Latest / Inside the Birds: A Philadelphia Eagles Podcast / Inside The Tape With Greg Cosell: How Ben Johnson Stayed "A Step Ahed" Of Eagles DC Vic Fangio
Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: Hello, everyone. Welcome to Inside the Tape on Inside the Birds.
- 0:13Speaker 1: I'm Jeff Mosher with Adam Kaplan. And of course, we've
- 0:15Speaker 1: got Greg Cosell to help us break down the Eagles tape.
- 0:18Speaker 1: And we already did the offense from their 27-7 loss
- 0:21Speaker 1: to the Bears. Now we got to go to a
- 0:23Speaker 1: defense which gave up some uncharacteristic big plays. Although I
- 0:28Speaker 1: feel like we're saying that a couple of couple of
- 0:30Speaker 1: times now here early in the season. Greg, why was
- 0:34Speaker 1: a 38-year-old journeyman quarterback able to move the ball as
- 0:39Speaker 1: well as he did.
- 0:39Speaker 2: In the Eagles' defense? Again, I'm just giving you my
- 0:43Speaker 2: impression from the tape, and I don't think I've said
- 0:46Speaker 2: this in years and years and years, but I thought
- 0:49Speaker 2: watching the tape, and I was talking to my guys
- 0:52Speaker 2: in the matchup room here, it just seemed like Ben
- 0:55Speaker 2: Johnson was a step ahead of Vic Fangio in this game.
- 0:59Speaker 2: I kind of felt like with all of the multiplicity
- 1:02Speaker 2: of motions with, you know, the way he went about
- 1:04Speaker 2: the game, I just felt like the Eagles were playing
- 1:07Speaker 2: a step behind, you know, and again, these things, it's
- 1:13Speaker 2: the NFL. These things do happen. We're not used to
- 1:15Speaker 2: saying that about Vic Fangio, but, you know, and the
- 1:19Speaker 2: thing is the Eagles don't have anybody on their defensive front.
- 1:22Speaker 2: And then right now that includes Jalen Carter who had
- 1:25Speaker 2: some good snaps, you know, but, they don't really have
- 1:28Speaker 2: a game record. And so therefore they, they just kind
- 1:33Speaker 2: of played and, um, you know, and it wasn't like,
- 1:37Speaker 2: Oh my God, horrendous. Like the bears put up 550 yards.
- 1:40Speaker 2: I mean, you didn't, you know, but you just, I
- 1:43Speaker 2: just felt like the Eagles in some ways never really
- 1:47Speaker 2: made a stand, you know? Um, and obviously Grenard played
- 1:50Speaker 2: 18 snaps all and then in the nickel, um, Young
- 1:55Speaker 2: played more snaps than any game he played, you know,
- 1:58Speaker 2: than any game this year. You know, so again, I
- 2:01Speaker 2: don't know the reasoning behind that. You know, only they
- 2:04Speaker 2: could tell you, but he did. You know, it wasn't
- 2:07Speaker 2: like the Bears ran the ball like crazy. You know,
- 2:09Speaker 2: it's not like they put up 180 rushing yards or
- 2:12Speaker 2: anything like that.
- 2:12Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:13Speaker 2: I mean, Keenan made some throws. You got to admit,
- 2:15Speaker 2: he made some throws that were big time NFL throws.
- 2:18Speaker 1: He really did. It felt like revenge for Nick Foles,
- 2:23Speaker 1: playing the way he did in the Super Bowl.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Of course, the Eagles did get lucky that Adunze missed
- 2:27Speaker 2: that touchdown, dropped it because they ended up going for
- 2:30Speaker 2: it on fourth down and getting no points on that drive.
- 2:34Speaker 2: But it just seemed like there was an efficiency to
- 2:37Speaker 2: the Bears' offense, even if it wasn't a case, like
- 2:39Speaker 2: I said, of just yards after yards after yards. It
- 2:42Speaker 2: just seemed like an efficiency to the Bears' offense that
- 2:45Speaker 2: the Eagles were not matching on their side of the ball.
- 2:48Speaker 3: I thought that Ben Johnson's plan to get the ball
- 2:51Speaker 3: out of his hands quickly. They came out throwing, which
- 2:55Speaker 3: surprised me quickest of all 32 quarterbacks this week, 2.41 seconds.
- 3:01Speaker 2: I mean, you, how you as a.
- 3:04Speaker 3: Pass rusher, unless you press your corners, Greg, what can
- 3:08Speaker 3: you do to slow them down?
- 3:09Speaker 2: I mean, first series, you know, burden seven yards on
- 3:11Speaker 2: the quick out off motion to start the game. Raymond
- 3:14Speaker 2: 10 yards on the curl flat seam combination that presents
- 3:17Speaker 2: a clean passing window. All of a sudden Keenum is comfortable.
