Transcript
- 0:06Father I want to thank you so much for your goodness
- 0:08thank you Lord as you have guided us to this
- 0:13point it's so amazing to see through these years
- 0:16how each week each letter each book that you
- 0:22have guided us to share and to talk about is
- 0:26so strategic and helping us as your people be
- 0:30prepared not only to know you completely, Lord
- 0:33Jesus, and to grow in true faith into the mature
- 0:38manhood, but to really help us to see what's
- 0:41happening around us. So we are asking in your
- 0:44providence, again, to guide us in this truth.
- 0:47I pray that your word speaks louder than anything
- 0:51that any of us could say. and that it would really
- 0:57hit hard and hit home to the heart that we may
- 1:01boldly proclaim the truth without apology, and
- 1:12that we would stand firm in the faith, holding
- 1:15fast to the doctrine, and to speak boldly. against
- 1:24those who speak falsely against you. Lord, we
- 1:28do praise you and thank you in Jesus' name. Amen.
- 1:34False teachers, the way to destruction is the
- 1:36message of part one. We're going to be dealing
- 1:38with the first three verses of chapter two, but
- 1:40we're going to start off in chapter one, verse
- 1:4316, and read through chapter two, verse three.
- 1:46There's a reason why, because of the word but.
- 1:49The word but is in the original, and it's taking
- 1:53us back to what Peter had said previously. All
- 2:00right? So let's pay attention to that, and then
- 2:02we'll get in. It says, He received honor and
- 2:20glory from God the Father. The voice was born
- 2:23to him by the majestic glory. This is my beloved
- 2:27Son with whom I am well pleased. We ourselves
- 2:30heard this very voice born from heaven. For we
- 2:35were with him on the holy mountain. and we have
- 2:39the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which
- 2:43you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp
- 2:46shining in a dark place. Until the day dawns
- 2:50and the morning star rises in your hearts, knowing
- 2:53this first of all, that no prophecy of scripture
- 2:56comes from someone's own interpretation, and
- 3:02no prophecy was ever produced by the will of
- 3:06man, spoke from God as they were carried along
- 3:10by the Holy Spirit. But false prophets also rose
- 3:15among the people, just as there will be false
- 3:20teachers among you who will secretly bring in
- 3:23destructive heresies, even denying the Master
- 3:26who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift
- 3:29destruction, and many will follow their sensuality.
- 3:34And because of them, the way of truth will be
- 3:37blasphemed, and in their greed they will exploit
- 3:40you with false words. Their condemnation from
- 3:44long ago is not idle, and their destruction is
- 3:47not asleep. And I will tell you, the rest of
- 3:48chapter 2 just gives you examples of how God
- 3:53destroyed. And as we get through chapter 2, it's
- 3:59really a clear, concise... condemnation and judgment
- 4:05upon those who are false teachers. And so we
- 4:08will get through that, but not today. It'll be
- 4:11next week. So let's deal with the first principle.
- 4:14It's a question, really. What do we do concerning
- 4:18false teachers? Because many times we read about
- 4:22or someone talks about false teachers, but they
- 4:25never really say, well, what do you do with them?
- 4:28We are commanded to beware and watchful. false
- 4:32teachers, Matthew 7 .15. We are to warn the family
- 4:37of God of false teachers, Acts 20 .29. We are
- 4:41to expose false teachers, Ephesians 5 .11. We
- 4:45are to avoid false teachers, Romans 16 .17, and
- 4:49we are to rebuke false teachers, 1 Timothy 5
- 4:53.20. This is not only for the preacher, this
- 4:55is for every believer who comes across a person
- 4:58who speaks falsely. against Christ and his scripture,
- 5:03against God. So in Romans 16, 17 through 18,
- 5:07it says, I appeal to you, brothers, to watch
- 5:10out for those who cause divisions and create
- 5:13obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have
- 5:19been taught. Do you hear that? Romans 16, 17.
- 5:25I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those
- 5:27who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary
- 5:31to the doctrine that you have been taught. Avoid
- 5:35them. For such persons do not serve our Lord
- 5:41Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk
- 5:47and flattery, they deceive the hearts of the
- 5:51naive. I'll say it this way, as my son Nicholas
- 5:55said when he was much younger, Dad, not everything
- 5:58that's Christian is Christian. Colossians 2 .8,
- 6:04see to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy
- 6:08and empty deceit according to human tradition,
- 6:12according to the elemental spirits of the world,
- 6:15and not according to Christ. And there is the
- 6:19key there. what Peter is saying here, but false
- 6:25prophets. That literally just means false prophets.
