- 0:27But first,
- 0:28I want to thank you for tuning in.
- 0:29We can't do any of this without you.
- 0:31So whether you're listening
- 0:32or watching, please keep tuning in
- 0:34because that helps us
- 0:35continue to do what we do.
- 0:36So without further ado,
- 0:38let me introduce Aimee.
- 0:40Hi, Megan, thanks so much.
- 0:41It's a pleasure to be here today.
- 0:43Welcome, Aimee.
- 0:43I'm so excited to have you.
- 0:45I love what friends do.
- 0:47I'm really excited
- 0:48to tell everybody about it,
- 0:49because I think that our community
- 0:50is going to really,
- 0:51really benefit from this.
- 0:53So first tell us what is what friends do.
- 0:56So, what friends do is an online, tool
- 1:01to allow friends
- 1:03and loved ones
- 1:04and family members
- 1:05to organize communication
- 1:08and support for someone
- 1:09going through any major life events.
- 1:11And we really tend to specialize
- 1:14in, people who are diagnosed with cancer,
- 1:17going through cancer treatments
- 1:19and that journey.
- 1:20So we've helped
- 1:21hundreds of thousands of people
- 1:23through events in life
- 1:25that they weren't necessarily
- 1:26expecting to have to go through.
- 1:28but really looking at ways to provide
- 1:31communication and provide
- 1:33actionable support.
- 1:35I can't wait to get into all those
- 1:36details with you.
- 1:37Oh that's amazing. I'm so excited.
- 1:38So is it
- 1:39is it just a website or an app
- 1:42or what's the platform?
- 1:43So the platform, for
- 1:46the general public is called
- 1:48What Friends do.com.
- 1:50And it is software
- 1:51that you can access from your tablet,
- 1:55your computer
- 1:56or your mobile device
- 1:57from any browser that you have.
- 2:00and it will interact
- 2:01seamlessly without any problems.
- 2:03Now, if you are a lucky person
- 2:05and you happen
- 2:06to, be at a facility
- 2:08that has one of our private
- 2:10branded, software applications,
- 2:12then you might also have the opportunity
- 2:14to use a mobile app,
- 2:15but you might not even know it's
- 2:16powered by what friends do.
- 2:18That's awesome.
- 2:19That's a lot of flexibility
- 2:20for everybody.
- 2:21So, And I should add
- 2:23that actually we have kind of done one
- 2:26weird new thing, just in the past month
- 2:29and as a tech company
- 2:30have kind of reversed and gone backwards
- 2:33and just launched a paper organizer
- 2:37to allow family and patients
- 2:41to write down
- 2:43all of their needs in one specific place.
- 2:46So it's kind of the opposite of an app.
- 2:49I actually love that
- 2:50because I am a paper person
- 2:51and I'm very visual.
- 2:52I want to see it on paper.
- 2:53So even when I put stuff
- 2:55in my calendar on my phone,
- 2:56I will write it in my planner
- 2:57because I need to see it.
- 2:58Well, that's what we have for you.
- 3:00It's perfect. So how did you start that?
- 3:03So we started this,
- 3:04I started it with my family
- 3:07because we had a loved one
- 3:09who was diagnosed
- 3:10with terminal brain cancer
- 3:11when she was 25.
- 3:13And we were those best friends.
- 3:15Kind of first line of defense
- 3:17going between
- 3:19the family
- 3:19who was at the hospital
- 3:21and sharing information with the masses,
- 3:24and what we found
- 3:26as we were going back and forth was that
- 3:29as we were sharing information
- 3:31and status updates on
- 3:32what was happening with our friend Laura,
- 3:34the response was always twofold.
- 3:36The first was, please tell the family
- 3:39that I love them
- 3:40and I'm thinking of them.
- 3:42And the second was always
- 3:44and let me know
- 3:44if there's anything I can do to help.
- 3:46And keeping track of the information
- 3:49was a little bit daunting,
- 3:51but more than that was when we found ways
- 3:55for friends to do something they would.
- 3:59They felt
- 4:00honored and privileged and more connected
- 4:03to the family
- 4:05that they had the opportunity
- 4:06to do something.
- 4:08And then the family felt loved
- 4:10and supported and connected
- 4:13with their entire community
- 4:14because they
- 4:15we provided a simple, you know,
- 4:17what would be great?
- 4:18Can someone drop off
- 4:19a basket of breakfast
- 4:20for the family
- 4:21while they're in the hospital?
- 4:23Can someone else drive to
- 4:24and from an appointment?
- 4:26Is someone else able
- 4:27to just take the dog on a walk?
- 4:29These are the things that can really be
- 4:32super beneficial to the family today,
- 4:34and not something
- 4:36that's going to be
- 4:37a burden to any friend.
- 4:38That is so important to too,
- 4:40because I feel like so many people,
- 4:42they either don't know what they need
- 4:44in the beginning especially,
- 4:45or if they need to help
- 4:47imposing by asking
- 4:48and they just don't know,
- 4:49like if it's okay to ask
- 4:50or if someone offers,
- 4:51they want to say yes,
- 4:52but then they feel like they're
- 4:54they can't say yes
- 4:54because we have to do it all ourselves.
- 4:56And thinking it through,
- 4:58especially as you are
- 5:00newly diagnosed with something
- 5:02and or there's been
- 5:03a change in your diagnosis
- 5:05or treatment plan, it's
- 5:07overwhelming, right?
- 5:08Like you
- 5:09are just doing everything you can
- 5:11to keep one foot in front of the other.
- 5:13And so having to on the spot
- 5:17come up with,
- 5:18oh yeah, I could use
- 5:19help with these things or,
- 5:21or sometimes you do come up
- 5:23with what those ideas are
- 5:24and you're like,
- 5:25I need something
- 5:25to take the trash out tomorrow
- 5:27because I can't seem to get the trash
- 5:29can out this week.
- 5:30You know?
- 5:31Yeah, it feels awkward.