- 3:20Speaker 2: You know, say what you want about Keenum. He still
- 3:22Speaker 2: has that refined sense of timing and anticipation, and he
- 3:25Speaker 2: is willing to turn it loose. He's not a risk-free thrower.
- 3:30Speaker 2: You know, he hit a couple of throws. I mean,
- 3:32Speaker 2: he hit a dunesay on the sideline on one throw
- 3:34Speaker 2: that was ridiculous. You know, I mean, he made some throws.
- 3:39Speaker 2: But Adam's 100% right, 1,000% right. I mean, the way
- 3:42Speaker 2: he came out, you know, everything rhythmic, get rid of
- 3:45Speaker 2: the ball. With motion, just create the quick opportunities because
- 3:49Speaker 2: you can't press, so guys get free access and they
- 3:52Speaker 2: can catch quick throws. I'm sure he didn't care whether
- 3:56Speaker 2: it got five yards or seven yards. It's just get
- 3:58Speaker 2: the ball out and let's get Keenum comfortable in the
- 4:01Speaker 2: game and let's go from there.
- 4:04Speaker 1: Greg, did the Bears play more 11 personnel than they
- 4:07Speaker 1: typically play?
- 4:10Speaker 2: Well, in this game, let's see. They played 37 snaps
- 4:13Speaker 2: in 11, 19 snaps in 12. 11 snaps in 13.
- 4:18Speaker 1: That had to be tactical. That, to me, signals one
- 4:21Speaker 1: of two things. One, maybe a comfort for Keenum. I mean,
- 4:25Speaker 1: didn't Keenum come up through the Art Bryles kind of
- 4:28Speaker 1: spread out?
- 4:29Speaker 2: Well, didn't he play college at the University of Houston?
- 4:32Speaker 2: He did.
- 4:32Speaker 1: I think he succeeded.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Wasn't that like the run and shoot or whatever you
- 4:36Speaker 2: want to call it? Yeah. I forget all the names now.
- 4:40Speaker 3: He's put up more yards in college than he did
- 4:41Speaker 3: in the pros, which is insane.
- 4:44Speaker 1: So you're trying to make a quarterback who hasn't started
- 4:46Speaker 1: a lot comfortable. And then secondly, I wonder if he
- 4:50Speaker 1: knew that if he played more 11, he would see
- 4:53Speaker 1: more nickel. He would have Marcus Epps at safety more
- 4:57Speaker 1: who's been struggling because Epps certainly missed his fair share
- 5:00Speaker 1: of tackles. And then, you know, I don't know how great.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Well, obviously, look, obviously this Williams started the first two games,
- 5:06Speaker 2: but for the season, They're 48% and 11 personnel. In
- 5:10Speaker 2: this game, they were, let's see. In this game, they
- 5:16Speaker 2: were 53%. So it wasn't like an extreme difference, Jeff.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Okay. All right.
- 5:22Speaker 2: 48 to 53. Yeah.
- 5:22Speaker 1: No, it's not extreme. I thought I would see more
- 5:25Speaker 1: 13 personnel and them trying to run, but they obviously
- 5:29Speaker 1: had a different plan.
- 5:30Speaker 2: He really liked the Sam Roush kid, and it wouldn't
- 5:33Speaker 2: surprise me if you see them, as time goes on,
- 5:35Speaker 2: playing more 13.
- 5:37Speaker 1: For sure. For sure. What did you observe about the
- 5:40Speaker 1: back end of the Eagles defense? Was there communication issues, tackling,
- 5:45Speaker 1: all of the above, not as sticky as normal?
- 5:48Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, they had some issues. They had some
- 5:50Speaker 2: mental issues in this game, big time, which is very surprising.
- 5:55Speaker 2: I mean, as I'm watching the tape, because, you know,
- 5:57Speaker 2: as I've told you guys and obviously the audience, I
- 6:00Speaker 2: usually don't look at numbers until I'm, you know, into
- 6:02Speaker 2: the game, you know, other than the personnel, you know,
- 6:05Speaker 2: but other than that, And then the game tells me
- 6:07Speaker 2: as I'm watching it, oh, I'm seeing this. Let me
- 6:11Speaker 2: look at the numbers. And the numbers, think about these
- 6:14Speaker 2: numbers against a Vic Fangio defense. You know what Keenum
- 6:18Speaker 2: was in the play action pass game under center? Under
- 6:21Speaker 2: center now, which the Bears are a big under center offense.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Keenum was 10 for 11 for 115 yards. Seven of
- 6:28Speaker 2: those 10 completions resulted in first downs. That's play action
- 6:32Speaker 2: under center. I mean, I don't know when the last
- 6:34Speaker 2: time somebody was that efficient. I mean, that's not efficient.
