- 0:36SPEAKER_01: Hey guys, so this is gonna be a short commentary.
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: Um, I just wanted to pop in and make a point, and I really wanted to follow up because I wrote an article just last week about canceling celebrity skincare, and I really stand behind that article, and then I did a follow-up article.
- 0:53SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, really just focusing on Brad Pitt's new line, and instead of I didn't attack him, but instead I offered you guys 10 amazing brands that are doing skincare right, and they are very, very appealing to every single person, regardless of gender, regardless of age, demographic.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: It's a wonderful um, you know, collection of brands that I listed there.
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: So the reason I did that is because I have been, you know, getting so much great feedback from people I really admire in this industry.
- 1:26SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, Elise Taven is one of the most iconic editors of this industry, of the beauty industry.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: She made a wonderful TikTok about this, and she's absolutely right, along with all of the brand founders that are um, you know, in the new beauty independent articles that have written a letter to Brad Pitt saying this is not your space, dude.
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: Like this is not your your thing, and I completely get it.
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: You know, from a business perspective, I understand that people may be thinking about this as oh, they're just trying to, you know, cancel celebrities out, there's space here for everybody.
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: And I'm sorry, but that's just not the case with the skincare industry.
- 2:05SPEAKER_01: Um, we are already dealing with so many brands.
- 2:10SPEAKER_01: I mean, you guys hear it every day here at Skincare Anarchy.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: I'm always interviewing new brands, and every brand I invite on is curated.
- 2:19SPEAKER_01: So even with that curation, even with that filtering of just bringing you guys the best of the best, we still have so many options, which is great.
- 2:29SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 2:31SPEAKER_01: But at the same time, not only are we not able to fully support these amazing new brands that are emerging from entrepreneurs who actually have struggled with skin health issues and they've created solutions, we can't support them as is because there's this like you know craze around celebrity skincare or someone within a platform comes out with a skincare line or affiliates themselves, and it's like you know, we need to just stop.
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: We need to stop for a minute and think like, what are we putting our dollars?
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: How are we voting with our dollars?
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: And um, you know, if you're somebody who really cares about your skin health and you really do look at the skin as an organ rather than you know just another thing that's part of a trend or you know, whatever, then I think you will understand what I mean.
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: Now, scientifically speaking, which is really where I wanted to chime in mostly, this makes no sense.
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: I read into the what the the science of what Brad's line is doing, and from what I can tell, there's this um pro-GR3 complex.
- 3:36SPEAKER_01: Um, I'm gonna guess there's no information really disclosed about it, but I'm guessing it's a pro um growth receptor activator, um, which I'm guessing, I'm not saying that's what it is, but that's what scientific notation would allow one to assume.
- 3:55SPEAKER_01: Um that to me, first of all, like I can tell you like off the bat, that makes no sense.
- 4:01SPEAKER_01: So the scientist who's actually behind this line, I would like you to really, I would I challenge you to get on a mic, come on to my show, come on anywhere, you know, no attacks at all, but I just want to understand like what is the science, and is it really something that's innovative?
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: Is it really something we don't already have in this space?
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: Because I've interviewed so many amazing brands already, and they are really working on this very complex level of understanding the skin, you know, molecularly, signaling pathways, all this amazing, amazing stuff that's really changing the way that we approach aesthetic um, you know, routines.
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: And so I really do have a lot of question marks around this, you know, not only obviously from the business standpoint, for but from the science standpoint, you know, there is this thing called redundancy in science.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: You know, when you come out with things that are based off hypotheses and very little data surrounding them that is actually applicable to in vivo um models, it's very difficult for any scientist, any doctor, anybody with any relevance to stand behind you because data that is generated very quickly and might show some you know outliers that are trying that you're utilizing in a statistical model to show something being relevant, that's a problem.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: And I see a lot of people doing that, and I know for a fact a lot of celebrity brands have done that in the past, and that is why I'm against most celebrity skincare.
