- 0:23None hamster with a blunt penknife
- 0:35for. Doing quicker, quicker.
- 0:39Quicker. Welcome back to a hamster with a
- 0:41blunt penknife, a Doctor Who commentary podcast and we're
- 0:44live on the Internet for everybody to see.
- 0:47Isn't this exciting? We've started bang on time.
- 0:50There's been no technical difficulties here.
- 0:52We are ready to go. How are you doing tonight?
- 0:58I'm pretty good so just to warn everybody, I've had a bit of a
- 1:01cold this week so I may mute to have a coughing fit at certain
- 1:05points, especially if I laugh too much.
- 1:07That's what fires up the cough, but it should be fine.
- 1:09I'm in need of some cybernetic lungs to improve me.
- 1:14You will be like us, all right. I don't want.
- 1:17To but the more you podcast for me, you are starting to sound a
- 1:20bit like me. You know a filthy gear, Dylan,
- 1:24what are we here to talk about today?
- 1:26We're here to talk about The 10th Planet, the final story
- 1:30starring the 1st Doctor Who played by William Hartnell.
- 1:35And this is an interesting choice because when you first
- 1:37said it, I think I had exactly the same reaction as Luke
- 1:40Malloy. Why the fuck has he chosen that
- 1:42story? I know it's a biggie, but I
- 1:46don't think it's one people talk about very much.
- 1:48It is a biggie and it was one that people used to talk about
- 1:51all the time when it wasn't available on VHS and DVD as this
- 1:56sort of mythical story with an amazing final part that you know
- 2:00is sadly missing from the archives.
- 2:02And then people actually saw it and I think they went, oh, this
- 2:06is a bit ropey, but there's still lots to enjoy.
- 2:10And it's a legendary story, as you say.
- 2:12And I just, I've got a lot of time for the 10th planet, even
- 2:15though it is imperfect. I want to say to you that I went
- 2:20into this with no hopes whatsoever.
- 2:22I watched this last weekend and I was basically live tweeting
- 2:26you whilst I was watching it and I was going this is fucking
- 2:30amazing. Like this is, this is the
- 2:32blueprint of Doctor Who. Before it was a blueprint.
- 2:35Absolutely. Like is this the first base
- 2:37under siege story? I think it probably is.
- 2:40I, I don't know whether, but maybe bits of the Ark, I don't
- 2:44know, but I feel like this feels like the first.
- 2:46It feels like the first Trouton story, which I know it's weird
- 2:48because it's the last Arsenal, but it feels like it's set in
- 2:51the blueprint, as you say, for future Doctor Who.
- 2:53Isn't the Ark more security kitchen on the?
- 2:56Siege. Yes, exactly.
- 2:58That's exactly what it is. On planet on the siege.
- 3:02But this this is based this sets the template for what's to come,
- 3:05doesn't it? The moon base the entirety of
- 3:07season 5. Yeah.
- 3:08Well, I mean, the moon base comes along and basically does
- 3:10this story a bit less, a bit better in a in about four weeks
- 3:13time or something like that. Well, well, that is to be
- 3:17decided as we go through this. Can anybody who cares to jump in
- 3:22with questions or comments please do so as we go along?
- 3:26We'll be grateful for them. Absolutely.
- 3:29Well look, should we jump straight into episode one then?
- 3:31Let's do it. Can we do it?
- 3:33Are you lined up? I am always lined up with you.
- 3:38Let's go in. Everybody in 54321.
- 3:45Off we go. I'm not going to ask what's
- 3:49Nathan said. It's a bit better for a bit less
- 3:52weird, which is sad. Are we talking about, based on
- 3:55the sea stories, that the moon base isn't quite as wit?
- 3:57Will they? Yeah.
- 3:58I would agree. I would agree.
- 3:59It's yeah, the moon base is a bit more Trags, Doctor Who.
- 4:03This sort of takes more risks, I think, and it's more interesting
- 4:08design choices. You know, the Cybermen lose
- 4:10something after the this initial design just because we are live.
- 4:14My episode one started about 10 seconds after everybody else's.
- 4:18So I'm going. So there's going to be a lag
- 4:20plus a lag. So we'll try not to get to
- 4:23seeing specific. Now we start off with some stock
- 4:25footage. And from what I understand,
- 4:27there's a fair amount of stock footage in this episode and
- 4:29nobody knows where it's from. They can't identify the source.
