Latest / Sports Card Clubhouse / Breaking News: SGC Is Increasing Turnaround Times- Surface Issues With Mike and Graig
Transcript
- 0:00In our massive country, there are card collectors throughout
- 0:04the land participating in the hobby.
- 0:07There's Mike of Junk Wax Hero and Greg of Midlife Cards, and
- 0:12while distance may separate them, here is where they come
- 0:15together to talk cards. Hey buddy, how's it going?
- 0:21You're back. I'm back, yes.
- 0:24I was in the Netherlands last week, which you know you had.
- 0:28Speaking D Deutsch, that's German.
- 0:33It's similar. They speak Dutch.
- 0:35Dutch I think is based on German or I, I don't know.
- 0:39I'm, I'm not very smart, Greg. Can I tell you something?
- 0:43I have some Dutch ancestry. OK, good.
- 0:50Story. That's the whole story.
- 0:51Yeah, pretty. Pretty good stuff.
- 0:55What did you think of David Chase's fill in for you is?
- 1:00Do you have any thoughts on that?
- 1:02Do you have any opinions or feelings or feedback for David?
- 1:06What was his name again? The David Chase.
- 1:11So I listened to it and I was in a little distress because my
- 1:19arch nemesis David Chase is after the same exact cards that
- 1:25I'm after. Iconic, low grade, high, I
- 1:30appeal cards. It's.
- 1:33Just the two of you that are into those, by the way.
- 1:38I am a huge David Chase fan and I think, you know, I we've
- 1:42mentioned this before, but I think it bears a little bit of a
- 1:46reminder that David Chase and I are buds.
- 1:49We get along great and this little back and forth, it's just
- 1:53for fun. We're not, We don't seriously
- 1:55dislike each other. But people always get caught up
- 1:58in in defending me or or insulting me.
- 2:03But I think David Chase is an up and coming star in the hobby,
- 2:09hobby content. He is funny, he has a ton of
- 2:14charisma, he's smart, he's knowledgeable.
- 2:20The He's got it all. Stukes said Best smile in
- 2:27YouTube. Best smile in YouTube?
- 2:30That's what Stukes said. David very proudly shared that
- 2:37with me. So you haven't heard Stuke
- 2:40saying that? Like you, he just claims that
- 2:43Stuke said that. That's a fairpoint.
- 2:44That's a fairpoint. David does say that you owe him
- 2:47an apology. Do you want to use this
- 2:48opportunity to do that? I would love to not bring give
- 2:53him an apology. There's no chance.
- 2:56There's no way I'm going to give him an apology.
- 2:58Oh, boy. OK, well, I definitely we have.
- 3:03Oh, there's other news. We got to talk.
- 3:05We got to at least talk about real quick the fact that the
- 3:09clubhouse just expanded dramatically.
- 3:13We went from a trio to a quadrio.
- 3:19There's four of us now, four of us with the addition of Jeremy
- 3:24Lee, which I'm. Thrilled about?
- 3:28Yeah, me too. Jeremy's amazing.
- 3:30I mean, he's no David Chase, but he discovered David Chase.
- 3:36Did you hear what Matt from Providence had to say about the
- 3:43acquisition of Jeremy Lee to the clubhouse?
- 3:47I have not heard. He said could you, I, I'm going
- 3:53to misquote him, but it's I'm paraphrasing here, so please I
- 3:57should have pulled the clip. But he said something along the
- 4:00lines of, could you imagine to sign up to be the second best
- 4:06bald guy on the channel? That's so that's something Matt
- 4:14from Providence would say. We have to I've got to clip that
- 4:19and I'm going to play it on every video now.
- 4:21That's that's perfect. I I appreciate Matt from
- 4:25Providence, even though he never texts me back.
- 4:28He just like thumbs up or hearts.
- 4:31My my texts. Like what?
- 4:33What is that? Matt, it sounds like he texts
- 4:35with everyone else based on their episodes.
- 4:38So I don't know, maybe he's busy being, you know, one of the top
- 4:4435 dealers in New England, so. Yeah, cards.
- 4:50In the cards in the Midwest are are popular.
- 4:54Isn't that where New England is? Yes, same thing.
- 4:58Big Matt from Providence fan, big Jeremy Lee fan.
- 5:02Thrilled to add Jeremy Lee to our stable.
- 5:05Do we have a stable? Becoming a stable.
- 5:08We just added Secretariat, so it's becoming a stable for sure.
- 5:15Yeah, I mean, I'm, I'm really happy about it.
- 5:19We have a few topics. There's a a few places we could
- 5:22go today with, with some of the things that are happening.
