2:54
Speaker 2: welcome to the show, good morning. I never know when
2:57
Speaker 2: I start, because you know, with the two. Sometimes I
3:01
Speaker 2: say good morning when it's afternoon. Sometimes I say good afternoon.
3:04
Speaker 2: So I'm just going to start saying hello or good day,
3:08
Speaker 2: good day, good day.
3:09
Speaker 3: Hello.
3:10
Speaker 5: How are you I'm good.
3:11
Speaker 2: How are you you come? I'm doing fine. You come
3:13
Speaker 2: on with us every year, but for people who may
3:15
Speaker 2: not be aware, we'll talk about your specific event and
3:18
Speaker 2: some other things. Do what is Read Aloud West Virginia.
3:20
Speaker 5: Read Aloud West Virginia is a homegrown West Virginia nonprofit
3:23
Speaker 5: full of volunteers who motivate children to read for fun.
3:28
Speaker 2: And how difficult is that? Or is it difficult? Ad all?
3:31
Speaker 5: It depends on the kid.
3:33
Speaker 2: I guess it.
3:33
Speaker 5: Depends on the kid. It depends on the child's experience.
3:36
Speaker 5: It's a lot of fun to do because we do
3:39
Speaker 5: it through recruiting volunteers who we match with classrooms. They
3:43
Speaker 5: go into the classroom at the appointed time by the
3:45
Speaker 5: teacher every week and they read to the children just
3:48
Speaker 5: for pleasure. So kids all day have really important lessons
3:52
Speaker 5: to do that come with assessments and everything you remember
3:55
Speaker 5: from school. But then it's important to just slow down
3:58
Speaker 5: and read a book us because you enjoy it, just
4:01
Speaker 5: because you love football or you love baseball, or you
4:04
Speaker 5: love salamanders, or you love American history or whatever it is,
4:08
Speaker 5: or fiction, Charlotte's Web, whatever. And when we do that
4:12
Speaker 5: with kids, we model good fluent reading and then they
4:14
Speaker 5: get interested in the books that we share with them,
4:17
Speaker 5: and then we help put books in their hands and
4:20
Speaker 5: the next thing you know, when they have some time
4:22
Speaker 5: on their own, they're reading on their own, which builds
4:25
Speaker 5: their vocabulary, and they're reading comprehension, and then they're often
4:29
Speaker 5: running able to seize all the opportunities in life.
4:32
Speaker 2: And I think it's very important, and you and I
4:33
Speaker 2: talk about this every year that you're on with me.
4:36
Speaker 2: It's very important for people to realize that once you
4:38
Speaker 2: find something that they're interested in. You you mentioned football, salamanders,
4:43
Speaker 2: what they exactly whatody salamander fans are there?
4:46
Speaker 5: Well? We get requests for amphibian books probably one out
4:51
Speaker 5: of every two or three classrooms.
4:53
Speaker 3: You like what you like, you like.
4:54
Speaker 6: What you like.
4:55
Speaker 5: Xladel's are very hot right now? What isladles this little
5:00
Speaker 5: salamander that they're exotic looking, little pink thing with little
5:05
Speaker 5: proturberances around their head. They're they're just really popular with
5:08
Speaker 5: kids right now.
5:09
Speaker 2: It's like the end thing right now. See sometimes it's
5:11
Speaker 2: based on something out of a cartoon or a video
5:13
Speaker 2: game or something like that. So all right, we'll look
5:16
Speaker 2: into that at another time. You got this big event
5:19
Speaker 2: called rid A Palooza. Yah not talk about that.
5:21
Speaker 5: Yes, read a lot of us. Virginia is turning forty
5:24
Speaker 5: years old this year. We started with a group of
5:26
Speaker 5: canag County parents back in nineteen eighty six and about
5:29
Speaker 5: fifteen or so years ago we started this event called
5:32
Speaker 5: rit A Palooza, which is an opportunity for people to
5:35
Speaker 5: sponsor and support the program. Come together. We're selling tickets
5:39
Speaker 5: for forty five dollars online. We come together for two
5:42
Speaker 5: hours on April second, that's Thursday, from five thirty to
5:47
Speaker 5: seven thirty. We'll have a few drinks, we'll have eat
5:50
Speaker 5: a few more d'oures and talk about visit with each other.
5:54
Speaker 5: Read Aloud. Readers and volunteers and supporters love to talk
5:57
Speaker 5: about the program, the books we're reading, where we're going
6:01
Speaker 5: from here, it's just a nice party afterword.
6:03
Speaker 2: I mean I'm looking at it here. Yeah, it's going
6:05
Speaker 2: to be in the Irma Bird Gallery at the UC
6:07
Speaker 2: Wriggleman Hall, University of Charleston. And you got to ordures
6:11
Speaker 2: and drinks, and you've got to this wine pole.
6:15
Speaker 5: Yes, we got a couple of little easy fundraisers there.
6:18
Speaker 5: We have donors to our board members, our friends. Some
6:23
Speaker 5: retailers here donate bottles of wine, all of which are
6:27
Speaker 5: worth twenty dollars or more, and then they're all masked.
6:30
Speaker 5: They're in a pretty bag and then you pay twenty
6:33
Speaker 5: dollars to read aloud for a random number, and so
6:37
Speaker 5: you get to pull this random bottle of wine and
6:39
Speaker 5: it might be a twenty five dollars bottle of wine
6:41
Speaker 5: or it might be a fifty dollars bottle of wine,
6:42
Speaker 5: so you get the value back in any case, and
6:45
Speaker 5: it creates a little fun in buzz and oh what
6:48
Speaker 5: did you get? So it's just a fun sort of
6:50
Speaker 5: little party game and a little fundraiser for us.
6:52
Speaker 2: And you got music going on too.
6:54
Speaker 7: Yes.
6:54
Speaker 5: Jordan Dyer he came last year and he was so
6:57
Speaker 5: wonderful and we were really thrilled that he agreed to come.
7:00
Speaker 5: He said he enjoyed our event and liked it, and
7:02
Speaker 5: so he agreed to come back and play for us.
7:05
Speaker 2: Talking to Don Miller again, the executive director of Read
7:07
Speaker 2: Aloud West Virginia. Rita Palooza is happening Thursday. I guess
7:11
Speaker 2: it's one week from one week from today, five thirty
7:14
Speaker 2: to seven thirty on the campus of the University of
7:16
Speaker 2: Charles of a Dave Island Show and five eighty Live
7:18
Speaker 2: brought you in part by Generations Forward the hurricane Great

Speaker 2: deals continue on their selection of used vehicles, shopping compare
7:23

7:26
Speaker 2: need service, ask about their works package and their pickup
7:29
Speaker 2: and delivery service to check them out today, just off
7:30
Speaker 2: the hurricane exit of I sixty four to one destination
7:33
Speaker 2: for every Generation Generations Forward Seat Dealer for details. We'll
7:36
Speaker 2: get back to more Rita Palooza here in just a
7:40
Speaker 2: few months give you all the details on that. But
7:42
Speaker 2: what else is on your mind today?
