SPEAKER_02: Hello everybody, welcome back to another episode of Cigars and Cinema Podcast.
1:17
SPEAKER_02: This is the podcast where we smoke cigars unabashedly commentating, in some cases, giving extreme opinions on film and entertainment.
1:25
SPEAKER_02: As usual, I'm one of your hosts, Eric Drazen from OGT Cigars, coming to you from the East Coast in North Carolina.
1:32
SPEAKER_02: And on the other side of the country on the west coast, we have Curtis Bailey.
1:36
SPEAKER_02: Curtis, thanks for jumping on.
1:38
SPEAKER_02: I'm looking forward to tonight's episode.
1:39
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's a good opportunity to offend a bunch of generations about their favorite movies.
1:44
SPEAKER_02: That's right.
1:46
SPEAKER_02: I'm also uh excited too because we've come up with separate lists for tonight.
1:51
SPEAKER_02: Uh, and to see like what ones we align on and what ones we're like, nah, I don't know.
1:56
SPEAKER_00: We'll find out.
1:57
SPEAKER_02: It's gonna be pretty cool.
1:58
SPEAKER_00: So uh imagine there's a good chunk of my list of shame that you're like, dude, I watched that when I was 12.
2:05
SPEAKER_02: There you go.
2:06
SPEAKER_02: Well, guys, if you're jumping on tonight, uh, we're gonna be talking about uh some of the biggest moments in movies that we have watched that we were either really let down on, like we had good expectations for it and we were really let down, or the reverse, and we didn't maybe expect to enjoy it as much as we did.
2:24
SPEAKER_02: So we have separately comprised two separate lists.
2:28
SPEAKER_02: Um, as I had mentioned to Curtis earlier, uh my my list of bad movies is a little bit longer, but uh it'll be an exciting show.
2:36
SPEAKER_02: So, as always, let us know what you're smoking tonight, what you're enjoying tonight.
2:39
SPEAKER_02: We'd love to do.
2:40
SPEAKER_02: Uh, let's see here.
2:41
SPEAKER_02: RJ is on saying, hello, Eric and Curtis.
2:43
SPEAKER_02: Looking forward to uh to together show tonight.
2:47
SPEAKER_02: Uh looking forward to the show tonight.
2:50
SPEAKER_02: Okay, well, thank you so much, RJ.
2:52
SPEAKER_02: Thank you for jumping on.
2:53
SPEAKER_02: And we are actually on the last of this month's variety pack until the next one gets sent out tomorrow morning.
3:02
SPEAKER_02: So it's gonna be pretty cool.
3:04
SPEAKER_02: I think um we uh let's see here.
3:08
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so this is the variety pack that we are going through, and we're gonna be smoking that one on the far left.
3:12
SPEAKER_02: It's another lure cigar known as the brownie trout.
3:16
SPEAKER_02: Um and with that said, we have a new lineup.
3:21
SPEAKER_02: And if you guys are unfamiliar with this, uh each and every week we try to go through the OGT Variety Club so that if you are a member, you can smoke along with us.
3:31
SPEAKER_02: And we had just released what's coming next uh week, actually, mailing out tomorrow.
3:36
SPEAKER_02: Take a look at this banger lineup.
3:38
SPEAKER_02: This uh every single one of these cigars is technically a new release.
3:42
SPEAKER_02: And we had yeah, we had one of those months where we just had so many new things coming in through the humidor, and I was like, why not pick some of the best and put it in the pack?
3:51
SPEAKER_02: So we got crown heads on the far left, which is the moonflower.
3:55
SPEAKER_02: This is the one of the most anticipated and most popular crown head cigars right now.
4:00
SPEAKER_02: We have both of El Mago's newest tin series, the Jug and the Cavalry.
4:05
SPEAKER_02: On the far right, we have the new domain attenuation Connecticut, which is exceptional.
4:10
SPEAKER_02: And then in the middle, just like we did last week, we have a new blend from the Shadow Factory.
4:15
SPEAKER_02: Uh, this one being a Habano.
4:17
SPEAKER_02: So I'm excited for it.
4:18
SPEAKER_02: That's gonna be the lineup for the variety, it's gonna be pretty cool.
4:20
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
4:22
SPEAKER_02: Um, let's see here.
4:23
SPEAKER_02: We got some more comments, but what say you we jump into what we are smoking tonight?
4:27
SPEAKER_02: Get that lit up, get the conversation going, and then we'll jump into comments.
4:31
SPEAKER_02: So tonight we are gonna be lighting up the lure brownie trout.
4:37
SPEAKER_02: So this particular one is released in one Vitola, that being a six by 54 Toro Box Press.
4:44
SPEAKER_02: Now, the Brownie Trout sports a Nicaraguan Maduro wrapper.
4:48
SPEAKER_02: Whether it's Habano or not, that's my belief, but that's all that was said.
4:52
SPEAKER_02: It was Nicaragua Maduro, and it's a Nicaraguan binder or filler.
4:55
SPEAKER_02: And I will have to say, um, I know we've smoked the uh the Wahoo on this.
5:00
SPEAKER_02: Um, and the this particular cigar is a core line product, but it was the one that kind of convinced me like lure cigars has something special going on.
5:09
SPEAKER_02: So I'm excited to see what you think about it and whoever else has smoked it, excited for that as well.
5:15
SPEAKER_02: So um let's say let's get a let's get a cut going and a cold draw.
5:20
SPEAKER_02: How's the weather in California been?
5:23
SPEAKER_00: It's slowly creeping up the uh uh the thermostat, and that never makes me happy, but it's an inevitable.
5:32
SPEAKER_02: It seemed like from what I could understand, you guys didn't have that hot of a 4th of July.
5:37
SPEAKER_00: No, relatively speaking, it wasn't that bad.
5:40
SPEAKER_02: Nice, nice.
5:41
SPEAKER_02: We had we had a hundred degree, I think like 65-70% humidity, so it was hot.
5:46
SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, that's that was that that was more rough than what we had for sure.
5:50
SPEAKER_02: Okay.
5:52
SPEAKER_02: I'm getting like a rye bread on the cold draw.
5:58
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's interesting.
5:59
SPEAKER_02: Almost like a marble rye.
6:01
SPEAKER_00: Super duper mild to me.
6:02
SPEAKER_00: I can barely pick out much of anything.
6:05
SPEAKER_02: Okay.
6:06
SPEAKER_02: Good draw to it.
6:08
SPEAKER_02: Um, yeah, let's get this lit up and see where it goes.
6:14
SPEAKER_02: Every cigar leaves an impression.
6:17
SPEAKER_00: However, it's not until you take a moment and analyze the full experience from construction to flavor to profile that you can truly appreciate it.
6:24
SPEAKER_02: So enjoy your cigar as you light it up.
6:26
SPEAKER_02: Take the time to toast it, smell the room notes, and experience the first notes as they come alive.
6:33
SPEAKER_00: In the same way, movies can tell deeper stories or show us things we haven't noticed on the surface.
6:38
SPEAKER_00: So journey with us as we take a more detailed appreciation for the craft of cigar and movie making.
6:52
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I haven't actually smoked a cigar in a little bit of time, and now I remember why I enjoyed it so much.
6:58
SPEAKER_02: Um it's got some of those Maduro Maduro Nicaraguan tobacco notes that you kind of find that's a bit more punchy, but really clean finish, like clean on the palate.
7:07
SPEAKER_02: I don't know if the experience is same with you.
7:09
SPEAKER_00: No, I think that makes absolute sense.
7:11
SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, it's like right before it drops off, it finishes with like a a little kick of um pepper or spice of some kind.
7:20
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
7:20
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
7:21
SPEAKER_00: Um and the the center of the palette seems uh like pretty balanced, like to the point where like I'm having to fight to kind of figure out what I'm tasting.
7:33
SPEAKER_00: You know, it's got a lot of those kind of core flavors that we get on a lot of these sticks, like um uh uh bread and earthiness and stuff like that kind of mingle together to the point that I'm like, you know, it's almost creates a new hole that you have to kind of sit there and really kind of concentrate on to be like, okay, what are the constituent parts here?
7:54
SPEAKER_02: Yes, no, for sure.
7:55
SPEAKER_02: And and along with like some of those like core flavors, there's this I don't normally associate like creaminess to a Maduro, but there's something like that going on, and it's it's got this like refreshing creaminess, and that's where I think it's attributed also to the sweetness of it.