- 5:28And, and I guess where I think I want to start.
- 5:31This is a friend of mine in the hobby who I've met through the
- 5:35channel, who I'm not going to use his name because I didn't, I
- 5:39didn't ask him if I could use his name.
- 5:42And he's not like a public persona per SE, but he has
- 5:48several submissions out right now at SGC and you know, the
- 5:54turn around time. What are they saying like 50
- 5:56days or something? I think it was 40 to 50 business
- 5:59days. So it's past that and it's past
- 6:03the 40 to 50 days. Well past that, right?
- 6:07Well past that. And he emailed them, he emailed
- 6:12customer support and he said what what's the deal?
- 6:16Because it's it's past the 40 to 50 days.
- 6:20Yeah, it's at about 60 business days.
- 6:23I think this is a really interesting response that he
- 6:28got. So I did white out his name just
- 6:33again because I didn't ask, but Alejandro Marquez is the guy
- 6:38from SCC support that responded and I'm going to read the e-mail
- 6:42which is currently viewed on the screen.
- 6:44Again, I clipped it. It's on the screen and I want to
- 6:49read it for the people who can't read it for themselves because
- 6:51they're listening. It says hello.
- 6:53Due to the current volume of submissions that our team is
- 6:57processing, we have made the decision to increase our turn
- 7:01around times to accurately reflect the current processing
- 7:05speeds that SGC is operating under.
- 7:08Please note that this change and delays are not exclusive to SGC.
- 7:13A majority of the grading services are experiencing the
- 7:17same delays due to higher than normal volume of submissions
- 7:22being sent and have made similar decisions to increase the turn
- 7:27around times and service fees and service fees.
- 7:31Regards. Now this is dated May 21st and
- 7:37today is May 22nd. Now give me your immediate
- 7:43takeaways when you see this because my buddy sent this he he
- 7:47told me about it yesterday and then this morning I mentioned it
- 7:51to you. I got a hold of the e-mail and
- 7:55so we haven't really talked about it, but you're aware of
- 7:58it. What is your take away?
- 8:00Cause what is your take away? Yeah, first of all, we should
- 8:03say please don't go emailing Alejandro.
- 8:05This is not his fault. Don't, don't harass him via
- 8:09e-mail. It's shocking to me that they,
- 8:14well, I guess it shouldn't. It's shocking, but not
- 8:16surprising, if that makes sense. But they've gone from 5 to 10
- 8:19business days to well, we're going to do what I think it was
- 8:23at 1.20 to 30 and then it was 40 to 50 and now we're talking
- 8:27about 60 ish business days and it's still not ready, right?
- 8:33Doesn't it say here? No, so he, there was another,
- 8:40there was he, he was under the impression that they were going
- 8:44to be grading it this week. I think he responded to this and
- 8:48then in that response, which I didn't clip, it said your, your
- 8:54order should be graded in the next like week.
- 8:57And it's been there like since, I don't know, like February or
- 9:02January or something. Yeah, it's, I mean this is
- 9:07breaking news we should point out because we, I don't think
- 9:10this has been announced anywhere else.
- 9:12Nobody else has has this information that SGC is
- 9:16increasing their turn around times.
- 9:19And, and so we've, we've kind of reversed the spin of the Earth
- 9:26here. By I mean.
- 9:29Putting this on putting our show on Saturday so we could break
- 9:32this news and then this week in sports cards with Chris Sewell
- 9:35post on Tuesday here on sports car clubhouse.
- 9:38But this is, in my opinion, it's pretty big news.
- 9:42It's. I, It's big enough news that we
- 9:47felt like it was important enough to post surface issues on
- 9:51Saturday instead of Tuesday. And this week in sports cards
- 9:55instead of being Saturday will now be Tuesday.
- 9:58We flip those because I think this is a really big deal.
- 10:02I think the fact that SGC was A always the cheapest, B always
- 10:09the fastest and, and now basically if anything it it
- 10:14feels like if anything happens at PSA, then they have to have
- 10:21SGC mirror it. If, if PSA increases times, then
- 10:27SGC has to do it too because we don't want to make PSA look bad.
- 10:31That's how it feels to me now. I do think they're overwhelmed.
- 10:36I do think that they're behind, but they were used to be grading
- 10:42like twice as many cards in five to 10 days.
- 10:46Then now they are grading in 60-70.
- 10:53That, I don't know. They haven't made an official
- 10:55announcement yet, but it sounds like they're going to.
- 10:59So how do you go from 5 to 10 days grading twice as many?
- 11:05Well, the answer, Greg, is that you poach all of the graders and
- 11:12you have them change out their black and white polo and put on
- 11:17a red, white and blue polo and you have them go to the office
- 11:22with air conditioning down the hall.