- 5:32It feels awkward.
- 5:34How do you start that conversation?
- 5:37And, like,
- 5:38what about when you're thinking about it
- 5:39at three in the morning?
- 5:40Well, that's not
- 5:41when people are calling and saying,
- 5:42let me know what I can do.
- 5:44You can't say that you to feel weird
- 5:45sending a text at that hour, you know.
- 5:48Oh, absolutely.
- 5:49And then also, like,
- 5:50you know,
- 5:51are you adding a to do list
- 5:52by by telling them what do you need.
- 5:54Like now they have to sit down
- 5:55and make up a list.
- 5:56Like if you can just come in
- 5:57and say,
- 5:57hey, I'm going to
- 5:58I'm going to walk your dog this week
- 5:59because I know you have a dog
- 6:00and I'm sure it needs to be.
- 6:01Walked well,
- 6:02and then so as we're on the dog walking,
- 6:05I'm going to just throw myself
- 6:07under the bus for a second here.
- 6:09Love it.
- 6:10Please don't ever ask me to walk your dog
- 6:12like I love your dog.
- 6:14I promise I do,
- 6:15but I cannot handle
- 6:16picking up the dog poop
- 6:18and that is not my thing.
- 6:21Okay?
- 6:21But but there are a lot of other things
- 6:24that are my thing
- 6:25that I would love the opportunity
- 6:27to help with.
- 6:28And my son,
- 6:29or my sister, or tons of my friends.
- 6:32They're like, yeah,
- 6:33I would love to take the dog on the walk,
- 6:35but please don't ask me
- 6:36to go to the grocery for you.
- 6:38And please
- 6:38don't ask me to make you dinner.
- 6:40I was actually speaking with
- 6:41a woman earlier today
- 6:44and she is, a highly educated
- 6:47healthcare executive.
- 6:48Extraordinarily compassionate,
- 6:50totally overwhelmed
- 6:51because she's trying to help a friend
- 6:53go through a situation right now.
- 6:55And she's like,
- 6:56I don't know,
- 6:57everybody just expects me
- 6:59to take her dinner,
- 6:59but I can't even get dinner
- 7:00on the table myself
- 7:01because I hate cooking.
- 7:03Like that's not my thing.
- 7:04And I said,
- 7:05friend, like, you're an extraordinary
- 7:08financial whiz
- 7:09and you love the paperwork.
- 7:11What if you help her organize her finance
- 7:14and she lit up from the inside
- 7:17because that's her gift.
- 7:18And she was like,
- 7:19I would love to be able
- 7:20to go through and say,
- 7:22these are the bills that need to be paid.
- 7:23These are the ways that you need
- 7:25to follow up with insurance.
- 7:26These are the other forms of paperwork
- 7:28that need to happen.
- 7:29You would think that I asked her.
- 7:31I mean, she was so excited. It's amazing.
- 7:33And that is so true.
- 7:34Like you have to play
- 7:35to your strong points.
- 7:36What are you good at?
- 7:37What can you give
- 7:38that's going to be beneficial
- 7:39and not stress you out
- 7:41and deplete you at the same time?
- 7:42That's a huge part of it.
- 7:44Because you're also going to show up
- 7:46better for your friend. Absolutely.
- 7:48So if you, as the person going through
- 7:51it, are able to.
- 7:53So people think that bringing meals
- 7:55is the thing that you do. Right.
- 7:56And that's so important.
- 7:58We have to be nourished.
- 8:00And so I am not downplaying
- 8:02meals like that's
- 8:03always the number one thing.
- 8:04But if you can allow yourself to open up
- 8:07just a little bit to the other things
- 8:09that are overwhelming you in life,
- 8:11they might not overwhelm your friends.
- 8:13They might not overwhelm
- 8:15your friend who's a financial planner.
- 8:17Who for whom? This is super easy.
- 8:19Your friend for whom
- 8:21gardening is their passion,
- 8:23and they would love the opportunity
- 8:25to make sure that your yard is mowed
- 8:28in the summer or something else, like,
- 8:30there are a lot of things that,
- 8:33we sometimes forget
- 8:34and that when you're
- 8:35going through a major event in your life,
- 8:38you don't want everything else
- 8:40to have to fall by the wayside.
- 8:41But it usually does
- 8:43because you just don't have capacity.
- 8:45Yeah, absolutely.
- 8:46That's so important.
- 8:47And it's so hard to ask for help
- 8:49and to accept it.
- 8:50So I love that you guys do this.
- 8:52I think it's so important.
- 8:53Yes.
- 8:54Well, and the
- 8:55the who has a study that shows people
- 8:59who have stronger
- 9:00social support
- 9:00networks have better outcomes.
- 9:03And where this where I'm going with this
- 9:06is that, you're creating more connection
- 9:09when you're allowing people in
- 9:11and when you're allowing people
- 9:12to help support you.
- 9:13whether you want to admit it or not,
- 9:15you probably feel kind of good
- 9:17that someone cares about you
- 9:18and they're doing nice things for you,
- 9:20and it actually feels really good.
- 9:22There's a little dopamine hit
- 9:23when you do something nice
- 9:24for someone else, right?
- 9:26So we are taking care of,
- 9:29trying to help, like,
- 9:30round out that quality of care
- 9:33that you need that is essential
- 9:36when you're going through
- 9:37any kind of life event,
- 9:39specifically if you're talking about,
- 9:41you know, like an eye cancer diagnosis
- 9:43or something like that,
- 9:44your life is changing
- 9:46in a lot of ways, right?
- 9:47So, I mean, any.
- 9:49Inadequacy, a lot of the times
- 9:51they can't even come out of the bedroom
- 9:52for a couple of weeks
- 9:53because they can't be around light.
- 9:54So they are literally
- 9:56can't drive their kids somewhere
- 9:57they can't see.
- 9:58Like, you know, it's a huge, huge thing.
- 10:01It's a huge, huge thing.
