- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey everybody. Dano here and welcome to the show. This

- 0:04Speaker 1: Patreon exclusive reviews and we giveing it to you for free.
- 0:07Speaker 1: And since the Oscar nominations have just been announced, I've
- 0:10Speaker 1: gone ahead and chosen A Star as Burns, an episode
- 0:13Speaker 1: that we were reviewed a couple of years ago, and
- 0:15Speaker 1: with Guy being a film reviewer for thirty plus years,
- 0:18Speaker 1: this was right up. He's ali. There are so many
- 0:20Speaker 1: classic moments in this episode, and it's actually one that
- 0:23Speaker 1: has one of the more interesting backstories as well from
- 0:25Speaker 1: a production perspective. So we get into all of that
- 0:28Speaker 1: and more, but just quickly, before we get into the review,
- 0:31Speaker 1: I'd love to remind you that you can support the
- 0:32Speaker 1: show for as little as just one dollar per month,
- 0:35Speaker 1: one single dollar ado per month. It all goes a
- 0:37Speaker 1: long way to ensuring we can afford to pay our
- 0:39Speaker 1: editors and buy new equipment, etc. And continue to provide
- 0:42Speaker 1: you with top quality content each and every week for
- 0:45Speaker 1: now though, thanks again for tuning in and enjoy our
- 0:47Speaker 1: review of A Star as Burns.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Welcome to Coming Attractions. I'm your host, Jay Sherman.
- 0:53Speaker 3: Thank Gil.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Tonight we review an aging Charles Bronson in Death Wish
- 0:58Speaker 2: nine Wish I was dead. Hey, but first we have
- 1:03Speaker 2: a special guest, Rainier Wolfcastle, star of the reprehensible McBain
- 1:08Speaker 2: movie Day.
- 1:09Speaker 4: My new film is a mix of action and comedy.
- 1:13Speaker 4: It's called mcpain. Let's get silly. Did you ever notice
- 1:17Speaker 4: how man always leave the toilet seat up? That's the joke.
- 1:23Speaker 2: You suck, McMain.
- 1:28Speaker 4: Now my woody Alian impression. I'm a Eurotic nerd who
- 1:32Speaker 4: likes to sleep with little girls.
- 1:34Speaker 3: Hey, never really sucked.
- 1:40Speaker 4: The film is just me in front of a break
- 1:42Speaker 4: world for an hour and a half. It cost eighty
- 1:45Speaker 4: million dollars.
- 1:47Speaker 1: How do you sleep at night on top of a.
- 1:49Speaker 4: Pile of money with many beautiful ladies?
- 1:53Speaker 2: Just ask him?
- 1:54Speaker 3: Yesh?
- 2:03Speaker 1: Do do do? Never gets thick of that music doing,
- 2:07Speaker 1: mister Davis.
- 2:08Speaker 5: We absolutely do not, mister Dando.
- 2:11Speaker 1: That's just I had of my notes. If every episode
- 2:14Speaker 1: of the Simpson started with the Iron Springfield theme, I'll
- 2:16Speaker 1: be fine with that. It just when it plays, it
- 2:21Speaker 1: just puts you in a really positive mindset. It's great.
- 2:24Speaker 1: And that sushi being dropped in the hot tub is
- 2:26Speaker 1: one of my favorite visuals and the history of Simpsons,
- 2:28Speaker 1: just Brockman's realizing the dropped in and then do just
- 2:31Speaker 1: the sheer joy and laughter afterwards, the greatest.
- 2:35Speaker 5: It's the perfect representation or recapture of just wonderful, tacky
- 2:41Speaker 5: eighties lifestyle programs in fourtainment infoertainment.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, so.
- 2:49Speaker 5: Always happy when we see Iron Springfield and always happy
- 2:53Speaker 5: to be doing Guy on Springfield.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Yeah, going back and revisiting the classics. And this month
- 2:58Speaker 1: the patrons have selected episode two F three to one
- 3:01Speaker 1: as star is Burns, arguably one of the most controversial
- 3:04Speaker 1: episodes of all time, particularly at Simpson's HQ. This created
- 3:08Speaker 1: a lot of bad blood. They were not Oh, the
- 3:11Speaker 1: majority were a fan. The majority didn't mind. But there
- 3:14Speaker 1: was one person in particular, the headhn show, the top dog,
- 3:17Speaker 1: the top billing, mister mac graney. He was not a
- 3:20Speaker 1: fan of this. He hated this one. He still hates it.
- 3:24Speaker 1: It's the episode that he tried to have stopped. He
- 3:26Speaker 1: didn't want to go to air. He went to the
- 3:28Speaker 1: press before it went to air and publicly acknowledged how
- 3:31Speaker 1: much he hated and didn't want to go to air,
- 3:33Speaker 1: and how he thought it was a bad idea and
- 3:35Speaker 1: he thought it was just product placement or just promotion
- 3:37Speaker 1: for a show that he had nothing to do with,
- 3:39Speaker 1: because The Critic was created by Al Geen and Mike Reese,
- 3:43Speaker 1: one of the I think they did the first season.
- 3:45Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure they were that were the producers for
- 3:48Speaker 1: the first four seasons, and they left after that to
- 3:50Speaker 1: pursue their own show, which is The Critic on another station.
- 3:54Speaker 1: And mac graney was not a fan of them returning
- 3:57Speaker 1: to promote their show because what happened was the show
- 3:59Speaker 1: didn't do very well well in its initial run. I
- 4:01Speaker 1: can't remember what station it was on. I apologize, guys
- 4:04Speaker 1: that the Critic I'm talking about. And the show was
- 4:06Speaker 1: also produced by James L. Brooks, who also does The Simpsons.
- 4:09Speaker 1: James L. Brooks made a deal for it to come
- 4:11Speaker 1: over to Fox, and as a way to promote the
- 4:14Speaker 1: new launch of The Critic on Fox, they thought they'd
- 4:18Speaker 1: do a ti in episode, and this was the first
- 4:19Speaker 1: time The Simpsons had ever done something like that, a
- 4:21Speaker 1: tie in with something else, and Granning just did not
- 4:25Speaker 1: want to do this at all, and I thought, I
- 4:27Speaker 1: can can understand why, But when you think about how
- 4:31Speaker 1: much dedication these two men and Brooks aside ol Gene
- 4:35Speaker 1: and Mike g Reecee how much they dedicated their lives
- 4:38Speaker 1: to giving you the best possible product, ensuring the Simpsons
- 4:41Speaker 1: became the success that it did. You know that the
- 4:43Speaker 1: sixteen hour day is just seven days a week, just bam, babe.
- 4:46Speaker 1: It was their life ensuring that this became the best
- 4:48Speaker 1: show of all time, And they just wanted a little
- 4:51Speaker 1: bit in return. And Matt Granning's like, not not fuckys
- 4:54Speaker 1: not bad idea, went to the press and given upon reflection,
- 4:59Speaker 1: it's okay, if you did like it, that's fine. That's
- 5:01Speaker 1: that's his opinion. But to go to the press steady
- 5:04Speaker 1: making it, making it all public, that just seems ridiculous
- 5:07Speaker 1: and childish in my opinion.
- 5:09Speaker 5: Kind of dickish is the first word that springs to
- 5:12Speaker 5: mind when I when I'd read a little bit about
- 5:15Speaker 5: the story. But yeah, hearing it to this degree, it's like, oh, Matt,
- 5:19Speaker 5: come on, man, you know, be a bit of a
- 5:21Speaker 5: team player.
- 5:22Speaker 1: And it's.
- 5:24Speaker 5: To the Simpsons, credit to the credits. Credit that everyone
- 5:26Speaker 5: involves credit except maybe Matt Groening's I mean they acknowledge,
- 5:30Speaker 5: oh you know, they poke fun at the fact. Look,
- 5:33Speaker 5: this is a bit opportunistic and you know they have it.
- 5:37Speaker 5: They crack jokes about it during the episode. How how
- 5:41Speaker 5: much of a bit of a tie in and a
- 5:42Speaker 5: cash in it is? So you know, they they approached
- 5:46Speaker 5: it in the in the true Simpsons fashion. So I
- 5:50Speaker 5: cannot Yeah, like you, I can understand why he'd have
- 5:52Speaker 5: an issue with it.
- 5:54Speaker 1: I think you know, the first probably the first.
- 5:56Speaker 5: Name you think of when you think of the simpence
- 5:58Speaker 5: is Matt Groening.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Right, yeah, when you think of who created the Simpsons,
- 6:02Speaker 1: it's Matt Graning.
- 6:02Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, yeah, So you're gonna be a bit possessive
- 6:06Speaker 5: of your baby, but still, man, come on, by this stage,
- 6:10Speaker 5: by season six, it's not outgrown you, but it has
- 6:13Speaker 5: become very much its own beast.
- 6:16Speaker 1: Yeah, this is the thing. I understand. You created the characters,
- 6:20Speaker 1: but you didn't really create the show. You created the characters.
- 6:23Speaker 5: James L.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Brooks created the Simpsons the TV show.
- 6:26Speaker 5: Right.
- 6:27Speaker 1: If it wasn't for James L. Brooks, you wouldn't be
- 6:29Speaker 1: living in your mansion. Matt Granning, you know what I mean.
- 6:31Speaker 1: He gave you that chance. So they just want one
- 6:33Speaker 1: little chance to help co promote their show. And it's
- 6:35Speaker 1: not like as you're saying, it's not like they just
- 6:37Speaker 1: completely took over the show. They tied it in quite well,
- 6:40Speaker 1: and they poked fun at themselves. And Matt Granning's like, nah,
- 6:42Speaker 1: and today I just thought, after reading that he went
- 6:44Speaker 1: public with it, I thought, that's it's pretty pathetic. Really,
- 6:48Speaker 1: it is.
- 6:48Speaker 5: Pathetic, but you know it's not pathetic this episode.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's funny because this episode just got panned.
- 6:54Speaker 1: People did not like this episode. They thought it was
- 6:56Speaker 1: really outside of the normal what the Simpsons was. They
- 6:59Speaker 1: thought it felt too as we were just saying, it didn't.
- 7:03Speaker 1: It didn't feel like a tie in to the point
- 7:04Speaker 1: where it was just over the top. Everyone thought, oh,
- 7:06Speaker 1: this was just an excuse to promote a show that
- 7:08Speaker 1: had nothing to do with The Simpsons, But I thought so.
- 7:11Speaker 1: I remember as a kid not really understanding exactly what
- 7:15Speaker 1: the hell was going on and why so much of
- 7:17Speaker 1: the episode was dedicated to this character that I had
- 7:20Speaker 1: no idea who he was. And then I remember always thinking,
- 7:24Speaker 1: this guy doesn't seem like a very nice person, seems
- 7:26Speaker 1: like a bit of a dick, and in never returned,
- 7:29Speaker 1: and I was like, whatever had I known? Had I
- 7:31Speaker 1: been a bit older and understood the whole point of
- 7:34Speaker 1: the episode. It makes it that much more enjoyable. You
- 7:36Speaker 1: understand the jokes like a cheap TV crossover at the end.
