- 0:00Speaker 1: I get our team. Welcome to another installment the show.
- 0:02Speaker 1: Tiffany and Cook, Bi Anka, Jane and Mary Veronica Chatfield.
- 0:07Speaker 1: We'll start with Cook, who's still just clinging to the
- 0:12Speaker 1: remnants of India. Just I just detected a little chink
- 0:16Speaker 1: in the nirvana, the kind of the glow. But it's
- 0:21Speaker 1: because she's been for an early morning motorbike ride and
- 0:23Speaker 1: she's freezing.
- 0:26Speaker 2: And Altip wouldn't have done that, would she Oltif wouldn't
- 0:28Speaker 2: have got up and started the day with a bit
- 0:31Speaker 2: of I don't know, exciting like.
- 0:34Speaker 1: That, no early morning meditation out on I read somebody,
- 0:38Speaker 1: you know when you your algorithm sends you shit. This
- 0:41Speaker 1: My algorithm sent me I get the intersection of bodybuilding
- 0:45Speaker 1: and motorbikes and philosophy and spirituality, and I ended up
- 0:49Speaker 1: with this.
- 0:50Speaker 3: Thing on by the way high Chatters, Good morning, Hi.
- 0:52Speaker 4: How are you keep going? I'm interested you well.
- 0:56Speaker 1: It sent me this video of this professor to talking
- 1:00Speaker 1: about the physiological, emotional, and psychological and spiritual benefits of
- 1:05Speaker 1: motorbike riding, all these great things that does for you,
- 1:09Speaker 1: And I thought, do you know what? While I personally
- 1:12Speaker 1: I love this, but I can tell you with absolute
- 1:16Speaker 1: certainty that for some people being on a motorbike produces
- 1:19Speaker 1: the opposite effect. I think it depends not on the motorbike,
- 1:23Speaker 1: but one's relationship with motorbike riding.
- 1:27Speaker 3: Have you ever been on a bike? Chatters?
- 1:29Speaker 4: Yeah, I've been on with you.
- 1:31Speaker 5: That's the only time I reckon I've been on one?
- 1:34Speaker 5: Was that years ago?
- 1:37Speaker 3: Was that fucking terrifying? Or how was it?
- 1:40Speaker 4: I just remember you were very safety conscious. You were
- 1:45Speaker 4: Are you sure all the gear was on?
- 1:47Speaker 5: And You're like, you want to hang on and don't
- 1:49Speaker 5: do this and don't do that, and I'm like, okay, okay.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Well, I think at the time I was. I was
- 1:56Speaker 1: riding with the captain of the Melbourne Vixens and an
- 2:00Speaker 1: Australian netball team member, so I probably I thought I've
- 2:04Speaker 1: got a reasonably valuable commodity. That's what you are, a
- 2:08Speaker 1: commodity on board or I don't know, human on board,
- 2:13Speaker 1: and so I was probably a little bit more conscientious
- 2:17Speaker 1: than normal.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:19Speaker 5: Well, I mean, motorbike riding is not really my thing,
- 2:22Speaker 5: but I'm happy to have a go. It was all right,
- 2:26Speaker 5: It's certainly not in my algorithm, that's for sure.
- 2:29Speaker 3: Tip, what's going on? Over there.
- 2:30Speaker 1: You look like you've got a cat doing catastrophic things.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Ah, because I didn't shut the cupboard door. Probably want
- 2:36Speaker 2: to put my motorbike jack away. And now guess who's
- 2:38Speaker 2: jumping all over the clothes and dragging everything out of
- 2:42Speaker 2: the cupboard.
- 2:43Speaker 3: Well, do you want to turn your mic coffin? Go
- 2:45Speaker 3: and attend to that, and I'll talk to chatters. Thank you,
- 2:47Speaker 3: I will do that, all right, You go and do that. Bianca?
- 2:51Speaker 3: What's news? How are you?
- 2:54Speaker 5: Do?
- 2:54Speaker 1: You know what?
- 2:54Speaker 4: I'm pretty good.
- 2:56Speaker 5: I feel like I just life has been crazy the
- 2:59Speaker 5: last couple of years, becoming a mom. And I don't
- 3:04Speaker 5: even think I've been on here since I've.
- 3:06Speaker 4: Had my daughter.
- 3:08Speaker 3: How old is she now?
- 3:09Speaker 4: So she's two and a half?
- 3:11Speaker 3: Wow?
- 3:12Speaker 5: And yeah, I feel like I just well, we all
- 3:15Speaker 5: just bunk it down, as I'm sure many.
- 3:17Speaker 4: Other parents relate.
- 3:18Speaker 5: Just bunk it down and you can get done and
- 3:22Speaker 5: the rest of the time you enjoyed just hanging around
- 3:24Speaker 5: the house and finding, you know, finding the little things,
- 3:29Speaker 5: because they certainly do, that's for sure.
- 3:31Speaker 1: I mean, your background is pretty diverse, so you know,
- 3:35Speaker 1: elite athlete playing for Australia World Cup comm Games gold
- 3:39Speaker 1: medalers captaining arguably the best team in the world, as
- 3:44Speaker 1: in the Melbourne Vixen's club team in the world. For
- 3:46Speaker 1: quite a long time, you were a school teacher who
- 3:49Speaker 1: actually who actually did the training and then went and taught,
- 3:53Speaker 1: unlike many teachers who do teaching and then go and
- 3:55Speaker 1: work in a bar, you know. And you were a
- 4:02Speaker 1: business owner for quite a while. I think you had
- 4:04Speaker 1: a f forty five or two. You're a TV presenter.
- 4:08Speaker 1: You were the host of the Woman's Footy show.
- 4:10Speaker 3: You like you call the Netty.
