Latest / DEEP INSIGHT / 'This is overt' Fmr. FBI official blasts Trump admin's raid on Rep. Ilhan Omar's home
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: First, I should say that the things that they are
- 0:02Speaker 1: alleging about Congresswoman Ilhan Omar are a lie. Like there's
- 0:06Speaker 1: no evidence that she has married her.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Like, it's crazy.
- 0:09Speaker 1: It's insane that I'm about to have to explain it
- 0:10Speaker 1: to people. But what I want people to hear is
- 0:13Speaker 1: that they've been telling Ilhan Omar to get out of
- 0:15Speaker 1: this country for a very long time. You know, I
- 0:19Speaker 1: think that this all goes back to denaturalization.
- 0:23Speaker 2: And I remember when we were sitting at.
- 0:24Speaker 1: This table, Olivia Troy was here, and she talked to
- 0:26Speaker 1: us about how in the first Trump administration, denaturalization is
- 0:29Speaker 1: something that Stephen Miller talked about a lot. And they
- 0:32Speaker 1: weren't able to denaturalize a lot of people in that
- 0:34Speaker 1: first Trump administration, because you know what? It takes a
- 0:36Speaker 1: lot of lawyers, a lot of people willing to toe
- 0:38Speaker 1: the line.
- 0:39Speaker 2: But now.
- 0:40Speaker 1: You've got a judge somewhere that had signed a warrant
- 0:44Speaker 1: for them to go and raid this woman's home. Like,
- 0:49Speaker 1: I am concerned because if they can do it to
- 0:52Speaker 1: Ilhan Omar, if they are successful here, what's to stop
- 0:56Speaker 1: them anywhere else?
- 0:58Speaker 2: Well, let's be clear.
- 0:58Speaker 3: This is far from the first time that the Trump
- 1:01Speaker 3: administration has had DOJ violate its own policies and norms
- 1:07Speaker 3: in order to.
- 1:07Speaker 4: Go after a political adversary.
- 1:09Speaker 3: So it's not just a question of can it happen
- 1:12Speaker 3: to Representative Omar? Can it happen to Jim Comey? Can
- 1:15Speaker 3: it happen to Letitia James? Can it happen to Don Lemon?
- 1:18Speaker 3: Can it happen to the Broadview.
- 1:19Speaker 4: Six, which also included congressional candidates?
- 1:23Speaker 3: This should not surprise us. It should still disgust us.
- 1:28Speaker 3: But the time for shock is over. And the time
- 1:31Speaker 3: to actually start fighting back is what should occur. And
- 1:34Speaker 3: I really, really hope that when this nightmare ends, there
- 1:39Speaker 3: will be some accounting and reckoning, some sort of ramification happening.
- 1:44Speaker 3: for the law enforcement officials and the DOJ attorneys who
- 1:47Speaker 3: are allowing this madness to happen. Put aside whether Representative
- 1:52Speaker 3: Omar has done anything, DOJ was willing to break one
- 1:57Speaker 3: of its most sacred norms about not taking prosecutorial or
- 2:02Speaker 3: investigative action in public within 90 days of an election.
- 2:06Speaker 3: You know what administration strengthened that norm more than any other?
- 2:11Speaker 3: the first Trump one under William Barr, who felt they
- 2:14Speaker 3: had been mistreated by how the FBI examined the Russia cases.
- 2:17Speaker 5: Well, so let's put an exclamation point on that and
- 2:22Speaker 5: read from the unwritten 60-day rule from June of 2018.
- 2:27Speaker 5: Prosecutors avoid public disclosure of investigative steps related to electoral
- 2:32Speaker 5: matters or the return of indictments against a candidate for
- 2:35Speaker 5: office within 60 days of a primary or general election.
- 2:38Speaker 5: The 60-day rule is not written or described in any
- 2:41Speaker 5: department policy or regulation. Nevertheless, high-ranking department and FBI officials
- 2:46Speaker 5: acknowledge the existence of a general practice that informs department decisions.