7:44
Speaker 5: What else is on my mind? I cannot get off
7:47
Speaker 5: my mind the success we are having with a book
7:50
Speaker 5: distribution we created two years ago called book Bundles. This
7:54
Speaker 5: is how I know about the ax Lodels. We found
7:57
Speaker 5: some research that says when you give kids multiple bookooks
8:00
Speaker 5: on the same subject, and it's a subject they're passionate about,
8:04
Speaker 5: and those books, some are easy and some are a
8:06
Speaker 5: little more difficult, they're reading. Comprehension in that subject not
8:09
Speaker 5: only increases, but it increases faster than if we gave
8:13
Speaker 5: them books all on their reading level on different subjects.
8:17
Speaker 5: This amazed us, so we started asking kids, what subject
8:19
Speaker 5: would you like to have and would you like to
8:21
Speaker 5: know what West Virginia kids choose When you ask them
8:24
Speaker 5: what they choose basketball and drawing, and football, and hunting
8:31
Speaker 5: and fishing, and cats and dogs and some horses.
8:35
Speaker 2: Probably I could have guessed that, yeah, exactly.
8:38
Speaker 5: But when you typically give kids books, we still give
8:41
Speaker 5: out a lot of fiction, and children ask for that.
8:44
Speaker 5: Sometimes they ask for scary books.
8:46
Speaker 2: They asked for.
8:46
Speaker 5: American history and world history. One time last year a
8:50
Speaker 5: kid asked me for books on the Black Death, so
8:53
Speaker 5: they were interested in a certain era of you know,
8:55
Speaker 5: the plague in Europe. But when you find these books
8:59
Speaker 5: and you get the five books on this subject, what
9:01
Speaker 5: we see in the classrooms is the kids open up
9:03
Speaker 5: their little bundles of books and they immediately dive into them.
9:07
Speaker 5: They hoop, they squeal, they hold them up and show
9:10
Speaker 5: their friends. They say things. I literally had a volunteer
9:13
Speaker 5: tell me after she had distributed these books. She said,
9:16
Speaker 5: one of the boys said, I finally have books I
9:18
Speaker 5: really want.
9:20
Speaker 2: And that's that child.
9:22
Speaker 5: Is going home and looking at books when nobody's nagging
9:24
Speaker 5: him to. He doesn't have to be a signed reading
9:27
Speaker 5: on whatever that subject was, because his innate curiosity is
9:32
Speaker 5: driving him to go spend time with that, and when
9:34
Speaker 5: he does that, he is learning new words on the
9:38
Speaker 5: easy books, carrying that knowledge over into the more difficult books,
9:42
Speaker 5: so that when he goes to school when somebody there's
9:44
Speaker 5: a reference to something, or he has background knowledge which
9:48
Speaker 5: will then enable him to seize on the lessons that
9:51
Speaker 5: he encounters at school and build more knowledge and more
9:54
Speaker 5: skills and do all the things that we want our.
9:57
Speaker 2: Kids to be able to do. You know my place
10:00
Speaker 2: to question educators, right, because you know that's certainly not
10:03
Speaker 2: my place. But I have always wondered, and I understand
10:06
Speaker 2: that when you go to school, you know you whether
10:09
Speaker 2: it's public school or private school, or homeschool or college
10:13
Speaker 2: or whatever the case may be, you have to study
10:15
Speaker 2: things that you don't necessarily want to. But when it
10:17
Speaker 2: comes to reading, I have always and again not my
10:19
Speaker 2: place to question the education system, but I have always
10:22
Speaker 2: questioned assigning people. And we want kids to know the classics,
10:26
Speaker 2: but let's face it, a lot of us when we
10:27
Speaker 2: were in school went through about the first five pages
10:31
Speaker 2: and just said, I don't like this, and I know
10:33
Speaker 2: that they. I did the same thing with the math
10:35
Speaker 2: book too, but that's another story for another time. It
10:37
Speaker 2: sunded up in radio. But I've always questioned that. I mean,
10:40
Speaker 2: you know, if I've always thought, if you're reading something
10:44
Speaker 2: that you that you like, I understand you want wanted
10:47
Speaker 2: them to learn the class and do you understand where
10:49
Speaker 2: I'm going to this. I've always thought that was kind
10:52
Speaker 2: of weird.
10:53
Speaker 5: Davey put your finger right on it, and I think
10:55
Speaker 5: it is our place to constructively question what's going on.
10:59
Speaker 5: So what we understand and better today. Brain science is amazing,
11:02
Speaker 5: Behavioral research is amazing. It's come on a lot in
11:05
Speaker 5: the last forty years, and you need both. There are
11:08
Speaker 5: times when we need to study things we don't particularly enjoy.
11:12
Speaker 5: But if you only get that, then all that you
11:16
Speaker 5: learn about school and learning is that you don't like it.
11:18
Speaker 5: But if when possible, the child who is really fascinated
11:23
Speaker 5: by extreme weather can read on that, and the child
11:26
Speaker 5: who really wants to read European history can read that,
11:29
Speaker 5: and the childhood know exactly and it really makes a
11:34
Speaker 5: difference in that relationship, in the attitude that that child
11:37
Speaker 5: spends with books. There's also a time and a place
11:39
Speaker 5: for fiction.
11:40
Speaker 8: A lot of what's has.
11:41
Speaker 5: Been assigned in school is fiction, which is fantastic. But
11:44
Speaker 5: in that period when you first learn to read and
11:46
Speaker 5: you're eight, nine, ten years old, and you're curious about
11:49
Speaker 5: everything and you're just a sponge just trying to just
11:53
Speaker 5: trying to absorb knowledge, we should lean into that and
11:56
Speaker 5: maybe save some fiction for share times, bedtime reading aloud
12:02
Speaker 5: as a class, rather than assigning a fiction book that
12:05
Speaker 5: a kid's not really interested in.
12:07
Speaker 2: It is it's balanced in your opinion, Does it matter
12:09
Speaker 2: whether they're reading the classic book or whether it's online,
12:14
Speaker 2: a kindle or something.
