- 0:00Hi everyone. Welcome to Mini Scroll, the
- 0:03daily Internet culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories
- 0:06from social media, the creator economy and the digital space
- 0:10every Monday through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:14the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:19Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:22Happy Thursday. So just a reminder, there will
- 0:26be a deep dive tomorrow, but there will be no Mini Scroll on
- 0:29Monday because it is a public holiday in NSW where I live in
- 0:34Australia. And thank you guys so much for
- 0:37all of the questions for the Q and AI have a lot of questions.
- 0:41I'm really excited to get into them.
- 0:43So that will be live next Friday.
- 0:45All right, guys, let's just get into the stories for today.
- 0:49I'm going to be honest, it was a bit of a light Newsday, but I
- 0:52still found three because that's what we do here.
- 0:55We overachieve here at mini scroll.
- 0:58OK, the first story that I have for you guys is that the secret
- 1:02Lives of Mormon wives is getting a season 2.
- 1:06I'm so excited. I don't think any of you guys
- 1:09care as much about the show as I do, but you're along for the
- 1:12ride with me because this show is my everything.
- 1:14Like I'm obsessed with this show.
- 1:16I'm obsessed with the cast. Every interview that they they
- 1:19do on podcasts, I am listening. I am like tuned the fuck in.
- 1:24I am so excited. And apparently they start
- 1:27filming next week, which I think is perfect timing since the
- 1:31season just aired. There's probably so many like
- 1:34mixed emotions, different feelings, dynamics between the
- 1:38cast like this is the perfect time to pick up cameras.
- 1:41Plus, Taylor has been posting on TikTok a lot that this breakup
- 1:46or like presumed breakup from Dakota, whatever is going on
- 1:49between in them is like the hardest thing that she's ever
- 1:52gone through. So I think that I'm sure Hulu
- 1:55also wants to like capitalize on this moment as well.
- 1:58So I am just, I'm so excited. I mean, we all knew it was going
- 2:01to get a season 2. It's literally the talk of the
- 2:04Internet. And I think it was Hulu's most
- 2:08watched premiere, like something like that.
- 2:11It was it broke some record for the for the network.
- 2:14So yeah, very exciting. And I just hope it airs like in
- 2:19two months. Like, I just, I just need it
- 2:21now. The next story that I have for
- 2:23you guys is that X users are fighting about if it's ethical
- 2:28to Stan Mudang. OK.
- 2:30So earlier this week, a Twitter user at Dogtism posted a thread
- 2:34that went viral criticizing the internet's love of Mudang as
- 2:38they claimed that the Cao Kyo Zoo that she lives at in
- 2:42Thailand is unethical. And I understand, like zoos are
- 2:46typically unethical. However, there is so much
- 2:49cultural context here. There's just, I mean, there's
- 2:52also just different types of zoos.
- 2:54Like Jordy and I went on, Oh my God, what where were we?
- 2:58We went on a famil with a brand maybe like a year and a half ago
- 3:01and we went to a zoo, quote UN quote, but it was actually like
- 3:05an animal conservation park and it was like open air.
- 3:10Oh my God. It was actually like amazing,
- 3:12and we learned about how they are like rehabilitating and
- 3:15conserving all of these different animals who are sick,
- 3:18abused, endangered. It was an amazing experience.
- 3:22I wish I could remember where we went and who we were with.
- 3:24But anyways. So that is kind of the vibe of
- 3:28this zoo apparently that Mudang lives at.
- 3:30But first, I'll read you a couple of tweets from Dogtism.
- 3:33So they wrote photos. Leave more to be desired.
- 3:36The facility is dilapidated, enclosures are subpar, walls
- 3:41caked with dirt. Guests are seemingly allowed to
- 3:44feed and interact with the animals, and I mean all of them.
- 3:48So first of all, dogs ISM, have you been to the zoo?
- 3:51How do you know that the facility is dilapidated and the
- 3:54enclosures are subpar? Just from photos and videos that
- 3:57you see? They also wrote, Oh and there's
- 3:59a wild monkey problem too but that's neither here nor there I
- 4:03guess. And they snapped photos of
- 4:05monkeys like around the zoo. Oh my God.
- 4:08OK so it kept going but basically this user was calling
- 4:10the zoo like a shit hole and that they're exploiting animals
- 4:14and this set people off, especially Thai people who
- 4:18obviously, like I said, have this cultural context around the
- 4:21zoo and its actual treatment of the animals.