- 4:13Speaker 1: You do a lot of corporate speaking, you do educational stuff,
- 4:16Speaker 1: you work. What kind of determines what you put your
- 4:21Speaker 1: energy into and what has your attention.
- 4:25Speaker 5: Yeah, that's a really good question. I don't think I
- 4:29Speaker 5: was ever very good at managing it. I mean, you've
- 4:32Speaker 5: known me for a long time. Like I used to
- 4:33Speaker 5: just do everything, say yes to everything. And I think
- 4:37Speaker 5: there's definitely a time and a place where that's a
- 4:39Speaker 5: benefit to do that. And as I've gotten a bit
- 4:44Speaker 5: older and a bit smarter and a bit probably more
- 4:46Speaker 5: understanding of who I am really and what I feel
- 4:49Speaker 5: passionate about, what really drives me and what you know,
- 4:53Speaker 5: fills my cup like a big one on just energy
- 4:56Speaker 5: and just making sure what you're doing is actually giving
- 4:59Speaker 5: you energy and not draining it from you. And so
- 5:03Speaker 5: I think, especially the last couple of years, like my
- 5:05Speaker 5: boundaries have got so much stronger in saying no to
- 5:07Speaker 5: things that I don't think will you know, be of
- 5:10Speaker 5: good use to me or something that I'll enjoy doing.
- 5:13Speaker 5: But I very much find myself now in the place
- 5:15Speaker 5: of working still in the leadership space, working with people
- 5:19Speaker 5: because I love that and that you know, does obviously
- 5:22Speaker 5: tie into the education piece as well from my past,
- 5:26Speaker 5: and then also on the other side of it being
- 5:29Speaker 5: in the media hosting. I work with Fox Sports, so
- 5:33Speaker 5: Fox Netball, I'm doing a bit of Fox Cricket this summer.
- 5:37Speaker 5: That stuff really fills my cup too, because I love
- 5:39Speaker 5: the adrenaline rush that you get of live TV. And
- 5:42Speaker 5: it's like being an athlete. It's sink or swim if
- 5:45Speaker 5: you do your prep and you make sure you know
- 5:48Speaker 5: as much as you can, like when you're on air,
- 5:49Speaker 5: if something stuffs up, then you just got to be
- 5:52Speaker 5: able to you know, figure it out. And I love
- 5:54Speaker 5: that feeling it really. Yeah, it's probably more of an
- 5:57Speaker 5: adrenaline junkie trying to chase that feeling. But that's what
- 6:00Speaker 5: I love about doing live TV. And there's just, you know,
- 6:05Speaker 5: plenty of room for people to give your feedback if
- 6:07Speaker 5: they were on the which you can open or not whatever.
- 6:11Speaker 5: But it's just I like being able to kind of
- 6:14Speaker 5: spend my time in both of those worlds from a
- 6:16Speaker 5: work capacity, and I like having that balance. And I
- 6:19Speaker 5: always used to think it was actually balance is the
- 6:21Speaker 5: wrong work because it's never balanced. But I used to
- 6:25Speaker 5: think I had to have one not title, but just
- 6:30Speaker 5: I would myself. And listening to that bio, I get
- 6:33Speaker 5: I'm like overwhelmed and exhausted because I'm like, sure, I've
- 6:35Speaker 5: done a lot of things, but what I just want
- 6:38Speaker 5: to put your hand on one thing that you can
- 6:39Speaker 5: do one thing, And I'm like, no, I don't want
- 6:41Speaker 5: to ever have to narrow myself down.
- 6:43Speaker 4: I love being able to do lots of different things.
- 6:46Speaker 1: I feel like with somebody like you, who when you're young,
- 6:50Speaker 1: you know you're a really good athlete and your idea
- 6:52Speaker 1: is a good athlete. So there's always going to be
- 6:54Speaker 1: people clamoring for you to be involved with them. And
- 6:56Speaker 1: then off the back of being a good athlete, comes
- 7:00Speaker 1: other opportunities, and like you said, you just say yes
- 7:03Speaker 1: to a lot of stuff because it's all new and
- 7:06Speaker 1: exciting and you're building relationships and new doors are opening
- 7:09Speaker 1: and you're like, fuck, I'll give that a go.
- 7:12Speaker 3: But then you and I was a little.
- 7:13Speaker 1: Bit like that when I opened my gyms and started
- 7:17Speaker 1: doing radio stuff and writing for different outlets, and new
- 7:21Speaker 1: things arise and you just kind of say yes a lot.
- 7:25Speaker 3: But I feel like when you get.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Older, not that you're old, but you're in your forties,
- 7:30Speaker 1: so you know, fucking spring chicken, let's be honest, you
- 7:35Speaker 1: know your middle age, let's be honest. Not But I
- 7:40Speaker 1: think we can become a lot more intentional with our living,
- 7:45Speaker 1: like living consciously and proactively rather than unconsciously and reactively,
- 7:51Speaker 1: where we start to almost design our life other than
- 7:55Speaker 1: just say yes or no toe stuff that just comes along.
- 7:59Speaker 4: Yeah, definitely, I totally agree with that.
- 8:01Speaker 5: And it's and I don't know if that coincided with
- 8:04Speaker 5: me becoming a mum as well and having this whole
- 8:08Speaker 5: emotional layout to what it is to leave the house
- 8:12Speaker 5: or to not be around for her, the intention of
- 8:15Speaker 5: taking on things that mean I leave the house, like
- 8:18Speaker 5: you have to really want to do it, because you
- 8:21Speaker 5: know what it does for everybody else who is, whether
- 8:23Speaker 5: it's you know, Mark, my partner, he's at home, you know,
- 8:26Speaker 5: if I'm traveling into state, and so much of my
- 8:29Speaker 5: work ends up being into state, which I do love,
- 8:32Speaker 5: but that also, you know, adds the extra pressure at
- 8:34Speaker 5: home to be able to do that.
