- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Josh, what was the first truck you worked out of, or first vehicle you worked out of the city?
- 0:04SPEAKER_01: At the glorious ninety-seven GMC Jimmy.
- 0:08SPEAKER_01: Mm-hmm with ladder racks on top.
- 0:11SPEAKER_01: And but it was um it's not optimal, but it made the got the job done.
- 0:15SPEAKER_01: I think I put a 32-foot ladder on there one time.
- 0:18SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 0:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we did do that.
- 0:20SPEAKER_01: Was I with you with that one?
- 0:21SPEAKER_01: I think so.
- 0:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: We had to go we ended up going across a bridge that we shouldn't have gone across, I think.
- 0:26SPEAKER_01: Benjamin Franklin Bridge.
- 0:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 0:27SPEAKER_01: You holding reaching out your hand over top and just holding it down so it didn't fall off in mid-traffic.
- 0:34SPEAKER_01: Trying to take a 32-foot ladder to downtown Philadelphia.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: That was not fun.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that was good enough.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: Because the the the reason that's sketchy, if uh people haven't like can't imagine that, a 32-foot ladder is what like 16 feet at least.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: It's probably 16 to 17 feet.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: It's probably close to like 18 feet long, and then a Jemmy is it's just like a Chevy blazer, basically.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and Josh had the two-door variety, right?
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: No four.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I did.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: Uh that's right.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: Um, and then uh it's just a short wheelbase, so a lot of the ladder is sticking behind and in front of the vehicle, so there's not much for it to rest on.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: Man, that was sketchy.
- 1:16SPEAKER_01: I do remember that because it was bouncing, any like bumpy, it's just bouncing, and we took the wrong turn in Philadelphia.
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: This is before there was, I don't think I had a GPS at the time.
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: I don't know if I was using MapQuest, and we didn't know Philly that well.
- 1:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: And we went down the wrong road.
- 1:30SPEAKER_01: We were getting over the Benjamin Franklin Bridge, which is a huge bridge, I believe, to New Jersey.
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: We had to turn around and go back over the bridge, and dude, we were flying because everyone tra it was morning traffic, people were moving.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: And then we had to maneuver through these tiny little streets in Philly, and I remember you had to get out of the car and like look to make sure I could make it in certain areas.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: Oh, because some of those little where the neighborhoods we were working in, the streets were so tight.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: Yes, and you had no like turning radius to do it.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: So, like, and it was just it wasn't that the truck couldn't make it down, it was that the ladder was so long.
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: Uh and then I would fold they had back, there were two rows of seats, like you know, the front and then the the middle, so I'd fold those down and I would put all the paint stuff in the back.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: And then the problem was if anything spilled, you could just you would smell it, and there's no separation.
- 2:17SPEAKER_01: And then if I remember if I had the slam on the brakes, like paint poles would come flying forward and would kind of go between the sh the shotgun seat and my driver's seat and like almost like poke me in the arm.
- 2:27SPEAKER_01: Ugh.
- 2:27SPEAKER_01: So I was like, if I ever get in an accident, I'm done.
- 2:30SPEAKER_01: Because all the stuff is gonna just fly forward and nail me in the f in the back of the head.
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you're gonna take like a six six-inch spackle blade to like your throat.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: A roller pan or a whatever was back there, a paint can to the head.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: They always do those, uh I remember seeing those crash tests where they like put stuff in someone's your back seat or like uh you know, like a sedan where they have that part that's behind the back seats like on the window.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, people will put stuff there, and then they'll like crash the car at like 60, and then they watch the stuff come and fly like into it, and you're like, oh.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: Like we we would have been that would have been me.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: We would have it would have just been a pile of trash.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: And like and I think the worst part of that vehicle was when you used to do gutter cleanings and you like left a bag in there, that thing rotted.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: It smelled so bad in there.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: I couldn't f I didn't know what was so smelly in the back of my car.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: I'm like, what what stinks back here?
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: Something's rotten.
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: I kept looking and it was just filled with crap.
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: And then I remember it was like a week of just smelling horribly, like, dude, this stinks.
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: Because you ride with me to the job sometimes in the same truck.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: Then I was like, Yeah, I'll take my car.
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: You'll take your, yeah.
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: And then I found it was like it buried underneath like the wheel well inside was a big bag of stinky leaves.
- 3:42SPEAKER_01: It was the worst.
- 3:43SPEAKER_01: And the worst, the the top craziest thing that happened was well, not the craziest, I did a couple.
- 3:50SPEAKER_01: Well, I I was going to school and working at the same time.
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: And so I would go work like three days a week, four days a week, and then go to school Tuesdays and Thursdays.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: And I was like, all right, and I would have to like redo, like get my books and all that stuff.
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: So I drove to school.
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: I was living at home, commuting to school, and I got to school, I went to class, came back, and I'm looking at my truck.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: Like, hey man, that truck looks a lot like mine.
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: They got a ladder on it.
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: That's kind of cool.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: And then I look out closer and I'm like, oh my god, there's a ladder in my truck.
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: I had no idea there was a ladder in my truck, and like that doesn't seem bad.
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: I didn't have any ropes, I didn't have anything on there.
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: Because what I would do, and this was not a good idea, is when I was done with the ladder, I would just untie it, and then like, okay, I'm gonna untie it all and then take take it down.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: So I untied it, but then I got distracted, went inside, got my books, came out, thought I took the ladder off my truck, and I drove like 20 minutes with no there's no bungee cords, there's no ties, there's nothing.
- 4:47SPEAKER_01: So the only thing that was holding this thing on was gravity.
- 4:50SPEAKER_01: The grace of God.
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: Because I had no idea, because I was hitting I was just driving like there was no ladder on my truck.
- 4:54SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: I had no idea it was there, and I was freaking out.
- 4:57SPEAKER_01: I'm like, oh my god, I cannot believe there was a ladder on here.
- 5:00SPEAKER_01: And so I had to scrounge through my truck, and I think I found two core like two bungee cords in my truck, and I tied it on the uh I tied it, tied it up and made it home alright.
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: But I drove 20 minutes with just a ladder set on my GMC Jimmy ladder racks.
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: That was it.
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and those those were not the grippiest ladder racks.
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: So that just must have been perfectly balanced.
- 5:19SPEAKER_01: But I just had I just was driving normal.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, that's it's not a good look.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: Well, it's like you felt like you closed the ticket when you got it.
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so I I've learned I've had the ladder fall off my truck a few times, so yeah.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, lost the ladder that way.
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, when it went off on 309, was that because something snapped or you didn't tie it down?
- 5:37SPEAKER_01: Well, I got a little well after that incident, I'm like, well, I don't need to tie it down too much.
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: I'm just gonna use two bungees.
