Latest / Stugotz and Company / Big Stu-ey: World Series Champs and Think About it Thursday
Transcript
- 0:21Speaker 1: Our thanks to Chris Sims for joining us earlier. The
- 0:24Speaker 1: baseball season concluded last night. The Milwaukee Brewers are the
- 0:29Speaker 1: World Series champions for the first time in franchise history.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Were you guys happy to see the Rays lose?
- 0:35Speaker 1: Did you care? What did you guys think?
- 0:37Speaker 3: I was happy for the Brewers and seeing the Brewers
- 0:39Speaker 3: in their celebration. William Contreras was probably who I was
- 0:43Speaker 3: the happiest for, where he hits. 381 with four RBIs.
- 0:46Speaker 3: He wins World Series MVP. Stu, one of the greatest
- 0:49Speaker 3: calendar years in baseball history, where he wins the World
- 0:52Speaker 3: Baseball Classic with Venezuela, helping Venezuela win the first World
- 0:56Speaker 3: Baseball Classic championship in their history. And then he wins
- 0:59Speaker 3: the World Series MVP, helping the Brewers be the first
- 1:02Speaker 3: time in their franchise history, too.
- 1:04Speaker 1: And he also came out afterwards and said, because he's
- 1:06Speaker 1: feeling good about himself, I'm the best catcher in the world.
- 1:09Speaker 1: He might be. Prove him wrong. I would give you
- 1:15Speaker 1: a second catcher, but I don't have one off the
- 1:17Speaker 1: top of my head. Who is the second best catcher
- 1:22Speaker 1: in Major League Baseball behind Wilson Contreras?
- 1:26Speaker 4: I mean, it's a good question.
- 1:28Speaker 5: It's a job for Ricardo. Where's Ricardo when you need him?
- 1:32Speaker 3: He's saying Cal Raleigh, big dumper, but Cal Raleigh.
- 1:36Speaker 4: One hit wonder.
- 1:36Speaker 3: Ryan Jeffers, maybe in Minnesota.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Cal Raleigh was great last year, but awful this year. Um,
- 1:43Speaker 1: so you agree with Contreras that he is the best
- 1:45Speaker 1: catcher on the planet.
- 1:47Speaker 4: I think by default, I don't know how you argue.
- 1:51Speaker 1: It's such a great thing to say because we love
- 1:53Speaker 1: sports and we can't make an argument about Against Wilson Contreras.
- 1:58Speaker 3: So, Stu, an all-time bailout moment yesterday where Jacob Mizorowski
- 2:02Speaker 3: takes the ball and Jacob Mizorowski throws five and two-thirds
- 2:06Speaker 3: scoreless innings. He was dominating Tampa. The Rays had no
- 2:10Speaker 3: answers for him. He was forced out of the game
- 2:13Speaker 3: after 86 pitches with a calf crap. Now, this is
- 2:18Speaker 3: the moment that every pitcher dreams about. You don't know
- 2:21Speaker 3: if you're ever going to get another opportunity to pitch
- 2:23Speaker 3: in the World Series again. Jacob Mizorowski, you simply cannot
- 2:28Speaker 3: leave a World Series clinching game because of cramps. I
- 2:32Speaker 3: don't care if your calf is cramping. I don't care
- 2:34Speaker 3: if you need a banana, some pickle juice, an IV.
- 2:37Speaker 3: You have to stay in that game and figure it out.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Or if you're going to come out, give us something
- 2:41Speaker 1: worse than a cramp in the calf, you know? I mean,
- 2:45Speaker 1: imagine Andy Pettit coming out of a game in the
- 2:47Speaker 1: World Series. Five and two-thirds because his calf is cramping
- 2:52Speaker 1: up on him. He wouldn't even tell the manager. He
- 2:54Speaker 1: would just keep throwing pitches. That's what he would do.
- 2:58Speaker 5: You muster up all your strength for one more pitch,
- 3:00Speaker 5: and then you purposely roll your ankle, and you'd be like, nope, guys,
- 3:04Speaker 5: it's the ankle. The ankle's the problem. And you don't
- 3:07Speaker 5: say a word about the calf until you're safely underneath
- 3:10Speaker 5: the dugout with the trainer. And you just go, my
- 3:13Speaker 5: ankle's fine.
- 3:14Speaker 4: I'm cramping.
- 3:15Speaker 1: Yes, it's like a sports whisperer where he whispers, it's
- 3:18Speaker 1: the calf, it's cramping up, but we can't tell anyone.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Tell them I broke a rib.
