- 0:09Let's explore the power of showing up with intention and
- 0:12energy each day. This is for those who seek to
- 0:15make life truly meaningful. Get ready for impact.
- 0:22Hello, welcome to the show. Today, in this episode, we are
- 0:26going to talk about voting, but not voting in the next election.
- 0:31Voting for your future self. I I often talk to clients about
- 0:37the idea of identity. Specifically, one of the things
- 0:41that we work on is embodying the identity of the person that you
- 0:44want to be now rather than waiting for yourself to somehow
- 0:48magically become that person in the future.
- 0:52Obviously our experiences and our circumstances will play a
- 0:55role in shaping who we are, but often we'll say things to
- 0:59ourselves like this. I'll be a real leader when I
- 1:03have a higher title in my company.
- 1:05I'll be a great spouse when I find that right person.
- 1:09I'll be healthy when I can lose this extra £50.
- 1:13I'll be a musician when I play over 75 gigs.
- 1:17The problem with those scenarios is that often we don't prepare
- 1:22or practice being the real leader or the great spouse or
- 1:26the healthy person or the musician or whatever it might
- 1:28be. And so when that time comes that
- 1:31the event we've been waiting for arrives, we're not ready and we
- 1:36don't actually embody that identity, not in the way that we
- 1:41could. So I want to argue for something
- 1:44else. I want to make an argument that
- 1:46we can actually step into the identity of the person that we
- 1:50want to become before we hit any of those milestones or those
- 1:55perceived necessary achievements that we have in our minds.
- 2:00I remember one of my mentors early on in coaching, she said
- 2:04to me, if you're going to be a coach, you have to fully claim
- 2:07it. You have to embody the identity
- 2:10of being a master coach if you really want to do this.
- 2:13And that's who you want to be. And I didn't actually fully
- 2:17understand what she meant at the time, but I sure as hell do now.
- 2:22I had to start acting and thinking like the identity I
- 2:26wanted to become. And she was saying this because
- 2:29we had been talking about how the coaching world is becoming
- 2:33more and more saturated. And she was saying, if you are
- 2:36going to leave your mark, if you are going to do what you want to
- 2:39do, you have to fully claim it and embody that.
- 2:43James Clear talks about this in his book Atomic Habits, which is
- 2:47everywhere, and you've probably read it.
- 2:48And if you haven't, I don't know if you've been under a rock, but
- 2:51this guy's everywhere. And he talks about casting votes
- 2:55for the type of person that you want to be.
- 2:58So every action you take is a vote for the type of person that
- 3:02you wish to become. And he says that the most
- 3:04practical way to change who you are is to change what you do and
- 3:09reframe this idea that your future self is way out there
- 3:13rather than right in front of you.
- 3:16Instead, think about it this way.
- 3:17Every time you write a page, you are a writer.
- 3:21Every time you practice the guitar, you are a musician.
- 3:24Every time you go to batting practice, you are an athlete.
- 3:27Every time you encourage your team or your colleagues or your
- 3:30employees, you are a leader. And every time you choose to
- 3:35perform a certain action, every time you act out a good habit or
- 3:39a bad habit, it's a vote for that identity, that future
- 3:43version of you. And this is an idea that I love.
- 3:47James Clear says that when you think about identity this way,
- 3:50there's great news. And the great news is that you
- 3:52don't have to be perfect. Who doesn't want to hear that,
- 3:55right? Because in any election, they're
- 3:59going to be votes for both sides.
- 4:01You don't have to have a unanimous vote to win an
- 4:04election. You just need a majority.
- 4:06So it doesn't matter if you cast a few votes for bad behavior or
- 4:09bad habits. Your goal is to simply win the
- 4:13majority of the time. And I love that it takes so much
- 4:17of the pressure off to be this perfect version of yourself,
- 4:21which we know is an illusion anyway.
- 4:23So throw that out the window and just say I need to win the
- 4:26majority. I love this idea of casting
- 4:29votes for the version of the person that we want to be.
- 4:33Back to what my mentor said to me about coaching, I didn't
- 4:36exactly know what it would look like to be a master coach in her
- 4:39words, and I'm still learning every single day.
- 4:41But at the time I thought to myself, well, I can start to
- 4:45take actions like 1. And so I would ask myself in
- 4:49this scenario, what would a master coach do?
- 4:52How would a master coach deal with this client situation and I
- 4:56think about this in terms of being a business owner as well.
- 4:59How would a successful business owner forecast, how would they
- 5:03self manage in this situation or in terms of a leader, how would
- 5:06a great leader handle this conflict, etcetera.
- 5:11Every behavior, every habit that I align with those identities is
- 5:15a vote casted for those identities.
- 5:19In my Next Level Nutrition group, we have a virtual group
- 5:22coaching meeting every Monday. And oftentimes in those meetings
- 5:26you will hear Sarah and I say, envision your future self.
- 5:30Who do you want to be? And then we talk about the
- 5:32behaviors that align with that future vision of you.
- 5:36It's like casting votes for that identity.
- 5:39And we remind people that every time they meal prep or they go
- 5:43to the gym, or they do a strength training session or
- 5:46join a group fitness class, or they choose Whole Foods over
- 5:49processed foods, whatever it might be, they are casting votes
- 5:53towards their identity of being a healthy person.
- 5:56And this is so powerful for people to make that shift.
- 6:00When we identify with who we want to be and align our actions
- 6:04and behaviors around that, you oftentimes see more success.
- 6:08You see more sustained long term results.
- 6:11You see better outcomes. The shift starts from the inside
- 6:16and then the behaviors and the habits and therefore the
- 6:19outcomes start to match. And there's so many ways to cast
- 6:25votes for your future self. To start, ask yourself the
- 6:28question, what would blank kind of person do and insert the type
- 6:34of person that you want to be. Do you want to be a calm parent
- 6:39or a compassionate leader? Do you want to be steady under
- 6:42pressure? Do you want to be a thoughtful
- 6:44friend? Do you want to be a power couple
- 6:47with your spouse? I mean, the possibilities are
- 6:50endless, but it's about you aligning with who you want to
- 6:53be. You can start stacking wins,
- 6:56start doing the things that that kind of identity would do.
- 7:00Every time you do something that matches with who you want to be,
- 7:03that's a vote, that's a win in your favor.
- 7:06That's evidence and confidence in who you are becoming.
- 7:11And then of course, surround yourself with people who emulate
- 7:15the behaviors and the values that you want to align with.
- 7:18Because we know that when you spend time with people or in
- 7:21groups or clubs or organizations and the behaviors that you
- 7:25desire are considered to be normal, you get to soak up those
- 7:28behavior. It becomes more commonplace for
- 7:30you and it's a lot easier to start to behave in a similar
- 7:34way. More evidence of wins, more
- 7:37votes casted for the person that you're wanting to be.
- 7:41So the question today is, who do I want to be?
- 7:45What is the identity that I want to embrace and embody?
- 7:49Because when you know that you can start casting your votes and
- 7:54that's a really powerful way to make impact in your life.
- 7:58I hope that this episode helps. I hope it spurs on some thought