- 8:36Speaker 4: So I'm fortunate that we've been able to make that
- 8:38Speaker 4: all work.
- 8:39Speaker 5: But I certainly, yeah, I think becoming a mum, the
- 8:42Speaker 5: boundaries have had to become a lot stronger.
- 8:44Speaker 4: And also, yeah, you.
- 8:45Speaker 5: Don't want to let this little girl down when you're
- 8:48Speaker 5: not around, if you're doing something that's not actually you know,
- 8:51Speaker 5: for the for the best.
- 8:52Speaker 4: Of both of us and all of us, and for
- 8:54Speaker 4: me as well.
- 8:55Speaker 1: I would imagine that as soon as you become a parent,
- 8:59Speaker 1: that you're looking at the world through a different lens,
- 9:02Speaker 1: like you know, and so everything is different just by
- 9:05Speaker 1: virtue of now there's three not two, you know, and
- 9:08Speaker 1: versus even being in a relationship with Mark, you know,
- 9:12Speaker 1: there's two, not one, but now there's three, and so
- 9:15Speaker 1: it's not like you even need to try to be
- 9:17Speaker 1: different or try to think differently. That's an automatic byproduct
- 9:22Speaker 1: of what is now your new reality, right, Yeah.
- 9:26Speaker 5: And I mean so much of the work that I've
- 9:28Speaker 5: done in the past, whether it's you know, leadership speaking,
- 9:31Speaker 5: working in businesses, working with moms, I just have this
- 9:36Speaker 5: kind of part of me that I'm like, oh, I
- 9:38Speaker 5: never really understood what they were going through as much
- 9:40Speaker 5: as I would say, this is how you get the
- 9:42Speaker 5: best out of yourself, you know, if you get up
- 9:44Speaker 5: in the morning and you've got.
- 9:45Speaker 4: A good routine and blah blah blah blah.
- 9:46Speaker 5: I used to think that was so important, and I
- 9:50Speaker 5: know it is and it certainly has a place, but
- 9:53Speaker 5: just this is on stuff like that that I realized.
- 9:56Speaker 5: I'm like, you know, I'm a mum of one child,
- 9:58Speaker 5: let alone moms and parents multiple children sometimes not possible.
- 10:03Speaker 5: It's absolutely okay that it can be impossible to be
- 10:07Speaker 5: able to get up and set your day up in
- 10:09Speaker 5: that way because these little people need you and wake
- 10:13Speaker 5: you up at whenever they feel like waking you up,
- 10:16Speaker 5: and who knows what the night before has been like,
- 10:18Speaker 5: And so that just adds a whole nother layer of complexity,
- 10:22Speaker 5: I think, to people's lives. And yeah, I felt for
- 10:25Speaker 5: a while I was like Oh, I never really got it,
- 10:27Speaker 5: and now I get it that little bit more too.
- 10:30Speaker 5: When I'm out speaking to a lot of mums, especially mums,
- 10:32Speaker 5: working mums, you know, because it's tough to be able
- 10:36Speaker 5: to do all of that.
- 10:38Speaker 1: It just dawned on me the differences but also the
- 10:42Speaker 1: similarities between you and Tif. You're both forty two. She's
- 10:45Speaker 1: an athlete, she's a boxer. She's a short blonde who
- 10:48Speaker 1: punches people in the face. You're a tall brunette who
- 10:52Speaker 1: used to stop women from shooting goals for a long time.
- 10:57Speaker 3: Is it?
- 11:00Speaker 1: I think, like, what's interesting about you two both is
- 11:03Speaker 1: that both of you.
- 11:07Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 11:07Speaker 1: I haven't spent a lot of time with you over
- 11:09Speaker 1: the last few years, but so I'm not sure. But
- 11:11Speaker 1: definitely with Tiff for a long time, but she's softening.
- 11:14Speaker 1: There was Tiff was like simultaneously wearing a baseball cap
- 11:19Speaker 1: that said fuck off and a T shirt that said
- 11:21Speaker 1: give us a hug. Though, right, so there was a
- 11:23Speaker 1: little bit come here, fuck off, and you had a
- 11:26Speaker 1: bit of that, like when when you were a young athlete,
- 11:29Speaker 1: you were a motherfucker on the court, you were a
- 11:31Speaker 1: sweetheart off it, but you're a complete bitch on it.
- 11:34Speaker 1: Let's be honest, right, you weren't the friendliest or the warmest.
- 11:38Speaker 1: You were highly competitive. But I feel like both of
- 11:43Speaker 1: you have softened. Am I right or no?
- 11:49Speaker 4: Oh? Definitely for me, and I think the minute.
- 11:52Speaker 5: I walked off the court as an athlete, I definitely
- 11:55Speaker 5: started to soften and lose that competitiveness where I really
- 11:58Speaker 5: wanted to do anything to win and I'd take down
- 12:01Speaker 5: anyone that was in my way, like I was very
- 12:03Speaker 5: much driven like that, and I mean, it's exhausting, but
- 12:07Speaker 5: I definitely the minute I walked off the court, and
- 12:09Speaker 5: I've never stepped back on the court, not even socially,
- 12:11Speaker 5: because I almost know how dangerous that will be for me,
- 12:15Speaker 5: for like physically and injuries, but also mentally. I'm like,
- 12:18Speaker 5: I just don't want to put myself in that position
- 12:21Speaker 5: because I know that I'll probably hurt somebody if I
- 12:23Speaker 5: went out there on court and tried to play like
- 12:25Speaker 5: I used to and tif I wonder if that would
- 12:28Speaker 5: be the same for you whenever. I guess boxing is
- 12:30Speaker 5: something that can be always in your life, but I
- 12:33Speaker 5: wonder how you'll feel once you kind of stop that
- 12:36Speaker 5: competitiveness of it all.
