things
- 1:16and like human rights and you know, that Trump is a fascist
- 1:19and all that kind of stuff, right?
- 1:21So, like, it's OK if we disagree in the small things, but I'm
- 1:23going to have some hot ticks. Do you guys like my shirt?
- 1:27It says comma LA. Just a few housekeeping things.
- 1:35First off, if you have not voted yet, please for the love of God,
- 1:39vote. Not just local elections.
- 1:41Please please vote for president and do not vote third party.
- 1:46It literally will not make a difference.
- 1:48A vote for 3rd party this year is a vote for Trump.
- 1:50Point blank period. We can get into this a little
- 1:53bit further. I'm totally not against a third
- 1:55party system or like having other people besides a Democrat
- 1:58and Republican like run for office.
- 2:00But that will not happen 7 days into the election like before
- 2:04the election right? So like, there's no way we're
- 2:08solving the entire system right now.
- 2:11Either Kamala or Trump will be president.
- 2:13Please pick one, and please pick Kamala.
- 2:16Oh my Jesus Christ. I think there's no one here
- 2:19that's going to vote for Trump. If you're listening to this and
- 2:21you're voting for Trump, stop hate watching me.
- 2:24Please vote. It really makes a difference.
- 2:26This year, I'm voting absentee in California.
- 2:29I was trying to vote in New York or Virginia.
- 2:32My parents live in Virginia. I just moved to New York but it
- 2:35was like too late to process all the registration by the time I
- 2:39move. So I'm voting absentee in
- 2:40California. But that still really matters.
- 2:42So even if you're in like solid blue state, please vote for
- 2:47president. Like it's going to be one of the
- 2:49closest races we've ever seen. Need to remember right now.
- 2:53I saw this stat the other day. This is a closer race now than
- 2:59it was like even months out in the 2020 election.
- 3:03So like, this is going to be a very, very close race.
- 3:07And literally every vote counts. And that really pushes us into
- 3:10what I'm going to talk about today, which is why I think
- 3:13celebrity endorsements do matter if you have a great enough
- 3:18following, right? Let's just start off this
- 3:21podcast and let's dig right into Miss Taylor, Alison Swift.
- 3:27OK, so in 2016, Taylor Swift did not publicly endorse a
- 3:33candidate. A lot of backlash happened after
- 3:36this because people were like, wait, is she secretly a Trumper?
- 3:40And we need to remember a lot of her fans are not necessarily,
- 3:45like, liberal or like, even care about basic human rights.
- 3:49Like, a lot of Swifties are homophobic.
- 3:52Not you guys though, but a lot of Swifties are homophobes and
- 3:56she has a very wide audience. So there's a lot of people that
- 4:00were like, oh hell yes, she's like a MAGA queen.
- 4:03And in 2018, she became political for the first time or
- 4:08publicly political when she pretty much went against Marsha
- 4:12Blackburn, who was running for Tennessee office, Senate in
- 4:17Tennessee. So Marsha Blackburn was like
- 4:20super is super homophobic and it's all these bills that
- 4:23protect women, obviously pro-life and all these things.
- 4:27So Taylor Swift made a post and she was like, this is affecting
- 4:31my hometown and I need to say something.
- 4:34We cannot get Marsha Blackburn elected.
- 4:36And in 2020, she kind of followed this and endorsed
- 4:41Kamala Harris and Joe Biden for president, Joe Biden for
- 4:45president and Kamala Harris for vice president.
- 4:47And in her documentary Miss Americana, she was saying, like,
- 4:50one of the reasons why she decided to, like, step up is
- 4:53that she wanted to, like, make sure that the confusion around
- 4:56her, like, was settled, that people knew.
- 4:58Like, she didn't know that people thought that she was a
- 5:00Trump supporter until 2016. And she talks about how in 2016,
- 5:04she, like, just wasn't in the healthy mind to, like, be
- 5:07political, which is so fair because she's probably going
- 5:09through a breakup with Curly Kloss and also was obviously
- 5:12facing this, like, huge public backlash.
- 5:15So she wanted to, like, make her wrongs right.
- 5:18And she talks about how Todrick Hall, one of her best friends,
- 5:20was like, who's gay? Was like, if you had a gay son,
- 5:24like, if you had a gay kid, how would you react to that?
- 5:27And Taylor Swift was like, wait, you don't think I would react
- 5:31well to that, obviously, because she's also gay.
- 5:33But that's for a whole other episode.
- 5:37And we have covered that, and we will continue to cover that.
