- 1:18today's episode of the Adventures of Philip Marlow. The original airn eight June twenty
- 1:23fifth, nineteen forty nine and the title The Key Man, Get This and
- 1:32Get It straight. Crime is a sucker's road, and those who travel had
- 1:34wind up in the gut of the prison of the Grave. There's no other
- 1:37end, but they never learned. This one began at the threat of a
- 1:41beating that turned in a murder with a brown eyed blonde, a jovial hippopotamus,
- 1:45and a tough ex soldier of fortune, all complicating the problem until I
- 1:48got next to the key Man. From the pen of Raymond Trendler, outstanding
- 1:53author of mystery, comes his most famous character and crime's most deadly enemy.
- 1:57As we present, they had been us of Philip Marlowe. Now with Gerald
- 2:12Moore start as Philip Marlowe, we bring you tonight's exciting story The key Man.
- 2:34Along about dusk, Hollywood Boulevard is some desolate place between the end of
- 2:38work and the start of play, and about as boisterous as taps so except
- 2:43for a sello faced masher leaning against a nearby storefront warming up his evening lear.
- 2:47I was alone on a lot of fancy pavement when I walked up to
- 2:50the box office of a newsheal bit at near Kowinga, paid my forty cents
- 2:53admission tax included, and started inside. Where of all places I was to
- 2:58meet my new client one come. He'd called my office at six thirty five,
- 3:02and, in a tight voice, fringed with fear, urged me to
- 3:06find him in the last row, last seat, far left of the boulevard
- 3:08cinema at once, if I could use a fifty dollar bill. It was
- 3:13exactly a quarter to seven when I crossed the length of lobby too while four
- 3:16and entered the theater proper, which was almost empty. It was two minutes
- 3:20after that before I could see well enough to tell that the man, all
- 3:23alone in the aforementioned seat, who wore white French cups protruding out of gray
- 3:27flannel, a pleated frown, and not paying any attention to the bathing beauties
- 3:30on the screen who were water skiing through Florida's cypress gardens, had to be
- 3:35my client. I eased in and sat down next to him. I could
- 3:38see he was watching me out of the corner of his eye. Marlo,
- 3:43Yeah, my plane leaves for New York. Can happ an hour? What
- 3:49the ought to see? That I am on it and in good health?
- 3:52Who once it otherwise? Bonnie Kovat an next sholdier Reportune who thinks with his
- 3:57fists. He works boss in the garage, but they parked cars. He's
- 4:02threatened to kill me with his bare head. Why would you do nothing wrong?
- 4:06Nothing wrong? It was perfectly legitimate. He had a chance to get
- 4:11out of Hippo Place, Get out of woose Place. Hippo the Kuvec had
- 4:17a chance to buy a location of his zoo, but you got there first,
- 4:19look, mister huma Wan. And we'll continue this in the lounge.
- 4:21It's quieter out there. Yes, yeah, yeah, come on, ah,
- 4:31this is better. Come on, we can talk over here. So
- 4:35you beat Kovec out of the property. He wanted. Then what happened?
- 4:38And when he found out he went crazy. He swore I bribed the Riversted
- 4:43broker, high pressure the owner, all that kind of wild hog. You
- 4:45know now I'm out of the place I bought from under him. Is a
- 4:47good investment? Oh yeah, but chicken feed compared to the deal I'm going
- 4:53to close in New York tomorrow if I get there, so for fifty bucks,
- 4:57I'm to see that you do just that. Huh he is, But
- 4:59I've already it made your work easier. I told Hippolink, all three hundred
- 5:03pounds of him. I told him in a loud voice this afternoon that I
- 5:06was going out of town by train at seven tonight, figuring, of course
- 5:11that Kovac, who's nearby but wouldn't do anything with people around, would over
- 5:15hear me, and your connection with Hippo is what I parked my car in
- 5:19his garage period. Anyhow, at five thirty to night, I drove down
- 5:25power to the Union station. I left my car and a lot there and
- 5:28went, after which you doubled back, got outside into a cab and headed
- 5:30for here and a comfortable wait until play time, which you're afraid might not
- 5:33fool anybody, including the toughness the Covac since you've hired me, right,
- 5:36Yes, that's right. I never caught sight of him trading me manon and
- 5:41frankly, when i'm I'm afraid of him. Can you understand them? Sure?
