- 0:26Speaker 2: Welcome to Meet Eater Radio Live. It's eleven am Mountain Time.
- 0:30Speaker 2: That's nine pm for our friends in Daresalam, Tanzania on
- 0:34Speaker 2: Thursday November twentieth, twenty twenty five. Wish I had written
- 0:40Speaker 2: that out instead of having to go just by the
- 0:41Speaker 2: numerical slash thing.
- 0:43Speaker 3: You nailed it.
- 0:44Speaker 2: We're live from Media HQ and Bozeman, Montana. I'm your host, Randall,
- 0:48Speaker 2: joined today by my dear friends and colleagues, mister Corey Calkins,
- 0:52Speaker 2: mister Seth Morris. Howdy, folks, We've got a great show
- 0:55Speaker 2: for you today. We're gonna be talking to Franz Inglefinger
- 0:58Speaker 2: and elk researcher with Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks. We've
- 1:02Speaker 2: got an interview with Derek de Munn, who shot an
- 1:05Speaker 2: exploding deer. More on that in a bit. We've got
- 1:08Speaker 2: a hot tip off, and we're debuting a brand new segment,
- 1:11Speaker 2: very exciting stuff, folks, called Meat Theater. It's an innovative
- 1:15Speaker 2: concept that I think will perform poorly, but there's a
- 1:19Speaker 2: small fraction of you that will really like it.
- 1:21Speaker 4: We're all really excited about it.
- 1:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:24Speaker 2: First things first, we need to tell you about our

- 2:44Speaker 3: Wow.
- 2:44Speaker 4: Yeah, there's fifty dollars daily prizes, and then there's the
- 2:47Speaker 4: overall five hundred dollars gift card.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Just by submitting a photo and somebody's gonna be we'll
- 2:52Speaker 2: pick the winner sitting high on the there's.
- 2:53Speaker 3: Some good photos in there already, I know.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I've heard good things.
- 2:56Speaker 3: Let's scroll through them this morning.
- 2:57Speaker 4: It's going to be tough to pick a winner.
- 2:58Speaker 2: But fellas, I'm happy to have you here today on
- 3:01Speaker 2: another Thursday. Happy to be here, but just wondering what
- 3:04Speaker 2: you've been up to recently. This is the part of
- 3:08Speaker 2: the show where we discuss our what we've been up
- 3:10Speaker 2: to casually.
- 3:12Speaker 3: I kind of can't chat.
- 3:13Speaker 5: I can't really function mentally until I kill a deer
- 3:16Speaker 5: m And that's where I'm at right now.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Oh, this should be a good show, Yeah, Cory.
- 3:23Speaker 4: Yeah, I killed an elk last week, which I'm pretty
- 3:25Speaker 4: tickled about. Full so now it's time for me to
- 3:28Speaker 4: go deer hunting.
- 3:29Speaker 3: Yeah, there you go.
- 3:30Speaker 2: That was a weird, weird bowl.
- 3:32Speaker 4: Yeah, he's funky. He's got five on one side and
- 3:35Speaker 4: then just a big black club that hangs down on
- 3:38Speaker 4: the other. I think his mother kicked him when he
- 3:40Speaker 4: dropped out of her womb.
- 3:41Speaker 2: And he's got like a real tall time on that
- 3:44Speaker 2: side as well, don't want.
- 3:45Speaker 3: To call it.
- 3:45Speaker 4: His brow tie sticks up very strangely up and then
- 3:48Speaker 4: the main beam just goes straight down and it's all
- 3:51Speaker 4: black from just the blood gravity falling out. Man, he's cool,
- 3:55Speaker 4: that's cool. He's a snowflake, very unique. Yeah, and he
- 3:58Speaker 4: tastes so good and eating him up last couple of nights.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Yeah, he was, he young, I'd say it was four. Yeah,
- 4:07Speaker 2: I had to guess.
- 4:08Speaker 4: I'd ever asked him.
- 4:10Speaker 3: Milk is like chewing on a damn boot.
- 4:12Speaker 5: Oh no, really, I don't know why, but my goodness,
- 4:17Speaker 5: you got to get out the meat mallet if you
- 4:19Speaker 5: want to do any sort of steak.
- 4:21Speaker 2: I did a little freezer filling of my own last
- 4:24Speaker 2: night night last night.
- 4:26Speaker 3: Yeah, you didn't tell us about this.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Right before I went to work, our rooster was pecking
- 4:32Speaker 2: one of our other chickens to death, so I put
- 4:35Speaker 2: her in solitary confinement to let the wound heal up.
- 4:39Speaker 2: I see what was going and went home last night
- 4:43Speaker 2: and stuck a stuck a little poultry in the freezer.
- 4:48Speaker 3: Yeah that's great. I'd love to hear that.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Yeah, and we had a better rooster that I really liked,
- 4:53Speaker 2: and then Snort killed that rooster. And then when Snort
- 4:56Speaker 2: killed that rooster, this impostor took his throat and learned
- 5:01Speaker 2: to crow and do all the rooster things. But I've
- 5:03Speaker 2: never really felt any affection towards him.
- 5:05Speaker 3: Well, he didn't earn.
- 5:06Speaker 2: It, he didn't. He didn't. The other one was like
- 5:08Speaker 2: this beautiful red rooster, and Snort killed it unceremoniously. But
- 5:13Speaker 2: no one's upset about that. But yeah, so that was
- 5:16Speaker 2: that's the excitement over at our house.
- 5:17Speaker 5: Cal offered to replace the poultry population after that or now.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Well, yeah, we got three other chickens because his mom
- 5:24Speaker 2: was moving. Yeah, and so she gave us three of
- 5:26Speaker 2: her chickens. It just happened time. The timing coincided with
- 5:31Speaker 2: the untimely death of our rooster. And uh yeah, one
- 5:34Speaker 2: of one of Cal's mom's chickens was the one that
- 5:37Speaker 2: the the impostor, the heir to the throne was pecking
- 5:40Speaker 2: at so so now it's it's almost like another coup
- 5:44Speaker 2: because these outside chickens have now dethroned the master rooster.
- 5:49Speaker 3: Wow.
- 5:49Speaker 2: I don't know anything about how any of this works, but.
- 5:52Speaker 3: All you know is that that rooster had to be
- 5:54Speaker 3: in the freezer.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Yep, yep. So now we've got two roosters in the freezer.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Cal did the cal did a fine job with the
- 6:00Speaker 2: first one as penance for his dog's sins. So yeah,
- 6:04Speaker 2: a lot of fun, Phil. What's going on with you lately?
- 6:07Speaker 3: Oh? Goodness, you do? You really do not want to know?
- 6:09Speaker 6: Because the most exciting thing that's happened to me in
- 6:12Speaker 6: the last few days that I beat Act three of
- 6:14Speaker 6: a video game called Hollow Night Silk Song. It's just
- 6:17Speaker 6: got the secret ending, which is very important to those
- 6:21Speaker 6: who know what's what's the internet parlots?
- 6:23Speaker 3: Is it I y k y k.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Oh Hollow Night Silks, Hollow Night Colon Silk Song.
- 6:31Speaker 3: It's a sequel to a video game called Hollow Night,
- 6:35Speaker 3: That's correct.
- 6:36Speaker 2: I'm just trying to think of. Is it like an
- 6:38Speaker 2: Ocarina of Time type deal?
- 6:40Speaker 6: You do acquire items that allow you to progress to
- 6:43Speaker 6: new areas much like a Zelda game, so you're not
- 6:45Speaker 6: on the wrong track. It's called the genre is called
- 6:47Speaker 6: the metroid Vania because it's a games like the Metroid series.
- 6:51Speaker 6: In the Castle Vania series, they kind of made a
- 6:53Speaker 6: portmanteau of that.
- 6:55Speaker 2: I'm going to dig us out of this hole.
- 6:57Speaker 3: Phil.
- 6:57Speaker 6: You play as a character called and you're protecting the
- 7:01Speaker 6: bug kingdom of far Loom.
- 7:03Speaker 3: You want to keep Should I keep going?
- 7:05Speaker 7: No?
- 7:05Speaker 2: I was going to say, have we talked yet about
- 7:07Speaker 2: are you eating a deer at your house? Has come up?
- 7:10Speaker 2: It has not.
- 7:11Speaker 3: No.
- 7:11Speaker 6: My son, my twelve year old son, shot a deer
- 7:15Speaker 6: before I did, and we have a freezer full of
- 7:18Speaker 6: full of mule deer right now.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Speaking of family coups and impostors to the throne.
- 7:26Speaker 6: It says a lot about me that you asked how
- 7:28Speaker 6: I was doing it. Instead of saying, oh my god,
- 7:29Speaker 6: I'm so proud of my son who shot his first
- 7:32Speaker 6: mule deer, I said, I completed a very difficult video game.
- 7:35Speaker 2: Yeah, yes, no, but that's exciting. That's exciting.
- 7:39Speaker 3: It is.
- 7:39Speaker 6: It's been It's been a lot of fun because we
- 7:41Speaker 6: also signed up for this farm seat CSA and from
- 7:43Speaker 6: this farm that's less than a mile down the road
- 7:45Speaker 6: from our house. So we've been making a lot of
- 7:47Speaker 6: meals with fresh ingredients, fresh ingredients and and harvested deer.
- 7:51Speaker 3: It's been great.
- 7:52Speaker 2: How's he He's a couple of weeks out, now, how's he?
- 7:55Speaker 2: Is he ready for next fall?
- 7:56Speaker 3: Is he?
- 7:57Speaker 6: He seemed kind of just nonplussed about the whole thing, like, yeah,
- 8:00Speaker 6: I did it, what's the big deal? But now this
- 8:04Speaker 6: was his last year of being able to do it
- 8:07Speaker 6: as like an apprentice. So he's gonna have to go
- 8:09Speaker 6: through hunter safety next year. And well, I'll see if
- 8:11Speaker 6: he has the motivation for that. But he loves going
- 8:14Speaker 6: out on on on Grandpa's Grandpa's ranch and and trekking
- 8:18Speaker 6: about and looking for animals.
- 8:19Speaker 3: So I think I think he'll do it. He'll go
- 8:21Speaker 3: through the process.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Hopefully he won't get to the point like Seth is
- 8:24Speaker 2: where his brain won't function until he can kill a
- 8:26Speaker 2: big buck, because it's important to keep some perspect.
- 8:31Speaker 3: Okay, yeah, maybe I'll maybe I'll pull it back then.
- 8:34Speaker 2: Yeah, just have a little shortage, too bad? Well should
- 8:38Speaker 2: we should? We move on to our first guest today,
- 8:40Speaker 2: Let's do it?
- 8:41Speaker 4: Do it today?
- 8:43Speaker 2: We are joined by Montana Fish Wildlife in Parks Kalispell
- 8:46Speaker 2: Area wildlife biologist Franz engle Finger. Franz oversees wildlife monitoring
- 8:51Speaker 2: across some of the most remote terrain in the lower
- 8:54Speaker 2: forty eight, including an ongoing elk research project in the
- 8:57Speaker 2: Bob Marshall Wilderness. Franz, thanks for joining us today.
- 9:02Speaker 8: Thank it's great to be here. Thank you for making
- 9:04Speaker 8: the time to talk to me and hear about some
- 9:06Speaker 8: of the work we're doing up in northwest Montana.
- 9:08Speaker 2: Yeah, we're excited to hear about it.
- 9:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 9:11Speaker 4: Hey, Franz, Corey here. When you hear about elk in Montana,
- 9:15Speaker 4: most conversations focus on areas where herds have an air
- 9:19Speaker 4: quoting over objective population. But Region One in northwest Montana,
- 9:24Speaker 4: where I was born and bred is home, which is
- 9:27Speaker 4: also home to a sixth of Montana's public land, which
- 9:30Speaker 4: should be an eye opener to a lot of folks.
- 9:33Speaker 4: Region one faces a very different set of challenges. Franz.
- 9:37Speaker 4: Can you lay out what makes elk management west of
- 9:39Speaker 4: the Continental Divide unique compared to the rest of the
- 9:42Speaker 4: state of Montana.