- 7:40Speaker 1: You know, if you ever want to visit my show,
- 7:41Speaker 1: ah no, we're never going to be doing that. Jokes
- 7:43Speaker 1: like that straight out of my head. When I was
- 7:44Speaker 1: a little kid, I had no idea what the critic was,
- 7:46Speaker 1: and you know I would have I would dare say
- 7:48Speaker 1: even people who were a bit older. The critic was
- 7:50Speaker 1: that even a show in Australia, it would have been
- 7:52Speaker 1: lost on international viewers as well, would it not? In
- 7:54Speaker 1: the night? I think so?
- 7:55Speaker 5: Yeah, to the best of mine, the best of my recollection. Yeah,
- 7:59Speaker 5: I never read on free.
- 8:01Speaker 1: I can't remember ever being on TV no. So it
- 8:03Speaker 1: was just it was a bit confusing, but it didn't
- 8:05Speaker 1: make the episode less enjoyable. Really, this episode, if we're
- 8:08Speaker 1: being honest, is probably the most ah not quote worthy,
- 8:13Speaker 1: but it's the most mean worthy episode of all time.
- 8:16Speaker 1: You've got that's the joke. Give that man the ten
- 8:19Speaker 1: thousand dollars. Just hook it to my veins. You are
- 8:22Speaker 1: the King of Kings. All these screenshots, they're like all
- 8:25Speaker 1: the fucking memes you can think of. You know, like
- 8:26Speaker 1: this episode is so it lives on so much now
- 8:30Speaker 1: in social media now. I think people at the time
- 8:32Speaker 1: just had no idea how ahead of the time it
- 8:35Speaker 1: kind of kind.
- 8:35Speaker 5: Of was absolutely the news outlet that I work for
- 8:40Speaker 5: in my day job. I can't tell you how many
- 8:42Speaker 5: times we've used the phrase, ah.
- 8:45Speaker 1: They said the quiet part loud and the loud part
- 8:48Speaker 1: quite another bit exactly. Yeah, there's so many quotes in
- 8:51Speaker 1: this episode that just are so applicable to everyday life.
- 8:55Speaker 1: And I think that's why it lives on now. And
- 8:57Speaker 1: I know Mike and Al they left at the end
- 8:59Speaker 1: of season four, came back to produce this one episode
- 9:01Speaker 1: because you know, the critic was their baby, and it
- 9:04Speaker 1: just screams classic Simpsons as a result, doesn't it that
- 9:08Speaker 1: the story itself, Yeah, whatever, but just the moments throughout
- 9:12Speaker 1: just screams Season four Simpsons.
- 9:14Speaker 5: Absolutely, it's got a terrific sense of humor. But I'm
- 9:18Speaker 5: going to disagree with this lightly in terms of the story.
- 9:20Speaker 5: I mean, we've been watching so many episodes lately where
- 9:24Speaker 5: it feels like that's a really dumb trick you're pulling
- 9:27Speaker 5: to get the to get the your inciting incident, to
- 9:30Speaker 5: get the story going to get the main thing happening
- 9:34Speaker 5: is really kind of weak. Watching this one is like,
- 9:37Speaker 5: oh no, you just ear in and out. I mean,
- 9:39Speaker 5: you know, Ken Brockwin does a news broadcast about guess well,
- 9:42Speaker 5: nobody likes Springfield. Sorry, everyone sounds like John Love's to me.
- 9:46Speaker 5: But it's like, oh, well, how are we going to
- 9:49Speaker 5: fix that?
- 9:50Speaker 1: Okay?
- 9:50Speaker 5: And you know you've got your main ideas sorted out
- 9:53Speaker 5: in about the space of two or three minutes. It's great.
- 9:56Speaker 5: And from there, you know, you can have all manner
- 9:59Speaker 5: of all manner of fun with all manner of different characters.
- 10:02Speaker 5: It's I think it's a really clever episode on one
- 10:05Speaker 5: that really takes advantage of the variety of characters throughout Springfield.
- 10:09Speaker 1: Yeah, I'll give you that. And I also remember feeling
- 10:12Speaker 1: very much like an event episode as well, because it
- 10:14Speaker 1: felt so different, And it didn't feel different because it
- 10:17Speaker 1: was bad. It just felt different because I was like, oh,
- 10:19Speaker 1: everyone's got their own short film. It wasn't really necessarily
- 10:21Speaker 1: like the Last Act isn't necessarily a story. It's just
- 10:24Speaker 1: sort of a bunch of short films and things like that.
- 10:26Speaker 1: But they're all really really funny and really well done,
- 10:28Speaker 1: and it's just I'm just I was so surprised to
- 10:31Speaker 1: go back and read so many not overly negative reviews,
- 10:34Speaker 1: but people going, eh, you know, it's got its moments,
- 10:36Speaker 1: but it's not that great. And I was like, really,
- 10:38Speaker 1: I got a lot of laughs out of this episode.
- 10:40Speaker 1: I thought it was really good. I really enjoyed it.
- 10:42Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, I think the main sort of quote
- 10:45Speaker 5: unquote dramatic cook of the episode that you know, Homer
- 10:49Speaker 5: thinks Marge thinks he's dumb, and there's some sort of
- 10:53Speaker 5: rivalry between Homer and Jason. That's that doesn't really play
- 10:57Speaker 5: at all that much. It's not there's not a lot
- 10:58Speaker 5: to that.
- 10:59Speaker 1: I would haven't really called that the major story. They
- 11:02Speaker 1: tried to sort of tap into that, but there's just
- 11:03Speaker 1: not much there is there.
- 11:04Speaker 5: No, Yeah, that's it. I don't think it's major at all.
- 11:06Speaker 5: But I think that that's like we're trying to add
- 11:09Speaker 5: a little bit of conflict in there, just to you know,
- 11:13Speaker 5: because stories new conflict. Yeah, but it does it doesn't
- 11:17Speaker 5: really add much to it. What did you think as
- 11:21Speaker 5: a crossover? Do you think they did a good job
- 11:23Speaker 5: of promoting the critic I don't think they did because
- 11:25Speaker 5: I was getting back to what I said before, where
- 11:27Speaker 5: I remember as a kid going, I don't like this character.
- 11:29Speaker 1: Seemed like an asshole. I don't know whether they didn't
- 11:32Speaker 1: give him any positive qualities Ja Sherman. In my opinion,
- 11:36Speaker 1: I've honestly, I've never watched the critic, so I'm not
- 11:39Speaker 1: sure what he's like on that show. But you've got
- 11:41Speaker 1: to give the character some sort of liability to make
- 11:43Speaker 1: people go, I want to see more of that guy.
- 11:45Speaker 1: By the end of it, I was like, I don't
- 11:46Speaker 1: want to see this guy on my screen anymore. He
- 11:48Speaker 1: just seems like a dick.
- 11:50Speaker 5: Look, I haven't watched the critic either. In all honesty,
- 11:53Speaker 5: I've seen you know, I was seeing little bits and
- 11:55Speaker 5: pieces here and there, but never a full episode, So
- 11:59Speaker 5: I mean, I be I'm not wholly across the tone
- 12:02Speaker 5: of the show. I think it's probably a bit more
- 12:05Speaker 5: grown up adult.
- 12:07Speaker 1: Yeah, people who are watching The Simpsons. I just don't
- 12:09Speaker 1: think the Critic was ever going to work as a crossover
- 12:12Speaker 1: because as an eight year old watching The Simpsons, I
- 12:14Speaker 1: was like, who is this guy? And why do I care?
- 12:17Speaker 5: Yeah, I hate when I use the term sophisticated about
- 12:20Speaker 5: the critic I'm not saying them that The Simpsons is
- 12:23Speaker 5: just dumb, but I think the critic sort of relies
- 12:27Speaker 5: on a few more references that might go over a
- 12:30Speaker 5: lot of people's heads, or based on what I've seen
- 12:33Speaker 5: of it, I feel.
- 12:34Speaker 1: Like the critic. To me, this seems like the Critic
- 12:35Speaker 1: would be a show that applies to the comic book
- 12:37Speaker 1: Guys of the World. Yeah, you're sort of you, you're snarky.
- 12:41Speaker 1: But saying that though, I like Seinfeld because I like
- 12:43Speaker 1: how they say what I think without things I would
- 12:47Speaker 1: never actually say, but things that I think, you know
- 12:49Speaker 1: that the negative aspect of life and what you think
- 12:51Speaker 1: of other people. But I just I don't know. I
- 12:53Speaker 1: feel like watching his first episode when I was a kid,
- 12:55Speaker 1: I didn't like it, didn't like him. I watch it
- 12:58Speaker 1: now and at the end of us sort of went
- 13:00Speaker 1: I think Jay Sherman is someone that I can relate
- 13:02Speaker 1: to now, and I think I would want to see
- 13:04Speaker 1: more of him now. I think if they gave us
- 13:06Speaker 1: more of what he did on his show, because he
- 13:09Speaker 1: didn't see enough of him on his show, I don't
- 13:11Speaker 1: think to sort of make you want to see more
- 13:13Speaker 1: of that artist. I don't know, but do you think
- 13:15Speaker 1: that makes sense. Do you think they blended him into
- 13:18Speaker 1: the Simpsons universe? Well, what do you think overall? Would
- 13:21Speaker 1: you when you first watched this, would you have watched
- 13:23Speaker 1: the critic if they said starting next week the critic
- 13:26Speaker 1: on Channel ten? Would you have tuned into the critic
- 13:28Speaker 1: as a result? And at that stage of.
- 13:31Speaker 5: My love, absolutely, I'd be like, Oh, it seems like
- 13:34Speaker 5: a witty comedy in the Simpsons vein about something that
- 13:38Speaker 5: I'm interested in, but also with a bit more of
- 13:43Speaker 5: a little more acid to it, a little more bite
- 13:45Speaker 5: to it. Yeah, and the Simpsons has plenty of that.
- 13:47Speaker 5: The Simpsons isn't isn't done by any stretch or or
- 13:50Speaker 5: unsophisticated by any stretch.
- 13:52Speaker 1: But that's just feels it's not to appeal to children
- 13:56Speaker 1: at all. That's what the that's what that's the vibe
- 13:57Speaker 1: I get for the critic anyway.
- 13:59Speaker 5: Yeah, it's more for twenty somethings. Yeah, I think the
- 14:02Speaker 5: the audience starts at late precocious teens and but really
- 14:11Speaker 5: is for twenty and thirty somethings.
- 14:13Speaker 1: As a critic, did you like this episode? Oh?
- 14:16Speaker 5: Yeah, I thought it was hilarious.
- 14:17Speaker 1: Yeah, that's why I was just so surprised when when
- 14:22Speaker 1: I've read so much just just sort of I guess
- 14:25Speaker 1: the word to describe. The reviews of this episode were
- 14:27Speaker 1: all just like, eh, like, no one's see to have
- 14:30Speaker 1: many positive things to say about it, And I thought,
- 14:32Speaker 1: I don't know, maybe I'm going to be out of
- 14:34Speaker 1: the norm here because I wrote down a lot that
- 14:36Speaker 1: I liked about this episode.