- 5:46Here is always understandable. Well, what's the itinerary, mister Hummel?
- 5:50Here to the airport? No, no, no, no, no,
- 5:53First to my house. I still have a bag to pack. I'll take
- 5:55a cab. You follow in your car, then wait outside my place.
- 5:58That's forty one hundred Fountain and just below Lassie. And again, yeah,
- 6:00I know, yes. When I get back into the cab, you follow
- 6:03again until I'm safe aboard the plate out here. Here's your money? Anything
- 6:11else? Yeah? Do you carry a gun, mister Hummel? Oh nearly
- 6:15no. But tonight man. Ah, yes, it's a service gun forty
- 6:17five, and believe me, if I have to use it, I will.
- 6:24Now let's get out of here quickly. I was twenty minutes playing follow
- 6:30the Leader up through Hollywood the Fountain Avenue as far as the neat cube of
- 6:33stucco that was number forty one hundred, where I parked behind the taxi lights
- 6:38out, and waited until I heard a frightened screams from what had to be
- 6:42Martin Hummel. I pile out of my car and darted past the cabin.
- 6:45You said he had enough trouble in his life, and ran up the front
- 6:46steps and into the house. Wearing the light of a single overturned lamp.
- 6:49Of the bedroom, I found my client face down in a widening pool of
- 6:54his own blood. I started for the rest of the rooms, but then
- 6:57the sound of a motor roaring out of the alley behind the house told me
- 7:00I was wasting my time. When I returned to the bedroom, one glance
- 7:02at humble still form and said that the man who had been afraid for his
- 7:06life only thirty minutes ago was already very dead. Next to his body was
- 7:13the forty five he never got to use and alongside of that the miniature crystal
- 7:15ball split it with blood that killed him. There was a key which I
- 7:20found fit the front door, lying in the middle of the coppet. The
- 7:24drawers and closets were all open, as well as his half backed suitcase.
- 7:27It's a good time to call the police. I'micide, They talked Matthews.
- 7:36Malo, Lieutenant. I'm at forty one hundred Fountain and standing next to a
- 7:40man named Mark Humlo used to be a client. He's dead. Matthews murdered.
- 7:44The idea who did it? Film? And I got an idea it
- 7:46might be a lot of muscle called Bonnie Covac who works in the garage in
- 7:48Santa Monica Boulevard. He sure it wasn't a robbery killing. No, you
- 7:51know, we's had a lot of second story jobs there, but every three
- 7:54weeks in that neighborhood. I'm not sure of anything yet. But you see,
- 7:57I was, oh, company, Lieutenant, your leave, Mark,
- 8:03I oh, I beg your pardon? Is mister Hammelin? Yes? And
- 8:07no? Did he expect you? No? He didn't. Who are you,
- 8:11Philip Marlowe? Well he's Mark In or not? Yes? HEAs in
- 8:16you'll find him in here if you win, says thank you. I'm sorry
- 8:20I bit your head off, but what I have to Oh? No,
- 8:26instead shot with that? No, No, it's his own gun. It
- 8:31was beating the death of that glass ball there. Oh that key is his
- 8:33too, If it's the front door, I already tried it, and then
- 8:35I put it back when I found it. Since the police appreciate neatness on
- 8:39the scene, that doesn't make sense. Mark always carried his keys in a
- 8:43leather case. It should be right there in his right pocket. Yeah,
- 8:48hey, you're right, that's key with a bunch of others. And yeah,
- 8:52this one matches the one on the floor. How do you know about
- 8:54this? Oh, I'm an old friend of Mark's. Man, you'd have
- 8:58to be. Well, you such a heard it? Tell him? I
- 9:01don't. Maybe I can help you. Maybe it was a little message you're
- 9:03going to deliver from Bonnie Kovac. I don't know anyone by that name.
