• 1:45
Speaker 3: winter storm Blair. Now you knew it was coming, by golly,
• 1:48
Speaker 3: it's here. We've had snow, freezing rain, sleeked, just plain
• 1:54
Speaker 3: old rain, ice, and now they tell us more snow
• 1:57
Speaker 3: is on the way. I will say this, if you
• 1:59
Speaker 3: do not have to be on the road today and
• 2:02
Speaker 3: probably tomorrow, don't be there because right now and here
• 2:08
Speaker 3: in the Charleston area we've had a little bit of
• 2:09
Speaker 3: a lull in things been kind of quiet, but that's
• 2:12
Speaker 3: about the change in the next hour or two, as
• 2:15
Speaker 3: we're gonna have more snow. So we've had as well
• 2:17
Speaker 3: as you know, we had the snow, and then late
• 2:19
Speaker 3: last night the freezing rain of a sleet rain in
• 2:22
Speaker 3: certain areas washed away a little bit of the snow,
• 2:25
Speaker 3: but then freezing rain. Now we're gonna add in the
• 2:27
Speaker 3: depend on where you live, another one to three inches
• 2:29
Speaker 3: of snow on top of that. So if your driveway
• 2:33
Speaker 3: and your your walkway near where you live happened to
• 2:37
Speaker 3: be cleared, if you went out there and you shoveled it,
• 2:39
Speaker 3: good on you for doing that. But you're gonna get
• 2:41
Speaker 3: to do it all again here in a couple of hours.
• 2:44
Speaker 3: So we're going to talk a lot about the weather.
• 2:46
Speaker 3: As you may imagine. Of course, the city of Charleston,
• 2:48
Speaker 3: the most of the not only the city of Charleston,
• 2:52
Speaker 3: but the government offices are closed. The governor's issued a
• 2:55
Speaker 3: state of emergency for the state of West Virginia. If
• 2:58
Speaker 3: you've got an appointment somewhere to day, ninety nine percent
• 3:02
Speaker 3: chance it's been canceled. I don't know. You may want
• 3:04
Speaker 3: to call ahead just before you go, so we're gonna.
• 3:06
Speaker 5: Have Charleston may or maybe you should a good book
• 3:08
Speaker 5: on the show. Come up a little bit later on.
• 3:11
Speaker 5: She is scarpus to be here anyway, so I talk
• 3:13
Speaker 5: to her about the weather. We'll also talk to her
• 3:14
Speaker 5: about some other things that are going on as well.
• 3:18
Speaker 3: Of course, Charlston City Council scheduled to meet tonight. We'll
• 3:20
Speaker 3: get the status of that from her coming up a
• 3:22
Speaker 3: little bit later on. Today is also the dawning of
• 3:25
Speaker 3: a new era in the world of WVRC Media and
• 3:28
Speaker 3: Metro News. As a hoppy kerchival heads off into retirement.
• 3:31
Speaker 3: Dave Wilson and TJ. Meadows will take over one half
• 3:34
Speaker 3: of that duo. TJ Meadows, my new officemate, is here
• 3:37
Speaker 3: in the building. We'll talk to him about what we
• 3:39
Speaker 3: can expect on talk Line today. Plus back to the
• 3:41
Speaker 3: Weather Media. Rileig is Brian Hughes from Storm Tracker thirteen.
• 3:43
Speaker 3: For the third consecutive day we'll be on the show.
• 3:47
Speaker 3: We are going to take a little bit of a
• 3:48
Speaker 3: break from the weather though, just for a moment, and
• 3:52
Speaker 3: I think we could stand to get our collective minds
• 3:54
Speaker 3: off the weather for a moment. There is a new
• 3:56
Speaker 3: film out that from what I am told, will will
• 4:00
Speaker 3: really and sadly hit home for those of us who
• 4:03
Speaker 3: live through the pill scourge here in Appalachia. The film
• 4:07
Speaker 3: is called Hazard, and we originally had like an entire
• 4:11
Speaker 3: crew of people scheduled to be here, the actors and
• 4:14
Speaker 3: so on and so forth. Unfortunately, flying right now from
• 4:17
Speaker 3: California and then I think into Chicago into West Virginia
• 4:20
Speaker 3: not very conducive with his weather. So we do have
• 4:23
Speaker 3: Eddie Menzer, who directed and wrote the screenplays. He's here
• 4:27
Speaker 3: right now, Eddie, Good morning, welcome to the show.
• 4:28
Speaker 6: Good morning, Thank you for having me.
• 4:30
Speaker 3: And thank you for being the guy who actually could
• 4:32
Speaker 3: be here today because the rest of them are probably
• 4:34
  Speaker 3: are they are?
• 4:34
  Speaker 2: They?
• 4:35
Speaker 3: Are they in California right now?
• 4:36
Speaker 6: Yeah, they're in California. I had the ability of walking
• 4:39
  Speaker 6: from the embassy.
• 4:41
Speaker 3: Now, you're a native West Virginia though, yes, sir, give
• 4:44
Speaker 3: us some of your background about who you are, what
• 4:47
Speaker 3: you've done in the past, and about where are you
• 4:48
Speaker 3: from in West Virginia.
• 4:49
Speaker 6: I'm originally from a small town in New Martinsville, West Virginia,
• 4:53
Speaker 6: the northern panhandle in the state. Currently live in Atlanta, Georgia,
• 4:58
Speaker 6: and I love telling Balachian stories.
• 5:02
Speaker 3: And you've done these sorts of projects in the past.
• 5:04
Speaker 3: Talk about some of the other projects you've done.
• 5:06
Speaker 6: Yes, Or My previous film was called Mine nine. It
• 5:09
Speaker 6: was a coal mine disaster movie that came out in
• 5:12
Speaker 6: twenty nineteen, and we did the same path. We opened
• 5:14
Speaker 6: an Appalachia then expanded to the coast, and that's what
• 5:18
Speaker 6: we're gonna do with this one, all these Appalachian stories.
• 5:22
Speaker 6: If you're going to tell stories about the region, it's
• 5:24
Speaker 6: really great to open them in the region so the
• 5:27
Speaker 6: people can be the judge and the jury, and then
• 5:29
Speaker 6: we can expand out to New York, LA and beyond.
• 5:33
Speaker 3: And you being from here, you know, it kind of
• 5:36
Speaker 3: gives it a little bit of extra because you know,
• 5:38
Speaker 3: anybody could tell a story, but you know this area,
• 5:41
Speaker 3: you know the people, you know West Virginia and on
• 5:43
Speaker 3: on into Kentucky and so on and so forth, So
• 5:46
Speaker 3: who better to tell the story?
• 5:47
  Speaker 7: Yes?
• 5:48
Speaker 6: Or all my stories that are come from a really
• 5:50
Speaker 6: personal point of view of some like life that I've
• 5:53
Speaker 6: experienced or loved ones that have experienced it.
