- 0:00Again, see your face. Very much shout out to you.
- 0:05I think it's Aaron Lewis. I still haven't looked it up,
- 0:07but I'm pretty sure that's the singer of that song.
- 0:09I'm almost positive legend, though.
- 0:12Good song, one of the best. So we're in Nebraska.
- 0:18Nebraska. With my guy Ethan and Scott, who
- 0:21he was on his first podcast yesterday and he's on his second
- 0:25one today. Technically, you were actually
- 0:27on a podcast today because it went in.
- 0:30Still, Yeah, yeah. So technically you went from
- 0:32doing. Zero podcasts to.
- 0:34Two in the same. Day, yeah, so we start lining.
- 0:36Day Yeah, I was about to say start lining them up next couple
- 0:39months. We just go 2A day.
- 0:43That water is so good. Shout out to Casey's.
- 0:47Yeah, dude. Have you had their pizza yet?
- 0:49No, I don't look at that. You're like the fourth person
- 0:51that asked us though. Everyone keeps.
- 0:53I guess we're going to have to get Casey.
- 0:54I would say before you leave, definitely check out Casey's.
- 0:56Pizza. So we have a couple of Nebraska
- 0:58specific questions. Number one, do you guys have
- 1:01Chili's? Like the restaurant?
- 1:04Yeah. Yeah, OK.
- 1:05I haven't seen one, but I've been create.
- 1:06I've been talking about Chili's. You know, now that you say that,
- 1:10the Chili's that I think I know of, I'll have to double check
- 1:14it's still there. Oh, it might have turned into a
- 1:16Chick-fil-A, I'm not sure. OK, but we're looking for a
- 1:19Chili's or an Applebee's along the road.
- 1:21Like they have these margaritas for Halloween that have like
- 1:24sharks in them and different themes.
- 1:26And I could go for one. They're packed with sugar.
- 1:29Terrible for you, but when in Rome?
- 1:32Absolutely. Or when in Nebraska.
- 1:35Yeah, like I said, the the things that most people want to
- 1:39hit are like Runza amigos, OK? And those are a couple of fast
- 1:44food joints, but they're Midwest Pacific Amigos is like, you
- 1:47know, Mexican food runzas. Like it's hard to describe a
- 1:52runs. It's like a casserole.
- 1:54Unlike a meat casserole, it's like a sandwich.
- 1:57That sounds amazing. Definitely try out.
- 2:00OK. All right.
- 2:01It's it's. You got to go.
- 2:02So, all right, so we just did a shooting battle and Scott
- 2:08basically just came off the rails.
- 2:09Yeah, I walked away with it. He's in a good way.
- 2:12He. Smoked us.
- 2:13I was anticipating trouble from you guys, but I didn't.
- 2:19I didn't figure it was going to be so hot and so Scott right
- 2:22away. Everything.
- 2:24That was our first. Straight bar.
- 2:26And spin wheel. He smoked everything over 100
- 2:29locked in. Oh yeah, 100%.
- 2:31And we think we think we've assessed the new confidence is
- 2:36the big Ranger energy, big nice color to kind of dark, but big,
- 2:41it's big. And I think that's what's really
- 2:43bringing you the confidence is the big dark truck.
- 2:47Would you say that? I would agree.
- 2:48I think it doesn't hurt. No, it doesn't hurt.
- 2:50It's not having that thing. I mean, maybe we do like a a
- 2:54nice little pan of the truck right here, but I mean, look at
- 2:57it it's. Gorgeous it is what?
- 3:00It's nice. And then we got a Honda Pilot.
- 3:02Oh dude, that legendary reliable.
- 3:04That pilot has seen something. Love it.
- 3:06It has. And you came home usually on a
- 3:10hunt. You want to come home heavier?
- 3:13You actually came home quite a bit lighter.
- 3:15I did. Let's talk about that.
- 3:16So real. I mean I have haunted a lot
- 3:22where I'm like nowhere near camp all day for a month straight
- 3:28sometimes and I thought many times, hey, my stuff could get
- 3:32stolen. Oh yeah, it's possible.
- 3:33I mean, it's always in the back of your.
- 3:34Head, but it's never happened to me yet.
- 3:36I'm sure it will one day. What was that like coming back?
- 3:40Your stuff's gone. So to give people a little bit
- 3:45of a background, I spent 16 days in Colorado and on the 16th day,
- 3:50which was season ender, I had at this point made a great plan on
- 3:57a bowl that we were calling Donkey Kong.
- 3:59And I had good plans to like go in there and and he was living
- 4:04off this first shelf that was about 1500 feet up.
- 4:08And most of it's all like deadfall and like cliffed out
- 4:11stuff. So it's like I'm almost
- 4:13impossible to get up to him and in order to drop down on him
- 4:16like it's an all day event, you know.
- 4:18So I had been working this side and, and I basically I knew
- 4:23where he was using this side of the mountain.
- 4:25And then right at the end of season, he switched and he went
- 4:28up to the other side of the mountain.
- 4:30And in some sense it was almost easier because I was like, I
- 4:34know this side pretty good. And, and now like he's on this
- 4:39side, but I can hear this side way better than I can hear this
- 4:41side. So I knew exactly where he was,
- 4:43where he was locating. And, and so I, I had a like a
- 4:46banger plan to go in on him and I went up and I had left camp
- 4:52that day at 5:30 AM and then spent basically the entire day
- 4:56hunting and then gotten back to camp like 9:30 that night.
- 5:01And yeah, I mean, I, I rolled up into camp and my first thought
- 5:05was like, OK, I probably placed, I, I probably move like where
- 5:09did I move to? And like instantly is in the
- 5:11back. Because at this point I've moved
- 5:12camp two or three times over the mountain, like in there 16 days.
- 5:15And I've kind of just popped around and jumped around to at
- 5:18one point I was camping lower with some people originally, and
- 5:22then once the spot moved up higher on the mound, I had
- 5:25better service and I was like. Yeah, that's that service at
- 5:28campus. Nice.
- 5:29Super nice and so. Now I do got to say quick
- 5:33tangent started from the bottom, but now I got star link baby.
