- 1:23air date November the seventeenth, nineteen forty seven. The title The Case of
- 1:29the Bearded Queen. Okay, you've just go the mystery all the doctor do
- 1:34now catch the killer? But how do we do that by turning you into
- 1:38a ghost, by turning me into a lot. That's three I'm going to
- 1:42make you up into the scariest dose that I've ever seen. And tonight you're
- 1:45going to haunt a chess club now also the case of the dual Grease.
- 1:53Today's adventure starring long Nick Carter, brought you by a new pulp war all
- 2:00that splendor in his small basement apartment, cut it with chess books and chestnuts.
- 2:06Old Jeremy Hawthorn sits over a test board and listens absently while two hot
- 2:10eyed men talk to him. Well, yall listen to me Hawthorn man.
- 2:14Oh yes, yes, of course he god his name twice already, pals,
- 2:21here's my boss, mister month. Oh yeah, yes, where If
- 2:27you don't pay attention, I'll do cluse. Okay, yes, Bishop to
- 2:32Queen, the only possible move unless nights. When I got a thousand dollars
- 2:43for you, a thousand dollars, then welcome up. You remember the old
- 2:49National Test Club, the old marble mansion on these twentieth air Oh yes,
- 2:53doing, I'm the last surviving member. Ah, what great dude is we
- 3:00added the club. It's been closed now for let me see, forty years,
- 3:05and it's been falling to pieces all that time. Yeah, that's right.
- 3:09If it hasn't been with that terrible scandal, the club would skill me.
- 3:14I'm not interested in the club or at scandals. I'm interested in you.
- 3:17Oh oh, you're just paying No, No, I'm the guy with
- 3:23a thousand bucks. I'll pay it to you. That for what? For
- 3:27your right title and interest in the club. My dear sir, you're cheating
- 3:32yourself. There isn't anything in the club but old books, no furniture,
- 3:38hardly worth fifty dollars alone. I'll pay you one thousand dollars for everything in
- 3:43the building. Everything that grew a properly is the last surviving member. All
- 3:46you have to do is time a three link mission. My this is ridiculous.
- 3:51The pace is a liabilite. It may be so hot one you just
- 3:54signed the paper and take this thousand dollars. I'll take the liability. Oh
- 4:11why the way, Patsy, I haven't asked you to marry me for over
- 4:15two weeks. Oh please God, they don't. You have to get tired
- 4:18of hearing me say no, Yade, drop the car quick, sho me.
- 4:25I just remembered something murder, the murders and thrown in and it's nothing
- 4:31like that. I just remembered old Man Hawthorn. Hawthorn, Yeah, he
- 4:35lives right here. That's based the apartment. Scuffy. Who what then?
- 4:40Why is old Man Hawthorn? He's a guy I played chess with by Mayra.
- 4:44Oh oh no, I've heard everything. I'm not kidding, Patsy.
- 4:48I'm up to my neck in a red hot correspondence game with Haplin. I
- 4:53just remembered I forgot the mail of my latest move. Okay, you get
- 4:56back in the concast, Champion. We're late for dinner already. I'll end
- 4:58you a postcard. It's probably sling open the door and howl chest and spear.
- 5:06Old man who's onto dead? Oh that's sasy. Did I ever tell
- 5:15you the story about the man who won a chess game because he couldn't talk
- 5:18Cannibals? Another Nick Kurtis special on the way. It seems this man was
- 5:25captured by cannibals down a New Gummack and while they were boiling the pot.
- 5:30Scrubby, what's the matter with him? It doesn't sound as though he's making
- 5:33a chess movie. Hey, next, you gotta come in Alice place right
- 5:36away. This is awful. What's the matter of Scrubby? Need advice on
- 5:41your next move, How'll say I do half instead? He's committed suicide,
- 5:57Yeah, no doubt about it. Haf On dead all right. He climbed
- 6:02up on a chair and hanged himself from one of the water pipes. Why
- 6:05Kevy says he didn't have a problem in the world, not outside of chess,
- 6:10so he just lived for his chest problems. The old guy was happy.