- 10:03And knowing that people love you
- 10:05and care about you
- 10:06and want to help again,
- 10:07people want to help. They do.
- 10:09And one of the things that you said
- 10:11when we talked
- 10:11before that I loved was that, you know,
- 10:13when you don't let your friends help,
- 10:15they might be maybe
- 10:16a little offended of like, hey,
- 10:18I thought we were better friends.
- 10:19I thought you trusted me.
- 10:20And I think that's such an.
- 10:21Important way to look at it.
- 10:23Because you're not imposing,
- 10:25you're letting them do
- 10:26what they're wanting to do for you.
- 10:28And if you say no, you
- 10:29you might hurt their feelings
- 10:31a little bit, you know?
- 10:32And if you flip it
- 10:33and put you on that side
- 10:34and you want to help someone
- 10:35and they say, no, no, no, I got it.
- 10:37What?
- 10:38It's a little hurtful of, like, what?
- 10:39I thought you trusted me.
- 10:40I thought we were better friends.
- 10:42So I think that's a great look at it.
- 10:43It is.
- 10:44I very recently
- 10:46had someone going through something
- 10:48and I was like, wow.
- 10:49First of all,
- 10:50logically 100%
- 10:52understand how overwhelming it is.
- 10:54But as a human and as a friend,
- 10:56I was a little sad and hurt.
- 10:58Exactly what you said it right?
- 11:00Like please let me do something for you.
- 11:02Yeah.
- 11:03And I think people
- 11:03just don't think about it
- 11:05from that point of view. Right.
- 11:06And so we just kind of
- 11:08have to normalize that a little bit,
- 11:10which is hard.
- 11:11and it's so hard
- 11:12when you're already
- 11:13in such a vulnerable spot with your life
- 11:17being changed so dramatically.
- 11:20Absolutely. Totally agree.
- 11:21So when you started this,
- 11:23what kind of growing pains
- 11:24did you have getting this going?
- 11:27Like what did you need help with?
- 11:28Like what
- 11:28what was it like to launch
- 11:30something like this?
- 11:31Well, let's be clear.
- 11:32I had taken one coding class
- 11:34in seventh grade,
- 11:35so, I wasn't a I was not tech developer.
- 11:39so had to, really learn
- 11:42and trust developers.
- 11:44And the coding that was happening on me
- 11:46underneath side, I had to ask
- 11:49for guidance on the business side.
- 11:52Like how
- 11:53what's the real business
- 11:54model around this?
- 11:55Like,
- 11:55how are we going to get this
- 11:56in the hands of patients
- 11:58when they need it?
- 11:59and that was a huge growing pain for me.
- 12:02we launched
- 12:03as a B2C so business to consumer site.
- 12:06It's a very hard,
- 12:07very expensive to get out there.
- 12:09and it not
- 12:11it wasn't super financially stable
- 12:14and viable for a while
- 12:15and had to talk to a lot of experts
- 12:19and kind of change
- 12:20the business
- 12:21model around such that
- 12:22we sell this software to health care
- 12:26professionals and other providers
- 12:29who want an extension of their brand
- 12:31because they understand
- 12:33how important it is to have those extra
- 12:37services, available to their patients.
- 12:40But but that was a really big learning
- 12:42curve for me
- 12:43and had to ask a lot of people
- 12:44for help with all of that.
- 12:46I ended up
- 12:47being the first woman
- 12:48in my state to raise venture capital
- 12:50over a half $1 million,
- 12:52and I had no idea how to do that.
- 12:54So I had to learn a lot more.
- 12:56Well, thank you.
- 12:57but I had to learn a lot along the way
- 12:59about how that works.
- 13:00Can you. Imagine?
- 13:01Because you have this great idea, but,
- 13:03you know, it's
- 13:05just like we were talking about before.
- 13:06You can't be good at everything.
- 13:07So trying to learn
- 13:09how to be a business person
- 13:10and how to be a finance person
- 13:11when really your passion is this idea.
- 13:14Like, yeah, that's that's overwhelming.
- 13:16That's that's a big one.
- 13:17two years ago
- 13:19I decided to launch a podcast
- 13:22and I had no idea how to do that.
- 13:25and everyone's like, oh, it's so easy.
- 13:26You just get the stuff and go.
- 13:28And I was like,
- 13:28so Megan,
- 13:29you and I know that it's not really
- 13:31how easy it is to just launch,
- 13:32but you just
- 13:33you just record stuff
- 13:34and you put it out there that it's.
- 13:36Just not going to be.
- 13:37Let's talk. It'll be fine. Right.
- 13:39So I had to
- 13:40start asking people questions,
- 13:42start leaning on people
- 13:43who are already experts in the field.
- 13:45And I think that, the lessons
- 13:47that I have learned in building
- 13:50my business are actually lessons
- 13:52that I like
- 13:53to try to remind people about
- 13:54as they're going through
- 13:57whatever their healthcare
- 13:58or major life event is.
- 14:00and actually, I'm going to totally
- 14:01just give a plug for my team
- 14:03and the expert knowledge that we have
- 14:07because we've watched
- 14:08people go through
- 14:09such similar situations. Right.
- 14:12So you can learn from someone
- 14:14who has already had the same diagnosis
- 14:17that you have had.
- 14:18And okay, these are the tips.
- 14:20These are the little nuances of things
- 14:22that are going to be slightly different
- 14:23because you have been diagnosed
- 14:25with cancer in your eye
- 14:27instead of breast cancer, right?
- 14:29So it's not all going to be the same.
- 14:32so I think that being able to,
- 14:35you know, kind of say,
- 14:36all right,
- 14:36I gotta look at the people
- 14:37who've already done a podcast.
- 14:39It's not going to be
- 14:39the same
- 14:40as the people who have
- 14:42launched something else anyway.
- 14:44Yeah, absolutely.