- 5:37Oh yeah. Oh, I feel wealthy out there.
- 5:40Oh yeah, I feel, yeah. And even the service that they
- 5:43have out there, you can't even like, I was having problems like
- 5:46you couldn't post a video. You would be able to post
- 5:49pictures, but if a video had just too much data.
- 5:52So it was like it was bad. And so just kind of updated to
- 5:56my Instagram throughout pictures and stuff like that throughout I
- 5:59what I could. And then, yeah, coming back to
- 6:01camp, I was like, for sure, like I left all my coolers at the
- 6:06other can. And I'm just remembering that
- 6:08like, I put them up here. And then I was like, it kind of
- 6:10crossed through your mind and it's like, no, they were here,
- 6:13you know what I mean? Like, you don't ever want to be
- 6:15like, Oh yeah, for sure. I just got my stuff jacked, you
- 6:18know, But it hit me when the only thing that I had seen that
- 6:23they left was a trash bag. And at this point, I'm like, Oh
- 6:27my gosh. Maybe like, you know, you go
- 6:29through all of the scenarios, maybe like Forest Service, like
- 6:32thought this was an abandoned camp and they've got all my
- 6:34stuff on a trailer. Like, you know, and then I was
- 6:36like, the trash can there, man. Like they, they left the trash
- 6:39bag. Like if it was Forest Service,
- 6:41that they would have been up the can.
- 6:43Yeah, exactly. And so, yeah, I was looking
- 6:45around and it was kind of hitting me, all I was missing in
- 6:50chunks. And I was like, at first it was
- 6:52like, shoot, my coolers are gone.
- 6:54That sucks. And then I looked over and the
- 6:57brand new hammock I had bought, it was missing.
- 7:00And then I looked over there, my camp chair was missing.
- 7:03And then I was like, oh for sure, they stole my archery
- 7:05block. Yeah.
- 7:07And that and that. Video.
- 7:09You need to post that as a real. That's the funniest.
- 7:11Part I couldn't believe it. It was like, yeah, for sure they
- 7:14did. And so they obviously that
- 7:16archery block was missing too. And and so then in my head, I'm
- 7:20like, I don't even know. Like my first thought was like,
- 7:24it just happened, you know what I mean?
- 7:26Even though it probably happened at 7:00 AM, you know what I
- 7:30mean? In my head I was like, oh dude,
- 7:32like maybe. I must have just missed.
- 7:34Yeah, exactly. So I drove up the mountain
- 7:36thinking in the back of my head that maybe I would find a cooler
- 7:40with or, you know, a trailer with some coolers or something.
- 7:42But I mean, there was nobody up on the top side of the mountain.
- 7:46I drove all the way back down and nobody, you know, I looked
- 7:48in a couple of camps just to see like, how bold would it be to
- 7:53steal something and then be camping?
- 7:55But also, but also it was like my last ditch effort at trying
- 7:59to find my stuff. And so yeah, I think mainly what
- 8:04sucked the most is like, it didn't even hit me that like my
- 8:07hunt was over right away because like, I was just missing stuff
- 8:10and like trying to figure out my brain was just all over the
- 8:13place and I was like, dude, oh, this sucks.
- 8:14Like, I wonder what was in that dry storage?
- 8:16Like I had some camping stuff and and then I started thinking
- 8:19about it and I was like, I don't have any coolers, dude.
- 8:21Like if I killed that bull tomorrow like.
- 8:23What am I going to do? What am I?
- 8:24Supposed to do yeah and so I started calling around and the
- 8:27nearest place that had a cooler would have been like 3 hour
- 8:29drive so it's like I'm not even I'm not even trying to do this
- 8:33anymore yeah I was like I felt like there was like the day
- 8:36before so like it was basically just me up there for the last
- 8:41like 6 days I had gotten in between camps basically Joel and
- 8:47Alyssa were supposed to be there Alyssa was planning on spending
- 8:50three days and she got altitude sickness right away and so she
- 8:53has saw him off the mountain and then Joel got sick and so like I
- 8:57think I haunted one or two days with Joel maybe and I mean it
- 9:01was just basic you know it was just him kind of getting out to
- 9:05an easy spot to try to hunt you know it was just he started
- 9:08getting a head cold and a fever and it just wasn't good so.
- 9:11And you lined up with some guys from Texas, right?
- 9:13Yeah. So that was cool.
- 9:14Yeah, so they had, they had been camping there the year prior to
- 9:18it. And dude, like you should, I've
- 9:20got some video of it. I'll, I'll end up making a video
- 9:22of it. But their camp is like they
- 9:24brought 2 deep freezers. Oh, cool.
- 9:26My generator canvas and freezer. It was the setup.
- 9:31That's the way to go. That's setup.
- 9:32And they cooked so much. We had like gar patties one
- 9:35night. That's cool.
- 9:37Yeah, dude, they had a gumbo, like a Kraus gumbo that they
- 9:40had. Yeah, dude, they were just.
- 9:42So when I, when I got up there, I started talking with them.
- 9:46He was like, yeah, we remember you from last year.
- 9:48Yeah. And so we kind of talked.
- 9:50And so it wasn't that evening, but then it kind of started me
- 9:53thinking that I was like, man, like really what I want to do
- 9:56out here is I like, I want to get something on film.
- 9:58And if I'm filming and hunting, it's just so hard.
- 10:00I mean, you guys know. And so it kind of hit me that I
- 10:05was like, I could probably tag along with them and I might be
- 10:08able to get some footage for them.
- 10:09And it'll be beneficial for both of us.
- 10:11That way if somebody kills, then if they've got it on camera, we
- 10:14can receive the footage and you know, if we need to look at the
- 10:17shot or whatever. So.
- 10:19That's very valuable. That's one thing I really like
- 10:21about is it, you know, if you're unsure of something, you can
- 10:24just. You know, Oh yeah, tape.
