- 1:19So welcome, everyone, to the ever-popular Inspirations
- 1:22for Your Life show.
- 1:24I'm John C.
- 1:25Morley.
- 1:25I'm a serial entrepreneur.
- 1:26I'm an engineer, marketing specialist, video producer, podcast
- 1:29host, coach, keynote speaker, passionate lifelong learner, and
- 1:34yes, a graduate student at Montgomery State University
- 1:36and so grateful now to be a published
- 1:38author.
- 1:39It is great to be an author.
- 1:40So our master topic this week is momentum
- 1:43changes everything, and it really does.
- 1:45And today, I'm talking about something that quietly
- 1:50destroys momentum before it ever has a chance
- 1:53to breathe and grow.
- 1:55Perfect conditions are why you're still stuck today.
- 1:59How many times have you told yourself, I'll
- 2:01start when things settle down.
- 2:03I'll start when I have more time.
- 2:06I'll start when I have more money.
- 2:09I'll start when I have the right equipment.
- 2:12I'll start when I feel more confident.
- 2:14I'll start when everything finally lines up.
- 2:20But here's the problem with all that.
- 2:23Perfect conditions rarely arrive on schedule, unfortunately.
- 2:29Life doesn't send you an invitation saying, hey,
- 2:33John, everything is finally perfect.
- 2:35You may begin your journey.
- 2:36That's not how it works.
- 2:39It doesn't work like that.
- 2:41Something will almost always be inconvenient, uncertain, unfinished,
- 2:45or outside of your control.
- 2:47That's life.
- 2:48That means progress has to coexist with imperfect
- 2:51circumstances, something a lot of people don't like.
- 2:55If your progress depends upon everything around you
- 2:59being perfect, you have handed control of your
- 3:04future to circumstances.
- 3:06Stop requiring everything to feel right before beginning.
- 3:10Sometimes you're going to be nervous.
- 3:15Sometimes you're going to be tired.
- 3:18Sometimes you won't know exactly what's happening next.
- 3:22Go ahead and begin anyway.
- 3:24Use what is available now.
- 3:28And the thing I think we need to
- 3:29understand with that is we spend enormous amounts
- 3:31of time thinking about what we don't have.
- 3:34The better question is, what do I have
- 3:37and what can I do with it right
- 3:39now?
- 3:39Because, you see, resourcefulness can matter more than
- 3:43ideal resources.
- 3:46Someone with every tool imaginable but no willingness
- 3:49to act can accomplish less than somebody who
- 3:53takes limited resources and asks, how can I
- 3:57make this work, okay?
- 3:59Your environment doesn't have to be perfect, guys,
- 4:02for you to improve.
- 4:03Maybe your office isn't perfect.
- 4:04Maybe your schedule is crowded.
- 4:06Maybe people around you don't understand what you're
- 4:08really building.
- 4:10Build it anyway.
- 4:14You can still take a step.
- 4:17And remember this, a messy beginning can still
- 4:21produce an excellent result, right?
- 4:24When we have a messy recipe, we start,
- 4:27we still get a very delicious cake or
- 4:28cupcake at the end if we make some
- 4:31doctrine to the recipe, right?
- 4:33People love seeing polished outcomes.
- 4:36They rarely see the awkward first draft, the
- 4:40rough first recording, the first attempt that didn't
- 4:43work, or the idea that had to go
- 4:46through many refinements as it was changed several
- 4:49times.
- 4:51Great outcomes can have very impressive beginnings.
- 4:56It can.
- 4:57Learn to operate before every variable is controlled.
- 5:01As an engineer, I understand the desire to
- 5:04know the variables.
- 5:06We want predictability.
- 5:07We want systems to behave the way we
- 5:10expect them to.
- 5:10But life, guys, isn't controlled in a laboratory.
- 5:15At some point, you have to move with
- 5:17incomplete information.
- 5:19That's why adaptability keeps progress alive.
- 5:23The person who can adjust has enormous advantage
- 5:26over the person who requires everything to follow
- 5:29the original plan.
- 5:32For a moment, let's presume that we're replacing
- 5:36the perfect timing with useful timing.
- 5:38Ask yourself this question.
- 5:41Is this moment good enough for me to
- 5:44make meaningful progress?
- 5:45If the answer is yes, move forward and
- 5:48stop giving those minor obstacles major authority over
- 5:51your life to shut you down.