12:15
Speaker 5: Like that doesn't have anything to do with my opinion. Okay,
12:19
Speaker 5: the best science we know right now, the paper books
12:22
Speaker 5: are better for our brains, and the younger you are,
12:25
Speaker 5: the more that's true. Now that might change as more
12:29
Speaker 5: is discovered. But for small children in particular, paper books
12:33
Speaker 5: are better. But there's even some indication that adults, our
12:36
Speaker 5: brains behave differently. Handwriting with crayons and pencils causes our
12:42
Speaker 5: brain to react differently into store knowledge differently than tapping
12:46
Speaker 5: and swiping on a device. I use devices all day long,
12:50
Speaker 5: but there's something about our developing brains when we're kids
12:53
Speaker 5: that things that we hold in their hands and write
12:56
Speaker 5: and read on paper. The indications right now are that
13:00
Speaker 5: that is better for us.
13:01
Speaker 3: All right.
13:02
Speaker 2: Don Meller, executive director Read Aloud West Virginia, give us
13:05
Speaker 2: all the details again on read a Palooza.
13:06

16:23
Speaker 2: We're gonna talk Reds baseball coming up a little bit
16:25
Speaker 2: later on. Let's welcome and our good friend Joe Stevens
16:27
Speaker 2: from the City of Nitro. Good morning, sir, How are you?
16:32
Speaker 9: Good morning, sir? Put me in coach that day we
16:36
Speaker 9: all love.
16:38
Speaker 2: It is opening day and I know baseball started last night,
16:40
Speaker 2: but it's not Opening day till till till the Reds play.
16:44
Speaker 9: Yeah, I did not. Yeah, come on the Sankyes, don't
16:47
Speaker 9: open up baseball the stankies.
16:49
Speaker 3: Is that what you called them?
16:51
Speaker 9: You got it, you.
16:52
Speaker 2: Got So who do your Orioles have in one of
16:54
Speaker 2: the prospects for this season?
16:57
Speaker 9: Three o'clock to night, three o'clock to say afternoon in
16:59
Speaker 9: the newly renovated Camden Yards in Baltimore. They will be
17:04
Speaker 9: hosting the Minnesota Twinkies. That is opening game, and I
17:09
Speaker 9: can't wait to get up to the ballpark. A lot
17:11
Speaker 9: of a lot of renovations that have taken place, and
17:14
Speaker 9: it looks pretty good. You never can have too much pitching,
17:18
Speaker 9: but they did some off season acquisitions and look for
17:22
Speaker 9: the starting staff's got some possibilities. And then we got
17:25
Speaker 9: Pete Alonzo playing first base now and in that home
17:28
Speaker 9: run friendly ballpark of Candon Yards, I like to see
17:32
Speaker 9: about fifty five or sixty you'd ever know. But you know,
17:35
Speaker 9: we're all starting even though the Sankies did win last night,
17:38
Speaker 9: we're all starting out zero and zero. And it's only
17:43
Speaker 9: up from here from after a last season. Hey, by
17:46
Speaker 9: the way, you've got mister Jenkins and Cook coming on
17:50
Speaker 9: to rent baseball. Just a side note. On April the eighteenth,
17:55
Speaker 9: here in the city of Nitro, Chris Sabo, a member
17:58
Speaker 9: of the nineteen ninety Cincinnati Reds, World Series championship team
18:04
Speaker 9: will be coming be the grand marshal for the Nitro
18:08
Speaker 9: Little League Parade opening season parade. Then he will be
18:11
Speaker 9: throwing out the first baseball pitch and softball pitch for
18:15
Speaker 9: the Little league folks, and then we'll be at the
18:19
Speaker 9: Nitro Baseball Card Show signing autographs from noon until two.
18:24
Speaker 9: I have been asked by numerous people if he will
18:27
Speaker 9: be wearing his goggles. I don't know. It is going
18:31
Speaker 9: to be a request and we'll see. But Chris Sabo
18:35
Speaker 9: of the nineteen ninety World champion Cincinnati Reds and a
18:38
Speaker 9: member of the nineteen ninety four Baltimore Oils, as it
18:41
Speaker 9: may be, will be in Nitro on April the eighteenth, Davo.
18:46
Speaker 2: I'm very excited about that, and I'll make sure I
18:48
Speaker 2: would say that those three already know about it, but
18:50
Speaker 2: if not, I'll make sure that they do, and almost
18:54
Speaker 2: one other thing about baseball, and then I'll move on
18:56
Speaker 2: to while you're actually here. I remember a time when
18:59
Speaker 2: Camden Yard, I mean Camden Yards was kind of a
19:02
Speaker 2: huge deal when when it was opened back in the
19:05
Speaker 2: day because it kind of it was one of the
19:07
Speaker 2: first stadiums that got away from that cookie cutter, god
19:10
Speaker 2: awful stadiums that everybody had in the nineteen seventies. Think Riverfront,
19:14
Speaker 2: think Three Rivers, you know those those type stadiums. And
19:17
Speaker 2: Camden was one of the ones. And when did it open,
19:20
Speaker 2: Like ninety three or something like that, do you four
19:23
Speaker 2: ninety four?
19:23
Speaker 9: Okay?
19:23
Speaker 2: I thought, yeah, the ninety four and that opened up,
19:26
Speaker 2: and it was like revolutionary because everything that was old
19:30
Speaker 2: is new again when that. And it's hard to believe
19:32
Speaker 2: that it's been that many years since Camden Yards opened.
19:36
Speaker 9: And one of these days I hope so that my
19:40
Speaker 9: kid and myself will be able to enjoy a winning
19:43
Speaker 9: playoff game in Camden Yard, since we do have a
19:47
Speaker 9: losing streak going into double digits. So yes, I think
19:52
Speaker 9: it revolutionary. It was revolutionary as in the fan experience
19:57
Speaker 9: for Major League Baseball.
19:58
Speaker 4: Indeed it is.
19:59
Speaker 2: We're talking to Joe C from the City of Nitro.
20:01
Speaker 2: We'll get off baseball, but we'll go back to it
20:03
Speaker 2: with Jenkins and Jim Workman and Coop a little bit
20:05
Speaker 2: later on. You know, Joe, no other city that I
20:08
Speaker 2: know does more dissolute veterans than the city of Nitro does.
20:11
Speaker 2: And you have something coming up on Monday, Welcome Home
20:14
Speaker 2: to Vietnam Veterans, but it's actually open to all veterans.
20:16
Speaker 2: Talk about this event.
20:19
Speaker 9: Well, it's an annual event by legislature. By it was
20:24
Speaker 9: deemed through legislation in the West Virginia legislature that on
20:29
Speaker 9: March the thirtieth, annually an event would be held to
20:33
Speaker 9: welcome home Vietnam veterans. And like you said, Dave, it
20:37
Speaker 9: is open to all veterans, but it is really focused
20:40
Speaker 9: on the welcoming home the Vietnam veterans. They when they
20:45
Speaker 9: came home from Vietnam, they didn't get the greeting that
20:48
Speaker 9: a lot of the servicemen deserved and get today. So
20:52
Speaker 9: it's just it's a reminder of that. And we've been
20:56
Speaker 9: proud to be able to be asked to host it
20:59
Speaker 9: and the event, and this is the third year that
21:01
Speaker 9: we have hosted the last two years and now this year.
