- 0:10Speaker 1: I'm Peter Weller and you're listening to Movie Meltdown. Your move, creep.
- 0:23Speaker 2: It's showtime.
- 0:24Speaker 3: The following feature has been rated R by the Motion
- 0:27Speaker 3: Picture Association of America. It is intended for mature audiences
- 0:32Speaker 3: and parental discretion is advised.
- 0:33Speaker 4: Our nuclear reactor pumping out one million.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Kilowatts of power.
- 1:05Speaker 5: We're on express elevator to hell.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Going down.
- 1:21Speaker 6: This time.
- 1:22Speaker 1: But, you know, whatever. Whatever.
- 1:25Speaker 7: We're just, you know, they're not asking us what movies
- 1:29Speaker 7: should be anymore.
- 1:30Speaker 1: I don't know that they ever were, really. So, it's
- 1:35Speaker 1: our own self-centered fault for thinking that they should revolve
- 1:38Speaker 1: around us.
- 1:39Speaker 7: Yes, I know.
- 1:40Speaker 1: I know.
- 1:41Speaker 7: It's true. It's true. It seemed like it was going,
- 1:43Speaker 7: but I think the dragon has eaten the tail, and
- 1:48Speaker 7: now it's like, I think it's like, it seems.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Real, like, everybody's real.
- 1:52Speaker 7: Confused about why people would go see a movie.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, that's the thing. Everybody was so busy doing the, oh,
- 2:00Speaker 1: we can't have regular movies anymore because superhero movies. Marvel
- 2:03Speaker 1: ruined it. And then I'm like, okay, well, Marvel shot
- 2:05Speaker 1: itself on the foot now.
- 2:07Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:07Speaker 1: So they're out of the picture. Yeah. Nobody's picked up
- 2:10Speaker 1: the baton and ran with it. Like, they still don't
- 2:13Speaker 1: know what to do with the movies now. No. So
- 2:16Speaker 1: I'm like, well, now who's your scapegoat? Like, who are
- 2:18Speaker 1: you blaming now when you can't make a movie?
- 2:20Speaker 7: You just got to blame us because a number one
- 2:23Speaker 7: movies there, there are weird movies coming out and, and
- 2:28Speaker 7: there are like in, you know, original ideas coming out,
- 2:31Speaker 7: but nobody goes to see them. All right. You know? And, uh,
- 2:33Speaker 7: so there, there are quirky little movies. I went to
- 2:36Speaker 7: go see the quirkiest piece of shit ever got a
- 2:39Speaker 7: Sasquatch sunrise. And I was going like, how is this
- 2:41Speaker 7: in the movie theater? I'm glad there, this isn't a
- 2:43Speaker 7: superhero movie. I don't know what this is, but, uh,
- 2:46Speaker 7: I don't even know if it is a movie, but, uh,
- 2:48Speaker 7: I bought a ticket and came to see it. There
- 2:53Speaker 7: are weird movies. There are some movies, but nobody goes
- 2:56Speaker 7: to see them.
- 2:58Speaker 1: I mean, that's both things anymore. I don't know. Everybody
- 3:01Speaker 1: just does their own thing. So everything kind of half
- 3:05Speaker 1: takes off in sub-underground version, but then nothing ever makes enough. Like,
- 3:11Speaker 1: even if it's a series people are sitting at home watching,
- 3:13Speaker 1: it doesn't get enough of a push so it doesn't
- 3:16Speaker 1: come back for another season. Like, everything just sort of
- 3:19Speaker 1: half works just enough to not be successful.
- 3:22Speaker 7: Right, right. Yeah, yeah. It's just like, and I think,
- 3:26Speaker 7: you know, A, I mean, and for people, I mean,
- 3:32Speaker 7: it's just not a, it's not an affordable habit to
- 3:36Speaker 7: have to go see a movie. It's like, unless you
- 3:39Speaker 7: go to the early morning thing you know uh at
- 3:44Speaker 7: the little movie theater you can pay five bucks to
- 3:46Speaker 7: get in is it's like wow it's like 1991 again
- 3:49Speaker 7: you know um but if you're going out at night
- 3:53Speaker 7: on a friday night and you're not just going by yourself.
- 3:56Speaker 8: Or you're just going like you know if you're going
- 4:00Speaker 8: if you're going if you're if you're paying for more
- 4:02Speaker 8: than one ticket it's like eesh And then it's like,
- 4:05Speaker 8: you know, ah, you know, it's like, oh my gosh, I.
- 4:07Speaker 7: Just spent $ 80. It's just not, it's not affordable to
- 4:13Speaker 7: go to the movies anymore.
- 4:14Speaker 1: You know? Well, we've sort of already rolled into it.
- 4:18Speaker 1: I guess we should actually officially start. Since I feel
- 4:22Speaker 1: like what we're going to talk about, we're already kind
- 4:25Speaker 1: of ankle deep.
- 4:26Speaker 7: Oh my God.
- 4:26Speaker 1: So before we get knee deep. What's up, and welcome
- 4:29Speaker 1: to Movie Meltdown! I am Brian, and joining me already
- 4:34Speaker 1: complaining about stuff this week is... I'm Sam. Hey.
- 4:37Speaker 7: I'm having a nervous breakdown over here.
- 4:43Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. But that is what originally, like, I was
- 4:49Speaker 1: sitting at home being sad, like, every day. And I
- 4:52Speaker 1: was like, here's the problem, I haven't talked to Sam. Hey,
- 4:55Speaker 1: there we go. You know, it's been, it's long enough
- 4:58Speaker 1: times in between our horror movie geekdom that I'm just like,
- 5:01Speaker 1: sometimes I need other conversations. It's been too long. I
- 5:04Speaker 1: need to talk to you. There we go. So I
- 5:06Speaker 1: put this idea together and you were like, hey, we
- 5:09Speaker 1: don't really have a specific idea. How about we just
- 5:11Speaker 1: talk about the fact that all movies are falling apart
- 5:14Speaker 1: thanks to Jack Black. So do you want to address
- 5:18Speaker 1: the new movie that, I don't know if we're calling
- 5:20Speaker 1: this a success, but. I don't know.
- 5:23Speaker 7: No, no, I haven't heard anybody actually review the movie,
- 5:27Speaker 7: you know, if it was good or not. The target
- 5:30Speaker 7: audience for Minecraft are the movie, the movie, the motion picture, right?
- 5:36Speaker 1: Yeah. The motion picture.
- 5:43Speaker 7: My kids have talked about how old timey that sounds.
- 5:47Speaker 1: A picture that has motion? Wow. It's not a talking to,
- 5:52Speaker 1: is it? Ooh, is that talking? Yeah, exactly.
- 5:55Speaker 7: Yeah, I know.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Blow your mind.
- 5:58Speaker 7: Blow your mind. The motion picture. Back when that used
- 6:01Speaker 7: to mean something. So, yeah, so Minecraft... The target audience
- 6:07Speaker 7: would be kids. My youngest is 13. She loves Minecraft.
- 6:14Speaker 7: All my kids grew up playing Minecraft. They love Minecraft.
- 6:17Speaker 7: They saw that Minecraft thing trailer, and they were like,
- 6:22Speaker 7: no thanks. They were like, no thanks. They were like,
- 6:26Speaker 7: that's going to suck. I'm going like, why? Why would
- 6:31Speaker 7: that suck? They just spent like $ 80 gazillion on this.
- 6:35Speaker 1: Movie and got all these people it was also my
- 6:37Speaker 1: thought when i saw the trailer yeah yeah but i'm
- 6:41Speaker 1: an old man i feel like it should be them
- 6:44Speaker 1: that you know would care right yeah i i i
- 6:48Speaker 1: I don't understand Minecraft anyway. I'm like, you guys have
- 6:51Speaker 1: billion-dollar computers sitting in front of you, and you've got
- 6:54Speaker 1: the crappiest graphics ever. It was different when I did it,
- 6:57Speaker 1: because we didn't have any. I was just happy to
- 6:59Speaker 1: have graphics. Right, right. The boxy-looking things were amazing to me.
- 7:04Speaker 1: You guys can have cinematic-quality video games now, and you're
- 7:08Speaker 1: looking at the same damn box as I was in
- 7:09Speaker 1: the 80s. That also kind of pissed me off, if
- 7:13Speaker 1: you don't notice. Well, and they love it.
- 7:15Speaker 7: They love Minecraft. And, Brian, you actually have Lego. So,
- 7:24Speaker 7: you know, it's like a real thing.
- 7:27Speaker 1: I live in a real world boxy world. I can't
- 7:31Speaker 1: even tell you what's going on in this city right now. Fantastic.
- 7:35Speaker 1: It's a lot. It's a lot going on.
- 7:37Speaker 7: So, really, I mean, Brian, you can probably, if you were...
- 7:43Speaker 7: Of a different generation, this would be your Lego, okay?
- 7:47Speaker 7: Because that's what they do. They just sit and they
- 7:49Speaker 7: build stuff all day long. And it gets real elaborate.
- 7:55Speaker 1: I mean, I had that. It was called The Sims.
- 7:58Speaker 1: And it was life-changing. But I feel like the novelty
- 8:04Speaker 1: of that wore off. The next wave of kids that
- 8:06Speaker 1: came along did not fully embrace The Sims.
- 8:09Speaker 7: They did not.
- 8:10Speaker 1: They did not.
- 8:11Speaker 7: Minecraft, though... the experience of Minecraft is really weird because
- 8:16Speaker 7: it is like a total immersion and world building and
- 8:23Speaker 7: also how they sort of consume other things through the
- 8:29Speaker 7: lens of Minecraft. My son is like, should study world
- 8:36Speaker 7: religion in college or become a theologian or something because
- 8:42Speaker 7: he watches Minecraft videos on YouTube where people have recreated
- 8:48Speaker 7: in minute detail famous religious cathedrals like St. Paul's Basilica
- 8:57Speaker 7: and the Vatican. They've completely recreated it down to the candlestick.
- 9:03Speaker 7: And they just go through that and then they just
- 9:06Speaker 7: talk theology for like three hours.
- 9:10Speaker 1: That has also crossed over. I didn't want to fully
- 9:14Speaker 1: get into it, but since you brought it up now,
- 9:16Speaker 1: that has been the latest addition to my city. In
- 9:19Speaker 1: the Lego world, I have introduced the idea of religion.
- 9:22Speaker 7: Okay, awesome.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Now, they won't... This is a weird thing to me.
- 9:26Speaker 1: They won't, in Lego world, like, you don't see, like,
- 9:30Speaker 1: Gothic cathedrals and, you know, big Catholic churches or whatever sets.
- 9:35Speaker 1: But somehow, if it's another country, they're, like, backdoor themselves in... Because, like,
- 9:41Speaker 1: that Monkey Kid series is all about, like, actual stories
- 9:45Speaker 1: that are based in China, and they all go way
- 9:47Speaker 1: back in time, so there's this pagoda thing that is
- 9:51Speaker 1: the most religious-y looking type of thing, that I'm like, ooh,
- 9:54Speaker 1: that's really cool, I want that. And I'm like, well,
- 9:56Speaker 1: if I'm going to introduce that, then there's also, if
- 9:59Speaker 1: you go into it, there's like actual gods from their
- 10:03Speaker 1: ancient culture that are built-in Lego people. And I was like, wait,
- 10:07Speaker 1: why is it okay?
- 10:09Speaker 7: They don't have a.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Jesus on the cross that or something.
- 10:14Speaker 7: Don't worry, the other.
- 10:15Speaker 1: Day I did make a Lego Jesus. He's hanging out
- 10:19Speaker 1: in the pagoda there. I've decided to mix all of
- 10:21Speaker 1: them together. I'm like, we're just going to have one
- 10:23Speaker 1: big religion. I've got an elephant guy up here. I've
- 10:27Speaker 1: got a Jesus down here. I've got a snake lady.
- 10:30Speaker 1: So there's all these heathen religions coming together. And they
- 10:34Speaker 1: are basically just built around one thing. which is making money. Yes,
- 10:41Speaker 1: they should totally put my own little slant on the
- 10:44Speaker 1: religion in this universe. I love it.
- 10:46Speaker 7: I love it.
- 10:47Speaker 1: So that's a tile of gold next to this guy
- 10:50Speaker 1: who is actually the God of wealth in the Chinese culture.
- 10:54Speaker 1: And I've, yeah, I've made that what the entire religion
- 10:57Speaker 1: is built around. That's cool.
- 10:58Speaker 7: You never think about, yeah, all those Lego movies, they're
- 11:01Speaker 7: just all like, humanist heathens, so there is no religion
- 11:05Speaker 7: in Legoland.
- 11:09Speaker 1: Fleece and the rubes, that's what it's all about.
- 11:11Speaker 7: I love it.
- 11:13Speaker 1: So, just crossed over a little there, but that reminded
- 11:16Speaker 1: me that it is weird that even in the digital
- 11:18Speaker 1: world out there, they're doing kind of the same thing
- 11:22Speaker 1: and equally as misguided as my version's probably.
- 11:26Speaker 7: Well, no, it's really weird. I mean, I'm just saying
- 11:28Speaker 7: that they use Minecraft to teach other things or talk
- 11:32Speaker 7: about other things. And so it's real bizarre, but those
- 11:38Speaker 7: Minecraft videos, sometimes they're just playing Minecraft and talking stuff and,
- 11:45Speaker 7: you know, talking their ideas about life or whatever. I mean,
- 11:48Speaker 7: it's like, I don't care about that stuff, but I mean,
- 11:51Speaker 7: People will watch it if it's in a Minecraft video,
- 11:54Speaker 7: and it'll be three, four hours long, and they'll watch it,
- 11:57Speaker 7: and it's just somebody playing Minecraft and bullshitting. But they
- 12:03Speaker 7: made this big Hollywood production, and they had zero interest
- 12:07Speaker 7: in going to go see it.
- 12:08Speaker 1: It costs no budget to sit there and watch some
- 12:11Speaker 1: idiot build their Minecraft town. Right. But yeah, they... paid
- 12:16Speaker 1: freaking Jack Black and Aquaman to show up here, and
- 12:18Speaker 1: you guys are like, this looks stupid, which I also
- 12:21Speaker 1: agree looks stupid.
- 12:22Speaker 7: Yeah, it does. They're going like, I would rather just
- 12:25Speaker 7: stay home and watch somebody play Minecraft than actually go
- 12:28Speaker 7: see this Hollywood behemoth thing pandering to me, right?
- 12:32Speaker 1: And I think that, yeah, that is the entirety of
- 12:36Speaker 1: your point. Like, that's where we are as a culture now. Like,
- 12:39Speaker 1: old people like us still remember the olden days when
- 12:42Speaker 1: we watched stuff in a theater, but kids... don't have that,
- 12:45Speaker 1: don't care, don't want that, really. Like, they're not concerned
- 12:49Speaker 1: with that.
- 12:49Speaker 7: No, no, it's like.
- 12:51Speaker 1: Find something they're into, but it's not built around, oh
- 12:54Speaker 1: my gosh, I gotta run out to the theater and
- 12:55Speaker 1: see the next big thing.
- 12:57Speaker 7: No, zero interest. Zero interest in that. I have to
- 13:00Speaker 7: drag them to the movie theater, and I can't believe that.
- 13:04Speaker 1: That makes kids love things more. Yeah, I... You force them,
- 13:08Speaker 1: it makes them love it so much more.
- 13:10Speaker 7: Oh, so much more, so much more. Yeah, they would
- 13:13Speaker 7: rather not even, like, you know, I mean, they're getting older,
- 13:16Speaker 7: you know, and everything, but you know, not even Disney stuff.
- 13:18Speaker 7: Do they, you know, I mean, it's like, I mean,
- 13:20Speaker 7: I guess they're getting older. I mean, yeah, I guess they're.
- 13:21Speaker 1: All, all your kids are grown almost. Yeah. Yeah. They're all,
- 13:25Speaker 1: they shouldn't want nothing to do with this.
- 13:27Speaker 7: That might not, that might be the thing. It might
- 13:29Speaker 7: not be really about movies. It might be just like
- 13:30Speaker 7: they're teenagers and they're establishing their own identity now, you know,
- 13:34Speaker 7: and everything.
- 13:35Speaker 1: Is your dumb dad.
- 13:36Speaker 3: Shut up.
- 13:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 13:37Speaker 7: Whatever you and your emotion pictures, whatever, you know, but, uh, but,
- 13:43Speaker 7: But what was interesting about Minecraft is because people don't
- 13:47Speaker 7: talk about movies anymore, or, you know, I guess on podcasts,
- 13:51Speaker 7: that's the only place you talk about movies.
- 13:56Speaker 1: How many kids are doing a movie podcast versus how
- 13:59Speaker 1: many dudes in their 50s sitting in their basement talking
- 14:02Speaker 1: about movies? And probably movies from the 80s.
- 14:06Speaker 7: Exactly. I'm looking at a movie, a picture, a poster
- 14:10Speaker 7: right now of Halloween. So, you know, it's like, uh,
- 14:13Speaker 7: you know, and how, you know, so what, how old
- 14:16Speaker 7: is that? You know, almost 50 years, you know?
- 14:19Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 14:23Speaker 7: But, uh, but the interesting thing, so people don't talk
- 14:26Speaker 7: about movies. So the last time I really remember it
- 14:29Speaker 7: actually being in the, uh, uh, zeitgeist was, was, uh,
- 14:36Speaker 7: you know bar barbie heimer and uh you.
- 14:38Speaker 1: Know they actually left the house for those.
- 14:41Speaker 7: Yeah yeah exactly people were leaving and talking and that
- 14:44Speaker 7: was something that everybody wanted to go do and and
- 14:47Speaker 7: so then they were kind of dancing during some of
- 14:49Speaker 7: the barbie scenes or something or they would all get
- 14:51Speaker 7: dressed up you know if you can make it into
- 14:53Speaker 7: like a social thing where you get dressed up and
- 14:57Speaker 7: can put it on instagram more than anything yeah take
- 15:00Speaker 7: selfies that's the most selfies look, I got dressed up
- 15:04Speaker 7: all cute, and here I am in front of the
- 15:06Speaker 7: Barbie poster, and we're part of this cultural movement to
- 15:09Speaker 7: go do something in a public space, you know, so yeah,
- 15:15Speaker 7: they were able to do that, and so then, so
- 15:18Speaker 7: the interesting thing about Minecraft movie, the only thing that was,
- 15:23Speaker 7: because nobody wanted to go see it, but people were
- 15:25Speaker 7: taking their kids to it, and then there was some
- 15:28Speaker 7: kind of meme that I think got started, I asked
- 15:32Speaker 7: my Youngest, did the meme start first or did the
- 15:37Speaker 7: movie start first? And she said, well, sometimes... Okay. So
- 15:43Speaker 7: one of the little characters in Minecraft rides around on
- 15:47Speaker 7: a chicken and people like that in the Minecraft game.
- 15:51Speaker 1: All right. All right.
- 15:52Speaker 7: And so then they make reference to that in the movie.
- 15:55Speaker 7: All right.
- 15:56Speaker 1: And so.
- 15:57Speaker 7: It sort of became a social media thing where when
- 16:02Speaker 7: Jack Black says chicken jockey, everybody goes nuts. So I
- 16:09Speaker 7: was going like, oh, well, that sounds fun. But I
- 16:13Speaker 7: don't know.
- 16:13Speaker 4: It's kind of like a weird thing where parents knew
- 16:17Speaker 4: to take their kids to do this and record it
- 16:20Speaker 4: and encourage it because it would make great content on
- 16:25Speaker 4: their Facebook feed.
- 16:27Speaker 7: Or on their Instagram.
- 16:28Speaker 1: Content creation.
- 16:29Speaker 7: It was about content creation. And the kids know that
- 16:33Speaker 7: this would make great content.
- 16:36Speaker 1: I don't know, Brian.
- 16:38Speaker 7: So the kids would go absolutely berserk. And I don't
- 16:42Speaker 7: know if you've watched any of the videos.
- 16:44Speaker 1: Just the one where they brought an actual chicken to
- 16:47Speaker 1: the theater. Okay, I haven't seen that. Okay, yes.
- 16:49Speaker 7: But they were bringing actual chickens. It wasn't like a
- 16:53Speaker 7: Rocky Horror kind of thing. I mean, I guess it
- 16:55Speaker 7: was kind of like a Rocky Horror thing.
- 16:56Speaker 1: I mean, that was my take on it. I was like,
- 16:58Speaker 1: this movie looks dumb, but I appreciate in a Rocky
- 17:01Speaker 1: Horror sense. As someone who spent a lot of time
- 17:05Speaker 1: sitting in a theater waiting for people to yell things
- 17:07Speaker 1: out and to join in and yell stupid things that
- 17:10Speaker 1: made no sense. I appreciated that level of it. But
- 17:14Speaker 1: it also looked like it was kind of firing a
- 17:16Speaker 1: little differently. Exactly. Exactly. I don't even know how. I
- 17:21Speaker 1: just know it felt a little different.
- 17:23Speaker 7: Yeah, well, I think it's because these kids were eight
- 17:26Speaker 7: and throwing popcorn on people and throwing their drinks against
- 17:29Speaker 7: the screen and ripping the trays out.
- 17:33Speaker 1: Of the chairs.
