- 1:29Well, bring us both things. Good morning, everybody.
- 1:31Keith Angle here for national streaming sports and a brand new
- 1:35show called Jack and Keith's Weekend Playbook.
- 1:39Good morning, Jack Hirsch, How are you?
- 1:41Hey, good morning. It feels like opening day,
- 1:43Keith. It does.
- 1:45It's it's as as and again, I played the let me kill the music
- 1:49here. I did play the National
- 1:53Streaming Sports Open. This is technically the last day
- 1:58that you may see it, where you're seeing it.
- 2:00We'll give you guys some updates.
- 2:02We're talking with, as you know, our illustrious leader, Mac
- 2:05McGrath passed away here, I don't know, a month ago.
- 2:08I guess Jack, we miss Mac a lot and we've been trying to make
- 2:12decisions on what to do with his vision and we don't want
- 2:14National Streaming Sports to go away.
- 2:16So we're trying to do what we can to keep the Roku presence if
- 2:22it doesn't, national streaming sports and the content at least
- 2:27that I create and Jack creates will continue in in some form or
- 2:30another. I can promise you that.
- 2:32And we'll keep you guys informed every step of the way this week.
- 2:36And this show, brand new show, as I said, Jack and Keith's
- 2:41weekend playbook. You can see it right there.
- 2:43Smart takes a lot of opinions, real sports talk.
- 2:46It's kinda, I don't want to say replacing Mac and Jack because I
- 2:50don't think you can replace a show like Mac and Jack.
- 2:53But we're this is going to be the new Monday, Friday format at
- 2:578:00 to 9:00 AM. It'll be Jack and myself and
- 3:01we'll recap some of the stories over the weekend.
- 3:04And oh, the story didn't necessarily have to have
- 3:06happened exactly over the weekend because there'll be some
- 3:08stuff we get into nostalgia wise and whatnot on Mondays.
- 3:13We'll recap the the important news there and also on Fridays
- 3:17we'll talk about the same kind of things, but leading into the
- 3:19weekend. And Jack, I'm I'm happy to be
- 3:22doing this with you. We've always enjoyed working
- 3:25with you. The last five years we've worked
- 3:26a lot together. It's not like our first time.
- 3:28But I've got to make a little bit of an adjustment for my end
- 3:32because Mac was old school and you're more more like new
- 3:35school. Mac.
- 3:37Mac didn't believe in women's boxing.
- 3:40Mac didn't believe that boxers, when they walked into the ring,
- 3:44should have all this music going on.
- 3:46He was old school. I mean, Mac believed in the old
- 3:50fashioned uniforms. Keith, you're with the new
- 3:52logos. You probably support these teams
- 3:54who have all these crazy new uniforms you don't even know.
- 3:59How do they invent these new uniforms?
- 4:01I like the old uniforms. You're going to find out that
- 4:04I'm much more old school than probably Mac was.
- 4:09The logo could be a work in progress as well.
- 4:12I'm playing around with AI and ChatGPT, so we're trying to get
- 4:15some new things and you guys will see some new logos.
- 4:18Well, we're going to experiment with some things, some openings
- 4:20and whatnot, so we'll have some fun and Jack will find out that
- 4:25I am as old school as it gets because I wish it was 19.
- 4:29You may wish it was earlier. I wish it was like 1975 again,
- 4:33and I'm not going to get that. So.
- 4:35So who's with us this morning? Let's say a couple of quick good
- 4:38mornings while we're here. Hope Sonia's with us this
- 4:41morning. Good morning, Sonia.
- 4:42Good to see you and she's. Here.
- 4:44Good morning, Sonia. Thank you and I want she she
- 4:47says she's sharing the show. I want to thank everybody
- 4:49watching this morning on the national streaming Roku channel
- 4:53on the on my Facebook platform, my personal page and the TGI
- 4:57sports talk page. We're also on you YouTube.
- 4:59We're also on Twitter and I'll be sharing later on to all the
- 5:03groups that are so kind to let me share my content.
- 5:05John Gonzalez, it's the sports authorities.
- 5:09Greg Rawlings And when applies, guys, if there's a cap that
- 5:11doesn't apply to your group, you know, I'm not going to share it.
- 5:14Greg Rawlings at America's Pastime.
- 5:17Bottom line, sports flow in the gang.
- 5:19Let's talk sports. Ken Krause and Golf Buds, sports
- 5:23of all sorts and so many others. There's got 100 groups I shared
- 5:26through and we're going to get so many views.
- 5:28Jack, you're not. You're it's going to knock your
- 5:30socks off. So anyway, good morning, Sonia.
- 5:34Good to have you with us. Good morning, Sonia.
- 5:36I think it's proud of me the way I was hearing all this out about
- 5:40the new content, the new shows, without cutting in and talking
- 5:44about sports the way I did with her.
- 5:46I learned from Sonia. And we hope to bring a lot.
- 5:49We hope to bring a lot of our people along.
- 5:51And I know they miss Mac, but hopefully they'll like us.
- 5:54And I've got a lot of my people. Rick Sherlock, who's been he's
- 5:57an old classmate, a little bit older than me, but old classmate
- 6:00at Perth has been a follower of mine and he and a big follower
- 6:03of national streaming sports. We thank him.
- 6:06Michael Got. I'll tell you the reach of this
- 6:07show. Michael Got is one of our number
- 6:09one fans. He's over in the UK.
- 6:12UK Michael, I write for Boxing News in the UK.
- 6:16If you're a boxing fan there, you're probably familiar with me
- 6:20there. TuneIn with us, Michael on
- 6:22Mondays and Fridays. Rick's with us.
- 6:24You don't get more old school than Keith.
- 6:26Maybe he'll Rick has been known to take those shots at you,
- 6:29Jack. So.
- 6:30Rick, they don't get more impulsive than Keith.
- 6:32A couple of bad games. He wants to manage a fire.
- 6:35He's old school and that's them. I don't know, Aaron Boone's been
- 6:39here a little more in a couple of games.
- 6:40I'm just staying with us. Good morning, Linda.
- 6:43Hey, Linda. How are you good to have you
- 6:46with us. Hope you're doing well and
- 6:49perfect year 1975. I just picked one in the 70s.
- 6:52My wife says I got to get out of the 70s.
- 6:54I dress like I'm in the 70s It's terrible.
- 6:58CACA big follower of ours runs our fantasy Football League over
- 7:03there on TGI sports talk. Thank you for tuning in CA and
- 7:06also that's but Sonia, again, so proud of you Jack.
- 7:10Well. I learned from Sonia.
- 7:12You got to, you know, I got to listen a little more.
- 7:15Apparently I just showed up today, that's all.
- 7:17So I'm just kidding. Anyway, Jack, for a normal show,
- 7:22there's lots, there's lots to talk about.
- 7:24I want to I want to get started. Let's start real quick with Don
- 7:30Staley and the Knicks. I we talked about it the
- 7:34yesterday morning and you know, as we, we do so many shows on
- 7:37these on the network, it's impossible not to kind of repeat
- 7:40topics, but you know, sometimes new content comes up.
- 7:43I don't see anything new. First of all, I don't know that
- 7:45Don Staley's interested in the Nick job.
- 7:48I don't know the Nicks have contacted Don Staley.
- 7:50All I know is they put her name on their list.
- 7:54And this just to me, we're just looking at how, how, how that's
- 8:02the word I'm looking for a dysfunctional.
