- 0:54Thank you. Now, here are the host of The
- 0:58United, We scan podcast, Welcome back, everybody.
- 1:04We are at episode 29. We took a week off as a few of
- 1:09us had our state conventions last weekend.
- 1:11So, we are back now. How's the last couple weeks been
- 1:15treating? You, Mike?
- 1:17Oh, what a couple weeks have been pretty good, actually, let
- 1:20me look at a calendar. Let me see what the last couple
- 1:22weeks were, because my head's not on straight.
- 1:24Let's see last week. Let's see, that's July.
- 1:28So here's June. So, last couple weeks, so Last
- 1:32weekend, I was while you were at State Convention.
- 1:35I was getting together with my whole fam damn only in
- 1:39Tennessee, with my dad, my and all of my extended family for a
- 1:44long weekend. And other than that, it's just
- 1:49been normal work. But work has not been too bad,
- 1:53the last couple weeks. So that's me.
- 1:58Hey, Josh, how is your past couple weeks Pretty good.
- 2:04I think my state conventions Ended as yours was getting ready
- 2:08to start up again. And if I knew you were in
- 2:11Tennessee, I would have told you to swing by, depending on, where
- 2:14in the state and where it's only a few more hours.
- 2:19Had to educate management again and different things.
- 2:25They inquired. Why?
- 2:26I was putting my weave in on the lra rather than putting in slips
- 2:32because they have to go in and answer to them in terms.
- 2:37I'm like well I'm not getting my my slipped back.
- 2:41Copy of my slip back receive so that's why I started doing it.
- 2:44It's like well you're dealing with me now so we'll see how
- 2:48that goes next. Couple times I put in slips
- 2:51she'll find them give them back. Uh same day.
- 2:55James. I know I spent a few days with
- 2:58you at convention, how has it been otherwise?
- 3:03Short week last week because the convention it's been pretty
- 3:07good. My postmaster actually supports
- 3:11the dimensions or Parcels that was listed in the PO 603 under
- 3:18male count which is been obviously been told to us that
- 3:22it's been deleted and no longer applies.
- 3:25And so I talked with my postmaster after and she said,
- 3:31I'm still going to support Those Dimensions until they update the
- 3:35PO, 603 the PO, 603 is still the current document that has the
- 3:40measurements in it. So she's going to support it
- 3:42which I support my postmaster, fully on that.
- 3:45So it helps my carriers out a lot with that touring around up
- 3:50in sus, Amory was awesome. Hello had a lot of fun outside
- 3:54of the convention touring the sites, including the Ship Wreck
- 3:58of the Edmund Fitzgerald at the Great Lakes, Shipwreck Museum.
- 4:02Is IAM and the Valley Camp museum ship which is a former
- 4:07crater that's been converted into a museum which also had
- 4:11artifacts from the Edmund Fitzgerald.
- 4:14So watch ships. Go through the soo locks up
- 4:16there going from Lake Michigan and Lake Huron up to Lake
- 4:21Superior. Toward the original weather
- 4:24bureau office which was built in the 1890s and delivered weather
- 4:28information to the ship's right there at the locks.
- 4:31That was pretty cool to see I got on the power of history that
- 4:36was there was designed to be a church thing that people could
- 4:42go to, but they lost funding and so they turned it into a history
- 4:46tower that you can actually watch the ships go by.
- 4:49And then just as we were about to leave, we got to see the
- 4:53Arthur M Anderson The Last Ship to ever talk to the Edmund
- 4:57Fitzgerald was actually going northbound through the soo locks
- 5:01so that was pretty cool. Cool drive up was good, storms
- 5:05on Sunday and then the smoke, of course, from the Canadian
- 5:11wildfires. But it was really nice to get
- 5:14out and see all my friends and the convention and we'll
- 5:18definitely talk more about that here.
- 5:19A little later in the episode. But the short week last week was
- 5:23really nice not much. In terms of male, still took a
- 5:27while to get it done. Kind of rusty after having so
- 5:29many days off. But it was really nice, nice,
- 5:34couple of weeks, I had a good discussion with quite a few
- 5:37people up there as well, and some issues that didn't get
- 5:42resolved, that will have to be resolved in another manner, but
- 5:46we'll get there. Bill, how is it been for you?
- 5:50Dear see, I worked one whole day in the last two weeks between
- 5:58our convention last week and the and moving the This week, I only
- 6:04worked one day, which was a Friday and that was only because
- 6:08they would had three routes down instead of two.
- 6:11So I said, you know, I couldn't do that and I went in even know
- 6:15I could have used the whole week but I sacrifice myself for my
- 6:19fellow carriers and my customers like a martyr.
- 6:24Yeah I'm not I'm not giving Wildlife up willingly, you know.
- 6:32It would be nice to get back to work and get to see my people
- 6:36and my dogs and my customers and the kids and all that.
- 6:41I miss that, I really do. Yeah, it was my you Kristen.
- 6:45It was a short week for me. I actually stayed two extra days
- 6:50after convention ended in attended observed, the
- 6:55post-convention board meetings, which I do urge people that with
- 6:59the open meeting open board meeting.
- 7:02Meetings in your state go it's educational.
- 7:04You really learn a lot of what goes behind goes on behind the
- 7:07scenes. So other than that was back to
- 7:10work Friday you know, ran my route and then went and helped
- 7:14the other newer RCA on the route that he's never run in its
- 7:18entirety and then worked my double yesterday, sweltering in
- 7:23the Lov but you know, nothing new there.
- 7:25I do not. Yeah.
- 7:26It's been pretty much same old, same old hopefully before the
- 7:29convention. They won more.
- 7:32Plus the young lady that broker put back in March came back this
- 7:39week so and be like, yep, I worked.
- 7:45I think that's everybody. But yeah, I had just my Ox route
- 7:50for a few days, that was nice. Well, it was a nice little break
- 7:55of just running and being done. Help.
- 7:59Get some mapping updated and then Worked my double and then
- 8:05left for convention on Sunday afternoon, Micah mention was
- 8:11that week before then 19? Or yeah.
- 8:15The 19th through 21st Monday, Tuesday Wednesday.
- 8:18So, I was off that week and that I couldn't remember what I have
- 8:23requested. So, Sunday night, I pulled out.
- 8:27My lease is up and I cried when I saw that my leave ended Sunday
- 8:34night Monday who wants to go back, ya know for ended up
- 8:46having to go back on a Monday. It was Heavy.
- 8:48Yeah, my office has been anyone dated with Amazon the last few
- 8:54weeks to the point. It's We had Al we have a local
- 9:00contractor, delivering Amazon. I from my understanding they
- 9:04pretty much switched where ours which Warehouse or contracting
- 9:11company delivers to the post office as opposed to which one
- 9:15goes to the contractors Hub and needless to say we're getting
- 9:19the bulk of it back and I've been talking to my one RCA that
- 9:26just doing it. Optionally well.
- 9:27But his comments to me last night, when I got back as he was
- 9:31leaving, where can, you know, he's really, he's having a hard
- 9:36time grasping. The fact that we don't get paid
- 9:38anything different for doing extra work and he's just like,
- 9:42can you tell me what you know is it worth staying when I'm having
- 9:48to do all this work extra work? That you know, now I'm working
- 9:52over evaluation where he was coming in under evaluation and
- 9:56he Just trying to explain how it's supposed to equal itself
- 10:00out is just it's kind of difficult for those that are
- 10:03newer as opposed to those of us that have been around a while.
- 10:08So I'm really worried I don't want him to leave.
- 10:11Because number one he'd be my sub and number two he he does do
- 10:18a good job. He really is good and he gets
- 10:20it. So I'm hoping I can convince him
- 10:23not to leave that. You know, it's worth it in the
- 10:26end. And it's just that next one to
- 10:28go. We don't know when they're going
- 10:32to go. I mean, it could be the end of
- 10:34this year. It could be next year.
- 10:35It could be two years down the road, we don't know.
- 10:38So that's this. Whole thing is, is it going to
- 10:40be worth the wait for me? So, I mean, I understand it as
- 10:44somebody who's trying to provide for their family, I really do.
- 10:47So hopefully, fingers crossed. But other than that, lets see.
- 10:52I go back and I work by 47, not my route, but the 47k on Monday.
- 10:57We are actually not coming in Tuesday to case.
- 10:59Yay. I have Tuesday off completely.
- 11:03And then Wednesday, yes. The day after the holiday, we
- 11:06start OJT with the brand new sub.