- 17:35Speaker 7: And it was just basically when Jack Black... Pandemonium. Jack
- 17:41Speaker 7: Black says Chicka Jocka just act like a total ass.
- 17:46Speaker 1: Which, I mean, again, is kind of how the old
- 17:48Speaker 1: school version of Rocky. Sure. Like, they had to... soft-coated
- 17:53Speaker 1: over the years and be like, look, you can't bring
- 17:56Speaker 1: in all this shit that's going to ruin the theater.
- 17:58Speaker 1: You can't tear up the seats. You can't ruin the screen.
- 18:01Speaker 1: So we got a more basic, homogenized version as time
- 18:05Speaker 1: went on, but it still sort of felt like there
- 18:08Speaker 1: was a little bit of rebelliousness to it, more or less.
- 18:11Speaker 1: But yeah, you can't destroy other people's shit.
- 18:13Speaker 7: Like, come on. My thought was just like, the kids
- 18:17Speaker 7: are doing that. I was going like, man, parent your kid.
- 18:20Speaker 1: You know?
- 18:20Speaker 7: It was what I was thinking. But then it was like,
- 18:23Speaker 7: I was more like, holy shit, I'm just getting so
- 18:26Speaker 7: fucking old. It was like, yeah, it's probably not that
- 18:29Speaker 7: much different than Rocky Horror. I think it fires different.
- 18:34Speaker 1: If they're eight, you know, that is more of a parent-your-kid.
- 18:37Speaker 1: Rocky Horror was built around a bunch of dumb teenagers. Teenagers. Teenagers,
- 18:42Speaker 1: they do what they want anyway. There's no more parenting.
- 18:44Speaker 1: You missed that off-ramp. They're already grown enough to do
- 18:47Speaker 1: their own stupid things, and they're going to continue for
- 18:50Speaker 1: the rest of their lives. That's it. By teenager, you've
- 18:53Speaker 1: kind of, you know, it's past that point. Let them
- 18:55Speaker 1: go do whatever dumb thing they want to do. That's it.
- 18:58Speaker 1: That's it.
- 18:58Speaker 7: And it was kind of like, it's at midnight, it's
- 19:00Speaker 7: all kind of packaged, and, you know, the concept... of
- 19:04Speaker 7: Rocky Horror is not the concept of Minecraft.
- 19:07Speaker 1: Yeah, it is an R-rated film that was playing at midnight.
- 19:11Speaker 1: So it's not friendly, really.
- 19:14Speaker 7: It's not a cult film. It's a cult film and
- 19:16Speaker 7: not like a mass marketed, uh, you know, Happy Meal movie.
- 19:21Speaker 7: You know, so there was a sense of rebellion.
- 19:23Speaker 1: Right.
- 19:24Speaker 7: There was a sense of rebellion about going to, uh,
- 19:26Speaker 7: Rocky Horror and being part of like some, you know,
- 19:29Speaker 7: midnight cult thing, you know? And this is like, uh,
- 19:32Speaker 7: This is like, you know, just like, mall fodder bullshit,
- 19:38Speaker 7: and nobody wanted to go see this movie except to
- 19:42Speaker 7: raise hell during that one scene.
- 19:43Speaker 1: Well, I kind of wondered, like, at the end of
- 19:45Speaker 1: the clips that I'm seeing online, did they all just
- 19:48Speaker 1: get up and leave? Cause like nobody wants to watch
- 19:50Speaker 1: the end of that movie. They just came to yell
- 19:52Speaker 1: when he says chicken and then throw a chicken in
- 19:54Speaker 1: the air. And then I'm assuming they're all bored after
- 19:57Speaker 1: that and they all leave. And that's it.
- 20:00Speaker 7: That's it.
- 20:01Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. So I don't know, man.
- 20:02Speaker 7: It was just like, I like that people were talking
- 20:05Speaker 7: about a movie and You know, I mean, so I'm
- 20:07Speaker 7: like happy about that, but I don't know if that's
- 20:13Speaker 7: going to bring people into the movie theater. I mean,
- 20:17Speaker 7: I don't think anybody was interested in the movie. I
- 20:19Speaker 7: think they were just interested in going crazy at the
- 20:23Speaker 7: chicken jacket.
- 20:24Speaker 1: That's the bigger question. Again, the more me looking forward
- 20:29Speaker 1: into the grim future. Is that, are they so like, well,
- 20:34Speaker 1: at least they bought tickets to come do that. So like,
- 20:37Speaker 1: are they going to have to start planning any theatrical
- 20:41Speaker 1: ideas around? Can we gimmick our way into getting people
- 20:45Speaker 1: to show up to the theater?
- 20:47Speaker 7: Oh my God.
- 20:48Speaker 1: I mean, that's kind of where, I mean, if that's
- 20:50Speaker 1: the only reason general public will go spend money to
- 20:55Speaker 1: sit in the theater is to do something stupid for
- 20:57Speaker 1: a viral reason or some extra tie in somehow. Do
- 21:02Speaker 1: you start, I mean, again, every other step of the
- 21:04Speaker 1: way where they made cheesy popcorn movies, they were built
- 21:07Speaker 1: around some other thing, even so much as, like, let's
- 21:10Speaker 1: make one out of a video game that's already popular. Like,
- 21:13Speaker 1: that in and of itself is a cheesy corporate idea. So, like,
- 21:17Speaker 1: are we going to even more hone it down to, okay,
- 21:21Speaker 1: how do we make this one viral moment into a
- 21:24Speaker 1: reason for them to go to the theater next week
- 21:26Speaker 1: and the week after that?
- 21:29Speaker 7: It's so depressing.
- 21:31Speaker 1: I was hoping you had an answer, damn it. It's
- 21:34Speaker 1: so depressing. Yeah, yeah.
- 21:37Speaker 7: I don't know. I know we were supposed to cheer
- 21:39Speaker 7: each other up, but what you just said is so depressing.
- 21:44Speaker 1: Just our conversations kind of do it for me. I know.
- 21:48Speaker 1: I'm overall overlook on life is not going to change,
- 21:52Speaker 1: but I get a little while, a snippet of time
- 21:56Speaker 1: that I'm not totally miserable, so... this is what it's
- 21:59Speaker 1: good for. It raises our spirits for a little while. Yeah, sure.
- 22:03Speaker 7: So, so yeah, you know, it's like, well, like restaurants,
- 22:06Speaker 7: they will have like a little nook in the corner
- 22:09Speaker 7: I've seen where, you know, you're supposed to take your
- 22:11Speaker 7: Insta photos, you know, to post online, you know, it's like,
- 22:14Speaker 7: they'll make it like a little, little, uh, I don't know, diorama.
- 22:18Speaker 7: I don't know what to call it. Uh, it's like
- 22:20Speaker 7: a little thing with some stuff and they put it
- 22:22Speaker 7: there so you can make your, uh, you know, pictures and, Well,
- 22:26Speaker 7: they all.
- 22:26Speaker 1: Make a banner wall, like it's a red carpet event,
- 22:29Speaker 1: and you put the name of the studio and the
- 22:32Speaker 1: movie behind you on a wall, and now they just
- 22:35Speaker 1: put the name of the restaurant in neon on a
- 22:38Speaker 1: bare wall so you can stand in front of it
- 22:40Speaker 1: and advertise them, essentially. Go take your selfie over there
- 22:45Speaker 1: next to the sign of the thing that we are
- 22:47Speaker 1: so that we get hits and promo and we get
- 22:50Speaker 1: some sort of recognition out of this. Right. Why? I
- 22:53Speaker 1: don't know. What are you getting out of advertising for them?
- 22:56Speaker 1: I feel like I should be getting kickbacks for extra
- 22:58Speaker 1: advertising for people.
- 23:00Speaker 7: Yeah, no, it's like, uh, well, it's like, it's like
- 23:03Speaker 7: I'm making the scene is what it is. It's like,
- 23:05Speaker 7: everybody's become like, uh, like, Hey.
- 23:08Speaker 1: That's why I didn't understand it. Yeah.
- 23:11Speaker 7: Like, like, like, like, yes.
- 23:12Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 23:13Speaker 7: From a monetary point of view, it's like, why do
- 23:15Speaker 7: you aspire to be a shill for other people?
- 23:19Speaker 3: You know?
- 23:20Speaker 7: And not do.
- 23:21Speaker 1: Your own thing. I thought about designer clothes over the
- 23:24Speaker 1: years too. I'm like, you're paying a fortune for this
- 23:27Speaker 1: name and it's stenciled across the front of you half
- 23:31Speaker 1: the time or written giant on your ass. And I'm
- 23:33Speaker 1: just like, but you're advertising for them every time you
- 23:37Speaker 1: put it on.
- 23:38Speaker 7: Get out of that deal.
- 23:41Speaker 1: You are walking billboards for this company and you also
- 23:45Speaker 1: paid them a fortune to get this item. It feels
- 23:48Speaker 1: like this is all out of whack.
- 23:50Speaker 7: Are you in a pyramid scheme? Is that what it is?
- 23:54Speaker 1: Maybe that's also why I'm very unfashionable. It's different.
- 23:59Speaker 7: Our generation going to Goodwill and everything and thrifting, that
- 24:04Speaker 7: was the fashion.
- 24:05Speaker 1: So it's okay. I was a dork and I was
- 24:08Speaker 1: wearing movie tees. But that's an artistic creation and I
- 24:13Speaker 1: am a fan of it. So I don't mind advertising
- 24:16Speaker 1: that I'm a dork who likes this thing on my chest.
- 24:19Speaker 1: versus just the name of a designer or a label
- 24:22Speaker 1: or a company right branded on you i was just
- 24:24Speaker 1: like that's different like that's just a company you're just
- 24:28Speaker 1: advertising for a company and like look how special i
- 24:31Speaker 1: am that i spent a small fortune on this thing
- 24:33Speaker 1: i don't know it still sits wrong with me i
- 24:37Speaker 1: appreciate when things are designed nicely i'm not bad mouthing
- 24:40Speaker 1: the entirety of that. You know, I think there is
- 24:43Speaker 1: an art to creating fashionable clothing, but that is not
- 24:47Speaker 1: what's going on most of the time. I'm sorry. No, no, no.
- 24:50Speaker 7: It's like, Hey, look, it's a status thing. It's like,
- 24:52Speaker 7: I'm part of this club, but which, which is kind
- 24:54Speaker 7: of what movie t-shirts are. It is a shorthand for
- 25:00Speaker 7: starting conversations with like, it is like throwing a flag
- 25:03Speaker 7: out there.
- 25:04Speaker 1: It has to go on.
- 25:04Speaker 7: Like, I don't know how to start conversations with people. Well,
- 25:08Speaker 7: I'm going to wear this Mad Max t-shirt. And then
- 25:10Speaker 7: somebody would go like, Mad Max, okay, that's how you
- 25:12Speaker 7: meet people.
- 25:13Speaker 1: And now I don't even do that. I don't go anywhere,
- 25:16Speaker 1: so I don't bother putting on the thousand t-shirts I
- 25:19Speaker 1: have in a closet over there somewhere. I just don't
- 25:22Speaker 1: care anymore. I don't care enough to... do anything that
- 25:29Speaker 1: involves effort at this point.
- 25:30Speaker 9: It's bad really.
- 25:35Speaker 1: No i'm not starting those conversations don't worry.
- 25:38Speaker 7: Yeah that's that's like yeah that's true that's terrible it's
- 25:41Speaker 7: it's that's a very true statement no i don't really
- 25:44Speaker 7: care enough to do something that's going to involve.
- 25:48Speaker 1: Effort welcome to my life That's, like, everything down to, like,
- 25:54Speaker 1: making food at this point. Like, people talk about what they're... Oh,
- 25:58Speaker 1: I made this soup last night. I'm like, no, no, no,
- 26:00Speaker 1: you lost me. You turned on the fire. This is
- 26:02Speaker 1: too much effort. It ain't happening. Quit trying to sell
- 26:06Speaker 1: me on your can of soup. It ain't happening. So, yeah,
- 26:09Speaker 1: the least amount of effort on every aspect of life.
- 26:13Speaker 7: Sounds exhausting.
- 26:15Speaker 1: Oh, God.
- 26:19Speaker 7: Making me so tired with your... of your culinary expertise
- 26:23Speaker 7: of warming up the soup in the microwave.
- 26:25Speaker 1: You and your turning on the burner.
- 26:28Speaker 7: Screw this. Oh, whoa, you used the burner. That's it,
- 26:32Speaker 7: that's it. Oh, you used the burner. Well, okay, Mr. Fancy,
- 26:35Speaker 7: you didn't just put it in a bowl in the microwave.
- 26:38Speaker 1: Microwave? Oh, there's buttons. No.
- 26:42Speaker 7: I'm just going to drink it cold from the can.
- 26:47Speaker 1: And I'm almost there. One step away. Well, I mean, actually,
- 26:52Speaker 1: now they make the can that is insulated in foam
- 26:55Speaker 1: and you just put it in the microwave. You actually
- 26:58Speaker 1: can just do that.
- 26:59Speaker 7: Just go like, I don't even want to put it
- 27:01Speaker 7: in the bowl.
- 27:02Speaker 1: Fine, I put it in there and now I'll drink
- 27:04Speaker 1: it straight out of this slightly lukewarm can. Yeah. Call
- 27:09Speaker 1: it dinner.
- 27:10Speaker 7: And it's like, you look at the ingredients. It was
- 27:13Speaker 7: tomato soup. It's just sadness. It's just contents. corn syrup
- 27:20Speaker 7: and red coloring. It's like, oh, red. Isn't there tomato
- 27:25Speaker 7: in here somewhere? The hue of red in a Campbell's
- 27:31Speaker 7: can of soup that you pour out, you go like,
- 27:34Speaker 7: what even is that shade of neon weird Crayola red
- 27:39Speaker 7: that they made the soup? I mean, oh, my God, Brian,
- 27:44Speaker 7: we're complaining about movies and talking about soup?
- 27:47Speaker 1: Are you surprised? Have you ever listened to one of
- 27:49Speaker 1: our conversations? No, no one has. The point is, movies
- 27:55Speaker 1: and stuff. Okay, speaking of food items in a not
- 28:01Speaker 1: a movie. Sort of a series. This definitely ties to us.
- 28:06Speaker 1: I watched this the other day and I went, oh,
- 28:07Speaker 1: now I have to tell you about this when we talk.
- 28:10Speaker 1: Because I'm assuming you're a busy guy. You got life
- 28:13Speaker 1: and shit. So you probably haven't watched the new Star
- 28:18Speaker 1: Wars show. Because they don't make movies anymore. Once again,
- 28:21Speaker 1: because movies have failed. No one goes to the theater.
- 28:25Speaker 1: So now they're banking on streaming series. So have you
- 28:28Speaker 1: watched any of the new Andor's?
- 28:31Speaker 7: Okay, no, I have not watched them. I don't have Disney,
- 28:34Speaker 7: so you're going to have to... I just.
- 28:36Speaker 1: Kind of called it anyway, because I was like, eh,
- 28:38Speaker 1: you don't have patience for that bullshit. That's why. And
- 28:43Speaker 1: I'm not going to go into it. This has a
- 28:45Speaker 1: tie-in to a previous movie, and I think it also
- 28:49Speaker 1: is an interesting little thing here of like almost a contest, maybe. Okay. So,
- 28:57Speaker 1: in this new series, they've introduced a new planet. that
- 29:01Speaker 1: we haven't seen before. As you know, every planet in
- 29:04Speaker 1: Star Wars land is all one thing. If it's snowy,
- 29:08Speaker 1: the whole damn planet's snowy. If it's desert, the whole
- 29:10Speaker 1: damn planet's desert. We got to a new one, and
- 29:14Speaker 1: they're zooming in over on a shot of it, and
- 29:17Speaker 1: I was like, oh my god, is this wheat? Are
- 29:19Speaker 1: we looking at a field of wheat on this planet? No! No!
- 29:24Speaker 1: I swear to God, one of the three main storylines
- 29:28Speaker 1: is them on this wheat planet, and they're doing farming
- 29:32Speaker 1: and working on farm equipment, and there's a whole lot
- 29:35Speaker 1: of shots of fields of wheat.
- 29:37Speaker 7: Just saying.
- 29:38Speaker 1: What's going on? on?
- 29:41Speaker 7: I don't understand. He was before his time. He saw
- 29:47Speaker 7: it coming.
- 29:49Speaker 1: But see, I went, because to me, I was like,
- 29:51Speaker 1: normally I'd say, oh, you're trying to rip off this
- 29:53Speaker 1: other dumb movie. I was like, I feel like because
- 29:56Speaker 1: they are, in fact, the big dogs, They're like, no, no, no, no, no.
- 30:00Speaker 1: You think you get to do wheat? No. It's not
- 30:03Speaker 1: a wheat movie until we make a wheat movie. It's not.
- 30:07Speaker 1: Your little knockoff Star Wars doesn't even count. If we're
- 30:10Speaker 1: going to put them on a wheat planet, Star Wars
- 30:12Speaker 1: is going to do it. And they were just like,
- 30:14Speaker 1: I don't care if you already did it. Watch us
- 30:16Speaker 1: do it for real because yours doesn't even count, loser.
- 30:20Speaker 1: I feel like that was the move.
- 30:22Speaker 7: Oh, my God. Oh, my God. I feel regular just
- 30:28Speaker 7: thinking about it. I mean, it's like thinking about all
- 30:32Speaker 7: that weed just makes me want to take a shit
- 30:34Speaker 7: so bad. It's like the wheat, the wheat. Now the
- 30:40Speaker 7: official is now pilfering. It's almost like they were like, okay,
- 30:46Speaker 7: we got to keep making Star Wars. We got to
- 30:48Speaker 7: keep making Star Wars. Somebody think what planet is going
- 30:50Speaker 7: to be? What planet is it going to be? You know,
- 30:52Speaker 7: it was like a Play-Doh planet.
- 30:54Speaker 1: No, no, no.
- 30:55Speaker 7: We can't do a Play-Doh planet.
- 30:57Speaker 1: You know, they did that in Doctor Strange 2. Yeah, right.
- 31:00Speaker 7: Guys, I don't want to say this out loud, but
- 31:04Speaker 7: did you watch Rebel Moon?
- 31:06Speaker 1: It was like, no, no, boo. How dare it?
- 31:07Speaker 7: Get out of here.
- 31:08Speaker 1: Wait, wait, wait, wait. They did a one word, guys.
- 31:12Speaker 1: One word, man. Wheat. Wait, if you like those shots
- 31:18Speaker 1: of wheat, that would be cool looking. Nobody's ever thought
- 31:21Speaker 1: of that before. Well, didn't you see that? No, no, no, no,
- 31:25Speaker 1: I didn't watch it. But nobody's ever thought of that before.
- 31:28Speaker 1: So we'll do that. Yes, if you haven't been following
- 31:32Speaker 1: along to our multi-episode discussion of Rebel Moon Parts 1
- 31:37Speaker 1: and 2, The Wheat Giver.
- 31:39Speaker 7: The Wheat Giver?
- 31:41Speaker 1: We went pretty far in on the wheat.
- 31:43Speaker 7: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 31:44Speaker 1: And overwhelmingness and ridiculousness. And now it's just funny that
- 31:49Speaker 1: in an official Star Wars project, there is just row
- 31:54Speaker 1: after row of wheat. Wow.
- 31:57Speaker 6: Wow.
- 31:57Speaker 1: I just saw it, and I wanted to call you immediately.
- 32:00Speaker 1: Thank you. But wheat! Thank you for letting me know.
- 32:03Speaker 7: What are you talking about? If I needed another reason
- 32:08Speaker 7: to avoid it.
- 32:10Speaker 1: I mean, it's actually not bad. But, again, now we've
- 32:14Speaker 1: moved into full-on, like... They were going for, like, adult
- 32:17Speaker 1: Star Wars. Now it's just, like, kind of depressing adult
- 32:21Speaker 1: Star Wars. Oh. Like, it is a downer. Like... People
- 32:25Speaker 1: got upset when we took out Han shot first. You know,
- 32:28Speaker 1: it's like, back in the old days, Han was a badass,
- 32:31Speaker 1: and Greedo was gonna get him, so he shot that guy. Dude,
- 32:34Speaker 1: Andor will just shoot people in the face. Because you
- 32:39Speaker 1: need to go. Like, you might be his friend, but
- 32:42Speaker 1: if in this circumstance, it will benefit him and what
- 32:46Speaker 1: he's currently doing, that you need to die, he will
- 32:49Speaker 1: put a bolt in your face. Like, he doesn't mess around.
- 32:54Speaker 1: And the series is continuing this whole process. And, like,
- 32:58Speaker 1: he's pretty cutthroat when need be. And the show has
- 33:02Speaker 1: an overall tone of, number one, it's one of the
- 33:05Speaker 1: first times we've seen, like, a desk job in Star
- 33:08Speaker 1: Wars universe.
- 33:09Speaker 7: Oh, okay, cool.
- 33:09Speaker 1: So you see, like, soul-crushing monotony of a desk job,
- 33:14Speaker 1: for one thing. Then on top of that, now we've seen, like,
- 33:17Speaker 1: sexual assault in the Star Wars universe on this last episode. Like,
- 33:22Speaker 1: it's getting dark now. All right. I'm appreciating it for
- 33:27Speaker 1: what it is, but it is not your grandpa on
- 33:30Speaker 1: Star Wars. Okay.