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: So I'm like, two bungees works.
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: And I remember I was driving.
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: That's the best lesson to learn from that.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: I was driving down this crazy, you know, highway called 309 where we live.
- 5:53SPEAKER_01: And I must I must have had like more than I might have had more than one ladder on there.
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: I was gonna do a pressure washing, and I do a I don't know, it just it just went, I hear this scraping.
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: I'm like, oh no, what's going on here?
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: And I hear bang bang, and the ladder just falls right off my truck.
- 6:11SPEAKER_01: And like I just had one hand on the wheel.
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: Of course, I was just drinking like a Starbucks or whatever.
- 6:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:16SPEAKER_01: Oh, so I just pull over, and then my ladder's laying across a lane and a half of the two-lane highway, and it's like early in the morning, so I was like, okay, I'm just gonna run out and get it.
- 6:25SPEAKER_01: So I run out there like Barry Sanders style, try to get it, but then this SUV comes, like, ugh, and I turn around and I sprint back across the road and it goes bang, bang, and it hits the ladder.
- 6:35SPEAKER_01: It's like, okay, so I try it again.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: I'm like, and the ladder looked okay, and the car didn't stop.
- 6:40SPEAKER_01: It's like, thank God he didn't stop.
- 6:41SPEAKER_01: So I run back out there and I'm trying to grab as soon as I touch the ladder, I look and there's a car coming because it's kind of around a corner, and they're going like 65, 70 miles an hour.
- 6:49SPEAKER_01: People are flying.
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: And I run back and bang bang hits that one.
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: And like these cars just ran it over, and it was fine.
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: This was like a 24-foot ladder.
- 6:59SPEAKER_01: Uh, and then I run back, I'm like, okay, I gotta, I gotta get this thing.
- 7:03SPEAKER_01: A cop rolls up and flips on the lights.
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: Whoop, whoop.
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: I was like, sweet.
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: And so he blocks it off so I can run out there.
- 7:11SPEAKER_01: I grab it and I pull it back.
- 7:13SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, oh man, he's gonna give me a ticket.
- 7:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 7:16SPEAKER_01: So he pulls over, he's like, uh, excuse me, sir.
- 7:19SPEAKER_01: It's like, uh, just make sure next time you uh secure that ladder.
- 7:22SPEAKER_01: It's like what you need to do is there's a Home Depot right there.
- 7:25SPEAKER_01: Go buy some rope.
- 7:26SPEAKER_01: He says, Rope, not bungees, he says rope, and tie that thing off.
- 7:30SPEAKER_01: Uh-huh.
- 7:30SPEAKER_01: He's like, Don't put that in your truck right now.
- 7:32SPEAKER_01: Come back and put it on your truck.
- 7:33SPEAKER_01: Oh, good.
- 7:34SPEAKER_01: So the ladder is trashed, it was completely bent.
- 7:36SPEAKER_01: He's like, and I need your info because if these people complain, I'm gonna bring them right back to you.
- 7:41SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 7:41SPEAKER_01: I think thank the Lord nobody complained.
- 7:45SPEAKER_01: Man, I was like sucked.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: All right, so that was like early on, and then you went from that to uh when was you when did you get your next truck?
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: I did I did a lease for Nissan Frontier.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 7:57SPEAKER_01: What year was that Frontier?
- 7:58SPEAKER_01: Oh seven.
- 8:00SPEAKER_01: It was an 07, okay.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: Something like that, 07, 06, 05, one of those.
- 8:03SPEAKER_01: Um so Nissan Frontier, and I remember the first week I got it.
- 8:07SPEAKER_01: I put paint, like I had a five-gallon of paint, which I put in the back, and I'm like, yeah, it's fine.
- 8:12SPEAKER_01: And I didn't I didn't strap it down and do anything, and it's the real the bed's really slick back there.
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: It was a six-foot bed, which was nice, but it was just a two-door.
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: And man, I remember I was driving for like a big I just gotta I had to move it like two miles, this paint, and it won't flops over, and as soon as I pull into the job site, paint is going glug, glug, glug, glug, glug, glu all over my brand new bed, and it's just pouring out the back.
- 8:36SPEAKER_01: I'm like, son of a bee.
- 8:38SPEAKER_01: And uh I just get drop cloths and just try to like stop it, and it was just I'm like, oh, wait a ruined your truck bed in like three weeks.
- 8:46SPEAKER_01: The first one, yeah.
- 8:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 8:47SPEAKER_01: It was before I had my cap I ordered a cap and it didn't come in yet, and I was just waiting for it to come in, but I didn't I was I I didn't know the uh it was the physics of the truck bed is you need to have something to stop it from moving.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: Yes, yeah, it it we didn't have all the trash in there to keep it secure, yeah.
- 9:02SPEAKER_01: Because you didn't have a paint vehicle, right, in the beginning.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: Um so when we when like when we were starting out and you had your Jimmy, I had an 05 uh Subaru uh uh Impreza stick shift, and that was that was lovely because my first car like from like high school and stuff was in 1987 BMW 735i, which looked cool, especially in the rain.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: Um, but uh and I was like a janitor and stuff and I would pull in in that car.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: Uh but it just like every any it broke all the time and everything that broke on it was like$900 to fix, which was a big deal when I was a young lad and had no money.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: Um, and then I when I went to college, I think when I was a freshman, you're not allowed to have a car you weren't allowed to have a car.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: Uh and then I like I talked to our dad and I was like, hey, if I don't get a car, I'm gonna kill everyone here.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: And he's like, Yeah, let's uh let's get you so he got me like an exemption so I could get a car.
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: Uh and then I got that 05 Subaru, which was so nice comparative to brand new, too.
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: It was so sweet.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: Um, and it cost me like the lease payment was so low.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: So I just like that was great.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: And so that's what I rocked around with when we were kind of first going around, which was great.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: Uh, you know, I didn't bring in money paint materials.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: I didn't trash mine out, I just had like my paintbag.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: You just put stuff in the trunk, and I kind of did college with that vehicle, and then I think I think after I graduated, yeah, yeah, because I got my first like work truck was uh 2009 Toyota Tacoma, and it was uh black four-door with the six-foot bed, and that was a great truck.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: So and I got a cap on it, and then I was it's so like the history between Josh and I is uh Josh doesn't like to spend money or buy cool stuff, and then I buy cool stuff, and then Josh is like, Where'd you get that cool thing?
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: And then he copies me on the next thing he buys, which is what happens.
- 11:00SPEAKER_01: Um you do all the research for me, it's great.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: So uh, and then I had so your when you had your frontier, it wasn't a two-door, it was like a two-door where you had those little Well had a jump seats in the back jump seats and you had the doors that opened the other way, like the little half doors or whatever.
