Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Brigitte Morten: Political Commentator on Darleen Tana being asked to resign again
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Right.
- 0:00Speaker 2: It is the story that just isn't going away For
- 0:02Speaker 2: the Green's former Green MP Darling Tarnet still hasn't left
- 0:06Speaker 2: a seat in Parliament despite no longer being a member
- 0:08Speaker 2: of the Green Party. She's now an independent MP, and
- 0:11Speaker 2: she has been asked again by her former party colleagues
- 0:15Speaker 2: to resign. Chloe Swawbrook says the party's delegates will hold
- 0:18Speaker 2: a vote in September, yes, all the way in September
- 0:21Speaker 2: on whether to invoke the waker jumping legislation and kick
- 0:24Speaker 2: her out of Parliament. Joining me now is political commentator
- 0:27Speaker 2: Bridget Morton. Bridget, why is it fear on us that
- 0:32Speaker 2: we are all at the mercy of what seems a
- 0:35Speaker 2: very drawn out process from the Greens.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't think it is necessarily fair or the taxpayer,
- 0:42Speaker 1: as you say, I don't think Darling Tarne is providing
- 0:45Speaker 1: any value at the moment in her elected position. The
- 0:49Speaker 1: problem for the Greens, though, particularly the Greens leadership, is
- 0:53Speaker 1: that it's clear that the party is not necessarily with them,
- 0:56Speaker 1: and so they can't actually make that decision yilaterally without
- 1:00Speaker 1: quite a lot of consequence.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Yeah, and now you're seeing there was reporting and stuff
- 1:05Speaker 2: about the Greens Pacifica one of the three most three
- 1:10Speaker 2: of the most senior Pacifica leaders, and the Greens apparently
- 1:13Speaker 2: resigning from the party in protest at the way that
- 1:16Speaker 2: they've treated Darling Tana.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Yeah, and on top of they also the treatment of
- 1:21Speaker 1: Elizabeth Kitty Kenny last year and some treatment they say
- 1:25Speaker 1: following the passing of the Fesso Collins. So I think
- 1:28Speaker 1: there's definitely a disconnect, but I think it goes further.
- 1:30Speaker 1: There was also reports across most media about the fact
- 1:34Speaker 1: that party members weren't clear in what they wanted to do,
- 1:38Speaker 1: that there was still a lot of opposition to Woker
- 1:40Speaker 1: jumping legislation. In principle, do we.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Need to change the Waker jumping legislation to me to
- 1:46Speaker 2: make it easier on parties to get rid of MPs.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Well, I think you always want to maintain a balance
- 1:53Speaker 1: that you don't want their belief of party leaders for
- 1:56Speaker 1: completely and utterly, sort of unilaterally have people kicked out
- 2:00Speaker 1: of parliament. But of course the problem we have here
- 2:03Speaker 1: is that there doesn't appear to be anyone who wants
- 2:06Speaker 1: to keep Darling Tana in Parliament, except for Tana herself.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Except Darling Tana at least she's not alone. She says
- 2:14Speaker 2: that she doesn't walk alone, she's obay them, which is
- 2:17Speaker 2: causing a lot of confusion for people. Bridget, thank you
- 2:20Speaker 2: very much for your time. We appreciate it. Bridget Morton,