- 3:24Speaker 3: But credit to Mizorowski where he does deliver his best
- 3:27Speaker 3: start of the postseason in the biggest game of his
- 3:30Speaker 3: career before he has to leave. Stu, I'm not sure
- 3:32Speaker 3: if you saw this. After the game, Jake Bowers gifted
- 3:36Speaker 3: Pat Murphy the final out ball. And Murphy thanked him,
- 3:39Speaker 3: and he told him, you're going to be a rich bleeper.
- 3:43Speaker 3: Just remember when you're on that horseshit Yankee team and
- 3:46Speaker 3: you're all playing for yourselves, just remember this is the
- 3:49Speaker 3: way we used to do it. Now, there's some debate online.
- 3:53Speaker 3: Was Pat Murphy saying, remember this when you're on the Yankees,
- 3:57Speaker 3: meaning future tense, or remember when you were on the
- 4:00Speaker 3: Yankees past tense? Because Bowers was on the Yankee team
- 4:03Speaker 3: in 2023 when that Yankee team missed the playoffs.
- 4:08Speaker 1: He's using the Yankees as a symbol. He could have
- 4:10Speaker 1: said the Dodgers. He could have said the Red Sox.
- 4:12Speaker 1: He could have said the Dodgers.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Right.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Well, a big market team. He just knows that the
- 4:18Speaker 1: Brewers are not going to have enough money to sign
- 4:21Speaker 1: Bowers to a long-term deal. And he's just trying to
- 4:24Speaker 1: tell them, hey, enjoy what it is we have here.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Because when you go elsewhere, it will never feel this
- 4:29Speaker 1: good and this close again. Because he knows what we
- 4:32Speaker 1: all know. The Brewers can't afford to keep Bowers. When
- 4:36Speaker 1: their guys get good, they get going elsewhere, and that's
- 4:39Speaker 1: what happens with the Milwaukee Brewers. They're never going to
- 4:42Speaker 1: trade for Scooble. The Dodgers are. But they could say
- 4:45Speaker 1: it doesn't guarantee anything. You could spend all the money
- 4:48Speaker 1: in the world. It doesn't guarantee you a World Series title.
- 4:51Speaker 1: We just won it, and we didn't get Scooble, and
- 4:54Speaker 1: we did it on a far lesser budget than the
- 4:56Speaker 1: Dodgers and Yankees.
- 4:57Speaker 3: So as a Yankee fan, do I think it's strange
- 4:59Speaker 3: that moments after reaching the pinnacle of your sport— You're
- 5:03Speaker 3: thinking about the New York Yankees, who weren't even involved
- 5:06Speaker 3: in this series?
- 5:07Speaker 5: Yes.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Right.
- 5:08Speaker 3: Do I care that Pat Murphy is using the Yankees
- 5:11Speaker 3: to dunk on the Yankees and calling them out for
- 5:13Speaker 3: the joke that they are?
- 5:14Speaker 1: No.
- 5:14Speaker 3: I'm on Pat Murphy's side, and I'm encouraging more people
- 5:18Speaker 3: to call out the Yankees and how big of a
- 5:20Speaker 3: joke the Yankees are with Brian Cashman and Aaron Boone.
- 5:24Speaker 1: Speaking of Murphy, all I thought about as he was
- 5:26Speaker 1: winning a World Series was when he was a candidate,
- 5:29Speaker 1: and you told me the story, Taylor, a candidate for
- 5:31Speaker 1: the Mets job. And all the comments that Met fans
- 5:34Speaker 1: made online about who the hell is Murphy.
- 5:38Speaker 2: I mean, well, he's a World Series champion now. That's
- 5:40Speaker 2: who he is.
- 5:41Speaker 3: To be fair, if they hired Pat Murphy during that cycle,
- 5:44Speaker 3: he probably lasts two seasons and they run him out
- 5:47Speaker 3: of town after the first time. After the first sniff
- 5:50Speaker 3: of unsuccessful seasons.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Yeah, but I know you, Taylor. You love Pat Murphy.
- 5:55Speaker 2: You love.
- 5:57Speaker 4: Yeah, Pat Murphy is baseball.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Pat Murphy.
- 5:59Speaker 5: Looks like an old catcher's mitt.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Wait, put it on the poll. Does Pat Murphy look
- 6:05Speaker 1: like an old catcher's mitt? That is laugh out loud funny. Also,
- 6:10Speaker 1: is Pat Murphy baseball?