- 9:44Speaker 8: Yeah, sure, Corey. I think first off, one of the
- 9:47Speaker 8: unique things is in Region one. We have an opportunity
- 9:50Speaker 8: to grow elk on public land, and I think some
- 9:53Speaker 8: of the things that make Region one unique is a
- 9:55Speaker 8: abundant access. Like you talked about, we have over five
- 9:58Speaker 8: hundred million acres of public life and as well as
- 10:00Speaker 8: an additional half a million acres of private land enrolled
- 10:04Speaker 8: at our bark management programs, So a lot of opportunity
- 10:07Speaker 8: to get out of the woods and have a great hunt.
- 10:10Speaker 8: Region one is also in northwest Montana forested, which makes
- 10:14Speaker 8: hunting complicated. I think a lot of people come up
- 10:17Speaker 8: here for the first time and they're like, didn't think
- 10:18Speaker 8: we have so many trees, and so that changes how
- 10:21Speaker 8: you can hunt. It also changes, you know, as biologists,
- 10:24Speaker 8: how we can survey our populations and monarch or kren.
- 10:27Speaker 8: You know, flying and during aerial surveys is really only
- 10:30Speaker 8: effective where you can see to the you know, through
- 10:32Speaker 8: the canopy or where there no trees, and so we
- 10:35Speaker 8: have very few districts where we can actually you know,
- 10:37Speaker 8: do aerial surveys. And then finally, you know, with so
- 10:42Speaker 8: much the landscape forested, our changes in our elk populations
- 10:45Speaker 8: are closely tied to changes in our forest cover, and
- 10:48Speaker 8: so when you look at you know, history of forest
- 10:51Speaker 8: extraction Montana where you had a big boom from about
- 10:54Speaker 8: the you know fifties through the nineties and then are
- 10:57Speaker 8: real drop off after that. You you know, some of
- 11:01Speaker 8: those you know, timber cuts that really provide a great
- 11:04Speaker 8: habitat from a number of our ungulates have played out
- 11:06Speaker 8: at this point. So you can't talk about you know,
- 11:08Speaker 8: changes in onion population without talking about forest management, force fire.
- 11:12Speaker 8: And then finally, you know, Region one we're also known for,
- 11:15Speaker 8: you know, our recovered carnivore populations. We have healthy populations
- 11:20Speaker 8: of wolves, bears, lions, and so that's also in the mix.
- 11:25Speaker 8: Region one, you know, great white tail deer hunting. Twenty
- 11:28Speaker 8: percent of the state's harvest comes from northwest Montana. Good
- 11:30Speaker 8: black bear hunting as well, Neil dear, you know, we
- 11:33Speaker 8: harvest about three percent of the state and for elk
- 11:36Speaker 8: it's about five percent of the overall state harvest. And
- 11:39Speaker 8: in Region one we kind of say, you know, we
- 11:41Speaker 8: force elk to be moose. We bury their groceries and
- 11:44Speaker 8: four feet to snow and make them eat shrumped. So
- 11:47Speaker 8: you know, no surprise. But again, you know, many some
- 11:52Speaker 8: of our hunting districts are under objective and again that's
- 11:54Speaker 8: where we have this opportunity to grow out on public land.
- 11:58Speaker 4: Well, speaking of populations, you work primarily in and around
- 12:01Speaker 4: the Great Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex, specifically up and around
- 12:05Speaker 4: the South Fork of the Flathead Drainage. What have historical
- 12:09Speaker 4: elk populations been like in that area and what are
- 12:12Speaker 4: today's most recent population estimates.
- 12:15Speaker 8: Yeah, you know, the South Fork has a long history
- 12:18Speaker 8: of elk numbers and elk fluctuations. I think when I
- 12:22Speaker 8: think of the Bob Marshall and the South Fork, I
- 12:23Speaker 8: think of three herds you've got which all summer within
- 12:27Speaker 8: that South Fork drainage. You have but two of them
- 12:30Speaker 8: those that go over to the Sun River to the east,
- 12:33Speaker 8: and those that migrate south to the Blackwater Clearwater.
- 12:37Speaker 3: They go.
- 12:37Speaker 8: They're kind of our winter birds. They bug out in
- 12:41Speaker 8: the winter to better winter range conditions outside the Bob.
- 12:45Speaker 8: And so my research right now is focused on those
- 12:47Speaker 8: hardy souls that spend the entire winter or their entire
- 12:51Speaker 8: life cycle within the South Fork, and there they deal
- 12:54Speaker 8: with you know, deep snow and e got a living
- 12:56Speaker 8: on the valley bottom. And then those south and southwest
- 12:59Speaker 8: facing slopes in terms of the history of that population
- 13:03Speaker 8: that that winter in the South Fork. You know background
- 13:06Speaker 8: the start, you know, nineteen hundreds they first started to
- 13:09Speaker 8: document elk over wintering in the South Fork, and there
- 13:13Speaker 8: was a series of conditions, you know, fire, isolation, limited hunting,
- 13:19Speaker 8: and you know, also limited pressure from predators that allowed
- 13:23Speaker 8: that population to balloon such that by you know, the
- 13:27Speaker 8: late thirties, we saw high of over thirty eight hundred
- 13:31Speaker 8: elk in you know, wintering in the South Fork. Granted,
- 13:34Speaker 8: they were also becoming alarmed by the impact that these
- 13:38Speaker 8: elk are having on range conditions. But again, you know,
- 13:42Speaker 8: back then, you know, things blew up and it made
- 13:44Speaker 8: for some of the best hunting in the country. You know,
- 13:48Speaker 8: the Bob Marsha Wilderness is isolated, it's rugged, it's beautiful,
- 13:52Speaker 8: and elk numbers like that really supported a you know,
- 13:55Speaker 8: wonderful hunting opportunity. Things have changed, several things have conspired
- 14:01Speaker 8: that today, over the last twenty years, we've seen numbers decline. Now,
- 14:05Speaker 8: when I give you population estimates from the thirties, those
- 14:08Speaker 8: are estimates based on on winter track counts and walking
- 14:11Speaker 8: boots on the ground in the winter. And then when
- 14:14Speaker 8: I talk about you know, our estimates stays. It's not
- 14:17Speaker 8: so much estimates as they are minimum counts. These are
- 14:20Speaker 8: the number of animals I see when I fly, and
- 14:22Speaker 8: so so it's sort of an orange as and apples comparison.
- 14:26Speaker 8: But what I will say is it appears that we
- 14:29Speaker 8: are you know, at loas we haven't seen in decades.
- 14:31Speaker 8: And you know, although it's orange and apples comparison, there's
- 14:34Speaker 8: certainly less fruit on the table.
- 14:38Speaker 4: Well with that, what steps is FWP taking to understand
- 14:42Speaker 4: what's driving this decline and in turn support the long
- 14:45Speaker 4: term herd health of these elk?
- 14:48Speaker 8: Sure, I think, you know, this comes down to the
- 14:52Speaker 8: question of, you know, what drives population change or elk populations?
- 14:56Speaker 8: And you know, I tend to think of, you know,
- 14:58Speaker 8: elk kind of the middle. There's ordered on the bottom
- 15:00Speaker 8: by forged production and little pressure on the top from predation.
- 15:04Speaker 8: It's this question of, you know, is it bottom up
- 15:07Speaker 8: processes habitat and forge or predators that are limiting populations?
- 15:12Speaker 8: And I kind of like to think of, you know,
- 15:13Speaker 8: elk sitting around the table playing a friendly game of poker,
- 15:17Speaker 8: and every season is a you know, is a hand
- 15:20Speaker 8: and I know that you know, habitat conditions forge production
- 15:24Speaker 8: that will moderate all things. And so if you know
- 15:28Speaker 8: you have a wet spring and you got good forge production,
- 15:31Speaker 8: that's like getting Delta a sixth or seventh card. But
- 15:34Speaker 8: if you got drought, uh, you know, fire that whips
- 15:37Speaker 8: through your rental range, maybe you're playing with only four
- 15:39Speaker 8: three cards, and then if you have a big, big snowstorm,
- 15:42Speaker 8: you just fold. So you know, every season it changes.
- 15:46Speaker 8: But again, habitat is a big player that helps moderate
- 15:49Speaker 8: the other factors, namely climate and predation. In terms of
- 15:52Speaker 8: what you know FBP is doing. You know, we use
- 15:55Speaker 8: information research to inform and adapt our management. And so
- 15:59Speaker 8: in Northway, Montana, we've got a couple of different projects
- 16:01Speaker 8: going on. I'll briefly touch on one and then we'll
- 16:04Speaker 8: dive into the work we're doing in the South Fork.
- 16:07Speaker 8: So we have the NOx and Elk Study, which is
- 16:10Speaker 8: a comprehensive study looking at elk survival, sources of mortality, predation,
- 16:17Speaker 8: looking at forest management and how that affects forge quality
- 16:20Speaker 8: and production. And there they've got about one hundred and
- 16:23Speaker 8: fifty callers on cow Elk. They've got another one hundred
- 16:26Speaker 8: and fifty they put on Neo nates that you know
- 16:29Speaker 8: right after birth and tracking survival, tracking sources of mortality
- 16:34Speaker 8: that will help inform our management statewide and especially here
- 16:37Speaker 8: in northwest Montana. The work I'm doing, and we're going
- 16:40Speaker 8: to talk about today a little bit more in depth,
- 16:42Speaker 8: is coloring elk in the South Fork to try and
- 16:45Speaker 8: tease out some of the things that are causing that
- 16:48Speaker 8: decline and preventing that recovery of elk in the South Fork.
- 16:54Speaker 8: So yeah, using resource to and form management.
- 16:58Speaker 4: So this coloring project has got must have a lot
- 17:02Speaker 4: of specific details that you have to figure out. So
- 17:05Speaker 4: how are you capturing these elk? What are these callers
- 17:09Speaker 4: trying to measure? And what kind of data are you
- 17:11Speaker 4: hoping to collect from this study?
- 17:14Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 17:14Speaker 8: Thank you. Yeah, So we got two approaches to catching elk.
- 17:18Speaker 8: We can do aerial captures. That's with higher team that
- 17:21Speaker 8: comes in with a helicopter and darts and immobilizes elk
- 17:24Speaker 8: from the air and then goes on and slaps on
- 17:27Speaker 8: the collar. That we can do when we're outside the wilderness,
- 17:31Speaker 8: but wilderness designation provides with it some additional challenges. Our
- 17:35Speaker 8: other option for capturing elk. Can we do this both
- 17:38Speaker 8: in wilders? Outside is ground captures where we use clover
- 17:42Speaker 8: traps that are baited with alfalfa hay and there's a
- 17:46Speaker 8: trip wire. They're basically, you know, metal cages with netting
- 17:49Speaker 8: and we bait the elk in there and they set
- 17:51Speaker 8: off the trap, and then once they're in there, we've
- 17:53Speaker 8: got trapped transmitters that then tell us something's there and
- 17:56Speaker 8: we can go and collar them. What we have is
- 17:59Speaker 8: we GPS callers. These are callers you can program. They'll
- 18:03Speaker 8: give us you know, six to twelve locations a day,
- 18:08Speaker 8: and a tremendous amount of information you know, day night,
- 18:12Speaker 8: bad weather as well. And if our animals stop moving,
- 18:16Speaker 8: we get a mortality report. I get a text or
- 18:18Speaker 8: an email that says your animals down and it's here,
- 18:20Speaker 8: and I can go in very quickly. If I can
- 18:22Speaker 8: get there and start to look at some of the
- 18:25Speaker 8: factors and causes of that mortality. What we hope to
- 18:28Speaker 8: get out of this, you know, we have very limited
- 18:31Speaker 8: information about elk movement and vital rates within the South Fork,
- 18:36Speaker 8: so simple things like you know, adult survival, pregnancy rate,
- 18:41Speaker 8: some of the things that you know people thought might
- 18:43Speaker 8: be limiting. That's information we can tease out from this
- 18:46Speaker 8: limited study as well as some of those seasonal movements
- 18:48Speaker 8: and habitat selection. And again, all this is to help
- 18:51Speaker 8: us think about ways we can help this population recover.
- 18:57Speaker 4: Well, specifically the wilderness portion of this study and being
- 19:02Speaker 4: in an extremely remote setting. And correct me if I'm wrong.
- 19:06Speaker 4: You're trying to pull this off during the winter months.
- 19:09Speaker 4: It sounds like a logistical nightmare. So what are some
- 19:12Speaker 4: of the key challenges of this project and also what
- 19:14Speaker 4: keeps your team motivated to keep pushing on?
