Speaker 2: Metro News meteorologist Brian Hughes says if you want fall weather, well,
• 1:49
Speaker 2: fall begins next Tuesday. You're going to have to wait.
• 1:52
Speaker 2: Continued hot today. Late-day evening showers and thunderstorms high today
• 1:55
Speaker 2: and below 90s, but it'll feel warmer than that. Low
• 1:57
Speaker 2: around 70 tonight. Tomorrow looking a little bit better. Some
• 1:59
Speaker 2: morning showers around, but should clear up by afternoon and
• 2:03
Speaker 2: should be okay for high school football tomorrow night. Highs
• 2:05
Speaker 2: into mid-80s, Brian says again. A little bit more tolerable tomorrow.
• 2:09
Speaker 2: Sunshine dry and warm for Saturday with a high in
• 2:11
Speaker 2: the upper 80s to around 90. And then showers and
• 2:13
Speaker 2: thunderstorms around Sunday and Monday temps in the mid to
• 2:15
Speaker 2: upper 80s. Download the Metro News television app. Follow Brian
• 2:18
Speaker 2: and his team of meteorologists online. Coming up, Delegate Dana
• 2:22
Speaker 2: Farrell will stop by. Never know what we're going to
• 2:23
Speaker 2: get into when Delegate Farrell's here. Road sports? Who knows?
• 2:27
Speaker 2: He'll join us to talk about it a little bit
• 2:28
Speaker 2: later on. I want to welcome to the show now
• 2:30
Speaker 2: good friends of the program and of the company, Jason
• 2:33
Speaker 2: Cottrell of Union Mission, Tom Mintern, Chick-fil-A. Jason, good morning.
• 2:36
Speaker 2: Welcome to the show.
• 2:37
Speaker 4: Good morning, Dave. Thanks for having us.
• 2:39
Speaker 2: Tom, it's always a pleasure to have you here as well.
• 2:41
  Speaker 4: Thank you, Dave.
• 2:41
Speaker 2: Good morning. Thank you both for being here. So Chick-fil-A
• 2:44
Speaker 2: has announced a big grant that's going to be going
• 2:47
Speaker 2: to Union Mission here in Charleston. $ 35, 000 Chick-fil-A True Inspiration
• 2:52
Speaker 2: Award grant. Tom, a mentor of Chick-fil-A here locally. Talk
• 2:56
Speaker 2: about this grant. It is awesome.
• 2:59
Speaker 5: I would say it's an awesome opportunity for Union Mission.
• 3:01
Speaker 5: And there's a great opportunity for us as a community
• 3:04
Speaker 5: because it starts as a minimum of.
• 3:05
  Speaker 1: $ 35, 000.
• 3:05
  Speaker 6: Okay.
• 3:06
Speaker 2: It can go all the way up to $ 200, 000. But
• 3:10
Speaker 2: we have to vote for it.
• 3:11
Speaker 5: And not that I'm trying to self-promote the app, but
• 3:13
Speaker 5: you have to download the Chick-fil-A app. And it's really simple.
• 3:16
Speaker 5: It's about three steps. You download it and you go
• 3:18
Speaker 5: on and you vote. It says Transformation Awards.
• 3:20
Speaker 2: You go on and then you just vote Atlantic Region
• 3:23
Speaker 2: Union Mission. So how long has Chick-fil-A been doing this?
• 3:26
Speaker 2: Do you have any idea? About 10 years. Okay. And
• 3:29
Speaker 2: it's organizations around the country, I guess, similar to Union Mission.
• 3:33
Speaker 2: They're just doing good things in the community. Are there
• 3:35
Speaker 2: any criteria for what kind of organizations they're looking at?
• 3:37
  Speaker 3: They do.
• 3:38
  Speaker 2: That's a great question.
• 3:39
Speaker 5: A lot of it dealing with promoting literacy, promoting feeding
• 3:44
Speaker 5: the hungry. And so those are two of the biggest areas.
• 3:48
Speaker 5: And so, of course, we know the Union Mission community.
• 3:50
Speaker 5: They definitely take care of feeding the homeless.
• 3:51
Speaker 2: We feed people. 100%. And of course, again, you can
• 3:54
Speaker 2: download the. Chick-fil-A app and go on there and vote. Now,
• 3:57
Speaker 2: can you vote multiple times?
• 3:58
  Speaker 7: Nope.
• 3:58
  Speaker 2: Only once.
• 3:59
  Speaker 7: I tried, Dave.
• 4:00
Speaker 2: Only one time crap. I tried. At least 10 times.
• 4:03
Speaker 2: I'm from Southern West Virginia. I can tell you how
• 4:05
Speaker 2: to do that if you want. But anyway. Can we
• 4:07
Speaker 2: talk after, please? Kidding, kidding, kidding. So you can only
• 4:09
Speaker 2: vote one time. Only one time.
• 4:11
Speaker 5: Now, and the dates, you can only vote until the
• 4:13
Speaker 5: end of September. So September the 1st through September the 30th.
• 4:15
Speaker 5: Got to get that vote in quick.
• 4:17
  Speaker 7: All right.
• 4:17
  Speaker 2: And so this is a minimum 30. I didn't realize
• 4:19
  Speaker 2: it's a minimum $ 35, 000. It could be up to what?
• 4:20
  Speaker 8: Up to $ 200, 000.
• 4:21
  Speaker 9: And.
• 4:24
  Speaker 2: Here's the thing.
• 4:24
Speaker 5: We're competing against other towns and other cities and other states.
• 4:28
Speaker 5: And we know in West Virginia.
• 4:30
Speaker 2: We want to win. Yeah, we're kind of competitive here. Yes,
• 4:32
Speaker 2: we are. So they've already got the $ 35, 000. Correct. That's definite.
• 4:36
Speaker 2: They got that right off the– but there's a potential
• 4:39
  Speaker 2: for up to $ 200, 000.
• 4:40
  Speaker 1: Yes.
• 4:40
Speaker 2: So when people– and I can't download the app while
• 4:43
Speaker 2: I'm on the air right now, but when they download
• 4:46
Speaker 2: the app, what will they see on their phone? Once
• 4:48
Speaker 2: they download the app, then you'll see it comes up.
• 4:50
Speaker 5: It says how to vote for Transformation Awards, and then
• 4:53
Speaker 5: you hit Atlantic Region, and you hit the– You hit
• 4:56
Speaker 5: the Union Mission button.
• 4:58
Speaker 2: It's about four clicks. It's pretty simple. Very simple. Very simple.
• 5:01
Speaker 2: So you already got the $ 35, 000.
• 5:04
Speaker 4: Jason, but, man, you could use the $ 200, 000. We're pretty
• 5:06
Speaker 4: competitive at Union Mission. There's four other organizations throughout Tennessee, Virginia,
• 5:11
Speaker 4: and Kentucky that we are competing against.
• 5:13
Speaker 2: Are there any others in West Virginia, or are you
• 5:14
Speaker 2: the only one in West Virginia? We're the only one
• 5:15
  Speaker 2: in West Virginia.
• 5:16
Speaker 4: And so West Virginians, you know, let's– Let's beat these
• 5:21
Speaker 4: folks in Tennessee and Kentucky and Virginia.
• 5:23
Speaker 2: So what sort of plans would you have? I mean,
• 5:25
  Speaker 2: you've already got the $ 35, 000. I mean, is it just
• 5:28
Speaker 2: going to just general or anything in particular?
• 5:31
Speaker 4: It will definitely help us. I will say we're lagging
• 5:35
Speaker 4: just a little bit with our feeding kids program in school.
• 5:38
Speaker 4: That's going to be a huge help.