- 11:09I'm the 47k route. I did find out.
- 11:14He was actually the only one in his Academy class last week.
- 11:18Not this past week, with the week before, he was.
- 11:20So, he had one-on-one Academy all week.
- 11:23My old regular we're like three on one, right?
- 11:26Yeah. Rihanna And so, and then my old
- 11:30regular who I from my first office, she her and I roomed
- 11:34together for State Convention and she told me that she went
- 11:39into the break room Friday, in the academy instructor and the
- 11:42new, my new RCA was in there and she looked to him, she was I've
- 11:46heard all about you and he just gave her this look of what the
- 11:49heck. So, I'll hook, I'll have to
- 11:52clear that up with him, Wednesday a little bit.
- 11:54Like, I'm sorry, yes. He Friar Serra for the Academy
- 12:00instructor, she was texting with her little bit.
- 12:02He seems like he's going to be a good one which we were thinking
- 12:06about. He did come in in case two or
- 12:08three days why I was gone just to, you know, start learning the
- 12:12case and I talked to the regular on that route and she's like,
- 12:15yeah, he was doing really good. He's hopefully, we'll stick with
- 12:19it and we should find out. I've got another one in the
- 12:23pipeline coming up. So that'll give us that one.
- 12:26Comes true. And as long as everybody still
- 12:29there, that'll give us five our Cas 45k routes and 1/8 Shin my
- 12:37ox and there goes my hours, but with a brand new car payment,
- 12:44that's a little bit high. But oh, yes, I forgot we haven't
- 12:47been on. I got my new car.
- 12:49Finally, the one I was looking at.
- 12:52Yes, I picked that up. I've had it.
- 12:54What? A week and a half now.
- 12:55So be two weeks. Us Wednesday that I got it.
- 13:00It already had a flat tire. Yeah, I got a flat tire.
- 13:03The very next day I went to go pick up my own scared the crap
- 13:06out of us saying you got into an accident but it was with the
- 13:10postal truck and not the not your own car.
- 13:12We were you smashed your new car up already?
- 13:15No. Yeah last Saturday before the
- 13:17Furry Convention I was in a little fender bender with the LV
- 13:20was not my fault. But no, major major issues.
- 13:26I guess vmf did take the truck Thursday, basically, I was going
- 13:30to make a left hand turn into the driveway.
- 13:32It my turn around point and blinker was on Dusty gravel
- 13:38road, so I didn't see her behind me.
- 13:41She thought I was since it is a little bit narrow Grover Gravel
- 13:46Road. She thought I was going to the
- 13:47right to let her pass me. So she come up on the left
- 13:51because I'm going to turn she did.
- 13:52Then notice that I was going trying to turn.
- 13:54So she tried to go towards the driveway, more to lessen, the
- 13:57impact. So it was a slow little impact.
- 14:00She could get the front of her pickup, hit the Left hand front
- 14:05quarter panel and knock the bumper off, the one Mount.
- 14:08So didn't have an extra truck with everybody out running.
- 14:12So supervisor came out, did our accident report thing?
- 14:15And then we been a gold the bumper back, sort of in place
- 14:18bungee cord it. So I could finish the day.
- 14:21Otherwise the right hand side was rubbing on that front, right
- 14:23tire. But all in all, you know,
- 14:26everybody was okay, we both got all the vehicles, she's like, oh
- 14:29my gosh, I'm so sorry, are you okay?
- 14:31And I'm like, yes, I'm fine. She gives me.
- 14:33Hug. And then she told me how she was
- 14:36already upset on her way to a girlfriend.
- 14:38She had left her garage door open, and she had baby birds
- 14:42that were in a dog crate and another animal had gotten
- 14:47through the slots on the dog crate.
- 14:51And well, I'll her baby birds unfortunately did not make it
- 14:54and it was not a pretty sight. So she was a little upset to.
- 14:58So then I had to give her a hug and then we sat there just
- 15:01chitchat and for the next half hour or so.
- 15:03To the supervisor got out there and we did all our paperwork and
- 15:07made up all our reports and statements and whatnot.
- 15:10So yeah, that was my very first accident after eight and a half
- 15:15years. Yeah, talking about our phone.
- 15:20Sorry go ahead Christmas dinner out.
- 15:22So so yeah, you know accidents happen, they do.
- 15:26But all in all, you know, I'm looking forward to training the
- 15:28new guy this next week. Not looking forward to the
- 15:31temperatures. So I From one extreme and the
- 15:34winter riding in the back on the in the jump seat to in the
- 15:38middle of the Sun, in the middle of July writing in the jump
- 15:41seat. So one extreme to the other,
- 15:43that'll be fun. We need to invest our brother to
- 15:46live where you're at. And what was that guy's you were
- 15:50talking over each other? Go James.
- 15:53I said you're going to have to invest in one of those
- 15:56battery-powered fans. Yeah, I'm gonna do something.
- 16:00I said I'd rather July where you're at then July.
- 16:03Where I'm at? Yes, this is true.
- 16:05This is very true and this route does go along you January,
- 16:10though, I'll trade you January's and this route.
- 16:14The nice thing about this route, it does go.
- 16:17We've got to Inland Lakes as well as Lake Huron.
- 16:20And it does go north and south across the one Inland Lake and
- 16:25then you do up along, 23 along the Lakeshore.
- 16:28So you do get a, if there's a nice breeze coming off there, it
- 16:31does help. So Don't know how much it'll
- 16:34help me sitting in the jump seat, but I will just make sure
- 16:38I have plenty of Frozen water bottles with me.
- 16:41Yeah. But yeah, I mean, all in all it
- 16:43was a decent, couple weeks. If you bring a cooler to keep
- 16:47your water bottles in. Uh-huh, if you have ice in the
- 16:53cooler, take a rag or bring to rags one that you keep in the
- 16:57core. The other around your neck and
- 16:59then swap them every half hour or so.
- 17:02Yes, I'm well aware Where I don't have a say in my POV
- 17:06either. I know how, I know how it works.
- 17:09Okay but no yeah so you haven't set up the elbow PVC pipe.
- 17:18No I haven't I can't use it because I don't have enough
- 17:24deadhead time to make it worth it.
- 17:26Yeah they only one I really have enough deadhead time.
- 17:29I mean my primary but that's a POV row.
- 17:32I just get lucky enough. The get to use an llv when I run
- 17:36it with my Ox. So it that helps.
- 17:39Yeah, I don't get the mileage, which I'm not worried about but
- 17:41my POV honestly, I don't think would last through the route
- 17:45right now and I'd really hate to be on the far Northwest end of
- 17:49that route where there's absolutely no cell service and
- 17:51the car just finally dies. So they're working with me and
- 17:56all I got a few more months here, and I'll be full-time.
- 17:58So they at least work with me on that.
- 18:01I am not going to complain one. Oh no.
- 18:03I'm saying you've seen that on Facebook.
- 18:06That accurately. Take a PVC elbow.
- 18:09Yep, I have seen it many times. I don't have enough time or
- 18:16enough. Or for a long enough distance
- 18:20for it to even be worth trying. Right.
- 18:24I completely understand that. Yeah.
- 18:27So, but yeah. So, when life, throws you a
- 18:31rotten lemons? Like, you know, the finance, go
- 18:34with my car, getting totaled out by somebody, that should not
- 18:36have been driving it and then the insurance company being
- 18:40awesome in my settlement paid off my loan and I still had a
- 18:43nice Hefty down payment, I upgraded.
- 18:47So I went from a He 18, Jeep Compass.
- 18:49Latitude basically, the base model they I had the cold
- 18:52weather package heated seats and steering wheel.
- 18:54And I want that was the one thing my boyfriend's.
- 18:56Like, can we keep the heated seats, please?
- 18:59So I found a 2021 Jeep Compass Trailhawk with never buy
- 19:06anything base familiar with that trail.
- 19:07Hawks the off-road package, but it also has the tow package and
- 19:11it has all the bells and whistles.
- 19:12The heated seats. Steering wheel, the lane assist,
- 19:15the adaptive cruise controls. I had fun playing with all that.
- 19:18That my trip to Saint Marie. Yeah, I got when I went in and
- 19:22test drove it, I was like, yep, I'm home.
- 19:25So I've got that picked it up. Last Wednesday.
- 19:30Thank you. Shout out to a PC.
- 19:32You and being awesome with getting me pre-qualified before
- 19:37they got my settlement, check for the other one.