- 9:09And since that leaves us with very little and common model, I think I'll
- 9:11leave with only this forty five here for companionship. Oh fine, Now get
- 9:16over there against the wall and turn your back. We'll go on. Now
- 9:20what and don't move until you hear me drive away, or your health will
- 9:26suddenly be very, very poor. Good night, my little red riding hood
- 9:35slammed out of the place I knew I could either follow her or wait for
- 9:37Matthews the siren up to the front door and then tell all one last look
- 9:41around the room, including the key in the middle of the cop It made
- 9:43me change my mind again. If the key could be traced, it might
- 9:46be a definite link to Kovac. So I headed for Hippolynk's garage and Santa
- 9:50Monica Boulevard and the hope for further information about a hot, temperate man who
- 9:54worked there. Less than five minutes later, I was walking down a cement
- 10:01ramp that dropped in the street level into an acre of underground parking space filled
- 10:03with a crowded heavy with chromium cars belongs Detechable neighborhood nearby. Hippo himself was
- 10:11of aspiring oval, approximately five eight measured in any direction, with tiny eyes,
- 10:16tiny nose, and a dozen shins that danced when he laughed, which
- 10:18seemed to be always. He was standing next to a pickup truck marked Ace
- 10:22battery Shop talking to the driver and because of that, you want more money
- 10:26for him that I suppose is easy to get. Now, Look, hippoles,
- 10:31in't Plum. I won't pay anymore. My overhead is too high already,
- 10:35so if you can't get them for me at the same price, forget
- 10:37the whole deal. Besides, I don't like the way you do business anyhow.
- 10:41I mean and what meaning that when I give you an order, Plum,
- 10:45I want it delivered to me in person, not just any flunky that's
- 10:48standing around. Okay, okay, that was a slip. It won't happen
- 10:52again, and I did. Won't go bye, Plum, I got customers.
- 10:56Can I help you? Miss Year? Maybe I'm looking for Bunny Kovac?
- 11:00Is he around? You know? Why? What do you want him?
- 11:01For? Him? Maybe? Murder? Why Bonnie? He kills someone?
- 11:07Wait a minute, pull, I said, goodbye, go on,
- 11:09beat it. Okay, okay, hippo, I'll see you around. Let's
- 11:15go in the office here, Mischian little quieter, ye sit down? You
- 11:26no private detective names? Malo, hippo Marlow, Huh never heard of you?
- 11:31Then, I never heard of a lot of people. Huh, that's
- 11:35right, hippo, people like, for instance, Mark Hummel. Why him?
- 11:41He was the one Kovic killed. Well, well, what do you
- 11:43know? Doesn't seem to break you up? Why I should have? Hummo
- 11:48was a laugh Marlow? Everybody said so. Of course, I didn't know
- 11:52him personally except a joke with him when he brought his car, And you
- 11:54know, her little laugh goes a long way with some guys. Tell me,
- 12:00vot, did you know that Hummel was going out of town? Yeah?
- 12:01He told me this afternoon. Should a gun yesterday? Huh? Shut
- 12:07up? Okay, okay, So you don't like jokes straight? What do
- 12:13you want for an open of this? The tall blonde with brown eyes and
- 12:18a pretty face and knows how to handle a forty five as well as conversation
- 12:20walked in here. Would you know her? Am? I could be Ronda
- 12:24Boom on Barney's Girls. He lives in a plush apartment over thirty eight Sweetsir
- 12:28Drive, just above the strip. How does she figure? Probably greatn Catalina
- 12:31swimsuit, But in this deal, I'm not sure. She might have put
- 12:35me on the right track by setting me straight about a key to Humbold's apartment
- 12:37that I found next to his body. Wasn't his key? Yeah? The
- 12:41design on it near the top. The round part was like a fancy figure
- 12:45eight mean anything to you, not being a locksmith? No anything else?