- 5:40But she was like, I need to make sure that people know where I
- 5:44stand. And that's kind of the backdrop
- 5:47to all of this, right? So in 2020, she endorsed Joe
- 5:49Biden and Kamala Harris. There were mixed reviews when
- 5:54this happened. A lot of articles are saying,
- 5:57and I'll read from one right now, that like this didn't do
- 6:01anything and this didn't change anything.
- 6:04But we need to remember that like celebrity endorsements are
- 6:09like this is my opinion are not necessarily to convince people
- 6:15who didn't like her already or who who were conservative Taylor
- 6:18Swift fans to become liberal. Obviously, like that's the ideal
- 6:24scenario, but I don't think in practice that's what it's doing.
- 6:28And I don't even think we need that from them, right?
- 6:32The whole point is to galvanized the people that already agree
- 6:36with the same values that Taylor Swift has, which is like
- 6:39pro-choice, LGBTQ rights and make sure that they vote.
- 6:43Because in this election, I know we're focused a lot on like
- 6:48swaying people away from Trump and that's super important.
- 6:52But we just, it's going to be such a close election that like
- 6:55we need every Democrat and every liberal to vote, especially
- 6:59young people that there's millions of young people that
- 7:02have that this is their first election.
- 7:05So having a celebrity reach out to her fandom, which she's the
- 7:10most famous person in the world right now probably, and say just
- 7:17click on this link and register to vote.
- 7:19Giving people a way to do it that may have already agreed
- 7:22with her but then just didn't like take that extra step is
- 7:25super influential. We don't necessarily need
- 7:28celebrities to, like, be the convincers, OK?
- 7:31Like, that's for the campaign to do.
- 7:33And that'd be awesome. I'm sure she's maybe convincing
- 7:35a few people. But like, a lot of these stats
- 7:37and these articles are like, oh, it's not going to convince
- 7:40people. Like, people are actually the
- 7:41conservative fans even hate her more now.
- 7:43It's like, yeah, that's so true. Like, we want conservative fans
- 7:46to change their minds, but we also just need to make sure that
- 7:49every single Democrat votes. There are more Democrats than
- 7:53there are Republicans. Let me check on that.
- 7:57There are more Democrats than there are Republicans.
- 8:01So we need every single Democrat to vote because Republicans have
- 8:05a higher voting right. This is a fact, and I worked in
- 8:09politics and I know this. Republicans will always go out
- 8:12and vote. We need Democrats to do the
- 8:14same. Even if you don't agree with the
- 8:17majority of Kamala Harris's policies, because at the end of
- 8:19the day, it's literally about saving democracy and saving our
- 8:23rights. So that's the background of
- 8:25Taylor Swift from 2020 in the Miss American documentary.
- 8:31Highly recommend you go back and watch it.
- 8:33She's talking with her dad and some of these other people on
- 8:36her management team that are obviously very close to her and
- 8:39her mom's supporting her cause of course.
- 8:41And, and I'll read, I'll read you what she says.
- 8:44And Miss Americana, a lot of what she says in this
- 8:47documentary also informs how gaylords think about her and her
- 8:51career. And like, yes, she's so fucking
- 8:55famous, but like, her decisions impact her career and her what
- 9:04she says politically and like, and how she identifies perhaps
- 9:08as possibly queer is queer that vastly effects who listens to
- 9:16her. And this is not these decisions
- 9:18are not just made purely by herself.
- 9:20Taylor Swift is not just a person.
- 9:21She's also a brand. And her management is like, part
- 9:26of her family, and they're advising her to maintain this
- 9:30brand. So what can you do to lose half
- 9:34of your listeners? This is what her dad and her
- 9:37management says. And Miss Americana, when Taylor
- 9:39Swift says that she wants to speak publicly about politics,
- 9:44he says, what if I said, right now you could cut your listeners
- 9:47in half? Imagine what happened if she
- 9:50says I'm queer. Besides being like I'm an ally.
- 9:55There's a huge difference between saying I'm an ally and
- 9:59saying I'm queer. And I believe she is queer and
- 10:03she's been saying that. But making this huge statement
- 10:05that's for straight people would make her lose viewers and make
- 10:09her lose popularity. And there's a brand behind her
- 10:13that does not want that to happen.
- 10:15There's a team behind her that does not want that to happen.
- 10:17So Taylor Swift says in her documentary, she says part of
- 10:21the fabric of being a country artist is don't force your
- 10:24politics on people. We saw this and what happens
- 10:26with the Chicks, formerly known as the Dixie Chicks, and they
- 10:29came out against George Bush and they pretty much lost their
- 10:31entire career, right? And that's not the crazy that
- 10:35could still happen today. And it still happens today.
