- 0:00Speaker 1: Let us pray. And the daughter of Pharaoh came down
- 0:04Speaker 1: to wash herself at the river. Then her maidens walked
- 0:07Speaker 1: along by the riverside. And when she came and saw
- 0:11Speaker 1: the ark among the flags, she sent her maid to
- 0:14Speaker 1: fetch it. Exodus 2.5 Heavenly Father, when the enemy tries
- 0:21Speaker 1: to attack my life, my family, my business, and my purpose,
- 0:26Speaker 1: I will praise you. is like the baby Moses in
- 0:30Speaker 1: Exodus 1 to 2.10. You've prepared me a basket of redemption.
- 0:35Speaker 1: You have prepared a way for me when there seems
- 0:38Speaker 1: to be no way out. I praise you for your
- 0:41Speaker 1: divine protection as I move and float down the Nile
- 0:46Speaker 1: River called life. And as I move, I thank you
- 0:51Speaker 1: that the current of your favor is leading me to
- 0:55Speaker 1: a place only you can grant me access to. Thank you, Jesus,
- 1:00Speaker 1: that when I arrive at the destination of my destiny,
- 1:04Speaker 1: you have already chosen the right people to help guide
- 1:07Speaker 1: and grow me. I declare that, like Moses, living in
- 1:12Speaker 1: two worlds, I too am multifaceted. I declare that I
- 1:17Speaker 1: have been called to break the status quo. I declare
- 1:21Speaker 1: I can walk in any room and know that because
- 1:24Speaker 1: your anointing is on my life, I belong at the
- 1:28Speaker 1: table of success. My steps have been ordered by the Lord,
- 1:34Speaker 1: and I will lift up a shout of praise because
- 1:37Speaker 1: with you in my life, I can't lose. In Jesus' name, amen.

- 2:04Speaker 2: Baby from the Nile. In our last story, we finished
- 2:08Speaker 2: the stories inspired by the book of Genesis and Joseph's
- 2:12Speaker 2: tragedy that God turned into victory. His brothers had sold
- 2:16Speaker 2: him into slavery to Egypt. However, he became a great
- 2:20Speaker 2: and mighty governor and was able to save his family
- 2:23Speaker 2: from famine. Now we will begin stories inspired by the
- 2:27Speaker 2: book of Exodus. In this story, we will learn how
- 2:30Speaker 2: the Israelites were prospering in Egypt. But a new pharaoh
- 2:34Speaker 2: felt threatened by them, forced them into slavery, and commanded
- 2:38Speaker 2: that their baby boys be killed.
- 2:42Speaker 3: Hello, I'm Pastor Jack Graham with today's episode of the
- 2:45Speaker 3: Bible in a Year podcast. In our previous episode, we
- 2:48Speaker 3: concluded the book of Genesis. And as we closed out
- 2:52Speaker 3: the story of Joseph, he was revered by both Egyptians
- 2:56Speaker 3: and Hebrews as a great man of God and a deliverer,
- 2:59Speaker 3: a rescuer of the people. Today we begin the book
- 3:03Speaker 3: of Exodus and find a very different reality for the
- 3:07Speaker 3: descendants of Jacob. Years have passed and the new Pharaoh
- 3:11Speaker 3: does not see the prosperous Hebrew people as a reminder
- 3:14Speaker 3: of how God rescued Egypt, but rather as a threat
- 3:18Speaker 3: to his kingdom. The Hebrew people find themselves now enslaved
- 3:23Speaker 3: and forced to endure hard labor and eventually watch powerlessly
- 3:27Speaker 3: as Pharaoh murders scores and scores of their infant sons.
- 3:31Speaker 3: in the midst of unbelievable wickedness and sorrow, we will
- 3:35Speaker 3: still see God's faithfulness. And that faithfulness will be shown
- 3:39Speaker 3: through a baby boy who is delivered to one day
- 3:42Speaker 3: lead the people to freedom. Let's listen now to today's reading.
- 3:50Speaker 2: The family of Jacob was delivered from the famine and
- 3:53Speaker 2: brought to Egypt. There, under Joseph's guidance and God's provisions,
- 3:59Speaker 2: Seventy people grew into thousands.
- 4:02Speaker 4: Scattered throughout all Egypt, Hebrews thrived and multiplied. Joseph and
- 4:07Speaker 4: the twelve brothers of Israel had long passed, but their
- 4:10Speaker 4: descendants had grown into a strong, independent, and healthy nation,
- 4:15Speaker 4: just as God promised they would. A new pharaoh had emerged,
- 4:20Speaker 4: and the memory of Joseph's influence had long passed. He
- 4:24Speaker 4: looked down at the Hebrew people, multiplying into a great
- 4:27Speaker 4: nation right under his nose. He feared that if they
- 4:31Speaker 4: continued to multiply, they would leave Egypt and join their enemies.