- 11:28And the free coffee. Free coffee.
- 11:32I mean, I don't even get free coffee and I work for the
- 11:35government. Because you work for the
- 11:38government. Oh, is that why?
- 11:40Yeah, yeah, It, it's so disappointing, Greg.
- 11:46And it's there are so many people, you, you included, I
- 11:50think, who are still sending their cards to SGC hoping that
- 11:54you'll get the old result when you know you're going to get the
- 11:59new result. I, I have an order there right
- 12:03now. I mean, I send in an order.
- 12:05I, I don't even think I've mentioned this.
- 12:07I sent in an order like a couple of weeks ago.
- 12:13No, it was more than that. It was probably 3 weeks ago
- 12:15because when I tracked it, it was like a week and 1/2 from the
- 12:19time that they picked it up at the post office to the time that
- 12:23it said received. So they're playing that, that
- 12:27game too. But, but a lot of us still like
- 12:32the way cards, especially vintage cards, look in those
- 12:35holders and we still like the way that they grade.
- 12:41And I mean, you know, our buddy Matt from Providence, he just
- 12:46had a big order come back and, and a lot of people are still
- 12:50sending them out. I guess my question is, you
- 12:53know, PSA just announced they're going to hire like 1000 people
- 12:58and they're investing $200 million.
- 13:01And then I heard you, by the way, I mean, I, I just breezed
- 13:06over this, but I heard you on Collector Investor podcast the
- 13:12other day filling in on there and they said, and, and this is
- 13:17what I heard Jeremy say actually, as, as I kind of
- 13:20change my tone a little bit here.
- 13:23I heard Jeremy say that when they had needed a sub, you were
- 13:30their first call. It was an easy decision.
- 13:32And I, I mean, I felt, I felt like this sharp pain in my chest
- 13:38and in my back at the same time. I was like, what is happening?
- 13:41Am I having a heart attack? That it was an easy call.
- 13:46He's just being nice. Theo reached out to me and and
- 13:50he said. Oh, it's Theo's fault?
- 13:52No. No, Theo said that you were the
- 13:55first choice, but they record during the day I'm.
- 13:59Getting the pain again. It's coming back.
- 14:01They record during the day. Oh.
- 14:05Yeah, OK. And I will say this, you were
- 14:10filling in. Tell us, Mike, who were you
- 14:14filling in for? And tell us about this this
- 14:16gentleman. Mr. Christopher Sewell, the
- 14:20third, no, I don't know if he's the third collector, investor,
- 14:23dealer, in that order, who is the sponsor of this, this show
- 14:27surface issues, our favorite dealer globally, Global Sewell
- 14:33Sports Cards is now a massive company.
- 14:36He's he's, he's hired 4 people. In fact, when, when I was
- 14:41recording an episode with him, he mentioned at one point having
- 14:44the dual garage at one point. And I meant to mention to him
- 14:48that, that he looked better when he had clones and I forgot.
- 14:52It's a shame. If you're interested in selling
- 14:55part or all of your collection, reach out to
- 14:57chrissewellsportscards@gmail.com. He will provide you with the
- 15:01best, the fairest, most transparent offer you can get.
- 15:07No guarantees. For me.
- 15:08I, I don't know. I mean, he's, in my opinion,
- 15:11he's the best, but that's very subjective.
- 15:13And he's a great guy who you can trust.
- 15:15And in my humble opinion, the most important thing when you're
- 15:19dealing with something like making purchases or making sales
- 15:24with cards, it's really important to trust people
- 15:27because there are a lot of untrustworthy people out there.
- 15:30And Chris is somebody that I do deeply trust.
- 15:34So check out Chris if you're interested in selling.
- 15:38He's looking to buy collections. So back to SGCI.
- 15:42Mean, I don't, I mean, again, I know people are like guys, when
- 15:49you going to wake up like they're pulling the, I heard
- 15:51somebody say that in, in my episode, which we could talk
- 15:54about that too in a second. I, I had an episode post today.
- 15:56We're recording this on Friday afternoon and somebody said you
- 16:01don't get it. They're slowly pulling the plug
- 16:03on SGC and I'm like, I'm like, that might be my line.
- 16:08Like I, I, I mean, I agree like they are when you spend 200
- 16:15million on PSA and you are hiring 1000 people.
- 16:22And like you were talking about with Jeremy Johnson, the Texas
- 16:26snowman on Collector Investor podcast, you were like, yeah, if
- 16:30you do the math, they've only got like two or three graders,
- 16:34but PSA is going to add 1000 employees.