8:12
SPEAKER_02: Um, this is a really good like Maduro, I think, for someone who wants a bit more than just like mild and smooth, but it's also not overwhelming as well.
8:21
SPEAKER_02: It's got some good sweet notes to it.
8:23
SPEAKER_00: Uh, I'm also getting like in the background, something that I don't think I've ever picked out as a flavor note before, but like a dark ale.
8:34
SPEAKER_02: Oh, I can see that.
8:35
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I can see that it's got yeah, a bit of hoppiness to it.
8:39
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, interesting.
8:41
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, I really appreciate what lure has done.
8:44
SPEAKER_02: Um, so I'm excited to go through this cigar again, go through it uh with you trying it as well, but off to a great start.
8:50
SPEAKER_02: And like you said, that little kick of spice, hint of spice there really helps round it out.
8:56
SPEAKER_02: Okay, um, so as I see we got a lot of comments on.
8:59
SPEAKER_02: Um, so let's pull up some of these.
9:01
SPEAKER_02: Let's see here.
9:01
SPEAKER_02: We got Jason saying, Hey there, almost missed the show.
9:04
SPEAKER_02: It says next week.
9:05
SPEAKER_02: Yes, there was a kafuffle earlier.
9:08
SPEAKER_02: So thank you guys for realizing.
9:11
SPEAKER_02: Yes, we're still on tonight.
9:12
SPEAKER_02: So thank you, Jason, for jumping on.
9:13
SPEAKER_02: Sorry for the miscommunication.
9:15
SPEAKER_02: RJ saying, uh, looking forward to tonight's show.
9:18
SPEAKER_02: I am smoking the Cigar Clowns Pagliace uh Oscuro, sipping on some crystal light iced tea.
9:25
SPEAKER_02: Very nice.
9:26
SPEAKER_02: Still one of the best$8 cigars out there.
9:29
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, solid.
9:30
SPEAKER_02: Very solid.
9:32
SPEAKER_02: Uh, let's see here.
9:33
SPEAKER_02: JD Pete says hitting Plasencia Alma de Cielo and live loving it.
9:38
SPEAKER_02: That is a great cigar.
9:39
SPEAKER_02: Really, really good, really good blend.
9:41
SPEAKER_02: RJ is also saying, sorry, Eric, that was sent.
9:43
SPEAKER_02: Uh Effie fishing?
9:47
SPEAKER_02: Effie fishing.
9:50
SPEAKER_00: We'll we'll we'll we'll figure it out.
9:52
SPEAKER_02: Ah, that's it.
9:54
SPEAKER_02: With an auto spell.
9:55
SPEAKER_02: Okay, there we go.
9:56
SPEAKER_02: There we go.
9:56
SPEAKER_02: Also, is RJ saying, looking forward to the variety club this month?
10:00
SPEAKER_02: Uh, I am too.
10:00
SPEAKER_02: I think it's one of our better boxes.
10:02
SPEAKER_02: I know that probably sounds like a sales pitch of like every month is the best one.
10:06
SPEAKER_02: But uh, this one I really do think like bang for buck, pound for pound.
10:12
SPEAKER_02: This is a really good box.
10:13
SPEAKER_02: So I'm excited to go through it with you guys.
10:14
SPEAKER_02: I'm looking forward to it.
10:16
SPEAKER_02: And let's see here.
10:17
SPEAKER_02: Smoking a chaos theory uh and some crimson cask.
10:20
SPEAKER_02: Nice.
10:21
SPEAKER_00: Oh boy, that's I that's the combination I sold him on the movie.
10:24
SPEAKER_02: Yes, yep.
10:26
SPEAKER_02: Very nice.
10:27
SPEAKER_02: Jason, we're all we're all envious right now.
10:30
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he's limited up right now for sure.
10:32
SPEAKER_02: Speaking of which, are you pairing anything tonight?
10:34
SPEAKER_00: I just got my standard issue old-fashioned.
10:37
SPEAKER_02: Nice, yeah, nice.
10:39
SPEAKER_02: Okay, so everyone, tonight is gonna be a really interesting uh night because this is also a sort of audience participation, because we have decided to put together a list, two sides, of some of the most like heralded pop culture, popular movies that really just didn't hit for either one of us.
10:58
SPEAKER_02: Um, and again, our lists are separate.
11:00
SPEAKER_02: So Curtis has his own, I have my own.
11:03
SPEAKER_02: And we're gonna kind of rant and talk a little bit about why these movies didn't make the mark, and then we also are gonna be talking about some movies that we didn't expect to enjoy as much or like as much.
11:12
SPEAKER_02: Um and I don't know, Curtis, uh, like what your feeling is on this.
11:17
SPEAKER_02: I feel like a lot of it going into a movie you've never seen, there's some level of expectation before that.
11:23
SPEAKER_02: Do you try to like subdue that or do you do you let like outside sources really like kind of impact that?
11:30
SPEAKER_00: It it varies a little.
11:31
SPEAKER_00: I mean, uh, I think there's a certain degree to which I don't have any control over it, um, because uh, you know, my experience and taste and just kind of like general natural reaction to things sort of drives a lot of it.
11:46
SPEAKER_00: But like, yeah, when and where possible, I will try to be conscious of you know, uh, either because of uh, you know, knowing the the pedigree, like the people involved who made the movie, and I'm like, if I haven't liked their stuff in the past, how likely am I to like this one?
12:02
SPEAKER_00: Kind of or um uh sometimes with movies that are, for example, very old, uh, that you know you'll hear about through the grapevine, you know, read it articles in film magazines about how this or that is one of the greatest films ever made, and yeah, you know, it's in you know, classes and stuff like that.
12:22
SPEAKER_00: Oftentimes, and I've discovered this partly through experience that um sometimes that means um altering your understanding of what a great movie means, and that's not because to say that those movies are bad, but it does mean that um some of the conventions of the uh art form at the time were different than they are now.
12:42
SPEAKER_00: Yes, and what people uh wanted, expected, or recognized as great is again also slightly different criteria, so that all kind of factors in there too.
12:52
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well, and I know there's a handful of movies we'll we'll talk about.
12:55
SPEAKER_02: Like, oh, did you know this is coming out?
12:57
SPEAKER_02: Did you see the trailer?
12:58
SPEAKER_02: And I know that you you've purposely avoided some trailers before going to see I have before, yeah.
13:04
SPEAKER_00: Um, I try not to go out of my way to do that because it could be probably a little bit maddening, but there's been a couple times where I did it on purpose for sure.
13:11
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
13:12
SPEAKER_02: And honestly, there are some movies similarly that I'm like, I know I'm gonna go watch this, and with modern day trailers, it's usually trailer number two that I'll avoid because I'm like, that's the longest, that's the most reveals, and it's fine.
13:27
SPEAKER_02: Um, and we've even like I don't think we need to put it, discuss it on this list, but I think we've even gone through some of these movies.
13:34
SPEAKER_02: Like uh, I think Barbarian is a good version of that, of it being told how amazing it was, and both of us being very let down.
13:41
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
13:42
SPEAKER_02: So there is that now.
13:44
SPEAKER_02: So I what I want to ask everyone watching is uh if you have the opportunity as we go through this, drop down in the comments.
13:50
SPEAKER_02: Uh, what are some movies that you were very disappointed with that did not hold up, were not as good as you thought you they were going to be, or you told and either based on your own expectations or yeah, because the culture andor your peers were like, you have to see this.
14:05
SPEAKER_02: Yes, exactly.
14:06
SPEAKER_02: Um, and honestly, I'm gonna pull up one of the comments because it's actually on my list.
14:11
SPEAKER_02: Sweet.
14:11
SPEAKER_02: Uh, as crazy as this may sound, Chris Costman says Titanic.
14:16
SPEAKER_02: Titanic uh was a tough pill for me to swallow.
14:19
SPEAKER_02: Um, and I think fundamentally, I think I've talked to you about this before.
14:23
SPEAKER_02: Fundamentally, I always have an issue, will always have an issue with a major historical event.
14:28
SPEAKER_02: For the most part, the most screen time is dedicated to a love story.
14:32
SPEAKER_02: Um, now, whether or not it works or not, I'm not proclaiming this.
14:35
SPEAKER_02: This is a horrible movie.
14:36
SPEAKER_02: I'm this is all personal preference, yeah, but it just missed the mark for me.
14:40
SPEAKER_00: Um, what are your things?