- 6:12Speaker 3: So, the thing that I love about the Brewers, and
- 6:15Speaker 3: Pat Murphy especially, the Brewers don't need a lineup full
- 6:19Speaker 3: of $ 25 million players to beat teams with significantly more
- 6:24Speaker 3: expensive rosters because... Pat Murphy has built a culture of accountability.
- 6:28Speaker 3: Like he's as old school manager can get where you
- 6:31Speaker 3: look at earlier examples from this year, William Contreras, who
- 6:34Speaker 3: we're talking about potentially being the best catcher in baseball.
- 6:37Speaker 1: He failed. He's talking about it. Yeah.
- 6:39Speaker 3: But I think more people are talking about it, but
- 6:42Speaker 3: Contreras earlier this year, I think in either August or September,
- 6:47Speaker 3: he failed to run hard on a routine ground ball
- 6:50Speaker 3: in a game against the Phillies. And, and, Pat Murphy,
- 6:53Speaker 3: he immediately pulled Contreras, and the next game, Contreras hits
- 6:57Speaker 3: a soft ground ball, and he's diving headfirst into first
- 7:00Speaker 3: base trying to prove to his manager that he's willing
- 7:03Speaker 3: to hustle. You have somebody like Cooper Pratt, who Cooper Pratt,
- 7:07Speaker 3: 22 years old, took this World Series by storm. He
- 7:10Speaker 3: removed Cooper Pratt from a game earlier in August when
- 7:14Speaker 3: Pratt can't get down a sacrifice bunt. And then me
- 7:17Speaker 3: and Mikey, we're watching Pat Murphy hold players accountable. Me
- 7:20Speaker 3: and Mikey have to watch Trent Grisham half-ass every play.
- 7:25Speaker 3: We watch Jazz Chisholm play the infield with a damn
- 7:28Speaker 3: lollipop in his mouth. And all we're asking is for
- 7:31Speaker 3: a little accountability, and that's all Pat Murphy does.
- 7:35Speaker 1: You're asking for Murphy, yes.
- 7:40Speaker 5: I mean, Trent Grisham was so bad and the Yankees
- 7:42Speaker 5: held him accountable by batting him leadoff.
- 7:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:45Speaker 4: Congratulations, Trent Grisham. Your laziness. This is what we're going
- 7:48Speaker 4: to do. We're going to reward you.
- 7:50Speaker 1: What makes Pat Murphy so sure that Pat Murphy's not
- 7:53Speaker 1: going to be the Yankees manager?
- 7:55Speaker 4: Yeah, this is the problem.
- 7:57Speaker 5: Brian Cashman would never bring.
- 8:01Speaker 3: Somebody into the building who's going to challenge him. Brian
- 8:03Speaker 3: Cashman only hires yes-men. If Pat Murphy tried to get
- 8:08Speaker 3: into the Yankees building, they would.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Never allow him in. Yes. Do you guys know how
- 8:13Speaker 1: enjoyable it is for me to watch two Yankee fans
- 8:16Speaker 1: be upset and jealous over the Milwaukee Brewers?
- 8:19Speaker 4: It's a different time.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Indiana is the top of the college football.
- 8:25Speaker 5: Milwaukee's winning World Series against the Tampa Bay.
- 8:28Speaker 4: Northwestern's a good winning college football.
- 8:31Speaker 1: I mean, never went away from making a playoff. That's
- 8:36Speaker 1: why I have boots on the ground in Chicago. I mean,
- 8:38Speaker 1: the heartland of America. This is where everything's happening.
- 8:41Speaker 4: We might send you to Milwaukee next. You're right there.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Oh, parade?
- 8:45Speaker 1: Yes. Me and Murph.
- 8:50Speaker 4: Get him on the show.
- 8:50Speaker 1: Make it happen. I could tell you a guy who
- 8:55Speaker 1: would love Pat Murphy and does. That's Christopher Mad Dog Russo.
- 9:00Speaker 1: He is doggies. That's doggies type of manager right there, right?
- 9:05Speaker 1: A guy who looks like an old catcher's mitt. Mikey,
- 9:08Speaker 1: that's such a good line. But, Mikey, I'm not certain
- 9:12Speaker 1: if you're aware of this. I'm going to play this
- 9:14Speaker 1: sound for you. Christopher Mad Dog Russo was on the
- 9:16Speaker 1: show with us earlier this week, and Taylor had a
- 9:19Speaker 1: suggestion for doggie. about what's the segment he does here
- 9:23Speaker 1: on First Take, Taylor? Mad About. All right, about Mad About.
- 9:28Speaker 1: And so let's play that sound first. This is Christopher
- 9:32Speaker 1: Mad Dog Russo on with us earlier this week.