- 19:18Speaker 8: Sure? Sure, I think you know, to be clear, you know,
- 19:21Speaker 8: the men and women I work with at f to BP,
- 19:23Speaker 8: they all work in remote settings doing you know, stuff
- 19:28Speaker 8: in rugged terrain. So what makes this unique is that
- 19:30Speaker 8: wilderness aspect. And I'd be remiss if I didn't mention
- 19:34Speaker 8: some of our project supporters. You know, this project is
- 19:37Speaker 8: funded you know through Pittman, Robbins and Dolls these or
- 19:40Speaker 8: excise taxes on hook and bullets. So that's provided the
- 19:45Speaker 8: funding for the collaring and the helicopter captures. But it
- 19:47Speaker 8: was a grant from the Rocky Mountain out Foundation that
- 19:50Speaker 8: allowed us to actually extend this work into the wilderness.
- 19:52Speaker 8: And so what we need is, you know, they helped
- 19:54Speaker 8: pay for aluminum traps that are portable enough that we
- 19:57Speaker 8: could pack them in. Then of course partnering with the
- 20:01Speaker 8: US four Service, they have crews that go there in
- 20:04Speaker 8: this area and the winner to do snow surveys. They've
- 20:06Speaker 8: got the technical skills as well as you know, they
- 20:09Speaker 8: wrapped their head around working remotely very well. So they've
- 20:12Speaker 8: been a critical partner as well. But again in terms
- 20:15Speaker 8: of some of the challenges, you know, access for sure,
- 20:18Speaker 8: we're talking it's a two day to three day ski
- 20:21Speaker 8: and at a minimum, and it depends on conditions. Last
- 20:24Speaker 8: year when we went in, you know, it took my
- 20:27Speaker 8: crew about eight hours to get up over Gordon Pass.
- 20:31Speaker 8: The next crew that was coming in or relieve us,
- 20:33Speaker 8: they got hit by snow. It took them over thirteen
- 20:36Speaker 8: hours and they were getting to the halfway point at
- 20:38Speaker 8: about you know, nine pm at night in the dark.
- 20:40Speaker 8: So access is a challenging and that makes also planning difficult.
- 20:44Speaker 8: You know, if I forget something, I'm not running out
- 20:47Speaker 8: to the truck. We got to make do. If we
- 20:49Speaker 8: have you know, a binding break like we did last year,
- 20:52Speaker 8: you got a kind of a guiver, a fix and
- 20:55Speaker 8: so you know, there's that challenge as well. Physical demands,
- 21:00Speaker 8: you know, like I said that, you know, traveling in snow,
- 21:04Speaker 8: just you know, keeping your body fed. I lost ten
- 21:07Speaker 8: pounds and I don't have ten pounds to lose. We
- 21:10Speaker 8: were eating you know, candy, you know, we were you know,
- 21:15Speaker 8: breakfast sandwiches cooked and bacon soaked in bacon Greece, and
- 21:18Speaker 8: you know, I just couldn't put on enough calories. And
- 21:21Speaker 8: then obviously the environment. We saw temperatures from you know,
- 21:25Speaker 8: fifty degrees to negative thirty and I have a frame
- 21:29Speaker 8: of reference of what you know, negative twenty is, but
- 21:31Speaker 8: you get down to negative thirty and it's just like,
- 21:34Speaker 8: you know, that's new.
- 21:36Speaker 2: Everything's hard.
- 21:37Speaker 8: Oh yeah, sounds like an adventure. Yeah it was, you know,
- 21:41Speaker 8: it was an adventure. It was also you know, you know,
- 21:44Speaker 8: hard work, and I think important work. And you ask,
- 21:47Speaker 8: kind of what what keeps me motivated? I think two things.
- 21:49Speaker 8: One is, you know, I feel indebted to the sportsmen
- 21:52Speaker 8: and sports women here that you know, enjoy the Bob Marshall,
- 21:55Speaker 8: you know, care about our unguar populations or game populations,
- 21:59Speaker 8: wildlife in general, Curious, you know what's going on. You know,
- 22:02Speaker 8: I feel like we owe them, you know, an answer
- 22:05Speaker 8: at least to try and find an answer. And then
- 22:07Speaker 8: I think the other thing that keeps to be motivated is,
- 22:10Speaker 8: you know, biologists that came before me, that did a
- 22:12Speaker 8: lot of work to get some of the information we have.
- 22:14Speaker 8: We had you know, back in the seventies, eighties, nineties,
- 22:17Speaker 8: there are a few colloring studies where you know, they
- 22:19Speaker 8: go out, they slap these callers on, but then they'd
- 22:22Speaker 8: have to go to get locations. They'd have to fly
- 22:24Speaker 8: and use VHF radios to triangulate. So took on an
- 22:28Speaker 8: immense amount of effort as well as risk to get
- 22:31Speaker 8: those those locations. I can sit now at my desk,
- 22:34Speaker 8: I don't but I can sit you know, back and
- 22:37Speaker 8: every morning sip a cup of coffee and see, you know,
- 22:39Speaker 8: what my elkor doing. And I can get a tremendous
- 22:41Speaker 8: amount of information from these callers, and I feel sort
- 22:44Speaker 8: of you know, you know that it's important for me
- 22:47Speaker 8: to put the effort into trying and getting them out.
- 22:50Speaker 2: Wow.
- 22:51Speaker 4: Fascinating.
- 22:52Speaker 3: Yeah, that's cool.
- 22:53Speaker 4: Well, for people who want to learn and follow along
- 22:57Speaker 4: as the study progresses, where can they find updates or
- 22:59Speaker 4: learn more or about your work?
- 23:01Speaker 8: Yeah, FMVP has some you know, Fishwife and process has
- 23:05Speaker 8: some great resources. The first off is every year we
- 23:08Speaker 8: put out an annual ELK report that looks at harvest
- 23:11Speaker 8: throughout the region. You can just google you know, FWP
- 23:15Speaker 8: R one ELK Report and you'll see that that's a
- 23:17Speaker 8: great resource. But in terms of the research we do,
- 23:20Speaker 8: you can also just google FWP ELK Research and that
- 23:22Speaker 8: will bring you to our research page. We also have
- 23:25Speaker 8: that from mule there and other species, but FP ELK
- 23:29Speaker 8: Research and you will see, you know, project annual reports
- 23:33Speaker 8: and summaries for just about every project we're doing, and
- 23:37Speaker 8: when I get to it, you'll have one for this
- 23:38Speaker 8: one too, So that's where information will affair great.
- 23:42Speaker 4: Well, I could talk about this all day, just as
- 23:44Speaker 4: somebody who grew up and used to live and work
- 23:46Speaker 4: in the in the wilderness. But thanks for your time
- 23:49Speaker 4: and giving us just a glimpse into your work. Research
- 23:52Speaker 4: like this plays a huge role in how Montana manages wildlife,
- 23:55Speaker 4: and we appreciate all your hard work, dangerous work that
- 23:58Speaker 4: you guys are doing to try and wrap your heads
- 24:00Speaker 4: around what's going on up there. So we thank you
- 24:02Speaker 4: for that.
- 24:04Speaker 8: Oh, thank you. Corey Randal Seth, I really appreciate you
- 24:06Speaker 8: having me on and yeah, it's been fun.
- 24:08Speaker 2: Thank you, Yeah, thank you.
- 24:09Speaker 4: I do have one more really important question, maybe the
- 24:11Speaker 4: most important Cats or Grizz this Saturday.
- 24:16Speaker 8: Oh well, my son's down and Bozeman, so go cats.
- 24:21Speaker 3: For Cory.
- 24:22Speaker 4: All right, well go Griz, go Griz.
- 24:26Speaker 2: Thanks Froz.
- 24:27Speaker 8: Yeah, thank you.
- 24:28Speaker 3: Take care man.
- 24:30Speaker 2: That's that's wild stuff.
- 24:32Speaker 4: Yeah sounds like fun.
- 24:34Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I know, it sounds sounds like a lot
- 24:36Speaker 3: of work.
- 24:37Speaker 2: Multi yeah, like a multi day ski trip. Is I
- 24:41Speaker 2: could count on like one hand the number of times
- 24:44Speaker 2: of skied in somewhere in camped and it's not not
- 24:46Speaker 2: not very I mean it's fun, but it's it's a
- 24:48Speaker 2: lot of work.
- 24:48Speaker 4: Just stressful being in ski boots for twenty four I
- 24:51Speaker 4: mean you sleep a little bit, you know. He was
- 24:54Speaker 4: saying how hard it is to get in there, a
- 24:55Speaker 4: couple of days worth of just skiing in. Imagine living
- 24:58Speaker 4: in ski boots for those who have ever slipped their
- 24:59Speaker 4: feet to them. They're not comfortable. Those guys are living
- 25:02Speaker 4: in them while they're back there.
- 25:03Speaker 2: Yeah, might make me cry.
- 25:05Speaker 4: Yeah, most of those people, most days a lot of tears, blood, sweat,
- 25:08Speaker 4: and tears.
- 25:11Speaker 2: Speaking of tears, now it's time for a new segment,
- 25:16Speaker 2: Meat Theater. Meat theater is the concept that we came
- 25:28Speaker 2: up yet with yesterday where we take outstanding hunting literature
- 25:31Speaker 2: and feed it into artificial intelligence and ask the AI
- 25:35Speaker 2: to generate a short dramatic script to be performed live
- 25:38Speaker 2: by untrained actors. And as we're brainstorming for today's show,
- 25:42Speaker 2: we wanted to tie in the latest episode of Meat
- 25:44Speaker 2: Eater season thirteen, which, as we all know, captures Steve's
- 25:47Speaker 2: first African safari. And what better way to do that,
- 25:50Speaker 2: I thought, than perform a hasty stage adaptation of a
- 25:53Speaker 2: classic Ernest Hemingway's short story, The Short Happy Life of
- 25:57Speaker 2: Francis Macomber, originally public in the September nineteen thirty sixth
- 26:01Speaker 2: issue of Cosmopolitan magazine. Guys, ready, oh manny, and we
- 26:08Speaker 2: did this, absol. We just did this once yesterday to
- 26:11Speaker 2: make sure that it wouldn't take ten minutes, and it didn't.
- 26:13Speaker 2: So let's give her a rip. Boys.
- 26:15Speaker 3: Yeah, not a lot of practice went into this, so action.
- 26:19Speaker 2: The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber on Nice Lights Phille,
- 26:24Speaker 2: scene one after the Lion.
- 26:31Speaker 3: Oh no, that's the wrong one. I'm already screwing this up.
- 26:33Speaker 3: Here we go, We're live.
- 26:35Speaker 6: It is late afternoon at a hunting camp in Africa.
- 26:39Speaker 6: Francis Macomber has just run like a coward from a
- 26:41Speaker 6: wounded lion.
- 26:43Speaker 3: His wife watched it all happen. So did their pH
- 26:46Speaker 3: Robert Wilson. No one has spoken directly of it, but
- 26:50Speaker 3: everyone knows.
- 26:52Speaker 2: How is your drink, mister Wilson?
- 26:56Speaker 4: Fine, just fine.
- 26:58Speaker 3: We got that lion eventually, though, didn't we Yes, we did.
- 27:02Speaker 2: We got him. How interesting, Margo. I I'm going to
- 27:06Speaker 2: clean up before dinner. You were lovely today, Darling, really
- 27:10Speaker 2: impressive stuff.
- 27:13Speaker 6: At the moment, Margo turns her back on her husband
- 27:16Speaker 6: and walks away.
- 27:18Speaker 5: I bolted. I just bolted like a scared little boy.
- 27:22Speaker 5: I've never done anything like that before.
- 27:27Speaker 4: It happens to everyone at some point.
- 27:29Speaker 3: Does it happen to you? Oh? Hold on, Oh that's
- 27:37Speaker 3: double sided, paid, double pain.
- 27:38Speaker 9: No, she saw it all. She'll never let me forget it.
- 27:45Speaker 9: Women are difficult in these situations. Can we go out tomorrow,
- 27:49Speaker 9: go after something else? I need to I need another chance.
- 27:55Speaker 4: Buffalo will go after buffalo in the morning.
- 27:58Speaker 9: Yes, Buffalo, thank you, Thank you, Wilson, don't thank me yet.
- 28:03Speaker 6: That night, Margot Macomber visited Wilson's tent. Francis knew. Wilson
- 28:09Speaker 6: knew that he knew, but nothing was said. In the
- 28:12Speaker 6: morning they would hunt buffalo seem to the buffalo.