- 12:38Speaker 2: It's it's I'm going through an interesting time at the moment,
- 12:42Speaker 2: and a big part of I just had a trip
- 12:44Speaker 2: to India which brought about a massive shift for me,
- 12:47Speaker 2: and part of that before I went away was wanting
- 12:51Speaker 2: to step away from the identity of TIF the boxer,
- 12:55Speaker 2: TIF the trainer, Tiff the athlete, TIF the yeah that
- 12:59Speaker 2: I felt that one little part of me became all
- 13:02Speaker 2: of the parts of me, and all the other parts
- 13:04Speaker 2: got put in a box. So I'm just seeing how
- 13:07Speaker 2: it all fits together at the moment. I don't know
- 13:09Speaker 2: which assumed in.
- 13:10Speaker 5: A way, though, I think compartmentalizing things that was a
- 13:15Speaker 5: way that I often would cope is knowing that I
- 13:17Speaker 5: could put that away in the box and not worry
- 13:19Speaker 5: about it for a little while, and then come back
- 13:20Speaker 5: to it when I felt like I had the right
- 13:22Speaker 5: amount of energy or whatever to go back there. But certainly,
- 13:26Speaker 5: when I had my athlete hat on, I would ignore
- 13:29Speaker 5: everything else because I'm like, you know, this is so
- 13:31Speaker 5: important to me. I need to do what everything it
- 13:33Speaker 5: takes to be good at this, and I could quite
- 13:37Speaker 5: often switch off a lot of things that probably were
- 13:39Speaker 5: more important than I needed to focus on. But I
- 13:43Speaker 5: think that's how you cope in sport and as athletes,
- 13:45Speaker 5: I think that you kind of have to have a
- 13:46Speaker 5: level of that.
- 13:48Speaker 2: I found that A huge positive to that when I
- 13:52Speaker 2: needed it was seeing how it shifted me in my life.
- 13:56Speaker 2: So I spent all this time in training in the
- 13:58Speaker 2: gym and boxing ring thinking that I was just doing that,
- 14:02Speaker 2: and then after a few years I looked back and went, oh,
- 14:04Speaker 2: that actually changed tiff Cook outside the ring. That changed
- 14:09Speaker 2: how I am in as an employee, as a business person,
- 14:12Speaker 2: as a friend. It changed everything. But I guess that's
- 14:15Speaker 2: what I'm getting at now, is going well, it's there's
- 14:19Speaker 2: a part of that that needs to be left behind.
- 14:21Speaker 2: So do I still need that sport or should I
- 14:23Speaker 2: Do I need.
- 14:24Speaker 4: To shift that?
- 14:26Speaker 2: Yeah, because it exists, whether you think it's happening or not.
- 14:30Speaker 3: Yeah, I love the way. I love the way Bianca.
- 14:33Speaker 1: You just started hosting the show, then, No, I love it.
- 14:37Speaker 1: I love I'm like, oh, here's the TV presenter, so TIF,
- 14:42Speaker 1: so TIF for you.
- 14:44Speaker 3: No, I fucking love it.
- 14:45Speaker 4: You just step aside, Craig.
- 14:47Speaker 1: Yeah, feel free to both of you. Feel free to
- 14:50Speaker 1: ask questions and take the reins at any time.
- 14:53Speaker 3: I wanted to ask you. Bee how do you.
- 15:00Speaker 1: So, now it's forty two, been a mum, being a
- 15:02Speaker 1: business woman, being a bunch of different things, what do
- 15:05Speaker 1: you decide, like right now and moving forward.
- 15:11Speaker 3: To do and.
- 15:12Speaker 1: Also to not do, like what needs to go on
- 15:14Speaker 1: the later list, what needs to get put on the shelf,
- 15:18Speaker 1: because we know we can't do you know, I'm I
- 15:21Speaker 1: figure this out with my PhD and my business and
- 15:24Speaker 1: my podcast and trying to stay in shape. And I
- 15:27Speaker 1: can't do sixty four things. Well, so I need to
- 15:29Speaker 1: do four or five things. And I get lots of
- 15:33Speaker 1: other opportunities, as do both of you, and I even
- 15:36Speaker 1: great opportunities. I've got to say no because I can't
- 15:38Speaker 1: fit anything else in. So what's your criteria for figuring
- 15:43Speaker 1: out where you invest your time and energy?
- 15:48Speaker 5: Well, I mean it simply comes to you know. So
- 15:51Speaker 5: during I'm contracted with Fox Sports, so that is obviously
- 15:54Speaker 5: a priority. When the when busy in whether it's netball
- 15:58Speaker 5: season and so that's free example, I know that from
- 16:02Speaker 5: the end of March through till generally the end of August,
- 16:07Speaker 5: I will be traveling most weekends or I'll have games
- 16:10Speaker 5: on most weekends and maybe some things during the week
- 16:13Speaker 5: and that's like an intense kind of period of time
- 16:16Speaker 5: for me and then obviously my family. And so basically
- 16:20Speaker 5: I just make sure that whatever I take on during
- 16:22Speaker 5: that time fits within my week where it's not going
- 16:26Speaker 5: to obviously disrupt what I'm doing for network, but also
- 16:28Speaker 5: that I've got the energy to do it, because it's
- 16:30Speaker 5: quite exhausting being up and about in the commentary and
- 16:34Speaker 5: all of that. You know, it takes a lot out
- 16:36Speaker 5: of you, and I've got to make sure that I
- 16:37Speaker 5: have on a Monday morning some time to kind of
- 16:40Speaker 5: to myself, to recover and to just you know, walk around,
- 16:44Speaker 5: go to the park whatever we're doing.
- 16:46Speaker 4: So I try and only take on.
