Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: On Withdrawing From the Marathon & Acceptance
Transcript
- 0:17Speaker 1: Hey everyone, emilya body here for another installment of five
- 0:21Speaker 1: Minute Friday from Hurdle. This week it will be five
- 0:24Speaker 1: minute Friday. It will not be twenty minute Friday. It
- 0:27Speaker 1: is so crazy, like how much can happen within a week? Right,
- 0:32Speaker 1: So to catch you up to speed. Last Friday for
- 0:35Speaker 1: the episode, I came out and talked to you all
- 0:39Speaker 1: about navigating a little bit of injury. And a week later,
- 0:44Speaker 1: a lot has changed some of it, most of it,
- 0:47Speaker 1: I would say for the better, although not all of
- 0:50Speaker 1: these decisions were easy. So I withdrew my entry from
- 0:55Speaker 1: the London Marathon. I got that entry through New Balance
- 0:59Speaker 1: and one of my biggest fears in withdrawing this jury
- 1:03Speaker 1: is that the London Marathon is notoriously really difficult to
- 1:05Speaker 1: get into. I was really sad thinking about the fact
- 1:09Speaker 1: that this injury may have cost me, like my one
- 1:13Speaker 1: shot at running this race. The good news I talked
- 1:17Speaker 1: to my friends at New Balance. It seems as though
- 1:20Speaker 1: I will be able to run again run it period
- 1:23Speaker 1: next year, so at least there's that. But I withdrew
- 1:25Speaker 1: my entry and about an hour later I was on
- 1:29Speaker 1: the phone with Lisa from Delta looking into flights to moan,
- 1:35Speaker 1: and I cried with Lisa from Delta bless her and
- 1:41Speaker 1: had to cough up a little bit more money, but
- 1:44Speaker 1: was able to tack on a little bit of Italy
- 1:47Speaker 1: to my now upcoming euro trips. So I'm heading to
- 1:51Speaker 1: Italy next week midweek. I will be there until the
- 1:55Speaker 1: following Tuesday. Then I hop from Italy to Paris, and
- 1:59Speaker 1: then I hop from Paris to Chicago, where on Saturday morning,
- 2:04Speaker 1: quick Plug, I'll be hosting a live hurdle with my
- 2:07Speaker 1: friends at Tracksmith at the Chicago Athletic Association at nine am.
- 2:11Speaker 1: So I will I'll put a link in the show
- 2:14Speaker 1: notes for you to learn more information on that. If
- 2:17Speaker 1: you happen to either be frending Chicago or just in
- 2:20Speaker 1: the area and want to come, say what up? I
- 2:21Speaker 1: would love, love, love blah love to meet you irl.
- 2:26Speaker 1: But anyway, So that's the first development, right, complete shift
- 2:29Speaker 1: in my plans. London is officially called off. As I
- 2:33Speaker 1: was saying in last week's episode, I'll bite emotionally, I
- 2:38Speaker 1: felt very sure of myself and my gut in following
- 2:44Speaker 1: my gut and making this decision, and despite making progress
- 2:50Speaker 1: with my body, and I'll talk about that in just
- 2:51Speaker 1: a second. I still feel that way. Italy is a
- 2:56Speaker 1: very special place for me. I've talked about on the
- 2:58Speaker 1: show before, but a few years back I went on
- 3:01Speaker 1: my first solo trip there for ten days, mostly to Florence.
- 3:05Speaker 1: And being able to book that trip again right now
- 3:08Speaker 1: feels very.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Special and I'm really looking forward to it.
- 3:12Speaker 1: So with that said, if you have any Milan must
- 3:15Speaker 1: try dinner recks, I'll be there for one night and
- 3:18Speaker 1: I'm pretty well versed in Florence, but definitely also taking
- 3:22Speaker 1: Paris recommendations as well. Now update on my body. So
- 3:28Speaker 1: I started this journey crying at physical therapy about a
- 3:32Speaker 1: week after the pain started to kick in and didn't
- 3:34Speaker 1: go away and running hurt. And that day at physical therapy,
- 3:40Speaker 1: my PT gave me a bunch of exercises that I
- 3:43Speaker 1: should start doing two to three times a day. I
- 3:46Speaker 1: have been doing those exercises two to three times a day,
- 3:49Speaker 1: and as of Tuesday, when I went back to PT,
- 3:52Speaker 1: the great news is that the strength is really starting
- 3:55Speaker 1: to kick in and a lot of these exercises which
- 3:57Speaker 1: felt truly difficult before, are getting easier. Running in general
- 4:02Speaker 1: no longer really hurts now, it just feels like I
- 4:05Speaker 1: have like a really tight muscle in my lower abdomen
- 4:08Speaker 1: so as hip region, but it doesn't hurt.