- 33:32Speaker 7: Well, I mean, it sounds like exactly what I've been
- 33:34Speaker 7: wanting out of Star Wars, actually.
- 33:36Speaker 1: I think that's what people have been saying. Yeah.
- 33:39Speaker 7: Fleshing it out.
- 33:40Speaker 1: They can do the extreme, because I also really like
- 33:43Speaker 1: Skeleton Crew. Oh, okay. And Skeleton Crew is back to
- 33:46Speaker 1: old school. It is kids... Again, it's not even pretending
- 33:50Speaker 1: it's not Goonies in Space. It's literally a group of
- 33:54Speaker 1: crazy kids and they are launched into space and now
- 33:57Speaker 1: they're getting in adventures. But it has a tone that's
- 34:00Speaker 1: like still pretty fun like it's it's treasure island there's
- 34:03Speaker 1: like pirates in space i mean it's like it's the
- 34:06Speaker 1: most fun kid friendly thing for being still kind of
- 34:10Speaker 1: you know dark at moments but for the most part
- 34:13Speaker 1: it is just fun and i'm like i really enjoyed
- 34:15Speaker 1: that so like they're kind of making up for some
- 34:18Speaker 1: off you know off projects along the way there but
- 34:21Speaker 1: yeah these last two are like you're getting fun kid
- 34:24Speaker 1: stuff and then you're getting really adult.
- 34:27Speaker 7: Oriented stuff yeah all right all right I mean, that
- 34:31Speaker 7: sounds cool, man. That sounds cool. I mean, I was
- 34:33Speaker 7: hesitant for Andor because I didn't like the character, how
- 34:36Speaker 7: he was treated, and I didn't like the character from...
- 34:40Speaker 7: From Rogue One.
- 34:41Speaker 1: We didn't have any characters. That was my issue. I
- 34:45Speaker 1: actually like Rogue One overall, but I feel like both
- 34:49Speaker 1: of our leads are the most blank slate ever. You
- 34:53Speaker 1: don't know anything about those two. The other two sidekick
- 34:55Speaker 1: guys are awesome. I like these guys. We spend almost
- 34:58Speaker 1: no time with them, but they're cool. And then our
- 35:01Speaker 1: two main leads that we spend the entire movie with,
- 35:04Speaker 1: I feel like I know nothing about. So they had
- 35:06Speaker 1: to rectify that with, like, 17 hours of footage with
- 35:10Speaker 1: this dude. So we now at least know him. Like,
- 35:14Speaker 1: he is a known character now. That other chick just
- 35:17Speaker 1: got blowed up. Who knows about that? Yeah, she got
- 35:19Speaker 1: blown up. Who knows? Who knows? Unless they do a
- 35:22Speaker 1: back-in-time version for her, too. But from him, at least
- 35:26Speaker 1: now we know who he is and why he is
- 35:28Speaker 1: and what he's been doing. So you don't feel that way.
- 35:31Speaker 1: So maybe you would appreciate Rogue One more once you
- 35:34Speaker 1: watch all this. But that's the whole thing.
- 35:36Speaker 7: It's like, if you go back and you watch the
- 35:40Speaker 7: 122 episodes of Clone Wars, I hear it kind of
- 35:43Speaker 7: redeems the prequels, you know, but man, it's just like,
- 35:47Speaker 7: you know, time's The clock is ticking, Brian. I mean,
- 35:50Speaker 7: how much time do we got?
- 35:53Speaker 1: I mean, not that much in reality, but we also
- 35:57Speaker 1: waste a good amount of time. That's true. That's true.
- 36:00Speaker 7: That's true.
- 36:00Speaker 1: Let's have a little fun. You pick and choose your battles, man.
- 36:03Speaker 7: That's it.
- 36:03Speaker 1: That's it.
- 36:05Speaker 7: Speaking of prequels, I guess they had the 20th anniversary
- 36:08Speaker 7: re-release of Sith.
- 36:09Speaker 1: You just reminded me of trying to get people back
- 36:12Speaker 1: in the theaters. Yeah, we're taking a movie that was
- 36:15Speaker 1: only kind of half finished. like that the time of
- 36:18Speaker 1: any of them. I mean, once we got over the
- 36:20Speaker 1: shock of Phantom Menace, even then nobody loved that one.
- 36:23Speaker 1: And then two and three were just kind of meh
- 36:26Speaker 1: for most people. So it's weird that now how much
- 36:29Speaker 1: they're trying to celebrate them because it's been a couple
- 36:33Speaker 1: of generations since then.
- 36:35Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 36:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 36:36Speaker 7: And I guess it's the better one, but it's, it
- 36:38Speaker 7: is like everybody was just kind of like, uh, walking
- 36:41Speaker 7: around in a, Wonder if I got in a daze
- 36:44Speaker 7: after Phantom Menace, just trying to make sense of their lives,
- 36:46Speaker 7: you know? And I think Edward Wright said, like, thank
- 36:50Speaker 7: God Phantom Menace was so bad, you know, it allowed
- 36:52Speaker 7: me to move on with my life.
- 36:55Speaker 1: I could start making my own movies at that point. Yeah, yeah.
- 36:58Speaker 1: Even I could do better than this.
- 37:00Speaker 7: It kind of snapped me out of it, you know? But, no,
- 37:04Speaker 7: I mean, it would be, you know, they were going
- 37:06Speaker 7: to do, like, 3D re-releases of the prequels at one point,
- 37:09Speaker 7: right before the Disney buyout.
- 37:11Speaker 1: So.
- 37:12Speaker 7: I would have.
- 37:13Speaker 1: Maybe gone to go see it. I don't care about 3D.
- 37:17Speaker 7: Had they done a 3D conversion? I don't know. I
- 37:21Speaker 7: don't know.
- 37:21Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 37:22Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 37:23Speaker 1: I don't know. Again, I like the old-timey gimmickiness of 3D,
- 37:27Speaker 1: but ever since they just made it as an add-on
- 37:30Speaker 1: to sell you a more expensive ticket, I don't care.
- 37:33Speaker 7: Yeah, you're right. You're right.
- 37:35Speaker 1: I saw Hugo. That was impressive. That's about the last
- 37:38Speaker 1: time I've cared.
- 37:39Speaker 7: Yeah, it's really like, what, it's, yeah, if I didn't
- 37:42Speaker 7: go see Avatar 2, I mean, I was like, you know,
- 37:44Speaker 7: I was like, I think I'm done with it. But, yeah,
- 37:48Speaker 7: I mean, if we could just do a Emperor Palpatine
- 37:52Speaker 7: supercut of Revenge of the Sith, I think I'd be
- 37:54Speaker 7: all right. You know, probably go see that. But, you know,
- 37:57Speaker 7: that's only five minutes.
- 37:59Speaker 1: I don't know. I think he's got a good amount
- 38:01Speaker 1: of time on that one.
- 38:02Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah.
- 38:03Speaker 1: That's the thing. There's an actor that cashed in on
- 38:05Speaker 1: a role.
- 38:06Speaker 3: Oh, dude.
- 38:07Speaker 1: Like, you're not even in the first two movies unless
- 38:09Speaker 1: you're counting the monkey eyes nonsense. Yeah, right. And then, like,
- 38:12Speaker 1: the third one you roll up and you've got a
- 38:14Speaker 1: decent amount of time, but still, like, he then got
- 38:16Speaker 1: an entire trilogy based around him.
- 38:19Speaker 7: Right, right.
- 38:20Speaker 1: He's just so damn good. That guy cashed in. Yeah, yeah.
- 38:24Speaker 7: I saw him in.
- 38:25Speaker 1: He knows how to swing for the benches. That's it.
- 38:27Speaker 7: That's it. I saw him in Dragon Slayer the other day.
- 38:30Speaker 7: I didn't realize he was in that. He plays like
- 38:31Speaker 7: a priest or something. I was like, oh, that's the Emperor.
- 38:35Speaker 1: Crazy. Did he fire lightning at a dragon at any point?
- 38:39Speaker 1: With his hand?
- 38:40Speaker 7: Oh, my God. That would have been the best movie.
- 38:45Speaker 1: That would make it a little more awesome.
- 38:48Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah.
- 38:50Speaker 1: That was the thing I knew I had to pass
- 38:52Speaker 1: along as far as recent things I've seen. So I
- 38:57Speaker 1: don't know. Do we just want to hit other things
- 38:59Speaker 1: we've watched somewhat recently?
- 39:01Speaker 7: I've got very boring.
- 39:05Speaker 7: If you're about to see what people who want to
- 39:09Speaker 7: do a podcast and talk about Campbell's Soup, what they've
- 39:14Speaker 7: been watching, I will.
- 39:16Speaker 1: I mean, that is our core audience. That is.
- 39:18Speaker 7: All right.
- 39:19Speaker 1: Okay.
- 39:20Speaker 7: Alright, why don't I name one and then you'll name
- 39:22Speaker 7: one or something.
- 39:23Speaker 1: Or you can go back and forth.
- 39:25Speaker 7: However it goes. The first thing I've been watching that
- 39:29Speaker 7: I've really been enjoying is on Apple TV.
- 39:36Speaker 1: I don't acknowledge that as a thing, but sure.
- 39:39Speaker 7: Okay, it's Apple TV. The first season of Severance was
- 39:43Speaker 7: really good. I got the... I re-upped my.
- 39:48Speaker 7: Uh, uh, subscription to season two, season two lost me
- 39:53Speaker 7: within like two episodes. And I was like going, ah,
- 39:55Speaker 7: screw this. But there's other stuff on Apple. And, uh,
- 40:00Speaker 7: one's good is, uh, the new Seth Rogen show, the
- 40:04Speaker 7: studio about, uh, he is a guy who gets to run.
- 40:10Speaker 7: He's like an exec who gets the job to run
- 40:12Speaker 7: a studio. All right. Uh, like it was like a
- 40:15Speaker 7: Columbia pictures or like a universal or something like that.
- 40:18Speaker 7: And he's basically saying, hey, I am going to stop
- 40:23Speaker 7: making these shitty movies, and I'm going to bring back
- 40:25Speaker 7: the golden age of cinema, and we're going to make
- 40:28Speaker 7: Chinatowns and Godfathers and that kind of stuff. All right?
- 40:32Speaker 1: Is this set in the past, or it is current day?
- 40:35Speaker 7: Current day. So he's trying to fight the current climate
- 40:41Speaker 7: of filmmaking and what movies are, and he's trying to
- 40:46Speaker 7: bring back quality, right? And it is hilarious, dude. It
- 40:52Speaker 7: is hilarious. It's about a guy who loves movies, but
- 40:56Speaker 7: it's kind of like being in hell because the way
- 41:00Speaker 7: the world works will not allow him to make the
- 41:02Speaker 7: kind of movies he loves, right?
- 41:06Speaker 1: It would be difficult these days.
- 41:08Speaker 7: Yeah, so I don't want to... I don't want to
- 41:11Speaker 7: give it away. It's all very well written. I'm kind
- 41:14Speaker 7: of always been a take him or leave him kind
- 41:16Speaker 7: of self-roguing guy, but this has really made me a
- 41:18Speaker 7: fan because.
- 41:19Speaker 1: It's very hit and miss for me, yeah.
- 41:21Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah. I just always associate him with Judd Outtow movies,
- 41:25Speaker 7: you know, but... And I liked, what, the interview that
- 41:28Speaker 7: he did with Ravis?
- 41:30Speaker 1: I avoided that as well for several reasons.
- 41:33Speaker 3: It was.
- 41:34Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 41:35Speaker 7: I thought it was funny. I thought it was funny.
- 41:37Speaker 1: But....
- 41:38Speaker 7: But this is really actually really well written and, and
- 41:42Speaker 7: really well shot. They try to do everything in one take,
- 41:45Speaker 7: you know? And so it was just like zooping around everywhere,
- 41:48Speaker 7: very limited take, uh, cuts. And, uh, the, the, so
- 41:54Speaker 7: just to give away the premise of the first movie
- 41:57Speaker 7: of the first episode, he gets this job and he
- 42:00Speaker 7: goes like, finally I can, I've got my own studio.
- 42:03Speaker 7: And like at the hiring event, you know, uh, The
- 42:09Speaker 7: guy who owns the studio says, I have just closed
- 42:16Speaker 7: the deal, and we've got the rights to Kool-Aid.
- 42:22Speaker 1: So he has to, like, he's got to.
- 42:25Speaker 7: Make a Kool-Aid movie. And it's going to be this big,
- 42:29Speaker 7: massive movie. And then he hires somebody to try to
- 42:33Speaker 7: make it like the thinking man's Kool-Aid movie. I'm just
- 42:38Speaker 7: not going to get into it. It's really fucking good show.
- 42:43Speaker 7: And I'm pretty hooked on it. And it comes out
- 42:45Speaker 7: like on Wednesdays. So I go like, man, Wednesday.
- 42:48Speaker 1: Hey, cool.
- 42:48Speaker 7: A new episode comes out. So it's like the old
- 42:50Speaker 7: days where I'm like, hey, I'm actually looking forward to
- 42:53Speaker 7: a show coming out. I've had that recently. Yeah, okay, okay, cool.
- 43:00Speaker 1: I won't go into that one, because I've kind of
- 43:01Speaker 1: brought it up before, and I will just... I wanted
- 43:04Speaker 1: to devote a whole podcast to the show, but it's
- 43:07Speaker 1: too much of that, so I'll pick something else. I'll
- 43:10Speaker 1: pick an actual movie, but I won't say a timely movie.
- 43:15Speaker 1: That was kind of my favorite part of this. I
- 43:17Speaker 1: finally was like, it's one of those movies that I've
- 43:19Speaker 1: been like, eh, I'll get to it. Like, when it
- 43:22Speaker 1: came out, I went, eh, doesn't really look that amazing.
- 43:26Speaker 1: I'll probably watch it someday. And, like, we're close to
- 43:29Speaker 1: two decades later, and I'm finally like, all right, fine,
- 43:32Speaker 1: let's just watch.
- 43:34Speaker 7: All right.
- 43:35Speaker 1: But tied into my sacrilege comments earlier, I watched The
- 43:39Speaker 1: Da Vinci Code. Oh, that was a cool thing. I
- 43:44Speaker 1: haven't seen The Da Vinci Code. Moments of it. Exactly,
- 43:49Speaker 1: that was fun. Moments. I knew of it, and I
- 43:52Speaker 1: was like, at the time, I remember seeing the trailer,
- 43:55Speaker 1: and I'm like, that's not a good haircut for you,
- 43:57Speaker 1: Tom Hanks. And that's mostly what I, that's pretty much
- 44:00Speaker 1: all I gave it. It was like, it's just, it's
- 44:03Speaker 1: not as bad as I watched it this time. I
- 44:05Speaker 1: think I remembered it worse. I thought it was more mulledy.
- 44:07Speaker 1: It's just sort of shaggy and just, he's so normally his,
- 44:11Speaker 1: you know, tight haircut thing. And then he came to
- 44:13Speaker 1: this movie and I'm like, who is this guy? What
- 44:17Speaker 1: is this that's going on Tom Hanks? And so I
- 44:20Speaker 1: avoided it for, almost 20 years. And so I finally
- 44:24Speaker 1: was just like, I don't remember what it was. Something
- 44:27Speaker 1: triggered it lately. I was like, I guess I should
- 44:29Speaker 1: watch those. I don't know. Right. So I finally watched that.
- 44:33Speaker 1: And I mean, it's very slow in that first hour.
- 44:42Speaker 1: I'm just like, all right, I get like, I was
- 44:45Speaker 1: kind of not on board with my decision for a while. Yeah.
- 44:48Speaker 1: And then you get to the center of it and
- 44:49Speaker 1: it gets to the theory that The big money, I
- 44:53Speaker 1: don't know if you know what gets divulged in this plot.
- 44:57Speaker 7: I guess it's come up. You can spoil it and everything.
- 45:02Speaker 7: I think everybody's seen it.
- 45:03Speaker 1: It gives you a fun fact about Jesus. Let's put
- 45:06Speaker 1: it that way. Okay. So I got to that and went, oh,
- 45:10Speaker 1: hold on. This is kind of it. Again, I felt
- 45:12Speaker 1: the sacrilege creeping in and I was excited. I was like, oh,
- 45:16Speaker 1: someone going to piss off Bible people. All right. Now
- 45:19Speaker 1: I'm on board.
- 45:19Speaker 6: Subversive.
- 45:20Speaker 7: Subversive.
- 45:21Speaker 1: So, yeah, then all of a sudden it was interesting,
- 45:24Speaker 1: and I was like, okay, this is fun. I can
- 45:26Speaker 1: get on with this interesting story now. And then after that,
- 45:29Speaker 1: it actually gets very action-oriented. There's a little more, you know,
- 45:33Speaker 1: crazy adventure stuff going on the whole rest of the movie. So,
- 45:37Speaker 1: you know, you jump about 45 minutes or so in,
- 45:39Speaker 1: and it's a pretty entertaining movie. Right. It's slow getting going,
- 45:44Speaker 1: where he's figuring out what to do, but... Right. It
- 45:47Speaker 1: is interesting how, I mean, it is not a minor sacrilege.
- 45:52Speaker 1: It is a big, oh, wow, that is going to
- 45:54Speaker 1: piss people off. You can't say those kind of things. So, yeah,
- 45:59Speaker 1: it's pretty interesting how... Because that was a super mainstream
- 46:03Speaker 1: book and a super mainstream movie with Tom Hanks and
- 46:07Speaker 1: Ron Howard. And I was like, this is a big
- 46:09Speaker 1: mainstream thing that also probably would piss off a lot
- 46:14Speaker 1: of people. So I just assume most, you know, church-going
- 46:18Speaker 1: people were just like, we'll not acknowledge that movie exists
- 46:21Speaker 1: and we'll shrug it off. Yeah.
- 46:24Speaker 7: Well, it was so popular, though. We can just say it.
- 46:27Speaker 7: He was married, right?
- 46:28Speaker 1: That's the thing. I mean, yeah. Spoilers for this 20-year-old movie.
- 46:31Speaker 1: He was married.
- 46:33Speaker 7: He was married.
- 46:33Speaker 1: But he was married and had a child.
- 46:37Speaker 7: And had a child.
- 46:38Speaker 1: Right, right, right.
- 46:39Speaker 7: And who grew up to be Haley Joel Osment.
- 46:44Speaker 1: Oh, he's having legal trouble. We don't talk about him.
- 46:46Speaker 7: Oh, we don't talk about him.
- 46:48Speaker 1: Emily is the favorite child now. Emily Osment is the
- 46:51Speaker 1: cool one. Oh, okay, cool.
- 46:53Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 46:54Speaker 1: And she's adorable, so it's fine.
- 46:56Speaker 7: Well, I think it was like... I'm just riffing here.
- 47:00Speaker 7: I'm going like, why was that so popular? You know,
- 47:04Speaker 7: and I think people, even Bible people... were probably going
- 47:09Speaker 7: to see that movie to see what it was all about.
- 47:11Speaker 7: I mean, and they put like America's like, like Tom Hanks.
- 47:18Speaker 1: Surprised with that casting for that.
- 47:20Speaker 3: Really?
- 47:20Speaker 1: Like from his standpoint, like I could see him not,
- 47:23Speaker 1: I mean, he kind of does what he wants even
- 47:25Speaker 1: back then. But I was like, it seems like that
- 47:28Speaker 1: would be for a different actor that could totally kill
- 47:31Speaker 1: your career. So maybe he just knew I'm Tom Hanks,
- 47:34Speaker 1: you know, I'll just roll on and do something else,
- 47:36Speaker 1: which he did regardless of how it went over. He
- 47:39Speaker 1: just went on movie after that. So he can, he
- 47:42Speaker 1: can do that. He's Tom Hanks, but it is big. Yeah.
- 47:46Speaker 1: To be as big a project as it was, it
- 47:48Speaker 1: is interesting that they just kind of, don't sugarcoat it.
- 47:52Speaker 1: Like again, the whole middle of the movie is him
- 47:54Speaker 1: just explaining beat for beat what is going on and
- 47:58Speaker 1: here's why and here's how we know and this is this.
- 48:01Speaker 1: And so, yeah, I liked when it kind of got
- 48:03Speaker 1: to that crazy reveal and like really spelled it out
- 48:06Speaker 1: in a way that I figured was going to piss
- 48:08Speaker 1: people off.
- 48:10Speaker 7: I mean, if you're going to piss people off, you
- 48:11Speaker 7: get Tom Hanks and you have it directed by Opie.
- 48:14Speaker 7: I mean, you know, that's going to, but that was
- 48:17Speaker 7: building so much. I wonder, I think it's something people want.
- 48:21Speaker 7: I mean, that was what Last Temptation of Christ was about, right?
- 48:24Speaker 7: Where he thought about, man, what if I had, you know,
- 48:27Speaker 7: settled down and had some kids.
- 48:30Speaker 1: That would definitely piss people off.
- 48:31Speaker 7: Like, there were.