- 14:38Speaker 5: No, I thought, I thought it was really really funny.
- 14:41Speaker 1: Hey, my favorite. So what were your favorite moments from
- 14:44Speaker 1: Staris Bands?
- 14:45Speaker 5: Oh gosh, broke out the green high lighter and there's
- 14:48Speaker 5: a fair bit on the page here. I mean, I
- 14:51Speaker 5: just love it when little supporting characters or side characters
- 14:54Speaker 5: or cameo characters that I did just show up, you know,
- 14:56Speaker 5: the reporter who's like, what a story?
- 14:58Speaker 1: I mean, what's good?
- 15:00Speaker 5: And even the guy at the town meeting, you know
- 15:06Speaker 5: when Marge first stands up and says, oh much simp
- 15:09Speaker 5: and I have an idea. This guy just says, I
- 15:12Speaker 5: is going to see something like that. That was really good.
- 15:17Speaker 5: I thought there was a great payoff to the joke
- 15:19Speaker 5: when Jay's walking through New York and Radio Wolf because
- 15:23Speaker 5: you were making fun of me, you know, he pulls
- 15:26Speaker 5: the no, no, but j hey, your shoes aren tied.
- 15:33Speaker 5: The whole bit with a I would go in for
- 15:34Speaker 5: closer look and then you got that pause, got their
- 15:37Speaker 5: paws close inspection. He's a lost.
- 15:41Speaker 1: Just a great, a great button on that gag. I'm
- 15:45Speaker 1: just asking.
- 15:48Speaker 5: And just and also how Jay introduced himself when you
- 15:50Speaker 5: first see his show, and I am Jay Sherman.
- 15:57Speaker 1: How much of yourself do you see in j Sherman?
- 16:01Speaker 1: Is that like your stereotype what people think film critics arelike?
- 16:04Speaker 1: What do you see in the character of Ja Shoman
- 16:06Speaker 1: from what you saw?
- 16:07Speaker 5: I think that's the stereotype of what people think it's like,
- 16:12Speaker 5: and maybe it is for I think if you're going
- 16:14Speaker 5: to be a TV critic a film you know, a
- 16:16Speaker 5: movie critic on TV, like your your Roger Eberts or
- 16:19Speaker 5: your Gene Shallott's in the US. I mean we had
- 16:22Speaker 5: David Margaret here in Australia and they were a bit different.
- 16:25Speaker 5: I mean, they were very well, they were very Australian.
- 16:27Speaker 5: I mean they weren't sort of like the movie critics
- 16:31Speaker 5: on TV in the States, based on my exposure to them,
- 16:34Speaker 5: are usually kind of showman types, are larger than life
- 16:38Speaker 5: personality types, so they had to have a bit of
- 16:41Speaker 5: a either Oh that wacky person with their wacky opinions
- 16:45Speaker 5: or oh wow, and wonder how they're going to sledge
- 16:47Speaker 5: them this week or something along those lines. I mean
- 16:49Speaker 5: you're not really getting in depth film analysis and criticism.
- 16:53Speaker 5: You're getting like a two minute a three minute SoundBite,
- 16:58Speaker 5: you know, during a section of the Today Show or
- 17:00Speaker 5: something like that.
- 17:02Speaker 1: And as opposed as opposed to who was your hero
- 17:04Speaker 1: from the from the seventies and eighties? Did the Midday Show? Oh?
- 17:08Speaker 1: Ivan Hutchinson? Yeah, yeah, I mean he was very low key.
- 17:11Speaker 5: Yeah. I mean there were two guys in Australia who
- 17:14Speaker 5: were doing who were you know movie presenters on TV?
- 17:18Speaker 5: Ivan Hutchinson, who was, yeah, just a really sort of
- 17:21Speaker 5: low key dude, and Bill Collins, who was also he
- 17:24Speaker 5: was a bit more of the Even even doing this,
- 17:29Speaker 5: I'm over hyping him, but he was the golden years
- 17:32Speaker 5: of Hollywood. I mean he was more like, oh, yeah,
- 17:36Speaker 5: he's that eccentric uncle who knows a shit tone about
- 17:38Speaker 5: movies and will always tell you about them. And he
- 17:41Speaker 5: wasn't even he wasn't over the top. He was just
- 17:43Speaker 5: kind of really loved movies and it came through.
- 17:46Speaker 1: I really enjoyed the the sound effect used for the
- 17:49Speaker 1: football hitting the groin, I thought was just perfection.
- 17:52Speaker 5: Just that.
- 17:55Speaker 1: He can't sort of you can't say it, just you
- 17:57Speaker 1: can't make that sound like the sound that they use.
- 17:59Speaker 1: It's just so good. But Homer is absolute glee. After
- 18:02Speaker 1: watching for the first time and saying, give that many
- 18:04Speaker 1: ten thousand dollars that laugh from Dan, it just gets
- 18:07Speaker 1: me every time.
- 18:07Speaker 5: I think it's amazing. I love how you know you
- 18:10Speaker 5: can see the people around him. I think there's a
- 18:11Speaker 5: guy on the right hand side of the screen, some
- 18:14Speaker 5: redhead guy with the mustaches sort of doing the side
- 18:17Speaker 5: out of homes, like, oh god, this baffoon.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Yeah, but it's just so good. And another quote that
- 18:21Speaker 1: we forgot to mention earlier that gets used a lot
- 18:23Speaker 1: in real life now is I was saying buns of course. Yeah,
- 18:26Speaker 1: this episode had so much to that's just lived on
- 18:30Speaker 1: and you know, at the time maybe people didn't like it,
- 18:32Speaker 1: but man, tell me, in episodes that's had more moments
- 18:35Speaker 1: that get used every day on social media than more
- 18:38Speaker 1: than this one. I can't I don't think there is one.
- 18:40Speaker 5: I can't think of any off the top of my head.
- 18:42Speaker 5: But yeah, there's just there are so many that are
- 18:44Speaker 5: either lifted out in meme form or have just entered
- 18:47Speaker 5: the everyday vocabulary.
- 18:49Speaker 1: Next question, you there eating the beast. All right, mister Davis,
- 18:53Speaker 1: It is time for some trivia for a star as Burns.
- 18:56Speaker 1: I think we should probably read out some patron shot out.
- 18:58Speaker 1: So what do you reckon? I think you should do
- 19:01Speaker 1: that because you're so good at it, and they so
- 19:03Speaker 1: deserve it. They so do deserve it, particularly our twenty
- 19:05Speaker 1: dollars patients. Think I read our twenty dollar patrons today,
- 19:07Speaker 1: starting with none other than Jonathan Rossi, as well as
- 19:12Speaker 1: Jared Howard At, Christopher Trent Darby, Andrew Zr, Jordan Moleman,
- 19:16Speaker 1: Richie Steamham Champion, Dylan Haggett, Hanks Scorpio, Kevin Dental, Planned Flood,
- 19:21Speaker 1: Zach Pruett, Timothy Burlson, Joel Yolande, Kati g Daniel Kotnick,
- 19:26Speaker 1: Shannon Hofer, Rhys Roberts, George Mcmahermee, Stephen Roberts, Sean deVie,
- 19:31Speaker 1: Bella Winderbank, Tom Pickering, Mark Boston Burgess, Grand Sciper, Noah

- 19:41Speaker 1: and Adric McLeod. And we also have some new twenty
- 19:43Speaker 1: dollars patriots, mister Davis, would you like to hear their

- 19:52Speaker 1: You're absolute champion, as well as none other than mister
- 19:55Speaker 1: Ryan A. Dunlap, not Dunlap. I originally read it as Dunlop.
- 19:58Speaker 1: It's Dunlap, Ryan Dunlap. Thank you so much, guys. So
- 20:00Speaker 1: Ryan Dunlap and Andrew Davis our new twenty dollars patrons
- 20:05Speaker 1: here on the four figure scamp Patreon channel. So thank
- 20:07Speaker 1: you guys for your support. It does mean the world
- 20:09Speaker 1: to us. Right mister Davis, it's trivia. You hit me
- 20:12Speaker 1: with your first question, what do you got for me?
- 20:14Speaker 5: I will? Indeed, how much is Bart charging for a
- 20:18Speaker 5: Maps to the Stars homes?
- 20:20Speaker 1: It's a very good question. I've never really paid attention,
- 20:22Speaker 1: but I'm going to say something on the lines of
- 20:24Speaker 1: five dollars.
- 20:26Speaker 5: Five dollars it is?
- 20:27Speaker 1: It is five dollars. Okay, must have just got muscle memory.
- 20:29Speaker 1: I must have seen it so many times and brains
- 20:31Speaker 1: just like it's five dollars before you know this. My
- 20:34Speaker 1: first question is what is the name of Jay Shemon's
- 20:37Speaker 1: show that he hosts?
- 20:40Speaker 5: Oh? Is it at the movies with Jahmon?
- 20:42Speaker 1: No? Coming attractions? Coming attractions?
- 20:46Speaker 5: That's right.
- 20:47Speaker 1: Your next question, which Death Wish movie?
- 20:50Speaker 5: Are we up to? Oh four? We're up to the ninth?
- 20:55Speaker 1: The ninth?
- 20:56Speaker 5: Wow?
- 20:56Speaker 1: I did like the way he's like the what does
- 20:59Speaker 1: he call them? That? The film reprehensible mixin movies. My
- 21:05Speaker 1: next question is profits have dropped by how much?
- 21:09Speaker 5: That's on of mine thirty?
- 21:12Speaker 1: I thought you would have loved the spill bet spilbear
- 21:15Speaker 1: going it's Bilberg non union Mexican equivalent. That's one that's
- 21:19Speaker 1: dropped a lot as well.
- 21:20Speaker 5: That you have a bit? Uh, what is Jay's not
- 21:26Speaker 5: quite nickname for Wolfcastle? Well, what does j Corrany and Wolfcastle?
- 21:29Speaker 5: When Wolfcastle approaches him on the street?
- 21:32Speaker 1: Ah, nudnick?
- 21:35Speaker 5: Nudnick?
- 21:36Speaker 1: Now, what's that?
- 21:37Speaker 5: I know?
- 21:37Speaker 1: Obviously a plan on spudnik, But what's the no. I
- 21:40Speaker 1: think it's I think it's like a Jewish term of endearment.
- 21:44Speaker 1: But let's have a look, sh.
- 21:45Speaker 5: Okay, let's say let's look that up. Because I was
- 21:47Speaker 5: going to looking up I forgot it is not actually
- 21:50Speaker 5: a term of endearment. Nudnick is a pestering, nagging, or
- 21:54Speaker 5: irritating person.
- 21:55Speaker 1: A bore I see. I like the fact that Jay
- 21:58Speaker 1: Sherman is so much of a prick even when his
- 22:00Speaker 1: big guy's coming towards him, he's such a smart ass.