- 4:34Really. I was watching the production
- 4:38subtitles earlier and they detailed there where it was
- 4:40from. No, I don't think they do.
- 4:42I think on this production subtitles they say they don't
- 4:44know where the source is, or maybe that's later down the
- 4:46line. If anybody knows where the from
- 4:50that we open from here, please let us know.
- 4:52We'd like to do a commentary on the full program that that stock
- 4:55footage is from. What do you think about these
- 4:58bizarre titles with the Zeds? I love them.
- 5:01I anytime Doctor Who, classic Doctor Who does something like
- 5:04that, I get a bit of a thrill, whether it's the space Pirates
- 5:08or the ice warriors. And that was in his Lloyd who
- 5:12had these special titles commissioned essentially just
- 5:15to, you know, just to jazz things up.
- 5:16He was trying to he was trying to make Doctor Who more
- 5:19appealing to an older audience as well as the kids.
- 5:23It wasn't to sort of get rid of the kids.
- 5:25He was just trying to make it a bit more gritty sci-fi.
- 5:27And I think this, this does have a bit of a feel of like of like
- 5:32a quite a mass feel almost. It's suddenly a slightly
- 5:34different programme than it was saying Season 3.
- 5:37Weirdly enough, right? I think I feel like it's looking
- 5:39forward because it's giving us like a a race of monsters that
- 5:44are kind of very in tune with when this was made.
- 5:48And it's also looking back, because it feels a bit like 50s
- 5:51sci-fi at times. Yes, yeah, it is.
- 5:53I mean, quite a mass was 50s, wasn't it?
- 5:56At least. The first one was so yeah.
- 5:58And it's got elements of the sets even feel a little bit
- 6:02like, have you ever seen Pathfinders, which is sort of a
- 6:04precursor to Doctor Who? Don't bother.
- 6:06It's fucking terrible. But.
- 6:09It's Sydney. Evening.
- 6:10And, you know, everybody goes, oh, it's a precursor to Doctor
- 6:13Who, but it is definitely not Doctor Who.
- 6:15It's almost intolerable. So it would be.
- 6:17Pathfinders fans out there. I would like to offer massive
- 6:20kudos for Doctor Derek Martinez, director, for getting those
- 6:24fantastic drone shots of Antarctica.
- 6:28Well, he flew over there, didn't he, on the BBC budget?
- 6:32And is this the only Doctor Who story to feature a load of pin
- 6:35up models on the wall? I think it might be, but
- 6:39they're, they're very welcome. It makes the base field lived
- 6:42in, you know, and those, those dirty boys trapped up the, the
- 6:46South Pole, the North Pole, who knows what they got up to.
- 6:49Mark basically told me that if anybody female turns up on this
- 6:53live screen, I've got to go a woman.
- 6:59So I'll just pretend that's Nathan, all right?
- 7:01But poor old Polly. Poor old Polly shows up.
- 7:05She's the only woman there, and they instantly get her to make
- 7:07some tea and coffee. You.
- 7:10Know what, I'm going to talk a fair bit about the production
- 7:12because I think there are some really impressive elements.
- 7:14I love all this stuff at Ealing. The smoke is going crazy.
- 7:18I mean to the point where nobody can see a bloody thing when they
- 7:21come out of the TARDIS. Yes, they've gone all out and
- 7:23it's a mixture of sawdust and polystyrene, so it's not the
- 7:27sort of stuff you really want blowing in your face.
- 7:29But sure enough, William Hartner was going to have a big load of
- 7:33white stuff shot in his face the moment he stepped out of the
- 7:36TARDIS. I'm fairly certain Michael,
- 7:38crazy news that was going to happen, especially if I was on
- 7:43the production team. It's often said that William
- 7:47Hartnell is not on fine form here.
- 7:50Now obviously we get to Episode 3 and he has a week off because
- 7:52he's got bronchitis, but I don't really think it's true, do you?
- 7:57Not at all. In fact, I went into this
- 7:59assuming because that's that's the rumour that's in all the
- 8:03house Samuel Walker's books that Hartnell, you know, is a way for
- 8:06episode 3 and is a little underwhelming for the rest of
- 8:09it. Actually, the weird thing is, in
- 8:11episode one, they come in and they don't dominate the story.