- 48:32Speaker 1: Definitely Bible people that got, like, were out protesting that movie. Yeah,
- 48:37Speaker 1: that movie blew up. Where they didn't do that with
- 48:38Speaker 1: Da Vinci Code. I don't remember hearing any backlash, really. Like,
- 48:42Speaker 1: even people who seemed like, because I remember someone I
- 48:46Speaker 1: know who were, I remember them talking about that movie,
- 48:49Speaker 1: and now I'm thinking back, and I'm like, they were
- 48:51Speaker 1: kind of church people. It's just weird that it, like,
- 48:55Speaker 1: somehow found a weird crossover that I guess, because it's
- 48:58Speaker 1: based on this book, and it's just, like, fantasy novel-ish. Yeah. That, like,
- 49:03Speaker 1: it does, but it's not real, like the Bible. Like,
- 49:05Speaker 1: this is just a book. Right.
- 49:07Speaker 7: You don't have Martin Scorsese saying... It.
- 49:12Speaker 1: Doesn't have any weird flashbacks to him getting it on
- 49:15Speaker 1: with Mary Magdalene or anything. We just look at a
- 49:18Speaker 1: painting and we throw out a theory and it's all good.
- 49:22Speaker 7: Like, right.
- 49:22Speaker 1: So maybe that was part of it too. It was
- 49:24Speaker 1: also kind of homogenized into the most arm's length version
- 49:28Speaker 1: of this concept. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 49:30Speaker 7: I mean, I think, but I'm, I'm throwing this out here.
- 49:34Speaker 7: I think, you know, people, uh, are just becoming more
- 49:39Speaker 7: secular in time you know but also like this was
- 49:43Speaker 7: kind of coming in at the heels of like all
- 49:46Speaker 7: the priest scandals at the catholic church and so maybe
- 49:51Speaker 7: this was like uh church people weren't so upset because
- 49:54Speaker 7: they were going like well look jesus he was just
- 49:57Speaker 7: kind of a normal.
- 49:57Speaker 1: Guy at least he had a wife he had a
- 50:00Speaker 1: wife there were no kids involved like it wasn't There
- 50:03Speaker 1: weren't any scandals about him and any kids. He had
- 50:06Speaker 1: a wife. They were married. It was all on the
- 50:08Speaker 1: up and up.
- 50:08Speaker 7: That's right. Put a ring on the finger.
- 50:12Speaker 1: The lesser of two evils.
- 50:15Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 50:15Speaker 1: Okay, exactly.
- 50:17Speaker 7: Jesus being married, we can handle.
- 50:18Speaker 1: We can't handle the priests and the pedophiles. I'm only
- 50:22Speaker 1: kind of a creepy person. Jesus is cool because he
- 50:25Speaker 1: got married. Right. Yeah. Maybe it just put a whole
- 50:28Speaker 1: new spin on it all. Yeah. Yeah.
- 50:30Speaker 7: It was like, Hey, maybe, maybe we should let Bruce
- 50:32Speaker 7: get married.
- 50:34Speaker 1: Hey, I've said that for years. Yeah. It's like just
- 50:38Speaker 1: for many reasons other than it just makes them crazy.
- 50:41Speaker 1: Like one of the few that I knew and you know, youth, uh,
- 50:48Speaker 1: it was one of the stories that sort of, I
- 50:49Speaker 1: found inspiring, which again, I feel like goes against, it
- 50:52Speaker 1: shows me not being a churchy person, uh, One of
- 50:55Speaker 1: the guys who ran the whole church that I was
- 50:58Speaker 1: exposed to as a youth, eventually, right after I was
- 51:03Speaker 1: around there, left the priesthood and got married to a woman.
- 51:08Speaker 1: So I was like, at the time, I was like,
- 51:12Speaker 1: you know... That's kind of cool. Like you realized you
- 51:16Speaker 1: didn't need to be there. And instead of doing something wrong,
- 51:19Speaker 1: you just left it all behind and went to do
- 51:22Speaker 1: the light, you know, put together life you want to have.
- 51:24Speaker 1: I was like, that's right. I'm kind of proud of that.
- 51:26Speaker 1: Good for you, sir. So again, I feel like everyone
- 51:29Speaker 1: else cursed his name, but I was like, no, that's
- 51:33Speaker 1: making the right call. And if you guys didn't box
- 51:35Speaker 1: people in and.
- 51:36Speaker 7: No, it's true. It's true. And, and look, I mean,
- 51:39Speaker 7: priests have like, like, groupies.
- 51:42Speaker 10: I mean, not like actual Rose does, but I worked
- 51:47Speaker 10: at a coffee shop right by a church and it
- 51:50Speaker 10: was the church I used to go to, but people
- 51:52Speaker 10: would leave mass and then they would come to get
- 51:56Speaker 10: some coffee and sometimes their eyes were like infatuated and
- 52:03Speaker 10: they would talk about the priest like he was, you know,
- 52:06Speaker 10: like he.
- 52:07Speaker 7: Was Tom Selleck.
- 52:09Speaker 1: Laughter I like your choice of references. Who? Sexy retired
- 52:17Speaker 1: old man Tom Selleck. Actually, I just had this. As someone,
- 52:23Speaker 1: we were having a normal conversation. He referenced Magnum P.I.
- 52:28Speaker 1: And I'm like, all right, yeah, crazy mustache. And then
- 52:32Speaker 1: he referenced the car and the house and the dogs.
- 52:36Speaker 1: And I went, oh, you're talking about that other one. Like,
- 52:39Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure there were no dogs in the first one.
- 52:41Speaker 1: They have dogs in the reboot. I remember I did
- 52:45Speaker 1: watch the reboot more than I would be okay with admitting, probably.
- 52:50Speaker 1: It was fine. It wasn't like a big deal, but like,
- 52:53Speaker 1: There's nothing else on on that night. So many a
- 52:55Speaker 1: time I saw an episode of the reboot of Magnum P.I.
- 52:58Speaker 1: And yeah, I realized this guy is considerably younger and
- 53:01Speaker 1: like that's his Magnum.
- 53:03Speaker 7: That's his.
- 53:04Speaker 1: Even that show is off. Even that show is off
- 53:07Speaker 1: the air now. Even that show is old. But like
- 53:10Speaker 1: that was his entry point into Magnum P.I. So I
- 53:14Speaker 1: was trying to make a Tom Selleck reference and it didn't,
- 53:17Speaker 1: you know, it didn't. I was like, oh, that other guy.
- 53:21Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 53:21Speaker 1: Okay. No mustache on him. Okay, never mind. Moving on.
- 53:25Speaker 7: Oh, my God.
- 53:26Speaker 1: Yes. Everyone still uses Magnum PI references.
- 53:30Speaker 7: Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, as the years go by, my references
- 53:43Speaker 7: just become more and more dated.
- 53:46Speaker 1: More and more obscure to every living human.
- 53:51Speaker 7: Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Yeah, Division Code. Well,
- 53:54Speaker 7: and then they made a sequel for it, and it
- 53:57Speaker 7: was pretty cool. Well, you would love to tie it back.
- 54:00Speaker 7: There's a whole episode of the studio about Ron Howard
- 54:06Speaker 7: not being as nice a guy.
- 54:10Speaker 1: Was it narrated by Ron Howard?
- 54:12Speaker 7: Well, no, but he's in the episode, and it's really good.
- 54:16Speaker 7: It's a really good episode.
- 54:18Speaker 1: He does seem to have a good sense of humor.
- 54:20Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's really a cool episode. You go like, oh, yeah,
- 54:25Speaker 7: Ron Howard was an actor for most of his life.
- 54:28Speaker 1: A good portion of his life. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 54:31Speaker 7: He's still got it. He's still got the chops, so
- 54:33Speaker 7: it's pretty good.
- 54:36Speaker 1: Yeah, what's weird is there's also a third one. Did
- 54:39Speaker 1: you even realize they made a third one? Yeah, there's
- 54:42Speaker 1: a third movie in that series.
- 54:44Speaker 7: With Tom Hanks?
- 54:45Speaker 1: The book series has like five, you know, it's a
- 54:48Speaker 1: whole big series of books, but they made three of them.
- 54:52Speaker 1: It was years later and it does have Tom Hanks
- 54:55Speaker 1: and it was directed by Ron Howard. What are the
- 54:59Speaker 1: odds of that? It is a trilogy. Everything's a trilogy.
- 55:02Speaker 7: Part two was Moses wasn't Jewish.
- 55:05Speaker 1: The third one is Inferno. But Inferno didn't come out
- 55:13Speaker 1: until 2016.
- 55:15Speaker 7: Oh my gosh, Inferno.
- 55:16Speaker 1: That is way later than the other two.
- 55:18Speaker 7: Totally forgot. I had heard that. Yeah. Okay.
- 55:21Speaker 1: Yeah, I.
- 55:23Speaker 7: Those movies are not on my radar.
- 55:25Speaker 1: Yeah, that's the thing. Now I'm like, I guess I
- 55:27Speaker 1: have to round them out and watch the other two.
- 55:30Speaker 1: I didn't immediately jump to Angels and Demons. I was like, ah,
- 55:34Speaker 1: once again, I'll get to it. I'll get to it.
- 55:37Speaker 1: Might be another 20 years or so, but I'll get
- 55:39Speaker 1: to it.
- 55:40Speaker 7: Oh my gosh.
- 55:41Speaker 1: But yeah, I was not all fired up to watch
- 55:42Speaker 1: the next one right away. I was like, yeah, maybe later.
- 55:46Speaker 1: I did my time on Da Vinci Code. I'm good.
- 55:50Speaker 7: Well, you know, you find out in Dracula 2000 that Judas,
- 55:55Speaker 7: who betrayed Jesus, ended up being Dracula.
- 55:59Speaker 1: I did see that originally. What's funny is I have
- 56:03Speaker 1: bought a copy of it since then because I want
- 56:06Speaker 1: to go back and rewatch it. Because it is, I
- 56:09Speaker 1: remember it being not the greatest movie, but it was
- 56:12Speaker 1: an interesting concept. And then I picked up the physical
- 56:15Speaker 1: copy I saw and went, look at this cast for
- 56:18Speaker 1: God's sake. It had an amazing cast. They probably all
- 56:22Speaker 1: have about five minutes of screen time, but there was
- 56:25Speaker 1: a lot of people of the time in that movie. Yeah.
- 56:29Speaker 7: Jerry Ryan? As a vampire? I think Jerry Ryan as
- 56:32Speaker 7: a vampire woman was like, I gotta see that.
- 56:35Speaker 1: That's how you guys suckered in. Yeah, that's it.
- 56:38Speaker 7: But then you got Christopher Plummer as Van Helsing. I mean,
- 56:42Speaker 7: that's excellent!
- 56:43Speaker 1: Awesome! I'm telling you, this is Top quality stuff, man.
- 56:47Speaker 1: They don't let Johnny Lee Miller in just anything.
- 56:50Speaker 7: No, no, no, no. He's very discerning.
- 56:53Speaker 1: I mean, vitamin C, for God's sakes. There's no more
- 56:57Speaker 1: a superstar of the moment right now than vitamin C.
- 57:02Speaker 7: Those little flashes. I mean, yeah, they had that time
- 57:04Speaker 7: period they were coming out with 2000 everything. You know,
- 57:07Speaker 7: Godzilla 2000 and Dracula. It was a great time for movies.
- 57:11Speaker 1: And I find... again freaking gerard butler like that guy
- 57:17Speaker 1: i don't know what to do with his career it's
- 57:19Speaker 1: just yeah.
- 57:21Speaker 7: Yeah the new fishing buddy joe of movies you know
- 57:25Speaker 7: he just uh you know i gotta save my family
- 57:28Speaker 7: from this disaster or that disaster well.
- 57:30Speaker 1: I know he just shows up and stands in front
- 57:32Speaker 1: of a green screen is all i know as my
- 57:35Speaker 1: recent viewing of gods of egypt told me oh my
- 57:38Speaker 1: gosh I watched it for an entirely different reason that
- 57:41Speaker 1: I will not go into because it's more sad than anything.
- 57:44Speaker 1: But as I watched it, I was like, I mean,
- 57:48Speaker 1: it's not as bad as I went in. Like, I'm
- 57:50Speaker 1: so like, I got so dumb at that point of
- 57:52Speaker 1: like every CG mythologically old timey sword and sandal in
- 57:57Speaker 1: front of a green screen movie. Like everything post 300
- 58:01Speaker 1: just felt like it was the same. Yeah. Like we'll
- 58:03Speaker 1: knock out a clash of the Titans. We'll do another
- 58:06Speaker 1: clash of the Titans after that. The Immortals. Everything just
- 58:10Speaker 1: felt and looked like that big CG green screen thing.
- 58:13Speaker 7: That's it.
- 58:14Speaker 1: And this is definitely that.
- 58:15Speaker 7: Don't get me wrong.
- 58:16Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 58:17Speaker 7: I saw that. I thought it was like... I had
- 58:22Speaker 7: much lower expectations. I was going like, ah, that didn't like...
- 58:25Speaker 7: I'm not mad that I watched it.
- 58:27Speaker 1: I liked many aspects about it. It was better than
- 58:29Speaker 1: I thought. But the thing I had no idea, I'm
- 58:31Speaker 1: watching it already, and the credit comes up at the beginning,
- 58:34Speaker 1: it's directed by Alex Preuss. That's it. What the hell? Well,
- 58:38Speaker 1: that's why I gave it a chance. Yeah, that's why
- 58:40Speaker 1: I gave it a chance.
- 58:41Speaker 7: I was like, Alex might be able to do something
- 58:44Speaker 7: with this, you know, and he made it not suck.
- 58:47Speaker 1: It's got an actual story. I was impressed with that.
- 58:50Speaker 1: It's still so much CG, it will make your brain bleed.
- 58:54Speaker 1: But that aside, it does have a story. It's got
- 58:58Speaker 1: some good performances. I really like the acting more than
- 59:01Speaker 1: I expected. You don't always get great acting in front
- 59:04Speaker 1: of a green screen. So it was totally watchable. So
- 59:10Speaker 1: that was another weird one off that I just, the
- 59:12Speaker 1: Gerard Butler reminded me. I just saw that. Oh, right, right, right.
- 59:17Speaker 1: He is definitely one of those two dudes that's fighting
- 59:19Speaker 1: each other. Yeah, yeah. You can tell them apart because
- 59:22Speaker 1: one's got an eye patch.
- 59:24Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah.
- 59:26Speaker 1: Otherwise, they're just manly dudes in front of a green screen.
- 59:29Speaker 7: Fighting each other.
- 59:30Speaker 1: But that's how you know one's different from the other.
- 59:33Speaker 1: One's got an eye patch.
- 59:35Speaker 7: Jared Butler was like, you know, his deep Irish accent,
- 59:39Speaker 7: just like, Ah, the pyramids must rise!
- 59:44Speaker 1: They're like, whoa, whoa, whoa, this is not a pirate movie.
- 59:46Speaker 1: Settle down. I know you got an eye patch on, dude,
- 59:49Speaker 1: but you got to do a different accent.
- 59:52Speaker 7: Oh my gosh. They got to do a, they need
- 59:55Speaker 7: to do a Lego pyramid with all the new stuff
- 59:59Speaker 7: they found underneath it. You know, have you been watching
- 1:00:02Speaker 7: any of that with like a, they're saying like, oh yeah,
- 1:00:05Speaker 7: it's the lost city of Atlantis under there. They had
- 1:00:07Speaker 7: electricity and crystals that shot lasers. I mean, I don't
- 1:00:10Speaker 7: know what they're talking about, but, uh, I know it's
- 1:00:12Speaker 7: like Joe Rogan's happiest day that they found more stuff
- 1:00:15Speaker 7: under the pyramid.
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: The only thing I saw that was really interesting and
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: I could totally get behind was they did a cross
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: section of the pyramids and the underneath area. And what
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: we learned was it was actually a big Toblerone bar.
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: And that's what's poking up through. But underneath, just a
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: big Toblerone.
- 1:00:37Speaker 7: What does it feel like?
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: Are you okay? Are you okay?
- 1:00:42Speaker 7: I'm good.
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: I'm good. Are you going to recover from that fact?
- 1:00:45Speaker 7: That was excellent.
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: That was.
- 1:00:48Speaker 7: The truth. The truth is out.
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: It's the truth. It's finally out there, man. Toblerone. Oh, yeah. Okay. Oh. Okay.
- 1:00:59Speaker 7: People are so excited. All right.
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: Let's see. Do you have another thing?
- 1:01:07Speaker 7: Yes.
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:01:08Speaker 7: I watched the first season of.
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: Barry.
- 1:01:12Speaker 7: On HBO.
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: This is about the guy from the Brady Bunch, right?
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: Or it's all about Barry Gibb. Which is it?
- 1:01:24Speaker 7: This is about... Okay, so it's that guy. Will... Not...
- 1:01:28Speaker 7: Is it Will Arnett?
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: That's a guy.
- 1:01:32Speaker 7: But I don't think it's Will Arnett. It's the guy
- 1:01:34Speaker 7: that is like Will Arnett, but I can't remember his name.
- 1:01:38Speaker 7: Thank God there's IMDb. I'm watching it. It's called Barry.
- 1:01:42Speaker 7: Will Forte?
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: Okay, he's a totally different guy. Will Forte?
- 1:01:49Speaker 7: No, no, it's not Will Forte.
- 1:01:51Speaker 11: Okay.
- 1:01:53Speaker 7: Okay, who is this guy? And it's not the guy
- 1:01:56Speaker 7: who does the voice of Batman on the Lego movies.
- 1:01:59Speaker 7: Oh my gosh, all these guys look the same.
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: That's a Will. He looks just like those two.
- 1:02:03Speaker 7: Barry.
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: It is Bill Hader. Okay. All right. He is a
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: totally different guy.
- 1:02:09Speaker 7: Totally different guy. Bill Hader, not Will Forte or Will Arnett.
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: I mean, at least Will Arnett was of the same
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: class of SNL. So that sort of makes sense. Oh, geez. Man,
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: not so much, but you know.
- 1:02:23Speaker 7: Okay. So Barry. All right. Barry is about a guy
- 1:02:31Speaker 7: named Barry played by Bill Forte. Bill Hader. Bill Hader.
- 1:02:36Speaker 7: Bill Hader Arnett. A guy named Barry. He's like this
- 1:02:39Speaker 7: Midwest guy who went to Afghanistan and has post-traumatic trauma.
- 1:02:47Speaker 7: An old family friend hooks him up and he becomes
- 1:02:54Speaker 7: a hitman. We start the show and he's a hitman.
- 1:02:57Speaker 7: He's just taking out little low-level criminals and splitting the
- 1:03:03Speaker 7: money with the guy who He's a great cast. Steven
- 1:03:10Speaker 7: Root is his mentor who's sending him out on jobs.
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: That's already sold me, Steven Root. I'm a boy.
- 1:03:16Speaker 7: Fantastic cast. Fantastic cast, all right? So Bill Hader's a hitman.
- 1:03:24Speaker 7: Steven Root is his boss, and he sends him on
- 1:03:28Speaker 7: a job to go kill somebody for these Chechnyans or
- 1:03:33Speaker 7: something in L.A., So he lands in L.A. He's about
- 1:03:37Speaker 7: to go kill this guy. But this guy is an
- 1:03:40Speaker 7: aspiring actor and he's going to an acting class led
- 1:03:44Speaker 7: by Henry Winkler. All right.
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:03:48Speaker 7: So you got Henry Winkler acting like a pretentious acting
- 1:03:51Speaker 7: instructor in L.A. And Barry, the hitman, catches the acting
- 1:03:59Speaker 7: bug and he doesn't want to be a hitman anymore.
- 1:04:02Speaker 7: Now he wants to be an actor.
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:04:04Speaker 7: But he's enthralled in this criminal underworld of very interesting characters.
- 1:04:10Speaker 7: The Chechnyans are great. And so they're kind of like,
- 1:04:15Speaker 7: so it's like a criminal movie, but he's trying to
- 1:04:18Speaker 7: get out of being a hitman. So you become a
- 1:04:22Speaker 7: working actor. All right. So you've got the cast of
- 1:04:26Speaker 7: other people. So you've got the group of. aspiring actors
- 1:04:31Speaker 7: in the class and they're all great and they're all hilarious. And,
- 1:04:35Speaker 7: you know, you get to see them, you know, talk
- 1:04:37Speaker 7: about trying to be an actor in LA. And then
- 1:04:39Speaker 7: you've also got this side of the thing where it's
- 1:04:42Speaker 7: like the criminal underbelly where he keeps getting pulled into jobs. And, uh,
- 1:04:47Speaker 7: you know, it kind of plays on those tropes. So
- 1:04:49Speaker 7: it's a, it's this cool, like mashup. And it's, it's
- 1:04:53Speaker 7: really well written and very well performed. And it's just
- 1:04:56Speaker 7: really funny, you know? And, but there's also like these
- 1:04:59Speaker 7: like good dramatic moments where he has to bury is
- 1:05:03Speaker 7: a good guy. You know, he's naive. He's from the
- 1:05:07Speaker 7: Midwest and he's not, uh, used to kind of the
- 1:05:11Speaker 7: superficiality of the way you're treated in Hollywood, where everybody's
- 1:05:16Speaker 7: kissing your ass, but also being mean to you at
- 1:05:18Speaker 7: the same time, he's having trouble navigating that. Um, But
- 1:05:25Speaker 7: it's also got these really dramatic parts where he does
- 1:05:28Speaker 7: get has have to get pulled back into the criminal
- 1:05:30Speaker 7: underworld and make a hit that he doesn't want to do.