- 6:30Pseudo -prophetes is the term. Also, arose among
- 6:35the people. So even in the Old Testament, there
- 6:39were those who claimed to be prophets of God,
- 6:41messengers of God, speaking for God, that rose
- 6:44among the people. We know because we've seen
- 6:48it. In the Old Testament, or we read it in the
- 6:51Old Testament, not seen it. Read it in the Old
- 6:54Testament. As a matter of fact, those group of
- 6:58people and their families ended up being swallowed
- 7:01by the earth. So, one who speaks on behalf of
- 7:08God as if he is speaking for God. Just as there
- 7:13will be false teachers among you. Interesting
- 7:17term. Literally, false teachers just means false
- 7:21teachers. There is no other term. And I will
- 7:25show you that term in a minute. Among you. So
- 7:29there will be false teachers among us. And we
- 7:31see that all the time. And young people want
- 7:34genuine faith. That's what they want. They want
- 7:36genuine Christianity. And they're like, why are
- 7:39there so many divisions? Because Jesus said there
- 7:43will be. And so does Peter. There will be false
- 7:47teachers among you who will secretly bring in,
- 7:50who will introduce secretly and craftily is the
- 7:55term here. Destructive heresies. Now, a lot of
- 7:59times we think about this word destructive heresy.
- 8:01Destructive is destruction by discord or contention.
- 8:05That's literally what destruction means. But
- 8:07what's interesting is this word heresies. This
- 8:11word heresies is translated As opinion meant
- 8:15to bring ruin. So I want you to hear that. And
- 8:20heresy is an opinion. Not a clear understanding
- 8:24of biblical doctrine. It is an opinion of biblical
- 8:29doctrine. And so there is no such thing. God
- 8:33doesn't care about your opinion. I know you've
- 8:35heard me say that before. God cares about his
- 8:38truth. And there is definitive truth. One of
- 8:43the, I think, the most difficult things is this
- 8:46idea that is going around within the church that
- 8:50the primary stay primary, but the secondary are
- 8:55secondary. Let me make it clear. All things concerning
- 9:00God are primary. We just need to end up being
- 9:06taught by him and growing in the truth so that
- 9:08we understand the secondaries. And that's important.
- 9:14All things concerning God is primary. If you
- 9:16say one thing wrong about God, God will judge
- 9:22you. That's why we as preachers are held to a
- 9:25very high standard. We will give an account for
- 9:30everything we say to you. And that's one of the
- 9:34reasons when I screw up or I mess up, I apologize.
- 9:39I ask for forgiveness. Like trans -positiation.
- 9:45It's trans -substantiation. How I can forget
- 9:48that in a moment, it has to be diabetes. That's
- 9:51all I can think of. It's so funny. That was so
- 9:57true. You guys know. Even denying the Master.
- 10:03who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift
- 10:07destruction. We would say, like, swift destruction
- 10:09is when? Remember, a lifetime for a human is
- 10:12not very long in the grand scheme of eternity.
- 10:15It comes swiftly. And many will follow, will
- 10:19comply, will yield with, or yield to their sensuality.
- 10:24Now, many would think this word, sensuality,
- 10:27is just something that deals with lust. Actually,
- 10:32the list is quite long concerning sensuality.
- 10:34So let me give it to you. Unbridled lust, excessive
- 10:39licentiousness, lasciviousness, wantonness, outrageousness,
- 10:48shamelessness, and insolence. That's what sensuality
- 10:54is. So to put it in a nutshell, sensuality is
- 10:57all wickedness. That's what sensuality is. They
- 11:03will cause many to comply with and yield to their
- 11:09wickedness. And because of them, the way of truth
- 11:15will be blasphemed. Is not the gospel in our
- 11:19day blasphemed? I mean, we can leave some of
- 11:26that up to purpose -driven church and purpose
- 11:29-driven life, can we not? Along with all these
- 11:33other ideas of what they think the gospel is.
- 11:38And in their greed, in their desire for more
- 11:41and covetousness, they will exploit you. They
- 11:46will use you for gain. I want you to pay attention
- 11:53to that. It's all those nice little TV preachers
- 11:55that we pay attention to. They keep begging you
- 11:58for money. Right? Be careful. Look what it says
- 12:06here. They will exploit you with false words,
- 12:09with molded or formed. In other words, they will
- 12:13say the words in such a way that it's deceptive.