- 19:39So they've been great for me to work with on personal loans car
- 19:43loans. Checking savings, my kids
- 19:46savings accounts. I I personally have never had
- 19:49any bad dealings with them at all, so but yeah.
- 19:52So I forgot my new car and I'm enjoying it.
- 19:57And I get to take it to Ohio in a couple weeks for a weekend
- 19:59away from everything. Right.
- 20:03Yeah, I am looking forward to some personal long heavy metal
- 20:09tattoo Festival. So if any of you out there that
- 20:11are listening, that are going to be a incarceration Festival,
- 20:14shout out. If you see me, give me a holler
- 20:18if not, you know, we'll all be there.
- 20:20But yeah, I'm definitely looking forward to that weekend away
- 20:24from everything. Definitely take a lot off your
- 20:28mind. Oh, yes.
- 20:30Yes. The past few weeks, we've had a
- 20:33bunch of State conventions going on.
- 20:36Anybody want to share any details, I know.
- 20:39We can't explain a lot of stuff that occurred, but we can talk
- 20:44about how it was, and what you saw kind of things.
- 20:48Being me, me me me. That's awesome.
- 21:20We had the committeeman position up.
- 21:25I ran against the incumbent, did not make it.
- 21:30I wasn't expecting to me. And that committee, men that did
- 21:35win have very similar outlooks on how we like the union to be
- 21:42in the long run. So I wasn't upset for not
- 21:46winning. We headed A total of seven
- 21:49revolutions, seven resolutions to of, which, for under new
- 21:54business, that passed. And we're going to National.
- 21:58We've had. We also had a few Constitution
- 22:01changes the past. I don't have my back in front of
- 22:05me. You go through what those are.
- 22:07But they were only state level changes.
- 22:10One of which was introduced a new business by first timer,
- 22:16which past surely For was our national representative are I've
- 22:23missed most of her presentation because I was on the
- 22:26Constitution committee so IG. Cannot, you know, we were
- 22:31beating during our presentation, one of our constitution changes
- 22:36that they will bring in the Constitution and resolution, for
- 22:40me at least one day in advance prior to started to mention.
- 22:44So we can me on these things and not miss.
- 22:48Orton business like that. Yeah, some of the old-timers
- 22:53said that they have had that before but they used to do that
- 22:59and whatever reason they just stopped.
- 23:01I don't know why, how long ago that was last year was my first
- 23:08year on the Constitution committee.
- 23:11So I can't speak for anything prior to that James.
- 23:15I'll let you lead off with Michigan.
- 23:16Well, I know, Had more people than last year for first timers,
- 23:23which was great to see. It was very enlightening and a
- 23:28lot of respects being my first time as an actual delegate.
- 23:33It came with a lot of responsibility that I felt at
- 23:37least to do the right thing for the carrier's.
- 23:41Not only for me, but for everybody in my County, as well
- 23:46as in the state and in the country, because Because you go
- 23:49to these things and you're actually making decisions that
- 23:52can go on to the National Convention.
- 23:56So being able to sit there and put my own words to it, without
- 24:01just sitting and being an observer or asking are now
- 24:06director of Labor Relations to suspend the rules.
- 24:09So I can present a resolution like I did last year makes it
- 24:13more interesting and and made me more involved in what was going
- 24:17on. On the first day, we got our
- 24:20resolutions and Constitution changes.
- 24:23And that night, I read through every single one.
- 24:26And mark, the ones that I needed, either more information
- 24:28on did not like things like that.
- 24:31So that way, when we finally got to that in the convention
- 24:34proceedings, we could flow through it fat.
- 24:36I could flow through it faster and as they say, object to the
- 24:41ones, I needed either clarification or thought was not
- 24:46well written not well presented or Didn't really make logical
- 24:50sense to me. Kristen can attest.
- 24:52I did a lot C. Move your seat up by the
- 24:57microphone. Yes, I had to move my seat up by
- 25:00the microphone, but also that help that I could assist in
- 25:03people with that are vertically challenged be able to talk into
- 25:08the mic. Also it was the fact that there
- 25:11were so many, there were actually duplicate resolutions
- 25:14that were just different enough that they had to.
- 25:17They had to be separated. Resolutions.
- 25:19So if you voted to pass one, the other one got rejected.
- 25:22If you rejected the first one, the second one came up for a
- 25:25vote. So it was interesting to see all
- 25:29that process and ours. Of course, the person who was
- 25:34with ours, was our very own director of Labor Relations from
- 25:37the state of Michigan Bridge at Bossier, who was our national
- 25:40representative at ours and she brought up some good points and
- 25:45some interesting facts. And had a great meeting with
- 25:49her. It was nice to have a sit-down
- 25:51conversation with her and I appreciate her taking the time
- 25:55to give me her opinion on things.
- 25:59So it was, it was a great time overall, and hopefully, we can
- 26:03continue to work together and resolve issues and things like
- 26:06that. Overall.
- 26:08I think we did a have a really, really quick convention.
- 26:12If I might say because it was a lot shorter than the last one,
- 26:17and a lot of X. Yeah, as well.
- 26:20This I've been to numerous convention so this definitely
- 26:23wasn't my first time as a delegate at State Convention, we
- 26:27had twenty first timers this year which was more than last
- 26:31year. We I was counting them as they
- 26:35were going up there and getting their stuff and posing for the
- 26:38picture and we had 33 resolutions that were they could
- 26:44go on to National of those 33. Why I do believe, if I just
- 26:50counted right 16 of them passed, we did have a new business from
- 26:56a first-timer resolution that wasn't included in the packet.
- 27:00She, she was nervous going up there but it was an awesome,
- 27:03awesome resolution. Like I said, first time up at
- 27:06the mic, pretty nervous. So I kind of I let her to where
- 27:09she just kind of stopped, didn't know what else to go.
- 27:12So I hopped up and I finished it off for and her regular who I So
- 27:18happen to attend. And was one of them.
- 27:20I went out to dinner with on Tuesday evening.
- 27:23She, she thanked me for. She's like, I just wanted a
- 27:26passion. She says, thank you so much for
- 27:28going up there and helping her. I'm like, hey, not a problem and
- 27:31that resolution did pass. So, it was an awesome
- 27:36resolution. I'll give it to think that one
- 27:38had any discussion before it was passed either know, it really
- 27:41did good. Yeah, and even, you know, yeah,
- 27:45everybody really applauded that one, I'll give her that and
- 27:48Orson, when it passed everything, she got a standing
- 27:50ovation to just number one, because she was a first timer
- 27:53and put up that resolution. And number two, it was an
- 27:56awesome resolution. So hurry, if you had the guts to
- 27:59get up there and actually put it up, yes.
- 28:01Yes, and my resolution on did pass without any discussion so
- 28:09that one went through rather easily.
- 28:11Oh yeah, we had some good ones go through.
- 28:13We had a few withdrawn because of a couple that failed.
- 28:16They kind of went hand in hand with the other one again.
- 28:19So yeah yeah. All in all that it did go rather
- 28:21quickly this time around I will say that it was nice to see a
- 28:25lot of great information that was passed around.
- 28:29I did run for junior member that was actually the only position
- 28:33on the State Board. We actually had to take a vote
- 28:35on everybody else got voted back in unanimously.
- 28:39No, nobody running against him. There was three of us that ran
- 28:43for the junior member. I did not make it.
- 28:46That's okay though, bill it Is your turn mine?
- 28:50Yes. All, you know, dear - my turn.
- 28:54Yeah, we started our convention on Sundays and there's a lot of
- 29:04meetings laborers stewards and everything else that they get it
- 29:09out of the way before the actual convention starts.
- 29:12But II was surprised, I'm in line for, you know, my
- 29:17registration. Credentials and some woman heard
- 29:21me. She goes bill, and I said looked
- 29:23around. And she gives your bill and I
- 29:25said, yes, I am. She has no your bill from the
- 29:28podcast. I said, which one she has
- 29:31United. We scan.
- 29:32I love it. You guys are awesome about it.
- 29:35And, I mean, it's like, you know, I found a long-lost friend
- 29:38and I never knew I had, and do the rest of the convention,
- 29:42there was close to 30 some people that, you know, we're all
- 29:47You know, kind of like groupies for us and it's like, you know,
- 29:50that being real and made me feel so good.
- 29:52That people are listening and getting advice and everything
- 29:55from us and they really appreciate it because they're
- 29:58often and offices that don't have, you know, access to the
- 30:01information or where to eat, where to even look for it.