- 6:38Speaker 2: That's spectacular, you know, against a Vic Fangio defense.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Well, we did see that. We saw an appetizer of
- 6:45Speaker 1: it in week two because certainly for the first time,
- 6:48Speaker 1: as you noted, Greg, you were seeing Cam Ward go
- 6:51Speaker 1: under center.
- 6:51Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. And I mentioned that. That's what we've got
- 6:53Speaker 2: to deal with.
- 6:55Speaker 1: So this is an area where the Eagles have to
- 6:58Speaker 1: tighten up. I mean, this is not just happenstance now.
- 7:00Speaker 1: It's happened a couple of times.
- 7:02Speaker 2: And the other thing, too, is, and this was a
- 7:03Speaker 2: function of the game, is Vic clearly increased his pressure frequency, guys,
- 7:09Speaker 2: as the game went on because, you know, I mean,
- 7:12Speaker 2: you hate to say it, but the Eagles don't have
- 7:14Speaker 2: a pass rush. So, you know, somehow you've got to
- 7:17Speaker 2: impact the quarterback. And Keenum and the Bears, and it's
- 7:20Speaker 2: not just the quarterback, but the Bears, Keenum was 11
- 7:23Speaker 2: for 11 for 145 yards. Think about that, 11 for
- 7:25Speaker 2: 11 for 145 yards and two touchdowns against pressure. Geez. Wow.
- 7:33Speaker 3: And, and, and Greg, the thing that surprised me is
- 7:36Speaker 3: this just goes to show you of what, what happened.
- 7:39Speaker 3: Grenard wins his first, his first rush beat, beat, beat
- 7:42Speaker 3: the tackle badly. Then Keenan makes a throw. Like it
- 7:46Speaker 3: makes it like an incredible throw across his body.
- 7:48Speaker 2: Like what, what can you do? I mean, that's that.
- 7:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:50Speaker 2: I mean, when he hit burden, I think for 25 yards,
- 7:54Speaker 2: you know, it might've been third quarter. I can't remember.
- 7:56Speaker 2: It was, it was, Grenard just killed the left tackle
- 8:00Speaker 2: and was right in his face, and Keenum just released
- 8:03Speaker 2: it really early. But the structure of the play, the
- 8:07Speaker 2: play design beat the Eagles' defense, and, you know, it
- 8:09Speaker 2: was a really good play. And then I think he
- 8:11Speaker 2: followed that up with that ridiculous throw to Odunze on
- 8:14Speaker 2: the right sideline, which was, you know, if Patrick Mahomes
- 8:19Speaker 2: made that throw, we'd be talking about it for weeks.
- 8:21Speaker 2: It was a ridiculous throw. Yeah, yeah.
- 8:23Speaker 1: It felt like the stars were aligned when.
- 8:25Speaker 2: That was thrown. Yeah. But I mean, you know, when
- 8:28Speaker 2: you watch Ben Johnson, I think, you know, it always
- 8:32Speaker 2: stands out. I mean, he's so good attacking defenses with
- 8:36Speaker 2: personnel and formations. I mean, it's just, you know, that's
- 8:39Speaker 2: who he is. I mean, he gives a defense so
- 8:42Speaker 2: much pre-snap movement and multiplicity in their run game, too.
- 8:46Speaker 2: It's difficult to zero in on specific tendencies. You know,
- 8:50Speaker 2: there's just a lot going on. And, you know, obviously
- 8:52Speaker 2: you've got to coach all that. And it's an unbelievable
- 8:55Speaker 2: credit to Keenum that he can come in, you know,
- 8:57Speaker 2: and obviously the guy's a veteran, so he's probably seen
- 9:00Speaker 2: everything and been coached and you know, 20 different systems,
- 9:03Speaker 2: but still, then you got to execute in a game.
- 9:06Speaker 2: I mean, that's different, but you know, Ben Johnson just
- 9:08Speaker 2: gives you a lot. And like I said, I don't
- 9:11Speaker 2: want to sit here. Like we talked about the offensive
- 9:13Speaker 2: side of the ball with the Eagles and say that,
- 9:15Speaker 2: you know, Sean Mannion was schooled. I'm not going to
- 9:17Speaker 2: sit here and say Vic Fangio was schooled. You know,
- 9:20Speaker 2: Vic Fangio is obviously one of the smartest D coordinators
- 9:22Speaker 2: in the league and people, you know, look to him
- 9:24Speaker 2: as like, he should be a hall of fame assistant coach.