- 10:26Or even the audio before we. Even went to go get the lane
- 10:29shot of cow and before we, you know, even got into the woods to
- 10:34look at the arrow, we knew exactly where the shot was and
- 10:37where it came in and where it exited, what to expect, you
- 10:40know, looking for the elk and it was a it was a good shot.
- 10:44I've never seen. So get this.
- 10:47We're shooting a camp today. The day of that evening.
- 10:51He shot that cow and we're shooting and he's, we're
- 10:55shooting just behind camp, like his dad's kind of in camp.
- 10:58And he was like, Lane, your arrows are like real loud.
- 11:01He's like, I don't know what like.
- 11:03So I started looking at him. Dude, I've never seen so much
- 11:06helical in my life like this. This.
- 11:09Yeah. And I think he said the archery
- 11:11shop did it for him or whatever, but his arrows were whistling.
- 11:16Yeah. To the point where at 35 yards
- 11:19that helped up the arrow. Oh, yeah.
- 11:21She heard that shot and went down and it came in a little
- 11:24high, but like, you see exit and you can see it on the other side
- 11:28of her. I mean, it's it's double wall.
- 11:30She went 60 yards a foul left. Perfect, Perfect.
- 11:34But yeah, it was. It was why it's pretty wild.
- 11:37Yeah, that's not fun. I mean, getting something stolen
- 11:41like that just, you know, makes you not trust people and feel
- 11:46kind of just this like nasty feeling, you know, it's just
- 11:50like such a bummer. And and not only that, but what
- 11:53I think about is what if you had been, I don't know, that was
- 12:01your only food and water? No, I know I could.
- 12:03Have you know that could have been really bad.
- 12:05You know, three days, Spike. Camp and your car's broken down
- 12:08or something, you know, And then now you have no food, water, and
- 12:11no transportation. Like, you know, I mean, it's a
- 12:14hypothetical, but it's certainly possible.
- 12:16No. And you know.
- 12:17There's no regard for someone else who you know, whoever did.
- 12:20That I'm pretty sure I know who was to the day before.
- 12:24I had seen a couple of logging crews that were on the mountain
- 12:27that look kind of scallywag, you know, they were definitely some
- 12:31rough dudes. But.
- 12:33I don't know if that's who did it or not, but I just have a
- 12:35hard time thinking that another hunter in that same unit would
- 12:38end up stealing from us. You know, everybody that we
- 12:40talked to was so nice, right? You know, we talked to a guy
- 12:44that had been hunting at Mountain since the 90s and he
- 12:46was like, never had anything happen and now so.
- 12:50Do you bump into a lot of hunters out there?
- 12:53When we first got out there, it was busier than I've ever seen
- 12:55it. That spot that we were at in the
- 12:58unit, I just felt like it was a popular spot.
- 13:00I feel like you get anywhere outside of where we were at, you
- 13:03could probably open up with, you know, not so much pressure.
- 13:06But I also think depending on where the hunting pressure is
- 13:09at, it can help you in certain shots.
- 13:11I mean, you're talking with some of the guys from Texas.
- 13:14I killed a bull in that same unit last year.
- 13:17And I was talking with him and I was like, yeah, he's like that
- 13:20day that you killed that bull. We were just were like
- 13:23coordinating where he they were at.
- 13:25And I was like, I wonder, like, I wonder if part of the reason I
- 13:28killed that bull wasn't because those guys for Texas were higher
- 13:31on the mountain and put pressure to the point where those elk
- 13:34will a little lower a little sooner.
- 13:36And it was just, I wouldn't have seen him if it wasn't for them,
- 13:38you know, so. Yeah, there elk hunting's weird.
- 13:41Like I think a lot of times like especially in over the counter,
- 13:46like not very good units. I think a lot of times guys
- 13:52think that like the way to hack the system is to go super far.
- 13:57And a lot of times, I mean I've, I've killed 3 over the counter
- 14:01bulls in a row in an over the counter unit and all of them
- 14:05were not far from the road. Right.
- 14:07Sometimes I almost think people go past the.
- 14:09ELK, OH 100. Percent and I read I read an
- 14:11article a long time ago by Chuck Adams to you know, it was like
- 14:16an idol for me growing up. Best bow hunter of all time.
- 14:20But like, he wrote an article about guys routinely hiking past
- 14:28the elk and the elk will hang out closer to like, roads and
- 14:33walkways. And I've.
- 14:34I have found that to be true. Yeah.
- 14:36Where? In some case, not always, but
- 14:38often times, I don't think the elk are like.
- 14:40No. Let me go 15 miles from the road
- 14:43I think they think it in. Spots where like one of the guys
- 14:46from Texas killed a four by four and where he was at.
- 14:51I was like, yeah, this makes sense, you know what I mean?
- 14:53But like where I killed my bull and where Lane killed his cow.
- 14:57I mean, that pack out was 750 yards, Yeah.
- 15:01Like, yeah. It wasn't you would 100%
- 15:04overlook spot behind to get into the spot that you go up the
- 15:08mountain and it's kind of one of the first meadows you see and
- 15:11it's you know, there's a lot of camping activity and stuff like
- 15:14that down low on the mountain. But 1500 feet up off that
- 15:19there's more elk sign than I've ever seen.
- 15:20Wow, you know, and it's just 1500 foot up some straight stuff
- 15:24and deadfall. Nobody, wow, really wants to get
- 15:27back in there. Were you seeing elk pretty much
- 15:29every day? So in that spot where we're at
- 15:32is very hard to see elk in general at all because they it's
- 15:34so thick. Yeah.
- 15:35And so we had elk 60 yards from us at points, so you can see
- 15:39just bugle in their ears off, you know, and I, I, he couldn't
- 15:43ever guess if it was right on the other side of the Bush or
- 15:46like 60-70 years. I don't know it's.
- 15:48Just so tough depending. On the the sound travels so
- 15:51weird in there, there was 1 area where so when he Hunter is his
- 15:56name Hunter Evans killed that 4x4 and where we got down into
- 16:01him, they were locate calling in order to just make sure that
- 16:06like we knew what direction they were.