- 11:16SPEAKER_01: I count it as a two-door because you could barely put anything in the back.
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but it was like you had like a little bit of space behind there, but then when you got your cap when you got your cap on your truck, you only had you those side windows didn't open.
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: And I was like, that's that sucks.
- 11:34SPEAKER_01: You had to crawl all the way in the back to get it.
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: And the bed was like decently deep in that truck, too.
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: Like it was great.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: Six foot bed.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: Uh, but so it's like hard to get the stuff, and you're always like scurrying over like a mound of trash to get the stuff and whatever.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: I was like, okay, so when I got my Tacoma, I got a uh um I got the windows that actually open up on the sides, which just made it so much easier to get to everything.
- 11:59SPEAKER_00: So that was sweet, and then uh I think then I then I my next truck was a 2011 uh Tacoma was like same exact truck, but I got a TRD sport because I wanted the hood scoop because that was gonna be cool.
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: And it was like silver four-door with and then I was able to I I think the dealership actually took my cap and got it painted, and they just because it was like a deal.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: They wanted they wanted to sell me this truck.
- 12:28SPEAKER_01: You wanted to get a new new fancy truck, even though your old one was perfectly fine.
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and they they really wanted to they wanted my truck really bad, like that the toco.
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: So they gave me a good deal on getting into the new one.
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: Um, so then I rocked around in that silver one for quite a while, and then you had your frontier for a long time.
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: So you had it from like because you bought it out, I think.
- 12:50SPEAKER_01: I did, so I leased it to start because when you lease the payments are a bit less.
- 12:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: You do pay higher sales tax, which you find out, but I was like, you know, I just want to get into this inexpensively.
- 12:59SPEAKER_01: And then when the lease ran up after three years, I bought it out, and the math made sense where the payment was super low to buy it out.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I think I usually would end up paying it off early.
- 13:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:08SPEAKER_01: I'm not a big I'm not a big debt guy, and so I uh I paid it off early, and then I had it, and then it was great, and I took it to about 113, 114,000 miles, and then it just died.
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: Well, you got the uh what what the Nissan people call a milkshake, which is where the radiator fluid leaks into the transmission fluid and like combines, and then the transmission just goes.
- 13:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so the it went, it just I was remember riding and it just lost all power and I just coasted into some rando place, yeah, like it was an insurance building.
- 13:38SPEAKER_01: I'm like, what's going on?
- 13:39SPEAKER_01: And then I had to get towed, and or maybe I I don't even know what happened to it, but anyway, it was just done, like it was completely totaled, and my car lost all value overnight.
- 13:50SPEAKER_01: And they're like, and then I remember went to Nissa, I'm like, oh yeah, this kind of happens for those vehicles for Pathfinders and Frontiers of a certain level of my model.
- 13:58SPEAKER_01: Yep, and I was warrantied up to a hundred thousand.
- 14:01SPEAKER_01: I think I was like a hundred and thirteen or a hundred and fifteen.
- 14:03SPEAKER_01: I'm like, yeah, you guys could have let me know and I would have dumped this thing, yeah, like six months earlier, a year earlier.
- 14:10SPEAKER_01: And so I was they're like, Well, you want to get a new one?
- 14:13SPEAKER_01: Frontier?
- 14:14SPEAKER_01: I'm like, no, no, I do not.
- 14:16SPEAKER_01: And then the big deal, the big deal was I'm like, I knew I wanted four doors.
- 14:19SPEAKER_01: That was the big thing.
- 14:20SPEAKER_01: Because there's because at this point we were well established in our paint business.
- 14:24SPEAKER_01: I was doing this full time, you were we're you're full-time with me, you're a bus uh partner in the business.
- 14:29SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 14:29SPEAKER_01: And I think I I was even married at this point, but I was like, I need a four-door vehicle.
- 14:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because my my Tacoma was four doors.
- 14:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and that was the big like some when you have a four-door, the nice thing is like, because when you run a paint company or construction, you can either have a work vehicle and a personal vehicle, or I said, or I could just combine it, and the best combo we found was a truck, six-foot bed, cap on it, because then you can put any ladder, we could get all the stuff in there, and a four-door truck.
- 14:58SPEAKER_01: Because then you could put other people in it for traveling, and it's pretty, pretty big in there.
- 15:03SPEAKER_01: And the nice thing with the Tacoma at the time, and still probably now, is that it wasn't so big that we couldn't park in residential areas, or even we would do some city work, and it wasn't so big that we couldn't get anywhere, but it was not so small that like it it it worked for us.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and I think the that's kind of the trade-off too with what I want to talk about is like kind of if you had to build out another truck now, what would you like where would you go with that?
- 15:30SPEAKER_00: But like, we'll stay with what we have right now, because I uh a personal vehicle and a work truck, it just really depends on what your work truck is like.
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: If you're rocking around in a van, you probably want something else.
- 15:44SPEAKER_00: Uh, but then like if you have a wife, then they have a car, yeah, and that kind of becomes your rock around car.
- 15:49SPEAKER_01: And extra insurance if you have if you have two, I'd rather have just one vehicle than two.
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: If I can make that work.
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: And then from a business perspective, and this might not be the best way to do it.
- 16:01SPEAKER_00: What we have found is that we just write off our mileage for business-wise, because I mean guys that are watching this are probably painting professionally or aspiring to.
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: Uh and there's like probably I don't we haven't really found a better way.
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: I don't know how much time we've spent on it as far as like, because guys will do it where they like I know you can write off the depreciation and that kind of stuff if the business owns the vehicle, but then you can get into like gray areas where you're really only supposed to be using the vehicle for business uses.
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: So then, you know, if you're just driving around doing your it's it just becomes like a little bit uh messy if you start to you know take your vehicle down a vacation or something.
- 16:42SPEAKER_00: You're not supposed to do that.
- 16:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so so and even if you like some of the um when you're growing your business, what like everyone's like, oh, you gotta get a truck and you expense it, like a big truck, yeah, because there's special write-offs and stuff, but it's still an expense.
- 16:56SPEAKER_01: And instead of if you can get it, have one vehicle instead of two, then that's one less ins like that's one less inspection.
- 17:03SPEAKER_01: You have to get your couple extra less oil changes, and then it's less car insurance because car like if you don't use your car, you still have to pay car insurance for it.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: And then don't you have to like if you get a a business because I know we looked into this before, uh if you get a work truck that's for like owned by your business or whatever, however, it's it's it's under that umbrella, isn't the insurance more?
- 17:25SPEAKER_01: A lot of sense, because if it's if you're on the commercial, like hey, a business owned this, it's all commercial, and a lot of times the insurance is a bit higher, like, oh, this is a commercial use vehicle.