- 4:24So in short, the Cao Kio Zoo in Thailand where Mudang lives is a
- 4:29state funded open air zoo. According to one user, Yami,
- 4:34whose thread is going even more viral than the original thread
- 4:37from Dogtism quote, it is located in a natural forest
- 4:41surrounded by mountains and is largest open zoo in Thailand at
- 4:452000 acres. I mentioned this because the
- 4:47thread left it out and it seems many people think it's a small
- 4:50dinky zoo. So the zoo also takes animals
- 4:53from abusive backgrounds and apparently, you know, treats as
- 4:56animals really well. And on the point of having a
- 4:59monkey problem, Thai users are like, well, like wild monkeys
- 5:04are the same as like wild squirrels in North America.
- 5:07Like, they're literally just everywhere.
- 5:09They're like, what's an Australian equivalent, like bin
- 5:12chickens? So basically everyone is kind of
- 5:15banding together saying, like, whether you, you know, think all
- 5:18zoos are unethical or not, like, this particular zoo is really
- 5:21important for conservation. It's not like the typical zoo
- 5:25that you think of when you think of, you know, a North American
- 5:28zoo. And because of all of this, the
- 5:31original poster who started this has now apologized.
- 5:34So they wrote, making one final tweet to address some major
- 5:37things. The thread has been deleted and
- 5:39has been since this morning. I have only blocked those
- 5:41sending negative comments and threats with no constructive
- 5:44criticism. Since this morning, I've worked
- 5:47to apologize and unblock others. So I guess anyone that was like
- 5:50going against what they initially said was getting
- 5:52blocked, they continued. I am doing this all while having
- 5:55to function as an adult doing my day-to-day things.
- 5:58Please forgive me for the time in which it is taking me to
- 6:00address this after a rushed thread in the 1st place.
- 6:03Last thing I want to do is give 1/2 assed apology.
- 6:06I would like to once again extend my genuine apologies to
- 6:09the zoo, the handlers and locals affected by my actions.
- 6:13It is also important to note that this person has in their
- 6:16bio that they are 22. So I think that is also, you
- 6:22know, Speaking of context, I think that's important context
- 6:25as well. You know, I think we see this a
- 6:28lot where people end up like fighting with really young
- 6:30people online and you don't realize the age of the person
- 6:33that you're fighting with. And yes, 22 is an adult, but
- 6:37that's still a very young person.
- 6:38And it's really easy to get wrapped up in this like social
- 6:42justice warrior persona online when you're really young because
- 6:47everything feels really big and important and it feels good to
- 6:51feel righteous, you know? And I don't necessarily think
- 6:53that it's conscious and we all get trapped in that.
- 6:57Absolutely. Like I get trapped in that on
- 6:59this podcast, you know, when I report on certain stories for
- 7:01you guys, like it's very easy to get wrapped up in that because
- 7:04you think that it's going to give you the feedback that you
- 7:06crave that validation. And so I think it can be easier
- 7:10to fall into that the younger that you are.
- 7:12So justice for the cow, Kyo Zoo and no more slander for Mudang.
- 7:18Okay. And the last story that I have
- 7:20for you guys is that Wired just did a profile on Bobby Altoff.
- 7:24And again, I feel like she's kind of niche.
- 7:28It's like similar to what I said about the real, not the Real
- 7:30Housewives, the secret lives of Mormon wives.
- 7:33Like I don't know if any of you guys care about Bobby Altoff,
- 7:37but like I do, I think she's such an interesting example of a
- 7:42tik toker who was like really random.
- 7:44Like, yes, she had a lot of followers, but she wasn't like
- 7:46famous or like well known. And she's been able to parlay
- 7:50that into such a first of all mainstream career in such a
- 7:54successful way. And also so a very lucrative
- 7:56career. So she did this very interesting
- 7:59interview with Wired and I took a few tidbits from it, but she
- 8:03seemed to be quite transparent. So first, she is openly dropping
- 8:09her really deadpan, awkward persona.
- 8:12And Jordy and I actually did an episode last year on like the
- 8:16rude quote UN quote celebrity interview style and how that
- 8:19became really popular, especially among women recently.
- 8:22And the examples that we gave were Z Way, Amelia de Muldenberg
- 8:26and Bobby. And our conclusion in the
- 8:29episode was that while that style can be really funny, Bobby
- 8:34unfortunately doesn't seem to execute it well or as as well as
- 8:38the other women. And therefore it doesn't really
- 8:41land. And it just kind of seems like
- 8:42she's just being mean to her guests and like she doesn't
- 8:45really want to be there. Doesn't seem like she's having
- 8:47fun with her content. So she said in this interview
- 8:52that it is a character. And that character was like a
- 8:54manifestation of how uncomfortable she felt
- 8:58interviewing these huge celebrities on the podcast.
- 9:00And now she kind of doesn't need to maintain that persona anymore
- 9:05because it kind of helped her through this transition phase,
- 9:07which I actually think is interesting.