- 16:08We could hear them perfect. At that point where I was like,
- 16:11OK, we're close enough. I'm going to RIP some bugles and
- 16:13let them know. Like I was like, Calvary's
- 16:14coming, you know, like we're going to get this bull packed
- 16:16out. So I just grabbed the horn and I
- 16:18start ripping like 45 seconds of the loudest bugles.
- 16:20I absolutely could just crazy bugles.
- 16:23I get up there and they were like, yeah, we were wondering
- 16:25when you'd get here and Lane was like, did you hear him calling?
- 16:28Nothing, nothing. We were 200 yards away from him.
- 16:31Couldn't they couldn't hear us at all.
- 16:32We could hear them like they were.
- 16:34It sounded like they were 50. Yards.
- 16:35Isn't that something so wow. Just weird how that travels
- 16:38throughout the mountain. Dude, yeah, elk bugles can
- 16:41change a lot. Like sometimes they'll sound
- 16:44right on top of you and they're like a whole friggin cany in a
- 16:48wet. But it just depends, like how
- 16:50the echoes work in certain different areas.
- 16:52And yeah, we just went on a crazy elk on New Mexico for my
- 16:56dad, and fortunately he didn't. He did get one.
- 16:58But how long were you guys there?
- 17:00It was awesome. The whole season.
- 17:02So 10 it was 10 days season was 10 days and we were scouting for
- 17:05six and I mean we were covered up and out.
- 17:07We just we had one great opportunity the very first
- 17:12morning called in this really nice bull.
- 17:14I got beautiful footage. I'm hopping a fence right to us.
- 17:18I. Want to say I've seen?
- 17:19That it's a beautiful clip. So that bull stood there
- 17:24broadside at 65 and then jumped the fence and stood broadside at
- 17:2833. And my dad just wasn't able to
- 17:30get the bow back and get a shot off.
- 17:32And after that, like we are covered up in elk.
- 17:35We just never had a shot opportunity, if that makes
- 17:38sense. Like it wasn't like we were
- 17:39unsuccessfully. We weren't having problems
- 17:43finding elk or being near elk. We just couldn't get around off,
- 17:46you know, and eventually we put him on a wallow that we found.
- 17:50And I figured for sure, I'm like, did you sit this wallow
- 17:53for the last few days? Like something will come in and
- 17:56just did you know, it didn't pan out, but which hurts.
- 17:59Like my dad and I very rarely will go on a hunt and not fill
- 18:07the tack, you know? So for us, that was a tough one
- 18:09to swallow. But it was like never from a
- 18:12lack of effort or anything. It was just didn't pan out.
- 18:15Sometimes that's hunting. Oh, it's.
- 18:17You know what I mean? Well, yeah, and.
- 18:19You hunt a lot with your dad. Yeah, I have my whole life
- 18:22right. So we've done a ton together and
- 18:24but that was the first hunt where like a lot of times we'll
- 18:27apply as a party and now we don't do that.
- 18:30It's terrible for your odds in a lot of states.
- 18:32So we apply, everyone applies individually.
- 18:35And so he had attacks. It was all hands on deck for
- 18:38him. And the actual look, I mean, we
- 18:39made kind of a long hunt out of it.
- 18:41We went to Arizona 1st and and did a deer hunt.
- 18:45Ariana got a deer and then. Was that the Mulee?
- 18:48Yeah, she got a mulee and then my buddy Garrett got a Mulee and
- 18:51then we had several other people in the group had shots fed.
- 18:55Oh, couple farm shots in the green, but we were gone 35 days.
- 19:00Heck yeah, I did. 35 four day pull.
- 19:02Yeah. And I didn't have A tag the
- 19:04whole time, just that filming. Yeah, hanging out and helping.
- 19:07That's what I'm saying. I think, you know, for me
- 19:09personally, getting behind the camera is almost just as much
- 19:12fun, if not maybe more sometimes.
- 19:14I love filming, you know, I mean, I, I, I do, I do obviously
- 19:18like, love to. I would prefer to, you know,
- 19:21have A tag, but that's a split season, right?
- 19:23So I had already filled my tag in January on a Coos, a
- 19:26whitetail. So I didn't have A tag.
- 19:28And then and then of course, hell cunt, only my dad had A
- 19:32tag. But you know, I've also shot
- 19:37more stuff this year than probably ever.
- 19:39I've shot 9 things this year, which like when you're not
- 19:42hunting, it's a trip to me coming out like hunting Oklahoma
- 19:46or something because I'm like, I can fight 5 or 6 those in a day,
- 19:49you know, like, or whatever the laws are, be like, you can shoot
- 19:52a lot, stack bodies, and it's not the same like where I'm
- 19:55from, like you're lucky to get one or two things.
- 19:58Yeah. Oh yeah.
- 19:59So even though like my hunting season here is somewhat wrapped,
- 20:04it's crazy to have nine things that I've shot this year.
- 20:08And like you said, most hunting seasons, aren't you?
- 20:11Say, yeah, most people start stacking and remember, you know,
- 20:15like, yeah, when they start getting a lot of action, yeah,
- 20:19anyway. Do you enjoy Dope Patrol?
- 20:21Oh yeah, I love dope patrol. Yeah, you can't beat it.
- 20:24Yeah, I'm a big proponent for dope patrol.
- 20:27I haven't been I'm. I'm an opportunist, you know,
- 20:31like an opportunist where like, don't get me wrong, I if I know
- 20:35of a big buck that's in the area, I'll pass it to L for sure
- 20:37in order to wait for it. But I usually get my doe tags
- 20:41out of the out of the way early and try to kill one or two.
- 20:44And then I got Nebraska's a Tupac state.
- 20:47So, you know, I'll kind of try to be picky with one of them for
- 20:51sure. And, and anymore I kind of
- 20:53started being more picky with both of them at this point.
- 20:57It's, it's not that I've even, I've killed like I've killed a
- 21:00good buck that, you know, I say a good buck for me.
- 21:05Like I was, I shot him because it was the biggest buck I'd ever
- 21:09had in front of me, you know, so I say he's probably 120, you
- 21:14know, nothing, nothing crazy. We go.
