- 0:30Atlanta has been a tough opponent for Jack Fisher. Now the hard slider of swinging a miss one ball at his right.
- 0:40Lifetime against Atlanta, Jack Fisher has won four and lost eleven. This year he's lost one decision to the break.
- 0:51The Nets of the outfield swung around toward left. Breaking ball in the dirt backhanded nicely by Jerry Grudy in the count even 2-2.
- 1:01Bill Adair is on the coaching lines at first base. Bob Kennedy, the former Chicago Cub manager, is on the lines at third.
- 1:11Fishing 2-2. A high pop fly on the left side of the diamond. Hands swindled by Bud Harrelson on the rim of the outfield grass. He has it for the off.
- 1:31Center fielder Mack Jones won the opening game of the series for the Atlanta Braves with an opposite field home run hitting the 11th inning.
- 1:42Jones hitting a 2-50 with 11 homers, 32 runs batted in. He goes after a high heart with a strike one.
- 1:52The Nets of the Yankees in the Mayors benefit game on Wednesday night up at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. Game time 8 p.m. Hope you can make it.
- 2:01Fly ball in the air to the right center. Ron Swabota digging for it throws Larry Stahl and Larry Stahl makes the catch.
- 2:11The ball hung in the air but it was not hit very deep. Both Swabota and Stahl running at full tilt. Stahl picked it up running at full speed in shallow right center.
- 2:40Now the all-star Nats of the gas fielder Henry Aaron. Henry hitting 325 shares the home run lead with Houston's Jimmy Winn. He chants 21.
- 2:51Line drive in the left field up a 30 crack the curve ball. Tommy Davis up with it plays the ball back in.
- 3:04Swabota single left by Henry Aaron. Now Crane Drew moves over to hold against him defensively.
- 3:10In the batter is Rico Cardi the left fielder hitting a 2-70. Cardi has 10 homers and 37 runs batted in.
- 3:18And Fisher throws the first not in time.
- 3:23Now the sun is breaking through the overcast and the playing field is bathed in a bright sunshine.
- 3:31Down comes the pitch. Bow ball back to the screen. A one strike down on Rico Cardi.
- 3:38The weather of the showers the weatherman had talked about had the possibility yesterday or early last night.
- 3:45Finally arrived after the old timers game was all over. The timing was absolutely perfect.
- 3:51The flowers are thankful. Here's the pitch on the way. It's inside one ball and one strike. And so are the mess.
- 3:59The ball is in the air.
- 4:05Joe Torre waiting on deck.
- 4:12Many of the baseball people will be heading for the airport after today's game to fly to Anaheim, California for the All-Star game.
- 4:21Tom Seaver and Ken Boyer will be going for New York. Ken is the player representative and the player representatives will have a session during the All-Star break.
- 4:30The 1-1 delivery by Fisher fell back over the screen right under our broadcasting booth and the scramble is on as the ball ricochets back downstairs.
- 4:44Henry Aaron, Joe Torre and Denny LaMaster will be flying to Anaheim to represent the Atlanta Braves for the All-Star game.
- 4:52The 1-2 delivery hit off the end of the bat foul. LaMaster has been pitching great ball for Atlanta.
- 5:00After being named to the All-Star team, Denny was hurt and will miss the game due to the injury.
- 5:05His place on the pitching staff has been taken by Chris Short of Philadelphia.
- 5:11Pitching 1-2. Ground ball hit down under the glove of Crane Bull on in the right field.
- 5:17Aaron around second is cruising toward third and the Braves have runners on first and third.
- 5:27LaMaster base hit the right field by Rico Cartier with all that.
- 5:31Most of the time I think Crane Bull would just. He never touched the ball. It went under his glove as he went off to his glove's side trying to get it.
- 5:40And suddenly trouble jumps up in front of Jack Fisher here in the opening inning.
- 5:49Runners on first and third, two men down and Joe Torre is the batter.
- 5:54And a drive into the right, a base hit by Joe Torre.
- 5:57Here's Aaron down the line to score the first run of the afternoon.
- 6:00Galloping around the third goes Rico Cartier.
- 6:03And the Braves on three hits in a row have taken the lead 1-0.
- 6:08That's the third.
- 6:10That's the fourth.
- 6:12Number six.
- 6:14Weasley.
- 6:16For Joe Torre his 39th run batted in.
- 6:24Now the hitter is Pete Boyer.
- 6:26Pete the runner up on the Atlanta ballglove and runs batted in.
- 6:29He has 49.
- 6:33Runners at the corners, two men away.
- 6:37They're retired the first two batters, but three hits in a row and the Braves have a run in.
- 6:43Now the pitcher on the way, low and outside as the ball was.
- 6:52Now the phone has been answered down in the midst both then by Harvey Haddix and Dick Salma starts to warm up.
- 7:01On a day like this it doesn't take long to be warmed up.
- 7:04Here's the pitcher on the way, curveball over for a strike one and one.
- 7:10The old timers used to say in baseball on a day like this, Ralph, all you have to do is comb your hair and your arms get loose.
- 7:16Cover your comb, you can be ready.
- 7:18That's right.
- 7:19Hot and humid.
- 7:27Now Groney's setting up the target, the pitch to Pete Boyer. Gets the outside corner, he was in the black with that, one ball and two strikes.
- 7:39But Harrelson shaded toward the hole on the left side of the infield against Pete Boyer who has a good stroke to pull the ball.
- 7:46Bob Johnson plays him to hit the ball toward the middle as he shades over toward second.
- 7:50The one-two pitch, round ball on the right side of the batman, in front of it is Johnson. He throws the crane to the side of the box.
- 7:59One run, three hits, no errors, two left on.
- 8:03And score in the middle of the first, the bravest one, and the New York Mets coming to bat.
- 8:13Last of the first inning, the York behind, one nothing. Bud Harrelson leads off against the veteran right-hander, Jim Johnson.
- 8:23But warmly received by the crowd here at Shea's, the play at shortstop has been big league in every way.
- 8:31For the month of July, Bud Harrelson is now hitting 424.
- 8:38He now on the year is hitting 291 batting left-handed.
- 8:45Johnson swings out of his windup, the pitch inside and low, ball wide.
- 8:52Quite a job by Bud Harrelson when you realize that he never batted left-handed in his life until spring training a year ago.
- 8:59Now he's hitting 291 on the big leagues left-handed.
- 9:04Pitched by Johnson, off the outside corner, two balls and no strikes.
- 9:11Far more right-handers than left-handers in the nice to the leg, and as a result, Harrelson is up about twice as much hitting left as he is right.
- 9:23The 2-0 delivery, and a drive hit towards the gap, and left center field is thinking in for a base hit.
- 9:28And Harrelson takes the turn. He's on with a single left center.
- 9:38He was using that bat from the left side of the plate like a magic wand.
- 9:43The first part of the year he was using a light bat hitting left-handed.
- 9:48He went for a bigger bat, a 36-inch, 35-ounce bat. Just started getting that bat on the ball, and Ralph, he's really guiding that ball around.
- 9:56The nice thing about it is the fact that he hasn't been striking out. He seldom misses a ball.
- 10:01He's been fouling off the pitches that he's trained at that he hasn't hit, the others he's hit into fair territory.
- 10:07He's only been striking out about once every ten times at bat.
- 10:10Drive hit hard to left field by Larry Stahl, racing back as Cardigan, he one-hands the ball back on the edge of the warning track.
- 10:17But Harrelson has the scamper to get back. He was running on the plate.
- 10:21Hard hit drive by Larry Stahl, run down in deep left by Rico Cardigan.
- 10:27That brings up Tommy Davis.
- 10:33Tommy has really been a wrecking crew against the Atlanta Braves this year.
- 10:43Against Atlanta, and the two teams have now played 12 games this year, Tommy Davis has a 435 batting average.
- 10:53Against the Braves, he's had 20 hits in 46 times at bat, and has driven in 12 runs against them in the 12 games.
- 11:02Here's the pitch on the way, and the breaking ball is outside. It looks like a knuckleball, ball one.
- 11:09Ken Johnson, veteran right-hander from West Palm Beach, Florida, pitching for Atlanta.
- 11:15He has a wide repertoire of pitches, including a knuckleball. He has won eight and lost four.
- 11:22He has a lifetime record against New York of nine wins and five losses.
- 11:27And this year against him, that's Ken Johnson, tall, side-arming right-hander, has won one and lost one.
- 11:35There goes the runner, a ground ball hit down to first, bobble by a loop, and he picks it up.
- 11:41Makes the play at first, retiring Tommy Davis, as Bud Harrelson moves over to second.
- 11:47Number seven, Eddie Crane, rule the clean-up batter, hitting a 313.
- 12:01Mets trail, one nothing. We're in the last half of the first inning.
- 12:12Following the all-star break, the Atlanta Braves will open a homestand against Philadelphia.
- 12:20And a slow grounder into the dirt foul by home plate. It came back up and struck the bat a second time.
- 12:28Following the all-star break, the Mets play Cincinnati and St. Louis, then come right back to Shea
- 12:34for a four-game series against the Houston Astros. A night game on Tuesday night, July the 18th.
- 12:41A doubleheader on Wednesday, July 19th, on that senior citizens' day.
- 12:46And a rescheduled game on Thursday night, July the 20th.
- 12:50A swing and a foul hit as he goes after a knuckleball in the count of three, two.
- 12:58Thursday night, July 20th, will be batting helmet night, the boys and girls under 16, 16 all-under.
- 13:04Receiving a replica of the Mets batting helmet as they come into the stadium.
- 13:10Bud Harrelson leads off second. He's the dying run. He picks the crane, rule a drive of the year to right field.
- 13:16Bud Harrelson, drifting back to the warning track, takes it for the out.
- 13:20The Mets had two drives that deep to the outfield that were caught.
- 13:25No runs, one hit. No air, one left on.
- 13:29At the end of one inning, the score, the Atlanta Braves won.
- 13:34And the New York Mets nothing.
- 13:41Jack Fisher on the mound for New York. Dennis Menke is leading off in the top half of the second inning.
- 13:48And the hard sliders outside, one ball of no strike.
- 13:54The Braves, with three hits in a row, picked up a run in the top half of the first inning.
- 13:59Aaron, Cardi, and Corey had the base hit.
- 14:02And a curve breaks right over for a strike, one ball and one strike.
- 14:06And now Menke wants the ball extended by Shaq Crawford.
- 14:12And the ball is all right. It stays on the game.
- 14:19We'll keep you right up to date on all of the other action in the Major Leagues this afternoon.
- 14:25Foul ball, look out Ralph. Right over our head.
- 14:30Rikishang back down into the field back there.
- 14:36St. Louis won a big game last night on a home run on the 12th inning by Julian Javiera.
- 14:41They beat the Phillies 6-4.
- 14:44Cardinals now have opened up a three and a half game lead over second place Chicago.
- 14:48Leo DeRosha's Cubs have now lost six three games.