- 9:36Speaker 3: Dog, the Brewers are one win away from their first
- 9:38Speaker 3: World Series. Did it bother you last night watching that
- 9:40Speaker 3: game when it's 10-0, Yandy Diaz bat-flipping an RBI double
- 9:45Speaker 3: that made the score 10-1?
- 9:46Speaker 5: I didn't even see that.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Did he really? You have Doggie up at 10-0 World
- 9:51Speaker 1: Series on a Monday?
- 9:52Speaker 6: I was watching the Dallas, and I went to bed
- 9:54Speaker 6: when the Cowboys kicked the field goal at 31-21 because
- 9:56Speaker 6: I wanted to get up and be sharp for you.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Yeah, of course.
- 10:01Speaker 5: I did not.
- 10:02Speaker 6: Yeah, that's a good man about he bat flipped that
- 10:04Speaker 6: at 10 nothing.
- 10:05Speaker 1: Yes. Yes. Yes.
- 10:07Speaker 5: What do you think was that eighth inning?
- 10:08Speaker 4: The ninth inning. I had one hit up to that point.
- 10:11Speaker 5: Terrible.
- 10:12Speaker 4: I know that's ridiculous.
- 10:15Speaker 1: Listen, if you want Taylor to produce your man about
- 10:18Speaker 1: he will do it all day, all night.
- 10:19Speaker 5: I mean, I got to see that. Was it really
- 10:21Speaker 5: was it really bad?
- 10:22Speaker 1: Oh, it was bad, though.
- 10:24Speaker 5: Yeah, he pimped it. Did Smoltz say anything about it?
- 10:27Speaker 3: No, they kind of just breezed right past it because
- 10:30Speaker 3: it was more of a feel-good story for the Brewers
- 10:32Speaker 3: because Woodruff was pitching.
- 10:35Speaker 5: Right, because he hadn't pitched. Yeah, that is ridiculous.
- 10:39Speaker 1: It's bad, though.
- 10:41Speaker 5: I will definitely use that. Nice job, Taylor.
- 10:43Speaker 1: Good job. All right, so he said he would definitely
- 10:46Speaker 1: use it. I love that he's gathering information on the
- 10:48Speaker 1: fly from Taylor and from me about that situation.
- 10:52Speaker 2: Let's now fast-forward a couple of days. Here is Doggy
- 10:55Speaker 2: on first take. It's 10-0.
- 10:58Speaker 6: This is game three of the World Series. And he
- 11:01Speaker 6: flips the bat like he won the... This is the
- 11:04Speaker 6: dumbest thing I've ever seen in my life. Listen, you've
- 11:06Speaker 6: got to have a little sense. If you're flipping about
- 11:09Speaker 6: the eighth inning, you hit a two-run homer, flip it
- 11:11Speaker 6: into the freaking move.
- 11:13Speaker 5: I have no problem with it.
- 11:14Speaker 2: But my God, you.
- 11:15Speaker 6: Are down 10-0 in a World Series game.
- 11:18Speaker 2: You've gotten one hit.
- 11:19Speaker 6: And that's Woodruff, who hasn't pitched forever.
- 11:22Speaker 5: And everybody likes him. He's had a million injuries.
- 11:24Speaker 4: Show him a little respect.
- 11:26Speaker 5: Oh, my goodness.
- 11:27Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 11:28Speaker 6: First time he hasn't hit at all in this World Series.
- 11:30Speaker 2: I bet Tampa. So that bothers me.
- 11:32Speaker 6: But gee whiz, that 10-0. Maybe a little more decorum
- 11:36Speaker 6: when your team's getting blown out in a World Series game.
- 11:39Speaker 6: That shocked me.
- 11:40Speaker 4: That is number two.
- 11:41Speaker 1: Taylor Terrikson.
- 11:42Speaker 4: What a special moment for you.
- 11:52Speaker 1: I mean, by the way, Doggie gave that take. Again,
- 11:55Speaker 1: just a reminder, he was on with us a couple
- 11:57Speaker 1: of days earlier. He was sleeping when it happened.
- 12:01Speaker 3: So yesterday when I was watching first take, it was
- 12:03Speaker 3: like when you're sitting at a movie theater and somebody
- 12:07Speaker 3: in the movie says the title and you're like, oh,
- 12:10Speaker 3: there's the title. That's exactly how I felt. Like I
- 12:13Speaker 3: knew I set Mad Dog up with the assist.
- 12:15Speaker 4: And once he delivered it, I was like, there's my star.