- 28:20Speaker 3: Morning the hunt begins. Well, Francis shoots three buffalo for
- 28:25Speaker 3: the first time in his life. He is not afraid.
- 28:29Speaker 3: He feels it that thing he had never felt before.
- 28:33Speaker 3: Perhaps this is what courage.
- 28:36Speaker 4: Is good shooting Macomber, damn good?
- 28:39Speaker 3: Did you see? Did you see them drop?
- 28:42Speaker 2: Yes? I saw.
- 28:44Speaker 3: I wasn't afraid, not at all. I felt God, Wilson,
- 28:49Speaker 3: I felt alive. You shot magnificently. Did you see, Margot?
- 28:53Speaker 2: I saw.
- 29:00Speaker 3: Wilson.
- 29:01Speaker 2: Wilson.
- 29:02Speaker 3: One of them's just one.
- 29:04Speaker 4: Of them's just wounded. We'll have to go in after him.
- 29:07Speaker 2: Good, let's go the bush.
- 29:12Speaker 4: A wounded buff in the bush is one of the
- 29:14Speaker 4: most dangerous.
- 29:15Speaker 3: I don't care. I'm not afraid anymore. Can you understand
- 29:19Speaker 3: that I'm no longer afraid? Is it safe? Oh?
- 29:23Speaker 4: Nothing's safe, But we have to finish him.
- 29:26Speaker 3: Then let's finish him. Margo stay here with the gun.
- 29:29Speaker 2: Bear.
- 29:30Speaker 3: We'll be back and there it was.
- 29:33Speaker 6: Francis Macomber had crossed over just thirty minutes ago. He
- 29:37Speaker 6: had been a boy and now he was a man.
- 29:42Speaker 6: His wife knew it, Wilson knew it, and Macomber himself
- 29:46Speaker 6: knew it. Most of all, he was happy, perhaps for
- 29:50Speaker 6: the first time in his life.
- 29:53Speaker 4: There he is twelve yards away.
- 29:56Speaker 3: I see him.
- 29:58Speaker 2: Christ, Oh no, the cap guns knock going off, It
- 30:04Speaker 2: went off. We got it, do that, Linergain Corey quickly
- 30:09Speaker 2: Christ Francis, Oh god, Francis, is he He's dead.
- 30:14Speaker 4: The bullet hit him in the back of the head.
- 30:16Speaker 2: I tried to hit the buffalo. I had to shoot.
- 30:18Speaker 2: It was an accident, of course it was. I thought
- 30:22Speaker 2: I could kill the buffalo. You saw I was charging.
- 30:25Speaker 4: That's right, the buffalo was charging.
- 30:27Speaker 2: Oh God, oh god.
- 30:29Speaker 4: You were afraid, weren't you? What just now, just these
- 30:34Speaker 4: last thirty minutes, you were afraid of him for the
- 30:36Speaker 4: first time.
- 30:38Speaker 2: I don't know what you mean.
- 30:39Speaker 4: No, I don't suppose you do.
- 30:42Speaker 2: Scene three, epilogue.
- 30:53Speaker 6: They said it was an accident, of course, a tragic
- 30:56Speaker 6: accident during a buffalo hunt. These things happen in Africa.
- 31:00Speaker 6: Missus Macomber was distraught naturally, she had tried to save
- 31:04Speaker 6: her husband from the charging animal. No one could blame
- 31:07Speaker 6: her for what happened. Robert Wilson knew he had seen
- 31:12Speaker 6: that look in her eyes when Francis Macomber stopped being afraid,
- 31:16Speaker 6: when he became, for perhaps the first time and last
- 31:20Speaker 6: time in his life, a man she could not control,
- 31:25Speaker 6: a man she did not recognize. Francis Macomber lived thirty
- 31:30Speaker 6: five years, but he was truly alive for only thirty minutes.
- 31:36Speaker 6: In those thirty minutes, he was happy, and perhaps that
- 31:41Speaker 6: is longer than most men ever manage. The short, happy
- 31:47Speaker 6: life of Francis Macomber. Emphasis on short, emphasis on happy,
- 31:58Speaker 6: make of it what you will.
- 32:00Speaker 2: End of play. Audience goes nuts.
- 32:04Speaker 3: Do we still have viewers?
- 32:05Speaker 2: Phil Or Pill dropped out the last year?
- 32:09Speaker 6: I think, I mean, I think we're at peak viewerships, so.
- 32:12Speaker 3: Man, we locked them in.
- 32:14Speaker 2: Wow, lights are back on. Thanks for the stage lights, Phil.
- 32:18Speaker 3: Yeah, of course, there's dried leaves everywhere back here.
- 32:22Speaker 2: That filled seven minutes.
- 32:23Speaker 3: That was great.
- 32:24Speaker 2: I thought the computer did a really nice job with
- 32:26Speaker 2: that script. I added a few touches this morning to
- 32:29Speaker 2: make things clearer. I thought it left a little too
- 32:31Speaker 2: much up to suggestion and innuendo. But I really liked
- 32:36Speaker 2: what the computer did with that.
- 32:37Speaker 6: Yeah, the power that it took for the AI to
- 32:40Speaker 6: to create that. It only drained late Lake Mead like
- 32:43Speaker 6: a couple of inches, So wow.
- 32:47Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think it was worth Hopefully Hemingway is
- 32:49Speaker 2: not rolling over in his grave and catching Idaho directly
- 32:52Speaker 2: across from the old first Light AGEQ.
- 32:54Speaker 6: We have forty five new live chat comments that I'm
- 32:57Speaker 6: too scared to look at.
- 33:00Speaker 2: Well, Phil, Unfortunately, it's time to take a break for some.
- 33:05Speaker 6: Well, I haven't read the new one, so let's just
- 33:07Speaker 6: look at the old ones that I've seen. Let's see
- 33:10Speaker 6: here this is you know, it's almost Thanksgiving and we
- 33:13Speaker 6: have more news about next Thursday's show that Randall will
- 33:16Speaker 6: talk about at the end of the show. But Kenneth
- 33:19Speaker 6: would like to know favorite turkey preps smoked, fried, or
- 33:23Speaker 6: oven baked.
- 33:24Speaker 4: Man, you can't beat a fried turkey.
- 33:26Speaker 3: Fried's pretty good. I'm usually a traditional oven baked guy.
- 33:30Speaker 2: Yeah, just the oven roast, Brian, and oven roast, Yeah,
- 33:33Speaker 2: got it, Brian. I feel like the taste of a
- 33:37Speaker 2: smoked or fried turkey is soured by how often people
- 33:41Speaker 2: like to talk about how good they are.
- 33:44Speaker 3: That's true, you know.
- 33:47Speaker 2: I don't think there's anything wrong with the good old
- 33:49Speaker 2: fashioned turkey.
- 33:50Speaker 4: Nothing's wrong with it. Just the last couple of years
- 33:53Speaker 4: I've Brian and Fried and it's hard to beat that
- 33:55Speaker 4: crispy skin. It's it's not easy though. Yeah, a lot
- 33:58Speaker 4: of accidents can happen.
- 33:59Speaker 2: A lot of house dangerous. Be careful out there, careful,
- 34:03Speaker 2: thanks Againings coming up? Never bad idea to refresh yourself
- 34:06Speaker 2: on fire safety. Make sure those extinguishers are where they
- 34:09Speaker 2: should be, et cetera, et cetera.
- 34:10Speaker 3: Don't fright in your garage.
- 34:12Speaker 2: That's for Rick Huttons. He'll tell you all about fires.
- 34:15Speaker 6: I'm going to bring this up live just to hold
- 34:17Speaker 6: everyone responsible accountable. Mogre says that he still hasn't received
- 34:23Speaker 6: any news about his cookbooks. So oh so me, Jake Corey, whoever,
- 34:33Speaker 6: we need to get this man his cookbooks.
- 34:34Speaker 2: I don't have the backstore on this. Do we owe him?
- 34:36Speaker 6: We owe won a silly what was it like, like
- 34:41Speaker 6: sort of a caption contest thing, I don't remember what,
- 34:43Speaker 6: but Brody picked him as one of the winners. And
- 34:46Speaker 6: this is embarrassing to receive he's supposed to receive signed cookbooks.
- 34:50Speaker 2: As much as I want to get his cookbooks, I
- 34:53Speaker 2: think we should have swept this under the rug.
- 34:55Speaker 3: We did that.
- 34:57Speaker 6: We did that a couple of weeks ago. I refuse.
- 35:00Speaker 6: I respect the man too much.
- 35:01Speaker 3: You'll get those.
- 35:02Speaker 2: Cookbooks if I have to fly over to Hungary myself
- 35:04Speaker 2: and deliver them.
- 35:06Speaker 4: Morgar, just to put water under the fridge here, I
- 35:09Speaker 4: am replying to your email with the tracking number of
- 35:12Speaker 4: your cookbooks.
- 35:13Speaker 3: Oh that's some CS right there. Wonderful there. Hopefully that
- 35:20Speaker 3: clears everything up.
- 35:21Speaker 2: Apologies, Mogor.
- 35:23Speaker 6: Let's see holiday hunting traditions on either Christmas or Thanksgiving.
- 35:27Speaker 6: What do you guys do if anything? Hmm, that's from Trey.
- 35:32Speaker 2: We don't have traditions. We'll probably go out this Thanksgiving
- 35:35Speaker 2: morning to shoot a Sydney still looking for a deer.
- 35:39Speaker 2: And yeah, shot my first bowl the day after Thanksgiving.
- 35:44Speaker 2: I actually don't really like how many people are in
- 35:46Speaker 2: the woods around Thanksgiving. Not not that it's a bad thing,
- 35:48Speaker 2: but for my own enjoyment.
- 35:50Speaker 3: Event, it's a big tradition.
- 35:51Speaker 2: I feel like around Montana people just go out in
- 35:54Speaker 2: huge numbers right around Thanksgiving.
- 35:56Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, usually if I'm in Montana for Thanksgiving, I
- 35:59Speaker 5: usually do some sort of hunt Thanksgiving Day or yeah,
- 36:03Speaker 5: Thanksgiving Day morning, whether it's like a dough hunt or
- 36:07Speaker 5: upland hunt or something.
- 36:09Speaker 3: But this year I'm going.
- 36:09Speaker 5: To be back in Pennsylvania and the rifle season opens
- 36:14Speaker 5: the Saturday after Thanksgiving there. Oh, so it's like Thanksgiving,
- 36:19Speaker 5: then Friday, go to deer camp, and then Saturday wake
- 36:22Speaker 5: up in deer hunt.
- 36:23Speaker 2: Beautiful.
- 36:24Speaker 3: I love it.
- 36:24Speaker 2: Yeah, all lined up.
- 36:26Speaker 3: Right on. This is sort of a call to action.
- 36:28Speaker 6: This is from Ben and I was unaware of this,
- 36:31Speaker 6: mostly because I edit Cal's podcast and I don't think
- 36:33Speaker 6: he's talked about it, but he probably will on Monday's podcast.
- 36:37Speaker 6: But Ben says, any of my fellow Wisconsin nights in
- 36:39Speaker 6: the chat, please be sure and call email your reps
- 36:42Speaker 6: for the Sandhill crane hunting bill. Apparently there were lots
- 36:46Speaker 6: of opponents at the public hearing yesterday, and I looked
- 36:50Speaker 6: it up and apparently in twenty ten there was a
- 36:52Speaker 6: management plan developed by the Mississippi and Atlantic Flyway Councils
- 36:56Speaker 6: that would call for a potential crane hunt once numbers
- 36:59Speaker 6: exceeded aroun between thirty eight thousand and sixty thousand birds,
- 37:02Speaker 6: and estimates are now in the one hundred thousand range.
- 37:06Speaker 6: So get out there, Wisconsin. I let them know that
- 37:09Speaker 6: you want a sand Hill crane hunt.
- 37:11Speaker 2: Nobody's gonna stand up and advocate for hunting seasons if
- 37:15Speaker 2: hunters themselves don't do it. So get out there, gang.
- 37:19Speaker 2: Thank you Ben for bringing this to our attention.
- 37:21Speaker 6: I haven't looked at all the comments regarding meat theater yet,
- 37:24Speaker 6: but this is from Afro Man. I don't know about this.