- 14:51The one two pitch.
- 14:53Inside is two and two.
- 14:56The first ball has always been a game of streaks.
- 15:00Cubs had a marvelous streak, winning seven in a row, lost one, won another seven.
- 15:08And a smash through the hole, a base hit to the left by Dennis Menke.
- 15:12Charles made a head-first dive for it and almost came up with it.
- 15:17But the Cubbies have now lost six games in a row, and they'll rely on Rich Nye,
- 15:23the left-hander who has seven wins to snap the losing streak in the Astrodome today.
- 15:28Don Wilson, the author of the no-hit game for the Astros earlier in the year, will be on the mound.
- 15:34St. Louis and Philadelphia tied 1-1 at the end of two and a half. Larry Joster against Jim Bunnings.
- 15:40An old friend of theirs, Billy Cowan, homered for Philadelphia, his second home run since being brought up.
- 15:49And a pitch shot, nothing was on.
- 15:52A batty, nothing. A Pittsburgh, nothing. At the end of three and a half, Gary Nolan, seven and two.
- 15:57Nineteen-year-old rookie right-hander pitching for the Reds against ex-net Denny Rybant.
- 16:02Rybant has won four and lost four.
- 16:05Later in the afternoon, the Dodgers and the Giants at Candlestick Park in San Francisco.
- 16:12And Woodward, around the bun, had to get out of the way of an inside delivery.
- 16:17And he missed the miss and no strike.
- 16:28Later this afternoon, the Yankees and the Orioles will complete a suspended game, the second game of a double-hitter last night.
- 16:34There goes the runner, and it's a blue-pit down toward third, taken by Charles.
- 16:38All he has to do is throw the first for the double play.
- 16:41The Braves are playing hit-and-run.
- 16:44I believe Ralph thought that ball hit the ground and took a long high hop because he went a second and stopped it.
- 16:50He didn't know that ball did not bounce.
- 16:54He can't make an easier double play than that.
- 16:57One of the prime rules on a double play when you're on first base as a runner is that you take a look at that hitter so you know where the ball's going.
- 17:03And he certainly didn't do it because he didn't know that ball was in the air.
- 17:08He had to be told after he got the second and was standing there.
- 17:11Two outs and nobody on. Ken Johnson, the batter.
- 17:17Breaking ball by Jack Fisher, low and outside, ball one.
- 17:21When the second game at Baltimore last night was stopped because of the midnight curfew, it was the Yankees nothing and the Orioles nothing at the end of sixth.
- 17:28Dillman Busquett was pitching against Wally Bunker.
- 17:32That suspended game will be completed and then the regular twilight game at 5.30 this evening.
- 17:39The 1-1 pitch to Johnson, low and outside, two balls and a strike.
- 17:44The Detroit Tigers have been making a lot of noise again of late.
- 17:48Victor McCall of the city of 16th home run came in the first inning today.
- 17:53And the Tigers lead Boston 1-0 against the end of 2. Jerry Pell against Earl Wilson.
- 17:58Washington 1, Cleveland nothing at the end of 4. First game of the double header.
- 18:03Phil Ortega pitching against Steve Hargit. Minnesota, Chicago in a double header. It will be caught and whorled in the first game.
- 18:10And the curve is popped up on the left side of the infield.
- 18:13But Earl Wilson on the skin part of the diamond makes the catch the side is up.
- 18:19No runs, one hit, no errors, ten left.
- 18:23At the end of an inning and a half, the Atlanta Braves won. The New York Mets nothing.
- 18:27Now here's a word from Rangel.
- 18:36New York turning by run, last of the second run, Swabota leads off against Ken Johnson.
- 18:45Ken Johnson is riding a personal forging and winning streak. He hasn't lost a ball game since the 4th of June.
- 18:52Ron Swabota to the floor.
- 19:14Ron hitting 259.
- 19:19Ken Johnson out of his windup. Ron Swabota runs up and tries to foul the ball off against the foot of umpire Shag Crawford.
- 19:28Ron has really been making some circus grabs in that outfield for New York. He made another one last night.
- 19:42He's played about as much right field on this homestand as you can ask anybody to play.
- 19:52Johnson's delivery, a slow curve of swinging a miss and the counter strike too. He fadded around him with that.
- 19:58Ken Johnson throws so many different pitches at you. It's hard to figure along with him.
- 20:04That was one right there that Swabota should have hit out of the parking lot. It was a hanging curve ball and sidearm, nice and flat.
- 20:13Another fad arm delivery and this one is over. Strike three called in the outside corner.
- 20:19One thing about him, Ralph, is he's got so many different pitches and different deliveries that it's pretty hard to guess on him. You've got to just be ready.
- 20:26One thing though, Bob, he doesn't throw hard so you can look for the soft stuff. You can actually look for breaking stuff off of him because his fast ball is not fast. He couldn't hurt you if he hit you.
- 20:36Couldn't puff you this, huh?
- 20:41Now, it's Charles the batter against Ken Johnson. Fad arm delivery off the outside corner. One ball and no strike.
- 20:58Bob Johnson, the on-deck batter. Ground ball bounced on the left side, cut off by a third backer, Quig Boyer, the fake Deau Allure, two men away.
- 21:10Two outs and nobody on. Johnson coming up.
- 21:15That's the Wrangler Chugga Mug. It's a wide-mouthed glass mug that holds 12 ounces of beer. And it even feels right when you pick it up.
- 21:23You know, we're selling them in handy cartons of six. They're just about the handiest sirsquintures in town.
- 21:29You'll find Chugga Mug on special display at your local stores in New York and New Jersey.
- 21:36Inside and high at Bob Johnson. One ball and no strike.
- 21:41This will be a busy ball club in Cincinnati as we open our next road trip with a twilight night doubleheader on Thursday night across the field.
- 21:51There's the fastest 50's drum and he wasted it inside and high ball, two to two and all.
- 22:05Yogi Berra coaching at first and Salty Parker coaching at third.
- 22:09The 2-0 delivery. A check swing foul balled it down the first baseline.
- 22:18Frank Howard has just hit his 23rd homerun of the year. It came in the fifth inning with a man on.
- 22:23Washington leads Cleveland, three to nothing at the end of four and a half.
- 22:27Frank Howard, Ralph, is really blossoming out. He's on his way to his biggest year by far.
- 22:32Oh they finally got him to spread out and quit striding and that's been his biggest ball all his life and he would never change. He finally has.
- 22:39Line drive hit by Bob Johnson and goes over Minkiewski in the left center field for a base hit.
- 22:46As big as he is, he doesn't need to stride much either.
- 22:48You remember players like Gus Zernio. They spread out and didn't stride.
- 22:52Vern Steaver and Gil Hodges had a stance that was a wide spread stance that used just a little bit of a stride
- 23:00and he finally prevailed on Frank Howard to cut down that big stride where he would get way out in front and evidently that's made the big difference.
- 23:08If a slugger has a hit to do swing, spreading out is just about the best thing you can do to a doctor that event.
- 23:13It will keep your balance and that's what you're looking for.
- 23:16Jerry Grote is the batter against Ken Johnson and he takes inside ball one.
- 23:22Braves one, Metz nothing were in the last of the second.
- 23:30Felipe Lou holding against the baserunner Bob Johnson.
- 23:38He had Jerry fool. He tried to hold up on the swing but he had gone too far and counted even one ball one strike.
- 23:51Ken Johnson on the mound. The big right hander's pitch is popped into the air between the mound and third base.
- 24:11Fleet 40 are under it and Fleet makes the cut to the side of the mound.
- 24:16No runs, one hit, no errors and one left on. And at the end of two innings the Atlanta Braves won the New York Metz nothing.
- 24:26Now we go to the third inning here at Shady City and the Braves in front one nothing.
- 24:31And as Felipe Lou runs up to get against Jack Fisher coming up to follow all the action for you, Ralph Keiner.
- 24:39Thank you Bob Murphy and hi everyone. Felipe Lou the lead off here in the top of the third.
- 24:43The Braves in front one nothing. Jack Fisher pitching for the Metz.
- 24:48And the first pitch to the Lou, a curve ball, a wild swing and a miss at strike one.
- 24:53Frank Howard leads the major leagues in home runs now with his home run today.
- 24:58His highest total 31 in any one season. Now the pitch backs, slight foul to the right side.
- 25:06Strike two. Frank now with 23 and the season about halfway through.
- 25:15He untied the tie between himself and Harmon Killibrew.
- 25:22From the national league a tie between Jim Wynn and Hank Garrett for the leadership 21.
- 25:30Felipe Lou popped up the shortstop his first time up batting at 280 a right hand batter.
- 25:36The two strike pitch by Fisher is popped up again this time in foul territory.
- 25:41Coming over is Ed Childs to make the play for this first out here in the third.
- 25:47Now the batter coming up is Mac Jones and we'll pause for station identification.
- 25:51This is the New York Metz baseball network.
- 25:53You're tuned to the bright sound in radio. WGY, a General Electric Broadcasting Company station at 810 on your dial.
- 26:01Schenectady, New York.
- 26:06Ralph Keiner along with Bob Murphy and Lindsey Nelson from J Stadium.
- 26:09The first pitch to Mac Jones, a curve ball down low and Jones goes for it, a swing and strike one.
- 26:20Braves, one, that's nothing.
- 26:24In the background announcement that changes the stat sheet here.
- 26:29Now foul ball on the ground ball swing at strike two.
- 26:33On the stat sheet they have the Metz in ninth place, virtually in a tie with Houston at 390.
- 26:40Actually what is the case, the Metz are 17 and one half games out of first place.
- 26:45Houston is 18 but due to the difference in game plays, Houston leads in percentage.
- 26:51They have a percentage of 390 and be carried on down one more point for 3904.
- 26:58The Metz have a percentage of 3896.
- 27:01Now the next pitch is outside.
- 27:03Fastball missing, one ball two strikes.
- 27:06What they have done on the stat sheet was narrow it down to the nearest three number figure and that would put them both at 390.
- 27:14But technically Houston is in ninth place, 8,000 of a percentage point higher than the Metz.
- 27:25Now a swing at a curve ball strike three and Jack Fisher gets his second strike out.
- 27:31Right fielder, Hank.
- 27:35That brings up Hank Aaron.
- 27:37Hank Singleton on one pitch his first time up and has scored the only run of the ball game.
- 27:41And with 21 home runs, 56 runs batted in.
- 27:45He has scored 67 runs so far this year in 78 ball games.
- 27:50Batting 328, he grounds the first pitch down to short.
- 27:53But Harrelson comes up throwing and gets him by about three strikes to retire the side.
- 27:58One, two, three for Jack Fisher and the score at the end of two and a half innings, the Atlanta Braves won the New York Metz nothing.

