- 0:00Speaker 1: Chapter twenty five, Even as I have loved you from
- 0:04Speaker 1: the True Vine by Andrew Murray. This LibriVox recording is
- 0:08Speaker 1: in the public domain recording by Phil Snyder. Even as
- 0:12Speaker 1: I have loved you. This is my commandment that ye
- 0:17Speaker 1: love one another, even as I have loved you, John
- 0:21Speaker 1: fifteen twelve. This is the second time our Lord uses
- 0:26Speaker 1: the expression even as I. The first time it was
- 0:30Speaker 1: of his relation to the Father, keeping his commandments and
- 0:34Speaker 1: abiding in his love, even so we are to keep
- 0:38Speaker 1: Christ's commandments and abide in his love. The second time
- 0:42Speaker 1: he speaks of his relation to us as the rule
- 0:44Speaker 1: of our love to our brethren, love one another as
- 0:48Speaker 1: I have loved you. In each case, his disposition and
- 0:52Speaker 1: conduct is to be the law for ours. It is
- 0:56Speaker 1: again the truth we have more than once insisted on
- 0:59Speaker 1: perfect life between the vine and the branch, even as I.
- 1:05Speaker 1: But is it not a vain thing to imagine that
- 1:08Speaker 1: we can keep His commandments and love the brethren even
- 1:12Speaker 1: as he kept his fathers, and as he loved us?
- 1:15Speaker 1: And must not the attempt end in failure and discouragement. Undoubtedly,
- 1:20Speaker 1: if we seek to carry out the injunction in our
- 1:22Speaker 1: strength or without a full apprehension of the truth of
- 1:26Speaker 1: the Vine and its branches. But if we understand that
- 1:29Speaker 1: the even as I is just the one great lesson
- 1:33Speaker 1: of the Parable, the one continual language of the Vine
- 1:37Speaker 1: to the branch, we shall see that it is not
- 1:40Speaker 1: the question of what we feel able to accomplish, but
- 1:43Speaker 1: of what Christ is able to work in us. These
- 1:47Speaker 1: high and holy commands obey even as I love even
- 1:52Speaker 1: as I, are just meant to bring us to the
- 1:55Speaker 1: consciousness of our impotence, and through that to waken us
- 1:59Speaker 1: to the need and the beauty of the sufficiency of
- 2:02Speaker 1: what is provided for us in the Vine. We shall
- 2:06Speaker 1: begin to hear the Vine speaking every moment to the branch,
- 2:10Speaker 1: even as I, even as I my life is your life,
- 2:15Speaker 1: and have a share in all my fullness. The spirit
- 2:18Speaker 1: in you and the fruit that comes from you is
- 2:22Speaker 1: all just the same as in me. Be not afraid,
- 2:26Speaker 1: but let your faith grasp each even as I as
- 2:30Speaker 1: the divine assurance that because I live in you, you
- 2:34Speaker 1: may and can live like me. But why, if this
- 2:38Speaker 1: really be the meaning of the parable, if this really
- 2:41Speaker 1: be the life a branch may live, do so few
- 2:44Speaker 1: realize it because they do not know the heavenly mystery
- 2:48Speaker 1: of the Vine. They know much of the parable and
- 2:51Speaker 1: its beautiful lessons. But the hidden spiritual mystery of the Vine,
- 2:56Speaker 1: in his divine omnipotence and nearness, bearing in supple applying
- 3:00Speaker 1: them all the day, This they do not know, because
- 3:04Speaker 1: they have not waited on God's Spirit to reveal it
- 3:07Speaker 1: to them. Love one another, even as I have loved you, ye,
- 3:13Speaker 1: even as I. How are we to begin, if we
- 3:16Speaker 1: are really to learn the mystery with the confession that
- 3:20Speaker 1: we need to be brought to an entirely new mode
- 3:22Speaker 1: of life, because we have never yet known Christ as
- 3:26Speaker 1: the Vine, in the completeness of his quickening and transforming power,
- 3:31Speaker 1: with the surrender to be cleansed from all that is
- 3:34Speaker 1: of self and detached from all that is of the world,
- 3:38Speaker 1: to live only and holy as Christ lived for the
- 3:41Speaker 1: glory of the Father. And then with the faith that this,
- 3:45Speaker 1: even as I is, in very deed, what Christ is
- 3:49Speaker 1: ready to make true, the very life the Vine will
- 3:52Speaker 1: maintain in the branch wholly dependent upon Him, even as
- 3:57Speaker 1: I ever again it is my blessed Lord as the Vine.
- 4:02Speaker 1: So the branch, one life, one spirit, one obedience, one joy,
- 4:08Speaker 1: one love. Lord Jesus, in the faith that thou art
- 4:12Speaker 1: my vine and that I am thy branch. I accept
- 4:16Speaker 1: thy command as a promise, and take thy even as
- 4:20Speaker 1: I as a simple revelation of what thou dost work
- 4:24Speaker 1: in me. Yea Lord, as thou hast loved, I will love.
- 4:32Speaker 1: End of Chapter twenty five.