- 16:38You obviously don't care about SGC.
- 16:43Now that literally that hearing you and Jeremy have that
- 16:49conversation spurred my video that posted today, Friday, May
- 16:5622nd. And I know at one point you
- 16:58said, well, we should kind of touch on that too, which was,
- 17:03yeah, you're right. Like if they've got like two or
- 17:05three graders, if their turn around times have gone from 5 to
- 17:0810 days to apparently now 607080, who knows?
- 17:13If they've got no money being invested, but they're investing
- 17:1810s or hundreds of millions into PSA, Does that mean that maybe
- 17:23people are going to start to only buy PSA and start to go,
- 17:27wait a second, maybe I shouldn't buy SGC?
- 17:29Which led to my episode that I did today.
- 17:34And it was basically that question, what's happening with
- 17:40SGC? Are they nearing the end?
- 17:43And I pulled some data. Let me let me throw a
- 17:48hypothetical at you and see what you think about this.
- 17:50Let's pretend for a moment that SGC has three graders.
- 17:53We don't really know, but I think it's somewhere between
- 17:542:00 and 4:00. They have 3 graders.
- 17:57Imagine if a cold went through the office.
- 17:59This is exactly my my question. Let's say one of them gets sick
- 18:04and can't go into the office and work.
- 18:06Are they pulling a grader off of PSA to make up for that?
- 18:11Or do they just say we'll grade a little bit slower at SGCI?
- 18:14Guarantee you it's the latter. I don't think they're pulling
- 18:18any resources from PSA to SGC, but I think that they might be
- 18:24pulling resources from SGC for PSA.
- 18:27Well, I mean, at the National last year, like I think it was
- 18:32me and Tony Southern collector were like, so like, are you guys
- 18:36going at PSA like, and, and they were like the, the, the employee
- 18:40was very open and honest and said they basically told us if
- 18:45you want to work for PSA, you can now work for PSA.
- 18:47If you want to stay with SGC, you can stay with SGC.
- 18:50And we're like, well, how many people said we'll go to PSA and
- 18:53they're like, I don't know, like 60 or 70%, We're like, whoa,
- 18:58whoa. But this is not new news, right?
- 19:04It's not new news. No.
- 19:08Were you surprised and by the fact that SGC values seem to be
- 19:18at the very least holding on, or is that just is that more a
- 19:23result of rising card prices and SGC maybe being the value
- 19:27option? We should, we should specify
- 19:30though, that you're talking about iconic vintage cards, not
- 19:34modern. Like I talked to Chris Sewell
- 19:36about this and he said ultra modern and modern have plummeted
- 19:41in value in SGC holders, which we would expect.
- 19:45I am, I'm not that surprised because I think that they almost
- 19:53became kind of a bargain SGC slabs because we still believe,
- 19:57we still trust that the cards are authentic, right?
- 20:01And you're looking at like fours roughly mid grade and it kind of
- 20:08got to a point where. The SGC vintage slabs were had
- 20:13become kind of a bargain and then people started buying them
- 20:16up. I I just bought an SGC slab of a
- 20:20pre war card 19th century. As a matter of fact, my first
- 20:23one coming in a video in the next couple weeks.
- 20:29And so it makes sense for them to kind of not catch up with
- 20:35PSA, but slow down the the gap. I, I think when PSA stuff is
- 20:45going up so fast and, and I shouldn't even say PSA stuff
- 20:51when cards in PSA holders are going up, it feels like like
- 21:00you're saying that if, if other holders aren't going up equally
- 21:08or close to equally, then they become massive bargains and then
- 21:13you go, well, is it a crack and resubmit?
- 21:15Like I was just watching a, a video a couple of days ago where
- 21:20some guy was like cracking stuff out of Beckett slabs and trying
- 21:23to cross it to PSA because of how much more value they would
- 21:27be. But then like Theo did that
- 21:30video the other day, I think from the Four Collectors
- 21:32channel, and he was talking to Howard Chasser and Howard was
- 21:36like, I have no interest in vintage cards in Beckett slabs.
- 21:42And it's like, well, what do you mean by that's a great question.
- 21:48Why would you? Because maybe there's a
- 21:51beautiful card in that holder. OK but it looks like it looks
- 21:59like SGC slabs look terrible on an ultra modern card.
- 22:05I agree with that. Same thing with Beckett.
- 22:08I would crack it out of a Beckett slab.
- 22:09I would be happy to buy a card in a in a old Beckett BVG slab
- 22:15at the BVG discount and I would just crack it up.