- 21:16But it was, it was an opportunity that I, I wanted to
- 21:19fill my tag on. So I was happy with it.
- 21:21But then coming off the back of that and now that I'm like, OK,
- 21:26now I've like the the whole game of like, all right, you know,
- 21:29you've killed something that's maybe something similar to it
- 21:32like you always kind of grow with.
- 21:34That this one sure you know. And it's like, OK, you know,
- 21:36stuff I would have been passing for sure, you know, like, or
- 21:40stuff I, I wouldn't have shot, which is always fun because you
- 21:43get to see more deer. And, and anymore with the video
- 21:46stuff that I've been doing is like, I kind of like having him
- 21:50work in if I can and get as much video as possible.
- 21:53And then if I have an opportunity past that, that's
- 21:57great. I might consider that.
- 21:58But it's like, for me, it's like, if you can kill him on
- 22:02camera, that's as much fun for me as as having a, you know?
- 22:06It's a whole other challenge, whole other piece to the puzzle,
- 22:09you know? And how many dose can you shoot
- 22:12in Nebraska? So you can keep buying tags
- 22:15until they sell out, pretty much, I'm pretty sure, yeah.
- 22:18So I usually get to right off the bat, Yeah, like a sees its
- 22:21choice and their list I think was what they call them.
- 22:24And then I think you could pretty much.
- 22:27Feel so you can get like almost done one, yeah.
- 22:30I know I want to say there was one guy that killed 10 last.
- 22:34Oh wow, 10 in a year. And it was just had the area for
- 22:38it, you know, and it was just, you know, you needed the dough's
- 22:41gone. And he was like, this is the
- 22:44best way to do it, you know. Oh.
- 22:45Dude, it was so funny when I when I went out hunting with
- 22:49Badlands and last year in Oklahoma, it was so funny
- 22:53because, you know, all I've ever haunted is Western states my
- 22:58whole life, you know? So I go out there and we're
- 23:02like, where? Where as far as state.
- 23:05Oklahoma, Oklahoma. So I go out there and they're
- 23:08like, yeah, So you know, this is like your stand or whatever that
- 23:13we're going to put you at and you can shoot.
- 23:16I don't remember the exact numbers are like a buck and four
- 23:20dose. And I was like, I can shoot.
- 23:21What is what was that? They're like, yeah, you can
- 23:23shoot 4 dose. I'm like, OK, dude, I go out
- 23:29there and I was like, I just kept everyday thump and doze
- 23:33right? And they would come back and
- 23:34they're like, you know, you could shoot a buck.
- 23:36I was like, I'm not going to shoot a small buck.
- 23:38So like I'm have trust me, to me, it's a trip that I've just
- 23:41shot 3 doze, you know, like it's crazy.
- 23:44Like it blew my mind that that was an impossible.
- 23:47Thing I mean, you get so much experience with every shot you
- 23:50take. That.
- 23:51When you have the opportunity to shoot 3 doze in a couple of
- 23:55days, you get, I mean, for a lot of people that's like 3 years of
- 23:59experience, you know what I mean?
- 24:00If oh shoot 1 doe a year or something like that, you only
- 24:04have a certain amount of time. You can hunt things like that,
- 24:07which I mean it, everybody is. But it's, you know, when you get
- 24:12to have that experience and start stacking that, it's great
- 24:17knowledge. Oh man, I I think it's the best
- 24:21way to do anything like that. No, it's like learning a job.
- 24:24We talked about it the other day in the car.
- 24:25It's like so many times any education, like you can take a
- 24:30whole course on how to paint a house, but like until you
- 24:33actually go paint some houses, you're just not going to know
- 24:38how to paint a house really well, right.
- 24:39But you always learn better on the job.
- 24:41I do. I think everybody, I mean, for
- 24:43the most look at we got we got a shooter here.
- 24:46What a legend. Cool archery range.
- 24:49Yeah, yeah, this is a great spot.
- 24:51Just get a antelope. Yes, I did.
- 24:53Nice. Yeah.
- 24:53Off the backside of hunting, Colorado.
- 24:57I came home a day early, which is wild.
- 24:59So got forced off a mountain basically by having my stuff
- 25:02stolen right on the way back. On the way back, I'm driving
- 25:06through, actually, it's the town that you guys were talking about
- 25:08staying in all the way through. And then I stopped and pulled
- 25:13over and I had a couple text messages.
- 25:14I do flooring for a living. So I knew I had another job
- 25:17coming up, but I didn't know exactly what the deadline look
- 25:20like for. And so she got back to me on
- 25:23what she needed as a deadline. And as soon as I knew that it
- 25:26wasn't the next day that I needed it, then I was like,
- 25:29we're turning around, we're going out or going antelope
- 25:31hunting. And so I turned around and just
- 25:34for, I knew for like 1 morning I'd be able to get out and just
- 25:37have, you know, I'd haunted them early season.
- 25:40And so I knew where they were in the early season.
- 25:42And so I went in and I, I pulled over in a farm outlet that I
- 25:47have permission to and I just camped there.
- 25:49And then the next morning I knew I'd be close, you know, like,
- 25:54based on where I'd seen that I was hunting a fuck.
- 25:56I was called Papa Joe. And so I give him all dumb
- 26:01nicknames, but this, there's two of them that I was calling Slim
- 26:05Jim was another one that I really, he's just real
- 26:07Hightower, you know, he just looked like that Slim Jim guy.
- 26:11But Papa Joe was one of them that I really wanted to get on
- 26:15to. And I ended up, I get up and it
- 26:19was like maybe 5:45. I kind of stumble around, get
- 26:24dressed, and then I got on the road and where we hunt Pantalope
- 26:29is basically you drive roads until you see it.
- 26:31Go ahead and make a play, you know and so.
- 26:34It's like nonstop stalking is. Never on Yeah, I'd like to take
- 26:39you out there so we should I will ask I would love to do is.
- 26:42So over the counter. Yep.
- 26:44I think now that I say that you might, you might have to double
- 26:47check on that. I'm not sure for refs.
- 26:49I know Joel's talking. I think it is a draw, but I
- 26:51think it's. Easy.