14:42
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, I mean, and that's that's a pretty long-standing tradition in Hollywood, you know, these sort of like epic romances.
14:49
SPEAKER_00: I'm talking about stuff like the English patient or Dr.
14:52
SPEAKER_00: Javago or whatever, you know, like that kind of thing has been around for a long time, but um, you know, how effective it is kind of leans pretty heavily on the quality of the of the romantic plot between the characters and um you know the those performances and stuff with a movie like Titanic, um, I think it's really impressive how uh that film more or less shows the Titanic tragedy happening kind of in real time because it took about two ish two hours two and a half hours for the boat to sink, and the movies, you know, three something, I can't remember exactly.
15:31
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so just as somebody who who likes history and that kind of thing, you know, like that aspect of the movie is really cool.
15:38
SPEAKER_00: Um I don't think that the romance is necessarily bad, but it is incredibly uh straightforward and sure, not not challenging in any particular way, like it's you know, uh, I think this may have been mentioned before, but Jack is almost Rose's manic pixie dream boy.
16:00
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so yeah, it's got that going for it.
16:03
SPEAKER_02: And and I don't think there's anything wrong in having romance stories or anything like that within historical events, it's more just like the amount of time you dedicate to it, I think is there.
16:14
SPEAKER_02: I mean, and uh uh with that being said, the effects and how the ship was portrayed and executed, really amazing job.
16:23
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
16:23
SPEAKER_00: I mean, uh production value-wise, the movie's kind of almost unimpeachable, really, from you know 1997, I think, when it came out.
16:32
SPEAKER_02: Did you did you see that in theaters when it came out?
16:34
SPEAKER_00: I did.
16:35
SPEAKER_00: Okay, yeah, I think I saw it more than once for that reason because just because I was so awed by the spectacle of the whole thing.
16:41
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
16:42
SPEAKER_00: Like I remember uh you know, uh sitting in the theater watching it for the first time, and again, you know, this is one of those things that, like, I'm telling you, like, it's not the same thing watching a movie for the first time or on your phone or on a laptop or whatever.
16:54
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, when I'm sitting in front of that 40 foot tall screen and they fire up the Titanics engines for the first time, and you see those pistons the size of like a 30-story building start moving.
17:05
SPEAKER_00: Like, I was like, this is insane, just thinking about the like in you know, 1912, 14, 12, 12, I mean, you know, like this was the pinnacle of the technology, and look at how like kind of bananas it is.
17:19
SPEAKER_00: So you're like stuff like that for me really works in cinema.
17:23
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, for sure.
17:24
SPEAKER_02: Um, so yeah, that's one of the ones on my list.
17:27
SPEAKER_02: Uh, and it's definitely one of the like most heralded films of all time.
17:32
SPEAKER_02: Oh made all the money, yeah, yeah, yeah.
17:35
SPEAKER_00: So uh what's one from yours?
17:37
SPEAKER_00: Uh well, I'm gonna um I'm gonna go back in time a little bit.
17:43
SPEAKER_00: Um obviously, we just got finished doing a whole big giant run of Star Wars films, you know, all the all the Star Wars everything.
17:53
SPEAKER_00: And I remember as a teenager learning that uh um Star Wars, the original film, uh lost the best picture Oscar to um Annie Hall, which was this little um you know romance drama uh made by Woody Allen starring Diane Keaton.
18:10
SPEAKER_00: And for a long time, because I was a stupid Star Wars idiot, I was like, man, screw Annie Hall.
18:16
SPEAKER_00: I'm never watching that movie, beat Star Wars, me.
18:19
SPEAKER_00: Um so I uh I actually finally watched Annie Hall for the first time sometime in the last, I think, four months.
18:27
SPEAKER_00: Um I was like, I want to see what this is all about, the movie that beat Star Wars at the Oscars.
18:33
SPEAKER_00: And uh I think I understand why it was, you know, one of those movies that uh uh audiences of the time really latched onto.
18:40
SPEAKER_00: It's my understanding that it kind of signals a pivot in Woody Allen's uh career because Woody Allen is the director of that, where he stopped doing farces and started doing more like you know, actual sort of you know, still stylized but a little bit more earnest um um romance dramas and stuff like that.
19:01
SPEAKER_00: And it's probably because I grew up in an era that followed Annie Hall, where everybody would start like doing Annie Hall type movies and borrowing from that style, that I was just like, there's not a whole lot in this that feels fresh to me.
19:14
SPEAKER_00: Okay, okay, uh Diane Keaton is really good in it, but the biggest uh the biggest hindrance for me is just Woody Allen himself.
19:24
SPEAKER_00: He plays this, you know, um borderline, intolerable, like you know, it's like 50% arrogant, 50% insecure, you know, guy who it's I don't know, the the the personality that that type uh of personality for a main character, uh it's just just I I can't identify with it, it rubs me a long way.
19:50
SPEAKER_00: I don't find it entertaining to listen to.
19:52
SPEAKER_00: I was just kind of like, all right, uh there goes Annie Hall, I guess.
19:56
SPEAKER_02: You know, and Star Wars still last to it, yeah, yeah.
20:00
SPEAKER_00: Um but uh again, it's it's I I I I understand why you know it was recognized at the time that it came out because it was doing some slightly inventive things with comedy, and I guess the self-deprecating nature of the main character was something that maybe felt a little bit fresh or at least particularly well executed and stuff.
20:20
SPEAKER_00: But you know, fast forward almost 50 years, I'm just like I'm not the audience for this.
20:24
SPEAKER_02: I don't sure yeah, yeah, yeah.
20:26
SPEAKER_02: Now I personally have not seen it, but Mallory has seen it.
20:30
SPEAKER_02: We should have had her guest star real quick.
20:31
SPEAKER_02: Um, but she has dropped down two comments about that because we actually mentioned she mentioned uh Annie Hall, and she says Woody Allen is a joke, but Diane Keaton is absolutely incandescently wonderful.
20:43
SPEAKER_02: She also says, I have a whole diatribe about his narcissism in this movie.
20:47
SPEAKER_02: Yes.
20:48
SPEAKER_02: Um, and I actually I think if I remember correctly, she watched it when I was doing an event at the shop, and I remember coming home late and I heard the diatribe when the movie ended.
20:59
SPEAKER_02: Um, but honestly, I have never really been ever someone to seek out Woody Allen, so that's mostly why I haven't seen it.
21:06
SPEAKER_02: I was like, as a Woody Allen film, I don't really care to see it.
21:08
SPEAKER_00: I've seen a handful of his other movies.
21:10
SPEAKER_00: I don't think he's exactly my filmmaker.
21:12
SPEAKER_00: I mean, I guess to a degree, kudos to him for putting his own insecurities, you know, rather loud, uh, you know, up on screen for audiences to evaluate and pick apart.
21:22
SPEAKER_00: You know, that's artistically a little bit brave, but at the same time, I'm like, go away.
21:27
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
21:28
SPEAKER_02: Okay, okay.
21:29
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, I mean, uh, when we compare prizes list, there's really no limit on time, like what year.
21:36
SPEAKER_02: Similarly, um, I really enjoy Alfred Hitchcock movies.
21:41
SPEAKER_02: I don't know if I am a Alfred Hitchcock buff as much as some people are, but the one that I was really disappointed with was North by Northwest.
21:50
SPEAKER_00: Oh gosh, you know, I I felt a similar vibe.
21:52
SPEAKER_00: And it okay, it might be because of that thing that I was just referencing with Annie Hall, where it's like, you know, okay, people took North by Northwest.
22:00
SPEAKER_00: This, you know, a man wrongly accused and is on the run and getting into not exactly action sequences.
22:06
SPEAKER_00: He's not a man of action.
22:08
SPEAKER_00: There's no real like you know fighting or violence or anything.
22:11
SPEAKER_00: It's just lots of running, right?
22:13
SPEAKER_01: Yes.
22:14
SPEAKER_00: And uh, you know, obviously you can see that, you know, uh the fruit of that born in like you know, movie uh movies and stories like The Fugitive, and you know, half of those uh Tom Cruise legal thrillers, and you know, just like it became a type, and I think that it became such a type that when you go back and watch maybe the original, or at least among the progenitors, you're just like, Oh, yeah, this is just another one of these types of yes, and I've seen this a hundred times already, right?
22:42
SPEAKER_02: Well, and and I think too, uh, so Alfred Hitchcock has had an amazing career, no one will deny that.