- 12:50Yeah, where can I find Bonnie Kovec? How would I know? We
- 12:52quit it five today? It's like he does every day, and I quit
- 12:56it nine Marlow, which happens to be right now. So go by just
- 13:01like that, Yeah, just like that. You see, if I work
- 13:05late, Marlow, I gotta pay myself over time. That hurts because I
- 13:09can't afford it. See what I mean by I was out on the street
- 13:22and behind the wheel of my car before I saw the man in the back
- 13:26seat to what a snub nose thirty eight level of my hairline? I lookd
- 13:30rugged enough to be no one else but Bonnie Kobak. Drive Marlow straight to
- 13:33the corner of Melrose and Orange Drive. I live over a store there and
- 13:37it's quiet so we can talk without being disturbed. Come on drive right ahead
- 13:54of your Marlow one with a close transom. Keep walking and when I get
- 13:58there and you'll go inside, sit down and rest while you listen to what
- 14:01to the truth? Mallow, I've been following you long enough tonight I know
- 14:05that you're off your rocket. She fella, I didn't kill Hummel. Yeah,
- 14:09I know he's double jointed. It was suicide. Slug himself from behind,
- 14:13all right, Yeah, he's a key. Open up. Okay,
- 14:18Hey, you made a mistake. Covec wrong key. What are you talking
- 14:22about? Let me see that. Sure with pleasure now that I got your
- 14:26gun, But try it yourself a my COVID close quarters make me nervous.
- 14:31You're making a mistake, mollow Yeah, yeah, sure, I am the
- 14:33guys who are off that rock I always do. Remember I get over there
- 14:37on that chair and behave while I use your phone. Don't we're all killing
- 14:41Hipple. Barney, take the gentleman's gun. It's heavy for him. Sure,
- 14:45not here, boy, here's some money. Get clear of la listenings
- 14:48all cleaned up. You're in a bad spot, I know. But I
- 14:52didn't kill Hummel. Hippo. You gotta believe me. Yeah, by all
- 14:54means, Barney, my boy, if you say it, I believe it.
- 14:56But others won't be that accommodating, I'm sure. So go on,
- 15:01and no matter what you do, don't worry about Marlowe. Nah, he
- 15:03won't be pulling. You can count on that, Barney. In just a
- 15:20moment the second act of Philip Marlowe. But first programs on a summer Sunday

- 15:58these same seeb Has Network station. Now with our star Gerald Moore, we
- 16:03returned to the second act of Philip Marlowe and tonight's story the key Man.
- 16:18The gun wrapped in the thick fat fists of Hippo, looked like a toy
- 16:22as he leveled it at my chest while Kovic got away and the fat boy
- 16:26kicked the door shut, leaned his under US three hundred pounds against it,
- 16:29and smiled, smile faded gradually and finally died, but the muzzle of the
- 16:33gun in his hand didn't so much as twitch until a bat at alarm clock
- 16:37on the dresser had clanked off a monotonous fifteen minutes. At that point,
- 16:41Hippo Link leaved his face up into another smile, waddled across the room,
- 16:45and laid the gun down on the table in front of me. Okay,
- 16:51you behaved yourself, real nice. Barnie's got all the head started you'll need,
- 16:55so you can leave now. You know something, Link, You're not
- 16:57only fat between the sleeves, you're of a wait for twenty years too.
- 17:00Helping us suspect escape doesn't sit well at headquarters. Just a minute, boy,
- 17:04you're kind of jumping to conclusions, aren't you. You were putting the
- 17:07muscle on a friend of mine and I help you out. That's all that
- 17:11happened so far. So you look a little silly running me in on that.
- 17:15But if you still want to try more guns right there on the table,
- 17:21okay, hippo, you win for now. But don't think I buy
- 17:23that silly one two three story of yours may not be pex bad boy,
- 17:27but I don't see you as a Galahad. Either, well, how do
- 17:33you put the story together? Then I don't know that that's any of your
- 17:37business, And even if I thought it were, I wouldn't tell you.