- 14:45I mean, it's
- 14:46definitely you have to take
- 14:47from all the experts out there
- 14:49and try to mash it into something
- 14:50that fits what you're doing,
- 14:52and that's with anything
- 14:54that you're doing in life, any hardship,
- 14:55anything you're going through,
- 14:57take what you can take
- 14:58and then mash it together
- 14:59and figure out
- 15:00how to make it work for you.
- 15:01Because even though
- 15:02we're all going through different things,
- 15:03we're also all very different people.
- 15:05We are.
- 15:06And now I'm going to completely backtrack
- 15:08and say, and yet we all are
- 15:12humans with some basic needs
- 15:14that are similar.
- 15:15And, the
- 15:17What Friends Do team
- 15:18has had the opportunity
- 15:18to help so many people.
- 15:20There are some really basic
- 15:22things that we're like,
- 15:22let's just start with this, okay?
- 15:25Let's start simple.
- 15:26Let's start with the
- 15:28like the basics of communication,
- 15:30looking at providing food,
- 15:32looking at providing transportation,
- 15:34and asking who else is in your
- 15:36in your household?
- 15:37Who needs support
- 15:38and or is there a caregiver
- 15:39who needs support?
- 15:40And then once we have
- 15:42those basics kind of down,
- 15:45now we can get into the nuances
- 15:47of your specific situation.
- 15:49I'm looking at other people
- 15:50who've gone through the same thing.
- 15:52So along that line,
- 15:53who signs up for this?
- 15:54Is it up to the patient
- 15:55to sign themself up?
- 15:56Can a friend kind of family member
- 15:58like who starts.
- 15:59This so anyone can start this?
- 16:02And we have seen everyone
- 16:05that you just mentioned start this.
- 16:07I will say the most successful
- 16:10support teams are usually started by,
- 16:15a sister
- 16:16or a best friend or a next door
- 16:19neighbor
- 16:19or someone who is very intimately aware
- 16:22of what's going on
- 16:24and someone who is able to
- 16:26look at you, Megan, and say,
- 16:27girlfriend, you need some help.
- 16:29I know you don't think you do right now,
- 16:31but let me just tell you what I see.
- 16:33And it's way easier for me as the best
- 16:37friend, the sister,
- 16:38the next door neighbor
- 16:39that you know, someone like that
- 16:41close to you to be able to say, okay,
- 16:44here's what Megan needs.
- 16:45Like, this is
- 16:46this is where people can really help
- 16:48right now.
- 16:49because of what we started
- 16:50talking about
- 16:51at the beginning, it's so hard.
- 16:53It's so awkward.
- 16:54If I ask for help,
- 16:56what if no one wants to do it?
- 16:57Is this a weird thing to ask for? But.
- 17:00But if I am the one who's like,
- 17:02okay, Megan needs this,
- 17:03we all need to step in.
- 17:05Who's going to do it?
- 17:06It just makes it a lot easier.
- 17:08Oh, without a doubt. Absolutely.
- 17:09I think that's huge.
- 17:10So all of that said,
- 17:12our software is actually set up
- 17:13in such a way that,
- 17:15we really encourage the patient
- 17:16to be actively involved in it.
- 17:19and if they have the
- 17:21capacity at the time,
- 17:22because one of the other things
- 17:24that's really important, in long
- 17:27term and short
- 17:28term is to be able to document
- 17:30what's going on.
- 17:31And while you might think you are never,
- 17:34ever going to forget this, you never,
- 17:36ever want to have to relive this.
- 17:38Or these are details
- 17:39that aren't necessarily
- 17:41needed to be remembered.
- 17:42time does things to people, right?
- 17:44You don't always remember,
- 17:46you don't think you're going
- 17:47to want to remember,
- 17:48but then at some point
- 17:49you might and, so there's there's a
- 17:52you and you don't have to go back.
- 17:54But should the opportunity
- 17:56present itself down the road
- 17:57that you want to go back and say, wait,
- 17:59how did this happen?
- 18:00Which day, which day did this happen?
- 18:02What was the release
- 18:03sequence of events
- 18:05in whatever was going on?
- 18:07so for that reason, it's sometimes
- 18:09nice for the patient to be involved
- 18:11in the sharing of their story.
- 18:13The other reason
- 18:14that's also nice for this patient
- 18:17to have the opportunity
- 18:18to share their story is,
- 18:19they get to control their story
- 18:21and they get to have
- 18:22the opportunity to say,
- 18:24this is what I want shared.
- 18:26This is what I feel comfortable sharing.
- 18:28And when you can put it up in one spot,
- 18:31we're not playing telephone, right?
- 18:33Remember when we all used
- 18:35to sit in a circle and play telephone
- 18:37and it just doesn't.
- 18:38It just doesn't work.
- 18:39so having that opportunity to,
- 18:42own your own story,
- 18:44I think is very healing as well.
- 18:47and owning who has the rights
- 18:49and privilege to receive your story.
- 18:53Right.
- 18:54so the way our software works,
- 18:56you don't have to have it on Facebook
- 18:57for everybody to see
- 18:58and share all the places.
- 18:59Oh, whatever social media
- 19:01platform of your choice,
- 19:02you can still do that.
- 19:03And I'm not saying you shouldn't.
- 19:05I think there's a lot of benefit
- 19:06to that as well.
- 19:07but I think there's a lot to be said in,
- 19:10especially when situations
- 19:12can often feel out of control.
- 19:15Having the gift of,
- 19:17controlling your message.
- 19:19Yeah, I agree,
- 19:20and having that sense of privacy
- 19:22too, of like,
- 19:23I want to share with these people,
- 19:24but maybe not everybody on Facebook,
- 19:27you know, or or.
- 19:28Yeah, this
- 19:28I want to share with everybody.
- 19:29You could kind of control
- 19:30which parts you want to put where.
- 19:32You can.
- 19:33And again
- 19:33it's sometimes
- 19:34nice to not have to go back
- 19:36through the entire
- 19:37Facebook feed to see what.
