- Trinity Dirks: What is the weirdest thing that has been in your house? As of lately? As of this morning, this morning we woke up and there was like this weird ting ting and scratching noise coming from like our fireplace. I was like, there's something in the fireplace. And he's like, no, can't be. like, no, there is definitely a so i call him And he's like, I don't know, he's in the bathroom or upstairs or something. He comes downstairs, he's like, oh yeah, there is something in there. He opens the top of the fireplace and there's a bird, a live bird, which is a night. That's a terrifying experience. It fell from the roof down the, all the way down into the fireplace and was trying to scratch its way back up, I guess. did it go back up? No. What is your signature cow crazy? Like our craziest of all stories? Or just like what's her number? Okay, I have two that are probably like equally as crazy. One is worse than the other in different ways. A1. We had get it out. So then Keith says to me, ⁓ I'm going to like open it, try to grab it. Just put this cardboard here to keep it from flying out. I was like, OK. The moment Keith reached in there, that bird went boop out, into my window, ⁓ off. ⁓ And she looks crazy. Okay? She's got like a horn that's like backwards and one that's like, the other one's like straight up. Like she looks nuts She, the moment you walk anywhere, her head's up and she's just like going. It doesn't matter what you're doing, where you are. The moment she goes to calve you will never find her. ⁓ she's gone. This year she went through... Was dayzed got back, blew into the other window and then Keith caught it. That, I was terrified. know. The idea of something, it was like flying around. It was flying at this window. I was running up the stairs. ⁓ I did not, I was not helpful. I can't help you. Fight or flight? She chose flight. Goodbye, can't help you, bye. No, no thank you. No critters like that. Okay, so on that note, this was like two years ago or something. My sister-in-law, so they live past us. three fences, two fences, calved in the creek bed, like by the creek bed. So we like had them in a nice laid out area. Didn't see her. The boys are like, oh, I never really noticed her. No, I noticed that cow. She looks like anxiety. She brings anxiety to the herd. And sure enough, yeah, she calves. So she like calved by the creek. We were trying to get her in. We're like, this is still when we had quite a bit of snow. It's like two weeks ago. but they have a farmyard. thankfully Jorim was like in the yard and like maybe one of the other brothers was in the yard, but her husband was gone. He was doing something else. And she like, she opens the door and she like yells for the guys or whatever. There was a bat in her kitchen. Oh no. No, that's so much worse than a bird. I'm not gonna lie. Oh my god. How does that even happen? How does that even happen? I don't know. We don't know how it got in. There was a bat in her kitchen. Oh no. No, that's so much worse than a bird. I'm not gonna lie. Oh my god. How does that even happen? How does that even happen? I don't know. We don't know how it got in. We're chasing her on the side by side. Nope, sorry, on the sled. Side by side couldn't make it. Her calf is just like laying in the bush. That's the other thing. She'll hide it. She'll stash it. Yeah, she'll stash it. She won't calf in any area. Like in our calving area, there's three different fields. We calve in the middle one and then we send them out either south or west. Like and so Jorim had to go in there and catch this bat. what? What did he catch it with? I don't know like a basket or a pot or like something like ⁓ don't bat for supper tonight. ⁓ but like a like bat. They're so gross. They're like mice with wings. Ew. ⁓ ⁓ I felt so bad for her. That's rough. No. Yeah, it's like a mouse in your kitchen, but like worse because it's flying around. they're disgusting. Yeah. She will not be in the middle bush. She will jump west, she'll jump south. But then trying to tag her calf. She's nuts. Nuts. Last year she kind of bluffed a little bit until she didn't. And I was trying to get a video of her like face because she looks psychotic. And Keith's like, put your phone down and help me now. Next time you see her, you should take a picture. Yeah, if I can get close enough. Yeah. So wait, also on the bird note, I have a crow coming and stealing my eggs from my chicken coop. So not in your house. How's it getting in? have like a little door where I open up the coop so my chickens can free range. and it's like going in into this tiny door. I mean, it's like one foot by one foot. It's going in through the chicken door and it took two days worth of eggs. Like it took all of the eggs. That's probably like 30 eggs. In one night? During the day. I'll try because she looks crazy and it