- 0:07Speaker 1: Hello everybody, and welcome to another edition of Cardinal Territory.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Jim Hays alongside Lance Linn. We didn't hear from Kyle Gibson. Lance,
- 0:15Speaker 1: I don't know what's going on with Kyle. We thought
- 0:17Speaker 1: he might pop in, right.
- 0:20Speaker 2: You think, I mean, I'm just here at work. I'm
- 0:22Speaker 2: taking time out of my workday to be here with you, Kyle.
- 0:25Speaker 3: You know he's busy.
- 0:26Speaker 2: I get it. You know I've got kids too. But
- 0:28Speaker 2: you know, some people are in, some people are out.
- 0:30Speaker 3: Get how it is? All right?
- 0:32Speaker 1: Hopefully we'll get them back in as we speak. It's
- 0:35Speaker 1: really really hot in Saint Louis. The Cards just drop
- 0:38Speaker 1: two of three to the Reds, and the Cubs are
- 0:40Speaker 1: in town. But before we get to all that, right,
- 0:44Speaker 1: let's revisit something. Let's get some subscribers going. So if
- 0:48Speaker 1: you like Cardinal Territory, we're still trying to get the
- 0:51Speaker 1: seven thubs, got seven thousand subs, So go ahead, hit
- 0:55Speaker 1: the subscribe button.
- 0:56Speaker 3: Tell your friends about it. They'll like it.
- 0:58Speaker 1: If you have like a chiropractor an orthodonis, tell him
- 1:01Speaker 1: to subscribe because we're still trying to get to seven thousand.
- 1:05Speaker 1: All right, it's literally one hundred degrees in Saint Louis,
- 1:11Speaker 1: whatever the you know, the actual temperature, it's past that,
- 1:14Speaker 1: so if you're down on the field, you are melting.
- 1:17Speaker 1: And I think it does impact games, like you saw
- 1:19Speaker 1: the game yesterday kind of slow motion because it's really
- 1:23Speaker 1: really hot. Once were you a guy that hated pitching in.
- 1:26Speaker 2: The heat, especially earlier on in my career, because it
- 1:30Speaker 2: usually when it was a day game, and day games
- 1:34Speaker 2: were not my friend. Early on in my career, I
- 1:36Speaker 2: just couldn't, like, I don't know what it was. As
- 1:40Speaker 2: the time went on, I figured it out a little bit.
- 1:43Speaker 2: I think there's really it's really hard to understand what
- 1:49Speaker 2: guys are going through and all that on a hot
- 1:51Speaker 2: day like that. So yes, it can impact things. I
- 1:57Speaker 2: think when I was older, I realized, like, we're all
- 2:00Speaker 2: out here, we're all having to deal with it, So
- 2:02Speaker 2: you need to figure out how to be the best
- 2:05Speaker 2: of dealing with it that day to not let it
- 2:08Speaker 2: so you can win the game. Because everyone's miserable, everyone
- 2:11Speaker 2: is hot, everyone is tired because of how hot it is.
- 2:15Speaker 2: You need to figure out how to outlast everyone or
- 2:19Speaker 2: be better at dealing with it than the other guys.
- 2:20Speaker 2: So you can win the game instead of letting it
- 2:23Speaker 2: take over. It's like, oh, it's so hot, this is
- 2:25Speaker 2: killing kill me. So when I went to Texas, I
- 2:29Speaker 2: think that was when I really learned how to deal
- 2:31Speaker 2: with it in a way that I took. I took
- 2:35Speaker 2: advantage of it when I was in Texas and won
- 2:37Speaker 2: a lot of ball games in an old ballpark in
- 2:40Speaker 2: Arlington because guys would come in and be it was
- 2:43Speaker 2: too hot for him. And you have to figure out
- 2:46Speaker 2: a different routine, a different way to stay cool, stay dry,
- 2:51Speaker 2: do a lot of different things.
- 2:52Speaker 3: And as my.
- 2:53Speaker 2: Career went on, I remember, just early on my care
- 2:55Speaker 2: I remember sweat dripping off of the bill in my
- 2:58Speaker 2: cap while I'm trying to pitch, and you're just like,
- 3:01Speaker 2: I can't get dry, the ball slick. And then as
- 3:04Speaker 2: you went on, it's like, hey, I need to change
- 3:06Speaker 2: hats every other inning or every inning, and then I
- 3:09Speaker 2: need to change my under shirt and my jersey every
- 3:12Speaker 2: other inning or whatever. And then you start finding those things.