- 28:59Your credit is wealth at Armory.
- 29:01Follow the wise car buyer to Armory Garage, Central at Colvin in Albany.
- 29:15Bottom half of the third, the Braves in front, one nothing, and the Mets coming up.
- 29:19Jack Fretcher, the leadoff batter for the Mets, batting against Ken Johnson.
- 29:24Johnson has given up no runs.
- 29:27He has allowed two hits while striking at one.
- 29:32First pitch to Fretcher, a breaking ball outside, ball one.
- 29:35Jack has three hits this year and 35 times up.
- 29:38He's batting 086.
- 29:45Johnson, a veteran right-hander with a variety of pitches.
- 29:48His next delivery is a fastball hit off the end of the bat, down toward first base.
- 29:52Philippe Ballou comes up with it, trots to the back for the unassisted out.
- 29:57And the first out here in the bottom half of the third.
- 29:59That'll bring up Bud Aronson, who has a base hit in one time up.
- 30:03Bud now batting 272.
- 30:11Bud's base hit was a looping line drive into left center.
- 30:16Right now Rico Cardi in left field has moved to about eight steps in the foul line,
- 30:21and that is a little hard to believe that he can play there for him,
- 30:24because he's not giving himself a chance on a ball hitting the left center field.
- 30:30Now they're moving a little bit further away from the foul line.
- 30:35He's actually protecting foul territory more than fair.
- 30:40Now a line drive over short in that hole.
- 30:42It might go for extra bases.
- 30:44The center fielder has to knock it down in left field.
- 30:46He doesn't get it, and Aronson goes into second.
- 30:55So Bud Aronson taking advantage of the defensive position of Rico Cardi in left field,
- 31:01hitting the ball right directly to left field,
- 31:04and the center fielder had to come over and stop it from going on through.