doesn't matter what you do. You can't get within 20 feet of her. The closest is like a hundred and she's just like dodging you. then to this time she spent, I think her calf was like six or seven days old by the time we got it. ⁓ yeah. Even remotely close to it. Yeah. And what had happened was it was like slowly, she was like slowly walking out the back alleyway to where we were calving. During the day. ⁓ like when they're out. they're out free ranging. He sneaks He sneaks in. And I hear my rooster. If I'm outside, I can hear him make a noise. And I know that the crow's like sneaking in because he makes this certain noise. Yeah, he lets all the ladies know. then I watch them all like they'll all go under my deck because they're scared of this crow. And she just like, Keith like ahead, dropped the gate, we just like left that gate open ⁓ she came in with her calf. Well, then we had to like tag her calf. We for her to go out a different gate because as soon as she sees you, she leaves. ⁓ But calf didn't cross because it was muddy. We like snatched that calf, thank goodness it was a heifer we Tag, tag, gone. ⁓ That's it. then we like send him out to what we call like the middle bush. We just let her run. ⁓ You know, just. ⁓ So I have to like run over there and yell at it, but it's like flying out with eggs. But I want my chickens to free range because it's hot now. I can't just leave them in the coop and we don't have a fence set up. that's. Can you just let them out and then close the door again? Where are going to lay their eggs? In my bush? The crow will come and eat all the eggs anyways. There's just a point where you're like, okay, whatever whatever whatever happens. Yeah, it's okay. You just go you go sweetie and then my other crazy one It's only when she calves. Yeah a normal cow from like November when we wean Tell April May. Yeah, the moment she calves dumb the wires are just like Short-circuiting like can't We have to build a fence that's I guess but I didn't with the top Yeah, there needs to be a top on the fence because it's gorgeous. Oh, it's gonna go in and get drawn to kill it and then hang it over the door Yes, I was also But Jorim needs to sit there and like watch it. They're really gonna be the right one. It's not maybe you get like a I did find like dummy ones, but we need to them up or something Can't help you. It's called postpartum depression. It's so bad. like, so the first note I have on her, like in my app, is can't get this cow through the West Gate, which is where we used to send or where we send our young animals. So this has been an issue with every calf. But as she's gotten older, she's now no longer in the Westfield. She goes south. Newest update. Still can't get her through the South to the South. ⁓ you have like we. And then I'm like, are my chickens gonna be scared of the dummy? ⁓ maybe. I don't think so. come out and be like, could you imagine? Chickens just running. Why did the chickens never go into the coop? No, because Ashley was having problems with the crow getting into hers. I don't think it went in there. Like it was just going in the fence and hung it on the fence and the chickens didn't care, but the rest of the crows wouldn't go close. Because they're like somebody, somebody has killed one of me. Yeah. We cannot keep going. Yeah. open that gate, she would run anywhere but, like you could have three gates open, she'll just run through the fence the other way. With her calf. I mean, what are you? What are you doing? We're trying to get you out of here. So you don't have to do this. And she's got like a massive bag. Oh, big old milkin bag. We call her a dual purpose cow. Just huge. And she's just dumb. But even if even if you wanted to work with her, like And crows are like, you know my mom told me that crows will like leave you gifts and That's I was just gonna ask, is he least leaving you something while I'm so offended. He's not even leaving me gifts. He's just stealing your just stealing my eggs. If he left me a pebble or something I'd be like, ⁓ this is actually kind of cute. No, nothing. He's just stealing You should try and like leave something in there for him to take other than your eggs. But then the chickens are just gonna eat it or whatever. at any point if her calf ever needs to get on her for some reason, it'll never happen. We'll just have to bottle feed it. I don't know. You'll never get her. You will never ever, ever get her. Generally those ones don't need help though. No, I know. And so that's why they're both still here. Is because they give a good calf every single year. And so this year when A1 was out, Keith was like, distraught because we spent like a while trying to get her in and like her just... Hmm, that's terrifying. Or I need to have like an egg and put something in it and then the crow dies. Yeah, they don't like