- 3:15Speaker 2: So this is a young group and they haven't you know,
- 3:20Speaker 2: been able to, you know, tinker with their approaches in
- 3:24Speaker 2: games and stuff like that to do that, just like
- 3:27Speaker 2: I did it early on in my career. But it
- 3:29Speaker 2: takes time and it takes you know, some thinking of
- 3:35Speaker 2: different ways to do it. And then I always thought
- 3:38Speaker 2: about this as I went on, the faster I can
- 3:40Speaker 2: get my team off the field, and the faster their
- 3:42Speaker 2: teams back out on the field, the better chance we
- 3:45Speaker 2: had to win that day. So that's kind of the
- 3:47Speaker 2: way I went went forward at the end of my
- 3:48Speaker 2: career or as my career went on.
- 3:51Speaker 1: So as I'm sitting in the camera well next to
- 3:54Speaker 1: the dugout, it's really hot, and I was thinking about this.
- 3:56Speaker 1: I was like, I can't wait to ask Glance about this.
- 4:00Speaker 1: But the starting pitchers are watching the game, they're in
- 4:04Speaker 1: the dugout watching. You're a veteran pitcher, you're not pitching.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Do you have to be in the dugout? Is some
- 4:12Speaker 1: of that performative to have the starters out there for
- 4:15Speaker 1: the team concept? Because we've heard stories, you know in
- 4:18Speaker 1: Boston where guys were eating fried chicken back in the
- 4:22Speaker 1: clubhouse while the game was on.
- 4:23Speaker 3: Some folks didn't like that. You're a veteran guy.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Do you have to be sitting in one hundred and
- 4:29Speaker 1: ten degree heat as a starting pitcher.
- 4:31Speaker 3: That's not pitching? To watch the game.
- 4:34Speaker 2: You technically do not have to be, but it is
- 4:37Speaker 2: a dick move not to be out there somewhat. So
- 4:42Speaker 2: that's kind of the thought process is throughout the games, whether.
- 4:46Speaker 3: It's hot or whether it's whatever.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Starters have different routines because they try to, you know,
- 4:51Speaker 2: stay out of the everyday guy's way of getting ready
- 4:54Speaker 2: for games and stuff like that. So you you there's
- 4:57Speaker 2: you know, there's only so many trainers and so many
- 4:59Speaker 2: things that you can do before the game, and you
- 5:02Speaker 2: need to stay out of those guys way because they
- 5:03Speaker 2: have to play. So there's a rotation that you have
- 5:06Speaker 2: that you go in there and get some work done
- 5:08Speaker 2: and stuff like that. You know, were there times that
- 5:11Speaker 2: I overstayed. Yes, when it was hot, I'm not gonna
- 5:15Speaker 2: deny that. But when you're a young kid, as a veteran,
- 5:18Speaker 2: you make sure they don't overstay their time inside, so
- 5:22Speaker 2: they make sure that they're in the dugout. But every
- 5:25Speaker 2: team I was on, you tried to make sure at
- 5:27Speaker 2: least three of the five or three of the four,
- 5:31Speaker 2: two of the four were always in the dugout. And
- 5:33Speaker 2: if you look around. I remember one time we looked
- 5:35Speaker 2: around and I was like one, two, three, four, And
- 5:38Speaker 2: I was like, hey, where there's we're all in here.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Two of us have got to go and I'm not going.
- 5:44Speaker 2: So you three figured it out. So yes, that's kind
- 5:48Speaker 2: of how it goes. And it goes by a hierarchy.
- 5:50Speaker 2: And I remember when I was young, Jake Westboro, Kyle
- 5:53Speaker 2: Lose and Wainwright they were like, hey, you have a
- 5:57Speaker 2: you have a half inning, or you have an inning,
- 5:59Speaker 2: go now and then that's you got your time. And
- 6:01Speaker 2: then they they went, you know, one of them would
- 6:04Speaker 2: go after the second, one of them would go after
- 6:06Speaker 2: the fourth to do their things, and then they'd come
- 6:08Speaker 2: back a couple of innings later an later.
- 6:10Speaker 3: So it's a rotation.
- 6:11Speaker 2: And it's the same with it's the same with bench guys.