- 9:27Speaker 2: And then obviously he is great. But this game, the
- 9:29Speaker 2: Eagles seemed to step behind, and they made mental mistakes.
- 9:33Speaker 3: Well, they also had free– Greg, you talked about it earlier.
- 9:36Speaker 3: The pass target group, whether tight ends or receivers, they
- 9:39Speaker 3: had free access because, as you talked about, when you
- 9:42Speaker 3: send guys in motion, you can't press. Not the Eagles
- 9:44Speaker 3: are a press team.
- 9:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:45Speaker 3: But, man, it seemed like over the middle– and obviously
- 9:49Speaker 3: Keenan was getting the ball out quick. They had so
- 9:51Speaker 3: many open receivers by motion– And you've told us motion matters, man.
- 9:56Speaker 3: It gets guys open.
- 9:57Speaker 2: It's going to be interesting when Kenny Moore is available.
- 10:00Speaker 2: and again we don't know where he stands or if
- 10:02Speaker 2: he still can play at a meaningful level they think
- 10:05Speaker 2: he can or they wouldn't have signed him sure but
- 10:07Speaker 2: the bottom line is that they told you by what
- 10:09Speaker 2: they did last night that marcus epps is not the
- 10:11Speaker 2: answer because michael carter played 20 snaps So we don't
- 10:15Speaker 2: have to interpret that. You know, I always tell people
- 10:18Speaker 2: that the tape tells you what coaches are thinking. You know,
- 10:21Speaker 2: I've learned that a long time ago. I'm not the
- 10:22Speaker 2: one who came up with that. So I'm not taking
- 10:24Speaker 2: credit for that. You know, Adam sat with Ron Jaworski
- 10:26Speaker 2: and myself years ago, many times. Josh would always say
- 10:29Speaker 2: things like that. I've heard other coaches say things like that.
- 10:32Speaker 2: You know, the coaches tell you how they feel about
- 10:34Speaker 2: players by what they do. So the fact that, you know,
- 10:37Speaker 2: that Carter played 20 snaps at safety, he tells you that,
- 10:41Speaker 2: you know, Marcus Epps is, they know he's not the answer. So,
- 10:44Speaker 2: you know, we discussed this about, you know, what the
- 10:47Speaker 2: plan is with Kenny Moore and Cooper DeGene. But we
- 10:50Speaker 2: won't know that till we see it. But, you know,
- 10:53Speaker 2: they're telling you that that safety position next to McCube
- 10:55Speaker 2: is not what they want it to be right now.
- 10:57Speaker 1: What did the tape tell you about Michael Carter's play
- 11:00Speaker 1: against the Bears in comparison?
- 11:02Speaker 2: I kind of like what I saw with Carter. I mean,
- 11:04Speaker 2: you know, again, I'm sure he made a few mistakes.
- 11:08Speaker 2: You know, I don't know the details the way coaches do,
- 11:10Speaker 2: you know, because they're charting everything. But I liked his aggressiveness.
- 11:14Speaker 2: I thought he had a quick trigger on some running plays.
- 11:17Speaker 2: I mean, he showed up.
- 11:18Speaker 1: Yep.
- 11:19Speaker 2: And we'll see. If Kenny Moore is not the guy
- 11:22Speaker 2: they think or if he's not ready this week, it'll
- 11:24Speaker 2: be interesting to see if Carter plays more snaps.
- 11:27Speaker 1: For sure. All right, let's take a look at some
- 11:29Speaker 1: of the footage. Guess what we're not going to look at.
- 11:32Speaker 1: We're not going to look at the Luther Burden touchdown
- 11:34Speaker 1: because everybody could see he carried five people.
- 11:36Speaker 2: There's no reason for that. I mean, that's inexcusable. So
- 11:39Speaker 2: this was the burden. This was the crosser where a
- 11:42Speaker 2: Grenard immediately beat the left tackle. I think it was
- 11:45Speaker 2: a Jones or was it been a dead at that point?
- 11:47Speaker 2: It doesn't matter, but I love the concept here. I
- 11:50Speaker 2: love the, the condensed formation. I love the, the, the,
- 11:54Speaker 2: the Z the Zin motion, as we call it, the
- 11:56Speaker 2: Z in motion where burden then releases inside of command.
- 12:00Speaker 2: And they're just running a post cross combination, which is
- 12:03Speaker 2: in everybody's playbook in high school. But this is an
- 12:06Speaker 2: unbelievable play by, by Keenum because it's, He has to
- 12:10Speaker 2: throw this. He's throwing it now.
- 12:12Speaker 3: This is what I just can't believe it.