- 4:36Speaker 4: So the heavy hand of Pharaoh descended upon the Hebrew people.
- 4:40Speaker 4: To squash their hope and fruitlessness, he enslaved them. Under
- 4:45Speaker 4: the mighty boot of Egypt, the sons and daughters of
- 4:48Speaker 4: Israel were made slaves and tortured. Pharaoh oppressed them with
- 4:53Speaker 4: hard labor. yet there was a blessing still upon them.
- 4:57Speaker 4: Just as their ancestor Joseph had thrived under slavery, so
- 5:01Speaker 4: did the Hebrew people. They multiplied even greater under the
- 5:05Speaker 4: crucible of Pharaoh's cruelty. They were forced to build cities.
- 5:10Speaker 2: But ended up occupying them with their numbers. Pharaoh, becoming
- 5:14Speaker 2: more calloused and afraid, took his cruelty to a new level.
- 5:18Speaker 2: He gathered the Hebrew midwives, those responsible for helping the
- 5:22Speaker 2: Hebrew women with labor. While you are aiding them in labor,
- 5:27Speaker 2: allow the girls to live, but kill any baby boy
- 5:30Speaker 2: you see, he said. Pharaoh would punish the midwives if
- 5:34Speaker 2: they disobeyed. Luckily, the midwives feared God more than Pharaoh.
- 5:40Speaker 2: They would not do as he commanded. When Pharaoh saw
- 5:43Speaker 2: that the boys were still being born, he gathered the
- 5:46Speaker 2: midwives and asked, Why have you disobeyed me? The midwives,
- 5:52Speaker 2: with a quiet confidence of someone who knows they did
- 5:55Speaker 2: the right thing, simply said, The Hebrew women are not
- 5:59Speaker 2: like the Egyptian women. They are strong and vigorous, and
- 6:03Speaker 2: have their babies so quickly that we cannot get there
- 6:05Speaker 2: in time. They lied. Yet God blessed them. Pharaoh, determined
- 6:11Speaker 2: to give in to the darkness and pride gripping his heart,
- 6:14Speaker 2: used his power to enact a law God would never forgive.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Throw every newborn Hebrew boy into the Nile, Pharaoh decreed.
- 6:24Speaker 2: And soldiers scattered throughout the city, pulling screaming children from
- 6:28Speaker 2: their mothers' arms. The Nile had engulfed hundreds of babies.
- 6:33Speaker 2: The screams of children, mothers and fathers, echoed throughout all Egypt.
- 6:39Speaker 2: Pharaoh's brutality acted as a dark cloud shrouding over all
- 6:43Speaker 2: the land. Tears and blood filled the streets, and the
- 6:47Speaker 2: heart of Pharaoh grew darker and darker. Meanwhile, a Hebrew
- 6:53Speaker 2: woman was concealing her baby boy for three months. She
- 6:57Speaker 2: nursed him in secret, knowing that eventually he would be discovered.
- 7:01Speaker 2: She wove a basket of papyrus reeds and waterproofed it
- 7:04Speaker 2: with tar and pitch. With the diligence of Noah and
- 7:08Speaker 2: his ark, she crafted a vessel of redemption for her son.
- 7:12Speaker 2: and sent him downstream towards the palaces. The baby boy's
- 7:16Speaker 2: sister trailed the basket down the river, keeping close watch
- 7:20Speaker 2: from afar as the basket traveled miles downstream. Soon, Pharaoh's
- 7:26Speaker 2: daughter came to the riverbank to bathe. She and her
- 7:29Speaker 2: attendants played in the water and relaxed in the sun.
- 7:33Speaker 2: The princess saw a basket floating along and sent her
- 7:36Speaker 2: maid to go fetch it. The princess peered into the
- 7:39Speaker 2: basket to find a baby boy swaddled, and crying. Pity
- 7:44Speaker 2: overcame the princess, for she knew that the baby must
- 7:47Speaker 2: have been Hebrew. She fell in love with him and
- 7:50Speaker 2: was determined to care for him, but the baby needed
- 7:53Speaker 2: a nurse. Suddenly, the baby's sister emerged from the reeds
- 7:58Speaker 2: by the river. Excited, yet scared, she suggested that her
- 8:02Speaker 2: mother could take care of the child until he was grown.
- 8:06Speaker 2: The princess agreed. Thus the baby was raised by both
- 8:09Speaker 2: his Hebrew biological mother and his Egyptian adopted mother. He
- 8:14Speaker 2: would grow up in two worlds, never feeling fully part
- 8:17Speaker 2: of one or the other. The princess looked upon her
- 8:21Speaker 2: son and gave him the name Moses, for he was
- 8:25Speaker 2: delivered out of the water. Moses, now a prince of Egypt,
- 8:30Speaker 2: would soon realize what it truly means to be delivered.
