Transcript
- 0:20Speaker 1: Hey everyone, Emily A Badi here bringing you another episode
- 0:24Speaker 1: of five Minute Friday from Hurdle. I said this on
- 0:27Speaker 1: Wednesday of this week. I'm going to say it again.
- 0:29Speaker 1: I know I have a lot of new hurdlers, as
- 0:32Speaker 1: I love to refer to my listeners listening to the show,
- 0:35Speaker 1: so welcome. I'm so amped to have you here on
- 0:39Speaker 1: five minute Fridays. This is what happens. I share a
- 0:42Speaker 1: little story with you all, something that's going down in
- 0:44Speaker 1: my life. I offer you a thought prompt to take
- 0:47Speaker 1: you into the weekend or whenever you are listening to this,
- 0:50Speaker 1: and then I share with you some of my content pics,
- 0:53Speaker 1: some of my highlights of the week, and finish things
- 0:56Speaker 1: off with a listener question. One thing I want to
- 0:59Speaker 1: note Also on Fridays, the weekly Hurdle newsletter comes out.
- 1:03Speaker 1: I'm gonna put a link in the show notes so
- 1:05Speaker 1: that you can subscribe if you don't do that already.
- 1:08Speaker 1: This week I'm chatting about the biggest lessons I learned
- 1:11Speaker 1: from my first full year of cycling.
- 1:14Speaker 2: I got a road bike last year.
- 1:16Speaker 1: During the pandemic, and I swear to God, without that thing,
- 1:20Speaker 1: I would have been lost. So sharing all my takeaways
- 1:23Speaker 1: from a year of cycling, offering up some gear recommendations
- 1:26Speaker 1: and giving you some information as well about the new
- 1:29Speaker 1: hurdle sessions that just launched. I'm so excited about this.
- 1:32Speaker 1: I've got two on deck. Firstly, a mid year reset.
- 1:36Speaker 1: A lot of us got together back in December and
- 1:38Speaker 1: January to talk about our big goals for twenty twenty one.
- 1:42Speaker 1: And sometimes you know, life gets in the way. Maybe
- 1:45Speaker 1: you're feeling a little stagnant, or maybe right now you're
- 1:47Speaker 1: feeling super motivated. Whatever it is, whyever you feel as
- 1:51Speaker 1: though you need a reset. I'm here, I've got your back.
- 1:54Speaker 1: So in that session, I'm going to talk you through
- 1:56Speaker 1: how to create an action plan to get the most
- 1:59Speaker 1: out of the next six months of the year. And
- 2:01Speaker 1: the other hurdle session I have on deck, I couldn't
- 2:03Speaker 1: be more amped about. And that's because I am joining
- 2:06Speaker 1: forces with the ladies from Brave Body Project. I've got
- 2:09Speaker 1: Amber Reese and Lindsay Clayton joining me for a hurdle
- 2:12Speaker 1: session on Ready for It? So you want to run
- 2:15Speaker 1: a marathon? I have run nine full marathons in my
- 2:19Speaker 1: life and way too many haves to count. And I
- 2:21Speaker 1: get messages all of the time over on Instagram asking
- 2:24Speaker 1: for tips and tricks, and so in this session, alongside
- 2:27Speaker 1: Amber and Lindsay, both of them also certified run coaches,
- 2:31Speaker 1: we are going to dive into all of the particulars
- 2:34Speaker 1: and answer all of your questions. The links to register
- 2:37Speaker 1: for both of those sessions are in the show notes. Okay,
- 2:41Speaker 1: all that housekeeping out of the way now, So this
- 2:46Speaker 1: week on five minute of Friday, I want to tell
- 2:48Speaker 1: you a story about something that happened to me on
- 2:50Speaker 1: Tuesday at the track And I touched on this over
- 2:53Speaker 1: on Instagram earlier this week, and when I did it,
- 2:55Speaker 1: just the comments it made it very clear to me
- 2:59Speaker 1: that I was striking a so I want to chat
- 3:01Speaker 1: about it here. Basically, I just feel like lately, I
- 3:06Speaker 1: feel like every day I'm like gonna cry any single second.