- 10:39Beyoncé, a country artist, has literally been shunned by the
- 10:44country community pretty much from her, like, due to racist
- 10:47reasons, because she's black. So this continuously happens.
- 10:51And it's not the craziest thing that, you know, a brand and a
- 10:57celebrity has to think twice about what are they, what
- 11:01they're going to say politically.
- 11:02But it also really does matter. And even though it's a risk, it
- 11:05really is important, I believe. OK, so she says quote in the
- 11:10Miss American documentary. And this is literally her
- 11:13arguing with her team about wanting to say something
- 11:16political. She says it really is a big deal
- 11:18to me. Marsha Blackburn votes against
- 11:22fair pay for women, votes against the reauthorization of
- 11:25the Violence Against Women Act, which is just basically
- 11:27protecting US against domestic abuse and stalking.
- 11:30And then she points to herself and repeats stalking.
- 11:32And also let's remember she was she was assaulted.
- 11:38So this is influencing her as well, She says Blackburn thinks
- 11:42that if you are a gay couple or even if you look like a gay,
- 11:45even if you look like a gay couple.
- 11:47And I thought that was interesting because that's
- 11:50important to her. You should be allowed to be
- 11:52kicked out of a restaurant. It's really basic human rights
- 11:55and it's right and wrong at this point.
- 11:56It's so true, says Dad. I just need you to forgive me
- 11:59for doing it 'cause I'm already doing it.
- 12:01And she was also saying, and during the Miss Americana
- 12:03documentary, that she was saying this to her dad.
- 12:06These are not your dad's Republicans.
- 12:09The Republican Party is not just like fiscal conservatism.
- 12:15It is loudly racist and it's going to end the Constitution.
- 12:20I mean, like Donald Trump wants to get rid of the Department of
- 12:23Education, he wants to get rid of the Department of Justice,
- 12:25etcetera, etcetera. So the larger point is that in
- 12:282020, Taylor Swift was very loudly political.
- 12:31And I think us as a liberal part of the fandom, we were thinking,
- 12:37this is going to continue. I will say that ever since the
- 12:40Heiress tour started, we need to remember her fan base grew
- 12:43exponentially. And there are a lot of people
- 12:46that weren't necessarily Taylor Swift fans that became kind of
- 12:48like obsessed with like the momentum of the fandom and the
- 12:52Heiress tour and Taylor Swift and Girlhood and Barbie,
- 12:55etcetera. And this attracted a lot of
- 12:57conservatives and homophobic Christians, might I add, and
- 13:02people around the world. So ever since then, I haven't
- 13:07seen her be political, like, at all, and especially her
- 13:13associating with the NFL and, like, Kansas City Chiefs.
- 13:16And a lot of these teams are owned by like these corporations
- 13:19that like donate to Trump and like there's a conservatism
- 13:24rooted in the NFL. Like that's a fact.
- 13:29So also take a shot every time I say that's a fact on this
- 13:33podcast. But her association with Travis
- 13:36Kelce, the NFL and like football really galvanized her kind of
- 13:42like, right part of her base and her Christian conservative base.
- 13:48And there was a lot of people that were like, Oh my God, love.
- 13:51Like, it leaned into the patriarchal aspect of America.
- 13:57So I had a fear. But I had hoped, and I'm so glad
- 14:01I was right, that she was going to abandon kind of her, like,
- 14:05liberal ideals because now there's a huge portion of
- 14:09America that's like a fan of her again.
- 14:12And she wants to appeal to everyone and not lose these
- 14:14fans. I'm very glad that she decided
- 14:18to endorse Kamala Harris. But of course, that didn't come
- 14:22without pressure from her fans. That's why it's so, so important
- 14:26to hold celebrities accountable and remind them that we need
- 14:30this from them. And it's not enough to just say
- 14:33that every four years you're voting for president.
- 14:36Like I did need her consistently in the last few years to be more
- 14:42vocal about like trans rights and LGBTQ rights.
- 14:46And I mean, Roe V Wade was overturned.
- 14:50And I don't think that like we got enough from her on that.
- 14:53There's a lot of this is my hot take.
- 14:55This is where my hot take comes in is that we, a lot of people
- 14:58say, oh, we don't, We don't. Taylor Swift doesn't owe that to
- 15:01us. I think she does.