- 33:08And the first pitch to Tommy, a swing and a miss, strike one.
- 33:12Tommy has it safe in his last seven ballgames without one here in this one.
- 33:20That was 11 for 27, stretch 407 batting average.
- 33:24Got four for four last night, his one thousandth.
- 33:28Major Lake Bay said his last time up.
- 33:32He is the leading batter against Atlanta with 20 hits and 47 times up,
- 33:36and he has driven in 12 runs against the Braves.

- 34:31They have one run on four hits, the Mets have no runs in three hits with the runner at second base.
- 34:37Now Johnson back to the plate and a knuckleball has popped up in the shallow left field.
- 34:41Going back is Mickey, he might not get to it coming into Cardi.
- 34:44He cannot get it, it dropped into a base hit and Nelson scores the tying run.
- 34:52Tommy Davis with a blue pit, a little fly ball that dropped in front of Rico Cardi,
- 34:57who was playing the deep left field and he couldn't get to it.
- 35:01The shortstop Mentsy took after it.
- 35:03He couldn't get to it.
- 35:05And Tommy Davis picked up his 42nd run batted in, his 13th against the Atlanta Braves in 13 ball games now.
- 35:12And the batter coming up is Ed Craneball.

- 36:39Number four.
- 36:41Jay Ritchie, a right hander, is now warming up on the bullpen for the Braves.

- 37:08Ron Sloboda was struck out on a knuckleball, he got Todd Mucky his first time up, batting 257.
- 37:16And the first pitch to him is a knuckleball that is too low for a ball.
- 37:32Johnson sets up again, Davis at second base, and Craneball at first.
- 37:38The pitch back is a breaking ball that's over the outside part of the plate, strike one call.
- 37:43One and one.
- 37:53Now Johnson again a look at second.
- 37:55And the pitch, it is fouled back out of play.
- 38:00Johnson out in front with a counted one ball and two strikes.
- 38:07Sloboda has batted in 17 runs so far this year in 58 ball games.

- 40:43and a former managing coach of the Chicago Cubs.
- 40:51Leo DeRosha, when he took the job with the Cubs, said, I don't care what they call it upstairs, on the field I'm the manager.
- 40:58He has done that job on the field.
- 41:02That rotating coach's plan put in by Mr. Wrigley certainly proved to be not good.
- 41:11Now swinging a ground foul ball.
- 41:15Ball rolling away in the count one and two.
- 41:18Cubs have lost six straight ball games, but they're still in second place.

- 43:09Mentee didn't see the ball and went all the way down to second.
- 43:12And after Giles caught it, he could have walked to first base to put the fourth play in there.
- 43:18But he threw on over to Craneville for the double play.

- 1:02:55Mets have the speedy Harrelson on first piece the tying run.
- 1:03:00Guys are much darker overcast down.
- 1:03:04For a while the sun had broken through.

- 1:06:25If it's cocky like to make a pitching change at this time.

- 1:06:38When Tommy Davis brought home Bud Harrelson the next took the lead in the fourth inning on a home run by Ed Charles.
- 1:06:45But in the top of the fifth inning a two run homer by a fully balloon put Atlanta back in the lead three to two.