- 12:19Speaker 1: Did you feel like he needed to give you some
- 12:20Speaker 1: credit there? My guy Taylor told me about this. No.
- 12:23Speaker 7: No.
- 12:24Speaker 3: Mad Dog could have any take he wants from me
- 12:29Speaker 3: for the rest of eternity.
- 12:30Speaker 1: It's an honor.
- 12:31Speaker 3: I don't expect thank you. What's enough for me is
- 12:35Speaker 3: when he joins us and he goes, good point, Taylor.
- 12:38Speaker 3: When Dog says good point, Taylor, my year is made.
- 12:42Speaker 1: You're good. Dog knows that he got it from you.
- 12:45Speaker 1: You know that you gave it to Dog. You know
- 12:47Speaker 1: that Dog used it on first take, and therefore you
- 12:50Speaker 1: are good. You don't need any sort of credit. You
- 12:51Speaker 1: are fine. Just you and him know, okay? And that's it.
- 12:56Speaker 1: And that's one of the highest honors in sports media
- 12:58Speaker 1: is having Doggie take one of your takes and using
- 13:01Speaker 1: it on a larger platform.
- 13:03Speaker 3: So, Harry, if I could channel my Mad Dog history references,
- 13:09Speaker 3: Harry S. Truman, the 33rd president of the United States,
- 13:12Speaker 3: it is amazing what you could accomplish if you do
- 13:14Speaker 3: not care who gets the credit.
- 13:20Speaker 2: I got 20 years of proof behind that. So that's
- 13:25Speaker 2: a special moment.
- 13:26Speaker 1: Mikey, I texted him yesterday because we had Bob Costas on,
- 13:29Speaker 1: and he loves Costas. And I said, you had a
- 13:32Speaker 1: conversation with Bob Costas today, special day. And Taylor responded,
- 13:36Speaker 1: not to that. He just responded, but dog used my
- 13:40Speaker 1: take on first take. So for him, that's what made
- 13:43Speaker 1: it a special day. I think the combination of talking
- 13:46Speaker 1: to Costas and having doggy use your take on first
- 13:49Speaker 1: take is what made it special. It is a Think
- 14:03Speaker 1: About It Thursday here. So no radio, but we'll be
- 14:07Speaker 1: back on radio tomorrow. Izzy is going to join us,
- 14:09Speaker 1: but it is Thursday, and on Thursdays we like to think.
- 14:12Speaker 1: So let's do a Think About It Thursday here before
- 14:15Speaker 1: we get out of here for the day. Give us
- 14:16Speaker 1: the imaging, please.
- 14:20Speaker 7: You know that segment, Talk About It Tuesday, on Hockman, Crowder,
- 14:23Speaker 7: and Solero? This is like that, but bigger. Bigger.
- 14:27Speaker 2: And better.
- 14:29Speaker 7: And 48 hours later, this is Think About It Thursday.
- 14:36Speaker 1: All right, this is Taylor's attempt to counter-program a local
- 14:39Speaker 1: show down in Miami, Hockman, Solano, and Crowder.
- 14:43Speaker 2: What do you have for us today?
- 14:45Speaker 3: So it's funny that you should mention Bob Costas. Since
- 14:47Speaker 3: we had Bob Costas on, that's what made me think
- 14:49Speaker 3: about this for Think About It Thursday. What announcers would
- 14:54Speaker 3: you want for a specific situation? So I'm going to
- 14:56Speaker 3: give you guys the situation, and you tell me what
- 14:59Speaker 3: announcer you would want to deliver said situation.
- 15:03Speaker 1: Okay, good.
- 15:04Speaker 4: First situation, a walk-off home run.
- 15:09Speaker 1: Wow. Walk-off home run. Hmm. World Series walk-off or just
- 15:18Speaker 1: your run-of-the-mill walk-off?
- 15:20Speaker 4: We could do a World Series.
- 15:21Speaker 7: Okay.
- 15:22Speaker 1: Okay, you have an answer, Mikey? It's not going to
- 15:25Speaker 1: be Joe Davis, right? No, no.
- 15:29Speaker 5: I'm leaning.
- 15:32Speaker 5: I think I'm leaning Boog Shambi.
- 15:37Speaker 1: He's got a great home run call.
- 15:39Speaker 5: Joe Buck is up there.
- 15:42Speaker 1: Yeah, Joe Buck is up there. Joe Buck was the
- 15:44Speaker 1: first name I thought of was Joe Buck. I know
- 15:47Speaker 1: Boog has a great home run call, but Joe Buck.