• 5:56
Speaker 3: How did you get into filmmaking to begin with? That's
• 5:58
Speaker 3: the one question I always want to ask people any
• 6:00
Speaker 3: career path that's a little bit different. What was it
• 6:02
Speaker 3: that made you want to do this? Not the project,
• 6:05
Speaker 3: but I mean filmmaking in general.
• 6:07
Speaker 6: I was at West Virginia University and I took an
• 6:10
Speaker 6: advertising class and Professor Shai was my teacher, and he said,
• 6:15
Speaker 6: you're not writing ads, you're writing short films and told
• 6:19
Speaker 6: me about a film camp that I should go to
• 6:21
Speaker 6: and experience. And I loved it and I got hooked.
• 6:24
Speaker 6: But it was a West Virginia University, good old WVU.
• 6:28
Speaker 3: Now I have a trailer for the film posted on
• 6:31
Speaker 3: my social media. It's on Dave Island Radio on Facebook.
• 6:33
Speaker 3: So if you get a chance, go and check it out,
• 6:36
Speaker 3: as I did last week. When you're when your folks
• 6:37
Speaker 3: reached out to me about having you on the show,
• 6:41
Speaker 3: I will say the the lead actor in this story, now,
• 6:45
Speaker 3: he's a British guy, right, Yes, sir, he nailed the
• 6:47
Speaker 3: Appalachian accent, he really did.
• 6:50
Speaker 6: He came here one month in advance. We filmed in Harlan, Kentucky,
• 6:55
Speaker 6: and he came a one month in advance and learned
• 6:58
Speaker 6: the dialect and went to a lot of recovery meetings
• 7:01
Speaker 6: and a lot of people in recovery helped us make
• 7:03
Speaker 6: the movie, so he really engulfed himself into the environment.
• 7:07
Speaker 3: Tell us the synopsis of the movie. What's it about.
• 7:10
Speaker 6: It's about a young couple who are both going through addiction,
• 7:14
Speaker 6: and it's really just a story about love. It's what
• 7:17
Speaker 6: your parents have to deal with, Like they have a
• 7:19
Speaker 6: child of their own. His father's also on drugs and
• 7:24
Speaker 6: he's been kicked out of his south. So it's just
• 7:26
Speaker 6: that messed up, messy family dynamic of addiction.
• 7:31
Speaker 3: And so many of us from this part of the
• 7:33
Speaker 3: world can certainly can relate to that, and particularly when
• 7:37
Speaker 3: you get into areas like down into Kentucky and so
• 7:40
Speaker 3: on and so forth, because the people that found themselves
• 7:43
Speaker 3: back in the day, many of them who found themselves
• 7:45
Speaker 3: addicted to various whether it's oxy conton or whatever the
• 7:48
Speaker 3: case may be. I don't know about this particular film,
• 7:50
Speaker 3: but many of them started out with legitimate reasons to
• 7:54
Speaker 3: have said medications, you know, an injury work because we
• 7:58
Speaker 3: work our rear ends off in this part of the world,
• 8:00
Speaker 3: and it's strenuous work, whether it's in the coal mines
• 8:02
Speaker 3: or whether it's in the chemical plants or whatever, and
• 8:05
Speaker 3: it lends itself to injuries and in many cases, this
• 8:08
Speaker 3: is where some of this addiction came from.
• 8:11
Speaker 6: Yes, sir, And that's a prominent storyline in the movie
• 8:15
Speaker 6: is the father was a coal miner who got prescribed.
• 8:18
Speaker 6: But what we try to do is not talk about
• 8:21
Speaker 6: the pharmaceutical companies. We only try to talk about like
• 8:24
Speaker 6: what us Appalachians see in front of our face. So
• 8:27
Speaker 6: we don't know anything about the pharmaceutical companies or the
• 8:30
Speaker 6: sales reps or anything more, just about what do we
• 8:34
Speaker 6: see in front of our face from the people being
• 8:36
  Speaker 6: prescribed to medicine.
• 8:38
Speaker 3: Well, it's a fascinating tale. And again it's somebody who
• 8:42
Speaker 3: spend a lot of time. I mean it obviously it
• 8:45
Speaker 3: affected the Charleston aary too. But I'm a southern West
• 8:47
Speaker 3: Virginia guy, and my father worked for many, many years
• 8:50
Speaker 3: in the coal mines in Kentucky and we certainly saw
• 8:53
Speaker 3: a lot of that there. And unfortunately, you know, the
• 8:57
Speaker 3: pill issue seems to have gotten a lot better. However,
• 9:00
Speaker 3: when you take away that addiction, many people just trade
• 9:04
Speaker 3: it for other addictions.
• 9:06
Speaker 6: That's the problem with it. Like once somebody, you know,
• 9:10
Speaker 6: Purdue Far like some of these opioid companies like they
• 9:13
Speaker 6: targeted Appalachia because of lower economic work related injuries, so
• 9:18
Speaker 6: we were like a prime target for them. So once
• 9:20
Speaker 6: somebody is addicted, it's they're always going to try to
• 9:22
Speaker 6: replace it with something else, even though they can pull
• 9:25
Speaker 6: the pills away, but they got to find something.
• 9:27
Speaker 3: Talk about the filming of the of the of the
• 9:31
Speaker 3: picture where you said was in Harlan, Kentucky. Is that right?
• 9:34
  Speaker 8: Or yes?
• 9:35
Speaker 3: But you filmed in some other places as well as that, right?
• 9:37
Speaker 3: Or was it all in Harlan.
• 9:38
Speaker 6: Now we filmed all in the tri city area of
• 9:40
Speaker 6: Harlan of Harland County, a little town called Cumberland. But
• 9:45
Speaker 6: we filmed fifteen days in July of twenty twenty two.
• 9:49
Speaker 3: Okay, what was the reception like from the town when
• 9:53
Speaker 3: you folks rolled into town.
• 9:54
Speaker 6: So, being in Appalachian, I knew how to handle this.
• 9:57
Speaker 6: I started going to Harlan and January of that year,
• 10:01
Speaker 6: and it took me from January to about May for
• 10:04
Speaker 6: the community to trust me. And once they trusted me,
• 10:08
Speaker 6: we filmed in July. That's when, like between May and July,
• 10:12
Speaker 6: all the cast and crews started to come in and
• 10:15
Speaker 6: the community opened their hearts up to us, Like from
• 10:18
Speaker 6: the police to the mayor to you name it. The
• 10:22
Speaker 6: people of Harlan County open their hearts up.