- 6:14He was bothering me. Hush, look at this note hawk On apparently
- 6:19left here on the chess table, neatly printed an inch I made years old,
- 6:26and I'm tired. Chess is a boy. There's nothing less. Why
- 6:30did you say? Hawsthorn apparently left the note? Becus a note that's printed
- 6:34an ink? So what Hawford's got an eat stain on his forefingers? Through
- 6:39enough to Chevy, But tell me this, where's the ink bottle? The
- 6:42what? The bottle of ink? And the pen? Hawf On yous or
- 6:45the fountain pill or anything that will write an ink? Holy smoke, you're
- 6:47right. I've been through this room thoroughly and there isn't any ink the house
- 6:53at Hawthorn writes that note. Maybe there's a pen in his pocket. Oh
- 6:56no, I've searched him. There's nothing on it but the small change in
- 6:59a handkerchiefs. And he didn't write that note, now, Stubby, he
- 7:01positively did not. Some kind friend obligingly wrote that note for Hawthorn with his
- 7:06own pen and then kindly helped Hawthorn commit suicide. Do you mean that someone
- 7:13murdered him? Go to the head of the class factor. Oh, he
- 7:15was harmless. Why would anyone want to kill a nice old man like that?
- 7:19That scubby is what I'd like to find out, So would I Where
- 7:23do we start? Well, here's the picture as I see. You know,
- 7:28someone was here with Hawforn just before he was murdered, someone who had
- 7:31the pen that Hawthorn used to write with, accounting for the ink stain on
- 7:34a finger. Right, but what his Hawkhorn right of? Certainly not the
- 7:38suicide note that was written for him after he was killed. Now when that's
- 7:43some But they're on the floor on the Hawthorne speak rhyme stone medallions. See
- 7:55the letter M in the center. A medallion was a letter recognized the scubbish,
- 8:00I do. That's from the club Monks like club on the west side.
- 8:03Yeah, there's a dancer there named Jenny Valentine. He does a solo
- 8:05tap dance and froze the souvenirs to the customer. Hole. What would an
- 8:09old chess player be doing in a nightclub catching souvenirs? You mean, what
- 8:13would a nightclub dancer be doing in Hawthorne's room playing chess? Maybe that medallion
- 8:18is the key to this murder. Hey, look, you could stand by
- 8:24and wait for Maddie in the homicide squat. Huh, Well, what are
- 8:26you going to do? I'm going down to the Monk Club. I'm trying
- 8:30to catch a souvenir. I can't do you anything but live. Oh?
- 9:05Hi, money is it? Okay? Mister month? Is what? Okay?
- 9:13Well? The money I owe you? The five grams? Oh no,
- 9:16I told you how to get the queen. Didn't you believe me?
- 9:20Yeah? Well did you see how hole? Did you buy it for him?
- 9:24Yeah? You owe the club six thousand? Now what do you mean?
- 9:28Now? Listen it's Tony, Yeah, come here to that club and
- 9:31you have dropped five grands you can't pay. So you had the story about
- 9:35this. This is the quest your uncle leftter the Chess club. It's true.
- 9:39I swear the club was closed before they had a chance to find out
- 9:43what he gave me. I never knew what they had, mister monk.
- 9:46That queen is worth twenty thousand dollars maybe thirty. Oh well that was the
- 9:54If I fear you into it, you'd cancel the money I owe you.
- 9:56Lessons puts the word worth. It's what you said. I haven't got that
- 10:01queen yet. It cost me another grand already. If I get it,
- 10:05you're clear. Get that through your head, Hopkins. I don't sucker so
- 10:09weeky for fancy story, but that's all I want yelling? Will you?