- 8:04This whole search has been from the very beginning, from the
- 8:08firing of Tibbs, which was dysfunctional in itself to the
- 8:12his looking for his replacement. What are your thoughts here?
- 8:16My thoughts, You know, this Dawn Staley talk, is it really
- 8:20getting traction? It's getting enough for us to
- 8:23talk about. But who exactly put her name
- 8:27out? Did she say she would be
- 8:29interested? Did anyone from the next front
- 8:32office, you know, contact her? And she hasn't been in for an
- 8:36interview as far as we hear from everything we've heard.
- 8:41And it's been kind of quiet, like what's taking the Knicks so
- 8:45long? Make a dawn decision finally,
- 8:49unless there's a candidate that they're waiting on, unless they
- 8:53think they can still try one of these big name coaches away from
- 8:58another team. But what exactly are they
- 9:01waiting for? So then are the Knicks thinking
- 9:04in terms they're going to do a low level hire and hope one of
- 9:07the big name coaches become available?
- 9:10But you know, the truth of the matter, Keith.
- 9:12It's not just the next. The NBA is dysfunctional.
- 9:16Look at all the recent NBA championship coaches who a
- 9:22couple of years later they're gone.
- 9:24They're gone from their team from Frank Vogel to Nick Nurse
- 9:28and so on. They don't they long you win a
- 9:32championship, now you So what are what are they going to do?
- 9:37Exact? Did they reach out for Rick
- 9:38Pitino? No Did they reach out to Dan
- 9:41Hurley? No, Jay Wright took himself out
- 9:45of the running immediately. What's really left?
- 9:48If you want someone like a Mike Brown, hire him.
- 9:51At this point, what are we waiting for?
- 9:54You know a couple of things there.
- 9:57Steve Kerr is the only guy I can think of who's won a
- 9:59championship in the last 10 years.
- 10:01He still has a job and but to go back to Don Staley, I've I went
- 10:08and searched in great detail yesterday and I could not find
- 10:12one item about Dawn Staley initiating this, having any
- 10:17conversation about this, having any comment about this.
- 10:21To me, this is all the Knicks. And part of me thinks, and I
- 10:23said this at the end of the conversation yesterday, part of
- 10:26me thinks this is just a smokescreen for the Knicks to
- 10:29say we, we even went outside the box, we did everything we could.
- 10:33And then they're going to announce Mike Brown as the coach
- 10:36of the Knicks. Well, they're just two hires now
- 10:40that could create a big splash outside the Dawn Staley.
- 10:43And I doubt if they're going to hire Dawn Staley because it's
- 10:46true. For the matter is, even though
- 10:48she's been a great WNBA coach, does she know that XS and OS on
- 10:53an NBA level? Because I would think it's a bit
- 10:57more intense than the WNBA. But you get assistant coaches.
- 11:01I'll be honest about it. I could coach an NBA team if you
- 11:05give me high profile assistance and I just listen to whatever
- 11:09they say, whatever they tell me to do as a head coach and stay.
- 11:13I'll just repeat, you know, in that sense.
- 11:17But it's the only two hires that realistically can make a splash
- 11:23at this point who would be available.
- 11:25And I'm not talking about the Rick Pitino to the Dan Hurley's
- 11:28like I mentioned, but because they're not coming over to be
- 11:31Jeff Van Gundy would be available in all probability and
- 11:35Mark Jackson. Now, if you want the best of
- 11:38both worlds, offer the job to Jeff Van Gundy, who's very close
- 11:44to Mark Jackson. The Mark Jackson will come
- 11:46aboard as his main assistant or maybe you have Stan Van Gundy
- 11:52joined Jeff as his main assistant.
- 11:54Jeff Van Gundy and Mark Jackson as his main assistant.
- 11:59That wouldn't that would make the biggest splash.
- 12:01That would go over well. Even you give the head job to
- 12:04Mark Jackson, even though I'm not the biggest fan of that,
- 12:07believe me, not at all. That would create, but that
- 12:10would create a little bit of a buzz.
- 12:12That Jackson, former great St. John's player who had success
- 12:19paving the way for Golden State to win the championships that he
- 12:23comes to the Knicks, former Knick player.
- 12:26It would create a little bit of a buzz, but there's nothing out
- 12:29there to create a buzz. No, nothing else.
- 12:32Out there. Listen, I'd be all for Jeff Van
- 12:35Gundy, but one of his other good friends is Tom Thibodeau.
- 12:39Tom Thibodeau kind of learned under, one of the guys he
- 12:42learned under was Jeff Van Gundy.
- 12:44And I don't know if he's going to come in and take a job that
- 12:46they just fired a friend of his and under these circumstances in
- 12:51my mind, so. Well, well, well, how about
- 12:53this? I mean, the biggest splash of
- 12:56all, of course, would be to invite Tom Thibodeau back.
- 13:00They look, we got a little emotional.
- 13:03Shouldn't have done it on reflection.
- 13:05That's why we didn't hire another coach immediately.
- 13:09We had misgivings after making the move.
- 13:12And extend Thibodeau one extra year, you know, on his contract
- 13:18to kind of make it up to him. And I think tips, I don't know
- 13:21what his mindset would be. Maybe he wouldn't come back
- 13:24under any circumstance. But look, it's easy to tell
- 13:27someone else what to do. It would be easy to tell tips
- 13:31don't come back under any circumstance.
- 13:34But what's out there for tips? He's 67 years old.
- 13:37It's either the Knicks or retire.
- 13:39And this is his opinion. Chances are he would come back,
- 13:43he would accept the apology it it with a year and that one more
- 13:49year added on to his contract as a matter of goodwill.
- 13:53You know, you kind of take it from there.
- 13:56It'd be that would be an odd move to make, but I listen.
- 13:59Maybe they should do it and have an old timers game.
- 14:01That could be like 1978 when the Yankees well announced Thibodeau
- 14:04is going to be the coach. You know, in 2027 or something.
- 14:09Wow, that, that would be great. I mean, that would create the
- 14:11biggest buzz of all and. You remember that day in 1978,
- 14:16don't you remember like was yesterday, I fell out of my
- 14:18chair. Yeah, but but but what happened
- 14:22that I what you're talking about is when George Stein friend
- 14:25abroad, Billy Martin back on Old Timers day, he fired him in the
- 14:301978 season, but he said he'd return as manager in 1980s,
- 14:37which made no sense in the year and 1/2 he was going to return
- 14:40as manager. I mean he didn't make any sense.
- 14:43But by the way, he did return sooner than that in 1979.
- 14:47He did a 1979 is not a good. Year Reggie Jackson felt
- 14:52completely blindsided by it because he couldn't stand Billy
- 14:56Martin. And then, you know, what can you
- 14:59say? We're going to get into Michael.
- 15:01I'll get into your comment when we get into some boxing with
- 15:05Jack because that looks like a boxing related question.
- 15:07So I'll get into that in a little bit and any comments I'll
- 15:11go back. Michael's a boxing fan.
- 15:13I see the comments in the backstage.
- 15:15We could talk some serious boxing later.
- 15:18We'll go there in just a little bit for sure.
- 15:20Let's finish this part of the segment up.
- 15:24Dawn only played the WA did not coach.
- 15:28Listen, she can coach, I have no doubt.
- 15:30About it. Excuse me?
- 15:33Just so you know, and again, I got in a little trouble, not in
- 15:35a little trouble, but we had a little because I get keep
- 15:38getting miscommunication. I like Sunday stream of
- 15:40consciousness. I never said Dawn Staley
- 15:42couldn't coach. She could coach.