- 6:13Speaker 2: You want your bench guys out there, but you also like, hey,
- 6:16Speaker 2: I don't need to sit You don't need to sit
- 6:17Speaker 2: there and get baked in the heat before you, you know,
- 6:19Speaker 2: have to go into a game or something like that,
- 6:21Speaker 2: like let's go down on the tunnel. You know you
- 6:23Speaker 2: can take your swings, stay loose, but also stay in
- 6:25Speaker 2: and where it's not as hot and you can kind
- 6:28Speaker 2: of bounce in and out as you need to go there.
- 6:29Speaker 2: So with all these coaches now the dugout's full.
- 6:32Speaker 3: Anyways, you don't need all these paple. I will say
- 6:35Speaker 3: this though.
- 6:36Speaker 1: The hitting cage is air conditioned and there's a lot
- 6:39Speaker 1: of guys in there getting their swings.
- 6:41Speaker 3: Then, so I think, hey, that's what I do.
- 6:43Speaker 2: What I'm saying, I learned at the end of my career,
- 6:44Speaker 2: right in between every inning, and I didn't sit in
- 6:46Speaker 2: the dugout when I was pitching.
- 6:48Speaker 3: I went straight down to the tunnel.
- 6:49Speaker 2: I had a change of shirt and a change of jersey,
- 6:52Speaker 2: and I had a fan on me, and I was
- 6:54Speaker 2: sitting there and you can ask Dusty, Dusty, come down,
- 6:57Speaker 2: we go over the next inning of hitters that are
- 7:00Speaker 2: coming in. You know what I did to him before?
- 7:02Speaker 2: What I what we plan on doing? What are we seeing?
- 7:04Speaker 2: What we're working today? And I'm sitting there drinking water,
- 7:08Speaker 2: shirtless with a fan on me. And then he'd tell me, hey,
- 7:11Speaker 2: we've got too and I would, I would, you know,
- 7:13Speaker 2: saddle back up and hunt hoof it on out there
- 7:15Speaker 2: and try to get three outs fast possible.
- 7:18Speaker 3: Smart smart all right.
- 7:19Speaker 1: Cards have gone three and seven over their last ten
- 7:23Speaker 1: game over five hundred right now and the Cubs are
- 7:25Speaker 1: in ten, so Cardinal fans. Whether the team's winning losing,
- 7:30Speaker 1: there's something special about the Cubs rivalry. Is it for
- 7:33Speaker 1: the players to or is it more for the fans
- 7:36Speaker 1: for the do the Do the players feel that vibe.
- 7:38Speaker 3: To thank you? Yeah? You feel it.
- 7:42Speaker 2: I mean there's no way to not because everywhere you've
- 7:45Speaker 2: played your whole life, you have rivalries, right and you
- 7:48Speaker 2: know about them.
- 7:49Speaker 3: Now.
- 7:49Speaker 2: The question is, is today's age are they as heated
- 7:53Speaker 2: as they used to be? No, because there's too many
- 7:55Speaker 2: players that change change sides as over the course of
- 7:59Speaker 2: the years and stuff like that. But as a player,
- 8:02Speaker 2: you know when the fans come in and they're rooting
- 8:04Speaker 2: against you, or when you go there the fans are
- 8:06Speaker 2: rooting against you. So that's where you feel a rivalry
- 8:09Speaker 2: as most any in any sport. So it's one of
- 8:12Speaker 2: the better ones. I gotta play for the Yankees and
- 8:14Speaker 2: I gotta play for the Dodgers. The Cardinals Cubs are
- 8:18Speaker 2: a great rivalry, The Yankees, Red Sox great one, and
- 8:21Speaker 2: then the Dodgers in. You know, heck, the Dodgers in
- 8:25Speaker 2: and the Giants are great when they come in. They're
- 8:27Speaker 2: all similar. Fans hate each other. They don't get along.
- 8:29Speaker 2: I'd say the fans probably get along the best in
- 8:32Speaker 2: Saint Louis and in Chicago than they do in the
- 8:34Speaker 2: other two places. But as a player, you still feel
- 8:37Speaker 2: those rivalry just as much.
- 8:39Speaker 1: Yes, because in Saint Louis the Cubs Cardinals rival. No
- 8:43Speaker 1: one loses their life, Okay, So it's more of a
- 8:46Speaker 1: civilized exactly.