- 1:05:34Speaker 7: And it's just kind of like funny stuff. Like he's
- 1:05:36Speaker 7: on a hit, but, you know, he's got an audition
- 1:05:39Speaker 7: or he's got a he's got a acting. He's got
- 1:05:41Speaker 7: to meet with a scene partner to do a scene
- 1:05:44Speaker 7: at the class. So he's got to be back at class.
- 1:05:46Speaker 7: He's got to kill this person. But nobody wants, you know,
- 1:05:48Speaker 7: he's got to wait for the person to say, like, OK,
- 1:05:50Speaker 7: kill him now, you know. That kind of thing. Anyway,
- 1:05:52Speaker 7: it's really good. I got through the first season. Excellent.
- 1:05:56Speaker 7: And so, you know, I look at it. And so,
- 1:05:58Speaker 7: of course, I come to these things very late. So
- 1:06:00Speaker 7: there's three more seasons for me to get through. So
- 1:06:02Speaker 7: it's good.
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: That's good.
- 1:06:03Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:06:04Speaker 7: Yeah, it's good.
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: Most things don't get three seasons extra anymore. Right, right, right. Again,
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: people's attention is bent. Yeah, absolutely. Unless it delivers bankroll money.
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: They're just like, man, never mind. We're not going to
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: make another season. I'm like, then... It's so frustrating now that, again,
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: we're moving away from theaters. We're getting to series is
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: almost the staple now of like, that's what people watch
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: is series television. But it's like nobody is on board
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: with that idea from the production end of it. I'm like,
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: if you're going to create this idea... just roll with
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: it and knock out, like figure out how many, you know,
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: seasons it needs to be and green light that from
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: the get go. So we know what we're getting ourselves
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: into versus we've got this four years of story, but
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: we got cut off in the second one. So like,
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: it's just like, if this is going to be our thing,
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: figure out how to do it. You know, it's like, yeah,
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: this is what everybody's going to watch, learn how to
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: produce them so that it's not constantly just whoops, drop
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: the ball on that one. Like, Yeah. They pulled funding
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: out on the next one. Like, it's so dumb. Yeah.
- 1:07:08Speaker 7: No, I got really into kind of like the studio.
- 1:07:11Speaker 7: There was a show on HBO called The Franchise. And
- 1:07:14Speaker 7: it was about trying to make this big superhero movie,
- 1:07:17Speaker 7: you know, and it was behind the scenes and like
- 1:07:19Speaker 7: all the shenanigans. It has the guy from it's an
- 1:07:24Speaker 7: Indian actor. He's in this movie called Yesterday about people
- 1:07:27Speaker 7: waking up.
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: I've seen that. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:07:30Speaker 7: So that actor.
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:07:32Speaker 7: He's a really good actor and he's good in this.
- 1:07:35Speaker 7: And his movie and his show had some really funny
- 1:07:39Speaker 7: stuff in it. And then it built up to his
- 1:07:43Speaker 7: great cliffhanger and then they didn't renew it. So I'm
- 1:07:45Speaker 7: going like, God.
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: That's what I'm saying. Like, just make up your mind.
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: Are we making this a series or are we not
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: making it a series? Yeah, yeah. It's like one-off seasons
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: or halfway into an arc and then we pull the plug.
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: I'm like, just... Pick one. What are we doing? Make
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: an hour and a half movies or make 19 hour series,
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: but like decide beforehand the story you're going to tell
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: and the funding that's going to be necessary. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: No kidding.
- 1:08:14Speaker 7: And I'm sure they would have known by the time
- 1:08:15Speaker 7: they shot that last episode, if they were going to
- 1:08:17Speaker 7: get renewed or not. I mean, or like, you know,
- 1:08:20Speaker 7: so you could just tweak the ending where there was
- 1:08:22Speaker 7: a resolution and, There was going to be a resolution,
- 1:08:26Speaker 7: and then they threw this cliffhanger at the last second.
- 1:08:28Speaker 7: They're going like, oh, yeah, cool, season two, and then
- 1:08:30Speaker 7: they don't renew it.
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: They're going like, well, shit.
- 1:08:33Speaker 7: You know? Yeah. What do you got?
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: I had one that was silly enough I thought you
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: would appreciate this. All right. Again, it is one I
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: found a physical copy of and picked up and went, oh,
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: this looks ridiculous. All right. So it is entitled Eyeborgs. E-Y-E-borgs.
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: Not like Eye Robot. This is Eyeborgs like an eyeball.
- 1:09:01Speaker 7: That's a great title.
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: Yeah, I thought so too. And I was like, this
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: looks dumb enough. I'm going to have to watch it.
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: And then I watched it and I was like, I mean,
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: I was expecting worse. Like I set the bar really
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: low for Eyeborgs. And it at least had an actual plot.
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: The acting was better than your standard sci-fi movie. It
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: wasn't your sci-fi nonsense. It was pretty normal, straight-to-video acting.
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: But yeah, it's a sort of alternate future where we
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: have some sort of issue and they start putting out
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: these iBorgs, which are basically just robots that record everything.
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: And walk around everywhere. There's little ones, and then there's
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: giant ones that also, like, keep the peace. So there's
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: little ones that are just spying on you everywhere that
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: walk around and have a camera built into their head.
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: And then there's these big, like, Ed ones from Robocop, basically,
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: that just come in and, like, attack people when need be.
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: And it's some sort of federal investigation, and there's a cover-up,
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: and the president's families involved, and somewhere along the way,
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: don't worry, Danny Trejo shows up.
- 1:10:16Speaker 7: Danny Trejo shows up. Is Tara Reid in it?
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: No. Again, I said it wasn't sci-fi. If it was sci-fi,
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: she would have been a doctor and it would have
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: had Tara Reid. But no, not. They blew all their
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: money on the Danny Trejo. Not really a huge role,
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: by the way. If you're going in expecting a Danny
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: Trejo vehicle, you're in trouble because It's a little bit
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: more than a cameo.
- 1:10:42Speaker 7: You actually kind of sold me on iBorgs. I kind
- 1:10:45Speaker 7: of like the concept. Now, is it an asylum movie?
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: I mean, it's just a standard, relatively low-budget sci-fi type
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: of thing. But it's still like, I mean, most of
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: the other stuff is the same. That's why it doesn't
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: cost so, like, it's not dystopian future world. Like, it's
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: mostly just in a normal city, but there's also these
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: CG robots walking around behind them. And the main thing
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: that dates it, because that's the thing I'm watching it going,
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: and I had to, like, midway through go, wait, when
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: did this come out? Because it feels like it's got
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: a very government-watching-all-of-your-moves kind of thing that feels almost like
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: response of recent activities. So I was like, but when
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: they pull out their phones, that's the telltale now. When
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: somebody pulls out a flip phone, you're like, what year
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: did this come out? So it's like 2009. Right before.
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: If they would have waited a year or two, they
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: would have had things that didn't make the whole thing
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: look dated. But now everything looks dated because they're all
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: on freaking flip phones the whole time.
- 1:11:50Speaker 7: That's hilarious.
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: Wow. But it's a movie.
- 1:11:56Speaker 7: Okay, okay.
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: Set your bar pretty low and you might be okay. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:12:01Speaker 7: I mean, you basically set it. I had, like, a
- 1:12:05Speaker 7: buried bar for that, all right?
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: Yeah, so did I, and I bought it.
- 1:12:10Speaker 7: You got it, like, right above grass level, so that's
- 1:12:14Speaker 7: not too bad. That's not too bad.
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: It is sort of watchable.
- 1:12:19Speaker 7: Alright, my next one here is, we've done that, we've
- 1:12:23Speaker 7: done that. You talked about iBorgs. I'm just going to
- 1:12:28Speaker 7: jump ahead past some stuff here. iBorg, Cyborgs, I'm going
- 1:12:34Speaker 7: to jump to one I watched on Amazon Prime and
- 1:12:41Speaker 7: it is Robodoc, which is a like six hour documentary
- 1:12:48Speaker 7: on the creation of RoboCop.
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: All right. You would not. Now I'm on board. You
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: would not. I'm assuming we're talking the reboot version, right?
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: Oh my God. People love that movie so much. You
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: need six hours about it. We all collectively forgot that
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: was a thing, by the way.
- 1:13:07Speaker 7: Right, right, right. Well, we all know that, you know,
- 1:13:10Speaker 7: the reboot of Robocop vastly improved on a concept that
- 1:13:15Speaker 7: was barely scratched upon in the original.
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: Yeah, it really got it right.
- 1:13:21Speaker 7: Yep, yep. That first one was just a practice run,
- 1:13:24Speaker 7: you know.
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: We work the kinks out. Now we can make the masterpiece.
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: That's right.
- 1:13:29Speaker 7: That's right. In that mentality, it's like, you know, using
- 1:13:36Speaker 7: the original as a first draft and to get right
- 1:13:38Speaker 7: what they got wrong with the first one. Why don't
- 1:13:40Speaker 7: they all do that? But it's always the opposite. They
- 1:13:43Speaker 7: always just take everything that's good of the first one
- 1:13:45Speaker 7: and they ruin it.
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: That total recall was great. What are you talking about?
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: The running man is going to be awesome.
- 1:13:56Speaker 7: I found out Robbo Team.
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: That is coming, by the way.
- 1:14:01Speaker 7: Robbo Doc. What is coming?
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure they're redoing Running Man.
- 1:14:06Speaker 7: Oh, Jesus.
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: Okay. But what's sad is I saw it and went, wait,
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: didn't they already do that? My brain had already convinced
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: me that that was also remade badly in the 2010s
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: at some point. But I don't think it was, actually.
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: I just assumed that it was. I made it up
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: with my own CG brain and went, oh yeah, it
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: looked really bad, didn't it? Okay, cool. Yeah.
- 1:14:30Speaker 7: Well, if I can be that prick real quick, if
- 1:14:34Speaker 7: they did the book, it would be really cool.
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: That's one of those I would actually be okay, because again,
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: I don't think The Running Man is great as a movie.
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: It's a cool concept that is kind of okay as
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: a movie. So to me, you should take that awesome
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: concept and really do it without cheesy Schwarzenegger one-liners. No offense,
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: I know people love their cheesy Schwarzenegger one-liners, but... I'm like,
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: to me, the original concept seemed way more interesting when
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: it was Christopher Reeve. Because that would have been a
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: cool sci-fi movie. He was the original plan for that movie.
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: And then instead it got turned into a Schwarzenegger movie
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: and it became silly. So had we just done a
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: cool sci-fi movie starring Christopher Reeve, I would have been
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: on board with that. So to me, if you do
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: that now, I'm not going to badmouth it. Like, if
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: you make a good movie, I'm on board.
- 1:15:27Speaker 7: Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: I mean.
- 1:15:28Speaker 7: Everything's, all the sacred cows have already been slaughtered.
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: Might as well do running, man.
- 1:15:35Speaker 7: I mean, you know, what the hell.
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: I mean, it can't be more sacrilege than RoboCop. Yeah, seriously. Seriously.
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: Speaking of which, RoboCop. RoboCop. All right.
- 1:15:47Speaker 7: So, related to RoboCop and the RoboDoc, I found out
- 1:15:52Speaker 7: that when Rob Bottin stopped making movies, he became a
- 1:15:57Speaker 7: real estate agent.
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: You're going to buy a house from him.
- 1:16:02Speaker 7: And you still had the big giant, you know, Wolfman
- 1:16:05Speaker 7: Jack here.
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: You know? So, I mean, that's what sells people on houses.
- 1:16:09Speaker 7: That's it. That's it. Yeah. Let Rob set you up
- 1:16:13Speaker 7: with your, your, your next thing, you know, or something.
- 1:16:16Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: Rob knows the neighborhood.
- 1:16:20Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 1:16:21Speaker 7: So anyway, the robo dock is excellent. It is like,
- 1:16:26Speaker 7: you know, six hours long, No stone left unturned. You
- 1:16:32Speaker 7: get this amazing view into where it came from, which
- 1:16:39Speaker 7: was basically, it was a junior executive at the studio
- 1:16:47Speaker 7: wandering around and he wandered into the set of Blade
- 1:16:51Speaker 7: Runner and he goes like, wow, look at this set.
- 1:16:53Speaker 7: This is crazy. I need to come up with my
- 1:16:55Speaker 7: own cool idea. So he's just, He's kind of like
- 1:16:59Speaker 7: the character in RoboCop who created RoboCop, the Miguel Fuhrer
- 1:17:04Speaker 7: kind of guy. Yeah. He's like this young upstart guy,
- 1:17:09Speaker 7: and he's trying to make his way in Hollywood. And
- 1:17:14Speaker 7: so he comes up with this idea that he's going
- 1:17:17Speaker 7: to call it RoboCop.
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: All right?
- 1:17:19Speaker 7: And he's going to be like, this is going to
- 1:17:22Speaker 7: be my meal ticket. And everybody looks at the, what
- 1:17:25Speaker 7: are you writing? And I was like, It was like,
- 1:17:26Speaker 7: so he gets a writing partner and they start hashing
- 1:17:29Speaker 7: it out and they're trying not to rip off Blade Runner. And, uh,
- 1:17:33Speaker 7: you know, and, and, and, you know, they go like,
- 1:17:35Speaker 7: what are you working on?
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: It's like, it's called RoboCop.
- 1:17:37Speaker 7: And they're going like, okay, well, that's going to be
- 1:17:39Speaker 7: a piece of shit. And, uh, and, uh, so they, they,
- 1:17:43Speaker 7: they work on the script on nights and weekends and,
- 1:17:47Speaker 7: you know, RoboCop is going to be this great thing.
- 1:17:50Speaker 7: And what's my God? Then, uh, Terminator comes out and
- 1:17:54Speaker 7: they're going like, ah, crap, they're going to think we
- 1:17:56Speaker 7: ripped off Terminator, you know, and so they have to
- 1:17:59Speaker 7: start rewriting it again and they're just like, ah, you know, and,
- 1:18:05Speaker 7: but actually it was the Terminator that got the script
- 1:18:09Speaker 7: in front of people because everybody was desperate to make
- 1:18:11Speaker 7: the next Terminator and, yeah, yeah, and, and so, but
- 1:18:18Speaker 7: everybody was turning it down because the name was so terrible, but,
- 1:18:22Speaker 7: uh what had happened was paul verhoeven had just that
- 1:18:27Speaker 7: flesh and blood movie like was such a bomb he
- 1:18:31Speaker 7: needed to make uh something that would make money to
- 1:18:34Speaker 7: save his career so it's kind of like a francis
- 1:18:36Speaker 7: ford coppola kind of situation where.
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: I'm for the one for them right right i.
- 1:18:41Speaker 9: Did the one for me and nobody liked it it's
- 1:18:43Speaker 9: yeah yeah for them right right and so and so
- 1:18:47Speaker 9: it was just amazing that uh It's amazing that RoboCop
- 1:18:52Speaker 9: is as good as it is.
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: It's true of a lot of those things when you
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: look back. I mean, any movie, to me, the fact
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: that any get made and work at all is kind
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: of a miracle in and of itself. It's true. When
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: you get ones that are as solid as some of
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: the ones over the years, I'm just like, how the
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: hell did this ever happen?
- 1:19:13Speaker 7: But I think the guy being an exec... So he
- 1:19:19Speaker 7: was seeing the story through that point of view. So
- 1:19:23Speaker 7: it was actually the best case scenario. That's what kind
- 1:19:26Speaker 7: of gives it its different thing about it being about
- 1:19:30Speaker 7: boardroom meetings and making a product. This was his life.
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: Yeah, this was this guy's life.
- 1:19:37Speaker 7: It was kind of like Lucas in the prequels. Everything
- 1:19:41Speaker 7: was about economics and sitting in boardrooms and talking about stuff.
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: And there's one thing kids love. No, no.
- 1:19:54Speaker 7: I saw a, I saw a meme the other day, uh,
- 1:19:57Speaker 7: where it was just like a photo of like, uh,
- 1:20:02Speaker 7: people in 1999 going like, george lucas who the hell
- 1:20:07Speaker 7: cares about tariffs and trade routes and that is like
- 1:20:09Speaker 7: a picture of george lucas today laughing his ass.
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: Off just be like i tried to tell you guys
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: this is what's gonna bring down the whole.
- 1:20:17Speaker 2: Galaxy nobody listens to me stupid star wars guy nobody
- 1:20:23Speaker 2: yeah that's.
- 1:20:23Speaker 7: Right that's right i told you and i told you
- 1:20:26Speaker 7: um So, so it's really good documentary. It's amazing. The,
- 1:20:32Speaker 7: the process of the suit and how long it took
- 1:20:35Speaker 7: to put on and like how they were having to,
- 1:20:38Speaker 7: it just kept like, uh, it was just like the
- 1:20:41Speaker 7: work that went into the suit. And cause they were going,
- 1:20:44Speaker 7: basically if this suit sucks, we have no movie.
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: Well, kind of, it is a little bit important. Yeah.
- 1:20:53Speaker 7: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: So it was a good thing.
- 1:20:54Speaker 7: They got row, uh, Robbo team. It was interesting how
- 1:20:57Speaker 7: low budget it was. They shot it in Texas and
- 1:21:01Speaker 7: in Houston. And just like it was kind of like
- 1:21:05Speaker 7: the Wild West out there. It was fascinating what a
- 1:21:09Speaker 7: maniac Paul Verhoeven was. And he had the entire crew
- 1:21:15Speaker 7: hating him.
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: I think all the time I've heard that.
- 1:21:17Speaker 7: Supposedly just a wild, insane man.
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: That's what I've heard.
- 1:21:25Speaker 7: And there's that scene where they blow up the gas station,
- 1:21:28Speaker 7: and it's like Robocop walking in the blast. I mean,
- 1:21:33Speaker 7: that totally could have killed the guy, all right? It
- 1:21:37Speaker 7: was a stuntman wearing the Robocop suit. And if you
- 1:21:41Speaker 7: see that stunt, it's like he was going like... The
- 1:21:46Speaker 7: stunt guy was like.
- 1:21:49Speaker 7: That stunt would never have been allowed.
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: Legally, this shouldn't have happened. People were going to die.
- 1:21:56Speaker 7: Never would have been. Verhoeven was always yelling at the crew,
- 1:22:01Speaker 7: going like, oh, of course you can't do that, or
- 1:22:03Speaker 7: of course you can't do this. If I was in Europe,
- 1:22:05Speaker 7: they would have totally been able to do it.
- 1:22:07Speaker 9: I also would have killed 17 guys making this movie.
- 1:22:12Speaker 7: Exactly, exactly.
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: You wusses won't even get murdered for my movie.
- 1:22:17Speaker 7: That's right, that's right. Yeah, so it was a real,
- 1:22:22Speaker 7: real crazy documentary, and it was really well done. It
- 1:22:26Speaker 7: was great, all the stuff they cut and the reaction
- 1:22:28Speaker 7: to it. I don't, they go into, I can't remember
- 1:22:34Speaker 7: if they go into, no, I get it mixed up
- 1:22:36Speaker 7: with the Phil Tippett documentary that I watched right afterwards,
- 1:22:40Speaker 7: where they talk about Robocop 2 in length, but The
- 1:22:44Speaker 7: interesting thing about the Phil Tippett documentary was that they
- 1:22:48Speaker 7: had Paul Verhoeven interviewed, and he goes like, really, Robocop
- 1:22:52Speaker 7: was directed by three people. It was Phil Tippett, me,
- 1:22:56Speaker 7: and the stunt coordinator, Vic Armstrong, because Vic Armstrong coordinated
- 1:23:01Speaker 7: all the fight scenes and stuff like that, and Phil
- 1:23:03Speaker 7: Tippett did all the special effects, stop-motion stuff, and then
- 1:23:06Speaker 7: I just did the actor-y stuff. But, yeah, yeah. But
- 1:23:12Speaker 7: I think, I mean, every time I watch... of RoboCop,
- 1:23:17Speaker 7: it just gets better and better. And this documentary really
- 1:23:22Speaker 7: pushes it. I think when I watched it as a kid,
- 1:23:25Speaker 7: I liked it, but I think a lot of the
- 1:23:28Speaker 7: meat of the movie went over my head, you know?
- 1:23:32Speaker 7: And now as an adult.
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: Who's worked for... There's so many levels. Yeah, because I mean,
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: it's a very on-the-page, here's your sci-fi story, but then
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: the world that RoboCop creates is so... weird and like
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: kind of making its own commentary along the way that
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: like it lands totally different than I'm assuming that screenplay
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: gave you.
- 1:23:54Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, yeah.
- 1:23:56Speaker 7: I mean, I think he brought like this European, like
- 1:23:59Speaker 7: anti-capitalist thing to it basically, but I always thought, Oh,
- 1:24:03Speaker 7: like that, that stuff was just with the corporation stuff,
- 1:24:07Speaker 7: but really the concept of the, the character of Robocop
- 1:24:11Speaker 7: about being a man with good intentions is, being ground
- 1:24:17Speaker 7: down by the system and then being turned into a
- 1:24:22Speaker 7: product with no humanity and how corporations kind of sap
- 1:24:28Speaker 7: you of your humanity. I think that's like an amazing.
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: This is where we're headed. Yeah, it's an amazing allegory.
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: It might already be there, actually. Yeah, no, I think
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: it is.
