- 0:00Welcome to an indie film podcast Film review.
- 0:03I'm Vic. And I am checked today we're
- 0:04going to be reviewing the movie Wormtown, which was produced by
- 0:07Andrew James Myers, Philip Garrett and directed by Sergio
- 0:11Pinero. When a cult that worships mind
- 0:13altering parasites takes over a small town, a trio of women in
- 0:17lockdown are dragged into a fight for survival and revenge.
- 0:20Victoria, would you rate Wormtown, buy it, rent it, or
- 0:24wait till it's free? On our scale there I would
- 0:28actually give Wormtown a buy it rating, not just because I
- 0:31really would love to see this film get supported, but because
- 0:34I have actually enjoyed watching it more than once I'm.
- 0:36Going to agree with you, I'm going to give it a solid buy it
- 0:38rating as well. So let's talk about some of the
- 0:40aspects that we enjoyed specifically about this film,
- 0:42some areas that might need to be improved upon.
- 0:45Do you want to start off and and maybe tell us what the film's
- 0:47about? Yeah, absolutely.
- 0:48OK, so Worm Town is set in small town America and the film drops
- 0:51us into a dystopian future where worms run the world.
- 0:55They are UV phobic parasites. They infect their leaders,
- 0:58starting with Mayor Joshua, who then uses propaganda and fear
- 1:02mongering to recruit more hosts over his very haunting, creepy
- 1:06and persistent radio broadcasts. Our story follows 3 rebellious
- 1:10women hell bent on avoiding infestation as they pursue
- 1:13greener pastures in nearby Amish country which remains safe from
- 1:17the world dominating worms. Yeah, I dug the entire concept,
- 1:21which was these these people that were infected with worms
- 1:25were kind of vampiric in a sense.
- 1:27They couldn't go out into the sunlight.
- 1:30You had this this counterculture to these, but they were
- 1:34basically religious zealots or political zealots or however you
- 1:37want to interpret the type of zealotry that they.
- 1:40That they there were zealots for sure.
- 1:42The radio was playing throughout, most of the time
- 1:45through when you're in the town, worm town in the film, and the
- 1:49people were infected with worms, couldn't go outside.
- 1:52Really creative idea for. Sure, they give them the
- 1:55Nightcrawler cult. Yes, is what they're called.
- 1:58And do you want to talk about because I don't want to spoil it
- 2:00because this is you're big on art department.
- 2:03So go ahead and why don't you talk about art department first
- 2:05on this movie? Art department absolutely
- 2:08crushed it. This is just this deliciously,
- 2:11disgustingly gore fest of a body horror film where you see these
- 2:16worms actually crawling inside people's body.
- 2:20If you don't like body horror, this is not for you.
- 2:22Body horror is in films like Saw.
- 2:26Where it's. Just kind of like, painful.
- 2:28Yeah, but this one was much more interesting than like the
- 2:31Hostile series for sure. Oh yeah, yeah, I would watch
- 2:33this over Hostile any day. Sorry.
- 2:35No shade to Hostile. No shade to Hostile.
- 2:38It's it's gross is the idea is like you're looking at some
- 2:41decomposing bodies of a lot of gore.
- 2:44Yeah, those types of things, there is a lot of that happening
- 2:47and it's just so well done. But it's paired with like these
- 2:51really cinematic, almost art house wide shots within the
- 2:55Super uncomfortable tight close-ups.
- 2:57The makeup on some of these characters is just mind blowing
- 3:00and I don't want to give away too much there, but it's just so
- 3:04worth the watch for the art department alone.
- 3:06Yeah, so indie films, I agree with that completely.
- 3:09So indie films that I usually watch, the cinematography and
- 3:15the sound, as long as those are gold, then you're looking at
- 3:18things like, OK, well what's the scope?
- 3:21And also you have the story aspect, right?
- 3:23So to me, I felt like the cinematography and the sound
- 3:27were just gold. The scope of this film was
- 3:32something that is really unique and indie film makers out there.
