Transcript
- 0:00We always have a blast chatting with our guests about all sorts of
- 0:03different topics, but sometimes we go off the rails and dig deeper into
- 0:07their automotive and motorsports pasts.
- 0:09As a bonus, let's go behind the scenes with this pit stop mini sode
- 0:13for some extra content that didn't quite fit in the main episode.
- 0:17Sit back, enjoy, and remember to like, Patreon.
- 0:25So I've got a, I've got a 914 two liter.
- 0:27I've got a Bentley Arnage.
- 0:29I've got, you know, I've got a variety of cars.
- 0:31MGB GT.
- 0:33Those were all cars that were important to me as I was 16 years
- 0:37old and thinking someday I'm going to end up with a cool car.
- 0:40From that point forward, I started collecting the cars
- 0:42that I really like to drive.
- 0:44And so, uh, those are the cars that I have in my collection.
- 0:47You can't see over my shoulder.
- 0:49There you go.
- 0:49There's a cool nine 14 wide body.
- 0:52That's been in the family since 86.
- 0:55Is that an authentic GT?
- 0:56No, that was a 1.
- 0:588 SC out of Florida with air condition and much of the stuff.
- 1:01It's in the nine 14 registry, but it's a full on wide body car is a
- 1:05former pro solo nationally recognized winning car belong to my dad.
- 1:08He passed away.
- 1:09It was in storage.
- 1:10I have it, it had a six in it at several sixes in it at one point, and now I'm
- 1:15converting it back to a four cylinder.
- 1:17I'm going to put it that way.
- 1:18The car is still in the family.
- 1:19It's at the point of it can't be turned back original.
- 1:23So I'm tastefully restomodding it is what I'm, what I'm saying.
- 1:29So that's one of many in our collection.
- 1:31It's been around forever, but yeah, it's sitting in my garage
- 1:33right now waiting for me.
- 1:35So we're, we're kindred spirits in 914.
- 1:38How about that?
- 1:38Yeah, no, I I'm like a big, big fan of the 914.
- 1:42I think what's what a lot of people don't know.
- 1:45And as long as we're talking about the 914, there really is a David and Goliath
- 1:49story that goes back to Lamar in 1970.
- 1:53So here we are, if we can close our eyes for a moment and remember the first
- 1:58time we saw the Steve McQueen movie and what an impact that movie had on us.
- 2:02In 1970, the 917 comes in and absolutely is a behemoth.
- 2:09On the racetrack dethroning Ferrari's 512, which, you know, if you remember
- 2:14the history of it, Enzo was absolutely committed to make sure that Porsche
- 2:19did not win the 1970 race and he pulled out all the stops on the 512
- 2:24s and brought in a great racing team.
- 2:27Sam Posey was racing 512.
- 2:29It was just unbelievable.
- 2:31The 512 was like this major monster and Porsche comes in with a 917
- 2:36with very little, what should I say that, you know, they didn't have an
- 2:39awful lot of time to build this car.
- 2:41They come in with a 917.
- 2:43And so, as we know, based on the movie Le Mans by Steve McQueen, the 917 and the
- 2:48512 battle out to the very brutal end.
- 2:52But what most people don't know is that.
- 2:55In that same race, the 24 hours, the most grueling automobile race ever in
- 3:00the history of automobiles, I believe, in 1970, the Porsche 914 6 finished sixth
- 3:06overall, ahead of the 908s, ahead of the Ferrari 312s, ahead of the 911 S's, the
- 3:13914 6 GT finished sixth overall, so it was amazing That the car finished the
- 3:20race at all 24 hours, that's a group.
- 3:23I mean, there were a number of cars.
- 3:24If you go down the list, a number of cars and a number of manufacturers
- 3:27that couldn't finish the race, but the nine 14 six finished sixth
- 3:32overall, absolutely unbelievable.
- 3:34So a real David and Goliath story.
- 3:36So yeah, I'm a, I'm a huge nine 14 fan.
- 3:39And I believe they repeated that with a triple podium at the
- 3:43Nurburgring 24 in that same year.
- 3:45Maybe then it was the next year, 71.
- 3:48Oh, I don't know that.
- 3:49Yeah.
- 3:49Yeah.
- 3:49The poster's on my wall.
- 3:51Uh, 22nd of August, 1970.
- 3:55It looks like they took the top three spots in class with 914 sixes.
- 3:59So there you go.
- 4:00Yeah.
- 4:00I have to read it in German.