- 17:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like my our vehicles now, they're just like, Yeah, it's just our daily driver.
- 17:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's normal insurance, normal everything.
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: And the nice thing is we don't have to maintain an extra vehicle, right?
- 17:43SPEAKER_01: Unless you really want to do that, which guys will do that, and then they'll have their own work truck or their own work vehicle.
- 17:48SPEAKER_01: But I'd rather just spend less money on you know depreciating assets and keep more money.
- 17:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:53SPEAKER_01: I like keeping the money.
- 17:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so then after your frontier went kaputz, you went and you got a 2015 Toyota Tacoma Tier D sport white, and that's like kind of that's still what you have right now.
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: It is how many miles are on that thing?
- 18:07SPEAKER_01: 1919 or so.
- 18:09SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 18:10SPEAKER_01: It's been the best truck I've ever owned.
- 18:12SPEAKER_01: So because that's like paid off.
- 18:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:14SPEAKER_01: And lat I have I just outfitted like you outfitted your truck.
- 18:18SPEAKER_01: So we've had issues with our caps leaking.
- 18:20SPEAKER_01: My frontier cap never leaked, but this one does a little bit.
- 18:24SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 18:24SPEAKER_01: But overall, it's it has been.
- 18:26SPEAKER_01: You're gonna need to get a new cap soon.
- 18:28SPEAKER_01: I know.
- 18:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:29SPEAKER_01: But it's like he's still working right now.
- 18:32SPEAKER_01: Barely.
- 18:33SPEAKER_00: It there barely.
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: Dude, your your your crossbars are starting to come off.
- 18:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know, it's just another two two to three grand I'd rather keep for a while.
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: Josh waits until something like legitimately just explodes before he replaces it.
- 18:47SPEAKER_00: So and then when I so I had my you you have the truck, I had my 2011 Tacoma for a while, and then I was like just feeling dumb.
- 19:01SPEAKER_00: I like I like change and I like to upgrade and do stuff, and then I was like, okay, I'm gonna like make this truck cool.
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: And uh also I had done, yeah, oh, because it was that truck.
- 19:12SPEAKER_00: Uh Josh and I were roommates living together, uh uh and we're brothers, so it's it's it's whatever.
- 19:20SPEAKER_00: Uh and then we we're not weird.
- 19:24SPEAKER_00: I mean, we are a little weird, but uh, and then you we were like fight training together, paint training, all like doing all this stuff, and like painting, doing jujitsu, mutai, all that stuff, and then you had the audacity to start dating a woman, and I was like, oh, and then I knew I knew you were gonna marry that chick, which you did.
- 19:44SPEAKER_00: And I was three kids.
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: I was so mad because we were saving to like buy a house, yeah, and like invest in a house, and then I was like out of like spite and fury, I bought like an eight thousand dollar stereo and had it installed in my truck.
- 19:58SPEAKER_00: It it's sick.
- 19:59SPEAKER_00: I still have it in my my truck I have now.
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: Um but three months after I started dating my girl, you started dating now your wife.
- 20:05SPEAKER_01: I did.
- 20:05SPEAKER_01: So there you go.
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: Now you're two kids.
- 20:07SPEAKER_00: I probably wouldn't have pulled the trigger on that stereo if I knew how expensive shit I'm gonna be.
- 20:11SPEAKER_00: Uh but uh it it but then what I did later is that I was like, okay, I'm gonna I needed uh like new tires and a bunch of stuff.
- 20:20SPEAKER_00: So I was like, uh my my buddy had like a normal mechanic shop, like not specializing in what I'm talking about now.
- 20:30SPEAKER_00: So I was like, I'll I'll get new rims and like kind of beefier tires and stuff.
- 20:36SPEAKER_00: So I I did that, and then I didn't I don't now I know way more about modifying vehicles.
- 20:41SPEAKER_00: Uh so this is dumb if anyone is listening to this that like knows about cars and stuff.
- 20:46SPEAKER_00: I didn't do like a leveling kit, and there's like other things you need to do.
- 20:50SPEAKER_00: You really need to like make sure things are balanced.
- 20:52SPEAKER_00: If you're gonna put bigger tires on your truck, you you don't want to just do that.
- 20:56SPEAKER_00: It ruined the ride quality, and so and I think it like bent something in the frame, or just it started riding really poorly, and I was like, ooh, and so I had them like swap everything back to stock, and uh, I think we were able to like return the rims and stuff because I barely had them on there for any amount of time, and then I bought a uh 2017 Tacoma, which was the Gen 3, it was like the second year of that model, uh but same, but I got it like m exactly how I wanted murdered out, it was all black.
- 21:31SPEAKER_00: I had my stereo put in it, I got a new cap with like the side windows that open up, and that's what I have right now.
- 21:39SPEAKER_00: Um, and that vehicle has been that like all the Tacomas I've had, I've had zero issues with, unless I screwed with it.
- 21:47SPEAKER_00: Uh and uh like one of our beefs that I talk about all the time now is like if you had to buy a work truck right now, like and th that's kind of the thing we've talked about before, is like what do we want to work out of.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: And uh I don't like working out of although I haven't tried, I haven't worked out of like a van.
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: And and then there's all kinds of vans that are out now.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: You have like the ones from Ram and like p pick a company, Ram, Chevy, Ford, they all have like different vans you can get.
- 22:18SPEAKER_00: A lot of the carpenters we work with, they have kind of the like the tall vans, because you have a lot of space to like rock around in there.
- 22:26SPEAKER_00: Uh, and then they usually have like shelves and some kind of storage thing that's that's next to it.
- 22:30SPEAKER_00: And then I've noticed a lot of some painters have the little like more squattier, like lower vans.
- 22:36SPEAKER_00: Because with painting, unless you're doing some kind of like where you need to rack like a crazy amount of ladders, like you ever see a roofing van or a roofing truck, yeah.
- 22:46SPEAKER_00: They're like weighted down, they have just stacks and stacks and stacks of ladders.
- 22:50SPEAKER_00: So like they're but they're driving like you know, like a 3500, like some huge truck to like that can support all that weight.
- 22:58SPEAKER_00: Painting, you don't you have you have gear, but it's not usually like first off, the tools aren't that expensive, and then it's not usually super heavy, unless you're leaving a lot of ladders racked all the time, which we typically don't.
- 23:11SPEAKER_00: We rack our ladders.
- 23:16SPEAKER_01: Or like scaffolds, scaffold, yeah, that kind of stuff.
- 23:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 23:18SPEAKER_00: So but like I'm just with a and I probably probably the most ubiquitous painter vehicle is a van.
- 23:25SPEAKER_00: Like that's kind of what but the thing I don't like about them is that usually the cabin where you actually sit and drive is separate from it it's not separated from all the stuff in the back.