- 22:21OK, but so so you crack it out, let's just let's walk through
- 22:27that. Let's let's just let's play
- 22:29through this so you get a card. Let's just hypothetically a 56
- 22:34tops Jackie Robinson in a B VG3 and you go, I love the card, but
- 22:41it's in a Beckett slap. I'm going to crack it out and
- 22:44I'm going to put it in semi rigid or whatever.
- 22:48OK, well, but but are you ever going to get it regraded or you
- 22:55just going to leave it in in the the raw state permanently or
- 23:00what would you do next? If I were to grade it, it would
- 23:04it definitely wouldn't put it in a semi rigid.
- 23:06I can't stand semi rigids. I put it in a one touch but I
- 23:10would probably send it off to CGC to be graded.
- 23:13If it's staying in my collection, I'd send it to CGC.
- 23:18OK, So what if? What do you worry at all about a
- 23:22card of some expense going from a holder to raw to a grading
- 23:30company and coming back as altered?
- 23:35What do you think that BBG missed the alteration?
- 23:40Well, I've just heard of many times where when people have
- 23:43tried to crack and and switch that it gets flagged as men's
- 23:49size or evidence of or authentic altered.
- 23:54Doesn't mean that it was doesn't mean it was missed.
- 23:58Maybe it was missed but but I. Love the card, right?
- 24:03Yeah, Yep. So if I, let's say, let's say
- 24:09PSA, three of the 56 tops Jackie Robinson, I don't know what that
- 24:13sells for. Let's say $800.
- 24:16You're making that up based on what I know about the 56 tops.
- 24:20I have a 56 tops Jackie up on my wall right now.
- 24:24Let's say it's $800 in a B VG3. What is it, 5?
- 24:30Maybe $600? Let's just go with that.
- 24:34OK. And I like the card.
- 24:38It looks, it's perfectly fits what I'm looking for in a 56
- 24:42tops. Jackie I can't I don't know, I
- 24:48just can't be bothered by if it so if it's the same exact card,
- 24:55CGC says this is altered I. Don't really want flushing money
- 25:05away. Like to me, if, and this is I
- 25:08think that this is evolving into a a completely separate
- 25:13conversation, but is a very interesting conversation, which
- 25:16is if you have a card that you like, you like the card, but
- 25:22it's in a holder that you don't like, maybe you like the
- 25:27uniformity of SGC. You know, John 3D 80s kid loves
- 25:32SGC. Everything is uniform from an
- 25:34SGC. So he buys a card in a in a
- 25:37Beckett slab, ABVG slab, and he says I'm going to cross it.
- 25:42Isn't there risk in cracking it and sending it to SGC?
- 25:47And I mean, and there's a lot of risks.
- 25:49There's the risks of putting it in the mail.
- 25:51There's the risk of it maybe getting a bad grade, which you
- 25:54don't care about the bad grade because you love the card.
- 25:56That's fine. There's the risk of it going
- 25:59well, no, we think it's trimmed. We think that there's color
- 26:03added. We think that there's XYZ issue.
- 26:07I think cracking, anytime you crack and you resubmit to
- 26:14anyone, even if it's the same company, you are taking a risk
- 26:18that that card will get deemed some other thing.
- 26:24Isn't that? Isn't that part of the equation
- 26:27that you have to consider when you're doing that process?
- 26:31Absolutely, yeah. But do you probably I'm I'm
- 26:37unlikely to buy a BVG slab just because I don't think.
- 26:41But you love the card. But you love the card.
- 26:44But I I don't think they have a good reputation.
- 26:46So does it look amazing because it's trimmed or it's had color
- 26:52added? I think with BBG you just don't
- 26:55really know. I.
- 26:56Think that's really important what you just said that you,
- 27:01you're, you know, all of the data and, and anecdotal evidence
- 27:06and conversations use currently sit in a state where you are
- 27:12unsure of the competencies or validities or the of of a BVG
- 27:21graded card. And isn't isn't that potentially
- 27:27part of the reason that cards in those holders sell for less
- 27:31because there are enough people who don't trust it?
- 27:37Sure, but why does CGC slabs sell for less?
- 27:41Everybody knows that CGC is a good grading company, Reliable,
- 27:46trustworthy. They get it right.
- 27:49Do they? They they make mistakes just
- 27:52like any company, but seems to me like there's fewer of them.
- 27:57I. Mean we.
- 27:59Open questions about a George Sherm T2O6 card.
- 28:02But slabs look amazing, unlike BVG slabs.
- 28:08I think that we all have opinions and baggage that we
- 28:13bring to the table. I'll be honest with you, if I go
- 28:15up to a vintage dealer and there's a card in a Beckett slab
- 28:22and there's a card in a CGC slab, I don't think I'm
- 28:28interested if it's a very expensive card.