22:48
SPEAKER_02: And there are some movies that he's done that I love, like Rear Window, Shadow of a Doubt.
22:52
SPEAKER_02: This movie, though, felt a little bit self-indulgent in like the master suspense side, and at the same time, it's it's probably a little thing, but its musical score is to the point of obnoxious to me, to where it pulls you out of the action.
23:06
SPEAKER_02: And for someone who has done so many amazing movies, how did something like this happen?
23:11
SPEAKER_02: I don't know, but it's I think it has an issue.
23:13
SPEAKER_02: I also think similarly, it's got a problem when you have Cary Grant about 20, 21 years older than the leading lady, right?
23:21
SPEAKER_02: That point, too.
23:22
SPEAKER_02: It's like, okay, it's hard to invest in this, and nothing against Kerry Grant.
23:25
SPEAKER_02: There's a lot of movies I really enjoy that he's done, but just the I feel like the sum of its parts, the all these ingredients made for a poor turnout for me.
23:33
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
23:34
SPEAKER_00: Um, I think Kerry Grant is wonderful at um, you know, a lot of the sort of like very light on its feet character work and uh dialogue stuff that we like him in, doing like Arsenic and Old Lace or Holiday, right?
23:50
SPEAKER_00: You know, like that's that's my Cary Grant sweet spot.
23:53
SPEAKER_00: In this where he has just to be a you know sort of haggard man on the run, you know, trying to avoid trouble.
24:00
SPEAKER_00: There's less interesting stuff for him to do.
24:02
SPEAKER_00: So I wouldn't like chalk that one amongst his greatest performances just because of the way the the movie uses him as a like a you know a plot puppet prior to it.
24:13
SPEAKER_00: Yes, yeah, yes.
24:14
SPEAKER_02: And someone who's got to like you were saying, it's not action scenes, but it's life-threatening moments over and over that he's got to escape.
24:21
SPEAKER_02: Um, and it also in some ways, like I I don't know if you got this vibe, but I kind of feel like it had like early James Bond type of feel to it.
24:29
SPEAKER_02: Sure, yeah, in some ways, and I find it interesting because three years later, Casino Royale, which I think was the no, sorry, Dr.
24:36
SPEAKER_02: No was made three years after this, and he was approached to be the first James Bond, as I understand it.
24:44
SPEAKER_00: I remember hearing that too.
24:45
SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, I wonder if some of these things play, but I I think it was good for him to turn stuff like that down because like roles like this, I just don't think work for him, like you were saying.
24:54
SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, and well, and of course, knowing the history now, it's kind of hard to think of Dr.
24:58
SPEAKER_00: No, that iconic introduction bond to James Bond at the Baccarat table not being Sean Connery, like right, right, exactly.
25:07
SPEAKER_02: I would say if I were to go with a Alfred Hitchcock movie and James Cagney, I mean sorry, and uh Kerry Grant being in it, I would say notorious is a far better version of that.
25:17
SPEAKER_02: It's a great movie.
25:19
SPEAKER_02: Um, so yeah, that's one of my older films that I was unfortunately disappointed with.
25:26
SPEAKER_02: Uh let's be uh actually interesting enough, on that, Chris Costman says I could put almost all of his flicks on my list.
25:32
SPEAKER_02: So Chris, are you saying all of Hitchcock's films?
25:36
SPEAKER_02: Not a fan of?
25:37
SPEAKER_00: Well, you're gonna say uh on the list as I don't like them, or is it hey, these were surprisingly good?
25:42
SPEAKER_02: Yes, and uh is Hitchcock or is it Kerry Grant?
25:45
SPEAKER_02: Curious, drop that down in the comments.
25:46
SPEAKER_02: Uh let us know.
25:47
SPEAKER_02: But uh what's what's your next one?
25:50
SPEAKER_00: Well, uh I'm going back in time again a little bit because you know I don't want to sound like you know, like the snootiest of snooties here with this, but you know, there's a lot of there's not a whole lot of movies that came out during my lifetime that are significant like pop culture things or you know examples of the art form that I haven't already seen.
26:12
SPEAKER_00: You know, there's a rare like the sand lot and stuff like that here and there, but for the most part, I've watched a lot of them.
26:19
SPEAKER_02: And and for so just as a bit of context for people who don't know either of us personally, at the shop, there's a game which we even played on this podcast called Bomb, and it tests your movie knowledge.
26:30
SPEAKER_02: Now, Curtis, for the most part, would always win because he has watched so many more movies than I have, but the level of which I can beat him at is movies made in the 30s and 40s.
26:40
SPEAKER_02: That's where like more of the films I have seen.
26:43
SPEAKER_02: So I think that's why I always enjoy talking movies with you because you'll be like, Oh, yeah, well, why haven't you seen that?
26:48
SPEAKER_02: I'm like, I I don't know.
26:50
SPEAKER_02: So yeah, so but Curtis has seen a lot of film.
26:53
SPEAKER_00: Well, and even then, with you know, um uh a lot of the older movies that I've watched recently, just because the way that my brain elasticity works now that I'm 47 and not 17 anymore, is that I will watch the movie once, and it's much easier now to unfortunately forget like who is in it or stuff like that.
27:14
SPEAKER_00: I have to I have to work harder to retain that information.
27:17
SPEAKER_00: Um, but this is one that came out during my lifetime, and it's it was never one that people thought was like a super great movie or everything, but it just seems like somebody everybody saw, and you know, pop culture would reference it all the time.
27:29
SPEAKER_00: So, uh a few months ago, I finally watched for the first time the John Candy classic Cool Runnings.
27:36
SPEAKER_00: What?
27:37
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I know.
27:38
SPEAKER_00: Really?
27:39
SPEAKER_02: Okay, so I actually uh I just showed that to my middle child about like a month ago because I grew up watching that movie, yeah.
27:47
SPEAKER_00: And I and I I obviously I didn't, um uh for whatever you know reason or combinations of reasons, I'd never gotten around to it.
27:55
SPEAKER_00: And um, you know what?
27:57
SPEAKER_00: I it's not gonna be like a perennial favorite that I put on all the time, but I was like, I had an I had an okay time with this.
28:04
SPEAKER_00: Like okay, it had it had a fun energy, I liked the cast.
28:09
SPEAKER_00: Um, I even I know this is based on the real history of the first Jamaican bobsled team, but um I think it's good in sports movies when uh the heroes you're cheering for don't win in the conventional sense that they've won the trophy or the medal or the whatever.
28:27
SPEAKER_00: Um, but uh they take away a uh a moral victory just by showing up and putting in the effort when everybody thought they should have never even bothered, and yeah, so um I appreciated that too.
28:41
SPEAKER_00: As a movie that's you know a relatively light, silly um uh you know, 90s comedy.
28:48
SPEAKER_00: The fact that they bothered to inject that little bit of heart and meaning into it at all, I was like, that's a movie.
28:54
SPEAKER_00: Good job.
28:55
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
28:56
SPEAKER_02: And I I mean, I I for a minute there, I thought you were gonna say you were not impressed with it.
29:00
SPEAKER_02: I was like, okay, here we have our first impasse.
29:03
SPEAKER_02: Um, I really appreciate the like micro victories that majority of the characters go through right in like the things that they have to fight over.
29:10
SPEAKER_02: And I think Junior is his name, who's got the overbearing father.
29:14
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um, I like his story arc, I like how he becomes friends with the guy that he tripped up during the race.
29:20
SPEAKER_02: Um, the whole dynamic there is great.
29:22
SPEAKER_02: And John Candy, uh, I don't know.
29:26
SPEAKER_02: I I really appreciate it some of the roles he's chosen.
29:29
SPEAKER_02: Um, he did a great job.
29:30
SPEAKER_02: I love that movie.
29:32
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and you know, like I said, it is it is intentionally uh silly, and it does um, you know, uh change up the the history.
29:40
SPEAKER_00: In fact, I think the the characters don't even share the names with the real people that were involved in that Jamaican bobsled team, and that's probably for the better, you know.
29:50
SPEAKER_00: Even though you know, uh you know, if you're gonna do a drama where you wanted to tell this story, you would want to be absolutely truthful.
29:56
SPEAKER_00: But because this is trying to be, you know, kind of a silly thing and poking a little bit of fun while also um you know uh earnestly um admiring their their gumption to do it at all, um, probably best to slightly fictionalize the the lives of the people so you don't run into any.