- 23:36SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 23:37SPEAKER_00: And if it is, you still have it's usually open as far as like sometimes they have like a grate across it or like a cage.
- 23:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 23:45SPEAKER_00: Uh but if you have what I don't like about that is that if you have solvents or you have like how many times has stuff spilled over in the back mineral spirits, stain, acetone, any of that stuff.
- 23:55SPEAKER_00: Even the rags back there that you break.
- 23:57SPEAKER_00: Stuff can stink, and then you're like driving around in that.
- 24:00SPEAKER_00: I I like being separated from that stuff.
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: So because I'm I'm kind of always I like vehicles and getting new new stuff, but I don't I right now I still don't have a better solution than basically some sort of truck with a with a cap on it.
- 24:16SPEAKER_00: Um so if you were like if my truck exploded today and I like had to go get do you know what you would try and get right now if you had to go if your truck exploded and then you had to go buy a new one?
- 24:28SPEAKER_01: I would just be like, can we save my current truck and maybe redo some things on the inside?
- 24:33SPEAKER_01: Because I love my truck.
- 24:34SPEAKER_01: There's no there's not much technology in it.
- 24:37SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 24:37SPEAKER_01: And it's not like Bings is oh, we got like a newer car with with my wife and my when kid number three came.
- 24:44SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 24:44SPEAKER_01: And there's so many bings and t and it just all this assistance stuff, and it would turn it all off, and then it'll it'll start beeping for no reason because it thinks a kid's in the back.
- 24:53SPEAKER_01: I'm like, dude, mine has a key turn still, like not even a button you push.
- 24:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 24:57SPEAKER_01: It's fantastic.
- 24:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I love it.
- 24:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean that's it just works.
- 25:01SPEAKER_00: And a lot, so like I think my Tacoma when I got it was like 38 or something, which is like had a decent amount of stuff on it.
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: Mine was 33, 33.
- 25:13SPEAKER_00: But that was 2015.
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:15SPEAKER_00: So, and then now, if you were just trying to replace it with a Tacoma, uh, which I've driven the new ones because they like the place I get my truck service, that's their kind of their loner vehicles or the new Tacomas.
- 25:28SPEAKER_00: Uh, they they like smushed that truck, like it's cramped inside.
- 25:33SPEAKER_00: They made the cab, like the back seats almost don't exist even in the four-door, and they're like that's like 50 grand for our trim level.
- 25:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:41SPEAKER_00: Uh and we're recording this in 2026 right now.
- 25:44SPEAKER_00: And then if anyone's punched around and looked at like because I've thought about for my family, because it is my um it is my like daily driver as well, and then you have kids, that's the thing too, is like you're not gonna throw kids in a work van.
- 26:00SPEAKER_00: No.
- 26:00SPEAKER_00: Um, where like you have a cabin where you have four doors that's completely isolated from all the crap in the back.
- 26:06SPEAKER_00: Uh like I'm like, okay, should I I would want some more cabin space, so I've thought about upgrading to like a full-size truck, which would be like the 15, like a tundra or whatever.
- 26:19SPEAKER_00: But the new tundras have a what's happening now is that they're making the engines smaller, they're putting two turbos on them, and they're having all kinds of issues uh because of all the regulations, and things are supposed to have better mileage and blah blah blah blah blah.
- 26:34SPEAKER_00: Uh, and then they're having a lot of problems with these, you know, bi-turbo six-cylinder engines uh that are not reliable.
- 26:42SPEAKER_00: The gas mileage still isn't great, uh, and then the you have to make sure you service them right like you cannot miss an oil change or that thing will explode.
- 26:51SPEAKER_00: And the tundras have had like an insane amount of recalls, which that's probably the biggest uh a bummer because the Gen 2 Tundras was like was it's still lauded as one of the most reliable trucks ever made, uh, with that the V8 they had in that vehicle.
- 27:11SPEAKER_00: So like I was like, dang, I should have gotten one of those on the because it's like a full size and that truck was just bulletproof, and there's not that much going on.
- 27:21SPEAKER_00: Uh so if you're looking to get a new truck, uh I like I would look at like the second gen Tundra is a good move.
- 27:29SPEAKER_00: And then now if I had to go get something, uh Ram has a really good warranty.
- 27:35SPEAKER_00: And in 2027, they're bringing back the Hemi uh V8, which they they have a high output and a standard output twin turbo V6 and all of their 1500s right now, but the jury's kind of out on that as to whether or not those are gonna explode, they tend to like overheat when you tow and do stuff.
- 27:54SPEAKER_00: And then and then what like if I watch a lot of YouTube where like mechanics are talking about the internals, and they're like, um, if you are a person that is turning your truck off and on a lot and running a lot of errands, the twin turbo v6 is like not great.
- 28:10SPEAKER_00: Uh which I'm like, that's that's like all we do.
- 28:14SPEAKER_00: Like you drive your truck around a lot.
- 28:16SPEAKER_00: Like it's not always just like, oh, I just start up once and then I cruise on the highway and then cut it off.
- 28:21SPEAKER_00: Um so uh yeah, I'm I'm still I'm like right now I'm just gonna hold on to my truck because I have about I'm a little less mileage than you.
- 28:32SPEAKER_00: I'm like 105,000, something like that.
- 28:34SPEAKER_00: But still no issues, it's pulling strong, no get you from A to B, man.
- 28:39SPEAKER_00: So uh but I've I've thought about I think this is probably the trade-off that some guys might think about too, is that if you have a like if you're not gonna do a van, I don't really know the alternative besides like you kind of either have van or truck would be the working vehicle you'd be looking into.
- 28:58SPEAKER_00: You could technically get like the only other thing is you could get like a box truck, so you could get like a Ford 250 or 350 and then have some kind of custom box built on the back.
- 29:08SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 29:08SPEAKER_00: Uh which I've seen guys have those.
- 29:10SPEAKER_00: It's not, it's it's an investment, those are very expensive.
- 29:13SPEAKER_00: Like my buddy Trevor has one uh for his tile business, yeah.
- 29:16SPEAKER_00: But he's hauling around like he's got a lot of tools and stuff, uh saws and all that.
- 29:22SPEAKER_00: Saws, and you gotta have, you know, they have like a canopy they pull out and all that jazz.
- 29:26SPEAKER_00: Uh, I think a lot of painters are probably rocking some sort of pickup truck where they can clear the bed out and haul different things.
- 29:33SPEAKER_00: Because even us, like we'll clear out all our stuff and we'll like we'll put the baker scaffold in your truck and bring it to the job site or a pressure washer or whatever.
- 29:42SPEAKER_01: Um, you just got to be able to bring what you need to the job.