- 1:14:39I put it up because I listen to that man who said possible.
- 1:14:43It is beginning to appear quite possible. That's what it's beginning to appear.
- 1:14:48I was a little worried because if you left it down you might be driving yourself a mobile swimming pool.
- 1:14:53The special policeman call it a roller skate round ball down the third base like strike one dead.
- 1:15:02It may not rain a little but it certainly looks like it has a chance.
- 1:15:11Charles Homer his last time up his third of the year in the home run but New York in front two to one.
- 1:15:17The greatest one in front on a loose to run over and then the Mets tied the game in the home fifth inning.

- 1:15:27The overhand peg to Philippe Fallu is in time for the off.
- 1:15:36Bob Johnson coming up.
- 1:15:44The Mets have had some marvelous baseball on this 14 game home stand.
- 1:15:50The Mets have won seven and lost six and we have another good game going today.
- 1:15:55Breaking ball off the outside corner one ball and no strikes.
- 1:16:00After winning the first two games of the Giants series the Mets lost the last game of that series two to one.
- 1:16:06Lost the opener of this Atlanta series three to two at eleven innings.
- 1:16:10Bounce back to win behind the strong pitching of Tom Seaver last night.
- 1:16:14Foul ball back over the screen no play.
- 1:16:17One ball one strike to Bob Johnson.
- 1:16:21Johnson has single the left center and been struck out one for two.
- 1:16:31Wednesday night will be an important night to the Mets as far as their future pitching plans are concerned.
- 1:16:36Don Cardwell will be pitching for the first time since going on the disabled list.
- 1:16:41And a pop foul outside third. Boyer is shooting over on the warning track and he makes the grab.
- 1:16:51Don Cardwell has been sideline since the third of June.
- 1:16:57He had an elbow ailment.
- 1:16:59The elbow was drained and he was placed on the disabled list.
- 1:17:03And then after he started to try and get himself going again when the elbow started to clear up he developed tendonitis in his shoulder.
- 1:17:13Jerry Grote has popped the third and struck out.
- 1:17:16Ground ball hit down to third. Boyer grabs the hop.
- 1:17:18Hurls from deep behind third and the side is up.
- 1:17:21Very strong one two three inning by Ken Johnson.
- 1:17:24No runs no hits no errors and none left.
- 1:17:27At the end of sixth the Atlanta Braves three and the New York Mets three.
- 1:17:31And Lindsey Nelson will be with you in just a moment to detail the play.
- 1:17:35Right now here's a word from Rangel.
- 1:17:37There's a guy in New York who has a ball.
- 1:17:41It's made of iron and it weighs two tons.
- 1:17:44He bounces it against buildings and the wall from tumbling down.
- 1:17:52I'm what they call a ball man.
- 1:17:54There are just actually fifty of us around and five really good ones.
- 1:17:59I mean excellent. Well you see those three walls there.
- 1:18:02I can knock all three of them off in one swing and still put the ball down on a postage stand.
- 1:18:07You know that was about three weeks ago.
- 1:18:10I got a call the guy needed me on a Monday and I had a job.
- 1:18:13So it's kind of flattering the guy held up the construction for a week until I was available.
- 1:18:18If you're going to throw your weight around in New York you really got to know what you're doing.
- 1:18:24Same thing's true of beer.
- 1:18:26There are 302 beers trying to make it in New York today from all over.
- 1:18:30But only one beer has made it to the top.
- 1:18:32The Rich Dry Lager.
- 1:18:34Rangel. Rangel.
- 1:18:37In this town either you have it or you don't.
- 1:18:41Second baseman. Woody Woodward.
- 1:18:45Now the Atlanta Braves come up in the seventh inning and it's the number eight man in the batting order.
- 1:18:49Woody Woodward he is a right hand batter facing right hand pitcher.
- 1:18:52Jack Fisher.
- 1:18:54Bob Shaw is throwing down in the med bow pen.
- 1:18:57Left handed Nick Kelly is throwing in the Atlanta bow pen.
- 1:19:01Now here's a curve ball. In for a call. Strike one.
- 1:19:05Through six innings.
- 1:19:07The Atlanta Braves three runs. Eight hits. No errors.
- 1:19:10The New York Mets three runs. Seven hits. No errors.
- 1:19:14Strike one pitch to Woody Woodward.
- 1:19:17Blowing away it's 1-1.
- 1:19:19Today's baseball quiz.
- 1:19:20Since 1900 three pitchers have been 20 game winners playing in both leagues the same season.
- 1:19:26Can you identify two of the three?
- 1:19:311-1 pitch. Swung on and hit high into the air.
- 1:19:34Back of the third. Drifting towards the stands.
- 1:19:36And might be playable. Harrelson is right there and Charles makes the catch.
- 1:19:41Just in front of the cylinder on which the tarp is rolled up against the barrier in front of the field boxes.
- 1:19:49And now Tito Francona is coming out to bat for Ken Johnson.
- 1:19:55Francona is a left hand batter picked up earlier this year by the Atlanta Braves.
- 1:19:59From the Philadelphia Phillies he is hitting 267 with three homers and eight runs batted in.
- 1:20:08Francona batting for Johnson.
- 1:20:12So Ken Johnson is out of the ball game after having pitched six innings.
- 1:20:17In which he gave up three runs on seven hits, struck out three and walked one.
- 1:20:22The man throwing in the bullpen is Dick Kelly.
- 1:20:32Francona settling stuff into the batter's box. One man out, nobody on base.
- 1:20:43Jack Fisher with his no wind up delivery starts to work and Francona backs out.
- 1:20:47So Fisher breaks off the delivery.
- 1:20:55Now a pitch that is low for a ball. Double barrel action now in the mid bullpen.
- 1:20:59Right hander Hal Runner. Left hander Don Shaw.
- 1:21:061-0 pitch to Francona. Hit deep to center field. It's way back there.
- 1:21:11The ball goes to the warning track and hardens it down.
- 1:21:15Ball is hit over 400 feet to straight away center field.
- 1:21:21Two men out, nobody on base and Philippe Elou is coming up.
- 1:21:26He had a two run homer in the fifth inning that put the Braves temporarily ahead bringing them from behind.
- 1:21:32Since then the Mets have scored the run that tied it at 3-3.
- 1:21:36Elou is one for three for the afternoon.
- 1:21:39Hitting 282 for the season. Here's a pitch foul back and out of play.
- 1:21:45Down to strike one.
- 1:21:50The answer to the baseball quiz, the three two league 20 game winners in the same season where Joe McEnady is a swing and a base hit in the center field.
- 1:21:58For Philippe Elou, Larry Stollup returns it to the infield.
- 1:22:03Joe McEnady, 21-18-192. Pat Flaherty, 21-11-194.
- 1:22:09And Hanks Baroy, 21-7-1945 when he split the year between the Yankees and the National League Tennis winning Chicago Cubs.
- 1:22:20Now the Braves have a runner at first on Philippe Elou's single to center.
- 1:22:24There are two men out and Mike Jones is coming up. He's nothing but three left hand batter.
- 1:22:33Rainpool comes over to hold against the runner.
- 1:22:39Fisher steps and steps off the rubber.
- 1:22:46Making pitches outside for a ball.
- 1:22:52Fisher has struck out two and walked none this afternoon.
- 1:22:56The hit by Philippe Elou was the ninth off Fisher.
- 1:23:07Elou takes his lead.
- 1:23:091-0 pitch curve ball high and it's 2-0.
- 1:23:13Mike Aaron is waiting on deck.
- 1:23:34Now Fisher sets up and throws to free.
- 1:23:36Out in time Elou is back safely.
- 1:23:43Mike Jones up there with a close stance at the plate.
- 1:23:48Fisher again throws to first and Elou is back safely.
- 1:23:52Trying to keep a short haul to figuring that Elou might very well be going on a 2-0 pitch.
- 1:23:56They might very well play hit and run.
- 1:23:58With a score tied 3-3.
- 1:24:05Elou has a 2-0 pitch thrown on and fouled off. He wasn't going. It's 2-1.
- 1:24:15That's after the defense shaded around toward right on left hand batter Mike Jones who has good power to all fields.
- 1:24:21He led off the 11-10 with a home run over the fence into the Braves bullpen and left field right before last.
- 1:24:29Bringing the foul ball back to the play and the count is even now 2-2 to Mike Jones.
- 1:24:36He's out with Ralph Cantor and Bob Murphy. Chase stayed him in New York and Dick Kelly is coming to do the pitching now for the Atlanta Braves.
- 1:24:42He worked for two thirds of an inning last night and was touched for one run on two hits.
- 1:24:48He has a record of one win and seven losses.
- 1:24:55He's going to be left hander and he'll be working to right hand batter Jack Fischer up to lead off for the Mets.
- 1:25:00This is a managerial decision to make right here allowing Fischer to bat in the bottom half of the seventh inning.
- 1:25:09Leading off with a score tied 3-3.
- 1:25:13Fischer is nothing but 2. 3 for 37 this season.
- 1:25:18He's swinging a ground ball to second. Taken there by Woodward and Plato to Alou and there's one away.
- 1:25:25Now about Harrelson coming up. He is 3 for 3 in this ball game. A single, a double and then spun his way on.
- 1:25:32Listen to the hand for Harrelson. His batting average for the season is 2-78.
- 1:25:39He turns around out of that right handed against the left handed Dick Kelly. He's a swish hitter so he's been batting left.
- 1:25:46His left handed batting average for the season is 3-0-3.
- 1:25:53Take it in for a call strike. His natural side is batting right handed.
- 1:25:58Kelly's turned him off with a fastball.
- 1:26:07Swinging a ground ball and it's going deep to Jordan on through for a base hit.
- 1:26:11Harrelson has four hits as he holds it first. That one was just by Boyer and just by Mingy through the hole in the left.
- 1:26:19But Harrelson has gone 4 for 4 and so he's joining Ed Charles, Jerry Grote and Tommy Davis as Mets who have had four hits in a game.
- 1:26:30Last night Davis did it for the second time this season.
- 1:26:35And he represents Goyard right on it first with one man out. Larry Stahl scheduled up but he's a left handed batter.
- 1:26:44Harrelson's batting average for the season goes up now to 2-81.
- 1:26:55Tommy Reynolds batting for Larry Stahl. In the month of July, Bud Harrelson has batted 4-86.
- 1:27:05And it's your west west from here playing righty lefty as he takes down his left hand batter Larry Stahl and sends up his right hand batter Tommy Reynolds.
- 1:27:13A right hander is up and throwing the ball in now for the Atlanta Braves.
- 1:27:26Reynolds hitting 187, two homers and four runs batted in.
- 1:27:40The score is tied here, the Mets 3 and the Braves 3 with the Mets batting in the bottom half of the seventh inning.
- 1:27:47Zalepa Lou comes over to hold against Bud Harrelson.
- 1:27:57Kelly ends from the waist taking the sign.
- 1:28:02Now the pitch to Reynolds, one hot and fouled out to the right side out of play.
- 1:28:06The Mets came from behind to tie the score in the bottom of the fifth when Bud Harrelson effected a drag bunt for a base hit, stole second and scored on Ed Cranebo's looping single to left.
- 1:28:23Tommy Davis is taking his cuts in the on deck circle.
- 1:28:28Harrelson leads it first as Kelly looks for the sign.
- 1:28:33Off the stretch now, pitch to Reynolds, one hot and it is knocked down at second by Woodward to throw the first and it's just time to get Reynolds.
- 1:28:44Harrelson moving on to second.
- 1:28:46Woody Woodward barely got to that ball, slammed between first and second.
- 1:28:50He got his left hander to knock it down, he was on the rim of the outfield grass when he scampered after it, picked it up and threw on Zalepa Lou at first to get Reynolds.
- 1:28:58Harrelson moves into scoring position at second base, two men out and Tommy Davis is coming up.
- 1:29:16Now Davis is going to be intentionally walked.
- 1:29:19The first base open, the pitch is outside for a ball.
- 1:29:23It's going to get to the next train, so it's a left hand batter.
- 1:29:28So it is an intentional walk being issued here to Tommy Davis.
- 1:29:32As the Mets are making a bid with two men out at the bottom of the seventh.
- 1:29:38Raymond Hernandez is up and throwing into bullpen now for the Braves.
- 1:29:41He's a left hander along with right hander Claude Raymond.
- 1:29:50Now ball four and Tommy Davis goes down to first, Harrelson holds it second and Craneful is coming up.
- 1:30:06So Craneful will try to hang in there against the left hander now to see what he can do about getting Harrelson in.
- 1:30:10He's singled, the left fielder's riding in at the bottom of the fifth.
- 1:30:14He's got a ball today, Craneful is one for two on a walk, hitting 315 for this season.
- 1:30:21Leonard's lead at first and second, left hander Dick Kelly with the pitch.
- 1:30:25And it is hit in the air to the left, Rico Tidy comes up and makes the catch with one hand.
- 1:30:30So the side is out, no runs, no hits, no walk, no errors, and two left at the end of seventh.
- 1:30:35The score is, Mets three and the Braves three.
- 1:30:39Now let's check out scores of other games.
- 1:30:42The Braves feel in Pittsburgh at the end of eight innings of play, the Pirates lead the Cincinnati Reds one to nothing.