• 10:25
Speaker 3: And I think sometimes again, you hit the nail on
• 10:27
Speaker 3: the head, Eddie. You being an Appalachian, you can speak
• 10:31
Speaker 3: the language, you can put your arm around him and no, look,
• 10:33
Speaker 3: here's what we're doing here. Because so many times people
• 10:36
Speaker 3: and this is not unique to Appalachia. It happens in
• 10:40
Speaker 3: other areas too. People come in big out of town
• 10:42
Speaker 3: folks to tell the story of Appalachia, or they going
• 10:45
Speaker 3: to tell the story of an inner city in Los Angeles,
• 10:47
Speaker 3: or whatever the case may be. They don't speak the language,
• 10:51
Speaker 3: they don't know how to relate to people. And I
• 10:54
Speaker 3: think sometimes we tend to be in this part of
• 10:56
Speaker 3: the world a little bit fearful about someone else telling
• 10:59
Speaker 3: our stories. But it sounds like you were able to
• 11:01
Speaker 3: gain the trust of the community in order to tell
• 11:03
Speaker 3: what was a very real story.
• 11:05
Speaker 6: Absolutely, I knew that that was the first thing I
• 11:07
Speaker 6: had to do, Like, if the community doesn't trust me,
• 11:09
Speaker 6: then we're not going to accomplish what we're there to do.
• 11:13
Speaker 3: Now, you had a series of events planned, like I said,
• 11:18
Speaker 3: we had the actors planned to be here. You got
• 11:19
Speaker 3: to town a little bit early. You actually walked here
• 11:22
Speaker 3: this morning from the Embassy suites because of the situation
• 11:25
Speaker 3: I think with the parking there. So we appreciate your dedication.
• 11:29
Speaker 3: What kind of other things once this weather breaks, do
• 11:31
Speaker 3: you have planned to get this out to talk to
• 11:34
Speaker 3: people and do in new screenings and whatnot.
• 11:36
Speaker 6: Yeah, So we open in theaters on January the tenth
• 11:39
Speaker 6: all over, so please check us out from that standpoint.
• 11:44
Speaker 6: But on the eighth, we're going to be in Harlan,
• 11:46
Speaker 6: Kentucky doing a community screening, and then we're going to
• 11:49
Speaker 6: go into Hazzard, Kentucky to do a community screening in
• 11:51
Speaker 6: the ninth. Then on the tenth we're going to do
• 11:53
Speaker 6: a premiere in Louisville, Kentucky. And then after the tenth,
• 11:57
Speaker 6: eleventh through the fourteenth, I'm backtracking to come back here
• 12:01
Speaker 6: to West Virginia to pick up everything that we never
• 12:03
Speaker 6: got to do now and uh.
• 12:06
Speaker 3: So, as I said, the trailer for the for the movie,
• 12:09
Speaker 3: which is absolutely fantastic. I when when your folks sent
• 12:12
Speaker 3: it to me, I showed it to the people I
• 12:14
Speaker 3: was sharing office with upstairs, and they were all gathered
• 12:16
Speaker 3: around like people like, wow, this is this looks like
• 12:18
Speaker 3: it's really really good stuff. And and once you get
• 12:22
Speaker 3: through all the initial screenings and so on and so forth,
• 12:24
Speaker 3: where will people be able to see the.
• 12:26
Speaker 6: Movie all over Appalachia. If you go to www. Dot
• 12:31
Speaker 6: hazard themovie dot com, you can see all of our
• 12:35
Speaker 6: locations we're playing at. So we're all throughout West Virginia, Kentucky. Uh,
• 12:40
Speaker 6: we'll be in branching out into Tennessee, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and
• 12:43
Speaker 6: then we're going to go out to the cities.
• 12:45
Speaker 3: And this is and this is a story again that
• 12:47
Speaker 3: even though it's set down in that part of Kentucky,
• 12:50
Speaker 3: we can all certainly relate to Eddie. I appreciate you
• 12:53
Speaker 3: being under under difficult circumstances, as I told you off
• 12:56
Speaker 3: the air, when you plan things as you well know.
• 12:58
Speaker 3: In Appalachia in January this time, a couple of weeks ago,
• 13:00
Speaker 3: we had temperatures on the six season and low seventies
• 13:03
Speaker 3: and we were battling windstorms. Now it's been snow and ice.
• 13:05
Speaker 3: You never know what you're gonna get with Mountain Mama.
• 13:08
  Speaker 2: Gotta love it.
• 13:09
Speaker 3: You gotta love that. I appreciate you being here, man.
• 13:10
Speaker 3: Thanks lot, hang out with me here one second, the
• 13:13
Speaker 3: Dave Allan showing five Ady Live is brought to you
• 13:14
Speaker 3: parted by Morgan and Morgan, America's largest injury law firm.
• 13:17
Speaker 3: We're going to take a break. When we come back
• 13:18
Speaker 3: a little bit later on Charleston mere Amy Schuler Goodwin,
• 13:21
Speaker 3: we'll be here to talk about the weather and some
• 13:23
Speaker 3: other thing. Believe or not, there are other things in
• 13:25
Speaker 3: the news to talk about. This is her regularly scheduled
• 13:28
Speaker 3: monthly appearance with us. We'll talk to her about that.
• 13:30
Speaker 3: Also today begans a new era in broadcasting for WVRC
• 13:35
Speaker 3: Media Station's Hoppy kerchilled, of course, longtime host of talk Line,
• 13:38
Speaker 3: announcing his retirement. His final show was on Friday. If
• 13:41
Speaker 3: he didn't get a chance to hear the show, it's
• 13:43
Speaker 3: available wv metronews dot com. You really owe it to
• 13:46
Speaker 3: yourself to go back and listen to it. It's a
• 13:47
Speaker 3: fantastic show. But the new guys, the new sheriffs in
• 13:50
Speaker 3: town or Dave Wilson and TJ. Meadows. TJ. Meadows will
• 13:53
Speaker 3: be based here in Charleston. He'll join us a little
• 13:55
Speaker 3: bit later on. We'll take a break now. When we
• 13:57
Speaker 3: come back, we're going to talk to meteorologis Brian Hughes
• 13:59
Speaker 3: from Storm Tracker. Third Jane back after this on the
• 14:01
Speaker 3: Voice to Charleston WCCHS.
• 14:04

• 16:29
Speaker 3: You're an old radio guy anyway, right, exactly.
• 16:32
Speaker 8: Listen, I've done radio all my life, so I'm totally
• 16:36
Speaker 8: used to it. But also, hey, listen, we got a
• 16:37
Speaker 8: storm coming Friday into Saturday. To that one.
• 16:40
Speaker 3: All right, weather boy, let's just take one at a time, okay,
• 16:43
Speaker 3: just so we'll worry about that later. All right. So
• 16:45
Speaker 3: we've been talking about this storm for well over a
• 16:49
Speaker 3: week in your opinion, and there's no way to say this.
• 16:52
Speaker 3: I just kind of want to kind of get your
• 16:53
Speaker 3: take on it. Was it all it was cracked up
• 16:57
Speaker 3: to be? I mean, obviously there are issues you don't know.