- 12:15Speaker 2: And because of the under center play action, you can
- 12:19Speaker 2: see the second level is not getting any depth. And
- 12:22Speaker 2: it's an unbelievable– That is insane. Greg and Jeff– You
- 12:28Speaker 2: have to trust what the route concept is going to do.
- 12:31Speaker 2: You've got to trust that Quinion Mitchell is going to
- 12:34Speaker 2: run with– I think it's a dunesay– is going to
- 12:37Speaker 2: run with a dunesay and not come off that– come
- 12:40Speaker 2: off it because if he comes off and sits, it's
- 12:42Speaker 2: a pick. So you just have to trust the concept
- 12:45Speaker 2: and trust that it's the process.
- 12:49Speaker 1: I'm just, what does, do you think, I mean, I
- 12:52Speaker 1: get that there's play action. Do Makuba and Campbell, do
- 12:55Speaker 1: they got to be a little tighter there?
- 12:59Speaker 2: Tighter to what? Where's Makuba? He's in the box, right?
- 13:03Speaker 1: Makuba is the guy that's in the box.
- 13:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:05Speaker 1: I mean, he's going to, he's going.
- 13:05Speaker 2: To be retrieving the box here. Yeah. And you get
- 13:09Speaker 2: run action.
- 13:10Speaker 1: And he runs.
- 13:10Speaker 2: You get run action. Kuba does hunt it up. He's
- 13:14Speaker 2: just not in position to play. Yeah, I guess.
- 13:17Speaker 1: Yeah, it was a great throw, too. I mean, like
- 13:18Speaker 1: you said, with Grenard right there in his face.
- 13:21Speaker 3: His first, his only elite year, if you want to
- 13:24Speaker 3: call it that, was 2017.
- 13:26Speaker 2: Keenum.
- 13:26Speaker 3: I mean, and he made a lot of money because
- 13:30Speaker 3: of it. This is just, I mean, this throw is
- 13:33Speaker 3: about as big time as it gets.
- 13:35Speaker 2: Right.
- 13:35Speaker 1: And then, well, well, until the very next play, right, Greg,
- 13:39Speaker 1: this was the next one.
- 13:40Speaker 2: And this one was a little different for Vic in
- 13:43Speaker 2: what he normally does, because this was another conventional play
- 13:47Speaker 2: action concept, you know, under center, like we said, they
- 13:51Speaker 2: put committed the I formation fallback. The Eagles went with
- 13:54Speaker 2: something you don't see very often. They went with a
- 13:56Speaker 2: double corner cat and that left just four in coverage
- 13:59Speaker 2: out of a two deep shell. So there's a lot
- 14:01Speaker 2: of space, but the point is, is, um, This is
- 14:05Speaker 2: a really difficult throw. I mean, this is not like
- 14:09Speaker 2: a routine throw, even though there's only really, you know,
- 14:12Speaker 2: there end up being, I guess, five in coverage because,
- 14:14Speaker 2: you know, someone drops out late. But, I mean, this
- 14:18Speaker 2: is a big-time throw now.
- 14:19Speaker 1: Huge, especially with a guy like Jalen Carter in his
- 14:21Speaker 1: face at the arduo.
- 14:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:22Speaker 1: Jordan Davis in his face at the end.
- 14:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it was Jordan Davis. Yeah.
- 14:29Speaker 3: Wow.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Yeah, how often?
- 14:31Speaker 2: And because he knew he could feel the pressure, like
- 14:34Speaker 2: someone looking at this could say, well, gee, why didn't
- 14:36Speaker 2: he throw the dig on the other side? Because he's
- 14:39Speaker 2: facing that way to the sideline and he feels the pressure.
- 14:43Speaker 2: He doesn't have time to stop and turn his body,
- 14:46Speaker 2: you know, to throw the dig ball, which, you know,
- 14:48Speaker 2: appears far more open, but he just can't do that.
- 14:51Speaker 2: He's just got to get rid of the foot. I mean,
- 14:53Speaker 2: believe me, he sees and feels Carter, even though he's
- 14:56Speaker 2: not looking at him, he knows he's there. Yeah. I mean, Davis,
- 15:00Speaker 2: excuse me.
- 15:00Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. I can't remember the last time Vic blitzed
- 15:04Speaker 1: both of his corners on one play.
- 15:05Speaker 2: Yeah, his double corner cat.
- 15:07Speaker 1: Right, and because he's doing that, right?
- 15:09Speaker 2: And by the way, he started his throw well before
- 15:13Speaker 2: Adunze even started his break. I mean, this is a
- 15:15Speaker 2: spot throw. He's not throwing to Adunze. He's throwing to
- 15:18Speaker 2: a spot.