• 5:40
Speaker 2: I mean, is that because of the economy? It's understandable.
• 5:43
  Speaker 4: The food prices.
• 5:44
  Speaker 2: It'll help us.
• 5:49
Speaker 4: In our recovery, keeping more men in our recovery, being
• 5:52
Speaker 4: able to sustain that food-wise there as well. Men's shelter,
• 5:55
Speaker 4: same thing. So, yeah, this is going to help kids.
• 5:58
Speaker 4: This is going to help adults. This is going to
• 5:59
Speaker 4: help schooling. And we're very thankful for it and pretty
• 6:04
  Speaker 4: pumped about this.
• 6:05
Speaker 2: And, Tom, Chick-fil-A is a company on a national level,
• 6:08
Speaker 2: I guess probably international level, that really believes in giving
• 6:11
Speaker 2: back to the community. That is correct. That is our goal.
• 6:14
Speaker 5: And, you know, our motto is basically our mission is,
• 6:18
Speaker 5: becoming the world's most caring company.
• 6:20
Speaker 2: So how do we care?
• 6:21
Speaker 5: We care by giving back to our communities and we
• 6:24
Speaker 5: want to be, you know, we're locally owned and sometimes
• 6:26
Speaker 5: people forget that, but we're locally owned and You know,
• 6:28
Speaker 5: we want to pour back into our community and show
• 6:30
Speaker 5: how much we care for them.
• 6:31
Speaker 2: Now, which Chick-fil-A's do you own?
• 6:34
Speaker 5: We own the one at Southridge Center and the one
• 6:36
Speaker 5: at McCorkle Avenue in South Charleston at Park Place.
• 6:39
Speaker 2: Right by the new Kroger's. How's that one going? I mean, imagine.
• 6:42
Speaker 2: I mean, it's been there for a while, but anytime
• 6:44
Speaker 2: I drive by there, man, it's just packed. And people
• 6:47
Speaker 2: have always said that Chick-fil-A should really give a master
• 6:50
Speaker 2: class on how to get people's orders, get them right,
• 6:52
Speaker 2: and get them through the lines. That is our goal.
• 6:54
Speaker 2: That is our goal. They're both doing well.
• 6:56
Speaker 5: And so, you know, we're actually at Southridge getting ready
• 6:58
Speaker 5: to do a big construction project. So we're going to
• 7:01
Speaker 5: have two drive-thru lanes all the way around. So we
• 7:03
Speaker 5: get more people through. So that's coming in the next
• 7:05
  Speaker 5: six weeks.
• 7:06
  Speaker 7: Okay.
• 7:06
Speaker 2: Now, what is your personal favorite on the Chick-fil-A? Don't
• 7:08
Speaker 2: say chicken. We know that. But what's your personal favorite
• 7:11
  Speaker 2: on there? I'm probably a spicy. I'm a spicy chicken.
• 7:13
  Speaker 7: Yeah.
• 7:14
Speaker 2: And I know I'm going to, this is like no
• 7:16
Speaker 2: pickles and pepper jack cheese.
• 7:18
  Speaker 7: Okay.
• 7:18
  Speaker 2: No pickles.
• 7:18
  Speaker 10: Okay.
• 7:18
  Speaker 9: Okay.
• 7:20
Speaker 2: What about you, Jason?
• 7:21
Speaker 4: I can never get past that chicken biscuit. I don't
• 7:24
Speaker 4: know what you guys do. I don't know what kind
• 7:25
Speaker 4: of drug you put in that biscuit. But it's got
• 7:29
Speaker 4: to be illegal. But I'm telling you, it's got me addicted.
• 7:33
  Speaker 2: They're very good.
• 7:34
Speaker 5: Our spicy biscuit is, like for breakfast, I'm going with
• 7:37
Speaker 5: the spicy biscuit all day.
• 7:38
Speaker 2: He and I are on the same page. If it's
• 7:39
Speaker 2: got spice, it's for me. That's kind of the way
• 7:41
Speaker 2: I go. And as far as the sauces go, I
• 7:44
Speaker 2: actually like to mix. Hold on now.
• 7:47
  Speaker 10: Hold on.
• 7:48
  Speaker 2: Step off, bro.
• 7:49
  Speaker 6: Sacrilegious.
• 7:50
Speaker 2: No, I like to mix the buffalo and the ranch
• 7:51
Speaker 2: kind of together. All right. So have you ever put
• 7:54
Speaker 2: the buffalo in the cheese sauce?
• 7:56
  Speaker 7: No.
• 7:56
Speaker 2: Now you're getting crazy. That will change your life.
• 7:59
Speaker 5: I like a sriracha in the cheese sauce, but the
• 8:01
Speaker 5: buffalo in the cheese sauce is also. That will change
• 8:04
  Speaker 5: your life, Dave.
• 8:05
Speaker 2: All right. What do you think? You're looking at me
• 8:07
  Speaker 2: disapproving eyes there.
• 8:09
Speaker 4: This show is just taking a downward spiral.
• 8:11
Speaker 2: Buffalo. And cheese sauce. So good. All right.
• 8:15
Speaker 4: So are we heading there for lunch?
• 8:17
  Speaker 6: What is lunch?
• 8:18
Speaker 4: Oh, you don't have time for that?
• 8:20
Speaker 2: I'm on the air.
• 8:20
Speaker 4: Well, I'll just bring it back.
• 8:22
Speaker 2: How about that? There you go. Now we're talking.
• 8:24
  Speaker 1: All right.
• 8:25
Speaker 2: So I want to ask you, Jason, as we start
• 8:27
Speaker 2: to transition now. At some point, Brian Hughes sells me
• 8:30
Speaker 2: into the fall and winter months. I know we'll be
• 8:32
Speaker 2: talking to you a lot about your different programs. What's
• 8:34
Speaker 2: new at the mission since maybe the last time we talked?
• 8:36
  Speaker 4: Finishing up a giant building project, a $ 1. 3 million building
• 8:40
Speaker 4: project for a new addiction recovery building. I remember in
• 8:47
Speaker 4: my office dreaming and planning and putting these plans on paper.
• 8:53
Speaker 4: And now, like this morning, I walk through and the
• 8:55
Speaker 4: sheet rocks up and they're painting and it is, I mean, it's,
• 8:59
Speaker 4: I get very emotional even, even thinking about it. It's really,
• 9:02
Speaker 4: it's coming together. Um, people, something that people don't understand
• 9:05
Speaker 4: is there's a high percentage of people in recovery with disabilities.
• 9:11
  Speaker 2: Okay.
• 9:11
Speaker 4: And for a lot of these folks, recovery is over
• 9:15
Speaker 4: before it even gets started because of their disability. They
• 9:17
Speaker 4: just can't navigate steps. And so this is a one story,
• 9:21
Speaker 4: fully ADA compliant, uh, recovery building.
• 9:24
Speaker 2: And, and, um, And it will be where? It'll be
• 9:26
Speaker 2: on your campus where you are?
• 9:27
Speaker 4: It's actually 705 South Park Road in Kanawha City. And
• 9:32
Speaker 4: I'm really excited. I mean, we were right there at
• 9:36
Speaker 4: the end of finishing this up.
• 9:37
Speaker 2: What's your timeline when you think it'll be open?
• 9:40
Speaker 4: Open fully will be first of the year.
• 9:42
Speaker 2: Okay. And it's something that you and I have talked
• 9:44
Speaker 2: in the past. It's something that's sorely needed. I mean,
• 9:46
Speaker 2: it really, really is.
• 9:47
  Speaker 11: Yes, sir.
• 9:47
Speaker 2: And it's a very good point. People don't think about that.