- 16:47Speaker 5: One other thing in a week of work when I'm
- 16:50Speaker 5: in netball season, and once I'm out of that netball
- 16:53Speaker 5: season again, I'll wagh it up and see what projects
- 16:56Speaker 5: are have in front of me, and if it might
- 16:57Speaker 5: be a big chunk of leadership work that I'll do
- 17:00Speaker 5: with a client, then I will kind of set that
- 17:03Speaker 5: asign and say I'm only available to do that in September.
- 17:06Speaker 5: And it becomes a bit cutthroat, and it's just you've
- 17:10Speaker 5: got to take me or leave me like I can
- 17:12Speaker 5: do it.
- 17:12Speaker 4: In that time, so.
- 17:14Speaker 5: I just can't do it rather than trying to, you know,
- 17:17Speaker 5: force and pressure on everybody else to make sure that
- 17:19Speaker 5: I can do it.
- 17:20Speaker 4: So don't.
- 17:21Speaker 5: I don't have the clear equation of how it works
- 17:24Speaker 5: perfectly because I don't think it ever does. But Mark,
- 17:27Speaker 5: my partner, is so organized, like far more organized than me,
- 17:30Speaker 5: and he is constantly me about diary and schedule on
- 17:33Speaker 5: time and what are we doing, and he obviously works
- 17:34Speaker 5: as well. So I'm just very fortunate that I have
- 17:39Speaker 5: a partner like him who drives me crazy with his organization.
- 17:43Speaker 5: But on the flip side, make sure that we can
- 17:46Speaker 5: fit in everything that we can do and if there's
- 17:48Speaker 5: something that I really love and that I you know,
- 17:51Speaker 5: when I got a call about doing some Fox cricket stuff,
- 17:53Speaker 5: I was like, yes, like I want to do it.
- 17:55Speaker 5: I love working in other sports and so that was
- 17:58Speaker 5: kind of because it really me. I was like, well,
- 18:00Speaker 5: I have to try and make time for this, and
- 18:03Speaker 5: fortunately it's over summer where there is some time.
- 18:05Speaker 3: So do you do you have like last night I did.
- 18:10Speaker 1: I'm running a mentoring group at the moment, which is
- 18:12Speaker 1: just a bunch of people online on a Monday night
- 18:14Speaker 1: for two hours, right, and it starts at seven, and
- 18:20Speaker 1: literally it four minutes past seven. I'm downstairs in the
- 18:24Speaker 1: four minutes two seven, I'm downstairs getting a cup of
- 18:26Speaker 1: tea and bare feet and shorts and a black T shirt,
- 18:29Speaker 1: fucking around. And then I sit down and like, I
- 18:32Speaker 1: know what I'm going to talk to them about. But
- 18:34Speaker 1: it is, you know, like talking to you and tiar
- 18:36Speaker 1: f right now, seventeen hundred and eighty odd episodes in
- 18:39Speaker 1: it's it's just like completely comfortable. It's like completely it's
- 18:44Speaker 1: my natural habitat. There's no stress, there's no anxiety, there's
- 18:48Speaker 1: no fear. It's just a thing that I'm doing in
- 18:50Speaker 1: the moment. But then there are other things, you know,
- 18:54Speaker 1: like last week I did two talks face to face
- 18:57Speaker 1: live talks Tuesday Wednesday, seven hundred people each talk, where
- 19:00Speaker 1: it's a bit different and I don't stress about it,
- 19:03Speaker 1: but there's a different kind of getting ready process, getting
- 19:06Speaker 1: ready practically, mentally, emotionally, when you've got to do stuff
- 19:11Speaker 1: like Telly where you can't do it again because it's
- 19:15Speaker 1: live and it's in the moment. Do you have like rituals,
- 19:19Speaker 1: Do you have a certain prep that you've got to
- 19:22Speaker 1: go through. I don't mean in terms of research beforehand,
- 19:26Speaker 1: but on the day for you to fucking so the
- 19:28Speaker 1: cameras camera's on, you're live, you're standing with a mic
- 19:33Speaker 1: by the side of the court. How do you get
- 19:35Speaker 1: yourself in that optimal state?
- 19:37Speaker 5: Hmm, well, you know, I actually think it's very similar
- 19:41Speaker 5: to what I would do as an athlete like I
- 19:43Speaker 5: as long as I've done my prep and I can
- 19:45Speaker 5: park that, generally, I'll do that the night before, even
- 19:48Speaker 5: if that means staying up however late I need to
- 19:50Speaker 5: stay up to get it done. I'd just like to
- 19:52Speaker 5: be able to on game day if be able to
- 19:55Speaker 5: get into the courts or wherever. And obviously we're in
- 19:59Speaker 5: hair make up for an hour because this face doesn't
- 20:03Speaker 5: look like this on TV and all this hair.
- 20:08Speaker 4: So you're in the hair and makeup for an hour.
- 20:10Speaker 5: And for me, the most stressful part is if I'm
- 20:12Speaker 5: in here and makeup and I'm trying to do notes
- 20:14Speaker 5: and trying to figure everything out and not able to
- 20:17Speaker 5: just have a general chat about anything and everything. I
- 20:19Speaker 5: know that I'm putting myself under the pump. So I'm
- 20:22Speaker 5: just trying to be as prepped as I can get there,
- 20:24Speaker 5: and then I just want to have a bit of
- 20:25Speaker 5: fun in the lead up to the game, you know,
- 20:28Speaker 5: talk to the players if you see them around, not
- 20:30Speaker 5: feel like you've got to do too much. And also,
- 20:34Speaker 5: which I'm sure you'd be very interested in, creiggro On
- 20:36Speaker 5: Tiff is also from a nutrition point of view, making
- 20:40Speaker 5: sure you've eaten really well beforehand, because we could be
- 20:44Speaker 5: on air for a good chunk of time like you
- 20:47Speaker 5: might be you know, five So this Wednesday, actually we're
- 20:50Speaker 5: on air I think for about six.