- 1:35:22Fisher now heads for the dugout.
- 1:35:28The Braves have taken a four to three lead here in the top half of the eighth inning.

- 1:35:43All fans 60 years of age or older will be admitted for the service charge of 50 cents.
- 1:35:51That's Senior Citizens Day on Wednesday, July 19th.
- 1:36:08This is the final game of this homestand. It is the final game before the All-Star break, of course.
- 1:36:14The All-Star game will be played in Anaheim, California on Tuesday.
- 1:36:18The Met representative will be Tom Steaver. Representing the Braves will be Hank Aaron and Joe Tory.
- 1:36:24Denzel LaMasta wants to have been on the squad, but he came up with a full muscle in the rib cage and he has been replaced by Chris Short.

- 1:36:39Rico Cardi's up, nobody on, nobody out. Braves batting in the top of the eighth.
- 1:36:43Howell run it for the first pitch to the right-hand batter and it's low for a ball.
- 1:36:51Joe Tory is waiting around on deck now.
- 1:36:57Playing a foul ball, backing out of play, it's 1-1. Off the screen, behind the plate.
- 1:37:12Then it's 1-1 offering, lead up high. 2-1 to Rico Cardi.
- 1:37:31Now the 2-1 delivery. Right in there for a called strike two. It's 2-2.
- 1:37:46And the pitch. Brakes high and away. Out full at 3-2.
- 1:38:04And up takes the sign from Grote. This is a payoff pitch to Cardi. Hit on the ground towards Short. Charge by Harrelson gets the big hop, guns across the crane.
- 1:38:17Joe Tory is coming up. Hey, the Rhine Gold Chug-a-Mug holds 12 ounces of Rhine Gold Extra Dry.
- 1:38:24And it has a pull tab so that you don't need an opener. It's about the handiest way there is of quenching your thirst.
- 1:38:31Rhine Chug-a-Mug on special display to local stores in New York and New Jersey.
- 1:38:42Pitch is in for a called strike. Tory has been on base three consecutive times today. Single to drive and run in the first inning.
- 1:38:48Single to right in the fourth inning. Was hit by a pitch ball in the sixth inning.
- 1:38:54So he will be the starting catcher for the National League All-Star Team. Moat into that position by the players of the National League.
- 1:39:07Hit your ten for a called strike. This is a count to Tory.
- 1:39:29And the pitch. Fast ball low. Jack Crawford, the play down fire picker, that was going to be in the dirt and he wasn't too confident that Grote was going to handle it.
- 1:39:39And he was backpedaling out of the way. One and two.
- 1:39:51Pitch low and away and it's even now at two-two. On the All-Star Balloting the players vote. But they are not allowed to vote for players of their team.
- 1:40:14This will be a two-two delivery. Let up and it is lined to short off the glove of Harrelson. He slips down and trying to grab it and Tory is on it first.
- 1:40:23It's a base hit. It was a line shot. Harrelson made a backhand step, had the ball in the glove, but just off the glove and right onto the turf and it's a base hit.
- 1:40:34We're getting a base runner now coming in to run for Joe Tory. Bob Euker is running for Tory.
- 1:40:41Tory is still in trouble with the framed ankle that had him on crutches for ten days. So he is now out of action until the All-Star Game on Tuesday.
- 1:40:51Running for Tory at first base, number twelve. Bob Euker, number twelve. The Atlanta batter, third base batter, please. Boyer.
- 1:41:05Third boyer is one for three. Right hand batter up here now with the runners first and one man out. The Braves lead by a score of four to three.
- 1:41:19Linnef Jack's the runner. Here's the pitch. Low. Linnef and Boyer, of course, were teammates when both were with the Yankees.
- 1:41:41Off the stretch, the 1-0 pitch. Breaking ball high, it's 2-0. Jack Lamabe is up and throwing in the bullpen now for the Mets along with left-hander Don Shaw.
- 1:42:06Now the 2-0 pitch. Get on the ground to Tory. Taken by Harrelson over to Johnson. That's one. That's one to throw to first. That's two. A double play.
- 1:42:13Harrelson to Johnson to Craneville and the side is out. The Braves got a run on two hits. Nowhere is a non-left. The score in the middle of the eighth inning is the Braves four and the Mets three.