• 9:50
Speaker 2: The people in recovery, a lot of them have some
• 9:53
Speaker 2: sort of disability that may make a normal type program
• 9:57
Speaker 2: or whatever, just not not attainable for.
• 10:00
Speaker 4: Our for 30 years our program three flights of steps
• 10:04
Speaker 4: and so every day we turn two to five men
• 10:07
Speaker 4: away that want to come to our recovery but can't
• 10:10
Speaker 4: because they just can't navigate those steps.
• 10:12
Speaker 2: That's unbelievable but i bet this is going to help
• 10:13
Speaker 2: that Talk about your relationships in the community, because I
• 10:16
Speaker 2: know you can't do what you do. We talk about
• 10:18
Speaker 2: Chick-fil-A being a great partner, but you've got so many
• 10:20
Speaker 2: others out there. You don't necessarily have to mention by name,
• 10:22
Speaker 2: but there are so many others out there that help
• 10:24
Speaker 2: you do what you do at Union Mission.
• 10:26
Speaker 4: It is awesome to know that as a nonprofit of
• 10:30
Speaker 4: our size and being around 115 years, that there are
• 10:33
Speaker 4: partners like Chick-fil-A, like West Virginia Radio, that will hold
• 10:37
Speaker 4: up a nonprofit. Let's face it, we are supported by
• 10:42
Speaker 4: organizations in Charleston. that allow us to do what we
• 10:46
Speaker 4: do for the people in West Virginia. And it is humbling.
• 10:49
Speaker 4: It is inspiring. And it just allows us to be
• 10:54
Speaker 4: what we need to be or what West Virginia needs
• 10:57
  Speaker 4: us to be.
• 10:57
Speaker 2: He's going to start getting emotional again, almost like he
• 11:00
Speaker 2: does every morning when he gets his chicken biscuit.
• 11:02
  Speaker 3: Yes.
• 11:03
Speaker 2: Maybe not quite that emotional.
• 11:05
Speaker 4: I mean, that's pretty emotional, that chicken biscuit.
• 11:07
Speaker 5: And one of the things that we partnered with Union
• 11:09
Speaker 5: Mission to do was we did buckets for Buckhannon, which was,
• 11:13
  Speaker 5: you know.
• 11:13
Speaker 2: Yeah, we talked about that on the show, yeah.
• 11:16
Speaker 4: Yeah, that's why I'm kind of dressed this way today
• 11:17
Speaker 4: in jeans and a shirt because we are putting on.
• 11:19
Speaker 2: What do you normally wear? Do you not normally wear
• 11:21
  Speaker 2: a shirt?
• 11:21
  Speaker 4: I don't.
• 11:22
Speaker 2: Most of the time he doesn't. You should ask him
• 11:26
  Speaker 2: to flux.
• 11:27
Speaker 4: Normally in more dress clothes.
• 11:29
Speaker 2: Okay, I got you.
• 11:30
Speaker 4: But today we're putting all that product together that all
• 11:34
Speaker 4: of those supporters helped us raise $ 10, 000 worth of product
• 11:39
Speaker 4: that's going to Buckhannon tomorrow morning, about 8 o'clock in
• 11:41
  Speaker 4: the morning. Okay.
• 11:42
Speaker 2: So you're going to be hitting the road tomorrow morning.
• 11:44
Speaker 2: What kind of products are you putting together? Because here's
• 11:46
Speaker 2: the thing about what I've discovered, and we'll close with this, guys,
• 11:48
Speaker 2: I've discovered in covering floods over the years is initially
• 11:52
Speaker 2: everybody wants to jump in to help. I mean, and
• 11:54
Speaker 2: we are very caring people. But after it kind of
• 11:57
Speaker 2: filters through, The news cycle, and I don't even know
• 12:01
Speaker 2: when I even mentioned the flooding in Buchanan or the
• 12:04
Speaker 2: recovery from it in the last week or so on
• 12:06
Speaker 2: the air on the midday show. People can just kind
• 12:09
Speaker 2: of forget about it, but the need is still there.
• 12:10
Speaker 4: Sure it is. So the products that we have now
• 12:14
Speaker 4: are a lot of tools such as shovels and rakes.
• 12:16
  Speaker 4: They're still, I mean, it's not mud now, it's dirt.
• 12:19
  Speaker 7: Yeah.
• 12:19
Speaker 4: A lot of cleanup in their yards. We have a
• 12:22
Speaker 4: ton of the industrial size trash bags that are going.
• 12:26
Speaker 4: It's still cleaning supplies such as bleach. I mean, there's still,
• 12:29
Speaker 4: I mean, there's bacteria buildup and things that they need
• 12:32
Speaker 4: to get rid of and help clean. And so it's
• 12:37
Speaker 4: not much of, you know, they're not worried about water now,
• 12:41
Speaker 4: not necessarily worried about clothing now. It's more of, okay,
• 12:46
Speaker 4: we're finishing up, we're getting through this finish line. We've
• 12:49
Speaker 4: taken care of a lot of the mud, but a
• 12:51
Speaker 4: lot of our stuff inside still needs to be cleaned,
• 12:53
Speaker 4: a lot of our stuff. out in the yard, needs
• 12:55
Speaker 4: to be thrown away, and so stuff like that.
• 12:57
Speaker 2: All right. Well, keep us updated on that because I
• 13:00
Speaker 2: know you guys are going to be hitting the road
• 13:01
Speaker 2: heading up there tomorrow. All right. So, Tom, you need
• 13:03
Speaker 2: to download the Chick-fil-A app. Yes, sir. And then you'll
• 13:06
Speaker 2: click on Atlantic Region, and you can vote for Union Mission.
• 13:10
  Speaker 2: You've already got the $ 35, 000. That's just for, I guess,
• 13:13
Speaker 2: being a finalist or something like that. But you're competing
• 13:16
Speaker 2: against how many other?
• 13:17
Speaker 5: There's a total of five. Us, we're competing against four others.
• 13:22
Speaker 5: There's five levels, but we want to get to $ 200, 000.
• 13:26
Speaker 2: We're going to compete. Let's go for first. Imagine, I mean,
• 13:28
Speaker 2: in all honesty, don't get emotional on me again, but
• 13:31
Speaker 2: imagine what you could do if you had the $ 200, 000, Jason.
• 13:35
Speaker 2: How many people that could help? Exactly. That's what we're
• 13:39
  Speaker 2: dreaming about.
• 13:39
  Speaker 7: All right.
• 13:40
Speaker 2: Jason Cottrell of Union Mission. Tom Minter of Chick-fil-A. Appreciate
• 13:43
Speaker 2: you both being here. Again, download the Chick-fil-A app. Just
• 13:46
Speaker 2: click on the Atlantic region and vote. And they've already
• 13:48
  Speaker 2: got the $ 35, 000. Could get up to $ 200, 000 to help
• 13:51
Speaker 2: out folks here in the Kanawha Valley Union Mission. Appreciate
• 13:54
Speaker 2: you both being here, guys. It's our pleasure. Thanks a lot.

• 16:51
Speaker 2: Republican delegate from the 60th, Dana Farrell.
• 16:54
Speaker 6: Good to be here.
• 16:56
Speaker 2: For some reason, the numbers always trip me up. I
• 16:58
Speaker 2: put people in the wrong district all the time.
• 17:00
Speaker 6: Well, they changed them during redistricting.
• 17:02
Speaker 2: I think that's what happens sometimes is I'm quickly, I'm going, okay,
• 17:06
Speaker 2: what district is this person when I put them on
• 17:08
Speaker 2: one of the two shows? And I Google it and
• 17:10
Speaker 2: it's not always correct because of the changes.