- 12:17They aren't genuine words. And the word words
- 12:21is logos. Their condemnation, their penal judgment
- 12:24from long ago is not idle, is not inactive, and
- 12:28is not in delay. And their destruction is not
- 12:32asleep. It doesn't linger. So what is a false
- 12:37teacher? Pseudo -dikastelas is the word here.
- 12:46Pseudo -dikastelas. The word pseudo means a lying,
- 12:52deceitful, or false teacher. One who purposes
- 12:58to lie, deceive, and speak falsely about God
- 13:01and his word. So let me give you the first extreme.
- 13:07The charismatics. And I know that there are several
- 13:13charismatic churches around here. But I had to
- 13:18think of how would I present the... one extreme
- 13:21and the other extreme, and for us to be able
- 13:24to narrow down the reality of biblical truth.
- 13:27And that's the only way I can think of is through
- 13:30the Assemblies of God, the AOG. This is their
- 13:35Statements of Fundamental Truths. Number two,
- 13:39and you can go to their website, Assemblies of
- 13:43God denomination, their website. The one true
- 13:49God has revealed himself as the eternal self
- 13:52-existent I am, the creator of heaven and earth
- 13:55and the redeemer of mankind. He has further revealed
- 13:59himself as embodying the principles of relationship.
- 14:06And association as father, hear that word, association.
- 14:10As father, son, and the Holy Spirit. The adorable
- 14:15Godhead, subheading. Terms defined to terms,
- 14:21trinity, and persons as related to the Godhead
- 14:24while not found in the Scripture are words in
- 14:27harmony with the Scripture whereby we may convey
- 14:30to others our immediate understanding of the
- 14:33doctrine of Christ. Respecting the being of God
- 14:38as distinguished from God's many and Lord's many,
- 14:43we therefore may speak with propriety. of the
- 14:50Lord our God, who is one Lord, as a trinity or
- 14:55as one being of three persons, and still be absolutely
- 14:59scriptural. Number two, the distinction and relationship
- 15:06of the Godhead. Christ taught a distinction of
- 15:10persons in the Godhead, which he expressed in
- 15:13specific terms of relationship. Do you hear that?
- 15:18Not that Christ expressed specific terms of the
- 15:22Godhead, but that Jesus only spoke concerning
- 15:26the Father as relationship. Not as the person,
- 15:33just as relationship. As Father, Son, and Holy
- 15:37Spirit, but that this distinction and relationship
- 15:41as to its mode, there's the key word, is inscrutable.
- 15:48and incomprehensible because it's unexplained.
- 15:51Do you hear the word mode there? See, what AOG
- 15:55is not telling you is they preach and teach modalism
- 16:00under the guise of Trinitarian language as to
- 16:07its mode, secretly and craftily. Biblical view,
- 16:16Westminster Shorter Catechism, there is three
- 16:18persons in the Godhead, the Father, the Son,
- 16:21and the Holy Ghost, the Holy Spirit, and these
- 16:23three are one God, the same substance, equal
- 16:26in power and glory, not just relationship. That's
- 16:35question and answer number five. Matthew 3, 16
- 16:39and 17, and when Jesus was baptized, You see
- 16:58the triune God in one place. The Father, the
- 17:05Spirit, and the Son. Number five concerning AOG's
- 17:12doctrinal beliefs. The salvation of man. Pay
- 17:16attention to this. This is remarkable. This should
- 17:20be offensive in reality. The conditions of salvation.
- 17:26Salvation is received through repentance toward
- 17:31God and faith toward Jesus Christ. Forget about
- 17:42Ephesians 2. It's through faith. Forget about
- 17:47the reality of the work of the Holy Spirit. Wherever
- 17:50the wind blows, no one knows where the wind comes
- 17:52from, but it comes and goes as He pleases. We
- 17:54read that in John 3. Forget about that. It's
- 17:57actually, you're saved through repentance now.
- 18:00All you've got to do is repent. Let me continue.
- 18:08Salvation is received. In addition, by the washing
- 18:12of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit,
- 18:15being justified by grace through faith, there
- 18:19it is, craftily, men become heirs of God according
- 18:23to the hope of eternal life. Isn't that nice?