mustard. ⁓ I don't know if crows don't like mustard. Chickens don't supposedly like mustard. don't know. Anyways. It's so much snow you can't do anything. My dad, my father-in-law says, ⁓ know, it's just like part of the, just part of it. Like I did it once, you know, everybody's got crazy cows, you just deal with it. And then once we have, once she quits giving us calves, we'll deal with her. I. Okay, so what's come into your house, Lace? Well, since we're on the topic of birds. Two years ago? My daughter had, it was like a wild bird, but she'd open the door and call it and it would follow her into the house. What? And hang out in the house with her and if like David and I went in, it would fly back out the door. She's a bird whisperer. But like if it was just her in the house... In the moment. In the moment. Tried to be polite. My mom said I use my customer service voice. Very nice. I said something that's effective like, ⁓ so we're still going to deal with it, but it's not you who deals with it. It's Keith and I who has to chase her. that's... she'd go call it in. It happened multiple times. Whoa. That's so weird. wild. That's crazy. Was it a baby bird? No, I think it was a full grown bird. It was little, but it was a little bird. Should we just call it, like, hey birdie? And he's like, yes, I did my time with my own. 100 % and that's what said. I did my time. And I was just like, but why do we have to put in the time? She's nuts. And then she gets the whole herd stirred up. Oh, yeah. I hate that. she's not bluffing. I would cull her. That cow doesn't bluff. That cow is coming from your lights out. Put her on with all your But then my question is, I'm curious if we'll ever actually get her on a truck, either or of them. I think she made bird noises, not just like call it by name. I was like, what are we doing for the call? What is the call? Yeah, because the first time, yeah, she whistles. So the first time I was like, there's a bird in the house. And she's like, I know mom, I called it in. I was like, you're like, wait, what? No, you didn't. I was like, it just, it was flying. It flew in the door. She's like, no, mom, I was calling it in. It came. And I was like, hmm. Okay. And then like, You might get A 16 on the really have a good like... We do we just rebuilt it. ⁓ okay. She doesn't like the shoot. So we load through our shoots. How are you getting her? Don't ground load. a chance. Do you preg check? Does she go through She goes through when we preg check. OK. So we might. You might be able to get her through. Get her in the middle. couple. Yeah. I don't know. Can't be first. But yeah, I'll post pictures because the one she looks psychotic. You're like, you look like you should be in a psych ward. I don't know. You look crazy. That's funny. I don't know, maybe a week later, stupid little bird is back in the house. Oh my gosh. And I was like, she's like, I called it in, mom. It's my friend. It's like a friend. And it just like would fly around. Just do its thing. Yeah. And then if like we'd come in, it would just fly back out the door. Super weird. That's wild. That's crazy. But yeah, and this year I've been chased by more cows than you ever have. Than I've ever been Yeah, every time we actually like talk to Breanna she's like, yeah, I got chased. I got run around. I don't understand. Like cow chased me. I was the target. L230E, target. ⁓ Okay, well guess we've all had something fun in our house. Birds. All right, have a good week guys. We'll see you next time. Yeah. 125 well mind you she was on a rope and chased me around the bale Keith was like she wasn't really coming for you like yes I've still done a lot of running this year a lot more than I would like exercise program. Yeah, I guess so. weight lost program 101. Yeah. Anyways, those are my cows are after you. I don't know. Anyways. Oh man. Well we still have our cow in our field. We... She's just like... like three episodes ago? Yeah, literally. Probably. Yeah. Three or four? Okay, so she's still hanging out. So she's still hanging out. And She... Me and the kids went to look for the rope the other day. ⁓ yeah. We haven't found the rope. not around her neck. No, it's not around her neck. She's free ditched it at some point. She's free, but she's just like roaming our field which had corn in it, but now they came and like disced it. so there's nothing there. So now there's like not a lot there for her and she's we have some grass like in our dugout area that she can hang out in but she's just like still chillin and she's just like watching the disc go by like her cud Like just happy as can be and I'm like okay, she's gonna calve in because Jorim has no time to like Bring her so I'm like maybe we'll put the calf in the trailer and then maybe she'll follow the but it's hard when they get Isolated like that for long. ⁓ They