- 10:16Everybody in the clubs can hear you? You're making so much noise? Oh
- 10:20Jenny, oh happy? Hello? Oh no, No, that's a man
- 10:31for you. Jason ast to me for three months dollars and all of us
- 10:35sudden bump suffering. Don't be mad at me, Hopey, you played me
- 10:43for a sucker, Jenny, five thousand dollars worth a sucker. Ye,
- 10:48I'm going to the far see you here, mona, ye, get the
- 11:01dope and haul them. Everything's okay and we get to see the night sat
- 11:09going over with crews. Are you gonna you take care? You just say
- 11:16that some from tomorrow one that's going to do you lead? And forty brandt
- 11:26a breath now whose naked ideas there? Say it again that you mean month
- 11:35you and me? And forty to oh, I mean you stay the sweetest
- 11:45thing I dressing room now, it's like I'm taking the fa hope I don't
- 12:16have to say. Sure what we do with her dad? Huh mm hmmm
- 12:35Valentine. Yeah, the dormond told maybe you all right to wait and you're
- 12:41resting? Hm hm hm you shall we say, uh you admire? Perhaps
- 12:54get away? Mmmm, very good luck to me? Well night. Then
- 13:03I haven't seen it, so I wouldn't know. And what are you hanging
- 13:05around my dressing room for, Mis Valentine? I am Nick Carter. That's
- 13:11right now, get out of here. I'm not quite ready to leave yet,
- 13:16Miss Valentix. I'd like to ask you about this medallion? What about
- 13:24it? Why did you give it to Jeremy Hawthorn. Jeremy hey, hey,
- 13:28look, I got hundreds of those things around every nine, but I
- 13:33just you know who catches them, of course, Ms Valentix, But you
- 13:37do know Hawthorn. M I showed it on your face when I mentioned his
- 13:41name. Get out of here, I came up here to ask you what
- 13:46you know about a chess player who has the misfortune mant Carter. I'll ask
- 13:52the questions around here. Oh hello, mom, Do I also say hello
- 13:56to the forty five? You're playing with fancy plate cutter. You can get
- 14:01into it with a don't you enough when you sneak in the dressing room?
- 14:05No, besides you and I are gonna swoop right now. This is my
- 14:11place, Jenny, let me take it. Okay, okay, but n't
- 14:13get on your feet. Cut it. We're going up to my office.
- 14:16All right. It's nice to sand proves up there. You can play just
- 14:22as us as you want to. And if you want to play some toiler
- 14:26games, that's all right too. Just one game. I'm not in the
- 14:30mood for him. Up. Oh, it's that two men play with a
- 14:33gun or a rope. It's called murder. Oh. Nick was writing his
- 14:45guests, but Hawkorn was known to both Jenny and Monk. Okay where that
- 14:48leads. And in just a moment, when we hear what Monk has to
- 14:52tell him in his private sound proof office, all back to the case of
- 15:01the Due Old Queen. Today's adventure with Nick Carter bought you by you full
- 15:05four all that splendor. At the point of a gun. Nick is ushered
- 15:11into Monk's soundproof office on the second floor of the Monk Club. Monk closer,
- 15:15the door sharply and the term card. Thanks now, listen, I
- 15:20had trouble with you before. I know you're a smart cookie, and I
- 15:24know you're dangerous. That's why I use a rod when you're around. Put
- 15:28your cars in a table, Monk card. This is one deal that's on
- 15:33the levels. What deal the deal with hawkun? Oh? Well, this
- 15:41is very interesting. Go ahead, Monk sang your song. Well, a
- 15:46rich kid named Hopkin's gotten a red forenty for five grams, so so couldn't
- 15:52pay, and so his old man wouldn't hand over the dough. So Hopkins
- 15:56steers me into a deal of squid deal. He going for history, and
- 16:03I've read a book or two. We'll get a load of this. Back
- 16:06in the fifteen hundreds, there was this English queen Elizabeth. I've heard of
- 16:11her. Oh no, there was a tournament held in Rana once to kind
- 16:14of joust. Now, Elizabeth was impressed with a way a guy by the
- 16:18name of Sir Charles Blunt spot He was so impressed that he sent him a
- 16:22present the next day, a chess tea. It was a jewel queen.
- 16:27And I think I've read the story well now. According to the book,
- 16:32Essex was so jealous of they gift, he had some fights, a duel
- 16:34with a blunt, and afterwards the chess queen disappeared. So I've heard now,
- 16:41Carter, that queen's worth a fortune, and I own it, all
- 16:45legal, all fair, all square. How so well, Hopkin's uncle uncovered
- 16:52it fifty years ago. He sent him to the National Chess clott But the
- 16:55quest, along with some books and stuff. Well, he died right after
- 16:59that, and the club went bust before they knew what they owned. That
- 17:03jew queen is stored away somewhere in the club cellar, and you own it.