- 2:50Speaker 5: And then this is from the DOJ Inspector General report during,
- 2:54Speaker 5: as you just rightly noted, the Trump first term. Here's
- 2:58Speaker 5: the thing that strikes me about this. Here's another woman
- 3:03Speaker 5: of color who is a target of.
- 3:07Speaker 2: This man, the president.
- 3:10Speaker 5: And we all know and have seen he seems to
- 3:13Speaker 5: have a problem with women of color.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Who have titles and responsibilities.
- 3:20Speaker 5: I just want to give you some recent headlines on
- 3:23Speaker 5: his attacks on powerful women of color. MSNOW today, Representative
- 3:30Speaker 5: Ilhan Omar says she will not be silenced after federal
- 3:34Speaker 5: agents search her home. October 9th, from New York Times,
- 3:37Speaker 5: Trump announces White House inquiry into Fed Governor Cook. People,
- 3:43Speaker 5: October 10th, Donald Trump calls New York Attorney General Letitia
- 3:46Speaker 5: James disgusting at a dog following her appointment to Cornell
- 3:51Speaker 5: rape case. The Griot, October 9th, LaMonica McIver takes ICE
- 3:57Speaker 5: oversight case to full appeals court.
- 3:59Speaker 2: I will fight like hell.
- 4:01Speaker 5: These women pissed Donald Trump off because he can't control them.
- 4:06Speaker 2: He's not like the white Republican men around him.
- 4:09Speaker 5: Who bend over backwards to do his bidding and give
- 4:12Speaker 5: him what he wants. These are women who have integrity
- 4:16Speaker 5: and dignity. So we have to understand and contextualize, I think.
- 4:20Speaker 2: What this is versus what it isn't.
- 4:23Speaker 5: This is not some legitimate legal proceeding, which, to your point,
- 4:26Speaker 5: I think on the back end of this, all these
- 4:28Speaker 5: DOJ lawyers are bringing this stuff.
- 4:30Speaker 2: We're going to have a very ugly time. in local
- 4:32Speaker 2: bars and in federal bars. How do you see.
- 4:36Speaker 5: That piece of it, though, that this targeting really sort
- 4:40Speaker 5: of says something very specific about the women in Trump's
- 4:45Speaker 5: crosshairs when you go back and look at the black
- 4:48Speaker 5: journalists who've been called pigs and other names now to
- 4:53Speaker 5: women who have real power and authority as government officials?
- 4:58Speaker 3: I don't think at this point in his second administration,
- 5:02Speaker 3: we need to code it.
- 5:03Speaker 4: As subtext or a dog whistle. This is overt.
- 5:09Speaker 3: There is a project by this administration, not just if
- 5:13Speaker 3: you look at the statements cabinet officials make, but if
- 5:17Speaker 3: you look at the quote, supposed philosophers they admire, if
- 5:21Speaker 3: you look at the think tanks they've listened to, there
- 5:25Speaker 3: is an actual organized effort to make this into solely
- 5:29Speaker 3: a white Christian country. And, you know, this sort of
- 5:34Speaker 3: gets at what you were saying before with denaturalization.
- 5:37Speaker 4: Let's be clear.
- 5:39Speaker 3: When they're talking about heritage Americans who've been here for
- 5:43Speaker 3: hundreds of years, there are a lot of people who
- 5:46Speaker 3: are forcibly living in the South during that era that
- 5:48Speaker 3: they do not consider heritage Americans. You know, they're not
- 5:52Speaker 3: talking about slaves or the descendants of slaves. They're not
- 5:55Speaker 3: talking about the descendants of Native Americans. They're talking about
- 5:59Speaker 3: people who look like them, and they're upset because now the.
- 6:03Speaker 4: Country belongs to everybody.
