- Forged In The Dark: race bib, ⁓ metal, ⁓ official timer, and it still counts. Welcome to Forged in the Dark. I'm your host, Jamie. Let's dig in. We didn't sign up for a race. We created our own. Now I run with this small-ish ⁓ run group. On Thursday last week, we chose to run a 10K, that evolved into running a 10K. ⁓ And then doing a cold plunge into the San Marcos River. So ⁓ here we ⁓ early morning. It's still dark. ⁓ And it's hot. ⁓ It's almost 80 degrees. It's ninety-four percent humidity. And our lead runner is training for a ⁓ half Iron Man triathlon. And she's fast. And everyone could keep up. ⁓ And not everyone finished. I there were moments where ⁓ I didn't know. ⁓ How I would continue. One of our runners, I I saw her falling back, and and I didn't want her to lose sight of us. So I fell back in an attempt for her to not get lost. Now there's a lesson here. There's a lesson here about overgiving. Because what happened in this moment was because I was thinking about the lady behind me, the ladies in front of me. Got really far ahead. Okay, not really far ahead, but they got far ahead. So when the lady that didn't make it headed off to the shortcut, ⁓ my gosh, I had to work extra hard to get caught up to the lead ladies. And then I had to work even extra hard to try to keep up with their pace. So That there is a lesson there about overgiving, and I know we're talking about running on the 4th of July with no medals, but this is the work. think about it. ⁓ You run a 10K, whether you are with yourself or by yourself or with a group or signed up for a race. How does ⁓ one more than the other? They don't. ⁓ It ⁓ when you sign up for a race, you have an audience, you have a potential medal, ⁓ you an opportunity to have your ⁓ your your personal best recorded. But what ⁓ actually matters ⁓ more than accolades, more the public recognition, recognition ⁓ is showing up and actually the work. And I think that's what I love about being part of this group so much. Because no matter what, this group shows up. And and we showed up. And there were moments that I did not know that I was to make it. ⁓ especially after the other lady fell off. I saw how easy it would be to just cut across downtown and be back to my car. But I committed to myself that I was running this 10K and come hell or high water. It was going to happen. And it did. And I don't know why I just said hell or high water, but let's go ahead and go to the water. Because we all made it. We all made it back. we ⁓ all made it down to the river. And in the six months I've been running, ⁓ I have ran four 10Ks only one with people. So ⁓ Running a 10K by myself and running with a group that is setting a pace that is not mine, they're two completely different kinds of running. So, number one, I did that. And I have never jumped in the San Marcos River the way we all jumped in. I have never done the whole like like think of it like from sauna to cold plunge. If you like to sauna and you like to cold plunge, going from the sauna to the cold plunge. Going from the run that the sweat is just stuck to you. And then on the count of three, we all went right into the river. And ⁓ my goodness, it was so interesting because the water wasn't quite as deep as it looked. So at some point, ⁓ my bottom did hit some rocks and send me shooting back up. But as I was going back up, I noticed how tense my body was. And I had the thought, ⁓ my gosh, you're in the freeze response. You are going to have to stick your head out of this water and take a breath, and you are going to have to start swimming. So going from ridiculously hot, so excited to get in the water that I forgot I had my left AirPod in, and I no longer have a left airpod. And that's the I I think we can we can talk about that a little bit because ⁓ you're working on something, anytime you're growing, anytime you're building, you are going to lose things from time to time. ⁓ and and these are people, places, things, airpods. I mean look. For the entire experience of the whole day, the whole morning, one airbod is a small, is a small loss. But we're always going to lose things. And we can't, well, you can do whatever you want, but I am not going to let one missing electronic little device, no matter how much I use it, I am not going to let that. Take away from everything that not only I did, but my entire group did. So I'm underwater and I'm having this dialogue with myself because I'm recognizing that I'm in the stress response and I'm telling myself that I'm it in like within seconds, I'm going to have to breathe and swim, breathe and swim, breathe and swim. And then my head comes out of the water and I hear all of the other women screaming. And I can't even get any words out of my mouth. I was so cold. All I could think is breathe and swim. Breathe and swim. So it's also interesting, How you can in real time notice these shifts in your body. 72 degree water may not seem that cold to you, but after this long hard run, covered in sweat, we ditched our shoes, we jumped in the river. I don't know that any one of us had ever ran like that and jumped in the river. We all did something new. And here's the thing: there were multiple times during this run. That I questioned if I could keep going. Honestly. And and and and apparently I was being really funny. I was feeling miserable. My legs were hurting. My glutes, like with every step, my glutes were just speaking to me. I seriously got to a point where I was chanting to myself, you feel great. ⁓ You're not tired. You feel great. You feel great. You feel great. You can do this. Left foot, right foot, left foot, right foot. Like just anything to keep going. Because not finishing wasn't an option. There were moments where I did not know that I would make it to our perceived finish line back to the cars. But I did. And then we got to jump in the river, ⁓ and ⁓ we were all laughing. We ⁓ having ⁓ so much fun. And in hindsight, I love every part of this experience. I love every part of this experience. I love, ⁓ I love that the that the one that did not make it She she re she recognized at some point that she did not have the finish in her. ⁓ It's not about quitting, it's about listening to your body. Well ⁓ the fact that that when you grow, when you do hard you're going to from time to time lose things. Where is your focused attention going to go? ⁓ Is it going to go on the accomplishment? Is it going to go to the fun? Or is it going to go to the loss or the perceived loss? Right? So you don't have to sign up for a race w where the numbers can be documented in public record. Look, she did it. Look, he did it. Look, they accomplished this. You you don't have to have An official race to create a race. You can be in the middle of an absolutely miserable run and later on that day look at it and be like, ⁓ my gosh, I didn't quit. ⁓ my gosh, I didn't quit. ⁓ my gosh, I didn't quit. so ⁓ you don't need to sign up for the You need to give yourself credit for the results that you're getting. This is what this show is all about. habits that hold when no one is watching, what you do when no one is watching, what you do ⁓ the dark that determines everything in the light. Do you show up for the race? Whether it is a real race or a race among friends. ⁓ When you do lose something, does that loss ruin the entire thing or do you keep going? And how much fun are you having in this process? Okay, I just looked at the time How much fun are you having? How are you showing up? ⁓ Are you attached to the metal? ⁓ Are attached to the numbers that people see? Or are you willing to just go out there and do it anyway? All right. ⁓ that's what I have for you today. Until next time.