- 18:29It's got that nice little bit of reformed in
- 18:31there. You know, justified by faith alone. Just
- 18:35enough. But remember, you're saved because of
- 18:38repentance, not because of Christ. Ephesians
- 18:432, verse 8 and 9. For by grace you have been
- 18:46saved through faith. And this is not of your
- 18:51own doing. It is a gift of God, not a result
- 18:55of works, so that no one may boast. Pretty simple,
- 19:00isn't it? How are we saved? By grace through
- 19:04faith. Repentance isn't even mentioned. So they're
- 19:09using what Jesus said in Mark, repent and believe
- 19:13the gospel. Repentance is a totally different
- 19:18work of God. The baptism of the Holy Spirit.
- 19:25This is where they really jump off the rails.
- 19:27They're in a totally different direction at this
- 19:28point. All believers are entitled to and should
- 19:35ardently expect and earnestly seek the promise
- 19:38of the Father. You're entitled to Him. You're
- 19:42entitled to the Holy Spirit. Isn't that interesting?
- 19:45Not only are you entitled to the Holy Spirit,
- 19:47you are ardently to expect Him. So you repent
- 19:52and get saved. You then, by faith, are put in
- 19:59the family of God, but you don't have the Holy
- 20:02Spirit yet. Who is the seal guaranteeing your
- 20:04inheritance? Because you haven't spoken tongues
- 20:07yet. I haven't gotten there yet. But in reality,
- 20:09they're saying you should ardently expect one
- 20:11day for him to show up. And boom, there he is.
- 20:24Baptism, here's the rest of it. should earnestly
- 20:28seek the promise of the Father, the baptism in
- 20:31the Holy Spirit, and fire. I don't know about
- 20:35you, but I've been to several charismatic churches.
- 20:38I've never seen fire pop up on somebody's head.
- 20:45I have. According to the command of our Lord
- 20:50Jesus. Now they're saying that the baptism of
- 20:52the Holy Spirit is a command. You must be baptized
- 20:59in the Holy Spirit to speak in tongues. You must.
- 21:01Or what happens if you never speak in tongues?
- 21:05You're in deep trouble. Fire never happened on
- 21:10you. This was the normal experience of all the
- 21:14early Christian churches. With it, it, do you
- 21:21hear that? The reason why they use the term it
- 21:23is because they don't look at the Holy Spirit
- 21:25as a person. They don't call him he. He's a force,
- 21:29a means to an end. With it comes the endowment
- 21:36of power. Very interesting words. If you guys
- 21:41are like words, sometimes I mess up on my words.
- 21:45I don't speak good English. It's okay. Endowment
- 21:51is a very interesting word. Not endowment. An
- 21:55endowment of power for life and service. In other
- 21:59words, when it comes, it endues you with power
- 22:04to live the Christian life and to serve him.
- 22:09The bestowment of the gifts and their uses in
- 22:14the work of ministry. This Experience is distinct
- 22:21from the subsequent and subsequent to the experience
- 22:25of the new birth. What? Since when is my experience
- 22:33concerning my service to Christ separated from
- 22:37my new birth? Because of my new birth, I do serve
- 22:43him. With the baptism of the Holy Spirit comes
- 22:54such experiences. What do you hear now? It's
- 22:57all about experiences. It's not about truth here.
- 23:03It has nothing to do with what God says salvation
- 23:06is or your justification or your sanctification.
- 23:09We haven't got there yet. It's all about your
- 23:11experience. Here's four experiences. By experiencing
- 23:18the Holy Spirit, you'll have an overflowing fullness
- 23:22of the Spirit, a deepened reverence for God,
- 23:29an intensified consecration to God, and a dedication
- 23:34to His work, and a more active love for Christ,
- 23:39for His Word, and for the lost. That's the work
- 23:44of the Holy Spirit. That's what they say. If
- 23:47it, enters you, that's what you're going to get.
- 23:55Interesting. Number eight. The initial physical
- 24:00evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit, that's
- 24:05subheading, the baptism of believers in the Holy
- 24:08Spirit is witnessed by the initial physical sign
- 24:12of speaking with other tongues as the Spirit
- 24:15gives them utterance. The speaking in tongues
- 24:19in this instance is the same in essence as the
- 24:24gift of tongues, but is different in purpose
- 24:29and use. Really? That makes me feel good. Biblical
- 24:39view number one. Corinthians 12, 12 -13. For
- 24:45just as the body is one and has many members,
- 24:49and all the members of the body, though many,
- 24:52are one body, so it is with Christ. For in one
- 25:00spirit we were all baptized into one body, Jews
- 25:05or Greeks, slave or free, and all were made to
- 25:08drink of the one spirit. Where's tongues in that?