don't Just the cow of me. Yeah She is lacy But I'm very interested to see like what Jorm's gonna do and when because like he has no time ⁓ So what if she ends up with we had someone the grazing tenure that I kid you not they were there's two out there yeah She might be there forever now. That's I mean they came back, but they were actually like skittish like absolutely Yeah, you couldn't work. That's probably where A 1 came from I don't know especially when they're yeah, especially when they're like isolated then they're not with the herd and then They just kind of chill. Yeah. I guess we'll see because she was nuts-o when we were trying to load her the first time and now she's been isolated for like a month and a half. she's probably gonna be crazy. Have you ever been chased by a cow? thanks for hanging out with us today on ranch wives unsupervised if you've enjoyed the chaos hit the like button drop a comment with your own ranch story and Subscribe on YouTube Spotify and Apple podcast ⁓ you never miss an episode ⁓ Not me personally. I'm always like watching out and like... You've never had that adrenaline rush? No. I'm so sorry for you. You have to experience it once. Typically I'm like... The fear of your life? the sidelines. The first time I ever got chased was last year at the vet's. You know how like at North Peace, you get chased at the vet? So this poor calf had like a tongue issue, okay? It's tongue was tongueless swollen New episodes drop every Thursday. Follow us on social media @ Ranch Wives Unsupervised for more unfiltered fun between episodes. We'll catch you next time. Stay unsupervised, ladies. They messed around with her tongue and then we were getting her back in the trailer we had our calf I was trying to bring her calf in and she's seen that like I just was on the wrong side of the gate again Okay, it's okay so I was and I was crawling up, okay? But I'd never Not like that like I've been like, you know, yeah, when they're like thinking about it, but they haven't like done it Yeah, I've had a lot of that Yes, but this cow I was running like turning up the fence also. We're like My town jeans and I was not They're like tight. Yeah, like they're cute. They're they're pretty they're not super functional I was like trying to get that fence relatively fast. I was not getting apparently it felt really fast in my head Keith was like you were ⁓ ⁓ Slow and I was like, but she had her butt her face up my butt and was like, ⁓ I'm doing me up there and then I got on the other side she just walked back to her calf like nothing happened and I was like That was the start of ⁓ what that is, but there is an adrenaline rush. I was like shaking the first time it happened I didn't know what to do. Probably shaking worse than when your cow happened, but I don't Ignorance is bliss. Ignorance is bliss. But yeah, I just didn't know what to, I don't know. And then ever since you said the story of like, they're not bluffing. I'm like, okay. And then I say, I'm like, they're really not. They're really not, no. I like to think I'm tough and then they look at me and go, haha! Okay bye! You can go, okay bye! No thank you! What about you? Growing up it was 35C. She was mean. was Is this from the broke your nose Yeah. Like she'd come across you every year. Gorgeous calf, but... See that's the thing, they told her nice No problems! are calving, like those moms are good. It's just like the grandma or the great great grandma. That's just crazy. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's so funny. Hey. How they, yeah, how sometimes it crosses and other times it doesn't. Yeah. Yeah. And then, ⁓ David had a cow. Wait, tell us when we got married. there was just like, she was always chasing you up the fence or like. Always. Yeah, like you didn't go in the fence if 35C was there and like when you're calving you'd leave a note for the person on night check or day check 35C is in. ⁓ so that everyone knows. Yeah, you left a note. That's how bad it was. Yeah, you had to leave a note. Sticky note on the door. 35C. Well, we had a whiteboard or something. No, we had paper. so and then like on the desk or whatever in the barn, you just you'd write a note with like this cow came in or that cow came in or did this or nothing happened or whatever, right? So that when somebody comes for night check then they know. Yeah, Yeah, so it was just like 35 Cs in pen. So as long as you weren't in her pen, were you okay? Yeah, she never came over the fence to get you. We didn't have longhorns for a couple years. ⁓ they're mean. They are mean. And they're scary because they swing their horns and impale you. Yes. Yeah. And they're wide, like they're big. Yeah. with longhorns, like the radius is hard to understand. Like what that radius is. when you're sorry rope radio. No rope radius or like a different. No like the