- 8:16So a lot of the drama is occurring with General Cutler
- 8:20and his cronies and the doctors to the side quietly knowing
- 8:23exactly what is going on. He feels like the most powerful
- 8:26presence in the room, even though he's not sort of
- 8:28dominating it. It's a little bit.
- 8:31It's that trouting thing again, isn't it?
- 8:32Like this weirdly feels like a pilot for the trouting era of
- 8:36he's the smartest person in the room, but he's observing and
- 8:39then jumps in when he needs to. This is Doctor Who's been taking
- 8:42a different direction all of a sudden, a direction that it
- 8:44hasn't been for the last few seasons.
- 8:47Oh, look at that close up on Polly.
- 8:49A woman. That's what happens when a woman
- 8:53walks into a Doctor Who convention.
- 8:56They don't look as good as Annika Wills does in in this.
- 8:59That was you last weekend. You, Ben and Mark when a woman.
- 9:03Lives in the room. Do you know, I've got, I've got
- 9:08to shout out that we were at regenerations this convention
- 9:12and there was a group of young girls.
- 9:14So I would say we're probably about 18 and they were all
- 9:17cosplaying Gallifrey characters and there was a panel with
- 9:21Narvin and they all asked loads of questions.
- 9:24There was like this mini fan group of young girls who were
- 9:27big Gallifrey fans which I just thought was brilliant.
- 9:30That fellow who plays Narvin, I know he's quite a short guy and
- 9:35all that, but I think he's got something.
- 9:38Well, there you go. He's got, he's got a lot of
- 9:39fangirls. That's what I can tell you.
- 9:41He's got a lot of fanboys as well.
- 9:43Yeah, well, there we go. OK, I want to ask you about this
- 9:48regulars line up the 1st Doctor, Polly and Ben.
- 9:52Oh, I could do, I could do a bit more of them.
- 9:54Like I bet Ben and Polly, I don't feel properly served in
- 9:58Doctor Who because they're they're brilliant.
- 9:59They're a brilliant addition. And then Jamie comes along and
- 10:02it's all about Jamie. And I could have done a bit more
- 10:05time with them, just Hart and all, like a season of them would
- 10:07have been absolutely brilliant. But it's, it's not to be.
- 10:10They feel like in this very 60s television way, they feel like
- 10:14real characters. They feel like, God bless Dodo.
- 10:18I'm not the Dodo hater that some people are, but she has a
- 10:21different personality from story to story.
- 10:24And it's just like, and it's quite a bland one a lot of the
- 10:27time. So to have these two who feel
- 10:29like they're fresh out of 1960s London is brilliant.
- 10:33You know what I love in the war machine where she goes, come on,
- 10:36Dodo. The Navy's in trouble.
- 10:42That's how brave. I wish I was in a bar, you know,
- 10:45especially if Ben was there. Anthony Carroll's thinks there's
- 10:48no he goes there. Are female Doctor Who fans
- 10:51question mark? Yeah, there are loads.
- 10:53It's not 1997. There's plenty now, you know,
- 10:56there's. In fact, I think that's a
- 10:58massive service that both the new series and Jodie has done is
- 11:02bringing this wave of female fans.
- 11:05Yeah, and female fans tend to have less Bo at Doctor Who
- 11:08conventions. And greasy hair, Yeah.
- 11:12There's there's a distinct lack of carrier bags.
- 11:14If we're, we're gonna going to do, we're going to do the
- 11:17stereotypes. Oh my God, I love this Hartnell
- 11:21and Warren Beatty together when he's like, I don't like your
- 11:26tone, Sir. And you guys?
- 11:27Warren Beatty. Don't say Warren Beatty.
- 11:30What's his name? Robert Beatty.
- 11:34It's like that's a bit of a catch for Doctor Who, Warren
- 11:36Beatty, the. Doctor Who Accuracy Podcast Toby
- 11:40Haddock just had a heart. Attack, yeah.
- 11:42People don't come here for facts, they come here for Dick
- 11:44jokes. Yeah, that's right.
- 11:46And handsome men, I mean, look at us honestly.
- 11:51No, no, no. But they do have a great
- 11:53tension. They do and and he is again of
- 11:56the first, maybe not the first, but one of the first in a long
- 11:59line of Dick head generals and base commanders.
- 12:02And he's he's not only the lead guest cast, he's sort of one of
- 12:05the lead characters in this. Like there's a world where this
- 12:08is the general cut the show and these other characters have just
- 12:11shown up out of time and space. And I think he's a, he's a
- 12:14fantastic presence. Yeah, he's.