- 15:04I think Taylor Swift and billionaires and this is no
- 15:07hate. I think this is a very normal
- 15:09relationship to have with celebrities that make money from
- 15:12US streaming and viewing and listening to her content and her
- 15:17music. I think they these celebrities,
- 15:21especially when they're billionaires, they do owe us.
- 15:25I think we are owed her politics and she is going to vote for a
- 15:31candidate that is pro LGBTQ rights, pro women's rights, pro
- 15:36the right to choose. This is something she says that
- 15:39she cares about. So I do think we are owed her
- 15:42endorsement. I do like, we pay her as a
- 15:46billionaire and as LGBTQ fans, as women fans, as like people of
- 15:50color who are fans of her. We need to know that she, like,
- 15:54supports our basic human rights to continue to listen to her.
- 15:57And I'm so glad that after a lot of fans like wondering and
- 16:02including me being like, where's Taylor Swift in this election a
- 16:05few months ago, that she came out and said, yes, I'm voting
- 16:08for Kamala Harris because of these reasons.
- 16:11And a lot of people were like, we, you shouldn't have doubted
- 16:13her. You shouldn't have doubted her.
- 16:15It's not about doubting, it's not even about her as an
- 16:19individual. It's about using your billion
- 16:22dollar platform for something good.
- 16:25And she did. And it's important for people to
- 16:28like hold billionaires accountable and question and ask
- 16:35and make sure that they are like putting their money where their
- 16:38mouth is and not just like letting go of their policies
- 16:43just because they're suddenly more famous with NFL.
- 16:45And I'm so glad she didn't just like, you know, I think my, I
- 16:50had a theory and I still kind of hold on to this theory that her
- 16:52association, her association with NFL and like middle America
- 16:57and like conservative moms and Christian women and these like
- 17:02straight Swifties and like men, right?
- 17:06Like men in football and the dads of Swifties was to
- 17:09galvanized this voter base and get them out to vote in this
- 17:13election. And I think she did just that.
- 17:18She was also spotted with Brittany Mahomes right after
- 17:23Brittany Mahomes at the US Open right after Brittany Mahomes
- 17:27said that she like reposted Donald Trump's plan for America.
- 17:32And that included like, banning books, getting rid of the
- 17:36Department of Education, banning free speech in public schools,
- 17:42like increasing tariffs. We need to remember Donald Trump
- 17:44is not good for the economy. All of these things are so
- 17:47hateful. And Taylor Swift was spotted
- 17:49with bringing Mahomes. After that, I think it's so fair
- 17:52to be like, who do you hang out with in your life?
- 17:55I'm so glad that after that she did endorse Kamala Harris.
- 17:59Let's talk about the reaction to her endorsement for Kamala
- 18:02Harris and Tim Walz. A lot of people are saying, oh,
- 18:06it's making no difference. No one cares what a celebrity
- 18:10thinks. Cool.
- 18:11We didn't ask very conservative people if they were going to
- 18:16suddenly vote for Kamala Harris when Taylor Swift endorsed her.
- 18:19No one thought that. At least no one who was educated
- 18:21thought that. I didn't think that.
- 18:23We're talking about people who are maybe a little disillusioned
- 18:27with how politics are. Maybe it's their first time
- 18:29voting. Maybe there's people that we can
- 18:32talk about this with. Chapel Rowan are concerned about
- 18:34Kamala Harris's stance on Palestine, which I am deeply
- 18:37concerned about her stances on Palestine.
- 18:39And we know we cannot let Donald Trump be president.
- 18:43So it's getting these groups of people a little bit more fired
- 18:48up about the idea of voting and including a link to vote.
- 18:51So let's check the stats. Also, she signed off as a
- 18:54childless cat lady, which goes to show her connection with
- 18:57lesbianism and witches. We can That was a little nod to
- 19:01my last episode. It's a fuck you to JD Vance and
- 19:05anyone trying to pander to women right now.
- 19:08Like, we're not fucking idiots, OK?
- 19:11A lot of people say the endorsements don't mean
- 19:13anything. But Peter Mancusi, an attorney,
- 19:16and this is from Northeastern Global News.
- 19:22He's a crisis manager and associate teaching professor of
- 19:25journalism and at Northeastern University.
- 19:27He says that Swift's endorsement may nudge undecided voters
- 19:30towards Harris. Fucking traditional wisdom that
- 19:32says celebrities don't have an impact.