- 15:44The question is whether it's she could coach a bunch of prima
- 15:47Donna guys in the NBA when she's never done that.
- 15:49And by the way, Carl Anthony Towns already had a laugh at
- 15:53this whole topic yesterday. So that's the kind of thing that
- 15:57I don't think they'll take her seriously.
- 16:00They should because she can coach and maybe this would be a
- 16:03good move, but I can. Get used to anyone after a
- 16:06while. You know it would be another
- 16:07great high if they reached out to him and put a full court
- 16:11press on them and made them the highest paid coach in the NBA to
- 16:15satisfy his ego. I know this sounds crazy.
- 16:18Magic Johnson, because he said if he could get an ownership
- 16:24stake in the next and, and that would mean as a minority owner,
- 16:28of course he would do that. He would flip over from the
- 16:32Lakers to the next. And Magic is a minority owner
- 16:36for the Washington Commanders that he's in and he's a minority
- 16:41owner with the LA Dodgers, the Magic like stuff like that.
- 16:45But if you make Magic a minority owner and allow him to coach as
- 16:50well, and the NBA would sign off on that match, that's coaching
- 16:54experience, OK, Yes, coaching experience.
- 16:57He's a big student of the game, and he would command tremendous
- 17:01respect, and he knows how to deal with people.
- 17:05You convince Magic and they have a roster.
- 17:07The next step is ready to win. And also, Magic might feel that
- 17:12the little unfinished business from, you know, his overall
- 17:17experiences with the Lakers, even though he still roots for
- 17:20the Lakers, there's maybe a little unfinished business.
- 17:25Perfect. Listen, at the end of the day,
- 17:28we're going to do all this talking.
- 17:29We're going to put Mike Brown as a coach, and that's really sad.
- 17:31But what are you going? To do gone through all this,
- 17:34Mike Brown comes on you like a good solid coach.
- 17:37By the way, Mike Brown is a solid.
- 17:40Coach yes, but the stated goal of this was to get to the next
- 17:45level and Mike Brown's that that guy.
- 17:47Yeah, it's like your college is being sent to compete in an
- 17:51academic contest with all the colleges in the country and
- 17:56you're sending a student that's an A minus to a student, you
- 18:00know, down there transcript and you're not sending you a plus.
- 18:04I mean, it's a Mike Brown's a good solid culture.
- 18:07It's culture of the year. I mean not good culture.
- 18:10I I want to throw something out there too, and I'm I'm really
- 18:14this this topic until Friday, when there's probably more news
- 18:17we can jump back into it, but I'm pretty much done here.
- 18:20Any last thoughts on this? I say Don Staley Wolf will not
- 18:22be the coach, No. No, I don't think John Staley is
- 18:25going to get an interview, but it but but I'm just saying a
- 18:29high profile women's coach, let's say hypothetically half,
- 18:34half stomach with all the coaching experience, OK with the
- 18:38Tennessee Volunteers was available.
- 18:41You mean to tell me the men wouldn't listen to Pat's summit?
- 18:46Come on. Well, she's dead, so I don't
- 18:48think they're going to. Listen to no, no, no.
- 18:50But I'm saying had Pat's, if Pat's summit were round, I mean,
- 18:53what a higher that would be. You know what, I I agree with
- 18:57you and I know yesterday you mentioned, I guess I'm not going
- 19:00to end this yet. Yesterday you mentioned, you
- 19:02know the, the correlation between the, the, I'll say the
- 19:05private sector, right, the real world sector.
- 19:07Men work for women all the time. They do and it's it's not a
- 19:12problem. It might have been when it first
- 19:15started, but sports isn't the real world and got these
- 19:19testosterone fueled locker rooms are a lot different.
- 19:24And I'm not saying she can't do it or somebody else can't do it.
- 19:28I'm just going to say it's not going to be an easy transition.
- 19:32And in New York with the Great Expectations, this is probably
- 19:35not the place to start. That's all I'm saying.
- 19:39When you have a team that's ready to win, that's where you
- 19:43want to start. That's the best possible
- 19:47scenario when a coach comes in. I mean, look at Chauncey Billups
- 19:52at Portland. He takes over.
- 19:54Bad team. And sometimes these bad teams,
- 19:58especially in the NBA, unless they get lucky and draft a high
- 20:03profile player who makes an immediate impact, they're going
- 20:07to be in a rut for years. The years and years, if you
- 20:11could go to a team that's in a situation where they're ready to
- 20:14win right now and they're not a team that's descending like the
- 20:19Milwaukee Bucks, the perhaps the Philadelphia 76ers.
- 20:24You want a job like the Knicks. It's it's about the best job you
- 20:27can get in the NBAI mean, the only better job is to get if you
- 20:32get a job with a team like the San Antonio Spurs, you know,
- 20:36with all that great young talent led by Wembe, that that would be
- 20:40the only drop out of the Dallas Mavericks Cooper flag.
- 20:43That's what drives me crazy. People say no Jason Kidd, let
- 20:47him come to the Knicks. If you're chasing Kidd, why
- 20:50would you want to go to the Knicks with your future?
- 20:54You know a Copa flag that Dallas, Anthony Davis, Kyrie
- 20:58Irving, you have a great bench. Well, I agree.
- 21:02Oh, he's also got a contract. By the way, these I this could
- 21:05be him and Billy Donovan. Both are still theoretically in
- 21:08play because they're both position positioning themselves
- 21:12for contract extensions. So I'm not so sure they want to
- 21:14go to New York. I think they want to use New
- 21:16York, but let. Me just point out Phil Jackson
- 21:21when he was running the next he wanted Steve Kerr to become his
- 21:25coach. This is before Steve Kerr became
- 21:28coach of the Warriors. OK, he.
- 21:31Wanted Steve Kerr, His coach. Steve Kerr played for Phil
- 21:35Jackson on the Chicago Bulls, so they were very close.
- 21:40And Steve Kerr turned down the Nick job to take the Warrior
- 21:44job. Can you imagine?
- 21:48Steve Kerr listened to Phil Jackson, who maybe you could
- 21:51call his mentor he was his culture is close with.
- 21:54If he listened to Phil Jackson, how would history have played
- 21:58out for Steve Kerr? Individually, he would have
- 22:00coached the Knicks a couple of years, gotten fired, never been
- 22:04the Warrior coach, maybe never gotten another job coaching an
- 22:08NBA team. And now look at them.
- 22:11He's he's a borderline legendary NBA coach, you know, at 4
- 22:16championships and look what it meant to him.
- 22:19In hindsight, would that have worked?
- 22:21In New York, though, he had no players.
- 22:22He had Steph Curry, Klay Thompson.
- 22:26And exactly. But but Steve Kerr decided he
- 22:29wanted the Golden State job instead.
- 22:32And that's what I'm saying about Jason.
- 22:36If he became the Knick coach. Odds or they don't win a
- 22:40championship. The Knicks going forward?
- 22:42It's possible, but odds against it.
- 22:45But the odds are greater that at some point The Mavericks are
- 22:49going to win an NBA championship than the next in the next few
- 22:54years, if not this upcoming year.
- 22:57Probably to put a pin in this Bistrella who I think is 1 ass
- 23:02cheek three toes. One of my favorite.