- 26:52Probably draw if you put in, yeah.
- 26:55So yeah, ended up driving about 5 minutes down the road and the
- 27:00first group of antelope I've seen, there's three of them, two
- 27:03doughs in that buck. And I kind of, you know, did one
- 27:05of these with the knee and was like glassing on them, like
- 27:09slowed down enough to where I could like glass to him and seen
- 27:12that it was one of the bucks that I was chasing.
- 27:14And so I just kept driving. You know, if you slow down with
- 27:18antelope most any game, but like if you slow down with antelope,
- 27:21they're gone. They're gone, you know, And so
- 27:24I'm watching my rearview mirror as I'm coming up over the hill
- 27:27and I'm, I see you exactly where I went outside of where they
- 27:30could see. And I just pulled over and I
- 27:33jumped into the ditch and I ran about 40 yards into the ditch
- 27:35and they cut about 40 yards into the field.
- 27:38And there was a little rise where they were coming up over
- 27:40and it was enough to where I thought I was going to be able
- 27:44to get up over them and just like shoot them, you know.
- 27:47But I got up to the top and I could see them like they were
- 27:50already working close enough to where I just backed off that
- 27:53Ridge. I backed off the Ridge maybe 40
- 27:56yards and, and where they were at, they just fed right up over
- 27:59the top. I've got my camera in my hands
- 28:02and I'm just like taking pictures of them And as soon as
- 28:05he comes up over the hill, like I take a couple really good
- 28:08pictures of him. Best picture of an antelope I've
- 28:10ever taken it. Like I, I think I saw that alone
- 28:12or wise. It is one of my favorite
- 28:14pictures. I'm going to have a canvas and
- 28:15like I'm going to make it like super nice.
- 28:17But I snapped a couple pictures and at this point I'm like for
- 28:21sure, based on everything that I've, I mean, this is my fourth
- 28:24year antelope hunting. Antelope are curious sometimes
- 28:28and you can use that to your advantage if you get inside of
- 28:31their like 300 yard bubble and you've gotten there without them
- 28:35seeing you get there. I feel like they're more curious
- 28:38and they are scared sometimes. And he's looking right at me and
- 28:43I snapped this picture and I'm like, OK, here's the point where
- 28:45you like turn around and take off.
- 28:47You know, I'm kind of like looking at my bow, looking at
- 28:49like trying to like maybe try to make a play.
- 28:52And as soon as I take this picture, he's like looks at his
- 28:55dose and he kind of looks back at me and he just starts feeding
- 28:58again. And I'm like, OK, you don't
- 29:00like, don't you fool me once, You know what I mean?
- 29:03Like I'm going to take a picture of you.
- 29:04That's fine. And then as soon as you give me
- 29:06an opportunity, like it was, I was on my bow and I pulled back
- 29:10and I ranged the top of the hill at 40 yards earlier, but I
- 29:14backed out a little bit. So when they came up over the
- 29:17hill, I think he was maybe at 45 or something like that.
- 29:20But I shot him for 40 thinking it was, you know, center vitals,
- 29:25a little bit room for error. And yeah, I ended up pulling my
- 29:30bow back and as soon as I pulled my bow back, he kind of went
- 29:33broadside and was like, you know, what's going on, you know,
- 29:35And as soon as I got, I remember did my pen was like tail to
- 29:39nose, you know, it's just like sitting there for a second.
- 29:42And I remember thinking like, all right, they push into your
- 29:45bow arm, you know, settle that pen.
- 29:47So I gave it a little bit pressure towards that target and
- 29:50I just settled in. And as that release popped off,
- 29:53I just like it drifted in like you always wanted to, you know
- 29:57what I mean? It just slide and I, you hear it
- 30:00hit him and you never know, you know what I mean?
- 30:02Sometimes it's like, was it lungs or was it bone?
- 30:05Sometimes they almost sound the same.
- 30:07Yeah, they if you hit that shoulder, but it slid in and it
- 30:10didn't make a lot of noise. And I just felt like I'd gotten
- 30:12him behind that shoulder and I was just like instantly right
- 30:16away, like any of the antelope I've killed before.
- 30:18I'm like on the glass, like looking at him, making sure like
- 30:20where was the shot? Can I see anything about him?
- 30:22How far they going, dude? I just like at that point after
- 30:2516 days in Colorado and getting my stuff stolen, dude, I didn't
- 30:29have any energy. I just like turned around and
- 30:31started crying. It was like just like straight
- 30:34up like I was just thanking God and I was just like, there's
- 30:37like no way that that just happened, you know what I mean?
- 30:40Like to spend all that time getting my butt kicked in in
- 30:43Colorado and then, you know, on a last ditch effort to try to
- 30:47fill the antelope first day, first day, first stock, getting
- 30:50it done like that. I I mean, I can say safely that
- 30:53that will never happen again. You know, it's just one of those
- 30:56things that I, you know, everybody you know, has has
- 31:00their own idea of whether it's like, you know, spiritual or
- 31:03like is it a God thing is it just happens to had to be.
- 31:06I felt like in that moment I was just like, after getting to
- 31:11spend time on the mountain for me is just spiritually like I
- 31:14just, I'm a religious guy. So I'm pretty and I just, I'm, I
- 31:17get into with my feels about it and I'm like, man, like this is
- 31:20what we're supposed to be doing. You know, this is like what
- 31:22we're called to do. And so I had a ton of time to
- 31:26pray on the mountain. And it was just like one of
- 31:28those things that when I got my stuff stolen, one of my first
- 31:32reactions was to just pray for them too, because I was just
- 31:34like, man, how lost are some people that that that's like
- 31:38what they're going to do today is they probably stole my stuff
- 31:40and they probably had five other spots that they hit that they
- 31:43had, you know, but you know, through the whole process, just
- 31:48trusting God. And I was just, I felt like, I
- 31:52mean, I, I don't know, you know, you, you have things happen out
- 31:54like, like a movie. Yeah.
- 31:56I mean, it's like, it felt like, yeah, literally.