- 19:38Wait what what what where is it.
- 19:40I know there was something in here
- 19:41like it's all just in one spot
- 19:44which is sometimes helpful as well.
- 19:46Again,
- 19:47there are things in my life
- 19:49that I never ever thought
- 19:50I wanted to have to revisit
- 19:52and that I never, ever
- 19:53thought I would forget details of.
- 19:55And after time,
- 19:57I don't remember the details of that.
- 19:59How did that work?
- 20:00And like, you know, like,
- 20:01where was I for this?
- 20:03Who was there?
- 20:04How's this going down?
- 20:05And I do kind of like, want to know.
- 20:07I think also like
- 20:09when you're in the situation,
- 20:10you just do
- 20:11what you have to do to survive.
- 20:12And then when you get out of it
- 20:13on the other side,
- 20:14you look back and you say,
- 20:15how did I live through that?
- 20:16Like, that was so big. How did I do that?
- 20:19And you should be proud of it
- 20:21and be able to revisit that and say,
- 20:23hey, I did this.
- 20:25Well, that is exactly where I wanted
- 20:27to take the rest of this part of it.
- 20:29Is it? There's also celebration in there.
- 20:32There's also the opportunity for like,
- 20:34wow, look at the great days that I had.
- 20:38look at the great things that happened
- 20:41during whatever,
- 20:43you know, however things were happening.
- 20:45and having that documented
- 20:47is really special.
- 20:48And look at all the people
- 20:49that showed up for me
- 20:50and look at how strong I was.
- 20:52And at the time it didn't feel like it.
- 20:53But looking back,
- 20:54I did so much
- 20:56and all these people were there.
- 20:57Yeah, a huge to all.
- 20:58Those people were there for me.
- 20:59Yeah. That's amazing.
- 21:01Okay, so my next question is
- 21:03so we've told everyone what it is,
- 21:05how it works.
- 21:06So now they somebody wants to sign up.
- 21:08What do they do to start.
- 21:10So they go to what friends do.com
- 21:13and they click start a team and it,
- 21:16it guides you through with some pretty
- 21:18I like to use easy
- 21:20questions, in air quotes
- 21:22because in a non stressful time
- 21:24they're super easy questions.
- 21:26But we know that sometimes
- 21:28when you're overwhelmed
- 21:28it can be a little more overwhelming.
- 21:31But we're just we're asking
- 21:32for your name.
- 21:33We're asking for your email address.
- 21:35email address is important
- 21:36because that's your login for everything.
- 21:39we're asking you
- 21:39to find a photo to put on
- 21:41so that if your friends
- 21:42are searching for it,
- 21:43you know,
- 21:44this is how software
- 21:45and apps work, right?
- 21:47and then where it gets hard is
- 21:50what kind of help do you need?
- 21:51And, and that's where people
- 21:54get tripped up a lot.
- 21:55so I don't want them to feel overwhelmed
- 21:57by having to get it right the first time.
- 22:00Right?
- 22:00Just, tossing
- 22:01a few meals,
- 22:02put in a couple of important
- 22:04upcoming events. Right.
- 22:06This is the next doctor's appointment.
- 22:07This is when we're going to find out
- 22:09more information.
- 22:10The reason I love to put
- 22:11doctor's appointments
- 22:12on their dates to not like specifics,
- 22:16but to say, okay, the next doctor's
- 22:18appointment is next Wednesday afternoon.
- 22:20We have no new information until then.
- 22:22Thank you for asking, but please don't.
- 22:25Yeah, I can see where
- 22:26that would be very beneficial.
- 22:27Yeah.
- 22:28So and
- 22:28and then if you get in there
- 22:30and you get tripped up,
- 22:31I have a whole team of people
- 22:32who their job is to help support you
- 22:35through this.
- 22:36Everyone loves our work
- 22:39because we really are passionate
- 22:40about helping you.
- 22:41and helping you through these situations.
- 22:44and we've done it before, so
- 22:46we're happy to guide you.
- 22:48And because you can draw
- 22:49on that experience, I'm
- 22:50sure you can give some great examples
- 22:52that might get people's
- 22:54brain started thinking,
- 22:55oh yeah, you know,
- 22:56that would be a good idea.
- 22:57And then that made me think of this.
- 22:58And I'm sure that feedback
- 22:59is probably very beneficial.
- 23:01And I guess I go ahead.
- 23:03Oh no.
- 23:03Well, and we've got the questions
- 23:05and the prompts to ask you.
- 23:07and like I said, our new paper
- 23:08planner lets you kind of like
- 23:10look through all of those prompts
- 23:12on your own also,
- 23:14and lets you kind of take that with you
- 23:17as you are going to go
- 23:19sit next to your friend
- 23:21and say,
- 23:22okay, let's let's figure out
- 23:24your care plan.
- 23:25Yeah, I love that.
- 23:26And I love that you call it a team.
- 23:28But I feel like from the very minute
- 23:30you go on to the software
- 23:32and you get started, it's
- 23:33that mentality of you, we got this.
- 23:36We are a team now.
- 23:38I think that's the perfect word.
- 23:39Yeah, I love that okay.
- 23:40So now they've gone on.
- 23:42They've started their team then do they.
- 23:45How do they share it.
- 23:46And and get people involved.
- 23:48So there are a couple of options.
- 23:50There's a share button,
- 23:51that lets you copy the link
- 23:55so that you can send it in an email
- 23:56to a whole bunch of people.
- 23:57It lets you posted to social media
- 23:59if you want to.
- 24:01it lets you just,
- 24:03type in people's
- 24:04email addresses
- 24:05and they will receive
- 24:06an email from our system.
- 24:08I really think the easiest way
- 24:10is to copy the link
- 24:11and text it out
- 24:13to a whole bunch of people,
- 24:14and then they will join.
- 24:15They have to create their own username,
- 24:17to log in to, to do this.