- 17:10I do. I bought a fair and square from the last living club
- 17:12member, old Jeremiah Hosteling. I got a bill of sail with the club
- 17:17property signed by him this afternoon for a thousand bucks. So that's how exactly.
- 17:22Ain't staying on a finger h nothing. Now a night, I'm going
- 17:26down to the clubhouse and get what I owned, all legal and above board,
- 17:30right, except for one little detail. Monk name somebody murdered house order,
- 17:36but I get out of here. It's a dirty double cross and four
- 17:41hundred been murdered and I didn't have a thousand dollars. I told you to
- 17:45get out. And if you know what's good for your card, and don't
- 17:48try to hang this wrap on me, I won't have hill monk. I'll
- 17:52just help you hang it on yourself. Your hair, mister Carter, but
- 18:07don't you lost the Moss Club? Miss Carter? Sure like a fine,
- 18:11but I don't like the people in it. Don you're not a minus well,
- 18:19mister Elphick Cruz, isn't it? I want your Alphand last time we
- 18:23met, what do you want with Jenny? Take your hand off me?
- 18:27If I don't, we get down at Jenny's dressing room. Don't see why
- 18:30that's any of your business. It's you're is he's trying to be my wife.
- 18:34That though when a couple of months it's a beautiful kid. Everybody ate
- 18:41like that kid, Hoskins, even months. I don't want you around it
- 18:45too. I have no intentions of shaping your Elford. Now, will you
- 18:48please get out of my way? It don't bless me with fancy talk car.
- 18:51I swear I'll break your neck if you go near. You don't want
- 18:53to stamp you, don't set aside and don't put it nasty how you like
- 18:56to do. When you get up again, I hope you have more tense.
- 19:11Hey, Mick, this fling your car quick matter discovery. I was
- 19:15coming out to meet you and I saw your cars are doing. We'll take
- 19:18a look inside. You don't know me. You've discovered in good heaven Jenny
- 19:23vallam trying? What a miss? What a confounded mys ur talk on and
- 19:44Jenny's ballance? Oh, stop pacing, Mick. You're making the office whirl
- 19:48around in circle. Nick, Why do you bring Jenny back to the car.
- 19:52Why haven't you reported her murder the Maddy. I'm going to just as
- 19:55soon as I figures it out. But maybe I was meant to find her
- 19:59and reported he's still out in your car. It's anybody fine? I know,
- 20:03I know, I know. It was the bank's feat for the next
- 20:08twisted strangler. You know she'd come to the car and I was waiting to
- 20:12teach me after I left the club. Only the killer came along and spoke
- 20:15to her first. Makes you've got to do something I know, I know,
- 20:19I do. I'm trying to think, well, my money's on most
- 20:22these are me maybe? Oh what did Jenny tell you anything? Make you
- 20:26help? No? Although she was friendly enough, because if I'm not who
- 20:30I was, ha this, I already know how. Oh I know a
- 20:34clue when I see it. See that big smudge of powder and make up
- 20:38she left on next please murder a makeup? That's who your magnificent. You
- 20:45saw me? I saw you just told me who murdered half Horn and Jenny
- 20:49Valentine. And all we gotta do is catch up? But how by turning
- 20:55you into a ghost, by turning me into all what that's you? I'm
- 20:59going to meet you up into the scariest ghost that I've ever seen. And
- 21:02to night you're going to haunt that chess club. I guess fucking just right
- 21:18a boat chess club stuff must be stored on on the cellar. Okay,
- 21:23come on, look the hawks instead of topping package sun hair the rack,
- 21:40make a tray off. Well that's can these books, but they can't be
- 21:45gold and diamonds. You'd see telling yourself and I'll take it easy. This
- 21:52is the bottom flash around your lights? Mark? Yeah, over there,
- 22:02against the wall. They had a case, says Hopkins. Ok come on,
- 22:14it's one of the pieces. You gonna get an open racing the box.