- 15:51Speaker 1: A moment of that magnitude needs to have Joe Buck
- 15:55Speaker 1: calling it, at least for me, in baseball. That would
- 15:57Speaker 1: be the guy.
- 15:58Speaker 5: I'll give you Joe Buck. Joe Buck does something in
- 16:01Speaker 5: baseball that so few do very well. He lets the
- 16:04Speaker 5: moment breathe. He doesn't feel like he needs to talk.
- 16:06Speaker 5: We'll see you tomorrow night and just let the crowd
- 16:09Speaker 5: do the work. I love it.
- 16:10Speaker 1: Joe Buck's the answer. Vince Scully.
- 16:14Speaker 4: That's who Ricardo just suggested.
- 16:16Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, we're kind of leaving out the greatest
- 16:18Speaker 1: baseball broadcaster of all time.
- 16:20Speaker 5: But does it walk off? I think I want Joe
- 16:23Speaker 5: Buck more than Vince Scully. But calling a game, calling
- 16:26Speaker 5: a season, I want Vince Scully.
- 16:29Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. Without question, I want Vince Scully calling every
- 16:32Speaker 1: baseball game for the remainder of time. But for a
- 16:35Speaker 1: walk-off spot, I would still go Vince Scully, now that
- 16:37Speaker 1: I'm thinking about it. I would go with Vince Scully.
- 16:39Speaker 1: All right, next one, Taylor.
- 16:41Speaker 3: The next situation is a buzzer beater in the NBA Finals.
- 16:45Speaker 1: Wow. Bang.
- 16:47Speaker 5: That's all I'm going to say. Bang.
- 16:48Speaker 1: Bang. Yep. It's Marv Albert, I think, right? Or it's
- 16:51Speaker 1: Mike Breen. I'm going to go with Mike Breen.
- 16:53Speaker 4: Would Kevin Harlan like a word?
- 16:56Speaker 1: Kevin Harlan would like a word.
- 16:57Speaker 5: He probably would, and he belongs in the conversation. I'm
- 16:59Speaker 5: still going to say Breen.
- 17:00Speaker 3: Yes.
- 17:01Speaker 1: I'm not certain Kevin Harlan is not the most underrated
- 17:04Speaker 1: play-by-play guy in the history of our industry.
- 17:07Speaker 2: That's how good he is. He's not good.
- 17:10Speaker 1: He is great. But I would still want Bang in
- 17:13Speaker 1: that spot.
- 17:14Speaker 3: So I feel like we're going to have the same
- 17:16Speaker 3: consensus on this next one. A putt to win a major.
- 17:20Speaker 1: Nance.
- 17:21Speaker 4: Nance. Yeah.
- 17:23Speaker 1: Yes. Yes. Keep it moving. Yes.
- 17:25Speaker 5: And the journal on quiz would like a word, but
- 17:27Speaker 5: Nance wins.
- 17:28Speaker 1: No. He wouldn't like a word. Nance.
- 17:30Speaker 2: Those are Nance's words. And he needs to be calling that.
- 17:33Speaker 1: Yes.
- 17:34Speaker 4: The next one.
- 17:36Speaker 3: The hockey golden goal in overtime. Let's keep it consistent
- 17:40Speaker 3: and say Stanley Cup finals.
- 17:42Speaker 1: Doc Emmerich.
- 17:45Speaker 5: I don't even know why we're discussing it.
- 17:47Speaker 1: It's Doc. Kenny Albert.
- 17:48Speaker 4: Would Kenny Albert like a word?
- 17:50Speaker 1: Kenny Albert might like a word.
- 17:52Speaker 5: And I'm sure Kenny Albert might even say Doc Emmerich.
- 17:56Speaker 1: Kenny Albert would choose Doc Emmerich. I think Bob Costas
- 17:59Speaker 1: would choose Doc Emmerich. I know Al Michaels would choose
- 18:01Speaker 1: Doc Emmerich. And Kenny Albert and Al Michaels have called
- 18:04Speaker 1: the two most famous hockey games in the history of
- 18:07Speaker 1: the sport.
- 18:08Speaker 2: And they would both choose, I guarantee you, they would
- 18:10Speaker 2: both choose Doc Emmerich.
- 18:12Speaker 1: And it's the right choice.
- 18:13Speaker 3: So I wrote down for me Sam Rosen, but I
- 18:15Speaker 3: understand why other people wouldn't write Sam Rosen because it's
- 18:18Speaker 3: the same thing for my walk-off home run. I wrote
- 18:20Speaker 3: down John Sterling and Michael Kess.