- 8:47Speaker 3: It's a little bit, a little bit friendlier.
- 8:51Speaker 1: So there's always a villain with the Cubs. Right to me,
- 8:54Speaker 1: the number one guy zam Brono. But there's plenty of
- 8:57Speaker 1: them you could name right now. When Peter Rais was
- 8:59Speaker 1: there for a little bit and then he came over
- 9:01Speaker 1: the right.
- 9:01Speaker 3: That's true. That's true. That's true.
- 9:03Speaker 1: PCA is the number one villain now. He hit a
- 9:07Speaker 1: homer last last series in Saint Louis into the tarps off.
- 9:12Speaker 3: They were chanting over it. I love the stick. Okay.
- 9:15Speaker 3: What does lanceln think about pc A?
- 9:17Speaker 1: Because I love guys that leave it out out on
- 9:20Speaker 1: the field and don't mind saying some stuff.
- 9:24Speaker 2: I love what he's built himself into, right, I respect
- 9:28Speaker 2: for that he went through it early on in his career.
- 9:32Speaker 2: I mean, I don't know my exact numbers against him.
- 9:35Speaker 2: But I remember my last year I was I think
- 9:37Speaker 2: it was his full first year up he was an out.
- 9:40Speaker 2: That was the feeling in the you know, in the
- 9:43Speaker 2: game planning and stuff like that. It's like, hey, he
- 9:46Speaker 2: is an out unless you like, don't walk him. Don't
- 9:49Speaker 2: you know do this? You know, but obviously you can't
- 9:52Speaker 2: just scroove one right down the middle because you can
- 9:54Speaker 2: make you pay. But if you pitch him the way
- 9:55Speaker 2: you're supposed to, you you should be an out. And
- 10:00Speaker 2: then now you turn him into an All Star World
- 10:03Speaker 2: Baseball Classic Team member and all that, you see the
- 10:06Speaker 2: rise of a kid that was very talented and went
- 10:09Speaker 2: through it. So I respect him what he's done as
- 10:13Speaker 2: a player and all that. And I think when you
- 10:15Speaker 2: are young and you're trying to figure out who you are,
- 10:17Speaker 2: you are he kind of had that swagger about him.
- 10:19Speaker 2: But when you don't do well, you can't show it.
- 10:22Speaker 2: So I love for a guy to be able to
- 10:24Speaker 2: play well and show you that they're playing well. Because
- 10:29Speaker 2: if he was a cardinal right, they would love him. Man,
- 10:32Speaker 2: what a hard nosed player is a A what a
- 10:35Speaker 2: guy that just he just tells you the truth. But
- 10:37Speaker 2: as a as a as an opponent, that guy's a dick.
- 10:41Speaker 3: Right, and I hate him.
- 10:43Speaker 2: But those are the guys that you love as teammates
- 10:45Speaker 2: you hate to play against, and as a baseball fan,
- 10:48Speaker 2: that's fun for the game, there really is. And you
- 10:51Speaker 2: want to root against somebody, right, So why not let
- 10:54Speaker 2: him be Hey, go do your things. I can root
- 10:55Speaker 2: against you, or go do your things. I can root
- 10:57Speaker 2: for you if that's my team.
- 10:59Speaker 1: You gave a perfect example Contreras Cardinal fans hated him
- 11:02Speaker 1: when he was a club. They loved him when he
- 11:04Speaker 1: was one of their guys. All right, lots of great
- 11:07Speaker 1: things to get out and see this summer. Maybe you
- 11:10Speaker 1: want to go see a Major League Baseball game. That's
- 11:13Speaker 1: where our friends at sea geeks come into play.

- 11:31Speaker 1: percent off your next purchase of MLB tickets. Sea Geek
- 11:36Speaker 1: is an official marketplace of MLB. Every purchase, by the way,
- 11:40Speaker 1: is guaranteed. Thank you Seekeeek. Well Lance, it's a hug
- 11:46Speaker 1: watch time. You know what Hug watches because the trade
- 11:49Speaker 1: deadline's approaching any day now, we might see an out
- 11:53Speaker 1: of the blue Hug in the dugout or prior to
- 11:56Speaker 1: the game. What's that like for a player when you're
- 11:59Speaker 1: up against the trade deadline and you know maybe you
- 12:02Speaker 1: a teammate is probably gonna be on the move. What's
- 12:06Speaker 1: that like for players?