21:05
Speaker 9: But it doesn't matter if March thirtieth is on a Sunday, Monday, Wednesday,
21:09
Speaker 9: whatever day of the week, they will celebrate it. And
21:13
Speaker 9: we are doing that this coming Monday.
21:14
Speaker 2: And again it is open to all veterans. And you
21:17
Speaker 2: talked about this. I was having a conversation last night.
21:20
Speaker 2: It was Texan back with a friend of mine who's
21:22
Speaker 2: a military you know, he's around my age, but he
21:23
Speaker 2: served in the military, and we just had this conversation
21:26
Speaker 2: going last night about what the Vietnam veterans, of which
21:30
Speaker 2: everybody knows. You know, my father was one the response
21:35
Speaker 2: that they got when they came when they came back,
21:38
Speaker 2: and it was it was not. It was not World
21:41
Speaker 2: War two ticker tape parade when a lot of the
21:44
Speaker 2: Vietnam veterans came back.
21:45
Speaker 3: Joe, No, it wasn't.
21:47
Speaker 9: I had three brothers that served during the Vietnam War.
21:51
Speaker 9: In fact, I had one brother in the USS Forestall
21:54
Speaker 9: when it actually blew up, and we didn't even know
21:57
Speaker 9: he was he made it through the exploit and until
22:00
Speaker 9: we saw him carrying litters on the deck of the
22:04
Speaker 9: forest All. But I remember when my brothers would come
22:08
Speaker 9: home that they quickly got out of their uniforms and
22:12
Speaker 9: really because of what people would indicate or say to
22:16
Speaker 9: them and that sort of thing. But you're right, Dave,
22:18
Speaker 9: but the event on Monday is totally one hundred and
22:21
Speaker 9: eighty degrees of that. It is a celebration of that
22:24
Speaker 9: wartime era. It starts on about ten am at the
22:29
Speaker 9: Living Memorial Park in Nitro, right there at the corner
22:33
Speaker 9: of twenty first Street and Second Avenue. That's the City
22:36
Speaker 9: Hall and then Nitro Antique Mall. It's right there. Well.
22:39
Speaker 9: The event starts at ten o'clock and we'll go to
22:42
Speaker 9: one thirty. There'll be some vendors out here. A neat thing, Dave,
22:46
Speaker 9: is that a lot of the vendors. When I say vendors.
22:51
Speaker 9: The Veterans Assistance of West Virginia will be here, the
22:55
Speaker 9: Woody Williams VA Hospital folks will be here. There will
22:59
Speaker 9: be a lot of veterans organizations here being able to
23:02
Speaker 9: answer questions, not only for the Vietnam veterans, but like
23:05
Speaker 9: you said, for all the veterans that will be an attendance.
23:08
Speaker 9: So it's an overall type of information service and a
23:12
Speaker 9: celebration of that wartime era. One really keynote the keynote
23:17
Speaker 9: speaker again this year, as he has been the last
23:20
Speaker 9: couple of years. He is now the retired president of
23:24
Speaker 9: the UMWA, and that's Cecil Roberts. If you have not
23:27
Speaker 9: heard Cecil Roberts speak, my goodness, gracious, I know you
23:31
Speaker 9: being a Logan boy David. You've heard him speak numerous times,
23:36
Speaker 9: but he rocks the crowd. He brings it home.
23:39
Speaker 2: I have always said that, if you know, mister Roberts
23:42
Speaker 2: is retired now, I've interviewed him several several times, but
23:45
Speaker 2: I have always said that, as bizarre's this may sound,
23:48
Speaker 2: I think when I die, I want Cecil Roberts to
23:50
Speaker 2: do my funeral.
23:51
Speaker 9: I really do, because I think he didn't miss as
23:55
Speaker 9: calling as being a union organizer and fighting for the
24:00
Speaker 9: lights of his workers. But if he stood up in
24:04
Speaker 9: a pumpit at a church, people would be listening.
24:06
Speaker 13: Oh.
24:06
Speaker 2: Absolutely. We're talking to Joe Stevens from the city of
24:08
Speaker 2: Nitro about this big event that is going to be happy.
24:11
Speaker 2: This sort of a welcome home to Vietnam veterans but
24:14
Speaker 2: open to all veterans, will be held on Monday therein Nitro.
24:17
Speaker 2: Starts at ten am at the Nitro Living Memorial Park.
24:21
Speaker 2: One of the great things, Joe, that I like about
24:22
Speaker 2: when you guys do these sorts of events for veterans.
24:25
Speaker 2: And again, no city, in my opinion, with all due
24:27
Speaker 2: respect to all the others, no city in the state
24:29
Speaker 2: of West Virginia, maybe in the country, does more for
24:31
Speaker 2: veterans of what Nitro does. I mean, it was a
24:33
Speaker 2: city that was born out of that. One of the
24:36
Speaker 2: things I like that you folks do there is that
24:39
Speaker 2: when you have these events, it's not just like you know,
24:42
Speaker 2: a parade, or it's not just like a speaker. A
24:45
Speaker 2: lot of valuable information available in one spot for veterans
24:49
Speaker 2: right there. They don't have to make an appointment. They
24:51
Speaker 2: don't have to drive anywhere other than to Nitro. I mean,
24:53
Speaker 2: they don't have to go in some big hospital or whatever. Everything.
24:56
Speaker 2: You got a lot of stuff, Joe available right there
25:00
Speaker 2: during this event.
25:01
Speaker 9: What the good thing is, Dave, you don't have to
25:04
Speaker 9: make a phone call and then push numbers to get
25:07
Speaker 9: this extension, that extension. This person or that person, the
25:11
Speaker 9: person that you need to talk to is right in
25:13
Speaker 9: front of you. You can ask questions and get answers
25:16
Speaker 9: on the spot. If not, they take your name and
25:19
Speaker 9: they get back to you. It's face to face. And
25:24
Speaker 9: you and I both grew up with that, and it
25:27
Speaker 9: is so accommodating to some of these folks because some
25:30
Speaker 9: of these veterans, like myself, is technically challenged and sometimes
25:35
Speaker 9: just can't get through. And you get frustrated not being
25:38
Speaker 9: able to get to a real person and they give up.
25:41
Speaker 9: Well you don't have to give up. You just come
25:43
Speaker 9: here on Monday between ten and one thirty or so
25:46
Speaker 9: and you can get your questions answered face to face.