- 17:40I'll let you know this much. And I don't know for sure that Kovak
- 17:42is Gilly, But then I don't know for sure where you are Kovac's girl
- 17:45run the Beaumont fit either, I wouldn't know. You said you knew it,
- 17:49So you seem to think a good deal of that kid Kovc. So
- 17:53it couldn't it be possible she paid you to come up here and see that
- 17:56her boyfriend got away. Like you said, Marlow, I don't know that
- 18:00there's any of your own business. How much cash does it take for you
- 18:04to stick your neck out as far as you have? H h Could it
- 18:07be you've got a thing going for Covix girl would be glad to see him
- 18:11out of time. Ah, you're kidding, Look right on your loan.
- 18:17What's it to you now? My client was knocked off right under my nose?
- 18:21Remember, are you gonna let me add a solitary? Sure, pick
- 18:26up your pistol and run, And if you need me for any more help,
- 18:30be sure and let me know. I left tip I was standing in
- 18:37Kovac's flattened downstairs. I stopped the phone booth long enough to have the latest
- 18:41developments for what they were worth relay to Lieutenant Matthews, and I drove out
- 18:45to West Sweets and turned straight up into the hills and parked in front of
- 18:48number thirty eight, the Morrol Apartments, a terrace teep of pastel plaster and
- 18:52angled glass in which Ronda Beaumont had a first floor front. I took a
- 18:56look at the lodge private view of the city as I crossed the small private
- 19:00petio and knocked on the substantial private entrance. When I cracked open eye helped
- 19:03it along just enough to step inside. Fat Marmol. You will come in,
- 19:11won't you, whether you're asked or not. Yes, And it's sweet
- 19:12of you to ask me, Randa, is is he here? He hmm?
- 19:18In a city of four million, half of which are male, that
- 19:22borders on being a stupid question. But the answer is no in any case,
- 19:26because until you strong armed your way in here, I was alone.
- 19:29I can't buy it. I think of Bonnie's the kind of a boy that
- 19:30we want to take stuff like you right along with him when he leaves Bonnie
- 19:33leaving m h, what are you talking about? Running away from that mess
- 19:37over on Fountain? He's leaving town? You're lying, I've heard nothing.
- 19:41I'll take the handbag, baby, heavy enough to have that cute forty five
- 19:48caliber compact inside, right, Okay, it's in there, take it.
- 19:51I don't care. But look, Marla, is that the truth about Barney
- 19:53leaving town? As if you didn't know? Yes. And while we're on
- 19:56that subject, why did you show up at Marc Hammelo's place tonight? I
- 20:00went there to warn him about Barney. Wait a minute, Wait a minute,
- 20:03I thought you were in love with Kovac. I am. Do I
- 20:06have to draw you a picture Bonnie Kovak strong and reckless, but he was
- 20:11trying hard, awfully hard, to get started for himself. And then well,
- 20:15I used to go with Mark before I met Barney, and because of
- 20:18that, Mark deliberately beat him out of the best deal he'd ever had,
- 20:22the Loud just despite me. Well, Barnie was curious, and I knew
- 20:26something terrible would happen if they ever got together, So so I went to
- 20:30tell Mark to stay out of his way. He got there a little too
- 20:33late. Is that it? I? Don't know. Well, at least
- 20:38give me a handkerchief out of my bag. Marlo darn it. Yeah,
- 20:42sure, here I am. Hey, Hey, these keys, Randa,
- 20:49this one, the one with the figure out design. Where'd you get it?
- 20:52With's my new door? Ky? Yeah? I know, but what'd
- 20:53you get it? I don't know. Barney had it made for me one
- 20:56day while we were having lunch. Who's the guy who made it? I
- 20:59don't know. Where are we eating that day? Hungarian place on Fairfax near
- 21:03Santa Monica. Where are you going, mad? Fairfacts near Santa Monica.