- 5:53A small inconvenience should not get the power
- 5:56to cancel an important goal or revert your
- 6:00decision.
- 6:04But this happens to so many people every
- 6:06day.
- 6:08One frustrating morning does not need to destroy
- 6:11your day.
- 6:12One delay does not need to destroy your
- 6:15week.
- 6:16One setback does not need to destroy your
- 6:19entire plan.
- 6:21Identify what is truly necessary to begin.
- 6:28Maybe you need certain information.
- 6:32Maybe you need a specific tool.
- 6:33Maybe you need someone's approval.
- 6:36Fine.
- 6:37But please be careful because we often confuse
- 6:41what we prefer with what we require.
- 6:45And that shuts down our productivity.
- 6:48Separate preferences from requirements.
- 6:51And I want to compare this to something
- 6:53we have in software engineering.
- 6:55You know, when we're doing what we call
- 6:57a requirement solicitation or a requirements gathering, that's
- 6:59the very first step when we figure out
- 7:02what we need to do to do the
- 7:03project so we can give them a proper
- 7:05estimate and timeline.
- 7:08And I think what really comes clear with
- 7:12this is that a lot of times people
- 7:15will give you wants, but those aren't necessarily
- 7:21needs.
- 7:22What needs are are the things that are
- 7:24required to make the program work.
- 7:26Wants are nice, but they're not what's needed
- 7:28to get the program off the ground.
- 7:30So I would like this is very different
- 7:33from I cannot begin without this.
- 7:39Client tells us they want an e-commerce
- 7:41system.
- 7:41We write it.
- 7:43But then they tell us that, well, they
- 7:45want every item to be, let's say, 100
- 7:49levels deep.
- 7:49Do they need that now?
- 7:52No.
- 7:53They want it.
- 7:54They may not need it for 5 or
- 7:5510 years, and then they may never need
- 7:57it.
- 7:58So it's our job when we go through.
- 7:59We call the requirements analysis phase to get
- 8:03rid of ambiguities, to get rid of things
- 8:06that are not clear, make them clear, making
- 8:10sure everything just has one meaning, making sure
- 8:15there's terms that are not going to confuse
- 8:18things later.
- 8:19So that's a big distinction.
- 8:21And a distinction one can get from months
- 8:26of unnecessary waiting.
- 8:28Yeah, and of course, a lot of frustration.
- 8:31Make version one before demanding version 10.
- 8:34Can you do that for me?
- 8:36I know we want version 10.
- 8:37Let's start with version one.
- 8:39This is huge.
- 8:40You cannot improve something that exists only in
- 8:42your imagination.
- 8:43Create the rough draft.
- 8:45Record the first episode.
- 8:47Build the prototype.
- 8:48Start the project.
- 8:49Take the first step.
- 8:51Give improvements somewhere to start.
- 8:57Version one doesn't have to be pretty, OK?
- 9:00Doesn't have to prove how talented you are.
- 9:03Its job is to exist so versions two
- 9:06and beyond can become even better than version
- 9:09one.
- 9:11And something interesting happens when you begin.
- 9:15Conditions change after action begins.
- 9:17You meet somebody.
- 9:19You learn something.
- 9:21You discover a resource.
- 9:23You recognize an opportunity.
- 9:26You find a better approach.
- 9:31Things that were invisible while you were standing
- 9:33still become visible because you started moving again.
- 9:38Opportunities can appear because you move.
- 9:43We often imagine that opportunity arrives first, and
- 9:47then action follows right after.
- 9:49Sometimes it works in the opposite direction.
- 9:52You take action, and that action puts you
- 9:55in position to encounter the opportunity.
- 9:59And remember, guys, waiting also produces consequences.
- 10:05Doing nothing isn't neutral.
- 10:08I know you think, well, if I don't
- 10:09do anything, I'll be fine.
- 10:11Not necessarily.
- 10:12And that's something a lot of people miss.
- 10:14They miss that whole concept, right?
- 10:19They miss that whole entire concept.
- 10:22So while you're waiting, time is moving.
- 10:25Opportunities are changing.
- 10:28Other people are learning.
- 10:29Technology is evolving.
- 10:31Your own enthusiasm can fade.
- 10:34So make progress with today's resources, not the
- 10:37resources you hope to have six months from
- 10:41now, not the schedule you wish you had,
- 10:44not the imaginary circumstances you're waiting for.