- 28:31Now, that doesn't mean either one of them isn't fantastic.
- 28:37And that also doesn't mean that if it's in APSA, because I know
- 28:40that this is what I know there are people that are just furious
- 28:45right now because they're saying, oh, so you don't think
- 28:48cards in SGC or PSA holders are trimmed and colored, added and
- 28:53and altered? Of course there are.
- 28:56Of course they're absolutely are.
- 28:59But if for whatever reason it's universally accepted that if
- 29:07it's in APSA holder, everybody just goes well, must be legit.
- 29:14But if they say it's in a BVG holder, it it's probably legit
- 29:22that that is the delta in the value of the price.
- 29:27And I don't know how PSA was able to create that difference
- 29:34in doubt. The doubt difference is less in
- 29:38PSA. And that's why when you watch a
- 29:40video like what Teapot did, where Teapot was, you know,
- 29:47cracking the same card and send in to all the companies in the
- 29:50grades were just absolutely all over the place, sometimes
- 29:53altered, sometimes eights or nines or fours and fives.
- 29:58That that is the kind of thing that has the potential to be a
- 30:05major disruptor to the whole concept of grading.
- 30:09And the guys like John Mangini who've been seeing for a while,
- 30:13this is this whole thing, you guys is a racket.
- 30:17It is like hard to argue, right? I don't know.
- 30:25I don't I don't know. I mean, you know, I've shared my
- 30:30opinion on all of it many times. I guess the way I look at it is
- 30:35if I buy a card in an SGC holder, that's probably its
- 30:39final resting place, and if I buy a card in an PSA holder,
- 30:43it's probably its final resting place because of my level of
- 30:49trust is high enough. The presentation of those two
- 30:53slabs for me is high enough. I think CGC looks better for
- 31:00modern stuff than vintage stuff, personally, so it wouldn't be
- 31:06the final resting place for me. Therefore, I'm just not going to
- 31:10really go down that road because I'm going to have to crack it or
- 31:15I'm going to have to try to cross it over, and there's a
- 31:18level of risk to that. So I just rather not participate
- 31:22there. Even if I love the card and the
- 31:25card isn't messed with, it's never leaving the slab for me if
- 31:31it's in APSA or an SGC holder. And yeah.
- 31:35So yeah. Isn't there a bit of a market
- 31:37inefficiency though where if a card goes for $1000 in APSA 5
- 31:44let's say, and you see an SGC card that looks like it would be
- 31:49APSA 5, like there is a like a 80% chance you're going to get a
- 31:535 or even better and that card sells for $700.00.
- 31:58Isn't there a little bit of a market inefficiency there that
- 32:00you could exploit by buying the SGC card and crossing it over to
- 32:06APSA slab and now you have $1000 card or maybe even more that you
- 32:11bought for 700 bucks? And isn't it possible that the
- 32:15opposite is true? Because I'll tell you right now,
- 32:19something that my dad has done several times, because my dad
- 32:22prefers SGC slabs, he, oh, he prefers the look of the SGC
- 32:26slab. So what he was doing for a
- 32:29couple of years is he was buying some of these cards and PSA
- 32:33fours that just look amazing. And I did a couple of videos on
- 32:38this and showed some of the examples like it's like APSA
- 32:42four that looks amazing. He cracked it and submitted it
- 32:44to SGC and get like a 7 and it now it's in a 7.
- 32:49So yes, there's an inefficiency. The direction of this card is
- 32:55selling for less in an SGC holder.
- 32:58So if you can get it in APSA holder with the same grade then
- 33:02it adds value and but vice versa of the undergraded card in PSA
- 33:09going to SGC getting a potentially a higher grade.
- 33:12But the the reason that that game is basically on life
- 33:19support is because of the turn around Times Now if it takes 120
- 33:27or 50, how many days is it for PSA now?
- 33:30140 to 160 business days, that's seven or eight months my.
- 33:34Gosh, it is May. And that's only climbing.
- 33:39By the way. Do you think that these thousand
- 33:41people they're hiring are going to be up and running in the next
- 33:436 months? Probably not.
- 33:45That 140 to 160 could be 180 to 200 within the next three
- 33:50months. I mean, you're probably getting
- 33:53the card. If you submit a card today to
- 33:55PSA, you're probably getting it back in 2027, right?
- 34:00Is insane. When I submitted So I submitted
- 34:05some cards to SGC in December. At the time the turn around time
- 34:10was 15 to 20 days. But while it was in their
- 34:14possession, they changed it to this like whatever 40 days.