- 19:35A lot of this traditional wisdom also comes from celebrities that
- 19:37are not like Taylor Swift. Taylor Swift is like a political
- 19:41leader herself. There was, I think like an
- 19:43article out a year ago saying that like Taylor Swift, like
- 19:46would win an election if she run, if she ran for president.
- 19:51OK. After she endorsed Kamala
- 19:53Harris. This kind of goes to show that
- 19:55there's like a conservative backlash to her whenever she
- 19:59says something political or like pro AGBTQ or pro women or like
- 20:04anything that doesn't support like Trump and like hyper
- 20:08patriarchical conservative views, right?
- 20:10So she endorsed Kamala Harris. Her Spotify numbers dropped by
- 20:132,000,000 after this. So yeah, it's impacting her
- 20:19career, but it's extremely important to the majority of her
- 20:22fans. OK, so there were some articles
- 20:24saying that this actually hurt Kamala Harris's campaign.
- 20:28I fundamentally disagree with this, and I'll tell you why.
- 20:33First of all, I think when you actually look at the stats,
- 20:35that's a misleading article. This the stats conducted by
- 20:39Quinia PAC University, it says more than 3/4 of likely voters
- 20:43say that Taylor Swift's endorsement of Kamala Harris
- 20:46does not make a difference in their level of enthusiasm.
- 20:49OK, that's great. Like, for example, it didn't
- 20:51make me more more likely to vote for Kamala.
- 20:55I was already going to vote for Kamala, right?
- 20:57So it needs, it's probably including those voters as well.
- 21:019% says it makes them more enthusiastic, and 13 percent
- 21:04says it makes them less enthusiastic.
- 21:06So these 13% are not even necessarily Taylor Swift fans.
- 21:10Remember, people still hate her. So I don't really think that
- 21:14that actually hurt Kamala Harris's campaign.
- 21:17These were probably people who already hated Taylor Swift and
- 21:20were like, yeah, fuck that. So there's a Newsweek poll that
- 21:25found that 34% of Gen. Z voters were either more likely
- 21:28or significantly more likely to vote for a Swift indoors
- 21:30candidate. So I do really think that Taylor
- 21:35Swift can make a difference in this election and has made a
- 21:38difference in this election. And I think other celebrities
- 21:41need to follow suit. There were rumors that Travis
- 21:44Kelsey was going to endorse Kamala and Tim.
- 21:49I'm very disappointed that he has not endorsed them.
- 21:52He didn't even like Taylor Swift's post.
- 21:55What kind of couple does that like?
- 21:57She makes this like big announcement of an endorsement
- 21:59and he doesn't even like her Instagram post?
- 22:02What the fuck? Besides her like convinced
- 22:05trying to convince people to vote for Kamala Harris?
- 22:09This is going back to like the importance of voting, Swift's
- 22:12endorsement for Harris, and it included a vote.gov link for
- 22:17people to register to vote. It got almost 400,000 clicks.
- 22:23That's half a million people that looked up their voting
- 22:27site. We're going to talk about
- 22:29Beyoncé and then we're going to finish by talking about Chapel
- 22:31Rd. and all of that controversy. And I have another hot take.
- 22:35The strategy of celebrities and how they go about political
- 22:39endorsements is really important.
- 22:41This is not just random and it shouldn't be random.
- 22:44Q Chapel run. But you do have to be very
- 22:46strategic and think about what you're saying and if it's going
- 22:49to offset a candidate and how influential it's going to be.
- 22:53I've worked in multiple political jobs and even just the
- 22:59slightest wording of something, I know we'll set off a
- 23:02conservative. I don't can I say this yet?
- 23:05I've done like political spy work and I've like sat in on
- 23:13conservative rallies and conservative meetings and people
- 23:15thought I was a conservative. I like pretended to be
- 23:17conservative. I had a fake name and
- 23:18everything. I think I can say this because
- 23:22I'm out of this job and I got really familiar with the
- 23:25rhetoric and what and how to not set off a conservative right.
- 23:29So like I'm very familiar with this type of wording.
- 23:32And I know in campaign strategy, this is not just like these are
- 23:37very fine-tuned specific things that we say and we don't say
- 23:41because we know how it's going to be spun on like Fox News and
- 23:45on like right wing media. But I know that, like, Taylor
- 23:48Swift's team was talking to Kamala Harris's team, like, that
- 23:51had to have happened. I know that Taylor Swift wants
- 23:55to be like, very careful when she even says, like her own
- 23:57statement. So I know she wanted to make
- 23:59sure that this was like, OK for her to say.
- 24:02I do think that like Beyoncé did as well.