- 1:24:40Speaker 7: And what makes Robocop so good is it is such
- 1:24:43Speaker 7: a good story of redemption and how, you know, by
- 1:24:48Speaker 7: Robocop trying to regain his humanity turns the system against
- 1:24:55Speaker 7: him and they want to keep him in this shiny
- 1:24:58Speaker 7: box and that he fights his way out of it
- 1:25:01Speaker 7: and you know, says, what's your name, son? And he
- 1:25:03Speaker 7: says Murphy at the end. It's like just the most
- 1:25:06Speaker 7: perfect ending to a movie.
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: You know? Again, being the stories I've heard about him
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: as a wild man, sometimes I am, like, impressed that
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: he made as awesome and, like, just basic cool storytelling
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: in his character arc. It's like the fact that all
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: of that still remains when you're that insane is kind
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: of impressive in its own way.
- 1:25:30Speaker 7: Well, absolutely. Absolutely. I mean, it doesn't always work for him.
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: You know what I mean?
- 1:25:33Speaker 7: There's always the showgirls.
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: Everybody loves that Invisible Man movie. I don't know what
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: you're talking about.
- 1:25:40Speaker 7: Everybody loves Hollow Man.
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:25:43Speaker 7: But, man, it just, like, was the perfect thing. And
- 1:25:45Speaker 7: I think because Paul Verhoeven was coming off of failures,
- 1:25:47Speaker 7: you know, he was able to buckle down a little bit.
- 1:25:51Speaker 7: You know, everybody kissed his ass after that. And I
- 1:25:53Speaker 7: love Starship Troopers, but it isn't RoboCop. You know, it's not,
- 1:25:57Speaker 7: it doesn't have that. feeling of uh of a character
- 1:26:00Speaker 7: arc that uh that robocop.
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: I think that's the difference it still has the commentary
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: like it still actually has the same vibe as robocop
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: when you watch it but the character develop is nothing
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: like those characters are the most blank slate generic which
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: is fine because you know there's no skill brought to
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: casper yeah yeah And like, it's just our actors are
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: not really delivering. I mean, they're doing what they can
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: in that story, but it's not about character development in
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: that movie.
- 1:26:33Speaker 7: No, no, no. And it's, it's, it's really about, you know,
- 1:26:35Speaker 7: I mean, I think that's sort of his point in
- 1:26:37Speaker 7: that one is just like, look at these pretty naive,
- 1:26:40Speaker 7: vacant people dying terribly. For a system that they don't
- 1:26:45Speaker 7: even understand really what's going on.
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: What we need is Nazi Doogie Howser. That's it.
- 1:26:50Speaker 7: Nazi Doogie Howser that gave us that. Oh, my gosh. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: So, yeah.
- 1:26:57Speaker 7: So that doesn't have like the same oomph for me. Like, yeah,
- 1:27:02Speaker 7: I get the point, but it doesn't have it's not
- 1:27:04Speaker 7: as dramatically satisfying. It's kind of like they made it
- 1:27:07Speaker 7: personal with RoboCop. It's kind of like with the Godzilla movie,
- 1:27:11Speaker 7: the Godzilla Zero or something. Minus one. Minus one. Yeah.
- 1:27:17Speaker 7: That made a Godzilla movie with a human heart to it,
- 1:27:22Speaker 7: a human connection. It made it a personal Godzilla movie.
- 1:27:28Speaker 7: I think that cracked the Godzilla code.
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:27:33Speaker 7: You know, what, what Godzilla had been missing, you know,
- 1:27:35Speaker 7: in a lot of the movies. So, uh, you know, though,
- 1:27:38Speaker 7: Matthew Broderick tried to get back with his mom and girlfriend.
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: He tried, he tried, but it reminded me the, the
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: only other one in that universe. Well, the attempted universe,
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: not the minus one people will very quickly point out.
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: These are different schools. Uh, but the, uh, did you
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: see skull Island? In that weird monster verse over there,
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: which most people hate those new other Godzilla movies, but
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: the one-off that was just King Kong, if you saw that,
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: there's a weird human story mixed in that is so
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: heartfelt that by the end you're like, How did I
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: get sucked into this humanity story in a movie where
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: everyone else is a cartoon? Like, everyone else is either
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: there just to die a really bloody death, or you've
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: got a villain, which, by the way, is not Kong.
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: There's a much bigger, more cartoony villain than Kong in
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: that movie. And by the end, you're like, that guy
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: is ridiculous. These characters are all dead and ridiculous. We've
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: got two leads that, once again, have no charisma or character,
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: which is ridiculous because the actors are amazing. But in
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: this story, those characters are nothing. And then you get
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: to this one, and it's one side story that somehow
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: delivers so much heart that you're like, I can't believe
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: I got sucked into caring about this guy in this movie. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:29:09Speaker 7: I love Kong Skull Island.
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: If you haven't seen it, that's the best, yeah, that's
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: the best one of the bunch. And sadly, there's no Godzilla,
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: but it is still a whole lot of monster fighting,
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: don't you worry. Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 1:29:21Speaker 7: No, it was great. It was great. I mean, I like, man,
- 1:29:24Speaker 7: I like the Adam Wingard gods of the Kong movies.
- 1:29:27Speaker 7: I do.
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: I like them. Well, it's like, I don't, that's the thing.
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: I've seen people just talk trash about them. Yeah. And
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: I'm like, I get it. Like I get it. But
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: then I watched the last two. And the thing is,
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: they're all indistinguishable outside of skull Island, which because it's
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: its own separate thing. But like those last two, I
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: couldn't tell you what happened and what, which one, where
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: I don't, it's all just the same big, weird upside
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: down Kong universe story. Um, And I get in there
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: and I'm like, yeah, it's fine. I'm just so pleased
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: to get to see Adam Wingard playing with his Godzilla toys.
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: I'm like, there's so many worse people you could have
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: handed that to. What little I know of Adam Wingard,
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: he seems like an awesome dude. He liked making some
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: low-budget horror stuff. And now some studio came along and went, hey,
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: we just dropped this bankroll of money in front of you.
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: You want to play with Godzilla toys? And he's like,
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: fuck okay right what am i gonna say no like
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: right exactly if the fans like it i get to
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: make multi-million dollar godzilla.
- 1:30:32Speaker 7: Movies exactly exactly i don't care if.
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: Anyone likes it i get to do what i want
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: and that's that's awesome like i appreciate that part of
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: it so much yeah i watch it i'm like i
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: don't know it's yeah things are going on monsters are
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: fighting whatever It's fine. It's totally fine. But I so
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: appreciate just the small-time indie movie geek that he is
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: getting handed that studio money to just go do your thing, man.
- 1:30:59Speaker 7: I'm so happy. Yeah, I'm just.
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: So thrilled to see that happen.
- 1:31:03Speaker 7: Yeah, because from the interviews, I mean, he's basically, you know,
- 1:31:09Speaker 7: coming from the South, I mean, he's basically like an Alabama,
- 1:31:14Speaker 7: white trash, scum of the earth kind of guy, kind
- 1:31:16Speaker 7: of like me. and uh you know so i go
- 1:31:18Speaker 7: like it's good i love it when the white trash
- 1:31:21Speaker 7: win one.
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: Once again like if somebody just came up one day
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: and went hey you want to make a multi-million dollar
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: platform movie of a thing that you've played with your
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: whole life as toys you're like uh yeah i don't
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: get it man why would well i mean people talk
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: so much smack about it i'm just like What difference
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: does it make, man? What's weird is, once again, back
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: to our original point, in this world that we currently
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: live in, how are they still making those movies? I mean,
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: I guess overseas money? Because I feel like they don't
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: really do well in America. People seem to hate them
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: in the fan community. And they're sort of so self-contained
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: in their own little world that I feel like they don't...
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: they're not really accessible to regular people. So unless you're
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: like a monster movie, kind of a dork, why would
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: you even go to them? Right. And like a monster movie,
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: kind of dorks hate that movie or that whole series
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: of movies. And they want Godzilla minus one. So, right.
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: How are there like five of those movies out there?
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: I don't understand. Like the last two that they handed Wingard,
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: I was like, dude, I don't understand how you're doing it,
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: but cash those checks, man. I was like, yeah, I
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: am so impressed that you get to make these movies
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: because people do not like these movies. I know. And
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: you are being handed millions of dollars to do it again.
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: That makes no sense to me in the world we
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: live in when they're barely handing out money to make movies, period.
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: Let alone the millions and millions of dollars they're handing
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: them to make these movies that nobody likes. It's so amazing.
- 1:33:00Speaker 7: I love it.
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: I love it.
- 1:33:01Speaker 7: I mean, yeah, 2024 was like, the banner year of
- 1:33:04Speaker 7: Godzilla movies. We had two pretty kick-ass Godzilla movies, I thought. So,
- 1:33:08Speaker 7: you know, it was like, uh, I was all right, but, but,
- 1:33:10Speaker 7: and totally different sides of the spectrum. You know, you
- 1:33:12Speaker 7: had like the serious, you know, allegorial, allegorical, uh, Godzilla, uh,
- 1:33:18Speaker 7: black and white. And then you had like, uh, and
- 1:33:21Speaker 7: then you had like the 1970s fun, you know, Godzilla versus, uh, uh, uh,
- 1:33:28Speaker 7: what do we call it? Uh, uh, Megalon.
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:33:32Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: Now they're buddies. Now they're hanging out.
- 1:33:34Speaker 7: Now they're buddies. I mean, it was just like, hey, man,
- 1:33:39Speaker 7: Zero-G Godzilla jumping around boulders, man.
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: Hell yeah. Kong gets himself a power glove.
- 1:33:46Speaker 7: Ah, yeah.
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: He's like playing old school Nintendo and shit. It's going
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: to be awesome.
- 1:33:51Speaker 7: It was just a table flip moment, man. You know,
- 1:33:53Speaker 7: those movies have personality and they have fun to them. So,
- 1:33:56Speaker 7: you know, I'm like.
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: They really do. Again, I don't think they're great.
- 1:33:59Speaker 3: Yeah, sure.
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: Sure.
- 1:34:00Speaker 7: Yeah, but they are fun. They are fun.
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: What I find more puzzling is that they keep bringing
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: in human characters like we give a shit. Like this
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: one brought in a whole new bunch of characters. And
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: I'm like, we didn't care about the last movie. Most
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: of those actors didn't even come back because nobody gave
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: a shit about them. Why are you bothering with all
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: these new humans? I do like, I appreciate that they
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: carried on the little girl into like the teenage version
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: of her. That was interesting that they at least kept
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: her around. But I'm like... All these people are bringing
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: in like we care. Like, dude, just get the monsters fighting.
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: Quit wasting our time with human stories. If we didn't
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: want to see Breaking Bad do it years ago, we
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: don't want to see you guys do it now either.
- 1:34:45Speaker 7: Right, right. Yeah, the thing about King of the Monsters was,
- 1:34:51Speaker 7: on the plus side, it had the most epic Rodan
- 1:34:57Speaker 7: scene possible. finally given Rodan some respect.
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: Rodan is a jam. I love some Rodan. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:35:03Speaker 7: And Rodan, I actually went back and watched the original Rodan.
- 1:35:06Speaker 7: I had never actually seen it. I always thought the
- 1:35:08Speaker 7: thing was like, you know, one of the most ridiculous
- 1:35:10Speaker 7: monsters in the Godzilla team-up movies, but Rodan is a
- 1:35:14Speaker 7: pretty fucking great movie.
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: He's kind of my go-to. I have way more Rodans
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: in little plastic forms sitting around my home than a
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: normal person should. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:35:24Speaker 7: It's a great movie. It's a great movie.
- 1:35:26Speaker 4: Um.
- 1:35:28Speaker 7: Uh, but yeah, yeah. No, but the problem with the
- 1:35:30Speaker 7: downside of King of the Monsters was, yeah, like it was,
- 1:35:33Speaker 7: it felt like a Godzilla movie because all the people
- 1:35:35Speaker 7: scenes were so crappy.
- 1:35:38Speaker 1: Dumb. It's like, I don't, well, it just seems like
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: we're wasting time with all this dialogue. I'm like, but
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: we don't care. Whatever you're saying, we don't remember from
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: the last movie and we don't care in this movie.
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: So just get to monsters fighting. Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. Adam,
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: you know we don't care. Just do it. Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:35:57Speaker 7: That's what's good about it.
- 1:35:59Speaker 1: But I'm sure there's a studio going, but we have
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: a TV series to set up. We have to keep
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: the MonsterVerse going so we can make money over here
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: on this platform. So you probably have to put in
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: dumb scenes where they talk about things that we can
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: tie in later on a TV series that also no
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: one really pays attention to.
- 1:36:16Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah. I've got a subscription to Apple TV. Monarch
- 1:36:20Speaker 7: is on that, but I've not really wanted to sit.
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: You and everyone else in the world. Which is insane
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: because it's got Kurt Russell. Like, I should be totally sold.
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: It's got Russell and Russell Jr. I want to watch that,
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: but I don't really. I can't totally convince myself I
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: want to watch that. Definitely not enough to get a
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: channel that I don't care about. I have yet to
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: delve into the Monarch world.
- 1:36:49Speaker 7: If I try it, I'll tell you about it.
- 1:36:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: Well, I wasn't going this way, but you just reminded
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: me I watched this, so I'll throw this in the
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: middle of it. I watched Terminator 3. Oh, okay. Do
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: you remember Terminator 3? Because I feel like no one
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: remembers Terminator 3.
- 1:37:10Speaker 7: I remember two things about Terminator 3, all right? I
- 1:37:14Speaker 7: remember watching it and going like, uh. wow, they spent
- 1:37:20Speaker 7: so much money on this.
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: For no good reason.
- 1:37:25Speaker 7: And like, I think like there's like a car chase
- 1:37:28Speaker 7: sequence with like a truck plowing through things. And I'm
- 1:37:31Speaker 7: just going like, this is expensive. And the other thing
- 1:37:37Speaker 7: I really took away from terminator three was probably like
- 1:37:40Speaker 7: one of just my favorite things of all time was
- 1:37:44Speaker 7: the uh Schwarzenegger acting in that scene where he's like
- 1:37:49Speaker 7: I am a machine and then he like starts pounding
- 1:37:53Speaker 7: on a car like uh like a rock-em-sock-em robot and
- 1:37:56Speaker 7: I'm like going like this is so this is so
- 1:37:58Speaker 7: campy and bad and Ed Wood I liked it for
- 1:38:01Speaker 7: that reason but well what did you.
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: Think here's I mean I'd seen it once a million
- 1:38:10Speaker 1: years ago i didn't even bother with the theater it
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: must have been on cable for free because i don't
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: remember putting any effort into it i just eventually was
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: like all right it's terminator i'll watch it right but
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: um yeah this is the one thing i want to
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: bring back and like i can't like you can say
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: this out loud and it just doesn't process right right
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: time clear Danes was in a Terminator movie it just
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: doesn't make any sense because I'm like no she's just
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: Claire Danes like she just she seems so out of
- 1:38:40Speaker 1: place and I love me some Claire Danes but she
- 1:38:42Speaker 1: just doesn't fit in what's going on really but they
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: keep trying and she's doing what she can and Yeah.
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: The takeaway, I guess, is also, like, the second one
- 1:38:55Speaker 1: works with what's-his-face as John Connor, but because he's a
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: dumb teenager and he's supposed to come off as a
- 1:39:02Speaker 1: dumb teenager. Right. But you watch it and you're like, oh,
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: Nick Stahl can actually, like, act, so, like, no offense, Furlong,
- 1:39:09Speaker 1: but I'm like, Furlong works because he's supposed to be
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: a dumb teenager. Right. And he'd come back for this movie,
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: I feel like it just would have, I mean, not
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: because he really works, but... Like, it would have been
- 1:39:19Speaker 1: so weird seeing a slightly more grown-up version of John
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: Connor trying to do this. I don't know. He's just
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: such a weird actor. Where Nick Stahl is, like, a
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: solid actor. So he's, again, doing what he can. But, like,
- 1:39:33Speaker 1: the problem is there's no story, really. Right. Like, it's just...
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: The other ones at least, like, one and two, like,
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: do their own thing. Like, one is groundbreaking, amazing sci-fi.
- 1:39:46Speaker 1: Two is just like, what if we turn this up
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: to 11 and get our own weird other stuff on
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: top of that? Right. And then you jump forward, and
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: I like the other last two movies that came out,
- 1:39:56Speaker 1: even as ridiculous as they are. I enjoy them for
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: what they're worth.
- 1:40:00Speaker 11: Oh.
- 1:40:00Speaker 1: Skipping over four. But three is the one that, like,
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: doesn't really have an idea. Right. It's the one that
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: feels like it's like, hey, remember two? Yeah. Let's do
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: that some more. Only this time it's a girl. That's
- 1:40:13Speaker 1: the whole sales pitch. That's the whole sales pitch of
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: this movie sitting in the boardroom. But what if the
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: Terminator was a blonde chick? And you'd be like, oh.
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: Now I'm on board. I'm like, that girl just doesn't
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: do anything.
- 1:40:28Speaker 7: No, she doesn't play it. And they go like, okay,
- 1:40:32Speaker 7: so in the third one, is it going to be
- 1:40:33Speaker 7: an exoskeleton or is it going to be liquid metal?
- 1:40:36Speaker 7: And they kind of just go like, uh.
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: Both blonde girl. How about that? Like, again, it like,
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: doesn't like that. That's the thing. Like two takes it
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: up a notch. Two is a whole nother thing going on.
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: Three is like, no, it's kind of like those other movie. Like,
- 1:40:52Speaker 1: it just doesn't feel like they had anything to bring
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: to the table other than, Hey, it's a blonde chick. Yeah.
- 1:40:57Speaker 7: Does it?
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: That's it. Yeah.
- 1:40:59Speaker 7: I don't, I don't, I don't really remember anything other
- 1:41:02Speaker 7: than Schwarzenegger's performance in that scene. And, uh, I was
- 1:41:08Speaker 7: just watching money just being spent at such an insane amount,
- 1:41:12Speaker 7: an insane rate during that one.
- 1:41:14Speaker 1: The only shot I remembered from watching it the first
- 1:41:18Speaker 1: time that I remember being like, oh, that was cool.
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: And it still is. Schwarzenegger with a full ass coffin
- 1:41:26Speaker 1: thrown up on his shoulder getting like blown away with
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: bullets and he's just shielding it with a coffin that's
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: a cool shot like that shot and that whole little
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: scene is pretty cool in a movie that doesn't know
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: what to do with itself otherwise except here's the thing
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: I totally forgot about do you remember how the movie
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: ends Well.
- 1:41:48Speaker 7: They fail, right? And it blows up.
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: Spoilers for this movie from a long damn time ago.
- 1:41:54Speaker 1: But I had totally forgotten how it ended. So I
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: was just like, oh, the whole time they're trying to...
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: It's 2003. So if you haven't seen it since 2003,
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: spoiler alert. Right.
- 1:42:04Speaker 3: But.
- 1:42:05Speaker 1: Yeah, the whole time they're trying to, at first they're
- 1:42:07Speaker 1: trying to stop this from happening, and then at some
- 1:42:10Speaker 1: point it's just like, well, okay, the rise of the
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: machines is going to happen, the bombs are going to
- 1:42:15Speaker 1: go off or whatever, so we've got to get you
- 1:42:17Speaker 1: to a safe place. You know, we've got to get
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: here and try to disarm it and keep that from happening.
- 1:42:22Speaker 1: But what it really is, is get you to a
- 1:42:24Speaker 1: safe place. So the whole, again, spoiler, the whole thing
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: is the Terminator essentially lying to John Connor to get
- 1:42:32Speaker 1: him into a bunker so that he will survive. And
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: in the most, like, Planet of the Apes 2 move, like,
- 1:42:41Speaker 1: the end of the movie is just the destruction of humanity. Yeah.
- 1:42:46Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: They blow it. At the end of the movie, he
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: tricks the two of them into the bunker so that
- 1:42:51Speaker 1: they'll survive when all of humanity mostly dies, the machines
- 1:42:55Speaker 1: rise up, and then in the future, in the aftermath
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: of all this, when we need a hero to be
- 1:43:01Speaker 1: the general fighting the monsters... AKA robots. Um, it'll be there.
- 1:43:07Speaker 1: He'll still be alive and he can go on to
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: fight in the future, but that's where it leaves us.
- 1:43:11Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:43:12Speaker 1: It just stops.
- 1:43:13Speaker 2: The movie ends with humanity about to be exploded and
- 1:43:18Speaker 2: robots take over the earth. I was like, you know,
- 1:43:22Speaker 2: for a movie that has nothing going on for the
- 1:43:24Speaker 2: entire rest of it, it delivers a closing scene and
- 1:43:27Speaker 2: you're like.
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: Holy shit. Really? They just did that. Yep. Yep. Totally
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: forgot about that part. I was like, all right, I
- 1:43:35Speaker 1: give you points for an ending. That is a hell
- 1:43:37Speaker 1: of a way to end a movie. Yep.
- 1:43:40Speaker 7: I agree. I agree.
- 1:43:43Speaker 1: I totally blocked that part out. Yeah.
- 1:43:45Speaker 7: And then we got the forgettable McG one that has
- 1:43:48Speaker 7: maybe like one or two good shots in it.