• 17:14
Speaker 6: Yeah, I still have campaign signs that say the 39th,
• 17:16
  Speaker 6: you know, now I'm 60th and But I don't think,
• 17:19
Speaker 6: you know, people pay too much attention to that. It's
• 17:22
  Speaker 6: about your name.
• 17:23
  Speaker 10: Yeah.
• 17:24
Speaker 2: Well, it's just media types that really care about things
• 17:27
Speaker 2: that people probably don't know the districts of any of
• 17:30
  Speaker 2: their folks.
• 17:30
Speaker 6: I typically tell people, ask me where I'm from. It
• 17:32
Speaker 6: doesn't say, I said, northern, northwestern Kanawha County. That's what
• 17:35
  Speaker 6: I represent.
• 17:36
Speaker 2: Yeah. We'll talk about roads. And actually, you know, it's
• 17:40
Speaker 2: kind of an interesting story. I was telling the folks
• 17:41
Speaker 2: earlier about this upstairs. There was quite a backup. on
• 17:45
Speaker 2: the Carter Bridge coming into Charleston around 6.45, 7 o'clock
• 17:49
Speaker 2: or so when I was coming in, and it frequently
• 17:51
Speaker 2: is at that time during the morning rush. As I
• 17:54
Speaker 2: was sitting, Dana, and or slowly driving on the bridge,
• 18:00
Speaker 2: I noticed what highways officials have been talking about, and
• 18:03
Speaker 2: it's this pre-work that they're doing to kind of get
• 18:05
Speaker 2: ready for the big overhaul, which is going to start in,
• 18:08
Speaker 2: I guess, December or January. And I noticed when I
• 18:11
Speaker 2: was sitting on the bridge this morning that There was
• 18:14
Speaker 2: definitely something on it that kind of messed with your
• 18:18
Speaker 2: vehicle a little bit because they talked about putting things
• 18:21
Speaker 2: on there that were going to slow vehicles down. But
• 18:24
Speaker 2: if you're traveling at a normal rate of speed, you
• 18:26
Speaker 2: won't notice it. So it's not like a speed bump
• 18:28
Speaker 2: or rumble strip or anything like that. It's just something
• 18:29
Speaker 2: that you– but when you're slowly creeping, as I was
• 18:33
Speaker 2: this morning, you know, I mean, again, there was some
• 18:35
Speaker 2: sort of a backup. Lord knows what it was. uh,
• 18:38
Speaker 2: at about two to three miles an hour or something
• 18:40
Speaker 2: like that, the car just kind of shimmies a little
• 18:43
Speaker 2: bit on that. Now I could be, I'll have to
• 18:45
Speaker 2: talk to, uh, uh, Brent about that, but I, I,
• 18:48
Speaker 2: it just seemed to me kind of was like, well,
• 18:49
Speaker 2: I thought it was my vehicle. I thought what's going
• 18:51
Speaker 2: on with my, with my, with my vehicle, but it
• 18:53
  Speaker 2: wasn't that it's so, I don't know. Maybe I just
• 18:55
Speaker 2: imagined the whole thing. Uh, but, uh, anyway, that's a
• 18:58
Speaker 2: big overhaul what's coming.
• 18:59
  Speaker 10: Right.
• 19:00
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 19:00
Speaker 6: And I think that starts January 6th is the. start
• 19:04
Speaker 6: date when they start reducing the lanes. And my understanding
• 19:07
Speaker 6: is they're going to do one side of the bridge
• 19:10
Speaker 6: first and then the other side. So that's certainly going
• 19:14
Speaker 6: to make things from bad to worse.
• 19:17
Speaker 2: But it's got to be, I mean, but eventually it's
• 19:18
Speaker 2: going to be good. I mean, you know, we all
• 19:20
Speaker 2: survive the lanes, the contour lanes or whatever they're called
• 19:24
Speaker 2: a couple years ago. We all somehow made it through that.
• 19:26
  Speaker 7: Right.
• 19:27
Speaker 6: And, you know, this is, I think, a two-year... Contour lanes.
• 19:30
Speaker 2: I'm sorry, not contour.
• 19:30
  Speaker 6: Yeah, a two-year project. And that's if there's no delays.
• 19:33
  Speaker 10: So.
• 19:34
Speaker 6: Uh, I think, you know, the interesting thing is going
• 19:36
Speaker 6: to be what happens with the traffic people that are
• 19:38
Speaker 6: trying to get off and, and, and get around traffic
• 19:41
Speaker 6: by taking it coming down through North Charleston or McCorkle
• 19:44
Speaker 6: Avenue and, and alternate routes. So it's going to be
• 19:47
Speaker 6: interesting to see how that plays out.
• 19:48
Speaker 2: Um, glad to see that some of the road issues, though,
• 19:51
Speaker 2: in West Virginia are being addressed, but there's still a
• 19:54
Speaker 2: lot of work to do out there.
• 19:56
Speaker 6: Yeah, you know, we have the sixth most miles of
• 19:59
Speaker 6: roads of any state in the country.
• 20:00
Speaker 2: Now think about that for a moment, okay? That's been
• 20:03
Speaker 2: said before when we talked to Brent Walker on the
• 20:05
Speaker 2: show about that before. West Virginia... And as far as
• 20:10
Speaker 2: rankings of the states and their state roads, we are
• 20:13
Speaker 2: number six in the country. You don't think about West
• 20:15
Speaker 2: Virginia being a big state because we're not. We're number
• 20:17
Speaker 2: six in the country as far as state roads.
• 20:20
Speaker 6: That's correct. And tax-based-wise, you can flip that. In fact,
• 20:26
Speaker 6: in terms of what we have coming in to be
• 20:29
Speaker 6: able to budget toward taking care of those roads, And
• 20:32
Speaker 6: not only do we have the miles, but the topography,
• 20:35
Speaker 6: you know, they only say 100% within the Appalachian mountain range,
• 20:38
Speaker 6: which may be one of the most challenging topographies on
• 20:42
Speaker 6: the face of planet earth, really in terms of you
• 20:45
Speaker 6: got to have bridges and culverts and, you know, your
• 20:48
Speaker 6: ditches and you've got slips to deal with. And so
• 20:51
Speaker 6: it's a very challenging terrain to, you know, try to
• 20:54
Speaker 6: build and maintain roads in.
• 20:56
Speaker 2: Yeah, it is. And again, you know, I'm a person
• 20:59
Speaker 2: that lives in Taze Valley. I travel I-64 a lot. But,
• 21:02
Speaker 2: you know, if you travel around the state, there's a
• 21:04
Speaker 2: whole lot more back roads in Mingo County than what
• 21:07
Speaker 2: there is, you know, the 22 or 24 miles that
• 21:10
Speaker 2: I drive every day.
• 21:11
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 21:12
Speaker 6: Every hollow, you know, there's a road up through there.
• 21:14
Speaker 2: You know about that from where you're from.
• 21:16
  Speaker 10: Yeah. Yeah.
• 21:17
Speaker 6: We got a few of them. And, you know, there's,
• 21:20
Speaker 6: I think in everybody, you know, I'd say, Dave, eight
• 21:24
Speaker 6: out of 10 messages, calls I get contact me about
• 21:27
Speaker 6: needing something. It's dealing with roads. And so I try to,
• 21:31
Speaker 6: you know, try to make sure that, you know, I'm
• 21:33
Speaker 6: glad I'm sitting on the oversight committee on transportation because
• 21:37
Speaker 6: that's something I certainly want to be on top of
• 21:39
Speaker 6: and know what's going on. But I will say here,
• 21:45
Speaker 6: and I do always defend our Department of Highways and
• 21:48
Speaker 6: the men and women out there because they're underpaid, understaffed, underequipped.