- 4:11Speaker 2: Still.
- 4:12Speaker 1: The benchmarker we're at is keeping things low intensity, no
- 4:17Speaker 1: more than like a two or three out of a ten.
- 4:21Speaker 1: I'm not running for more than about thirty minutes at
- 4:23Speaker 1: a time right now, and just working on healing and
- 4:29Speaker 1: giving my body the time it needs to be better.
- 4:32Speaker 1: I do want to tell you about that first run
- 4:34Speaker 1: back because I had this really beautiful moment of appreciation
- 4:38Speaker 1: and could draw a comparison about what so many of
- 4:41Speaker 1: us have been navigating this past year. I was running,
- 4:44Speaker 1: and I was, you know, walk running and then jogging,
- 4:47Speaker 1: and I wasn't doing much. But in that moment, the
- 4:50Speaker 1: opportunity to move in this way, having not moved in
- 4:54Speaker 1: that way for a couple of weeks, felt truly rewarding
- 4:58Speaker 1: and just so exciting. I was so grateful for it,
- 5:02Speaker 1: and it reminded me of the pandemic right in that
- 5:06Speaker 1: the pandemic came and as soon as we were allowed,
- 5:10Speaker 1: especially in New York, to meet up with friends and
- 5:13Speaker 1: go out to eat, it didn't matter that it was
- 5:16Speaker 1: twelve degrees out and freezing and I had to wear
- 5:19Speaker 1: like six different jackets. Right, I was so excited to
- 5:24Speaker 1: freeze my ass off to spend time with other humans
- 5:28Speaker 1: after not being able to do that irl for so
- 5:31Speaker 1: long because of the parameters of what was going on
- 5:36Speaker 1: in our world. And I laughed to myself as I
- 5:40Speaker 1: was grabbing my iced coffee when I was done with
- 5:42Speaker 1: this run, because it's so true, right, like these unexpected
- 5:46Speaker 1: hurdles that happened in our lives, they often give us
- 5:51Speaker 1: a second to take a step back and find those
- 5:55Speaker 1: simple joys, to focus again on the appreciation and we
- 6:00Speaker 1: have for the little things.
- 6:02Speaker 2: And I feel.
- 6:04Speaker 1: So grateful for my body, despite of course being a
- 6:08Speaker 1: little frustrated at the circumstance, knowing that I, because of
- 6:13Speaker 1: the choices that I have made, will be able to
- 6:16Speaker 1: get back in the saddle and with time it will
- 6:21Speaker 1: be there for me. My prompt for you this week
- 6:26Speaker 1: what is something in your life that you really appreciate
- 6:31Speaker 1: right now? Again, what is something in your life that
- 6:34Speaker 1: you really appreciate right now? And now for a listener question.
- 6:40Speaker 3: Hey, Emily, this is Becky from Vain. I've been a
- 6:43Speaker 3: longtime hurdler and I just wanted to let you know
- 6:45Speaker 3: how incredibly inspiring you are to me and the rest
- 6:48Speaker 3: of the Hurle community. It doesn't go on notice the
- 6:51Speaker 3: energy that it takes for you to do all of
- 6:54Speaker 3: the things that you do for us, whether it's content
- 6:57Speaker 3: to the podcast, your Instagram is. It's just so inspiring
- 7:01Speaker 3: and we are so very grateful for you. I do
- 7:04Speaker 3: have a question. I'm traveling to my first half marathon
- 7:07Speaker 3: in January. I'm traveling from Maine to Florida. I'll be
- 7:10Speaker 3: flying flying in the day before. What are your tips
- 7:14Speaker 3: and tricks for nutrition and hydration and all of the
- 7:19Speaker 3: things that we do to prepare for a big race
- 7:22Speaker 3: or a big long run. I take the preparation before
- 7:26Speaker 3: every long run very seriously, and this is the thing
- 7:28Speaker 3: I'm most nervous about. So anything you got for me,
- 7:32Speaker 3: I'll take it. Thank you so much.
- 7:35Speaker 2: Oh, this is a good one.
- 7:36Speaker 1: So I have traveled a few times to run different
- 7:40Speaker 1: races from seaweeds with Lululemon. I ran the Dublin Marathon.