- 12:17Well, he's the first intransigent base commander,
- 12:20isn't he? Yeah, Cutler.
- 12:22So where? How does he rank?
- 12:24Because there's many of them. I think he he ranks fairly
- 12:28highly, You know, I mean, I take him over.
- 12:30What's the one in the Ice Warriors?
- 12:32Oh, leader Clint. Yeah, I take him over Clint.
- 12:35Hobson from the moon base. Hobson's pretty good.
- 12:38I like Hobson. He's he's very stern.
- 12:40He he's got big granddad energy. Hobson has.
- 12:43And just to show that they're not recycling things.
- 12:45Robson from Fury from the Deep. Now hang on, is it Robson in sea
- 12:51to in sea to Death? Or is it Commander Radner?
- 12:55Is that it? No Radner's from sees of death.
- 12:58Yeah, but that's. Radner sees of death, Hobson is
- 13:02the. Oh yeah.
- 13:03Hobson, Robson. Is the ice there are many
- 13:07intransigent base God. Doctor Who Unlimited
- 13:13storytelling potential. But the thing they do with
- 13:17Cutler, but I think really works, is they put his son in
- 13:20danger, so there's an emotional stake.
- 13:25There absolutely is. And all the stuff with the
- 13:27astronauts. I kind of forgot that his son
- 13:30goes up there. But obviously we get the the
- 13:32original two astronauts who meet their untimely end.
- 13:34We also get a cameo from a Star Wars space suits, don't we?
- 13:40Do we? Yeah, one of them's wearing
- 13:42something that a bounty hunter wears in The Empire Strikes
- 13:44Back. Wow, if there's any Star Wars
- 13:46fans out there, if you could let us know please.
- 13:49Yeah, it's one like a lizard creature, and they get the
- 13:52bounty hunters to go after Luke Skywalker.
- 13:55I think it is like, I don't know, I'm not a big Star Wars
- 13:57guy, but it's definitely, definitely reappears at some
- 13:59point. Can I ask anybody out there who
- 14:02might be listening what is your favorite intransigent base
- 14:05commander, please, after all that?
- 14:08Oh, hang on, Beeble. Pete says it's Bossuk the bounty
- 14:11hunter. Bosque, Bosque the bounty
- 14:13hunter. Yes, the Doctor Who Factual
- 14:16Commentary podcast. Now, this was very unusual,
- 14:22wasn't it, having a black astronaut in this?
- 14:25Yeah. It's Earl Cameron who's still
- 14:27with us and that was the choice of Derek Martinez, who basically
- 14:32wanted a diverse cast because it's that Star Trek thing of
- 14:36we're in the future, we're not going to have the prejudices
- 14:38that exist in the 60s. Although also, you know,
- 14:42diversity was already happening within society many, many years
- 14:44before, before 1966, Doctor Who. But it's just it's forward
- 14:50thinking and going. No, there will be people from
- 14:52all different heritages in in positions of power.
- 14:56And, you know, and I think that's a very smart move from
- 14:59Derek. Now that it, and it's a bold
- 15:02move and it's a great move and it's progressive.
- 15:05They do still kill him off though.
- 15:07Yeah, but I mean, it's Doctor Who, everybody dies.
- 15:10So Anthony Carroll says the first black astronaut shown on
- 15:13TVI mean wow, quite possibly. That's something to be proud of.
- 15:18Yeah, well done, Doctor Who. You may have you may have cast
- 15:21the bigot as you lead, but. Joe, somebody asked me this
- 15:25question the other day was like, you know, how do you feel about
- 15:28William Hart, the famous sort of, he was well known for having
- 15:32prejudices and yet you appreciate his performances.
- 15:35And I had that conversation of being able to separate how he
- 15:40may have behaved privately and, and his performances.
- 15:44I've got no issues with that, but I know some people do.
- 15:48Yeah, I mean each of their own. I I mean, I also think that
- 15:53Hartnell sort of prejudices we, we don't really see any of them
- 15:56in the few interviews that exist.
- 15:58It's more sort of by reputation, and I think these things can get
- 16:02blown at proportion slightly. Plus, you know, there's all the
- 16:05stories of Hartnell being secretly gay with Jack Pitts.