25:50
Speaker 9: And that is so cool. And also, Dave, I just
25:52
Speaker 9: want to remind everybody we have the Nitro History and
25:54
Speaker 9: Wars Museum which is right there on twenty twentieth Street,
25:58
Speaker 9: right next to the park, that will be open from
26:01
Speaker 9: ten until seven o'clock on Monday. A lot of the
26:04
Speaker 9: veterans enjoy. We are the site of the West Virginia
26:09
Speaker 9: Vietnam War Memorial that is inside the museum, so we
26:13
Speaker 9: expect a pretty big crowd going into the museum. But
26:16
Speaker 9: that'll be open starting at ten o'clock and going until
26:19
Speaker 9: seven o'clock Monday night.
26:20
Speaker 2: Before we let you go, Joan, we'll go back and
26:23
Speaker 2: give you all the details in a moment. I won't
26:25
Speaker 2: want to give you an opportunity anything else going on
26:27
Speaker 2: to the city of Nitro that while you got the time
26:29
Speaker 2: here that you want to talk about.
26:30
Speaker 9: You know, we just kind of just sweep in the
26:32
Speaker 9: streets and getting ready for summertime. Riding now our lake is.
26:37
Speaker 9: We've been stocking it. We're expecting another stocking here real soon.
26:41
Speaker 9: Be het seeing a lot of hikers and mountain bikers
26:44
Speaker 9: out there. We've got twenty one miles of brand new trails.
26:47
Speaker 9: I mean Tracy Toller and his Adventures team. They've been
26:52
Speaker 9: out there and they've cut up some new trails and
26:56
Speaker 9: coming soon to ride now our lakes sometime soon will
27:00
Speaker 9: be a new disc golf course, but we'll give you
27:02
Speaker 9: those details coming up. Like everybody else, we're ready for
27:05
Speaker 9: the cold to get out and the warm to get
27:07
Speaker 9: in so we can get out and play.
27:08
Speaker 2: I never thought, Joe, in your other life, that I
27:10
Speaker 2: would ever hear you make a statement like that, because
27:13
Speaker 2: you're the guy who got on me big time because
27:15
Speaker 2: I referred to as junk a couple of years ago
27:17
Speaker 2: your association with the Ski Association. But I never thought
27:20
Speaker 2: i'd hear Joe Stevens say something like you were ready
27:22
Speaker 2: for warm weather.
27:24
Speaker 9: When the resorts are open and skiing.
27:27
Speaker 2: Ah, that's the difference.
27:30
Speaker 5: I gotch.
27:31
Speaker 9: I'll tell you what, I don't care what a bandit
27:33
Speaker 9: says about you. You catch you on quick.
27:36
Speaker 2: Yeah, I like it all right. So the event is
27:39
Speaker 2: going to be Monday, starts at ten am. Nitro Living
27:42
Speaker 2: Memorial Park, Second Avenue, twenty first Street starts at ten.
27:45
Speaker 2: It is a welcome home to Vietnam veterans, but it's
27:47
Speaker 2: open to all veterans. He Sol Roberts will be the
27:49
Speaker 2: keynote speaker. Lots of information, lots of good stuff going on.
27:53
Speaker 2: Everything's free to the public, so come on out and
27:55
Speaker 2: enjoy it. Joe, as always, we appreciate you being here
27:58
Speaker 2: and we'll talk again soon. And best of luck your
28:00

Speaker 2: All right, Opening day for the Rads. Who better to
32:08
Speaker 2: talk about it than three of the biggest Reds fans
32:10
Speaker 2: that I know. Jim Workman, head of the West Virginia
32:12
Speaker 2: Sports Writers Association, and Wally and Whippies. How you doing,
32:15
Speaker 2: my friend cood Well, thanks for the invite, And Dale
32:18
Speaker 2: Cooper and Jeff Jenkins. See hey, all right, good morning, fellows,
32:21
Speaker 2: welcome to the show. I don't know and you guys
32:23
Speaker 2: may already know this, but I had Joe Stevens on
32:24
Speaker 2: during the last segment. You know they're bringing in Chris
32:26
Speaker 2: Sabo for opening day there for the City of Nitro's
32:31
Speaker 2: little League. I guess on the eighteenth of April, Chris
32:35
Speaker 2: Sabo will be there. Your memories of Chris Sabo, Jeff
32:37
Speaker 2: Coop and Jim.
32:38
Speaker 7: Well nineteen ninety World Series right goggles, Yeah, goggles.
32:42
Speaker 2: Joe said that he's put a request in for Sable
32:45
Speaker 2: to bring the goggles.
32:46
Speaker 3: They should have Kurt Rambus too, and they could have
32:47
Speaker 3: like Goggle day.
32:49
Speaker 14: Sable was a heck of a player, Jim, he was Spuds,
32:52
Speaker 14: he was solid man right beside Barry Lark.
32:55
Speaker 18: And like you said, in the nineties.
32:56
Speaker 2: That team, I mean, everybody talks about the teams of
32:59
Speaker 2: the seventies and you know they probably wore a few
33:01
Speaker 2: of those were probably better, but there was was there
33:03
Speaker 2: a more exciting team to watch that nineteen ninety Reds team.
33:06
Speaker 3: When when you had all of the ingredients that were
33:08
Speaker 3: together there. I mean, Eric Davis is maybe a legendary
33:11
Speaker 3: talent that was lost to injuries. I mean his career
33:14
Speaker 3: arc still a very good player and retire as he retired,
33:17
Speaker 3: but he probably would have been, you know, maybe a
33:19
Speaker 3: top thirty player all time if he would have been
33:21
Speaker 3: healthy for his entire career. So, I mean that was
33:23
Speaker 3: certainly part of it. You know, you had the Jose
33:25
Speaker 3: Rio on that team and the role players that did
33:28
Speaker 3: so well to help me out. Billy Hatcher, I remember
33:30
Speaker 3: like he had a great year that year.
33:32
Speaker 7: That Don Duncan played second beats.
33:34
Speaker 3: That's the guy I was trying to think about yesterday with.
33:37
Speaker 7: Top day Zinger played first.
33:38
Speaker 3: Of course, Benzinger was great, and those teams, it was
33:41
Speaker 3: just that was a team that really did it all
33:43
Speaker 3: the Nasty Boys. We always forget about the Nasty Boys,
33:45
Speaker 3: it seems like, but that was really the thing for
33:47
Speaker 3: the team.
33:47
Speaker 7: You could shut it down after the seventh inning they
33:49
Speaker 7: were going to the Natcleus and nasty boys are so
33:51
Speaker 7: Charlton and Dibble and Myers on the back end of
33:55
Speaker 7: the bullpen. And what was great about that team and
33:59
Speaker 7: what we've missed for the last several years and maybe
34:02
Speaker 7: I don't know if we can get it this year
34:03
Speaker 7: or not, is a strong start by a Reds team.