• 21:52
Speaker 6: It's just, you know, for what they have to do,
• 21:55
Speaker 6: it's just tough. You know, we need to pay them more.
• 21:57
Speaker 6: They get people, they get somebody trained, and then they're
• 21:59
Speaker 6: hired away in the private sector. So it's an ongoing challenge.
• 22:03
Speaker 2: Why aren't they paid more?
• 22:05
Speaker 6: Well, this is why aren't our teachers paid more and
• 22:08
Speaker 6: our officers paid more. You know, that goes back to,
• 22:10
Speaker 6: I think, people, you know, talk about, you know, why
• 22:12
Speaker 6: did we support as a whole, as a legislature, for
• 22:17
Speaker 6: the data center? I know for me, you know, the
• 22:20
Speaker 6: big carrot was the revenue source on the tax base
• 22:23
Speaker 6: of those because it really come down to, you know,
• 22:26
Speaker 6: do you want to defund the police? Do you want
• 22:27
Speaker 6: to defund teachers? Or in this case, you know, your
• 22:30
Speaker 6: highways and things that people desperately, you know, we just
• 22:33
Speaker 6: have so many needs and just not enough revenue coming
• 22:37
Speaker 6: in annually to be able to address those. And that
• 22:41
Speaker 6: data center revenue was the one thing that you felt like, okay,
• 22:46
Speaker 6: maybe there's a chance here to get that done. Now,
• 22:48
Speaker 6: that being said, I've still, I got a lot of concerns,
• 22:51
Speaker 6: you know, there that we've since 2014 passed and And
• 22:54
Speaker 6: that citizens are brought up and understandably so. But that
• 22:59
Speaker 6: the initial and still, I think, moving forward drive behind
• 23:02
Speaker 6: that is the tax revenue is going to be there
• 23:05
Speaker 6: to be able to help pay for infrastructure, salaries and
• 23:09
  Speaker 6: teachers and such.
• 23:10
Speaker 2: You talked about that bill. A lot of people would
• 23:15
Speaker 2: say that even that aren't necessarily against. Well, I mean,
• 23:18
Speaker 2: let's face it, Dana, there are people that are going
• 23:20
Speaker 2: to be against data centers no matter what. Not enough
• 23:22
Speaker 2: to put down their chat GPT or anything like that,
• 23:25
Speaker 2: but there's people who's going to be against it no
• 23:26
Speaker 2: matter what, and okay, that's fine. But one of the
• 23:29
Speaker 2: concerns that people have, though, is the lack of local control.
• 23:33
  Speaker 7: Oh, I agree.
• 23:33
Speaker 6: You know, I think this is one of those things
• 23:35
Speaker 6: I always say, a lot of issues at the Capitol
• 23:37
Speaker 6: and in life in general is that the concept is great,
• 23:41
Speaker 6: but the application sometimes not so much. And I think,
• 23:44
Speaker 6: you know, the concept of what we want to do
• 23:46
Speaker 6: with data centers and, okay, yeah, you look at, you know,
• 23:48
Speaker 6: we all want our technology and be able to access it.
• 23:51
Speaker 6: information immediately and we all carry a smartphone around but
• 23:55
Speaker 6: uh uh you know and go back to the the
• 23:59
Speaker 6: revenue sources in a tax base that these things can
• 24:01
Speaker 6: generate but when it comes down okay where can we
• 24:04
Speaker 6: get these things in an ideal world we want to
• 24:07
Speaker 6: put these things on the strip mine somewhere you know
• 24:09
Speaker 6: where it wouldn't necessarily affect on anybody but um that's
• 24:14
Speaker 6: not necessarily how it goes as we see you know
• 24:16
Speaker 6: they obviously the people that build these things and operate
• 24:19
Speaker 6: them have a set of criteria they want and where
• 24:23
Speaker 6: they want to be. So that, that comes down to
• 24:27
Speaker 6: when nobody wants it in my community or my backyard.
• 24:29
Speaker 6: And I get it. I understand that. You know, we're
• 24:31
Speaker 6: dealing with citizens in my district over the Valley Link
• 24:36
Speaker 6: power transmission line, you know, and they come to me
• 24:39
Speaker 6: and like, Hey, you know, we all want our electricity.
• 24:41
Speaker 6: And when nobody, you know, they're there again, when power
• 24:44
Speaker 6: goes out, it's everybody's like, Hey, you want it back
• 24:47
Speaker 6: on as quick as possible. But, At the same time,
• 24:50
Speaker 6: when it comes to the grid and the infrastructure part
• 24:53
Speaker 6: of it, nobody wants it in their backyard. I get it.
• 24:55
Speaker 2: Talking again with Delegate Dana Farrell, I want to talk
• 24:58
Speaker 2: about sports a little bit because you were one of
• 25:00
Speaker 2: the ones that had a lot of concerns about the
• 25:02
Speaker 2: high school transfer rule from a couple of years ago.
• 25:06
Speaker 2: How are things going now?
• 25:07
Speaker 6: Well, we're just now moving into this season and a
• 25:11
Speaker 6: football season where you still have this play out where
• 25:15
Speaker 6: we– We got the legislature out of it, which we
• 25:18
Speaker 6: should have. I think it was the greatest thing we
• 25:19
Speaker 6: ever did. Let's put it back into the hands of
• 25:22
Speaker 6: the SSAC and administrators. When we say the SSAC, that's
• 25:25
Speaker 6: a broad term, too. It's not CIRM, smoke-filled dark room
• 25:29
Speaker 6: up in Parkersburg. It's out to get young people and
• 25:33
Speaker 6: wreak havoc. But it's actually the SSAC and any rules
• 25:37
Speaker 6: and rule changes that are made are done by the
• 25:40
Speaker 6: principals of all 110, 20 high schools and toss in
• 25:42
Speaker 6: the middle schools. And they get together twice a year
• 25:47
Speaker 6: instead of once a year like we do, and they
• 25:49
Speaker 6: sit down and look at rules, changes, and proposals, and
• 25:53
Speaker 6: they vote on those. And what they decided to do
• 25:55
Speaker 6: after we got ourselves out is, okay, do we go
• 25:57
Speaker 6: back to what we were doing beforehand? Do we stick
• 26:00
Speaker 6: with where we're at with the transfers? But what they
• 26:02
Speaker 6: came up with was a compromise, which originally was my
• 26:05
Speaker 6: bill that I introduced to the legislature that basically allows
• 26:09
Speaker 6: the transfers going into the freshman year and the sophomore year. first,
• 26:15
Speaker 6: because you're an underclassman at that point. It also reinstated
• 26:19
Speaker 6: the ability to transfer back to your home school all
• 26:21
Speaker 6: the way up until you're going into your senior year.
• 26:24
Speaker 6: If you're going into your senior year, then that's a no-no.
• 26:26
Speaker 6: At that point, you should have figured out where you
• 26:28
Speaker 6: want to be. So there's a little bit of transfer there, capable,
• 26:32
Speaker 6: you know, going into your early years of high school,
• 26:34
Speaker 6: but Uh, once you get somewhere, hopefully the way it
• 26:37
Speaker 6: is now, you know, you get, you get settled and
• 26:39
Speaker 6: you got to be there. So, but it's still early
• 26:42
Speaker 6: because what you're seeing even this year and some of
• 26:45
Speaker 6: the scores and results we're seeing are still the result
• 26:48
Speaker 6: of the last two years because, uh, we're transfers and
• 26:51
Speaker 6: followed coaches and such. And so you're still going to see,
• 26:54
Speaker 6: I think for another year or two, the effects of
• 26:56
Speaker 6: what had happened the previous couple of years on the rules.