- 1:43:35The warm-ups have begun for the completion of that suspended game in Baltimore between the Orioles and the Yankees. It worked. No score at the end of 6. Chris Peterson is warming up for the New York Yankees and Sue Miller warming up for the Baltimore Orioles.
- 1:43:50Right here with the Braves leading by a run, Ron Swabota comes up to lead off for the Mets. Bob Euker stays in the ball game as the catcher for the Atlanta Braves. You'll bat in Joe Torre's spot in the batting water. He ran for Torre.
- 1:44:05Left-hander Dick Kelly is still the pitcher on the mound. The Mets try to battle back here in the bottom of the eighth trailing by a run. Swabota up and Ed Charles on deck. Kelly Fitch is high for a ball. Swabota struck outside the center and fouled out to the catcher. Nothing for three today.
- 1:44:321-0 delivery and it's iron away. 2-0.
- 1:44:57Now the pitch. Sex, swing, foul, ball and it goes 2-1 to Swabota.
- 1:45:11We'll be broadcasting the Mayor's Trophy game from Yankee Stadium on Wednesday night. There will be no telecast for the Mayor's Trophy game. All the proceeds go for the benefit of Stanlott Baseball in the Greater New York area. 2-1 delivery to Swabota and it's iron away.
- 1:45:31Three balls in one strike. At Forbes Field in Pittsburgh, the Cincinnati Reds have scored a run off Dennis Ryban in the top of the ninth to tie that game at 1-1. So it goes now to the bottom of the ninth. Jim Maloney is working in relief of Gary Nolan.
- 1:45:51As we approach the All-Star break, managers figure they can pull those starters like Maloney in there and use them in relief since they'll have the three days of the All-Star break in which to rest.
- 1:46:113-1 pitch. Popped up. At second base, Woody Woodward makes the call and the catch. Swabota's out. Here Charles is the batter. He's 1-3. He had a lead off homer in the bottom of the fourth.
- 1:46:35Charles is hitting 276th since coming to the Mets from the Kansas City Athletics.
- 1:46:46Graves four, Mets three.
- 1:46:54Here's a swing and a miss for strike one. Bob Johnson is waiting on deck.
- 1:47:11Now the strike one pitch. High for a ball. It's 1-1.
- 1:47:30Dick Kelly takes the sign, deals a pitch. Curve ball. It catches an outside corner. It's 1-2.
- 1:47:44Charles back into the batter's lock.
- 1:47:58Kelly takes the sign from Bob Uecker and the 1-2 pitch. Swung on. As he strikes out, Charles first strike out to Kelly. Two away for the Mets, batting in the eighth and Bob Johnson's coming up. He's 1-3. He's a right-hand batter.
- 1:48:12This has been a ballgame in which the lead has changed hands several times.
- 1:48:20Willie Stardill has homered in the bottom of the ninth for the Pittsburgh Pirates to win the ballgame by a score of 2-1 over the Cincinnati Reds and to give Dennis Ryband his fifth win of the year.
- 1:48:30Ryband is five and forward with home run number 12 for Willie Stardill. He hit it off Jim Maloney working in relief.
- 1:48:37Playing a foul ball. Back to first out of play. Going to the bottom half of the eighth inning at County Mac City. And just now in the bottom half of the eighth inning, the Phils have picked up two runs.
- 1:48:50So it is now the Cardinals 3 and the Phils 3. It's out at 3-3. Nelson Brow is working in relief with Larry Duster.
- 1:48:59Richie Allen hit his eleventh homer of the season in the eighth with one on for the Phils. A pull even with the league leading card. Here's a strike one pitch to Bob Johnson.
- 1:49:09On the ground is Short. Big hop up to Dennis Minkie. Cross to Philippa Lue and the side is out in order.
- 1:49:15A run's no hit, no errors, none left. At the end of eight full innings, the score is the Braves 4, the Mets 3. And now here's a word from Rheingold.
- 1:49:24For 60 years Malcolm Sharp has been taking New Yorkers for a ride.
- 1:49:29You know why they need the road windy and since, but you keep us from racing the carriage.
- 1:49:38I remember one time I had Diamond Jim in the cab. Race toward Charlie Simmons all the way down to Gramercy Park.
- 1:49:45That was easy then. They want more than just a ride now. They want memories, romance, got freedom elegant.
- 1:49:54But you're going to be around for a while in New York. You got to give people what they want.
- 1:49:59You've got to know what you're doing and you've got to be good because in this town either you have it or you don't.
- 1:50:07Same thing's true of beer. There are 302 different brands of beer trying to make it in New York.
- 1:50:15But the only one that's made it to the top is the rich, dry lager Rheingold. Rheingold.
- 1:50:23In this town either you have it or you don't.
- 1:50:30The Atlanta Braves are coming up in the top of the ninth with Dennis Menke to lead off facing Howe runners. Menke is one for three.
- 1:50:38In Cleveland in the ninth inning Ken McMullen is at a three run homer for the Senators and Frank Howard is at a solo homer.
- 1:50:44Howard's second homer of the ball game. His 24th hit in the ninth inning. Pitch is low now to Menke.
- 1:50:50Frank Howard leaves the Major Leagues in home run with his 23rd and 24th this afternoon in the first game of a double hitter in Cleveland.
- 1:50:59Senators still batting. Here's a swing and a ground ball to short. A big hop up to Harrelson and a cross now to Craneville.
- 1:51:06One away. We pause for station identification. This is the New York Mets baseball network.
- 1:51:12This is the bright sound in radio. WGY, a General Electric Broadcasting Company station at 810 on your dial in Schenectady, New York.
- 1:51:25Bob Murphy and Ralph Kanner at Chase Stadium in New York. Woody Woodward's up. Reynolds fits in there for a called strike.
- 1:51:34Woodward is nothing but three in this game. The Braves four and the Mets three. Braves batting in the top of the ninth.
- 1:51:48The ball is punted foul on the third baseline. Woodward trying to conceal his punt and beat it out for a base hit.
- 1:51:56Two strike count. When the Mets resume National League play after the all-star break, it will be at Crosley Field in Cincinnati on Thursday night
- 1:52:06with a Twinnite double header. We'll be broadcasting both games to the Twinniters. Of course, all games for the New York Mets are broadcast.
- 1:52:15Reynolds takes the time from Grote. Two strike pitch to Woodward is a curve ball. A little high and a little tight.
- 1:52:28It's backing out of the way. It's one and two. Pitcher Dick Kelly is on deck. Reynolds one-two offing. In there for a called strike three.
- 1:52:47Reynolds gets his first strike out. Woodward caught looking and that will bring up Dick Kelly with two away.
- 1:52:55We'd like to look ahead to the bottom of the ninth. The Mets are scheduled to send up Jerry Grote, the pitcher, and Bud Harrelson.
- 1:53:01So Manager Westrom can be expected to go to his bench where he has right-handers such as Ken Boyer, Leon Jones, Jerry Buchak available there.
- 1:53:17Dick Kelly watches the pitch inside for a ball. He is four for thirteen. Although he's a left-hand pitcher, he's a right-hand batter.
- 1:53:30Low for a ball.
- 1:53:43Reynolds two-oh offing to Kelly right in there for a called strike. He was taking it two and one.
- 1:53:57Down ball foul. Back of first base. Out of play. Counts even now at two-two.
- 1:54:20He's playing at a Mets as Kelly threw his bat at the ball and he traveled all the way out about shortstop. Two strikeouts for Reynolds in the inning as he got to side in order.
- 1:54:28No runs, no hits, no errors, none left. In the middle of the ninth the score is the Braves four and the Mets three. Now here's a word from Ryngo.
- 1:54:37You can't put the wool over their eyes. You can't get the public around here. You can't put one over on these guys. They'll pop you right out on your ear.
- 1:54:53In this town either you have it or you don't. Either you're a pro or you won't get very far. Hey!
- 1:55:07There are 302 beers trying to make it in New York from all over. But only one beer has made it to the top. The rich dry lager Ryngo. In this town either you have it or you don't.
- 1:55:21Either you're a pro or you won't get very far. Either you have it or you don't. Ryngo.
- 1:55:42In the first game of the doubleheader in Cleveland the Washington Senators got five runs in the top of the ninth to lead the Cleveland Indians by a score of eight to five. And in Chicago in the first game of the doubleheader, pitcher Jim Cotter of the Minnesota Twins has homered in the sixth with one on.
- 1:55:56The Twins lead the Chicago Whites on five to one going to the bottom of the sixth. Right here the Atlanta Braves lead the Mets by one run. Jerry Grote is coming up to lead off for the Mets. And Leon Jones is swinging back in the on deck circle to bat for Hal Runniff.
- 1:56:13Another fine relief performance this afternoon here by Hal Runniff who gave up only one hit in the last two innings and that was a line shot in and out of the glove of Harrell from the shortstop by Joe Tory in the eighth inning.
- 1:56:28The Mets are battling back here in the bottom half of the ninth inning. Left hander Dick Shelley with the pitch to the right hand batter and it's in there for a called strike.
- 1:56:36Now a chant of let's go Mets.
- 1:56:41And a right hander Raymond Hernandez, a left hander, working in the Braves bullpen here in the ninth.
- 1:56:51Strike one delivery and it's high for a ball, one and one.
- 1:57:00Dick Johnson worked the first six innings of this ball game and was charged with three runs on seven hits. He struck out three and he walked one. And Dick Shelley came on to pitch the seventh and eighth and he's pitching the ninth here.
- 1:57:12He took the lead in the eighth and Shelley is a pitcher of record. His record for the season is one win and seven losses.
- 1:57:31One one pitch to Grote. Hung on and missed it one and two.
- 1:57:49Shelley is taking the sign from Bob Euker.
- 1:57:55And he takes a long time for Grote. He backs out of the batter's box.
- 1:58:03Now he's back in and here's a one two offering. Hung on and this is Shelley gets his second strike out.
- 1:58:11And the challenge will come up to bat now for Hal Runniff.
- 1:58:25He is hitting two oh one. Three homers and fourteen runs battered in.
- 1:58:37Bud Harrelson is on deck. Harrelson is four for four.
- 1:58:42And Harrelson has his season batting average up to two eighty one.
- 1:58:51Shelley getting set to work now to right hand batter Cleon Jones.
- 1:58:58Pick is low for a ball.
- 1:59:12Pittsburgh got only three hits off Nolan and Maloney.
- 1:59:18But one of them was on homo by Starjowl in the bottom of the ninth to win it. Here's a pitch in for a call strike to Cleon Jones at one and one.
- 1:59:38Braves scored first here this afternoon in the first inning but the Mets tied it in the third and went ahead in the fourth.
- 1:59:48And Henry Allen home it in the eighth to make it a four three ball game and that's the score right now.
- 1:59:53Atlanta on top. Mets batting in the bottom of the ninth.
- 1:59:57Left hander Dick Shelley with the pitch.
- 2:00:02Backhand by Woodward he's supposed to break the end time. Jones is grounded out.
- 2:00:06And now how is being called back and Jerry Buczak got a bat for him.
- 2:00:11Buczak will bat for Harrelson. Harrelson went four for four today but with two men out of nobody on.
- 2:00:18Manager Wes Westrom is gambling on getting a long ball from Buczak.
- 2:00:27So it is Buczak batting for Harrelson.
- 2:00:39Buczak has had seven home runs this year and 18 runs batted in hitting 227.
- 2:00:46Now manager Billy Hitchcock is going out to the mound to have a word with his left hander Dick Shelley.
- 2:00:54Blaisley four three. Mets batting with two men out of nobody on in the bottom of the ninth.
- 2:01:04Now Hitchcock turns and comes back to the dugout.
- 2:01:33Buczak settles himself in.
- 2:01:38Shelley steps up on the rubber to take the time from catcher Bob Uecker.
- 2:01:47Tommy Reynolds is waiting on deck. Here's the pitch and it's high for a ball.
- 2:02:00Shelley has given up only one base hit since she came on in the seventh inning.
- 2:02:07That was a ground single to left by Bud Harrelson in the seventh.
- 2:02:13Tommy Davis was intentionally walking that and he hears a swing and a miss. It's one-one.
- 2:02:21He gets that intentional walk. Dick Shelley has retired. Six consecutive batters.
- 2:02:38One-one pitch. In there for a call. Strike two.
- 2:02:42So with two men out in the bottom half of the ninth inning, nobody on base.
- 2:02:47The Braves leading four to three. The count to Buczak goes to one ball and two strikes.
- 2:03:12Two and two pitch. Moved him back. It's two and two.
- 2:03:20Buczak reaches down and gets a handful of dirt now.
- 2:03:23Shelley taking the return throw, walks back behind the rubber.
- 2:03:29Mops the ball in the glove and takes out his cap and mops a little perspiration.
- 2:03:33Buczak is back in and waiting.
- 2:03:36Counts even at two-two with two men out.
- 2:03:39Shelley steps up onto the rubber to take the sign.
- 2:03:46Buczak swinging the batter as he waits.
- 2:03:48Now the two-two offering.
- 2:03:51Fung out and hits deep to right.
- 2:03:53And going back to the wall is Aaron and it's going, going.
- 2:03:56A home run for Shelley Buczak.
- 2:04:00The tie is the score at four-four.
- 2:04:06Shelley Buczak with his eighth home run of the season on a two-two pitch and it's a brand new ballgame at four-four.
- 2:04:26Henry Buczak with his eighth home run. His last one came on the 11th of June at Chicago off Turkheisenstein.
- 2:04:36And manager Wes Westrom got the long ball that he gambled for.