- 29:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 29:46SPEAKER_01: Uh, and it's also better if you're like, hey, my monthly car payment is say if it's five hundred dollars versus oh now I have two vehicles, now it's eight hundred dollars.
- 29:56SPEAKER_01: It doesn't make you any money if you're like two vehicles is more expensive than one.
- 30:00SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 30:01SPEAKER_01: That's what it comes down to.
- 30:02SPEAKER_01: It's a depre it's an asset, it's not an asset, it's a liability as far as an investment goes.
- 30:06SPEAKER_01: Not like, oh, I own two shares of Microsoft instead of one.
- 30:10SPEAKER_01: It's like, no, this thing is going down in value, it just costs you money, but you need to have you need to be able to get your supplies and ladders and scaffolding um to the job.
- 30:19SPEAKER_01: And then if you like have a crew of dudes, like yeah, that's when like we know the bigger crews have a couple work trucks.
- 30:25SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 30:25SPEAKER_01: And then they're like they're getting the vans with all the stuff on it.
- 30:28SPEAKER_01: And they like two guys will take it and come back.
- 30:31SPEAKER_01: Yep, yep.
- 30:32SPEAKER_01: Depends on where you are in your your business journey.
- 30:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and also I would say having a having a truck uh that's four-wheel drive and then a can like a cap on the back is one of it's the most useful vehicle I've ever owned.
- 30:47SPEAKER_00: It's so useful.
- 30:48SPEAKER_00: We we use it all the time to like haul stuff around for our kids, pick stuff up, like your family members find out, they're like, oh, you have a truck with a cap.
- 30:56SPEAKER_01: Because then vacation comes, I'm like usually loading up at someone's house for all the stuff.
- 31:01SPEAKER_00: And then I have a hard rule that I do not help anyone move.
- 31:05SPEAKER_00: You have a truck and a cap and a cap.
- 31:08SPEAKER_00: Be like, oh yeah, you come out.
- 31:09SPEAKER_00: I'm like, nope.
- 31:10SPEAKER_00: I'm like, listen, I will, I I I don't do this anymore because I have a family and I have crap to do, but like I now I'm just like, I'll help I'll paint something when you move into your spot, but I'm not moving anything.
- 31:21SPEAKER_00: That's just not something I enjoy.
- 31:23SPEAKER_00: We got asked to move lot because we were young strapping men with two trucks.
- 31:26SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 31:27SPEAKER_00: And and if you're a painter, you're basically a semi-professional furniture mover as well.
- 31:32SPEAKER_00: Because you're always going to be moving crap around people's homes.
- 31:35SPEAKER_00: Um, but I'll throw this out there for for guys that are uh in the market for a new vehicle.
- 31:41SPEAKER_00: Uh, one of the trucks, which even though we crapped on it earlier, the new Nissan Frontier is a really solid platform.
- 31:50SPEAKER_00: They've gotten, they've pretty much ironed out all of the chinks in that truck, and it's kind of one of the last V6 standard.
- 31:58SPEAKER_00: It there's not a lot on it.
- 32:00SPEAKER_00: It is just a truck.
- 32:01SPEAKER_00: You can get a six and a half foot bed, like quad cab truck, and they make plenty of caps for that vehicle.
- 32:09SPEAKER_00: And it's our dad just got one.
- 32:11SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 32:11SPEAKER_00: Um, and it's a it's a great truck, it's nothing fancy, there's not a lot of tech on it, there's not stuff that dings and bings and does all kinds of crap.
- 32:20SPEAKER_00: So, like, that's a good platform.
- 32:22SPEAKER_00: And then if I was going to whatever truck I would get, uh, I would get the quad cap, get the biggest cab you can get, the biggest bed you can get, like at least six, six and a half feet.
- 32:32SPEAKER_00: Minimum six foot.
- 32:33SPEAKER_00: And then the caps, that there's have been a lot of improvements in caps since Josh and I got the ones that we have now.
- 32:39SPEAKER_00: Uh, I would take a look at Smart Cap.
- 32:41SPEAKER_00: Uh, they're not a sponsor or anything, that's just kind of where I would go.
- 32:44SPEAKER_00: Uh, they're a little more expensive, but they're made their whole pitch is like it's made like a truck, not a boat, because most of the caps, like the caps that we have are fiberglass, uh, which they don't hold up as long as your truck does.
- 32:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because it's they just tend to leak and all that.
- 33:00SPEAKER_00: But the smart cap is made from metal, and then the way you can rig that out, the one I would do, I think it's called the Adventurer, where it has the the side windows are not windows, they're just uh uh solid metal, and they they're they take up way more uh height from the side of the cap and they open up a lot, so it's like super easy to get in and stuff, and you can put um bins in the side where you can actually have shelves that pull out on the side of your truck, and you can do it on both sides or one side.
- 33:34SPEAKER_00: Nice.
- 33:34SPEAKER_00: Uh, so that gives you a lot of utility, is still, and you can have the rhino racks on them, which are the racks that I have on my cap, and those are great racks, they're very grippy, uh, and they're just like super sturdy.
- 33:46SPEAKER_00: But that smart cap is sick, and then you they they just have some cool features that you can do with that, and they only come in like a matte black, uh, but it looks cool, like it's very, it's very like kind of aggressive looking.
- 33:57SPEAKER_00: Um, but my buddy has one on his F-150, and it looks cool, and it just gives you a lot of space, very durable, and you can lock it.
- 34:04SPEAKER_00: There's a lot of good like safety features in there.
- 34:07SPEAKER_00: Um, and then if you want to go with something that has even more kind of specialty use, uh decked has these drawer systems that install in the bed of your truck and they go all the way to the back, so you can pull them out and have things.
- 34:22SPEAKER_00: That was something I was looking into.
- 34:24SPEAKER_00: Just the problem with any of those organizer things is you start losing a lot of bed space.
- 34:29SPEAKER_00: So it tends to be better, you can be a little bit more organized, uh, but then you use you lose some utility for perhaps things that aren't painting, or you know, if you have to fit something tall, like a pressure washer or something, you're gonna lose a little headroom in there.
- 34:45SPEAKER_00: So that's my that's my hot take on just like if you were gonna build out a truck, that's kind of what I would go for.
- 34:52SPEAKER_00: And not get a van.
- 34:53SPEAKER_00: I I wouldn't get a van because also most of the vans, like you're uh four-wheel drive is really nice because we're we're in the northeast, we get a lot of weather, and and we never we don't we just go straight out in the snow when we Yeah, we never have to take off because it's snow.
- 35:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and if you're in a rear-wheel drive van, yeah, you're on the a lot of the guys that are in that setup, they don't make it to the job site and they're just taking the day off.
- 35:16SPEAKER_00: So that's uh yeah, kind of well.