- 22:03Speaker 1: He's still just hang shit on it because he's like,
- 22:05Speaker 1: he knows that this big march a guy has no
- 22:06Speaker 1: idea that he's actually hanging shit on him. He's like,
- 22:08Speaker 1: I just realized you were insulting me, and then he
- 22:11Speaker 1: insults him straight away, and Wolfcastle doesn't realize that he's
- 22:15Speaker 1: being insult I thought it was very, very funny. I
- 22:17Speaker 1: knew it must have been something bad. My next question
- 22:20Speaker 1: is how much did that film cost where he's just
- 22:23Speaker 1: standing in front of the brick wall.
- 22:25Speaker 5: For nineteen mine eighty million dollars?
- 22:27Speaker 1: Yes, eighty million dollars correct.
- 22:30Speaker 5: My last question for you is who does Marge cross
- 22:35Speaker 5: off the list to make way for.
- 22:37Speaker 1: Homer Martin Scorsese, Oh, Marty Yeap. And finally, who plays
- 22:42Speaker 1: Smithers in US Burns for All Seasons?
- 22:47Speaker 5: It's Tommy June Tommy noted Flamboy and Broadway Musical Theater star.
- 22:52Speaker 1: All right, that is true viafore A Star as Burns.
- 22:55Speaker 1: Let's get into our review, shall we, Mister Davis, no
- 22:57Speaker 1: ad breaks on this show, because let's us for our
- 23:01Speaker 1: beloved patrons. All right. So the original aired eight four
- 23:04Speaker 1: A Star as Burns was March fifth, nineteen ninety five.
- 23:07Speaker 1: It was written by Ken Keeler, Ken's first writing credit
- 23:11Speaker 1: on the show. Well, that's actually another thing should mention.
- 23:13Speaker 1: Matt Granning was so annoyed by this episode that he
- 23:15Speaker 1: had his name taken from the credits. I did see that. Yeah, yeah, wow,
- 23:19Speaker 1: it's extreme. It didn't even appear on the audio commentary
- 23:21Speaker 1: either for the episode on the DVD's. It's just like
- 23:23Speaker 1: Matt Man.
- 23:24Speaker 5: Come on, let bygones be going bygones. Let bigones be guygones.
- 23:29Speaker 1: Surely people look back on this now so fondly that
- 23:31Speaker 1: he must go. You have to acknowledge that he was
- 23:34Speaker 1: wrong to be He's wrong, regardless of how he acted
- 23:37Speaker 1: and the way he handled the situation. But look back
- 23:39Speaker 1: now and go, was it really that big of a deal.
- 23:42Speaker 1: You may have may have exaggerated, and it doesn't really matter. Anyway,
- 23:45Speaker 1: and it was directed by Susie Ditter. Four figure discount

- 24:18Speaker 1: kicks off with, as we said earlier, Ion Springfield.
- 24:23Speaker 5: Do.
- 24:24Speaker 1: That's so makes you so happy, It's so great.
- 24:28Speaker 5: It was just so techy. I mean of the opening
- 24:31Speaker 5: credits of Ion Springfield is just chicks and bikini.
- 24:34Speaker 1: Yeah, it is just dancing the Jebedi sprint Field outfit
- 24:36Speaker 1: and stuff. But I love it when it first airs,
- 24:39Speaker 1: whenever it add on The Simpsons for the first time
- 24:41Speaker 1: and just ends up home and going wow in full
- 24:44Speaker 1: team and that's just the best. Whenever we used to
- 24:48Speaker 1: do a Simpsons trivia and I up in Melbourne. I
- 24:50Speaker 1: used to always try and incorporate a question that had
- 24:52Speaker 1: the Iron Springfield music playing, because I found whenever you
- 24:54Speaker 1: play that it just made people up and about that
- 24:56Speaker 1: were just start us so happy. Spring Field's answer to
- 25:00Speaker 1: the Benedictine Monks. Who are they Benedictine Monks? I think
- 25:04Speaker 1: there was a bit of a period where you had
- 25:07Speaker 1: these Benedictine monks who were just doing charting and people
- 25:12Speaker 1: were just like, that's really calming and relaxing. I might
- 25:15Speaker 1: play it on CD, just a chill out at the
- 25:17Speaker 1: end of a rough day. So they were a thing.
- 25:19Speaker 1: They were like a group, the Blue Man Group, but monks,
- 25:22Speaker 1: I believe.
- 25:22Speaker 5: So, I mean, yeah, not really a group. They were
- 25:24Speaker 5: just a you know, a choir of monks from Belgium
- 25:27Speaker 5: or somewhere like that, and you know, they recorded an album.
- 25:31Speaker 5: Some cool person started saying, well, this is really relaxing,
- 25:34Speaker 5: and everyone I sort of jumped on the bandwagon for
- 25:36Speaker 5: a little while.
- 25:37Speaker 1: Well, we had the rapid Rabbis here in Springfield doing
- 25:40Speaker 1: their own rendition of can't touch this, not even can't
- 25:44Speaker 1: touch this. I was like that. Homer asked if they're Jewish,
- 25:48Speaker 1: they're not so he starts eating a pig on a platter.
- 25:51Speaker 1: Then Survey says that the Springfield is the Springfield at
- 25:54Speaker 1: least popular city in the US in Science Dead Last.
- 25:58Speaker 5: I just like that.
- 26:01Speaker 1: I guess what we stink? Hey, And then they cut
- 26:07Speaker 1: to Skinner being burned at the at the stake, I
- 26:10Speaker 1: told you the earth revolves at around the sun. And
- 26:12Speaker 1: then the guy takes a photo. You've stolen my soul,
- 26:14Speaker 1: as Grandpa says. Then Culture Dead Last, Crusty performing the
- 26:18Speaker 1: stage show in the wheelchair, gets out of the chair speakreveled.
- 26:22Speaker 1: Then the family I actually had to hear my notes.
- 26:24Speaker 1: So this episode, this story was taken straight off almost
- 26:28Speaker 1: bit for bit from the episode we reviewed a couple
- 26:30Speaker 1: of weeks ago and fourthing a discount. There's something about
- 26:31Speaker 1: marrying tourism goes down. Oh yeah, and they have a
- 26:34Speaker 1: town hall meeting asking how they can fix tourism. That
- 26:37Speaker 1: is exactly what happens in that episode. Ten seasons later,
- 26:42Speaker 1: why did you ever hold another film festival? Yeah? I
- 26:46Speaker 1: died to make that an annual event. Yeah, it's just crazy.
- 26:48Speaker 1: They literally just rehashed this story. But fine, whatever it worked.
- 26:52Speaker 1: I didn't pick up on it at the time. But yeah,
- 26:53Speaker 1: it just it was so blatant. When I revisited this one, I.
- 26:56Speaker 5: Think it'd be hilarious. I mean, you know they do
- 26:58Speaker 5: a Treehouse of Horror every year. I mean you do
- 27:00Speaker 5: one of these every four or five years or something. Fun.
- 27:03Speaker 5: Guess what we're holding another film festival. We don't have
- 27:04Speaker 5: to bring Jay Sherman back. But actually you get some
- 27:08Speaker 5: other don't really they don't know if they have film
- 27:10Speaker 5: critics on TV anymore, but or some YouTube guy.
- 27:13Speaker 1: The closest thing now is just I don't know that
- 27:16Speaker 1: movies to have like e yeah, what was it? The
- 27:20Speaker 1: the thing for that I've sitt on the podcast before it.
- 27:22Speaker 5: Is to love it entertainment tonight.
- 27:30Speaker 1: I wonder if I on Springfield was based on that,
- 27:31Speaker 1: you'd have to think so right.
- 27:33Speaker 5: I think there was just all manner of like local yeah,
- 27:37Speaker 5: you know today in La or something like that.
- 27:41Speaker 1: I just can't happen to do air guitar whenever I
- 27:43Speaker 1: on Springfield's playing. This makes me so happy.
- 27:46Speaker 5: Yeah, but you do a Springfield Film Festival episode every
- 27:50Speaker 5: you know, five or six seasons or something, and different
- 27:53Speaker 5: characters making their own, different little movies and things like that.
- 27:55Speaker 5: It's an interesting way to shake it up.
- 27:57Speaker 1: Yeah, getting back to them, there's something about marrying. They
- 28:00Speaker 1: even have the exact same joke. So when Lisa, Lisa
- 28:03Speaker 1: is the one who says, oh no, too is going
- 28:05Speaker 1: to go down in there's something about marrying home and goes,
- 28:08Speaker 1: oh no, what about my what about my maps two
- 28:10Speaker 1: stars homes? But here what about my maps to stars homes?
- 28:13Speaker 1: I'm like, this is the exact same joke. They literally
- 28:17Speaker 1: copied this episode. Bart's here He's got maps to movie
- 28:22Speaker 1: stars homes, and it's He's got Moe's houses. Drew Barrymore,
- 28:26Speaker 1: Are you Drew Barrymore? What? I'm hungover?
- 28:29Speaker 5: Hungover?
- 28:31Speaker 1: They didn't have the town hall meeting?
- 28:34Speaker 6: Are there any suggestions for how to attract more tourism?
- 28:39Speaker 3: The easiest way to be popular is to leach off
- 28:42Speaker 3: the popularity of others, So we proposed changing our name
- 28:46Speaker 3: from Springfield to Seinfeld.
- 28:51Speaker 7: I may be just a boy, but I have an idea.
- 28:54Speaker 7: If I may, I'd like to show you a few slides.
- 28:56Speaker 7: Here's Springfield as it appears from space somewhere in this week.
- 29:00Speaker 7: Valley is the lost Dutchman's mind.
- 29:02Speaker 6: Young man that appears to be a picture of your
- 29:04Speaker 6: rear end song.
- 29:06Speaker 3: Sutters.
- 29:10Speaker 1: Lot.
- 29:10Speaker 7: This is the last time I use an escape plan
- 29:12Speaker 7: devised by Millhouse.
- 29:14Speaker 4: Sorry, bart I'm.
- 29:16Speaker 3: Marge Simpson and I have an idea.
- 29:19Speaker 2: Oh March is gonna say something now.
- 29:22Speaker 8: I know you haven't liked some of my past suggestions,
- 29:25Speaker 8: like switching to the metric system.
- 29:28Speaker 6: The metric system is the tour of the devil my
- 29:31Speaker 6: cargage forty rods to the hots head, and that's the
- 29:35Speaker 6: way I liked it. The old persions from March will
- 29:38Speaker 6: be stricken from the record who said that.
- 29:41Speaker 3: But my new idea is different.
- 29:43Speaker 8: I think we should hold a film festival and give
- 29:46Speaker 8: out prizes.
- 29:47Speaker 3: Could we make our own movies and enter them? Yes,
- 29:50Speaker 3: last an excuse to wear makeup.
- 29:53Speaker 6: All in favor of Marge Simpson's film festival idea like
- 29:59Speaker 6: my idea.
- 30:00Speaker 3: Actually I have several others.
- 30:07Speaker 1: But then, as you were saying, they got straight into it.