- 24:19and that's for privacy reasons
- 24:21that we've found
- 24:22our users really prefer the opportunity
- 24:25to kind of know
- 24:26who's on their, their privacy settings
- 24:28so that, you know, you can have it
- 24:30so that the,
- 24:31the person who set the team up
- 24:33has to approve,
- 24:34who is on the team
- 24:35and who isn't on the team.
- 24:36or you can have it open
- 24:37so that anyone
- 24:38who puts their email address
- 24:39in can come in
- 24:40and be part of your support team there.
- 24:42That's really smart.
- 24:43And, so one other thing that, you know,
- 24:45if it is
- 24:46someone from your faith organization,
- 24:48someone from your workplace,
- 24:50someone who may not know
- 24:52every social circle
- 24:54that you're a part of.
- 24:55what we really like
- 24:56to encourage is to say, like,
- 24:58hey, Megan,
- 24:58who are your top three people? Right.
- 25:00And can they help us
- 25:02get the word out to all of the people
- 25:04and ask people to help
- 25:07and ask people to spread the word.
- 25:09Hey, can you make sure all the neighbors
- 25:11know,
- 25:11hey, can you make sure
- 25:13all of the family is included, right?
- 25:15Because you might not have access
- 25:17if you're
- 25:17if this isn't
- 25:18you personally going through it,
- 25:20you might not have access
- 25:22to all of those emails.
- 25:23I'd like to
- 25:24kind of bring up one other point,
- 25:26right now
- 25:26that I should have mentioned earlier
- 25:28about who sets this up,
- 25:30and I love it
- 25:31when the patient sets it up on their own.
- 25:33And one of the reasons
- 25:35that patients don't
- 25:36set it up on their own.
- 25:37And I like to challenge them,
- 25:39except not really,
- 25:40because they're going through
- 25:41enough, is that they are like,
- 25:42I don't think I have anybody
- 25:43who wants to help me.
- 25:44And, I usually like to start
- 25:48asking some questions
- 25:49like, okay,
- 25:50but maybe maybe you you don't, but it
- 25:53what do you do on the weekends?
- 25:55Are you part of any groups?
- 25:57Are you
- 25:58a part of any faith organizations?
- 26:00What about the people who you work with?
- 26:03What about your family?
- 26:04What about your extended family?
- 26:06And those are the other things
- 26:07that I think
- 26:08are really important for patients.
- 26:10And I'm using the word
- 26:11patients, very generically.
- 26:13So I hope that
- 26:14people are not offended by that.
- 26:16but people do
- 26:17usually love
- 26:18and care about others,
- 26:20and they're usually much stronger
- 26:22social support
- 26:23circles and networks
- 26:25than people are often
- 26:26really willing
- 26:28to necessarily admit at first.
- 26:30So when you're the person
- 26:32going through it and you're like, oh,
- 26:33no one would ever sign up for me,
- 26:35I doubt that.
- 26:36Yeah, I totally agree.
- 26:37And it
- 26:38so many people, like we said,
- 26:39we want to help that,
- 26:41you know,
- 26:41you might think, well,
- 26:42they barely know me,
- 26:42but you would be so surprised
- 26:45how much they do want to do.
- 26:46And, you know,
- 26:47it could grow into a friendship
- 26:48like you
- 26:49don't closed doors
- 26:50until you give it a shot.
- 26:52And you have no idea
- 26:54what other people have gone
- 26:55through, either.
- 26:55Through
- 26:56maybe they have gone
- 26:58through something similar,
- 27:00or maybe their best friend
- 27:01or their relative has gone
- 27:03through something similar.
- 27:04Also, and you have the opportunity
- 27:06to learn from that.
- 27:07Yeah. Or even just bond over it.
- 27:10Just bond over it.
- 27:11Yeah. Yeah.
- 27:12I think that
- 27:13there's just
- 27:13such opportunity for connection
- 27:16in these times.
- 27:17Yeah, I totally agree.
- 27:19So give us a little bit of like feedback.
- 27:22You've gotten either some like reviews
- 27:23or like stories that you love.
- 27:25Like, who is this helping?
- 27:27Like give us some,
- 27:28some insight into these people.
- 27:29Well, as I was thinking through
- 27:32about this specific podcast,
- 27:35we had the opportunity many years
- 27:38ago, and I've, I've received,
- 27:40clearance from the family
- 27:41to share information about this
- 27:43because their young daughter
- 27:45actually had, I cancer
- 27:47and, they had two boys at home still,
- 27:49they were traveling two plus hours
- 27:52to a different city to receive treatment.
- 27:55And when they used the site,
- 27:59the school
- 28:00was able to jump in
- 28:01and do so much to support the kids.
- 28:04And they had an organization space
- 28:06to do it,
- 28:07and everyone was updated
- 28:09and they were able to say,
- 28:10okay, leaves coming home
- 28:12today, we're going to make sure
- 28:13that her brothers feel
- 28:15so incredibly supported
- 28:17because she's been gone for so long.
- 28:20they could do special things
- 28:22to support the whole family through it.
- 28:24which I think
- 28:25is one of the really unique
- 28:27opportunities.
- 28:28And I don't want to, like,
- 28:30be all happy, glossy through all of this,
- 28:33but I think that
- 28:34they're just a lot of other ways
- 28:36that people can be supported.
- 28:37And and remembering
- 28:39that it's not just the person
- 28:41who is going through
- 28:43this, the situation, who's affected.
- 28:45and so being able to see specifically
- 28:48with this one family
- 28:50how much support they received
- 28:52for the other two boys
- 28:53while they were caring for their daughter
- 28:55who was going through treatment.
- 28:57it's that's huge.
- 28:58And that,
- 28:59I mean, those are the kind of stories
- 29:01that you just hear,
- 29:02and it just restores
- 29:04your faith in humanity
- 29:05that, you know,
- 29:06we are all in this together,
- 29:07and we do have each other.
- 29:09We do.