• 26:59
Speaker 2: But that, I mean, again, and you've been, because of
• 27:01
Speaker 2: your background well before you got in the legislature, you're
• 27:03
Speaker 2: an educator. And you've been involved in broadcasting and things
• 27:06
Speaker 2: of that nature. You've got two or three different things
• 27:09
Speaker 2: you bring to the table when it comes to this discussion.
• 27:11
Speaker 2: That's why I respect you and why I like to
• 27:13
Speaker 2: have you on the show. But there will be people
• 27:15
Speaker 2: listening right now saying, well, it's my kid. My kid
• 27:17
Speaker 2: should be able to go wherever they want. If my
• 27:18
Speaker 2: kid's got a better chance of getting a college scholarship,
• 27:20
Speaker 2: if they transfer from high school A to high school B,
• 27:24
Speaker 2: then they're going to transfer. And they get to play.
• 27:26
Speaker 2: They may not get to play in high school A.
• 27:27
Speaker 2: To all those things, you say what?
• 27:29
Speaker 6: And I'm going to say I understand where you're coming from.
• 27:33
Speaker 6: And I think you make a good argument individually. Individually,
• 27:37
Speaker 6: all that makes sense. Collectively, then that's when we get
• 27:40
Speaker 6: into problems. And you just look at the sum of everything.
• 27:44
Speaker 6: And so individually, you can make an argument for any
• 27:46
Speaker 6: one particular case. And typically when a parent came to
• 27:49
Speaker 6: me or a situation is why they transferred their kid,
• 27:52
Speaker 6: you can sit down and, yeah, I understand where you're
• 27:54
Speaker 6: coming from. But when we look at it as a whole,
• 27:56
Speaker 6: and I think, and that's why, you know, the system
• 28:00
Speaker 6: that was even there before, and especially even now, allow
• 28:04
Speaker 6: for people, you know, you got in a situation, you
• 28:06
Speaker 6: got a special situation, why you wanted to be able
• 28:08
Speaker 6: to transfer your student athlete. Then there was an appeals process.
• 28:13
Speaker 6: And I think over seven out of 10 of those
• 28:14
Speaker 6: were typically approved. So it wasn't like, you know, you
• 28:18
Speaker 6: were locked into, you know, you couldn't do anything even before.
• 28:21
Speaker 6: And now it's even more lenient. So I think, you know,
• 28:25
Speaker 6: that I think they try to be understanding of those situations.
• 28:29
Speaker 6: But I get it. I understand why parents, you know,
• 28:31
Speaker 6: you're looking out, you know, for the best interest. And
• 28:33
Speaker 6: I wouldn't blame you to do anything but look out
• 28:35
Speaker 6: for the best interest of your own kid. But collectively
• 28:39
Speaker 6: is where we were getting into the situation.
• 28:41
Speaker 2: Well, and it just looks like, you know, sometimes when,
• 28:44
Speaker 2: and I, you know, God bless the people that do
• 28:47
Speaker 2: high school sports, the broadcasting aspect of it, you know,
• 28:50
Speaker 2: our teams here, whatever, trying to keep up with, you know,
• 28:53
Speaker 2: who is where and now all of this. These three
• 28:56
Speaker 2: guys were playing at this high school. Now they all
• 28:58
Speaker 2: three transferred to this high school. But now next year
• 29:00
Speaker 2: they're going to high school C. And, you know, it
• 29:04
Speaker 2: is– it's hard. It's almost like college athletics. It's like
• 29:08
Speaker 2: a whole new team in some cases every year.
• 29:10
Speaker 6: Oh, you make a great point. You know, the college athletics,
• 29:12
Speaker 6: you just root for a uniform. As Jerry Seinfeld joked
• 29:15
Speaker 6: one time, you just– you started at the pro level,
• 29:18
Speaker 6: now at the college level, you know, you just don't
• 29:19
Speaker 6: know half the team on any given year. At the
• 29:21
Speaker 6: college game, half of Penn State's team was Iowa State
• 29:26
Speaker 6: last year. But you see some trickle now. I think
• 29:32
Speaker 6: trying to protect the integrity of high school sports is
• 29:35
Speaker 6: the last bastion of you're there for the community. You're
• 29:40
Speaker 6: there for, you know, being a part of something bigger
• 29:42
Speaker 6: than yourself. And I think that's, I think with high
• 29:46
Speaker 6: school sports, you know, you look at you're there for
• 29:48
Speaker 6: your team, your school, your community, people, you know, and
• 29:52
Speaker 6: we talk in marketing when you're wanting to market as
• 29:54
Speaker 6: you guys, you know, broadcast high school sports and stream them.
• 29:59
Speaker 6: you know, that's an opportunity to associate yourself with something
• 30:02
Speaker 6: that people know that kid out there. They go to
• 30:05
Speaker 6: church with them or it's a cousin or a grandkid
• 30:08
Speaker 6: or something. And you don't have that in college sports anymore.
• 30:11
Speaker 6: You're just rooting for a uniform.
• 30:13
Speaker 2: Yeah, that's true. We talked about, we spent a lot
• 30:16
Speaker 2: of time talking about a housing shortage here in the
• 30:19
Speaker 2: Kanawha Valley. And we, I mean, groups like Advantage Valley,
• 30:23
Speaker 2: for example, have, I've had them on the show talking
• 30:25
Speaker 2: about the studies that they've done. We, We still need houses, delegate.
• 30:29
  Speaker 6: Oh, it's crazy.
• 30:31
Speaker 11: A lot of them.
• 30:32
  Speaker 2: Absolutely.
• 30:32
Speaker 6: And you think, okay, well, that's an eastern panhandle problem
• 30:35
Speaker 6: or that may be in the metro areas. It's not.
• 30:38
Speaker 6: And I would argue, you know, you're from Logan County.
• 30:40
Speaker 6: I'd argue there's a housing shortage in Logan County. And
• 30:43
Speaker 6: when we say that, you know, I'm not talking about
• 30:45
Speaker 6: HUD housing or half-million-dollar mansions that you may see in there.
• 30:49
Speaker 6: It's that sweet spot. What we've identified is that about $ 150, 000
• 30:54
Speaker 6: up to about $ 300, 000 right now. But that's obviously what
• 30:58
Speaker 6: the price materials can change. But that little three-bedroom, two-bath
• 31:03
Speaker 6: rancher or mid-entry or something that a starter family or
• 31:06
Speaker 6: retiree can get into. And the problem there, again, I
• 31:09
Speaker 6: go back to the same thing with our roads. Our
• 31:11
Speaker 6: topography in West Virginia prohibits a major developer from coming
• 31:15
Speaker 6: in here like they do in Charlotte or Columbus. and
• 31:18
Speaker 6: putting in 200, 300 units at a time. You very
• 31:21
Speaker 6: rarely see that here. What you do see, what they
• 31:24
Speaker 6: try to do, most developers in West Virginia will build 10, 20,
• 31:27
Speaker 6: maybe 25 units at a time. But the problem that
• 31:32
Speaker 6: we've identified and we're trying to address as a legislature
• 31:35
Speaker 6: is the upfront cost. You've got to build a bridge.
• 31:37
Speaker 6: You've got to run a sewer line. You've got some
• 31:39
Speaker 6: type of road or whatever. And you may have a
• 31:42
Speaker 6: million dollars in infrastructure costs up front before you ever
• 31:45
Speaker 6: sell your first unit. to get a return on your
• 31:48
Speaker 6: investment if you're a small developer. And so that becomes
• 31:52
Speaker 6: a barrier to entry to even try to do it.