- 15:19Speaker 1: Right. Yep, because Adunze's back is to him right now.
- 15:22Speaker 2: Look at his motion. Yeah.
- 15:26Speaker 3: He's got his hitch, and that ball's out.
- 15:27Speaker 1: There are some people who are.
- 15:29Speaker 2: That if you recall, Jaws would sometimes say I can
- 15:32Speaker 2: make it blindfolded because you're throwing to a spot. Yeah. Crazy.
- 15:36Speaker 1: There is some criticism I saw of Cooper to Gene for,
- 15:40Speaker 1: I guess people thought he doesn't look like he's trying

- 15:44Speaker 1: normally see.
- 15:46Speaker 2: I mean, I don't know.
- 15:47Speaker 1: It looks like to me, that's just over his head. Yeah.
- 15:49Speaker 1: It's just big time.
- 15:51Speaker 2: Yeah. Big time throw. You just say, hey, great job.

- 18:31Speaker 1: Camden Apothecary, top quality cannabis, great prices, and an experience
- 18:36Speaker 1: made for Philly fans 21 and up. This one's a
- 18:40Speaker 1: third and 10 to a dunes, Greg, in the second
- 18:42Speaker 1: quarter for 15.
- 18:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm trying to remember this one. Oh, yes. This
- 18:48Speaker 2: is where Dunesay motions across the formation. And again, you're
- 18:52Speaker 2: going to get free access into his route, so no
- 18:54Speaker 2: one's going to stop him. So this was just a
- 18:58Speaker 2: great snapshot out of empty and Dunesay motion across the formation.
- 19:03Speaker 2: The Eagles went cover four behind a loaded front. They
- 19:06Speaker 2: did a long stunt with Hunt, which they do a
- 19:08Speaker 2: lot of, with Hunt being a looper in stunt concept.
- 19:11Speaker 2: And just because it ends up being kind of a
- 19:13Speaker 2: high-low concept against cover four. And because Mitchell, you know,
- 19:16Speaker 2: had a playoff, he couldn't press him. There's space. And
- 19:20Speaker 2: it's a tight window throw. I don't know if you
- 19:22Speaker 2: have the end zone shot of it.
- 19:24Speaker 1: No, I didn't.
- 19:27Speaker 2: It's actually a really good job by Zach Vaughn. He
- 19:30Speaker 2: almost gets there as the underneath guy. And he's someone
- 19:33Speaker 2: that Keenum is not really concerned about because he doesn't
- 19:36Speaker 2: think that Vaughn can impact the play, which he really can't.
- 19:39Speaker 2: You know, if the timing's right, it's still an incredible
- 19:41Speaker 2: play by Zach Vaughn.
- 19:43Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. Yeah. Boy, he was almost doing his uh,
- 19:46Speaker 1: channeling his Zach, uh, TJ Edwards there. Yeah.
- 19:51Speaker 2: Window throw. I mean, and again, look at when he
- 19:53Speaker 2: starts his delivery guys, he started now. I mean, he
- 19:58Speaker 2: just played, he's, you know, guys like Keenum, Taylor Heineke,
- 20:02Speaker 2: they all kind of have a pretty refined sense of timing.
- 20:05Speaker 2: They're just smaller quarterbacks who don't have big arms. You know, they're, they're, Obviously,
- 20:12Speaker 2: but Case Keenum, what is he? He's played probably like
- 20:15Speaker 2: 15 years in the NFL. Yeah, he's 38.
- 20:19Speaker 1: 2012, I think he's been away.
- 20:20Speaker 2: I mean, by the way, this game was not a
- 20:22Speaker 2: game where you say, oh, well, they tried to hide
- 20:24Speaker 2: Case Keenum. They didn't try to hide Case Keenum. No.
- 20:26Speaker 1: Not at all.
- 20:27Speaker 2: But, Greg, here's the thing. It's not like he's making
- 20:29Speaker 2: 5- or 10-yard throws. No. He throws like 25, 30-yard
- 20:32Speaker 2: throws a year. Now, I don't know if you got
- 20:34Speaker 2: the Raymond touchdown. That was a– We.
- 20:36Speaker 1: Will get to that in a second. I just want
- 20:38Speaker 1: to say, if we're going to nitpick on something, something
- 20:41Speaker 1: that we've already talked about for this completion, it's third
- 20:43Speaker 1: and 10. The Eagles do show their loaded front. They
- 20:46Speaker 1: just– they really couldn't get any pressure here. It was
- 20:48Speaker 1: good protection. It picked up well. Nobody really beat their guy.
- 20:52Speaker 1: and he had time to see and make that throw.