- 29:10And again,
- 29:11I started this off,
- 29:12like when you give people the chance
- 29:15to do something, they will. Yes.
- 29:17And they'll
- 29:18they'll feel honored
- 29:19that you let them in to do it. 100%.
- 29:23And they might surprise you.
- 29:24They might do a little extra
- 29:25than what you asked for,
- 29:26that you didn't even realize you needed,
- 29:27but you did.
- 29:29Well,
- 29:29I think that's one of the biggest things
- 29:32that, you know, I learn every week,
- 29:35and I've been doing this for ten years.
- 29:36But every week
- 29:37I see something new
- 29:39that people do for each other.
- 29:41that I'm like, oh, that's brilliant.
- 29:43I had no idea.
- 29:44We have one idea that came from a woman,
- 29:47and I share this one
- 29:48all the time from Mary,
- 29:51and she is a daily check in person.
- 29:53And now it's like
- 29:55an actual function on our website
- 29:57because I love it so much.
- 29:58She's like,
- 29:59oh, yeah,
- 30:00I like to be the person
- 30:01that's like, okay, I'm
- 30:02taking every Tuesday
- 30:03and I'm your person for the day.
- 30:05So I'm going to text you
- 30:06at seven in the morning
- 30:07and say, do you me
- 30:09come over and start your coffee,
- 30:10and then I'm going to text you
- 30:12in the middle of the morning
- 30:13to make sure you have your lunch covered.
- 30:15Do you need me to run any errands for you
- 30:17like I'm your person this day?
- 30:20So you just tell me
- 30:22because I got the day blocked off
- 30:23to run errands
- 30:24for you to come over and help
- 30:26to do all of the things.
- 30:29And I was like,
- 30:29well, that's a fabulous idea, you know?
- 30:32And then it's not a burden to anyone else
- 30:34because like, for me, I'd be like,
- 30:36oh no, I blocked my Tuesday off
- 30:38because I'm helping Megan today.
- 30:40So you you text me all day,
- 30:41you tell me what you need, girlfriend.
- 30:43I'm here,
- 30:43and then you don't feel
- 30:44like you're taking advantage
- 30:46because you know that
- 30:46they're there for you
- 30:47that day,
- 30:48and then no one's
- 30:48getting burnt out of like,
- 30:50well, they asked me to do stuff all week
- 30:51long, and I have my own family
- 30:53because you've set that
- 30:54boundary of Tuesdays my day and I.
- 30:56So I can I share a quick personal story.
- 30:59But this week,
- 31:00so your listeners have a general idea
- 31:03of what my businesses are at this point.
- 31:05And, a few years ago was a Friday night.
- 31:09My husband at the time was working late
- 31:12and out of state,
- 31:13and I needed to go to the store
- 31:15and get some food for my kids
- 31:16because we didn't have
- 31:17anything for dinner,
- 31:18and they were just barely old enough
- 31:20that I left them home by themselves.
- 31:22And I got to the store,
- 31:23and I was walking into the grocery,
- 31:25and a woman didn't see
- 31:26me, and I was hit by a car.
- 31:28Very low speed,
- 31:29low impact,
- 31:29but I still ended up with a broken wrist
- 31:32and a broken foot.
- 31:33Wow.
- 31:33And, I ended up with surgery
- 31:35a couple of days later.
- 31:37Again, I couldn't,
- 31:38I couldn't drive, I couldn't walk,
- 31:41I couldn't even get myself
- 31:43in and out of the shower alone.
- 31:45I couldn't
- 31:45get my coffee cup by myself because,
- 31:48you know, like
- 31:49it was
- 31:49it was either on crutches
- 31:51or wheeling myself places.
- 31:52And one hand was broken and,
- 31:54you know, like I couldn't do anything.
- 31:56And my mom and sister
- 31:57and best friend
- 31:58had to come and sit me down
- 32:00while I was sitting down.
- 32:01But they had to come
- 32:02and sit down with me.
- 32:03And they said,
- 32:04you are putting so much burden on us.
- 32:07It's not fair to us to be the only ones.
- 32:10But also can we
- 32:11look at your business
- 32:12like, let's, let's do this.
- 32:14But it was so hard for me to admit
- 32:16that I was going to need that help,
- 32:18but it also took me a few minutes
- 32:20to recognize the burden
- 32:22that I was placing unintentionally
- 32:25on my mom
- 32:26and my sister
- 32:27and my best friend
- 32:27for having to do everything else.
- 32:30And they love me
- 32:31and they care for me,
- 32:32and they still will.
- 32:33But there are so many other people
- 32:34who could help alleviate that.
- 32:37And then they had capacity
- 32:39to help with things
- 32:40that I wasn't comfortable
- 32:41with other people helping me.
- 32:42I think that's
- 32:43a huge important thing to note,
- 32:45too, is you can
- 32:46you can delegate
- 32:47those little things like guilt,
- 32:49maybe just a little thing
- 32:50so that those important private
- 32:52things like getting you in
- 32:53and out of the shower, can be saved
- 32:55for the people who you are
- 32:56that close to you
- 32:57without putting everything on them.
- 32:58And what I learned was, and again,
- 33:01this is maybe a little guilty TMI,
- 33:03but one of my best friends was like,
- 33:05don't make me cook for you,
- 33:07but I'll come change all your bandages
- 33:09and I'll get you in
- 33:09and out of the shower.
- 33:11She has a special needs daughter. She's.
- 33:13And she's been my best friend forever.
- 33:14She's like,
- 33:15I don't care about naked bodies.
- 33:16Let me just lift you out of the shower.
- 33:18I think, like she's like,
- 33:20but please let me do that
- 33:21so that I don't have to make you dinner.
- 33:22Yeah, that's
- 33:23just like what we talked about before.
- 33:24You got to do what
- 33:25you're comfortable doing,
- 33:26what you're good at doing,
- 33:28not what you hate doing.
- 33:29Don't sign up for something you hate
- 33:30because you feel. Like you have to.