- 35:19SPEAKER_01: The nice thing is you don't have the when you have a van, you pretty much gonna have to get another car.
- 35:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 35:24SPEAKER_01: Or and if you it's just nice, like I can just take my truck out, it's just filled with paint stuff in the back, but you know, I just shut the uh shut the cap and it's fine and I can do whatever else I want to do, and it's just one one one set of insurance.
- 35:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 35:37SPEAKER_00: Josh is just concerned with keeping the payments low, which I I totally understand.
- 35:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but well, I like keeping more money than spending that because you know people have like, you know, did you ever see the YouTube videos where I can what's your truck payment?
- 35:47SPEAKER_01: Like$1,200,$1,300.
- 35:49SPEAKER_01: Like good luck with that.
- 35:50SPEAKER_00: Well, I mean, now it's shit.
- 35:51SPEAKER_00: If you got a new truck now, I mean the Tacoma's I that's what's nice about the Frontier.
- 35:56SPEAKER_00: The new Frontier is you can get a loaded frontier for like$40, which is pretty darn good.
- 36:02SPEAKER_00: Super reasonable, yeah.
- 36:03SPEAKER_00: Uh, but like if you I've priced the new$1,500, any like the the new Tundras, the the all these F-150s, bro, you're gonna spend$6570 on like not even a they're not as reliable, not even if you could take it to$150,000, 200,000 miles with like hey, no, no problem, then it's worth the investment.
- 36:23SPEAKER_01: But if it's gonna poop out on you at 100k, what a waste of money.
- 36:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but if that's the only option, what can you do?
- 36:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so that's it all and then they're stacking more and more tech in these things, which you don't need.
- 36:36SPEAKER_00: No, um, so just want it to work, man.
- 36:39SPEAKER_00: Just you don't want it to be a problem.
- 36:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's the last thing I just want my truck to cut on and get me there.
- 36:43SPEAKER_00: And then I would just say if you're if you're kind of starting out, just work with whatever you have and then you know, check out the used market.
- 36:52SPEAKER_01: Yes, the used market.
- 36:54SPEAKER_01: I know all the big contractors were like I get my truck used from this person over here, and there's more maintenance sometimes, but I mean depends on what you I mean.
- 37:02SPEAKER_01: If I mean if you bought a 10-year-old truck for$10,000, which our buddy Nick just got one for his crew.
- 37:08SPEAKER_01: Okay, yeah, he's like I'm paying$13,000 for it, but it's not sixty thousand.
- 37:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you can you there's a little more margin, like you can put another ten into it and you're still doing better.
- 37:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and especially uh a lot of the new fancy trucks have a ton of recalls, so then you're constantly giving it, bringing it back to the dealership.
- 37:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 37:26SPEAKER_00: Well, now you don't have your truck to work out of, and that's a big pain in the ass because that's costing you money.
- 37:32SPEAKER_00: It's costing you money to go get a service, then it's costing you money because you're not in the field working, and you don't have all your stuff.
- 37:37SPEAKER_00: So we just want it to not be a problem.
- 37:39SPEAKER_00: So that's our that's kind of my my Josh hears me prattle on about trucks and how pissed off I am about all these.
- 37:44SPEAKER_00: For well, they've gotten more expensive and they've gotten less reliable.
- 37:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 37:48SPEAKER_00: That's two things you don't want to happen.
- 37:49SPEAKER_00: And it used to be they got better and better every year, and then with all these regulations, which they have rolled it back somewhat because the they've relaxed a bit, but yeah, it's there's there's no like top of the heap, like, oh man, I so want that right now.
- 38:05SPEAKER_01: But the frontier is a good choice if you're kind of looking best bang for your buck and reliability from what we've seen so far.
- 38:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, or or a previous gen Tacoma.
- 38:13SPEAKER_00: The new Tacomas, I heard they're very reliable.
- 38:16SPEAKER_00: I just don't like the powertrain on that.
- 38:17SPEAKER_00: They're really burbly and annoying.
- 38:19SPEAKER_00: Like the the engine's constantly doing stuff.
- 38:22SPEAKER_00: Um, but like a gen, I guess it's a gen three Tacoma, the one that I have, those are great, especially the ones that are a little bit uh in the later production runs.
- 38:32SPEAKER_00: That's a great truck.
- 38:33SPEAKER_00: They're still really pricey for what they are, but those are like built like a brick shit house, and then Gen 2 Tundra, great move.
- 38:40SPEAKER_00: Uh, if you want a little bit bigger platform, um, and then like the new frontier.
- 38:44SPEAKER_00: That's kind of like my hot take.
- 38:46SPEAKER_00: Also, the last gen uh Nissan Titan, which they don't make anymore, but though they got those trucks dialed.
- 38:53SPEAKER_00: It is just a stupid V8, and it there's nothing on that truck, just where it's just a stereo and a four, like there's not a lot of problems with those vehicles.
- 39:03SPEAKER_00: So um, and then if you get into the American stuff, you really have to do your due diligence on what powertrain you're getting with the transmission and the engine and all of that.
- 39:13SPEAKER_00: So that's my hot take on all of that.
- 39:15SPEAKER_00: But no, I'm I'm not real excited about I'm really looking at minivans right now, so that's my my next little flora.
- 39:22SPEAKER_00: Um, so should we go to the the goo news?
- 39:25SPEAKER_01: Goo news.
- 39:25SPEAKER_01: So goo news is for the folks who have joined the goo crew, and uh so if you're listening to this and you haven't joined the goo crew, do it, it's it's gonna be awesome.
- 39:34SPEAKER_01: It's on a hosted on school, and we have a lot of guys in here commenting.
- 39:37SPEAKER_01: So we have Travis Dixon, he was commenting on should he spray or brush brush and roll an exterior, and a bunch of guys chimed in, uh, gave their two cents, and then he went and he's more of a brush and roller guy, but he bought a brand new sprayer, which a lot of people have.
- 39:54SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 39:54SPEAKER_01: And he said, I just went with brush and rolling because I knew I could deliver it and it would work, kind of go percentage win.
- 40:01SPEAKER_01: So he did it, and then he's like at the odds of me getting more work from this guy are high, so he didn't want to screw it up.
- 40:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 40:06SPEAKER_00: So he did that, and then uh Well, he was worried, he was considering spraying, yes.
- 40:10SPEAKER_01: He considering spraying because a lot of guys have bought a sprayer and they're like, I have one.
- 40:14SPEAKER_01: We did that too, but now I feel like I should spray, but I've haven't sprayed much, so it's kind of one of those things where like where are you gonna take the plunge and try it?
- 40:22SPEAKER_01: And then if it doesn't go well, which we've had some not go well, had a few go well, um, and then you're like, I don't want to screw this job up, versus I know like my bad average at brush and roll are super high.