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: I have hosted a few, very select few brands that I really enjoyed, but those brands were actually just endorsed by a celebrity, they're not really um, you know, like for example, Victoria Beckham did it beautifully.
- 5:55SPEAKER_01: She is such a great example of a celebrity brand done right.
- 5:59SPEAKER_01: Victoria went to Professor Augustine Spoter and asked him for his expertise.
- 6:05SPEAKER_01: She did not pretend like she knew what she was talking about, she did not act like she knew, you know, everything about science of skin.
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: No, she went to an expert, she went to a man who has dedicated his life to understanding burn injury and has his own skincare line that is phenomenal, that is efficacious, that has data, and that's how you do it.
- 6:26SPEAKER_01: Brad did not do that.
- 6:27SPEAKER_01: The guy he went to is a just another PhD, he's another person, a scientist who just happens to be finding, you know, certain types of data points that are not exactly, you know, repeatable data.
- 6:40SPEAKER_01: Okay, I'm sorry, but it's the truth.
- 6:43SPEAKER_01: So, long story short, here is this.
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: One, I'm against it from a business standpoint because you're taking money away from brands that are deserving of support.
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: Um, I recently have interviewed so many amazing, what you would call indie brands, but I call them indie luxury brands because their quality is off the charts good, and they are not selling products for$250, they're selling stuff for reasonable prices and maintaining a business.
- 7:12SPEAKER_01: I have so much respect for those entrepreneurs, it's it's crazy.
- 7:16SPEAKER_01: So, from one, from a business standpoint, absolutely not.
- 7:19SPEAKER_01: You celebrities, you guys make enough money as is, get out of here.
- 7:22SPEAKER_01: We don't need you.
- 7:23SPEAKER_01: You you need to stop, you know, stop with this, like, you know, just the greed.
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: It's greedy.
- 7:29SPEAKER_01: It's greedy is what it is, and it's petty, and it's it's uh in my opinion, it's tacky.
- 7:34SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 7:34SPEAKER_01: Two, from the business standpoint, um, this is unethical.
- 7:40SPEAKER_01: You're propagating the the expenditure of people's funds on unnecessary uh products that are redundant, and you're doing it in an economy that has is dealing with inflation.
- 7:54SPEAKER_01: Okay, it's people are really struggling right now, and it's very hard for us to pick and choose the self-care options that we can't live without or that make us feel better during the stress, the daily stress of our lives.
- 8:09SPEAKER_01: So for you to be exploiting consumers, um, and you know, taking for granted how much money$250 really is, that's a week's worth of groceries for a lot of people.
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: Okay, for me, for all a lot of us, that's wrong.
- 8:27SPEAKER_01: There's absolutely no reason a celebrity care brand, a celebrity skincare brand should be priced that high.
- 8:35SPEAKER_01: If anything, Brad, you should be doing this almost for like way cheaper than most skincare if you're actually doing this for the right reasons.
- 8:45SPEAKER_01: You know why?
- 8:46SPEAKER_01: Because you're representing a men a demographic of consumers which are men who are not young and you know into skincare, so they're not Gen Z, they're grown men who have been, you know, brainwashed or just I guess conditioned to believe that even wearing something like sunscreen is considered girly or it's feminine and it's not, and it's like we as an industry are trying to condition that out of them.
- 9:14SPEAKER_01: And for you to come out with a brand that is complete BS and then just target those consumers, which you know you're doing from the packaging to your image to your influence, it's absolutely unethical.
- 9:27SPEAKER_01: I do not understand why he would be doing this.
- 9:29SPEAKER_01: I have a lot of respect for Brad Pitt.
- 9:31SPEAKER_01: Do not get this twisted.
- 9:32SPEAKER_01: He's one of my favorite actors of all time, he is phenomenal at what he does, he knows how to put himself into any role.
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: I just I adore him as an actor.
- 9:44SPEAKER_01: But do I believe in the necessity of him to monetize on in this specific category and industry?