- 7:45Speaker 1: I was planning to travel to run the London Marathon, obviously.
- 7:48Speaker 2: Boston, etc.
- 7:50Speaker 1: And in doing this, I travel with some of the
- 7:54Speaker 1: things that I know that I'm going to want to consume.
- 7:57Speaker 2: But I also plan ahead.
- 7:58Speaker 1: So, for instance, pre race nutrition, it starts the week before,
- 8:03Speaker 1: making sure that you are really eating whole foods, you're
- 8:05Speaker 1: staying very hydrated, you have enough adequate electrolyte intake, but
- 8:10Speaker 1: also thinking about that night before. Right, so I months
- 8:15Speaker 1: in advance, start to do some recon to plan and
- 8:19Speaker 1: figure out exactly where I want to be eating dinner.
- 8:21Speaker 1: I look at the menu. I'm a big like pasta
- 8:24Speaker 1: with a protein person. Make sure it has good reviews
- 8:27Speaker 1: and snager reservation. So that's step one. Step two is
- 8:30Speaker 1: thinking about what you want to eat in the morning
- 8:33Speaker 1: before you race. Now, a nutritionist will conventionally tell you
- 8:37Speaker 1: that that pre race meal should be happening at least
- 8:39Speaker 1: ninety minutes to two hours before you run. My go
- 8:44Speaker 1: to pre race, especially for a marathon, is a full
- 8:46Speaker 1: peanut butter and jelly sandwich, even better if it's toasted.
- 8:50Speaker 1: So I will travel with the I think SI Jiffy
- 8:54Speaker 1: crunchy peanut butter packs and jelly packets, and I'll buy
- 8:58Speaker 1: these at like Target, and I'll even sometimes travel with
- 9:02Speaker 1: the bread, or I'll make sure that I can buy
- 9:04Speaker 1: the bread wherever that I'm going. But I want to
- 9:07Speaker 1: make sure that I have these things at my disposal.
- 9:09Speaker 1: Also having on hand at a hotel room like water
- 9:13Speaker 1: and again those electrolytes really important to make sure that
- 9:16Speaker 1: you have everything that you could want at your disposal. Also,
- 9:20Speaker 1: of course, I mean I'm a big like go out
- 9:22Speaker 1: after the race, celebrate, drink a bunch of beers, eat
- 9:25Speaker 1: a burger kind of person. But if there is something
- 9:27Speaker 1: that you lean into every single time when you are
- 9:29Speaker 1: done with this kind of effort, bring that along with
- 9:32Speaker 1: you too. There is no harm in it. So nutrition wise,
- 9:36Speaker 1: prep smart, think about where you're going to eat before,
- 9:38Speaker 1: what you want to eat the morning of, and also
- 9:42Speaker 1: don't forget to think about your recovery. Right. So, like
- 9:45Speaker 1: I said, food's an important piece of that puzzle. But
- 9:48Speaker 1: if you can travel with your hyper rice or your
- 9:50Speaker 1: theragun or whatever you may use typically after your run
- 9:53Speaker 1: to give your muscles a little bit of love. I
- 9:57Speaker 1: got a question in my DMS yesterday which was can
- 9:59Speaker 1: I travel with my hyper volet The answer is yes,
- 10:02Speaker 1: I have one hundred and ten percent brought these through
- 10:04Speaker 1: security before. Make sure you're signed up for hurdles SMS
- 10:09Speaker 1: text by texting the word welcome to seven three to
- 10:13Speaker 1: Hurdler to stay in the loop with all the things
- 10:15Speaker 1: you love from the show, including motivation, exclusive deals, and
- 10:18Speaker 1: so much more. And if you want information on the
- 10:22Speaker 1: hurdle membership, we would love to have you. Programming kicks
- 10:25Speaker 1: off October first, text the word membership to seven three
- 10:30Speaker 1: two Hurdler. One last thing, I do want to say
- 10:34Speaker 1: this and echo it again. I'm so grateful for the
- 10:36Speaker 1: feedback after last week's twenty minute Friday. I know firsthand,
- 10:43Speaker 1: as it is very apparent that many of you do,
- 10:45Speaker 1: how difficult navigating injury can be as well as.
- 10:49Speaker 2: You know navigating identity.
- 10:51Speaker 1: And I want you to know and here that I
- 10:54Speaker 1: see you, I hear you, and we don't have to
- 10:57Speaker 1: go through these hurdles alone.
- 10:58Speaker 2: Another hurdle conquered. Catch you guys next time.