- 21:07Here's your bag, Runda, And if you've got any sense, they put
- 21:10and try real hard not to shoot anybody, at least until I calla How
- 21:15long babies? Way late Extra? The worlds is terrible shape, and some
- 21:26mess read all about it, late Extra papers. It's all over now,
- 21:30paper mister, Oh thanks, kid, Tell me something. Where's locksmith on
- 21:34this block? Locksmith? No, there ain't nothing. Come on, sure,
- 21:37there is a guy who makes keys. It's gotta be thank hard.
- 21:41It's important, think hard, he says. Look, mister, I know
- 21:42this whole neighborhood like the back of my own hand. No key maker,
- 21:47Well, how about a guy who's shopping, saws, scissors, things like
- 21:49that. Nah, nothing like that. We got filling stations, bars,
- 21:53a delicate Tessen drug store, shoemaker, dry goods store, three restaurants once
- 21:59hung that's on Fairfax, Ace battery shop there across the street, toy store
- 22:03on the corner. A lamphage joint. Wait a minute, hold it plum
- 22:08Plume. Yeah, yeah, old man Plume owns the joint. A real
- 22:12sour apple, you know what I mean. Place a dumb too, but
- 22:15he works hard. He's probably over there right now working in the back room.
- 22:18Bless you, my boy, Thanks a lot. Yeah, who is
- 22:32it? Customer, My battery is dead. You gotta help me. Look,
- 22:37mister, my place is closed up. Come back, sorry, Plume,
- 22:41but tomorrow is a long way off. This is an emergency. I
- 22:44take it easy and you'll be okay. I got a job for you,
- 22:47and it's got to be done tonight. We listen, I said, my
- 22:48place shot app I get this Plume. I'm a friend of Hippo Link San
- 22:52Bonnie Kovacs, all of which makes you perfect for my job. What kind
- 22:57of a job you're talking about? This? It's a key, duplicated a
- 23:03key, Hey, buddy, this is a battery shop. I can't make
- 23:07keys in the first place. You gotta have a line. I said this
- 23:08was an emergency, didn't I get busy with what my fingernails. I don't
- 23:12know how to cut keys. Somebody's stringing you pile and I don't keep away
- 23:17from that draw well, well, well, whole drawer full of blank keys.
- 23:26Huh at thirty eight in the drawer here must be that license you spoke
- 23:30of. Come on, you get up, wait, wait me, leave
- 23:33me alone. I didn't do anything. I listened, Plume. I want
- 23:34one straight answer out of you fast. You made a delivery to Link's garage
- 23:38sometime today and it wasn't batteries. Won't you get it? So come on.
- 23:41I looked it with Bonnie Kolbeck. He was the only one around,
- 23:45but it was nothing. An envelope. Yeah, full of keys. Thanks
- 23:49very much for your help, Plume. But I'm in a hurry, and
- 23:52just so I'll be sure to see you later. Good night. I ran
- 23:57out of my car, piled in and I did straight out Santa Monica Philocienaga,
- 24:00and when I got with inside of the dark cabinets entrance to Hippolynks underground
- 24:04storage garage. I slowed down and looked for a phone that I could use
- 24:07to call Matthews and still keep an eye on the garage. Because the way
- 24:11things stood now, I couldn't afford to miss a lick. But then I
- 24:14got a break. I decided to try a mobile gas station on the corner
- 24:17when the scream of a siren shoved me up against the curb and a squad
- 24:19cas swerved out from a side street ground to a robber burning stop in front
- 24:22of the garage and discauged Matthews himself and the driver on the devil. I
- 24:26slammed out of my coop and belt it across the street after him. Matthews,
- 24:30Hey, Matthews, we got it down inside there. You just wait
- 24:36a minute. Wait a minute, Matthews, you got to steal all wrong.
- 24:37No, we haven't. I got two Mountain back. He's trapped.