- 30:04So we're doing a great job, folks.
- 30:07Pat y'all's yourselves on the back.
- 30:09Our convention was, you know, standard Pennsylvania
- 30:12Convention. It's a well-run And Timely and
- 30:16everything. They were a couple fo pause that
- 30:19were brought to their attention by your favorite asshole.
- 30:22Again, you know, one of the things that struck me about the
- 30:25convention was here. We are again.
- 30:28We're a 4,000-plus, strong member State and we had a hard
- 30:34time getting 25% of the Canada to show up at the convention.
- 30:39And it's just, it's it's a dire, reminder, folks of the apathy
- 30:44that our membership to From and I, you know, I applaud all of
- 30:49you on this podcast because of the fact that we have gotten
- 30:53recognition for bringing people back into Union and lifting
- 30:56their spirits up and and making them want to stand up and fight
- 30:59for themselves. So, you know, kudos to all of
- 31:02you even to myself. But you know, this is one of the
- 31:07greatest dangers besides the post office.
- 31:09You know, to this craft is the apathy, and we've got to find a
- 31:14way of turning and people around and getting them.
- 31:16The Leave into in the Union in their stewards system, in their
- 31:20Rio labor department and you know at the presidential and
- 31:24vice presidential level in regards to defending their
- 31:27interest. In protecting them from you know
- 31:29whatever harassment or intimidation.
- 31:31They're encountering every day in their office that like I said
- 31:35it was you know business during the day and alcoholic business
- 31:39at night and it's fun. I'll pull a muscle, don't pull a
- 31:44muscle patting yourself on the back there, Bill.
- 31:46Oh I'll tell you what it's funny.
- 31:50Because, at night time, we had 30, 40 people around this big
- 31:53Courtyard. That was in the center of the
- 31:55hotel with a fire pit and everything and ensure, the
- 31:58alcohol flowed freely and food and snacks, and everything else.
- 32:02But, you know, you know how much we got done discussing the the
- 32:06resolutions and everything, you know, sitting around that little
- 32:08fire pit. I mean, you know, people think
- 32:11it's just a party but boy, we're out there to ten thirty one
- 32:14night, you know, discussing them several.
- 32:16I went back to the room till 1:00 still working on stuff.
- 32:19Joe. It's like the National
- 32:21Convention are all. It's like one big party folks.
- 32:24It's not a party, it's harder work than carrying your damn
- 32:28raft because it's a lot longer and it's all mental.
- 32:32It's it's that mental drain that it does on you and he actually
- 32:37come back more tired than you are.
- 32:39If you were running near out that day or for that week
- 32:43because it really is, it is quite big a couple of couple
- 32:46days after You can press it, it really is a mental drain and I
- 32:51mean, I get it where people have that the mentality because they
- 32:55see the pictures from, you know, the Banquets and they see the
- 32:59photos posted if, you know, people gathered around out on
- 33:03the patios and whatnot and with their beers but they don't,
- 33:06they're not hearing the conversation that were talking
- 33:09at those tables which is like what bill was saying.
- 33:13A lot of us talk about the resolutions that because you
- 33:16know, we get a chance Chance to look at them before they're
- 33:18presented. And so, a lot of that talk is
- 33:20about that or it's, you know, you're talking about your
- 33:24conditions in your office or its work.
- 33:26Talk usually for I would say, a good 75, 90 percent of it is
- 33:31work. Talk was where decompressing
- 33:33from sitting on a convention floor all day long?
- 33:35Well, we individual that actually had the core in the tub
- 33:42for outlaws alcohol needs. Mmm.
- 33:46Bart is he hardly drinks but he's got a flip but he's got a
- 33:51flip chart on there for Resolutions and everything in
- 33:53discussions and articles and everything.
- 33:56And it's like, you know, folks he oh II sit there lab because
- 34:01if I see a beer in his hand I'm surprised because he's so busy
- 34:04working on this stuff. 24/7. Yeah.
- 34:08And the the ironic part of it is he's a retiree, I know exactly
- 34:13who you're talking about. Yes, he he owes you one.
- 34:16Of those one of those handful of retirees that is still very much
- 34:21involved in. What is going on today and an
- 34:24acid? Yes, definitely definitely.
- 34:27I did have conversation with him at mid states.
- 34:30He did a ton. So yeah.
- 34:31I yeah definitely one of those awesome assets that we enjoy
- 34:35having that wants to see betterment for the craft even
- 34:38though they're no longer have their, you know, boots in the
- 34:42trenches. So to say it's like we're at the
- 34:45resort we were. That because of, you know, they
- 34:48recommend having reservations for the meals.
- 34:51We know that were not included in the convention.
- 34:55So Monday night, we had dinner reservation at one at the
- 35:00Italian restaurant. There, one of the girls from my
- 35:04office, it was there for you know her husband was there and a
- 35:07couple that their friends with their not postal workers just
- 35:11happened to be up there in the area.
- 35:13Also she asked me if If they want, could they join us for
- 35:19dinner? I'm like, well, let me know, but
- 35:21just make sure they're not going to be upset or offended that
- 35:27we're talking shop through the whole meal, you know, in
- 35:30science, you know, because like you said, you were just saying
- 35:33it. Even though work off, we're not
- 35:37during the meetings were having dinner on our own.
- 35:41We're still talking about what happened that day on the
- 35:44convention floor, where you help you.
- 35:47Resolute, what do we think of this resolution or Constitution
- 35:50change? You know what can we do to
- 35:52improve everything? Yeah, the biggest thing I saw
- 35:55overall was how dedicated a lot of these people were to this
- 35:59information. And when we got to after
- 36:03objections because our resolutions, we go through the
- 36:06resolution and they first read the number.
- 36:09And if nobody had check subjects to it first, then they read the
- 36:13resolution, then if nobody objects to it.
- 36:15Once the gavel drops. Ops it is considered past.
- 36:18So after we object-- we then go through all of them and then we
- 36:23go back through the ones we objected and discuss them and a
- 36:27couple of them, we get 10 minutes total time to actually
- 36:31discuss some two minutes per person and that's in our state
- 36:34constitution to do that. And with that we had some people
- 36:39that actually requested more time to discuss the item because
- 36:43the ideas weren't fully finished and that requires a vote.
- 36:46The floor for people to extend the time to talk about it.
- 36:50And we did that several times because it was such a good
- 36:54discussion. We needed to complete the
- 36:56discussion and finish it out and it was really good.
- 36:59And then at times we were in the middle of a discussion and
- 37:01people were saying the same thing over and over and then
- 37:04people would just step up and basically called a question for
- 37:07the vote and get people to vote for it.
- 37:10Because you're saying the same things over and over we might as
- 37:12well move on to the next thing. That's one of the best things I
- 37:15see is. People actually getting up and
- 37:18being passionate about talking about the topics that are up for
- 37:22vote. It really is humbling to think
- 37:26that even though we don't see this in the Post online and we
- 37:31don't see it in action in our offices and things like that.
- 37:35Like we would want to be able to go to these conventions, is a
- 37:41great way to see, kind of behind the curtain of what's going on.
- 37:46And even if you're not a delegate sometimes attending,
- 37:49these conventions is a great way to go.
- 37:52I met a few non delegates at my convention.
- 37:55And like Bill said, I we had several people walk up and go
- 37:58oh, you're that guy on the podcast or her Kristen would be
- 38:02your that girl on the podcast, things like that.
- 38:06And it's so nice and humbling to know that we're all here and
- 38:11we're actually making a difference, just like the
- 38:14conventions, make a difference. This podcast is making a
- 38:18difference and I really want to thank every single one of our
- 38:21fans out there for sharing us listening to us and all that
- 38:25stuff. We've had one that we were
- 38:27discussing that you know debate con got extended two or three
- 38:34times and then they would not let us extend time anymore and
- 38:38it wasn't because it was the same point being brought up back
- 38:44and forth. It was just dude.
- 38:46You time, we need to move this on because I think it was a that
- 38:52debate was over an amendment to what was originally proposed and
- 38:57that's what's nice when you have a resolution on the floor and
- 39:00it's getting disgusted. Then people are objecting to
- 39:03this language or that language, it can be amended and the the
- 39:09offering party in our case, you know what, we call chapter can
- 39:13turn around and remove it and and work on it, some more and
- 39:18bring it back on the closing day as new business.