- 10:47What can you do today?
- 10:49You don't underestimate what limitations can do for
- 10:55you.
- 10:56Creativity grows when resources are limited.
- 11:01And I think that's a hard one for
- 11:02a lot of people to wrap their heads
- 11:06around, right?
- 11:07I think that's a very hard one to
- 11:09really understand.
- 11:13So when you can't solve something with unlimited
- 11:16money, unlimited time, or unlimited help, you're forced
- 11:20to think differently.
- 11:21You ask better questions.
- 11:23You improvise.
- 11:25You simplify things.
- 11:27You discover possibilities you might never have considered
- 11:30otherwise.
- 11:32I think that's a very important thing, guys,
- 11:36right?
- 11:37But I'm not going to tell you that
- 11:38it's simple because it's not.
- 11:42Imperfect action can reveal better solutions.
- 11:45That's another reason action beats endless speculation.
- 11:51You can sit right there imagining what might
- 11:56work, or you can try something reasonable and
- 12:01get actual feedback out.
- 12:04These are not hard things, but many people
- 12:06don't get off the bench to even try
- 12:08this.
- 12:13Good water.
- 12:14So real feedback gives you something useful to
- 12:17improve.
- 12:19And please stop treating inconvenience as impossibilities.
- 12:24It's not.
- 12:25Something being harder than you hoped does not
- 12:28mean it cannot be done ever.
- 12:31Something takes longer does not mean it cannot
- 12:33be done.
- 12:34Something requiring a little adjustment does not mean
- 12:37it cannot be done.
- 12:38Learn how to move around obstacles.
- 12:41If one route is blocked, ask whether another
- 12:44route exists.
- 12:45If your original method isn't working, well, go
- 12:49ahead and change the method.
- 12:51Change the plan without abandoning the destination.
- 12:56When you're on a trip and you're trying
- 12:59to go somewhere and there's all this traffic,
- 13:01do you change where you're going to?
- 13:03No, you just change the route of how
- 13:06to get there.
- 13:09That's actually the plan.
- 13:12That distinction matters quite a bit.
- 13:16Changing your approach isn't necessarily quitting.
- 13:19Sometimes changing your approach is exactly what commitment
- 13:22requires.
- 13:24You remain committed to the outcome while staying
- 13:27flexible about how you reach it.
- 13:30And progress does not require a flawless day.
- 13:33Maybe today didn't go perfectly.
- 13:37You woke up late.
- 13:38A meeting ran a little over.
- 13:43Something broke.
- 13:45Somebody interrupted you.
- 13:49Fine.
- 13:50Can you still make one meaningful move?
- 13:53Sure you can.
- 13:54If you can, the day doesn't have to
- 13:58be lost.
- 14:00I think that's a very important thing to
- 14:04understand that the day does not have to
- 14:06be lost.
- 14:15But a lot of people don't get that
- 14:20because they get confused about what's going on
- 14:22in their lives.
- 14:25And not that they can't change, but they
- 14:28feel they're never gonna change.
- 14:31That can be hard for a lot of
- 14:33people.
- 14:38And difficult circumstances can actually strengthen our adaptability.
- 14:42I'm not saying it's gonna be easy.
- 14:44Every time you learn to keep moving when
- 14:46things aren't perfect, you become more capable of
- 14:49handling the next challenge.
- 14:51Now, how about when it relies on people?
- 14:55Sometimes I know people say, oh yeah, I'm
- 14:56gonna do this.
- 14:57I'm gonna stop by.
- 14:58I'm gonna do this or do that.
- 15:00Then they fall through.
- 15:02They don't do it.
- 15:06And what do they usually do?
- 15:07They hide.
- 15:08Because they're embarrassed that they didn't keep their
- 15:12end of the bargain.
- 15:14You become someone who knows how to respond.
- 15:18Work with reality instead of arguing with it.
- 15:22That's a real prize.
- 15:25This one matters a lot, guys, because we
- 15:27can waste incredible amounts of energy and money
- 15:30wishing today were different.
- 15:32I wish this hadn't happened.
- 15:34I wish I had more time.
- 15:36I wish that person had responded.
- 15:37I wish circumstances were easier.
- 15:39Maybe all of that is true.
- 15:43But what is really going on right now?