30:16
SPEAKER_02: Especially when you get you have great moments like when they first arrive and they all come out of the airport and then they run all back in and they get all changed in the airport and stuff like that.
30:24
SPEAKER_02: Great moments, great moments.
30:26
SPEAKER_02: Um, okay.
30:27
SPEAKER_02: So a few follow-up comments to what we were talking about earlier.
30:29
SPEAKER_02: Uh, one Silva's on.
30:31
SPEAKER_02: Brian Silva's saying, watching uh at my break at work.
30:34
SPEAKER_02: So thanks for hanging out with us.
30:36
SPEAKER_02: Uh Chris says the there can only be one bond, and it's Connery.
30:40
SPEAKER_02: Um, the gentleman he was real uh talking about was Woody Allen would be on my list of I don't get it, um, just across the board.
30:49
SPEAKER_00: So yeah, that makes sense.
30:51
SPEAKER_00: I mean, uh, and I, you know, I certainly haven't seen uh a lot of his films, but I've seen a handful of them, and I think that broadly I'm in the same the same boat where it's like you know, for whatever whatever thing it is that he's got going that people admire him for, I'm not one of them.
31:07
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
31:09
SPEAKER_02: Um Jason is saying the remake of Music Man starring Matthew Broderick, we didn't make it 30 minutes in.
31:16
SPEAKER_02: I have a whole diatribe about the original music man, but uh Mallory and I have gotten into conflict of that before because she loves that.
31:23
SPEAKER_00: Did you talk about the the film with uh Robert Preston?
31:25
SPEAKER_02: Yes, yes.
31:27
SPEAKER_02: I this comes from someone I really actually do enjoy musicals.
31:31
SPEAKER_02: I enjoy a lot of musicals, and I watched that for the first time and I did not get it, but there you go.
31:37
SPEAKER_02: Uh Brian says John Candy was amazing as barf in space balls.
31:42
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um, this is gonna sound like heresy.
31:44
SPEAKER_02: I didn't really make it all the way through space balls, I couldn't.
31:48
SPEAKER_02: It's not my cup of tea.
31:50
SPEAKER_00: I I have kind of a uh uh uh uh a theory about a lot of those um movies that do that whole um parody farce kind of thing, you know, with specifically like lampooning pop culture.
32:07
SPEAKER_00: Sure, is that you either need to see them immediately hot off the press, right?
32:12
SPEAKER_00: You know, in the era that it came out, okay, you know, the the the parody is fresh, or I hate to say this because it sounds so judgmental, but or you need to be in that like you know, 10-year-old to 14-year-old uh adolescent, you know, sense of humor mindset for a lot of the jokes to work for you.
32:34
SPEAKER_00: Outside of those two scenarios, sometimes those things can be really rough.
32:38
SPEAKER_00: So even though I have seen space balls many times and I do consider it a movie that I like, I can put on the other hat and be like, I can see why somebody would be like, what?
32:48
SPEAKER_00: No, what no, no, no, no, no.
32:50
SPEAKER_02: Okay, so real quick before we uh rant a bit more, uh, let's talk a little bit about the brownie trout from Lure.
32:58
SPEAKER_02: Um, I would say across the board, this is a medium strength Maduro to me.
33:02
SPEAKER_02: I don't think it's too crazy strong, but it's really flavorful.
33:06
SPEAKER_02: Like, this is a tasty Maduro cigar.
33:09
SPEAKER_00: I'm getting a very specific flavor off of it now, and it's not just any old chocolate chip cookie, it's specifically the Nestle Tollhouse recipe chocolate chip cookie.
33:20
SPEAKER_00: Maybe even more, maybe even more the cookie part than the chocolate part, if that makes sense.
33:25
SPEAKER_02: I can I can see where you're going with it because for me, that creaminess is tasting more like a milk chocolate to me.
33:32
SPEAKER_02: I know we talk a lot on this show about like a Maduro that's oh, this is dark chocolate and espresso and blah blah blah.
33:37
SPEAKER_02: This is like a milk chocolate.
33:38
SPEAKER_02: It it's very, if anything, like if there is a bitter note in this, it's so faint, I'm not getting really any of it.
33:45
SPEAKER_02: Um, good sweetness, and then that bready component, if that's what you're talking about in terms of kind of like that cookie element, I can see where you're going with that for sure.
33:53
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and then I mean, like to me, another component of not just like you know, a lot of cookies in general, but like specifically the with the way my memory of that toll house cookie tastes, is that it's there's a fair amount of salt in that recipe for those cookies, and I feel like that's part of what I'm picking up on this.
34:11
SPEAKER_02: I think it's pretty aptly named the brownie trout because it's literally spelled brownie.
34:16
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there you go.
34:17
SPEAKER_02: So, yeah, no, it's pretty good.
34:18
SPEAKER_02: So that second third here, good sweetness coming through.
34:21
SPEAKER_02: Uh, still really good, clean finish.
34:22
SPEAKER_02: So we'll see as we continue on.
34:24
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um, I want to shift it a little bit and talk about a movie that really surprised me how much I enjoyed it.
34:31
SPEAKER_02: Um, I think we've talked about this before, and I think it's gonna make you happy.
34:35
SPEAKER_02: But a movie that I was told you have to watch this, and I did, and it's made it into my like top list, however many is Drive.
34:45
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that is a movie that I did not expect to enjoy as much as I did.
34:50
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, uh well, for me, I remember when that movie was coming out in theaters, I was I was hyped to see it, but I had a different impression of what it was gonna be, and this is what marketing does, right?
35:00
SPEAKER_00: The trailer made it look like it was gonna be a slightly elevated, fast and the furious type of thing, and that's not really what that movie is.
35:09
SPEAKER_00: No, it's blending, you know, even stuff as as you know, kind of far back as Clint Eastwood's Man with No Name, you know, with this nameless, kind of taciturn, mostly silent protagonist.
35:23
SPEAKER_00: Um, he has no name, he's just called the driver in the film.
35:27
SPEAKER_00: Um, but there's also elements of like these um you know, sort of B-movie uh um uh kind of trashy thriller-ish things from the 70s, eight and eighties, like The Driver with Ryan O'Neill.
35:42
SPEAKER_00: There's a little bit of uh um this film from a French film from the 60s called Le Samurai.
35:47
SPEAKER_00: It's just like blending together all of this like stuff that um almost relies more on tone than it does on plot or or even character necessarily.
35:58
SPEAKER_00: And for whatever combination of elements, Ryan Gosling's performance, the way the film is shot, the music selection, that movie just hit my wavelength like crazy, and I loved it after I stepped out of the theater the first time.
36:10
SPEAKER_02: Yes, and and I think I mean, yeah, Stellar cast with also uh with having uh Oscar Isaacs in it, um, and Kerry Mulligan and Albert Brooks, Ron Pearlman, just like overall, just a fantastic uh cast.
36:25
SPEAKER_02: But it really is a I feel like a masterclass in being able to tell a not just understandable narrative, but a really interesting narrative with minimal dialogue and the images chosen and the music chosen, just really like the vision in this movie is really clear, and I really appreciate certain directors who can execute a vision that it just comes together in this very seamless execution, and that's what that movie is to me.
36:51
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um, I agree.
36:52
SPEAKER_02: I mean, there's I think even it's kind of like when you I got glad you brought up like man with no name.
36:57
SPEAKER_02: If you watch the good, the bad, the ugly, there's like no dialogue for the first 15 minutes, I think.
37:01
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, something like that.
37:03
SPEAKER_02: Very similar.
37:04
SPEAKER_02: There is dialogue, but it's so minimal for the first beginning of this movie.
37:08
SPEAKER_02: Some of the most impactful moments, like the elevator scene, is set to no dialogue.
37:12
SPEAKER_02: You're just watching three characters interact on screen set to music in a romantic sense, in a violent, violent sense, and a beautifully cinematography execution.
37:22
SPEAKER_02: So it's a masterclass in that.
37:24
SPEAKER_02: I think it's an amazing movie.
37:26
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, and there's there's a lot of great moments where uh again, it's that whole like show-don't tell thing that we love so much here on CNC, where um there's a scene kind of midway, uh, more probably more like uh towards the end of the first act, where the driver is at a diner, and um this guy who recognizes him from having worked on a job with him previously sits down to him next to him at the diner and is like, hey man, remember me, want to talk.
37:52
SPEAKER_00: You know, he wants to like strike up a conversation, and the way the driver reacts so negatively to that guy trying to give him attention in public, just his the look on his face and what he says tells you everything you need to know about how he feels and what they must have done together, right?