- 30:10Speaker 1: So as soon as we have this scene, straight into
- 30:12Speaker 1: Barton filming. He is the eternal struggle relax fit my
- 30:15Speaker 1: aunt Fanny. He can't fit into his pants. We've all
- 30:17Speaker 1: been there where we've We've got like a favorite pair
- 30:19Speaker 1: of pants and they get a little bit tight. And
- 30:21Speaker 1: you're like, oh no, some wheat or bay new pants.
- 30:27Speaker 1: I don't want to do that, and Flanders and then
- 30:29Speaker 1: filming Todd is Todd, Yeah, Ted his baby Moses in
- 30:33Speaker 1: the How big must that basket be? By the way,
- 30:37Speaker 1: and like more is like picking him up, put him
- 30:39Speaker 1: in the water. I'm like this, this Todd is not
- 30:41Speaker 1: a baby. But he flies off down the river straight away.
- 30:47Speaker 1: I really liked the shot of as soon as Todd
- 30:50Speaker 1: takes off, it cuts to Rod and Flanner's just looking
- 30:52Speaker 1: at it, and it's just that visual of oh fuck,
- 30:57Speaker 1: and he flies fround he praised to God. I feel
- 31:00Speaker 1: like if this joke was used in a modern day episode,
- 31:02Speaker 1: people would hang shit on it when he praise to God,
- 31:04Speaker 1: God say today thanks God, or could do It's so unrealistic,
- 31:08Speaker 1: but it just, you know, back then it didn't seem
- 31:11Speaker 1: to bother us, but now it was bother us though
- 31:14Speaker 1: it shouldn't. But Marge is now looking for a critic
- 31:17Speaker 1: and it's six hundred critics on TV, which goes to
- 31:20Speaker 1: show that the sign of the time six hundred critics
- 31:22Speaker 1: on TV, and that probably was true. There probably were
- 31:24Speaker 1: a lot of critics on TV. But now as you're
- 31:26Speaker 1: saying it'd be hard to find any I guess just
- 31:28Speaker 1: the Internet killed that, right, social media killed that. What
- 31:31Speaker 1: do you think was the biggest killer of the Internet,
- 31:32Speaker 1: or just social media in or just the Internet in general.
- 31:35Speaker 5: Oh, the Internet in general, because I mean you look
- 31:37Speaker 5: on YouTube and there's plenty there's plenty of you know,
- 31:41Speaker 5: sort of amateur critics.
- 31:44Speaker 1: Just randoms, just filming themselves. I've never got the whole
- 31:48Speaker 1: reaction video thing.
- 31:49Speaker 5: Oh no, I don't get that at all.
- 31:51Speaker 1: It's just like it was like someone sent me your
- 31:53Speaker 1: links saying you gotta watch this guy watch the Geelong
- 31:55Speaker 1: Grand Final, And I'm like, do I We're how excited
- 31:58Speaker 1: to get to when he kicks the goal? Like, yeah,
- 32:01Speaker 1: he's a fan of Geelong, he should be excited. I
- 32:04Speaker 1: don't get why watching some and it's literally like you
- 32:07Speaker 1: can't even see the game when you're watching it. You're
- 32:08Speaker 1: just watching a guy looking at his computer screen. I'm like, why,
- 32:13Speaker 1: why have six hundred thousand people watched this? I don't
- 32:16Speaker 1: get it. Clouds, what is this?
- 32:21Speaker 5: No, it makes zero sense to me. Yeah. Yeah, but
- 32:23Speaker 5: I mean there would have been a stage where, you know,
- 32:25Speaker 5: all your regional TV stations or your small town stations
- 32:28Speaker 5: probably had you know, now it's time for someone is
- 32:31Speaker 5: opening this week, and here's our movie reviewer to talk
- 32:34Speaker 5: about it. Probably getting paid peanuts or just getting free
- 32:37Speaker 5: movie tickets or something like that. But yeah, a lot
- 32:38Speaker 5: of the so many stations have had their own movie guy.
- 32:42Speaker 1: And Leonard Malton is mentioned here, the best looking on TV,
- 32:45Speaker 1: who appears in Mega Streisand the second last episode I
- 32:48Speaker 1: want to say of south Park season one, which we
- 32:51Speaker 1: reviewed on our south Park podcast, Going Down to south Park.
- 32:54Speaker 1: So if you're a patron and you haven't checked out
- 32:56Speaker 1: that podcast yet, check it out. Guarantee you'll enjoy it.
- 32:59Speaker 1: The more guying down to In your ears, she sees
- 33:01Speaker 1: Jay Sherman on his show Coming Attractions and his Air
- 33:04Speaker 1: with Ray near wolf Castle discussing the reprehensible McBain movies.
- 33:08Speaker 1: And then they's what's the new movie called again? Number
- 33:10Speaker 1: nine of what it's death Wish, Death Wish okay, and
- 33:13Speaker 1: it's just him making jokes, doing stand up in front
- 33:16Speaker 1: of a brick wall.
- 33:17Speaker 5: Oh so no, no, well, yeah there's the death Witch
- 33:19Speaker 5: movie with Charles Bronson in the bed.
- 33:21Speaker 1: Oh sorry, yes, I wish, I was like I wish. Yeah,
- 33:25Speaker 1: no days, and.
- 33:27Speaker 5: Then it's McBain, let's let's get silly, let's get silly.
- 33:31Speaker 1: Of course it is, of course it is. What do
- 33:32Speaker 1: you think? And dandover it just yeah, that's the joke.
- 33:35Speaker 1: That is probably the most ued Simpson's meme, right, like
- 33:39Speaker 1: that or Homer in the Hedges.
- 33:41Speaker 5: I think it's Homer in the Hedges in all honesty,
- 33:43Speaker 5: and I think that's but.
- 33:44Speaker 1: That is quote quote wise though, like that's for the
- 33:46Speaker 1: visual something that's just a quote. What do you reckon?
- 33:49Speaker 5: I'm always inclined to say, booms you reckon?
- 33:52Speaker 1: I reckon. That's the joke is every time somebody misunderstand something,
- 33:55Speaker 1: and it's I love it when I'm the first person
- 33:57Speaker 1: to do it too. I love it when I've got
- 33:58Speaker 1: someone I'm like, cool, he's a good chance to use.
- 34:00Speaker 1: That's the joke. Yeah, burn, it's even better when you
- 34:05Speaker 1: go back two minutes later and you realize the deleted
- 34:07Speaker 1: their comment. You're like, I still got it. Then he
- 34:12Speaker 1: does his Woody Yellen impression during the stand up. And
- 34:15Speaker 1: speaking of Woodyellen, he appears in the latter episode of
- 34:17Speaker 1: Talking Seinfeld. Well, he doesn't appear, but he's he's filming
- 34:20Speaker 1: a movie in New York where he gives Cramey the
- 34:22Speaker 1: role where he has the speaking line of these petzels
- 34:25Speaker 1: are making me thirsty. We've just reviewed that. It's not
- 34:27Speaker 1: quite up on the Patreon channel yet, but it's going
- 34:29Speaker 1: to be up very very soon. So if you like
- 34:31Speaker 1: yourself from Seinfeld and you haven't listened to that one
- 34:33Speaker 1: yet and you're a patron, what are you doing? Check
- 34:35Speaker 1: that out as well. Dano, you are a spooking machine.
- 34:38Speaker 1: Just ties into here in the Forefinger Discount universe. And
- 34:41Speaker 1: then Homer thinks that when Lisa says, I think it's
- 34:44Speaker 1: Lisa who's describing Jay, he thinks it's them describing him.
- 34:48Speaker 5: My ears are burning.
- 34:50Speaker 1: No, no, you dad, Oh my ears a burning.
- 34:53Speaker 5: Let a cute bond fire and see what was happening
- 34:55Speaker 5: in his ear.
- 34:56Speaker 1: Marge then writes the letter to j.
- 34:58Speaker 8: Dear mister san On behalf of the people of Springfield.
- 35:01Speaker 8: I would like to invite you to judge our film festival.
- 35:05Speaker 3: You can stay with us and enjoy the sights and
- 35:07Speaker 3: sounds of the country.
- 35:09Speaker 6: Merge just a pimple or a boil, just a man at.
- 35:11Speaker 3: Homer, look what you made me?
- 35:13Speaker 7: Right?
- 35:14Speaker 8: Anyway, we think you'll really enjoy our quiet little town.
- 35:17Speaker 3: Sincerely, Marge Simpson, Do.
- 35:20Speaker 2: I really want to leave Manhattan?
- 35:23Speaker 1: Sermon? I just realized you insulted me. Now you were
- 35:27Speaker 1: to die?
- 35:27Speaker 5: Eh?
- 35:28Speaker 3: Hey not neck?
- 35:29Speaker 2: Your shoes untied?
- 35:30Speaker 4: From here they appear to be tied. But I will
- 35:33Speaker 4: go in for a close or look.
- 35:36Speaker 2: Taxi to the airport.
- 35:42Speaker 1: On Grelosa inspection. These are loafers. We come back from
- 35:49Speaker 1: commercial and the graffiti plane arrives, cuts off the one
- 35:51Speaker 1: from New York. Hey, I'm landing here. Homer then holds
- 35:56Speaker 1: up the Simpson sign. It's just your typical Homer is
- 35:59Speaker 1: dumb moment keeps rewriting Simpson and.
- 36:02Speaker 5: Then again rule threes again.
- 36:04Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, the payoff to the piople or a boil.
- 36:07Speaker 1: It was a gummy bear. So right off the bat
- 36:09Speaker 1: here they're trying to establish that Jay. I'm going to say,
- 36:13Speaker 1: I think Jay thinks he's more superior than anybody, but
- 36:15Speaker 1: more superior than Homer.
- 36:16Speaker 5: What do you reckon?
- 36:17Speaker 1: Not particularly in this moment here, but it's setting up
- 36:20Speaker 1: the I don't know that, yeah, same, Maybe it's just
- 36:23Speaker 1: maybe it's just John Loved's voice. I don't know, But
- 36:25Speaker 1: do you think It's Loved's voice plays a big part
- 36:27Speaker 1: in the snewedness of Jay Sherman. It absolutely does.
- 36:31Speaker 5: But I think you know the thing about Jay Sherman
- 36:33Speaker 5: is he's also probably fairly insecure to the point of
- 36:39Speaker 5: rock bottomed self esteem.
- 36:40Speaker 1: Balding, middle aged, fat white man short.
- 36:43Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, he's you know, he's commenting on stuff rather
- 36:46Speaker 5: than actually creating stuff for all that kind of business.
- 36:48Speaker 5: You know, Rainian Wolfcastle doesn't call him out, But how
- 36:52Speaker 5: do you slip in that? On a bed of on
- 36:55Speaker 5: a big bottle of Money's arounded by beautiful ladies who
- 37:00Speaker 5: who wouldn't rather have that? So I think if Jay
- 37:02Speaker 5: finds the opportunity is like, oh here's someone I'm legitimately
- 37:05Speaker 5: better than, you know, he's really gonna sort of loud
- 37:08Speaker 5: it over coming.
- 37:10Speaker 1: Up next, The Flintstones meet the Jetsons.