- 25:17Doesn't exist. What's this mean? Being baptized,
- 25:24being put into Christ by the Holy Spirit guarantees
- 25:30that we are in the family of God, guaranteed
- 25:35the inheritance, and all that he has promised
- 25:38in and through it. I will not leave you as orphans,
- 25:45Jesus said. So what happens to all those who
- 25:49never speak in tongues? Are they left as orphans?
- 25:54Something to think about. Number nine, sanctification.
- 25:59Interesting. This is interesting. Sanctification
- 26:02is an act of separation from that which is evil
- 26:06and of dedication unto God. The scripture teaches...
- 26:10The scriptures teach a life of holiness without
- 26:13which no man shall see the Lord. By the power
- 26:18of the Holy Spirit, we are able to obey the commands.
- 26:22Be ye holy, for I am holy. I agree with that
- 26:25statement. Of course, you know, they have a little
- 26:28bit in here. A little bit of nice, good doctrine.
- 26:32And then all of a sudden... This is where sanctification
- 26:36is realized in the believer by recognizing his
- 26:42identification with Christ in his death and resurrection.
- 26:46Do you hear that? You are sanctified when you
- 26:51realize you're sanctified. And when you realize
- 26:54you're sanctified, you recognize your identity
- 26:57in Jesus. That's when I'm sanctified. My identification
- 27:07with Christ in his death and resurrection and
- 27:09by faith reckoning daily upon the fact of that
- 27:14union. In other words, I am only sanctified if
- 27:17I daily recognize my identity in Jesus. And by
- 27:25offering every faculty continually to the dominion
- 27:30of the Holy Spirit. In other words, my sanctification
- 27:32is solely dependent upon my work alone. Biblical
- 27:40worldview. Biblical view. Westminster Shorter
- 27:43Catechism. Sanctification is the work of God's
- 27:45free grace whereby we are renewed in the whole
- 27:49man after the image of God and are enabled more
- 27:53and more to die to sin and live unto righteousness.
- 27:57By the Spirit. 1 Corinthians 1 .30. This kind
- 28:04of blows the whole thing out of, because the
- 28:06reality is, Christ is our sanctification. Look
- 28:10what it says, 1 Corinthians 1 .30. And because
- 28:13of him, you are in Christ Jesus, who became to
- 28:16us wisdom from God, righteousness, sanctification,
- 28:20and redemption. Now, I'm doing really good. Holy
- 28:30smokes. The other end of the spectrum. So that's
- 28:34one end. I chose AOG because it's the most popular
- 28:37charismatic denomination in all of religion.
- 28:47Now, I don't know about you, just going through
- 28:50AOG and reading just those. What do they have
- 28:58biblically in common with biblical truth? Why
- 29:05do we call them sisters and brothers in Christ
- 29:07when in reality they live and walk in deception?
- 29:12And if they are saved, they need to leave those
- 29:15churches. Do I believe that there are saved brothers
- 29:19and sisters in those churches? I do. But why
- 29:24do they attend? The same reason why there are
- 29:27possibly, possibly, brothers and sisters who
- 29:30go to Catholic church who attend. Because they
- 29:35love the experience. If your experience in the
- 29:39church determines your biblical stance on truth,
- 29:43you are in sin. Experience never overrides sound
- 29:52doctrine. Eastern and Greek Orthodox churches.
- 29:57It's the same thing. So if you hear about a Greek
- 29:59Orthodox, I just learned this. If you hear about
- 30:02a Greek Orthodox church, they're an Eastern Orthodox
- 30:03church. It's the same exact thing. This comes
- 30:09from their writings and their decree, which I'll
- 30:15share with you in a minute. The Mysterion of
- 30:18the Holy Eucharist. Communion. We believe that
- 30:26our Lord Jesus Christ is present in, and there's
- 30:32a bunch of other information in there, which
- 30:34I was like, that's just wording. I'm just getting
- 30:37rid of that. But truly and truly, so that after
- 30:41the consecration of bread and wine, the bread
- 30:46is changed, transubstantiated. transformed, transformed
- 30:56into the very true body of the Lord. And the
- 31:02wine is transformed and transubstantiated into
- 31:06the very true blood of the Lord. That's cannibalism.