- 8:36Speaker 3: As the book of Exodus opens, the Hebrew nation is
- 8:39Speaker 3: grown from Israel's family numbering 70, into a prosperous and
- 8:43Speaker 3: thriving people scattered throughout the land of Egypt. It was
- 8:47Speaker 3: just as God had promised Jacob, that his descendants would
- 8:51Speaker 3: grow and be a great and mighty nation. Though living
- 8:55Speaker 3: far from Canaan, now living in a foreign land, God
- 8:58Speaker 3: did just as he promised. Israel was a mighty nation.
- 9:02Speaker 3: But there's a new Pharaoh on the thrones. one who
- 9:05Speaker 3: knows nothing about Joseph or what God did through Joseph.
- 9:08Speaker 3: All he sees are the threats of the Hebrews, foreigners
- 9:11Speaker 3: multiplying his kingdom and growing into very wealthy people. So
- 9:16Speaker 3: fear seizes him and he seizes the Hebrews, enslaving them
- 9:20Speaker 3: and forcing them to work to build cities in his empire.
- 9:23Speaker 3: But God's blessing remains upon his people and their numbers
- 9:28Speaker 3: increase all the more. So the Pharaoh realizes that if
- 9:32Speaker 3: this continues in this way, the Hebrews will outnumber his people,
- 9:35Speaker 3: and they could overtake his land by force. A deep, dark, evil,
- 9:41Speaker 3: devilish evil creeps into the heart of this man, and
- 9:44Speaker 3: he orders the mass slaughter of male Hebrew babies. He
- 9:48Speaker 3: orders the midwives to perpetrate this heinous act, but they
- 9:51Speaker 3: fear God more than they fear Pharaoh, so they choose
- 9:54Speaker 3: to disobey the Pharaoh. These midwives certainly acted courageously. They
- 10:00Speaker 3: feared God more than they feared man, so they did
- 10:04Speaker 3: what they could to protect the lives of innocent babies.
- 10:07Speaker 3: God in turn chose to bless them because they did
- 10:10Speaker 3: the right thing, the godly thing, and the Hebrew population
- 10:14Speaker 3: increased despite Pharaoh's order of infanticide. Now Pharaoh is really mad,
- 10:19Speaker 3: enraged in fact, so he enlists his army to tear
- 10:22Speaker 3: babies from their mother's arms and throw them into the Nile.
- 10:27Speaker 3: As the Egyptian soldiers tear through Hebrew homes, one mother
- 10:31Speaker 3: conceives a plan to hide her boy and to save
- 10:34Speaker 3: his life. She bravely places her baby in a basket
- 10:40Speaker 3: and floats him down the great Nile River to be
- 10:42Speaker 3: discovered by an Egyptian woman. She trusted God to protect
- 10:47Speaker 3: her son and rescue him. And none other than Pharaoh's
- 10:50Speaker 3: daughter discovers the child and has compassion on him. And
- 10:55Speaker 3: God's faithfulness and trustworthiness does not stop there, of course.
- 10:59Speaker 3: He provides for this child's mother to nurse her baby
- 11:02Speaker 3: and to be with him until he's old enough to
- 11:04Speaker 3: go to the palace. His adoptive mother names the boy
- 11:09Speaker 3: Moses because she rescued him from the waters. Moses will
- 11:14Speaker 3: be raised in two worlds, close to his biological family,
- 11:18Speaker 3: a Hebrew, but protected by the Pharaoh's hand because his
- 11:22Speaker 3: adoptive mother was herself an Egyptian princess. But it seems
- 11:27Speaker 3: that he grows up really not fitting into either world.
- 11:30Speaker 3: And yet God will work through Moses and use him,
- 11:34Speaker 3: one of the mightiest man who ever lived, to rescue
- 11:37Speaker 3: the enslaved Hebrews and take them to the land God
- 11:40Speaker 3: had promised. Before he gets there, though, Moses will experience
- 11:44Speaker 3: the sting of rejection in both his worlds, and it
- 11:47Speaker 3: will send him on a journey far from Egypt and
- 11:49Speaker 3: the suffering of his people till God shows up once
- 11:52Speaker 3: again and changes his life forever. We'll learn more about
- 11:56Speaker 3: that the next time. Dear God, we're often stunned by
- 12:01Speaker 3: the evil and the wickedness of humanity. And in today's story,
- 12:06Speaker 3: we have seen the worst kinds of evil that men
- 12:09Speaker 3: are able to commit. And yet through it all, We
- 12:13Speaker 3: see your protection. We see your provision and your promises fulfilled. Lord,
- 12:20Speaker 3: like the midwives, may we fear you more than we
- 12:23Speaker 3: fear men. May we be courageous always in our faith
- 12:27Speaker 3: and act in ways that please you. In Jesus' name, amen.