34:06
Speaker 7: That team was like I want to I mean, they
34:08
Speaker 7: were really strong. I want to say, like I don't know,
34:11
Speaker 7: eleven and two or something like that. After the first,
34:14
Speaker 7: I mean they were really good and they were just
34:16
Speaker 7: a five hundred team or below the five hundred team
34:18
Speaker 7: in the second half of the season, the nineteen ninety team.
34:21
Speaker 7: But then they beat the Pirates, an up and coming
34:24
Speaker 7: Pirates team in the playoffs in five games I think
34:28
Speaker 7: it was five games. And then and then swept you know,
34:31
Speaker 7: they swept the Ace.
34:32
Speaker 3: And probably luxy for that nineties team that was back
34:34
Speaker 3: when you still just had the NLCS. And then the
34:37
Speaker 3: World Series're gonna have to get through a wild card
34:39
Speaker 3: round or multiple rounds, which frankly might have been a
34:42
Speaker 3: good thing for that team.
34:43
Speaker 7: But the Reds have not won a playoff series day
34:45
Speaker 7: since nineteen ninety five. Nineteen ninety five is the last
34:50
Speaker 7: time the Reds won a playoff series. And that one, yeah,
34:54
Speaker 7: nineteen ninety five, nineteen ninety five, and that was that
34:59
Speaker 7: was the either for the Divisionals when their business changed
35:02
Speaker 7: and they and they won series in nineteen ninety five.
35:05
Speaker 7: And in what twenty twelve they were head was at
35:08
Speaker 7: twenty ten to twenty ten, three to one, they were,
35:11
Speaker 7: they were up two, they were up two games two
35:16
Speaker 7: in the best of five series against the Giants. Won
35:19
Speaker 7: both of those games in San Francisco, came back home
35:22
Speaker 7: and got swept by the Giants who won the World Series.
35:24
Speaker 7: But they dropped three straight home. It's three straight games
35:27
Speaker 7: in Cincinnati. And that's really the closest taste since until
35:32
Speaker 7: you know, last year they got in the playoffs, got
35:34
Speaker 7: swept by the Doctors.
35:35
Speaker 3: There was the COVID year, but that was kind of
35:37
Speaker 3: the same as like, they didn't score single run. If
35:38
Speaker 3: I remember, I didn't score single run. What about this year?
35:42
Speaker 2: Now that's about this year.
35:43
Speaker 18: Well, let's also let's about the ninety season. Let's not
35:47
Speaker 18: forget probably my favorite manager, Loup Panillah. I mean, because
35:52
Speaker 18: of that fast start, they're known as the Wired to
35:54
Speaker 18: Wired champ.
35:55
Speaker 3: They were, so, yeah, pretty cool year.
35:56
Speaker 2: Somebody sent me a picture of the other day and
35:59
Speaker 2: I've seen I've actually we've seen it before and it
36:01
Speaker 2: was one of my friends just said getting ready for
36:03
Speaker 2: the season or whatever. It was a picture of Panela
36:04
Speaker 2: in the reds uniform with his feet propped up on
36:07
Speaker 2: the table with a pack of Marlboroughs and a bud
36:09
Speaker 2: light sitting the sudding. That was pretty much Panilla and
36:13
Speaker 2: we know it was the Nasty Boys.
36:15
Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I think this year's team that it should
36:18
Speaker 3: be exciting this year. I hope the Reds were so close.
36:22
Speaker 3: I think that last year they made the playoffs, but
36:24
Speaker 3: I think that there was a little bit of a
36:26
Speaker 3: sense of maybe what could have been, or maybe that
36:29
Speaker 3: it was a little because nobody had a good season.
36:31
Speaker 3: It seemed like like nobody for the Reds really had
36:32
Speaker 3: a great season last year. You know, Hunter Green had
36:35
Speaker 3: a good season when he was healthy, you know, but
36:37
Speaker 3: he was heard a lot last season. And you look
36:39
Speaker 3: at some of the young guys they brought up, but
36:40
Speaker 3: I mean like de La Cruz had kind of an
36:42
Speaker 3: off season, Spencer Steer had a little bit of an
36:44
Speaker 3: off season, Matt McClean didn't have the kind of season
36:46
Speaker 3: that people thought he was going to have, And that,
36:48
Speaker 3: right there is your core. You didn't get Martee he
36:50
Speaker 3: was he was suspended for a lot of the season,
36:54
Speaker 3: that's right. Yeah, so he just had kind of a Yeah,
36:56
Speaker 3: he was late getting to the to the party as
36:59
Speaker 3: far as of catching fire last year. So a lot
37:02
Speaker 3: of players are kind of a down year. So when
37:03
Speaker 3: you look at it this year and you're thinking, well,
37:06
Speaker 3: you know, dal La Cruz was hurt for two thirds
37:08
Speaker 3: of the season or whatever last year, and you had
37:09
Speaker 3: all these different things. So you wonder if you can
37:11
Speaker 3: capture lightning in a bottle. You got Genos Warrez back
37:14
Speaker 3: that can finally hit some home runs for you because
37:16
Speaker 3: the Reds have been power depleted since he left. Frankly,
37:19
Speaker 3: I mean, if de la Cruz isn't hitting home runs,
37:21
Speaker 3: nobody is for the Reds. So I mean they finally
37:23
Speaker 3: got somebody there, salth Stewart. We just had Jeff Erickson
37:27
Speaker 3: one yesterday, who's one of the premier Fantasy editors out there.
37:32
Speaker 3: He's he's a one Fantasy Awards for the last ten years,
37:36
Speaker 3: I think. But anyway, he's like that that one of
37:39
Speaker 3: the hottest guys in fantasy drafts right now are south Stewart.
37:41
Speaker 3: They they're adp or is just climbing like crazy because
37:44
Speaker 3: people think that this guy's going to be a monster.
37:46
Speaker 3: So you're starting to see what this Reds team. I
37:48
Speaker 3: think that if you start seeing a guy like if
37:51
Speaker 3: Sal Stewart and Gino and dal la Cruz and then
37:54
Speaker 3: you start getting production out of McLean again, suddenly that
37:57
Speaker 3: lineup gets a lot longer and gets a lot deeper,
38:00
Speaker 3: and you hope you can score some runs.
38:02
Speaker 2: Jim.
38:03
Speaker 18: You know, I think I agree with Dale about all
38:05
Speaker 18: those names that he mentioned. I think in the last
38:07
Speaker 18: couple of years, we've seen glimpses of, you know, really
38:11
Speaker 18: good players, and I think that's what Tito saw when
38:15
Speaker 18: he came back to the Red So I think this
38:17
Speaker 18: is the year that if everything falls into place, they
38:20
Speaker 18: can be in contention.