- 39:21That can be voted on which, you know, gives you the time and
- 39:24opportunity to collaborate with, you know, people around you to
- 39:28fine-tune it to the point where it's acceptable to the
- 39:31individuals who objected to language originally.
- 39:35Yeah, you know to collaboration it's a collaboration for and
- 39:38against a resolution but it gets you to the final language which
- 39:43can be then an accepted resolution.
- 39:46Yeah. Because the The premise of the
- 39:48idea of the actual resolution was a good idea, it's just you
- 39:52needed. A tighten up, the language more
- 39:53for it to fly. I get it.
- 39:55Totally. Yeah, we've had a few of those
- 39:57two and sometimes it just comes down to changing just one word
- 40:01word. Yep.
- 40:03Yep. And and makes it so much better
- 40:05to change that one word to pass it on than it does to have the
- 40:09original word that was there and was to have everybody in the
- 40:12room actually agree. That that one word is the only
- 40:15thing that needs to be changed. It is an amazing thing to see.
- 40:18Yeah. And it could be something as
- 40:19simple as instead of will shall or vice versa.
- 40:23And, you know, it's funny, here's the funny part, is that,
- 40:26you know, after seven Hard Apple Cider Zan date Fireballs.
- 40:30Yeah. You finally find enough people
- 40:33to agree with the wording, right?
- 40:38We call that I'll put it this way.
- 40:39There was no drinking on the floor that we knew of just all
- 40:43to be aware. This is that we know of that we
- 40:46know of of that that type of discussions done off off the
- 40:51convention for the floor. Yeah, on the patio.
- 40:54Yeah. So let me make this perfectly
- 40:57clear to myself. the 603 standards are no longer viable
- 41:04because they were established under the old mail count system,
- 41:09The news yet under the new standards, which have not been
- 41:12published. For the Rex program which has
- 41:18been now 11 plus years in the making have not been updated
- 41:23yet. There are references to parcel
- 41:29things in the wrecks guide and on the quick reference sheet
- 41:33that that both management and the union have provided.
- 41:37However there is no definitive measurements.
- 41:42For what a parcel is or is not and this is related to unscanned
- 41:47parcel. And so, just like the free is
- 41:51also not been updated correctly, correctly, 6050 06:03 probably
- 41:55will not be updated for several years.
- 41:57I believe the last one before this one was updated in the 70s
- 42:02and then this one was updated in 2013.
- 42:05So if that's any track record of how long it takes them to update
- 42:08documents concerning this stuff, there's area That's supposedly,
- 42:14it's in the works but until then you can put you my copy and move
- 42:19my grave. Okay, yeah.
- 42:22And carrier, discretion how you guys want to approach it?
- 42:28And everything listed in the wrecks guide and the quick
- 42:33reference guide and the 99 page guide all point to its carrier
- 42:38discretion. Carriers are the ones that are
- 42:41supposed to be deciding these things.
- 42:44So get with your local Steward if management is hassling you
- 42:48especially if they're saying it has to be shoebox-sized.
- 42:50That's a city reference referencing.
- 42:55Why would you say that's a shitty reference?
- 43:16I had an off the record conversation with our national
- 43:19board member asked. If there was any updates to the
- 43:23our Cam and was told that it is getting ready to go to final
- 43:29approval, and then printing, but they were not overly enthused
- 43:34with some of the language that was put into it.
- 43:39Oh Jesus, it was in their opinion.
- 43:43It's a bit big. Most of wrecks.
- 43:46That Rex most of Rex's bag. Well-known saying, the, our
- 43:50camera which is the joint manual can by giving you reference to
- 43:56all all the manuals and everything.
- 44:00Taking it back back, step by step, like the Jake a, the city
- 44:03Side. Okay, it's supposed to look
- 44:05eliminate the gray areas language-wise.
- 44:08His in the contract to something that's agreed upon before both
- 44:13parties. So you have something in the
- 44:15contract that, you know, you look at.
- 44:17And it's like, that's not, you know, it's a gray area.
- 44:19It's supposed to fill in that Gap but we'll see when it comes
- 44:23out. I don't understand.
- 44:25I thought three Master evil Engineers got together, agreed
- 44:31upon all these, you know, Alberta and not metrics and
- 44:36everything else. And now we're in a position
- 44:40where these guys have never rode in the back of a truck or
- 44:43anything are sitting there saying, okay, we might have
- 44:46missed this or that. No, no, no no.
- 44:56The engineers only designed the program for the calculations.
- 45:01The numbers for the values were argued back and forth between
- 45:07the Postal Service in the union, the numbers that they actually
- 45:10charge for each of the parts are where actually figured out
- 45:15between the two. Probably, because the engineers
- 45:19would just basically build the program to work the way that the
- 45:22Union in the Postal Service, wanted to do, the numbers had to
- 45:27come from other factors which includes people that actually
- 45:31have access to that information even though at mid states the
- 45:36regional manager proved that they don't have access to those
- 45:39numbers as managed it somehow. Yep.
- 45:41But that's how they figured it out.
- 45:44So don't don't blame the engineers for the actual numbers
- 45:48because they a just built the program.
- 45:50The way they were told to build it.
- 45:52Look, if your name is Miracle, then you ought to be able to
- 45:55pull one out. We're hoping for a miracle.
- 46:03He'll marry same thing. We're all praying.
- 46:05I'm an atheist. I'm praying swear to God.
- 46:09So, any other important updates you guys have that.
- 46:13You guys want to put forth from your state conventions that
- 46:16interesting facts people that talk to You information that you
- 46:21want to relay to people and let them know that maybe they should
- 46:25go to their conventions. Well, I had a couple people who
- 46:29didn't know the proceedings in regards, the balloting and
- 46:32everything else, which we had to explain that to them, they
- 46:38didn't understand, you know, when they got up to the
- 46:41microphone that they had to identify themselves, the proper
- 46:44procedure for Robert's Rules, And yeah, just a little nuances
- 46:49that they follow and you know the that the parliamentarian is
- 46:53sitting there making sure that you follow these, you know,
- 46:56rules in regards to how you conduct your meeting and they
- 47:00were like you know well why is this a present talking to this
- 47:03lady? Well because this lady does this
- 47:06for a job and you know this is her living and she knows more
- 47:10about the rules than you know most of our state officers now
- 47:16you know, they traveled Around the country, you know, doing
- 47:18this for a living and they enforce it to make sure that,
- 47:21you know, you are within the guidelines of the of your
- 47:24Charter and the Robert's rules in regards of recognizing or you
- 47:28know, like you have any discussions the time limits and
- 47:32all that everything has to follow the rules.
- 47:35So they were surprised how strict they were in, you know,
- 47:40most instances but we had we had one lapse that was brought to
- 47:44their attention and hopefully it won't.
- 47:46Then again, yeah, I got smacked down a couple of times, just a
- 47:50simple meat. Makes it that people make, you
- 47:52know, I wasn't the only one to make that mistake.
- 47:55But unfortunately I was the one at the mic when the lady finally
- 47:58decided to tell the president, hey, you shouldn't be doing it
- 48:02that way. So I got I got the smackdown but
- 48:05everybody else got notified by me getting this back down that I
- 48:09wasn't supposed to be doing it that way.
- 48:11That calls the smackdown but it was actually a polite and
- 48:15informative. But you know, if you do
- 48:18something wrong, you you need to do it, you need to get told how
- 48:21to do it right. Then that's the keys because
- 48:24they're actually transcripting the meetings, they are actually
- 48:28have a transcriptionist just like a courtroom writing the
- 48:31minutes of the meeting there. We had a first-timer come up to
- 48:36quit. You know she just wanted
- 48:37clarification on one of the resolutions and they need to
- 48:41explain to her that you have to eject to it just to ask a
- 48:45clarifying question. Well, No, no no.
- 48:47You don't have to object to it. You I mean, you know, we're
- 48:50going up because if there's no objection it is if there's no
- 48:53objection, it automatically passes.
- 48:55No, no. You can actually get up there
- 48:58for it and ask for a clarification of the language,
- 49:01though. That that that that ax is seen
- 49:05as an objection. You can be for it but subject to
- 49:08the language. I did that on a couple.
- 49:12I did that on a couple in you you object to it first and then
- 49:16when it comes up under the objections, you go objected for
- 49:19clarification, right? And usually once they give the
- 49:22clarification then you can turn around.
- 49:25And after your clarification you can just go call to question.