- 23:05I have here training for Coach Staley in the way at this point
- 23:09I am Rick. This is actually yes he's a
- 23:12Bistrella's mentioning that the coach a woman's culture probably
- 23:16best starting in a small market and Jack did is subliminally
- 23:20campaigning for Don Staley obviously with a sweatshirt.
- 23:24Good call there Rick. Let's just because there's a
- 23:29couple of football comments here.
- 23:30Maybe we'll I want to make a comment about football real
- 23:33quick. Where is there was a call for
- 23:35you to join the TGI Sports Talk Fantasy Football League
- 23:38yesterday, Jack, if you do such things.
- 23:42And I I don't play fantasy football.
- 23:44It's there was a big clamor for you and I don't know who John
- 23:49is, but thank you. CAI know that a couple guys got
- 23:51in yesterday. So we're still looking for five
- 23:54teams over there, but we'll talk more about that and in football
- 23:57news real quick, I'll throw this out there.
- 24:01Todd Bowles gets kind of slow. There's two things I want to
- 24:04talk about. They're all just mentioned.
- 24:06We don't have to comment a lot. Todd Bowles and licked the GM
- 24:11get extensions in Tampa Bay. I didn't think Todd Bowles is a
- 24:14great hire in in Tampa, by the way, to replace Bruce Arians,
- 24:17but he's done a pretty good job and they've done a great job
- 24:20kind of with a reclamation project and in.
- 24:25Baker Mayfield. Baker Mayfield down there.
- 24:28So congratulations to Todd Bowles.
- 24:31He kind of he. Deserves it.
- 24:32Listen, Todd Bowles has done a heck of a job.
- 24:35And keep in mind he was the defensive coordinator, you know,
- 24:39on the Bruce Arians when they won the Super Bowl as well.
- 24:43And then he transitioned being a coach and they've made the
- 24:46playoffs every year the last five years.
- 24:49I mean, you know, Tampa Bay is kind of, I don't want to stay in
- 24:54the rut. It's more positive rust than a
- 24:57negative rut. If there's a such thing as a
- 24:59rust being positive in that day. Consistently good.
- 25:05But they're consistently not a Super Bowl contender.
- 25:09They make the playoffs year after year after year.
- 25:14They're in the playoffs. But when the playoffs begin, no
- 25:18one thinks Tampa Bay is going to be a fact.
- 25:21And they're not like last year. They lose a tight game to the
- 25:25Washington Commanders, who then go on the Commanders to beat the
- 25:28Lions with Tampa beating the Lions and then gone to the NFC
- 25:33Championship game against the Eagles.
- 25:36I mean, who knows at that point? But but they're always
- 25:39competitive. Even in the playoff forces.
- 25:42They get eliminated immediately. Even with Tom Brady after they
- 25:47won the Super Bowl, they lose a close playoff game to the LA
- 25:50Rams. You know, things like that and
- 25:54he has them in the mix. That's the thing about it.
- 25:57Not to win the championship, but when you talk about that
- 26:01division this year in with the Atlanta Falcons, the Carolina
- 26:05Panthers, again, forget the New Orleans Saints, they're not even
- 26:09worth mentioning. But I had to do it as far as
- 26:12winning the division and, and a lot of people are going to pick
- 26:16the Falcons like I did last year, or they're going to think
- 26:20Carolina's an upstart team. They could win the division.
- 26:23But when all's said and done, the Buccaneers are always there
- 26:27at the end. You know what they remind me of
- 26:29a little bit right now? A shorter version of the
- 26:32Cincinnati Bengals under Marvin Lewis.
- 26:34That's what the Buccaneers remind me of right now.
- 26:37A good team never able to win a playoff game.
- 26:39What was more frustrating, if you had to look at it
- 26:43objectively, the American League losing the All Star game every
- 26:47year for the National League back in the day, or the Bengals,
- 26:51it was a tradition. They make the playoffs, they get
- 26:55eliminated immediately. And I, you know, a quarterback
- 27:01like Andy Dolphin, you know, had success, but they don't.
- 27:05It would always be they'd be out immediately.
- 27:08Yeah, that's a great comparison and I will just a comment
- 27:11because you brought it up. I would say the American League
- 27:13because the All Star game mattered back.
- 27:15When you're talking about the American League losing every
- 27:18year, they lost 11 out of 12. I know at least at one point.
- 27:22And even worse, I think if we take it out further, but that as
- 27:26an American League baseball fan at the time and at the time I
- 27:29never, you didn't get to see all these players except in the All
- 27:32Star game, right? And it was very frustrating to
- 27:35lose to them here. Well, they got what they got to
- 27:37do for an All Star game. They got to have a winner take
- 27:42all for an All Star game. And believe me, players like
- 27:46money. I don't want to hear that
- 27:47they're so rich, $1 million for every player on the winning
- 27:52team, $0.00 for every player on the losing team and you're
- 27:56taking the NBA game. They're going to want the
- 27:581,000,000 bucks. They're going to be playing to
- 28:01win. They're only going to want the
- 28:03best players and then they're going to be playing hard for the
- 28:05$1,000,000. Believe me, no one see I don't
- 28:09care how much money it if it's a player making 50 million, he
- 28:13still likes the concept $1 million man.
- 28:18Same thing in baseball, $1,000,000 NFL.
- 28:22You could go back to playing the game.
- 28:23The guys are going to hit one another hard for $1,000,000.
- 28:26Are you kidding me? 100% I would love to see
- 28:29anything that makes these All Star games relevant again.
- 28:31All I get is guys talking to the the announcers in the booth for
- 28:36the whole game. Who wants to watch that?
- 28:38I can't even what they are going to be in their own uniforms
- 28:40though You made a comment earlier about I'd be in favor of
- 28:43all these crazy you. Reminded me of a debate
- 28:45question. I got to put this down now for
- 28:49Saturday. Home Run Derby or slam dunk
- 28:54contest. What's more exciting?
- 28:56Oh, there you go. I got to write it down,
- 28:59otherwise I'm going to forget. That's a good question.
- 29:01Not as great. I'm not going to discuss it from
- 29:04my end, but you could Give your opinion.
- 29:06What is more entertaining to watch?
- 29:09Because the Home Run Derby's more entertaining than the ball
- 29:12game itself. And the slam dunk is, well,
- 29:16maybe not the baseball game itself, but I know the slam dunk
- 29:20contest is more entertaining than these guys pulling up and
- 29:24taking 3 pointers all game. That both of these contests have
- 29:29gotten a little stale for me. And yeah, I know they tried to
- 29:32like, especially the home run contest.
- 29:34They tried to tweak the rules a little bit.
- 29:36I guess It's interesting, some of the guys that are in it
- 29:41today, the big stars don't want to get in it per SE.
- 29:44So if I had to pick one, you're making me pick one.
- 29:46I'll pick the Home Run Derby. Who's this kid, I forgot his
- 29:50name, who keeps winning the slam dunk contest?
- 29:53It's one of the couple of years but doesn't have a is he?
- 29:57Is he on the Sixers on the bench play or what?
- 30:00Did they get him off the street or what He.
- 30:03Plays him on 10 minutes a year. I can't think, yeah.
- 30:06Yeah, I know. Who the heck is he if he's that
- 30:08good? I mean it's.
- 30:10Maybe somebody out here will. OB Topping wins the slam dunk
- 30:15contest one year and then game seven he gets OK C no points at
- 30:20all. You can't dunk it one time at
- 30:23some point. Yeah, it's it's kind of crazy to
- 30:26me as well. Let's pivot a little bit, Jack,
- 30:29to your Forte. There was a big fight, like big
- 30:32fight. Jake Paul, couple questions.