- 20:52Speaker 4: Hours because there's two games and.
- 20:54Speaker 5: You can't really eat and you can't really go to
- 20:56Speaker 5: the toilet through that six hours, so you don't have time,
- 21:01Speaker 5: so you can't really be drinking way too much water
- 21:04Speaker 5: and things like that, so you have to really be
- 21:05Speaker 5: prepped beforehand, otherwise you get caught in that really dodgy
- 21:10Speaker 5: loophole of having the lolly from the start and then
- 21:13Speaker 5: feeling terrible because you smashed the whole bag of lollies
- 21:16Speaker 5: and you sugar crash and that, you know, the roller
- 21:20Speaker 5: coaster ride. So even that kind of stuff I think
- 21:22Speaker 5: is important. Making sure you've had something good to eat,
- 21:24Speaker 5: some good protein, and then it gets you through the day.
- 21:27Speaker 1: And also I think people would not typically the average
- 21:31Speaker 1: person watching you on Telly wouldn't think about understandably the
- 21:36Speaker 1: cognitive load of needing to be switched on sharp, like
- 21:41Speaker 1: fully present, no fatigue for six hours, where you think about,
- 21:48Speaker 1: if I'm reading an academic paper for twenty minutes, it
- 21:52Speaker 1: can put me into a coma because there's a heavy
- 21:54Speaker 1: cognitive load, and I don't love it, right, And obviously
- 21:57Speaker 1: you enjoy it a little bit more than I enjoyed
- 22:00Speaker 1: reading academic papers. But being able to be fully present
- 22:03Speaker 1: and switched on and sharp for six hours is like
- 22:07Speaker 1: running a cognitive marathon.
- 22:09Speaker 5: And the whole time I still feel like, even though
- 22:11Speaker 5: I've done it for a while, I still feel like
- 22:13Speaker 5: I've got my l plates on. Like you're just constantly learning,
- 22:16Speaker 5: which is a good thing. You never feel comfortable like
- 22:20Speaker 5: you've nailed it. You're always constantly trying to think of
- 22:23Speaker 5: different ways you can do it, and you.
- 22:26Speaker 4: Know, and anything can happen the moment.
- 22:27Speaker 5: One of the first games I did on Fox, We're
- 22:30Speaker 5: over in Adelaide, and there was an issue with the court,
- 22:33Speaker 5: so the game was delayed an hour, so then you
- 22:36Speaker 5: had to feel that hour and then at halftime, the
- 22:39Speaker 5: game got canceled because of a power outage, and then
- 22:42Speaker 5: again you had to just feel and it's just stuff
- 22:45Speaker 5: like that that you can't ever relax. You've got someone
- 22:47Speaker 5: talking in your ear trying to guide you, and then
- 22:50Speaker 5: you've got the crowd noise, and then it's just there's
- 22:52Speaker 5: just so much stimulus everywhere. It's really hard to focus,
- 22:57Speaker 5: far more than what it ever was as an athlete.
- 23:00Speaker 5: But then again, I like that that it drives me
- 23:03Speaker 5: to just try and be better every time I do it.
- 23:06Speaker 1: And also on top of that, you've got the anxiety
- 23:09Speaker 1: of all the uncertainty in the moment because you knew
- 23:12Speaker 1: what was coming and now that's not coming. Yes, and
- 23:16Speaker 1: they're going to you. You've got to feel or you've
- 23:18Speaker 1: got to stretch this or like with what.
- 23:21Speaker 5: Yeah, okay, yes, So everyone who gives us feedback about
- 23:25Speaker 5: how what we're.
- 23:26Speaker 4: Doing in the moment, you just don't quite understand.
- 23:29Speaker 3: All that goes into I have a question for you
- 23:32Speaker 3: that's from left field.
- 23:33Speaker 1: So most most people that I've worked with, including and
- 23:40Speaker 1: also I put myself in this group, but most of
- 23:42Speaker 1: us have, especially athletes, have an interesting, let's say, an
- 23:49Speaker 1: interesting relationship with their body, you know, when they are athletes,
- 23:53Speaker 1: because you're under a certain amount of pressure to keep
- 23:56Speaker 1: your body in a particular state. You know, I'm not
- 23:59Speaker 1: talking about aesthetics or weight. I'm talking about performance and
- 24:03Speaker 1: function and optimal output whatever the sport is, you know.
- 24:08Speaker 1: And now that I mean, obviously you're a long time
- 24:12Speaker 1: out of that, but I just want to know because
- 24:16Speaker 1: you know you you are six', two AND i know
- 24:18Speaker 1: that for, you like staying in elite shape for elite
- 24:23Speaker 1: sport didn't always come easy to.
- 24:26Speaker 3: You not that you were overweight.
- 24:28Speaker 1: Per, se but it's not like you were some fucking
- 24:31Speaker 1: mesomorph who who just walked, out you, know and you
- 24:35Speaker 1: were just lean and, jacked, Right you're always working hard
- 24:38Speaker 1: with diet, hard with training, hard with all the, protocols
- 24:42Speaker 1: and now it seems like. IT i don't, know but to,
- 24:46Speaker 1: me it seems like from the outside looking, in which
- 24:48Speaker 1: very MUCH i, am now you seem almost, physically mentally
- 24:53Speaker 1: and emotionally in a better. Place like how is your
- 24:56Speaker 1: relationship with your body changed since those?
- 25:00Speaker 3: Days?
- 25:01Speaker 4: Yeah, LIKE i, mean you've nailed, it.