- 33:32And then she didn't have to, like,
- 33:33spend all of her time driving my kids
- 33:35places or helping me get groceries,
- 33:37or do
- 33:37all of the other little things
- 33:39that still needed to happen.
- 33:40Like you just said,
- 33:41those could be delegated out
- 33:42to other people who want to help
- 33:44but don't have the space,
- 33:46the closest space to us
- 33:47to do those other things.
- 33:48Absolutely.
- 33:50So, what is there
- 33:51anything else that you want to add?
- 33:52Like anything
- 33:53that we haven't gone over yet?
- 33:54Well,
- 33:55I kind of want to shamelessly
- 33:56plug my podcast
- 33:58right now
- 33:58only because, the very first episode,
- 34:02I really dig into who's allowed to know
- 34:05about what's going on and talking about,
- 34:09kind of those levels of friends
- 34:11and who gets to know what
- 34:12and how close they get to come in to you
- 34:14as things are going
- 34:16like, as you're going through things.
- 34:17So my podcast is called Kitchen Chats
- 34:20with Aimee Can't Track.
- 34:22And the reason
- 34:22it's called kitchen chats
- 34:24is because when something major
- 34:26has happened in my life
- 34:28or my close friends lives,
- 34:30we gather in the kitchen
- 34:31and we sit down
- 34:32and we figure out what's next.
- 34:34And so that's what
- 34:35we're doing on my podcast.
- 34:37And so I would love the opportunity
- 34:39for listeners to learn something,
- 34:42take something away for either
- 34:45how they can receive help
- 34:46or how they can help
- 34:47someone else in the future. Definitely.
- 34:49And we'll link that in the show notes,
- 34:50because I think that is
- 34:52definitely something
- 34:53that all of our listeners
- 34:53should check out. Thanks.
- 34:55And my team is available.
- 34:57If people are like, well,
- 34:58our situation needs a little bit of help.
- 35:00Hey, that's our favorite.
- 35:02We'd love to.
- 35:02That's great.
- 35:03I love that so much.
- 35:05But let's pause here real quick.
- 35:06So Jamie, when you watch this
- 35:08cut here, did you,
- 35:10did you do like a coupon code
- 35:12for the planner or anything like that
- 35:13or like your promotion or do you want to?
- 35:15We can skip it or we can plug that too.
- 35:18If you want to kind of drive the how.
- 35:19Do I website.
- 35:20So I do a coupon code.
- 35:22I just have a I don't either.
- 35:24We can't.
- 35:24We want to
- 35:25I can't give them a link to the planner
- 35:28okay I have a coupon code though
- 35:29I'd love to give them a 10% discount.
- 35:31I just don't know how to do it.
- 35:33Let's record that with a tentative Jamie.
- 35:36Don't put it in
- 35:37unless we tell you
- 35:38we figured out the coupon code,
- 35:40and then if we don't figure it out,
- 35:42we'll we'll record a separate ending.
- 35:44We'll just kind of do, like, two,
- 35:45or we'll just do a little, coupon code
- 35:47and then we'll cut again
- 35:48and then we'll keep going.
- 35:49Okay. All right.
- 35:50So Jamie, we're starting again.
- 35:51Okay. Ready?
- 35:52Okay. Aimee.
- 35:52So tell me about your planner.
- 35:54The paper planner.
- 35:55You have a coupon code for our listeners.
- 35:57We do.
- 35:58so our planner is available
- 36:01for purchase on Amazon,
- 36:03and you can find it, via
- 36:06a link
- 36:07that will be available in this podcast.
- 36:09And we will use, a code for 10% off.
- 36:13And it is ten for all of your listeners
- 36:17to receive a 10% off of their,
- 36:20planner purchase.
- 36:21Oh, Aimee, thank you so much.
- 36:23That is such a wonderful thing
- 36:24to gift our community.
- 36:25And I know that so many people
- 36:26will take advantage of that,
- 36:27including me. paper.
- 36:29I need paper, so I love it.
- 36:31It's I am embarrassed to admit
- 36:33how many planners
- 36:34and notebooks are on my.
- 36:36I don't think I could count quickly
- 36:38enough on my desk right now.
- 36:39Yeah, that's me too.
- 36:41Paper and pens everywhere.
- 36:42Yes. Okay, okay. Jamie, cut here.
- 36:45And if we have the coupon code at that,
- 36:47if not, we'll pick back up here.
- 36:49Is there anything else
- 36:50that you want to go over,
- 36:50or should we wrap up?
- 36:51or we can just say that
- 36:53the planner is available on Amazon.
- 36:55Let's do that and then we'll wrap up.
- 36:57Yeah, definitely.
- 36:58And then we'll wrap up. It's okay.
- 36:59Yep. That's good.
- 37:00All right. So Jamie this is option two.
- 37:02If there's no coupon code okay.
- 37:03All right.
- 37:04So Aimee tell me about your paper planner
- 37:06that you have.
- 37:07Oh thank you.
- 37:08Our paper
- 37:08planner is walking people
- 37:10through essentially
- 37:12all of the things, plus more,
- 37:14than what we've discussed here.
- 37:16And it is available
- 37:17for purchase on Amazon.
- 37:18It is,
- 37:20what friends do all one word planner.
- 37:23And, I love the opportunity
- 37:25for people to have paper and pencil
- 37:28and pen and colored markers to go through
- 37:32and organize
- 37:33the things in life
- 37:35beyond what's provided
- 37:37by the medical system.
- 37:38Absolutely.
- 37:39I think that would be so beneficial
- 37:40to so many people in our community.
- 37:42So I encourage you all to go
- 37:43find this planner, too.
- 37:44I'm going to get one too,
- 37:45because people paper and pen.
- 37:47That's what I need.
- 37:47I have so many.
- 37:49Yes, notebooks and papers everywhere.
- 37:51yeah. So many. it's a problem.
- 37:54Yes, yes.