- 16:09Hope that's all true, you know? Yeah.
- 16:11I live yet. To see those interviews, but I
- 16:15think you've shocked at 10 people watching this.
- 16:17Now go. What?
- 16:19Hartnell's gay. My God.
- 16:20Look, it's the appearance of the 10th planet.
- 16:22Yes, there it is now. So Malcolm Hulk had pitched an
- 16:26idea of Earth's twin earlier on in the in the 60s, hadn't they?
- 16:30That that never got anywhere in the hidden planet.
- 16:34You know, good old Malcolm Hulk, he got there first.
- 16:36But I, I mean, the idea behind the 10th planet, it's a sort of
- 16:40a sound one, but I'm not entirely sure what its purpose
- 16:44is and what it's doing. It just sort of.
- 16:46Are you drinking the WKD? No, it actually looks like I'm
- 16:49drinking windily, doesn't it? It's it's, it's like a blue
- 16:53fizzy drink with no sugar. Right, I see.
- 16:57I'm saying exotic and cyber esque.
- 17:00It does look like it's from the future.
- 17:02Thank you. Somebody says I think Michelle
- 17:06Nicholas was the first, but on the UK telly I think he was oh,
- 17:10that was Mark Donaldson now. I didn't realise Michelle
- 17:13Nichols. Nichols was actually called
- 17:16Michelle. I always thought it was Michelle
- 17:18until the day she died. When they announced it, I was
- 17:20like, is her name Michelle? It was, it was.
- 17:25And hang on, wasn't she wasn't an she wasn't an actual
- 17:29astronaut, right? He's talking about.
- 17:30Uhura, I mean, I mean, yeah, she was in space, but she was a
- 17:32receptionist, a space receptionist.
- 17:35Yeah, yeah. Hello, my meaty role here on
- 17:39Star. Trek captain, we're.
- 17:40Receiving a signal, God bless her.
- 17:43You know when they did Galaxy Quiz and they brought in
- 17:46Sigourney Weaver and her whole, her whole role was to repeat the
- 17:50exposition that the computer's already said.
- 17:52She's like, I've got one role to do in this thing and I'm going
- 17:55to damn well do it. That's basically who are in Star
- 17:58Trek. It is.
- 17:59And she was going to quit after season one, I think it was.
- 18:03And she ran into Martin Luther King who said we love seeing you
- 18:07on TV, it means a lot to us. And so she stuck around.
- 18:11It's true. Now, you said about you're not
- 18:13quite sure what the point of the 10th planet is.
- 18:16I mean, it's good clickbait is what it is.
- 18:19Yes, they can advertise in the paper that the 10th planet is
- 18:22the latest Doctor Who story. Earth's twin planet is coming
- 18:25along with a race of ruthless robots on it, and everyone's
- 18:28going to turn up. And actually, this did have a
- 18:30massive rating swing because you go back a couple of stories,
- 18:33they were hovering around 4 to 5 million.
- 18:36The end of this story, they're back up nearly till eight again.
- 18:39Yeah, but have now gone around about this story.
- 18:41Well, people like the Cybermen. They knew that Hartner was
- 18:45leaving. And who doesn't love watching
- 18:47Cybermen suck us dry? Nathan possibly has informed us
- 18:53that people don't say space restaurant space champagne and
- 18:56space receptionist. Well, they should they.
- 18:59Should. No, They should.
- 19:00Be doing termination scripts. Exactly.
- 19:05Exactly. Oh did right?
- 19:06What's the Kerry? I've totally lost the plot here.
- 19:08I mean there isn't a huge amount of plot, but I mean, but
- 19:11essentially the astronaut. So this planet drains energy
- 19:16from Earth, from the spacecraft and from people as well.
- 19:18Is that right? Yeah, it basically sucks all the
- 19:22energy. Now, I've known Doctor Who fans
- 19:23that can do this shit, and I don't mean in a sexual way.
- 19:26They can suck the energy out of a room.
- 19:28Well, basically Mondas is a particularly famous super fan
- 19:32who we all know. I'm not saying any word, but you
- 19:36can suck the energy out of a room.
- 19:39It's a good idea. Well, it's a.
- 19:40It's a big. Threat.
- 19:42Yeah, I guess so. Mondas has burnt through all its
- 19:45own energy, so it needs ours, right?
- 19:47Is that the thing? Yeah, yeah.