- 37:13Speaker 7: Uh oh, I smell another cheap cartoon crossover.
- 37:16Speaker 6: Bright Tip didn't meet Jay Sherman the critic.
- 37:20Speaker 7: Hello, hey man, I really love your show. I think
- 37:22Speaker 7: our kids should watch it. I suddenly feel so dirty.
- 37:27Speaker 1: It's important. I think when you're doing a crossover that
- 37:29Speaker 1: you acknowledge it in some way and take the mickey
- 37:31Speaker 1: out of yourself at the same time.
- 37:33Speaker 5: I reckon, So I think you have to, don't you.
- 37:35Speaker 1: You have to because you don't want to want the
- 37:36Speaker 1: viewers to feel like you're just shoving it down their throats.
- 37:38Speaker 1: Burns is now in his office and we get Vadas
- 37:40Speaker 1: theme playing over the top of the Imperial March, and
- 37:44Speaker 1: they're discussing how the profits have dropped by thirty seven
- 37:46Speaker 1: percent because the image of the of the power plant
- 37:48Speaker 1: and mister Burns's is just not great at the moment,
- 37:50Speaker 1: so Smith suggests a film biography as part of the
- 37:53Speaker 1: film festival to improve their image. Get me, Steven Spielberg.
- 37:57Speaker 1: He is not available, sir, Get me he's non Union
- 37:59Speaker 1: mass An equivalent. It's just it's so awesome, isn't.
- 38:02Speaker 5: It, Senior spill Senior spielbergo.
- 38:05Speaker 1: Yes, I want you to do what Spilberg did for
- 38:07Speaker 1: Oscar Shindler. She lets, I didn't appreciate this, and that's
- 38:18Speaker 1: what I always gotta allow.
- 38:20Speaker 5: Like Shindlers, I.
- 38:25Speaker 1: Never appreciated Spielberg or whatever. It is enough when I
- 38:28Speaker 1: was younger. For sure, it's very very good. And what
- 38:31Speaker 1: what's his hat say? Did I say? Spielberg? Spielbergo, Oh,
- 38:35Speaker 1: I don't know, but I mean was just always renowned
- 38:38Speaker 1: for isn't a cap, isn't it? He's like, that doesn't
- 38:42Speaker 1: look like a drastic park we have we can up
- 38:44Speaker 1: hanging one second. I'm just just giggling him. Now, hang
- 38:47Speaker 1: on one second. What's his hat? Was just a red
- 38:49Speaker 1: hat and it was just lucky red hat. But yes,
- 38:51Speaker 1: that's as you were saying. He's known Spillbear for wearing
- 38:55Speaker 1: his hat's blue hat though.
- 38:56Speaker 5: Right, I think he's for a very very long time.
- 39:00Speaker 5: He was just mister baseball cap, the beard in the baseball.
- 39:03Speaker 1: Cap, the beard in the baseball gap. Yeah. So he's
- 39:05Speaker 1: got the non Mexican non union SORR Mexican equivalent to
- 39:08Speaker 1: help him film his film Homer and Jay and then
- 39:11Speaker 1: fighting over who gets the last pork chop and we
- 39:12Speaker 1: get their bellies fighting.
- 39:14Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 39:15Speaker 1: What I like about this though, was this It also
- 39:17Speaker 1: shows that Jay he's got the gift of the game
- 39:20Speaker 1: when it comes to his mouth. So he's a big talker,
- 39:23Speaker 1: but physically no home is always going to win. He's
- 39:25Speaker 1: a chicken. But Marches, now you've got to you've got
- 39:30Speaker 1: to let the guests have the last pork chop, and
- 39:32Speaker 1: even just that like sticks his tongue out. I'm like,
- 39:34Speaker 1: this guy not a nice person at Jay is not
- 39:38Speaker 1: a nice person at all. He shows off all his awards,
- 39:41Speaker 1: so he's really cocky. And then Homer brags about how
- 39:44Speaker 1: you know, he won the belching contest at work, and
- 39:46Speaker 1: then Jay out does him in that as well. It's like,
- 39:48Speaker 1: piss off, mate, just have something now. I want to
- 39:53Speaker 1: mention here a little bit later in the episode, so
- 39:56Speaker 1: he mentions here that the end people that can beouch louder,
- 39:59Speaker 1: he and you door are wealthy. Right when we hear
- 40:02Speaker 1: her burp later in the episode, for some reason, and
- 40:05Speaker 1: I cannot explain to you why used to be muted
- 40:09Speaker 1: on free to air TV. When they would err on Foxdale,
- 40:12Speaker 1: we could hear it. But when Channel ten would air
- 40:13Speaker 1: that scene where she where she burps and Crusty's hair moves,
- 40:17Speaker 1: you couldn't. You couldn't hear it. His hair just moved
- 40:20Speaker 1: and there was no sound. It was the strangest thing.
- 40:22Speaker 5: That's very weird. Any any reason why they do that.
- 40:25Speaker 1: You've never been able to find out why that is.
- 40:28Speaker 1: It's just the strangest thing that that one little bit
- 40:30Speaker 1: was always the initial burp by Jay not muted out.
- 40:34Speaker 1: But when Krusty says, We've got a date with your
- 40:36Speaker 1: door a wealthy and she burps, you couldn't hear it.
- 40:38Speaker 1: You just see the hair moving. It was the strangest thing.
- 40:41Speaker 5: Maybe it's just out of respect for the pulling surprise
- 40:45Speaker 5: winning author be.
- 40:48Speaker 1: Yeah, but I don't know. Yeah, it's just it's it's bizarre.
- 40:51Speaker 1: But then we hear the doorbell rings, smartest sisters or
- 40:55Speaker 1: sisters screams, and then he says that what do you
- 41:00Speaker 1: think of this next bit? I thought you'd appreciate this,
- 41:01Speaker 1: the woody Allen bit. I look came and ca can
- 41:06Speaker 1: do but sat smart, Jimmy and Skippy do can and
- 41:11Speaker 1: do do? I never feel I never felt worse for
- 41:15Speaker 1: Homer than.
- 41:15Speaker 5: I did that.
- 41:16Speaker 1: Yeah, it's pretty, it's pretty bad and tumbre weed coming through.
- 41:19Speaker 5: I love that.
- 41:20Speaker 1: Yeah. They then asked, who is gay? No Harvey firesting,
- 41:24Speaker 1: No way the camp has gone Hollywood. I love Harvey.
- 41:30Speaker 1: He's so funny. Oh my god.
- 41:31Speaker 5: Well co star of Missus Doubtfire, which was recently covered
- 41:35Speaker 5: by Dan Do on Guy Okay The Movie.
- 41:38Speaker 1: Guys, Yeah The Movie Guys podcast, available on Patreon it's
- 41:42Speaker 1: all tad to get apologies. Listens, if you just heard
- 41:44Speaker 1: a scream, Holly is now awoken, and this house is
- 41:47Speaker 1: going to be a rocket.
- 41:48Speaker 5: Now, alright, Well, we can't really race to the end
- 41:52Speaker 5: because we're not. We're about plenty of time.
- 41:55Speaker 1: We're fine. I believe my lovely wife Nikola is going
- 41:58Speaker 1: to be taking Holly for a walk to the park
- 41:59Speaker 1: to get it out the house. But before then, we
- 42:02Speaker 1: have them discussing Hugh's gay and Homer suggests whispers something
- 42:04Speaker 1: in his ear. Mcguiver is gay, and we're both not
- 42:07Speaker 1: happy about that at all. They're not, and I don't
- 42:10Speaker 1: know how. It's kind of like there's two ways looking
- 42:13Speaker 1: at it. It's they're using homosexuality as the punchline here,
- 42:16Speaker 1: like it's a bad things that he's gay. It's like, no,
- 42:19Speaker 1: Patty and Sam are annoy because they obviously like him
- 42:22Speaker 1: and they don't want him to be gay. But now
- 42:25Speaker 1: that we've reviewed, as we're saying earlier, there's something about marrying.
- 42:27Speaker 1: Did Patty not know what she was at this point?
- 42:29Speaker 1: I thought she always knew according to that episode.
- 42:31Speaker 5: Oh good point.
- 42:34Speaker 1: Continuity doesn't matter. It doesn't matter.
- 42:36Speaker 5: I think you can just as dudes can have man
- 42:39Speaker 5: crushes like I'm you know, It's true. Both dan Or
- 42:42Speaker 5: and I have on Joel Sellwood, the captain of the
- 42:45Speaker 5: Delongquat's football team, who has now decided to call it
- 42:48Speaker 5: to day on his illustrious career. Patty probably you know,
- 42:51Speaker 5: had a non sexual crush on mcgiver, or a sexual
- 42:56Speaker 5: crush but not sexual, if you know what I mean. No,
- 42:59Speaker 5: I don't, nor do I. I'm working that out.
- 43:03Speaker 1: But it comes to Jay hanging from his undies. He's
- 43:05Speaker 1: obviously been beaten up by Patty and Sammer. Margin's then
- 43:08Speaker 1: riding out the jury list for the festival in bed
- 43:10Speaker 1: with Homer, and Homer asked her, you respect my intelligence
- 43:13Speaker 1: of a pause? Yes? Why was it such a long pause?
- 43:16Speaker 1: No reason? You humor me? Yes? Wait a minute, that's bad,
- 43:20Speaker 1: And he's like, I know, I know he's a good critic,
- 43:22Speaker 1: but can he sing the Oscar the Oscar my Awena song?
- 43:25Speaker 1: And then he proceeds to do just that.
- 43:27Speaker 2: Oh, I wish I were an Oscar myre weener.
- 43:32Speaker 3: That's true. They like to be because if I were
- 43:36Speaker 3: an Oscar and Iroween, everyone would be in love with me.
- 43:50Speaker 3: That's it. March he knows the whole Hot Talk song.
- 43:53Speaker 3: Go ahead, sleep with him.
- 43:55Speaker 6: I'll just take a look of your hair to remember you.
- 43:58Speaker 5: Boy.
- 43:59Speaker 4: It's just you and me.
- 44:00Speaker 5: No luck of their.
- 44:02Speaker 1: Oscar my a Wiener never had one? Have you ever
- 44:04Speaker 1: had one? I have never had an oscar my Wiena. No,
- 44:07Speaker 1: we're Australians down and we have Huttons, footy Franks. Yeah,
- 44:10Speaker 1: that's right. Why I don't eat sausages anymore before so,
- 44:12Speaker 1: I've never I've never really liked sausages anyway. Eve when
- 44:15Speaker 1: I was a kid, I was just like, give me
- 44:16Speaker 1: a hamburger. I don't want a sausage. I was never
- 44:19Speaker 1: I loved the bunting snag. It was like a Saturday
- 44:21Speaker 1: morning ritual. But at a barbecue. I was all about
- 44:23Speaker 1: the hamburgers, hamburgers of Coleslaw.
- 44:26Speaker 5: I get where you're coming from, but oh I love
- 44:28Speaker 5: a sausage.