- 9:52SPEAKER_01: No, absolutely not, absolutely not.
- 9:54SPEAKER_01: Now, the third point, science.
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: I just explained to you scientifically, it makes no freaking sense.
- 9:58SPEAKER_01: Okay, there's no need for this.
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: We already have a lot of waste, we already are dealing with the clean beauty dilemma where we're trying to unclutter that space, we're already dealing with the natural and organic dilemma, we're trying to unclutter that, then there's sustainability on top of that.
- 10:13SPEAKER_01: I just published an article about nanoparticles being utilized in skincare products or makeup products, and it's a real problem.
- 10:20SPEAKER_01: And there are brands that are actually working towards finding solutions from a formulation perspective to this problem.
- 10:27SPEAKER_01: And Brad, your line is not helping, it's just adding to the problem, okay?
- 10:32SPEAKER_01: I would say this to you if you were just a normal consumer or sorry, a normal entrepreneur.
- 10:38SPEAKER_01: If you're not doing something innovative, you don't need to be in the space of skincare specifically.
- 10:44SPEAKER_01: There is no need because we're at a point right now for in this industry where there needs to be a shift that occurs, and the shift has to be towards science.
- 10:53SPEAKER_01: It cannot be towards trends, and it cannot be towards what's hyped up or um, you know, just propagated on large platforms to mass audiences.
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: There's a lot of young consumers out there that are still very naive when it comes to understanding the science.
- 11:09SPEAKER_01: They haven't taken a biology one-on-one class yet, they haven't gone to college yet, they haven't studied this stuff yet, and you are exploiting that consumer base, and you have to see it for what it is.
- 11:21SPEAKER_01: That's not me pointing a finger at anybody, it's just the truth of it.
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: Also, I want to say, how many editors are out there that know what they're talking about and they've been doing this for a living for decades, which is you know, really uh curating and understanding beauty brands, skincare brands, um, you know, and figuring out what is good and what's not good, and what's worth people's money and what's not worth people's money.
- 11:48SPEAKER_01: You know, don't listen to me.
- 11:50SPEAKER_01: Listen to them.
- 11:50SPEAKER_01: They've got decades of experience.
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: I mean, you are basically taking a giant, like, you know, for lack of a better term, shit on all of the efforts they've done their whole career to curate the beauty industry.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: It's absolute nonsense.
- 12:04SPEAKER_01: But this this is it's just not wanted.
- 12:06SPEAKER_01: It's not needed and it's not wanted.
- 12:08SPEAKER_01: And that's really my point.
- 12:09SPEAKER_01: And it's not, I'm not trying to be aggressive, I'm just trying to be honest and candid with you guys.
- 12:13SPEAKER_01: Like always, I don't believe in hype, I don't believe in trends.
- 12:17SPEAKER_01: I even Sir John said it when he came onto our show.
- 12:20SPEAKER_01: He said, you know, the the new trend is to not be a trend, it's to be you, and he's so right when he says that.
- 12:28SPEAKER_01: You know, I don't think this is the time for us to put more into the space.
- 12:36SPEAKER_01: I think this is a time for us to really sit down as an industry and as professionals and understand where we are and where our consumers are in relation to where we are, and merge perspectives and clarify perspectives.
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: And so, with that in mind, I really urge all of you take a stand.
- 12:57SPEAKER_01: Make take some, you know, take some time and comment on posts that are about this topic, you know, voice your opinion, get the word out there.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: If you know a person that's like really hyped up about, you know, some fluff brand, doesn't even have to be a celebrity brand, if it's a brand that just doesn't make any sense, say something, you know, tell them, be like, hey, you know, you might want to check out this commentary or this piece, or you know, recommend Goody Independence article, recommend my article, recommend Elise Tabin's TikTok.
- 13:23SPEAKER_01: You know, there's so many professionals out there that are um getting the word out, you know, and I think it's really important for us to listen to them.
- 13:31SPEAKER_01: So thank you guys for tuning in as always.