- 18:24Speaker 1: Yes. Sam Rosen would say, by the way, your dad
- 18:27Speaker 1: is a barber, cuts his hair. Sam Rosen would say,
- 18:30Speaker 1: I don't want to call that. Doc Emmerich needs to
- 18:32Speaker 1: call that. That's what he would say.
- 18:33Speaker 2: Wow.
- 18:35Speaker 1: Yes, he would. I'm telling you.
- 18:36Speaker 3: The next one is a game-winning touchdown for a big
- 18:40Speaker 3: upset or national title in college football.
- 18:44Speaker 2: College football.
- 18:46Speaker 3: Wow.
- 18:46Speaker 1: Ball time here, huh? Yep.
- 18:48Speaker 3: Because for me, I am between two people. I'm between
- 18:54Speaker 3: Brent Musburger.
- 18:55Speaker 5: That was my first guess.
- 18:57Speaker 4: And I'm between.
- 18:58Speaker 1: And Keith Jackson. Ooh.
- 19:00Speaker 3: Keith Jackson is on this list, but... I had Sean McDonough.
- 19:04Speaker 3: I feel like Sean McDonough, he meets the moment, and
- 19:07Speaker 3: there's some times where McDonough's voice cracks, and you would
- 19:12Speaker 3: be like, I don't want to hear my announcer's voice cracking,
- 19:15Speaker 3: but it cracks at the perfect amount to be like,
- 19:18Speaker 3: oh my God, this is the moment.
- 19:22Speaker 5: I feel bad for Sean McDonough cause he could probably
- 19:24Speaker 5: finish second on every single one of these lists and never,
- 19:28Speaker 5: he's always a bridesmaid, never a bride because he is
- 19:30Speaker 5: so versatile. He does it all so well. But when
- 19:35Speaker 5: you say college football, I immediately, my, my initial thought,
- 19:38Speaker 5: Brent Musburger.
- 19:40Speaker 2: Uh, I would go just to keep it different here,
- 19:42Speaker 2: just to be different. Brent's a great choice.
- 19:44Speaker 1: I'm not certain, but Keith Jackson, when I think college
- 19:46Speaker 1: football and the great play-by-play voices of all time, for me,
- 19:50Speaker 1: it's Keith Jackson.
- 19:52Speaker 4: Would Tessitore like a word?
- 19:54Speaker 1: He would. But, again. He would. He'd like a word. Yes,
- 20:00Speaker 1: I think Joe Tess would tell you Brent Musburger, yes. Now, listen, Gladiators,
- 20:05Speaker 1: I would want Joe Tess. Some weird, you know, mini-putting
- 20:08Speaker 1: game like Steph Curry had, maybe Joe Tess. But no,
- 20:12Speaker 1: not Joe Tess for this. No, this is reserved for
- 20:15Speaker 1: one of two people, and that's Musburger or Keith Jackson.
- 20:19Speaker 3: The last one that I have for today's Think About
- 20:21Speaker 3: It Thursday.
- 20:23Speaker 1: As a Hail.
- 20:23Speaker 3: Mary in the Super Bowl, let's up the ante and
- 20:26Speaker 3: let's say a Hail Mary in the Super Bowl to
- 20:29Speaker 3: win the Super Bowl.
- 20:32Speaker 5: I have a question. I have a follow-up, Izzy style.
- 20:36Speaker 5: Do I get this person at their peak?
- 20:39Speaker 1: Yes.
- 20:39Speaker 3: Then give me Al Michaels. You would assume you're getting
- 20:43Speaker 3: Vince Scully at his peak and not Vince Scully today.
- 20:46Speaker 5: Yes, I would imagine. I'll take Al Michaels then.
- 20:50Speaker 1: I've spent the entire time thinking about if an actual
- 20:52Speaker 1: Super Bowl ended on an actual Hail Mary.
- 20:55Speaker 4: It would be Rodgers, right?
- 20:56Speaker 1: It has to be. Oh, yes. Yes, he's the greatest
- 21:00Speaker 1: thrower of the Hail Mary of all time. Put it
- 21:03Speaker 1: on the bowl. You're going Al Michaels there, huh? Mm-hmm.
- 21:09Speaker 2: I mean, Musburger called games.
- 21:11Speaker 1: In the 80s. He was great at it.
- 21:14Speaker 5: I already picked Musburger for something else.
- 21:16Speaker 4: I think Harlan again would like a word.
- 21:18Speaker 1: He would. He would.
- 21:20Speaker 5: And I could be convinced, but I'm going to go Al.
- 21:23Speaker 1: Yeah, I could be.