- 31:10I don't know about you. That's just weird. But
- 31:15the Catholic Church does the same thing. So what
- 31:18you'll hear in Eastern Orthodoxy is the true
- 31:22church. And you cannot go to heaven unless you
- 31:26are part of the Eastern Orthodox Church. To get
- 31:30into the Eastern Orthodox Church, you must be
- 31:32baptized into the Eastern Orthodox Church, and
- 31:35you must partake properly in the Eucharist, or
- 31:41you're not in. All other churches are damned.
- 31:45And they can't stand Protestant churches, let
- 31:47alone of R .C. Sproul. I read a documentation,
- 31:50and it was all filled with R .C. Sproul comments.
- 31:54That's because it's true. So they didn't use
- 31:58it. They tried to speak against what he was saying.
- 32:06We also believe that after the consecration of
- 32:11bread and wine, it is no longer the bread and
- 32:15wine itself that remains, but the very body and
- 32:19blood of the Lord under the form and image of
- 32:23bread and wine. Wow! This is under Christendom.
- 32:34We also believe that this most pure body, and
- 32:39blood of the Lord is dispensed and enters the
- 32:43mouths and the wombs of those who partake, both
- 32:48the pious and the wicked. Only those who are
- 32:51pious and worthy receive remission of sins. Quote,
- 33:00unquote. This is all quotes. They receive remissions
- 33:04of sins and eternal life. That's a false gospel.
- 33:10They are liars. While those who are ungodly and
- 33:16unworthy receive condemnation and eternal judgment.
- 33:20Well, interesting. Now I understand why they
- 33:24use the word mysterion. The mysterion of repentance.
- 33:30You'll like this. And we know exactly what, let
- 33:34me read this. I've got to read this. 1 Corinthians
- 33:36chapter 11. Let me make this very clear so you
- 33:40understand biblically that what I'm speaking
- 33:43to you is true. Okay? Okay? The Lord's Supper
- 33:50is a proclamation of his death and a proclamation,
- 33:55a continual proclamation until he returns. So
- 34:00what we're saying is Christ died for our sins,
- 34:02was buried, and he will return again because
- 34:06he is resurrected. And Jesus says to do this
- 34:09in remembrance of me. The word remembrance is
- 34:12very clear in the Greek for those Greek scholars
- 34:15within the Eastern Orthodox Greek Church. It's
- 34:19very clear. They just skip over that. Because
- 34:25it doesn't fit the traditions of men. And let
- 34:32me make this very clear. From the time of Christ
- 34:35to his, all the way to 1100, there was only one
- 34:43church. It was called the church. Ekklesia, the
- 34:52body of Christ. That's it, the bride. That's
- 34:55all there was. And there happened to be a great
- 34:57schism in 1100. where the church divided into
- 35:02the Eastern Church and the Western Church. The
- 35:05Eastern Church became the Eastern Orthodox Church,
- 35:07or Greek Orthodox Church, or the Orthodox Church,
- 35:11and the Western Church became the Roman Orthodox
- 35:15Church, which eventually became the Roman Catholic
- 35:18Church. And from the Roman Catholic Church, thank
- 35:25God for the Reformation, There became, throughout
- 35:30the years, divisions. God pulled the wheat out
- 35:36in the Reformation. So let me read to you. Communion.
- 35:49For I received from the Lord what I also delivered
- 35:51to you, that the Lord Jesus, on the night when
- 35:53he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had
- 35:54given thanks, he broke it. And said, this is
- 35:58my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance
- 36:01of me. So when he says this is my body for you,
- 36:05what he's showing them is my body's been broken
- 36:08for you. Not that the bread is literally his
- 36:11body. So when Jesus says, unless you eat my body
- 36:14and drink my blood, you have no part of me, he's
- 36:17using it in a figurative term. It's interesting.
- 36:23How figurative orthodoxies are concerning Eastern
- 36:27and Catholic. Really figurative when it comes
- 36:30to a lot of different things, especially when
- 36:32they want to control you and dominate you and
- 36:34tell you what you can and cannot do. Except for
- 36:38when you take the Eucharist. It's literal. You're
- 36:42just putting Jesus on a plate and going it down.
- 36:44That's literally what they're saying. It's in
- 36:49remembrance of me. In the same way, also, he
- 36:52took the cup after supper, saying, This cup is
- 36:55the new covenant in my blood. Do this as often
- 36:57as you drink it in remembrance of me. The new
- 37:01covenant. For as often as you eat the bread and
- 37:07drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death
- 37:08until he comes. Come, Lord Jesus. The mysterion
- 37:14of repentance. Another mystery. The church states
- 37:19that after one baptism for the remissions of
- 37:21sin, well, I thought you just said that the only
- 37:25way I get remission of sin is if I eat the Eucharist.