- 19:49And and as the story goes on, it also sucks Doctor Who dry.
- 19:53It certainly does, yes. Actually, I'm going to wait for
- 19:56Episode 4. But I've got a big question
- 19:57about that. OK, I'm going to give it a new
- 20:00series spin. This last thing.
- 20:03Hello, Joker, BC67 says. Uhura was essentially the radio
- 20:07operator, but she was an officer and that was the big deal in the
- 20:1160s. That's true.
- 20:12That is true. Just having black
- 20:14representation. Up there in space was huge.
- 20:18Absolutely, absolutely. And we've, we've got it here
- 20:21momentarily before everybody dies.
- 20:23So this is the the the planet Mondas it the planets spin that
- 20:28fast. They do now, yes.
- 20:33What? What is there all missed around
- 20:35it as well? Space is is very missed.
- 20:37I suppose it's been propelled through space, hasn't it?
- 20:40Because it's basically a giant spacecraft.
- 20:42The Doctor Who loves that idea, doesn't it?
- 20:43It's like we're going to pilot an entire planet somewhere.
- 20:47Yeah, do look, that looks just like Malaysia.
- 20:51Upside down Malaysia though, because what they've done is
- 20:53they've taken the planet and they've just spun it on its
- 20:56head. That's clever.
- 21:00I do love though how hard or completely pulls the rug now and
- 21:02goes. Now have a look at that bit of
- 21:04paper I've showed you earlier, and he's written the whole plot
- 21:06down before. Why do we why do we think Doctor
- 21:10Who's got full knowledge of what's going on?
- 21:13Well, he's been about a bit now, you know.
- 21:15Yeah, that's true. The savages have been watching
- 21:18him on all his adventures. You.
- 21:19Know he goes can can you tune in to a couple of my my future
- 21:23adventures, please? Thank you very much.
- 21:24Oh, the 10th planet. This looks good.
- 21:26I'll watch this. Maybe he's written it down
- 21:28because, you know that knows the final episode's going to get
- 21:30lost by Blue Peter. And before anybody types in the
- 21:32chat, I know Blue Peter didn't actually lose the episode.
- 21:35Yes. Now can we, can we debunk this
- 21:37then? Because I always figured that
- 21:39was that's the case, but Mark was telling me otherwise.
- 21:42No, I don't think it was. I think there's no evidence to
- 21:44suggest they lost it. Maybe it went, maybe a copy went
- 21:48walkies from there, but who knows, Maybe it's sat with some
- 21:50collector somewhere. Sorry.
- 21:52I know that that triggers Mark to have one of his, one of his
- 21:55moments. So we've got a question from
- 21:59Daniel who says if they ever do another story featuring 1 bass,
- 22:03there should probably be a line in there about it being the 9th
- 22:06planet since we don't count Pluto.
- 22:08Anymore. Very true, very true.
- 22:11When did that happen? That's a really oh 90s I want.
- 22:15To say at some point between the 10th planet and now.
- 22:18Yeah, we've got a, we've got a, an emoji from Mark.
- 22:23He's not happy. I think when I was at school
- 22:26there was nine planets, so it must have.
- 22:28I left school in the year 2000 so it must have happened in the
- 22:31last 23 years. Let's say what's going on the
- 22:36screen right now? So we're heading across to, I'm
- 22:38not sure he's like the president of the Earth or something like
- 22:41that. He's got, he's got, but he's
- 22:43surrounded by sort of mixed races.
- 22:45Yeah. And we're kind of doing what
- 22:48Rusty Davis would do later on when he brought the show back in
- 22:502005. He's making it international.
- 22:53We don't really touch on that again after this really, do we?
- 22:57No, we don't. And it it just makes it feel
- 23:00like a a more global threat. The performance is great, though
- 23:05the fellas a bit wooden. Yeah, I know, but it's fine.
- 23:09He's he's the sort of person that's allowed to be wooden.
- 23:13And see, now Cutler wants more information from the doctor.
- 23:17Right, Yeah, I, I, I really like Cutler.
- 23:20I also, apparently he doesn't. He goes off script with almost
- 23:23every line. He sort of says that the rough
- 23:26edges of what you what you need to say to get the point along,
- 23:28but it's basically. Trout and esque performance.
- 23:31Exactly, he's improvised it. Nah.
- 23:33When did Hartnell start losing teeth?