- 21:24Speaker 5: The problem is what we're getting with Al right now
- 21:29Speaker 5: is a lot different than what Al I'm talking about.
- 21:35Speaker 1: Yes, but I'm not certain Harlan wouldn't be the guy
- 21:38Speaker 1: I would want calling the NBA final shot. I know
- 21:41Speaker 1: we said bang Mike Breen, it's easy, but Kevin Harlan
- 21:44Speaker 1: might be the best caller of basketball I've ever heard.
- 21:46Speaker 1: He's unbelievable. Wow, I don't know who to choose here.
- 21:51Speaker 3: So in this situation, since I know he doesn't call
- 21:54Speaker 3: like Super Bowls per se, but the situation, a Hail
- 21:58Speaker 3: Mary to win the Super Bowl, are you considering Gus Johnson?
- 22:03Speaker 1: I am, yes. Just for that play. Like whoever's calling
- 22:08Speaker 1: the game comes out of the booth, they go to
- 22:10Speaker 1: a pen. Like a reliever, yes. Yes. and Gus Johnson
- 22:14Speaker 1: comes in just to call that final play the Hail
- 22:17Speaker 1: Mary in the.
- 22:18Speaker 2: Event that it's a touchdown. I'm good with that. In fact,
- 22:20Speaker 2: we should start doing that in broadcasting.
- 22:23Speaker 5: I got them in two booths, and the guy just
- 22:26Speaker 5: takes the sliders and goes, whoop, let's pop that one
- 22:29Speaker 5: down and that one up on this play.
- 22:31Speaker 7: Yes.
- 22:32Speaker 1: Like, meaning I could see, like, Vince Scully, you guys
- 22:34Speaker 1: are right, Vince Scully calling all the games, but that
- 22:38Speaker 1: walk-off homer, you got to go to the bed, and
- 22:41Speaker 1: Vince Scully would never be taken out, but he would
- 22:44Speaker 1: have to come out, and someone else would have to
- 22:46Speaker 1: come in and call it, you know?
- 22:47Speaker 3: Listen, Mike Monaco, you've done a great job. through three
- 22:51Speaker 3: quarters and most of the fourth quarter. Here comes our
- 22:55Speaker 3: enter Sandman, our Mariano Rivera.
- 22:59Speaker 1: I'm not certain Gus shouldn't be calling all the final calls,
- 23:02Speaker 1: all the biggest plays across sports, except for golf. That's
- 23:06Speaker 1: Nance's territory.
- 23:08Speaker 3: We should work on an app where it's just a
- 23:11Speaker 3: big calls app, where once a game gets to a
- 23:14Speaker 3: big call, Gus Johnson is just waiting somewhere. It's almost
- 23:17Speaker 3: like Red Zone, but you're reverse engineering it to where
- 23:21Speaker 3: the situation has to reach a certain level, and then
- 23:23Speaker 3: once it reaches a certain threshold, Gus Johnson is now
- 23:26Speaker 3: calling it.
- 23:28Speaker 1: So why are we doing it on an app, though?
- 23:32Speaker 4: Because we need the technology, I think.
- 23:37Speaker 2: So you want to create an app where we.
- 23:41Speaker 1: The biggest calls in the history of sports, whoever called them,
- 23:44Speaker 1: the voice is replaced by Gus Johnson? No, no, no.
- 23:46Speaker 4: So, okay, now I see the confusion.
- 23:49Speaker 3: So this app you keep with you in case a
- 23:52Speaker 3: game reaches a big moment, like current games. Like say
- 23:56Speaker 3: we're watching USC-Ohio State this weekend, and it's coming down
- 24:01Speaker 3: to the last two minutes. We have Gus Johnson on demand.
- 24:05Speaker 3: somewhere in a booth, and he's getting ready to call
- 24:08Speaker 3: the USC-Ohio State game. So you just mute your TV,
- 24:11Speaker 3: you turn on the app, and now Gus Johnson's calling
- 24:14Speaker 3: the game you're watching currently on TV.
- 24:17Speaker 1: So if you stay on TV, you're not getting Gus Johnson,
- 24:19Speaker 1: but if you use the app, you are getting Gus Johnson.
- 24:21Speaker 4: Correct, correct.
- 24:22Speaker 1: Gus on demand. Because there has to be choices here.
- 24:25Speaker 1: What if Gus Johnson is calling another game, though?
- 24:27Speaker 3: No, this is the point. Gus Johnson has to live
- 24:30Speaker 3: in our booth.
- 24:31Speaker 5: Gus Johnson on demand.
- 24:34Speaker 1: I like the idea. Get on it.