board radius. ⁓ yeah like where Can you be like five feet away and they can still hook at you. Cause if they just lean their head a little bit they're like right there. ⁓ yeah. ⁓ my gosh. But David had a. Yeah sorry I interrupted back. Yeah so he had a cow and we got married. Well we both kind of had our own herd and then I sold my. because my brother and I shared. So I sold my shares to my brother when we got married and then we just had his, but we were cowboying. So his cow stayed at his parents. And then when we bought cows, we took his three or four or whatever we're at his parents into our herd. And yeah, same thing. She'd jump the fence, calve in the bush every year, except she was a crappy cow because her calf never lived. So, or at least not at our house. We gave her two chances. See, probably two more than you should have. That's the thing. Yeah. But then you're like, but what if next year it'll be better? Yeah, like what if the first year was fluke and then it was cold and snowy? Yeah, what if it just happened? Second year was in the bush in a snow pile? Like, nope. You're done. is it with a snow bush and a bush? A snow pile and a bush that is like, ⁓ that looks like a really appealing place. Or like right next to a hay bale. I'd like to kill my calf. Yeah, why are we? You just get really cozy. Or puddles. Yeah, puddles. On a wet year, they're just like, ⁓ let me have a calf in a Right in that wet puddle. Cold, wet puddle at 3 a.m. I just don't get it. Yeah. Now we have a red cow. Oh yeah. She wasn't too bad when I was in, but I know exactly who you're talking about. She... No, different cow. Oh, different one? I don't know why that one chased you. You have like a target on your... Yeah, I know. It was a different one. So she was a yearling. That's your perfume And we were hauling... Yes, me. I was hauling them to his... grandparents like to put out the pasture and the trailer door came open or like the sliding one slid or something and I look out the like I look in the mirror to see her somersaulting down the road. Lacey! Okay, A, she broke me because now I am like I don't want to drive the truck and trailer anywhere because all I can see every time I look in the mirror is this cow rolling out the back but B, mentally I broke her and she is psychotic. We have tried to put her on. Trailer again to load her again. She won't she will jump the chute. Oh, yeah, I've been over like she ain't having no part of that And like she's like where what are we doing? Why are you here? No, she like got up and took off I'm sorry. I think his grandpa, cause David was working, so I was calling them. on my own. I think his grandpa had driven up with the truck to like help or see or whatever. So he was there or was following behind or something. So then, but yeah, then she was out and we had to like go try and get her back, but she was a little nutty. So did you end up ever getting your back? Sorry. Did you ever end up getting her back? like in the trailer or you just had to bring her home? No, we just left her on the home quarter for the summer because she was not, we tried a couple of times and she would just jump over the, as soon as the crawl got small, she was jumping up and over. So. ⁓ my God. That happened to Jorim when we were hauling bulls one time. The door opened. Are they traumatized too? goes the bulls, no, but they're bulls. So. I think he had to like go back, his horse and like, cause there was probably didn't help that she was a yearling. ⁓ So right when she's like, you know. Impressionable. It's her teenage years. Yeah. Yeah. She's already in the rough of it. Yeah. I think the bulls were just like, what, what just happened? Whatever. Did they just like fall out? Yeah, I think so. I think he was like starting to go fast and then they fell out. was like just by his parents. Like he me to pass the road. I hadn't got past our, the, end of our quarter. Yeah. ⁓ okay. So it wasn't driving that fast. Yeah. But still, we just like... Well, I only lost because then I hit the brakes. So they all like piled up in the front. And then I ran and pulled the door back across. Yeah. And it was like it wasn't open that wide. Like they must have been like pushing against her in the back. And she just nudged it open. However it opened. We have like a... I don't know. But on our... You know how you have the big door that opens up and then you have the side part. There's like a... I want to call it like a locking mechanism, but I don't think it's actually locked. I think it's like a pin through a thing holds it to the big door. There's like a pin that goes through to hold it. ⁓ Do you know what I'm trying to say? I don't know if I'm doing it any justice. So I don't, do you not have a pin or is that, I don't know. Is that not all stock trailers? I have no idea. Well, they're all different. Ours