- 4:01It's halfway across the room.
- 4:03Yeah.
- 4:04Amazing.
- 4:05Yeah, 914 is an underappreciated, ugly duckling, call it whatever you want, but
- 4:09it's actually a great car and it's always been the big battle between the 911 right?
- 4:14They had to, I hate to say, neuter that car, handicap it, to keep it from beating
- 4:19the 911, because as a platform, it's a...
- 4:22Better handling vehicle, but you know, you got the flagship, you got the 911
- 4:26and the same is true today, right?
- 4:27They introduced the Boxster as the, let's say the heritage 550, the evolution, and
- 4:33then the Cayman, it's not too far off.
- 4:36They're basically 914s, right?
- 4:38I mean, come on, you put the right guts in the Cayman and it is
- 4:42going to give the 911 a real run.
- 4:45That's right.
- 4:45But they're always, they always want to keep it just
- 4:47slightly shy of the 911, right?
- 4:50That's why there'll never be a Cayman Turbo, not from the factory.
- 4:53You know what I mean?
- 4:54No, that's for sure.
- 4:56So we talked earlier about your posters and you mentioned the war, the rivalry
- 5:01between manufacturers and drivers and the spirit of competition and all that
- 5:06that's exemplified in those posters.
- 5:08I want to ask you this pit stop question, which we've asked many
- 5:11guests, but I'm going to frame it appropriate to our discussion.
- 5:15There is one rivalry outside of the many driver rivalries that we know,
- 5:19you know, Hunt versus Lauda, Senna versus Prost, things like that.
- 5:23There's another one that's in the modern times, and it's probably
- 5:26one of the most epic rivalries still between Porsche and Ferrari.
- 5:30Let's say you're deciding on the next year's theme for the concourse,
- 5:34and it comes between choosing between exhibiting in center court.
- 5:39The Porsche 959 or the Ferrari F40, which do you choose?
- 5:46Well, yeah, it's going to be, that'll be a challenge because next year's
- 5:49center court is Corvette and it will be, you know, erasing Corvettes that
- 5:54have an incredible pedigree in history.
- 5:56And of course the history of Corvettes, again, dating back to C1's
- 6:00all the way through the 2022 Z06.
- 6:03It's hard for me to put myself into that.
- 6:05Thought process for next year.
- 6:07However, when we think about the rivalry between Porsche and Ferrari, I will
- 6:12tell you that the history of automobile racing between those two marks is such
- 6:20that they are for me, a bloodbath.
- 6:25Rivalry, there's no love lost between the two.
- 6:28There is anger and focus between those two marks.
- 6:33As soon as you see those cars get on the track, whether it's the driver or whether
- 6:38it's the manufacturer, whether it's the supplier, the vendor of the parts that
- 6:43are in the car, the teams that support it, pit crew, there is an anger that
- 6:48exists between those two manufacturers.
- 6:51And when you think about that intensity.
- 6:54showing up within the same proximity of each other.
- 6:58I don't know.
- 6:59I don't know.
- 7:00I don't know how, I don't know how you point to one or the other.
- 7:04It is just such an amazing competition, a war between
- 7:10two, you know, it's, it's core.
- 7:12I mean, if you were an Oregon football player, it'd be like the
- 7:14difference between the ducks and the beavers, you know, it's just like,
- 7:20they're just going to come after it.
- 7:22So if you had to pick up the keys.
- 7:24off the table and drive one home.
- 7:26Which would you choose?
- 7:27Well, you know, I, gosh, I, if I could only have one car and it was
- 7:32mine personally, I think probably tipping my hat to this year's mark,
- 7:37it would probably be the Ferrari.
- 7:39You are in good company with that answer.
- 7:41Let me tell you.
- 7:43Porsche is not winning this battle in the long run.
- 7:46Well, and I don't have a Ferrari.
- 7:48I mean, I've got a 914 down in my garage, which I absolutely love.
- 7:52And I just sold my 2012 Spider back to the dealer.
- 7:56They wanted it so bad, but I've got to tell you that, that I think
- 7:59tipping my hat to this year's market would have to be Ferrari.
- 8:02Absolutely.
- 8:03Absolutely.
- 8:04And, and, you know, the, the arguments we get are fantastic.
- 8:06A lot of people will agree.
- 8:08The nine 59 was technologically more advanced.
- 8:12It was the super car of, of, of super cars at that time.
- 8:15But there's something about the F 40 that everybody just gravitates towards.
- 8:20It's amazing.