38:08
SPEAKER_02: So exactly and stuff, and I think too, the it's one of those movies where the camera is a character as well, the way it's used, and it's great.
38:16
SPEAKER_02: So, uh, let's see here.
38:17
SPEAKER_02: A few comments.
38:18
SPEAKER_02: Chris uh is saying drive checked all almost all boxes, which I agree.
38:23
SPEAKER_02: Um, he wants to know, too, was that the variety pack with the lure last month?
38:27
SPEAKER_02: Yes, this was in the Maduro pack, the brownie trout.
38:31
SPEAKER_00: I was in the yeah, this is literally the last one from that pack that was tonight.
38:35
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
38:35
SPEAKER_02: Jason says, really love seeing Lord of the Rings for the first time at the uh Cinerama Dome.
38:41
SPEAKER_02: I was hooked.
38:42
SPEAKER_02: I think you and I have talked about that before.
38:44
SPEAKER_02: When I was younger, I did not like Lord of the Rings, and then I quickly discovered Lord of the Rings is kind of like Disneyland to me.
38:52
SPEAKER_02: If you watch it alone, my personal experience, I was like, eh, I don't know why I'm here, I don't know what I'm doing.
38:58
SPEAKER_02: You watch it with your kids, and you're like, okay, this is really special.
39:01
SPEAKER_02: So I I think Lord of the Rings is great at this point.
39:04
SPEAKER_00: That movie was also a big deal to me because I was 23, I think, when that came out, uh that that this that December of 2001.
39:12
SPEAKER_00: And uh I had grown up as a a fan of the fantasy genre, not just in cinema, but in in kind of everything, you know.
39:20
SPEAKER_00: If there was like magic and swords and orcs and all, like I was yes, I'm I'm I'm bought in like 70 already.
39:27
SPEAKER_00: But there was so much about um uh particularly cinema, uh, in that genre from the decades prior, where yeah, you would get the the dude with the sword fighting cool things and there was magic, but you had to forgive almost everything else, like you know.
39:41
SPEAKER_00: You're talking about Willow, you're talking about production design, yeah.
39:44
SPEAKER_00: Cheap production.
39:45
SPEAKER_00: Well, no, Willow, I think Willow is pretty strong, but you know, just cheap production design.
39:48
SPEAKER_00: I'm talking about movies like Beastmaster and even Arnold Arnold's Conan films and you know, various legend with Tom Cruise.
39:56
SPEAKER_00: Right, yeah, yeah.
39:57
SPEAKER_00: Where you know, it's just like you know, it's it's a it's a weird, like, you know, um uh like fever dream, or you know, just like you know, like, oh, this is the best actors they could pay for, sure.
40:08
SPEAKER_00: I guess fine, whatever.
40:10
SPEAKER_00: And uh um Fellowship of the Ring, after it finished, I'm sitting there kind of gobsmacked in the theater.
40:17
SPEAKER_00: I was like, I I don't have to forgive any of this.
40:21
SPEAKER_00: Like it had strong actors, great pathos.
40:24
SPEAKER_00: I mean, I think that it's arguable that um the film improves Boromir's death scene with how good the performances and dialogue is when he says, My brother, my captain, my king before he dies.
40:38
SPEAKER_00: It's like that scene is so amazing.
40:40
SPEAKER_00: So, like, yeah, and the production design was great, the music by Howard Shore, cost like I mean, everything in that movie was kind of top tier.
40:48
SPEAKER_00: Um, so yeah, that that one hit me like a ton of bricks, even though I wanted it and uh thought that it would be good, it was like even more special than I was expecting.
40:58
SPEAKER_02: Curious, out of the trilogy, do you have a favorite?
41:02
SPEAKER_02: It's fellowship.
41:03
SPEAKER_00: I like them all, but fellowship is my favorite.
41:05
SPEAKER_02: I I agree 100% because we uh when we go went through them, it was majority of the votes was uh was return of the king.
41:13
SPEAKER_02: And I mean they're all good, but I'm like there's something special about fellowship that is still my favorite, but yeah, I agree.
41:20
SPEAKER_02: Um but let's go back to one of the ones on your list.
41:24
SPEAKER_00: Um this is an interesting one.
41:28
SPEAKER_00: I'm going way back in time here to the silent era because again, as a guy who was you know not only liked movies but wanted to be somebody who um understood the history of the art form as like it matters to me that I you know go back and check out stuff that say, hey, this was one of the greatest movies from the era kind of thing.
41:49
SPEAKER_00: And at the time I watched this, I had not seen very many, maybe only a couple Charlie Chaplin films, but I had always heard, always read that one of the greatest films uh of that era and that he made was a film called Modern Times.
42:04
SPEAKER_00: And um I wasn't prepared for how much I liked that one.
42:08
SPEAKER_02: Um really okay.
42:10
SPEAKER_00: The um I think the uh comedy crisscrossed with its social commentary about classism and capitalism, you know, having to be a worker still feels relevant today.
42:25
SPEAKER_00: Um, it is funny.
42:26
SPEAKER_00: I kind of low key fell in love with Paulette Goddard, Goddard.
42:30
SPEAKER_00: I don't I don't remember the the the action.
42:32
SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, yes or last name.
42:34
SPEAKER_00: Who's kind of like the you know, Chaplin's films as the tramp, he's always got you know some girl that he's trying to win her affection over, right?
42:41
SPEAKER_00: You know, that's kind of like one almost the standards of his.
42:43
SPEAKER_00: But I thought she was lovely and charming in that movie.
42:47
SPEAKER_00: Um, modern times is I was like, okay, sure, one of the greatest movies ever made, black and white, Charlie Chaplin.
42:53
SPEAKER_00: Sure, bring it on.
42:54
SPEAKER_00: But I really liked that one.
42:56
SPEAKER_02: Did you know that Paulette actually married Charlie Chaplin?
43:00
SPEAKER_00: I think I did read that, yeah.
43:02
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and it was actually the year that movie came out.
43:04
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that sounds about right.
43:06
SPEAKER_02: And um, that's honestly probably the the Chaplin film I have the most exposure to.
43:11
SPEAKER_02: Um, and I I will, I mean, full confession, his type of humor is was never really my type of humor.
43:17
SPEAKER_00: I'm still more of a Buster Keaton guy than I am a Chaplin guy, but yeah, yeah, yeah.
43:21
SPEAKER_02: And I mean, no, I do appreciate, I think that's a great pick.
43:24
SPEAKER_02: Um, I I always I think lean towards like Mark's brothers, Abbott, and Costello, but um yeah, no, that's definitely you see a lot of um basically, I feel like during that time when it came to musicals and comedy specifically, you had so much vaudeville and Broadway crossover, and of like, how can we execute this type of thing in film?
43:47
SPEAKER_02: And I think that's the time where it started changing and being like, This is more unique to movie making, yeah, than on that.
43:54
SPEAKER_00: So it's it's the one it's the one for me that if someone says they haven't heard of or hasn't Haven't seen Charlie Chaplin before.
44:02
SPEAKER_00: If you want to pick from any of his, like, you know, sort of most notable films, like City Lights or Gold Rush or anything like that, I'm like, watch modern times.
44:11
SPEAKER_00: That's the one.
44:12
SPEAKER_02: Okay.
44:12
SPEAKER_00: If you just want to understand Charlie Chaplin and you know, maybe get the best version of him.
44:17
SPEAKER_00: I I think that's the one to see.
44:19
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
44:19
SPEAKER_02: Nice.
44:20
SPEAKER_02: Um, can't see Brian Silva saying, uh, also once upon a time in the west.
44:25
SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's also on my list.
44:27
SPEAKER_02: Okay.
44:28
SPEAKER_02: As good or bad.
44:29
SPEAKER_00: Uh, you know what?
44:30
SPEAKER_00: That that one's a it's it's kind of rides the line.
44:33
SPEAKER_00: Um, because uh, you know, that's another it's Sergio Leone, I think, right?
44:38
SPEAKER_00: That that made that one.
44:40
SPEAKER_02: Yes, but I actually this is one I have not seen that he's done.
44:43
SPEAKER_00: It is in a lot of ways a remarkable um uh western with uh the the scope of it, and you know, there are some iconic level shots and sequences in that movie that you know will kind of stick in my brain forever.