- 37:26Speaker 3: Boys. What happened to one minute fishing?
- 37:28Speaker 2: It's a fair point.
- 37:29Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, that's a fair point.
- 37:31Speaker 2: I'll be honest.
- 37:32Speaker 6: I'm sure this is the only negative one and all
- 37:34Speaker 6: the other ones to be honest, mister man.
- 37:36Speaker 2: We we're well aware that this would be a polarizing segment.
- 37:40Speaker 6: Adam says, is it safe to return yet? Yes, Adam,
- 37:43Speaker 6: we're now in the listener feedback section. If you dipped out,
- 37:46Speaker 6: please come back. But Derek says, it's going to be
- 37:49Speaker 6: nominated for an Emmy, So I'm excited to put that on.
- 37:52Speaker 3: I'll take yeah.
- 37:53Speaker 2: I mean, even if we don't win an award, I
- 37:55Speaker 2: hope it inspires some audience members to go out and
- 37:59Speaker 2: read the sh short Happy Life of Francis Macomber. It's
- 38:02Speaker 2: a great story if you like gunshot accidents or maybe
- 38:07Speaker 2: not accidents, cuckolded marriages, and uh hunting in Africa. So
- 38:15Speaker 2: highly recommend some of Hemingway's finest work.
- 38:19Speaker 6: Dan is asking what the weirdest thing you guys have
- 38:21Speaker 6: ever found inside a critter is.
- 38:25Speaker 3: Brodheads.
- 38:25Speaker 2: Yeah. I shot a bowl one time that had a
- 38:28Speaker 2: broadhead that had gone through the the spinal what the
- 38:35Speaker 2: the little bow of the ridge that goes along the spine,
- 38:38Speaker 2: and it had it had gone through and then lodged
- 38:41Speaker 2: in the opposite side backstrap poking out. So when I
- 38:45Speaker 2: was cutting down, my knife hit the like where you
- 38:48Speaker 2: had threaded onto the shaft, into the shaft.
- 38:50Speaker 3: I shot a turkey to spring the head an air
- 38:52Speaker 3: rifle pellet in it.
- 38:54Speaker 2: Really, I we ate rabbit. And I can say this
- 38:57Speaker 2: because the restaurant's closed. Fabulous restaurant and missula and we
- 39:01Speaker 2: got a rabbit that had an air rifle pellet in
- 39:03Speaker 2: it at the restaurant.
- 39:05Speaker 3: Really yeah.
- 39:06Speaker 2: And we called the restaurant and they were like, these
- 39:10Speaker 2: are raised in the bitter it like in an open not.
- 39:15Speaker 2: I mean, it was not like open range, but they're
- 39:17Speaker 2: like some kid might have driven by and plunked one.
- 39:20Speaker 3: Geez.
- 39:21Speaker 2: So wow, Corey weird stuff and animals.
- 39:25Speaker 4: Let's see. I had a client catch a cutthroat that
- 39:30Speaker 4: had a snake coming out of its anus. I believe
- 39:35Speaker 4: it was a garter snake. I couldn't help myself and
- 39:37Speaker 4: I pulled it out still and it just kept coming.
- 39:39Speaker 2: Was it digested like it had gone in the front
- 39:41Speaker 2: end or was it still thrashing around like it had
- 39:44Speaker 2: gone in the back end.
- 39:44Speaker 4: The snake was dead. Fish was very much alive, but
- 39:47Speaker 4: it was the tail of the snake was already coming
- 39:50Speaker 4: out of the fish, so I just couldn't help him
- 39:53Speaker 4: pull out.
- 39:54Speaker 2: He was still hungry too. Phil still playing with the
- 39:56Speaker 2: cat gun over there. I think the critics Phil just
- 40:00Speaker 2: ad the cap gun. I think the critics of that
- 40:03Speaker 2: performance should know that Phil brought in a cap gun
- 40:05Speaker 2: that would have really added a lot of rial.
- 40:07Speaker 3: Uh.
- 40:11Speaker 2: Yeah, the gunshots would have been far more realistic had
- 40:13Speaker 2: the cap gun functioned. And also Phil, in practicing for
- 40:16Speaker 2: his match strike. When Wilson lights his cigarette, Phil burned
- 40:20Speaker 2: one of the microphones in the studio.
- 40:23Speaker 6: I also didn't I didn't hold the match close enough
- 40:25Speaker 6: to the mic, so it wasn't as impactful to it again.
- 40:29Speaker 2: Oh yeah, that sounds good. Anything else in the chat there, Phil.
- 40:35Speaker 3: Yeah, I think we can move on and tackle things
- 40:37Speaker 3: at the end of the show.
- 40:38Speaker 2: Alrighty, are is it a Christmas ornament?
- 40:44Speaker 4: Christmas ornament? Anybody were supposed to talk?
- 40:47Speaker 2: Shameless plug?
- 40:48Speaker 3: We kind of are.
- 40:49Speaker 4: It's hanging right here, yeah at the media dot Com.
- 40:52Speaker 2: Our next guest today is Derek Dumont, a hunter, photographer
- 40:55Speaker 2: and the host of the th eight Outdoors podcast. You
- 40:58Speaker 2: might know him from the viral video where a routine
- 41:01Speaker 2: deer hunt turns surreal after his bullet hit a collar
- 41:04Speaker 2: deer and made the collar explode on impact. What Yeah, Derek,
- 41:09Speaker 2: Welcome to the show.
- 41:11Speaker 10: Hey guys, thanks for having me.
- 41:14Speaker 2: So for folks who may not know you yet, can
- 41:16Speaker 2: you give us a little background on your story.
- 41:20Speaker 10: Yeah, my name is Derek. I'm a T eight paraplegic.
- 41:24Speaker 3: All right.
- 41:25Speaker 10: It's out in Utah on a c W m U hunt.
- 41:30Speaker 11: That's a that's a tag that they get out in
- 41:32Speaker 11: Utah for landowners who have more than like five thousand
- 41:35Speaker 11: acres get some tax revenue.
- 41:37Speaker 10: And stuff like that.
- 41:38Speaker 11: But yeah, it was a a couple day hunt, and
- 41:46Speaker 11: we're going for known giants in the area, so we're
- 41:49Speaker 11: going for a giant. But yeah, I didn't expect.
- 41:53Speaker 10: The smallest deer I've ever shot to be the most
- 41:55Speaker 10: popular deer I've ever shot.
- 41:58Speaker 2: So tell us about We're gonna pull up the video
- 42:01Speaker 2: here in a second, but tell us about how as
- 42:04Speaker 2: you mentioned your paraplegic, how how are you hunting, what's
- 42:06Speaker 2: the what's sort of the style or sort of adaptive
- 42:12Speaker 2: equipment that you used to hunt?
- 42:15Speaker 11: So on I'll hear in my local mountains, I like
- 42:19Speaker 11: to mountain bike and we'll strap a little made a
- 42:24Speaker 11: little mcguivert a trailer and we'll I'll throw gear and
- 42:26Speaker 11: stuff on the trailer and me and a buddy will
- 42:29Speaker 11: smash out on the mountain bikes and and get get
- 42:33Speaker 11: as deep as we can.
- 42:35Speaker 10: Either that and I got one of those action track chairs.
- 42:38Speaker 11: It's uh it's those wheelchair that looks like a tank
- 42:43Speaker 11: and uh so those work.
- 42:45Speaker 10: Those work well, although the battery dies pretty quick and you.
- 42:48Speaker 11: Want to get stuck up on the back country with
- 42:51Speaker 11: a yeah, five pound wheelchair.
- 42:53Speaker 2: Yeah, that's that's not ideal, not at all.
- 42:58Speaker 10: But on this particular, I was able to.
- 43:01Speaker 11: So since I'm a paraplegic and I'm in a wheelchair,
- 43:04Speaker 11: I have a license through the State of Utah DNR
- 43:07Speaker 11: to hunt from a vehicle, any four wheel drive vehicle.
- 43:11Speaker 11: So so that's where this hunt was able to.
- 43:14Speaker 10: So you accomplished.
- 43:15Speaker 2: So you guys are out looking for deer in the
- 43:18Speaker 2: morning and you're you're hunting from the vehicle. What did
- 43:22Speaker 2: this deer? Did you know it had a collar on?
- 43:24Speaker 2: I mean to just sort of walk us through like
- 43:27Speaker 2: what you were thinking up until the moment of the shot.
- 43:31Speaker 11: Okay, So it was actually the very last day, last
- 43:34Speaker 11: afternoon of the hunt, so it was, and there was
- 43:37Speaker 11: probably twenty minutes.
- 43:38Speaker 10: Of legal shooting and light left.
- 43:40Speaker 11: We're driving back down the lodge and at this point
- 43:46Speaker 11: I just told the landowner was that he was driving.
- 43:48Speaker 11: I was like, hey, you know, anything with antlers, I
- 43:51Speaker 11: would like to at least put some of me in
- 43:53Speaker 11: the freezer because I was like taking my old man
- 43:55Speaker 11: on hunts with me, So just anything we could munch on.
- 44:00Speaker 11: But when we're coming coming around the corner and it's
- 44:03Speaker 11: absolutely pouring rain, you can't really can't hear it in
- 44:05Speaker 11: the in the video that I posted just microphone wise
- 44:11Speaker 11: wasn't working out well.
- 44:12Speaker 10: But coming around the corner and this.
- 44:15Speaker 11: Little fork he just pops up out of his bed
- 44:18Speaker 11: and is staring at us. Because, like I said, it
- 44:20Speaker 11: was pouring rain and we weren't expecting to see anything.
- 44:23Speaker 11: So this guy popped up and then just staring at us,
- 44:26Speaker 11: probably is probably about ten yards off the road, and
- 44:29Speaker 11: land landowners like here's your chance. I was like, all right, cool,
- 44:34Speaker 11: got got my rifle set up and he had he
- 44:38Speaker 11: had glass on it, he had his binos on it.
- 44:40Speaker 11: And I got into the optic. I was like, it's
- 44:41Speaker 11: got a collar. He's like, it's all good. You can,
- 44:44Speaker 11: you know, take it that well. And so he wanted
- 44:47Speaker 11: me to shoot it where the neck meets the body,
- 44:50Speaker 11: since it.
- 44:50Speaker 10: Was raining so hard the you know.
- 44:53Speaker 11: If you would have hit it somewhere else, the blood
- 44:55Speaker 11: trail would have probably been washed away pretty fast.
- 44:58Speaker 10: It was rain rain really hard that day.
- 45:01Speaker 11: So I aimed right where the neck meets the meets
- 45:05Speaker 11: the chest, right there in the brisket area. Saw the collar,
- 45:09Speaker 11: aim underneath of it, and I hit the lithium battery
- 45:15Speaker 11: on the collar and and yeah, the.
- 45:20Speaker 2: Yeah, let's let's let the video.
- 45:22Speaker 10: Explosion, I thought the deer went sky high.
- 45:24Speaker 2: And there's phil can you pull off that video?
- 45:28Speaker 3: Yes?
- 45:29Speaker 2: And I told Derek before we got started, like I
- 45:33Speaker 2: someone set this to us and said, have you seen
- 45:35Speaker 2: this video of a deer exploding when the collar gets hit?
- 45:39Speaker 2: And I thought, Oh, we're gonna get like a little sizzle,
- 45:42Speaker 2: you know, or like a couple of sparks. But the
- 45:44Speaker 2: video is, uh is something let's see here the yeah getting.
- 45:55Speaker 6: Set out of the shot takes aim.
- 46:00Speaker 2: Kaboom and it's it's like a yeah. I mean for
- 46:03Speaker 2: folks that aren't listening are watching, excuse me, for the
- 46:06Speaker 2: folks who are listening and not watching, Yeah, it looks
- 46:10Speaker 2: like a tannerite went off. So Derek, what, what's the
- 46:14Speaker 2: first thing in your mind?
- 46:16Speaker 3: That?
- 46:16Speaker 2: I mean, it's crazy. So you pull the trigger and
- 46:21Speaker 2: there's one big boom and then another big boom. What's
- 46:23Speaker 2: the first thing goes through your mind?
- 46:27Speaker 10: Well?
- 46:28Speaker 11: It was funny because there was there was a good
- 46:30Speaker 11: fifteen seconds of silence in the truck, like we all
- 46:33Speaker 11: just sat there.
- 46:34Speaker 8: And just stared at the fifteen foot tall.