- 24:05I think that Beyoncé did not perform at this latest rally in
- 24:09Houston because of the controversy that happened in all
- 24:13the pushbacks she got from conservative media in 2016.
- 24:19So I think she was like, I need to not perform, but really have
- 24:22just like a speech and be like, I'm coming to you as like a
- 24:25mother. And that's what she did in
- 24:28Houston. The other reason why they went
- 24:31to Texas, a lot of people are like, wait, why are they in
- 24:33Texas? Obviously Beyoncé is from
- 24:35Houston, but also these are voters that like we can get out
- 24:39of Texas. Texas is a very blue state.
- 24:43Obviously it's more red than blue, but we have a very big
- 24:47chance here with Colin Allred. So I think that a lot of the
- 24:51reason why Kamala Harris and Beyoncé, we're in Texas is also
- 24:55to make sure Colin Allred gets elected.
- 24:59So there's so many things to think about here.
- 25:02And if you are as big and powerful as like Beyoncé and
- 25:05Taylor Swift, they're thinking about these.
- 25:08And you have to think about it, 'cause everything you do makes a
- 25:11difference, which is so annoying that you have to be so careful
- 25:13and perfect. That's what women, especially
- 25:15women of color, have to deal with.
- 25:17So let's talk about how if Beyoncé and her endorsement of
- 25:21Harrison, especially using her song Freedom, make makes a
- 25:25difference at all in this election?
- 25:27So Bowling Green State University professor David J
- 25:29Jackson told Vox, he said even though the effects are generally
- 25:33thought as modest for celebrity endorsements in this election,
- 25:37it's different in elections that turn on a small amount of votes
- 25:39in a handful of swing states, any effect can be significant.
- 25:43We're not just thinking about Michigan.
- 25:44We're not just thinking about Pennsylvania, right?
- 25:46Like any of these states, it's going to come down to these
- 25:49small, small numbers. This is why it's so important
- 25:52for you to vote. And Beyoncé, she has 314 million
- 25:56Instagram followers. Taylor Swift has 283.
- 26:01So Beyoncé has even a larger Instagram audience than Taylor
- 26:04Swift. This is a huge voting bloc.
- 26:08So there's people that are like, I don't know, like, I don't know
- 26:11what to do. Maybe I'm just not tuned in.
- 26:13Maybe people are just overwhelmed with all the
- 26:14politics of everything. Even a few of these people
- 26:19having Beyoncé say, listen, this is an important election, you
- 26:22need to vote. That can make a difference.
- 26:25Guys, let's talk about Chapel Roan.
- 26:27I, OK, I've been avoiding this subject because I do think
- 26:34people have not necessarily avoided the root of the issue,
- 26:38which is like Palestine and politics and Kamala Harris's
- 26:43campaign and all of that. I never want to avoid that.
- 26:47But I have been avoiding Chapel Rome's comments.
- 26:50I don't think I need to say on like TikTok.
- 26:52I think people get crazy. So we're going to talk about it
- 26:55on this podcast where less people are going to give me
- 26:57insane hateful comments. One of the reasons why I left my
- 27:02last political job, which I'm not going to disclose, I was a
- 27:07political consultant, a senior political consultant advising
- 27:10specific candidates and campaigns on messaging and
- 27:15research based on opposition research I was doing, unlike
- 27:18conservatives, right? So all this is based on
- 27:21messaging. The reason why I left is because
- 27:29I was faced with this like moral decision that so many, not so
- 27:33many. Every single Democrat in office,
- 27:36every single one local office, city office, mid level office,
- 27:42president, like everything president, business, every
- 27:47single one is receiving 8 pack money.
- 27:51Money from Israel right and their conservative political
- 27:55pack that is documentedly conservative.
- 28:00The influence that Israel has on American politics is pretty vast
- 28:05and witnessing candidates that I was working for and working with
- 28:14have literally no second thoughts on what to talk about
- 28:18when it came to on what their stance was when it came to
- 28:21Palestine. And Israel literally pushed me
- 28:23out of politics. I couldn't do it anymore because
- 28:25I felt like I had no hope in politicians.
- 28:29Even AOC takes 8 pack money. It is so messed up what we're
- 28:35seeing in American politics right now that there's like
- 28:38literally 0 empathy and then we have no room for discourse about
- 28:42this. You can be so pro Palestine and
- 28:47vote for Kamala Harris. Not to say that she's pro
- 28:51Palestine. I disagree with like how this
- 28:54administration is handling it completely.
- 28:56And the fact that we still send money to Israel and to arm
- 29:00Israel is absolutely fucking ridiculous.