- 3:10Speaker 1: I think that comes hand in hand with just being
- 3:12Speaker 1: in this really big period of transition in my life.
- 3:14Speaker 1: In just under three weeks, I'm going to be moving
- 3:17Speaker 1: to Brooklyn. I've been living on Manhattan's Upper East Side
- 3:21Speaker 1: for ten years now, and so this is a really
- 3:23Speaker 1: big change and I'm just feeling really unsettled and a
- 3:27Speaker 1: little anxious, understandably, so and trying to have some grace
- 3:31Speaker 1: with myself and let myself feel while also like sometimes
- 3:34Speaker 1: wanting to like just like pinch myself and tell myself
- 3:37Speaker 1: to get over it.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Anyway, I digress.
- 3:41Speaker 1: I go down to the track on Tuesday to run
- 3:44Speaker 1: with my run club, and from the get go, I just,
- 3:49Speaker 1: I don't know, I felt like I was a little
- 3:50Speaker 1: bit in my head. So I get roped into like
- 3:53Speaker 1: a pace group that was a little bit faster than
- 3:56Speaker 1: I knew that I wanted to run. We were split
- 3:58Speaker 1: up into a bunch of different pace groups, as always were,
- 4:00Speaker 1: and mine just happened to be one that was running
- 4:03Speaker 1: between seven and seven thirty pace. The thing was is
- 4:07Speaker 1: that I wanted to start closer to the seven thirty
- 4:10Speaker 1: side of things, and other people wanted to start closer
- 4:13Speaker 1: to like the six fifty side of things. So when
- 4:15Speaker 1: you get those two groups of people into one group,
- 4:19Speaker 1: it can definitely create a little bit of chaos. Needless
- 4:22Speaker 1: to say, by the second lap we were running, I
- 4:25Speaker 1: think the workout was maybe ten by six hundred meters.
- 4:28Speaker 1: By the second six hundred meter lap, I mean, my
- 4:30Speaker 1: group was pacing a six fifty mile And there's nothing
- 4:34Speaker 1: wrong with that. Like, please let me be your cheerleader.
- 4:39Speaker 1: It just wasn't the right place for me at that time.
- 4:41Speaker 1: And so come the third lap, I think I was
- 4:45Speaker 1: just completely dropped. It's not that I don't think that
- 4:48Speaker 1: I could have maybe pushed a little bit harder, because
- 4:50Speaker 1: I do, but I definitely felt as though I was
- 4:56Speaker 1: like old Emily, young Emily, coming last in the five k,
- 5:02Speaker 1: struggling to keep up, and the farther I fell back
- 5:06Speaker 1: the more I got in my head about it. I
- 5:08Speaker 1: ran a total of nine of the ten and on
- 5:10Speaker 1: the tenth one, you would think by then I would
- 5:13Speaker 1: have gotten over myself a little bit. But on the
- 5:15Speaker 1: tenth one, I ran half of the six hundred and
- 5:19Speaker 1: crossed that first line and ducked out, and I grabbed
- 5:25Speaker 1: my change of clothes and went to the bathroom and
- 5:28Speaker 1: I just started crying, like I just felt so frustrated
- 5:32Speaker 1: and like fed up with my own bullshit a little bit.
- 5:35Speaker 1: And so I said by to everyone at the track,
- 5:36Speaker 1: and I got on my bike, and I'm biking to
- 5:39Speaker 1: a cafe that I usually go to on Tuesdays.
- 5:42Speaker 2: And it's like on this.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Bike ride that I have a moment where I realized, like,
- 5:45Speaker 1: why are you getting so wrapped up in something that
- 5:49Speaker 1: you weren't even interested in? Like I started that workout
- 5:53Speaker 1: and I wasn't even interested in running a six fifty pace.