- 24:40We'll get him. Hold everything. Matthews listening to me. I'm going down
- 24:42there and talked to him. I'll be back in a minute. Kovac,
- 24:47this is Mallow, Come on out. I got all the answers now,
- 24:49Bonnie. I just had to talk with Plume, and I got a lot
- 24:52of truth out of him. Come on, Bonnie, you're not helping anything.
- 24:55Help kill it you all right, that's my shoulder. Matthews. Oh,
- 25:02I know this should happened sometime. No, don't shoot, don't come
- 25:07my arm. Listen, Matthews, Kobak didn't do it. The shot that
- 25:11got me came from back there on the other side. Yeah, that's it,
- 25:15Pete for the back there there he is, Matthews. That's the boy,
- 25:18right. Yeah, Hippo Link, second, Lieutenant, is your killing
- 25:21toplank stop? I got him, Phil, he's done. Yeah. Yeah,
- 25:30that's that's one nice thing about Hippo. You can't you can't miss him.
- 25:36Thanks. I think I bettersten down a minute. Oh hello mall oh
- 25:52great great. Yeah. You can't beat these hospital beds for comfort, Lieutenant.
- 25:56I'm getting one from my apartment. You can crank it into thy different
- 26:00positions, you know. Then. Yeah, yeah, I know. The
- 26:03doc says you got off with a flesh wold. You're pretty lucky. Phil,
- 26:08and I just stopped by to tell you they saved Hippo Link. So
- 26:11he'll have to be tried. There won't be much though he's already admitted everything.
- 26:15What about Plume? Do you get anything so Groggy Odin knew his own
- 26:18name when we picked him up. Yeah, it was quite a racket.
- 26:21They had Matthews Smooth Smooth. Every rich customer come into Hippo's garage left his
- 26:26house key with his cock keys was a cent to be burglarized. So yeah,
- 26:30Plume cuts a duplicate key. They find out when the people are away,
- 26:32and that's all they need. And some said up the chill backfired On
- 26:36the tonight, Hammo went to a lot of trouble to tell Hippo that he
- 26:37was leaving town at seven, just to throw Bonnie off his trail, but
- 26:41Hippo took it is a great opening for his racket. So Hommo came home
- 26:45right in the middle of the burglary, and Hippo had to kill him to
- 26:47get our way. That's it. Oh, by the way, it's a
- 26:51friend of yours. Oh yeah, I'll get him money. And Bonnie he's
- 26:57feeling fine. Oh swell, Hi, mister Molow. I guess Ronda and
- 27:02I owe you quite a vote of thanks. You don't mean nothing but an
- 27:04explanation, Kovec, why'd you run? Well, I don't know. That's
- 27:07the way I shot my mouth off about Hamel. I figured I was hooked
- 27:10for sure when he turned up dead. Once I started running, I couldn't
- 27:14stop kept getting worse. Yeah, it's exactly what Hippo figured. That's when
- 27:17I don't get Modo. Why did he help me in the first place?
- 27:19He had to brother, Hippo knew that my best clue was an extra door
- 27:23key. They also knew that Plume Hat left a bunch of keys with you
- 27:26to give to him. He was sure that if we ever got together and
- 27:29talked about keys, he'd be stuck. But as it turned out, I
- 27:32got the same lead anyway from the key Plume made for Ronde. Hey,
- 27:36Matthews cracked me up in the middle like this, Philter, Oh yeah,
- 27:42yeah, that's perfect. Bonnie turned off that reading, lad, we believe?
- 27:48Sure? Yeah? Anything else? Yeah? You see that no visitor
- 27:53sign there? Yeah, well just hang it on the door on your way
- 27:56out. I'm here for three days, fellas the best of them. Good
- 28:00night or when I left, I nestled down with the solid comfort of clean
- 28:17sheets and quiet darkness, and my eyes were almost closed when it happened.