• 17:01
Speaker 3: No one gets it one hundred percent right, because you
• 17:03
Speaker 3: are dealing with mother nature. But it's pretty much what
• 17:05
Speaker 3: you guys expected it would be, right right.
• 17:08
Speaker 8: You know. I think the only thing was we probably
• 17:10
Speaker 8: undersold the amount of snow is the canal valley down
• 17:14
Speaker 8: into the cold fields and the ice element. You know,
• 17:18
Speaker 8: if you're looking like last week, the ice element was
• 17:21
Speaker 8: not as prevalent as it is right now. I mean,
• 17:24
Speaker 8: we knew we were gonna have an ice storm, but
• 17:26
Speaker 8: you know to what extent. I mean, Listen, I just
• 17:29
Speaker 8: talked to Rod Blackstone. His pine tree fell into his out.
• 17:33
Speaker 8: Oh yeah, so he's got part of the Yeah, so
• 17:36
Speaker 8: he's got part of the roof damage there. So and
• 17:39
Speaker 8: I'm looking at the MANGOI tree out front of our
• 17:41
Speaker 8: TV station. It's sagging, you know. So you know, I
• 17:45
Speaker 8: think we I think we nailed the majority of it.
• 17:48
Speaker 8: I'm I'm like a probably as seventy five percent we
• 17:51
Speaker 8: nailed this. But you know, there's just some things that
• 17:53
Speaker 8: you'll always have been perfections on and that you have
• 17:55
Speaker 8: to go back and look, Okay, what we have done
• 17:58
Speaker 8: better or seem better, and really that it just bowls
• 18:01
Speaker 8: down to you know, trusting your gut on a lot
• 18:03
Speaker 8: of this. And we trust our gut on a lot
• 18:04
Speaker 8: of it, and we got most of it here.
• 18:06
Speaker 3: And when you think about this storm, one of the things, yeah,
• 18:09
Speaker 3: I heard you say, actually I think you said this
• 18:11
Speaker 3: on the air and also in social media that in
• 18:12
Speaker 3: your twenty five plus years of doing this sort of thing,
• 18:15
Speaker 3: you and Spencer Adkins and the folks over there that
• 18:17
Speaker 3: do this, this was one of the more difficult storms
• 18:20
Speaker 3: to predict because it was one, two, three, four, five
• 18:22
Speaker 3: different phases. We're still not done yet, but it was
• 18:26
Speaker 3: overall a very very what you tell me, a difficult
• 18:28
Speaker 3: storm to predict, Brian.
• 18:31
Speaker 8: It really was because you have to look at the
• 18:33
Speaker 8: different elements that are involved. Like you said, we're really
• 18:36
Speaker 8: at five phases, and that is you know, you had
• 18:38
Speaker 8: first of all, the you know, the initial band of
• 18:41
Speaker 8: snow that came in. It was right on time, exactly
• 18:43
Speaker 8: what we're talking about. Then you had to switch over,
• 18:46
Speaker 8: you know. Then you had the heavy snow that continued
• 18:49
Speaker 8: to band over, noman over again. You had the freezing
• 18:52
Speaker 8: grain that moved in and just a little bit of
• 18:54
Speaker 8: sleep that's it was just temporary. Right after that, you
• 18:57
Speaker 8: have that rain, Then you've got the law that we're
• 19:00
Speaker 8: in now and then you're going to have the wind
• 19:03
Speaker 8: and sow this afternoon that's going to take the power
• 19:05
Speaker 8: lines down, that they trees down that are weighted down
• 19:08
Speaker 8: too much. And then we've got the arcticare that moves
• 19:11
Speaker 8: in as well, and that's going to carry us on
• 19:13
Speaker 8: into the next storm.
• 19:14
Speaker 3: So even though we're talking about a snow event, Brian,
• 19:18
Speaker 3: from this point on, the thread of freezing rain is
• 19:21
Speaker 3: going to start to subside. It doesn't mean that the
• 19:23
Speaker 3: threat of power outages is going to subside.
• 19:26
Speaker 8: No, because we've still got probably another three hours of
• 19:31
Speaker 8: extremely light freezing rain, some freezing drizzle that'll be popping
• 19:35
Speaker 8: up here and there, just spotty in nature. But then
• 19:37
Speaker 8: we move to snow essentially about noontime, and it's going
• 19:41
Speaker 8: to be snow for the rest of the day. But
• 19:43
Speaker 8: in that snow we will have some lighteout conditions and
• 19:47
Speaker 8: we're going to have, you know, the power issues because
• 19:49
Speaker 8: we're have north winds going to be anywhere from ten
• 19:52
Speaker 8: to fifteen easy with some guts to twenty. And that's
• 19:55
Speaker 8: what you can need. I mean, you could have a
• 19:58
Speaker 8: five to ten mile an hour wind and we'll take
• 20:00
Speaker 8: trees and power lines down. I mean, because you know
• 20:02
Speaker 8: you and I assumed you hear the crackling in the wind,
• 20:05
Speaker 8: and you're going to hear a lot of that this
• 20:08
Speaker 8: afternoon and the sevening, and it's going to be a
• 20:10
Speaker 8: problem for us with the power out of this right now,
• 20:13
Speaker 8: if you look collectively across the region, our power outage
• 20:17
Speaker 8: numbers are in the tens of thousands. When you look
• 20:21
Speaker 8: at southwest Virginia, western West Virginia into parts of eastern
• 20:25
Speaker 8: Kentucky that we cover, you know, we're looking at thirty
• 20:29
Speaker 8: thousand plus customers about.
• 20:30
Speaker 3: Power well, and again we're suffering from it as well
• 20:33
Speaker 3: because we have a lot of stations in this building,
• 20:35
Speaker 3: and I think the majority of them are off the
• 20:37
Speaker 3: terrestrial radio right now. Thank goodness for us that so
• 20:41
Speaker 3: many people listen on apps, because you know, it's not
• 20:44
Speaker 3: as big a deal for us as what it used
• 20:45
Speaker 3: to be. We never want to, you know, shut out
• 20:47
Speaker 3: any of our listeners, but especially to this show in
• 20:50
Speaker 3: this station. The majority of people listen online anyway, either
• 20:53
Speaker 3: on an app or on a device of some of
• 20:54
Speaker 3: some kind or whatever. So at least we have that
• 20:57
Speaker 3: to back. And so what about the road conditions, what
• 20:59
Speaker 3: do you what are you hearing out there.
• 21:01
Speaker 8: So the main roads are and I'm talking about the
• 21:05
Speaker 8: main roads. We're talking about interstates and US Highways are
• 21:08
Speaker 8: in pre decent shape. Just had the guys come in.