- 30:36So Jake Paul beats Chavez junior this weekend and a cruiser
- 30:41weight, but it's not a championship.
- 30:44It was just a fight, right? Yeah, yeah.
- 30:46And that was for No title at all.
- 30:48It was. Is this fight the people care
- 30:51about these fights? Is Jake Paul ready to move into
- 30:53like mainstream boxing and be a. Yes and no.
- 30:59He's limited, but it's gotten to the point where he's competent.
- 31:03He's competent. And if you put him in with,
- 31:07let's say, a Canelo Alvarez, he might be able to go 567 rounds,
- 31:14you know, and maybe compete, maybe win around the two, you
- 31:19know, jabbing, moving. It's conceivable.
- 31:23And you know, he hasn't fought anyone in that.
- 31:25The biggest name he fought was Julio Cesar Chavez junior.
- 31:29And there's one word to describe Julio Cesar Chavez junior.
- 31:33That word is lazy. Lazy. 39 years old, unmotivated.
- 31:38At one point he was very talented.
- 31:40Julio Cesar Chavez junior. He fought for the legitimate
- 31:45world middle weight championship against Sergio Martinez.
- 31:48Not Martinez down in round 12. Had Martinez in big trouble.
- 31:53He beat John Duddy, who was a pretty good fighter here from
- 31:56New York. So at one point he was, you
- 31:59know, he's a good fighter, but he always piggybacked off his
- 32:04dad's name, Julio Cesar Chavez senior.
- 32:07And now he's 39 years old coming off a layoff.
- 32:11And he trained somewhat for this fight, but it was a 10 round
- 32:16that he did nothing. The 1st 8 rounds, it's like all
- 32:19he Chavez did was follow Paul around the ring.
- 32:23Paul thoroughly outboxed them. Chavez hardly threw a punch.
- 32:28And then in the last two rounds, Chavez started firing away,
- 32:32making a legitimate attempt, you know, to win the fight, to score
- 32:36a knockout. And he landed a few good
- 32:39punches. But at this point, Paul is a
- 32:42competent pro, not a world class pro by any means.
- 32:46OK, you put Paul in with, you know, a Terence Crawford, any
- 32:51elite fighter, they're going to destroy him.
- 32:54But Paul is Paul is the equivalent of a good eight round
- 32:59fighter now, a decent eight round fighter.
- 33:02And I know he's been fighting YouTube guys, this and this and
- 33:06that, but he's dedicated himself to the sport.
- 33:09You know, he's down in Puerto Rico.
- 33:11He trains all the time. So he kind of works at his
- 33:15craft. He didn't have an amateur
- 33:17career. So in the way he was having his
- 33:19amateur career during these early fights and these YouTube
- 33:23guys, he was beating a mixed martial artist.
- 33:27Some of them were the equivalent of mediocre amateur boxers who
- 33:33he would have been facing if he just had started a traditional
- 33:37boxing career. Well, at least again, Chavez,
- 33:40you fought somebody that was born in the last five decades
- 33:42and that you know, Jesus come. On Well, yeah, I wasn't I.
- 33:47But listen, he picked a spot, he took a fight that wasn't risky.
- 33:52And the bottom line is, you know, the only other fighter he
- 33:56ever fought who was strictly a boxer, Tommy Fury, Jake Paul
- 34:00lost to. And Tommy Fury from the UK is no
- 34:04more than the club fighter. Will they have a rematch?
- 34:07It's terrible that they could have a rematch.
- 34:09But what's interesting too, and Paul lost to Tommy Fury, his
- 34:13marketability didn't crash, which shows you it's an
- 34:17entertainment business. You could keep it going.
- 34:20But what Paul wants to do at this point is, you know, cash
- 34:24out when you cash out with the biggest money fight imaginable.
- 34:30If you fight a Canelo Alvarez, by the way, the Mike, when I
- 34:35said the only traditional box, I left out Mike Tyson.
- 34:38But when you're fighting a guy who's 58 years older, I don't, I
- 34:42don't really count back. You would be amazed, Keith, you
- 34:46would be amazed the amount of people who think and it's not
- 34:50true, who think the Tyson Paul fight was staged.
- 34:55I'm overhearing people getting into discussions about it and
- 34:59I'm keeping my mouth shut, you know, overhearing people in
- 35:02mainstream society after the Paul Tyson.
- 35:05But what a fix. Tyson could have knocked him out
- 35:09anytime he wanted to. He held back.
- 35:11Even Sylvester Stallone got into the ACT.
- 35:14He says to Jake, you should thank Mike for saving your life.
- 35:18Trust me, he could have killed you if he wanted to when you're
- 35:23close to 60 years old. Come on.
- 35:26It's funny that you bring that up because I forgotten this.
- 35:29I heard this morning, I don't know if you heard this, but
- 35:32there are rumors about this last fight with Paul and Chavez
- 35:35because people who googled, I don't know if you heard this,
- 35:38people who Googled the fight before the fight were given a
- 35:43result that Jake Paul won in a unanimous decision before the
- 35:46fight ever happened because of AI and how Google gives you, you
- 35:50know, these summit some summations.
- 35:53So so people, there's a lot of people out there thinking this
- 35:56fight was fixed because what did Jake Paul do?
- 35:58He wanted the United States decision.
- 36:02Did you hear this story and I'm assuming?
- 36:05Julio Cesh Junior has been a dog and he's dogged it OK.
- 36:11He's quitting big spots. He's been lazy.
- 36:15He hasn't trained yet. Talent till, you know, be a much
- 36:19better fighter than you know he ultimately was much, much
- 36:23better. He's 39 years old coming off a
- 36:27layoff. He hadn't fought forever and he
- 36:30hadn't been training, I'm sure, during all that time.
- 36:33And then he signs the fight. Jake Paul, he starts training,
- 36:37he gets an assemblance to shape the fight and and it told during
- 36:42his performance where he held back and did nothing at all the
- 36:451st 8 rounds to conserve energy. But the last two rounds of the
- 36:49fight he did fire away with hard punches.
- 36:52I mean, but at this point Paul is confident enough that he's
- 36:57not going to fall apart, that Paul seems to be able to take a
- 37:01punch. Paul's stamina so so, but he's
- 37:04used to going rounds. Paul is competent at this point.
- 37:08He's not world class by any means, not close to it, but he's
- 37:12competent. We let's call him a boxer.
- 37:16People still are hung up and calling him a YouTube.
- 37:20Let me while we're on boxing, let me bring back Michael's
- 37:23comment here so you can comment like coming up, Chris Huback,
- 37:27Junior against Connor Ben and a possible rematch already set for
- 37:33the 20th. And I have a question once you
- 37:34get into this, I've got one question about this fight I want
- 37:37to get into. Yeah, you know, it would be a
- 37:40rematch. Your bank beat then in the first
- 37:43fight, close fight, but the decision was fast, It wasn't
- 37:47controversial. It was a terrific, terrific
- 37:50fight. Fight of the year candidate and
- 37:53I in both men, even though that good fighters in their riding,
- 37:57Chris Eubank junior, obviously very established writer and Ben
- 38:01is getting there. They're piggybacking off their
- 38:04famous dad's name. You know, the famous Chris
- 38:07Eubank, you're Nigel Benn rivalry, you know.