- 28:23The lights snapped on. A pair of efficient hands grabbed me, stabbed an
- 28:26inch of hypodermic needle into my right arm, jammed a cold hard thermometer under
- 28:30my tongue, and splashed a half a pint of icy alcohol on my back.
- 28:34Oh it was awful. But when it was over, she looked back
- 28:38from the door and smiled before she went out, a red headed nurse and
- 28:44very pretty. Only then did I notice the set of keys she'd forgotten on
- 28:49my medicine table. One was thick with the figure eight design. It was
- 28:55a darky. Just a moment, I wondered, foolishly I could get a
- 29:00hold of mister plume again some way. Just a few minutes, I cut
- 29:06it out. Marlow Go to Sleep. The Adventures of Philip Marlowe, Bringing

- 30:26many of us make sure, with periodic chest X rays that we have no
- 30:30symptoms of this dread disease. Anyone can have TV without being aware of it.
- 30:34In the early stages, there are often no signs, and yet it
- 30:37is in this early stage when it is most important for the disease to be
- 30:41detected. So remember TB can be cured if you catch it in time.
- 30:47Make an appointment for that chest X ray immediately. This is Roy Rowan speaking.
- 30:52Stay tuned now for Gangbusters, which follows immediately over most of these same
- 30:56CBS network stations. This is CBAS the Columbia Broadcasting System. Welcome back Well.
- 31:22I enjoyed this episode and the result was a nice twist and a bit
- 31:26of a pun in the title, so very smartly written. I did think
- 31:30at the end of the episode that Marlow just really didn't need to go to
- 31:34bed. Go to slate. Stop thinking about the random nurse. All right,
- 31:40Well, on to some listener comments and feedback, and we have this
- 31:45from Randy, who says, I discovered your app earlier this year and have
- 31:49worked my way from episode zero to one and fifty six, which I just
- 31:55finished listening to. It was the first episode of the case Book of Gregory.
- 32:00I cannot begin to express how happy I am to have Petri Wine and
- 32:04Harry barkelback. Harry was a natural one. The way the ads were woven
- 32:07into the shows were simply seamless and ever so enjoyable. In the case of
- 32:12Sherlock Holmes, I think the Petri Wine commercials made the later ads that followed
- 32:16significantly more difficult to choke down than they otherwise would have been had not such
- 32:22a high level of advertising quality and enjoyment been previously set. But I must
- 32:27end this email so I can work my way through the next few hours so
- 32:29I can get to some more Petrie Wine. Thanks for the wonderful podcast.
- 32:34Well, thank you so much for your email. Randy Over on the Facebook
- 32:37page, Francis Higginbottom, I think last month posted an interesting link to meetde
- 32:45heritage dot com about whatever became of Patrie Wines, and it's an interesting corporate
- 32:51story about acquisitions. Patri Wine so came a part of United Ventors, which
- 33:00was started by Lewis Petrie. Then that was sold to Allied Grape Growers,
- 33:08and then there were several other deals. It ended up United Inventors was sold
- 33:16to hub Lane, which at one point owned Kentucky Fried Chicken and Smearknov Vodka.
- 33:22And in nineteen eighty two R J. Reynolds Tobacco bought Hubelin and then
- 33:27RJ. Reynolds merged with Nibisco. Pieces of Jubilian were sold off. In
- 33:31two thousand and three, Bronco Wine Company purchased the Escalon site where Petrie first
- 33:37expanded in nineteen sixteen. The Bronco Wine Company owns more than sixty brands of
- 33:43wine, like Charles Shaw and Crane Lake. And so that's so through the
- 33:52Bronco Wine Company and their various brands, is at least where the Petrie vineyards
- 33:58continue to be sold, though the Petrie Wine brand itself is no more.
- 34:01So it's some interesting history. I appreciate Francis sharing the link and also Randy
- 34:07for a question. Thanks so much. All right, well, we'll be
- 34:09back tomorrow with Nick Carter and then join us back here again next Wednesday for
- 34:15another episode of the Adventures of Philip Marlowe. In the meantime, sender comments