• 21:11
Speaker 8: They literally just walked in the door from Palmeroy and
• 21:14
Speaker 8: they'll tell you anywhere north of like fair Plane, it's
• 21:17
Speaker 8: a problem even on the main roads because you're looking
• 21:20
Speaker 8: at some of the snow and ice combined, and so
• 21:24
Speaker 8: it's once you get to that snow line that's in
• 21:25
Speaker 8: the roads get a little more tricky. But it's around
• 21:28
Speaker 8: Charleston Kennell Valley. The Interstate Primary lane and also US
• 21:35
Speaker 8: Roads Primary lane are in good shape. But once you
• 21:38
Speaker 8: get to the city streets and listen. I was on
• 21:40
Speaker 8: the phone with the mayor yesterday and Brent Webster, and
• 21:43
Speaker 8: we were trying to game plan on timing and have
• 21:45
Speaker 8: Disney things best time of attack, and you know they've
• 21:48
Speaker 8: been doing a great job, but it is extremely difficult.
• 21:51
Speaker 8: Once you get freezing random x, you can't do much
• 21:54
Speaker 8: at all, and so you've got problems that Now, as
• 21:58
Speaker 8: I've said about the roads, especially when you get the
• 22:01
Speaker 8: intersections and such, it's chunky. Everything's chunky.
• 22:04
Speaker 3: That's a good way to put it. Chunky.
• 22:06
Speaker 8: Yeah. So it's got your city streets, your neighborhood streets,
• 22:11
Speaker 8: I should say, your neighborhood streets are problematic. But if
• 22:14
Speaker 8: you can make it to the main rudder like McCorkle,
• 22:16
Speaker 8: or if you can make it to you know, uh,
• 22:18
Speaker 8: your whatever it is, whatever the road numbers are nineteen nineteen,
• 22:23
Speaker 8: you can make it to those, You're okay.
• 22:25
Speaker 3: And uh so you guys, and I know folks that
• 22:28
Speaker 3: do weather forecasting in general, I mean you just kind
• 22:30
Speaker 3: of hunkered down for this, h for this sort of thing.
• 22:33
Speaker 3: I mean you this is why this is in the
• 22:35
Speaker 3: words of Bill Parcells, this is why you lift all
• 22:37
Speaker 3: them weights. You know, you guys kind of prepare for
• 22:40
Speaker 3: these things. And I know that you spend some time
• 22:42
Speaker 3: sleeping at the stations and then things of that nature.
• 22:45
Speaker 3: You are lucky enough to live relatively close. But uh,
• 22:48
Speaker 3: this is this is what you do to keep people informed.
• 22:51
Speaker 8: Right Listen, It's fun, we love it, and it's it's
• 22:54
Speaker 8: also why it's like during spring, we watch tornado coverage
• 22:58
Speaker 8: in Oklahoma, Alabama where the big stuff is happening, you know,
• 23:02
Speaker 8: so we sort of hone our skills. We watched the radar,
• 23:05
Speaker 8: same thing with wind of storms. You're looking at these things,
• 23:07
Speaker 8: the different elements, and thankfully, you know, you know, I
• 23:10
Speaker 8: know I look pretty and looked young, but and.
• 23:13
  Speaker 3: You're so humble.
• 23:14
Speaker 8: You're so humble, right, just someone, but but I'm thankfully
• 23:19
Speaker 8: I've been doing this long enough that you you understand
• 23:21
Speaker 8: the storms better. You understand where the belly of the
• 23:25
Speaker 8: eaves once you get into it, and how things evolve.
• 23:28
Speaker 8: And you're like, oh, I've seen that before. Yep, I
• 23:30
Speaker 8: know what to do. So thankfully we've done very good
• 23:33
Speaker 8: on this one. The next one be a little tricky,
• 23:34
Speaker 8: but we're ready for.
• 23:35
Speaker 3: It, and we'll get to that in a moment. Before
• 23:37
Speaker 3: I'll let you go, though, what is our timeline for today?
• 23:39
Speaker 3: As you said in the Charleston area when I came
• 23:41
Speaker 3: in this morning, we're in kind of a lull right now,
• 23:43
Speaker 3: but it ain't over.
• 23:45
Speaker 8: No, it's not. So we have some light freezing drizzle
• 23:48
Speaker 8: from now all the way through about the lunch hour,
• 23:50
Speaker 8: about noon one at the latest, we switched back over
• 23:54
Speaker 8: to snow, and about two three o'clock, after the winds
• 23:57
Speaker 8: really isn't going to start to pick up out of
• 23:58
Speaker 8: the north. We'll have light snowshur in additional one to
• 24:01
Speaker 8: two inches, could get a couple of spots to hit three,
• 24:03
Speaker 8: but additional one to two inches of snow on top
• 24:05
Speaker 8: all this that makes it a mess. And then the
• 24:08
Speaker 8: snow shuts off somewhere around probably eight to nine o'clock tonight,
• 24:13
Speaker 8: and then we're done. We'll have some flurries of the
• 24:15
Speaker 8: mountains off and on tonight we'll have some a couple
• 24:18
Speaker 8: of flurries with the clouds with any cloud that pass,
• 24:20
Speaker 8: but you can see a flury or two. Tomorrow Wednesday,
• 24:23
Speaker 8: we have an opportunity to see some snow Lake effect
• 24:26
Speaker 8: snow off of Lake Michigan here and we could get
• 24:29
Speaker 8: a dusting to an inch on Wednesday, dry Thursday drive
• 24:32
Speaker 8: for much of the day on Friday, Friday night into Saturday.
• 24:35
Speaker 8: Storm system that comes out of the desert southwest across
• 24:38
Speaker 8: Texas as an ice storm heads for us. Primarily looking
• 24:41
Speaker 8: at snow with that one.
• 24:43
Speaker 3: And it's way too early, I'm sure to put a
• 24:46
Speaker 3: number on that, and that's what people want. Follow social
• 24:48
Speaker 3: media a lot, and that's what people How many inches
• 24:50
Speaker 3: are we going to have? And so on and so forth.
• 24:52
Speaker 3: In this particular, if you look at the amount of
• 24:54
Speaker 3: snow that we have here in the Kenal Valley. We've
• 24:56
Speaker 3: certainly had a whole lot more snow in the past.
• 24:59
Speaker 3: But as you and the fo there say, it's about impact.
• 25:01
Speaker 3: It's not about inches, it's about impact.
• 25:04
Speaker 8: Yeah, and that's the thing, you know, Listen, I think
• 25:07
Speaker 8: I've probably had six inches of snow yesterday, but when
• 25:10
Speaker 8: you look at the snow right now, it's down to
• 25:12
Speaker 8: about two. So that's because of you know, the freezing
• 25:17
Speaker 8: rain and the sleet and a little bit of sleep
• 25:18
Speaker 8: that came in and compacted it. But you know, what
• 25:21
Speaker 8: we're going to look at is impact for this next
• 25:24
Speaker 8: one is going to be impact because the ground would
• 25:26
Speaker 8: be solidly frozen. So anything that falls, whether it be
• 25:29
Speaker 8: rain or freezing rain, sleet, snow, it is going to
• 25:33
Speaker 8: stick just because the ground's so solidly frozen. That one
• 25:37
Speaker 8: right now, just a rough estimate, it looks to be
• 25:40
Speaker 8: a three anywhere from two to four inches worth of
• 25:43
Speaker 8: snow with that next one Friday night and to Saturday.