- 46:38Speaker 11: Pile of smoke, and we all just literally just sat
- 46:41Speaker 11: there and I was like, uh, they and the deer
- 46:46Speaker 11: you guys got out here, you know, and the landowners
- 46:51Speaker 11: like I've been hunting my land for fifty years and
- 46:54Speaker 11: I have never ever seen that, and we're Yeah, it
- 46:58Speaker 11: was just mind blowing and wasn't expecting it.
- 47:01Speaker 10: And honestly, going going up to.
- 47:03Speaker 11: The deer, I thought there was gonna be a lot
- 47:05Speaker 11: of damage, but there was absolutely no damage to the deer.
- 47:08Speaker 11: It was literally just the battery exploded and you could
- 47:11Speaker 11: see where my bullet went through. The went through the neck,
- 47:14Speaker 11: dropped it right and it's right in its.
- 47:15Speaker 2: Track, So yeah, you'd hope so with that impact.
- 47:20Speaker 11: Yeah, right, there was a shooting a two forty three
- 47:24Speaker 11: and it hit the hit that battery and it's crazy.
- 47:27Speaker 11: You could slow it down and there's a giant flash
- 47:29Speaker 11: of light, sparks flying ten fifteen feet in the air,
- 47:33Speaker 11: and then that smoke got a good fifteen twenty feet
- 47:35Speaker 11: in then wow up in the forest there.
- 47:38Speaker 6: So Derek, we got a question from Seth who asked
- 47:40Speaker 6: how far did it run after that?
- 47:44Speaker 10: About two inches? Luckily it was a clean ethical shots,
- 47:50Speaker 10: so he dropped right right.
- 47:53Speaker 2: Yeah, no, uh, no blood trailing needed. Did did wildlife fit?
- 47:58Speaker 2: I mean, you so you posted this on your Instagram
- 48:00Speaker 2: channel and or on your Instagram feed and then it
- 48:04Speaker 2: went viral. Can you tell us like, did wildlife officials
- 48:07Speaker 2: reach out to it all or what was sort of
- 48:09Speaker 2: the reaction that you got after you posted this.
- 48:13Speaker 11: So we were driving down to the lodge when this happened.
- 48:16Speaker 11: Before we got to the lodge, after we threw the
- 48:19Speaker 11: deer in the truck, we were already on the phone
- 48:21Speaker 11: with Utah DNR and and they congratulated me. They said,
- 48:27Speaker 11: you know, great shock, congratulations. And they asked what condition
- 48:30Speaker 11: the parlor was in and it you know, we explained
- 48:34Speaker 11: it and they're like, oh, you go ahead, keep the caller.
- 48:37Speaker 11: It's no of use to us. And they even emailed
- 48:40Speaker 11: me the migration charts.
- 48:42Speaker 2: Oh cool, so nice.
- 48:44Speaker 11: I got to see the summer range, its winter range,
- 48:48Speaker 11: and its year round range, and that deer specifically migrates
- 48:52Speaker 11: twenty one miles round trip from its summer round to
- 48:57Speaker 11: the winter grounds.
- 48:58Speaker 2: That's amazing.
- 49:00Speaker 10: It was pretty cool of that deer put on some miles.
- 49:03Speaker 2: Yeah, whenever I shoot a deer, I always like wonder
- 49:06Speaker 2: what it's individual story is, and it's like you're never
- 49:10Speaker 2: going to get the chance to know that unless it's
- 49:13Speaker 2: like this as an exploding collar, unless that's an exploding collar. Yeah,
- 49:17Speaker 2: so is that gonna go on the Uh You're gonna
- 49:20Speaker 2: do a euro mount and hang the collar on it
- 49:22Speaker 2: or what's the plan there?
- 49:23Speaker 10: I have a euro amount and I have the collar
- 49:25Speaker 10: hanging hanging from it.
- 49:27Speaker 4: Yeah, I do.
- 49:28Speaker 10: So, it was it was cool.
- 49:29Speaker 11: I got, you know, and you asked about like the
- 49:31Speaker 11: like what people said about it afterwards.
- 49:34Speaker 10: But I got a.
- 49:36Speaker 11: Lot of people, you know, people who don't read the
- 49:38Speaker 11: captions because I listed what happened in the entire hunt,
- 49:41Speaker 11: why I was shooting from a vehicle, right, why it
- 49:44Speaker 11: exploded x y Z. Because they got a lot of
- 49:47Speaker 11: hate from shooting from a vehicle, But people didn't you know,
- 49:50Speaker 11: special situation.
- 49:52Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, Derek, I know you use your platform to
- 49:56Speaker 2: advocate for hunters with disabilities, and it's an important message
- 50:00Speaker 2: and I think which you just brought up there, like
- 50:02Speaker 2: there's a lot of you know, ignorance out there, not
- 50:06Speaker 2: only in the hunting community but outside of the hunting
- 50:08Speaker 2: community about folks getting outdoors in different ways. Can you
- 50:13Speaker 2: can you share some of your like advocacy message with
- 50:16Speaker 2: with our audience and kind of what what would you
- 50:19Speaker 2: want other hunters to understand about what it takes to
- 50:23Speaker 2: get you know, for example, a paraplegic like yourself outside.
- 50:28Speaker 11: Yeah, it's you know, every every state out there offers a.
- 50:34Speaker 10: Shoot from a vehicle.
- 50:35Speaker 11: It doesn't have to be a car, could be any
- 50:37Speaker 11: any wheeled vehicle from the road.
- 50:41Speaker 10: You can go out, you can get those.
- 50:44Speaker 11: It's you know, it's tough like I wasn't I wasn't
- 50:47Speaker 11: born paraplegic. You know, I got got into a bad
- 50:51Speaker 11: accident and just just trying to fill the freezer like
- 50:56Speaker 11: anybody else, you know, and players there's a lot less
- 50:59Speaker 11: of us in this position. Then people tend to think
- 51:02Speaker 11: people tend to think, oh, you know, I don't know,
- 51:05Speaker 11: shooting from a car does get abused by a lot
- 51:08Speaker 11: of people. But in reality, like there's no really other
- 51:13Speaker 11: way to do certain types of hunts, Like I still
- 51:17Speaker 11: like to hop hop in the blind you know, choke points.
- 51:19Speaker 10: Food plots, water sources, all that that. That's a lot funner.
- 51:22Speaker 11: But sometimes when you're hunting big steep, rugged mountain terrain,
- 51:26Speaker 11: you know, you're obviously not gonna.
- 51:27Speaker 10: Be rolling your wheelchair through that. So yeah, hopping hopping
- 51:32Speaker 10: in a sideby or a car.
- 51:33Speaker 2: Really, yes, so maybe it really helps, you know.
- 51:35Speaker 10: I'm just trying to feel a freezer.
- 51:37Speaker 2: If folks see someone shooting from a vehicle, don't rush
- 51:41Speaker 2: to judgment about who's doing that and why, right.
- 51:48Speaker 10: Exactly.
- 51:48Speaker 11: Yeah, some some disabilities are super visible, you know, and
- 51:53Speaker 11: some aren't. If you see me rolling down the street,
- 51:56Speaker 11: like this guy's in a wheelchair, you know. But there's
- 51:59Speaker 11: a lot of there's a lot of disabilities out there
- 52:01Speaker 11: that you can apply for a shoot from a vehicle
- 52:04Speaker 11: car that you you couldn't tell just by looking at somebody,
- 52:09Speaker 11: you know, you have to dive deep into their.
- 52:11Speaker 10: Story, hear what they're all about. So yeah, just don't
- 52:16Speaker 10: rest rush to judgment.
- 52:17Speaker 11: We're all out here just trying to feed our families.
- 52:22Speaker 2: Well, Derek, if folks want to hear more about your
- 52:25Speaker 2: story and learn more about your work, where can they
- 52:28Speaker 2: find you?
- 52:30Speaker 10: Yeah?
- 52:30Speaker 11: So my I do a lot of video logging about
- 52:34Speaker 11: my hunts and stuff on Instagram the T eight Underscore Outdoorsmen,
- 52:39Speaker 11: and it's the same for a YouTube channel, T eight
- 52:41Speaker 11: Underscore Outdoorsmen.
- 52:43Speaker 10: And if anyone has a.
- 52:45Speaker 11: Chance to hop on or would like to listen to
- 52:48Speaker 11: th eight outdoors podcast, the podcast I started for people
- 52:52Speaker 11: with disabilities to go out there and hunt and just
- 52:55Speaker 11: their extraordinary stories and how differently logistics apply to their
- 53:01Speaker 11: certain hunts about I got buddies and shooting big ol'
- 53:04Speaker 11: l dragging them out with chairs and so just yeah,
- 53:09Speaker 11: if you hop on and give it a check out
- 53:11Speaker 11: and see what we have to do logistically, it'd be
- 53:13Speaker 11: cool just to bring awareness.
- 53:14Speaker 2: Yeah, well, Derek, thanks, thanks for sharing your story, thanks
- 53:17Speaker 2: for chatting with us, and uh appreciate the work you're doing.
- 53:21Speaker 2: And yeah, hopefully the next year you pull the trigger
- 53:24Speaker 2: and will be a little less uh eventful surprising.
- 53:30Speaker 11: Yeah, it was the most popular forky there on the
- 53:35Speaker 11: internet for probably about two weeks.
- 53:39Speaker 2: Well, Derek, hope you're having a good fall, and uh
- 53:41Speaker 2: maybe we'll chat with you again here soon.
- 53:44Speaker 4: Appreciate you guys, Thank you, thank you Derek Man.
- 53:48Speaker 2: Every time I watch that video, it doesn't get old.
- 53:51Speaker 2: It still shocks me. It's still crazy. I encourage everybody,
- 53:55Speaker 2: if you're just listening, go either check this out on
- 53:58Speaker 2: YouTube or check out Derek since a grand page because
- 54:00Speaker 2: it's a wild wild This brings us to our next segment,
- 54:08Speaker 2: and that's a hot tip off.
- 54:13Speaker 12: That's salty, That's salty.
- 54:26Speaker 4: Love it.
- 54:27Speaker 2: Hot tip Off is where two listeners go head to
- 54:29Speaker 2: head with competing pieces of advice, and after we hear
- 54:33Speaker 2: each tip, we'll declare which one is better, and that
- 54:37Speaker 2: will be by Wheel.
- 54:39Speaker 6: I mean, the audience will choose which I will throw
- 54:42Speaker 6: up a pole in the live chat after we watch
- 54:47Speaker 6: the hot tips.
- 54:47Speaker 2: Yes, please, you don't mind, Phil, Please do that And
- 54:50Speaker 2: if you have a hot tip, take a one minute
- 54:52Speaker 2: video on your phone and email it to Radio at
- 54:54Speaker 2: the meat Eater dot com with the subject line hop
- 54:57Speaker 2: tip Off. This segment is brought to you buy our
- 55:00Speaker 2: good friends at Case Knives, handcrafting high quality knives since
- 55:04Speaker 2: eighteen eighty nine, and the winner of this showdown will
- 55:07Speaker 2: receive a Meat Eater branded case trapper knife at Uncle
- 55:11Speaker 2: Brent will be very pleased with that.
- 55:14Speaker 3: Uncle brand will like it.
- 55:16Speaker 2: All right, Phil, let's hear this week's hot tips.
- 55:20Speaker 3: Ethan Hole.
- 55:25Speaker 13: Hey, this is Ethan from Finalac Wisconsin, and my hot
- 55:28Speaker 13: tip is, as we all know, we need a lot
- 55:33Speaker 13: of room to do our cutting. A lot of times,
- 55:35Speaker 13: big cutting boards aren't cheap. So what we like to
- 55:39Speaker 13: do is we go down to the local home improvement store,
- 55:45Speaker 13: and for thirty dollars you can get a whole four
- 55:48Speaker 13: foot piece of scrap cutoff clearance, lamb and ade countertap.
- 55:53Speaker 8: The worst great is a cutting.
- 55:54Speaker 13: Board, and we have three of them, so we get
- 55:59Speaker 13: twelve feet of cutter space for cutting and butcher. So
- 56:03Speaker 13: for one hundred and twenty bucks, we have twelve whole
- 56:05Speaker 13: feet of basically cutting bar.
- 56:09Speaker 2: Thanks bye, nice Yeah.