- 38:11And now the sons are going at it and there was a lot of bad blood
- 38:16the first fight. I don't know.
- 38:18Will it quite be the same way in the rematch?
- 38:21But they pushed themselves to the limit.
- 38:23You know, the first fight, the rematch in England, it'll be
- 38:27big, it'll be big. There's no way of getting around
- 38:30it. And considering that New Bank's
- 38:34victory in the first fight, even though it was legitimate, it
- 38:38wasn't so conclusive to prohibit a rematch.
- 38:42The rematch is sellable, especially because Canelo
- 38:46Alvarez and Terence Crawford are boxing the week before.
- 38:50What else is out there for both guys?
- 38:52Chris Eubank can't be waiting on a Canelo Alvarez fight #1
- 38:58Alvarez has to beat Terence Crawford.
- 39:01If he does, yeah, then maybe he goes in with Chris Eubank.
- 39:04There's a reasonable chance Conor Ben was suspended for you
- 39:09know what drug use. And finally, I, I don't want to
- 39:15say he got cleared the way he claims he did, but the
- 39:18suspension and everything was up and he's allowed to fight again.
- 39:24And you know, and that's natural match if I'm kind of Ben's not
- 39:29going to get a fight nearly as big as he would with anyone
- 39:32else. I have one problem here with
- 39:36this fight and I don't know how prevalent I'm I'm assuming it's
- 39:38prevalent in the fight industry today because of who the guy is.
- 39:43Tariki Al Alashique, if I tell you his name correct from the
- 39:48Saudi. Arabia.
- 39:50And they own, yeah, right. And they own Ring magazine.
- 39:53I have a problem with the Saudis be involved in and money washing
- 39:57all their their their blood money in sports today.
- 40:00They did it with live golf. It appears that they're doing a
- 40:02lot of this in boxing today. I mean, do you or or or
- 40:06traditional boxing people have a problem with the Saudis being so
- 40:10deep into this promoting of fights?
- 40:13That that's AI don't want to ask the question for another day
- 40:16because you're asking me that now the.
- 40:18Deep question you have Charles out there?
- 40:20That's the overall ethics involved in sports.
- 40:24I mean, they're doing obviously some things that are less than
- 40:29honorable, to put it mildly. The Saudis, should I not watch
- 40:34the fights they make? Should I not cover the fights
- 40:37that they make? I mean, in my past to me, is it
- 40:43a separate thing? I mean, they're making the
- 40:46Canelo Crawford fight. It wouldn't come off otherwise.
- 40:50They're making these big fights that normally wouldn't take
- 40:54place. Look, the Eagles were going to
- 40:56play the Chiefs in the Super Bowl no matter what.
- 40:59That's the way the lead was set up.
- 41:01But could you imagine different promoters had to negotiate to
- 41:05make a Kansas City Chiefs Philadelphia Eagle Super Bowl
- 41:10game and, and, and imagine it wouldn't come off for whatever
- 41:14reason, but the Saudis could save the game, the Super Bowl.
- 41:18Would you watch the Super Bowl if they could save it?
- 41:23You know, that's an interesting question because right now my,
- 41:25my, my answer would be no. But then if I had no game, it
- 41:28might be different because it's theoretical.
- 41:31With golf it's been easy because live I just, I have not watched
- 41:34any live golf ever, but I've got the whole PGA Tour to watch and
- 41:37all the majors are still, you know, have nothing to do with
- 41:41this so. It's a member of the media.
- 41:47I'm not crazy about the Saudis. Like, they even have a show July
- 41:5112th in New York, headline by Shakur Stevenson and William
- 41:55Cepeda at the Louis Armstrong Stadium in Queens.
- 42:00And I can't find anywhere where I could get press credentials.
- 42:03When they had this show at Times Square, the big show at Times
- 42:06Square, the media was cut off from being a ringside except for
- 42:11someone from Ring magazine, which they bought.
- 42:15And we would sign different locations.
- 42:18It don't laugh, Keith. I was assigned to watch the
- 42:22fight in the seafood restaurant, the seafood restaurant.
- 42:26And I had no idea. And I have to cover right about
- 42:29it. I have no idea what I'd be
- 42:32getting into. So I would have to sit at the
- 42:34bar, maybe order dinner, a stand with a bunch of people.
- 42:39And I wound up staying home and I, you know, and I got it on the
- 42:43pay-per-view because I had to cover it at that point.
- 42:46But that's what they're doing, you know, with them.
- 42:49They have no real regard for the media whatever.
- 42:53But His Excellency gets offended if you talk negatively about
- 42:57them. But he is making the best
- 43:00fights. I mean, he is making the best
- 43:03fights. And obviously, you know, the
- 43:06Saudis can't be making money on them, but they but I think they
- 43:10have a plan. They're paying big money now.
- 43:13And I think the plan is get a monopoly on the sport, get
- 43:17complete control and then pay much lower than they're doing
- 43:22now. And that's how they're going to
- 43:24make their money. But also a Turkey, Alaska,
- 43:29however you pronounce his last name, It's always a tongue
- 43:33twist. He.
- 43:33Sounds good to me. He.
- 43:35Genuinely loves boxing. I got to give him his do.
- 43:39He loves to sport the boxing, he's knowledgeable on it and he
- 43:44loves seeing good fights himself.
- 43:47And not all promoters love the sport.
- 43:51I mean, we have a lot of promoters that it's a business
- 43:54to them. But sometimes you get a promoter
- 43:57who genuinely loves the sport. And His Excellency, he does love
- 44:01the sport. I got to give him his do in that
- 44:03regard. Well, let's move on from the
- 44:05Excellency to sport that he hasn't yet infiltrated.
- 44:09We'll give them time. Major League Baseball we're
- 44:12we've reached a halfway point in the season.
- 44:14People like the point to the All Star game as a halfway point of
- 44:17the season, but really not. We're here right now, basically.
- 44:21The Mets and Yankees maybe have surprised a little bit in the
- 44:25early going and they both faded a little bit.
- 44:28The Mets a lot the last 3-4 weeks.
- 44:34And we can start with either 1 you want.
- 44:36We obviously judges on a tremendous pace.
- 44:38Still, even though he's slowed down, he's still on his way to a
- 44:41historic season if this continues.
- 44:44Yankees have their problems, Mets have their problems.
- 44:46There's holes everywhere on both of these teams.
- 44:50Are these teams going to be able to hold up, you think, for the
- 44:53second-half and and no. No concerns.
- 44:57In the beginning of the season, I picked the Mets to win their
- 45:00division. They're only a game and a half
- 45:03out, and they've been they've lost, what, 13 of their last 15?
- 45:08Keep in mind, the Yankees ended the 2000 season by losing 15 of
- 45:14their last eighteen. They were awful.
- 45:16And then they went on to win the World Series.
- 45:19OK, you know, they went into the playoffs losing 15 at 18 and in
- 45:24the beginning of the season I picked the Yankees to get into
- 45:27the playoffs as a wild card, as a wild card.
- 45:31And that might still happen. Only a game and 1/2 in first
- 45:34place, but both teams are going to be in the playoffs.
- 45:37I would tell people to relax. I know the Mets finish one of
- 45:42their worst home stands in team hit.
- 45:45I mean, one of their worst theories they were at Pittsburgh
- 45:49and team history. They not only got swept in three
- 45:52games by the Pirates, they got annihilated.