• 25:46
Speaker 8: If we're just shooting from the hip at this point.
• 25:48
Speaker 8: But there's still a lot of things to go between now, right.
• 25:52
Speaker 3: Yeah, one at a time, one a time, Ryan, I
• 25:53
Speaker 3: appreciate you being here. At the bottom line is we're
• 25:56
Speaker 3: going to Steven without the snow. We're going to stay
• 25:59
Speaker 3: in the deep freeze for sometimes. So that snow that's
• 26:01
Speaker 3: on your back decker and your backyard, it's going to
• 26:03
Speaker 3: be there for a few weeks more than likely.
• 26:05
Speaker 8: Right if you have not cleaned it off yet, kind of,
• 26:08
Speaker 8: I guess you. I took the actual blower, those loads
• 26:10
Speaker 8: big blowers, and I actually blew the snow off every
• 26:13
Speaker 8: chance I got, and still I went out there this one.
• 26:16
Speaker 8: I was like, well, can't blow this off now. So
• 26:19
Speaker 8: but but you've got to do your best to clean
• 26:22
Speaker 8: it up because if not, you know, it's just gonna stick.
• 26:25
Speaker 8: It's going to stay, and then you got to walk
• 26:27
Speaker 8: around it, and you get it's just more problem. So
• 26:28
Speaker 8: do your best to get it done. Today virtually nobody
• 26:31
Speaker 8: has to work except for just a few of it.
• 26:33
Speaker 3: Yeah, TH's media types, all right, Brian, I do appreciate it, man,
• 26:38
Speaker 3: Thanks a lot. You guys do a fantastic job. We'll

• 27:39
Speaker 3: is that I had an old radio programmer who told
• 27:41
Speaker 3: me this one time. I was fresh out of college
• 27:43
Speaker 3: working at a radio station in Ohio and he and
• 27:46
Speaker 3: this was well before internet or you know, anything like that.
• 27:48
Speaker 3: He told me. He said, people don't want to know
• 27:51
Speaker 3: whether it's going to rain or snow or whatever. They
• 27:55
Speaker 3: want to know if it's going to rain on them.
• 27:57
  Speaker 3: And then that's that's pretty that's a it's a pretty
• 28:00
Speaker 3: accurate way of putting it. Now, Brian said, as you
• 28:03
Speaker 3: will know that to many of you are listening to
• 28:05
Speaker 3: us this morning because you're not working today, because a
• 28:08
Speaker 3: great number of businesses are closed today, there are some
• 28:11
Speaker 3: that are open. The governor did issue a state of
• 28:14
Speaker 3: emergency for the state of West Virginia, so I would
• 28:16
Speaker 3: urge you again if you do not have to be
• 28:19
Speaker 3: out on the roads today, please do not. And a
• 28:22
Speaker 3: lot of people will look out their window right now,
• 28:24
Speaker 3: I think, well, we got the snow on the ground,
• 28:26
Speaker 3: we got the ice on the ground, but there's nothing
• 28:28
Speaker 3: going on right now. That's going to change, as Brian
• 28:30
Speaker 3: said around lunchtime, a little bit later on, that's all
• 28:33
Speaker 3: going to change, and we're going to get another band
• 28:36
Speaker 3: of snow that's going to come in. And we're actually
• 28:37
Speaker 3: in some areas as I speak getting some freezing rain
• 28:41
Speaker 3: again on top of that, so we are not out
• 28:43
Speaker 3: of the woods by any stretch of the imagination. The
• 28:47
Speaker 3: tree line, the trees, and the power lines are going
• 28:49
Speaker 3: to continue to snap, as many of them already have.
• 28:53
Speaker 3: We got, you know, thousands and thousands upon thousands of
• 28:56
Speaker 3: people without power. Thankfully this was predicted well in advance,
• 29:01
Speaker 3: so hopefully people were able to make their arrangements that
• 29:04
  Speaker 3: I don't know about you, but I'm already I'm already
• 29:08
Speaker 3: ready for spring and summer. My man Joe Stevens, I
• 29:11
Speaker 3: know from the West Virginia Skier. He's association who got
• 29:14
Speaker 3: on me a couple of years ago. Because I refer
• 29:15
Speaker 3: to this as junk, it's probably you know, nation his
• 29:19
Speaker 3: teeth right now, Let's say this is good for some
• 29:21
Speaker 3: peop It is good for some people, but for a
• 29:23
Speaker 3: lot of people, uh, it is not. In the heart
• 29:26
Speaker 3: of West Virginia, there exist a profound force that goes

Speaker 3: Charleston may Or Amy Shulder, good one, Happy winter storm,
• 33:08
Speaker 3: Blair mayor good one.
• 33:11
Speaker 7: Yeah, Happy Monday to you as well, sir.
• 33:14
Speaker 3: And I was just talking to h Brian Hughes a
• 33:16
Speaker 3: couple of moments ago. No pun intended, but this storm
• 33:19
Speaker 3: has been on the radar for quite some time.
• 33:22
Speaker 7: That's right, you know, And and we appreciate all of
• 33:26
Speaker 7: the detail that has been given to us by our
• 33:30
Speaker 7: local meteorologists and obviously the National Weather Center. We keep
• 33:33
Speaker 7: our eye to the sky. I mean, when I became
• 33:36
Speaker 7: mayor six years ago, it was something that I knew
• 33:38
Speaker 7: that I would have to monitor, having been in government
• 33:40
Speaker 7: before and processes and things that you have to do.
• 33:44
Speaker 7: But as as mayor of the Capital City, we've got
• 33:47
Speaker 7: seventeen salt trucks that have been working around the clock
• 33:50
Speaker 7: when I'm in around the clock, Dave, I mean around
• 33:52
Speaker 7: the clock. These these guys have been you know, pre
• 33:56
Speaker 7: treating you know, salting scrape since uh, since early on
• 34:05
Speaker 7: Friday and to Saturday and yesterday all day. We planned
• 34:09
Speaker 7: for this, but you know, again we plan for this,
• 34:13
Speaker 7: but it's mother nature and we live in Appalachia and
• 34:18
Speaker 7: so uh, you know, snow is always an issue, but
• 34:22
Speaker 7: it is the ice that snarls U traffic and causes
• 34:27
Speaker 7: most of our accidents and the power outages that you see.