- 37:29How can I be forgiven of my sin if I haven't
- 37:32taken Eucharist yet? Now I'm in baptism for the
- 37:36remission of sin, but not for the Eucharist now.
- 37:40And the confession of sins through the sacrament
- 37:44of repentance highest gift to men. Tradition
- 37:52subheading. While the Bible is treasured as a
- 37:54valuable written record of God's revelation,
- 37:57it does not contain wholly that revelation. When
- 38:06I read that, I was about to have a seizure. I'm
- 38:08like, what? What? Oh, that makes sense. Do you
- 38:12know why? Because the priest is also inspired
- 38:15as the word is. So every time a priest comes
- 38:18up and speaks, he's also being inspired by the
- 38:21Holy Spirit to give you his truth. Remember we
- 38:26talked about the opinion. The Bible is viewed
- 38:30as only one expression of God's revelation in
- 38:34the ongoing life of his people. Scripture is
- 38:42part of the treasure of faith, which is known
- 38:45as tradition. What's the other part? Why the
- 38:51Orthodox kiss and venerate holy icons. Here's
- 38:56the other part. So you got to do the Eucharist,
- 39:02you got to do baptism, and you got to kiss a
- 39:04bunch of pictures and pray to the pictures. Yeah.
- 39:12Orthodox Christians kiss icons and bow before
- 39:15them because Christ entered the world and made
- 39:17himself a part of it. And that world he entered
- 39:26is good and holy. It was originally until sin
- 39:31entered and corrupted everything. For the ways
- 39:34of sin is death. For all have sinned and fallen
- 39:36short of the glory of God. If the world he entered
- 39:39is good and holy, then you're good and holy until
- 39:42you screw it all up. I wonder when that is. In
- 39:51this way, icons serve as windows into heaven,
- 39:56showing us the glory of Christ. We kiss icons
- 40:05to express our love. They serve as windows into
- 40:11the sacred realm of heaven, into the kingdom
- 40:14of God. The persons betrayed on these wooden
- 40:18icons are in a spiritual way present with us.
- 40:26I remember a prophet that Saul conjured up. Do
- 40:34you remember? Samuel? He gets the witch. Brings
- 40:40Samuel back. Samuel goes, what are you doing?
- 40:45So do not be alarmed. I'm a little scared. Not
- 40:49really. If you see Orthodox Christians crossing
- 40:52themselves in front of the icons and kissing
- 40:55them, that's called idolatry. Romans chapter
- 41:011. I told you I'm going to give you Bible verses
- 41:04for everything. Romans 1. You've got to love
- 41:09it so far, right? For although they knew God,
- 41:12they did not honor him as God and give thanks
- 41:14to him, but they became futile in their thinking
- 41:17and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming
- 41:19to be wise, they became fools and they exchanged
- 41:21the glory of the immortal God for images resembling
- 41:25mortal men and birds and animals and creeping
- 41:30things. Confession of doctrine by... Dastanis
- 41:37or Dastanis. Decree number 13. I hope I said
- 41:40that right. Yeah, Dastanis. That's how you say
- 41:44it. Decree 13. This is the decree 13. We believe
- 41:48that a person is justified not simply by faith
- 41:51alone, but by faith urged on by love, that is,
- 41:56by faith, through faith, and works. Let us recognize...
- 42:03As completely unholy, the idea that faith replacing
- 42:08works requires justification in Christ. What?
- 42:16For faith in this sense could be appropriate
- 42:19for everyone. And there would be no unsaved.
- 42:27Which is obviously false. No. Because what they're
- 42:32doing with this idea of justification is they're
- 42:34disregarding penal substitutionary atonement.
- 42:40So let me make this very clear for you. Atonement,
- 42:43to be justified, atonement is offered to the
- 42:50world. It is applied only to the believer. I
- 43:00can give you many examples of that, especially
- 43:02in the New and Old Testament concerning when
- 43:05they would take an animal and they would sacrifice
- 43:06the animal, but they would take the animal into
- 43:09the house, and the animal would stay in the house
- 43:12for the week, and then they would take the animal
- 43:14out of the house to sacrifice it for the family
- 43:16that the animal was in. Does that mean it was
- 43:19for you if you didn't live in the house? No.