- 34:19They they decided why after by the way, after they received my
- 34:23money and it was advertised as 15 to 20 days, they turned it
- 34:29into 40 or whatever. And they took every bit of the
- 34:3240 ish days. OK, let me just play it.
- 34:36Let me put on a tinfoil hat for a second and let me ask you
- 34:40something. Do you think it's possible that
- 34:44SGC could be grading more cards faster and they are simply
- 34:51grading them slower because a they already have their money
- 34:56and B if they grade too fast it might pull people away from PSA
- 35:03because they need the card back quick.
- 35:06Do you think that that's possible, or do you think that
- 35:08they're truly at Max efficiency? Oh they're definitely not a Max
- 35:14efficiency. They can pull one person over
- 35:16and gain 30% efficiency. I think it's possible what
- 35:22you're proposing there, but I think it's unlikely.
- 35:25I, I don't think a slight improvement at SGC would make
- 35:29any dent whatsoever in PS as numbers.
- 35:33I mean, I think for a while I thought PSA might be hoping to
- 35:38reduce their demand, so I I don't see any.
- 35:44So you don't think they say don't grade too fast graders.
- 35:49You think they're like you don't think, and I mean, I mean deads.
- 35:53I'm just, I'm just throwing out a hypothetical.
- 35:56You don't think it's possible that that SGC is purposefully
- 36:01grading slowly? Do you?
- 36:03So let me throw this back at you.
- 36:05So they've got guys making 25 bucks an hour at PSA to grade X
- 36:10number of cards a day and they're making 25 bucks an hour
- 36:13at SGC. And you think that they'd be OK
- 36:15with them grading 75% of that number just because?
- 36:20Just saying, just slow it down a little bit.
- 36:22Or is it more likely that they have bled SGC drive by pulling
- 36:25graders away and being OK when one grader is out sick for a few
- 36:29days? Well, let me just be clear that
- 36:31I'm not saying that this is what's happening.
- 36:35What I am simply throwing out to chew on is, is it possible that
- 36:40that's happening? But with that said, let me give
- 36:43you an example. I know somebody who worked for
- 36:48the state, OK, and they were doing so much work so quickly.
- 36:55Their supervisor said, bro, you need to slow down because if you
- 37:01do too much work, they're not going to need as many of us and
- 37:06they're going to have to cut back.
- 37:08So what you need to do is your Max capacity needs to go down so
- 37:15that we all can keep our jobs because you're doing too much
- 37:19work and they're going to go. We don't need 5 people, we just
- 37:22need 2 good people. Like this is what the dude was
- 37:26told. So is that now again private
- 37:30company I? Said it's.
- 37:31I said it's very possible. Private company versus
- 37:35government is different. I think that's one really,
- 37:39really bad manager. Is it?
- 37:42Because if, if I were that person's manager, I would be
- 37:49hammering on the other four people saying, hey, we need to
- 37:52increase. Our work.
- 37:54You you you. You sound like a private sector
- 37:56guy. I am.
- 37:58I've been private sector my whole adult life.
- 38:00I know I, I agree with you. I don't think that they're doing
- 38:04it. I, I do think in all seriousness
- 38:07that they have pulled as many resources as possible to their
- 38:15cash cow where the profit margin is higher and, and they've left
- 38:22SGC with just enough scraps to survive, but nothing more.
- 38:29And, and that's, that's, that's the issue.
- 38:34I, I think if five people showed up at SGC today to get a job as
- 38:39a grader, they would say was you didn't, you didn't stop by the
- 38:44office next door at PSA first because like go there and if
- 38:48they're not interested, then come back.
- 38:50That's how it that's what I think is probably actually
- 38:53happening. But I think SGC would say,
- 38:55sorry, we're not hiring. Really, you'd think if I went,
- 39:00you think I would. I go down to Boca Raton.
- 39:02Gosh, I wish I lived in somebody down there.
- 39:05I'm being dead serious. Somebody go down there who lives
- 39:09in that area of Florida. I don't even know where Boca
- 39:11Raton is. I just know it's in Florida.
- 39:13You go to the SGC office and go in there and say, are you
- 39:18accepting applications? Are you hiring?
- 39:20I would love, I would love to hear that.
- 39:24I will say, this is it indeed. Is that one of the hiring
- 39:28things? I Googled and you're Googling it
- 39:30right now. I can see your eyes.
- 39:33I was looking to see if they were hiring and I couldn't find
- 39:37anything that SGC. I even asked AI is SGC hiring
- 39:41and. Why would they be?
- 39:44Why no? Fun fact.
- 39:45Why? Why wouldn't?