- 29:05And I know that we are not going to change this system.
- 29:10If Donald Trump is president, we will have no ability to lobby
- 29:15the government. I've also lobbied Congress.
- 29:18We've we will have no ability to lobby the government.
- 29:21We will not even have a democracy.
- 29:23OK, coupled with the fact that women are going to lose
- 29:26reproductive rights across the board, we're going to lose the
- 29:29Department of Education. Trans kids are even going to be
- 29:31more at risk, right? That's why I believe that we
- 29:33need to vote for Kamala Harris. We will have more of ability to
- 29:40like, rid Israel's imperialistic genocidal effect out of American
- 29:49politics if Kamala Harris is president, more so than if
- 29:52Donald Trump is president. I want Kamala Harris to be
- 29:55president and I need her to wake the fuck up.
- 29:57And the only way we're going to have government that's
- 30:00sympathetic to Palestinians is if Kamala Harris is.
- 30:05There is not a vote that you can cast that will save Palestinian
- 30:09lives. This is a fact.
- 30:11You just can't. Not at this stake in the
- 30:13election. We will have to use other means
- 30:16for that. There is a vote that will save
- 30:18black immigrant women and LGBTQ lives in America.
- 30:22And I still think that that's worth casting.
- 30:26And we can still hold our anger for Palestine.
- 30:30So if you, I may just be preaching to the choir right
- 30:34now, but if you have people in your lives that you think are
- 30:38sending out this election, are considering voting third party
- 30:42because of this, I totally hear you.
- 30:47And please send them this podcast or send them this clip
- 30:51or talk to them because every vote is important.
- 30:55And there are people that like will be coming out of the
- 31:00woodwork for Donald Trump. So we need every single person
- 31:02to vote for Kamala Harris. Kamala Harris doesn't have to be
- 31:04your best friend. You don't even have to like any
- 31:07for policies. It's about voting for one of the
- 31:10people that will be president. OK, let's talk about chaperone.
- 31:13So if you guys didn't see. So that's my hot take pretty
- 31:16much that I think Chaparron was completely misguided and she
- 31:18shouldn't have said what she said.
- 31:21Chaparron. So there's been a lot of
- 31:25controversy. I'm not going to talk about
- 31:26like, I think it's totally fair for her to set boundaries with
- 31:28her fans and like prioritize her mental health.
- 31:30That's not even about this. This is about her political
- 31:32statement. She is a new artist that
- 31:34obviously rose to fame very, very quickly.
- 31:39I'm not going to touch on too much about travel.
- 31:41I don't really talk about her much on my TikTok, mostly
- 31:44because like we have like mutual friends.
- 31:46Do you think politics and like her stance on politics is really
- 31:49important to comment on? So she first made a statement
- 31:54where she said there's problems on both sides and that she's not
- 31:56going to endorse a candidate, right?
- 31:59It's totally fair to say there's problems on both sides.
- 32:02But to say that without endorsing Kamala Harris, I think
- 32:06it's incredibly dangerous. I also think she kind of came
- 32:12about it in a little bit of a careless way.
- 32:14She's very focused on people like, I love Chapel.
- 32:16I'm a huge fan. She's very focused on making
- 32:20sure they refer to her correctly and saying like calling her
- 32:23Chapel in public and not calling her Kaylee.
- 32:27And then she like and then she incorrectly pronounced Kamala
- 32:32Harris's name. She said I'm folk fucking quote.
- 32:35She said quote. I'm fucking voting for Kamala
- 32:37saying Kamala. There's racial implications of
- 32:40that to say to do your research and then not know how to
- 32:43pronounce the first potentially black woman president.
- 32:48I think is careless and has huge implications on this election.
- 32:54The other thing is that she said, of course, I have
- 32:56encouraged people to use critical thinking skills to
- 32:58learn about what they're voting for, who they're voting for and
- 33:01ask questions. So fair.
- 33:04But then she says, I'm not voting for Trump.
- 33:06And yes, I will be voting for Kamala, but I'm not endorsing
- 33:09her. There's a difference between
- 33:10endorsing and voting, for sure. But like when you're publicly
- 33:14saying about voting for someone, that's kind of an endorsement.
- 33:16So she kind of did endorse her. Everything she's saying I
- 33:21actually agree with of like using your critical thinking
- 33:25skills and like wishing that Kamala Harris wasn't arming
- 33:29Israel and all these things, but still voting for Kamala.