- 12:08Speaker 2: It's a little weird, right I think. When So, here's
- 12:11Speaker 2: the thing, when you know it's coming. I got I've
- 12:13Speaker 2: got traded twice at the deadline, and I knew that
- 12:17Speaker 2: it was coming. There's nothing worse than when you get blindsided.
- 12:22Speaker 2: And usually you get blindsided when you are a team
- 12:26Speaker 2: that is going for it and you lose a guy that.
- 12:30Speaker 3: Is expendable to get an upgrade. So those those times suck.
- 12:35Speaker 2: Like we go to the Alan Graide Joe Kelly thing
- 12:38Speaker 2: back in the day, right you we didn't We did
- 12:39Speaker 2: not see that one coming. So that one was like,
- 12:41Speaker 2: oh yeah, what right? And then when you're like, hey,
- 12:47Speaker 2: I'm a five we're a five hundred team, and this
- 12:49Speaker 2: guy's expiring contract and it's obvious that you know there's
- 12:52Speaker 2: a chance there's a good chance of that guy's getting traded.
- 12:55Speaker 2: You're just like you're already packed, and you're you're already
- 12:58Speaker 2: starting to pack.
- 12:59Speaker 3: You're already ready to go.
- 13:00Speaker 2: Everyone knows that's part of the business. And you're like, hey, man,
- 13:03Speaker 2: I love you, but I'm going to probably go to
- 13:05Speaker 2: a chance to win and I've enjoyed my time here,
- 13:10Speaker 2: but you know, we'll see, we'll see what happens when
- 13:12Speaker 2: I'm free agent, if I can come back, blah blah blah.
- 13:14Speaker 2: But there's two totally different vibes that can really get you.
- 13:20Speaker 2: It's weird. It's like, especially if you don't want to
- 13:21Speaker 2: go anywhere and or you're you know, hey, i've got
- 13:24Speaker 2: two more years left on my deal and I don't
- 13:26Speaker 2: want to go to that team, it sucks. But if
- 13:28Speaker 2: you're like, hey, I'm going to be a free agent
- 13:31Speaker 2: and I want to go somewhere to win and you
- 13:33Speaker 2: know we're not going for it, it's like, hey, cool,
- 13:35Speaker 2: I'm gonna make the best of the situations.
- 13:38Speaker 3: So there's a lot of different ways you can take it.
- 13:41Speaker 1: I think it's worth retelling the the Kelly Craig trade
- 13:44Speaker 1: for Lackey, Right, So teams in San Diego, they just
- 13:49Speaker 1: completed the deal mo in San Diego. The hotel is
- 13:53Speaker 1: like twenty yards from the ballpark. Mo had completed the
- 13:56Speaker 1: deal and was on his way to the clubhouse, which
- 13:59Speaker 1: was open at the time. Right media's in there, and
- 14:03Speaker 1: Moe was coming across the street to tell the players
- 14:07Speaker 1: to tell Craig and to tell Kelly about the trade.
- 14:10Speaker 1: Apparently one of the agents leaked it, and all of
- 14:13Speaker 1: a sudden, it's on the ESPN crawl and that's where
- 14:17Speaker 1: they saw it.
- 14:17Speaker 3: And you saw, I mean.
- 14:19Speaker 1: Major leaguers with tears in their eyes because Kelly didn't
- 14:22Speaker 1: want to go, and certainly Craig didn't want to go,
- 14:25Speaker 1: and no one told them, So I mean, that's the
- 14:28Speaker 1: tough part. And you mentioned like, if you're a guy
- 14:30Speaker 1: that's married, you have a family, and you didn't expect
- 14:33Speaker 1: to go, all of a sudden, you're calling your wife
- 14:34Speaker 1: and you're like, hey, sell the house, and you know,
- 14:38Speaker 1: I'll see you when I can. It's not easy the
- 14:40Speaker 1: family's involved.
- 14:42Speaker 2: That was when I learned early on not to buy
- 14:44Speaker 2: where I played, because who knows when they'll ship your
- 14:46Speaker 2: ass out of there. So I was a rinner.
- 14:51Speaker 1: Have you been in a situation where you're like, please
- 14:54Speaker 1: get me out of here. Please get me I want
- 14:55Speaker 1: to be traded, Please get me out of here.