• 31:55
Speaker 6: And so, hence, I think that's part of our problem.
• 31:57
Speaker 6: So we're working on a way to allow those developers
• 32:01
Speaker 6: to access the funds they need up front to get
• 32:04
Speaker 6: the capital they need to take care of that and
• 32:08
Speaker 6: not tie up their capital before they can start getting
• 32:11
Speaker 6: return on it from the home sales so we can
• 32:14
Speaker 6: encourage them to build more houses.
• 32:15
Speaker 2: Before we let you go, you just came off of
• 32:17
Speaker 2: interims at the Capitol. How was that?
• 32:19
Speaker 6: Always busy. I think people, if you're not sure you've
• 32:24
Speaker 6: ever been there or what it is, but they're really
• 32:26
Speaker 6: information sessions. It's not your typical.
• 32:29
Speaker 2: It's not voting on anything.
• 32:32
Speaker 6: No, we're there to ask questions. Well, there's usually a
• 32:35
Speaker 6: presentation from different groups, and there are areas like we
• 32:38
Speaker 6: just sit here. Mainly a lot of things we just discuss,
• 32:41
Speaker 6: and people come in, give us information on it. We're
• 32:43
Speaker 6: allowed to ask questions. And with that, then we're able
• 32:46
Speaker 6: to sit down and formulate, OK, you know, do we
• 32:48
Speaker 6: need to address these in legislation? And, you know, we
• 32:53
Speaker 6: just finished up here for September. We will not obviously
• 32:56
Speaker 6: with the election year, we won't have any again until December.
• 32:59
Speaker 6: And really, by that point, we'll be working on what
• 33:02
Speaker 6: our priority bills, you know, a top 10 or top
• 33:06
Speaker 6: 20 list of bills that will be priority for the
• 33:09
Speaker 6: Republican legislature moving forward. coming into the coming session. So
• 33:14
Speaker 6: these are important, and these interims are the topics that
• 33:17
Speaker 6: we look at and discuss.
• 33:18
Speaker 2: What's the number one thing for you? If you had, like,
• 33:21
Speaker 2: I can get this bill passed on day one or
• 33:24
Speaker 2: maybe two. You don't have to give me a specific,
• 33:27
Speaker 2: but what would it involve? Well, I could give you
• 33:31
Speaker 2: a top five probably. And we went over some.
• 33:34
Speaker 6: I think economic development opportunities, because that lifts everybody up.
• 33:38
Speaker 6: So anything that we can work on there and that
• 33:40
Speaker 6: how for me, I've always looked at because it's something
• 33:42
Speaker 6: I know well is the housing availability and how we
• 33:46
Speaker 6: can stimulate that. Obviously, coming back, you have revenue sources
• 33:51
Speaker 6: because we just never have enough of it. Go back roads,
• 33:54
Speaker 6: what we can do to improve those education, you know,
• 33:58
Speaker 6: already has been in headlines. We need to readjust how
• 34:01
Speaker 6: we're funding our school systems to at the end of
• 34:05
Speaker 6: the day. we have to have a viable public school system.
• 34:09
Speaker 6: And right now we're trying to fund two school systems.
• 34:11
Speaker 6: We can't really fund one. So I think we've really
• 34:15
Speaker 6: got to sit down and take a serious look at,
• 34:16
Speaker 6: you know, what we're doing and how we're doing it
• 34:18
Speaker 6: on that end. And I'm sure between now and legislative time,
• 34:23
Speaker 6: there'll be a couple more issues come up. There's not
• 34:26
Speaker 6: a day, you know, I get paid part-time to do
• 34:29
Speaker 6: this job in the legislature, but there's not a day
• 34:31
Speaker 6: my phone isn't busy. I wake up, you know, with
• 34:34
Speaker 6: people needing something. and for me to address. So it's
• 34:38
  Speaker 6: a 365-day-a-year job. All right.
• 34:41

Speaker 2: that a major portion of the interstate in Charleston is elevated.
• 38:36
Speaker 2: Some of this are concrete structures. The concrete in these
• 38:39
Speaker 2: structures will fail in the future, just like Ford Hill,
• 38:43
Speaker 2: when this happens, it will be the whole bridge, though,
• 38:45
Speaker 2: not just the deck, says a texter. I do want
• 38:50
Speaker 2: to remind you of the changes that are coming to
• 38:53
Speaker 2: Metro News. Talking about the network now, nothing locally really
• 38:56
Speaker 2: changes that much. This show continues as normal as if
• 38:59
Speaker 2: this show is anything related to normal. But starting Monday,
• 39:03
Speaker 2: the morning news will be the same. This show and
• 39:05
Speaker 2: the days we do Ask the Experts, or as we
• 39:07
Speaker 2: did this morning, Ask the Lawyer, That will continue the same.
• 39:11
Speaker 2: Talk line is the same. Metro News Midday, though, will
• 39:14
Speaker 2: lose an hour, and it has nothing to do with
• 39:16
Speaker 2: turning clocks back. Metro News Midday with Amanda Barron and
• 39:19
Speaker 2: me will now air noon until 2, starting on Monday.
• 39:23
Speaker 2: Then Hotline with Weekly and Coop will now air 2
• 39:26
Speaker 2: till 5. And Sportsline will expand to 2 hours from
• 39:30
Speaker 2: 5 till 7. So again, the changes. Midday starting Monday
• 39:34
Speaker 2: will be a 2-hour show, noon till 2. Hotline now
• 39:38
  Speaker 2: 2 till 5. Sportsline expands 2 hours, 5 to 7. Again,
• 39:42
Speaker 2: all that starts on Monday. Text, the housing that West
• 39:46
Speaker 2: Virginia and the U.S. needs will not be built. No
• 39:48
Speaker 2: matter how much money and capital comes from the state,
• 39:50
Speaker 2: the housing will be built by private equity firms that
• 39:53
Speaker 2: only cater to the rich. They want to maximize profit,
• 39:56
Speaker 2: not affordable housing. And with Republicans in office serving the oligarchy,
• 40:00
Speaker 2: expect more of this. Are things more or less expensive
• 40:03
Speaker 2: than they were three years ago? Are things more or
• 40:06
Speaker 2: less expensive in West Virginia than 14 years ago? Who
• 40:08
Speaker 2: bears responsibility? If the Republicans had honor, they would admit responsibility.
• 40:13
Speaker 2: the truth, says the texter. Coming up later today, Metro

• 40:25
Speaker 2: Secretary of State Chris Warner will be stopping by as well.
• 40:27
Speaker 2: You may have seen this story. There were two candidates

Speaker 2: One of the wrestlers who will be on the card

Speaker 2: Not only is he going to join me live in

• 46:21
Speaker 2: Wonderful Classic Rock, live at 5th Street Brewing Company, Summer Street,
• 46:25
Speaker 2: downtown Charleston for Thirsty Thursday with Steve Animal. That will
• 46:28
Speaker 2: start at 6 o'clock. We talked on the show yesterday
• 46:33
Speaker 2: about the Ascend program in the state, particularly here in Charleston. Now,
• 46:36
Speaker 2: Jack Carlson writes about it, wvmetronews.com. Yesterday, a big one-year
• 46:42
Speaker 2: celebration of it at Capital Market. So for the Charleston portion, WVU, Marshall,
• 46:50
Speaker 2: in particular, President Brad Smith and his wife, Elise, Charleston
• 46:53
Speaker 2: Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin, and her administration, the Kanawha County Commission,
• 46:56
Speaker 2: the Charleston Area Alliance, all kinds of other folks worked
• 47:00
Speaker 2: on getting this thing up and running. And a year later,
• 47:03
Speaker 2: over 100 people have relocated from out-of-state places. to Charleston.