- 25:03Speaker 5: Definitely that's exactly HOW i was as an, athlete and
- 25:07Speaker 5: LIKE i was JUST i look back now AND i,
- 25:09Speaker 5: overtrained and BECAUSE i was constantly trying to push myself
- 25:14Speaker 5: to jump higher and to be stronger and all the
- 25:17Speaker 5: things that you're meant to, be and my body was
- 25:20Speaker 5: just never naturally gifted like that. Unfortunately and so, YEAH
- 25:25Speaker 5: i WOULD i was that focused THAT, i you, know
- 25:27Speaker 5: would do so much THAT i THINK i was constantly you,
- 25:30Speaker 5: know had high levels of probably cortisol and stress running
- 25:33Speaker 5: through my body THAT i could never get the best
- 25:35Speaker 5: out of it. Anyway and then now WHEN i like
- 25:40Speaker 5: kind of flip now to WHERE i, AM i still
- 25:43Speaker 5: very much enjoy training and going to the, gym but
- 25:46Speaker 5: it's very much about never flogging myself or doing anything
- 25:50Speaker 5: that's overly high. Intense it's more about just being healthy
- 25:54Speaker 5: and like, MENTALLY i enjoy going to the gym because
- 25:57Speaker 5: it's a good outlet and doing things like, pilates and you,
- 26:02Speaker 5: KNOW i still go and see our Mate Sam whaley
- 26:04Speaker 5: and do a bit of rehab just on the jobs
- 26:07Speaker 5: to try and keep myself.
- 26:08Speaker 4: Strong but, yeah it really is.
- 26:12Speaker 5: A complete change that it's just all about being being
- 26:15Speaker 5: healthy and looking after, myself not ABOUT i don't care
- 26:17Speaker 5: how FIT i. AM i DON'T i can't run anyway
- 26:19Speaker 5: because my. Knee but, yeah it's not about that, anymore
- 26:23Speaker 5: even to the point where we've. COME i say it's wellness,
- 26:26Speaker 5: flogs but it's probably not the right wellness.
- 26:30Speaker 3: Flogs.
- 26:31Speaker 5: Yeah like we've got an infrared sauna at, home and you,
- 26:35Speaker 5: KNOW i love that BECAUSE i love the benefits health,
- 26:37Speaker 5: wise BUT i also love that it's just time, Out
- 26:40Speaker 5: SO i enjoy doing that WHEN i. Can And mark
- 26:43Speaker 5: has an ice bar setup and he uses. THAT i
- 26:45Speaker 5: don't go in there as, much BUT i KNOW i probably.
- 26:47Speaker 3: SHOULD i know how much you love ice. Bars HISTORICALLY i.
- 26:53Speaker 5: Do we've done enough in my, time but, YEAH i
- 26:56Speaker 5: understand the benefits of, it so Sometimes i'll do that.
- 26:58Speaker 4: Too we're in the, sauna.
- 26:59Speaker 5: But doing things like that more for our lifestyle and
- 27:03Speaker 5: being healthy than it is about going to training and you,
- 27:06Speaker 5: know doing your forty five AND i know there's a
- 27:09Speaker 5: place for, that but definitely for my, body it made
- 27:12Speaker 5: it so much worse from pushing it so.
- 27:15Speaker 1: Much do you have do you have a like an
- 27:19Speaker 1: overarching idea OF i guess or objective of what you
- 27:25Speaker 1: know what life at fifty will look, like or do
- 27:28Speaker 1: you just kind of LIKE i know that you're living more.
- 27:30Speaker 1: Consciously AND i, MEAN i know you're a long way from.
- 27:33Speaker 1: Fifty but WHAT i mean, is you KNOW i say this,
- 27:36Speaker 1: often but the amount of Times i've sat down with
- 27:39Speaker 1: somebody who's fifty is years old who says to, me,
- 27:42Speaker 1: oh like in reference to where their life's at and
- 27:46Speaker 1: there everything's, at you, know they, go this wasn't my.
- 27:48Speaker 1: Plan and then WHEN i, say CAN i see the?
- 27:51Speaker 1: Plan there is no?
- 27:53Speaker 3: Plan you?
- 27:54Speaker 1: Know do you live kind of methodically like that where
- 27:59Speaker 1: you think in, one, two five, Years not in terms
- 28:03Speaker 1: of so you've got this these KPIs mapped out on
- 28:06Speaker 1: some whiteboard that you And mark are reviewing on a quarterly,
- 28:09Speaker 1: basis but where you think, hopefully you, know in ten
- 28:13Speaker 1: years we're going to be living down the peninsula and
- 28:16Speaker 1: do it or?
- 28:16Speaker 3: Whatever do you think forward that?
- 28:18Speaker 5: FAR i mean not really other than LIKE i guess
- 28:24Speaker 5: you have to with a child because you've got to
- 28:27Speaker 5: think about schools and stuff like. That but in terms
- 28:30Speaker 5: of me, PERSONALLY i, LIKE i just want to as
- 28:34Speaker 5: much AS i can be doing what we're. Doing like,
- 28:36Speaker 5: me the work THAT i, DO i love it whichever
- 28:39Speaker 5: way it goes and, flows Like i'm happy with that
- 28:42Speaker 5: as long As i'm still making the right choices like
- 28:44Speaker 5: that are actually right for, me AND i will ALWAYS
- 28:48Speaker 5: i will always look after my health and my body
- 28:51Speaker 5: BECAUSE i know how important that is for me. Too
- 28:54Speaker 5: so in terms of plans, like of COURSE i, love you,
- 28:57Speaker 5: know renovating and. Buying HOW i would love to do
- 29:00Speaker 5: more of that IF i, could but comes with the
- 29:03Speaker 5: money that you need as.
- 29:04Speaker 3: Well but, yeah.
- 29:06Speaker 1: Of, course of course we should mention to our listeners
- 29:09Speaker 1: who don't, know which is probably half of, them that
- 29:11Speaker 1: you and it was A karla were on the. Block
- 29:16Speaker 1: how was that twenty eighteen or.