- 14:59Speaker 2: I would say the both times that I was traded
- 15:03Speaker 2: in Minnesota and when I was with the White Sox,
- 15:06Speaker 2: I went to the Yankees and Dodgers, it wasn't get
- 15:09Speaker 2: me out of here. It was one of those things
- 15:12Speaker 2: where it's like, hey, if you're selling, make sure I'm
- 15:16Speaker 2: on that list of sale items. So that was maybe
- 15:22Speaker 2: that's mad is Hey, I want to be out of here.
- 15:24Speaker 2: But it's like, no, like I you know, obviously you're
- 15:26Speaker 2: playing on teams that are if they're selling, you're not
- 15:28Speaker 2: doing well.
- 15:30Speaker 3: You know.
- 15:30Speaker 2: In Minnesota, I think I was. You know, at both times,
- 15:33Speaker 2: you're just like you see it on the wall and
- 15:35Speaker 2: you're like, you know, if I don't want to be
- 15:37Speaker 2: a little leftover piece. So it's like and if they
- 15:41Speaker 2: come and ask you, you're like, yeah, put me in
- 15:43Speaker 2: there or make me, make me on the market, if
- 15:46Speaker 2: that makes sense. So but I you know, I never
- 15:49Speaker 2: signed anywhere where I was like, hey, I want to
- 15:52Speaker 2: be out. It's like, hey, if it comes to it,
- 15:55Speaker 2: I'm cool with going. And I think a lot of
- 15:57Speaker 2: people were like that, nobody if you want out, you know,
- 16:00Speaker 2: it's pretty you know, it's got to be pretty bad.
- 16:03Speaker 3: But I would say I can't. I'm on line.
- 16:06Speaker 2: I'm lying now, I'm lying. That last year in Chicago
- 16:08Speaker 2: when I went to l A, I wanted out.
- 16:11Speaker 1: It was a zoo in Chicago. You with the White Sox,
- 16:14Speaker 1: that team was like just a ship lost at sea?
- 16:17Speaker 3: Was that that last year? Was it got? Uh?
- 16:21Speaker 2: It was it just we just did not play well.
- 16:24Speaker 2: And then when you know, when Tony got that first
- 16:28Speaker 2: year with Tony and everybody, we played well, we won
- 16:30Speaker 2: the division. The next year we were we were a
- 16:33Speaker 2: five hundred team underachieved. Then we had new new manager,
- 16:38Speaker 2: a lot of new coaches, and a lot of a
- 16:41Speaker 2: lot of people figuring out what direction that place was
- 16:44Speaker 2: actually going. And it was we were not playing well
- 16:47Speaker 2: and it was not a not the best of best
- 16:51Speaker 2: of vibes.
- 16:53Speaker 1: So the Cardinals are in a kind of bad situation
- 16:56Speaker 1: right now. Hopefully they'll bust out of it. One of
- 16:58Speaker 1: the things I think kind of lies under the radar
- 17:01Speaker 1: is the Cardinals have done a really good job with
- 17:05Speaker 1: their young pitchers, right and that's the future of the
- 17:07Speaker 1: ball club because it starts with starting pitching. But if
- 17:11Speaker 1: you look at how Lahey has kind of come into
- 17:14Speaker 1: his own. Polantes an eleven game winner, he's come into
- 17:17Speaker 1: his own. And McGreevy, though he gets zero run support,
- 17:21Speaker 1: I mean he gets fifth worst in all of baseball,
- 17:24Speaker 1: has come into his.
- 17:25Speaker 3: Own for him.
- 17:25Speaker 1: He'll go six and a third give up four and
- 17:27Speaker 1: that's like a bad start for him.
- 17:30Speaker 3: Do you think the Cardinals don't.
- 17:32Speaker 1: Get enough credit for and Libby hopefully he comes around
- 17:35Speaker 1: right now he's in a bad way. But do you
- 17:37Speaker 1: think the Cardinals don't get enough credit for kind of
- 17:39Speaker 1: really handling these young pictures pretty well?