- 49:30See. Now in our state, when you go up
- 49:32to the microphone, you suppose you have your yay or nay card
- 49:35with you and you're supposed to front it, to the president,
- 49:39who's calling the microphones out, and right, as far as
- 49:43whether you're objecting or agreeing with it, and then she
- 49:46alternates them, you know, back and forth until there's either,
- 49:49no of more objections or supporting Arguments for it.
- 49:52And then she knew through the rest of either objections or
- 49:55supporting before he closed the question or you run out of time.
- 49:59People going up there to didn't have their cards and you know
- 50:02that she has to are you for it or are you against it?
- 50:05Well, you know, what's going on, you know, it just if you do it
- 50:09the way it's supposed to be, it's a lot smoother, you know,
- 50:13like I said, you know, we had, you know, 2728 newbies are so
- 50:19you know they got you got their feet wet and learn a little
- 50:22lesson. Yeah but all in all an arse at
- 50:25least it was very professional. Everybody acted with good too.
- 50:29Orem, there weren't outbursts or courtroom drama, so to speak,
- 50:36kind of thing. And to be honest, the level of
- 50:40intelligent thought, people had towards the resolutions was
- 50:45refreshing. People actually stood up and
- 50:47voice their concerns in a reasonable and logical sense.
- 50:54There wasn't any attacks on people or wasn't any.
- 50:58It was nothing. Got heated basically?
- 51:01Yes. Yeah.
- 51:02And last year, we had a couple instances where it got heated
- 51:07over specific people, not things, but people.
- 51:12But this year, it was really nice to flow through the stuff
- 51:15and get through it with logical. Decorum.
- 51:20We had Rapids, what we had but it was all Yes, it was all the
- 51:31fashionable. Filthy.
- 51:32Yes. It was all professional.
- 51:35But some of it did get heated and it was not geared,
- 51:41specifically, to an individual or, you know, or anything.
- 51:45It was Henry, get a little passionate about their stance.
- 51:50We actually are one of our past presidents.
- 51:54He actually stepped away from the mic because he, you know, he
- 51:58realized you were starting to get a little carried away there
- 52:02on what you know what he was arguing.
- 52:04So he stepped away collected himself and came back up to make
- 52:08his point. How do you talk about when you
- 52:09get overwhelmed, take a step back, take a breath, and then
- 52:12step back into it. Yep.
- 52:15Yeah, I had to hold myself back in one point because I felt like
- 52:21singing, you know, I just wanted to say I Left My Heart in San
- 52:25Francisco way, Tony Bennett. But, you know, Little voice in
- 52:31the back of my head said, they don't want to hear you go.
- 52:33Yeah, it's nice to know you do have a conscious sometimes that
- 52:39what that was? I think so, he's coming fast.
- 52:44I don't know, I don't believe in that.
- 52:50I'll tell you what I did something magnanimous.
- 52:53And you know and you know people congratulate thank me and all
- 52:58our veterans unit. It was short 35 tickets of
- 53:02meeting 100 for the convention and it's five dollars a year,
- 53:07okay? And yeah, they made the
- 53:08announcement and all that. So I went up there and I said,
- 53:11yeah, okay, I'd like to volunteer to pay for those 35
- 53:14tickets and they go. Well, they're $5 each I said and
- 53:19they said well, you know how much money that is and I said,
- 53:22and so they turn to wrap. They kicked.
- 53:25They turned around and came over to get, I gave him the cash, you
- 53:28know, and they handed out 30. I've memberships to the veterans
- 53:31to anybody who wanted to sign up for him, which which turned
- 53:36around and made them eligible for the for book.
- 53:39Grants that the veterans were given out that night at the
- 53:42dinner table, that our annual banquet, that's how may be made
- 53:46me feel good by Gars. My membership was Terrace here
- 53:50for Veterans for the veterans Club.
- 53:51Yeah, yeah. Well, that's because you're ugly
- 53:55could be. Yeah.
- 53:57Hey, now let's keep it. Let's keep the car on here just
- 54:00like the State Convention. Well, if it's not true,
- 54:29The mail truck and I've gotten several little diecast models.
- 54:34So I turned around and I had this one where the last bid on,
- 54:38it was $19. So I just wrote 50 dollars in
- 54:41there. Would everybody just cussed me
- 54:43out for you guys as well? Hold on, is the money going to
- 54:46pack for a good reason, everything.
- 54:48Yeah. Okay.
- 54:49Yeah, you know, am I giving this a little kid in my wrath and to
- 54:51make his debut as yeah? Okay.
- 54:53Well, what do you get upset about?
- 54:55It's my money, you know, they didn't say nothing when I spent,
- 54:58you know, Dollars for a throw blanket last year.
- 55:02The dog loves that blanket to. Hmm, I know that pack is a big
- 55:08big thing at the convention. Ours, big big donation at ours
- 55:15for it. It was really nice to see a lot
- 55:17of people participating in that and we had three items go up for
- 55:21bid and they all went for exorbitant amount of money's in
- 55:26my opinion. But I'm on table two.
- 55:28So it's anything. for five dollars, that is exorbitant to
- 55:31me, but But it was actually really nice to see people
- 55:40getting involved in that and one of the one of our carriers
- 55:43husband's is a professional Auctioneer and he comes to these
- 55:49conventions and he actually is our Auctioneer for those events.
- 55:52So it's really nice to have a real Auctioneer stand up and do
- 55:55the auction will ask if we used to have one that came to our
- 56:04dimensions, He has completely retired at this point.
- 56:09So in the last two years we were at 1600, which is on Indian
- 56:13ground, which is it not legal to have an auction so on the, you
- 56:19know, on the reservation ground. So the last time they were a few
- 56:23years back, they actually went off the reservation to hold the
- 56:28banquet. Not an auction this year and
- 56:30last year, they just did a the pack banquet I donation for the
- 56:36meal and then the silent auctions.
- 56:39So it'll be interesting to see you next year when it's when the
- 56:42state conventions up the street, what they do, you know what they
- 56:45decide to do? If we go back to having an
- 56:47auction or not all in all, I think it was a great event.
- 56:53A lot of new faces, a lot of non delegates and delegates at ours
- 56:58and participation was up compared to last year.
- 57:03The number of people there were up from last year.
- 57:07There are so at least so you see people getting involved like
- 57:12that. You know, I believe a lot of
- 57:14that has to do with the latest updates to our pay.
- 57:20But part of that also tells me that people want to get
- 57:25involved, people want to make a difference in this community of
- 57:29rural carriers and want to take care of the rural carriers want
- 57:34to help themselves. But at the same time, help
- 57:37others. Barriers.
- 57:38So not only that but that sidebar to, that is the amount
- 57:42of people who put their names in for committeeman positions, on
- 57:47our state board. You know, that they're just
- 57:50local people, maybe some of them are officers in their chapters
- 57:53or whatever. I mean, but we had at least 11
- 57:57people throw their hats in the ring for the first time to how
- 58:01the only at the State Board and that's encouraging the sieve
- 58:03them wanting to get their feet wet at that level, had it all
- 58:07now, I hear ya, how long, how many rounds that of Elections
- 58:12that take? Well, that was over three
- 58:15different positions. The one was a one against 11,
- 58:22was the for that took two rounds and then we had the other one
- 58:30which was like five people and that took three rounds.
- 58:34Okay, so that one too bad. No, no.
- 58:37Because the ones with the multiples of 4 and the 5 day,
- 58:40they both after the first round, the lowest person that was still
- 58:45left bailed out. Okay.
- 58:49Yeah, yeah. So, you know, it left.
- 58:52Yes. Do it when the three on three on
- 58:53three so it went fairly easy and the three-on-three, IT the
- 58:58two-thirds majority. So, okay, yeah, they want out,
- 59:02right? That's in the one was a slam
- 59:04dunk. That I had mentioned before we
- 59:06record it. We had it was me and the
- 59:10incumbent out of it was like, 820 votes.
- 59:16I forget the exact and put it for 25 was a simple majority.
- 59:21He got. So I got 160 something and you
- 59:25got the rest of them, but for someone who's hasn't been in,
- 59:30you know, just recently really got involved.
- 59:33That's more than double just my district which tells me that are
- 59:37People other than my district who obviously all voted for me.
- 59:41Did, you know, kid won't want me in there?
- 59:44I voted for you twice, Josh, I appreciate it.
- 59:50I voted for me 21 times because there's only it was only three
- 59:55delegates to split. 60, some votes.
- 59:57So wait, sounds like you're from Philadelphia.
