- Forged In The Dark: that smell, that mystery smell. We have all been there. You notice it, you search until you find it, and then you get rid of it. The story of a mystery smell and how I am relating it to your growth journey. Welcome to Forged in the Dark. I'm your host, Jamie. Let's dig in. Now, when something stinks, you really go searching for it. and we all know that there are certain smells that that mean certain things. you smell that smell and look at the bottom of your shoe. Darn, I stepped in dog poo. You get into your car and you smell what? What do you smell? Does it smell musty? Did you leave a window down? Are you gonna have to dry out your car? But what happened to me the other day was in my kitchen. I I had been gone the entire day on Saturday, really wasn't home at all. And I noticed nothing. There was no bad smell. And on Sunday morning I got up and really wasn't home before I was back out the door for most of the day. But by the time I got home, all I did was walk through the door. And this smell hit me right in the face. And this smell was so bad, I immediately set off to find it. So the first thing I do is survey all of the potential hotspots for smells. I take out the trash, I put in a new trash bag, I look around, smell still there. Okay. I I go into another room, I do a couple things thinking that maybe the smell just needs a little bit of time to release. Come back into the kitchen. Smell is Just as strong. Okay, so it wasn't the trash. Now I'm exploring the backpack where I find a lunchbox that hasn't been cleaned out from Friday. And it doesn't smell good, but it's not the smell. And I go on to the gym bag with the dirty football clothes and same drill. It smells, but it doesn't smell that bad. And it's not the same smell. And I would drive myself crazy for at least the next hour until I found this smell. But that got me thinking. how does this relate to you and your growth journey? What is the smell in your life? Because look, if it's a smell, you are going to rip the entire kitchen apart to find it. But when it comes to something in your life that's not working, are you used to the smell? Have you gone nose blind? And we've all been there too. You walk into someone's house and maybe they have animals and their house really smells of those animals. But the person that lives in that house doesn't smell that smell because they have lived in it for so long. Now, how I am relating this to your personal growth and development is sometimes we're too close to the problem. And I don't actually love that I said problem there because a problem is only a problem when we label it a problem. If you have something in your life that you would consider a problem, it's really just information. You can look at the problem and know how to take action, what you can do, what you can control, or what you get to accept and let go of. But I did eventually find the smell. After taking out the trash twice, getting rid of all of the yucky lunch stuff, all of the dirty clothes. I mean, look, there were only a few dirty dishes in the sink, but I washed those dishes and I cleaned the sinks, and the smell was still there. I put in all of this time and effort. Finding the smell. And the whole time I couldn't help but to think about you. If you were sprayed by a skunk, would you just accept that you were going to stink until the smell went away? No. If you had something really stinky on your shoe or in your Car or in your kitchen, would you just sit on your hands and say, Well, I guess this is the way my house smells? No, you wouldn't. You would take the time to tear everything apart until you found that smell. Now, how can we take this and relate it to your life, to that perceived problem, that issue that has come up? That you get to reframe as information. What in your life stinks? What in your life have you become nose-blind to? It stinks, and you don't even know it stinks. Maybe everybody else knows it stinks. Again, with the skunk, if you were screwed. Sprayed by a skunk, would you just sit on your hands and say, I guess I'm going to smell this way until it goes away on its own? No, you would be on the internet ordering special soaps, taking baths in tomato juice, whatever it took to get rid of that smell. But when it comes to your life, sometimes you are simply Too close to the problem. If you can't smell the things that stink in your life, the things that simply aren't working, you have an opportunity here to get. Outside of the problem. You get to take a break from the problem. You get to think of this as the distance that your nose needs to reset, right? I mean, are you following me? Each and every one of you has a smell in your life. And and and think about it. Do do you often go searching out the good smells? Not nearly as often as you go running away from the bad smells. On trash day, there's this one area that I run in very often. And on trash day, I do not know what these people put in their cans, but it does not smell good. And and whenever I run past a Especially stinky trash cans. I run straight down the middle of the street and I run faster to get away from the smell. But these things that you can't see the smell, but you can smell the smell. You must give yourself some distance. You must Step outside. You must get yourself far enough away to get a fresh scent when you step back in. You must get far enough away from the problem to get a new perspective. we've talked about this, like the perspective from the top of a skyscraper. Is totally different than ground level. When was the last time you stepped outside of your current reality, your familiar, long enough to walk back through the door and smell the truth about what you are smelling? Okay, this. This definitely was a funny one today. And and I did, I did end up taking the kitchen sink apart. And I found a piece of food that was somewhere it wasn't supposed to be. I was deeply, deeply invested in finding this smell. I was not going to live in a stinky house. If you got sprayed by a skunk, you wouldn't resign to stinking for the rest of your life. So, your homework today is to give your nose a break so that you can step back in and smell the smells that you need to get rid of, whatever it takes. Okay. lighthearted episode. That's what I have for you today. Until next time.