- 44:29Speaker 1: Use that sound bite. But yeah, so all the kids
- 44:34Speaker 1: are singing the song with him, and the dog's howling.
- 44:36Speaker 1: I'm assuming that's how that the that's like a Chicken
- 44:38Speaker 1: Tonight kind of reference, Like that's the song for the commercials.
- 44:40Speaker 1: I'm assuming, Yeah, that wasn't it at the movies isn't
- 44:45Speaker 1: it like the the commercial is to play before a
- 44:48Speaker 1: movie like go to the I know that was Let's
- 44:50Speaker 1: all go to.
- 44:51Speaker 5: The lobby and have ourselves a snack.
- 44:53Speaker 1: Dude.
- 44:54Speaker 5: Yeah, but I'm pretty sure the Oscar My Wiener theme
- 44:57Speaker 5: song was big on the TV commercials and things like that.
- 45:00Speaker 1: Yeah, it's no a hot dog song. No, it's not.
- 45:05Speaker 5: The classic version of the wing the theme song. But
- 45:10Speaker 5: Love's reaction to it, he knows the whole hot dog song.
- 45:14Speaker 5: Go ahead, sleep with him.
- 45:18Speaker 1: I'm just gonna take a look at your hair. It's
- 45:19Speaker 1: just me and you now, luck of hair much as
- 45:21Speaker 1: like calm down, you find so, he says, put me
- 45:23Speaker 1: on the jury list to prove that you don't think
- 45:25Speaker 1: I'm stupid. That she does, she crosses off scores asy
- 45:27Speaker 1: and puts Homer on there. Four figure discount is brought

- 46:45Speaker 1: seems to have just stuck like it's just what is
- 46:48Speaker 1: it about it that makes it so goddamn funny?
- 46:51Speaker 5: Is it the sound is I know, I know, Homer
- 46:53Speaker 5: says it works on so many levels.
- 46:54Speaker 1: It doesn't really, it just works on one level. But
- 46:57Speaker 1: it's funny. Just I don't know, it's ridiculous and immature,
- 47:01Speaker 1: but it's just I think that that moment followed Behmer's
- 47:04Speaker 1: laugh is just a perfect combination for me. I just
- 47:07Speaker 1: I just I adore it. Then we get puc Huntas
- 47:10Speaker 1: from from Barney, which.
- 47:12Speaker 5: I really love because I mean it's a wonderful piss
- 47:15Speaker 5: take on you know, the sort of gotten who are
- 47:20Speaker 5: kind of Yeah, actually it was more like colognets, like
- 47:24Speaker 5: Calvin kleinsession.
- 47:26Speaker 1: They already take pisce out of this mister Plow when
- 47:29Speaker 1: Homer says he pays a lot of money to have
- 47:31Speaker 1: a commercial from mister plowner, and it comes back like
- 47:33Speaker 1: a Calvin Klein kind of commercial with all black and
- 47:34Speaker 1: white yeaheah yeah yeah.
- 47:36Speaker 5: But yeah, those you know, the clouds really moving fast
- 47:39Speaker 5: across the guy and it's all in black and white
- 47:41Speaker 5: and all that kind of stuff. But they're all correct
- 47:44Speaker 5: and saying this is actually really good. I mean it's
- 47:47Speaker 5: I love all this stuff in it. I mean, I
- 47:49Speaker 5: really love. One of my favorite bits is actually the
- 47:53Speaker 5: when Barney quotes a fellow or something like there is
- 47:56Speaker 5: a serber Man lately, a clown presently a beast that
- 47:59Speaker 5: pretty much covers it.
- 48:02Speaker 1: I thought that was the funniest thing.
- 48:05Speaker 5: But also just the my name is Barney Gomble, I'm forty,
- 48:09Speaker 5: I'm single, and I drink. It's like, it's good writing.
- 48:13Speaker 1: Ye, that sums your life up. Yep, don't cry for me,
- 48:17Speaker 1: I'm already dead. Another quote that gets used a lot.
- 48:20Speaker 5: Yeah, very much so yeah, yeah, And.
- 48:23Speaker 1: I think they picked the perfect character to have this
- 48:25Speaker 1: film as well, because you just never expect Barney to
- 48:27Speaker 1: be the one to have this. But it's really beautifully made.
- 48:31Speaker 1: It's really great. But Haama wasn't watching it all then
- 48:33Speaker 1: we get a burns for all seasons. And the quote
- 48:37Speaker 1: of you truly are King of Kings that gets used
- 48:41Speaker 1: all the time when someone does something great on social media.
- 48:45Speaker 1: But do you know that was voiced by Phil Hartman.
- 48:47Speaker 5: Well, I did see his name in the in the
- 48:49Speaker 5: closing credits. I'm like, where where was Phil? But then
- 48:52Speaker 5: in retrospects like truly you are the king of king Yeah.
- 48:58Speaker 5: I saw some clip on on Twitter the other day.
- 49:02Speaker 5: Phil Harton was on like some chat show or something,
- 49:05Speaker 5: and he was talking about how he dubbed a line
- 49:08Speaker 5: for Jack Nicholson in some film that Nicholson made in
- 49:10Speaker 5: the eighties. Yeah, they needed him for adr and Nicholson
- 49:15Speaker 5: wasn't available. So Phil Hartman stepped in and said, I
- 49:19Speaker 5: really appreciate what you've done for me and my family.
- 49:22Speaker 5: And Harbin told met Jack Nicholson and told him this,
- 49:26Speaker 5: and Nicholson apparently said, no, wonder that film was my
- 49:28Speaker 5: only loser.
- 49:31Speaker 1: Harbin just cracked up.
- 49:32Speaker 5: It was the funniest thing.
- 49:33Speaker 1: But that was great. I didn't know that he'd ever
- 49:36Speaker 1: done that. I'm sad that Nicholson's hiding now because of
- 49:39Speaker 1: his apparently he's got is that dementia?
- 49:43Speaker 5: Either that or he's just you know, old, Yeah.
- 49:47Speaker 1: Apparently he's just he's something's not right.
- 49:50Speaker 5: Yeah, well he I think he admitted his like, I
- 49:52Speaker 5: can't remember lines anymore. I mean, whether that's legitimate dementia
- 49:56Speaker 5: or just old age wear and tear. I mean, there's
- 49:59Speaker 5: a great line. I think Sean McKellen, who said, like
- 50:01Speaker 5: an actor dized twice in the first time is when
- 50:02Speaker 5: you can't remember your line, that sucks.
- 50:05Speaker 1: And it does suck.
- 50:05Speaker 5: But I mean, you know, Jack gave us forty fifty
- 50:09Speaker 5: years of just being Jack Nicholson, you know, birth on
- 50:12Speaker 5: screen and offscreen.
- 50:13Speaker 1: Have you seen the moment where he flirted with Jennifer Lawrence? Yeah, like, oh,
- 50:21Speaker 1: I'm like that is just even though he's not in
- 50:23Speaker 1: movies anymore, he's still Jack Nicholson just the I thought
- 50:26Speaker 1: about it.
- 50:29Speaker 5: No, So he's more and Donald, he's more than indulgence
- 50:31Speaker 5: to you know, sitting sitting around the house in his
- 50:33Speaker 5: robe and you know, watch the Lakers.
- 50:34Speaker 1: Good on him. Anyone who has trouble flirting with women
- 50:37Speaker 1: just watched that ten seconds like that there he just
- 50:39Speaker 1: oozers charisma. Oh yeah, it's just the confidence of the guy.
- 50:44Speaker 1: And what I love the most is when he goes
- 50:45Speaker 1: back to it. You put the glasses on first, what's
- 50:48Speaker 1: his glasses? Backing on? Sunglasses and then he goes and talks, Ah,
- 50:51Speaker 1: what a man. They broke the mold. They broke the mold.
- 50:54Speaker 1: He really did. All right, But enough about Jack Nicholson, Nickson,
- 50:58Speaker 1: Phil Hartman of course, yes, he voice King of Kings.
- 51:01Speaker 1: And then we get the I was saying Billurn's moment.
- 51:07Speaker 1: These are the boy, ma'am.
- 51:09Speaker 4: No, they're saying Burns, Burns, are you seeing Boo Bourns?
- 51:18Speaker 3: I was saying balloons.
- 51:22Speaker 1: We come back, and the jury now voting for a winner.
- 51:25Speaker 1: We have Marge and Jay choose Pucahuntas and Quimby and
- 51:28Speaker 1: Krusty have been brought off by Burns and they have
- 51:31Speaker 1: voted for a Burns for all seasons and christ He
- 51:34Speaker 1: says we're gona get out of he because I've got
- 51:35Speaker 1: a date with with you, Dora. And then we hear
- 51:37Speaker 1: the burp. I was like, oh, thank god, the Burbs back,
- 51:40Speaker 1: because I just never understood why they cut it out.
- 51:42Speaker 1: It must have been out of respect. I'm not too sure.
- 51:43Speaker 1: Doesn't make any sense. Maybe she complained. I'm not too sure.
- 51:46Speaker 1: But then we get the moment you quoted earlier. It
- 51:48Speaker 1: moved me. Do it back a house, La, that's such
- 51:57Speaker 1: a it's such a good It's such a perfect rusty line,
- 52:00Speaker 1: isn't it. It's on part for me of like the
- 52:04Speaker 1: they bought a dumb truck full of money up to
- 52:06Speaker 1: my house. I'm not made of stone. Homer wants football
- 52:12Speaker 1: on the growing football in the grind. Jay says, you
- 52:15Speaker 1: need to take a break because we're getting nowhere. Margie
- 52:18Speaker 1: goes and confronts Homer says, I knew you. I knew
- 52:20Speaker 1: it was this would happen if I put you on
- 52:21Speaker 1: the jury, you'd vote for the stupidest film. And Jay
- 52:24Speaker 1: walks up and he's like, you're going to make fun
- 52:25Speaker 1: of me. No, I'm not going to make fun of you.
- 52:27Speaker 1: But before that, though, he says, what does Homer say
- 52:30Speaker 1: that makes him go? How many times have I had
- 52:32Speaker 1: Rex Read say that? Sleeping with the with the slipping
- 52:35Speaker 1: with the What? What is Marge slipping with the chief?
- 52:39Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 52:40Speaker 1: The boss of some kind? Yes? Who's Rex Read? I
- 52:43Speaker 1: don't know who Rex Read is.
- 52:45Speaker 5: Rex Reader is a critic who's still working in New York.
- 52:49Speaker 5: I think he's I think he writes for the New
- 52:51Speaker 5: York Observer. Yeah, always a bit bitchy. His reviews lately
- 52:56Speaker 5: are just ship. He's just got terrible taste. You know.
- 53:00Speaker 5: He'll anything that's you know, vaguely interesting and be kind
- 53:04Speaker 5: of like, no, don't like it, and anyone anyone any
- 53:10Speaker 5: tastes going fuck off?
- 53:11Speaker 1: Rex?
- 53:11Speaker 5: Why are you still around?
- 53:13Speaker 1: Is that you don't have taste? And he does.
- 53:16Speaker 5: Man, he's got it. Look, here's the thing about film criticism.