- 33:32So fair. However, my biggest issue is how
- 33:36she went about it. Mispronouncing Kamala Harris's
- 33:38name, I think is like a microaggression.
- 33:41And also saying to vote local. She says vote, use your vote.
- 33:47Vote small, vote for what's going on in your city.
- 33:51That's such a very good point. In any other election, I would
- 33:54say, yeah, like usually voting small is more impactful.
- 33:58Not in this election. To say to not tell people to
- 34:01vote in the presidential election is really damaging.
- 34:04And that's my hot take. Love Chapel.
- 34:08You could you guys can disagree with me, but and like I
- 34:12appreciate that she's like voting for Kamala, but to not
- 34:15tell people to vote public when you're talking about politics is
- 34:20a little careless. That's my thought.
- 34:22This is why it's so hard to be a celebrity.
- 34:25Like I totally understand. But you have this huge, huge
- 34:28platform and you have to consider like how what you're
- 34:31saying and look what the impact of it will be.
- 34:34And I just really hope there's people that saw that, that are
- 34:38hopefully not just going to like not vote in the presidential
- 34:41election because this is so important.
- 34:43I know she talks about LGBTQ rights and trans kids.
- 34:46And the Democrat Democratic Party is not doing enough right
- 34:48now. Trans kids and LGBTQ kids are
- 34:51going to be, are going to die because of Trump's policies.
- 34:55And the only way that we can make sure that this is a country
- 34:59that would like, seize trans and LGBTQ people's people is by
- 35:04voting Kamala Harris, not by staying out of this election,
- 35:07because staying out of the election, Donald Trump wins.
- 35:10That's just a fact. So that's my hot take.
- 35:15Love you, Chapel. But I think that her words could
- 35:19have been constructed a little bit differently.
- 35:22And I think it's really important for celebrities right
- 35:25now, especially with the disillusionment, the
- 35:29disillusionment on the left. And I think it's so fair.
- 35:32Like Trump has been running for like 10 years now.
- 35:36But we need to remember how important this election is.
- 35:38And then it comes down to young people.
- 35:40The election is literally next week.
- 35:43So please vote. And the only way we can push for
- 35:47the changes we want in our government is to have a
- 35:49democracy. And the only, the only way we're
- 35:51going to have a democracy is if Kamala Harris wins.
- 35:54So vote for Kamala and yeah, next week I'm going to have a
- 36:01just a little bit of a shorter episode.
- 36:04It's going to be Election Day. So I doubt people are going to
- 36:06really want to like listen to gasp the pod, but like, you
- 36:09know, go crazy If you want to listen.
- 36:11I'll have like a very short episode.
- 36:13I'm going to be talking about like how Trump and Russia is
- 36:16like possibly paying right wing influencers.
- 36:19We'll talk about Bryce Hall and all those motherfuckers.
- 36:22And then we're going to get back into our usually scheduled pop
- 36:25culture. We're not going to use our
- 36:27brains for a few weeks because life has been hard.
- 36:31The election has been weighing on people like things are
- 36:34expensive, things are crazy. Let's get into some juice.
- 36:38And I have some very exciting guests coming on, some gaylors
- 36:43that you guys might be familiar with from the Internet.
- 36:46We're talking literally as I speak about planning our
- 36:49episodes, so I'm very excited. I'm also going to have on my
- 36:52friend. We're going to talk about how
- 36:54Leonardo DiCaprio is probably a gay man.
- 36:57So yeah, we've got a lot of exciting stuff coming up.
- 37:00Please go vote if you haven't. I'm literally about to go return
- 37:03my ballot in the mail. Also, in terms of this podcast,
- 37:08if you've listened to like one or more episodes, let me know
- 37:12what you like, what you don't like.
- 37:14I've made a variety of different types of episodes.
- 37:17As you can see. I wanted to kind of see like
- 37:19what sticks and like what doesn't.
- 37:21So let me know which episode was your favorite.
- 37:24Yeah, just give me any feedback you can on my TikTok.
- 37:28You can join my Discord on YouTube comments anywhere you
- 37:32can reach me in my link tree. Just let me know what you think

- 37:41You guys are the best. Please hit subscribe even if you
- 37:44don't even use YouTube, even if you don't listen on YouTube
- 37:47because it makes a huge difference on this being like
- 37:49sustainable. Super excited for next week too.
- 37:53I let me and my girlfriend are going somewhere that we can't
- 37:55say yet, but we're very excited. And yeah, see you guys next
- 38:00week. Go vote.
- 38:03Bye, Gaspers.