- 5:57Speaker 1: I wasn't looking to do that. But when you see
- 6:02Speaker 1: other people doing something, sometimes you feel as though just
- 6:07Speaker 1: because you're not doing that thing, even if it's not
- 6:10Speaker 1: something that you wanted, something that serves you, you get
- 6:13Speaker 1: a little wrapped up in that and you fall victim
- 6:16Speaker 1: or I fall victim to the comparison trap. I get it.
- 6:21Speaker 1: I've been there before. And when I realized on Tuesday
- 6:26Speaker 1: that I didn't need to run their race, that I
- 6:28Speaker 1: just needed to focus on my own that was a
- 6:31Speaker 1: really important moment. That was a moment that I could
- 6:34Speaker 1: come back to myself and be proud for what I've
- 6:36Speaker 1: done and focus on my own pace, my own accomplishments,
- 6:41Speaker 1: and stop comparing. Yeah, I had my moment, but now
- 6:47Speaker 1: I'm grateful for that moment because it gave me the
- 6:50Speaker 1: necessary reminder that I needed to stay on my own lane,
- 6:55Speaker 1: do my own work, and the rest is going to
- 6:57Speaker 1: fall into place. Prompt for you this week, when was
- 7:01Speaker 1: the last time that you got a little bit emotional
- 7:05Speaker 1: and in retrospect, it reminded you of a very important lesson. Again,
- 7:09Speaker 1: when was the last time that you got a little emotional,
- 7:12Speaker 1: and that in retrospect taught you a really important lesson.
- 7:16Speaker 2: Highlights of the week.
- 7:17Speaker 1: Links to all of this goodness are in the show notes.
- 7:21Speaker 1: First up, loving this article from Tambra Pridget on well
- 7:24Speaker 1: and Good. Three of the best neck pain exercises to
- 7:27Speaker 1: Nick's soreness, according to a physical therapist. I feel like
- 7:31Speaker 1: these articles are online a lot. As a journalist, I
- 7:33Speaker 1: can vouch for this, but this one comes with really
- 7:36Speaker 1: great videos and these moves are super simple. I mean,
- 7:39Speaker 1: now that we have all been working from home for
- 7:41Speaker 1: some time, for the most part, I think it's important
- 7:44Speaker 1: to constantly look for ways to better your posture and
- 7:47Speaker 1: be better with mobility, and this article will help you
- 7:50Speaker 1: do just that. Listen the Rich Role podcast roll On
- 7:54Speaker 1: Notes from Minneapolis. I was super interested after I saw
- 7:57Speaker 1: on Instagram last week or two weeks ago that Rich
- 8:00Speaker 1: was in Minneapolis the week leading up to the Derek
- 8:04Speaker 1: Chauvin verdict.
- 8:05Speaker 2: He went there and interviewed a bunch of.
- 8:07Speaker 1: Different people, including a man named Jeremiah Ellison. His episode
- 8:11Speaker 1: is out this week as well, and I was super
- 8:13Speaker 1: surprised to hear his take on what it was like
- 8:16Speaker 1: to be on site at George Floyd Park, as well
- 8:19Speaker 1: as his perspective when someone asked him a really important question,
- 8:24Speaker 1: what does your podcast do? Take the five Love Languages
- 8:29Speaker 1: quiz this week on Monday. In the episode that I
- 8:32Speaker 1: recorded with Alex Silverfagan, we talk a lot about our
- 8:36Speaker 1: love languages and I got some dms throughout the week
- 8:39Speaker 1: asking me where you could learn that. So I'm including
- 8:43Speaker 1: the quiz in the show notes and I'm curious DM
- 8:46Speaker 1: me with what you get. Before I get into this
- 8:49Speaker 1: week's listener question, I do want to give some love
- 8:52Speaker 1: to my sponsor at Element for making hurdle possible. For
- 8:56Speaker 1: those of you that have never heard of Element before,
- 9:00Speaker 1: that's LMNT. Element makes a science backed electrolyte drink mix
- 9:05Speaker 1: with everything you need and nothing you don't. And as
- 9:09Speaker 1: you can imagine, as an avid runner, cyclist, endurance junkie,
- 9:14Speaker 1: I have tried a lot of different electrolytes and different
- 9:19Speaker 1: fueling strategies to keep me performing at my best. Without
- 9:24Speaker 1: a doubt, one of my favorites of all time is Element,
- 9:29Speaker 1: and that's because it tastes great. I'm talking flavors like

- 10:22Speaker 2: And now a listener question from Brittany.