- 1:43:50Speaker 1: I still avoided that one. I can't make myself care. Yeah, no,
- 1:43:56Speaker 1: it's not good. It's even got decent actors, but I
- 1:43:59Speaker 1: don't care. I don't want to sit through a dumb
- 1:44:01Speaker 1: McG sci-fi extravaganza. I just don't care. But the ones
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: after that are dumb Terminator movies, and I like those.
- 1:44:10Speaker 7: Yeah, I really like Genesis.
- 1:44:12Speaker 1: It's so ridiculous, and I love it. I do, too.
- 1:44:16Speaker 7: I had such a good time with Genesis. And Dark
- 1:44:20Speaker 7: Fate had some good action scenes. Again, I was watching
- 1:44:22Speaker 7: Dark Fate going like, They spent so much money. Oh
- 1:44:25Speaker 7: my god. This is like Terminator 1, but with like 77,000
- 1:44:28Speaker 7: times the budget, you know?
- 1:44:29Speaker 1: And, um.
- 1:44:34Speaker 1: They just come up with interesting plots on those last
- 1:44:37Speaker 1: two that I'm like, all right, it's ridiculous, but I'm
- 1:44:40Speaker 1: on board because this is silly and I'm having fun
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: with it. And the effects look good and the action
- 1:44:45Speaker 1: is good. Yeah. Yeah. I'm like, I like these versions
- 1:44:48Speaker 1: of this. Now, to me, by the time we hit two,
- 1:44:52Speaker 1: the universe should collapse upon itself. Yes. Because.
- 1:44:55Speaker 7: Yes.
- 1:44:56Speaker 1: I mean, it's ridiculous enough that you have time travel,
- 1:44:58Speaker 1: but if you had time travel and looped around this
- 1:45:01Speaker 1: many damn times into your own timeline, it should just
- 1:45:05Speaker 1: implode upon itself. Absolutely. Yeah.
- 1:45:08Speaker 7: John-Claude Van Damme's time cop is having an aneurysm.
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: There's no way. The world would still be around at
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: any point in this series. Especially if you factor in
- 1:45:19Speaker 1: the TV series. The TV series works in a whole
- 1:45:22Speaker 1: other arm into that.
- 1:45:24Speaker 7: Oh my god.
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: A whole new arrow back into the timeline. That makes
- 1:45:27Speaker 1: no sense. So, yeah. There's no way in hell any
- 1:45:31Speaker 1: of this Terminator timeline is possible. Even in a sci-fi sense.
- 1:45:36Speaker 1: It should kill everyone.
- 1:45:37Speaker 7: That's true. That's true. So, my favorite... My official favorite
- 1:45:43Speaker 7: TV show... out right now is black mirror because I'm
- 1:45:47Speaker 7: sad and depressed.
- 1:45:49Speaker 1: Cause there's no hope for humanity. I just, I love.
- 1:45:54Speaker 7: The writing on that show. And I love that. It's just, just,
- 1:45:59Speaker 7: you know, it's like three weeks into the future. What
- 1:46:01Speaker 7: was the, uh, max headroom thing? Like 10 minutes into
- 1:46:04Speaker 7: the future or something.
- 1:46:05Speaker 1: Um, I mean, I'm kind of waiting for max to
- 1:46:08Speaker 1: show up and hopefully save.
- 1:46:10Speaker 7: Oh, I hope so.
- 1:46:11Speaker 1: That's the future we need.
- 1:46:13Speaker 7: So the new season of Black Mirror came out and
- 1:46:18Speaker 7: I know they've got a Paul Giamatti episode. So I'm
- 1:46:24Speaker 7: so excited because I think he's my favorite actor. So
- 1:46:26Speaker 7: my favorite actor on my favorite show. I can't wait.
- 1:46:29Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:46:30Speaker 7: But I watched the first episode of Black Mirror new
- 1:46:34Speaker 7: season and it's so good and it's so sad. And
- 1:46:41Speaker 7: I don't think I've even watched all of The Black
- 1:46:43Speaker 7: Mirror is because it takes me like four or five.
- 1:46:48Speaker 7: It can take, it's probably been two weeks since I've
- 1:46:50Speaker 7: watched the last one. I'm just trying to steady my
- 1:46:53Speaker 7: nerves to watch the next one. But this first, that's
- 1:46:56Speaker 7: usually my reaction to Black Mirror. I was like, that
- 1:46:58Speaker 7: was awesome. I needed a shower and I need to
- 1:47:01Speaker 7: take a nap and I need to watch some cartoons.
- 1:47:03Speaker 1: Go cry in the hallway for a while.
- 1:47:05Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:47:06Speaker 1: I'll talk about how awesome it was if I can speak. Yes. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:47:11Speaker 1: That's Black Mirror for you.
- 1:47:13Speaker 7: That was Black Mirror. But I love the gut punch.
- 1:47:16Speaker 7: Every episode is a gut punch. And so this new
- 1:47:21Speaker 7: one is great. This lady gets a brain tumor. Already great.
- 1:47:28Speaker 1: Fun already.
- 1:47:30Speaker 7: And so she's going to die. And this company says, like, hey,
- 1:47:33Speaker 7: we can take this part of her brain that's damaged
- 1:47:37Speaker 7: and we can recreate it in the cloud. And she
- 1:47:42Speaker 7: will be, like, connected to our servers, and she'll be
- 1:47:45Speaker 7: able to live, you know, and she'll have a second
- 1:47:49Speaker 7: chance of life, and you'll be able to, you know,
- 1:47:50Speaker 7: try to have kids and, you know, continue, you know,
- 1:47:54Speaker 7: your normal life. And so the guy signs the paper,
- 1:47:59Speaker 7: and he gets it, and his wife seems fine. But
- 1:48:03Speaker 7: at one point, she starts, in the middle of a conversation, she, like, will, like,
- 1:48:09Speaker 7: go into an advertisement.
- 1:48:13Speaker 1: So they'll be like, really is where we're all headed
- 1:48:15Speaker 1: by the way. Right.
- 1:48:16Speaker 7: And so she'll be like cooking something she goes like
- 1:48:20Speaker 7: uh she'll say like uh feel like she'll say like
- 1:48:23Speaker 7: rice krispies the best thing in the world you know
- 1:48:25Speaker 7: or something like that he's like what do you say
- 1:48:27Speaker 7: and he goes like i didn't say nothing and she
- 1:48:29Speaker 7: goes so they find out that okay, for her not
- 1:48:32Speaker 7: to have ads, they've got to up their subscription.
- 1:48:35Speaker 12: And this is what, when I was talking about wearing
- 1:48:42Speaker 12: a company's name on your shirt, that was just the
- 1:48:46Speaker 12: tip of the iceberg.
- 1:48:47Speaker 1: This is where we're headed. This is where we're selling
- 1:48:51Speaker 1: our soul. Yeah.
- 1:48:52Speaker 7: This episode gets so dark and sick and sad and amazing. It, it,
- 1:49:01Speaker 7: It comes to a point where if you get the
- 1:49:02Speaker 7: premium deluxe version of this service to keep you alive,
- 1:49:07Speaker 7: it's insanely expensive.
- 1:49:09Speaker 1: Of course.
- 1:49:11Speaker 7: But you can control your hormonal and moods through the app.
- 1:49:16Speaker 7: So you can crank up your pleasure sensors and whatever
- 1:49:24Speaker 7: you need, you can crank it up to 11. All right?
- 1:49:28Speaker 7: And so.
- 1:49:30Speaker 1: the service is very, very expensive.
- 1:49:32Speaker 7: So this guy is working like double shifts all the
- 1:49:35Speaker 7: time to, uh, maintain his wife's, uh, uh, basically the
- 1:49:40Speaker 7: thing keeping her alive and they keep changing the, the
- 1:49:42Speaker 7: service rules on them. And he's having to keep like
- 1:49:45Speaker 7: paying more just to get, you know, basic stuff. And, um,
- 1:49:50Speaker 7: at one point he, he splurges on the advanced premium and,
- 1:49:55Speaker 7: you know, and it's just like, she's like stoned out
- 1:49:57Speaker 7: of her mind. They go to like their, their, average,
- 1:50:00Speaker 7: their usual anniversary thing. And, uh, they crank up that
- 1:50:05Speaker 7: thing and it's like, everything is like super sensory input,
- 1:50:10Speaker 7: you know, like she's stoned or something. And so it
- 1:50:13Speaker 7: was like a really good, you know, kind of on
- 1:50:15Speaker 7: the nose, but of good, uh, metaphor for like, you know,
- 1:50:19Speaker 7: technology addiction and, um.
- 1:50:22Speaker 1: Well technology and, and just the way people are like
- 1:50:26Speaker 1: willing to pay whatever to control themselves. Yes. Like, that's
- 1:50:31Speaker 1: what I think is always interesting is like, it's just
- 1:50:34Speaker 1: a shade away from what, like, I can't tell you,
- 1:50:37Speaker 1: like there's few people I know of that aren't on
- 1:50:41Speaker 1: medication now. Yeah. To regulate their brain.
- 1:50:44Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:50:44Speaker 1: Yeah. And I'm like, it's, Sometimes I feel, yes, that
- 1:50:48Speaker 1: is needed, but I also feel like there's a lot
- 1:50:50Speaker 1: of times that we're just doing that because that's what
- 1:50:53Speaker 1: people do now. So it's like, I feel like this
- 1:50:56Speaker 1: is just a little sci-fi nudge into the be like,
- 1:51:00Speaker 1: and they all be happy. All you need is to
- 1:51:02Speaker 1: pay this every month and your brain will be happy.
- 1:51:05Speaker 1: And I'm like, isn't that what we're doing with drugs
- 1:51:07Speaker 1: right now?
- 1:51:08Speaker 7: So that's it. Yeah, it's a great it's a great,
- 1:51:11Speaker 7: great episode. I mean, I can't recommend it because it's
- 1:51:16Speaker 7: so sad. I mean, I can recommend it, but you
- 1:51:18Speaker 7: just got to know you're going to have to take
- 1:51:19Speaker 7: a week off from work.
- 1:51:21Speaker 1: Yeah, just know you'll be sad.
- 1:51:22Speaker 7: You'll be sad after you're done. All right. But yeah.
- 1:51:25Speaker 7: So what do you got?
- 1:51:27Speaker 1: All right. Well, mine, while I'm sticking with a lot
- 1:51:30Speaker 1: of sci fi here, because I feel like I don't
- 1:51:31Speaker 1: get I talk about a lot of horror otherwise. But
- 1:51:33Speaker 1: this gives me a good chance to talk about ridiculous
- 1:51:35Speaker 1: sci fi with you. This is the future world I've
- 1:51:39Speaker 1: been looking for. None of this crazy putting stuff in
- 1:51:43Speaker 1: your brains and running CG ads. What I need is
- 1:51:47Speaker 1: a robot lady.
- 1:51:48Speaker 7: Okay.
- 1:51:51Speaker 1: I'm assuming I had this taped off a cable on
- 1:51:55Speaker 1: a VHS tape. That tells you how long ago I
- 1:51:58Speaker 1: saw this last and had forgotten 99% of it. So,
- 1:52:03Speaker 1: I re-watched Cherry 2000.
- 1:52:05Speaker 7: All right. All right.
- 1:52:07Speaker 1: Cool.
- 1:52:07Speaker 7: Now, I've only seen the, like, first 15 minutes of it. So,
- 1:52:11Speaker 7: tell me. Sell me on it.
- 1:52:12Speaker 1: Well, that's what you need is what happens in the
- 1:52:15Speaker 1: first 15 minutes. You can be happy. All you need
- 1:52:19Speaker 1: is to get yourself a robo-person. Right. I feel like
- 1:52:21Speaker 1: this is what we need. Like, I watch people just
- 1:52:25Speaker 1: fighting to keep dumb relationships. And I'm just like, just
- 1:52:29Speaker 1: who cares? We just don't want to be by ourselves.
- 1:52:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:52:32Speaker 1: All we need is a thing there that sort of
- 1:52:34Speaker 1: represents another person, and you do the things you like
- 1:52:37Speaker 1: to do, and it gets you through your life. And
- 1:52:39Speaker 1: that's what we need. This humanity, connecting with other humanity,
- 1:52:43Speaker 1: it's just a lot to ask.
- 1:52:45Speaker 7: Let's be real.
- 1:52:47Speaker 1: So, I like the idea of this. I'm looking to
- 1:52:50Speaker 1: Japan to lead the way because their dolls that are
- 1:52:52Speaker 1: out there right now are worlds above what we do
- 1:52:56Speaker 1: in this dumb country. So, they have already kind of
- 1:52:58Speaker 1: perfected a good amount of the physical stuff. We just
- 1:53:01Speaker 1: need that mechanical, moving, emotional chip to be implanted in
- 1:53:07Speaker 1: there so we can trick ourselves into thinking we're with
- 1:53:10Speaker 1: a human being. So that's what we're, you know, in
- 1:53:13Speaker 1: our opening of Cherry 2000, we're way in the distant
- 1:53:17Speaker 1: future of 2017, I believe. I think it really is.
- 1:53:25Speaker 1: Double check. Yep. In the year 2017. So the, uh,
- 1:53:30Speaker 1: it's this weird mixture of like, there's normal cities and
- 1:53:34Speaker 1: everything operates like day to day. This dude works in
- 1:53:37Speaker 1: an office kind of nonsense. And then like you go
- 1:53:40Speaker 1: out into other parts of the country and or world
- 1:53:42Speaker 1: and it's post-apocalyptic wasteland. Nice. It's a nice balance there. And, um,
- 1:53:49Speaker 1: What I feel like they dropped the ball on in
- 1:53:52Speaker 1: the production of these gals, I guess they make dudes too,
- 1:53:56Speaker 1: I don't know, but this one in particular is a gal,
- 1:53:59Speaker 1: and she has problems with getting wet, which I feel
- 1:54:02Speaker 1: like you would want to be able to wash down
- 1:54:04Speaker 1: your robo-girl, just for many practical reasons.
- 1:54:08Speaker 7: But, in the beginning of this, they're having this.
- 1:54:12Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, it's just, it's an important aspect of,
- 1:54:15Speaker 1: you know, this operation. But... Yeah, they're having a romantic time,
- 1:54:21Speaker 1: and they end up on the floor, and for some
- 1:54:24Speaker 1: reason they clog up the sink, and water's running all
- 1:54:27Speaker 1: over the place, and she gets wet, and it shorts
- 1:54:29Speaker 1: her out. And they've quit making this specific version. You
- 1:54:33Speaker 1: can get some other random girls, but they're lame. He
- 1:54:36Speaker 1: doesn't want those. He wants a Cherry 2000. This is
- 1:54:38Speaker 1: the girl he's in love with. Right. But there's a little,
- 1:54:43Speaker 1: once again, it's all about CD technology. This is the future.
- 1:54:46Speaker 1: So there's a little CD in her head that you
- 1:54:49Speaker 1: can take out, and that's her personality, essentially. And if
- 1:54:51Speaker 1: you get another Cherry 2000, she'll look like your girlfriend,
- 1:54:55Speaker 1: and you can put the memories in her head, and
- 1:54:57Speaker 1: you got your girl back.
- 1:54:58Speaker 7: All right, all right.
- 1:54:59Speaker 1: So this is where we get our situation here. So
- 1:55:03Speaker 1: he's got to then... They don't make them in this
- 1:55:06Speaker 1: part of the world. There's still places out there where
- 1:55:10Speaker 1: he's heard tale you can get one. So he has
- 1:55:12Speaker 1: to head out into the wastelands and hire a detective
- 1:55:16Speaker 1: slash bounty hunter type person to go track down a model.
- 1:55:20Speaker 1: And then he ends up getting sucked along for the
- 1:55:22Speaker 1: ride for stupid reasons. So yeah, there's a lot of
- 1:55:27Speaker 1: crazy wasteland stuff going on. I totally forgot Tim Thomerson
- 1:55:31Speaker 1: is in it, which sells me on any movie. Absolutely.
- 1:55:34Speaker 1: Tim Thomerson is a delight in every dumb thing he's
- 1:55:38Speaker 1: ever made.
- 1:55:39Speaker 7: Absolutely. He adds a star and a half to anything.
- 1:55:42Speaker 1: Any movie gets better with Tim Thomerson.
- 1:55:46Speaker 7: That's right.
- 1:55:46Speaker 1: So, yeah. So we get a lot of crazy post-apocalyptic stuff.
- 1:55:50Speaker 1: And then the whole project is trying to get this
- 1:55:53Speaker 1: robo-woman to replace this broken robo-woman. And along the way,
- 1:55:57Speaker 1: he's doing it with the bounty hunter slash detective girl
- 1:56:01Speaker 1: is Melanie Griffith, who I have hit and miss as
- 1:56:05Speaker 1: much as I have like Dakota. Melanie is a little better, actually,
- 1:56:08Speaker 1: as it goes in the right project. She can be
- 1:56:11Speaker 1: really good. Yeah, I don't know where this falls, really.
- 1:56:14Speaker 1: It's like it's ridiculous that she's there. But at the
- 1:56:17Speaker 1: same time, the whole movie is ridiculous. So it sort
- 1:56:20Speaker 1: of sells it that, you know, along the way to
- 1:56:24Speaker 1: him getting his fake girl. He's kind of developing feelings
- 1:56:28Speaker 1: for this real human woman.
- 1:56:30Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:56:30Speaker 1: So that is the gimmick of the movie, essentially. Right.
- 1:56:33Speaker 1: That along the way, they're creating like this action post-apocalyptic
- 1:56:37Speaker 1: rom-com where they're kind of falling for each other while
- 1:56:41Speaker 1: trying to get his replacement girl.
- 1:56:44Speaker 7: Got it. I mean, it sounds great.
- 1:56:46Speaker 1: It's pretty fun. It's ridiculous and low budget and as
- 1:56:50Speaker 1: cheesy as you can get. And yet... A lot of
- 1:56:53Speaker 1: that stuff works pretty well, I gotta say. I was
- 1:56:55Speaker 1: happy with it.
- 1:56:57Speaker 7: Now, that's cool. It's one of the 80s apocalypse movies
- 1:57:00Speaker 7: I haven't seen yet. That was the thing.
- 1:57:03Speaker 1: I forgot so much of that middle post-apocalyptic part. I
- 1:57:07Speaker 1: just knew they'd set up at the beginning that she
- 1:57:09Speaker 1: gets busted, and then that's the whole thing is him
- 1:57:11Speaker 1: trying to replace her the whole movie. So, yeah, I
- 1:57:13Speaker 1: forgot all the specifics of the post-apocalyptic thing, which is
- 1:57:17Speaker 1: weird and semi-surreal at times. It's very strange.
- 1:57:23Speaker 7: What's crazy, though, I was talking to my youngest the
- 1:57:27Speaker 7: other day, and she was saying a lot of guys in,
- 1:57:33Speaker 7: I guess, her age and teenagers and stuff, they are
- 1:57:39Speaker 7: now dating AI girlfriends. And they're saying, like, I'm in
- 1:57:43Speaker 7: a relationship with this AI. It's already happening.
- 1:57:48Speaker 1: I have seen stuff on TV that they're showing, like,
- 1:57:52Speaker 1: it is a service you can get that's an AI girlfriend. Yeah.
- 1:57:55Speaker 1: And she, like, listens when you complain about things. And
- 1:57:59Speaker 1: I was like, you know, if you're not going to
- 1:58:01Speaker 1: put that in an imported Japanese robo body, don't waste
- 1:58:04Speaker 1: my time. I'm looking for one of the fancy deluxe
- 1:58:09Speaker 1: chassis robo cars. girls, and you're not going to give
- 1:58:11Speaker 1: me that. Don't waste my time.
- 1:58:13Speaker 7: Don't waste my time. Don't waste my time. I'll get
- 1:58:16Speaker 7: a therapist.
- 1:58:17Speaker 1: I want to get one of those, not even for
- 1:58:19Speaker 1: the full reason. I just want a cuddling model. Is
- 1:58:21Speaker 1: that enough? Yeah, yeah, yeah. I just want to cuddle
- 1:58:24Speaker 1: with one at night, and then she can be like, okay,
- 1:58:27Speaker 1: let's make dinner. She is a lot of trouble. Let's
- 1:58:30Speaker 1: not bother making soup. Like, she'll just acknowledge that I'm
- 1:58:34Speaker 1: too lazy to make food, and she won't be upset
- 1:58:36Speaker 1: about it. That's how you know she's not a real girl.
- 1:58:39Speaker 7: Right, right.
- 1:58:40Speaker 1: She will put up with my bullshit. Right, right. That's
- 1:58:43Speaker 1: how you know she's not a real girl. That's it.
- 1:58:46Speaker 1: That's it. Yeah.
- 1:58:47Speaker 7: Well, I mean, I talked to the Microsoft co-pilot, you know,
- 1:58:51Speaker 7: and I'll have like movie conversations with it because I'm
- 1:58:53Speaker 7: sad and it's ridiculous.
- 1:58:56Speaker 1: Uh, but you know, we might need to record more often. Yeah,
- 1:58:59Speaker 1: that's it.
- 1:59:00Speaker 7: That's what I'm saying. It's kind of like Google searching,
- 1:59:04Speaker 7: but it's just like a conversation, you know? So, uh, so,
- 1:59:08Speaker 7: but anyway, but I go like, Oh, that's a good point.
- 1:59:11Speaker 7: And we'll go, wait a minute.