- 31:58I mean, there was no way what a story, anything like that could
- 32:01ever happen. And it's hunting, man.
- 32:04You just never know. You got to put in, you know, the
- 32:06time and it, you got to be kind of headstrong and a little bit
- 32:10stupid because like I say, I drove 2 hours back out of my way
- 32:14basically in order to hunt that animal for, for a few hours, you
- 32:17know, but I didn't know they were going to be there.
- 32:20I didn't know anything was going to be.
- 32:21I just was like, screw it, you know it.
- 32:23Panned out, I mean. Try to go get some video or
- 32:25something. It really was cool to kind of, I
- 32:28mean, obviously it wasn't cool to see your stuff get stolen.
- 32:34I didn't even know about it. So like Brianna and Scott were
- 32:38like, yo, dude, they were like talking about did you guys see
- 32:42Ethan got his stuff stolen? I was like, now I didn't see
- 32:46that. So like I went and watched it
- 32:48and low key, like Scott said, hilarious part.
- 32:53My targets going to be gone. I guarantee you it's a hilarious
- 32:57time. That was you got to post that as
- 32:59a real. That was so funny.
- 33:01But like, yeah, just the whole saga, right of that and you
- 33:06somehow making a hilarious reaction in some ways.
- 33:10But then like that you being like sad and mad and then having
- 33:15like a hilarious line, but then like ended up getting antelope.
- 33:19It was just really cool to kind of like see the whole thing
- 33:23play. It was really cool and and in
- 33:26real time, which is which is cool.
- 33:28You know, we talk about it often, you know, the pros and
- 33:30cons of social media. But like, I think there's just
- 33:34as many pros as there is cons. And like, one of the pros is for
- 33:38you to sort of have people supporting you.
- 33:42I'm good, man. That really sucks.
- 33:43Go get them like people supporting.
- 33:45But then also for us, the people watching the story unfold in
- 33:51real time is really cool. No, yeah, it's.
- 33:53Really cool. So I don't know, I think yeah,
- 33:57the whole thing was crazy. And obviously that's a bummer.
- 33:59Maybe. Maybe you'll get a cooler
- 34:02sponsor, you know? Yeah, get some igloo sponsor,
- 34:06give me a Yeti sponsorship or something.
- 34:08Yeah, I am thankful that you know the stuff that I had none
- 34:11of it. I mean, All in all, I think they
- 34:13probably got away with about $1000 worth of stuff, which it
- 34:17sucks, but when you consider. Your cameras were there.
- 34:20I had my laptop and my camera in my bow, you know, and if, who
- 34:24knows what type of people they were, maybe if they saw my
- 34:26vehicle there, they wouldn't have stopped.
- 34:27Maybe they would have stopped. So, you know, I'm happy that I
- 34:31wasn't there when it happened. It is if I was out taking
- 34:33pictures and they saw a nice lens and a camera.
- 34:35They probably want that to you. Know just Oh yeah yeah and.
- 34:40Yeah, it's a it's an interesting world we live in, but I feel
- 34:45like hunting is one of those things and and social media too
- 34:48is is it plays into it where it's like, you know, getting to
- 34:52be here with you guys. Obviously, you know, you guys
- 34:55are kind of making a tour right now going through stopping at a
- 34:58couple places as you had to pick up the sick truck of his.
- 35:01But yeah. But to just be able to have
- 35:04direction and have some something an outlet to, you
- 35:09know, have a plan to go out to Colorado and and make content of
- 35:13some kind, whether I ever end up posting it or not.
- 35:15It's just fun to have in general to look back and as a memory
- 35:20that and it, it, it sucks too because I, I feel like I am, I,
- 35:23I do a lot of it where it's like, oh dude, I've got 2
- 35:26terabytes of footage and I posted like 6 pictures from it,
- 35:29you know what I mean? So I need to do a better job of
- 35:31keeping everybody updated with things like.
- 35:34Getting stuff. Yeah, getting stuff out there,
- 35:36which was definitely one of my bottlenecks.
- 35:39Right now it's just. I always say that, yeah.
- 35:43I mean, I always say that I think if for like aspiring
- 35:49content creators, I always say the biggest, the, the most
- 35:53common mistake I see people make is lack of output is always
- 36:02number one. I think a lot of people are
- 36:06like, oh, I can't put something out if it's not perfect.
- 36:09And it's like, and what is it? One of my favorites?
- 36:12Paralysis by analysis, right? I see people do it all the time,
- 36:16not pump stuff out. And I meanwhile, like for us,
- 36:20I've always been output has to be first, output has to be
- 36:25first. And some of the best stuff we've
- 36:28done ever has been like, I don't know, just like some Lucy that
- 36:33we did. And it's like bangs crazy.
- 36:36Well, sometimes I. Relate to that content?
- 36:38Yeah, that's when you over produce.
- 36:39Off the hip stuff is sometimes the best.
- 36:42Over produce and overthink things.
- 36:44You leave stuff out that you might not think in the moment is
- 36:48relatable or is is like that archery thing where you know,
- 36:51like in that moment, like until you guys told me like, I didn't
- 36:54think that was even of of like a funny moment of just like, Oh
- 36:58yeah. And for sure they just The
- 36:59Archers. Yeah, it's hilarious, like the
- 37:01timing, but. The timing you like you say.
- 37:03It's a viral. It's one of those things that if
- 37:05you, if you start spending more time editing things, you're
- 37:07editing things that other people might want to watch and you, you
- 37:11put them, you know, if you take it off the cutting table, then
- 37:14it's gone forever. And and so having more like you
- 37:17say, cut from hip, you know, just lose content.
- 37:19And I do love like really sitting down and like editing
- 37:23out like a like a a film. I'm not.
- 37:26Oh, cinematic stuff is one of my favorite stuff to do.
- 37:28Like I, I love it and I don't make stuff that's like as
- 37:31cinematic as what you do. But like, sometimes I'll have
- 37:33like an idea, you know, for like a hunt and I'll go, OK, if I can
- 37:37pull this off, then I'll call the video this and the storyline
- 37:40could kind of be this and it kind of be cool.