- 29:17Speaker 4: Something, yes that's exactly, right.
- 29:20Speaker 1: And did did very well of, Course so you still
- 29:23Speaker 1: have that renovation kind of.
- 29:28Speaker 4: Passion, YEAH i REALLY i enjoy.
- 29:31Speaker 5: It and my dad's a, builder so that was always
- 29:33Speaker 5: kind of you, know in front of me as a,
- 29:36Speaker 5: kid and, YEAH i love doing. It but obviously you
- 29:38Speaker 5: know you need time to do that as, well so
- 29:40Speaker 5: it always takes, time But i'm always tinking. Around that's
- 29:43Speaker 5: what we had to do with infrared sauna was build
- 29:46Speaker 5: an outdoor area to be able to house the sauna,
- 29:48Speaker 5: outside and So dad AND i did that last, summer and,
- 29:53Speaker 5: YEAH i really enjoy. It it's obviously it's, physical SO
- 29:56Speaker 5: i enjoy that part of it, Too but just being
- 29:59Speaker 5: creative and learning things That i've got no idea about and,
- 30:02Speaker 5: Thinking i've, got you, know all the tools THAT i,
- 30:04Speaker 5: need BUT i don't really know how to use.
- 30:06Speaker 4: Them So i'm going to rely on everybody else to
- 30:08Speaker 4: help me with that. Part BUT i like. IT i
- 30:12Speaker 4: like in my hands. Dirty.
- 30:13Speaker 1: Yeah, WELL i think obviously renovation and building and like
- 30:18Speaker 1: it is really a creative, process you, know and if
- 30:21Speaker 1: you can conceive, it then you can find the people
- 30:23Speaker 1: that can help you turn that theoretical something into.
- 30:27Speaker 3: A real world.
- 30:27Speaker 1: SOMETHING i want to ask you a couple of philosophical. Questions,
- 30:32Speaker 1: so what is something that you are better at now
- 30:37Speaker 1: than you used to be that that was perhaps a
- 30:39Speaker 1: flaw or a weakness that now you feel like you're
- 30:43Speaker 1: starting to master or at, least have you, know got
- 30:47Speaker 1: a better understanding of?
- 30:50Speaker 4: Cheapers what would it? BE i?
- 30:55Speaker 1: Think or in other, words what do you do better?
- 30:59Speaker 1: Now what's something now that you used to be kind
- 31:01Speaker 1: of shit? At and now maybe you're not a, superstar
- 31:05Speaker 1: but you definitely have learned and grown in that.
- 31:07Speaker 5: Space, oh you, know so much of what we've already
- 31:10Speaker 5: spoken about, today, definitely but knowing myself being far more
- 31:14Speaker 5: self aware and understanding of me and WHAT i, need
- 31:20Speaker 5: AND i think maybe comes with, age but also you,
- 31:23Speaker 5: know just evolving and always. Learning Like i'm a big
- 31:26Speaker 5: one for always listening to podcasts and you, know audio
- 31:30Speaker 5: books and really trying to learn as much AS i
- 31:33Speaker 5: can in terms of everything that you, know you talk.
- 31:37Speaker 5: About BUT i also FIND i get fatigued from that,
- 31:40Speaker 5: too and that SOMETIMES i just have to completely switch
- 31:42Speaker 5: off from it because you hear the same words all the,
- 31:45Speaker 5: time and you hear a lot of the same, topics
- 31:48Speaker 5: and it can get really overwhelming and, exhausting and SO
- 31:51Speaker 5: i have to be really conscious of pulling myself out
- 31:53Speaker 5: of that and not getting too caught up in that.
- 31:55Speaker 5: Too so, YEAH i think probably being just far more
- 31:58Speaker 5: self aware is a huge. One and being even me
- 32:03Speaker 5: like as you would, know LIKE i was never a
- 32:05Speaker 5: really emotional, person AND i certainly do am far more
- 32:10Speaker 5: emotional now THAN i ever, was and probably still not
- 32:13Speaker 5: too you, know an extreme, degree BUT i JUST i
- 32:18Speaker 5: see the value in that as, well about showing your
- 32:20Speaker 5: emotions to people, too and you, know letting your guard
- 32:23Speaker 5: down a little bit BECAUSE i was very much fixated
- 32:25Speaker 5: on one, thing and you, KNOW i was never really
- 32:28Speaker 5: very open like that was That, CRAIGO i.
- 32:31Speaker 3: Don't know what you're talking.
- 32:32Speaker 1: ABOUT i reckon you were always, emotional but you didn't
- 32:35Speaker 1: express it as express, it.
- 32:37Speaker 3: You, know like you it was always. There, yeah and
- 32:41Speaker 3: why well you.
- 32:42Speaker 1: AND i have been friends for probably the best part
- 32:44Speaker 1: of twenty, years, right and we don't see each other.
- 32:47Speaker 1: Much but if you rang me and When i'm FUCKED
- 32:49Speaker 1: i need, whatever you know THAT i would do.
- 32:51Speaker 3: That AND i KNOW i know the other way, around you,
- 32:54Speaker 3: Know SO.
- 32:56Speaker 1: I think, That, YEAH i think that as you you,
- 32:59Speaker 1: know for, me it feels like you. Are and the
- 33:02Speaker 1: same With. Tiff tiff showbian rock that's from The, himalayas
- 33:12Speaker 1: that keeps. It she's always got it on. Her but
- 33:16Speaker 1: it's funny because you both have, that LIKE i, said
- 33:18Speaker 1: that little bit of fuck off about. You but ALSO
- 33:21Speaker 1: i think part of that for both of you is
- 33:23Speaker 1: because you are you do actually care a, lot but
- 33:27Speaker 1: you don't always or you haven't always known how to express.