- 2:04:41Now Tommy Reynolds is up.
- 2:04:43Shelley's pitch. High football.
- 2:04:46And that's it tied in here in the bottom half of the ninth inning.
- 2:04:50And the other thing, statistically Jack Fisher is off the hook. He left the game at pitcher of record on the short side.
- 2:04:58He is off the hook now as it's a four-four ballgame in the bottom of the ninth.
- 2:05:03And now this crowd is really coming out. They'd like to see the next team going. Two men out.
- 2:05:11It's Shelley with a 1-0 pitch to Reynolds and it's low.
- 2:05:16Shelley goes behind two and 0.
- 2:05:19And a two-two pitch hit by right-hand batter Jerry Buczak and he hit it over the right field fence.
- 2:05:24Right over the 371-foot side in front of the scoreboard.
- 2:05:28Henry Allen backpedaled to about the middle of the warning track.
- 2:05:32And then at the last moment watched it fail over the fence.
- 2:05:38A 2-0 pitch to Reynolds. Whoa, it's 3-0.
- 2:05:43Ron Taylor is up and throwing in the net ball fence.
- 2:05:46Double barrel action still in the braze ball fence. Right-hander Claude Ramon.
- 2:05:50Left-hander Ramon Hernandez.
- 2:05:54This will be a 3-0 pitch to Reynolds.
- 2:05:57He was taking it. It's 3-1.
- 2:05:59Tommy Davis is on deck.
- 2:06:03Door side 4-4 on the bottom of the ninth.
- 2:06:09Jerry Buczak with a pinch homer to keep the mad hopes alive.
- 2:06:16This will be a 3-1 pitch to Reynolds.
- 2:06:22He watches low and he walks.
- 2:06:27Second walk-in hit by Kelly and that's going to get Kelly out of the ball again.
- 2:06:32Claude Ramon is going to be brought in here to pitch to Tommy Davis.
- 2:06:39And it's a Billy Hitchcock. He's on his way to the mound.
- 2:06:44He's already made the sign to the ball fence with the right-hander.
- 2:06:49Claude Ramon will be coming in here to make his 31st appearance.
- 2:06:54He worked night before last, but two innings in which he allowed Noron to only one hit.
- 2:06:59As a matter of fact, he hasn't allowed a run in his last one, two, three, four, five, six, seven times out.
- 2:07:06The last time he allowed a run was on June 20th at Los Angeles when he worked two-thirds of an inning and gave up one run on two hits.
- 2:07:13That's the only run he's given up since he came from Houston to Atlanta for a Wade-Bassing game on the 16th of June.
- 2:07:23So he's going to come in here to pitch to Tommy Davis.
- 2:07:26He's just now getting into the electric cart down in the left field corner.
- 2:07:31And it's a Billy Hitchcock. He's talking to Dick Kelly.
- 2:07:34It looks as though Kelly might get out with a victory, but Jerry Buczak took care of that with his pinch homer over the right field fence.
- 2:07:41Kelly cannot possibly be the winning pitcher as he goes out of here now.
- 2:07:47Statistically, a temporary beneficiary of the home run is Hal Runnup.
- 2:07:57If the Mets were to get a run and pull it out here in the bottom of the ninth, Runnup would then be winning the two.
- 2:08:04Two and two-thirds for Kelly. One run on two hits. So he got two and walked through one of them intentionally.
- 2:08:19First game is over in Cleveland. The Washington Senators defeating the Cleveland Indians 8-5.
- 2:08:38Dick Lyons gets the win in relief. Bailey takes the loss in relief.
- 2:08:42Frank Howard hits two homers his 23rd and 24th of the season. He leads the majors in that department.
- 2:08:47Ken McMullen had a three-run homer for Washington. Duke Simpson-Max Albers also homers.
- 2:08:55In the seventh inning, the Yankees didn't score and neither did Baltimore, and the resumption of that game suspended last night, the end of sixth.
- 2:09:06The pinch homer by Buczak was the first pinch homer by a Mets player this season.
- 2:09:11And it came at a very appropriate time for the Mets because they had gone about as far as they could go.
- 2:09:17Two men out, nobody on, down one run with a 2-2 count.
- 2:09:22So Kelly was one pitch away from victory if the pitch had been a strike.
- 2:09:29The Mets now have a base runner at first who represents winning runs, Tommy Reynolds.
- 2:09:34Tommy Davis is coming up. He grounded out the first base in the first inning on a hit-and-run play that moved the runner up.
- 2:09:40He's single to drive in around in the third. He fouled out to the catcher in the fifth and he was intentionally walked into seventh.
- 2:09:46Davis is batting 3-0-8 for the season. Last night he went 4-4-4 and got the thousandth hit of his career. Now he has 1,001.
- 2:09:56So Davis is out on right-hand pitcher Claude Ramon. He's working to him.
- 2:10:06Davis has 10 homers and 42 runs batted in.
- 2:10:11A can of let's go Mets. Two men out and a runner at first bottom half of the ninth inning. Ramon is up in fact.
- 2:10:17Pitch is flung in and fouled off right off the end of the bat into the Mets dugout and it rebounds out where it's fielded by Yogi Berra on the coaching lines at first.
- 2:10:25A strike one count to Tommy Davis.
- 2:10:29Now it's over. The first and the metals get back safely. Ed Cranebould is waiting on deck.
- 2:10:54Ramon sets up. Goes to first and Reynolds dives back in safely on a close play.
- 2:11:03Philippe Ballou thought he might have the audit. He made the sweeping dug and then started to cross the infield.
- 2:11:09This fella could have seen umpire making the save sign. Reynolds diving back in to grab that bag with his bare hands.
- 2:11:23Scores tied 4-4. Now again a throw over to first.
- 2:11:33Rod Ramon trying to keep a short order on Tommy Reynolds.
- 2:11:41The runner at first and the score down to bottom of the ninth there's always the possibility of the manager going to the hit and run.
- 2:11:51A looper out of the right center field and coming on is Aaron and he can't get it and Reynolds is going to third.
- 2:11:57There's the throw and it is taken by Boyle not in time. Reynolds is at third base and Tommy Davis has a looping single to right.
- 2:12:04Setting up one at first and third for the Mets and left hand batter Ed Cranebould is coming up.
- 2:12:11Tommy Davis might very well have broken the bat on that looper.
- 2:12:17Henry Aaron came full tilt he couldn't get to it. Woody Woodward was going back he couldn't get to it.
- 2:12:25Now Billy Hitchcock is coming out again. We all want his left hander I imagine Ramon Hernandez to pitch to Cranebould.
- 2:12:35Ramon Hernandez is throwing feverishly down there in the bullpen he is a left hander.
- 2:12:41Now Hitchcock arrives at the mound to talk to his right hand pitcher Claude Ramon.
- 2:12:47See what Ramon has to say about the situation and how he works to Cranebould before making any decision. None has been made yet.
- 2:12:59Might very well want to walk Cranebould and pitch to Swabota.
- 2:13:05The run that would be moved up to second wouldn't mean anything as the run at third is the one that's the winning run with two men out.
- 2:13:12Swabota is on deck. Swabota today has gone 0 for 4. Cranebould today is 1 for 3 in a walk and he's driven in a run and it's going to be the intentional walk to Cranebould.
- 2:13:24So that's the strategy he arrives at. He will walk Cranebould and pitch to Swabota.
- 2:13:33An intentional pass is being issued that will load the bases with two men out and bring up Ron Swabota.
- 2:13:51So Cranebould gets rid of the bat goes to first that moves Tommy Davis up to second. Tommy Reynolds holds at third. The bases are loaded for Ron Swabota.
- 2:13:59He goes back to the top step of the doigot. He's talking to manager Wes Westrom. Now comes back up.
- 2:14:05Swabota batting with the bases loaded.
- 2:14:12The score is 5-4-4. The men trying to pull it out here in the bottom half of the ninth inning.
- 2:14:21Right hand pitcher, Claude Raymond working the right hand batter Ron Swabota.
- 2:14:29Raymond works straight away taking the side from catcher Bob Euker and now he backs off the rubber and looks around.
- 2:14:35There are runners everywhere he looks. First, second and third. Now he sets up on the rubber again to take the side.
- 2:14:41Here are runners leading. First, second and third. Here is the pitch to Ron Swabota. It's high for a ball. Ed Charles is waiting on deck.
- 2:14:52But one way or the other it's up to Ron Swabota right here. It's the winning run at third and there are two men out.
- 2:15:05Reynolds at third, Davis at second, Crane Bull at first. This is a 1-0 pitch.
- 2:15:11And there's a check swing that did not go through. It's a ball, 2-0.
- 2:15:16A half swing and Jack Crawford said he didn't take it far enough. So now Raymond has gone behind 2-0.
- 2:15:27Swabota. Now it's a play. Now measures his stand.
- 2:15:33Now Raymond has good control normally. He's a controlled pitcher.
- 2:15:39And here is the 2-0 offering. Outside he goes behind 3-0.
- 2:15:44You can expect your button that Swabota will be taking this pitch. He's looking down at the side now at Charlie Parker.
- 2:15:52Raymond has walked on the eighth man in 41 innings. The bases are loaded.
- 2:15:58Two men out. Coitard, 44. The count, three balls and no strikes.
- 2:16:03To Ron Swabota. Raymond taking a side now from Uker.
- 2:16:14Runners lead 3, second and third. The 3-0 pitch. In there for a ball strike. It's 3-1.
- 2:16:24Swabota rakes it down to get a handful of dirt.
- 2:16:32And now Charlie Parker is coming down to be sure that Swabota knows what this sign is.
- 2:16:38Swabota hadn't looked at him for a while and Charlie was screaming down there to get his attention.
- 2:16:43The count is 3-1 to Swabota. The bases are loaded.
- 2:16:49So it's up to the manager to decide whether to have him take this pitch or turn him loose to swing if he likes it.
- 2:16:58Swabota Raymond. Closed the rubber. Takes a side from Uker. That's baserunners leading at 3, second and third.
- 2:17:05Here's a 3-1 pitch. And he walked him. The ball game is over.
- 2:17:10Swabota gets a run out of there. And as the winning run comes in, Reynolds crosses the plate.
- 2:17:16And this ball game is over. Reynolds was put on there by Dick Kelly, who becomes the losing pitcher.
- 2:17:23Ryan Swabota watched the 3-1 pitch over and threw the walk.
- 2:17:28He is credited with a run out at the end and the Mets pull it out in the bottom of the ninth after Jerry Buczak had a pinch home and he keeps the Mets hope to lie.
- 2:17:36So the Mets win it by a score of 5-4 to close out the home stand and take them up to the all-star break.
- 2:17:44In the bottom half of the ninth inning, the New York Mets two runs on two hits.
- 2:17:52And there were two men out when the winning run was scored. We'll be back in a moment with the final summary and totals.
- 2:17:59Right now the final score is the Mets 5, the Braves 4. We'll be back with more about the Mets in one moment.
- 2:18:06There was a time early last season when the New York Mets won their first game of the year from the Atlanta Braves when Billy O'Dell, pitching that time for the Braves,
- 2:18:17walked Ron Swabota to force in the winning run. Well, it happened again just a moment ago when Ron Swabota threw a walk with the bases loaded to force in the winning run.
- 2:18:26Tommy Reynolds crossing the plate. Dick Kelly takes the loss. And Hal Runneth gets the win for the New York Mets.
- 2:18:32His third is coming up from the Yankees at three wins and a save. It was a lulu of a ballgame, the final game of the home stand and the one that takes the Mets up to the all-star break,
- 2:18:42as the Atlanta Braves scored in the first inning off Jack Fisher. But then the Mets came back as they picked up one in the third inning and another in the fourth.
- 2:18:51But then Philippa Lew had a two-run homer for the Braves to put them out in front in the fifth.
- 2:18:56The Mets battled right back to get one to tie it up when Brad Harrelson got his third hit by dragging a bunch the whole second and was knocked in by Ed Cranebough.
- 2:19:05So it was a 3-3 ballgame and some long shots of being hit off Jack Fisher, who was not at his very best today.
- 2:19:10And Hank Aaron led off the eighth inning with a homer to put the Braves out in front four to three and Fisher went out of the ballgame at that point and Runneth was brought on.
- 2:19:18The ballgame went through the bottom half of the ninth inning, 4-3 Braves, and two men were out when Jerry Buczek was brought up to bat for Harrelson.
- 2:19:26Despite the fact that Harrelson was 4-4-4, manager Weston figured he had to get a man up there who might hit the ball out.
- 2:19:32What Jerry Buczek did just that on a 2-2 pitch, he hit it out over the right field fence to tie the score.
- 2:19:38And then Tommy Reynolds drew a walk and that was all for Kelly. As Claude Ramon was brought on, Tommy Davis got a base hit.
- 2:19:46Ed Cranebough was purposely passed to load the bases and then Ron Swaboda drew the walks that forced in the winning run and of course the roadie gets a run back again.
- 2:19:56So the New York Mets have closed out this home stand against the top teams in the National League on the stand with a record of eight wins and six losses.
- 2:20:04The win today by the Mets over the Braves is the seventh. It is the most wins the Mets have ever had over the Braves in any season.
- 2:20:11Previously six was the top number for the Mets to win over the Braves in a year.
- 2:20:16So the final totals in this ball game, four of the Mets five runs on ten hits and no errors. For the Braves four runs, 11 hits and no errors.
- 2:20:24For the Braves, run up is the winner. Kelly is the loser. The Mets pulled it out by scoring two in the bottom half of the ninth inning to win it five to four.