38:22
Speaker 7: So you've got to get pitching right. Pitching is number
38:25
Speaker 7: one here, and so what's concerning at the beginning of
38:27
Speaker 7: the years. Hunter Green is going to be out properly
38:30
Speaker 7: least until July and maybe to the first of August,
38:34
Speaker 7: so he won't be there for two thirds of the season,
38:37
Speaker 7: which that's your ace, that's you, that's your shutdown guys,
38:40
Speaker 7: So that's very disappointing. Now they are deep in starting pitching,
38:43
Speaker 7: but they're young. Lodolo's going to miss the first he's
38:46
Speaker 7: going to miss two starts, probably because his last Springs
38:49
Speaker 7: training start it was ninety five degrees in Arizona and
38:52
Speaker 7: he's had blister problems. He developed a blister, so he's
38:55
Speaker 7: on a disabled list, a retroactive DAT so he's going
38:57
Speaker 7: to be on for about twelve days. But they're hopefully
39:00
Speaker 7: He's going to be fine.
39:01
Speaker 13: Uh.
39:02
Speaker 7: Andrew Abbitt is the starting pitcher today on opening Day.
39:04
Speaker 7: He was named the name the starter a few weeks ago.
39:07
Speaker 7: He didn't have a really good spring training. Now you
39:09
Speaker 7: know spring training, you know you can throw a lot
39:12
Speaker 7: of that out. Hopefully he's Andrew Rabbit today and for
39:16
Speaker 7: this season they're going to need him to be. Brady
39:18
Speaker 7: Stinger is in the number two spot now. He's an
39:21
Speaker 7: innings eater, had a great year last year and he's
39:23
Speaker 7: just going to be consistent. And then you've got you've
39:26
Speaker 7: got the young guys. You got Burns and Rhet Louder,
39:33
Speaker 7: you know, two young guys. Louder coming off Tommy John surgery.
39:36
Speaker 7: Burns is going to be in there. He's still a rookie,
39:39
Speaker 7: but he pitched last year. And then then Williams Simpson, Yeah, Williamson,
39:44
Speaker 7: who had a real who's coming back also from Tommy
39:46
Speaker 7: John surgery. So we'll we'll see. We're hopeful. We're hopeful.
39:50
Speaker 7: I mean, these guys are good, they're young, and they're good,
39:52
Speaker 7: but hopefully, you know, you're going to have to have
39:55
Speaker 7: the pitching the back end of the bullpen where they
39:57
Speaker 7: strengthened the back end of the bullpen, which they spent
40:00
Speaker 7: some money there. And as you know, Matt McClain, the
40:04
Speaker 7: second baseman, had an off year last year after the
40:06
Speaker 7: shoulder surgery of the year before. They say it always
40:09
Speaker 7: takes a year to come back from that. He had
40:11
Speaker 7: a great spring training. Tied the Reds record for most
40:14
Speaker 7: home runs in the spring training with seven.
40:16
Speaker 3: And that's what happened his rookie year. He just he
40:18
Speaker 3: just made the team out of spring training because he
40:20
Speaker 3: crushed it in spring training.
40:21
Speaker 7: So hopefully that continues, right, And then you've got Suth Stewart,
40:24
Speaker 7: the rookie, as Coop mentioned that everybody's excited about he's
40:27
Speaker 7: going to be playing first base. In fact that they
40:29
Speaker 7: didn't have a Retz caravan this year, but the two
40:31
Speaker 7: prior year, south Stewart was here in Charleston and we
40:35
Speaker 7: had him on the air here on five ad w
40:36
Speaker 7: C CHS. So looking forward to that. You got Hayes
40:40
Speaker 7: at third base, Della Crue, you know, La and short stuff.
40:43
Speaker 7: Hopefully he's in for a huge year, going to stay healthy.
40:47
Speaker 7: And they've added some outfield pieces, so you know, and
40:50
Speaker 7: you got swore As at third base well d H and.
40:53
Speaker 3: Dirty Yeah, I mean, kee bro On Hayes might be.
40:57
Speaker 3: I mean, he's going to get plenty of plan time,
40:59
Speaker 3: but he's not going to be like you're not going
41:00
Speaker 3: to put him in every single day at third base
41:02
Speaker 3: to be moving around here.
41:03
Speaker 7: He's the best defender, no question. He's the best probably
41:06
Speaker 7: maybe the best defender in baseball. So you hate to
41:09
Speaker 7: take him out of there much. But he's got to
41:11
Speaker 7: hit a little bit, so hopefully you'll hit some.
41:13
Speaker 3: They might do some of those late ending replacements with
41:15
Speaker 3: him and stuff like that too, because I know Tito
41:16
Speaker 3: likes to do that.
41:17
Speaker 2: Yeah, but the textasys seem the Reds have had bad
41:19
Speaker 2: luctions to classic Riverfront Stadium was demolished. Is a coincidence
41:25
Speaker 2: there's at Riverfront Stadium.
41:26
Speaker 3: Too, I can tell you there's that a lot of
41:28
Speaker 3: people thought that Griffy would have a lot better time
41:30
Speaker 3: at Great American Ballpark because you know, that was the
41:32
Speaker 3: that was the park that he was supposed to play in.
41:34
Speaker 3: You know that right field Port was built for me
41:36
Speaker 3: and it didn't quite work out the way it was
41:37
Speaker 3: supposed to.
41:38
Speaker 2: Who's the one player that you're most excited about this season? Jim?
41:42
Speaker 18: You know, I think i'd like to see Ellie play
41:44
Speaker 18: to his potential. Again, I think sometimes he tries to
41:47
Speaker 18: make highlight plays, especially on defense when it's not really necessary.
41:51
Speaker 18: I'd like to see him settle in. But a player
41:54
Speaker 18: that rarely gets mentioned that I really like is the
41:57
Speaker 18: catcher Tyler Stevenson. I mean, I think he had glimpses
42:01
Speaker 18: in the past couple of years where he would carry
42:03
Speaker 18: the Reds through a three game series with his offense.
42:06
Speaker 18: And he's not a bad defender either, so I like
42:08
Speaker 18: him both.
42:09
Speaker 3: He needs to get something Stevenson is and I agree
42:12
Speaker 3: with you, he's almost kind of the lynchpin key to
42:14
Speaker 3: that because if you have Stevenson of two years ago,
42:16
Speaker 3: suddenly you have a guy that's like a six hitter,
42:18
Speaker 3: five hitter even, and he really lengthens out that lineup.
42:21
Speaker 3: If you've got a guy that can hit twenty home
42:23
Speaker 3: runs a catcher and hitting the two sixties or something
42:25
Speaker 3: like that, the Stevenson that we had last year, you
42:28
Speaker 3: need to you need a little bit more out of it.
42:30
Speaker 3: This is a free agency, so he needs he needs
42:33
Speaker 3: to come out with something.