- 23:37I I feel like it on. Earth, it was the gunfires.
- 23:39Weren't you paying? Attention.
- 23:41Very true. So it was it.
- 23:42It was in in story, was it? Yeah.
- 23:45Really. So no.
- 23:46That was a back tooth though. Yeah, yeah.
- 23:49So when did he start losing front teeth?
- 23:50I'm. Not I think he was.
- 23:52He was he wasn't a very well man at this point, was he The thing
- 23:57the. Thing is, losing your teeth used
- 23:58to be quite a big deal in the respect that people actually
- 24:01wanted it to get it. I remember my granddad pulling
- 24:04out his last tooth because he was very excited because that he
- 24:07could finally get his false teeth and that all my
- 24:10grandparents back in the day had false teeth because their teeth
- 24:12could come out. My Nan used to tell me about
- 24:16when they tied the string around it and put it on a doorknob and
- 24:19then slam the door. Yeah, no, I.
- 24:21Not think of anything worse. My Nan did that to me with my
- 24:25when I was losing my baby teeth. Traumatized from such a young
- 24:31age? Oh look, what's this model
- 24:33spaceship arriving? I think the model works really
- 24:36good. It's very good and in fact I
- 24:38love the way because they've got layers in healing, they can come
- 24:42up out of the floor as well. This whole sequence actually, I
- 24:46think is very memorable. It's brilliant now.
- 24:49When I was a kid, this was like one of the few bits of 10th
- 24:52Planet you could see. It was used on Cybermen, the
- 24:55early years, the VHS and I was, you know, I was a strange kid,
- 24:59but I was obsessed with the 10th Planet because I couldn't see
- 25:02it. It wasn't available to me
- 25:04anywhere. I would, I just needed to see
- 25:06it. Those cyber designs and
- 25:07everything I just thought were were brilliant and I used to
- 25:11mimic the Cybermen voices. Now I used to have a thing
- 25:16called an echo mic when I was a kid and it was this huge mic
- 25:19where you could do the cyber voices and it looks a lot like
- 25:22this, but it was. I've got something in the
- 25:25bedroom just like that you. Know I bet you have but it it
- 25:29was a lot bigger. So I bought this one hoping I
- 25:31could do cyber voices with it. But the echo's shit so you don't
- 25:34you don't really get anything out of it.
- 25:36But as a kid I would I would do that impression constantly with
- 25:40the echo mind go there Well not return, but I don't really get
- 25:43any echo out of this at all. So I spent £3.00 on this Joe
- 25:47£3.00. There's a load of old shit and
- 25:49it doesn't work. So that's my one prop.
- 25:52You spent £60 on them tomorrow Windows.
- 25:54You spent £3.00 on this. I'm caught.
- 25:56In this. Fortune and I.
- 25:58Now this cliffhanger with this cyber men sort of touching their
- 26:02dead bodies, how fucking creepy and alien do they look?
- 26:08Look at his eye inside the eye socket.
- 26:11It's so. I mean, they genuinely look like
- 26:15screaming cadavers. Don't.
- 26:16They they do. It's like it's this weird mix of
- 26:20sort of slightly hokey design and actually really creepy.
- 26:23And I think we'll get into the original design of the Cybermen
- 26:27like in the next episode, but it's a brilliant cliffhanger and
- 26:31they just look so alien. Them coming out of the snow
- 26:34because, because like I said earlier, the snow is like a
- 26:36Blizzard. So you can kind of, they're
- 26:38barely perceptible. So you can see people sort of
- 26:41emerging. Yeah.
- 26:42And there's, you know, full Emma Peel karate chops all the way in
- 26:46it. Absolutely.
- 26:47It's like, I don't know if you ever saw the cyber naughts on
- 26:50the. Yes, I did, yeah.
- 26:51And they had that sort of that whip I get.
- 26:54I get the impression the cyber men smacking someone like that
- 26:57means basically instant death. Absolutely, Nathan Bottomley
- 27:01says. Mine too.
- 27:02That wasn't just a miserable English thing.
- 27:03I think about the teeth and Anthony Carroll says the tooth
- 27:06planet. Very good answerable.
- 27:08Allen said Test Yes, we're receiving you, Joe, Don't worry.
- 27:14So that's episode one done. Absolutely flew by.
- 27:17Everybody pulls your episodes. We're going to go into Episode 2
- 27:20in just a second.