- 1:00:00Yeah. And have to count them out to
- 1:00:24each other all the time. Gosh your muffled.
- 1:00:44Yeah I got mine out of my district.
- 1:00:46I had 45 44 votes for mine while the rest.
- 1:00:50Everybody else had 45 because I was a junior delegate in my
- 1:00:54County so I got the least number of votes available but we split
- 1:01:00it up 44 and then everybody else had 45.
- 1:01:04So, but there was one delegate, and this is why participation
- 1:01:09matters. One delegate voting against my
- 1:01:12County would take out three and a half people because they had
- 1:01:16192 votes. Oh, by themselves, they were
- 1:01:21voting their entire County strength by themselves, because
- 1:01:24they were the only person to come.
- 1:01:26So you have to remember 192 192 votes, right?
- 1:01:32It's one vote per day. Elegant know, ours is voting
- 1:01:36your county strength so it County strength.
- 1:01:39So if you're coming one, vote one vote, something like that.
- 1:01:46Yeah. So like a paying Member One
- 1:01:50vote. Okay.
- 1:01:51You could have had a hundred ninety two delegates there.
- 1:01:54No, because it's $1, you get her 10 votes?
- 1:01:57Remember, you get 10 volts per delegate?
- 1:01:59Well, right? Yeah, because you know, animal
- 1:02:01for my County voting strength. It was 125 total.
- 1:02:06There was two of us, there is delegates.
- 1:02:09So one took 62, I took 63 because I'm the senior board
- 1:02:13member. So you vote for the number of
- 1:02:16dues-paying members, you have in your county and at least in our
- 1:02:20state, it's Per County or County grouping, because some counties
- 1:02:25have merged together because of lack of participation.
- 1:02:28Well, those counties not only do they get the strength of the
- 1:02:31county that they live in. But if they have other counties
- 1:02:34that they've merged with, they get the strength of those
- 1:02:36counties to. And if they're the only one
- 1:02:39coming up from a two, three, four County Section.
- 1:02:42They're going to have a lot more votes than somebody coming up
- 1:02:45from a single County that has good participation.
- 1:02:49Okay? So like we do it.
- 1:02:52So if, for example, my district is right around 350 and I
- 1:02:58believe we get one delegate per six members and you get a vote.
- 1:03:03Her delegate, so I had like, 60 61 delegate, you know, delegates
- 1:03:10available. So I get, you know, those 61
- 1:03:12votes. So, each vote, I cast this for
- 1:03:15six members in. All right, iris is by 10.
- 1:03:18I've never heard it by 6, and then you get one extra for
- 1:03:21anything above that and ours if I tend to, yeah, I don't make, I
- 1:03:26don't write the rules. No, but you can play.
- 1:03:31If you pass the Constitutional change.
- 1:03:33You can write a resolution. Yes, yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:37We had a girl. What?
- 1:03:46We do things a little differently.
- 1:03:50Small, you're talking about a delegate for every six or every
- 1:03:5510 members, we basically, if you remember, Good standing and you
- 1:03:59show up to the convention and you are registered by the
- 1:04:03opening day of convention, you're seated as a delegate and
- 1:04:06we had 36 total delegates, that are at our recent convention,
- 1:04:11just to put it in perspective, a little overwhelmed 229 delegates
- 1:04:20and delegates. I know there's there's some
- 1:04:22states out there that have even less delegates from there and
- 1:04:26you have having them less dues-paying care.
- 1:04:29Years, you know you think about States like Alaska, Hawaii,
- 1:04:34places like that which have a very small region of delivery
- 1:04:38that they do. And the number of carriers that
- 1:04:41cover those areas and they don't and Alaska and Hawaii are
- 1:04:45actually the two states that don't have a state Association.
- 1:04:48They are members of a additional Estate Association.
- 1:04:52Well, I volunteer to get a Hawaii and set one up know what
- 1:04:58Just imagine the cost to go to the conventions.
- 1:05:29To get around the island thought Southwest which I thought was
- 1:05:32kind of interesting. But yeah, they had that incident
- 1:05:35with the Aloha Airlines 737 where the whole roof came off.
- 1:05:39Yeah, yeah. Big chunk of the roof came off.
- 1:05:42Yet remember that? I have an alibi for that day?
- 1:05:46Yeah, I'm sure you did. But I was too young.
- 1:05:48That's what the 737 was built for, though was so short, haul
- 1:05:51short Hops, and lights and and Southwest is the largest owner
- 1:05:57of Evans in the world. So to have them take over the
- 1:06:02short haul flights down in Hawaii's probably beneficial
- 1:06:05because they have all the tools and equipment and knowledge to
- 1:06:08deal with 737. Is it is but we're getting off
- 1:06:11track here, right? Like so our smallest District in
- 1:06:17the state as 47 members with eight votes, and the largest is
- 1:06:22427 members with 72 votes and I apologize I have three hundred,
- 1:06:28forty eight members Ricky eight bucks this year.
- 1:06:30So yeah it's one of the things we've been always pushing on
- 1:06:34this podcast is participate, get involved, get with your union,
- 1:06:39go to, your county meetings, get involved, run for delegate, go
- 1:06:43to your State Convention because there's so much information, not
- 1:06:47only at those meetings but you also some of them have boosters
- 1:06:51your spring booster, your fall booster, things like that, where
- 1:06:53you can get information, and it's valuable information for
- 1:06:58Cyril, carrier, most most of it is, you know, the union is big
- 1:07:04on dues-paying members being involved in things like that.
- 1:07:08But non dues-paying members can be observers as well in these
- 1:07:13conventions. They can't speak unless they get
- 1:07:17somebody to suspend the rules for them, but you can go and
- 1:07:21learn education is the most important part.
- 1:07:24Absolutely. And, you know, it going as a
- 1:07:28non-delegable, I think you get the kind of take the whole thing
- 1:07:31in a little bit differently than you are as a delegate.
- 1:07:34But just to be able to watch and see everything and, you know,
- 1:07:39and not only like James said, having somebody get up there in
- 1:07:42a suspend, the rules to let you speak.
- 1:07:44But and if you're not comfortable going to a mic, you
- 1:07:46can always find a delicate that would be willing to speak on
- 1:07:49your behalf as well. When I when I did it last year
- 1:07:53and I was a non delegate, that was the two options, I had to
- 1:07:55pass my resolution was to either get somebody to Suspend the
- 1:07:59rules or convince somebody to be willing to stand up and talk
- 1:08:03about it. Now considering that a national
- 1:08:06somebody did stand up and talk about it for me because I was
- 1:08:09not able to go I probably could have done that option but that's
- 1:08:14on the table as well because I know if you're at my State
- 1:08:19Convention you can come to me with something and I'll help you
- 1:08:24with it no problem because that's what we're here for.
- 1:08:27We want We want people to step up and be like, I want to see
- 1:08:32this happen in this Union because your voice is the union.
- 1:08:36Just as much as it's, my voice, just as much as if anybody's on
- 1:08:39this podcast voice, your voice matters, just as much as mine
- 1:08:43and all you need to do is apply yourself to this.
- 1:08:48Come participate, get involved. See how it goes.
- 1:08:52And who knows? Maybe you'll like it and run for
- 1:08:54delegate next time. Absolutely.
- 1:08:56You know, it's having us. Especially with national.
- 1:08:59That's our next big. One here in a month and a half
- 1:09:03is a National Convention. James did make delegates.
- 1:09:07I am not a delicate. Currently, I have to wait for a
- 1:09:10dozen people or so to say that they're not going in order for
- 1:09:14me to make delegate, but that's not going to stop me from going.
- 1:09:17Obviously, I wasn't a delegate last year to Orlando either.
- 1:09:20I was a delegate, however, in Grapevine in 2019 so you know
- 1:09:25anything can happen but yeah, just being able to To take it in
- 1:09:30and see the process. I definitely recommend going,
- 1:09:34even if you don't want to go as a delegate or can't go as a
- 1:09:36delegate and if you can afford to go, yes, because that's where
- 1:09:41roommates come in handy because especially I'm working on
- 1:09:47figuring that out. I do have a roommate for this
- 1:09:52year. Same person, I Room do for
- 1:09:53state. So we made our plans for for
- 1:09:56national And yeah, and I think I was already starting plans for
- 1:10:01National for next year as well. It did definitely get involved
- 1:10:04if it even if you know, it's only one day that you can go,
- 1:10:08you can still get so much information on that one day that
- 1:10:12you'll just and you can talk to people too and you can get
- 1:10:14further information you know it break times lunch times
- 1:10:18afterwards in the morning before it officially starts.