- 22:19That's what the kids said. Beside wants to go out box pure frying
- 22:26in a fix beer. Yeah, yeah, there it is, Okay,
- 22:36right, hand it over Harry and much interested in work in Harry view,
- 22:41I got news for your cruise. You're not taking it out of here last.
- 22:45I'm taking the Queen cruise and I'm leaving you behind. Oh you're dirty,
- 22:51but what I robbed? Jenny wants it that way, Cruise, It's
- 22:53too bad. I'll give me the queen dirty drop across you and Jenny ain't
- 22:57gonna corrupt me your mark. Monk and Cruise stand in the death of the
- 23:12cellar, staring up at the head of the stairs in horror. We'll hear
- 23:17what happens next in just a moment. Now for the conclusion of the case
- 23:26of a Dual Queen, Today's adventure with Nick Carter, stop you by you
- 23:30both war all that Scander and Monk and Cruise stand transfixed in the cellar of
- 23:36the National Chess Club. Nick cispers to Patsy, who stands at the head
- 23:40of the stairs in the blowing green grape, and Patsy say, he's coming
- 23:48down the stairs, coming down towards us. Wait a minute, Marks,
- 23:55you look like Holy mostly Journey say, for the love of mud day when
- 23:59you're trying to do by the some of the upper Jenny, what if I
- 24:00can see you a fight? I can't be a fool, Jenny Clay,
- 24:06I can't say, Jenny. Jenny said, how do you know that,
- 24:08Cruise Cotter? How do you know? Jenny zaid, only the man who
- 24:11killed I don't know that one of Tenny said, who says my assistant Patty
- 24:15bow and made up to look like Jenny the bad light. He was able
- 24:18to fool you, just as I plan you killed Jimmy wise guy. He's
- 24:23like he was going to cross me up with it. Huh, like a
- 24:26sucker out of me, like he made out of Hosky. But I show
- 24:29again, I show you more. You don't howl, laugh shut That went
- 24:36to your You don't hear you by the time you're due to take forty thousands
- 24:40boats setting down, that's not past the old story of Steve's falling out.
- 24:56So what do you know? Well, Cruise knew he was being double crossed
- 25:00by Jenny and Monk, so we decided to return the favor and double cross
- 25:03them. Oh well, that way he went out and killed Horthorn after month
- 25:07made the deal, tried to flame Monk by dropping up medallion m Then to
- 25:11fix Jenny, he strangled her and left her in my car. And in
- 25:15that way he said that Monk would take the rap for Horthorn's murder and Jenny
- 25:18would be dead and boats would be out of his way. Exactly, he
- 25:22selected Jewel Queen and lived happily. At leest, God did it? I
- 25:27still understand how I solve the CLEA was that to? You? Did it
- 25:32when you saw that smudge of makeup on my arm? Will you please explain?
- 25:37I most certainly will explain. I think the only person who could have
- 25:41touched me while I was in the Monk club who had makeup on his hand
- 25:45was Cruise. Remember I told you how he knocked my arm, Yes,
- 25:48just before you hit him and knocked him down. That's right. They must
- 25:52have smudged my arm with makeup, which means he must have done it on
- 25:55his hands. From Jenny's neck. Well, I'll be done. So he
- 25:59had to be the man off. Yeah, but what about the your queen
- 26:03you were queen wrote to monk. He bought it legally, so he's entitled
- 26:07to it. Oh suck. Oh, don't feel bad, Patty. If
- 26:10you want one, I'll buy you a doesn't tomorrow. I didn't think it
- 26:14out sixte bllance. The velvet box contained one very elated about one dollar and
- 26:26fifty to your queen. No, Patty, it wasn't Queen Elizabeth chest still
- 26:33a large I'm wearing a white white wave up. Maybe cui able to ask
- 26:37to see where it is the pay. That's some nice thing to imply,
- 26:45except why I certainly hope good, Queen that isn't going the same place.
- 26:49Who's going to then it'll be too late to do him any good. Welcome