• 47:09
Speaker 2: And I love the story that we talked about with
• 47:12
Speaker 2: Mara Boggs and the folks yesterday on the show. And
• 47:15
Speaker 2: I think this young lady was actually spotlighted at the
• 47:18
Speaker 2: event at Capital Market yesterday. It was a lady who's
• 47:21
Speaker 2: a veteran, and she was living in Tampa, Florida, but
• 47:24
Speaker 2: working remotely. And Jack caught up with her, you know,
• 47:27
Speaker 2: for an interview. And she said, look, I realized that
• 47:30
Speaker 2: I could work anywhere. And, you know, Tampa is nice, obviously,
• 47:36
Speaker 2: but She wanted a little bit more outdoorsy type stuff
• 47:40
Speaker 2: in different seasons. And so she moved. She moved here.
• 47:45
Speaker 2: And just one of the success stories, again, over 100
• 47:47
Speaker 2: people in the Charleston area have loaned, have taken advantage
• 47:51
Speaker 2: of this. 100 people have moved into the Charleston area
• 47:53
Speaker 2: because of this Ascend West Virginia program. So hats off
• 47:56
Speaker 2: to Marshall, President Brad Smith, his wife, Elise, and the
• 48:01
Speaker 2: others that worked on this. Meadows is over here like
• 48:04
Speaker 2: raising his hand. Did you want something?
• 48:05
Speaker 6: Well, I was just going to say, you know, it's funny.
• 48:07
Speaker 11: This really comes home because I was having a conversation
• 48:10
Speaker 11: with a newer employee of ours in Morgantown about energy
• 48:16
Speaker 11: issues and some production we're doing.
• 48:18
Speaker 6: And guess how she got here? The Ascend program.
• 48:21
Speaker 2: It's just amazing. It's everywhere. I love it.
• 48:23
  Speaker 11: I think it's a great program. Yeah.
• 48:24
Speaker 2: I mean, there was something I think I want to
• 48:26
Speaker 2: say in this story. It's I think it was 92,000 people,
• 48:30
Speaker 2: something like that. Some big number applied statewide. I mean,
• 48:33
Speaker 2: they're basically paying people, you know, to come to West Virginia.
• 48:35
Speaker 2: And for people like this young lady who I don't know,
• 48:39
Speaker 2: Jack actually met her and talked to her, somebody that
• 48:41
Speaker 2: wants to come here, wants the Four Seasons. I mean,
• 48:43
Speaker 2: some people love the sun and the warm temperatures. Other
• 48:47
Speaker 2: people like cold stuff. I kind of like the Four
• 48:49
Speaker 2: Seasons type thing myself. And so, yeah, it's a great program.
• 48:55
Speaker 2: The Dave Allen Show on 580 Live brought to you
• 48:57
Speaker 2: in part by Morgan & Morgan with more than $ 20
• 48:59
Speaker 2: billion recovered. They believe that when you're injured, you deserve more.
• 49:02
Speaker 2: Morgan & Morgan, America's largest injury law firm. A couple
• 49:05
Speaker 2: other things in the news. The two guys who admitted
• 49:07
Speaker 2: to taking part in the shootings around the Shawnee Sports
• 49:10
Speaker 2: Complex in 2024 are now free on probation after doing
• 49:15
Speaker 2: their alternative sentencing. Antonio Jacobs III was one. Zion Clark
• 49:20
Speaker 2: was the other. They were in the courtroom of Judge
• 49:23
Speaker 2: Mary Claire Akers yesterday, and they finished their program at
• 49:26
Speaker 2: the Anthony Center. Both pleaded guilty last year to multiple counts,
• 49:30
Speaker 2: and there was a third guy in that who was
• 49:32
Speaker 2: found not guilty. This all happened in May of 2024,
• 49:34
Speaker 2: out near the Shawnee Sports Complex. Notice I didn't say
• 49:37
Speaker 2: at the Shawnee Sports Complex. It was near it. My
• 49:41
Speaker 2: big memory of that incident, as tragic as what it
• 49:45
Speaker 2: could have become, was all the social media that went
• 49:51
Speaker 2: along with it, saying multiple people were shot inside the stadium.
• 49:55
Speaker 2: Of course, it turned out that absolutely none of that
• 49:57
Speaker 2: reporting was true. Imagine that. People who aren't reporters trying
• 50:01
Speaker 2: to report the news. Anyway, you can read Daniel Wood's
• 50:04
Speaker 2: story at wvmetronews.com. Also, Kanawha County Commission is set to
• 50:08
Speaker 2: meet this afternoon. First meeting for new Commissioner Austin Gessel,
• 50:11
Speaker 2: who has been sworn in. He'll take the place of
• 50:15
Speaker 2: Lance Wheeler, who resigned to take over the Kanawha Ambulance Authority.
• 50:21
Speaker 2: We'll be in attendance for the full reporting on Commissioner
• 50:24
Speaker 2: Gessel's first meeting tonight. All right, Meadows, what you got
• 50:28
Speaker 2: coming up on TalkLine today?
• 50:30
Speaker 11: So we're going to talk about yesterday, the House of
• 50:32
Speaker 11: Representatives in Washington passed the Ratepayer Protection Act, centering around
• 50:38
Speaker 11: data centers, ensuring or helping to ensure that power bills
• 50:41
Speaker 11: will not go up. We'll continue to talk about that,
• 50:43
Speaker 11: what will happen with these data centers. Plus, we have
• 50:45
Speaker 11: an expert on today from Marshall when it comes to AI.
• 50:49
Speaker 11: Is the world ending? This conversation continues. And we want
• 50:54
Speaker 11: to talk to this expert.
• 50:55
  Speaker 2: I think it's interesting.
• 50:56
Speaker 11: The latest shooter dropped yesterday from former presidential candidate Andrew Yang.
• 51:00
  Speaker 11: who's a tech guy.
• 51:01
Speaker 2: I forgot about that guy.
• 51:02
Speaker 11: He says that when OpenAI's bots escaped, that they left
• 51:07
Speaker 11: little breadcrumbs out on the internet that they can find later.
• 51:10
Speaker 11: That's the latest shoot to drop. We'll see if it
• 51:13
Speaker 11: makes sense or it doesn't make sense. Talk with the
• 51:15
Speaker 11: West Virginia Chamber coming up on the show today as well.
• 51:17
Speaker 11: They have their 2006 economy and jobs report out. So
• 51:22
Speaker 11: we'll talk to them, see where West Virginia stands. That
• 51:25
Speaker 11: and a whole lot more Hopefully a lot of texts
• 51:28
  Speaker 11: and phone calls.
• 51:28
Speaker 2: We'll see. All right. I'll see you later today on Midday.
• 51:32
Speaker 2: Back tomorrow, again, Angie Gillenwater, Canal of Charleston Humane Association
• 51:34
Speaker 2: with our Almost Heaven Interiors. Adopt Me, Please, Pet of
• 51:36
Speaker 2: the Week, Adam Harris of Mountain Stage, AEW superstar, Speedball
• 51:40
Speaker 2: Mike Bailey will stop by, and some folks from the
• 51:43
Speaker 2: Trans-Siberian Orchestra gearing up for the December concert in Charleston.
• 51:46
Speaker 2: That's coming up on tomorrow's show. I'll see you then.
• 51:48
Speaker 2: Until then, have fun. I love somebody.
• 52:04
  Speaker 1: 580-WCHSAM, 96.5 FM Charleston, 104.5 Cross Lane, a.

Speaker 1: We're proud to live here too.