- 1:10:22I mean there's just so much information that one can get
- 1:10:26even if it's just Just one or, you know, one or two days at
- 1:10:30National even or one day, your State Convention and if you can
- 1:10:33go to your board meetings to observe, I highly recommend
- 1:10:37doing that because that gives you a whole nother perspective
- 1:10:40on how things are ran behind the scenes.
- 1:10:43Yeah, I know a State Convention people were starting to gather
- 1:10:46around at the doors around 6:00 in the morning sitting down in
- 1:10:49the chairs talking with each other going over the paperwork
- 1:10:53and stuff like that. And you can literally walk up to
- 1:10:56anybody. At your convention and start
- 1:10:59talking with them about this stuff and they're, I have not
- 1:11:03met a single person at my convention.
- 1:11:06At least that didn't want to take the time to discuss this
- 1:11:10stuff with other people, whether you were a delegate or non
- 1:11:13delegate, it didn't matter to them.
- 1:11:15They all wanted you to bounce, ideas off each other and learn
- 1:11:19from each other, and understand how it all goes together as a
- 1:11:23group. And that's the whole point of a
- 1:11:25union is for Buddy to get together and basically get on
- 1:11:30the same page. So that way our Collective voice
- 1:11:34is a lot stronger than a single voice.
- 1:11:37Alright guys. So I think we're going to wind
- 1:11:38it down here. We're going on an hour and a
- 1:11:40half-ish. No, Mike.
- 1:11:44Your your last elements for the night?
- 1:11:48This peanut, folks just we were talking before the show about
- 1:11:55training a new sub and Adele. We just, you know, if you've
- 1:12:00been at this for a long time, you know, the, you know, the
- 1:12:03steps you need to do to keep yourself safe out there.
- 1:12:07Drink water, Frozen water bottles or cooling towels.
- 1:12:11Just, just don't let the Heat beat you because I just saw not
- 1:12:15not too long ago that we lost another carrier in the heat down
- 1:12:20in Texas. So folks take care of yourselves
- 1:12:24and do the things. You know, you have to do to beat
- 1:12:26the Heat. Josh, this is going to be a
- 1:12:28short week. It'll be like Hugh Mondays
- 1:12:31because the holidays on Tuesday, but just take it in stride.
- 1:12:35Try not to get overwhelmed, you do take a step back, take a deep
- 1:12:39breath and step back in there. Have a good week and be safe.
- 1:12:43James. Yeah, like we said before the
- 1:12:46heat is going to be no joke and it's here to stay for the summer
- 1:12:50and it doesn't matter how long it takes you if you need to
- 1:12:56seek. Air conditioning specially
- 1:12:59people in Lov the specially rural carriers in Eloise or
- 1:13:03people who have delivery vehicles that don't have air
- 1:13:06conditioning, stop somewhere, get into some AC.
- 1:13:09Get in the shade cool yourself off because last year I actually
- 1:13:14got heat sickness in an LLB and I was down for two days
- 1:13:18afterwards sick and it's no joke and your body never actually
- 1:13:24recover from that. I'm still more affected by heat.
- 1:13:27Eat now than I was before after being sick from it.
- 1:13:31So take care of yourself, take care of your body.
- 1:13:34And I know Management's going to get upset at you for having
- 1:13:39stationary events, if you're cooling off, but your safety is
- 1:13:45more important than their computer program.
- 1:13:48So be safe, be smart, take care of yourself, take care of your
- 1:13:52body because it's the only one you got and make sure you take
- 1:13:56your time. Do it right?
- 1:13:58And stay cool out there. Well as a public service
- 1:14:01announcement, ladies and gentlemen, when you're going to
- 1:14:03have extreme heat, you need to start drinking as soon as you
- 1:14:08get up. By the time you realize that
- 1:14:11you're having problems with the heat your body cannot process,
- 1:14:15the water you're putting in, at that time, you have to build up
- 1:14:18your defenses before you go outside.
- 1:14:21So please drink before you're exposed to the Heat.
- 1:14:24This is years and years of experience as an EMT trust me.
- 1:14:28People think that you can sit there and chug fluids.
- 1:14:32It does no good. It's already affected you to the
- 1:14:34point where you're not going to be able to able to operate
- 1:14:39Efficiently in that heat. So do me a favor, start drinking
- 1:14:43in the morning, get the fluids into your system.
- 1:14:46That's how you see how you build up your ability to sweat or
- 1:14:49Spire, which is your way of dealing with the heat, okay?
- 1:14:53My time you realize that you're not perspiring and you're
- 1:14:56feeling faint, it's a little later.
- 1:14:58Okay, go out there, do the best you can like James says, don't
- 1:15:02worry about the computer, the nodules kicking off that you're
- 1:15:06standing idle somewhere, take care of Cells because you are
- 1:15:11the most important delivery of the day.
- 1:15:13Get home to your families. Okay.
- 1:15:15Do a good job. Be safe.
- 1:15:17Protect yourself. Yes.
- 1:15:19Thank you Bill. I was just in say with what bill
- 1:15:23was saying about starting to drink in the morning, first
- 1:15:26thing in the morning, they actually tell us here to start
- 1:15:30drinking the night before so it'll be, you know, it'll
- 1:15:33already be in your system and you're already starting to be
- 1:15:36hydrated. I drink every night.
- 1:15:38Yes. Well oh.
- 1:15:39Water water is clear liquids. Clear liquids 99 alcoholic.
- 1:15:48Yeah no chemicals and avoid sugary drinks and carbonation.
- 1:15:55Yes we all just ran a Minecraft. No but now serious guys.
- 1:16:00It is July. A lot of us drive those tin cans
- 1:16:05on Wheels and Easy-Bake Ovens whatever else you want to call.
- 1:16:09Yeah, I was actually the one that was talking about that
- 1:16:12before and I've starting to train a new RCA on Wednesday and
- 1:16:18looking at my whether it is supposed to be 87 degrees and
- 1:16:20I'll be riding in the jump seat. I will be prepared.
- 1:16:24I'm actually drinking my fluids now my water, thank you.
- 1:16:28No alcohol for me tonight, is it supposed to be in the high 70s
- 1:16:33tomorrow but I'll be on that big route.
- 1:16:35So hydration is the key. I want everybody to stay safe.
- 1:16:39Yeah definitely out there. I you know it with the heat you
- 1:16:42know of my newer RCA's is. I mean I'm not a small person by
- 1:16:46any means that those who have met me, my other RCA that is
- 1:16:51just doing. Absolutely awesome.
- 1:16:52Is, is on the larger side and that's I'm always constantly
- 1:16:58checking out him management, went out and checked on him the
- 1:17:00other day to make sure. You know, here took him out a
- 1:17:02cold bottle of water and ice liked, I just told him I see.
- 1:17:06No, just make sure you stay hydrated when I went took part
- 1:17:09off. Out off of him.
- 1:17:10I said you need a Gatorade or water.
- 1:17:12I have both. He's like now I got I got like
- 1:17:15he had like four bottles of water and for smaller bottles of
- 1:17:18Gatorade and you know, he was having to stop intermittently
- 1:17:22just to get out of the truck and cool off because it was cooler
- 1:17:25outside as we all know. So yeah, I definitely set time
- 1:17:29of year people, you know, stay safe, stay hydrated, cooling
- 1:17:33towels. If you have a cooling apparatus
- 1:17:36that you can take with you and your truck.
- 1:17:38Don't forget those Oh, I know. I'm going to go throw some
- 1:17:41bottles of water in the freezer here when I get off here
- 1:17:43tonight. So on that note, stay safe.
- 1:17:46Everybody have a good week. Have a happy safe, Fourth of
- 1:17:49July, we don't need anybody. Losing any appendages, lighting
- 1:17:53off fireworks there would throw he ha there.
- 1:17:59I can tell you, there was an incident, several years ago in
- 1:18:02northern Michigan. Where somebody went to light a
- 1:18:05firework off, it didn't go off, they went and stood over it.
- 1:18:09It, it went off and yes, they lost part of their manhood.
- 1:18:15So on that note, stay safe everybody.
- 1:18:20Stay hydrated. See, cooler temperatures, if
- 1:18:24possible and don't stand over fireworks, if they're not going
- 1:18:28off properly, and we will be back next week.