- 39:47They be Why would why wouldn't a private business be hiring right
- 39:52now if they are so far behind that they are extending out
- 39:57their service time? Because they're bleeding them
- 40:00dry. Right.
- 40:03Fun fact, Boca Raton. Correct?
- 40:05Correct. Mike Petty ISM Boca Raton means
- 40:11mouse mouth in English. Well, I got the Boca part.
- 40:16Oh, Raton. That makes sense.
- 40:18Rat is Raton and Boca is mouth. Yeah, I that.
- 40:23I love that. Thank you.
- 40:25Yeah, fun fact. Hey, I know we're up against it
- 40:28here, but I wanted to just say two or three weeks ago on this
- 40:31this very podcast, I mentioned that I had never had a pastrami
- 40:34sandwich. Oh yes.
- 40:37Our friends channel friends at Auction Wire mailed me.
- 40:42I know they mailed you one too, but you've had a pastrami
- 40:44sandwich, a pastrami sandwich kit from Gold Belly Deli, which
- 40:49is I guess in New York City. And I, I dove right in.
- 40:53I mean, I, I'm not one to be like, oh, I've never had one
- 40:57before. So I'm not going to try it.
- 40:59And it's not just one sandwich, Greg, I've had four pastrami
- 41:03sandwiches and they are spectacular.
- 41:06They are out of this world comes with rye bread, pastrami, a big,
- 41:11big thing of pastrami. You got to supply your own
- 41:15cheese. So I've, I've got provolone
- 41:17cheese. It came with some spicy mustard.
- 41:24What kind of mustard is it? It's like the spicy brown that
- 41:28they have at the at the like the baseball games and stuff.
- 41:32And Russian dressing. And man, it is I'm I'm looking
- 41:37forward to lunch tomorrow. I'm having another one.
- 41:40Are you? I got to say, it was a delicious
- 41:44sandwich, but it was a thoughtful gift.
- 41:48I mean, Mark is a really nice guy and they're great guys over
- 41:53there. But yeah, I mean, that.
- 41:56How cool was that? I didn't even know what was in
- 41:58the mail. I literally was like, what did
- 42:00my wife buy this time? And then come to find out what
- 42:05it was is our buddy Mark sending us a sandwich?
- 42:09That was a delicious pastrami sandwich and I guess now would
- 42:14be a good time to also share with everybody.
- 42:17There is a sports card clubhouse promo code.
- 42:22If you've not used auction wire, check out auction wire promo
- 42:27code SCC and you could use auction wire for free for 60
- 42:33days. And again the way I kind of
- 42:35liking it too. If you were looking for a hotel
- 42:41in, say, Chicago for the National, you might go to
- 42:45Expedia and you type in the area and you type in what you're
- 42:50looking for and maybe some filters in there and then it
- 42:53gives you some good options. It's basically like Expedia for
- 42:57cards that covers not just auction houses, but now it's
- 43:05starting to cover some private dealers as well, so.
- 43:09Also they do tickets event tickets too.
- 43:13So auction wire good guys. And yes, I agree, the pastrami
- 43:18sandwich was chef's kiss. Lucy had one as well.
- 43:24She very much enjoyed it. The rest of it I ate.
- 43:27So Lucy got one, I ate the rest. You've eaten all of it.
- 43:32It's gone, dude. It's.
- 43:34Gone, man, I've got one more, I think.
- 43:37Well when I do it I I go heavy on the pastrami, I pack it in
- 43:41there. So I probably got like 3 1/2
- 43:44loaded sandwiches. Oh yeah, I don't, I don't load
- 43:47them up. Yeah, I'm trying to delay my
- 43:51first heart attack as much as I can.
- 43:54I'm trying to expedite it. All right.
- 43:59Well, another one in the books. Fantastic conversation with you.
- 44:05I mean everything from David Chase to breaking news to
- 44:12auction wire sandwiches. Can I say it?
- 44:16Can I say it? Yeah.
- 44:18We've fixed all the world's problems.
- 44:21I mean, somebody's got to do it, bud.
- 44:24And we don't wear capes. We we don't fly through the air
- 44:30tights, tights occasionally, only on anniversary days.
- 44:39All right, dude, I'm happy to have you back.
- 44:41David Chase, you are a superstar for trying to fill the chair.
- 44:48And I know, like you said, a lot of love between you and David
- 44:52Chase. So those of you out there that
- 44:54think otherwise, that is not the that is not the case.
- 45:00All right. Final thoughts, Anything else or
- 45:03is that plug pulled here? Pull the plug sort of like pull
- 45:09the plug. Sort of like Collectors is doing
- 45:13to SGC.