- 3:35I think that you could take a look at this and be kind of
- 3:38inspired at what you could potentially do outside of the
- 3:41Hollywood studio or major your studio environment.
- 3:44Because they bathe. They basically shot this in
- 3:46Ashland. OH the town Worm town has a post
- 3:50apocalyptic vibe and the locations where these three
- 3:53women were hiding out also kind of post apocalyptic vibe.
- 3:57Very warehouse covered in plastic sheeting.
- 3:59Yeah, and they did it really well.
- 4:01And you didn't think that this was not a super high budget
- 4:06major motion picture because they were able to convince the
- 4:10mayor of Ashland, OH, to shut the town down?
- 4:13Yeah, the mayor, Matt Miller, apparently was totally fine with
- 4:17shutting down Main Street for two days for them to get the
- 4:19shots that they needed in the big downtown square area where
- 4:23they can't be out in the daylight.
- 4:25So the town looks very empty during the daylight.
- 4:29And it's so cool. And I love that the town that
- 4:31shows me that the town cares about the arts, about this film,
- 4:35about supporting their their own community.
- 4:37I think that's really cool. It's sort of the Napoleon
- 4:40Dynamite story. Yeah, absolutely.
- 4:42And if you're making films, it might not be a bad idea.
- 4:44This kind of like gives me ideas of location scouting is super
- 4:48important. And if you want to have a post
- 4:51apocalyptic vibe for your film, you want to try to find some
- 4:55towns that you could potentially shoot in and people that are
- 4:58going to be flexible and, you know, a town in the Midwest, you
- 5:02know? Yeah.
- 5:04Might not be a bad idea. It might not.
- 5:06Especially a town that was, you know, heavy on manufacturing and
- 5:10stuff back in the day and maybe isn't so much now.
- 5:13Yeah. And not saying that that's
- 5:14Ashland's case, just a lot of other cities in the Midwest are
- 5:17that way. So you may be able to find some
- 5:19abandoned buildings and things that might and get creative with
- 5:22your shots. You know, all you need is a few
- 5:25establishing wides that really show off that vacant feel.
- 5:29Yeah. And boom, then you can just
- 5:31creatively cut some tighter ones and it looks like it's still
- 5:33real empty. And Worm Town did a fantastic
- 5:36job of that, and they also just did a great job with the
- 5:39cinematography overall. One caveat I do want to mention
- 5:42about this film because I'm very much a plot person, but the
- 5:46story here is definitely more vibe than intricate plot.
- 5:52Still extremely entertaining definitely.
- 5:54But if you're one of those people that wants to have like
- 5:57an intricately woven soap opera type plot structure where every
- 6:01action has an equal and opposite reaction, this one is.
- 6:04This one is more about a holistic look, very artistic,
- 6:08Yeah, about religion potentially, or politics, or how
- 6:12those things can infect us and what the results of some of that
- 6:15infection are. Yeah.
- 6:17And I actually really liked that they went such a very visceral
- 6:22reaction, right. Worms infesting your body just
- 6:25kind of makes you squirmy and uncomfortable.
- 6:28And so the fact that it can be applied to so many other things,
- 6:31whether it is religions or whether it is politics or
- 6:34whether it's the corporate structure that you work in every
- 6:38day, whatever it is that you're kind of battling against, it has
- 6:41a lot of allegory for that. But I also kind of like that.
- 6:44I mean, between the idea of, you know, standing up against
- 6:48oppressors versus the religious motifs.
- 6:51It also had kind of a hard look at at motherhood and then also
- 6:55had a couple moments of really, I don't know, almost an affront
- 7:00to gender norms. And so I just feel like there's
- 7:04a there's a lot of depth in how it doesn't matter who you are.
- 7:09If you're an indie filmmaker or you're just interested in indie
- 7:12films, you're going to find something to relate to in this