44:58
SPEAKER_00: But storytelling-wise, it's a little loose and a little weird, like there's um uh a whole plot where um Peter Fonda plays the um villain.
45:08
SPEAKER_00: I'm sorry, Peter, no, Henry Fonda.
45:10
SPEAKER_00: Henry Fonda plays the villain, and um at the start of the movie, he's done something awful to the the female protagonist-ish character in the film, and that at some point later, kind of like in the middle of it, him and her end up in bed together, and it felt so arbitrary.
45:27
SPEAKER_00: I was like, I movie, you're not justifying this character turn at all.
45:32
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it just kind of does some of these weird things that was hard for me to roll with, so that's one where um you know it has this outsized reputation in the genre and you know, major stars in it and stuff like that.
45:45
SPEAKER_00: And I came away feeling really conflicted about it.
45:48
SPEAKER_02: Okay, okay.
45:50
SPEAKER_02: I've always I've never been a Henry Fonda fan, to be honest.
45:53
SPEAKER_02: I mean, he did good in the 12 Angry Men, but I don't know.
45:56
SPEAKER_02: He's always uh on what we were talking about.
45:59
SPEAKER_02: Chris says duck soup is one of the greatest comedies ever put to film.
46:03
SPEAKER_02: Oh no, and I know that you and I I could not believe it.
46:07
SPEAKER_02: So duck soup, I do not have on either list because I'm like this can't qualify, like it is so rooted in.
46:13
SPEAKER_02: I mean, I was probably six years old, seven years old when I first watched that movie.
46:17
SPEAKER_02: I've seen it probably 20 times.
46:18
SPEAKER_02: I loved it, and I remember your review, and I couldn't believe it.
46:22
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, that came up when we were discussing uh Caddyshack because I was like, you know, um uh um oh gosh, why Ronnie Dangerfield is just doing a warmed over Groucho Marks routine, and then I saw duck soup, and I was like, Oh, this feels like a warmed over Groucho Marks routine, too.
46:40
SPEAKER_00: So yeah, what whatever it is about that style of jokes, it's just it's not on my wavelength.
46:46
SPEAKER_00: I don't know what else to say.
46:47
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I I yeah, we'll we'll we'll leave that one right there.
46:51
SPEAKER_00: My favorite bit in that movie was I forget which brother is it Harpo, maybe where he's doing the thing in the doorway.
46:58
SPEAKER_02: Yes, heart, yeah.
46:59
SPEAKER_02: Harpo and and Groucho do it, yeah, yeah.
47:02
SPEAKER_00: I thought that was clever.
47:04
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, there's just it's definitely zany comedy, but uh I I Chris, I'm on the same wavelength.
47:11
SPEAKER_02: I love that movie.
47:13
SPEAKER_02: Um, okay.
47:14
SPEAKER_02: You had mentioned uh like Once Upon a Time in the West, of it leaving you a bit confused uh in sort of moments like that.
47:22
SPEAKER_02: The movie that I was like, I'm not seeing why everyone loves this movie is one flew over the cuckoo's nest.
47:31
SPEAKER_02: I have a big issue with kind of Nicholson's character and kind of what he's supposed to have done in the past and be there, and also just kind of the revolution that he tried to tries to lead.
47:43
SPEAKER_02: I'm just like, whatever whatever key this is supposed to be striking on the piano, it's not it's not working for me, right?
47:50
SPEAKER_00: I I think you know, I mean, uh, I'm not a super deep film historian.
47:55
SPEAKER_00: I have seen that movie, although it has been quite a while.
47:58
SPEAKER_00: It's been like 20 years or more since I watched uh Cuckoo's Nest.
48:02
SPEAKER_00: Uh so you know the details of the plot are a little hazy to me, but thematically, uh, I think you know, part of what that made that film resonate and or feel special to people at the time was that it was among a uh a group of sort of anti-establishment or anti-yeah or or I should say counterculture type things where it's like you know, there's all these traditional ideas about what human experience or the human experience as American is supposed to be like.
48:32
SPEAKER_00: And these movies are kind of like, no, we need to appreciate the weirdos and the outcasts and the the people who are kind of like marching to the beat of their own drummer.
48:42
SPEAKER_00: I'm talking about films like uh Herald and Maud and Clockwork Orange and stuff like that, that all kind of fit into that sort of uh counterculture-ish uh thing.
48:51
SPEAKER_00: Maybe even Easy Rider could fit in there.
48:53
SPEAKER_00: So I think that's probably part of what made Cuckoo's Nest a big deal to uh audiences at the time.
48:59
SPEAKER_00: But um, I don't know that I share your sentiments exactly, but again, I said I haven't watched it in over 20 years.
49:04
SPEAKER_00: There's probably a reason that I haven't watched it again.
49:07
SPEAKER_02: It's it's one of those movies that um I I would be hard pressed to find, like, oh yeah, this was done really poorly, and this was done really poorly, and this movie sucks.
49:17
SPEAKER_02: But it was just kind of like falling on deaf ears, I guess, where I was just like, I'm just not picking up why this is such a standout.
49:25
SPEAKER_02: Uh so I was pretty disappointed with it, and for that, it got on the list.
49:29
SPEAKER_02: I understand.
49:30
SPEAKER_02: Um, Jason says, I remember talking to Curtis uh at the shop about Excalibur.
49:35
SPEAKER_02: I think he hated it, and I was shocked.
49:37
SPEAKER_00: I do hate Excalibur, which is a funny thing to say, because like I said, I'm usually I'm I'm kind of like a sucker for anything that is fantasy adjacent, and that movie definitely is trying to tell the story of uh uh you know King Arthur.
49:52
SPEAKER_00: And I watched it once all the way through in my early 20s, and I was just like, ew, this is not it doesn't resonate with me.
50:00
SPEAKER_00: There's like this weird, like glamour shots, like soft filter almost like half of the photography, and a lot of the performances really feel kind of like um flat.
50:10
SPEAKER_00: Um, there's the guy that plays Merlin.
50:13
SPEAKER_00: Oh shoot, what's his name?
50:14
SPEAKER_00: Is it Nigel?
50:16
SPEAKER_00: I I'm not gonna remember.
50:18
SPEAKER_00: Um, and uh, you know, so many people that like that kind of movie just kept talking it up.
50:25
SPEAKER_00: I was like, you know what?
50:26
SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna give this another shot.
50:27
SPEAKER_00: You know, 20-year-old me maybe was kind of stupid, so let's watch it again.
50:31
SPEAKER_00: And I I cued it up probably within the last five years.
50:34
SPEAKER_00: I got about 30 minutes into it, and I was like, Nope, feel the same thing.
50:38
SPEAKER_00: It's not this is not hitting for me.
50:40
SPEAKER_00: It's it's too too clunky.
50:43
SPEAKER_00: I think the guy they cast to play, Arthur, is borderline terrible.
50:48
SPEAKER_02: Um Nigel Terry.
50:50
SPEAKER_00: Nigel Terry, yeah.
50:51
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, um, so yeah, that that movie doesn't hit for me.
50:55
SPEAKER_00: Sorry, Jason.
50:57
SPEAKER_02: Okay, so I think we have time for probably about two more movies, whether good, whether bad.
51:03
SPEAKER_02: Uh what do you got?
51:06
SPEAKER_00: Uh let's end up on a positive note.
51:09
SPEAKER_00: One that not only that I really liked, but one that I think people should see.
51:13
SPEAKER_00: Um, and this isn't a movie that I had particularly strong expectations for, other than just knowing it was one of those that always shows up on like this is one of the best, you know, movies of the era, you know, you should watch it.
51:25
SPEAKER_00: And that's all about Eve.
51:28
SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
51:30
SPEAKER_00: Um not only is it like, you know, borderline and an unimpeachable cast, you know, fantastically performance.
51:39
SPEAKER_00: Um uh it has what maybe is one of my favorite scripts of any movie that I've ever seen.
51:47
SPEAKER_00: The the the the nuance and the the vinegar and you know, kind of uh um uh uh anger and disappointment built into uh the story and the way that it's told.
52:00
SPEAKER_00: I I think it's probably a masterpiece.
52:02
SPEAKER_00: I think all about Eve is fantastic.
52:05
SPEAKER_02: I mean, and I think too for Betty Davis being nine in the 1950s, I mean there's a lot of movies I really enjoy from her, and majority of them are from the 30s.
52:15
SPEAKER_02: Um, but yeah, no, Stellar Cast for sure.