• 34:31
Speaker 7: And as Brian Duly noted, we are getting ready for
• 34:34
Speaker 7: another system to come to come through and and just
• 34:39
Speaker 7: for your you know, the thing that I probably can
• 34:42
Speaker 7: add that Brian didn't is you know, and I can
• 34:44
Speaker 7: only speak of the thirty three square miles that are
• 34:47
Speaker 7: that are Charleston. We win most snow battles, We can
• 34:52
Speaker 7: win most if we retreat and stay ahead of it.
• 34:56
Speaker 7: But ice is a is a different beast. I mean,
• 34:58
Speaker 7: there are there are snows facilities, you know, ski resorts
• 35:01
Speaker 7: in the state of West Virginia that had to shut
• 35:03
Speaker 7: down because of ice, and for good reason. People lose
• 35:07
Speaker 7: power and salt on ice just you know, that's a losing,
• 35:13
  Speaker 7: losing battle.
• 35:14
Speaker 3: It is, indeed, and I'll tell you how you know
• 35:17
Speaker 3: it's bad is from my part of the world. When
• 35:20
Speaker 3: the coal mines close, and several of them did, they
• 35:23
Speaker 3: reached out to their workers in the coal mining areas
• 35:25
Speaker 3: and said no work today. That tells you something right there.
• 35:30
Speaker 7: Yeah. I mean, you know, my kids they love the
• 35:33
Speaker 7: ski and snowboard and when they said, oh it's closed today, Well,
• 35:36
Speaker 7: it's because it's power and because it's ice. Ice is
• 35:40
Speaker 7: just a totally different beast. And if we get some
• 35:42
Speaker 7: of the winds and we get this you know snow
• 35:45
Speaker 7: system that's going to come through the branches are going
• 35:47
Speaker 7: to get heavier and oh, by the way, are through.
• 35:51
Speaker 7: You know, we're doing double time. It's not just the
• 35:54
Speaker 7: seventeen trucks that have been salting and scraping. By the way,
• 35:57
Speaker 7: anybody who is listening who knows anything about heavy equipment
• 36:01
Speaker 7: or operations, they we all to have our mechanics in
• 36:06
Speaker 7: because they've been working over time tonight as well. Because
• 36:10
Speaker 7: you thought you scrape and you hit something and a
• 36:13
Speaker 7: blade goes off, we got to bring it in. We've
• 36:16
Speaker 7: got to fix it, repair it, whatever we need to
• 36:18
Speaker 7: do to get it back on the road, and that
• 36:19
Speaker 7: takes time, and sometimes that's a two hour downtime on
• 36:23
Speaker 7: one truck. So, you know, priority roads making sure that
• 36:27
Speaker 7: people can can keep essential services. You know this as
• 36:32
Speaker 7: well as anyone we go hospitals out right, we've got
• 36:34
Speaker 7: to make sure that that that pathway is clear. If
• 36:38
Speaker 7: your road has not been assaulted or scraped, you know
• 36:41
Speaker 7: we're going to get there. We have primary roads and
• 36:43
Speaker 7: secondary roads and we're doing our best to keep ahead
• 36:48
Speaker 7: of it. We had calls last night. I was on
• 36:51
Speaker 7: the line with our director of Public Works until you know,
• 36:54
Speaker 7: wee hours of the morning and then up again, and
• 36:57
Speaker 7: those calls and texts coming in at four or five
• 36:59
Speaker 7: to do a es so to say that you know,
• 37:02
Speaker 7: it's it's a lot of folks in your city government
• 37:05
Speaker 7: are working, and it's not just public grounds and public works.
• 37:09
Speaker 7: It's your your ems, your police, your fire department. So
• 37:13
Speaker 7: they're all They're all running on all of the cylinders
• 37:18
Speaker 7: that we have and will continue to do so, by
• 37:20
Speaker 7: the way, because this is this is Brian has said
• 37:23
Speaker 7: to us, and other meteorologists from the Cross Region have
• 37:25
Speaker 7: said to us, this is not just about snow. It's
• 37:28
Speaker 7: about ice and the amount of time that it has
• 37:34
Speaker 7: taken when we started to see some of these inches
• 37:36
Speaker 7: of snow. This is going to be you know, up
• 37:40
Speaker 7: until tomorrow. We're still going to have some challenges. People
• 37:42
Speaker 7: are going to continue to be without power. We're going
• 37:45
Speaker 7: to try to not only salt and scrape the roads,
• 37:48
Speaker 7: but we're also trying to get trees out of the way.
• 37:50
Speaker 7: I currently have one truck that is blocked in a
• 37:53
Speaker 7: neighborhood right now because a tree is in front of them.
• 37:57
Speaker 3: I don't mean to laugh about that, but if you're
• 37:59
Speaker 3: a resident of that neighborhood, you might want to go
• 38:01
Speaker 3: out and say, hey, you want to come in and
• 38:02
Speaker 3: watch prices right with us or something, you know, because
• 38:04
Speaker 3: you're not going anywhere for a while.
• 38:07
Speaker 7: Well, you know, kudos to our team. This is you know,
• 38:10
Speaker 7: this is not their first radio And let me just
• 38:13
Speaker 7: give a shout out as well. You know this about me,
• 38:16
  Speaker 7: I don't, I don't. I don't like to drive in
• 38:19
Speaker 7: the heck, I don't like to drive when it's sunny
• 38:21
Speaker 7: in seventy five out let alone when it's raining, or
• 38:25
Speaker 7: certainly when it's swing. These are folks who are very
• 38:27
Speaker 7: good at what they do. We practiced these routes. By
• 38:29
Speaker 7: the way, we practiced these routes almost just as you're
• 38:33
Speaker 7: getting ready for a competition, because it is a high
• 38:36
Speaker 7: stress time for our drivers. They're on hillsides, cliffs, welcome
• 38:43
Speaker 7: to the Mountain state. So they have to be very
• 38:45
Speaker 7: good at what they do. They know when to hit
• 38:47
Speaker 7: the button, I've been in the trucks many many times,
• 38:50
Speaker 7: when to hit the salt, when it sprays, when de scraped.
• 38:54
Speaker 7: It is a process and so we do a lot
• 38:58
Speaker 7: of training and they do a lot of dry run.
• 39:00
Speaker 7: So when people say I saw your trucks out at sixty,
• 39:04
Speaker 7: why do you have your trucks out, Well, it was
• 39:06
Speaker 7: probably a training run. It was probably a time in
• 39:08
Speaker 7: which we were either teaching somebody if they were going
• 39:11
Speaker 7: on a new route, what roads you have to hit.
• 39:13
Speaker 7: And also we take in considerations shortly when people say, oh,
• 39:17
Speaker 7: bridges free, Yeah, we do. We keep an eye to
• 39:20
Speaker 7: our bridges in those corners and slick spots where we
• 39:23
Speaker 7: see accidents happen. There is a method to our madness.