- 10:26Speaker 3: Hi Emily, my name is Brittany and I'm an avid
- 10:29Speaker 3: heard a listener and I know you talked a lot
- 10:31Speaker 3: about during the hypopandemic giving yourself at grase. My question
- 10:35Speaker 3: is how do you maintain giving yourself at grease As
- 10:38Speaker 3: things seem to pick backed up and everyone starts to
- 10:40Speaker 3: get in the full swing of the hustle and bustle.
- 10:44Speaker 2: Thank you, what a good question. Thank you for that.
- 10:50Speaker 1: It's really it's really important that you are realizing and
- 10:54Speaker 1: recognizing the importance of maintaining that grease with yourself as
- 10:59Speaker 1: time goes on. Yes, the last fourteen or so months
- 11:03Speaker 1: have been extremely difficult, and they have required a lot
- 11:07Speaker 1: of grace from all of us on just being gentle
- 11:11Speaker 1: with ourselves and our emotions as some of even the
- 11:15Speaker 1: most what seemed as though basic everyday tasks started to
- 11:19Speaker 1: feel just so much more difficult. Right and just because
- 11:25Speaker 1: you know, maybe some of us will go back into
- 11:28Speaker 1: an office soon, maybe we will be spending more time
- 11:32Speaker 1: with friends and family in whatever way we feel comfortable,
- 11:36Speaker 1: that doesn't mean that this muscle that you learn to flex,
- 11:40Speaker 1: so to speak, of self care needs to stop being exercised.
- 11:46Speaker 1: So the question to go back to it, how do
- 11:48Speaker 1: you keep having grace with yourself? Well, that's really up
- 11:52Speaker 1: to you. And maybe having grace with yourself in the
- 11:56Speaker 1: next year will look different than it did over the
- 11:59Speaker 1: past year, and that's okay. But to prioritize your own
- 12:04Speaker 1: self care is not selfish. It is critical to keep
- 12:09Speaker 1: moving forward, have honest conversations with yourself about what is
- 12:13Speaker 1: it that you need to best show up on a
- 12:15Speaker 1: day to day basis, Have the courage to put yourself first.
- 12:20Speaker 2: It's important.
- 12:20Speaker 1: It's a theme what I talked a lot about with
- 12:23Speaker 1: Alex this week, and you'll be better for it. The
- 12:27Speaker 1: last thing that I want to throw your way is
- 12:29Speaker 1: that next week on the show is five back to
- 12:31Speaker 1: back episodes, a special in focus series on motherhood leading
- 12:36Speaker 1: up to Mother's Day. I'm going to be talking to
- 12:39Speaker 1: some wonderful humans including Steph Bruce, Toonday, Oyen Aine, Rachel Nix,
- 12:46Speaker 1: Sarah Larson, Levy, Annie Thoris's daughter, and my lovely mother
- 12:53Speaker 1: Dina Boddy, all about motherhood and lessons that it has
- 12:58Speaker 1: taught them. Note not all of these women are mothers.
- 13:02Speaker 1: I'll be sharing a really special conversation with Tunday that
- 13:05Speaker 1: we have about the impact that her late mother left
- 13:08Speaker 1: on her and how that Hurdle moment has shaped her
- 13:11Speaker 1: to be who she is today. That's a wrap on
- 13:13Speaker 1: season five of the show as well.
- 13:16Speaker 2: Stay tuned.
- 13:17Speaker 1: Season six is on the horizon, and I am so excited.
- 13:22Speaker 1: Make sure you're following Hurdle over on social It's at
- 13:24Speaker 1: Hurdle Podcast. I'm over at Emily Abadi another hurdle conquered.
- 13:30Speaker 1: Catch you guys next time.