- 40:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and there are jobs that you know are better to be sprayed, but just for for the guys listening, our buddy Nick has a crew of like 20 and 20.
- 40:40SPEAKER_00: 22 guys, he's got like 15 sprayers, and we were talking to him the other day, like, how much are you spraying right now?
- 40:46SPEAKER_00: He's like barely at all.
- 40:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so like you don't do all kinds of work, you don't have to, is what I'm saying.
- 40:51SPEAKER_01: Like, and then our uh our guy Todd in the group, he uh was awesome and showed a picture of his work truck, uh, since we're speaking about trucks, and I think he wins for most stuff packed in there and uh probably has to do a little reorganization.
- 41:05SPEAKER_01: Dude, I sent him a picture of mine.
- 41:07SPEAKER_01: Mine's bad right now, but it's uh not as bad as Todd.
- 41:10SPEAKER_01: So that was pretty good.
- 41:11SPEAKER_00: Josh is routinely disgusting, which is odd because I feel like you're a little bit more organized than I am, but I think I've surpassed you recently.
- 41:18SPEAKER_01: I just haven't put the time to like clean it out and get back to it.
- 41:21SPEAKER_01: You're good about cleaning out your truck, you're very good about it.
- 41:23SPEAKER_00: It bothers me.
- 41:24SPEAKER_00: I like it to be nice, particularly in the cabin, but like even I've just because it's if we're we're working so much right now, the cleaner your stuff is, the less crap you have in there, the more organized you are, the faster you're gonna get through the work.
- 41:36SPEAKER_00: And then I've just I've like I've started to eliminate the things in my truck that I am not using, and I've been like way more ruthless with like culling things that I'm not using so that I have less stuff that I've been a lot better at that.
- 41:49SPEAKER_00: So I try to keep usually you need some like bins in there to store and things, but I've just cut down the amount of stuff in there and it's been going way better.
- 41:57SPEAKER_00: So that's my hot take.
- 41:59SPEAKER_00: But yeah, Todd needs to drive that thing to a dumpster and just get like he should do like a J turn and e-break it with the bed open and the cap open and just let it all slide out.
- 42:10SPEAKER_01: Start over.
- 42:12SPEAKER_01: And then we'll end with uh James Biernat.
- 42:16SPEAKER_01: I don't I'm might be you're mispronouncing that.
- 42:18SPEAKER_01: Uh he was doing a cabinet estimate and he was wondering if he should spray it or roll it, I believe.
- 42:23SPEAKER_01: And uh there's like 11 comments from a bunch of guys in the group, and then he ended up going with brush and roller, and uh, I believe it turned out well.
- 42:31SPEAKER_01: I'm kind of scrolling to the bottom.
- 42:32SPEAKER_00: So did he say what pro product he used?
- 42:34SPEAKER_01: Uh I'm not because I think I gave him a few pictures.
- 42:38SPEAKER_01: He used gallery primer and gallery paint, brush and roll the boxes and face frames, and then oh, he sprayed the doors.
- 42:46SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 42:46SPEAKER_01: So, okay, that's what he did, and then he had some pictures of it.
- 42:49SPEAKER_01: Uh actually, no what that's uh that was Todd.
- 42:54SPEAKER_01: Sorry, that was Todd explaining what he did because he sprays cabinets.
- 42:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 42:58SPEAKER_01: Um, so Todd was showing pictures.
- 42:59SPEAKER_01: Sorry, he was commenting to James.
- 43:01SPEAKER_01: That was just cool as guys will kind of go back and forth and say, like, what are you doing?
- 43:05SPEAKER_01: And then I will be uh releasing a pricing module in the classroom, first one uh this week.
- 43:11SPEAKER_01: So before on vacation.
- 43:12SPEAKER_01: Are you actually gonna do that?
- 43:13SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna do it.
- 43:14SPEAKER_01: I it's in my I'm gonna get it done, and it's gonna be out there.
- 43:17SPEAKER_00: It's like uh the brief history of this podcast is Josh telling people he's gonna build the thing, and then he's like, Oh, I guess that's not what I'm gonna do.
- 43:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 43:25SPEAKER_01: So that it's it's on there, it's on my list, it's gonna get done before I go on vacation.
- 43:29SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 43:29SPEAKER_01: So I promise it will be there.
- 43:31SPEAKER_01: Cool, cool.
- 43:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and I'll say with uh like the cabinets and stuff, those ones uh you if you're spraying cabinets is like a pretty technical thing to do, like you can really screw that up.
- 43:44SPEAKER_00: Um, so uh, and it just depends on how deep you want to take that, but you can get pretty far with brush and roller.
- 43:50SPEAKER_00: Uh Ben Shellac and Emerald Urethane are a great combo.
- 43:53SPEAKER_00: And then uh like Todd uses Gallery.
- 43:56SPEAKER_00: Gallery is spray only, and I've used that product a decent like I used it on a big job where I sprayed.
- 44:02SPEAKER_00: Um, what's nice about Gallery is they tuned that paint to go through an HVLP sprayer, uh especially the newer HVLPs that spray, they're like 11.5 PSI.
- 44:12SPEAKER_00: Um, and that's not as daunting of a thing as like an airless.
- 44:16SPEAKER_00: You're not gonna go through as much product, there's way less overspray, and they really it's like a specialty product where you kind of need to use all of the things that you kind of need to use like the gallery all the way through, and they have clear coats in that product as well.
- 44:31SPEAKER_00: Um, so that's a a real solid option if you're looking for that.
- 44:34SPEAKER_00: And the HVLP sprayer, especially the new ones, are way better than they used to be.
- 44:38SPEAKER_00: They used to really suck.
- 44:40SPEAKER_00: So that's my hot take on that.
- 44:42SPEAKER_00: I'm sure we'll get into that later on a different podcast.
- 44:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 44:45SPEAKER_00: So cool.
- 44:46SPEAKER_00: If you haven't checked out the Goo crew, um, and there's less than 150 people in there when you're listening to this, 100 first 150 people get in there for free.
- 44:54SPEAKER_00: Link is in the description and all of that jazz.
- 44:57SPEAKER_00: But check it out.
- 44:57SPEAKER_00: We're always in there.
- 44:59SPEAKER_00: Josh is very judicious about getting back to people, and everyone's chopping it up, talking about how to be a better paint contractor.
- 45:06SPEAKER_00: So, anything else, brother?
- 45:08SPEAKER_00: That's all.
- 45:09SPEAKER_00: Alrighty.
- 45:09SPEAKER_00: Well, until next time, y'all take it easy, work smart, and have a good one.
- 45:13SPEAKER_00: Folks.