- 45:55They got annihilated. But I I think it's just one of
- 45:58those things. They played the Milwaukee
- 46:00Brewers this week. The Mets all bounce back before
- 46:05the weeks over. There's a lot of, just to
- 46:08address a couple of the holes that the the Mets have
- 46:11specifically. I mean, they just sent Alvarez
- 46:13to the minors a week ago. John Gonzalez called that on my
- 46:16show. He happened the same day.
- 46:19He's been atrocious. He was atrocious last year.
- 46:21So he got a big hole behind the plate.
- 46:24There's a hole at second base because McNeil hasn't really
- 46:26stepped up since he came back. No, he wants, that's a hole with
- 46:31Jeff McNeil. He hasn't.
- 46:33He hasn't been bad. He's been good.
- 46:36No, I I would not listen, Mcneil's on the contract I think
- 46:41through next year as well. And then I they have a team
- 46:45option on them I think the year after.
- 46:47But you let Jeff McNeil play, he doesn't hurt you.
- 46:50Jeff McNeil, I wouldn't point him out.
- 46:53What about Vientos? You're going to.
- 46:54So you're going to let two holes in the infield and you're just
- 46:57going to hope they play better? I'm going to try to Alonso's
- 47:00defense leave something to be desired.
- 47:04And the beginning of the year, I said, you know, he's not as bad
- 47:07as people are making him out to be.
- 47:10Well, he's I gave him maybe a little too much of A prop, you
- 47:14know, by saying his defense isn't as bad.
- 47:18Listen, he's not good. You know, you hit, you know,
- 47:22line, driveway, yes, they moved his right or left, What can I
- 47:27say? But he hits a lot of home.
- 47:29It's it's going to be interesting next year.
- 47:33Alonso has a $24 million player option.
- 47:37He made 30 million this year. Or he could go free agent again.
- 47:42But a ton of Mets. I want him to be a career Met,
- 47:46but it has to be at a reasonable price.
- 47:48I'm not going to pay Scott. Boris is his agent.
- 47:52I don't think I want to play this game again with him next
- 47:56door of season. You know what, we're going to
- 47:58sign him or not. I'll sit down with Peter Lonzo
- 48:01and I'm even willing Keith to give him a five year deal, OK,
- 48:07and give him something like 20, six, $27 million a year because
- 48:13I want him to break all these Met records.
- 48:15I want him to be a legacy player.
- 48:17We've talked about legacy players, and I think Peter Lonzo
- 48:21has entered that territory for the mess where he should be a
- 48:26legacy player. The way we talked about Aaron
- 48:28Judge being one for the Yankees and Daryl Strawberry should have
- 48:33been one for the Mets. But he left after eight years
- 48:37and then they still retire his number.
- 48:38I don't see the fence in that, but you know, you know fine.
- 48:43I have AI have one issue there with putting Pete Alonzo and
- 48:47Aaron Judge in the same sentence.
- 48:49Sorry, I have to call you out there a little bit because Aaron
- 48:53Judge is miles ahead of Alonzo as a player overall.
- 48:58But when you what? No, no, no.
- 48:59What I'm trying to say, I agree with you on that point.
- 49:02But when you talk about team history, looking at the future,
- 49:08it would benefit Alonzo to hold all these net records.
- 49:14OK. And it does count for something.
- 49:17And I've done this by you a long time ago.
- 49:21Keith, I forgot what the answer was.
- 49:23Take the case of Andy Pettit. OK, what does he have?
- 49:26254 career victories? He's not in the Hall of Fame.
- 49:31And it's not because a steroid used.
- 49:35He only used steroids 4 days or so.
- 49:37It wasn't like he used it over time from what we gathered, he
- 49:41just experimented with it. You know, short term.
- 49:45But the point is, the guy who holds the most wins in Yankee
- 49:51histories, Whitey fought with 236.
- 49:54Andy Pettitte was the all time win leader for the most
- 49:58historical sports franchise. That would have boosted his
- 50:03chances of getting in the Hall of Fame considerably.
- 50:06No question. I remember.
- 50:07I remember you answered the question.
- 50:09I remember my answer. He'd be in the Hall of Fame or
- 50:11going to the Hall of Fame. He.
- 50:12Went to Houston, he went as a free agent to the Astros for
- 50:16three years and they got to a World Series.
- 50:19There wasn't a terrible move from that perspective.
- 50:23And they got the World Series during a time when the Yankees
- 50:26didn't get to a World Series in the three years and they lost
- 50:29the White Sox. Him and Clemens won together on
- 50:32that Astro team. But had he stayed with the
- 50:35Yankees all the way through and began to winning his pitch in
- 50:38history, man, that would have bolted his case.
- 50:42Well, again, basically he would have been Whitey Ford, right?
- 50:45100 and 250 wins in 4 World Series champions.
- 50:49He's going to be in the Hall of Fame, without a doubt, yeah.
- 50:53Well, yeah. Well, that's the thing about it.
- 50:55It's but but he doesn't have any.
- 50:58It's not the all time winningest Yankee pitch, no.
- 51:01And so. You become.
- 51:03That's the case of Alonso. Alonso can hold all these MEM
- 51:07records and that would make him a franchise icon when all is
- 51:12said and done. And you know who no one talks
- 51:16about on the Met? You've never mentioned this key
- 51:19to my knowledge. You know, you talk about all
- 51:22these players. Brandon Nemo, he say he's a
- 51:24crowd favorite, signed him to an 8 year deal, 162 million.
- 51:30He was never $20 million player. But they were scared.
- 51:34There was one other team out there that was going to give the
- 51:37money to Colorado Rockies. So Steve Cohen was like perky
- 51:43Turkey in boxing, His Excellency just throwing the money around
- 51:48in the beginning. Yeah, if I if anybody was
- 51:53threatening to go to the Rockies, I would say go and have
- 51:55fun because that's where players go to die.
- 51:57I mean, remember Chris Bryant? Does anybody?
- 52:00$20 million a year. This is Brandon Nemo.
- 52:04I mean, I'm not saying he's, he's not good enough to he's.
- 52:07A nice. Player.
- 52:08He's a nice little way at the hand, not at 20 million a year,
- 52:1320 million a year. Save the 20 million and let it
- 52:17go to another star when you're a bit of a team.
- 52:22Well, you got to, again, if you're the Mets, you don't care
- 52:24about the 20 million because money is not an object.
- 52:27You'll just pay the luxury taxes and be done.
- 52:29But you know, you still got to spend the money wisely.
- 52:33And Pete Alonzo, yes, you know what?
- 52:35I want to see more legacy players.
- 52:38I want to see more guys play their entire career with with
- 52:41teams. We don't see much of that
- 52:42anymore. I mean, who's who's the last
- 52:45superstar who retired that played his entire season?
- 52:47You know, I think it becomes the type of guy that Pete Alonso
- 52:53could go to him, sit down and say, look, I want to I want to
- 52:56break these records. I want to be a legacy player.
- 52:59I want to be a career meth cause Steve Combs, a Mets fan, not
- 53:03just a no and a Mets fan and say, look, what can we work out?
- 53:08I it would have to be a no trade deal.
- 53:11I want to be the first baseman here the next five years.
- 53:14What can you comfortably pay me? I'll I'll, you know, I won't
- 53:20push it to the limit, but what can you come up?
- 53:22Can you give me 25,000,000 a year, five years, 125 million?