• 39:26
Speaker 7: It sometimes doesn't look pretty out there, but I promise
• 39:29
Speaker 7: you these folks know what they're doing and they're working.
• 39:32
Speaker 7: They're tail feathers off.

Speaker 3: I got a text for you, says why doesn't the
• 39:50
Speaker 3: city ever open the Civic Center as a warming center
• 39:53
Speaker 3: for those who lose power, homeless and frustrate animals. There's
• 39:55
Speaker 3: plenty of room and one location people could easily volunteer.
• 40:01
Speaker 7: Well, it's a great question, and let me go ahead
• 40:03
Speaker 7: and say, we certainly have utilized our coliseum and convention
• 40:07
Speaker 7: Center during times of need. If you recall, and I
• 40:09
Speaker 7: think you were there with me on several occasions during COVID,
• 40:13
Speaker 7: that was our main use of the coliseum and convention Center.
• 40:16
Speaker 7: We fortunately have amazing partners in the city who help
• 40:20
Speaker 7: us with warming centers and warming stations. Breen is one
• 40:24
Speaker 7: of our centers that we work with, the Canaw Valley Collective,
• 40:28
Speaker 7: Tracy Strickland and Margaret O'Neill with the United Way, our
• 40:33
Speaker 7: wonderful partners with us. We have had a warming station
• 40:37
Speaker 7: open and it will continue to be because oh yeah,
• 40:41
Speaker 7: by the way, this is not going away any time
• 40:45
  Speaker 7: anytime soon.
• 40:46
Speaker 3: Now, even after I mean, you know, as Brian said,
• 40:49
Speaker 3: you know, the snow was going to start to wind
• 40:50
Speaker 3: down by the end of the day, but we still
• 40:52
Speaker 3: got several hours of well little freezing rain and then
• 40:55
Speaker 3: some snow. We got a couple more inches of snow
• 40:57
Speaker 3: on the way today. But even after that is head
• 41:00
Speaker 3: into let's say, the overnight hours tomorrow and over the
• 41:02
Speaker 3: next couple of days before we get ready for the
• 41:04
Speaker 3: next system. The big one's going to be well, the
• 41:06
Speaker 3: next big one's going to be coming in this weekend,
• 41:08
Speaker 3: they tell us. But it's you know, we're talking about
• 41:11
Speaker 3: windshiels at zero or below high temperatures in the twenties
• 41:15
Speaker 3: and many areas, So that snow, as I said earlier, Mayor,
• 41:19
Speaker 3: that snow that's out there right now, you'll be looking
• 41:21
Speaker 3: at it for another couple of weeks and the temperatures
• 41:23
Speaker 3: aren't going up anytime soon.
• 41:25
Speaker 7: Yeah, And those arming centers will be open, they will
• 41:28
Speaker 7: be open. And but if you do, you know, as always,
• 41:32
Speaker 7: we're you know, Mayor's office is still working today, Tina,
• 41:36
Speaker 7: Andrew Matthew and I are City Manager Ben Michelle. I
• 41:39
Speaker 7: have already been on the phone with Madame President Becky
• 41:42
Speaker 7: Sepperley this morning. If you if you still need us,
• 41:45
Speaker 7: please call and and let me also say this. We're
• 41:49
Speaker 7: you know, we're getting calls and I'm getting a lot
• 41:51
Speaker 7: of texts of hey, I haven't heard from my neighbor.
• 41:55
Speaker 7: Hey can you if you want us to check on somebody.
• 41:58

• 42:23
Speaker 7: by the way, we want to do it for you.
• 42:26
Speaker 7: We don't want people out on the room if you
• 42:28
Speaker 7: don't have to be. I know that. People say way,
• 42:30
Speaker 7: there's many of us who have to be. I get it,
• 42:33
Speaker 7: and that's why we are working for you to make
• 42:36
Speaker 7: sure our roads are clear and people stay off the
• 42:39
Speaker 7: roads so you can get to your job. God all

• 42:57
Speaker 7: quick hours of sleep now because they're going to have
• 43:00

• 43:03
Speaker 3: Before I do. You know, normally we have you on

• 43:09
Speaker 3: a little bit earlier. You told me yesterday when we
• 43:11
Speaker 3: were talking that you're in between weather meetings this morning,
• 43:13
Speaker 3: and I do appreciate you being here. I want to
• 43:15

• 43:17
Speaker 3: you were scheduled to do your State of the City
• 43:21
Speaker 3: addressed as part of City Council that has been postponed.
• 43:24
Speaker 3: I understand until Thursday night, Is that right?
• 43:27
Speaker 7: Yeah, that's right. I mean all hands on deck that
• 43:30
Speaker 7: can wait. What can't wait are getting people to their homes,
• 43:35
Speaker 7: offices and schools, so that takes priority. As I mentioned,
• 43:40
Speaker 7: I was talking to Council President Becky separately, Matthew Sutton,
• 43:43
Speaker 7: our chief of staff, was on the phone with our
• 43:46
Speaker 7: Chairman of Finance, Joe Jenkins. We have postponed our meeting
• 43:50
Speaker 7: until Thursday. We'll do not only our city Council, our
• 43:55
Speaker 7: business we got just like federal government, state government, simple government.
• 44:01
Speaker 7: We're working, we're not not working. But we're going to
• 44:05
Speaker 7: postpone that seat council meeting until Thursday because we do
• 44:09
Speaker 7: have action items we need to take up, and of
• 44:12
Speaker 7: course our State of the City will happen at that
• 44:15
Speaker 7: time as well on Thursday, but more pressing issues need
• 44:19
Speaker 7: to be taken care of than that at this point.
• 44:22
Speaker 3: And I do want to mention that you're going to
• 44:23
Speaker 3: have an opening on City Council because Councilman Sam Minardis
• 44:26
Speaker 3: has tendered his resignation quickly talk about that.
• 44:29
Speaker 7: Yeah, Sam Minardi is just a star. And if anybody
• 44:33
Speaker 7: knows Sam, you know that he is family and community first.
• 44:37
Speaker 7: He has been such an amazing asset to the City
• 44:41
Speaker 7: of Charleston, and so while I will miss working with him,
• 44:45
Speaker 7: he was always the voice of reason right if you
• 44:47
Speaker 7: if you wanted to question yourself and ask somebody's opinion
• 44:50
Speaker 7: of what they really thought, he'd give it to you
• 44:52
Speaker 7: in a calm, clear, collective voice. And he was always
• 44:58
Speaker 7: on the always on the money. I am excited to
• 45:02
Speaker 7: welcome in a new member of council, Shirley. And oh,
• 45:06
Speaker 7: by the way, this will be my council member as
• 45:08

• 45:11

• 45:15
Speaker 7: and we'll do that appointment on Sturge Day day.
• 45:17