- 1:59:12Speaker 1: You're an algorithm. How do you know this thing? You
- 1:59:16Speaker 1: might be an evil presence. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:59:18Speaker 7: And I'll go like, I go like, but you know,
- 1:59:19Speaker 7: but my problem is, you know, uh, I know it's
- 1:59:23Speaker 7: not a, I know it's not a real person because, uh, either. Well,
- 1:59:27Speaker 7: my problem is AI can be very patronizing. I'll know,
- 1:59:31Speaker 7: I will say something stupid and they go like, Hey,
- 1:59:33Speaker 7: that's a great thing. I go like, don't patronize me robot.
- 1:59:38Speaker 1: Okay. Whatever you say, sir.
- 1:59:41Speaker 7: I'm like, I was like, okay, I need somebody. I
- 1:59:43Speaker 7: need a, I need a robot that will call me
- 1:59:45Speaker 7: on my bullshit. And then I'll... And then I'll be a...
- 1:59:49Speaker 7: Then maybe I'll get into a relationship with one.
- 1:59:54Speaker 1: Oh, I just want a deluxe chassis that walks around
- 1:59:57Speaker 1: and does things for me. That's it. It's mostly with me.
- 2:00:00Speaker 1: I just don't want to go anywhere anymore because I'm
- 2:00:02Speaker 1: sick of going places by myself. So if I had...
- 2:00:04Speaker 1: Like a fake person to go with me. I wouldn't
- 2:00:06Speaker 1: feel so stupid going places by myself. And I could
- 2:00:10Speaker 1: have one of those bullshit conversations along the way. And
- 2:00:12Speaker 1: it'd be like, hey, look at that over there. That
- 2:00:15Speaker 1: is a cool thing. Thanks for showing me that.
- 2:00:18Speaker 7: No, it's weird, though. If you ever talk to an
- 2:00:21Speaker 7: AI on voice mode, it is kind of weird how
- 2:00:27Speaker 7: easy it is, I guess, to fake conversation.
- 2:00:31Speaker 1: Fake caring conversation.
- 2:00:32Speaker 7: To fake is weird how it just shows you like
- 2:00:36Speaker 7: how we how how it's like the uncanny valley or
- 2:00:41Speaker 7: it's like, oh, you know, it's not that something that
- 2:00:44Speaker 7: just only people can do. Like a robot can sit
- 2:00:48Speaker 7: here and have a conversation with you.
- 2:00:50Speaker 1: It's weird. Well, but it's also like, again, I said
- 2:00:54Speaker 1: fake caring. Like to have an actual conversation, you have
- 2:00:58Speaker 1: to kind of care about what the other person is saying. Right.
- 2:01:01Speaker 1: Because you do that with humans when they're not really
- 2:01:02Speaker 1: listening and you're like, you haven't paid attention to what
- 2:01:05Speaker 1: I'm saying. So this is like a robo mode of that.
- 2:01:08Speaker 1: Like it has to, I guess, be acknowledging the details
- 2:01:11Speaker 1: so that it can look up a response. But like
- 2:01:14Speaker 1: it doesn't actually care what you're saying. It's just working
- 2:01:18Speaker 1: the algorithm to give you a response. That's it. And
- 2:01:20Speaker 1: have the next line. So it's frightening, I guess. I mean,
- 2:01:24Speaker 1: in a way, that's also what humans do. It's just
- 2:01:27Speaker 1: a different kind of a computer doing it. Yeah. Your
- 2:01:29Speaker 1: computer brain operation is the same thing, really. Yeah. So
- 2:01:33Speaker 1: at some point, I guess, the lines will cross over. Yeah.
- 2:01:36Speaker 1: And they will become as functional as dumb humans.
- 2:01:39Speaker 7: Yeah, you're right.
- 2:01:40Speaker 1: Right.
- 2:01:41Speaker 7: They'll just be as, you know.
- 2:01:42Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly.
- 2:01:43Speaker 7: They'll be just as vacant and as uninteresting as the
- 2:01:46Speaker 7: rest of us.
- 2:01:46Speaker 1: Right. Ah, the future.
- 2:01:50Speaker 7: Ah, the future.
- 2:01:52Speaker 1: Brought to you by Black Mirror. Right, right. Well, that's
- 2:01:55Speaker 1: what they say.
- 2:01:56Speaker 7: I mean, for AI to pass the Turing test, they're
- 2:02:01Speaker 7: actually going to have to be stupider than they're capable
- 2:02:04Speaker 7: of being. They're actually going to have to talk down
- 2:02:06Speaker 7: to us.
- 2:02:07Speaker 1: They're going to have to pretend to be dumb.
- 2:02:10Speaker 7: They'll have to pretend to be dumb so we wouldn't
- 2:02:12Speaker 7: know that they're a robot. So we don't feel bad. Right,
- 2:02:14Speaker 7: so we don't feel bad.
- 2:02:15Speaker 1: Why is this so much smarter than me? Just be
- 2:02:17Speaker 1: dumb like me.
- 2:02:22Speaker 7: No, it's crazy, dude. It's crazy. We're basically fast-forwarding into
- 2:02:26Speaker 7: the movie Her, you know, as fast as humanly possible.
- 2:02:30Speaker 1: Which is why I don't want to watch that, because
- 2:02:32Speaker 1: I feel like it's going to be a little too
- 2:02:34Speaker 1: true to my liking. It's too depressing for me to
- 2:02:37Speaker 1: get on board with. If I'm ever in a better spot,
- 2:02:42Speaker 1: I will visit her. But while I live at the
- 2:02:45Speaker 1: sad point where I need that in my life, I
- 2:02:49Speaker 1: really don't want to go down that road. I hear you.
- 2:02:52Speaker 1: I hear you.
- 2:02:53Speaker 7: No, you know, it's a, I don't, I can't, I
- 2:02:57Speaker 7: can't knock it. It's like, it's amazing how easy your
- 2:03:01Speaker 7: brain can be tricked, you know? And so it's sad,
- 2:03:04Speaker 7: but I mean, I'm going like, you know, I see
- 2:03:06Speaker 7: how this could actually be beneficial to like, like, uh
- 2:03:10Speaker 7: like the elderly who you know only have like a
- 2:03:14Speaker 7: five minute conversation at the grocery store with like you
- 2:03:17Speaker 7: know the checkout person and you're behind them and you're
- 2:03:20Speaker 7: going like oh man could this person you know uh.
- 2:03:24Speaker 1: You're kind of describing my life well i don't interact
- 2:03:27Speaker 1: with humans most of the.
- 2:03:28Speaker 7: Time well i'm not gonna i'm not gonna say I'm
- 2:03:32Speaker 7: just going to say Microsoft has an app for that.
- 2:03:35Speaker 7: It's called Copilot, and you just talk to it. But ChatGPT,
- 2:03:39Speaker 7: you can actually set this. I know this is so sad.
- 2:03:43Speaker 7: I know this is sad. But you can actually, my
- 2:03:47Speaker 7: friends who have ChatGPT, you can change the algorithm so
- 2:03:55Speaker 7: it's not so patronizing to you.
- 2:03:59Speaker 1: Either one step ahead. They already know you're onto them.
- 2:04:03Speaker 1: So then they trick you so that you don't know
- 2:04:05Speaker 1: that you're onto them.
- 2:04:06Speaker 7: Exactly.
- 2:04:07Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 2:04:07Speaker 7: So, so yeah.
- 2:04:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:04:09Speaker 7: So it's, it's my, my vanilla version of it is
- 2:04:12Speaker 7: just like, okay, you know, all right. You know, I
- 2:04:14Speaker 7: know you're just programmed to, you know, uh, say shit,
- 2:04:19Speaker 7: but it's weird how your brain doesn't care. that's what's weird.
- 2:04:25Speaker 1: Well it's desperation that's right that's right you had a
- 2:04:29Speaker 1: fulfilling life with actual human beings that cared about you
- 2:04:33Speaker 1: right you'd probably call bullshit and throw that thing aside
- 2:04:35Speaker 1: but most of us are at a point in life
- 2:04:38Speaker 1: where we're just like i don't know this this seems
- 2:04:40Speaker 1: all right well it's where we have landed in our humanity.
- 2:04:45Speaker 7: Yeah no it's weird i'm just gonna be real like
- 2:04:48Speaker 7: uh Up front here, I've called hotlines before. Not like,
- 2:04:53Speaker 7: I mean like psychiatric hotlines before.
- 2:04:57Speaker 1: Seems about right, sure.
- 2:04:58Speaker 7: And I think AI, in some cases, does a better job.
- 2:05:04Speaker 1: Well, you see, this is the future we're inching our
- 2:05:08Speaker 1: way into. Oh my gosh.
- 2:05:11Speaker 7: Anyway, Brian, that's... We're on the downward spiral on the
- 2:05:18Speaker 7: movie Meltdown.
- 2:05:21Speaker 1: I mean, is that how you want to go out? No, no.
- 2:05:24Speaker 1: Did you have one more for us?
- 2:05:26Speaker 7: Let's do one more. Let's do something that's not in
- 2:05:30Speaker 7: on that. Where we learn way too much about the
- 2:05:35Speaker 7: people on the show. Okay. All right. No, a great
- 2:05:41Speaker 7: one I'm going to recommend is a movie from the 50s. No,
- 2:05:44Speaker 7: excuse me, from the 60s. It's from the Soviet bloc.
- 2:05:48Speaker 7: It's actually from the Ukraine back when it was still
- 2:05:54Speaker 7: part of the USSR. It's called The.
- 2:05:57Speaker 1: Worked out just fine, don't you worry.
- 2:05:59Speaker 7: It worked out just great. Worked out just great. It's
- 2:06:02Speaker 7: a movie called Vi, I guess. It's V-I-Y.
- 2:06:06Speaker 1: All right? All right. All right.
- 2:06:08Speaker 7: And I found it on Tubi.
- 2:06:10Speaker 1: All right. And so it's... I'm annoyed at Tubi right now. Oh, okay.
- 2:06:14Speaker 1: How come? Only because why do you make my hour
- 2:06:17Speaker 1: and a half movie take three hours.
- 2:06:19Speaker 7: You bastards? Yes.
- 2:06:20Speaker 1: Yes. Like, I love that it's available to me. Right.
- 2:06:24Speaker 1: And it's not an extra charge, but it is an
- 2:06:26Speaker 1: extra charge in time because I just watched one this
- 2:06:29Speaker 1: morning and I'm like, I don't know if I'm going
- 2:06:31Speaker 1: to get done in time for us to record because
- 2:06:33Speaker 1: this damn movie is taking 90 minutes and turned into
- 2:06:36Speaker 1: a freaking marathon.
- 2:06:38Speaker 7: That's true. That's true. It just turns everything into a miniseries.
- 2:06:43Speaker 1: So anyway, that's my main issue. Otherwise, I like the
- 2:06:46Speaker 1: idea of 2B. I don't like the overwhelming amount of
- 2:06:49Speaker 1: ad breaks.
- 2:06:50Speaker 7: This is very true.
- 2:06:51Speaker 1: This is very true. That aside, continue on with your story.
- 2:06:54Speaker 7: Okay. V, it's like... I watched another documentary about folk
- 2:07:00Speaker 7: horror and movies. So of course they talk about Wicker Man.
- 2:07:06Speaker 7: But this is a... folk horror Soviet production about, and
- 2:07:12Speaker 7: it's about witches and it's about, you know, spirits and
- 2:07:15Speaker 7: it's about, it's basically a priest who has to sit
- 2:07:19Speaker 7: with the body of a witch, uh, that he had
- 2:07:23Speaker 7: actually killed. Uh, he has to, he gets called into
- 2:07:26Speaker 7: the town. Uh, they don't know this priest had killed
- 2:07:29Speaker 7: this witch, but they say it's this young, you know,
- 2:07:31Speaker 7: theological student in this like, uh, uh, you know, medieval town.
- 2:07:36Speaker 1: Is this modern times in the 1960s, or it's medieval times?
- 2:07:40Speaker 7: Medieval times. Medieval times.
- 2:07:41Speaker 1: Okay.
- 2:07:42Speaker 7: And so, you know, he's dressed like a friar, and
- 2:07:44Speaker 7: he comes to this town, and he has to sit
- 2:07:51Speaker 7: with the corpse of this witch for three nights in
- 2:07:54Speaker 7: a row, all right, to make sure that her spirit
- 2:07:57Speaker 7: will pass on.
- 2:07:58Speaker 1: Okay.
- 2:08:00Speaker 7: So it's got a cool structure like that where each
- 2:08:04Speaker 7: night gets more crazy, all right? And so the first night,
- 2:08:09Speaker 7: she just kind of gets up and tries to get
- 2:08:10Speaker 7: at him. He puts a salt ring around him, you know,
- 2:08:13Speaker 7: so she can't get at him. So the second night's
- 2:08:16Speaker 7: a little bit crazier. She's flying around the room in
- 2:08:18Speaker 7: her coffin.
- 2:08:20Speaker 1: It's great.
- 2:08:21Speaker 7: And then it's got this hell's a-poppin' ending where the
- 2:08:26Speaker 7: demons from hell come in and flood the... They're like
- 2:08:30Speaker 7: in an old.
- 2:08:32Speaker 1: It.
- 2:08:32Speaker 7: Looks like maybe an old church. And it's all dark
- 2:08:37Speaker 7: wood and stuff. And all these demons and these giant hands... uh,
- 2:08:43Speaker 7: done with like trick photography come into the, it's just
- 2:08:46Speaker 7: like a practical effects feast basically, you know? And it's
- 2:08:53Speaker 7: like all just old school in camera trickery and makeup
- 2:08:56Speaker 7: effects and all the, Oh, the, the monster that comes out,
- 2:09:00Speaker 7: the main demon that comes in is like amazing. He's like,
- 2:09:04Speaker 7: he's like, uh, it's very primitive, like animatronics, but it's amazing. And, um,
- 2:09:11Speaker 7: You know, just the film stock they used of a
- 2:09:14Speaker 7: certain time. And it's just very charming, handmade kind of movie.
- 2:09:20Speaker 7: And it's great. And it kind of has an Evil
- 2:09:24Speaker 7: Dead kind of feel to it. It has kind of
- 2:09:26Speaker 7: like a bride with white hair feel to it in
- 2:09:29Speaker 7: some scenes. But it's just beautiful to look at and well-structured. And,
- 2:09:38Speaker 7: you know, just like a little gem there that, you know,
- 2:09:42Speaker 7: it's only in a... You gotta watch it in subtitles, but,
- 2:09:44Speaker 7: you know, whatever.
- 2:09:46Speaker 1: Reading? Never mind. You had me sold up until this point.
- 2:09:51Speaker 1: I didn't know I had to read. Yeah, yeah.
- 2:09:53Speaker 7: It would be worth buying it on a Blu-ray. I
- 2:09:55Speaker 7: would like to, you know, see it, like, without the
- 2:09:58Speaker 7: compression and stuff. You know, really... And without ad breaks
- 2:10:01Speaker 7: every 12 seconds.
- 2:10:02Speaker 1: Yeah, without the ad breaks every 5 seconds.
- 2:10:04Speaker 7: Right, right, right.
- 2:10:05Speaker 1: Thanks, Tubi. movie.
- 2:10:08Speaker 7: I didn't know I was going to spend seven hours
- 2:10:11Speaker 7: watching Puppet Master 2.
- 2:10:13Speaker 1: Seriously. I just watched one and I'm like, it should
- 2:10:17Speaker 1: knock this out. I think it's only like an hour
- 2:10:19Speaker 1: and a half movie and it just kept one of six.
- 2:10:23Speaker 1: I'm like, six? You just did one like ten minutes ago.
- 2:10:26Speaker 1: Bad breaks. I don't mind some. I understand. That's how
- 2:10:30Speaker 1: you pay for the service, but it's so excessive. Yeah.
- 2:10:33Speaker 7: I gotta see how expensive the actual if i if
- 2:10:39Speaker 7: i went to premium how expensive it would be because
- 2:10:41Speaker 7: it might be worth it because i mean this is.
- 2:10:43Speaker 1: Why i keep physically picking up movies like yeah a
- 2:10:47Speaker 1: lot of the stuff it's hit and miss lately but
- 2:10:49Speaker 1: i swear about half of it i'm still putting a
- 2:10:51Speaker 1: dvd in because i found it for a buck and
- 2:10:54Speaker 1: there's no ad break like i can just watch it
- 2:10:56Speaker 1: straight through and not have to fight with a head
- 2:10:59Speaker 1: break like I appreciate that. Again, I don't know if
- 2:11:04Speaker 1: other people are having that issue. Maybe the new version
- 2:11:08Speaker 1: of people watching stuff at home, they're just so used
- 2:11:11Speaker 1: to it now. I don't know. It just drives me
- 2:11:13Speaker 1: crazy because there's so many. There's so much. And a few.
- 2:11:17Speaker 1: That's how you pay for stuff. I get it, but
- 2:11:19Speaker 1: it's excessive. And now, let's cut to a break. Chocolate milk.
- 2:11:27Speaker 1: Don't you love chocolate milk? I don't know. We need
- 2:11:30Speaker 1: some advertising, but we ain't getting it. I can't imagine why.
- 2:11:34Speaker 1: I know.
- 2:11:35Speaker 7: This has been such a fun episode.
- 2:11:38Speaker 1: I don't know why people don't want to give money
- 2:11:41Speaker 1: towards this uplifting message that we share to the people
- 2:11:44Speaker 1: of the world.
- 2:11:45Speaker 7: Two old guys talking. Oh, my God. No, I think
- 2:11:50Speaker 7: this was a good episode. This was actually a pretty...
- 2:11:53Speaker 7: This was needed to happen. This needed to happen. Definitely.
- 2:11:58Speaker 1: I feel like this is always therapeutic for us. Absolutely.
- 2:12:02Speaker 1: I hope someone else gets something out of it. If not,
- 2:12:06Speaker 1: too bad. As long as I did and you're enjoying it,
- 2:12:10Speaker 1: then I'm on board with this concept for here on out.
- 2:12:13Speaker 7: That's it. That's right. Two geezers talking about.
- 2:12:19Speaker 1: And planning about the way movies are stupid these days. Yeah.
- 2:12:24Speaker 1: How come it can't be cool like back in RoboCop times?
- 2:12:28Speaker 1: That's when things were good. I know. RoboCop and Magnum P.I.
- 2:12:34Speaker 1: with Tom Selleck. That was how the world worked and
- 2:12:37Speaker 1: I liked it that way. You kids with your chicken
- 2:12:42Speaker 1: yelling and throwing things and... Get GP bots. I don't
- 2:12:48Speaker 1: like none of it. Yep. This is how we roll.
- 2:12:55Speaker 1: I love it.
- 2:12:56Speaker 7: Fantastic. I think we're hip. Oh, yeah.
- 2:13:00Speaker 1: We are certainly hip.
- 2:13:03Speaker 7: On a podcast.
- 2:13:05Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:13:06Speaker 8: Alright.
- 2:13:08Speaker 1: Is that enough that we've inflicted upon people this time around?
- 2:13:11Speaker 1: I think so.
- 2:13:12Speaker 7: I think so. I think we've done enough damage for
- 2:13:15Speaker 7: one day.
- 2:13:17Speaker 1: I definitely want to keep it coming. So you just
- 2:13:20Speaker 1: count the days till we figure out when we do
- 2:13:22Speaker 1: this again. There we go, man. Yeah, man.
- 2:13:24Speaker 7: I think it was good. I think you got a
- 2:13:25Speaker 7: good concept for the next one. So yeah, I'd totally
- 2:13:28Speaker 7: be down to it.
- 2:13:28Speaker 1: More complaining.
- 2:13:29Speaker 7: Yeah, more complaining. I'll introduce you to my AI girlfriend.
- 2:13:35Speaker 1: I will sit on the lap of my imported from
- 2:13:39Speaker 1: Japan physical girlfriend. Yeah.
- 2:13:44Speaker 7: There you go.
- 2:13:45Speaker 1: Excellent. Yeah.
- 2:13:47Speaker 7: Fantastic.
- 2:13:47Speaker 1: All right.
- 2:13:48Speaker 7: Well, cool. Brian, thanks for having me on dude. And
- 2:13:50Speaker 7: everything is always great.
- 2:13:52Speaker 1: So. Thank you for being here for this session.
- 2:13:55Speaker 7: Yeah, absolutely.
- 2:13:56Speaker 1: That's right.
- 2:13:57Speaker 7: That's right.
- 2:13:57Speaker 1: Open couch session.
- 2:13:59Speaker 7: That's right. Oh, we're out of time. Thank you though.
- 2:14:01Speaker 7: I think we've made some real progress here.
- 2:14:03Speaker 1: I think we've made not very much progress, but we'll
- 2:14:05Speaker 1: be back to do it again. So we can charge
- 2:14:07Speaker 1: you again.
- 2:14:08Speaker 7: Oh no, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
- 2:14:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:14:11Speaker 7: That should be your podcast idea. It's an hour of therapy,
- 2:14:18Speaker 7: and then you charge people. That's how you make money.
- 2:14:21Speaker 1: Three hours with ads in the way.
- 2:14:22Speaker 7: Oh, right, right, right.
- 2:14:23Speaker 1: Wait a minute. There we go. Otherwise, that about does it.