- 53:28I even I'm from Alonzo, I'll take 120 million for five years,
- 53:3324,000,000 a year. But you know what's going to
- 53:36happen in the offseason, Scott? Boris, who doesn't give a dawn
- 53:39of his legacy, is going to put Alonzo in the market again.
- 53:45And if teams didn't bite last year, are they going to do it
- 53:49this year? The only thing he has going from
- 53:51Alonzo that he maybe didn't have going last year.
- 53:55There were maybe teams out there who thought to themselves that
- 54:00Vladimir Guerrero was going to become a free agent this year
- 54:05and they were saving their money for him.
- 54:07So no one wanted to get stuck stunning Alonso because Vlad
- 54:11Guerrero was the goal. And that was maybe even the Mets
- 54:14goal initially, but not at Guerrero.
- 54:17It's signed with Toronto. He's off the market.
- 54:20And even a team like the Yankees, I mean, I'm sure if
- 54:25Alonso's available, unless Paul Goldschmidt starts rebounding,
- 54:30he got off to a phenomenal start for the Yankees, but then he's
- 54:34been slumping. He.
- 54:37Still gives me, but he still gives me a more complete game
- 54:40than Pete Alonzo. He's a decent, he's a above
- 54:43average. And.
- 54:45He runs a base as well. So he's not signed for next
- 54:49year. Paul Goldschmidt the only sign
- 54:51the one year deal with the Yankees.
- 54:52If the Yankees signed Paul Goldschmidt for one year last
- 54:56year, they're not going to give him more than one year again at
- 55:00most. Well, I'm not giving him more
- 55:02than Alonzo gets either. By the way, he's he's 14,000,000
- 55:05I think this year, right? Yeah, and the Yankee.
- 55:07No, no one. I can't see anyone signing
- 55:09Alonzo to A5 year deal unless A-Team.
- 55:13It gets overly ambitious. It only takes one team to get
- 55:17overly ambitious. I'm kind of new school too,
- 55:22Rick. I mean, I'm not just like old
- 55:25school I I like to keep up with the times.
- 55:27What's this Mike Trout will be the next one team I was talking
- 55:31about one team players Mike Trout will be the next guy to
- 55:33retire would play a plate on one team I.
- 55:36Can't remember what this game might have been.
- 55:38The attitude, Mike. You know, the owner, the Angels,
- 55:41the Audie Marino. Said Kershaw's and I.
- 55:44Trade Mike Trout if he wanted to be traded.
- 55:48Mike Trout never asked to be traded, and he's been with a
- 55:52losing team. And consider this Mike Trout's
- 55:55from New Jersey. That's his hometown, and he's
- 55:57playing out in California. So unless Mike Trout plans to
- 56:02live in California the rest of his life, why wouldn't he want
- 56:06to come home? It would be wouldn't it be a
- 56:09dream of Mike Trout if he could play for the Philadelphia
- 56:12Phillies? He grew up a Philly fan.
- 56:14Even the Yankees, the Mets, your local, even the Orioles.
- 56:18Well, we only got about two minutes, but before we need to
- 56:22start to wrap it up, we didn't talk about the Yankees.
- 56:24Yankees I think will be solid in the second-half, but still some
- 56:28some issues to deal with. I think Clark Schmidt and Will
- 56:31Warren has stepped up huge like I thought they would that before
- 56:34the season they started to step up.
- 56:37Anyway. I still worry about that
- 56:39rotational event he'll supposed to start throwing hopefully in
- 56:42the minor leagues in July to get ready to come back.
- 56:46I still think they need another pitcher, maybe some bullpen
- 56:49help. They need a second base or third
- 56:51baseman because we want Jazz to play second base.
- 56:53This team still has some holes too, but no well.
- 56:55No come on breed run down Clark Schmidt.
- 57:01They would be in top three. You know playoff rotation Louis
- 57:07heel by the time the playoffs would come around he you'd have
- 57:11to assume he would be ready. You know, their bullpen, Devin
- 57:15Williams has come around and he's pitching like the guy we
- 57:19thought we were getting, you know?
- 57:21So, I mean, we're we're, we're, we're the Yankees, OK, in that
- 57:25area. I mean, every team could use
- 57:27more pitching, more depth, as though it's the threat of an
- 57:30injury. And you know, Charles Chism
- 57:33drives me a little crazy because he's defensively flawed at
- 57:37second base. Ranger.
- 57:40He's better at second base than third base for sure.
- 57:43And DJ Lemayo, he's giving you maybe a little more than
- 57:47expected. There's a little bounce to him.
- 57:49There's some hope there, Keith. There's some hope he could get
- 57:53back to being close to the old DJ he was.
- 57:56I'm not even ruling that out because he has some bounce to
- 57:58him when he plays. He hasn't been that bad.
- 58:02Or he could go into a rut and he could be terrible DJ.
- 58:05I don't. Understand what I don't
- 58:06understand why not playing him at third base and Jazz at 2nd?
- 58:09That's what I don't get. That was the plan originally.
- 58:12So there must be something in DJ's health issues where they
- 58:17don't want him at third base. I don't know.
- 58:18But again, I'm not saying the Ikis won't win.
- 58:21Danny Fuller knows. I'm too tough on my team
- 58:23according to Danny Fuller and you.
- 58:26But I'd like to look at things realistically, not just with
- 58:29rose colored glasses. That's all.
- 58:31Yeah, but in case you can't just say go out and get another, but
- 58:34we need to improve this and that.
- 58:35Every team has that issue. But what's out there for you to
- 58:39get one player, You know, and I'm going to close in this
- 58:42quickly because I know we're winding down.
- 58:44Who I felt was always destined to be a Yankee, who I've always
- 58:48badly wanted them to get. And it's not the biggest deal.
- 58:50Brian Buxton, you know, the Twins.
- 58:53It's like this guy's going to be a career Twin and some reason I
- 58:57always thought he'd make his way over, you know, and be the
- 59:00Yankees center fielder. He's a great player.
- 59:02When he gets on the field, he's another guy.
- 59:04He can't stay in a field though, you know, So I don't disagree
- 59:08real quick. Yeah.
- 59:10Listen, this is our maiden voyage today, guys and I think
- 59:12we had we had some fun. We as always, Jack and I go
- 59:15through and get all these topics.
- 59:17We don't get to him because we just get shattering, which is
- 59:19what the show's going to be about.
- 59:20It's going to be about opinions and and having some fun and I
- 59:23thank Danny and Rick and and CA for coming out today.
- 59:28Dave saw out. There.
- 59:29Sorry I didn't get into the Wimbledon comments CA, but we'll
- 59:32talk a little about Wimbledon. That's a if the if the need
- 59:35arises. I don't think Jack and I are
- 59:37either one. Of us listen with tennis, you
- 59:41know I like talking tennis. Yeah, we'll get into some of
- 59:43that and I'm going to force Jack to talk about golf from now on
- 59:47from time to time too. Mack would never talk about
- 59:49golf, but we will from time to time.
- 59:52So Andy, one last thing from Danny mentions, Charlie Blackman
- 59:58did play his whole career at in the at Colorado.
- 1:00:03So we got to run. It's 9:00 guys.
- 1:00:04Thank you for tuning in. We'll see you on Friday with the
- 1:00:07same show, the same cast. Have a great weekend guys, and a
- 1:00:13great weekend. Sorry, I'm used to being out
- 1:00:15with Jack on a Friday apparently.
- 1:00:17You guys have a great week. We'll see you on Friday morning.
- 1:00:19Bye bye.