- 20:54Speaker 1: Maybe if there's somebody in his face and he's a
- 20:57Speaker 1: bit delayed, then Bond gets there or somebody.
- 20:59Speaker 2: Else gets there. To Keenum's credit, he made a couple
- 21:01Speaker 2: of really good throws when there was pressure. But for
- 21:04Speaker 2: the most part, the Eagles, and that's been true for
- 21:06Speaker 2: the first three games, and that's what they're hoping with Grenard.
- 21:08Speaker 2: And Grenard showed some quickness. He had a couple of
- 21:11Speaker 2: speed-to-power rushes. I mean, he showed flashes that, hey, he
- 21:15Speaker 2: could be a worthy edge-pass rusher. But for the most part,
- 21:19Speaker 2: they've not been able to pressure the quarterback very much
- 21:22Speaker 2: through three games.
- 21:23Speaker 3: Right.
- 21:23Speaker 1: And here's the second. We got two in a row
- 21:25Speaker 1: for Raymond. Second and 12 on the rise.
- 21:27Speaker 2: This to me is just Ben Johnson being Ben Johnson.
- 21:30Speaker 1: Okay.
- 21:31Speaker 2: Because what he did is he goes two by two
- 21:34Speaker 2: at a 12, and each outside receiver is a tight end.
- 21:37Speaker 2: So what happens here is you're in base, so the
- 21:40Speaker 2: Eagles go base. So you're going to get your two
- 21:42Speaker 2: wide receivers matched on either a linebacker or an edge defender.
- 21:48Speaker 2: So Hunt, I think it's Hunt who is outside over
- 21:52Speaker 2: the slot to the field, but it's Bond who's matched
- 21:55Speaker 2: up over Raymond to the boundary. And it's just, you know,
- 21:58Speaker 2: it's Raymond versus Bond. As good a player Bond is,
- 22:01Speaker 2: that's not, you know. Cliff Raymond's very quick. It's pitch
- 22:06Speaker 2: and catch. Absolutely.
- 22:08Speaker 1: That is a schemed up play, right?
- 22:10Speaker 2: That's a schemed up play.
- 22:11Speaker 1: Yep, 100%. All right. And then this is.
- 22:16Speaker 2: This is where the gene and wall in and see,
- 22:19Speaker 2: this to me is something. And again, I'm not saying
- 22:23Speaker 2: this wasn't gone over, but this is the kind of
- 22:25Speaker 2: thing that should be automatic because you're playing a team
- 22:28Speaker 2: that is a high percentage motion team, particularly with receivers
- 22:33Speaker 2: across the formation. So you're playing a man concept here.
- 22:36Speaker 2: So when he goes across the formation, first of all,
- 22:39Speaker 2: you don't know exactly freeze at one set. You don't
- 22:41Speaker 2: know exactly where he's going to release. Is he going
- 22:44Speaker 2: to go past the, Raymond, is he going to go
- 22:47Speaker 2: inside of him? And if he does go inside of him,
- 22:50Speaker 2: is he then going to go outside in a switch
- 22:52Speaker 2: release concept? You've got to have an answer for this
- 22:54Speaker 2: based on your film study throughout the week. And clearly
- 22:57Speaker 2: Dajin thought that he was going to stay with Burden
- 23:03Speaker 2: and Wolin as soon as he saw the motion figure.
- 23:05Speaker 2: I'm going to expand and I'm going to get Burden.
- 23:08Speaker 2: So it was just total confusion between the two guys.
- 23:13Speaker 2: And that, again... That can't happen because this is a
- 23:17Speaker 2: team that uses motion. It's not like the first time
- 23:20Speaker 2: this team used motion and you're unsure how to play it. Right.
- 23:23Speaker 2: And it was coming.
- 23:25Speaker 1: Not to mention it's the third quarter. You probably played
- 23:27Speaker 1: a few motion snaps already.
- 23:30Speaker 2: So, I mean, this is just your basic, you know, fuss.
- 23:33Speaker 2: I mean, they didn't communicate. They didn't have a– they
- 23:37Speaker 2: didn't– if they had a plan, they didn't execute the plan.
- 23:39Speaker 2: And I have to believe they had a plan.
- 23:41Speaker 1: Right. So a really interesting thing, maybe Ben Johnson saw
- 23:45Speaker 1: something on tape as far as Reek being new and
- 23:48Speaker 1: having to communicate because Case Keenum said in his interview
- 23:51Speaker 1: with ESPN After that he was going through plays with
- 23:53Speaker 1: Ben Johnson Saturday night as they were pairing it down
- 23:56Speaker 1: to what they were going to run. And Ben was
- 23:58Speaker 1: really trying to get Case like, what do you want?