- 15:46And I think we all have this tendency
- 15:48to say, gee, you know what?
- 15:49Let me go back and think about all
- 15:51the things that are wrong.
- 15:52That's not gonna help you guys.
- 15:55It's not gonna help you.
- 15:57It's gonna frustrate you an awful lot, right?
- 16:01Gonna frustrate you an awful lot.
- 16:03So that's something I think a lot of
- 16:05people just don't realize.
- 16:07They don't realize what's going on or why
- 16:11something's going on.
- 16:16I think a lot of times, guys, people
- 16:19out there just, they get annoyed because something
- 16:25didn't work the right way.
- 16:31It didn't work the right way.
- 16:35Well, that's a problem, guys.
- 16:36That's a very, very big problem, a huge,
- 16:43huge problem, but one that can still be
- 16:47addressed.
- 17:01I think this rubs people different ways, the
- 17:08I wish mentality.
- 17:10But what is really going on right now
- 17:12in your head?
- 17:14What's concrete?
- 17:15Why don't we start there instead of trying
- 17:17to do all this wish around?
- 17:19Your next move matters more than the ideal
- 17:21circumstances.
- 17:21So it's not your imagery.
- 17:25Move next month.
- 17:27Not what you would do if everything were
- 17:29perfect today.
- 17:31What is the next useful thing you can
- 17:33do with the reality you have now?
- 17:36Because that's how you create momentum where you
- 17:39are presently.
- 17:42Not when you wish you were here now.
- 17:46Not where somebody else is.
- 17:49Right where you are now, presently.
- 17:53And that brings us to another idea.
- 17:59I want you to carry with you today
- 18:01this concept.
- 18:04Build with what you have and improve as
- 18:08you go.
- 18:10Maybe you're starting to build something a certain
- 18:12way, but then suddenly it changes.
- 18:17It changes because of how we are, our
- 18:21perceptions.
- 18:23And that's a huge, huge thing.
- 18:33I think sometimes people just don't really, they
- 18:36don't really get it.
- 18:39And the reason they don't get it is
- 18:44because of a slight judgment shift.
- 18:50A perception that changes, not just where they
- 18:55are right now, but where they're gonna go
- 18:57in the next 30, 60 or 90 days.
- 19:02Build with what you have and improve as
- 19:05you go.
- 19:06You may not have the perfect tools.
- 19:09You may not have the perfect venue.
- 19:14You may not have the perfect attendance, but
- 19:20know where you are right now.
- 19:22You don't need to see the finished masterpiece
- 19:25before you place the first piece.
- 19:30It's nice, but you can still build without
- 19:35seeing it completed.
- 19:38I think that's an important piece for all
- 19:40of us right here.
- 19:44All of us right at this very, very
- 19:47moment.
- 19:49Meaning something that a lot of us don't
- 19:52really understand.
- 19:54And I'm gonna say to you guys this
- 19:56really importantly.
- 20:00You don't need perfect confidence.
- 20:04You don't need unlimited resources.
- 20:07You don't need every answer in your head.
- 20:10You need enough to make the next move.
- 20:13Enough information so you could make the decision
- 20:16to make the next choice.
- 20:17Then another, then another, right?
- 20:19You just kind of hop around, but you
- 20:21don't need to get to the end right
- 20:22away.
- 20:23There's hops.
- 20:24Think of it like this.
- 20:26When you go to a website, okay?
- 20:29You never get there just directly.
- 20:31It usually has five, 10, 15, 20 or
- 20:33more hops.
- 20:34And it goes to different servers without getting
- 20:36all the technical jargon on it.
- 20:39But it has to go from one to
- 20:41one to one before it gets to the
- 20:42end.
- 20:43We need to go through a bunch of
- 20:46steps too.
- 20:48It's nice to get right to the end,
- 20:50but we don't have a direct flight because
- 20:54we're learning along the way.
- 20:56This, ladies and gentlemen, is how we actually
- 20:59start to build momentum.
- 21:02It's not fast.
- 21:06And once momentum starts to catch fire, something
- 21:13happens, a change results.
- 21:17Now, ladies and gentlemen, you're no longer waiting
- 21:18for conditions to give you permissions.
- 21:21I hope not.
- 21:22You're actively shaping the conditions around you right
- 21:26now.