- 56:12Speaker 1: Billy Shaw, Hey everybody. Billy here in Minnesota with a
- 56:18Speaker 1: hot tip for you. In response to Spencer's question about.
- 56:22Speaker 7: The best type of gas tank to use, I've got
- 56:24Speaker 7: a better solution. Buy siphon hos anywhere on the internet
- 56:28Speaker 7: or maybe at a hardware store. It's got a check
- 56:31Speaker 7: field on this side. You put your fuel tank anywhere
- 56:35Speaker 7: above the fuel fill on your vehicle, put it in
- 56:38Speaker 7: the vehicle, and then you take this end and you
- 56:41Speaker 7: just ham it down like this, and that gets the
- 56:45Speaker 7: fuel flowing from the tank into your vehicle. This way,
- 56:50Speaker 7: if you don't have a fuel gage, you can look
- 56:51Speaker 7: inside and see how full it is, so you're not
- 56:53Speaker 7: gonna spill everywhere. If you're using a regular tank, there's
- 56:56Speaker 7: no leaking from the tank. And then when you're done,
- 56:59Speaker 7: you just pull up from the fuel tank and the
- 57:02Speaker 7: rest of it. Siphon's down into your vehicle. Much better
- 57:06Speaker 7: solution for filling things like sow and bills, four wheelers
- 57:09Speaker 7: inside by sides.
- 57:11Speaker 4: Mmmmm amen, very familiar with that device exactly. Yeah, good
- 57:15Speaker 4: thing to have in your truck.
- 57:16Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 57:16Speaker 2: Get one at Harbor Freight. I wonder if poll is live.
- 57:21Speaker 2: Get in there.
- 57:21Speaker 5: I wonder if Chester knows Ethan from Fondlise. That's where
- 57:25Speaker 5: Chester's from.
- 57:26Speaker 4: Get out fd Man, a.
- 57:28Speaker 2: Lot of great hot tips coming. How many people possibly
- 57:31Speaker 2: live in Fondolac.
- 57:33Speaker 3: I don't know. I don't know what the population is.
- 57:36Speaker 2: Do you like the countertop trick?
- 57:38Speaker 3: I do. Yeah.
- 57:40Speaker 4: When we redid our counters, I saved two big sections
- 57:43Speaker 4: just for that very thing, So I do that.
- 57:45Speaker 2: You know, it's funny when we redid our counters. When
- 57:48Speaker 2: we redid our counters, I saved all of the butcher block,
- 57:52Speaker 2: and I just cut it into weird shapes. I've got
- 57:55Speaker 2: a piece of butcher block with a with a barrel
- 57:58Speaker 2: of ice on it, so I can pull barrels and
- 58:01Speaker 2: stuff on my truckbed, and I can also put a
- 58:04Speaker 2: reloading I can put a press on there and reload
- 58:08Speaker 2: cases at the range if I'm doing some experimenting with
- 58:11Speaker 2: seating depth things like that. But I have all this
- 58:14Speaker 2: countertop just leaning up against the walls in my barn.
- 58:17Speaker 3: I just like that.
- 58:18Speaker 2: I mean, you could go to you don't even have
- 58:19Speaker 2: to go to home depot. You just go to like
- 58:20Speaker 2: the the home salvage store.
- 58:24Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 58:25Speaker 2: I like to find all my weird stuff.
- 58:26Speaker 5: We did butcher block as well, and yeah, my leftover
- 58:29Speaker 5: chunk is a cutting board now.
- 58:31Speaker 4: Yeah, I love any hot tip that involves recycling stuff.
- 58:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 58:35Speaker 7: Good.
- 58:35Speaker 2: Yeah, But I also feel like anything we can do
- 58:38Speaker 2: to get at big gas, can you know, fight the man,
- 58:42Speaker 2: fight the man and his few mitigating gas cans.
- 58:45Speaker 3: Yeah, I like that. It's kind of tight.
- 58:47Speaker 6: So I'm gonna give you another thirty seconds to get
- 58:50Speaker 6: these last votes and maybe you can sway sway the
- 58:53Speaker 6: tide here.
- 58:53Speaker 2: How many votes total do we have? Phil?
- 58:55Speaker 3: Right now? We have eighty eight votes, but people watch, come.
- 59:01Speaker 4: On, democracy is a right, yeah, even if you're driving,
- 59:04Speaker 4: get on it.
- 59:06Speaker 2: Embarrassing.
- 59:06Speaker 6: This this is this does kind of match up with
- 59:09Speaker 6: the American electoral as far as population to people.
- 59:13Speaker 2: Who actually we're probably higher, yeah, probably performing, So you
- 59:18Speaker 2: take that back you guys are doing great. Let's give
- 59:20Speaker 2: it another five seconds and then we'll call it, because
- 59:23Speaker 2: that's how they do elections.
- 59:25Speaker 8: Too close to Cole.
- 59:27Speaker 2: Sorry, that's that's it.
- 59:30Speaker 3: Okay, pulls over. I was gonna say, I've the which
- 59:37Speaker 3: Steve has one of these now, but we first saw
- 59:40Speaker 3: it from the the guys that do some flying for
- 59:43Speaker 3: us when we mosse on.
- 59:44Speaker 5: Up in Alaska. But they have one of those siphoned
- 59:46Speaker 5: hoses with it in the middle of it. They have
- 59:49Speaker 5: a shut off valve.
- 59:50Speaker 2: Oh yeah, so.
- 59:51Speaker 3: When you know, when it gets full, they can just
- 59:55Speaker 3: hit that shut off valve.
- 59:56Speaker 2: That's smart.
- 59:56Speaker 3: Yeah, which is like a hot tip. With fifteen percent
- 1:00:01Speaker 3: of the vote, the winner is.
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: Ethan with the.
- 1:00:07Speaker 3: Lamon at countertip.
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: Congrats. I also think my favorite part about Ethan's video
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: is just the inside of that shop oh yeah, or
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: barn or whatever it is. It's like that guy is
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: deadly serious about cutting up deer.
- 1:00:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:00:22Speaker 5: I mean, the folks in the in the Upper Midwest
- 1:00:25Speaker 5: take their shop serious.
- 1:00:26Speaker 2: I think good shop culture.
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: They like to hang out in the shops, which I enjoy. Well.
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: Ethan, uh we should he email email radio at the
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: Medeater dot com. Our producer will reach out email Ethan,
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: our producer will reach out to you and get you
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: that meat Eater branded case trapper knife. Congrats on your victory,
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: and uh, thanks for submitting your tip. And thanks to
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: our good friends at case Knives for sponsoring this week's
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: hot tip off. All right, Phil, let's get back in
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: the chat. See people saying.
- 1:01:00Speaker 6: I've been I've been kind of absent from the chat
- 1:01:02Speaker 6: for a little bit. Oh knobs back here. Yeah, pil
- 1:01:06Speaker 6: Steve were here, he'd be acting the exact same way.
- 1:01:09Speaker 6: He'd talk about how he's already posted the job listing
- 1:01:12Speaker 6: looking for a podcast. But Randall, I think you're gonna
- 1:01:16Speaker 6: like this one. This is a question from Mason. I
- 1:01:19Speaker 6: need some gun selling advice. I am trying to sell
- 1:01:22Speaker 6: my grand prize twenty fifth anniversary Christensen's Arms travers in
- 1:01:25Speaker 6: three hundred win bag serial. You know o case here, Remember,
- 1:01:28Speaker 6: he says, He says it's been on gun Broker for
- 1:01:30Speaker 6: a while and I'm not getting much traction. I live
- 1:01:32Speaker 6: in northeast Ohio, Hey, and thought about shipping it to
- 1:01:35Speaker 6: a gun shop out west. Do you have anything to
- 1:01:38Speaker 6: add here?
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: It's a good question. It's a good question. I would be.
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: I mean I'd get it on gun Broker. I don't
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: know what you'd what you'd get for that if it's
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: not getting much traction on gun Broker. Yeah, I mean
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: you might reach out to some gun shops out west
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: that do a lot of I mean there's there's service
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: and shops that'll list your stuff on gun broker and
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: do like a very high end bespoke auction page to
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: maybe get some eyeballs. But I mean I always sell
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: stuff just by plugging it into different forums. And this
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: may not be what you want to hear. But when
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: I'm trying to sell a gun, I low ball myself.
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: So I don't I lower my standards so that I
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: just sell it quickly. I don't have a lot of
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: experience like selling high value items for what they're worth
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: or more. Typically, I just am moving something to move
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: on to the next thing. So Seth, you have thoughts
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: on that.
- 1:02:38Speaker 5: I mean my gun selling advice is don't sell guns,
- 1:02:41Speaker 5: just keep them, hoard them.
- 1:02:43Speaker 3: Yeah, put them in a safe.
- 1:02:45Speaker 4: Get ready for Yeah. Yeah that's a beautiful rifle.
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: Oh yeah, Phil, what else we got here? Good luck
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: to you, Mason.
- 1:02:53Speaker 6: I picked this question because it's incredibly vague, but I
- 1:02:56Speaker 6: think it could open up a discussion of what this
- 1:02:59Speaker 6: actually means. But sisk Grant twenty six asks, what's what
- 1:03:04Speaker 6: is the most admirable non game animal? I think you could. Yeah,
- 1:03:10Speaker 6: admirable could mean different things to different people. I think
- 1:03:12Speaker 6: it's pretty subjective. So so if you guys want to
- 1:03:15Speaker 6: hash that out, I think that'd be fun.
- 1:03:18Speaker 4: Probably a grizzly bear for me.
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess in the lower forty eight.
- 1:03:22Speaker 3: Yeah, that's where you're at.
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: I think that's cheating. I would say, if we're going globally,
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: I would have to say it's one of the great apes,
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: either a gorilla you're here, yeah, chimpanzee or in orangutan.
- 1:03:40Speaker 3: You have a lot of respect for those creatures. I
- 1:03:44Speaker 3: like the wolverine, but you can get them in Alaska.
- 1:03:48Speaker 4: Yeah, not down here though, Yeah, Canada wild animal Yeah.
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know. I'm wondering about things like possums.
- 1:03:59Speaker 5: You can get them, yeah, all over the place.
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: But I wouldn't call it like a game game. Yeah,
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: it's fair. Yeah, you're talking to the trapper here, armadillo? Nah, cheat, No,
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: I think I think the great apes. I'm gonna I'm
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: gonna plant my flag, and these guys don't have good answers.
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: So that's it.
- 1:04:27Speaker 3: Great, we locked it down, Bill, did we did we
- 1:04:30Speaker 3: get it?
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: Do we squeeze enough juice out of that?
- 1:04:32Speaker 3: You know?
- 1:04:32Speaker 6: I thought you guys might squeeze a little bit more,
- 1:04:35Speaker 6: but hey, we'll work with it.
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: I think there's a lot of good questions in there.
- 1:04:38Speaker 6: It's cord asked. I think I know the answer that
- 1:04:40Speaker 6: set Set's answer. What is the weirdest health condition slash diagnosis?
- 1:04:44Speaker 6: Y'all have contracted from the outdoor lifestyle. This includes friends
- 1:04:47Speaker 6: or pets.
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: Just mostly diarrhea. Okay, just a lot of diarrhea.
- 1:04:52Speaker 3: Oh yeah, Jordia, m m yeah.
- 1:04:56Speaker 4: Kept it pretty safe and healthy out there. I don't
- 1:04:58Speaker 4: know Set's mental breakdown here. Not shooting a deer kind
- 1:05:01Speaker 4: of got me concerned, but oh yeah, it's that'll get
- 1:05:04Speaker 4: fixed here.
- 1:05:05Speaker 3: It's something I got to work through myself.
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: I like there's cuts, there's I don't have any trick
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: and nosis stories weird insect bites and beastings, including pets.
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: We had one of our dogs this past winner.
- 1:05:23Speaker 7: Uh.
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: I wish I could remember the name of it. But
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: essentially what she did was poke a hole in her
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: abdomen with a stick and then it filled up with
- 1:05:31Speaker 2: air because her body was working like a bellows and
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: it sucked all this air up under the skin and
- 1:05:37Speaker 2: it was like she had bubble wrap under her Oh wow.
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: Which I always think it's fun when there's something weird
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: with your dog's body and you like google what could
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: this possibly be, and then you figure it out. But yeah,
- 1:05:46Speaker 2: it was a bizarre one. I wish I could remember
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: what that was.
- 1:05:49Speaker 3: And then.