42:34
Speaker 7: So a lot of times players when it's their contract season,
42:38
Speaker 7: obviously they have a bigger season so I would think
42:41
Speaker 7: that he's quite.
42:41
Speaker 3: Hope he does. Yeah, because that would really You're right,
42:43
Speaker 3: that would really lengthen that lineup a lot if Stevenson
42:45
Speaker 3: was was back to where he was two years ago.
42:47
Speaker 2: I want to ask you, but we'll let you go
42:49
Speaker 2: because I know everybody's get things to do. What except
42:51
Speaker 2: for Jim, Jim got miss Jim got mistaken for John
42:54
Speaker 2: for John Fetterman Senator Senator John Federman in a parking
42:58
Speaker 2: lot at Kroger.
42:59
Speaker 3: There address today or what?
43:01
Speaker 2: He just told me that story. So the lady asked
43:03
Speaker 2: asking him how much he looked, told me how much
43:05
Speaker 2: he looked like Fatterman, And I can see it now.
43:08
Speaker 3: And I didn't.
43:09
Speaker 18: I didn't realize it because I get all my news
43:11
Speaker 18: on the radio, so I have no idea all day.
43:14
Speaker 2: I like that, right, what is you don't need to
43:17
Speaker 2: get tell us the number of wins losses? But what
43:19
Speaker 2: place in the division would I mean, we'd all like
43:21
Speaker 2: to see him in first, But if you had.
43:22
Speaker 7: To pick, well, I mean a little texts text chain
43:28
Speaker 7: with with some other with some other Reds fans here.
43:32
Speaker 7: And so today was the deadline that I had to,
43:34
Speaker 7: you know, choose what how many wins. And I know
43:37
Speaker 7: the national predictors like Fangrafts, and they don't like the
43:41
Speaker 7: Reds this year. I mean they've got him below five
43:43
Speaker 7: hundred last year, right, yeah, less than last year. But
43:46
Speaker 7: I'm going with eighty five wins, which would be you know,
43:49
Speaker 7: like a four win improvement or maybe a three win
43:53
Speaker 7: improvement over last year. And and hope it's low, but
43:58
Speaker 7: I mean, I'm going to go eighty five wins.
44:00
Speaker 2: Okay too.
44:01
Speaker 3: I'm almost never optimistic because I think that it's a
44:03
Speaker 3: curse to be overly optimistic, you know. I think you say, hey,
44:06
Speaker 3: we're gonna win one hundred games, that you're going to
44:07
Speaker 3: win sixty, you know, like I hate to do that. However,
44:10
Speaker 3: I am going to try to be on the positive
44:12
Speaker 3: side of these things this year. I think that the
44:13
Speaker 3: Reds have had some bad luck. They haven't had any
44:16
Speaker 3: of these players gel together and have good seasons, you know,
44:19
Speaker 3: like a few years ago the COVID year when they
44:22
Speaker 3: had Winker and Costadanos they both had were having those
44:25
Speaker 3: monster seasons at the same time. They need something like that,
44:27
Speaker 3: and I think it's going to happen this year, and
44:29
Speaker 3: so I'm want to stay second in the division whatever
44:31
Speaker 3: that is, and they'll be in the playoffs, all right, Jim.
44:34
Speaker 18: I concur with the second place, and all I can
44:36
Speaker 18: say is trust Tito. He's had some time with this
44:39
Speaker 18: roster and I think, I mean, he's a master at it.
44:41
Speaker 18: He's probably going to be a Hall of Fame manager.
44:44
Speaker 18: So I think he'll manage this season correctly using the
44:47
Speaker 18: talent that we believe that they have, and they're going
44:49
Speaker 18: to do well.
44:50
Speaker 2: Jim, Markman, Wally and Weppees, Yeah, and the Western New
44:53
Speaker 2: Sports Triners Association. Let's right. I appreciate you being here.
44:55
Speaker 4: Thank you.
44:56
Speaker 2: Dale Cooper. He can catch him on the hotline this
44:58
Speaker 2: afternoon at three. Jeff Jenkins, He's always here. You always
45:00
Speaker 2: hear him. So Jeff Jenkinson, appreciate all the three of you,
45:03
Speaker 2: and let's go rants. So let's all right, we'll take
45:05
Speaker 2: a break, come back after this on the Voice of
45:07
Speaker 2: Charleston WCCHS.
45:09
Speaker 1: Brought to you by the Eric Jtar Family Businesses. Eric
45:12
Speaker 1: Jtar Family Businesses live to make life better for you
45:16
Speaker 1: and your family.
45:17
Speaker 3: Spring has sprung.
45:18

Speaker 2: I'll say that. Now do I think they should have
49:56
Speaker 2: had a hero as well?
49:57
Speaker 9: Well?
49:57
Speaker 2: I always think the military should have a heroes welcome
49:59
Speaker 2: no matter what. That's not feasible, that's not practical. But
50:04
Speaker 2: I don't think that people like my dad when they landed,

Speaker 2: uh uh in New York should have been spat upon it,
50:11
Speaker 2: called baby killers.
50:13
Speaker 9: I don't.
50:14
Speaker 2: I don't go with that. If you were against the
50:17
Speaker 2: Vietnam this is the way I feel about it. If
50:20
Speaker 2: you're against the Vietnam War or any conflict, you know,
50:24
Speaker 2: just keep your mouth shut. Complain to your political people. Yeah,
50:28

50:30
Speaker 2: the streets if you want to, no issue with that,

50:45
Speaker 2: I just you know, that's that's a little personal to
50:48
Speaker 2: me because my dad should be be personal at all
50:50
Speaker 2: of us.
50:50
Speaker 4: Yeah.
50:51
Speaker 2: I had a you know, father that died of agent
50:53
Speaker 2: orange poisoning. You know that he got in Vietnam serving
50:55
Speaker 2: his country. So yeah, it's a little personal with me.
50:57
Speaker 20: People in the military follow orders. They do what they
51:01
Speaker 20: are ordered to do through the chain of command. Your
51:03
Speaker 20: point is exactly right. If you have a problem with that,
51:06
Speaker 20: talk to your congressional representation, right the president, But don't

51:32
Speaker 20: entern great peace. Go read it. We'll get into it
51:37

51:48
Speaker 20: and they're trying to collect twenty dollars gift cards.
51:49
Speaker 2: For them to keep them going.
51:52
Speaker 20: That's the society we live in today.
51:54
Speaker 3: That's what politics has come to.
51:55
Speaker 20: That we're just taking a group of people that are
51:58
Speaker 20: trying to earn a living working for the government and
52:00
Speaker 20: making them political pawns in the game. Yeah, no arguments here.
52:04
Speaker 20: I mean, it's it's a sad state of affairs. So
52:06
Speaker 20: we'll get into that talk a ron other topics as
52:08