52:19
SPEAKER_02: That's a good pick for sure.
52:21
SPEAKER_02: Um Chris says because caliber sucked, it took me took one of the great stories and killed it.
52:28
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, see, I agree.
52:30
SPEAKER_02: There you go.
52:31
SPEAKER_00: I still have not seen what I think anything that qualifies as a good King Arthur movie.
52:36
SPEAKER_00: They've made several attempts.
52:37
SPEAKER_00: There was that really bad one that Guy Ritchie made a few years ago.
52:40
SPEAKER_00: There's the um I avoided it.
52:42
SPEAKER_00: There was the one with Sean Connery and Richard Gere called First Night from the late 90s.
52:48
SPEAKER_00: That was pretty awful too.
52:50
SPEAKER_00: Like, I they for such a classic story, nobody's made a good film version, unless there's something from the you know uh uh um you know golden age that I haven't seen yet, because there very well could be, but of the ones I'm familiar with, they're not hidden.
53:04
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, not to my knowledge.
53:05
SPEAKER_02: It's kind of the curse of Robin Hood.
53:07
SPEAKER_02: Like, there are so few good Robin Hood movies out there, maybe only one.
53:11
SPEAKER_02: So, yeah.
53:12
SPEAKER_00: I mean, I I I because I'm a 90s kid, I do still love the uh Costner one, but it's it's got lots of problems.
53:19
SPEAKER_00: The Errol Flynn, the Errol Flynn version is where it's at.
53:22
SPEAKER_02: That movie's great, yeah, yeah, yeah.
53:24
SPEAKER_02: Um, I would say finishing for me, I don't want to sound like a broken record, but this movie I had good expectations for, but it made it into my like top 10 movies of all time, and that is There Will Be Blood.
53:36
SPEAKER_02: I think, I think for me, out of the Thomas Anderson films I've watched, it's definitely my favorite.
53:42
SPEAKER_02: When it comes down to the elements of music and acting, and it is a very long movie, but it's one of those movies that anytime, almost anytime, someone's like, Hey, I want to watch this movie, I am down for it.
53:53
SPEAKER_02: I think um it's one one of those films too, to where like the dialogue is great, but when you have it with Daniel Day Lewis and Paul Dano and how they interact with one another, it just achieves something above the average movie for me.
54:08
SPEAKER_02: And I think it's fantastic.
54:10
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, one of the things that that I remember about that too is that so much of what makes the movie um have the particular tone and feel that it does is how much it lives in the sort of duality and ambiguity of uh those two lead characters, Paul Dano and uh um uh Dano Day Lewis.
54:32
SPEAKER_00: You know, there's just a lot of uh, you know having this motivation, but pretending to do this thing instead to try to achieve the thing.
54:43
SPEAKER_00: And you know, there's a lot of just like looking into the dark recesses of you know human motivations to achieve whatever in that movie.
54:52
SPEAKER_00: It's yeah, it's good.
54:54
SPEAKER_02: And it it has that that pulling of two forces where you're not really rooting for either one.
54:59
SPEAKER_02: I think uh another movie that kind of had that was like something like The Prestige, when you're like neither one of these people are technically good, yeah, but for sure conflict is so interesting, and the the execution in so many moments are so interesting that I just it hooked me, and I'm like, this is just excellent.
55:15
SPEAKER_02: Love it.
55:16
SPEAKER_02: I agree.
55:16
SPEAKER_02: Um, okay, so let's talk final third on the brownie trout.
55:20
SPEAKER_02: Um, I'm still getting a fair amount of breadiness, a fair amount of sweetness, um, still minimal bitterness at all.
55:26
SPEAKER_02: I don't know if you're getting any bitter notes to it.
55:28
SPEAKER_00: I feel like that's that's ramped up a little bit for me.
55:31
SPEAKER_00: That was actually I was gonna comment on that.
55:35
SPEAKER_02: I still find it's it's palette at the end clean.
55:37
SPEAKER_02: A lot of people, I've even talked to some people, they're like, I only smoke lighter cigars.
55:42
SPEAKER_02: Um, I only smoke kind of like mild, because I don't like to have that like ashy flavor on the palate afterwards or when I wake up.
55:50
SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, this is kind of if you want to dabble into something that's gonna be still cleaner, but a bit more oomph and heaviness is a great example of that.
55:57
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I agree.
55:59
SPEAKER_02: Um, see here.
56:01
SPEAKER_02: Uh Jason's saying, love this episode.
56:05
SPEAKER_02: Awesome.
56:05
SPEAKER_02: Says, absolutely love a clerks.
56:07
SPEAKER_02: I think uh that the shoestring budget it kills.
56:11
SPEAKER_00: That was another one for you, Eric.
56:13
SPEAKER_02: That was that was that was a movie I thought I was going to have to like power on through.
56:18
SPEAKER_02: That was a great movie, great movie, and possibly too the movie that you recommended watching that I have laughed the hardest at.
56:27
SPEAKER_00: Right.
56:28
SPEAKER_02: Because yeah, so there you go.
56:30
SPEAKER_00: Because all my all of my other good recommendations are just the 90s films that you hate.
56:36
SPEAKER_02: No, I have I have learned, I feel like I when it comes to m watching comedies for the first time, I don't know what it is, but it's hard for me to like loudly laugh at something.
56:47
SPEAKER_02: I'll I'll be like, okay, but for some reason, just I think there are moments in that movie that just I let lost.
56:53
SPEAKER_00: Well, I I've talked about this a bunch before, but I think one of the key ingredients with comedy working is the element of surprise and that the characters do or say something that you weren't expecting.
57:04
SPEAKER_00: And I think Clarks has a lot of that.
57:06
SPEAKER_00: I think it's the first time you watch it.
57:08
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and it started, I think, with his conversation with his girlfriend when she walks out.
57:13
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, there's there's several moments like that in that sequence for sure.
57:17
SPEAKER_02: It's great.
57:18
SPEAKER_02: Um, but before we sign off, we need to uh sign off on a vote on a scale from one to ten where Brownie Trout lies.
57:28
SPEAKER_02: Gonna go ahead and mark this down.
57:38
SPEAKER_02: Here we go.
57:39
SPEAKER_02: All right, you got 7.5, I got 7.8.
57:42
SPEAKER_02: Pretty close.
57:43
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, pretty, pretty close.
57:45
SPEAKER_02: Uh, definitely check out this cigar if you guys have not tried it.
57:47
SPEAKER_02: If you want to try a Maduro with something a little more uh sweeter side, less bitter side, really good cigar.
57:54
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think this is another one that's could maybe fit into that category of like transitional if you're just kind of dipping your toe into um Maduro or slightly more aggressive uh flavored cigars.
58:06
SPEAKER_00: This would be a good one to go for.
58:07
SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
58:08
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's not overwhelming at all.
58:10
SPEAKER_02: Um, okay, so next week we'll be back with the new variety pack.
58:14
SPEAKER_02: We're gonna be smoking through these.
58:15
SPEAKER_02: Everyone, a part of the OGT variety.
58:17
SPEAKER_02: We are sending this five pack out to you tomorrow, which we're super excited for.
58:21
SPEAKER_02: And then we start a new uh genre, and then and actually, this was Curtis's pick.
58:26
SPEAKER_02: So, Curtis, what are we watching next week?
58:28
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, um, and it's something that unless I'm forgetting, I don't believe this genre has been touched on much in annals of cigars and cinema, but we're gonna do some gangster flicks kicking off with um Brian De Palma's The Untouchables.
58:44
SPEAKER_00: So there we go.
58:45
SPEAKER_00: I'd watch it or revisit it or whatever, and that's what we're talking about next week.
58:50
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I'm hoping.
58:51
SPEAKER_02: I mean, I don't want to like lose the audience or anything, but I kind of feel like if we're tackling gangster movies, we kind of need to watch something with Edward G.
59:00
SPEAKER_02: Robinson.
59:01
SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm 100% down for that.
59:03
SPEAKER_02: I okay, because there's some favorites that I have, so maybe that'll be one of my picks.
59:06
SPEAKER_02: Let's do it.
59:07
SPEAKER_02: Um, thank you guys for jumping on tonight and hanging out.
59:10
SPEAKER_02: Great show, Curtis.
59:11
SPEAKER_02: Thanks for jumping on as well, and we'll be back next week.
59:14
SPEAKER_02: Good night, y'all.
59:15
SPEAKER_02: We'll see you.