- 17:43Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 17:43Speaker 2: And then when you're like, here's the thing is when
- 17:45Speaker 2: you're not when none of them are quote unquote becoming aces,
- 17:50Speaker 2: you don't get their recognition that you deserve, if that
- 17:54Speaker 2: makes sense. So like Dussey and the coaching staff and
- 17:58Speaker 2: what they're coming up and what they're doing, how these
- 18:00Speaker 2: guys are evolving as big leaguers and using their stuff
- 18:04Speaker 2: and stuff like that, Yes, they should get a lot
- 18:05Speaker 2: of credit because if you look at each guy's projections
- 18:10Speaker 2: or ceilings and all that they're they're they're what three
- 18:14Speaker 2: four starters is what they're projected to be like at
- 18:18Speaker 2: their peak, and they're pitching the way they are, and
- 18:20Speaker 2: they're pitching they're pitching I guess better than anyone expected
- 18:26Speaker 2: them to do they expected them to So yes, that
- 18:29Speaker 2: is a coaching, but it's also them being able to
- 18:31Speaker 2: implement what they're good at, how they're like to do things,
- 18:33Speaker 2: and then being able to keep building on what they've got.
- 18:37Speaker 2: So yeah, they should get a little bit more credit
- 18:39Speaker 2: for what they're doing. And then they're also kind of
- 18:42Speaker 2: a lot of these guys are trying to show that
- 18:43Speaker 2: they can be a part of the pitching staff. And
- 18:47Speaker 2: if you have these guys become bonafide threes and everyone's
- 18:51Speaker 2: everyone wants a one or two, I get it. But
- 18:53Speaker 2: if they're bonafide threes, and then you can go get
- 18:56Speaker 2: your one or two on the market. Why these guys
- 18:58Speaker 2: are making very you know, small salaries and arbitration or
- 19:03Speaker 2: in or pre are that's how you that's how you
- 19:06Speaker 2: build winners. So this is huge for what they're doing.
- 19:09Speaker 2: They have guys that are becoming bona fide threes, and
- 19:13Speaker 2: then you can go out and get two ones on
- 19:15Speaker 2: the market, and then you've got threes making you know,
- 19:18Speaker 2: minimum or below market value, and then you can pay
- 19:21Speaker 2: those guys that touch more to be your ones and
- 19:23Speaker 2: now you become Hey, this is how we become a
- 19:27Speaker 2: super contender. So yeah, that's huge form and the coaching
- 19:30Speaker 2: staff and Dusty and those guys should definitely get a
- 19:33Speaker 2: lot of credit for that.
- 19:35Speaker 1: You know, mcgreev, you got a little run support, Like,
- 19:37Speaker 1: to me, there's a fine one. If you're one, it's
- 19:40Speaker 1: a different animal.
- 19:41Speaker 3: I get that. It's a fine line between two and threes, right, agreev.
- 19:45Speaker 2: With the run support, there's there's only there's only like
- 19:48Speaker 2: five ones in all of baseball, to be honest with you,
- 19:51Speaker 2: and then there's a bunch of twos and then your threes,
- 19:54Speaker 2: three and fours and then your five. So that's that's
- 19:58Speaker 2: way too beyond your brain power. I'll incorporate that later
- 20:03Speaker 2: in life.
- 20:05Speaker 3: All right.
- 20:05Speaker 1: But like mcgreevy's numbers, you have like a sub three
- 20:09Speaker 1: era and you have what four wins or something. He
- 20:13Speaker 1: gets like three point five runs for again fifth worst.
- 20:16Speaker 2: If you're he's got two games going against him, he's
- 20:18Speaker 2: either a bad teammate or he needs to start buying
- 20:21Speaker 2: more dinners. That's all I needed, That's all, And I
- 20:24Speaker 2: know he's not a bad teammate, So he needs to
- 20:25Speaker 2: start buying dinners and getting guys on his side.
- 20:29Speaker 1: If have you been through a season where you got
- 20:31Speaker 1: zero run support and might have had, you know, eighteen
- 20:34Speaker 1: nineteen wins, if someone hit a little bit for you,
- 20:38Speaker 1: and how do you handle that?