- 24:02Speaker 1: What pass plays are you really comfortable with? So Case
- 24:05Speaker 1: gave some input. And then he said Ben had a
- 24:08Speaker 1: few plays that Case was not comfortable with But Ben said,
- 24:12Speaker 1: trust me, I think they'll work. And he said the
- 24:15Speaker 1: 41-yard touchdown was one that Ben really said, trust me
- 24:19Speaker 1: on this. So I wonder if Ben saw something on
- 24:22Speaker 1: tape that the motion was going to confuse that part
- 24:26Speaker 1: of the Eagles defense. We'll never know, but just interesting.
- 24:29Speaker 2: We will never know the answer to that. And then,
- 24:31Speaker 2: you know, because obviously no one's going to say that.
- 24:34Speaker 2: But clearly, look, just go back. Can you go back?
- 24:38Speaker 2: Dick will see wide open, uncovered. Go back. Go back
- 24:41Speaker 2: to even further. Go back to just before the ball snapped. Literally,
- 24:46Speaker 2: if you can. I mean, I don't know.
- 24:47Speaker 1: Right before the ball snapped? All right.
- 24:48Speaker 2: Just before the ball snapped. So let's say it's right.
- 24:52Speaker 2: That's fine. So right now, what you have here is
- 24:57Speaker 2: it appears that Burton is releasing inside of Ray. Excuse me.
- 25:05Speaker 2: So now, as a defense, you're thinking, okay, he's releasing
- 25:08Speaker 2: inside of him. But as the play starts to develop,
- 25:12Speaker 2: he becomes the outside receiver. So it's almost a switch.
- 25:16Speaker 2: So you're attempting to create confusion. Now, I'm not saying
- 25:20Speaker 2: they knew this would happen. No one knows that for sure.
- 25:23Speaker 2: But that's part of why you do this. You're forcing
- 25:26Speaker 2: those two defenders to have to communicate on the fly
- 25:29Speaker 2: in a millisecond.
- 25:30Speaker 3: Right.
- 25:32Speaker 1: And that's what happens in a millisecond.
- 25:35Speaker 2: And look at that. The ball was thrown to the
- 25:36Speaker 2: other shoulder. He turned around and scored.
- 25:39Speaker 1: That's the funny part of this. Nobody mentions that Keenum
- 25:41Speaker 1: actually didn't make a great throw, but hey.
- 25:43Speaker 2: He made a bad throw.
- 25:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 25:44Speaker 2: Yes.
- 25:46Speaker 1: All right.
- 25:47Speaker 2: But I think you saw in this game, and I
- 25:48Speaker 2: told you on the pregame show that I thought that
- 25:52Speaker 2: it was Raymond who was more like the Amon Ross St. Brown. Yeah.
- 25:55Speaker 2: And I think you saw that. He's sort of the
- 25:57Speaker 2: Amon Ross St. Brown for Ben Johnson in this offense.
- 26:01Speaker 2: Think about it.
- 26:01Speaker 3: This guy's been basically a fourth receiver and a special
- 26:04Speaker 3: teams returner his entire career.
- 26:05Speaker 2: Now he's a major part of their offense. Right.
- 26:07Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:09Speaker 2: Good for him. It happens.
- 26:10Speaker 1: You know how we joke how Demarcus Robinson makes plays
- 26:13Speaker 1: in these games every year, even though he's like 55
- 26:16Speaker 1: years old? Yes, the Eagles say. Exactly.
- 26:19Speaker 2: It's funny you say that just before we wrap up.
- 26:22Speaker 2: There's guys in the league like that. It always fascinates me.
- 26:25Speaker 2: The guys that seem like they're with a different team
- 26:27Speaker 2: every year, but everywhere they go, they produce, but yet
- 26:30Speaker 2: they're never brought back. Or maybe they think they should
- 26:33Speaker 2: get more money. I don't know the reason. It seems
- 26:35Speaker 2: like they're never with the same team the next year.
- 26:37Speaker 2: Of course.
- 26:38Speaker 1: It's funny how that works.
- 26:39Speaker 2: Yeah. All right.
- 26:41Speaker 1: Great stuff. Greg, thank you very much. We'll do this
- 26:44Speaker 1: again next week after the Eagles-Rams, and we'll see if
- 26:46Speaker 1: anything improved on either side of the football. That's going
- 26:49Speaker 1: to do it for this episode of Inside the Tape
- 26:52Speaker 1: here on Inside the Birds for Greg Cosell and Adam Kaplan.
- 26:55Speaker 1: I'm Jeff Mosher. We'll catch you all on the next one.