- 43:28And there would be no unsaved, obviously. On
- 43:32the contrary, we believe that it is not the specter
- 43:37of faith alone, but that the faith that is in
- 43:41us through works justifies us in Christ. We honor
- 43:51deeds not only as evidence confirming our calling,
- 43:56but also as fruits that make our faith active
- 43:58and can, according to the divine promise, deliver
- 44:02to everyone a well -deserved reward, good or
- 44:06bad, depending on what he has done with his body.
- 44:10That's just two of the extremes. Let me read
- 44:15to you Galatians 2 .16, so that you clearly understand,
- 44:19biblically, what the Bible says concerning justification.
- 44:24You guys ready? For we ourselves, this is Paul
- 44:28speaking to the Galatians who are Jews, we ourselves
- 44:31are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners. Yet,
- 44:35we know that a person is not justified by works
- 44:42of the law, but through faith in Jesus Christ.
- 44:49Could we get any more clear than that? In order
- 44:56to be justified by faith in Christ and not by
- 44:59works of the law, because by works of the law
- 45:02no one will be justified. Mr. Priest of the Eastern
- 45:07Orthodox Church. You can't get more clear than
- 45:13what I just read to you. It is very clear. So
- 45:17why do I share these two examples here? What
- 45:22do you notice about these two examples? Who's
- 45:26preeminent in these two examples? Is Jesus? Who
- 45:33is man? Man's the preeminent. What's interesting
- 45:41about these two examples, depending on where
- 45:44you're at, whether you are in the evangelical
- 45:47extreme or you are in the orthodox extreme, the
- 45:52doctrines are almost the same, aren't they? Jesus
- 45:55worded it a little differently. So let me read
- 45:59to you 1 Peter again. 2 Peter chapter 2. But
- 46:03false prophets also arose among the people, just
- 46:06as there will be false teachers among you, who
- 46:08will secretly bring in, introduce secretly and
- 46:12craftily, the opinions meant to bring ruin and
- 46:16destruction by discord and contention, even denying
- 46:19the master who bought them, bringing upon themselves
- 46:22swift destruction. And many will follow, will
- 46:26comply with, will yield to. their unbridled lust,
- 46:29excessive licentiousness, lasciviousness, wantonness,
- 46:34outrageousness, shamelessness, and insolence.
- 46:38And because of them, the way of truth is blasphemed.
- 46:43And in their greed, in their desire for more
- 46:46and covetousness, they will use you for gain
- 46:50and mold and form, not being genuine, words.
- 46:57Their condemnation, their penal judgment from
- 46:59long ago is not inactive or in delay, and their
- 47:03destruction is not lingering. So I'm going to
- 47:07share this with you. Not everything that calls
- 47:09itself Christian is Christian. And we have to,
- 47:13with boldness and confidence, speak the truth
- 47:17about Christ. Not in an attitude of condemnation
- 47:22toward... Those who are lost and deceived. But
- 47:32to those who speak as though they speak truth.
- 47:37And you know what we're supposed to do for them.
- 47:39I gave you all the Bible verses. What are you
- 47:42supposed to do? But like Chuck says, do it with
- 47:48love. But do it. We live in some evil days. And
- 47:59these heresies have been in existence since the
- 48:03church started. If there were false prophets
- 48:08in the Old Testament, there are false teachers
- 48:10today. Be very careful. Weigh everything that
- 48:15I preach and everything that I say in accordance
- 48:18with the scriptures. Weigh it all. Anything you
- 48:22hear someone speak, you weigh it. I love Bodie
- 48:24Bauckham, but I weigh everything he used to say.
- 48:28Same thing with John MacArthur. I weigh everything
- 48:30he used to say. R .C. Sproul, I weigh everything
- 48:33he used to say. It's my responsibility as a believer.
- 48:37As a workman approved by God. So, that's just
- 48:42a little bit. We'll finish chapter 2 next week.
- 48:46Okay? Father, I want to thank you so much for
- 48:49your goodness and faithfulness. Thank you, Lord,
- 48:50for your word. Thank you, Holy Spirit, that you
- 48:53guide us in all truth and that your word, Lord
- 48:57Jesus, is inerrant and infallible, the word of
- 49:01God. And thank you through divine preservation,
- 49:04you have given us translation so that we may
- 49:07know confidently that the Bibles that we read
- 49:10are your word. and in reflection of the actual
- 49:15real codex that you have given us. We praise
- 49:18you and thank you for your goodness and your
- 49:20faithfulness. To you be honor and glory forever.
- 49:22In Jesus' name.