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: And then we told a doctor friend of ours about
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: it and he's like, oh, yeah, bubble wrap and we're
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: like yeah, and he's like, oh, He's like that happens
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: all the time, and you give chest tubes. I was like,
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: all right, drained the air. Yeah, so wild. Anyway, that's
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: what I got so far, so good.
- 1:06:09Speaker 3: Great hitting these.
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: Out of the park, I phil.
- 1:06:11Speaker 3: Yeah, guys are doing great.
- 1:06:12Speaker 6: On the note of diarrhea, friday Eras asked Randall, would
- 1:06:15Speaker 6: you rather give a pot dogs or briskool?
- 1:06:18Speaker 8: Now that's a question.
- 1:06:20Speaker 3: Randle's getting real serious.
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: I think I think the honest answer, Well, there's two answers.
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: If I could give up beer, I would that's a
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: big as I don't but I don't think I can.
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: I've never been able to make that commitment to myself
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: and my loved ones. So I think the honest answer
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: is I would have to give up pot dogs. But
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: if you were gonna, like, you know, brainwash me somehow,
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: like office space, hypnotize me, I'd probably say get rid
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: of the drinking, because the drinking actually leads to more
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: hot dog eating. Yeah, but he says, bruskies, could you
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: you could? You could resort to, like become a whine.
- 1:07:08Speaker 5: Up brown liquor or something, you know, Oh, I can't
- 1:07:10Speaker 5: drink the spirits.
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I get out of control. I get out
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: of control. Well, yeah, before we I mean, yeah, it's
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: a good question. I wish I had a better answer
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: for you. If Yeah, if it was like someone said,
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: you have to give up one or the other, and
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: it's all on you and your self control. Otherwise I'll
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: find you and you know, put a bullet in your head,
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: I'd probably say hot dogs. It would be easier to do.
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: But if I could hypnotize myself, i'd say beer because
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: it's probably the healthier choice. Great, great, knocked another one
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: out of the park.
- 1:07:43Speaker 6: Keeping come and fill here's one back here's a question
- 1:07:47Speaker 6: that I can contribute a little something to. Is this
- 1:07:49Speaker 6: from Wally Bloomer? Not sure what size brooks Down sweater
- 1:07:52Speaker 6: to buy? I wear a large sweatshirt and a medium
- 1:07:55Speaker 6: T shirt. Which way would you go? Yes, I would
- 1:07:58Speaker 6: say large because I wear a large T shirt, So
- 1:08:03Speaker 6: I'm guessing I'm like a slightly bigger than you, and
- 1:08:05Speaker 6: my large brooks Down sweater is like just barely smaller
- 1:08:10Speaker 6: than what I would want, So I think it would
- 1:08:12Speaker 6: fit you pretty well. Then again, I brought I mine's.
- 1:08:14Speaker 6: I think mine's like a different about mine years ago,
- 1:08:17Speaker 6: So it might be a different sort of cut or
- 1:08:19Speaker 6: something that they do now, but I would say large
- 1:08:21Speaker 6: for sure.
- 1:08:22Speaker 4: It should be about the same. Yeah, I'm kind of
- 1:08:23Speaker 4: in that same boat there, wearing large items and medium items.
- 1:08:27Speaker 4: I go big because the brooks Down you can still
- 1:08:30Speaker 4: wear it just a tad big. If it's too small,
- 1:08:33Speaker 4: you're not gonna lay under lay under it, and they're
- 1:08:36Speaker 4: so light you're not going to feel the difference if
- 1:08:38Speaker 4: you're worried about packability, the difference between a medium and
- 1:08:40Speaker 4: a large.
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I like to wear that. I like to wear
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: the brooks Down with like a fleece hoodie underneath.
- 1:08:46Speaker 4: So put it on over your bino harness if it's
- 1:08:50Speaker 4: a little bit.
- 1:08:51Speaker 3: I like to wear with that hoodie under.
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: The first I was, I've been wearing this one a lot. Yeah,
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: and I got another one for like a nice looking
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: one mm hmm. And now this one's just like mucking
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: around hoodie.
- 1:09:07Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: Oh are you.
- 1:09:08Speaker 4: Mucking around right now?
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: We'll be later ready, Yeah, this is my mucking around
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: herdie cool.
- 1:09:17Speaker 6: Let's do one more here, and this is gonna be
- 1:09:18Speaker 6: kind of like this is going to be a double
- 1:09:20Speaker 6: plug question since we just did a very practical but
- 1:09:23Speaker 6: first like question, Roe says Phil, I have a question.
- 1:09:26Speaker 6: Most weeks, they stream the live show as a podcast
- 1:09:28Speaker 6: the next day. Do y'all see that a lot? That
- 1:09:30Speaker 6: is how we see it most of the time. Row
- 1:09:34Speaker 6: like only you know, sub one thousand people will dip
- 1:09:38Speaker 6: in and out live, but then you know, it gets
- 1:09:40Speaker 6: thousands of views as it goes on, and that's only
- 1:09:42Speaker 6: on YouTube. The podcast gets tens of thousands of downloads
- 1:09:45Speaker 6: after that. So so like you're you're you're not alone.
- 1:09:48Speaker 6: But I will say, because since we don't do this enough,
- 1:09:51Speaker 6: in my opinion, we never plug our own YouTube channels
- 1:09:55Speaker 6: or the podcast one. Really we we I think we said, hey,
- 1:09:58Speaker 6: you should go subscribe to it, yeah, when it first
- 1:10:00Speaker 6: launched years ago. But please subscribe to the Mediat podcast
- 1:10:05Speaker 6: Network YouTube channel if you have not done so, I
- 1:10:07Speaker 6: I think most of the people here live probably have.
- 1:10:10Speaker 6: But if you're a podcast listener, dip on over there
- 1:10:12Speaker 6: and hit that subscribe button.
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: Yeah, the Mediat podcast is it? Mediator podcast Network?
- 1:10:17Speaker 3: Yes, I believe so.
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: Mediator podcast Network YouTube channel. It's a separate channel from
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: the just standard Mediator channel. And you'll if you'd ever
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: wondered what Corey looks like and you don't have social media,
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: you'll want to check that out.
- 1:10:32Speaker 4: Yeah, get up on that.
- 1:10:33Speaker 3: Get a look at him.
- 1:10:34Speaker 2: Yeah, get a good look at this guy.
- 1:10:36Speaker 3: You won't regret it.
- 1:10:37Speaker 2: He said, He's a large, sometimes a medium sometimes.
- 1:10:46Speaker 3: Phil.
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: We got any more? We got any more?
- 1:10:48Speaker 3: Well, how how long do you want to keep We've
- 1:10:50Speaker 3: got some more questions.
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: Track there, just some.
- 1:10:54Speaker 6: It's hard because a lot of people come in with
- 1:10:56Speaker 6: good intentions and ask pretty good questions. But it's a
- 1:10:58Speaker 6: question that we answered a week ago or a couple
- 1:11:00Speaker 6: of weeks ago, and I don't want it to be
- 1:11:02Speaker 6: too repetitive. But we can just keep digging through some
- 1:11:06Speaker 6: of these questions if you want. Some of them are
- 1:11:07Speaker 6: kind of are vague, like for some reason or for
- 1:11:10Speaker 6: examples from Jordan, we're heading to Kentucky today to hunt
- 1:11:13Speaker 6: for three days on public with no information. What is
- 1:11:16Speaker 6: the best plan to start hunting white tail deer because
- 1:11:19Speaker 6: it's kind of open ended, right like scouting.
- 1:11:22Speaker 5: Yeah, I would say scout for a day and a
- 1:11:24Speaker 5: half and hunt for a day and a half.
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: Ooh, that's good advice. I'd see it's.
- 1:11:30Speaker 5: Spend three days sitting in a spot where there's no deer. Yeah,
- 1:11:33Speaker 5: but if you scout, you can really narrow it in.
- 1:11:36Speaker 2: And make cute, make half your trip real productive. Yep,
- 1:11:40Speaker 2: that's a great idea. That's pretty good because if you
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: double your productivity of a day and a half by
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: scouting for a day and a half, essentially get those
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: scouting hours back by the double productivity. So it's like
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: you get to hunt for three days and scout for
- 1:11:54Speaker 2: a day and a half because you're doubling the productivity
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: of those day and a half.
- 1:11:57Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a great that pencils.
- 1:12:00Speaker 4: Out top that tip.
- 1:12:03Speaker 6: Oh, here's the question for seth photography questions. Do you
- 1:12:05Speaker 6: prefer faster, lightweight prime lenses or heavier, slower zooms when
- 1:12:09Speaker 6: out in the field.
- 1:12:10Speaker 5: Well, I typically go with the zooms because I can
- 1:12:14Speaker 5: cover a lot of things with just one lens. But
- 1:12:20Speaker 5: I prefer a prime mmm, specifically a fifty Wow. Primes
- 1:12:26Speaker 5: are just cooler, they look better, but you know you
- 1:12:29Speaker 5: can't always get the shot with the prime, especially in
- 1:12:32Speaker 5: hunting situations where things happen quickly, and you know, it's
- 1:12:37Speaker 5: nice to have the range.
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: Phil, is that it?
- 1:12:42Speaker 6: Well, how we can keep going? It's your show, Randall,
- 1:12:45Speaker 6: tell me what you let's.
- 1:12:46Speaker 3: Call that it.
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: I'm looking at the clock. I realize we're keeping people
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: late here. We do have one last item, and that
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: is a bit of housekeeping before we go today, we've
- 1:12:57Speaker 2: got to address the elephant in the room. Next Thursday
- 1:13:01Speaker 2: is Thanksgiving Day, so none of us will be here
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: in studio for our weekly Thursday broadcast, but the show
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: must go on. So this time next week we'll be
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: airing a pre recorded podcast episode with Steve and some
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: of the crew. As always, please tune in, especially if
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: you already need a break from the kitchen or your family.
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: But please know that the chat will be unsupervised, and
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: so if you have a pressing question that you'd like
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: addressed on this show.
- 1:13:23Speaker 6: Actually I need to interrupt you here. It is not
- 1:13:25Speaker 6: a radio live episode. This is a it's going to
- 1:13:28Speaker 6: it's a Meat Eater podcast episode. Crew at crew episode.
- 1:13:31Speaker 6: I don't think we're going to be live streaming it.
- 1:13:33Speaker 6: It's just going to drop. It's going to drop, Randal,
- 1:13:35Speaker 6: you really, yeah, I don't.
- 1:13:39Speaker 4: Can we redo this.
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: Or you should have told me that before we went
- 1:13:42Speaker 2: We're live? Now?
- 1:13:43Speaker 3: Should we just end it? Now?
- 1:13:45Speaker 6: Hey, Randall, if you have a problem with the way
- 1:13:47Speaker 6: I run the show back, we just I don't want
- 1:13:49Speaker 6: you to talk about it behind the mike.
- 1:13:51Speaker 3: It's embarrassing for me.
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: So if you have a pressing question for pull it together,
- 1:13:57Speaker 2: if you have a pressing question for the crew, rand
- 1:14:02Speaker 2: David until our next Meet Eater Live on December fourth, December.
- 1:14:06Speaker 2: This is a really bad look for you Thursday, December.
- 1:14:08Speaker 2: I think it's a bad look for you. I mean no,
- 1:14:10Speaker 2: I'm fine. I was told to wrong. I was told
- 1:14:13Speaker 2: to address this and and prepare the audience for next
- 1:14:15Speaker 2: week's schedule. But I was given incomplete information, and so
- 1:14:18Speaker 2: now I look like a fool.
- 1:14:20Speaker 6: You're right, you guys should hash this out a little later. Hey,
- 1:14:23Speaker 6: as always, you want to grab a beer after this?
- 1:14:25Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:14:26Speaker 3: As always, hot dog.
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: As always, thanks for tuning in, guys, hope you enjoyed
- 1:14:32Speaker 2: the show. We'll review some of the feedback and decide
- 1:14:35Speaker 2: whether there will be another segment of Me Theater. I'm
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: thinking it's likely. Doubtful.
- 1:14:39Speaker 3: No, it's happening, but uh, appreciate you great.
- 1:14:43Speaker 2: Calls and uh and enjoy the hunting this time of year.
- 1:14:48Speaker 3: Happy Thanksgiving early.
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: Happy Thanksgiving, Thanksgiving? All right, Phil? Play the cut music