- 21:27So today, identify one thing you've been postponing
- 21:31because circumstances aren't perfect in your life.
- 21:34Then ask yourself this question.
- 21:37What do I truly need to begin?
- 21:39What am I merely wishing I had?
- 21:42And what useful action can I take today
- 21:45in the present?
- 21:48I didn't say tomorrow.
- 21:49I said today.
- 21:51Take that action.
- 21:54Take it.
- 21:55It might be scary.
- 21:56Take it.
- 21:59Go ahead and create version one.
- 22:04Work around the obstacles that you have.
- 22:07Adjust the plan the best you can and
- 22:10use what you have now, resources, people, right?
- 22:15Because you see, perfect conditions may never arrive
- 22:19in your life, but your opportunity to create
- 22:22momentum, it's here right now.
- 22:27You know, a wise person once said, you
- 22:29know, we have to wait until the iron
- 22:32is hot until we can strike it.
- 22:37Then someone else said, no, let's strike to
- 22:41get the iron hot.
- 22:44Someone else said, you know, wait till your
- 22:47ship comes in to get on it.
- 22:50Another wise person said, don't wait, swim out
- 22:53to your ship.
- 22:54It's out there.
- 22:55Go get it.
- 22:58People can be lazy.
- 23:00Work around the obstacles.
- 23:03Your opportunity, your invitation to create momentum, it's
- 23:06here right now today.
- 23:08Remember guys, momentum changes everything, but you might
- 23:13get frustrated.
- 23:13She was like, oh, John, I did this
- 23:15and nothing happened.
- 23:16My question is, how long have you been
- 23:17doing?
- 23:18Oh, 30 minutes.
- 23:21But you've been focusing on the wrong path
- 23:24for years.
- 23:26It's not gonna change overnight, guys.
- 23:29Not gonna change overnight.
- 23:32I think that still hurts a lot of
- 23:34people because they're like, I don't understand like
- 23:36how that even works.
- 23:38Baby step, consistency.
- 23:41That's how it works, guys.
- 23:42Baby steps, consistency.
- 23:49Baby steps, consistency.
- 23:54That's key, guys.
- 23:56That is really key.
- 23:58That's not some magic.
- 24:05It's an invitation, inviting you to take the

- 24:10The step that you can go onto a
- 24:14journey and become successful.
- 24:16Remember, success is never finished.
- 24:19You keep refining.
- 24:20I wrote a book.
- 24:21As you guys know, I wrote Drain the
- 24:23Driven.
- 24:23All right, this book here.
- 24:25I'm working on another book.
- 24:28It wasn't perfect when I started writing it.
- 24:30There were many times I had to go
- 24:32back and refine it and review it before
- 24:34we could publish it.
- 24:38Don't be afraid to start because you're worried

- 24:48Ladies and gentlemen, if you don't know who

- 25:00Keynote speaker, graduate student at Montclair University, passionate
- 25:03lifelong learner, and an author.
- 25:06And I can tell you, life is fascinating.
- 25:12The fact that you can get up every
- 25:13morning and be a creator and do whatever
- 25:17you wanna do.
- 25:19I know that scares a lot of people

- 25:56Well, I want you to realize that you

- 26:16Why?
- 26:18Because nothing ever gets accomplished when you're just
- 26:21standing still.
- 26:22I'm gonna give you a perfect example, atrophy.
- 26:26You guys know I broke my tip and
- 26:28fib a while ago.
- 26:28So what causes atrophy when you, let's say,
- 26:36break a leg?
- 26:38What causes atrophy?
- 26:45It's loss of mechanical load.
- 26:48Muscles need regular movement to keep working.
- 26:51When they stop, it's like you forget how
- 26:54to lift.
- 26:55The muscles forget.
- 26:57Without active muscle contractions to act as a
- 26:59pump, circulation through the immobilized limb decreases, which
- 27:05adds to stiffness, and unfortunately, guys, swelling.
- 27:08Unfortunately.
- 27:11Keep adapting like a chameleon, like the army
- 27:16that wears these uniforms, or even these animals

- 27:23Keep improving.
- 27:24I know it's not easy, but you guys

- 27:27And most importantly, all right, please don't wait
- 27:32for perfect conditions to become the person you
- 27:37already know you can be.
- 27:40See, I think what that really does is
- 27:43it gives an excuse to procrastinate every day.