- 53:20Speaker 5: We're all just arseholes with opinions.
- 53:22Speaker 1: That's all weird.
- 53:24Speaker 5: You can have an informed opinion, you can certainly, you
- 53:27Speaker 5: can know your stuff, you can know your film history,
- 53:29Speaker 5: and you know, see how stuff relates to everything else
- 53:32Speaker 5: and all that kind of thing. But in the end,
- 53:33Speaker 5: it's just your opinion. If you can express your opinion
- 53:36Speaker 5: well and back up your arguments, that's great. No one's
- 53:38Speaker 5: right or wrong. You know, you just got to go
- 53:41Speaker 5: with the voice, the voice you can trust.
- 53:43Speaker 1: So then he says, I'm not going to make fun
- 53:44Speaker 1: of you, but there are better things in life than
- 53:46Speaker 1: seeing a man get hitting the groin with the football.
- 53:49Speaker 5: By the way, shout out for the delivery of groin.
- 53:52Speaker 1: Yep, And the football hits him in the groin, and
- 53:54Speaker 1: Nelson was obviously the person. He threw it Homers, and
- 53:58Speaker 1: he had some serious thinking to do, and he goes
- 54:00Speaker 1: and rewatches it. Barney's film had heart football on the Green,
- 54:03Speaker 1: had a football in the green. And then after finishing
- 54:08Speaker 1: Barney's film, he says, you know what, I've really learned
- 54:09Speaker 1: a lot from this. I'm going to straighten up, fly
- 54:11Speaker 1: up whatever beer here, I'll take ten.
- 54:15Speaker 5: That's something I've always loved about this. Those all that
- 54:18Speaker 5: the beer guys wandering around an empty theater beer here,
- 54:23Speaker 5: it was just instant. I'll take ten.
- 54:25Speaker 1: It's like when the guys selling hot dogs at the funeral.
- 54:29Speaker 1: You're just following my husband around, lady. He's getting my
- 54:31Speaker 1: children through college. She and Scratchy have won the Best
- 54:38Speaker 1: Short Film Best Animated Short for four Funerals and a Wedding.
- 54:42Speaker 1: What I liked about this was it, at least a
- 54:43Speaker 1: scratch you got to live a happy life. I was
- 54:46Speaker 1: thinking the exact same thing. I'm obviously they exploded at
- 54:50Speaker 1: the end, but he looked old and fraid of at
- 54:52Speaker 1: this point. They both went out together.
- 54:54Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, they had a long live together. They had
- 54:56Speaker 5: a couple of dynamite kids, and.
- 54:58Speaker 1: It's fantastic and they both die.
- 55:00Speaker 5: And also Scratchy checks out as well.
- 55:03Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, it is the mouse?
- 55:06Speaker 5: Is it you the mouse?
- 55:13Speaker 1: But yeah, but Barney wins with Poker Hunters, and Marge
- 55:15Speaker 1: is very proud of Homer for voting for the right film.
- 55:18Speaker 1: You know what he says, it's not tough, or he
- 55:20Speaker 1: says not tough yet not tough being a film. Cricket cricket,
- 55:24Speaker 1: And then Barney says I'm going to be a new
- 55:26Speaker 1: Barnard Gumbel, hard working, clean and sober. And he wins
- 55:29Speaker 1: a lifetime supplier beer just hook it to my veins. Whatever.
- 55:33Speaker 1: That gets used a lot whenever, like a new trailer
- 55:35Speaker 1: comes out or something very much. So yeah, I see
- 55:39Speaker 1: that one so much. Yeah. The family now sending off
- 55:42Speaker 1: Jay at the airport. You know, wonder you can visit
- 55:44Speaker 1: my show? Yeah, we're not going to be doing that.
- 55:46Speaker 1: And Homer is and he tricks himself with some beer
- 55:48Speaker 1: nuts whatever, and then they mentioned here, well, faithfully, mister
- 55:51Speaker 1: Burns learned that you can't buy off. You can't win
- 55:53Speaker 1: an a war by paying people money. And six months
- 55:55Speaker 1: later at the Oscars, there's two elements of this. Obviously,
- 55:58Speaker 1: you know, he doesn't win. George C. Scott wins with
- 56:01Speaker 1: men getting hit by football, right. But what I love
- 56:04Speaker 1: is that are they taking the piss out of the
- 56:06Speaker 1: Academy and that this short film came out and someone
- 56:08Speaker 1: else has just ripped off another film and it's winning
- 56:11Speaker 1: Best Film at the Oscars? Or is that just meant to?
- 56:13Speaker 1: Is that looking too much into it? I think that's
- 56:15Speaker 1: really just a little bit too much ender. Okay, okay,
- 56:19Speaker 1: oh my grind.
- 56:21Speaker 5: I think that's one say ah my grind and have
- 56:24Speaker 5: one of the most intense actors in Hollywood, you know,
- 56:27Speaker 5: sort of very renowned, respected actor, just winning, finally winning
- 56:31Speaker 5: and asking for my grind. Oh my grind. That's the
- 56:36Speaker 5: one thing I've always loved about this episode, George C.
- 56:41Speaker 1: Scott's It's just such a funny way to end this episode.
- 56:46Speaker 1: But did you know that Maurice Lamar is LaMarsh Lamar
- 56:49Speaker 1: from Future? Yeah, we also voiced on the critic as well,
- 56:53Speaker 1: so he voiced George Scott in this episode. He voiced
- 56:56Speaker 1: William Shatner. He voiced the Burps as well, both both Burps.
- 57:00Speaker 1: Hey 's nice work, Maurice. Indeed, so that is the
- 57:04Speaker 1: end of the episode because mister Burns does not win
- 57:08Speaker 1: the oscar and he cracks the shits. Overall this episode,
- 57:12Speaker 1: I don't understand the not disdain, but just the meh
- 57:15Speaker 1: response that it's got many that received. Yeah, that's ridiculous silliness. Yeah,
- 57:21Speaker 1: I thought this was just one of the most memorable
- 57:23Speaker 1: episodes of all time due to all the moments that
- 57:26Speaker 1: get rehashed in social media. It's just I just thought
- 57:28Speaker 1: this is a standout.
- 57:29Speaker 5: Really Oh god, it's clearly taken up space in people's minds.
- 57:33Speaker 5: If it's if there's so many bits and pieces of
- 57:35Speaker 5: it that are repurposed in other ways.
- 57:38Speaker 1: It's so wacky that if you told me that and
- 57:43Speaker 1: con O'Brian or Swartzport I wrote this episode, I believe
- 57:46Speaker 1: you because it just feels like it doesn't it.
- 57:49Speaker 5: It does, it does. It's full of zingers and really
- 57:52Speaker 5: tightly constructed, I think, because.
- 57:53Speaker 1: I think with those two guys there, when I used
- 57:55Speaker 1: to write episodes, there were so many funny moments, but
- 57:58Speaker 1: they all progressed the story still. It wasn't just like
- 58:01Speaker 1: random moments for the sake of random moment. It was
- 58:03Speaker 1: zing zing zing, zing zing and zing zinger, but continuous
- 58:06Speaker 1: story flow.
- 58:07Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 58:07Speaker 1: I really really enjoyed it. What do we learn bomber,
- 58:10Speaker 1: mister Davis? What did you learn from a star? As Burns?
- 58:15Speaker 5: The lyrics to the oscar Awa thing?
- 58:18Speaker 1: Is that what you truly like to be? Oh? Yeah?
- 58:22Speaker 5: Although, as I said, hot dogs, I'm a hot dog.
- 58:26Speaker 5: What kind of kid eats I'm a hot dog? What
- 58:29Speaker 5: kind of dogs? I just remember when that when they
- 58:36Speaker 5: were doing it on that episode, though there was everyone
- 58:38Speaker 5: was singing along.
- 58:39Speaker 1: Fat kids, sissy kids, even kids with chicken box.
- 58:45Speaker 5: Everyone was so into it.
- 58:46Speaker 1: Check out our review of Grade School Confidential. I believe
- 58:48Speaker 1: that was last month's I on Springfield, Guy on Springfield,
- 58:51Speaker 1: I should say yes. I hope you enjoyed. Our review
- 58:55Speaker 1: of Stars Burns. Was fun to go back and revisit
- 58:56Speaker 1: this one. I wasn't too sure because I remember as
- 58:58Speaker 1: a kid not really liking it, and it was honestly
- 59:00Speaker 1: one of the episodes when I was younger that I
- 59:02Speaker 1: would sort of go ah, this one, I was sort
- 59:04Speaker 1: of when I used to have my tape, so he's
- 59:05Speaker 1: always one i'd fast forward it. It was never a
- 59:08Speaker 1: favorite of mine, but going back now, I definitely appreciate
- 59:11Speaker 1: it more. What did I learned? I learned that The
- 59:13Speaker 1: Critic is likely a show that thirty four year old
- 59:16Speaker 1: Dan I was going to enjoy, So I'm going to
- 59:18Speaker 1: go and check it out. I actually have them on
- 59:19Speaker 1: DVD both seasons, so I'm actually looking forward to checking out.
- 59:22Speaker 1: I wonder if the Patron's patrons let us know, would
- 59:24Speaker 1: you be interested in hearing us talk about The Critic,
- 59:27Speaker 1: because I'll be happy to send you the davdat as
- 59:30Speaker 1: well as the Davids, you want to check out the
- 59:31Speaker 1: show as well, because I just think it's a show
- 59:32Speaker 1: that honestly, now, I think it's a show where that
- 59:37Speaker 1: kind of sense of humor is much more prominent and
- 59:39Speaker 1: much more appreciated. I know, what do you think?
- 59:42Speaker 5: I think it might be? Right?
- 59:44Speaker 1: So, I mean we're all assholes, don't We.
- 59:49Speaker 5: Don't tell anybody. Yeah, Patrons, get on it. If you
- 59:53Speaker 5: think you'd like to hear Dan and I having a
- 59:55Speaker 5: bit of a chat about that, let us know.
- 59:58Speaker 1: Y send us a message on Facebook or Patreon or
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: Simpsons Mailbag at gmail dot com.
- 1:00:03Speaker 5: Let us know, because you'll be if we talk about
- 1:00:07Speaker 5: the critic, you'll be hearing a lot of this Canata.
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: Yes, exactly right, all right, guys, that has been our
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: star as Burns this month's episode of A Guy on Springfield.
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: I'll be chucking up the poll in a week or
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: so up in the Patreon group, so you can look
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: out for that for the next four episodes in which
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: you guys can vote on what we're going to review
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: in October. I'm thinking for Otoba, miss Davis, I'm going
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: to pick four different trios of horror episodes. What do
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: you reckon.
- 1:00:31Speaker 5: I think that's a very good idea, very good.
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: Idea, indeed, a clever idea. Some would say. All right,
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: so the next month is going to be a Treos
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: of horror, So you guys look out for that and
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: you can vote on that. Thank you, guys for your
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: ongoing support. We do love each and every one of you.
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: But for now, mister Davis, any final words for those
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: amazing patrons out there my podcast