- 6:05Speaker 3: And they feel a resentment that they've been kicked out
- 6:08Speaker 3: of power and somehow made less important.
- 6:11Speaker 4: And instead of celebrating the fact that this is a country.
- 6:15Speaker 3: that actually try to enact the up from your bootstraps,
- 6:18Speaker 3: anybody can be a king mentality.
- 6:22Speaker 4: They've decided to turn it around.
- 6:25Speaker 3: And say that's not what America is about.
- 6:26Speaker 4: America is about inherited class status.
- 6:29Speaker 6: They've often been fearful of a multicultural democracy. That is
- 6:33Speaker 6: something that is just the, it's antithetical to how they think.
- 6:36Speaker 6: And it's scary for them on so many different reasons.
- 6:39Speaker 6: And to your point, I agree with you. I think
- 6:40Speaker 6: that is the best example of the American experiment. The
- 6:43Speaker 6: one that I take the most pride in personally is
- 6:45Speaker 6: that we're trying to do something here, the multicultural democracy
- 6:48Speaker 6: that the world has not seen in its history. This
- 6:50Speaker 6: is still very much a new thing. And they are
- 6:53Speaker 6: so much just relegated to the backwards past. Real quickly,
- 6:57Speaker 6: while I have you. That's why I think there's a
- 6:59Speaker 6: lot of politics here with Omar. She is always on
- 7:03Speaker 6: all the right-wing media and in the echo chamber, so
- 7:05Speaker 6: they want to do this to rally up the base
- 7:06Speaker 6: a little bit.
- 7:07Speaker 2: But real quickly, they.
- 7:08Speaker 6: Have not had a lot of success going down this
- 7:10Speaker 6: rabbit hole of conspiracy theories. A lot of lawyers, even
- 7:13Speaker 6: ones who are conservative, have looked at a lot of
- 7:15Speaker 6: these cases the Trump administration has been pushing and been like,
- 7:18Speaker 6: there's no there there. It's our guy Joe, the Italian
- 7:21Speaker 6: last name, I forget his name.
- 7:21Speaker 2: He quit. He quit, right?
- 7:24Speaker 4: There's no there there.
- 7:26Speaker 6: And I think that's something to be said when you
- 7:28Speaker 6: have people who are very much comfortable in the MAGA
- 7:30Speaker 6: orbit saying there's nothing here.
- 7:32Speaker 2: We've got nothing to do.
- 7:34Speaker 3: Yeah, look, at a certain point, it's one thing to
- 7:37Speaker 3: spin conspiracy theories around. on podcasts or on far-right news
- 7:43Speaker 3: channels or on Truth Social. But at a certain point,
- 7:47Speaker 3: if you're trying to take away somebody's liberty, if you're
- 7:49Speaker 3: actually trying to take away somebody's freedom and throw them
- 7:52Speaker 3: in jail, you need to be able to convince a
- 7:54Speaker 3: grand jury you know what you're doing. You need to
- 7:57Speaker 3: be able to convince a judge that your claims have
- 8:00Speaker 3: some merit. And you need to be able to convince
- 8:03Speaker 3: a jury of the defendant's peers that what you're saying
- 8:07Speaker 3: isn't nonsense. And the fact is, all these cases they're
- 8:11Speaker 3: bringing against their enemies, particularly the one in the Southern
- 8:15Speaker 3: District of Florida, alleging some sort.
- 8:17Speaker 4: Of grand conspiracy to keep.
- 8:19Speaker 3: Trump out of office from the Russia investigations up through
- 8:23Speaker 3: Jack Smith's investigations. There is no factual predication to justify
- 8:28Speaker 3: any of these. And that's why not only are they
- 8:31Speaker 3: losing the cases they're bringing, they're losing the attorneys and
- 8:35Speaker 3: investigators who are staffing them.
- 8:37Speaker 2: Hey, it's Rachel.
- 8:38Speaker 7: I am so glad to see you at the end