- 20:40Speaker 2: Yeah, you have I'm trying to think I was. I
- 20:43Speaker 2: was always known to be a great teammate, so people
- 20:45Speaker 2: score runs for me for the most part, But there
- 20:48Speaker 2: was times where you go through stretches where you'd have
- 20:51Speaker 2: like six or seven or to ten quality starts, and
- 20:54Speaker 2: next thing you know, you're like, man, I can't can't
- 20:58Speaker 2: buy a win. That comes with that comes with the
- 21:00Speaker 2: flow of things. You know, we could look up in
- 21:03Speaker 2: the second half, he can get all the best run
- 21:05Speaker 2: support in all of baseball. And then and then next
- 21:07Speaker 2: thing you know, he ends the season at twelve, and
- 21:10Speaker 2: you know, twelve and whatever he is, and he had
- 21:12Speaker 2: a great year, and you look back and it's like, oh, hey,
- 21:16Speaker 2: good job. And then it's a great year for him
- 21:18Speaker 2: as a first year in the big league. So comes
- 21:20Speaker 2: with the territory. You just have to weather it, not
- 21:22Speaker 2: bitch about it, because the more you bitch about it,
- 21:25Speaker 2: the more it happens, is what I've learned. The more
- 21:27Speaker 2: you put it out in the universe, the shittier that
- 21:29Speaker 2: you're going to get kicked in the sack. So just
- 21:31Speaker 2: just just just wear it, go on, don't say a word.
- 21:35Speaker 2: And that's that's whom Agrieve he is. I know he's
- 21:37Speaker 2: just he's gonna wear it and know that he's just
- 21:39Speaker 2: doing his job and that's what he's got to do.
- 21:41Speaker 2: And it will all what's happened, Jim at all.
- 21:44Speaker 1: It evens out now because I have a small brain
- 21:49Speaker 1: and everything you were saying, you know, I looked up
- 21:51Speaker 1: the definition in Webster's Old School Player and there's a
- 21:56Speaker 1: picture of Lance Lind there.
- 21:57Speaker 3: So I want to ask you our last till right,
- 22:00Speaker 3: et cetera.
- 22:02Speaker 1: Wins Some people say they have no value, and I
- 22:05Speaker 1: say they do not every season because to me, stature
- 22:09Speaker 1: just a piece of the puzzle. But there are pictures
- 22:12Speaker 1: that have more wins, and that tells me maybe they
- 22:14Speaker 1: know when they could ease up a little bit. They
- 22:18Speaker 1: know how to attack the lineup when they don't have
- 22:20Speaker 1: their best stuff. Is in your opinion, as mister old
- 22:25Speaker 1: School is wins a meaningless set.
- 22:29Speaker 3: No.
- 22:29Speaker 2: If we're if we're playing a win loss sport. How
- 22:33Speaker 2: is it a meaningless stat? It's the old thing. It's like, hey,
- 22:37Speaker 2: I don't I don't have to outrun the bear. I
- 22:39Speaker 2: just have to outrun the person next to me. So
- 22:42Speaker 2: when you're playing a game, you have to go at
- 22:45Speaker 2: least five plus innings and you have to come out
- 22:48Speaker 2: of the game with a lead. So yes, there comes
- 22:51Speaker 2: some strategory to that. There comes like it means something.
- 22:54Speaker 2: And if it doesn't mean anything at the end of
- 22:57Speaker 2: the year, why do we not just say, hey, we
- 23:00Speaker 2: just go play a bunch of games. We won't have
- 23:02Speaker 2: win loss. We'll just end the games after nine innings,
- 23:04Speaker 2: and then the team with the best win loss differential
- 23:08Speaker 2: or starting another or the was it run differential the
- 23:11Speaker 2: best run differential? The six best teams are the best
- 23:14Speaker 2: run differential. At the end of the year, they're in
- 23:17Speaker 2: the playoffs. But then then wins and the loss of
- 23:19Speaker 2: matter in the playoffs. So yes, wins matter because you
- 23:23Speaker 2: know what, if you win the game, you're a winner.
- 23:25Speaker 2: If you lose the game, you're a loser. No matter
- 23:27Speaker 2: how good or bad you did. You pitch shitty that day,
- 23:29Speaker 2: but you outlasted the other guy that pitched shitty, you're
- 23:32Speaker 2: a winner that day. And if you pitch really good
- 23:34Speaker 2: and you both give if you give up one run
- 23:36Speaker 2: and he gives up nine, then you're a loser that day,
- 23:38Speaker 2: and you didn't pitch good enough. And so yes, wins
- 23:40Speaker 2: do you matter?
- 23:42Speaker 3: Well stated, and you, sir, are constant to like Lance.
- 23:46Speaker 3: Thank you. I think you had a big show today.
- 23:48Speaker 1: That's gonna do it for this edition of Cardinal Terror
- 23:51Speaker 1: to We'll see you next time.
- 23:52Speaker 3: Hopefully that edition won't suck.