- 37:42And I'll really spend time on those like do sound and like
- 37:46really change stuff up. And I love that too.
- 37:49And I, but I, I, that is probably 5% of our stuff.
- 37:55A lot of it's very like just off the hip, off the rails, kind of
- 38:00chaotic, you know. And I think for, like, for, for
- 38:05us, when we linked up for the first time in Oklahoma, it was
- 38:09your first time ever hanging with us and vice versa.
- 38:13But I think for you, it was probably kind of like a
- 38:15different style of filming than you had probably come before.
- 38:19Yeah. Probably like this is like,
- 38:20feels like we're not really filming, you know, like.
- 38:22No, but it's the camcorder that makes things so seamless,
- 38:26accessible and when you don't have to worry about like I mean
- 38:30obviously I like what I do with my R5 and stuff like that, but
- 38:33I'm considering just grabbing one of these cuz it's like.
- 38:36It's good to have. Both.
- 38:37I think so too, yeah. I think for the cinematic shots
- 38:40and stuff like that, having the really nice lens and stuff,
- 38:43yeah, you get depth of field, yeah, SLR to get bangers off of
- 38:47it. But where it comes down to
- 38:50there's a lot of stuff that dude even just like running the focus
- 38:55on my camera sometimes. Is hard.
- 38:57Is. A job in itself to order to make
- 38:59sure that you're not only framing the animal perfect, but
- 39:02you're in focus between all this trash that you have between all
- 39:06the lens. Not to mention so many settings
- 39:08you're trying to go through and then 100%.
- 39:10So I do have a DSLR and a lens that I really like on it a lot.
- 39:16But and I have I used to have two of these one just broke.
- 39:19So I need to get another camcorder.
- 39:20So I'm going to get I'm going to get a different type of
- 39:22camcorder, I think, or maybe the same one.
- 39:24I'm going to look at options and get another camcorder.
- 39:27But what I really realized was we were on the deer hunt and
- 39:31Brianna was hunting with my dad and I was hunting with somebody
- 39:35else. And I said in my other camera
- 39:38was already spoke my other camper after if I can move 10
- 39:41years and rainstorms and dust, but drop it in life.
- 39:44Oh, it's made. Oh dude, yeah, it's a banger
- 39:47right, But I I was like, you take that at all.
- 39:50I'll take the DSLR, bro. I'm trying to film like hunting
- 39:53and over the shoulder stuff and on the animal with the DSLR.
- 39:57I'm like, this is trash, bro. I'm like so many people probably
- 40:00miss banger shots because this camera's too complex for.
- 40:05You need to be able to zoom in quick on the animal type and at
- 40:10the camcorder it's so quick and easy.
- 40:13So for me, the way I always look at it and some guys can pull it
- 40:17off well filming with the DSLR for that.
- 40:19But what I prefer is for outdoor stuff, so like tax hunt, stuff
- 40:25like that. I think camcorders like
- 40:27undefeated but for indoor stuff or reviews or like a bow build,
- 40:34sure. Stuff that's more intricate.
- 40:35Yeah, where you want to see exactly what you know.
- 40:38That's where I love doing it. And things like that.
- 40:40Yeah, that's where I love the DSLR.
- 40:42And then also of course for photos for sponsors and stuff,
- 40:45that for the DSLR is key. So I think like as a creator,
- 40:48it's great to have both things. So for sure, you know, and I
- 40:52think like for a lot of what you do too, like filming out of
- 40:55trees and and now that you're like, I think for your outcome,
- 40:58dude, a camera like this would be perfect.
- 41:00I know. And I think for tree stands
- 41:01actually because it's so light in the zoom.
- 41:05Dude. Oh yeah.
- 41:06So and it does really good in in low light situation area like
- 41:09where you know that was a struggle for me getting into
- 41:12DSLRs right away. It was like, OK, so your F stop
- 41:16your aperture is basically control how much light you get
- 41:20into the camera. Well, the 2.8 is kind of like
- 41:24the standard any anymore like if you're shooting anything hunting
- 41:28related where you're going to be dusk and dawn, like 2.8 is going
- 41:32to allow allow enough light in there while a 2.8mm you know,
- 41:38300mm. So you can like reach out there
- 41:40and let's say it is 70 yards. Like I mean you're talking
- 41:43about, you know, a 300 millimeter 2.8 is going to be an
- 41:458000 mile. So heavy.
- 41:48Absolutely, dude. I got a 24 to one O 5 that I
- 41:52run. That's 2.8 and it allows me to
- 41:55get the shots that I need. But it is one of those things
- 41:57that, I mean, it's heavy, it's on my shoulders all the time,
- 42:01and there's plenty of time where I'd rather just be, you know,
- 42:05I'll even do it with my cell phone sometimes instead.
- 42:07Phones are. Good.
- 42:08Yeah, instead of my camera just doing the blocked stuff of
- 42:11trying to fill in, OK, this is what we're doing on the front,
- 42:14this is the spot we're in updating things and then doing
- 42:17the panoramic shots with. The transition clear, Yeah, I
- 42:21mean, I think durability is another big key point too.
- 42:25I think about it like this a lot.
- 42:28So for hunting, a lot of times, I mean, obviously you're
- 42:31outdoors and outdoors is rough on stuff, dust, dirt, water, you
- 42:36name it. And like, if by chance I was on
- 42:40a hunt and broke one of these cameras, it's $1000, right?
- 42:44You know what I mean? It's like, it's not sucks.
- 42:46It sucks, right? But it's $1000.
- 42:48Yeah. But if you smoke a lens and your
- 42:50body a whole deal, like, dude, you could be really cooked.
- 42:53Oh, absolutely. So I like that too.
- 42:55And then the durability. I mean, I literally in Hawaii
- 42:58dropped this camera off a Cliff and it was fine.
- 43:01The mic broke, but the camera was fine.
- 43:04So I like the durability and. And but yeah, and I think I
- 43:10think that was a good part. I think we're going to wrap it.
- 43:12I think we're going to wrap it and get on the road, dude.