- 9:09I like that she got famous from that persona and has decided
- 9:13quite quickly to drop it. I think very often when it comes
- 9:18to success in the public eye, it can be like whatever makes you
- 9:23successful. I think we tend to hold on to
- 9:26that and I like that. She's like allowing herself to
- 9:29be fluid with that. I don't know, I thought that was
- 9:32interesting. Maybe I'm just like a Bobby
- 9:33Altoff Stan, I don't know. Mudang Stan, Bobby Altoff Stan,
- 9:38Secret Lives of Mormon Wives Stan.
- 9:40This podcast is just me talking about all my favorite things.
- 9:43She also said that she recently signed a deal to produce, write
- 9:47and star in ATV Comedy about her rise to fame.
- 9:50So again, another huge example of her being able to like parlay
- 9:54this really random niche intranet fame into something
- 9:57mainstream and successful. And she also opened up about how
- 10:01much money she has made. She was tight lipped about how
- 10:05much she currently makes. However, she was asked about
- 10:08TikTok and how TikTok brand deals work and how much money
- 10:12she makes, and she said that last July she was making quote
- 10:16around 250,000 to $300,000 a year from brand deals on TikTok
- 10:21and the creator fund. I was doing pretty well for
- 10:24myself. I thought I had really made it.
- 10:26I didn't know there was a level above that.
- 10:29She then said to maintain that you need to go consistently
- 10:32viral. And so she was making like 10
- 10:34videos a day. And you know, that's just not
- 10:37sustainable. Like you can't have that many
- 10:39ideas. And that's unfortunately for her
- 10:43account. At least that's how much she
- 10:44needed to be pumping out to like have the off chance of a video
- 10:47going viral or for all of her views to add up to continually
- 10:50make that amount of money. So she said she saw on TikTok a
- 10:54girl talk about a podcast that she was doing like her podcast
- 10:57and how she was making around $300,000 a year from the
- 11:00podcast. Can I just say as somebody that
- 11:03has a podcast, I would say .05% of people are making $300,000 a
- 11:10year from their podcast. OK, let me just say that.
- 11:13So she was like, OK, wow, that's what I need to do next.
- 11:16Like that will help alleviate some of the pressure from like
- 11:19how much I need to be posting on TikTok.
- 11:22So she didn't say how much she makes from her podcast, but I'm
- 11:26going to say it's probably, I mean, I'm going to say it's at
- 11:29least three, 100K, especially given the guest that she has.
- 11:31And she also did talk about like the industry plant delegations.
- 11:35I mean, I think we all know she's not an industry plant at
- 11:37this point, but her podcast and the caliber of guests she was
- 11:41getting like seemed so unbelievable.
- 11:43And it is unfortunate that, like, she did have this Internet
- 11:47fame and it was niche, but she still had it.
- 11:50And it is unfortunate that, you know, we didn't believe her.
- 11:53Like we didn't believe that she could just like get these guests
- 11:55by asking them to come on her podcast when she felt like a no
- 11:59name podcaster. And so everyone's like, she's an
- 12:01industry plant. She's sleeping with her guests
- 12:03like saying all these like horrible misogynistic things
- 12:05about her when in reality and she's she's talked about it
- 12:08before, but she said it in this interview too.
- 12:10Like I literally just DM Ed the like most famous people that
- 12:14followed me and asked if they would come on my podcast.
- 12:17And honestly, a lot of them said yes.
- 12:19So that's basically how she did it.
- 12:21And you know, she is also represented.
- 12:23She has a talent agent or she's part of a talent management
- 12:26company, I forget what, maybe CAA or UTA or something.
- 12:29And you know, they Rep a ton of celebrities.
- 12:32So I'm sure there are some negotiations that go back and
- 12:34forth between like her manager and the celebrities managers and
- 12:37things like that if they're part of the same agency.
- 12:39But regardless, that's basically how she did.
- 12:41And she's like, I'm just like a hard worker.
- 12:43And I think what this interview gave me was that if you don't
- 12:47ask, you won't get like, she is very money driven and she's very
- 12:51open about that in the interview.
- 12:52She says, I'm always thinking about money.
- 12:54Like, that's how she drives her career.
- 12:56She is actually a great example of someone who's been able to
- 12:59turn like, nothing into something.
- 13:02And it's because she just had the audacity to ask.
- 13:07And if there is one thing that I can leave you with on this
- 13:11Thursday as a female founder, it is have the audacity of a
- 13:18mediocre white man that will get you so far in life.
- 13:23I am trying to embody that every single day on my solo founder
- 13:27journey. It is hard, but it honestly
- 13:31works. Just ask for what you want, a
- 13:33little bit of inspiration to leave you guys with for this
- 13:36weekend. All right guys, thank you so
- 13:38much for listening to Mini Scroll.
- 13:39I love you guys. There will be a deep dive
- 13:42tomorrow and then I will be back on Tuesday.
- 13:46All right, bye.