like has like a click mechanism, but our stock trailer does not have a way to get out. If both doors are closed, you're stuck in there. There's no handle on the inside or like unlatch on the inside. No ours either. No ours wouldn't be either because then your animals could unlatch themselves. Yeah. know but what if you what if you get stuck in there? I guess you crawl out the hole. Like crawl out the side. Yeah you could be like whiskey. Yeah. That dog could jump straight out the hole. Yes she would jump out a closed window. Girl had places to be. Yeah. Okay that's so interesting. Yeah. Now I feel like I need to I told Keith that you had lost hes like, No, I'm sure she didn't lose. I'm pretty sure we also have had that happen. Yeah, I don't know. I don't know. It just like it must not like have latched properly or yeah, I guess if they rub up when there's enough pressure and or yeah, you hit a bump. I don't know. don't know. You know, there was a I mean, I don't know how recent this is, but on social media, I seen like a Cattle hauler rolled in Alberta somewhere. I mean, I know that's why you have insurance and stuff like that. The idea of that, like hauling livestock, I know we're talking about crazy cows, so that's totally different, but they would be crazy coming out of there after that. Yeah, but you could, especially if it's a full liner there's probably gonna some fatalities in that. That's such a crazy thing, because it's not really in... Your control like I get and that's I guess that is why they have insurance I get that but still that's like that's crazy. Can you imagine being a first responder like pulling up on that? ⁓ the nutty cows the nutty cows, but then you're Emergent like you're calling the vets like there's a lot of extra pieces I don't know, it's just like an interesting... I never doesn't happen very often. No, it doesn't. Like, I think there was just a statistic, like speaking about it. It was a... the other thing that I seen was like a towing company that came to help pull the trailer upright. were like, we assisted emergency services. These veterinary services and a bunch of local cattlemen came out and like... That's crazy. ... helped get them. But I was like, can you imagine just like driving and all this and there's just cows? cow spilling out like that's so stressful yeah i mean it's very rare but still it's something i don't know you don't really my goodness i could not i've heard of multiple like a few people that have lost animals out of their back door yes ⁓ yeah it be a pressure thing i think it's more pressure on the right way Or it's not like if you have it just slightly If it just doesn't click all the way for whatever and then they push on it or they hit a bump the right way your door Like they're really not that secure of a thing. Okay, when you say you're hauling bulls Did you mean like you were bringing them home from somewhere? Yeah, like so in the summer the cows are typically at the farm Yeah, and so then we take the bulls to our place in our bush You guys use the truck at home? Yeah, so that they're not close to the cows. How far? Trying to think like how far you are from a farm. We're like... It's like, okay, give me a second. We're like six quarters away. I don't know, it's like three miles or something. miles? Yeah. No, I'm just curious. We don't really haul ours. just... The problem is, is our fields... It's a layout. It's a layout. the thing. It's like we have... the home quarter, but then we have neighbor, neighbor, neighbor, and then our fields. It's not like we can just, every time Jorim moves cows between our place, because we do move cows between our place and their place, have to call the neighbors, let them know, it's kind of a big deal. So sometimes it's easier just to pack them up. It's also better to kick your bulls out if they have to go a ways because to haul them because then they're not going lame. Yeah, then they're not going to get out. We don't. Yeah, like we'll chase our herd to his grandparents, but we normally haul the bull so he doesn't have to walk all the way so that when he is out there, he's not like we don't start him out with half a chance of being lame or whatever. Right. Right. That's fair. Yeah. And then they don't backtrack. Okay, you had mentioned semen testing like a couple episodes ago. Yeah. Do you haul in for that or the vet comes to you? The vet comes to us. Okay. And they've got some sort of thing set Yeah, you put them in the chute. then they do their thing. Okay, I just curious how it worked because we were talking about we're going to keep one longer than we normally do but we should semen test it just for the sake of Yeah, you just put them in the chute and then they come out. Interesting. Do you guys use InTownVet or? I hate it. ⁓ So weird. you use InTownVet? Who do you use? Yeah, Northpeace.
